Welcome to issue 68.

There are local issues which we must rely on our elected politicians to address. One of these is our health service. As a prosperous nation we deserve to have some of the best health care systems in the world - nothing less. But in Queensland we don’t.

Locally at least, it seems we have one of the worst. We are learning that far more lives have been ruined from alleged botched surgery and other tragedies than we would ever have imagined after listening to our State Government’s repeated claims that all is well in that department.

So, in this issue we are devoting much of our editorial and contributed content to an examination of Queensland Health’s oversight and administration of hospitals in this region, following the horrendous revelations and outcry from locals at a public health crisis forum in Caboolture earlier this month. The LOCAL News was present at this meeting and after hearing first-hand from victims of shocking treatment at Caboolture Hospital, I just can’t comprehend why and how so many very justified complaints regarding surgery blunders were dealt with so poorly by hospital administrators. It seems clear precise communication and accountability from health authorities to their patients was not forthcoming.

Also in this issue, as our readers would expect, regular contributors Cranky Lizard, Matt Owen and Harvey Fewings have a few choice words to say on the health situation, while Mozza’s been out and about and around again, digging up some great local stories including the reaction of some beach-loving locals to the new police patrol buggy.

And there’s some exciting news for those who have fond memories of Brisbane’s long-gone, much-missed Cloudland Ballroom, with a double pass to an amazing new musical on offer!

Bribie was promised a Hospital – not a Clinic The staff at the Community Centre in Verdoni Street are nothing short of amazing. Thanks to our federal MP, Terry Young, we Bribie locals can now get all our Centrelink and Medicare issues sorted out here on the Island. I must admit I’m not genned up on all this modern technology.

In contrast, I can’t fail to comment on Ali King’s questionnaire that arrived in our mailbox a few weeks ago. I have to stress to our local state member that what we want on Bribie is what she and Labor promised us at the election: a HOSPITAL, not some glorified health clinic.

by Ali King we would NEVER need to go to Caboolture again for treatment.

Peter, a young man who lived opposite the crash site came across several times to offer cold drinks and chairs. Several drivers who passed by stopped to check that all was well.

They were warm, caring people, all concerned and wanting to help. Best of all, my friends, Barbara and Colin, stayed with me for hours until the tow-truck arrived. Their support was wonderful, as was my husband, Bruce.

All in all, my faith in human nature was strengthened. What fantastic people we have on Bribie! Thank you!

Covid Fear-mongering The chances of dying with Covid or from Covid in Queensland over the last 20 months are 7 in 5,195,000, or 1 in 742,000. That’s a lot lower than the annual ‘flu or road death risk.

It should be easy enough to conclude that the government is deliberately locking up millions of people and spreading fear in the population as it destroys the economy and the lives of millions of people because of some other reason (or agenda) which is not related to the risk of people dying.

If such fear-mongering were perpetrated by a foreign government, it would be called state-sponsored terrorism. If the incarceration and denial of our basic freedoms and human rights were also perpetrated by a foreign government we would consider it a declaration of war against the Australian people.

So what do we call all that in the case of our own governments?

Faith in Human Nature You would think that having a large, heavily-loaded 4WD crash into the back of your car while you were stationary would be upsetting. Even more so when the RACQ assessor says your car is a write-off. However, the afternoon of August 30th turned out to be very uplifting.

I was waiting in Welsby Pde to turn left onto the bridge from Bribie. A big truck was coming along Benabrow Ave, so I waited. Suddenly there was a loud thump. I turned to my passenger and asked if she was OK. She was. So was I. Amazing!

The driver of the 4WD that crashed into us was an honest tradie who admitted the crash was his fault and who gave me all the necessary details for insurance. He was distraught about what had happened. He needed a hug, so I gave him one.

Queensland has sold its soul I know I’m swimming against the tide of public opinion here, but I honestly believe that Queensland has lost its moral compass. It has sold its soul!

What many Queenslanders, and obviously the mainstream media, don’t seem to understand - or worse, don’t care - is that hundreds of thousands of the “little people” are being hurt on a daily basis by cold-hearted bureaucratic decisions made by public service mouthpieces and supported by our political masters.

As I said, public opinion is probably not on my side here but, like the Queensland government, I don’t give a stuff.

Being popular shouldn’t be the ultimate aim.

Covid and the “Claytons” Hospital Please, I f I may, I would like to make two contributions.

Firstly - re Cranky Lizard’s rant concerning COVID and the conduct of the Victorian State Government. I clearly remember reading, back in the day, Prime Minister Scott Morrison offered Chairman Dan taxpayers’ money to combat the virus, or troops to act as security people - the money or the box.

Naturally Chairman Dan took the money to pass on to the security industry union, one of his chief supporters. And that was how it was reported. I know from personal experience security suppliers are notorious for "ghosting", that is, charging you for say, 20 guards, and supplying around 15.

Secondly, this Claytons hospital that our health minister has already stated will have no beds. You can safely assume it will have no operating theatre, no ICU and no wards. But it will have chairs. In the interim our new State member is conducting a survey to determine what the taxpayers of Bribie would like to see in our new Claytons hospital.

This is a stalling and time-consuming exercise to further delay what will eventually never happen. But if it ever does, it will be nothing more than a Monday to Friday first aid station, but not at night.

Eco-friend or Eco-foe?

What a journey, Colonel Dingo! their friend Dingo. In recognition of his comradeship the veterans some years ago presented their loyal mate with a dog tag bearing the inscription “1K9 Col. Dingo”.

Rod Devenish-Meares, President of The Bribie Island & District Sub Branch, Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia, fondly talks about Dingo and the wonderful memories of times they shared in the park while they were working. “There are about ten of us who work on the park gardens and edges, and Dingo was always there with us,” said Rod. The council rangers eventually accepted Dingo roaming in

Memorial Park to celebrate Dingo’s life.

There were tears and lovely stories told of Dings and how he touched each and everyone of us with his infectious smile every day. He was a well-loved dog, not only by his family but by anyone who was lucky enough to spend time with him.

Dingo loved people and other dogs and you couldn’t help but love him.

The veterans rely solely on fundraisers to keep the park looking the way it does and to keep it in the beautiful condition it is. There are many memorials held in this pristine parkland and every year on Anzac

Every second Thursday the veterans would start their whipper-snippers and lawnmowers and, without fail, Colonel Dingo, who lived across the road, would sneak out and hang with the Diggers in

the park with the vets, and no one could stop him going to the park every fortnight to join his pals at their BBQ. Dingo was sixteen-and-a-half and he passed away late last month.

On September 2 the locals who knew Dingo all came together at Vietnam Veterans

Day the park comes alive with over 100 locals attending the service.

Dingo now has a plaque at the memorial park in his honour, and Dingo’s mum, Vicki Cooper, and Samantha Gibson were there to thank the boys for looking after him so well every fortnight. Dingo’s brother, Bo Gibson, was unable to be there on the day.

However, he was there in the photos and in Spirit for his best friend, Dings.

Dingo, you will be missed by all.

In our modern society it seems everywhere you look there are the terms ‘eco-friendly’ or ‘sustainably produced’.

Although they may seem like shallow terms or business tactics, they actually reflect an intrinsic shift in the foundations of how we as society, perceive our environment. Perhaps one of the biggest movements to grace the 21st century was, and still is, environmentalism. In gaining a deeper understanding into how our actions impact our surroundings many businesses, companies and individuals have taken steps and actions towards ensuring a greener future. Whilst policy may not currently reflect the concerns held by us, the people, this movement is not going away. Which poses the question, how does this problem impact me, and perhaps a follow-up, what can I do to help?

We are so lucky to live here on beautiful Bribie Island. We have a plethora of wildlife, fauna and flora and beaches that are envied. However, these natural wonders are comprised of delicate and fragile ecosystems that all work in tangent, keeping the balance. Through our actions as humans, both consciously and unconsciously, we threaten the balance of these ecosystems. Plastic, pollutants and people are the three major threats to species and eco-spaces around Bribie.

Think about an average day in your life.

What do you eat? Is it wrapped in plastic?

Do you take a reusable water bottle when you leave the house, or do you buy one when you are out? How many food scraps do you throw away? These questions may seem inconsequential; however, if answered honestly, they provide insight into how we live and therefore how we impact the environment. For example, many of the used plastic bottles and containers end up in the passage, causing harm to the sea-life. And climbing on restricted sand dunes disrupts the composition of beach based eco-spaces. But many of the changes that we as individuals can make are simple and able to be incorporated into everyday life. Instead of throwing away your cans and plastic bottles, collect them and take them to the local recycling depot for ten cents a bottle. Food scraps can be collected and used to compost or for the garden. Even focusing on taking a water bottle each day means less plastic is being thrown away. These actions are all ways to contribute to ensuring that our community and environments remain healthy and thriving.

If you look around, you can see that we have already made steps towards protecting the environment and our animals on the island. The recent animal crossing in Woorim is a perfect example and even Queensland as a state is working towards a more environmentally focused future.

More recently, our state took the step of banning single-use plastics, a brilliant step in the right direction towards preserving our environment. Living on Bribie and being surrounded by such wonderful wildlife we have a huge incentive to protect and save it. From individuals to business, taking these eco-friendly steps highlights the importance of nature. If you wish to get more involved with the protection of the environment emails can also be sent to local parliamentary representatives. Even raising this discussion with friends and family increases awareness and action. It is up to us to action, create change and inspire others.

Therefore, I leave you with this thought: Let’s strive to be eco-friendly not environmental foe.

FAB Confirmed as Annual Event and Artists Co-op Planned

FAB – Fabulous Art Beachmere – is usually held over the Ekka long weekend but this year due to Covid lockdowns and restrictions it was postponed, and then extended to allow the gathering of artists and friends for the Gala Awards Night.

The extended opening over three weekends ended successfully, with the winners announced at the Gala Entertainment on The Deck on the afternoon of Saturday 28 August and a well-attended Artist Meet & Greet the next day, when artists and the new owners of work purchased, had the opportunity to meet, learn about the works changing hands and even organise commissions for future work.

FAB organisers said although the additional weeks did create a lot more work, the event was a great success.

“We owe a big thanks to all our volunteers and all the wonderful people who visited the gallery over the big three weekends,” Di Newell, BANG Secretary said.

“We have had so much support that we will definitely be running FAB as an annual event now.”

Just as exciting for local artists is the decision to hold a community meeting in October to gauge the interest in starting a Beachmere Artists Co-op.

Bribie Rocks Ladybug Day! Members of the Bribie Rocks group, whose sole aim is to give enjoyment to others by painting and hiding rocks, celebrated Ladybug Day in style on Sunday, August 29.

The group, which communicates via Facebook, placed their colourful bugs nose to tail along the seawall on the Bongaree foreshore at Brennan Park. When all were in place, the line measured an amazing 46.71 metres! While this was just short of last year’s 49 metres, members have vowed to keep painting to try to go beyond that next year.

The artists come in all ages, from the children of the Sparrow Early Learning Centre at Sandstone Point, to highly-experienced and very creative artists. They also come from a variety of areas, including a couple of ladies, complete with ladybug wings, who had “flown” up from Loganholme for the event.

After the measuring took place, artists and members of the public took the bugs to hide for others to find. It will be interesting to see how far they travel! If you find any of them in your travels, be sure to post a picture on the Facebook page for the artist to see.

Bribie Lodge: Numbers Down But Spirits High

Inquiry addresses GP shortage, access to health services Following intense lobbying by federal MPs, a Senate inquiry will now examine the delivery of health services to outer metropolitan, rural, and regional Australians, with particular regard to localised shortages of general practitioners.

The Senate Community Affairs References Committee will conduct the inquiry and is seeking input from people who live in communities where there is poor access to GP services.

Like many other community and service clubs, not only in this region but Australia wide, Bribie Masonic Lodge has suffered a downturn in numbers in recent times.

But Master of the Lodge, Greg Hemphill, says while there’s life there’s hope, and though numbers are down due to members passing, or leaving the district, he is hopeful that Masons who have recently retired and moved to the area will come and visit the Lodge. And there’s plenty of hope in the ranks of the Bribie Lodge members that some will not only visit but affiliate with Bribie.

Mr Hemphill says he would like to see the lodge’s charitable work continue and increase with newer members joining, and to this end has offered anyone who would like to become a Freemason all the necessary information to do that.

Bribie Lodge meets on the second Wednesday of every month in the Blue Building on Banya Street, Bongaree, diagonally opposite the Toc H. Centre.

Member for Longman, Terry Young, who since his election two years ago has been a strong advocate for an inquiry, said he had been speaking to government ministers about issues some Longman residents are having getting access to a GP and that there were currently several clinics on Bribie Island that were at capacity and needed more GPs. “Yet there are also at least six recently-appointed GPs servicing the area and there are four separate clinics which are taking on new patients,” Mr Young said.

“These are Bribie Island Medical Centre, Bribie Doctors, Goodwin Drive Medical Centre and Bribie Doctors Banksia Beach.

“To write a musical about an inanimate object such as a building required some thinking outside the box,” Paul Hayman, writer, director and producer of Cloudland the Musical explains.

Exposed: Caboolture Hospital’s “Living Hell” Special Report by Belinda Ferguson & Michael Thomas Shocking first-hand stories – and evidence – of alleged malpractice, negligence, refusal to answer pleas for information, botched operations and unnecessary or inappropriate procedures at Caboolture Hospital over the past few years were heard from patients and relatives at a Town Hall-style public forum in Caboolture on September 9.

Participants in the well-attended meeting didn’t hold back, despite often being in distress as they recounted the painful and often life-changing experiences they had endured – and in some cases will continue to suffer from. None of us present could fail to have been disturbed, and touched, by the opening disclosure from a mother whose life, in her own words, has been ruined by her treatment at Caboolture Hospital. She has so far undergone 11 further abdominal operations since a botched Caesarean there three years ago left her disfigured, in constant pain and facing more major surgery and an uncertain future.

Then there was the mother whose 48-yearold son had Down Syndrome and was admitted after a seizure. He returned home with broken bones, suffering PTSD and terrible nightmares. “He was so frightened, we had to turn the lights on,” she said.

“Then he told us this person hit him in the head and stomach.” The hospital offered no explanation. Her son died six months later.

Several attendees who said they had “Just come to listen” were inspired to stand up and reveal their own personal experiences.

We heard stories of a 90-year-old waiting hours for an ambulance after a fall, a Category 1 patient waiting 6 months for colonoscopy, and a pre-admittance patient being left alone in a waiting room for two hours.

Frustration with the hospital management’s point-blank refusal to listen to patients’ and relatives’ complaints or answer requests for further information was clearly in evidence, as was the courage it took to expose these deeply personal matters in public.

One issue on which the majority of those who spoke out agreed was that in most cases they had no complaints against the treatment and care given by frontline medical staff, nurses, orderlies and ambulance crews. It was evident that they were trying as hard as they could to do their jobs despite being under-staffed, under-resourced, overworked and burdened by the extra stresses caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Caboolture forum was part of a statewide Health Crisis tour also visiting Cairns, Rockhampton, Caloundra, Redcliffe, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, hosted

by LNP Opposition leader David Crisafulli and Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates.

Federal member for Longman Terry Young also addressed the meeting and talked with constituents afterwards.

At the conclusion of the meeting, before speaking individually with some of the patients, Mr Crisafulli thanked the courageous locals who had spoken up and shared their distressing stories in the hope of fixing the health crisis, saying, “The [just

announced] investigation into the horrific claims of alleged botched surgeries and abuse at Caboolture Hospital must be open and transparent. These honest people I met in Caboolture need answers.”

He promised the opposition would be vigorously pursuing the government for those answers – and demanding effective action be taken.

Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates, herself an experienced registered nurse and former hospital administrator, told The LOCAL News: “These brave locals are going through a living hell after their experiences at Caboolture Hospital.

“Of all the forums we have held across Queensland, the Caboolture event was by far the most distressing.”

Claims Not New It’s important to remember that claims of workplace cultural and administrative shortcomings at Caboolture have been simmering for many months. Even before these shock disclosures were made there had been a long and bitter parliamentary battle between the Health Minister and the Opposition on the administration of Queensland Health in general and Caboolture Hospital in particular. In days leading up to the Caboolture forum, Health Minister Yvette D’Ath had been forced to defend the hospital in parliament after staff whistle blowers went public with allegations including botched surgery and operations that resulted in deaths.

Asked if she could guarantee that all surgeries performed at the hospital were carried out by surgeons qualified to perform them, she replied that allegations about the hospital’s surgical services were first raised with her in mid-July, which prompted her to seek advice from the hospital and Metro North Hospital and Health Service. Following this intervention Ms D’Ath said, “I can advise that each of those allegations was thoroughly investigated by the Caboolture Hospital’s performance management committee.”

But after receiving an “unsatisfactory” response to her own urgent inquiries into claims that a doctor had performed an operation outside their expertise she admitted she no longer had full confidence the hospital had properly investigated “very serious allegations”.

Later, the minister attacked the Opposition for framing the Caboolture situation as a “crisis”, and said no evidence had yet been offered of any systemic flaws in the hospital system.

But David Crisafulli and Ros Bates continued to ask uncomfortable questions and finally, Metro North Health Board chair Jim McGowan announced an independent review of Caboolture Hospital surgical services, saying it was about “transparency and community confidence”, and that it would consider the allegations that have been made, identify the effectiveness of the processes already in place, and make recommendations for further improvements if needed.

Really Jim? If needed? Isn’t it obvious they are, and have been for a long time?

the results of the review be publicly released. “It is incredibly disappointing that it’s taken four days of sustained questioning and media reports for the government to act,” she said in a statement.

Solutions Offered The impact of worsening ambulance ramping (when a patient isn’t offloaded within the clinically-recommended time of 30 minutes) was also raised and addressed at length by David Crisafulli in Caboolture, and, coincidentally, a few days after the forum, the Auditor-General released a scathing report into Queensland’s emergency departments, appearing to vindicate and back the Opposition’s calls for critical improvements. With regard to set ramping targets the report states “this target has not been met at the statewide level in the past seven years.”

Furthermore, the report found “during the period from July 2020 to February 2021, only one of the top 26 reporting hospitals met the targets for both emergency length of stay and patient off-stretcher times.”

The Auditor-General’s report makes several recommendations, including real-time data sharing and giving more power to local hospital and health services. These are solutions already put forward by the Opposition, according to David Crisafulli.

“This is what we’ve been calling for to fix the worsening rate of ambulance ramping across the state,” he said.

“The LNP has repeatedly put solutions on the table – better triaging, more beds and the introduction of real-time data for emergency departments. It’s now up to the State Government to implement these vital measures and take real action to heal the Queensland Health crisis.”

Recommendations to give power back to frontline workers were also welcomed

by Ros Bates, citing her own nursing and hospital administration experience.

“I know how frustrating it is for frontline staff to work under immense pressure with a lack of resources,” she said.

“That’s why we have repeatedly called for the state government to make Patient Care the top priority, not hiding data.”

“This damning report clearly shows ambulance ramping has been a chronic problem in Queensland years before the pandemic.”

Desire For Change

When the LNP was last in government, in November 2014, ambulance ramping at Caboolture Hospital was at 24%. Because the present government is unable to supply real-time data, unbelievably relying on quarterly updates, the latest available figure is for June 2021, when it had blown out to 38%.

David Crisafulli said, “We’ve put solutions on the table for the State Government to adopt, including real-time data monitoring, and all Queenslanders should be able to get this data daily, not quarterly.

We need better resources for triaging and more funding on the frontline.”

On the issues facing Queensland Health and Caboolture Hospital in general, Mr Crisafulli told us, “What is clear, is a desire for change. Labor is losing control of the health system.”

While preparing this feature, The LOCAL News contacted Metro North Hospital and Health Service for comment and was told: “Caboolture Hospital has rigorous safety and quality protocols in place, with patient care its utmost priority.”

Forgive us if we, and those patients we met at Caboolture, find this somewhat hard to believe.

No Amount of ‘Spin’ Will Fix This Mess

It was always going to happen. With the Queensland State Government so focused on COVID and “keeping Queenslanders safe”, the cracks in other health-related areas have been brutally exposed. And the irony is that it’s where Queenslanders need help the most they are being let down.

We’re talking about public hospitals statewide, and in this instance Caboolture Hospital, where allegations of botched surgeries and a poor workplace culture have rocked not only the local community but have laid bare professional and administrative shortcomings within the Queensland Health Department to the entire nation.

Elsewhere in this issue you will read a disturbing litany of botched procedures, some of which will make you sick to the stomach, administrative failures, malpractice and lack of compassion and empathy.

This is unacceptable, in any country, in any generation. And it’s only because of the bravery of patients and staff whistleblowers that this shameful situation has finally been brought into the open.

Call the doctor – of spin So what’s going to be done about this?

After whistleblowing insiders finally managed to have their complaints made public an investigation was announced.

Eventually this will be routinely followed up with announcements of extra training, increased funding, some team-building exercises, new systems, perhaps an apology... and then the spin doctors will be put to work.

But not even the Premier’s team of 18 spin doctors (marketing, communications and social media staff) can put a positive twist on this one. Certainly not one that will fool the public for long. Sure, they (ghost writing for their masters) will talk about The Future, Lessons Learned and maybe, if things are bad enough, the Premier will throw someone under the bus. Make no mistake, the role of these 18 staff is to show the government in a positive light.

I wonder if it’s fair to ask whether the opposition leader has a matching 18-member marketing team? He probably doesn’t, and this could be the difference between winning and losing an election.

And don’t forget who is footing the government spin doctors’ wage bill of possibly $6m over the four-year term. Yes, you and I. Do you think it sounds right that we are paying the spin doctor bill for the government? Of course not. In fact, it is ridiculous and out of control. How did it even get to this? How does this return to some form of equilibrium? In professional sports there is a salary cap for coaches and support staff. Perhaps this type of model would be appropriate in politics?

I wonder, if there were an additional 18 frontline staff at Caboolture Hospital would the situation have been different?

Or an additional $6m in funding from the estimated salaries?

Money well spent?

The Caboolture Hospital is currently undergoing a $399m redevelopment that includes a $46m car park (I guess this is the end of free parking). But how does this address the botched surgeries and cultural issues? Best practice suggests that the current systems and culture should have

been addressed prior to committing a further $399m. Also, the question must be asked if this area requires a $46m car park is it really in the best location? So many interesting decisions have been made.

With the announcement around 12 months ago (in the week of the election) of the $25m satellite hospitals at Caboolture and Bribie Island, with planned subsequent delivery in 2023, it is uncertain what beneficial effect this will have on the main Caboolture Hospital. Given the population growth and the true nature of these satellite hospitals it may be minimal. It’s no secret (despite the spin doctor semantics) that the proposed satellite hospital scenario does not include overnight beds and an after-hours emergency facility.

This situation really makes you wonder how things got this bad. Overworked paramedics and medical staff, ambulances struggling to respond in time and then forced to ‘ramp’ at hospitals, people waiting for hours once they get to the hospital and now, worst of all, botched surgeries and alleged internal workplace issues.

The residents of Caboolture and the surrounding areas deserve better. Community members should not be coming out of hospital worse-off than when they went in. It is clear to see that lives have been ruined in this debacle. It gives an uneasy feeling when we see our well-paid public servants and elected representatives spruiking their “achievements” and posing

for photographs at a hospital media event, when in fact chances are that they will never themselves use a public hospital.

And never forget that as a community we pay taxes and fees to cover ambulance and hospital costs. Are we not paying enough?

Greater transparency should be on the agenda for future Queensland governments. It obviously isn’t with this one.

The Queensland state political system isn’t working as it should. The opposition has lost considerable ground and looks to be fighting back slowly, but no doubt invigorated by the public response to their prompt action in taking up the fight on behalf of those affected by the total incompetency and lack of remedial action shown by the present health administration.

A combination of COVID and a lack of Opposition cut-through over the last three election periods has created an uneven playing field that the Palaszczuk government and Labor Party have taken advantage of through dominating media coverage, creating their own in-house mini-media empire and controlling the narrative that we see and hear in the news cycle. This has resulted in mud not sticking where it should have in times of poor decisions and mismanagement.

As frequently noted on these pages, we are certainly not “all in this together”, as they have tried to make us believe.

What an appalling situation…

Clearly, frontline medical staff, doctors and nurses are pretty much overwhelmed by demands on their time and their skills. Valuable paramedical skills are locked up for hours as ambulances ramp for the same time, waiting for a bed at what should be an efficient frontline hospital in our rapidly growing urban region, Moreton Bay.

Before You Start!

These stretches can be done on a soft mat on the floor or in your bed. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these stretching exercises stop! Start slowly with each stretch and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the stretches and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really!

“Why?” I hear you ask, “Why hold a 12 week challenge in Spring?” Well my slowly expanding friends, it’s because it gets warmer in September.

Senior Gentle Back Stretching PELVIC TILT STRETCH

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor Keep hands on the tummy so you can feel movement of abdominal muscles and the low back as you correctly perform the pelvic tilt. Reverse the curve of your low back. Gently press the lower back against the floor by tightening the abdominal muscles and tilting or rolling the pelvis backward. Hold for 3 seconds, then relax all muscle contraction and allow return of curve in low back. Repeat slowly, only do as many as you feel comfortable doing . Each time you practice the stretch try and hold each tilt for a little longer until you can hold it for 20 seconds.

SIDE KNEE DROP

Lie on your back and bring both knees up toward the chest. Keep the shoulders flat on the floor as you allow the knees to drop to one side; only allow the knees to move as far as comfortable; Do not allow pain to develop. Keep the lower back flat on the floor or bed to avoid injury. Hold position for 10-30 seconds. Bring knees up to the midline and repeat on the other side. Hold position for 10- 30 seconds. Repeat until back feels more relaxed and looser.

KNEES TO CHEST BACK STRETCH

Keep your back and hips muscles relaxed while doing this low back stretch, so most of the work is done with the hands and arms. Do not cause pain during this lower back stretch, only a feeling of gentle traction. Lie on your back. Grab your knees. As you pull them up toward your chest monitor the feeling of stretching the low back. Move slowly and breathe during this stretch. Slowly push the lower back into the floor. Do this 8 to 10 times, making sure when you press down your lower back that you keep it there for a count of 5 - 10.

PRAYER POSE BACK STRETCH

Assume the posture for the prayer pose stretch, as shown here. Hold this posture and relax, while stretching the fingertips forward and the buttocks backward until a comfortable and gentle stretching sensation is felt in the spine and low back. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat as many times as is comfortable.

Q: When is a Satellite Hospital not a Hospital?

A: When it’s a Health Hub. Or None of the Above?

Whatever the right answer, what we’re now being told appears to add to the confusion as to whether the facilities can rightfully be called “hospitals” in the accepted understanding of the word.

Earlier this month Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced sites had been secured for new satellite hospitals in Caboolture, Pine Rivers, Redlands, and the Gold Coast, in addition to the preferred site already flagged for a Bribie Island satellite hospital.

“The four parcels of land were ideal locations for the health hubs,” she said.

Health hubs? Where did that come from? Premier, in case you hadn’t noticed, health hubs are greatly different to satellite hospitals, and whatever you choose to call them, as Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates points out, “These aren’t satellite hospitals, they’re health centres. A hospital has a theatre, emergency department and overnight beds.

“This is a desperate attempt by Labor as they lose control of our hospitals, and the location for Caboolture is just five streets away from the Caboolture Hospital and will be nothing more than a community day clinic. That’s if it is ever built.”

The Premier and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services said construction is expected to take around 12 months following completion of the business case and acquisition of land.

So, only time will tell what they’ll finally be called, what they may deliver and when.

It’s all happening at Beachmere Community Garden!

Helen from the Lions Club of Beachmere presents Beachmere Community Garden Chairperson David with a donation while some of the members look on.

The fledgling Beachmere Community Garden has already been very busy, with several events and activities already undertaken. The LOCAL News had a chat with Chairperson David to find out more about the association and its role in the community.

Firstly, David, where is it?

It’s in a great location, right in the centre of town, next to the Hub, Bowls Club and the water tower.

So why do we need a community garden in Beachmere?

We believe it is important to understand where our food comes from and to have a connection to the production of the food.

Whether that is in growing it yourself or having some knowledge of the people and process that grew it.

Is it all about the food then?

No, not at all. As our name states, this is

a Community Garden, and a major focus will be on community. We plan to provide a green space for everyone in the community by making the garden as accessible as possible. We see this as an area where people can meet and learn about food production and be inspired to apply new knowledge and skills in their garden at home.

What kind of gardens will there be?

Whilst the overall objective is food production, the design incorporates sensory gardens that stimulates all of the senses.

This will be achieved by the selection of plants, water features and other elements.

This type of garden is a wonderful tool for assisting in disability support, education of young children and mental stimulation for elderly or people with dementia.

Will there be individual allotments?

No. The group has decided to focus on the sensory design and a community

Members of other local community gardens on a recent visit to learn about Beachmere Community Garden sharing ethos, where produce will be donated to charities, kept for seed saving or used in cooking demonstrations. Any excess would then be shared amongst the members.

Has the garden started yet?

There is nothing on site yet as we are still working through Council requirements.

The members have been extremely busy with a lot of work going on in the background. The lease on 300m2 of MBRC land was approved in June. Since then, we’ve held a demonstration on water efficient gardening, and we’ve begun our monthly plant stall / garage sales, which will be on the first Saturday each month, on site from 8am to 11am.

How is this project being funded?

Like most new not-for-profit associations, we have started with no funds, so the members have been busily fundraising and applying for grants. We’ve been lucky

enough to receive some small grants from Moreton Bay Regional Council, and the Lions Club of Beachmere have generously offered to support us by matching our fundraising efforts for a year. We are very grateful for the support from Council, Lions Club of Beachmere, and local businesses.

How do people get involved?

I’d invite people to check out our website and Facebook page and read our guiding principles and newsletters, and if this sounds like something they are interested in, then come along to a meeting and meet the other members. There are various levels of membership based on how involved you want to be.

There is a huge sigh of a relief, like a weight lifting off their shoulders when I advise clients they no longer need submit a tax return ever again. It’s the end of an era for them, having lodged a return all their working life. However, if they receive dividends with franking credits attached, then a simple “application for franking credit refund form” can still be lodged.

But how do you know if you need to lodge a return?

Often, when retired, a couple are under the tax limit but when one partner passes away and all the assets and income are transferred to the surviving spouse, this could place that spouse in a taxable threshold. Not having lodged a return for some time, they are suddenly thrust back into a taxable situation.

Registered with an ABN means you must lodge a return even if the business income is Nil. When PAYG withholding tax has been deducted from your wage, you must also lodge a return. Total income above the threshold pertaining to your situation even allowing for tax offsets, a tax return is required. Don’t forget to review a capital gain relating to a sale of property.

If the gain is substantial, you may be back in a taxable position for that year and a return required. Not your private home though.

Receiving an Australian Pension and a Foreign pension does not automatically require a return, but with the ever-changing exchange rates, consideration of the total income should be reviewed each year.

If you receive no income for a year, or are below the threshold, a “No Return Required” can be lodged with the ATO. This gives relief for that year only as circumstances may change annually. The ATO must otherwise receive a return each year unless a “No Further Returns” form is lodged. Just because you don’t need a return in any one year doesn’t mean the ATO knows. You must advise them.

Living Without Fear and Enduring Political Stupidity…

This article is fiction. It is a figment of the writer’s imagination. It bears no resemblance to any person, living or dead, or to any set of circumstances real or imagined. It is entirely frivolous fiction. It is also essential to understand that the idea of Poobahs and Panjandrums does not, and never has, applied to the Queensland Police Service.

The People decided to live without fear. It began as many of these things always begin, with unconfirmed reports drifting in upon the social wind. The wind ruffled the remaining wispy hair, which had been streakily glued across the head of the person, who was the One In Authority (OIA).

There were quite a number of Ones In Authority.

They got the job from the people looking for someone to tell them they were safe from the Rider of the Pale Horse. The Ones In Authority lived in a tall building in a big city, and from that building they could be in charge of everything.

The Ones In Authority were better at telling the people they were safe from the Rider of the Pale Horse than the other mob, who wanted to be in charge of everything, mainly because the other mob were still trying to work out who was actually in charge of them.

So, as time crept along, the Ones In Authority began to realise that this was an easy gig. They could do what they liked, and they liked doing that! All they had to do was to keep the mob thinking that danger surrounded them and that they, the current OIAs were the only alternative The People had to save them from the Rider of the Pale Horse.

And, to help them do that, they had many assets; they had people who had titles and badges – there were minions, plenty of them,

who did not warrant a capital letter to their title. There were Poobahs, not so many of them because they were pretty significant, and finally, there were Panjandrums who were really, really important.

So there they were, the little army of the OIAs: minions, Poobahs and Panjandrums. They all had big shiny badges, and in their minds, they were necessary. The Ones In Authority relied upon their little army to keep The People scared, confused and dependant upon the pronouncements from the Temple of the Ones In Authority.

And, so far, it had worked pretty well. Although not truly scared, The People were sufficiently concerned about the Rider of the Pale Horse’s vile poison that they obeyed the rules. They stayed home, they wore face masks, they crept about trying not to be seen, and they stood apart in certain places where there might be more than one person, following the New Rule of “Social Distancing”, a new phrase in most lives.

They read the signs posted on walls and reception desks: warnings that told them how to wash their hands, even though they were adults and had been living everyday lives until the Pale Horse arrived. It was clear that the Ones In Authority knew that The People did not know how to wash their hands. So there had to be notices to explain how to do that!

There were many signs, in many places, telling The People what to do and how to do it.

There were also many rules about where The People could go and how many of them could go there.

There were also many rules telling The People

how to live their lives, bury their dead, marry each other, visit each other and worship their Gods.

All these rules were decided by the Ones In Authority because only they knew what was really happening and, also, because they could make the rules: no one else could!

For quite a long time, The People were quite ready to follow all these rules. They accepted that to be safe, these rules were fair and applied across the whole community.

But, there were some things that were happening that The People could see were not fair or even equal. A few feathers were becoming ruffled. And that is where the minions, the Poobahs and the Panjandrums had a role to play.

They had the badges. They had the power. They told The People what to do, and most did it because they thought that was the right way.

It must be remembered that The People did not elect the Poobahs and the Panjandrums. Oh no!

No-one did.

The Ones In Authority picked these particular creatures, and they did this so that if things went South, and that was possible, then it would be the Poobahs and the Panjandrums who would cop it!

To keep The People frightened enough to accept the impositions on their lives, it was important that the whole climate of fear was kept alive and refreshed; this was the job of all the Poobahs. They did this by appearing on television saying things like, “We’re all in this together”, or “I will do anything to keep The People safe”, or “We need more time to track this down, or people will die.”

After a while, The People became The Mob and began to question what they could see as evident double standards. If you were a footballer or a footballer’s wife, you could easily cross borders. If you were one of The Mob and your parents were dying, tough luck! You could not visit their deathbed, nor could you even go to their funeral.

Examples of double standards began to appear in a number of places. Celebrities could arrive and depart without too much trouble, the Chief Health Panjandrum, with no apparent experience in state economics, commented that celebrities were needed to assist the economy.

And some of The Mob thought, “Now who knew that?”

More importantly, the nonsense became apparent at the border regions of the state.

Children used the school bus to take them to school in one rural area, as do thousands of Australian bush children across the nation. In one particular case, the school was in one state, and the children lived in another state; a matter of 26.5 metres apart was the difference.

But that was enough for the badge-carrying Poobahs and Panjandrums! Yes, Sir, that was enough. The children who lived in one State, 26.5 metres from the other State, were denied entry to the school, and the bus was not allowed to cross the border; the Poobah’s badges were out, held high, and their beady eyes were glittering.

Nevertheless, the bus driver, contracted by the Ones In Authority, had to keep driving an empty bus to get paid, a contract requirement.

So, there we are. A school bus driving about with no one in it because it could not cross the border, occupied solely by the bus driver, not responsible for this mindless stupidity, who unhappily went about the task of driving an empty bus to nowhere in particular.

As these examples of political stupidity increased, many of The Mob became unsettled.

The scene did not pass the pub test, and people started to think, “Well, bugger this!”

As normal people do, once they smell the rat they are onto it like robbers’ dogs and the idea of living in fear and creeping about the place, blindly accepting the diktats of the Poobahs and Panjandrums, suddenly became wrong!

And, that is exactly what happened. The Mob decided enough was enough. They knew, because they were not stupid, that they would have to learn to live with this disease from the far-off Orient, and normal precautions like wearing masks and getting vaxxed were the answers.

They began to call out political stupidity when they saw it, and there was plenty of it about.

They decided that they were not hostages to the political fortunes of the Ones In Authority and that as much as possible, within the boundaries of commonsense, they were going to live without fear.

And, generally speaking, that is a bloody good idea.

Tragic end to Pilot dies in Bribie Island crash Caboolture mother’s disappearance Human remains found in August inside a submerged 4WD off the Spinnaker Sound boat ramp at Sandstone Point have been identified as those of Caboolture mother Amy Schulkins, missing since December 30 last year.

Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A Facebook page set up to help find Ms Schulkins attracted more than 30,000 followers around the world making it a high profile missing person case with significant community interest.

Initially there were a number of reported sightings of Ms Schulkins driving her white Nissan Patrol over the months following her disappearance, and a sign calling for information on the disappearance had been posted at the Benabrow Ave roundabout for many of these months. However, extensive air and land searches by police and volunteers proved unsuccessful.

More recently the scope of the search was widened to include boat ramps and the waters around the Caboolture and Moreton Bay areas, with sonar technology used to search local waterways. The vehicle was eventually found submerged at Spinnaker Sound about 50 metres from the boat ramp.

This is a sad outcome to a tragic local incident and sincere condolences go to Amy’s family and friends, who have thanked the public and all those involved in the search for their support.

Rescue crew inspects the wreckage of the Caloundra-based Acroduster in which the pilot died A light aircraft crash in Pumicestone Passage on the 18th August claimed the life of the pilot, who was the sole occupant. No radio call or distress signal was heard from the homebuilt American Acroduster aerobatic biplane before it crashed, with witnesses reporting it “descended very quickly” into the mudflats.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau said the aircraft departed Caloundra Airfield for a flight over the Bribie Island area. At around 9.20am the crew of a helicopter operating from Caboolture on a training flight saw what appeared to be aircraft parts falling from the sky and then observed the fuselage of an aircraft located in the mudflats near Long Island. A dedicated rescue helicopter winched a rescue crew to the accident site, and it was confirmed that the pilot was deceased.

The Acroduster is a popular American home-build aerobatic biplane as well as modern Cessnas, Pipers, Jabirus, Foxbats and helicopters used for training. In a tribute to the confidence pilots and owners have in their vintage and modern aircraft many of these planes were up over Bribie the very next day after the incident.

Life must go on and risk is part of life.

There is a lesson in that for everyone at present.

Improved 5G coverage on way Narangba, Caboolture, Morayfield and Ningi residents and businesses will soon have more options when choosing a 5G network provider, with Optus and Vodaphone continuing their 5G expansion into the Longman electorate with a series of mobile tower upgrades under way.

Optus plans to install 5G infrastructure on existing towers at Raynbird Road, Narangba, Male Road, Caboolture, Oakey Flat Road, Morayfield and at Bribie Island Road, near Browns Road. Vodaphone is also planning to add 5G capabilities to the Raynbird Road mobile tower at Narangba as well as the tower at Bribie Island Road, near Theo Greene Park.

This new infrastructure would operate alongside the Telstra 5G network in several locations, resulting in more

options for customers when choosing a mobile provider.

“I have been working with the major telcos for some time to get improved mobile coverage in the Longman electorate and I welcome any upgrades such as these,” said Member for Longman Terry Young.

“Having more options for customers is healthy in regard to competition among the major telcos.

Volunteer overseas without leaving home (for now)

By Staff Writer Mozza Missing your trips overseas? Want to volunteer to do something with a broader impact on the world? This is now possible through the Remote Volunteering Program offered by Australian Volunteers International (AVI).

There are many roles that can be done from home via ZOOM meetings, email and Skype without the need to travel to the country. There are also projects that can be started now, remotely, on a 90-day assignment and completed later in the country when travel has been reopened.

Some of the assignments available include writing funding proposals for not-forprofit organisations in a developing country, advising and educating nurses in developing nations on health topics like palliative care or disease control, writing policy documents for international universities on Human Resources, Equal Access or Waste Recycling and Reduction for staff and students, sharing knowledge on agriculture, website and database development, marketing, business development, the environment, the arts and teaching English.

AVI have traditionally recruited suitably-qualified or experienced volunteers to undertake projects in country for 6 months or a year, but have had to adapt the program during COVID border closures to better suit home activities over shorter periods of 12 to 18 weeks.

There are currently dozens of assignments advertised asking for volunteers in many developing countries such as Bhutan, Cambodia, Micronesia, Fiji, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Vietnam and more (you’ll find a full list on the AVI website - australianvolunteers. com ).

Pumicestone Passage: a double-ended Barrier Estuary

Pumicestone Passage was believed to have been created around 5,000 BC when the sea level rose from the last Ice Age. Whilst Egyptian pyramids were somehow built moving huge sandstone blocks weighing up to 2.5 tonnes, in Australia waterways and islands were being created by the movement of sand.

Flinders fired his musket at the group on shore and wounded the man who had thrown the spear. The Aborigines fled the beach and Flinders named this southern shore and site of the confrontation Point Skirmish. There is an area on the modern map marked Skirmish Point but that should not be confused with the actual place of the incident which is now known as South Point.

Flinders needed to repair leaks in his boat (possibly made by the errant spear) and pulled it ashore further up the passage. The leaks were found just below the Plimsoll Line and were plugged with a mixture of seaweed and ground pumice stone as a temporary measure. Coincidentally, a restaurant named Plimsolls once operated near this site in the 1980s – their “wilted greens” tasted a lot like seaweed. This is also the area where the Steamship Koopa served the Bongaree Jetty and began to carry visitors from Brisbane via Redcliffe.

Bribie Island was formed during the transfer of sands moving from south to north with the changed current direction. During this formation it was possible that openings or passages had existed in a number of locations along the island. Some of these positions are probably indicated by the location of islands in the Passage which may have generated at the outlet to the ocean or simply at the head of a creek.

Flinders waded some seven kilometres further north near what is now called White Patch. Historians believe that White Patch was eventually called the Town of Bribie in 1877.

Pumicestone Passage is a double-ended Barrier Estuary between Bribie Island to the east and the mainland to the west. The narrow neck of Bribie has always been subject to potential tidal breach, and in geological terms the island is ephemeral (short-lived) so it is expected that the spit will vanish at some time. Maybe even in our lifetime.

Once his boat was repaired, Flinders explored the mainland side of the passage and scaled Mt. Beerburrum to get a better view of the area.

Bungaree aborigines the meeting was peaceful until one attempted to remove Flinders’ hat. Flinders refused so the Europeans and Bungaree returned to their boat. As they left the man who had tried to remove Flinders’ hat threw a spear that missed any of the crew.

Every day, photos of sunsets, sunrises, the Bribie bridge, pelicans and dolphins are posted all over social media. But who was here first? Whose footprints first broke the sand on the beach?

In our next issue Mij Na-Rod will recount the history from the 1800s to the present.

Who were the first white explorers?

And how did the name of the passage eventuate?

In the beginning, the Bribie Bin Chicken (Threskiornis molucca Bribis) roamed the island carefree and fancy-footed. Even this bird has evolved after centuries of living on a sand island scavenging for food. The Ibis of today lacks the pectinate claw on the middle toe of each foot. This foot digit is longer and oddly called “Moreton Toe” when first discovered by James Cook – the same man who also named Moreton Bay on 15 May 1770.

Two days later, on Thursday 17 May 1770, while sailing up the east coast of Australia on HMS Endeavour, Lieutenant James Cook sighted the Glass House Mountains, so-named by him as the reflections and the shape of the hills reminded him of the glass manufacturing houses back in his homeland of England. Cook named the area Glass House Bay and was the first European to name this stretch of water.

At that time the inhabitants of Bribie Island were the Djindubari people (broadly part of the ‘Kabi’ or more correctly Gubbi Gubbi people).

It is believed that around 1799 the recorded pre-contact population of Aboriginal people on Bribie Island was 600 – 1,000. However, by 1891 none remained on the Island and only four lived on the mainland.

On 16 July 1799 Captain Matthew Flinders left Glass House Bay about 3.2 kilometres east of the shore in the sloop the Norfolk. He sailed southwest between Moreton Island and

Matthew Flinders the mainland parallel to the southern shore of Bribie Island until spotting an opening in the low western shore.

He anchored at 8:15am and transferred with a small crew, a cat and Bongaree in a small craft.

Wait - who or what is a Bongaree?

Well Bongaree, or Bungaree, was an Aboriginal from the people of Kuringgai in the Broken Bay area north of Sydney, who was known as an explorer, entertainer, and Aboriginal community leader. He served Matthew Flinders for many years as an interpreter, not only on this voyage of discovery but also between 1801 and 1803 on HMS Investigator with Flinders’ pet cat ‘Trim’. Flinders described Bungaree as a “worthy and brave fellow” who saved his expeditions multiple times.

Sadly, there are no statues to celebrate Bungaree in this country. Yet you can walk the streets of Sydney and see magnificent statues of Apollo, Athena, William Shakespeare, Queen Victoria.

There are three statues of Flinders’ cat Trim around Australia. But none of Bungaree! Talk about a cat-astrophe Flinders landed on Bribie Island, unaware that it wasn’t the mainland of Australia, and met a small group of Aborigines who had gathered on the beach. Our local area is lucky to have one of Australia’s premier growers of indoor plants, Queensland Indoor Foliage (QIF) nearby in Ningi. QIF was established in the 1970s and has since grown into a substantial operation, with nurseries in Ningi, Alstonville and Coffs Harbour.

Managed by Ted Watts, a local man with over 25 years’ experience in horticulture and nursery management, QIF grows all of the plants mentioned in this article.

Unfortunately, QIF is a wholesale nursery and is not open to the public.

However, Mitre 10 Bribie Island stocks these plants and they couldn’t be fresher or healthier since they only travel from Ningi to Bribie.

So this month I have asked Ted Watts himself to write an article on his wholesale nursery. I try to buy as local as possible, and I know as gardeners you will appreciate Queensland Indoor Foliage’s perspective on plant growing in our area.

But through careful selection of plants from around the world (mainly the tropics), we have available to us many plants which thrive indoors in our local conditions. Aside from creating a pleasant aesthetic, there are measurable health benefits of living with indoor plants, with plants providing a vital air filtering and purification function. There is also considerable evidence of the benefits of having plants in workplaces for both mental and physical well-being, leading to productivity benefits.

The whales are gone and it’s time to breathe a sigh of relief when it comes to those pre-dawn runs out to your favourite spot. Plenty of stable weather this month saw the boat ramp car parks filled to capacity on numerous occasions. With all that traffic on the water it’s no surprise there’s been lots of great fish caught this month.

For those with a taste for fresh calamari, there’s still large numbers of squid around. The weed beds at Tangalooma are choc-a-bloc and the crystal clear water can make for quite a visually pleasing little session. You can often clearly see the squid rise from the weed to charge down the jig. It’s certainly a great one for the kids! Squid have excellent eyesight so it’s essential to use a very light leader, around 6 – 10lb. The secret weapon for me lately I’ve found has been the new Sephia Flash jigs from Shimano. The flickering little mirror inside the body seems to be irresistible to most squid and little to no action is required to get a bite. Often just casting toward a patch of weed and letting the jig sink is enough to rouse any squid lurking nearby. The combined bag limit of 50 Squid and Cuttlefish (20 for Tiger Squid) is more than generous, so only take what you can eat, or plan to use for bait, then leave the rest for next time. Large live squid make excellent baits for big Kingfish and Cobia.

While the water temperature is still a little on the cool side, they’re not feeding aggressively just yet, meaning they’re still a bit “lure shy” but they’re readily smashing livebaits fished at mid-depth. Kingies are a schooling fish and often school up with other King’s of the same size. There’s plenty of rats around but there are schools of trophy, plus-sized, fish out there to be found.

Because they’re a schooling fish, where you find one, you’ll find more. Kingfish are very powerful fish! A 20kg GT would tow a 20kg King backwards for about 30seconds before the Kingy would tow the GT backwards for the rest of the day.

Their brutish nature means they’re often targeted for catch and release as they’re an incredible sportfish. If you’re targeting them to keep for the table then it’s worth mentioning that the slimmer looking fish usually have poor quality flesh that goes mushy when cooked. Look for healthy fish in good condition with a fat, round,

The bag limit of two fish over 60cm might seem tight but when you consider how much flesh comes off just one fish and the fact that it doesn’t freeze well means that two fish per person is more than adequate.

I briefly mentioned the Yellowfin Tuna last month that will be migrating past us at the moment. Thanks to a hot tip from one of the commercial long liners on social media, us local recreational anglers were made aware of a “finger” of warm water protruding, in our direction, from the East Australian Current. A very small handful of keen locals made the trek out over the shelf and were well-rewarded for their efforts with a couple of big barrels of Yellowfin Tuna. They’re there! It’s great to see the barrier between rec’s and pro’s being broken down due to the mutual respect and sharing of knowledge that’s developed over recent times through social media.

This month was highlighted by one of the biggest events on the SEQ fishing tournament calendar, and that’s the SCF

Fishing Research and Sustainability Tournament. This year’s tournament saw great participation numbers and dished out over $60,000 in prizes. It coincided with a nice little window of calm weather which made for an exciting and competitive tournament. For those who were in with a real shot at the bickies, there were quite a lot of nail biting moments as the live leader board regularly chopped and changed throughout the tournament. It was one of our own, a local Bribie angler, Ashlee Morris, who took out greatest honours, being crowned Champion Female Angler for the tournament. Ash’s bag of 45 fish made up of 24 different species was enough for her to claim two cheques this year: Champion Female Angler, and she also took out the Giant Herring category. This saw Ash continue her legacy from previous years as a formidable force on the SEQ tournament scene. The annual SCF Research tournament is very professionally run and is a great cause to get behind as it’s all in the name of science and sustainability. Hope to see you there next year!

The Gala Day was dedicated to the memory of Heather Ball who was an active member of Bribie Netball for many years and her passion and vision and dedication to the Club made it what it is today.

Under the guidance of a dedicated group of ladies Bribie Island Netball Club (BINC) was founded in 1979. BINC was the vision of Janelle O’Brien along with Fay Wildman, Cheryl Thornley, Robyn Balmer, Marilyn Kerrison, Rhonda Johnson, Lorraine Latham and Maxine Ryan and bought netball to youngsters in and around Bribie Island. In its inaugural year the Club had around 5 teams in the Redcliffe Competition. The following year in 1980 Caboolture Netball Association (CNA) invited the Club to join their Saturday competition where it has been competing ever since.

When Heather moved to Bribie, she soon

Gala Day at Bribie Netball Club became involved with playing and then arranging competitions on the island. This was the beginning of a long association between Heather and BINC. Heather held positions with BINC over several years covering many roles as a parent, player, coach, and active committee member as President, Umpires Convenor, Club

delegate, Planning Liaison officer, Bribie Seniors co-ordinator and as a mentor and advocate to many of our players.

This culminated in the receiving of her Life Membership.

Thanks to the BINC community for coming out and making this inaugural Gala Day and Memorial for Heather such a fun and special day, with the new plaque dedicated to Heather’s memory taking pride of place in our Club house

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island.

The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.
