This month’s feature story by Matt Owen examines the continued traffic issues on the Bribie Island Bridge – and offers some community-contributed solutions. Another recent accident on the bridge caused 2 to 3 hours delays from Ningi to Bribie Island.

With suitable land for a duplicate crossing already bought, the design and location finalised, why can’t the state government get on with it?

We also have the popular “Out and About with Mozza” articles discussing current public concerns in our region. And of course, Cranky Lizard is at it again - this time giving a serve to our local and federal governments.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to report on the progress of local state infrastructure developments as our state member has not sent me any information on work she may be doing in this region, although it was encouraging to learn that her recent appearance at Beachmere was well-attended.

Three absolute angels I would like to say a huge THANK YOU to the three ladies who appeared from nowhere to help my dear wife who, on Monday 21 June, had a really terrible fall on the road through Morayfield Shopping Centre car park.

Two of them sat next to her on the road and comforted her while the third called for an ambulance. Also, thanks to the gentleman who parked his car in the road and redirected traffic to stop any cars coming through, and to the shopping centre staff who arrived to help.

The ambulance appeared about 20 minutes later and took her to Redcliffe hospital where, after various tests, the cut above her left eye was stitched and a cast applied to her left wrist.

She was discharged from the Emergency Department and I was able to take her home that evening.

The stitches have now been removed, the cast replaced with a wrist support and she has recovered really well.

Historic time span In response to Laura Boers’ letter in the previous issue, I wonder why the amount of time that the aboriginal has been on this planet is of any relevance to the present problems that may or may not exist for the indigenous people? I have frequently seen the time span mentioned in the past.

Most continents of this world have archaeological sites revealing major civilizations that had existed in past times. These sites show construction on a large-scale involving engineering, design, and planning.

We have discovered evidence of dinosaurs in Australia, yet I have not heard of any major indigenous sites being found and wonder if the aboriginal civilization that the First Fleet encountered was the most advanced stage that they achieved. This being the case, I would suggest that highlighting the time frame of existence may create a negative appraisal of the aboriginals’ abilities.

I must state that any aboriginals I have got to know in the past have been genuine and gentle human beings and many remain as lifelong friends. I simply state that the only way to change these matters is to focus on what is ahead of us. We cannot change the past.

Paradise Lost?

My wife and I moved to Bribie Island a little over 20 years ago. Then it was a sleepy hamlet, people were very quiet and reserved. However, now, we have an element that has changed Bribie; hoons, brats, morons and anti-social types.

Where did things go wrong? Social Welfare payments to anti-social types, a High School that does not instil true character building, a police force that has increased three-fold but does not seem to have power to interact or create a situation where people respect Law and Order.

True, most of what we get is due to poor parenting, but then a lack of interaction by the police to deter anti-social activities and firmer control of school students at the High School

doesn’t help.

Respect your environment and those around you, have fun but not at cost to others! Enjoy what we have - Paradise!

Indigenous Heritage

While we very much appreciate Laura Boers’ concern for our Indigenous heritage (June 30), there are two things that she has wrong. “65,000 years” would put us firmly in the Neanderthal Era, and that is not acceptable - ask any football player who has had a banana thrown onto the field! Rock art has been carbon dated to 36,000 years, any further back than that is just dreaming.

And “Sovereignty” is a European word and concept and is totally foreign to this land. It infers a single clan with a single leader; we had hundreds of clans, all with different language.

Laura mentioned five tribes just in the Moreton Bay area, and the 2019 50cent coin listed 14 active languages.

You can’t cede what never existed.

The land doesn’t belong to us, we belong to the land!

A question of balance?

Mistreatment of migrants like the Biloela family make me wonder about who we think we are as Australians. When will we learn to live in harmony and stop denying the existence of racism?

Our society is changing and our leaders need to reflect the diversity of the Australian population. The ALP has succeeded in a balance of genders by introducing quotas, so perhaps both parties should have quotas for candidates who are not Anglo-Celtic males.

Perhaps a more-balanced Parliament would be more willing to change the Constitution to reflect the stories of the original Australians and recent migrants which help make up our culture.

Every culture is held together by myths and legends, whether based on religious beliefs or historical events. There is more to Australia than Anzac and Australia Days, and Christianity. If we had more diverse leaders in the centres of power, they may have more sympathy for those who wish to include a voice from the original Australians, and stop mistreating refugees.

Bribie Island Bridge: Time For Action!

There was another crash on the Bribie Island bridge recently, the fifth in a little over 12 months.

When the bridge is blocked, cars, buses and trucks stop, they grind to a halt, normally for hours at a time, turning a 10-minute drive into two hours or more.

There is one way on and one way off.

Kids wait at schools after hours, nobody moves, the whole island comes to a stop in one big traffic jam. Emergency vehicles cannot access the island and traffic backs up along Bribie Island Road and then congestion banks up Bestmann Road, through Sandstone Point, pretty much all the way back to the Bruce Highway. A scene we have seen too many times.

The Bribie Island bridge was constructed in 1963, making it 58 years old. Prior to this, access to the island was by boat or barge.

Some reports have put the expected lifespan of the bridge at 75 years, meaning a new bridge will certainly be required by 2038. Other reports, based on updated traffic estimates, say the lifespan is until 2031. Another 10 to 17 years away.

Former member for Pumicestone Lisa France was the sitting member when land was purchased just north of the current bridge on the mainland and island.

Reports were undertaken, based around a $150m duplicate bridge, 15m north of the existing bridge, comprising four lanes and a footpath.

This would provide the option of using the ‘old’ bridge for recreational purposes such as fishing, walking, cycling and maybe even markets. That would be cool, and it all sounds great. Except, and here is the ‘but’, this report was published in 2014, seven years ago and under a different government. It will be extremely interesting to see what the actual cost is when the new bridge is eventually completed.

Remember the estimate of $150m in 2004?

It would not be surprising if this doubled by 2030.

Reports but still no action The $205,000 DTMR report in 2004 and the land acquisition should have been the catalyst for change. But nothing has happened. Nothing. There was the guard rail that was added over 20 years ago after a tragic accident. There has been regular maintenance, but no improvement, no

implementation of devices or strategies to limit the number of crashes. Some people will just blame drivers 100%, but surely there are things that can be done to improve safety before, on and over the bridge?

to close this entry point, please consider adding a sign, say 100m before the turn, to say something like, “Indicate now to turn left onto Sylvan Beach Esplanade”. This turn does sneak up on people, it is sharp and it is dangerous.

In fact, after an accident in November of last year I spent the best part of a Sunday putting together some recommendations of what could be done to improve the safety of the bridge. This was then put forward to a local Facebook community group for further comment and feedback.

With over 600 responses it was a worthwhile exercise, even if it did bring a few keyboard warriors out.

2. Investigate the effect of reducing or increasing the speed limit on the bridge to 50km/hr or 70km/hr, which may be an option if some of the changes below are made. What would this do to traffic flow?

How about a fixed speed camera? Maybe the resulting fines could help pay for the new bridge?

At this point, it must be asked, what causes these accidents? The usual suspects like tailgating, braking too quickly, not watching the road, enjoying the view, speeding, going too slow, veering into the other lane, using mobile phones, not knowing it’s a dangerous stretch of road – the list goes on.

So what can be done in the next few years while we wait for a new bridge? (Side note: My intuition tells me that it will be announced as part of the 2024 State Election and will be built just before the 2028 election; that seems to be how things work these days. Big projects seem to be announced and delivered in election cycles).

In amongst all the publicity from the Labor Government around the Bribie Island Satellite Hospital leading up to the 2020 State Election, many may have forgotten there was also $4m earmarked for a study and planning for the new bridge. We’re still waiting to be told what this $4m study will show compared to the previous report completed in 2014 at a cost of $205,000.

Community Recommendations So with that said, here are the 15 recommendations that were provided from myself and the community through this online discussion. None of these are state-of-the-art, but are in use in other locations.

1. The sharp left turn onto Sylvan Beach Esplanade. This could be turned into a cul-de-sac. It would increase traffic flow to the first roundabout which would have to go up Eucalypt St. It would also inconvenience some local residents who would have to drive a bit further. It would also benefit them by having less traffic past their homes. If it is decided best not

3. Place chevrons on each lane so drivers keep the minimum two-second distance between them and the vehicles in front of them. It would be good if this was policed as well. Do people ever get fined for tailgating?

4. Place signage at the mainland end of the bridge warning about road safety on the bridge. This is similar to ‘black spot’ safety signage on other roads.

5. Investigate widening the driving lanes by removing the pedestrian path. Use this space between the lanes as a ‘spacer’ between the lanes, as successful ly done along the D’Aguilar Hwy. This widens the gap between cars and gives additional space and time.

6. The pedestrian access could then be built as an extension to the current structure. Ideally this would be about 2m wide to allow 2-way access for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters.

7. Review the laws around fishing/jumping from the bridge. If it is legal, cater for it. If it isn’t, police it. One way or the other; at the moment it is neither.

8. Add safety paint/audible/vibrating markers so when cars veer off drivers are warned, hopefully with sufficient notice to correct their path.

9. Investigate the current public transport system that NO tourists currently use. Imagine a Park and Ride, free buses or even alternative transport like electric buses etc. There should be a way to make this work. And, as we are an island, you would think ferries would be a viable means of transport. One of the objectives of a public transport system is to remove vehicles from the road and ease congestion. Terminals could be established at Redcliffe and Brisbane City to start with.

This would also benefit locals heading to these destinations – not just tourists

coming here.

10. Install electronic signage that shows if you are travelling too close – this would serve as a warning for cars to allow more space between each other.

11. Fencing/visual blocking of the view.

This works well on other bridges and increases the focus of drivers on the road.

The Pumicestone Passage view is amazing and many drivers just can't help but sneak a peak. Note how effectively this strategy works on the Gateway Bridge and Maroochy River.

12. Review of the Sandstone Point Hotel and other community events traffic management during large scale events.

Is enough being done? Do developers contribute enough to infrastructure?

13. Review of existing roundabouts to ensure line of site/maintenance/safety is at optimum levels. In particular, pulling out on the first roundabout from Bongaree is often difficult. What effect do all of these traffic lights have on traffic flow?

Should there really be so many?

14. Build tourism infrastructure on different parts of the Island so tourists don’t just go to 2-3 main locations. Review the local road network on the island for new routes/take pressure off high traffic areas.

15. Create a tourism strategy and visitor management strategy to assist with large scale events, holiday season and traffic management.

These are all simple options which you would hope traffic engineers and professionals in this space would be able to consider and perhaps even improve on.

We continue to see car accidents on a regular basis that impact greatly on residents and visitors to the island. Sitting in traffic for hours is nobody’s idea of fun and when you couple it with the never-ending Old Toorbul Road works and associated delays it isn’t good enough.

It isn’t good enough that nothing has been done. Time to do Something. Just don’t do Nothing!

The Petition of Electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws the attention of the House to the Bribie Island Bridge and the bridge’s limited capability to accommodate the steep increase in the population and visitor traffic to Bribie Island. Also with the increasing number of local and state development approvals, infrastructure has not keep pace with the demands of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Your Petitioners therefore request the House to immediately commence the process of the feasibility, design, and construction of a new Bribie Island Bridge to accommodate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic to Bribie Island. The Federal Government has made $20mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request this funding be used towards this project.

Bribie Community Volunteers Recognised

Liz Radajewski, Commodore of Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island, receiving the award from Member for Longman Terry Young Seven Bribie Island volunteers have been recognised for their contribution to the community in the 2021 Longman Volunteer Awards.

Amir Cao, Amanda Waters, Christine Stoddart, Petra and Hans Krumbholz, Herb Coleman and Liz Radajewski recently received their awards from the Federal Member for Longman Terry Young.

Ms Cao has been involved in many community groups on the island including, Busy Fingers, Bribie State Primary School, Bribie State High School P&C and Bribe Volunteer Marine Rescue.

Amanda Waters has volunteered for over 15 years, mostly School P&Cs at Banksia Beach State School and Bribie Island State High School.

Christine Stoddart has volunteered with Bribie Respite and Support

Services Inc. since 2015, goes over and above her normal duties and is adored by staff, clients and the management committee.

Since coming to Australia, Petra and Hans Krumbholz have been extremely generous with their time and made financial contributions to many local charities, organisations and events, including the Sandstone Carols by Candlelight.

Herb Coleman has been a key member of Sandstone Point Community Association since 2003, has overseen management and improvement of the community hall and has worked to get many other local improvements.

Liz Radajewski was the first woman to be appointed as the Commodore of Volunteer Marine Rescue Bribie Island and has taken part in countless marine rescues over the years, all while looking after her elderly mother.

Presenting the awards Mr Young said, “Volunteers are the unsung heroes in every community and my electorate of Longman is no different.

“Our volunteers are true champions.

You don’t always see them, as many of them are working hard behind the scenes, but they are there, just getting on with the job at hand.

“That’s why it was a pleasure to acknowledge many of the volunteers in our community at the 2021 Longman Volunteer Awards.”

Playing the blame game I’m angry and sick of the Queensland State Government’s blame game, particularly as played by the premier of late. I’m horrified by her action in blaming the NSW Premier and the Prime Minister for the unforgivable treatment to a family who wanted to let a son say goodbye to his dying father.

I also can’t believe the hypocrisy from this premier in relation to keeping over-70s in lockdown, yet allowing the footy to go ahead with no social distancing and not everyone wearing a mask.

All I have seen from this government is “blame the LNP” for every mistake they make. I also see the Chief Health Officer scare people out of getting the jab, which annoys me no end.

Now I find out that our supposed hospital on Bribie Island is only going to be a glorified day service with no long stay or overnight beds. What a joke they are! If you have a heart attack, a stroke or break a bone you still have to go to Caboolture. Shame, Qld State Government! Stop blaming everyone else and fix your own massive mistakes - especially in our health system.

BANG Forum Attracts Locals

Your Chance to Have a Say on Satellite Hospital Service Following the announcement of proposed satellite hospitals for Bribie Island and Caboolture, the local member, Ali King, has invited Pumicestone residents to submit suggestions for services they would like to see included.

A large number of Beachmere residents attended the latest Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) Forum at which Ali King, State Member for Pumicestone, was the guest speaker.

Ms King acknowledged the difficulties faced during Covid restrictions by both residents and local businesses and thanked all those attending, and residents across the region, for complying with the health guidelines.

Speaking on Transport & Main Roads’ feedback from the recent community consultation process for planning for upgrades to Beachmere Road, Ms King said that $775,000 was being spent on the priority and link planning for the initial expenditure of $7m. TMR indicated that they had never seen such high community engagement for any similar project, with the biggest issues being road widening and smoothing, better turning and safety pull-over areas, better bus stops and that

the road should allow for growth and flood immunity. Work should commence late 2022 to early 2023 and Ms King advised that should the initial amount of $7m not be sufficient to undertake initial priority works she would apply for additional funding to complete those works.

The contentious Shoreline Management, or ‘A line’ system, which affects residents whose properties are impacted by shoreline erosion was briefly discussed.

Residents were given the opportunity to address their concerns individually at the end of the evening.

Funds of $850,000 from the State Government Community Stimulus Program will be used for initial upgrade to Mazlin Park in Biggs Avenue. The State government has partnered with the Moreton Bay Regional Council to create a venue for celebrations, whilst retaining the importance of local heritage aspects and usability of the local area. Maximising the potential of micro businesses in the area was also a key factor. The initial stage of groundworks, landscaping and some shade and BBQ facilities are included, with the second stage of viewing and canoe launching platforms suggested for future stages.

Ms King admitted that the proposed Mobile Police Beat would not be forthcoming in the near future, with funds not available until the following year’s Budget.

Once it is available, the unit would be shared between Beachmere and Bribie Island. Ms King urged all residents to report any hooning or rogue driving behaviour to the Hoon Hotline and let her office know. She said statistics are essential to prove the case that more police patrols are needed in the area.

AUSTRALIA: Burdened with arrogant, selfserving systems of government almost totally unsuitable to the current political demands of a modern nationstate.

The Commonwealth of Australia is a sovereign nation comprised of several sovereign States and some Territories. All these entities joined together, voluntarily, in 1901, to become the nation of Australia.

In general terms this event was called an Act of Federation; it worked quite well for us for a very long time. It saw us through two World Wars and a depression that ripped the heart out of the country, leaving indelible and lasting impressions upon those Australians who had to endure the degrading hopelessness. But that system of Government worked for us and we were admired by a host of other nations as a “lucky country”.

Joined together by a far-sighted Constitution, the fundamentals of the arrangement were designed to be simple. The Commonwealth Government would have carriage of Taxation, Customs, Defence, Foreign Relations (Cranky Lizard uses that term due to the likelihood of causing angst to some poor bugger who has never had a foreign affair) and Transport, which embraced the fledgling aviation industry, together with other matters relating to mineral rights, currency issue and maintenance. The States would carry the responsibility for Law Enforcement and Justice, Education, Health, State Infrastructure, Business and Economic Development, various licensing functions and the operation and maintenance of their State legislatures.

And, as previously mentioned, it all worked pretty well. Until the Fourth Horseman arrived on the Pale Horse – bringing Pestilence in the form of COVID-19.

From that moment the general and common order in Australia began to unravel as the opportunistic, mean spirited, arrogant, self-serving coteries of State Governments discovered ways of tearing the authority of the Commonwealth apart.

We all know and have experienced, in some form or another, the ways in which various State Governments have interfered in our lives.

Much has been said and written about that. Cranky Lizard does not intend to pursue the subject of health advice-inspired “lockdowns” in much detail, except to comment that, apart from a few examples, the mainstream media, again, has demonstrated its shallow intellectual base and its slavish worship of the trivial, herd-like muttering of the leftwing nonsense coming from the various socialist State Governments.

Regular Comment

Very few question the consequences of the bizarre human auctions taking place – as unpredictable, devastating lockdowns and border closures provide press conference stages for strutting, smugly-arrogant and wildly-staring politicians who promise nothing and openly display their contempt for the citizens who elected them.

As they posture, strut and rant about threats to the community, the real pain extracts its uncompromising toll.

Elective surgery is stopped or delayed – thus rendering treatable conditions terminal; formal schooling is stopped and another generation of drones is cultivated, literature, science and mathematics disciplines are sacrificed on the altar of political expediency and point-scoring.

Do we just have to accept this? Cranky Lizard does not accept any of it.

Cranky Lizard does not accept the wildly-staring press conferences of Daniel Andrews or the reflected authority of the Queensland press conferences, where the next State Governor usurps the role of the smug-looking Premier. Cranky Lizard does not accept the arrogant posturing of the Western Australian Premier, adorned with a massive electoral majority that leaks hubris all over him. He has forgotten that ‘hubris‘ has a sister who follows her about quite closely; her name is ‘nemesis’.

And she will come to McGowan – she will come!

Cranky Lizard does not accept the vacuous dithering of other State Governments as they flop about like headless chooks.

State parochialism is the order of the day; it is clear to any objective observer that many people now see themselves as citizens of states, Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales et al, rather than Australians.

AND THIS IS WRONG – WE ARE AUSTRALIANS! Cranky Lizard openly acknowledges that, until the recent developments, the NSW Government of Gladys Berejiklian had tried to apply solutions that had an element of humanity about them.

Cranky Lizard accepts that Governments must lead and, in so doing, take actions that will probably affect peoples’ lives.

The Commonwealth has powers, during times of clear threats to National Security and during times of war – witness World War II and the proximity of enemy forces on our coastlines and in the lands to our immediate north, which it can use to superimpose upon the sovereignty of the states for the national common purpose.

But,

in times of health emergencies and matters of public order, the Commonwealth has no authority unless, or until, matters degenerate to such an extent that National security is threatened.

Some credible commentators suggest, considering the constant disruption to education, commerce and community intercourse, that National security is being threatened and that the application of Commonwealth powers should be considered.

Cranky Lizard can see no credible argument for this … yet!

What he can see is a need to examine the structure of government authority in Australia.

In a democracy, all elected governments have authority over their citizens by their consent.

Recent events have indicated that elected state governments no longer consider the need for a common cause and government-to-government discussion necessary – the establishment and operation of a National Cabinet, for the right reasons, has been twisted by egotistical Premiers to suit their narrow agendas, which are, simply to extend their time in Government by whatever means!

Police Services in all states have become instruments of enforcement and curtailment of personal freedoms by legislation; some, inevitably, have overreacted.

The examples are obvious and need no detailed explanations, but the image of a handcuffed, pyjama-clad, pregnant woman, regardless of whether you like her or not, remains a clear example of overreaction by the Police.

To be clear, the Police have been asked to carry out onerous and superfluous duties in these matters, and, in almost all cases that Police have acted professionally and credibly.

Community respect and gratitude are due to them; Cranky Lizard extends that to them in these words, “Thank You”.

But all that does not address the principal issue here, which is the application of government authority and States’ Rights vis-a-vis the Right of the Commonwealth to govern in the national interest.

The scope of this matter is nation-changing, enormous in its ramifications, and space available plus expertise does not allow the matter to be fully persecuted in this column.

Dedicated online and phone support service launched for people with disability Australians with disability will be encouraged to interact with a new dedicated onestop shop providing advice and up-to-date information under a recently-launched national service Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston said the National Disability Gateway consists of an accessible website and a 1800 phone line staffed by people with lived experience in supporting Australians with disability.

“The disability community is very diverse and finding information about policies, programs and support available for individuals can be a challenge,” Minister Ruston said.

“The Disability Gateway is fast, easy to use and offers a range of accessible features for people with disability including an Easy Read toggle on every page.”

Minister Ruston said the name of the national campaign is ‘I can’ and would consist of television, radio, print, digital and social media advertisements.

“The campaign features people with lived experience of disability describing the benefits of using the new service,” Minister Ruston said.

“We worked extensively with people with disability and the disability sector to build a fit-for-purpose source of information and hope it will help all Australian communities to easily access advice and referral services.”

The Disability Gateway is able to assist with a range of support, from locating advocacy services, finding a sporting team that meets the needs of a person’s disability or identifying local disability-related events.

It is available at www.disabilitygateway. gov.au, or by calling 1800 643 787 Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm AEST. People with disability who need support in another language can also contact the Gateway on 1800 643 787 and ask for an interpreter.

But a start could be that utilising a National Referendum, the Commonwealth could be given constitutional powers to override state laws in matters of great national concern regarding general community health in times of declared pandemics.

And you can start the conversation by referring these matters to your State Senators, there are twelve of them in each State and a couple in each Territory.

Fire them up! Get them started. Do you want to sit on your bum on your lounge and wait for some bright, shiny politician to tell you when you can go and shop for lamb chops or do you want to take control of your life and make your own responsible decisions?

Feral Pigs Invade Our National Park

Beachmere Conservation Park: Hidden Beauty Rainbow Bee-eater in flight

Beachmere Conservation Park Mangroves Beachmere Conservation Park, also known as the H E Corbould Park, after Harold Edward Corbould, is a relaxing destination for nature lovers. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, you’ll find it here as vehicles, motorbikes, and trail bikes are not permitted.

The park pays tribute to Corbould, who donated the parklands to the state government back in 1980. He was an artist as well as a philanthropist and pastoralist who lived in Bunya from 1966 up to 1989 when he passed away. He was able to amass a significant amount of land holdings during his lifetime, and out of all of them, he donated 20 for conservation purposes to the Queensland Government.

It remains to this day the most significant contribution by any individual to southeast Queensland. Aside from that, he also donated money to charitable organizations and the Salvation Army.

By December 1994, what was until then known as the H E Corbould Park was gazetted into Beachmere Conservation Park, and today Moreton Bay Regional Council is the park’s trustee. Today it protects five regional ecosystems, while its eastern side is home to a Habitat Protection Zone. Almost a thousand species of flora and fauna thrive thanks to conservation efforts.

Visitors to Beachmere Conservation Park are encouraged to explore the area while preserving its natural conditions. Paved walking tracks are a good way to explore the park without getting lost.

It’s also a beautiful place to visit during low tide, with a sandy track to guide you out to the beach. It has been said that at low tide, hundreds of soldier crabs can be seen scuttling about.

So next time you want to explore Beachmere don’t forget to drop in to this beautiful conservation area.

The view on the balcony at the Woorim Surf Club is spectacular in normal times, with the ocean and Moreton Island across the bay with its shipping and boating, dolphins and the odd whale to keep you fascinated while having a coldie.

Lately though, the club has played host to random wildlife such as wallabies and recently three Rainbow bee-eaters nesting in the dune directly in front of the club and sitting on the fence to the beach.

Rainbow bee-eaters are brilliantly coloured birds that grow to be 23–28cm in length, including the elongated tail feathers. The upper back and wings are green in colour, and the lower back and under-tail coverts are bright blue. The undersides of the wings and primary flight feathers are rufous to copper with green edges and tipped with black, and the tail is black to deep violet.

Rainbow bee-eaters are a common species and can be found during the summer in forested areas in most of southern Australia, excluding Tasmania. They migrate north during the winter into northern Australia, including here at Bribie Island.

Rainbow bee-eaters are ground nesting birds, like all bee-eaters. They are believed to mate for life. The male will bring the female insects while she digs the burrow that will be their nest.

The bee-eater digs its burrow by balancing on its wings and feet, and digs with its bill, then pushing loose soil backwards with its feet while balancing on its bill. The female bee-eater can dig about three inches down every day.

The nest tunnel is very narrow, and the birds’ bodies press so tightly against the tunnel walls that when the birds enter and exit their movement acts like a piston, pumping in fresh air and pushing out stale air. Rainbow bee-eaters have also been known to share their nest tunnels with other bee-eaters and sometimes even other species of birds.

The female lays between three and seven rounded, translucent white eggs, measuring 24 x 18mm, which are incubated for about 21 to 24 days until hatching. The young bee-eaters fledge after 28 to 31 days and are fed by both parents, as well as by any other members of the communal group.

So next time you drop in for lunch or a drink, impress your guests with your knowledge of the Rainbow Bee-eater and keep an eye out for them as the answer to a local clue in our upcoming Bribie Crosswords in the puzzle section of the paper.

On a recent drive along Bribie Island’s inland 4WD track through our State Forest and National Park I spotted many more kangaroos and wallabies than usual this month following good rains. Their numbers have increased significantly since the devastation of their population in the 2019 fires.

Kangaroos are now routinely seen on Ocean Beach, which hasn’t been the case

• Significantly affect marine turtle populations by eating eggs.

• Can carry diseases that affect native animals.

Feral pigs will eat many things including small mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs, crayfish, eggs, earthworms and other invertebrates, and all parts of plants

Welcome – a roo on Ocean Beach for several years and they make a welcome return for visitors.

Unfortunately, they are not the only species who have prospered, as I spotted a black feral pig with a litter of six midway along the track, followed by a spotted pig and her litter of three two kilometres further along. If this is how many I can see along the path imagine how many are deep in the forest.

Pigs were brought from Europe to Australia by the First Fleet in 1788.

Imported as livestock, pigs soon escaped and established wild populations that have expanded over time.

Today, it is estimated that Australia has up to 24 million feral pigs. They are among Queensland's most widespread and damaging pest animals. Feral pigs spread weeds, degrade soil and water, prey on native species, damage crops and livestock, and carry diseases. They are a restricted invasive animal under the Biosecurity Act 2014, and must not be moved, fed, given away, sold, or released into the environment without a permit.

The Act requires everyone to take all reasonable and practical steps to minimise the risks associated with invasive plants and animals under their control. This is called a “general biosecurity obligation”.

At a local level, each local government must have a biosecurity plan that covers invasive plants and animals in its area.

This plan may include actions to be taken on certain species. Some of these actions may be required under local laws.

Unwelcome – a feral pig in our National Park This pest in our National Park poses a great threat to our wildlife and I would encourage our Rangers to look into trapping, shooting or poisoning these pigs in the park if it can be done safely.

WAGE FINALISING No wonder we are called bean counters, there are so many areas we need to balance before finalising any processes.

Unfortunately, some of this has been passed to business owners with payroll.

Before you finalise your employee PAYG Summary Statements with the ATO, make sure that the figures in the software annual wages equals the ATO information for each employee, and then make sure that these both agree with the BAS as lodged for the year. If there are any discrepancies, you will have to sort them out first. If you have made an error in the online wages, then the only recourse is to ring the ATO and request them to amend for you.

TAXABLE PAYMENTS ANNUAL REPORT The other document (if applicable) that you must send to the ATO is the Annual Payment Annual Report for workers in the building and construction industry, cleaning services, courier or road freight services, IT services and security, investigation, or surveillance service. The information includes not only your details, but also the contractors ABN, name, address, telephone number, gross payments and any GST charged. Have all the necessary information to hand before you complete the document online.

STOCKTAKE Whether you have livestock or dead stock??, you should do a stocktake as of 30 June. This ensures that the correct Cost of Goods Sold is used in your Trading

Profit and Loss Account. It also brings in the cost of sale against the Income in the same year. Ignore any obsolete stock.

Businesses with less than $5000 trading stock on hand do not have to do a physical stocktake but can leave the same figure for stock on hand each year. If you are calculating your stocktake later than 30 June, then remove any deliveries received after 30 June from your stock on hand, add back the cost of any sales made since 30 June, and co-ordinate final deliveries with invoices so they reflect cost and stock on hand in the same year.

GETTING BACK UP

My Nana told me “It’s easy to fall into the gutter, climbing back out is the hard part”.

Since I was only about 13 at the time, I was concerned as to why my Nana would be spending so much time on street corners near gutters. But then I realised that Nana had 13 kids, so she wouldn’t have had time to hang about on street corners, so it must have been “Wise Nana Advice” and I should pay attention to it.

Over the years, when I could easily have slid down a slope to the bottom of a gutter, my Nana’s words would echo in my head at just the right time and I was able to stop the slide in time to grab the edge and scramble back up before it was too late.

These days, with all the changes that have been impacting everyone’s life, there have been a lot of reasons to just give up on trying to maintain your “normal” lifestyle, especially when it seems so much easier to slide downwards rather than constantly fight to stay balanced on the edge. Lockdowns and uncertainty seem to encourage binge eating and drinking, especially with the impact on finances and increased worry about the future.

The problem is that once you start the slide into bad habits, stopping them is difficult and gutters can appear a fun place to be – they may even be filled with lots of friends and relatives. But eventually, one day, you will look up and realise that your life could be so much better if you could just find a way to climb out, although sometimes it’s hard to see how.

Like Your Own Space?

Before you start go and grab a small towel!

Have a stable, high-backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support.

Please wear flat-bottomed shoes, or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them, or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises; remember that you are asking your body to do something new.

You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That’s ok!

Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something by yourself that you are nervous about.

If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only complete as many times as you are comfortable with.

If possible, make sure someone is with you for support. Remember, exercising does become easier if it is done regularly, and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat-bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

That’s when you must discover your real strength. I’m not talking about lifting huge weights, or running marathons, this is the strength to believe that you can take that one small step forward, especially when everyone around you is telling you they don’t want you to change.

Changing your life and getting out of your gutter isn’t going to be easy, but if you stop looking at what you can’t do and start seeing what you can do, then the view from the bottom of your gutter will change in an instant.

So many people tell me all the things they can’t do and then are surprised by what they can do. Clients who “have terrible balance” discover they just needed to use their balance a bit more and it improved rapidly. “Weak upper body really is a female thing,” I am told.

That’s until they realise that they just pulled 27kgs backwards, easily, 15 times in a row!

If I had concentrated on everything I couldn’t do when I started going to a gym then I would still be 90kg and miserable; actually by now I’d probably be back at 120kg or more. I couldn’t walk further than 500m, and I couldn’t lift more than 2kg. I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t wear the clothes I wanted to, I was so embarrassed by myself that I couldn’t talk to people, and most of all I couldn’t be happy – even with the “help” of alcohol, chocolate and pizza.

By taking that one small step into a gym, and towards the top of my gutter, my whole life changed. At the start if you had told me I would compete in bodybuilding competitions, have my

Standing tall, with your shoulders back, stretch the towel horizontally with your hands grabbing both ends and hold the towel close to your chest. Step forward with your right leg and bend at the knee.

Straighten the other leg.

TOWEL TWIRLS

Stand in a place where you have plenty of room around you.

Hold one end of the small towel with your right hand and, keeping your arm straight, make circular movements as fast as you comfortably can with your right arm, twirling the towel clockwise Repeat with your left hand.

Then taking the towel in your right hand again twirl the towel counter-clockwise.

Repeat with your left hand.

Only do as many as is comfortable for you up to 10 times with each arm.

Rest.

TOWEL TOE TAPS

If you feel unstable when standing on one foot, please stand next to the kitchen bench or a stable chair for support if needed.

Stand tall with your shoulders back and your feet shoulder-width apart.

Hold the towel with both hands and stretch your arms straight in front at shoulder height. Holding the upper corners of the towel, lift your right foot to touch the lower part of the towel or as close to the corner as you can comfortably reach. Return to starting position and repeat with your left foot.

Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg.

Rest.

TOWEL CURLS

Sitting or standing.

Take two towels and fold each of them to form a bundle that is easily held – one for each hand.

Start with hands beside your legs, with your fingernails against your legs.

Bring your hand up towards your shoulder.

Keep your elbow close to your body and your upper arm still.

Repeat as many times as you feel comfortable doing up to 15 ‘curls’ with each hand.

Rest.

Throughout my climb I found people who made my climb easier. I used experts in what I needed for my climb, Personal Trainers and Toastmasters, and the relatives that encouraged me, even when my changes made them uncomfortable.

Even with all this help, at the end of the day it was up to me to make the changes. We try and explain to our clients that we are there to help them reach their goals but in the end only they can do it.

When our clients reach their goals and thank us, I always tell them that all I did was count on my fingers the amount of exercises they did, they’re the ones who reached their goals through hard work and staying focused when they weren’t with us.

So if you are sitting in your own gutter right now reading this paper, have a look around and think about how much your view of your world could change if you called us to help you start a climb towards a stronger and happier you.

After all, my Nana didn’t say you couldn’t get out, just that you would need to climb.

A new vaccination hub open six days a week at Caboolture Square Shopping Centre is making it much easier for the Moreton Bay community to be protected against COVID-19.

Vaccinations are strictly by appointment only at this stage - walk-ins will not be accepted. Bookings can be made through the Queensland Health website, https:// www.vaccinebookings.health.qld.gov.au/ registerforvaccination Caboolture Hospital Executive Director Angie Dobbrick said Caboolture Hospital had leased a large area in Caboolture Square Shopping Centre to deliver up to 400 COVID-19 vaccinations per day, potentially growing further as more supply from Pfizer becomes available.

“The shopping centre is very central in the Caboolture CBD with three levels of free parking and easily accessible on public transport.

“It also has a large Coles supermarket, specialty stores and a food court, which means people can do their grocery shopping afterwards or grab a jab and a kebab in the one visit.”

What’s Happening at Bribie Respite & Support Services July 2021 NDIS Services NDIS School Holiday Program Bribie Respite and Support Service are proud to announce the commencement of a school holiday program which is suitable for 14yrs to 18yrs with a disability or developmental delay.

Our School Holiday Program is extremely awesome with 6 hours of supervised fun - Monday to Friday - 9am pick up to 3pm drop off using our transport or your own transport.

“Megan’s” Special Noodles, Chicken Enchilada Casserole, Buddha Bowls, Keto Bread with ham & salad, Baked Tortilla Stack, Chicken Fried Rice, Pasta Alfedo, San Choy Bow & Chicken Tacos.

The food is supplied free of charge.

Everyone sits together an enjoys each meal at lunchtime.

Unfortunately, someone gets stuck doing the dishes & cleaning up, but the support staff “chip in” & help, teaching a few household skills along the way.

Each week we are supporting our clients either individually or in small groups to attend water aerobics, walking netball, music bingo, therapies, health appointments and shopping, along with support at home.

The ADF: After Afghanistan, where to now?

As we did in Vietnam so we have done in Afghanistan. When the Americans are sick of it and decide to get out of the kitchen because it has become too hot…so do we!

• What is its purpose now?

• What weapons and combat systems do we need?

• Where are we going to get them from?

• How are we going to use them?

• Who or what constitutes a major strategic threat to our nation?

• With what weapons systems do we challenge or neutralize our perceived threats?

I’m of the opinion that there is a fundamental problem in our defence procurement system.

We have sheds full of attack helicopters that cannot fly – they came from Europe and are called Tigers. Well, this breed can fly but they can’t fight!

We have submarines – coming – as soon as the French figure out a way to design them and we figure out a way to make them in South Australia. They should be available in 2035, or thereabouts. That should keep any potential aggressor on their toes, they’ve only got 14 years before our new subs hit the seas!

There will be those reading these words who will remember the “Carl Gustav” anti-tank weapon purchase for the Australian Army.

As an ex-serviceman I can tell you that it was a bloody good weapon, and would have been brilliant at “bunker-busting” during the Vietnam War. But Australian soldiers could not use the Carl Gustav during the Vietnam War, because the manufacturer, Sweden, would not allow the Australian Government to deploy the weapon!

Why would you buy a weapon for your Army and then have another country tell you when you can or cannot use it?

Probably only in Australia – and only with Australia’s weapon procurement system.

More Public Service BS? Absolutely!

So it is still happening. Why? Why is it that this country, which has some reputation for producing serious combat soldiers, is burdened with such a dull weapons procurement system?

Politics. That’s why. Simple as that.

Politics.

The current and future strategic environment for Australia, in terms of relations with other nations, our commercial and defence capacity to manage threats to our ability to maintain sea lanes in our region, is a serious, constantly shifting and demanding business.

Our Prime Minister has stated that we face times as difficult as those we faced just before World War II. All of us should note that.

We have combat battlefield transport aircraft called Spartan which does not seem to be fit for operational duties.

Not for one moment would I suggest that Australia should be turned into an armed camp. No sir! That is not a sensible option.

We have a battlefield communications and control system that seems to be compromised.

But, as we re-assess our strategic goals we become involved in a process that should also examine our national goals, one of which, I suggest, could be, should be, maybe must be, a form of National Service. The Singapore model is a good example.

As a responsible citizen I’m not in the business of running scare campaigns or making seditious comments about our nation’s defence capabilities. All of the above information has been available in the public forum for some time – so, “Nothing to see here folks!”

But the question can surely be asked: What is going on?

Answer?

“We know how hard the live music sector has been hit due to Covid-19, so live music venues will now be able to apply to the next round of Live Music Support program funding, following the government’s additional commitment of $7 million in the 2021-22 State Budget to help sustain the sector,” Minister Enoch said.

We expect our Navy, Army and Air Force to do that; it is their role in our Nation’s destiny.

So, after Afghanistan, Australia needs to have a hard and merciless stare at what we are doing with our defence machine:

Minister for the Arts, Leeanne Enoch, said this funding opportunity builds on the state government’s earlier grant programs supporting local live music venues as they continue to recover from the impacts of Covid-19.

Australia and Australia’s magnificent fighting men and women have no control over these events; they just have to go with the flow. Come back to Australian bases, pick up the pieces and prepare for the next adventure or the next threatening and strategic environment.

And they, the Navy, Army and Air Force, in turn, have every right to expect that Australia will give them the weapons they need to defend our Nation and place us in the right strategic position.

Australia is not faced with an imminent threat of tens of thousands of small boats full of enemy soldiers paddling their mad way to Australia’s shore. We are not.

But we have, whether we like it or not, a large, implacable foe in the form of the Communist Party of the People’s Republic of China. They are an immensely powerful force of an unpredictable nature; they

seek global recognition and we, Australia, have to deal with that.

We have alliances, relationships and treaties which enhance our arms; we can punch above our weight and we do!

Alliances, treaties, relationships only last as long as all parties want them to; that is, while the participants’ strategic goals are similar or parallel.

In the end run, this citizen reckons that Australia will have to stand alone if needs be; we must be able to extract severe consequences from any aggressor against our nation without depending upon another nation’s treasure or blood.

If our current defence weapons procurement system is any guide, that could be a slight problem. Not much point in throwing boomerangs against incoming missiles from the Asian continent!

I also feel it’s worth waxing vocal about the development of our ability to make our own weapons; the Prime Minister has indicated, and he had bipartisan support in these matters, that resources and funds have been allocated to this important project.

Well, we shall see, won’t we?

Words, such as these of mine, written in a local newspaper, as good as it is, will not change the megalithic national public service mindset towards weapons procurement. We, however, all need to keep in mind the idea that mice dream dreams that would terrify tom cats and in that context the noise we make to our Senators and MPs will reach a point when they will listen.

“The Live Music Support Program is an extension of support offered to live music venues in 2020-21 and will help offset operational costs for eligible venues, as well as programming and artist fees.

“With this new investment the dedicated two-year Arts and Cultural Recovery Package, announced last year to sustain the sector during these uncertain times, will now deliver almost $30 million in critical support across Queensland’s arts and cultural sector.”

The live music industry was one of the hardest hit by the impacts of Covid-19, challenging the viability of live music venues and the important role they play in creating jobs and opportunities for new talent, musicians, technicians and other creatives.

“Queensland’s contemporary music industry relies on the live music economy for its survival and sustainability, with Brisbane’s music industry alone worth an estimated $428 million to the Queensland economy,” Ms Enoch said.

Kris Stewart, CEO, QMusic said, “The previous 15 months have been absolutely devastating for the live music industry - from our venues functioning with severely reduced capacities to our local musicians seeing considerably less work than pre-Covid.

“We congratulate the state government for making this immediate funding injection into the sustainability of the live music sector, and we look forward to working with them on getting the money to where it’s most needed,” he said.

This nation currently has strong and effective leadership in defence matters at a political level that, in turn, will translate into a change at the level where it counts; in the defence weapons procurement system.

We do not need to worry about our sailors’, soldiers’ and airmen and airwomen’s capacity to use the weapons we give them.

They have been and are bloody magnificent at doing that – we just need to ensure that we give them the right stuff!

Bribie Island Containers for Change Did you know you can pick up some handy cash while helping protect the environment?

Bribie Island has its own Containers for Change Depot at 21 Armitage St. Bongaree. The facility accepts most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and paperboard drink containers displaying a refund notice, such as “10c refund at collection depots in participating States or Territories”.

Containers excluded from the scheme include milk containers and wine and spirit bottles as well as fruit juice and cordial containers over 1 litre.

The Bribie depot allows your containers to be counted on the spot by an automated machine or by the staff. It also offers a convenient in-house bag drop service where customers can drop and go.

CONSUMER SERVICE It is easy to use, just follow these steps: 1. Press the green button to begin then place your glass containers on the left conveyor belt and all other containers on the right conveyor until they are all counted by the recycling machine; 2. Press the red button and take your ticket that the machine spits out to the Cashier auto teller and scan the ticket by placing it on the space provided. The machine then dispenses your cash.

If you sign up for a Scheme ID you are asked for your bank details so you can receive your refund by EFT, or alternatively you can just receive cash without signing up. Identification is only required if you are returning more than 825 containers at once.

You can also donate your refund to a community group by quoting the group’s scheme ID number, this number is available on the Containers for Change website at www.containersforchange. com.au .

Fauna crossing under construction on First Avenue Moreton Bay Regional Council is calling on the community to share their local knowledge to help keep kangaroos and wallabies safe on Bribie Island roads.

With wildlife-vehicle collisions involving macropods doubling in recent years on the island, Mayor Peter Flannery said further action had to be taken. As a result, new fauna rope bridges have been built to give native wildlife safer access between Bribie’s parks, reserves and corridors around First Avenue between Bongaree and Woorim.

“Council is looking to install additional green infrastructure at locations where we continue to see high wildlife-vehicle collisions,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Over the past 10 years, Council has received more than 300 community requests for the removal of deceased animals located on, or adjacent to, roads on Bribie Island.

“Sadly, more than two thirds of these collisions are relating to kangaroos and wallabies, with figures doubling from 24 collisions in 2018 to 54 collisions in 2019.

“We want to know if you have encountered a kangaroo or wallaby while driving on Bribie Island to add to our understanding of their movements and behaviour.

“But there is only so much we can do; we need drivers to slow down around wildlife areas and stay alert, especially as we see more kangaroos moving at dawn and dusk over winter.”

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said feedback received will help identify priority locations where infrastructure is needed. More information on council’s initiative and a feedback link is available on the website, www.yoursay.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/kangaroos-wallabies-bribie-island .

“There is a range of green infrastructure that will be considered, from warning signs and road stencils to increased driver awareness, to fences, underpasses and rope bridges to discourage animals from crossing the road,” Cr Savige said.

“We would love the community’s help in identifying the best locations to install these safety measures, especially around well-known collision hotspots like White Patch Esplanade, Sunderland Drive and First Avenue.

“In fact, we are currently constructing two fauna crossings to create a safer passage for smaller wildlife over First Avenue and installing 400m of exclusion fencing, however it’s clear that more needs to be done”.

Fauna bridges allow native wildlife to move as they would from tree to tree to access nearby local ecosystems without having to dangerously scurry along the road. Unlike koalas that travel along the ground, animals like possums, sugar gliders and goannas prefer to travel along canopies. This corridor provides refuge, dispersal and breeding habitat for gliders, echidnas, wallabies and many others.

This is a great initia tive by council, well done to all concerned.

Mobile phone and seatbelt detection cameras are now operational across Queensland in a bid to deter unsafe driving and save lives. From 1 November any driver caught by the cameras can expect to receive a $1033 fine and the loss of four demerit points. Besides being able to catch drivers using their phones behind the wheel, the cameras will also detect drivers and their front seat passengers not wearing their seatbelts.

A three-month grace period applies until 31 October this year, during which drivers caught on camera using their phone would be notified they had been caught, but not fined.

With the number of lives lost on Queensland roads continuing to cause concern among authorities, the new cameras are a key part of the State Government’s record $1.69 billion road safety plan.

“Some of the cameras will be mobile, and we won’t be telling people where they are either. Drivers should expect to be caught anywhere, anytime, whether they’re driving in the city or on a regional highway,” said Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, adding that distracted driving was a silent killer on the state’s roads.

“Our message has always been direct and very simple: just put your phone away. Using a mobile phone while driving has the same impact as getting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol reading between 0.07 and 0.10," Mr Bailey said. He acknowledged the penalties were tough, but said they were necessary to stamp out driver distraction.

“So far in 2021, 136 people have died on Queensland roads – 12 more than at the same time last year,” he said.

RACQ spokesperson Renee Smith said the Club welcomed the measures.

“We know on average around 29 people are killed and more than a thousand others are seriously injured every year on Queensland roads as a result of crashes where driver distraction played a part,” Ms Smith said.

“Sadly, we’re still seeing drivers refusing to wear a seatbelt - a risk that can’t afford to be taken, as it’s often the difference between life and death in a crash.

“Given the shocking number of people killed on our roads so far this year, we hope these new measures will help deter unsafe driving and save lives.”

Distracted driving is not the only deadly driving behaviour set to be targeted this year, starting from September with the most substantial reforms to drink driving since random breath testing was introduced.

It’s Showtime!

Amelia Strazdins Normality is slowly beginning to return to the world. With lockdowns remaining firmly integrated within our day-to-day lives, many organisations and businesses have still been hard at work to ensure that events can continue as planned without causing additional impacts.

For many of us, a highlight of this year has been the long-anticipated return of festivals, concerts and shows, and, of course, the Ekka, which has long remained one of the high spots of the year for farmers, children, and everyone in between. Last year due to restrictions, the event was unable to be held. This year, it’s back and better than ever.

The show lasts for 10 days and offers a look into what Queensland has to offer whilst providing entertainment for all ages. Many of us see the Ekka as an opportunity for a fun family day out, but for many businesses – particularly those within farming, the food industry and entertainment – the show provides the opportunity to sell and promote Queensland’s best products and produce.

Across our state, and the country, many people have suffered over the past 18 months due to a loss of business and unsteady income. This economic hardship continues to place a strain on many families.

Annual shows like the Ekka provide a multitude of jobs and opportunities

that are desperately needed by many as COVID continues to take its toll.

Queensland has been extremely lucky in relation to minimal outbreaks and our Ekka remains one of the first bigger events to be held since the beginning of the pandemic. In supporting the iconic event so many of us have missed, we’re also helping Queensland local and the wider Australian industry to begin economic recovery.

This year the Ekka runs from August 6 to 15, with the public Show Holiday date differing slightly for various regions. The ‘reopening’ of the show also reminds us how lucky we are to experience such events, with parts of the world and our own country still facing lockdowns and uncertainty.

With accessible transport options such as trains and the promise of a fun, foodfilled day there remain few reasons not to experience the freedom and excitement of the Ekka. After the disappointment of last year with many organisers, entertainers, and attendees unable to showcase their produce, products and services to Queenslanders, there is no doubt high hopes surround this year’s show.

Catering for young and old, from foodies to adrenaline junkies, musicians to firework fanatics and with showbags, rides and so many different foods on sticks, it seems the Ekka is set to make a triumphant return.

New Projects Fund Aids Community Sport Recovery Queensland’s grassroots sport and active recreation clubs are set to benefit from a new $9 million Active Gameday Projects fund to help them develop or upgrade playing fields as part of the state government’s Covid-19 Economic Recovery Plan Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the fund would help the economic recovery of the sport and recreation industry by investing in smaller scale infrastructure that benefits local communities.

“We know sport and active recreation clubs have been doing it tough during the pandemic,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“The Active Gameday Projects fund will help them get back on their feet, freshen up their facilities for existing members, and encourage new sign ups.

“We’re able to get out on the field because of the hard work of Queenslanders in managing the health impacts of the pandemic.

“Funding of up to $150,000 will be available for eligible organisations and projects who are able chip in 20 per cent of their project’s cost.”

The program is for fit-for-purpose works on playing spaces that meet grassroots level playing requirements and that encourage greater community participation.

Examples of projects that could receive funding include developing or upgrading playing surfaces and installing or upgrading irrigation and field lighting.

Minister Hinchliffe said the initiative hoped to get more Queenslanders involved in sport and physical activity.

“The pandemic has been tough on our communities and now more than ever we need to support our clubs to do what they do best,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“We’re also encouraging clubs to use local contractors and suppliers where possible so the funding benefits local jobs and communities.”

Queensland local governments are also eligible for funding.

Active Gameday Projects is a new initiative of the state government’s Activate!

Queensland strategy with the first funding round opening in September.

REIQ welcomes State Budget spending on housing and infrastructure but calls for more

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland has welcomed increased social housing and infrastructure spending in the 2021-22 Queensland Budget but has given a thumbs-down to a lack of government progress on reforms to the First Home Owners’ Grant and Stamp Duty.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella welcomed the announcement of a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund to drive new housing supply and $1.8 billion over four years to increase social housing supply and to upgrade the existing social housing portfolio.

“We welcome what is believed to the be the largest investment in social housing since World War II,” Ms Mercorella said. “The REIQ has been a strong advocate of more government investment in safe, secure and affordable housing, which is the foundation of building resilient and connected communities.

“The government has to do the heavy lifting in providing affordable housing for our most vulnerable. We welcome the large investment in putting roofs over people’s heads and the jobs that will be created during construction of this much-needed accommodation.”

The REIQ also welcomed the boost to infrastructure spending, with the government allocating $14.7 billion in 2021-22, with 61.2 per cent of funds to be spent outside Greater Brisbane.

“With Queensland’s population increasing, it’s great to see such a large amount being spent on roads, public facilities, local government projects including sewerage and water plus disaster resilience,” Ms Mercorella said.

“We’re delighted to see Queensland’s

regions receive the lion’s share of this spending, particularly in light of the influx of new residents they are experiencing.”

However, Ms Mercorella said she was disappointed the government had failed to act on two key reforms the REIQ had been advocating for – changes to the First Home Owners’ Grant and the eventual abolition of stamp duty.

“We believe the $15,000 First Home Owners’ Grant should be extended to beyond those who are purchasing or building a new home,” she said.

“With the costs of new construction skyrocketing, giving first home buyers support to purchase existing housing (to the same current value of less than $750,000) will expose them to more affordable pricing options. The current grant significantly limits buying options and choice.”

Ms Mercorella said she was also disappointed the government had not acted on stamp duty reform as other jurisdictions have done. The REIQ has advocated a 10-year phase-out of this economically inefficient and volatile tax.

However, Ms Mercorella said the REIQ was broadly supportive of the budget’s direction in supporting Queensland’s COVID-19 economic recovery.

“The 2021-22 State Budget appears to be putting Queensland in a strong economic position compared to other states,” she said.

LOVED ONES WHO HAVE PASSED Tribute to Alf Porter

Daphne and Alf Porter Alf Porter is now at peace and joined again with his beloved wife Daphne (Daph).

Alfred (Alf) William Porter passed away in the Chermside hospital after a short illness on the 18th of June 2021, just 10 days after his 93rd birthday.

Alf, Daph and their three children, Diane, Donald, and Wendy, moved to Bribie Island in 1966 to manage the Co-Op store just metres away from the jetty. Although Alf’s trade was mainly as a Grocer over the decades, he worked in various positions including the Bribie Island retirement village as a gardener and maintenance person, Lacey’s grocery store and newsagents. He also supplied shop owners and locals with fresh fruit and vegetables. As keen lovers of indoor bowls, both Alf and Daph introduced this sport to the locals in the late 1960s. He also supported many charities throughout the years.

Alf will be sadly missed by many!

Hello Gardeners!

What an interesting Winter we’ve been having, with the wonderful amount of rain leaving gardeners and gardens smiling. Thought I would mix it up a bit this month with a little bit of fruit, a little bit of plant life and a little bit of tool care in your life.

Feed well in early Summer and when the ‘flowers’ are finished remove the whole stem down low, as each stem flowers only once. New shoots will appear regularly near the old stem and grow quickly in the warmer weather.

Some of the small and medium varieties are suited to growing in large pots.

Use a good potting mix and liquid feed once a month.

PRUNING Your garden will require occasional or regular pruning. More damage can be done to trees through well-intended but poorly-executed pruning than by any other activity. So here are a few simple rules to help pruning:

Young trees will cope with a bad prune more so than older trees. Older trees will stress if they are not pruned properly and this can cause death from disease and rotting.

We recently had Cyclamens in the store, although there are none available here at the moment. I thought I would give you some information on how to care for your beautiful treasure. This stunning beautifully coloured plant will lend itself to any home.

Blueberries

BLUEBERRIES Blueberries like a sunny position as too much shade will stop the plant flowering. They can be planted from containers at any time of the year.

They are lovely and delicious, take up very little space and can be grown in either the garden or a large pot.

If planting in a pot use Azalea and Camellia planting mix.

When harvesting the Blueberries leave them on the bush for a few days after they turn blue, as they will develop a better flavour. Then pick and enjoy.

HELICONIAS

Blueberries like acid soil, well-drained and a PH of about 5. The PH of sandy soils can be made better by adding Peat Moss. First check the PH of your soil. As the plants are shallow-rooted make sure to mulch with Peat, Lucerne or Sugar Cane, so as not to disturb the root system.

In Spring, feed with a Citrus and Fruit Tree fertilizer. About a man’s handful (50 grams) per plant for the first and second year and then reduce by half to 25 grams per plant for the following years. The young leaves will change colour from light green to a tinge of red. If the young leaves start to go yellow it is an iron deficiency, and usually means the PH is too high. This iron deficiency can be corrected in Spring by using Iron Chelate (at the rate on the packaging.)

They like the consistency, especially when the flower starts and when the fruit is picked. NEVER allow the Blueberries grown in pots to dry right out.

Very little pruning is required in the first three years. The plant will grow better if the flowers are removed in the first year of planting. In the fourth year pruning should be done in Spring.

PRUNING TIME Heliconians These have become extremely popular, and I have been purchasing quite a few for the nursery. What I love about Heliconias is their dramatic look.

Their flowers are not actually flowers, but modified leaves called bracts.

They will grow anywhere except in areas where the temperature goes below five degrees. They like a rich well-composted soil with protection from wind. They should be kept moist but not over-watered when young.

When pruning, don’t remove too much of the tree at one time Small cuts are preferred, as these exposed wounds may provide entry points for disease or decay in the tree. Spray over the cut with Steri-prune to prevent infection.

Don’t allow the plant to tear when cutting the branch. The under-cut method is a good way of stopping this from happening.

If you prune correctly, rapid recovery of the tree will be im-

ventilation and no draughts. At least two metres back from a window.

Keep the plant lightly moist without over-watering. Feed with Nitrosol or Flourish every 3 to 4 weeks. Remove the spent flower heads and yellowed leaves. Give the stems a twist and a sharp pull – do not cut the flowers off.

Like Fred Flintstone did with his cat – put the Cyclamens outside at night! Then bring them back inside first thing in the morning. Cyclamens are cold-blooded and do not tolerate heated homes for long periods of time.

The promising start we saw to winter with stable weather patterns didn’t last long and the windows of opportunity to get offshore this month have been few and far between. The whales are still around in large numbers, and it shouldn’t be long until we start seeing them swimming south instead of north and their numbers begin to dwindle as their annual migration draws to an end. Those who have jumped on the limited opportunities to get offshore this month have been well rewarded on fishing grounds that wouldn’t have seen a boat in weeks in some cases. Strong offshore currents have also brought a boost of life to our local systems.

The inshore reefs have been firing with a great run of snapper this season. The artificial reefs in particular have been producing some quality fish. GPS coordinates for the artificial reefs are easily obtained through the Queensland government’s department of Environment and Science website (https://www.des.qld.gov.au).

The artificial reefs provide great starting points when “sounding around” and looking for fish, as mentioned in previous months. Curtain Reef in particular, while holding many great fish, is an excellent starting point with the Bulwer ledge running to the north. This area is a well-known haunt for extra large Cobia as well, so it’s always worthwhile trying a large live bait fished at around mid-depth in case one of these big Black Kingfish is lurking nearby. Be ready though, if you do encounter one of these very powerful fish they will instantly swim straight for the bottom and try to bust you off on the first ledge, crevice or wreck they can find.

Caught pre-closure. so rigging a live bait in this manner will ensure good hook position to increase the chance of setting the hook while also causing minimal harm to the bait. I’ve often had a ‘livey’ swim around under the boat all day and not get eaten, only to be de-hooked at the end of the day and swim away as if nothing happened.

Don’t forget, it’s currently closed season for Snapper and Pearl Perch, so if caught while chasing other demersals they must be immediately returned to the water. The season will remain closed until 11:59pm on Sunday 15 August.

Bribie local, Jeni-lee Beattie, nailed this huge Spano while casting stickbaits at Flinder’s Reef. This was Jen’s first Spanish ever and first fish ever caught on a stickbait. Well done, Jen!

My favourite live baits are Tarwhine, which are often mistaken for Bream and are a common by-catch when chasing demersal species around areas such as this within the bay.

When using Tarwhine for bait you still need to ensure they’re of legal size, which is 25cm. I find anywhere from 25cm – 35cm will make great live baits for large Cobia with a single 8/0 – 10/0 hook pinned through the back just below the 3rd or 4th dorsal spine.

It’s peak time for Spanish Mackerel.

I’ve mentioned them a lot in the past few months and it’s all been building to this. This is your last chance for the year to get a big fat winter Spanish Mackerel before they vanish completely from our local reefs over Spring. The run of Spanish which will return in Summer are generally a smaller class of fish than the Winter run. They’re here in massive numbers, all around the 15kg – 20kg mark.

They’re in the pre-spawn period of their spawn cycle and are feeding very aggressively to fatten up before spawning. They can be found on any of the reefs running north of Cape Moreton, from Brennan’s Reef to Hutchison’s Shoal. My preferred method of targeting them is to start

Jen and Anthony Cass @pelagic_ hunter on the Bribie Island VMR pontoon after a successful morning. up-current of a reef about 200m or so, turn the motor off and start casting large timber stickbaits as I drift toward the structure with the current. The bait fish get caught in the turbulence and ‘eddies’ caused as the current hits the reef with the Mackerel patrolling the deeper water nearby. Dawn and dusk are the optimal times to target them, however, at the moment they’re readily biting right throughout the day.

These types of large timber lures can be hard to come by at your average tackle store as they’re more of a specialty item. I source mine online at https://castmag.co, a great local company with their “Fatboy” stickbait proving time and time again to be irresistible to a large Spanish Mackerel.

Brisbane, Australia will host the 2032 Olympics Australia will host the Olympics for the third time and Paralympics for the second time after Brisbane and South East Queensland tonight secured the 2032 Games.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said securing the Games was a coup for the nation.

“It’s a historic day not just for Brisbane and Queensland, but for the entire country,” the Prime Minister said.

“Only global cities can secure the Olympic Games – so this is fitting recognition for Brisbane’s standing across our region and the world.

“It also marks an important leap forward for Australia as we look toward major events that lock in economic growth and social benefits that will echo for years to come.“We know the impact on Sydney more than two decades ago was transformative. We can now expect a repeat for Brisbane and communities across Queensland. “It’s a proud day for Queenslanders and Australians everywhere.”

Minister Richard Colbeck said securing the biggest sporting event in the world offered a tantalising goal to any young Australian who dared to dream big.

“If you think of the young sports fans sitting at home today who aspire to be an Olympian – they now have something tangible to aim for – a chance to compete on home soil in just over a decade.

“It’s a huge opportunity. We saw it in 2000 when Cathy Freeman and so many others performed so brilliantly and inspired a new generation of sports stars.”

Minister Colbeck said the Morrison Government had backed the bid every step of the way and preparations for the event would now trigger considerable growth and investment.

“We will see Brisbane and Queensland deliver an Olympic and Paralympic Games which are affordable, beneficial and

sustainable for Queensland and Australia,” Minister Colbeck said.

“In the coming years investment in infrastructure will continue to ensure transport and venues are not just fit for the purpose of the Games but support future growth in the region and remain shining examples of Australia’s success in staging some of the most important global events.

“Hosting the 2032 Games sets us working towards a common purpose, from those in the heart of the action in Brisbane, to people across South East Queensland and beyond. “It will reinforce unity, health and wellbeing and celebrate Australia’s enduring love of sport.”

KPMG has estimated economic and social benefits at $8.1 billion for Queensland and $17.6 billion for Australia.

Ted O’Brien, who has served as the Prime Minister’s representative for the Queensland bid, said hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games will see “a decade-long runway paved in green and gold all the way to 2032”.

“Hosting the 2032 Olympics will not only inject billions into the economy, it will also create around 120,000 new jobs, including 90,000 jobs for Queenslanders,” Mr O’Brien said. “Local companies and businesses right across Queensland should take the opportunities which will come over the next decade to contribute to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“For Queenslanders, this is our moment and it’s now up to us to make the most of it.

The big question is “How do you fix the issues that stop us exercising more regularly or more consistently?” (especially in these darker, colder months).

There is one simple solution: ‘Train With a Buddy’. There have been numerous studies that show the benefits of training with a buddy, and they’ve all concluded that it’s a great way to keep up consistency and achieve goals faster.

Training with a buddy, be that a friend, partner or family member, will open a whole new world of possibilities for your consistency and motivation. So we’d like to share with you six key benefits of training with a buddy: 1. Get More from Your Workout – When you have your buddy to push you, and you them, then you will both benefit from that extra percent of effort and output. It may be because of the additional encouragement or maybe a competitive streak, but whatever works, this will see you getting those goals faster from that extra set, that extra 5kg, that extra km you both run!

2. Accountability – When there is a buddy who is counting on you to make that session on a cold night, or a time when your motivation is low, you are far less likely to pull out at the last minute. Locking in a time to train will also help, as opposed to a loose plan like “Let’s head to the gym over the weekend at some stage”. Lock it in, confirm it and don’t be late! The benefits to you and your buddy will be great!

3. Give it a Go or You Just Won’t Know!
