This month we’ve covered parts of the State Budget, in particular Health. I would have liked to have done a comprehensive article on what the budget means for Pumicestone residents.

However, once again, our State Member did not respond to any questions we put to her in relation to the budget – or any other matters of interest to our readers on which we have invited her response. It’s very difficult for any publication to present a balanced view of the policies and activities of our local politicians when one side refuses to communicate with us. But we’ll keep trying.

Also in this issue you will see our regular staff writer Mozza “out and about” gathering information on more great places for locals to visit.

Good to see the new Caboolture Watch House is now up and running with a wider range of amenities to serve the public see page 31.

Dear Editor, The poor behaviour of drivers along Cotterill Avenue continues, and wildlife is the victim. On Saturday night, 5th June, a wallaby was killed and left on the road. But the next evening one driver has outdone themselves with a display of insensitive cruelty that I and my neighbors witnessed on Sunday 6th June between 7.20 and 8.00pm. We heard a loud bang from the road and saw a car speeding past; the driver put the brakes on about 60 metres down the road - then continued to drive away.

I went outside to find a badly injured wallaby left lying on the road. The poor animal clawed itself to the side of the road and lay there unable to get up. About 30 minutes later a Subaru Wagon, plate number 898RHW, that looked like the one that hit the wallaby arrived, stopped in the road and maneuvered the car so the headlights were on the wallaby. I saw the female driver had a phone in her hand; it looked like she took a photo

of the badly injured creature, then drove away!

Why would someone do such a thing?

To her I would say I can only assume that you needed a photo for the insurance claim. I would like to think that you were ringing to get help for the animal, but as you did not get out of the car, I cannot think that was the case. I doubt that you even saw me approaching your car to talk with you as you drove off. I prefer to think that I am wrong in my assessment of your behavior, but I doubt it. If you are interested: he was a young Swamp Wallaby and my neighbor and I organized help for the animal and stayed close till he was collected.

On Wednesday night 9th June around 10.30pm yet another wallaby was hit and left for dead. The impact was so hard that the animal was thrown across the road and into the guardrail, and then died a slow painful death. Why? Because the driver failed to stop and call for assistance. You may not care about the wildlife here on the Island and obviously you don’t care that people like me are left to deal with your carnage.

What a shameful group of people now live on the Island. I would like to remind everyone that Bribie Island is a Flora and Fauna SANCTUARY and it is us humans that should be modifying OUR behaviour to live here. It is a privilege to live on Bribie Island, not a right. If you don’t care for the wildlife then move. I for one would be pleased to see the back of you.

Kay (Full name & address supplied) Dear Editor, Congratulations to Mozza for the informative article regarding the nesting turtles and 4 Wheel Drive vehicles on Ocean Beach (Issue 64). I have read and signed BIEPA’s petition and see that they are not asking for a total ban on 4WD vehicles but rather to: 1. Have the beach access closed from 6pm to 6am.

2. Have vehicles driving on the hard sand below the high tide mark.

3. Have some control over environmentally sensitive sites.

This does not seem to be such a big ask to me and shouldn’t be a problem for responsible 4WD drivers as, let’s face it, only an idiot would drive along the beach at night.

I think under these conditions the new car wash being built near the cinema would still get plenty of business and according to local business operators I’ve spoken with, the 4WD beach

trippers bring in minimal business as most have stocked up before they reach the island.

Kind regards, Harold Meston (Address supplied) To the Editor, The Local Island and Surrounds News, I am writing in response to the article “200 years of History ended by State Government on Moreton Island”.. and offer an alternative title; Acknowledgment of 65 000+ years of Unceded Sovereignty. It is disappointing that this alarmist article was published during Reconciliation Week 2021 (27 May to 3 June) and just one day before the commemoration of Mabo Day (3 June), marking Eddie Mabo’s successful efforts to overturn the legal fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to noone), leading to the Native Title Act of 1993, establishing a legal framework for native title claims.

In relation to the article, the “experiment” of returning the lands of Minjerribah to the care of its Traditional Custodians, the Quandamooka people was realised 25 years after the first native title claim for the island was lodged, and more than eight years since the 2011 native title determination. It was a long road to walk. The return also marked an important win for the environment, with a commitment to expand the percentage of national park on the island and an agreement between the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAY), and the sand mining

Further, an example in the article, citing the return of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to the Anangua people (which occurred in 1985) and the decision to close Uluru to climbers on 26 October 2019 was supported by the local tourism industry and was lauded as a “shining example of sustainable tourism being a vehicle for the preservation, maintenance and ongoing development of culture, traditions and knowledge”.

The passing of Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) to the Quandamooka peoples was first introduced in July 2020 and referred to the former State Development, Tourism, Innovation and Manufacturing Committee for examination and report. The committee conducted an inquiry comprising a call for public submissions, public briefing with departmental officials, public hearing in Cleveland, and site visit to Moreton Island/Mulgumpin (the full report on the Bill can be viewed online).

The handover will see joint management arrangements in place and will give visitors “unprecedented insight and appreciation into the area’s cultural significance and history from Traditional Owners” and include investment in a “new ranger base, accommodation and workshops to support tourism operators and visitors”.. building on “visitation numbers to support jobs and support our economy”.

Medieval Merriment Maketh Abbeystowe!

It’s that time of the year when we go medieval at the Abbey Medieval Festival, where thousands of ‘pilgrims’ will get a taste of what life was like in the Middle Ages in Europe and the Middle East from 600 to 1600AD. Jousting, food vendors, merchants, re-enactors and performers will all be in action over the three-day festival, with Day One (Friday July 2) being the Medieval Family Fun Day, especially for kids and families.

She has keenly followed in his footsteps, and from a young age she has been travelling for tournaments, learning as a squire and gaining insider knowledge about life and

I have previously voiced my concerns at the level of articles in this community newspaper and the lack of diverse views published, and at the time received support from the then State MP. I would also bring your attention to the disgraceful editorial decision to publish the blatantly ill-informed and racist attached Letter to the Editor in Issue 61; there was a duty of care and responsibility here that was not met. I have included the current State Member, Ms Ali King, in this email. Once again, I argue that the publishing of such articles is a community issue as this newspaper is delivered to 24 000 households in the area.

In writing this, I acknowledge the Gubbi Gubbi, Jinibara and Turrbal Traditional Custodians, and their elders past, present and emerging.

I respect your views, as I’m sure many others do. The editor has also published your letter in full so that your arguments receive an equal amount of space as was given to my article.

However, I have a few things to clarify.

The timing of the article was dictated by the timing of the handover and was in no way meant as a response to Reconciliation Week or Mabo Day. Decisions on the timing of the events discussed were those of others.

I’m not sure everyone agrees with you on the matter of access to Uluru or other sites closed to climbers, and it has been widely reported in the media that many are not happy with this.

As for your assertions about climate change, racism and lack of diversity in the views given in the paper I would say people who agree with you have been given plenty of air time generally in the media of late, so it makes me wonder why those who disagree are berated so much when they dare to dissent from the views you have. Diversity of opinion cuts both ways I’m afraid.

I wonder if the lady is aware of the quotation attributed to the Greek philosopher Aristotle: “Criticism is something we can avoid easily by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.”

Doesn’t seem to be working too well for her, does it?

Community news Dear Editor I am writing regarding the article headlined ‘Loads of Business or Loads of Conservation’. The answer is quite simple: you can have both. If, as the Council sign at the entrance of the bridge states, Bribie Island is indeed a Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, then the guiding principle for business/ development should be that the development must co-exist with the surrounding environment. This includes preserving the Nesting Turtle Habitat.

Business should be encouraged and rewarded for being involved in the tourism opportunities that are part of Bribie’s natural environment. Attractions that have been a proven success for other areas of the Moreton Bay region, Turtle Watching amongst others. I don’t want to go to Mon Repos when I can see them here.

Banning 4WD access may be unpalatable, perhaps even extreme, but so is suggesting that a car wash that relies on 4WD beach traffic should override the guiding principle of a Flora and Fauna Sanctuary. The Queensland Environment Minister needs to find some common ground instead of suggesting there are more important areas where turtles nest, and that Bribie’s endangered turtles are disposable.

There is room for compromise which can start with the minister following her department’s own written risk mitigation strategies: • Enforce compliance and ensure the 4WD drivers follow the rules as set out on the National Parks web site which states: • “When driving, stay on tracks and off the dunes. Fore dunes are important habitat for wildlife.

Shorebirds lay their eggs on the sand and marine turtles bury eggs in the sand.”

There is ample photographic evidence showing many people ignore this advice and strong policing of the rules should be implemented to ensure consequences for non-compliance.

Environmentalists, local business and relevant government bodies must start to work together to find an outcome that will protect the island and achieve beneficial outcomes for local business owners.

Michael Linder (address supplied) Dear Editor, For the information of people in Bribie and surrounds I found out yesterday, through a friend who is on Facebook, that Ali King had announced the site of the new hospital on her Facebook page. I do not use this media and I’m sure a lot of people don’t either, hence this email.

So readers, this site is on the corner of Goodwin Drive and First Avenue just off the roundabout, there are three Schools, a Child Care Centre and a Church in First Avenue, so no traffic issues and congestion for any emergency vehicles there! But what is truly awful is the fact that this site is a national habitat for our precious wildlife; there are two Koala and two Kangaroo signs nearby testifying to this fact.

Our premier would never dare to try this destruction of wildlife habitat in Noosa!

Continued from Page 6 Project Managers during my working life and the fact that this site is in a hollow, swampy, and several feet below the road level would prove to be a very costly exercise in site works alone, and surely swallow up most of the couple of million allowed in the budget for the hospital!

Because the site is State-owned the Council cannot object to this land being used for a hospital, but never in a million years would any Council approve a private developer’s application for this purpose on this site.

Now, in my letter to the Editor on 13th January 2021, I did advise your readers that Ali King had told me when I queried where the hospital was to be built, that there were seven sites where it could be built but first it would need to go out to public consultation. Has anyone seen this notice of public consultation or been advised where said seven sites are?

There is no doubt that we desperately need this hospital like yesterday; in fact it has been promised by the Labor Government for the last four years, or so an older gentleman told me at election time and I’ve no reason to disbelieve this. I have a dear friend who has to travel weekly to Brisbane for chemo treatment and no doubt plenty of your readers also have friends and or family that would be so relieved to see this facility built

quickly, but not at the expense of the extinction of our wildlife habitat.

Surely, if we can protest about Labor removing our pelicans’ roosts, we can all try and stop this travesty and do all we can to have an alternative site considered?

I would ask Ali King to show some respect for the constituents she purports to represent, and keep us informed of what, if anything, she is doing for this area, bearing in mind we do not all rely on Facebook.

Gillian Adams (Address Supplied) Dear Editor, Is it any wonder that writers of Letters to Editors often prefer to remain anonymous, when complaints to the council result in criminal action?

In ‘Letters’ from your last edition the writer referenced “The respondent’s reaction came by firing a ‘shanghai’ with ball bearings”, after a complaint to council. This is a very dangerous act, which is particularly disturbing, and could have resulted in serious injury. Residents of White Patch are well aware of this culprit, and “Look what she made me do”, doesn’t cut it.

Councillors also have a lot to answer for, failing in their duty to keep complainants’ identities confidential.

State Budget Addresses Health Crisis

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick handed down the Queensland budget with the headline act being a return to surplus, meaning Queensland is the first state back into the black since the COVID outbreak.

Mr Dick was very pleased with himself, renaming the sunshine state as the ‘sunrise state’. Other numbers coming from the Labor Government include expected growth of 3.25% (double the national growth rate) with unemployment levels to reach 5% by 2025, the lowest since 2009.

That is the good news and a positive spin.

The total debt of $127bn doesn’t sound so good, but hardly surprising given the total debt pre-COVID. The big-ticket item for the local community is health. A health sector in crisis that we have featured several times over the last few issues of this publication. A health sector that should never have been in the state it is. This budget provides $15m for the Bribie Island Satellite Hospital, $15m for the Caboolture Satellite Hospital, over $121m for the Caboolture Hospital (current hospital) which includes a 5-storey clinical services building, 130 new beds and a brand new emergency department.

This is in addition to 9475 more frontline

staff and 535 paramedics over the next 4 years. This level of investment is significant, and we can only hope that it does address the current health crisis. The State Government is also pressuring the Federal Government in relation to increasing GP numbers and proposed Medicare cuts.

We can only hope with such a significant investment to improve our health system that it is enough. Imagine if it isn’t? That would really show how deep the health crisis is in 2021. One can’t help but feel the State Government is taking all this credit for fixing something that they broke.

Maybe the narrative should be, how did the health system get to this point where it needs so much expenditure to get it right?

According to the Opposition, the Treasurer made nearly $6b in announcements that can’t be delivered in this term of parliament. If it’s not in the budget it doesn’t exist is their catchphrase. Only time will tell if it does exist or not.

We can only hope that this State Budget fixes what should never have been broken.

So what is art therapy? Art therapy uses creative arts processes such as as painting, sculpture, drawing and sand play, etc., as a catalyst to recognising and healing life’s challenges.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young welcomed the grant, which will ensure better social and health outcomes for young locals. “headspace Caboolture has been experiencing high demand for services and this funding will help them expand their services and improve access to high quality, youth friendly and mental health support,” Mr Young said.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said one in four young Australians are affected by a mental illness every year.

“The funding reinforces our Government’s strong commitment achieving better mental health for all Australians and will complement our record investment of $6.5 billion in mental health and suicide prevention services in 2021-22,” said Minister Hunt.

The fledgling Beachmere Classic Vehicle Club, in only its second year, was pleasantly surprised to win the trophy for Most Represented Club at the Caboolture Regional Car Club’s recent Show ‘n’ Shine and Swap Meet at the Caboolture Showgrounds, sponsored by Shannons. The trophy was happily accepted by President James Weston and to top it off one member received the lucky door prize of a bucket of Bowden’s car products.

Dear Editor, I read with concern your article in Issue 64 on increasing wildlife deaths on Bribie. I live in Toorbul which is home to a declining mob of Eastern Grey kangaroos.

On April 21st I woke to find a young female roo dead on the esplanade. Her face had been smashed. Her intact body lay on the bitumen in a 50kph speed zone and 50 metres past a kangaroo warning stencil on the road.

For some months prior to her death I’d been in the daily habit of counting 13 kangaroos that would gather late afternoons on grass adjacent to where she had been killed. At dusk they’d cross the road and move along the foreshore.

It took a month for any of that mob to return. Now it’s two months since her death and there are only six returning to the site.

It’s tempting to think that witnessing this trauma has changed the behaviour of her family group.

Solutions? How would it be if we drivers committed to drive at a speed that allows us to give right of way to wildlife on the road, as we do for children? Strategically placed signs could ask visitors to do the same.

To live on the coast among kangaroos feels like a quintessential Australian privilege. Let’s pull out all stops to retain this privilege.

Recipients of QLD Car Sales and Detailing Volunteer Award for June: David and Gillian Parry

Nominated by Bernie Wilson, President of the Rotary Club of Bribie on behalf of the Board, Gillian and David Parry are longstanding, hard-working members of Bribie Rotary. Very much partners in service, they tirelessly give of themselves to the Bribie community.

Gillian, a past Rotarian of the Year and currently the Community Service Director, is the convenor of the Rotary Market held on the 2nd Sunday of each month at Brennan Park. This is an arduous job involving liaising with stallholders, handling the various issues and managing the rosters for Rotarians to staff the van.

This involves being at the park at 5 am and leaving around 1 pm. David and Gillian’s work at the market is instrumental in enabling Rotary to donate much-needed funds to the Bribie community. Gillian also assists with Rotary’s very popular Trivia and Film nights.

The couple have been very involved in Youth Exchange, including hosting and counselling. They also help with packing days at Donations in Kind, where donated goods and repurposed medical equipment

is sent to communities in need here in Australia and overseas. Gillian, an active member of St. Peter’s Anglican Church, is also a volunteer at Meals on Wheels, takes books to the Bribie Kindy for their outdoor library and was an organiser last year of Lift the Lid Fund Raiser for mental health.

Rotary Club President Bernie Wilson said, “Gillian and David are quiet achievers, who don’t look for accolades, who want to get on and service their community and get the job done. They epitomise the true Rotary spirit of putting Service Above Self. Gillian and David are very worthy recipients of the QLD Car Sales & Detailing Volunteer Award”.

Volunteers can be nominated for this free service via an email outlining how the person puts back into the community as a volunteer, has a selfless outlook in serving our community and describing the work of the worthy organisation the volunteer works for. Expressions of Interest sought for Bribie after hours health service

Brisbane North PHN will call for Expressions of Interest to identify a suitable provider for the Bribie After-Hours Health service.

The tender process previously carried out by the PHN to identify the provider was unsuccessful.

Member for Longman Terry Young said it was important to get after-hours primary health care right and in line with the expectations of Bribie Island residents.

“Having successfully fought hard for the required funding, the last thing I want to see is a service that is not meeting locals’ needs,” Mr Young said.

“Rest assured, the PHN is doing its best to deliver the best after-hours service possible for the people of Bribie Island.

“Once up and running, the service should help alleviate some of the issues around seeing a GP on Bribie Island after-hours.”

The PHN’s Health Systems Improvement executive manager Rachelle Foreman said Brisbane North PHN would now move to an adapted direct purchase process, which would begin with an informal Expression of Interest (EOI).

Ms Foreman said PHN staff would meet with local GPs to determine their interest and capacity to deliver the pilot service.

“Our intention remains to trial a sustainable, blended payment after-hours model of care, in line with feedback we received through the stakeholder engagement and co-design sessions we ran earlier this year,” Ms Foreman said.

Measuring your amazingness Everyone is amazing!

In some way, somehow, at some time, every one of us is amazing.

The trouble is most of us will not acknowledge our amazingness.

And for some reason only known to an old, wrinkled, buddah shaped sage hiding in a cave atop a snowy mountain in his unicorn onesy and bunny slippers, women are far worse at acknowledging their amazingness than men are.

Not sure why this is as I have yet to climb that particular snowy mountain and ask the unicorn onesey clad buddery sage that particular question, but as soon as I know, I will definitely let you know.

Meanwhile back at sea level I constantly watch our clients do amazing things and then as soon as it is pointed out to them the females will rapidly deny their amazingness, the males will usually give me a look that says…. “Duh! Of course I am amazing!” yes, sad but true.

The trouble we have as Personal Trainers is being able to measure this amazingness, and this makes it sometimes difficult to show the achieved amazingness to our clients.

This is because amazingness is a very individual thing. What is non-amazing to one person is incredibly amazing to another. For instance, if you have always had

the ability to stand up, bend over and touch your toes, then seeing someone else do this is not gob smackingly awesome. But if you have never in your 80 years been able to touch your toes and then by improving your fitness you find that one day you can – yes! It’s Officially Amazing!

Now this also doesn’t mean that the person who could always touch their toes is not amazing, honestly as someone whose toes have always wiggled out of reach no matter how I try, anyone who can achieve this is on my amazing list.

I also don’t think that wanting to be amazing should be the reason to do something. In fact I’m pretty sure that all those amazing people who are acknowledged for their amazingness never thought “I will swim the Bass Strait 19 times non stop wearing only zebra stripped budgie smugglers and copious amounts of Outer Mongolian yak grease to prove how amazing I am!”

Nope I’m pretty sure that they did it just to prove to themselves that they could.

Now, as you try and remove that mental picture forever from you mind, I want you to consider YOUR amazingness, and telling yourself you are not amazing at anything is not an option, because that’s just not true.

Senior Gentle Warm Up Your Body Exercises Before You Start!

IIf you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others.

That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements.

Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

These exercises are a great way to “warm up” your body especially as the morning get cooler. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with!

Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. You can do these sitting on your bed or in a stable chair.

WARM UP YOUR WAIST

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, your toes in a straight line and with your knees just slightly bent . With your hands on your hips slowly turn your upper body to the left. Bring your body back to the centre and then slowly turn your body to the right. Repeat 5 times each way or as many as you are comfortable doing.

SHOULDERS WARM UP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up.

Rest your left hand on your right shoulder.

Hold your left elbow with your hand and very gently pull it toward your body for 10 to 30 seconds.

Return to the starting position.

Repeat with your right arm. Repeat 5 times each way or as many as you are comfortable doing.

ANKLE WARM UP

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, your toes in a straight line and with your knees just slightly bent. Put one hand on the back of a chair or a table or the kitchen bench and stand tall. Stand steadily on one leg and raise the other slightly off the ground. Slowly draw circles with your foot 8 times clockwise then 8 times anti-clockwise or as many as you are comfortable with. Return to the starting position. Change supporting leg and repeat with the other foot.

CHEST & BACK WARM UP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Bring your hands up to chest height. Bend your elbows and with your palms facing the front. Pull your elbows backward slowly, keeping your arms close to your body. Push your palms forward slowly. Return to the starting position. Repeat 8 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing.

Yes, I will admit to being told I’m amazing by people. This is because I challenge myself to do things others find difficult or scary. I love to lift heavy things and then put them back down. I don’t think that’s amazing, to me it is what I enjoy doing and lifting heavy stuff is one tiny reason why I like to exercise, not the most important reason, but one on my long list of why I push heavy weights.

I also take part in speech contests, and most people find public speaking insanely scary, and so did I a while back, but now the more I do it the less amazing I think it is because now it is my normal.

But just like everyone else, when someone tells me it’s an amazing thing I do, I giggle nervously and say “NO! Anyone could do it if they tried” Because HONESTLY anyone can! You just have to start and keep going!

All of our clients have challenged themselves and improve their health and fitness. They are ALL achieving amazing results from these changes.

Some may be obvious, such as being able to complete 3 sets of 10 pushups on their toes when only 8 weeks ago they struggled to complete 1 set of 10 push-ups while almost standing upright doing the push-up against their kitchen bench.

Other achievements are not so obvious, but are just as amazing, walking further every day when only a few weeks ago they never went for a walk. Going for a walk amazing???

Not to some, but to someone who found walking around the supermarket difficult then yes!

And just because no one tells you that you are amazing it doesn’t mean they don’t think you are. We tend to think people are judging us for the wrong reasons, but this isn’t true! If you decided to try a little jog while you are walking and you see someone looking at you, most women will think “oh no they think I look ridiculous!”. In reality the person watching is most likely thinking “Look at her Go!! I wish I could jog too!”

So if someone tells you they think you are amazing don’t mumble that you aren’t. Say thank you, be proud and see if you can help them find their own amazingness. Maybe they want to be able to do as well as you are, and in that case encourage them to join in with you and be amazing together.

A ‘ Pas de Deux ‘ – me and the Queensland State Health system…

Apart from health professionals, nobody really wants to go to a hospital – any hospital! People go to hospitals because they are not well and need medical help; in a general sense!

But, from time to time, as life unfolds, your biology tells you that you have a problem and it must be fixed…no hesitation, no equivocation.

And. Recently that was me!

Facing reality is brutal and looking into the mouth of the dragon is confronting; all humans must do it at some point, not because they want to, but because they have to…

More than enough times have I made the point in this column, that the truth can be hidden, can be denied but it is always the truth and it will always be there!

This place, Sunshine Coast University Public Hospital was just bloody brilliant.

And then; there are the angels of the wards.

They come, they go, day and night, they are there to make you better, to monitor your vital signs, to harass you if needed, to calm you when anxiety takes over and to let you know that you are the only patient in the place and that everything they do is for you!

Complex human activity revolves around the requirements of a large hospital, but the first impression I gained was one of happy people, wanting to assist others and all working in a clean and sparkling environment.

My confidence flowed upward – a little.

A few hours later, after some complex surgery, conducted by female surgeons/ magicians, I woke in a room where I was attached to cannulas, drains, drips, and machines which produced, in concert with a series of beeps, a series of continuous numbers which kept many observers busy for some time…but, at least they always thought the “ numbers were good!”

This is the time when you can see the system at work.

As always, it is those who do the essential work that makes the place work – the cleaners and hygiene workers in this Hospital were just brilliant – non-stop cleaning and spraying, mopping, sweeping, chasing down bits of fluff, lumps of this and that and fearlessly attacking showers and bathrooms where normally cautious people would hesitate to enter…all the time, smiling, happy…they flooded the surgical wards with infectious enthusiasm.

I lay there, listening to my numbers beep their way through the night and I questioned…” So what is the problem with the Queensland Health system? “

State hospitals, simply by their existence, are large, fizzing bureaucracies and Sunshine Coast University State Hospital was no exception.

Clearly marked volunteers were present right from the beginning and somewhere, in the background, a grand piano was playing. Seriously!

That is the essentials. The cleaners and the foodies, if those elements of the place worked, happily and enthusiastically, then the rest of the operation was usually going to be alright.

They wear dark blue, they manage large, mobile computer terminals, whose screens hold secrets only those blue-clad angels can interpret.

I was not a judge, I was a part of the process; antennae twitching, I noticed that the Hospital was new and superbly appointed, entry foyers were full of people coming and going, smiling as they did so!

It is difficult to keep smiling whilst delivering ice cream scoops of mashed Brussel sprouts, night after night, but they did!

Thus, I became involved in the Queensland State Health system and the venue was the Sunshine Coast University State Hospital.

Bureaucracies create tensions and levels of human activity; because of my curiosity about human activity and because I had heard that Queensland’s health system was in crisis I had my antennae fully extended by the time I became fully engaged with the process of fixing my medical situation.

humungous wheeled machines with food, tea, coffee, apples, mandarins, whatever, they had it or they would get it. They too, smiled, they smiled coming and going, day and night and those smiles did more good to anxious patients than most of them will ever know!

And then, the foodies. They come bringing

Overstated a bit? Probably. But nurses are the front line of health systems across the world and Queensland Health has plenty of very, very, good ones.

Each day, at regular intervals, surgeons arrive with their teams of Registrars as they follow up their surgical procedures. Calm, in control, quiet commands given and accepted, fiercely intelligent eyes roam across the screen with your numbers displayed and the surgical wounds they have put on your body to deal with the problems that brought you to this place, they exude confidence and competence and then they move on…

Eventually, you can go home and begin the business of repairing yourself, adjusting to the new reality of who you are and what happened to you.

I note the media hysteria rolls on, Queensland Health in crisis, ambulances ramped up beside casualty wards, and they are!

Politicians shouting, pointing. Media nonces smiling, speaking manglish to cameras as they predict outcomes they know nothing about.

And, I came to the following conclusion: Once you are in the Queensland Health system, the professionals in that system make it work superbly, no fuss, no bother, just get the job done and move on to the next problem. The hospital I have spoken about is impressive, the volunteers, the grand pianos, the smiling car park police – all of it – is about as good as you can get in Western democratic health systems.

The health professionals, all of them, whatever their task make it work because they want it to work.

The problem, and it is a very, very, big problem.

Is getting into the system. That is hard and that can only be fixed by politicians.

Bribie Respite & Support Services are also providing a Men’s and Ladies Group each week, which are around the interests of the clients in attendance.

Meals and Refreshments are made fresh daily and we can cater for dietary requirements We also offer In Home Flexible Respite.

Which includes services in social support, community access and personal care.

Our Aged Care Services are currently provided through My Aged Care (CHSP) funding or through your home care package.

Door to door transport is provided in both Aged Care – Day Respite and NDIS services.

Bribie Respite and Support Services take enormous pride in supporting clients in their local community. As a not-for-profit business all monies generated are reinvested into our Bribie based business for the benefit of the Bribie Island community. We create jobs, supporting local businesses and local community groups.

Our Banksia Beach Respite House is becoming well entrenched in the disability community as a home away from home.

NDIS clients have recently been hosted from north and south of Brisbane, as well as Bribie locals. To cope with the demand our staffing levels have recently been expanded, reflecting the quality of the home on offer and the exceptional level of care provided by the wonderful hard working staff of Bribie Respite & Support Services.

NDIS clients stay at the house, have a break and learn the skills they require to live independently. Whilst within our care, clients are having fun and accessing the Bribie Island community for activities of their choice.

Community Living Services NDIS clients, like all of us want & need to access the community and sometimes Mum or Dad just can’t do it. Bribie Respite & Support Services “bridge the gap” to make this possible to safely access the community.

Support Staff provided by Bribie Respite & Support Services don’t just take you & leave you to your own devices. Our support staff “get in” & do whatever it is that you need….not just the fun stuff!

Get involved with Bribie Respite & Support Services to independently access local clubs and pubs for bingo, music trivia, live entertainment, karaoke and casual dining. We also support clients to attend events such as sports, concerts, fishing, 4WD, hiking, camping, weekends away and extended travel. We do all the work, arranging each occasion for our clients and assist with affordability by finding others wanting the same events which makes it cheaper for everyone.

Each week we are supporting our clients either individually or in small groups to attend water aerobics, walking netball, music bingo, therapies, health appointments and shopping, along with support at home, cooking a meal or treat for Mum and Dad.

And conducted a 2 Day Camp on the Sunshine Coast …and had countless lunches.

Boost to Specialist Care on Bribie Locals now have greater access to specialist health care on Bribie Island, with one of the world’s largest and most diverse private health care companies, Ramsay Health Care, opening specialist consulting suites at Bongaree.

Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Brooke Savige declared the rooms officially open at a 17 June event attended by local GPs, specialists consulting on the island, and some of the team from Caboolture Private Hospital, which is part of Ramsay Health Care.

A number of specialists will regularly visit Ramsay Consulting Suites Bribie Island to support pre- and post-operative care across gastroenterology, urology, general surgery, orthopaedics and general medicine including infectious diseases.

Caboolture Private Hospital CEO Chris Murphy said his team are committed to making quality health care easily accessible for locals close to home, at 60 Hornsby Road Bongaree, in front of the shopping centre.

“We felt that it would be beneficial for the residents of Bribie Island to be able to schedule appointments to see specialist surgeons and physicians in their local community.

“Most of the specialist doctors currently consult and admit at Caboolture Private and we will also have other key specialists visiting from Ramsay hospitals on the Sunshine Coast. This will broaden the overall range of specialists who will consult and also reduce travel for local residents.”

Preferred Site Chosen Seven More Clinics Join Longman’s COVID-19 for Bribie Island Vaccine Rollout Satellite Hospital

Since the promise made just prior to the October 31 State Government election, one of the hottest topics on Bribie has been where is the hospital going to go? This announcement was the big ticket item of the campaign.

Our very own hospital.

Rumours and confusion led people to mention a variety of potential sites including First Avenue, Woorim or near the shops at Bellara. Since the announcement we have had 8 months to speculate but if you would have guessed somewhere between those two sites you would have been right!

Or maybe right, as at this stage the selection is the ‘preferred site’ so we can assume that it isn’t yet set in stone.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced recently that Crown Land on First Avenue, Bongaree has been identified as the preferred site. The 1.6ha site is currently owned by Education Queensland. Can we assume that Education Queensland want to give this site up, or do they not have a choice?

This is exciting news for the community and a big step forward for the satellite hospital because the current health crisis which has resulted in

waiting weeks to see a doctor, waiting hours for ambulances at home and sitting in ambulances waiting at the hospitals, waiting hours in emergency rooms and travelling long distances to see specialists and so forth will hopefully not continue for much longer.

While the specifics of the hospital remain limited, the Health Minister mentioned community health services, day therapy services, chemotherapy, urgent care for minor injury and illness as options, and taking pressure off the Caboolture Hospital’s emergency department was discussed by the Local Member. The next stage of planning will define the type of care available at the satellite hospital.

The satellite hospital will be completed in 2023 says the State Member for Pumicestone, with $15m provided from the recently announced State Budget. It is expected remaining funds will be from the 21/22 State Budget.

We look forward to seeing construction commence and for the local community to benefit from our very own health hub that has been so long coming and that will make life easier for so many.

Three more clinics administering the Pfizer vaccine to Longman residents have now been opened to meet the higher demand for that vaccine after the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) two weeks ago recommended it as the preferred vaccine for people aged 16 to 59 years. Four new AstraZeneca clinics have been added to the 19 clinics already administering that vaccine. More Pfizer clinics are expected to be added to the rollout over the next few months.

The decision by the Australian Government to fast-track the transition of GPs to administer Pfizer has been welcomed by Longman MP Terry Young, who said, “This is great news for locals who want to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.”

Men’s Sheds Grants Closing Soon During the recent Men’s Health Week, Member for Longman Terry Young encouraged all Men’s Sheds across Longman to apply for funding through the newest round of the National Men’s Shed Development Programme (NDSP).

“Men’s Sheds are friendly and inclusive settings where men can meet to work with tools and equipment, or just spend time together, to support each other’s mental and physical good health,” Mr Young said.

“Our Government is committed to ensuring that even during the pandemic, members can stay in touch and continue to provide meaningful contributions to their communities.”

Men’s Sheds have until 26 July to apply for financial support under Round 22 across the following funding categories: • Category 1: Health, Wellbeing,

and Events - $8,000 maximum • Category 2: Shed Improve

ments - $8,000 maximum • Category 3: Equipment -

District 9600, presented the Pride in Workmanship Awards assisted by Rotary Club President Bernie Wilson.

With friends and work colleagues gathering to support the nominees, the glamorous dinner event was held at the Pacific Harbour Golf Club.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery, accompanied by Councillor Brooke Savige, congratulated the awardees and commented how impressed he was with the quality of awardees and how special the evening was.

Keynote speaker for the evening was Steve Baker, Past President of the Rotary Club of Caboolture, who spoke about his photography career and related it to the idea of ‘doing it once, doing it well’ - the underlying rationale of the awards.

Neil Black, Rotary District Governor,

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said connection was the key to the success of the more than 1,000 Men’s Sheds around the country.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough for many Australians, and it is vitally important that Shed Members remained connected to their community during this time,” Mr Hunt said.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting Men’s Sheds, we provided $500,000 to Sheds around Australia in the latest round of NDSP grants and $6.4 million in grant funding to support Men’s Sheds since 2013.”

Regional Health Minister Mark Coulton said Men’s Sheds played a vital role in regional Australia, becoming one of the most important regional organisations.

“Men’s Sheds provide a safe and friendly environment for men to gather and or work on meaningful projects, with the ultimate aim of improving the health and wellbeing of their members,” Mr Coulton said.

“I am also pleased to announce that work will soon begin on the $1.5 million Regional Coordinators for Men’s Sheds Initiative, which helps Men’s Sheds to connect with local health services and promote health events for their members.”

Men’s Sheds Associations in WA, Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland will be funded to introduce regional coordinators in those states.

The Australian Men’s Shed Association, which manages the NSDP, has also received funding under the initiative to implement regional coordinators in NSW, the ACT, SA and the NT. Regional coordinators will be introduced in every state and territory.

The Importance of Giving

are passionate about; all around the world there are organisations and individuals dedicating themselves to bettering the environment, human rights and overall quality of life.

Christmas in July? This superfluous ‘celebration’ is one that seemingly takes the retail world by storm. For us as Australians it seems to be an opportunity to celebrate the white Christmas we see in films but never experience. However, when taking a closer look, it appears to be a money grab from corporations and, ultimately, unnecessary.

In times when people around the world are still struggling to access clean water, are trying to cope with the unforeseen circumstances arising from the pandemic and cannot afford basic necessities, it seems tone deaf to embrace such an event.

Many within our own country are still trying to gain employment after being made redundant. It is in times such as these that we must make a conscious effort to think past ourselves and consider the implications such actions can have on others.

Rather than spending money on needless ‘festivities’ we should consider the positive impact that we can endeavour to achieve. Rather than spending money on sales, think about the change that money can accomplish when given to a charity of your choice, whether that be a women’s shelter or a charity to help those struggling with housing. Consider what you

In opening our eyes to this issue, we allow ourselves the opportunity to expand our horizons and help - no matter how small that contribution may be. Over the past year we have seen changes and events occur that were almost unbelievable. As we begin to slowly emerge from total lockdowns, this freedom and new way of life brings with it a significant shift in perspective and view. If the pandemic has taught us anything, it is that without cooperation we face innumerable challenges.

This may seem an extreme ‘take’ on a harmless ‘celebration’ but it’s simply a plea for society to recognise that there is power and possibility in working together.

Perhaps we should celebrate Christmas in July, but not in the traditional sense.

We should be celebrating the ideals we all love and cherish about that holiday season: giving, loving and unity. But, more importantly, it is vital to remember that we do not need an event or a date in order to give. These acts of compassion are what give people hope and will be the foundations upon which we base our world after the pandemic.

So, as the world begins to awaken again and emerge from trying times, we must remember that there are many still struggling, many who still need our support.

Federal Govt Sets $472,000 NEW FINANCIAL YEAR INFO to Save Lives in Longman

Moreton Bay Councillor Brooke Savige and Member for Longman Terry Young at the Goodwin Drive pedestrian crossing.

Crossing the road on Goodwin Drive, Bongaree, near the Bribie Island shopping centre, is to be made significantly safer with the Morrison Government’s investment of $472,000 on a major pedestrian crossing upgrade under the Federal Black Spot Program. Work will be carried out in the 2021-22 financial year.

A new signalised pedestrian crossing will replace the existing zebra crossing and will involve decreasing the crossing distance by installing kerb buildouts and narrowing the centre median. The new traffic signals will include push button activation with pedestrian count-down timers, advance warning signage and flashing lights.

There is a history of rear-end crashes at this intersection as well as pedestrians being hit where vehicles travelling on Goodwin Drive failed to give way. Road crashes place major emotional and eco-

nomic strains on all affected communities but particularly the families and friends of the victims.

Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young, said that Moreton Bay Regional Council had nominated this crossing for blackspot funding in early 2020 and he’s pleased to see it delivered under the Federal 2021–22 Black Spot funding round.

The Federal Government has committed $1.1 billion to the program from 2013–14 to 2023–24 to improve road safety across the nation and Community input is critical to identifying key black spots in Longman.

By the time you read this it will most likely be after the close of the current financial year. So too late to do any pre EOFY tax planning. But there are some points to consider from 1st July.

The Superannuation Guarantee Rate for employers to pay into the super of their employees rises to 10%. Anyone using computer software must check that this has been changed ASAP or that an update from the providers has done this for you.

The ATO is warning that home office claims are on their radar together with work-related expenses including car and travel. Last year the claims for car and travel decreased due to many taxpayers working from home.

However, items such as protective clothing, hand sanitisers and face masks increased due to direct contact work.

You are advised to not say “the same as last year” because it will not be the same. The ATO is expecting some expenses to reduce further in 2021 claims, whilst others to continue to increase in the changing environment of work.

The working from home shortcut method has been extended to 2021 financial year so ensure you have your diary or other form of documentation to be able to claim this expense.

There are nearly 40 occupation and industry guides online. Why not download one for your specific occupation and make sure that you have the relevant dockets and receipts for them. Just because it is on the list does not make it an automatic deduction. You have to have incurred the

expense or it may not be claimable by you.

Air BNB is still on the radar too, even though your income may have decreased because of COVID. Make sure of your claims during the rental times as expenses are generally not deductable when not rented out.

Support Program for Bribie Seniors and Carers Extended Practical help and advice for older people and carers is now offered through a Volunteer Community Peer Navigator Program at the Bribie Island library. The pilot program, a partnership between the Council On The Ageing (COTA) Queensland and Moreton Bay Regional Council, was launched in March and has been extended until the end of July, with sessions taking place every Tuesday between 10.00am and 6.00pm. The program aims to empower older people and their carers to access relevant services and supports, gain confidence in using technology to maintain their mental and social wellbeing and adapt to changing circumstances.

Volunteer peer navigators actively engage in meaningful one-to-one, one-off or ongoing conversations with individuals.

By listening with empathy to their story, navigators can identify the specific needs and priorities of older people and their carers, then direct them to the most appropriate services and supports, including healthcare, aged care, social, cultural and community services and supports. Jodi Doe from Home Instead has also assisted in providing information on helping seniors to stay independent in their own homes.

People who have a good knowledge of local services and supports and enjoy using digital technologies to access relevant information are welcome to apply to become Volunteers.

New Caboolture Watchhouse Now Fully Operational Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll and Queensland Police Union Secretary Mick Barnes earlier this month for the official opening of the new $14.4 million Caboolture Watchhouse.

In addition to the new watchhouse facilities the building, located on the site of the previous Caboolture Police Station, also houses specialist facilities for up to 40 support staff from units including the Caboolture Prosecution Corp, Domestic and Family Violence Unit, Moreton District Youth Co-Responder Team and the Moreton District Tasking and Coordination Unit.

“I would like to thank all police who work in Caboolture and the Moreton Bay region for their dedication and professionalism to keeping our community safe,” Minister Ryan said.

“The rapid growth of this region in recent years means police facilities need to keep pace with the requirements of the local community.

State Budget Promises $460m For Training, Employment Aid Schools Urged to Help Break Safety Heroes Record

A big boost for job skills, training, and programs backing businesses to get unemployed people into work is expected from an investment of $460 million into two major programs highlighted in the Queensland Government’s 2021-2022 State Budget.

The Skilling Queenslanders for Work program (www.training.qld.gov.au/ sqw), which Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said has already helped more than 36,000 people into jobs, will benefit from the provision of $320 million.

“Organisations like the Youth Development Foundation here in Pumicestone have done fantastic work through Skilling Queenslanders for Work.

“This funding will see more projects like Bribie’s Congeau House upgrades help young people get the skills they need while completing valuable work for our community.”

“The funding commitment for four years means disadvantaged Queenslanders can gain skills, qualifications and experience to join and remain in the workforce.

In addition, the Back to Work program (www.backtowork.initiatives. qld.gov.au) will receive $140 million over four years.

“I want to support small business owners to not only create jobs but also access a skilled workforce to fill them.”

Treasurer and Minister for Investment Cameron Dick said the funding earmarked for the“revitalised” program would make a real difference.

“It has already helped more than 25,000 people get into work, and this major investment will help thousands more,” the Treasurer said.

“The program assists businesses to take on unemployed Queenslanders.

“Mentoring, training guidance, and support to obtain a drivers licence or a blue card have all now been added to the program.”

More Queensland primary schools are being encouraged to register for the long-running electrical safety education program run by Energex and Ergon Energy and help them break a participation record.

“The registration record is 1417 primary schools, which is an incredible 97%, but we want to hit the magic 100% this year,” said Cloe Kernick, Energex and Ergon Acting Executive General Manager Customer.

“Since 2015 we’ve been sharing lifesaving information on how to spot electrical hazards in the home and in the community and how to behave safely around electricity.

“Every year we hear examples of children passing these life lessons on to younger siblings, parents and grandparents, so the flow-on benefits are enormous.”

“The teaching resources are designed for a variety of ages and abilities, aligned with the P-6 Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education. They include a

social stories booklet for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, simple circuit demonstration kit, stickers and posters.

“We’re surrounded by electrical equipment from the day we’re born, so we need to understand as early as possible how to recognise the dangers and stay safe.

“Whether we’re teaching children to look up and live when they’re climbing trees and flying drones or encouraging them to take care and stay line aware after a storm – there are some simple safety messages that will serve them well for life.

“The more electrical safety heroes we have in our communities the better, so we’re encouraging all Queensland primary schools to get online and register now,” Cloe said.

Queensland schools have until 20 August to register at energex.com.au/ safetyheroes , and will then receive a free resource and prize pack to engage students in Electricity Safety Week from 6-10 September.

Most sufferers feel there is no hope and nothing they have tried has worked. But already there are thousands in Brisbane who have found great help from this programme. It’s called the Depression and Anxiety Recovery Program (DARP).

DARP has been running in the Brisbane area for the last ten years. And there has been remarkable success. People say “I have not felt this good for years” and “I’m waking up each morning looking forward to my day. I cannot remember the last time I was like that”.

Lynne from Jimboomba was feeling completely without hope. She could see no purpose in living, even for her pre-teen children. She had made her plans to drive off a cliff with them in the car. She read about the DARP program and decided to attend. When she arrived at the door she said to one of the staff, “If this program doesn’t help me, I’m going to ‘off’ myself”.

Now she’s living on top of the world. She wakes up each morning eager to start her new day.

Robyn is a grandmother of three. Her daughter told her she was too negative and critical and said she didn’t want her around the children. Robyn tried to be more positive and less critical. But she could not do it. She had not been allowed to see her grandchildren for three years when she came to DARP. Even before completing the 8-week program, Robyn was feeling better than she had felt for years.

She started visiting her grandchildren again and her daughter was amazed at the transformation.

These stories are not unique. People suffering depression, some for 20 years or more, have had the same results as those who have only suffered a short time. The program really works.

Depression is a world-wide problem and is very prevalent in Australia. Studies show that one person in every six in the doctor’s waiting room is suffering from depression or anxiety. Many of them don’t even know they have the disease and are seeing the doctor for other things. One

The severity of depression and anxiety can be “measured”. The University of New South Wales has developed what they call the DASS test. It stands for Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scales.

Everyone who attends DARP completes this questionnaire at the beginning and again at the end of the 8-week program.

The results have been amazing. People suffering major depression have become depression-free. Everyone who puts in the effort has had great results.

Doctors have many problems treating depression. Many people coming to DARP are taking anti-depressant medication but have found they are still suffering. Many have tried several different prescriptions, but they have not worked.

What is different about DARP? How does it work when so many other things fail?

Treating the symptoms does not help depression and anxiety. DARP actually looks at the causes.

The program was developed by an American specialist, Dr Neil Nedley. He researched all the world-wide studies scientists have completed on depression and anxiety. There were many studies showing 10% to 30% improvements in patient scores. When he collected them all together into one program, the results were amazing. Some people have had a 100% “cure”.

DARP is completely natural. Research has shown there are many things you can do at home that improve depression and anxiety. Just thinking positive thoughts does not work. But there are other ways you can use your brain to improve the symptoms. There are some simple physical exercises that make a big difference too.

Even what you eat makes a huge difference to your brain’s ability to recover and to feel normal again. The programme takes eight weeks because there are so many things that help with depression and anxiety. And when you use them together, the symptoms improve dramatically.

The next program in the Caboolture area starts with a free information evening on Tuesday 13th July 2021 at 7:00 pm.

Then the program will run each Tuesday night for 8 weeks, at the Caboolture SDA Community Centre located at 55 Caboolture River Road, Morayfield.

Critical services including health and education will be delivered by Queensland to Norfolk Island residents following the withdrawal of services previously provided by New South Wales. Under a partnership agreement initiated last month between the State and Federal governments, all costs associated with service delivery will be fully funded by the Federal government.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the agreement recognised Queensland’s ability to overcome the challenges of distance to deliver high-quality, essential services like health and education.

“Working with the Commonwealth, we look forward to tailoring these essential

services to meet the unique needs of the Norfolk Island community, inspiring favourable outcomes for the more than 1,700 people who call the island home.”

The governments will develop arrangements for essential school education delivery and health services support on Norfolk Island as the first priority, working closely with the New South Wales Government.

The agreement also provides for the Australian and Queensland governments to continue to consider other state services progressively over time to provide Norfolk Islanders with comparable services and regulatory support to similar mainland communities.

The Price of Progress?

By Staff Writer Mozza The amount of construction on Bribie Island is at an all-time high at present with more than a dozen buildings under construction or being renovated in Bongaree, Woorim and Bellara. This is in addition to the regular construction seen at Pacific Harbour as it reaches its final stages.

Land on the island is scarce and the advent of housing developments on the mainland side of the bridge has increased the value and appeal of an on island location. Woorim, especially, has seen almost every vacant lot sold and now developed into luxury homes and apartments.

The Esplanade and Welsby Parade at Bongaree have seen at least three new apartment complexes built recently and a number of houses built and renovated to take in water views.

The cost of this construction is huge, however the return on investment potential has increased lately to give confidence to developers. While there is always a lag between price rises and statistics from real estate data sources the latest figures indicate a 6% rise year on year. This will ultimately become higher as the current economic recovery unfolds.

Real estate agents are having real problems getting listings as demand outstrips supply and you may have noticed your letter box containing more offers to value and sell your home of late.

Federal funding supports $52 million for Moreton Bay Local Projects Stimulus support from the Australian Government will help Moreton Bay Regional Council deliver 57 priority projects worth nearly $52.5 million by the end of the year.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said Phase 2 of the Federal Government’s Local Road and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program will build on the $5 million from Phase 1 to see a further $15.6 million invested into improving transport networks and community facilities across the region.

“This program supports local councils to deliver priority infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“The third phase of our highly-successful LRCI program will continue to support local jobs and businesses at a time it is needed most.

“We are investing in vital programs like this under our record $110 billion infrastructure investment pipeline, part of our Economic Recovery Plan to secure Australia’s world-leading economic recovery.”

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said the funding will bring forward projects in the Council’s pipeline and create hundreds of

local jobs.

“This additional funding will see $52.5 million worth of projects delivered this year and will create more than 800 jobs,” Cr Flannery said.

“I’d like to thank the Australian Government for their ongoing support and investing more than $20 million into Moreton Bay Region through both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the LRCI Program.

“Council can now fast-track local infrastructure projects to be completed by the end of 2021.”

“While the Australian Government has been working to protect Australians from the pandemic, we believe it’s just as important to help keep the local economy strong,” Mr Dutton said.

“A key focus of the LRCI Program was improving connectivity across Moreton Bay Region’s transport network.”

Federal Member for Petrie Luke Howarth said an investment into local infrastructure is an investment for the future.

“The resilience of our communities

shone through during the pandemic, so it’s important to invest in community hubs and facilities that bring people together,” Mr Howarth said.

“We’ve worked with Moreton Bay Regional Council to identify priority community infrastructure and local roads projects that will deliver benefits for the community come 2022.”

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said if there’s one thing locals missed more than ever during this pandemic; it’s being outdoors.

“This funding will help promote an active and healthy lifestyle for our residents by improving local sporting and recreation facilities, including the new clubhouse for the Peterson Road facility, netball courts at Burpengary and the skate park at Morayfield,” Mr Young said.

“From upgrading playgrounds, installing new fitness equipment and building much-needed sporting infrastructure, we want locals to play and exercise without travelling too far away from home.”

The Australian Government will also provide Moreton Bay Regional Council with a further $10 million from the 2021-22 Budget for Phase 3 LRCI projects, which will be available from January 1, 2022. Projects funded under Phase 3 will be announced later this year.

Out, About, In and Around with MOZZA

Moreton Island Paradise on our Doorstep Having looked at Moreton Island for years from various locations at Woorim and Ocean Beach on Bribie, I ventured over there in the boat and visited Tangalooma, Cowan Cowan and Bulwer, going ashore for coffee and a sandwich.

After getting a taste of the place, I wanted to explore the island further than could be done on foot and recently booked a trip in the 4WD to check the place out properly.

Even though Moreton is only 45 minutes by boat direct from Bribie, taking the car takes considerably longer. The MICAT vehicle service leaves from the Port of Brisbane at Howard Smith Drive an

Maritime Safety Authority. There were originally five lighthouses built here in 1857 to assist ships navigating the northern passage into Brisbane.

The Lighthouse Information Centre will set you up for the remainder of the trip however arranging a camp site or other accommodation is best done before arrival. The MICAT service has a great website and offers accommodation through their affiliates on the island or separate arrangements can be made via accommodation providers or camping through the Department of Environment and Science website.

Once you have made your plan to see

You are now back on the calm western side of the island as you make your run south to Bulwer Wrecks. There are a number of great fishing gutters along this section of beach and Mackerel can be caught at sunset with pilchards and the right tackle. As the sun sets we made camp at the Castaways Glamping facility, which is reasonably priced and has many facilities such as a shop, fuel, shared kitchen, hot showers, fire pit and easy beach access.

Bulwer has quite a history as in August 1848, the maritime pilot station on Moreton Bay was moved from Amity Point on the northerly tip of North Stradbroke Island to Bulwer. In 1863 land was offered for sale at Bulwer for the first time. In November 1865 a school and teacher’s residence were erected for the families of the staff of the pilot station who were the principal residents at that time.

The trip is comfortable, after loading your vehicle on board you can relax upstairs on the big catamaran and enjoy coffee and meals, sit in comfort and enjoy the views on the one hour twenty minute journey.

Arriving at high tide may mean you need to use the Middle Road to cross to the surf side of the island after disembarking from the cat.

These middle roads are one way and in good condition whereas other sections of inland track elsewhere on the island can be two way with pull off areas to let oncoming traffic pass. Once on the eastern ocean beach, head north to Cape Moreton around 20 kms to the lighthouse and information centre for spectacular views of the beach and deep water ocean.

On the way, stop at Blue Lagoon to have a refreshing fresh water swim in this enormous untouched lake.

The Cape Moreton Lighthouse complex contains a weather station operated by the Bureau of Meteorology and the lighthouse structure and navigation equipment is managed by the Australian

the area, continue on to North Point and the Champagne Pools for an ocean swim or surf. Crystal clear waves break past the point and run parallel to the beach for several hundred meters so take your Malibu over if you can and enjoy the ride.

The pools are ideal for kids and waves will break over the pool edges to entertain them for hours of splashing in a safe area.

North Point

The following morning starts early with a low tide run along the western side of the island past the township of Cowan Cowan. In early 1942 the Queensland Main Roads Commission was directed to erect buildings, anti-aircraft gun emplacements, command and battery observation posts, underground plotting room, magazines, accommodation for officers and men, a 20,000 gallon concrete tank, and a 20 bed hospital at Cowan Cowan. They were also instructed to build a controlled mines station with accommodation for officers and men of the Australian Navy. The former Navy Signal Station at 25 Dorothy Newnham Street, Cowan Cowan (Fort Cowan) is listed on the Heritage Register of the Brisbane City Council.

From Cowan Cowan head south, bypassing Tangalooma using an inland track, on to Kooringal and the “World Famous Gutter Bar” for lunch and a drink. Kooringal is well established and was once one of the main points of access to the island by boat before shifting sands made boat access to Day’s Gutter impossible. The original family to live at Kooringal were the Day family with others visiting mainly as part of Brisbane fishing clubs on the weekends and holidays, squatting in shacks. In the 1970s the government auctioned off lots of land and many of the squatters became permanent residents of Kooringal. The Hawkins family operated the store at Kooringal for years and Hawkins Transport became a large business on the island.

Gutter Bar The Gutter Bar is a great spot to recharge and purchase supplies for the trip offering a range of goods and services. After lunch drive east to the southern tip just behind Kooringal to swim at the spit at Readers Point and look across the bar to Amity and Point Lookout on Stradbroke Island close by. Looking the other way west the city of Brisbane is on display with its high rise buildings, mixing city with wilderness and ocean in one experience.

This area is known as the south passage where 44 lives were lost in 1847 on the paddle steamer Sovereign and the use of south passage to enter Moreton Bay was discouraged after that.

Head north from here on the ocean side past Mirapool Lagoon which provides important habitat for shore birds, Little Sand Hills and Rous Battery Bunkers from WW2. During WW2, 900 troops were stationed at Cowan Cowan and Rous Battery.

Many roads such as Middle Road were cleared at that time and a naval station and jetty were also built at Tangalooma.

Continue past Eagers Creek back to the Lighthouse and you have traversed south to north around 40kms point to point.

Rous Battery I’d suggest a minimum of three days to allow for arriving and departure to give yourself enough time to see it all.

Be warned though one trip will leave you wanting more and a return is often inevitable once you fall in love with our nearest neighbouring island paradise.

Classic Boat Regatta Captures Locals’ Imagination

John Ward Walk a beautiful spot to walk or ride Knowing the ins and outs of Bribie Island takes a little while and quite often you find yourself driving past areas worth a look that perhaps you didn’t even know were there. John Ward Walk is such a spot and comprises three small lakes and walking or riding paths through leafy areas, a quiet spot for relaxing or exercising.

Dogs’ Off Leash Delights

The multi-purpose Antique Class “Jewel” in the Background On May 30 the 22nd Bribie Classic Boat Regatta assembled in Pumicestone Passage near the Volunteer Marine Rescue boat ramp to mark the start of the local marine market at Sylvan Beach. The day was organised by Bribie Aquatic Community Events (BACE) and attracted a large crowd of curious onlookers and wooden boat enthusiasts.

BACE was formed in 2021 to ensure the Bribie Classic Boat Regatta went ahead, and it intends to develop other events to service Bribie Island and the broader community. The Bribie Island Classic Boat Regatta was started in 1997 by Alan Graham and was continued from 2003 by the Bribie Island Boating Club. The regatta is supported by the Wooden Boat Association of Queensland.

Classic boats are classified as follows: • Historic – built up to and including 1918 • Antique – built between 1919 and 1942 • Classic – built between 1943 and 1975 • Late Classic – built after 1975 but before 25 years prior to the current year • Contemporary – built in the last 25 years This year’s event was sponsored by many local businesses, including Bribie Island Brewing, Southern Fish Marine, Caboolture Bus Lines, Bribie Island Golf Club, MBRIT, Bribie RSL, Busy Fingers, Ray White, L J Hooker and many more.

The markets included food stalls and representatives from the sponsors as well as traders looking to buy and sell boats on site. Many of the boats on display had

John Ward Walk Location Located in the Bellara Bibimulya Wetlands, it was originally saltwater marsh with mangroves which the council developed into three lakes to improve drainage, local water quality and control catchment flows.

The park at Sylvan Beach near the VMR has been in dire need of proper grass for some time as well as a shelter from sun and rain. Council hit a problem establishing grass in the sandy soil but this has now been overcome due to good summer rains and an irrigation system. A shelter has also recently been erected improving the facility out of sight. A local group of dog lovers have made the park their second home and most days the park is being used throughout the day. Three pm seems to be the main gathering time for this “Muttley” crew.

And now for something completely different … history cards with information about the building of the boat, location of operation over the years, details of refurbishments and specifications such as timbers used to build the vessel, motors used, the range of the fuel tanks and top speeds.

Probably the most notable vessel, “Jewel”, was built in Breakfast Creek in 1932 using Queensland timbers such as hoop pine and ironbark and has been used as a trawler, game fishing boat and live- aboard general bay boat. She also travelled to Hobart for the boat festival in 2019.

Bibimulya Wetlands

The two main off leash dog parks on Bribie Island have been improved by council after requests from locals.

Both parks now have better grass coverage and shelters as well as trial equipment for the dogs to play on.

The area was named after John Ward, a notable volunteer with many local environmental groups on Bribie Island and the Sunshine Coast. It contains many bird species which can be seen on your walk as well as many plant varieties.

To access the area by foot, walk through the car park between Ali King’s Office on Benabrow Avenue and the medical centre and cross Melrose Avenue. This is one of four entrances to the area off Melrose or Bibimulya Streets, Bellara.

So if Welsby Parade is being hit with a blast of winter south-westerlies, a change of venue to John Ward Walk for your daily exercise might be just the thing this winter.

The other larger dog park at Solander, near the Bowls Club and tennis court, has also been extended with both separated areas now larger. Having two areas for larger and smaller dogs to run separately is of great value and avoids issues between dog owners.

This is a great outcome for the local community, so take your best mate down for a look soon.

Winter is well and truly upon us. The whales have arrived right on cue and are out there around Cape Moreton in big numbers. A fully grown Humpback Whale can be the size of a bus and weigh 40 ton.

When an animal that size lifts its entire mass clear of the water it’s certainly a site to behold and can be a daunting experience when witnessed from a small boat.

Needless to say, they deserve respect and caution must be taken when boating near these animals. Particularly in low light conditions.

The cooler water inside the bay is the cue for increased Squid and Cuttlefish activity.

They’re easily targeted on almost any weed bed in Moreton Bay, my favourite areas being in front of the sand dunes around

Cody Hochen with a very nice Snapper on a soft plastic jerk shad.

Another Recent local big spanish Tangalooma. Almost any squid jig will eventually get eaten when slowly rolled through these weed beds at around mid water. You don’t want the jig too high off the bottom but you also don’t want to be snagging the weed either. Try varying sink periods and retrieve rates until you find what’s working on the day. Everyone has a favourite colour jig and personally I like a straight black, but a good rule of thumb is a bright colour for bright conditions and a darker colour in low light conditions. The theory being that a darker colour will cast a more noticeable silhouette in the lower light and squid are visual hunters. Squid are absolutely delicious when eaten fresh and if you haven’t eaten fresh squid you simply haven’t eaten squid. The trick is to cook them quickly! They also make superb baits for large Snapper.

As mentioned in previous reports, Winter is the time to be chasing those quality Snapper. Whilst they are caught sporadically throughout the bay all year round, Winter is when they aggregate in the shallow water of the inshore reefs to spawn. They’re here right now and the start of the season has seen many quality Snapper being caught throughout SEQ. It pays to put in some time sounding around and looking for where the fish are holding on a given day. A favourite ledge can be loaded with life one day and barren the next, while at other times an insignificant and isolated rock can be found stacked with fish for seemingly no reason. They can be caught using a variety of different methods. From the old paternoster style “bottom bashing” to soft plastics and even on fly. Mid range to large soft plastics are the “go to” for many with the “jerk shad” proving fruitful time and again.

They’ll be peaking in numbers over the following month before vanishing altogether from our local system over Spring.

Snapper often feed surprisingly high in the water column for a demersal species. Unlike targeting other demersals, maintaining direct contact with the bottom is not as much of a focus. However, high current will obviously make it harder to get baits down into the strike zone and keep them there. The days around the neap tide will be much easier to fish in regards to current and also the top and bottom of the tides around the spring tide period. Focusing on these times will be much easier, particularly when fishing places inside the bay such as the shipping channels and artificial reefs where large tides can kick up quite a lot of current.

For those serious anglers willing to go the extra mile and wanting to chase what is in my opinion the holy grail of fishing in SEQ, the mature Yellowfin Tuna are due to be passing us on their migration up the east coast to the Coral Sea. Earlier in the year we saw some incredible Yellowfin well in excess of 50kg being caught south of the border in NSW. They should be off our coast right now cruising along the top of the continental shelf. Now is the time to get one!

The days surrounding the new moon and full moon, coupled with high oceanic current, will always get Spanish Mackerel feeding more aggressively. Whether casting large stickbaits, live baiting or trolling diving lures, enticing a strike from a Spanish Mackerel can be a challenge in itself. Often requiring more patience and persistence than anything. Staying attached to these powerful speedsters once they are hooked is a challenge as good as any an angler can face. Good Luck!

Natural Garlic Pest Remedy

Garlic Bulbs

to grow. Does not like wet feet. Very aromatic and can be used fresh or dried.

Repels mosquitoes. A good companion for Sage but don’t plant near potatoes. Great with a lamb roast.

Thyme – many varieties including garden lemon or pizza. Great taste, smell and produces lovely flowers. Grows well in rockeries or pots. Helps repel the cabbage worm.

BUT, my favourite has to be …

Crush 3 large garlic cloves with 6 tablespoons of paraffin. Leave in a bowl for 48 hours. Grate a tablespoon of soap (I use Sunlight soap) into half a litre of hot water. Stir until it melts. Mix with the crushed garlic – cool and strain. Use two tablespoons of the garlic mix to three litres of water in a sprayer.

One of the 700 species of Allum used in cooking and as an insect repellent, a companion plant for citrus to reduce aphids and other sap sucking insects.

Late Autumn to early Winter is a good time to plant garlic bulbs. Garlic needs a sunny position, good drainage is essential, so consider planting garlic in raised mounds. The PH should be between 6 and 7. To prepare the soil and build it up, work in a complete fertilizer, well rotted manure, compost and blood and bone into the soil. Separate the cloves and plant single cloves 3cm deep and 10-15cm apart.

Rows should be 40-60cm apart.

Use an extra dressing of blood and bone in August and October (1 handful to a square metre) to keep the garlic healthy and strong.

The main pest is thrips. They suck the sap out of the foliage reducing the size of the cloves. Spray with Neem.

Harvest the garlic in Summer when the leaves have almost but not completely died. Lift the plant from the soil with a garden fork. Then hang in a cool dry place to dry.

Scarborough Fair Simon and Garfunkel had the right idea with four of the Top Herbs in their song – Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. Herbs can be grown either in pots or the garden.

They bring different scents to a garden and are wonderful when picked fresh and add an extra taste to your cooking. Herbs are not demanding plants and will often thrive without much attention, but for good results liquid feed once a fortnight with a good liquid fertilizer like Charlie Carp or Triple Boost.

Parsley – Italian or curled. Versatile and practical and also good for your health.

Easy to grow and can be used everyday in salads, soups and potatoes. Likes rich soil and some shade. A good companion for roses, tomatoes and asparagus Sage – green, purple or variegated. Does not like wet feet so needs good drainage.

A good companion plant for vegetables, repels the cabbage butterfly. The leaves can be used to clean your teeth and also in cooking with potatoes.

Rosemary – spreading, bushy or tall. Easy

water over the mint, stir in the vinegar mixture and allow to cool. Do not keep for more than 2 hours.

Potatoes In South East Queensland most gardeners prefer to grow a spring crop of potatoes (Planted Autumn to Winter).

Potatoes will grow in either light or heavy soils but good drainage is essential. Seed potatoes (tubers) are available in most nurseries now.

As a guide, a 1kg bag of seed potatoes should provide approximately 20 plants.

To prepare the bed dig to spade depth as they like dark damp conditions at planting time. Mark out the trench 15cm deep and 75cm apart. Use a complete fertilizer along the bottom of the trench about

Mint - related to Basil, Rosemary and Thyme, there are over 600 varieties.

Unlike most herbs, mint is as good dried as it is fresh. Mint enjoys a moist, fertile soil and will grow in either a shady or part shade position. It is extremely versatile with its sweet taste flavouring both sweet and savoury dishes. Mint is easy to grow, being vigorous and undemanding. It makes an ideal container herb, although if contemplating growing mint in the

garden bed beware of its rampantly invasive habit.

Mint Sauce

¼ cup per metre and cover with about 5cm of soil from the sides. Place tubers 30-40cm apart, cover with soil and sprouts should emerge in about 3-4 weeks.

Gradually hill the plants to form a trench between the rows using Sugar Cane Mulch. Hilling supports the plants, protects new potatoes from exposure to light and protects them from being attacked by caterpillars and potato month.

Allow the tops to die off completely before digging up. Remove soil from potatoes, discard any damaged or blemished ones and store in a cool dry place, which must be dark to prevent the skin from going green.

The most popular variety is Sebago, but there are many varieties available in your local nursery.
