Welcome to Issue 64, in which we have plenty of LOCAL news and articles to entertain you. Our Feature is the Federal Budget and what it all means for Longman residents.

I am incredibly pleased to advise you all I now have a wonderful person (who wishes at this stage not to be identified), who is now assisting me with editing. Thank you so much for your assistance M. You have helped us greatly with your experience and knowledge.

Last issue there were a few spelling errors in the paper, and I wish to apologise for this. Hopefully with a new experienced set of eyes, these mistakes will be minimal.

There has been a lot of controversy over our premier not getting the Covid injection last week and I am concerned; only last month we had the premier here hosting a morning tea for our seniors, putting them all at risk with 90 people attending. I am pleased to see the pressure from the media has forced our premier to finally go and get the Covid injection.

On a separate, but very important note, a resident phoned me and advised she had seen a blue ring octopus in the Pumicestone Passage in the vicinity of our iconic museum. Please be careful if you are swimming in that area.

Once again, please support our local businesses and shop local. They’re your friends, neighbours, family and they rely on you, the readers, to support them.

Dear Editor, Where is the Pumicestone elected member of the Queensland parliament?

Since being elected, it seems to me that the elected member has left the community wanting for the member to actually act for the community of Pumicestone.

There are many issues in the community that need to be addressed for and on behalf of the community. The measure of the elected member is determined by the desire and willingness of the elected member to stand up and push forward the communities’ wishes against the sometimes unwillingness and non-interest of state power to consult with the community.

The member must be able to display to the community if they are doing their job in representing the community. It does not matter what coloured shirt the member wears, the elected member must be asking themselves what can I do to help and support the electorate that has chosen me to represent them at the State level and not be bullied out of those community requirements. It is deceiving to the community for an elected member to make claim of delivering projects for the community when action was taken and won by previous elected

members, but, Politicians being Politicians, they cannot help themselves if the subject will show them in a good light to the electorate.

All issues raised by the community must be discussed in open and honest environment so that all members of the Pumicestone electorate have satisfaction that at least their concerns have been taken on board and considered by the member.

The community needs to have support for forward planning of raised concerns. Our electorate will not stand still and the community must partake in the forward planning due to the increase in population and their desire to access the electorate’s location.

The community cannot just close the doors to the island as there are businesses that depend on the shortterm and day-trippers to survive. This is a free country and people have the right to travel to places of high natural quality.

Just a few items the member needs to act, support and help the community with for forward planning would include the New Bribie Island Satellite Hospital, Bribie Island Road upgrade and new bridge in conjunction with the MBRC road infrastructure on the island, Camping permit approval limits, access to environmentally sensitive areas, capacity of electricity, water and sewage to handle the approved new developments, security and safety of the community, zoning of land for future development.

There are many ideas, opinions and desires in the community that will bring disagreement, but everyone is entitled to express these in a clear and constructive way. As a community we must face up to the challenges that present themselves in the short and long term for the future of the community of the Pumicestone electorate.

I encourage everyone to contact our local State member and ask her to accept our appointments or let the community know what are her plans for Pumicestone and what is her forward planning of our road infrastructure.

The health of a community/electorate is demonstrated by interest, action and communication of the elected member and the participation of the electorate with the member to reach a sensible community desired outcome for the community. The electorate needs to have community politics and not the coloured shirt “we know what’s best for you” policies over the community.

This writer has seen on Facebook the elected member asking for a senior’s morning tea recently. I submitted my request to attend and the day before the occasion, I was rung by the member’s office to advise me that they ran a ballot and I lost. Did anyone else in the electorate have the same

experience? It also appears that they did not want to tell anyone that the Queensland head of the member’s coloured shirt group would be attending.

What I have said can be argued by the loyal coloured shirt group, but is not being conveyed to the wider community and it is up to the elected member to ensure that all the electorate are communicated with. What has been done since the election for the electorate? What is the future of the electorate? The electorate cannot rely on the proposed, who knows when, hospital only.

Resident of Pumicestone Electorate (Name and address supplied) Dear Editor, After a genuine complaint was actioned by Moreton Bay Regional Council, the respondent’s reaction came by firing a shanghai with ball bearings at the complainant’s car, resulting in a smashed rear window, dents in paintwork, and three broken windows in the home.

Security cameras captured evidence, and the perpetrator was arrested.

So what did their repercussions accomplish? The embarrassment of being arrested, the humiliation of facing court, pleading ‘guilty’, and having to pay thousands of dollars in fines, restitution and legal fees; the shame of having a conviction on Police files, and the inconvenience of disrupted plans.

While the complainant tried to remain anonymous, this obviously cannot be guaranteed when making complaints to council, whether complaining through Councillors or online.

Clearly, having turned to her State member (who also sits on the Health and Environment Committee) for help under difficult circumstances, this constituent was entitled to better treatment than she appears to have received. Dear Editor, We have a housing and health crisis on Bribie Island and surrounds.

I am a single, disabled, over-50 woman who receives NDIS. I put in a high priority Housing Commission form as my circumstances had changed with the death of my housemate and friend who I have shared private rentals with for 12 and a half years, and the sale of the current property I am living in.

It’s been more than four and a half weeks and my application for social or public housing hasn’t been processed in the stated 3-week timeline.

I have 35 days to leave the property. I have nowhere to go.

I contacted Ali King’s office for help to hasten my application but was told by the office manager they would “ask” housing commission to see if they

Ask!!! Try advocating on a constituent’s behalf. Our state member needs to work a lot harder for the diversity of people who live in the area she represents.

I am trying to downsize the house from a 4 bedroom, setting up my newly acquired NDIS, and deal with the estate of my housemate, to a one bedroom unit in the Bribie and surrounds as my medical and social support are here.

Am I going to live in my car without the necessary disability equipment for me to manage my daily needs?

And what to do with my pet?

I expected much better representation than I am experiencing.

On the night of the 24th May I had a fall, something that I am prone to.

Previously, my housemate would ring the ambulance to pick me up off the floor and depending on my injuries I might end up in the hospital. This time, the second time I have fallen since my housemate passed away last month, I was on the tiled floor for over 3 hours. I would ring every hour, only to be told that the ambulance had been diverted to a high priority case.

I don’t resent the diversion but am wondering why there are not enough ambulances for our area, especially with the growing population in this region.

Finally, I managed to get up and cancelled the ambulance, but the whole experience has left me ashamed and shattered.

And this is compounded by the lack of empathy, compassion and action from our State Member, Ali King.

Federal Budget Aiming To Help Drive Local Economy Forward

The Federal Government’s 2021-22 Budget was handed down on May 11 and, as with every budget, there are winners and losers. With effects of COVID still influencing sectors of the economy the Federal Government is looking to stimulate spending and consumer confidence. Unfortunately, it is fair to assume COVID has also led to an increase in domestic violence, mental health issues and suicide.

Let’s start with The Winners: Personal Income Tax

Tax relief will be provided to around 65,000 taxpayers in the Longman electorate with up to $2,745 more in their pocket. This is due to the extension of the low and middle income tax offset to 2021-22, coupled with the decision to bring forward stage 2 of the Government’s tax relief plan. It is hoped that this tax relief leads to increased local spending to drive sectors like retail, tourism and hospitality.

Business

The budget also includes expanding the JobTrainer Fund that provides local opportunities for apprenticeships and traineeships. Wage subsidies to the tune of 50% are being provided to 170,000 new apprentices and trainees in addition to the 100,000 apprentices currently being supported. A major concern is our youth becoming long-term unemployed and by fostering growth in these areas it must be a good thing.

Asset write offs will continue to allow 14,700 Longman businesses to write off the full value of any eligible asset they purchase. Again, a tick for supporting local business and the flow-on effect to other industries such as machinery, vehicles and retail.

Home Ownership

First home buyers are facing challenging times with a growing market and increased competition from investors (more on that later) and interstate buyers. The First Home Super Save Scheme and the similar program for eligible single parents are initiatives to help those that would possibly have been ‘locked out’ of the market.

Aged Care, Mental Health and Childcare Probably the biggest winners. This budget provides the Federal Government with an opportunity to right some wrongs in relation to the treatment of the elderly and the failure of the aged care system.

The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety did get somewhat lost amongst the drama of COVID but the takeaway for many was that our elderly deserve better, and as a country we have been failing them with a failing system.

We must be better in this area. Make sure to read the full report and the 148 wide-ranging recommendations to get the full picture.

The Federal Government response includes an additional 80,000 Home Care Packages, in what they call a $17.7 billion package of support. Hopefully this will lead to a world-class system for our elderly, a reduction in wait times, zero abuse, improved care, staff satisfaction and more dignity for our elderly. Time will tell with this one as it has been in the ‘too hard basket’ for a long time. A national disgrace.

Childcare reforms will increase affordability for around 1,770 families living in Longman, opening the door for parents to return to the workforce or increase their hours. Read the fine print on this one with single child families to miss out on the savings. $2.3 billion has been committed to mental health care and suicide prevention, including more Headspace centres to support more young Australians, greater

access to psychiatrists, through Medicare and a new National Suicide Prevention Office. Mental health and suicide have been two of the ‘hidden’ effects of COVID so again we can only hope that this $2.3 billion really makes a difference to those in need.

Addressing Domestic Violence

Unfortunately, domestic violence continues to be an issue in society. A shout-out to Bribie Island’s own Hairdressers with Hearts here. Additional Government support is coming in the form of emergency accommodation, more legal assistance, counselling, and financial support. Again, we can only hope that this leads to zero deaths due to domestic violence, but instinct tells me that this is not enough.

These initiatives seem more concerned with ‘post’ domestic violence support.

The opportunity here was to focus on the ‘pre’ domestic violence through changes to laws, punishment and zero tolerance in relation to stalking and continued abuse.

A winner in terms of relative improvement but more needs to be done here.

Loss of life due to domestic violence is simply unacceptable. Too many lives have been lost.

Major Local Road Upgrades

Local roads will continue to be improved with $10 million to upgrade Bribie Island Road between Hickey Road and King John Creek. We can only hope this doesn’t cause the delays that the current State Government Roadworks have done at Old Toorbul Road. Are these the worst roadworks ever in terms of productivity and time lost for road users where $30 million has been spent and near daily traffic jams for 6 months? With the planned upgrade to Beachmere Road (State Government) and the new lights at Spinnaker Marina, hopefully that is all the roadworks we need until we get the new bridge.

Environment

The environment has not been forgotten, with $1.6 billion to fund priority protection technologies including clean hydrogen and energy storage and upgraded recycling capabilities.

Construction

It seems to be the Australian way to invest in construction to stimulate the economy. This budget flags $10 billion committed to infrastructure projects across Australia.

Womens’ Health

Cervical and breast screening programs boosted in addition to funding for endometriosis and reproductive health. Surely, we can do more to fight cancer and for early detection? Our fight against COVID has shown us what is possible. What if similar resources were to be put into fighting cancer? Just imagine.

Economic Recovery

Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young said, “This Budget is the next stage in securing Australia’s economic recovery from the pandemic.”

Yes it is exactly that, Terry. It is a positive step and we have seen personal income tax cuts, incentives for local businesses, new apprenticeship and training places, improved roads and mobile phone coverage and record funding for schools, hospitals, aged care, mental health and the NDIS. Overall, a budget that is driving the economy in the right direction after the damage caused by COVID. But there is always room for improvement and there are always losers.

So, where is the room for improvement?

Maybe that isn’t the best way to put it. It is more about implementing the systems and getting value out of these billions of dollars to get real life results. We can’t

continue stuffing up aged care, housing, NDIS and domestic violence. These areas are where we should be striving to be global leaders. Similarly, mental health and suicide. COVID has proven that things can happen, and that Governments can implement real change in real time.

So why can’t the same happen for other issues like those mentioned above?

And The Losers: Housing

Rental shortages, social housing, shelter. I have never heard of so many people about to be homeless, so many rental applications, rents increasing and so many people relocating. Schemes such as NRAS and social housing have not been game-changing in the past. $500 to rent a house is too much for many families. With supply and demand we are now at the point of $400 for a basic home. This requires an income of around $1000 per week to survive, taking into account other expenses. So roughly a $60,000 wage to scrape by with rent and costs of living.

Overseas Travel

Don’t hold your breath on this one. We are going to have to be happy enough to see Australia first and with crossing the ditch to New Zealand. Who knows what international travel will look like in 12 months?

Retirees

Low interest rates are great for home buyers and those with a mortgage but not so great for those like retirees who rely on interest to survive.

So, there’s a summary of the 2021/22 Federal Budget. How did you fare?

It seems like the general consensus is that people are doing it tough and need all the help they can get. This budget attempts to do that by throwing billions of dollars at a wide variety of issues and is basically trying to be everything to everybody.

You could argue there are no real losers apart from housing, which surely must be seriously addressed at some stage. It is a generous budget that will pump billions of dollars into the economy.

On the Federal Labor Party. The TAB has them paying $2.40 to win the next federal election with the Coalition at $1.55. I don’t think they will have many takers at $2.40.

Sorry but I just can’t see Anthony Albanese as the next Australian Prime Minister. Can you? Probably time for Labor to do some polling and to look at leadership alternatives to give a new leader some time before the next election.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is not without flaw and it would be great to see an opposition leader that can spice things up leading into the next election. Opposition parties seem too willing to simply go with the flow in these times and offer limited alternatives. This is said with last year’s State Election firmly in mind. Opposition parties need to provide an alternative or people will just go with what they know.

The real concern is how these billions of dollars will be spent, that it results in real change and that the money filters through to those in need such as aged care and NDIS, victims of domestic violence, those suffering from mental health issues, suicide prevention, the unemployed, the homeless and families doing it tough. This is the real challenge ahead: rebuilding broken systems and working through the bureaucracy to drive value and outcomes.

The implementation is where the success or failure will come from this budget.

Dear Editor, What has happened to medical care on Bribie ?

Recently a friend of mine was ill and tried to call her doctor on Bribie island. Her doctor doesn’t work on Thursday and Friday or Saturday and Sunday and no one could see her. She sent for an ambulance - a good idea ! Unfortunately, she had to wait two hours for one to come along. The paramedic was very good as paramedics are and suggested she might be better going to a doctor off the island.

I came to live on the island years ago and was impressed with the medical cover. However, over the years Bribie has grown and grown but it seems the ambulance situation and medical service has not grown with it. There used to be two ambulances on Bribie in the daytime and one at night.

Now there is one in the daytime and sometimes, but not often, one at night.

So, an increase in the population but a decrease in paramedics and ambulances.

Unfortunately, paramedics ( many of whom are working 12 to 14 hours without a break ) cannot prescribe for patients. It could be a urine infection which just needs antibiotics, but in the evening, there isn’t a doctor available to prescribe so the patient has to be taken to hospital in the one ambulance available. If then there is a serious emergency an ambulance and paramedics have to come from elsewhere, taking a few hours - time which could be critical.

Do Bribie Island residents know how bad this is ?

What can be done to correct this awful situation?

More ambulances.

More paramedics.

Better working hours.

Better training for new graduates.

More support from State and Federal members.

You might desperately need their help one day so it is in your interest to understand the situation. Let’s try and get better care for Bribie residents.

My letter was in response to the article the previous week where the journalist suggested First Avenue for a hospital. My response was “how ridiculous!”

No, I did not approach Ali King as it was a simple response to the article.

No misinformation and no political mischief. As a resident of Bribie, I too have experienced nothing but support from our elected representatives.

Voluntary Assisted Dying laws introduced to Queensland Parliament

Legislation to allow access to voluntary assisted dying in Queensland was introduced into Parliament last month.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill 2021 will now be scrutinised by the Health and Environment Parliamentary Committee, and will go through further public consultation.

“The path to this day has been long and considered, and paved with reverence and respect,” the Premier said.

“Many Queenslanders who have watched a loved one suffer feel passionately that there must be dignified options available to everyone.

“This bill delivers on an important election commitment I made to the people of Queensland.

“It provides a chain of safeguards to ensure only those at the end of life can make these choices, and then only those capable of making that choice for themselves.

“That is why we’re equally committed to delivering an additional $171 million investment in palliative care.

“At its heart this reform is about love and the dignity we all share and owe to each other.

“I urge all Queenslanders to ensure the utmost respect for other people and other points of view.”

“When the time comes, Government MPs will vote according to their conscience.”

Deputy Premier Steven Miles said the draft bill allows for Queenslanders nearing the end of their life to have greater choice about how, when and where they die.

“Voluntary assisted dying is not a choice between life and death, it’s a choice for those who are dying and wish to have more control over the time and circumstances of their death,” Mr Miles said.

“The draft legislation recognises that people’s autonomy and dignity should be respected when making end-of-life choices.

“I encourage all Queenslanders to read the report and engage with the Parliamentary committee process.”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the draft bill included safeguards to protect both those who seek to use voluntary assisted dying and medical practitioners and entities asked to participate in the process.

“These laws are being developed at the same time as we’re advancing our election commitment to invest $171 million to deliver more palliative care options across Queensland,” Ms D’Ath said.

“Under the draft laws, more than one medical opinion is needed. A person must have an eligible condition and decision-making capability.

“The draft bill also contains provisions for medical practitioners to conscientiously object.”

Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman thanked the Queensland Law Reform Commission for their work on the proposed legislation.

“The Commission has done extensive consultation with health practitioners, organisations, religious bodies, unions, legal bodies and members of the public,” the Attorney-General said.

“It is such an important piece of legislation for so many Queenslanders, it’s important we get it right.”

The Health and Environment Parliamentary Committee will have 12 weeks to undertake scrutiny of the bill and members of the public and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide submissions.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is calling on the community to share their local knowledge to help keep kangaroos and wallabies safe on Bribie Island roads.

With wildlife-vehicle collisions involving macropods doubling in recent years on the island, Mayor Peter Flannery said further action had to be taken.

“Council is looking to install additional green infrastructure at locations where we continue to see high wildlife-vehicle collisions,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Over the past 10 years, Council has received more than 300 community requests for the removal of deceased animals located on, or adjacent to, roads on Bribie Island.

“Sadly, more than two thirds of these collisions are relating to kangaroos and wallabies, with figures doubling from 24 collisions in 2018 to 54 collisions in 2019.

“We want to know if you have encountered a kangaroo or wallaby while driving on Bribie Island to add to our understanding of their movements and behaviour.

“But there is only so much we can do; we need drivers to slow down around wildlife areas and stay alert, especially as we see more kangaroos moving at dawn and dusk over winter.”

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said feedback received will help identify priority locations where infrastructure is needed.

“There is a range of green infrastructure that will be considered, from warning signs and road stencils to increased driver awareness, to fences, underpasses and rope bridges to discourage animals from crossing the road,” Cr Savige said.

“We would love the community’s help in identifying the best locations to install these safety measures, especially around well-known collision hotspots like White Patch Esplanade, Sunderland Drive and First Avenue.

“In fact, we are currently constructing two fauna crossings to create a safer passage for smaller wildlife over First Avenue and installing 400m of exclusion fencing.

However, it’s clear that more needs to be done.

Caboolture Medicinal Cannabis Grower Nearing First Harvest Several weeks ago we ran a story about local company Spring Sciences Australia (SSA) and the construction of their medicinal cannabis grow facility. Despite the recent rains, construction is progressing and the building will start to emerge above the treeline in the coming weeks. The stated aim is to be cultivating the company’s first crop before the end of the year with a first harvest some 8-9weeks later.

Whilst working on the completion of the facility, the company has not been letting weeds grow under their feet and they have been actively pursuing business deals to firm up the manufacturing and supply chain in order to move medicinal cannabis products into the Australian market.

One such deal has just been announced, with SSA confirming it has entered into a binding Letter of Intent with Bombay Hemp Company Ltd (Boheco) for the exclusive supply of the Boheco range of cannabis-derived products to the Australian market.

Boheco will, over time, bring the full Boheco product line to Australia under the SSA brand and explore an R&D platform for the development of new products for both the consumer and pharmaceutical markets.

The primary focus is on a holistic approach to general wellbeing derived from a healthy active lifestyle and balanced nutrition - an Active for Life philosophy. The agreement further develops SSA’s progressive development of bringing established cannabis-derived products to the Australian market and the development of a new range of infused products to cater for the rapidly expanding cannabinoid market.

The exact product line and the timing of their availability to the Australian market is yet to be decided but will include a range of products covering healthy nutrition, general wellness and personal care.

Beachmere’s Water Tower “Launched” Beachmere’s water tower was “launched” in style recently with Jana Dore from Unitywater and Mark Booth, Councillor for Division 2 joining the community to celebrate.

The team from Brightsiders, Steve and Jordan, painted the water tower and said it was the community support that made the Beachmere tower so special.

“A big thank you to all the Beachmere residents who cheered us on during this great project. All the encouragement helped us create the best artwork that we could. It takes a lot of energy to work on that level, all of the encouragement makes it that little bit easier”, they said.

Winner of First Prize was Jacob Watts, with his dad Rick, just one team of several families who built sandgardens and entered the competition.

The beautification of the water tower was just one of the commemorative items that the Beachmere Sesquicentenary Committee worked on for the community.

A quilt, mosaic pots and a lectern are all reminders of Beachmere’s Sesquicentenary Celebrations with, perhaps, the water tower being the biggest and most visible.

Beachmere was a major destination for entire families as early as the 1920s, when people would travel to the beach to build sandgardens and enter the competitions held by major newspapers at the time.

This trend continued and several families entered entries in the most recent competition as part of the belated Sesquicentenary Celebrations.

Sandgardens must, of course, be built on the beach; must be no more than one metre square, generally include geometric shapes and use natural materials such as shells, cuttlefish and small driftwood pieces.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Why should we, the readers of this fine publication, be treated like second class citizens for twelve months of the year and have our lives turned upside down – especially when those ‘cockroaches’ who live south of the border turn their clocks forward by 60 minutes when 30 minutes would be sufficient.

It’s not only us that get this treatment – it is all our fellow Queenslanders who live between Yeppoon and the NSW border. In all, 44% of our national population is domiciled in the sector east of ‘GMT plus 10 hours’. Nearly eleven million Australians including the two state capitals – Brisbane and Sydney – are affected by this anomaly.

What we have to cop is confusing, it’s unaffordable and can easily be corrected if only our politicians would stop for a moment and consider the obvious. It’s something that Queensland can embrace.

All those of us in the Pumicestone electorate, especially those who voted ALP last October, should contact the new parliamentary representative – Ph 3474 2100 - and demand at least a conversation that will address this chaotic circumstance – especially as there is a very practical and workable solution. Cranky Lizard also rushes to declare that the Chinese people, the vast millions of them, are not hostile to Australia or any other nation for that matter.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China; the Chinese Communist Party, is hostile to Australia because we have not, and apparently will not, succumb to their wishes regarding the use of various telecommunication systems, think Huawei, and we were one of the first nations to call for an open international inquiry into the origins of the COVID-19 virus.

This malignant little beast was developed in Chinese Government laboratories in the city of Wuhan in China- and through a mistake, or negligence, or a combination of both, this vile little form of life was unleashed on the World.

Cranky Lizard does not suggest that this virus was deliberately unleashed on the World by the Chinese Government – no Sir!

Cranky Lizard suggests that a terrible mistake occurred, and the Chinese Communist Party, unable to accept or admit to mistakes threw a web of deception and lies over the origins of COVID-19 – and still does, to this day.

The escape of this virus into the four corners of the Earth has caused great embarrassment to the Chinese Communist Party; they have lost face on a global scale.

And, many of their subsequent actions can be directly attributed to the ferocious anger generated by their loss of global face.

But the reality of current Chinese attitudes to the rest of the World can be directly traced back to the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party in October 2017. At that Congress, China shifted to a more assertive, even aggressive, foreign policy.

Put simply, the reason why our relationship with China has changed is that China has changed.

Cranky Lizard observes that Australia has been blindsided by this change; our wealth, our geography and our powerful alliances have dulled our senses and have led us into a garden of soft and colourful deception.

Cranky Lizard asks – “Where are we now, approaching mid-2021, as far as our strategic situation is concerned according to our geography? “ Well…it is pretty apparent that we, as a sovereign nation, are much more vulnerable now than we have ever been since World War II.

We are not facing an invasion of troops from any nation; that is not the situation. But, we are economically vulnerable to China, our merchant shipping is virtually controlled by China, our strategic reserves of energy, which are needed to drive the sinews of our Nation, are held in another country and we are just pricking up our defence ears as we begin to hear the faint beat of the drums of war!

Cranky Lizard is aware, as most of you should be that the World today, as we observe it, is politically unstable, and many significant events are unpredictable.

Western democracies are consumed with the nonsense of internal political struggles about their history; their social spectrums are speckled with blots of hysteria about communal perceptions of each other’s role in our society: we are, all of us, bordering upon self-indulgent harm.

Current Federal Government actions are positive in addressing these matters.

Legislation has been enacted which directly targets foreign interference; we have lifted our profile within the Five Eyes intelligence community. We have initiated and assiduously pursued a new quadrilateral alliance with powerful, democratic economies in our region, which are also affected by the developing assertiveness and aggression of China. Those nations are Japan and India.

Fundamentally we are watching a competition between systems governing human beings. Autocratic communism versus liberal democracies and is a competition which has been constant for many years commencing in 1917 with the establishment of communism in Russia.

For the most part, the liberal democracies have been successful because human beings do not like being regimented, directed, controlled or herded into economic, social and intellectual deserts.

And Cranky Lizard points out that the creation of the deserts mentioned above is the direct result of the application of socialism/communism.

Although it is necessary, for the sake of balance, to note that Communist China has achieved remarkable economic success in the past two decades – a success founded more upon the intellectual capacity of the Chinese people and their determination to drag themselves from social and economic poverty rather than the application of socialist/communist dogma.

Nevertheless, the achievements of the People’s Republic of China are remarkable.

The Chinese Communist Party has stated that the integration of the independent democracy of Taiwan into the Chinese People’s Republic is not negotiable and that, if necessary, they will take it by force of arms.

And that intention places Australia in a direct line of potential conflict with the People’s Republic because we have clear lines of military alliances. In the event of Chinese military action against Taiwan, those alliances will be applied, and Australia will be expected to contribute in any number of ways.

Cranky Lizard points out that Taiwan has never actually belonged to China; its history dates back into the mists of time as never seen as part of the Chinese mainland Government, or, for that matter, the Chinese people. Taiwan became important to the Chinese Communists because the defeated remnants of Chiang Kai Chek’s army and Government retreated to Taiwan in 1949, when the Communists forces of Mao Tse Tung arrived, panting and surprised, into an empty Beijing.

So, Xi Jing Ping is simply applying an old principle to a modern world. Today’s Taiwan has nothing to do with the defeated remnants of Chiang Kai Chek – but Communist dogma will never accept that – never! And they will fight over this principle if they have to.

Cranky Lizard can say, with certainty, that if Xi Jing Ping assesses that the military cost, to the People’s Republic of China, in treasure, lives and social disruption, to attack Taiwan, is so great that it is not worth the effort, then he will hesitate.

Nothing else will stop him.

Therefore, in our region, the Pacific, Australia’s future peaceful development depends upon our ability to be agile enough to create a National force of deterrence of such lethality, that any military adventures in our region are not worth the cost.

Cranky Lizard asks: are we doing that?

And, the answer is a qualified Yes. Which illustrates the point of the Latin phrase at the beginning of this article…

Government to Act on First Responders Safety

The Palaszczuk Government has announced it will soon start detailed consultation into how Queensland can better protect the safety of first responders from passing motorists.

The government committed during the 2020 election to undertake the policy review, which is expected to be completed later this year.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey made the announcement during National Road Safety Week and said the government will work closely with first responders and peak industry bodies like RACQ. “Police officers, paramedics, fire and emergency services crews, and traffic response units are all there for us when traffic crashes and other incidents occur,” Mr Bailey said.

“Their workplace is often by the side of the road, and it is critical they and the people they help are protected.

“This consultation process will inform possible new or amended road rules for government consideration, along with possible improvements to driver education, safety campaigns and traffic management solutions to help keep our first responders safe.

“We have worked closely with emergency services and RACQ to educate drivers on the importance of moving over, slowing down and giving responders the space to do their work safely – and we’ll work with them closely as part of this consultation process.

“More than 70 percent of our on-road workers tell us they experience a nearmiss anywhere from once a year, up to 10 or more times,” Mr Toms said.

“Our staff often have vehicles passing at 80 to 110km/h, just centimetres away, and being struck at that speed would almost certainly result in death or life-altering injury, and its scary to think it’s just a

Bribie Overlooked in Bus Transport Technology Rollout

The world’s population has grown and continues to grow at an exponential rate.

As we reach a world population of almost 8 billion people, we now face a number of issues that we must collectively endeavour to find solutions to. World Population Day, July 11, is the day dedicated by the United Nations to our growing population and the subsequent issues associated with ever-expanding growth.

Bus services elsewhere in Queensland far better than locally.

Bribie Island and surrounds badly need a revamp of its bus transport routes and timetable. This is self-evident due to the number of empty buses seen travelling around our roads. It is also obvious to bus users who can’t get where they want to go easily in a reasonable time frame and therefore drive.

It’s a vicious circle; if the service isn’t effective people don’t use it and if people don’t use it then it can’t pay for itself or improvements to the service. This is where the state Department of Transport has forgotten us as we haven’t got technologies used in many other areas to improve bus and transport services and integrate taxis into the transport system.

Here are two case studies that could be applied here: Study 1: Demand Responsive Transport: (excerpt from Translink’s website) Demand Responsive Transport (DRT) is a flexible shared transport option used in the Logan City area, designed to bring together people who live near one another and want to travel at the same time in places or at times when buses and trains aren’t available.

With DRT you can pre-book a vehicle to pick you up near your home and take you to selected local shopping and community facilities and transport hubs such as your local bus or train station.

How does it work?

DRT is simple: • You register and book your trip in advance by downloading the MyDRTLogan app, booking online or calling 13 11 90 • We find other people in your area who want to travel at around the same time • We pick you all up near your homes • You pay a standard low fare no matter how far you travel • We drop you all off at your chosen destination, in time to catch your bus or train or make your appointment.

By matching vehicles and travel timetables with actual demand, DRT offers a more efficient way to provide transport for people living in areas that may be lacking public transport services.

Where can I go with DRT?

You can use DRT to travel to your local bus and train stations, to connect with other TransLink services, and selected local facilities, such as shopping centres, medical centres and libraries.

Study 2: Kan-go: (excerpt from Translink’s website and ‘Bus News’ webpage) The Kan-go service is a partially demand-responsive service (roam zone) and a partially fixed-route service operating in Toowoomba and Hervey Bay. The Toowoomba fixed route is between the Range Shopping Centre, St Vincent’s

Hospital and Toowoomba City (Grand Central), and operates the same as any other bus service with designated stops and passengers can get on or off at any of these stops.

The roam zone allows passengers to be picked up at variable locations and dropped along the fixed route, or alternatively, picked up along the fixed route and dropped at variable locations. (Note it doesn’t allow for pick up and drop off in the roam zone).

In 2008 Hervey Bay’s innovative Kan Go flexible bus service breezed through its 12-month trial and has been continued.

After his visit to Hervey Bay in 2008, the then Transport Minister announced “smart bus” had boosted patronage on its route by 45 percent in its first year.

“Kan Go is a wonderful new service for Hervey Bay, and the local community has embraced it, so it will be continued,” he says.

“And the smart bus is set to get even smarter, with an investigation underway to enable people to book the bus by SMS or on the web. We hope to have those systems in place later this year, but for now people still need to ring to make a booking.

“Kan Go has been especially popular among older passengers because of the flexibility it has to pick them up and deliver them to their own homes,” he said.

Kan Go uses state-of-the-art technology developed in Queensland to direct the driver by GPS to pre-booked pick up sites, such as private homes.

It provides 11 weekday and Saturday return trips between Point Vernon and Centro via Pialba and the City Loop.

For 25 percent of its route – around the City Loop – it is a normal fixed route bus, but once it leaves the city it becomes a flexible service that can take people to their homes. A computer determines the best route from bookings made by passengers and delivers that information to the driver while the bus is on its way.

It’s popular because this bus comes to the people, rather than the other way around. It’s a real boon to people who have mobility problems.

Kan Go has also brought a bus service to new housing estates that previously had no service. It serves an average 64 passengers each day, with up to 90 on Thursdays and Fridays, compared with only 40 daily for the fixed route service it replaced. In a passenger survey, 81 percent of respondents said they preferred Kan Go to the fixed route service it replaced.

So if Toowoomba, Hervey Bay and Logan City have been worthy of this service for the last 13 years why hasn’t it been rolled out here? Local residents are reporting that they are taking one hour twenty minutes to get to U3A from Ningi while other buses are circling the island empty.

U3A has 3000 participants and would be perfect for a demand-driven service as classes start and finish around the same times.

This is a state government responsibility which they are paying little attention to.

Must we always have to ask to be included in programs that have been standard elsewhere for a decade?

As to be expected, COVID-19 has been flagged by the UN as one of the biggest threats faced by the global population for both 2021 and the foreseeable future.

Other issues recognised include climate change, poverty and access to health care.

In promoting this day, governments and organisations hope to raise awareness and encourage international unity.

It has been recognised by many indicators, such as the Sustainability Development Goals, that solving these problems will only be achieved through global cooperation. Specifically, this year, division, rising tensions and uncertainty have created a less unified community.

With the news often bombarding us with stories of negative circumstances it is very easy to become desensitised to problems faced around the globe, particularly if they do not directly impact ourselves. Not only does this Day promote self-awareness but also a wider understanding of how our individual actions can affect others. However, it is important to also recognise that not all growth is negative - often it brings the promise of development and expansion.

Take Bribie for example. With recent rises in our population capita, we have seen the progression of infrastructure and businesses around our community. We have viewed the expansion of schools, restaurants and increases in tourist numbers. If properly understood and the appropriate resources are allocated, population growth can be achieved in a productive and positive way.

For us in Australia, population expansion is a result almost solely due to migration. As our country supports an older population we rely heavily on international travel and migration to ensure growth. It is yet another factor we have faced during the pandemic. Evidently, population growth holds both positive and negative aspects for a community, country and internationally but also helps push for innovation and creation.

In efforts to balance the environment with living needs, many new builds consider the environmental impacts and include amenities such as solar energy. These ideas are being implemented from cities to coasts, aiming to create a more sustainable relationship between expanding populations and the needs of the Earth.

Ultimately, World Population Day promotes fostering relationships across the globe to help solve problems that impact us all.

We must endeavour to find an achievable relationship between ever-expanding numbers of people and the protection of the environment. Unity remains an important key.

Speaking the Truth in Public Life

This article is not about trashing the roles of ‘ media advisors ‘ – rather, it is about the philosophy that requires political statements and announcements to be ‘ spun ‘ to achieve what is supposedly the ‘ right ‘ effect. Whatever the hell that means?

How many public figures, politicians, celebrities, corporate leaders and media personalities have been undone in their public life when they are caught out telling lies, hiding the truth or puffing smoke about the place in an attempt to distract attention from the truth or the facts?

I say there have been plenty.

We read about it every day, or we watch it on our television screens, but it still goes on and on and on and on!

Why? Why are they not able to learn.

There seems to exist an irrational, internal fear of telling the media the truth.

Some years ago, in another life, I was CEO of a large public enterprise; on my second day in the role, I was approached by one of my colleagues who wanted to know which media advisor I wanted to appoint to assist me with the media.

The following day, at a meeting of all my senior executive colleagues, I announced that I would not need a media advisor.

Shocked silence.

It appeared as if I had announced that I had two heads! “ What will you do? “ one of them said in a hushed voice.

I replied that I would tell the media what was happening, why it was happening, who made it happen and what it means when it does happen.

More shocked silence. “ What tell them the truth ? “ my deputy questioned.

“ Yep. “ I said. “ Jeeez. “ they all said.

The implication was clear; if you tell the media the truth, they will twist it to suit their agenda.

We then had several sessions on why it was to our advantage to tell the media the truth, never speak off the cuff or the record.

Record everything if the contact is oral and keep written records of everything you say and release, in the form it is released.

So, that is what I did to manage the truth in a very public forum.

Let us, therefore, look at the most public of forums, the world of Australian politics.

There are three levels of Government in Australia. Local Government – Councils and Shires etc., State and Territory Governments and the Commonwealth Government.

Australia is heavily over-governed, and that fact alone mitigates for an open and truthful communication channel between the various elected persons and the electorates they represent.

But, that does not happen. It should, but it does not!

Most elected persons these days have administrative support staff funded by us…

Numbered amongst those support staff are “ media advisors.”

These are usually young people, in their late twenties or early thirties, holding tertiary degrees of education in ‘ Com-

munications & Journalism.’ Or ‘ Arts And Communications.’ Or ‘ Media Studies & Communication.’ And so on. I am sure you get the picture.

Well, what do these advisors do?

Job descriptions vary. The general idea seems to be that these young people are there, in the political stream, to provide expertise on how ‘ to spin ‘ the political stories of the day.

And, this is where I become curious.

Politics, elections, candidates and the mechanics of managing political campaigns have been part of my life for many years.

I have been involved in great political success stories, and great political train smashes; neither of them is anything like they are made out to be…

Where I have had influence, and that has not been on many occasions, but where I have, I have always pursued the idea of telling the truth to the electorate.

If a programme stuffs up, or a person makes a mistake, then say so! Tell the people who are paying your wages and the wages of your staff the truth! Tell them what happened and why!

It is the idea that political stories and announcements need ‘ spin ‘ that I challenge.

Politics in Australia is about governing the communities in which we live. It is not a game; it a bloody serious business. It is the most serious business in town – and it is about power!

Once you mix human beings and power, any number of weird tunes begin to play.

It is evident that the idea of ‘ spinning ‘

political stories is about maintaining a position of political power – not about maintaining good government – but about maintaining political power.

This is not a universal conclusion, I know politicians who bring the highest standards of integrity to the role and assiduously protect those standards.

But almost every political office has a ‘ spin doctor ‘, and it is the ‘ spin doctor ‘ who often decides what is said, how it is said and to whom it is said.

I ask why?

Most of them have not lived long enough to have had any challenging life experiences; that is not their fault; it is a matter of biology.

How can they be advisors to elected men and women who have toughed out an election, placed their integrity and personal life into the public forum?

Recent events in Canberra have made it quite clear, to even the most casual observer, that the idea of advisors and Ministerial Assistants has become a burden on the Parliament and both sides of the political spectrum.

I think that the ‘ system ‘ has become the tail wagging the dog.

The secret, if there needs to be a secret, to remaining elected in any public office is to provide the people who vote for you the results they expect.

And that is a good, open and honest government.

You simply cannot have that, if you have a system full of ‘ spin doctors ‘ who twist and dilute political announcements to suit the story of the day.

In my opinion, in politics, the only, the best, the most vital story of the day is the TRUTH !

Simple. The End!

Winner of Last Month’s QLD Car Sales & Detailing Volunteer Award

Wes from QLD Car Sales & Detailing would like to thank all our readers who emailed him their nominations for the Volunteer Giving Back to the Community Award .

Issue 63 Winner was Barbara Woodroffe, nominated by Helen Murphy. Barb is the current president of U3A Beachmere. She is also a member of the Beachmere Car Club.

“Stop the blame game Treasurer” The Queensland government must stop complaining and start doing some heavy lifting to get the state’s economy back on track”. Shadow Treasurer David Janetzki said.

Queenslanders needed a vision and a way forward for the state in a post COVID-19 economic environment.

“All Treasurer Cameron Dick does is blame others,” he said.

Mr Janetzki said the state’s Treasurer should be looking to fast-track infrastructure and develop productivity measures that would drive the Queensland economy. CommSec has Queensland last in the nation for economic growth.

“It’s time for Cameron Dick and the Queensland government to put its money on the table to deliver for Queensland,” he said.

“The Palaszczuk government has had the last six years to create an infrastructure program to cater for Queensland’s growing population and they’ve failed to deliver.”

Shadow Finance Minister Jarrod Bleijie said it was typical for the state’s Treasurer to cry poor and blame Canberra ahead of the Federal Budget.

“If the state’s Treasurer wants to know who is to blame for a bad State

Budget that he is going to deliver, he only needs to look in the mirror or look to his left, or look to his right in the Cabinet room. It’s the state Cabinet Ministers that have made the decisions,” he said.

“It’s about time the state government actually invested and put the money into infrastructure that Queenslanders so desperately need.

Let’s bust city congestion and get people in regional Queensland driving on the best roads we can in Australia.

“All we’re seeing from the state government is blame, blame, blame.

The only ones to blame is Annastacia Palaszczuk and Cameron Dick because they’re the ones who’ve failed to deliver and who’ve failed to have the plans to deliver for the people of Queensland.”

Thinking of Living in a Manufactured Home Park?

Development of manufactured homes (MH) and residential parks is increasingly becoming a lucrative venture for Queensland property developers and an option for senior Australians. Today, manufactured homes are often established as “Over 50’s Resort Style Living”.

Knowing what you can and cannot do, what avenues are available to you to address any illegal or unfair actions by the Park Managers / Owners is where the Manufactured Home Owners Association Inc. can assist.

Many people considering this type of living do not understand the many issues related to this type of home, and the Manufactured Home Owners Association Inc. recommends you do your research prior to making a decision and speak with experienced local people who can explain some important considerations.

For example: •

The home site is owned by the Park Owner/s; the homes are considered to be chattels and cannot be borrowed against.

The park owners charge weekly site fees for each home owner. The average site fee for the majority of new parks at present is approx. $180 per week and this usually will rise each year. There can be many hidden costs in these fees and all residents should ensure they view a copy of the yearly financial documents of their park which should be made available by the Park Owner each time there is to be a site increase, or as a resident you can ask to see them anytime.

These agreements are usually standard format and park owners will add certain items that may not be standard and must not come under the “prohibited terms” stated in the Act. There are few solicitors that have a good working knowledge of these contracts, so it is “buyer beware”, and you should think long and hard whether you can live with fewer individual rights and less say on your daily living.

Once you have signed up, you cannot change anything unless you can prove it

is illegal.

If you wish to sell your home, your site agreement will have rules that the park owner will have you abide by. One rule in most parks is that you cannot put a ‘For Sale’ sign outside your home as the land is not yours. Some will say they do not allow private agents to come on site; this is not legal, but many people can feel intimidated by the management when pushing for their rights.

BE PREPARED - POO DOES HAPPEN!

Every morning and evening we walk our dogs. We have no choice in the matter, being rescued Greyhounds they’re experts at “hounding” us until we take them for their walk.

We are accountable to our furkids, they know it, we know it, and so we go walkies!

Leads are attached to prancing hounds, and always, yes ALWAYS four doggy doo bags - 2 for each dog - just in case - go into our pockets.

You know I’m a total dog lover, any shape, size and type, yet every night I’m disgusted by the doggy doos piles left lying around by lazy, unprepared dog owners. Surely they know that the chances of a doggy “present pile” happening on a walk is 153.7% so why don’t they take doo bags with them? And why don’t these owners feel accountable for these piles? It’s probably because no one knows who leaves them behind.

But what does my disgust with poo piles have to do with being a Personal Trainer? Well, weird as it is, carrying doggy doo bags is really the same as having a plan to stay fit and healthy. If you aren’t prepared, poo will happen and someone else will be left to deal with your mess.

What tends to happen is one day you suddenly realise if you don’t

do something NOW then poo will happen in your life. Usually it’s because you are told by your health professional that you will lose the ability to live the life you want to if you don’t make changes and that someone else will be left to clean up your mess.

So you panic and without a plan go for a walk, without taking a bottle of water, wearing an old pair of shoes or even worse thongs, walking for “a while”. You do this once because that day you had time. The next day your legs are a bit achy so you skip the next four weeks till your legs “recover”.

By now what your GP told you doesn’t seem that important, and you don’t want achy legs again.

Strangely, even after all this effort “being fit and healthy” your health issues don’t improve and now your clothes are mysteriously shrinking.

You can’t understand why nothing is changing even though you have changed nothing in your lifestyle.

You haven’t put aside exercise times each week. You haven’t got the right shoes for walking and you have no idea how far you should go. You feel frustrated, uncomfortable and glad you didn’t tell anyone because it would be

Lie with both legs flat and with your head supported by your pillow. Keep your toes pointed toward the ceiling. Move one leg out to the side as far as is comfortably possible. Slowly return to the starting position and relax. Repeat with other leg – again only to a position that is comfortable for this leg. Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest (You can place a towel or pillow between your legs if you wish but this is not necessary)

STRAIGHT KNEE LIFT

Lie with both knees bent and with your head supported by your pillow and your hands by your sides. Keeping your buttocks on the bed, slowly straighten one leg as straight as is comfortable for you. Slowly return foot to the bed and repeat with other leg. Only do as many each side as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

Having a fitness plan and a goal ensures you achieve the results you want. If you don’t know what you want to achieve then how do you know you’ve achieved it? If you don’t have a goal then how do you make a plan that will get you to your end result?

If you’re going caravaning then you have a plan. You know what to pack to have the right clothes for each situation, you know when to leave so you reach where you’re going on time, how far to travel each day, when you’ll need to refuel your car and where the servos are that have the right fuel.

Yet people starting out on a fitness journey tend to think that they won’t need a plan on what to wear, when to fit the exercise into their day, what to eat and where to get it.

Knowing what you can safely do, especially if you have health issues, is definitely number one on the must do list. Check with your health professional, a good GP these days will encourage exercise at a level that’s right for you. If you need to be motivated to start then consider a registered Personal Trainer. Please understand that a good Personal Trainer will NEVER flog you till you drop!!! They should work with you and your issues to ensure that you become fitter and healthier safely.

plan to succeed. If you try and “find time” it’s never going to happen.

There will always be something that seems more important and suddenly another month has past and you still haven’t started.

The reason we have our clients book into our circuit classes is so they know they are expected in that class. If they aren’t here on time we phone them to see where they are, so they are accountable and also to check they’re okay.

Being accountable is number three on the “must do” list to make your fitness plan work. If you can, exercise with someone, because for some weird reason we will let ourselves down but not let someone else down.

No one can force you to exercise or eat well, no one can do it for you.

You must decide if your health is important enough to become a priority in your life. But please know that when poo randomly does appear, those who take time to look after their health will always be better prepared for any situation, and if you need someone to help you find what you need, we are here, like someone with a pocketful of bags.

Walters Backs Qld For Win in Pie of Origin Contest

At this time every year, Origin Great Kerrod Walters pulls on the Mighty Maroon and bakers at pie-makers Beefy’s do the same. And it’s all for the kids at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.

“It’s always tough for the kids at the hospital, but last year was even tougher,” says Beefy’s Mark Hobbs.

“That’s why this year it’s even more important that we pull on the Mighty Maroon and raise funds for much-needed equipment at the hospital as part of the Pie of Origin.”

“The contest sees Beefy’s go head-tohead against NSW’s Glenorie Bakery to out-bake and out-fundraise them,” says Kerrod. “I’m backing Queensland for the win, of course, but it’s the kids in hospital who are the real winners in all of this.”

It’s Beefy’s sixth year as part of the Pie of Origin contest, and during that time the family-owned Queensland bakery has raised almost $100,000 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, thanks to the support of their customers.

“This year the question is – how high can we go?” says Mark. “We’re all set to break the $100,000 barrier, but what will our total be?”

“If we raise more than Glenorie Bakery, we’ll come home champions – just like Queensland did last year in the State of Origin.” The Pie of Origin

FABULOUS ART Coming to Beachmere Local artists are busily making plans to enter their work in the next Fabulous Art Beachmere (FAB) Exhibition in August.

This biennial Exhibition, for both 2D and 3D works, is always well-supported by artists, photographers and crafters who submit paintings, sculptures, mosaics, craft and all manner of objects.

FAB has been growing over the past six years and, once again, looks like being well supported by the art and local community, this year revelling in its new Gallery space at The Hub, Main St, Beachmere.

Recently used as a “pop up” Gallery for the Liz Heber Retrospective, the venue was a great success, utilising a recently installed art hanging system.

Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) produce the Exhibition and, after the recent success of the Back to Beachmere Celebrations, are confident in mounting a “Fabulous” Exhibition and associated artist events.

During that time, $1 from every Beefy’s Big Queenslander Pie sold goes to Beefy’s fundraising tally and the money goes to the Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Another $10m For Bribie Island Road Upgrade

Residents, visitors and other regular users of the only road linking Bribie Island with the rest of Australia have welcomed the Federal Government’s Budget commitment of $10 million towards the upgrade of Bribie Island Rd between Hickey Rd and King John Creek, matching the State Government’s previously-announced $11 million contribution.

Both State member for Pumicestone Ali King and Federal member for Longman Terry Young agree this is good news for their constituencies, although in recent social media postings Ms King has been critical of the Federal Government for not making their contribution available until closer to the start of work on this section, scheduled in the Bribie Island Rd QLD TMR Masterplan for between 2024 and 2029, a project for which, without any foundation, she now appears to be taking personal credit. In a recent Facebook post she said “Last week I spoke about my $11 million project to dual lane Bribie Island Rd from Hickey Rd to King John Creek”, despite the fact that it was announced

by State government in 2019 - a full year before she was elected.

In her State Parliament speech in May she also said “I’m glad the Feds have chipped in $10m but disappointed we won’t get most of that funding until 2026 ‘onwards’.”

In fact, Mr Terry Young has already said he is “more than happy” to speak to the Minister about trying to get it brought forward if the State Government required it.

“There has been some conjecture over

when work on the latest upgrade to Bribie Island Road will begin so I thought I’d clear it up,” he told The LOCAL News.

“This upgrade is part of the State Government’s Bribie Island Rd Strategy which you can find on Transport and Main Roads’ website.

“This Strategy, which was released in 2019, includes 10 stages of upgrades for the State controlled road, including the upgrade at Old Toorbul Point Rd which is currently under way.

“The Hickey Rd - King Johns Creek upgrade is included as Stage 6 of the strategy and has a 5-10 year timeline.

“Based on this State Government timeline, construction on the project would begin some time between 2024 and 2029.

“The State Government, in its own Budget submission to the Federal Government, flagged construction on this project to begin in early 2025”.

“If the State Government requires the funding sooner, then I am more than happy to speak with the Minister to try and get it brought forward,“ he added.

“I’m delighted that the Federal Government has contributed $10 million towards this project.

“This is a significant upgrade and along with improvements at Old Toorbul Point Rd, it will help reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and support local jobs during its construction.”

Bikeways No Place for Cars

If you drove your car down a bike path adjacent to a road people would think you had gone mad, Police would be called and a ticket issued. As a result, it simply doesn’t happen here and rightly so as safety is a top priority.

How then is it so common to see bicycle riders on busy roads just feet from bike paths? Why do they do it? Why do we invest in bike paths only to be put in danger by bikes on roads? I don’t have the answer and the law allows it. This should change.

Motorists must stay wide of bicycle riders by giving a minimum clearance of: 1.0 m when passing a bicycle rider in a 60 km/h or less speed zone or 1.5m where the speed limit is over 60 km/h.

If you want to pass two bicycle riders that are riding next to each other, the minimum passing distance applies to the bicycle rider closest to the right. It is legal

for two bicycle riders to ride side-by-side on a road, as long as they are not more than 1.5 m apart. I’d say that would put your car in the scrub on many local roads.

Take a busy road like First Avenue on the section taking you to Woorim near the cemetery. Two cars need to pass at 80 km per hour, a combined potential head-on impact of 160 kmph. The law says that a car must pass a bicycle also on that road giving 1.5 metres of clearance. That puts Car A on the wrong side of the road and in a collision path with Car B coming the other way.

So, what to do: Option 1: Give the 1.5 metres clearance and cross on to the wrong side of the road, putting yourself and others at risk and at fault in the event of a collision.

Option 2: Pass the bicycle without giving the full 1.5 metres of clearance, endanger the bike rider and break the law.

Option 3: Drive to Woorim at 30 kmph until it’s safe to pass on the wrong side.

Not the best of options the lawmakers of Queensland have left us with. However, there should be another option: Option 4: Cyclist uses the purpose-built bike path to Woorim.

I can hear the howls from some of the Lycra brigade as I type, but plenty of cyclists do use the bike paths. Let’s send a big thank you to those cyclists using the paths rather than the roads. We appreciate you doing the safe and sensible thing.

Claiming your car for taking bulky items to work must be as per your logbook. The cents per kilometre up to 5000 km is the general way to claim. No dockets are required for this method. Using your car for more than 5000 work related kilometres, then the % is calculated and applied to all your running costs. Dockets for fuel, repairs, insurance and registration will be used for this calculation, together with your log book for the work use.

Other expenses that may be appropriate for you include union fees, memberships, uniform or protective clothing, home office use working from home being internet, electricity, computer, and your telephone. Any expenses provided or reimbursed by your employer are not claimable.

If you have a rental, information is required for the rent received, and the expenses being rates, water, commission, repairs, and interest on any loan for the property. In having

a property manager, they will issue an annual rental statement for you to use. Travel to and from the property to check on it is no longer available so becomes part of private use in your log book.

Don’t forget to bring your bank details if you anticipate a refund or to make sure that the details haven’t changed from last year.

$16.4 million to improve mobile connectivity on the urban fringe

Poor mobile coverage has been a big issue in Longman for some time and something Terry has worked hard to address. A recent telecommunications forum in Caboolture Terry hosted with special guest Communications Minister Paul Fletcher.

Bushfire-prone areas on the outskirts of our major cities will be better connected through the Morrison Government’s $16.4 million Peri-Urban Mobile Program (PUMP), to be unveiled in the 2020-21 Budget.

Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, said PUMP will improve mobile connectivity for communities in bushfire-prone areas along the edges of Australia’s major cities.

“Improving coverage on the peri-urban fringe will help communities access vital information during emergencies, seek help if needed and stay in touched with loved ones,” Minister Fletcher said.

“PUMP will also improve the quality and reliability of available mobile services, providing benefits on a day-to-day basis for those living and working in these communities.”

Through PUMP, the Government will provide grant funding to mobile network operators and infrastructure providers to deploy new mobile phone infrastructure to improve mobile reception and coverage in peri-urban areas.

Member for Longman Terry Young said the announcement is great news for people in peri-urban areas of Longman that have long been plagued by poor mobile coverage.

“It will open the door for new mobile infrastructure to improve service in areas like Wamuran which have been caught in

“Recently I held a community forum with Minister Fletcher and the message was loud and clear: mobile service in parts of Longman is simply not good enough. “I congratulate the Minister for listening to our concerns and coming up with a solution for people who live in peri-urban areas in Longman and around Australia.”

The Program will run a competitive assessment process to provide funding to assist the deployment of new and improved mobile infrastructure.

This infrastructure will address identified quality of service and reception issues in targeted areas. All applications will

be competitively assessed on a solution by solution basis with funding awarded based on the coverage outcomes provided by each solution.

“We will continue to invest in targeted programs that improve mobile connectivity across the country to match our increasing reliance on mobile phones, both in an emergency and our day-to- day lives,” Minister Fletcher said.

“This new Program will complement the highly successful Mobile Black Spot Program, which is delivering new mobile coverage across regional and remote Australia.”

Courts can now order that certain hardcore youth offenders are to be fitted with GPS devices as a condition of bail in the latest instalment of the Palaszczuk Government’s crackdown on youth crime, with Moreton selected as one of the five areas for the initial trial.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said government’s suite of strong new Youth Justice reforms are specifically designed to target hardcore recidivist offenders.

“This trial of GPS monitoring devices gives police and the courts another tool to target the small minority that commit the majority of offences,” the Minister said.

“Courts will be able to order 16 to17-yearolds to wear GPS devices if they are given bail, providing an extra layer of security and increased safety for the community.

“The devices will be monitored around the clock by Queensland Corrective Services who have extensive experience with this technology.”

The introduction of GPS monitoring devices is part of a $98.4 million funding package to support the crackdown on youth crime.

The package includes: •

a trial of GPS monitoring in Townsville, North Brisbane, Moreton, Logan and the Gold Coast.

expansion of the joint Police and Youth Justice Co-responder strike teams to North Brisbane and the Gold Coast (in addition to existing Co-Responder teams based in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Moreton and Logan).

enhanced intensive supervision of young people on bail through the Conditional Bail Program, including weekend and after-hours supervision.

intensive support for families of children on bail provided by NGOs in communities.

Second Contract Lines Up More Bruce Highway Lanes

The final contract has been awarded to build a major section of the Bruce Highway upgrade between Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Steve Irwin Way at Exit 163.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project was being delivered under the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program – the largest infrastructure program in Queensland.

“The Bruce Highway is Queensland’s major north-south freight and commuter corridor and the Australian Government is committed to improving road safety standards and efficiency across the road network,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“This project will deliver congestion-busting improvements to one of the busiest stretches of highway in Queensland, marking another step forward in supporting future growth and prosperity in the region.

“We are continuing to roll out these types of major projects across the nation under our $110 billion infrastructure investment pipeline, which is laying the foundations for economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said work was

already underway on the first major contract of the $662.5 million upgrade.

“This project is one of five upgrades with a combined value of more than $3 billion transforming the highway between Brisbane and Gympie, supporting more than 2,000 jobs and driving Queensland’s economic recovery,” Mr Bailey said.

“Major construction on the first contract, which is being delivered by Acciona Infrastructure Australia, began in late November 2020.

“Works are progressing well on that front, with construction on the new southbound lanes now underway.

“Fulton Hogan, which will deliver the second contract we’ve just awarded, will focus on the section between Pumicestone Road and Steve Irwin Way (at Exit 163), with works expected to start on that section by mid-2021.”

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said the second contract includes targets to ensure up to 90 per cent of local contract expenditure occurs within 75 kilometres of the project site.

“Other contract conditions will ensure direct hires for up to 80 per cent of the project’s workforce, targeting leading hands, operators and labourers directly, as well as increasing training opportunities for staff and new employees and increas-

ing opportunities for Indigenous workers,” Mr Young said.

“In addition to delivering a safer road network, the project is supporting an average of 664 direct jobs and is scheduled for completion in early 2023.

“This is a win for local industry and the freight, commuter and recreational traffic, who will benefit from safer overtaking opportunities and higher-quality journeys.”

Queensland Member for Pumicestone Ali King said the project would deliver upgrades to the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Pumicestone Road highway exits. “These are busy interchanges which

Home Ownership Dreams Come True in Caboolture The Federal Government’s initiatives to help people buy their own home have been a gamechanger for the residential construction sector and Australia’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison was in Caboolture on May 18 to visit local business Taipan Hydraulic Hoses, which helped around eight of its staff fulfill their dream of purchasing their first home.

“Our investment (is) getting people into their first homes, to build their own homes,” Mr Morrison said.

Taipan co-founder Allan Sandilands employed a “Dream Manager” to help his staff fulfill their life goals.

As a result, five employees at the business recently purchased their first home, using Federal Government initiatives such as the HomeBuilder program.

“The Homebuyer initiative is based on one simple premise, we want to back Australians in,” Mr Morrison said.

“So, we put $25,000 in. But they’ll put the $300,000 or the $250,000 in or sometimes much more than that.

“This is about Government enabling Australians to get themselves into their first home.”

People Power Wins at Godwin Beach

By Staff Writer Mozza Moreton Bay Regional Council has been considering a development application

by Mr Hongxi Liang for a change of material use of land at 1 The Esplanade Godwin Beach. The application was for the development of 20 campsites in an area rated as having high ecological value and as an erosion prone, high inundation area as assessed by the State Planning Policy Map of Queensland published by the Department of State Development and Planning.

The application described the campsites as being part of an Eco Tourism area but did not provide any detail on what this constitutes in terms of improving or even preserving the environment.

Godwin Beach Esplanade No mention was made of what contribution the development would make to the area financially, in terms of providing employment or adding to the amenity of the area enjoyed by the locals.

There were no adequate management plans lodged with the application for traffic, waste or noise, leaving many unanswered questions for locals.

Local residents had lodged numerous objections to the application not least of which were about preservation of flora, fauna and land structures as well as traffic, noise and pollution issues.

They argued that ample camping facil-

ities already exist in the area including at Turners Camp Road, Sandstone Point, Bongaree, Woorim, Ocean Beach, Gallagher’s Point and Poverty Creek, providing more than 100 camp sites all told for visitors. This is in addition to other accommodation such as cabins, van sites, apartments and houses for holiday letting.

The proposal for the location which was rated as having high ecological value and as being an erosion prone, high inundation area, seemed counterproductive when other local initiatives such as mangrove regeneration and fish breeding area creation had been so warmly welcomed into the area.

This application has now been withdrawn following public consultation with Locals by Council Officers and Councillor Brooke Savage. It is understood council ultimately did not recommend support for the application.

Well done to those who attended the meetings arranged with Council over this issue and the many who took the time to document their objections. Godwin Beach will remain the quiet haven it always has been as a result. Well done also to the Council for listening to its people.

Loads of Business or Loads of Conservation – What Do You Think?

Recent campaigns to close or limit the access of 4WD Vehicles to Ocean Beach on Bribie Island are concerning businesses that rely on day trippers for their livelihood. Of course, the government’s job is to balance the needs and wants of its people based on the facts and what’s best for the community.

When both sides completely disagree over these issues the government’s job gets harder, so what is fact and what is emotion surrounding this issue? Let’s take a look.

The Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) is of the view that 4WD Vehicles are jeopardising the breeding of Marine Turtles and is having a significant impact on turtle populations.

According to their website (biepa. org), “BIEPA continues to lobby State Government to stop the unsustainable, destructive impacts of 4WD and jet ski recreational activities on Bribie Island’s fragile natural environment, biodiversity, residential communities and passive recreational activities.

BIEPA, together with many in the Bribie Island community, is calling for the Government to significantly limit the numbers of 4WD permits issued, and to address the disturbance created by jet skis, in order to achieve environmental and legislative compliance on Bribie’s internationally protected beaches and in the surrounding waters of Pumicestone Passage and Moreton Bay.”

Ocean Beach Access According to the Department of Environment and Science’s website (des.qld.gov. au), “Marine turtles nest on many beaches along the south Queensland coast on most nights from December to February.

Turtles are common on many of the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef and in some sheltered parts of the Queensland coast including Bowling Green Bay south of Townsville, Shoalwater and Corio Bays in central Queensland, Sandy Strait and in east Moreton Bay. The Capricorn/Bunker Groups of islands on the Great Barrier Reef are one of the world’s major breeding areas for green and loggerhead turtles.

North West, Hoskyn and Wreck Islands are the most important green turtle nesting areas, while Wreck, Erskine and Masthead are the most important loggerhead turtle rookeries.

Nearby Bundaberg coast also supports the Pacific region’s largest breeding population of loggerhead turtles.

Ms Scanlon said that under the changes to legislation, most of the island’s national park, Cape Moreton Conservation Park and some unallocated State land would be transferred.

Mulgumpin, meaning ‘place of sandhills’ is the Aboriginal name for Moreton Island.

The Indigenous people of Mulgumpin are known as the Ngugi. Moorgumpin lies within the area referred to as Quandamooka. Quandamooka is commonly defined as the Moreton Bay region.

In 1770 Captain James Cook named “Morton Bay” after the Scottish Earl of Morton on the 17th May, which was later misspelled as ‘Moreton Bay’ in translations from his journals. It wasn’t until 1823 that the first ‘white visitors’ arrived on Moreton Island. The last of the Ngugi

Island and the Heron Island Research Station allow visitors to stay overnight and go turtle watching.

Near Bundaberg on Queensland’s central coast, Mon Repos supports the largest concentration of nesting sea turtles on the east Australian mainland. Nesting turtles at Mon Repos include the loggerhead, flatback, and green. At the peak of a prime nesting season, 20 or more turtles a night (mostly loggerheads) come ashore to nest on this 1.5km long sandy beach.

A good place to see these nesting turtles and emerging hatchlings is Mon Repos Conservation Regional Park or through visiting the Mon Repos Turtle Centre.”

So there are a number of key areas for these turtles, including Bribie Island as it is part of the east Moreton Bay area along with Moreton Island itself.

Queensland has 13,300 kms of coastline in total and the Bribie Island 4WD access on Ocean Beach is approximately 25 kms long representing 0.18% of the total coastline.

Businesses on the island that rely on 4WD day trippers and campers include petrol stations, food stores, cafes, bakeries, hotels and motoring and hardware suppliers, to name a few. One new business that is risking everything on the continuation of the current arrangements is the new car wash being built on First Avenue near the cinema.

Industry sources have advised that the investment in this business exceeds $1M providing employment in construction and ongoing operations for our people.

Imagine if the cars simply stopped, bankruptcy must surely follow for this business and perhaps others as they struggle to survive post-COVID 19. Businesses already recently shut on the island include restaurants, butchers and cafes.

So where does this leave us? What is a fair solution? Shouldn’t we as locals have a say? Please write to the Editor with your thoughts.

Moreton Island will be transferred back to Traditional Owners after the Palaszczuk Government recently passed legislation despite concerns from business and locals.

Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said in recognition of the Quandamooka Peoples’ native title rights on Mulgumpin, the Palaszczuk Government would begin the formal process to return some 17,000 hectares of national and conservation parkland. This represents 98% of the island.

Moreton Lighthouse “The Quandamooka People have been custodians of Mulgumpin for thousands of years - protecting and managing the land for generations,” Ms Scanlon said.

“The passing of this legislation is about the ongoing recognition of Quandamooka connection to the land, returning rightful ownership to Traditional Owners and working with them to manage and promote new tourism opportunities for this national treasure.

“It’s this government that set in motion Queensland’s Path to Treaty, is investing close to $1 billion to protect the environment and create jobs as part of our economic recovery, and is recognising native title rights over Mulgumpin.”

Beautiful Moreton Island people were relocated to Stradbroke Island in 1850.

Moreton Island is rich in both Aboriginal and European history, just like Bribie Island, so the same principles could easily be applied here. Worth knowing as you invest your hard-earned on the island.

Moreton has townships of Bulwer, Cowan Cowan, Tangalooma and Kooringal which contain approximately 250 houses belonging to local residents. It also has extensive tourism and accommodation businesses, camping grounds, shops and services. The lighthouse on the island to guide ships into the Port of Brisbane was established in 1830, and the island was critical in the defence of Brisbane during WW2.

The recent experiment of granting control to traditional owners on Stradbroke Island has led to conflict between groups of owners and the closing off of recreational areas to tourists. This trend is growing elsewhere such as in New South Wales at Mt Warning, the Northern Territory at Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Victoria at the Grampians where sites are now closed to climbers and visitors.

Most alarmingly, these moves are not being signalled to voters in advance, with consultation being quite minimal and meaningless as these decisions are being made in George Street Brisbane regardless of the concerns of locals and business that no longer seem to matter.

These decision-makers have no skin in the game as they don’t live here, yet they feel entitled to do as they please. Doing this while other bigger issues such as COVID are dominating the media and public debate is also rather cynical, like sneaking one through to the keeper.

Alas, the horse has bolted again.

New Members Hook Into Sustainable Fisheries Plan

When conditions such as current and water clarity aren’t at their best, it can come down to the finer details. Moon phase and the position of the moon in the sky are crucial factors which are often overlooked, even by very experienced anglers. This month, the position of the moon has certainly meant the difference between a hit and a miss! Moon rise, moon set, moon-under-foot and moon-over-head have been the cues to watch for increased fish aggregation.

There’s still a lot of activity from the pelagic species on the offshore reefs with large schools of small tuna making up the bulk of an incredible bio mass that’s been evident over recent weeks. The constant trickle of a water feature as the baitfish flicker on the surface, making up the ambience during afternoon’s spent chasing the larger predatory species. In particular, Spanish Mackerel. The Spanos are building in numbers and they’ve been in very very green pastures! These are all big, thick, mature fish in very healthy condition and there’s no small ones. Wire is a must when trolling for these beasts. A small length

in the Coral Sea at a remote sea mount named Kenn Reef, filming some incredible fishing action with Escape with ET. There are 4 action-packed episodes coming up that will make for great viewing!

The local offshore fishing has been slow as of late, thanks in part, to the relentless trade winds that are typical for this time of year. Strong southerlies pushing large swells up the coast have been prevalent.

Coupled with a higher than average rainfall, the water in close has been quite dirty. The major influencing factor to our local reefs, the East Australian Current, has also been taking a wider, slower coarse than we generally like to see. With all that being said, there are still some excellent fish being caught locally.

The water is cooling. We saw quite a significant drop in water temperatures this month which means the time is upon us to start targeting those big knobby Snapper.

During these cooler months there will be quality Snapper schooled up on almost every bit of structure, patch of rubble and wonky hole in south east Queensland as they aggregate to spawn. Large soft plastic lures with the lightest possible jighead (this can take some experimentation) fished on a light 20lb combo are the choice for many who target these superb table fish. Fishing light gets the bite! However, it takes a large degree of angling prowess on such a light setup when that trophy fish comes along, adding further to the reward.

16kg Spanish Mackerel launching on a popper. around 15cm should suffice, the smaller the better but not too small. They’re hitting the large topwater lures like poppers and stickbaits more readily as they’re gorging themselves on the incredible bio-mass I mentioned earlier. Target those lunar bite periods when they are feeding aggressively. A large Spanish Mackerel can manage to elude some quite seasoned anglers and are a trophy fish in anyone’s books. The fish on our doorstep at the moment are certainly of “trophy fish“ standard. And they’re here in numbers! Often large Spanish Mackerel can be a risk of carrying ciguatera toxin.

There’s the old story that our large SEQ winter Spanish don’t feed on the GBR long enough to accumulate the toxin, but you can take that with a grain of salt. I have personally eaten local Spanish Mackerel up to 20kg without any issue. Typically SEQ winter Spanish are prized for their extremely high fat content. It’s this high fat content that makes them go so well on the barby.

The Queensland Government is appointing new members to eleven fishery working groups to continue implementation of the Sustainable Fisheries Strategy.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said there was strong interest to join the groups, which are integral to delivering world-class fisheries management in Queensland.

“The fishery working groups are renewed every two years and this is an exciting opportunity to be part of sustainable fisheries management,” Mr Furner said.

“These groups provide important operational advice on the management of specific fisheries and an important communication and consultative forum between fishing stakeholders, Fisheries Queensland and the government.”

Mr Furner said a Fisheries Queensland selection panel considered more than 120 nominations to join eight existing and three new fishery working groups.

“The panel appointed 96 members who represent a range of stakeholders including commercial and recreational fishers, charter operators, seafood marketers and processors, scientists and conservationists,” he said.

“I would like to thank all the applicants who expressed an interest in being part of the fishery working groups for the next two years.”

Two new fishery working groups will review Gulf of Carpentaria inshore and East Coast Spanish mackerel fisheries, while eight other fishery working groups are being reformed to continue to provide operational advice under the new harvest strategies.

A new vessel tracking working group has also been established as part of a Fisheries Queensland review.

Some of the groups held their first meetings in April or early May, while the rest will meet soon.

GARDEN PROTECTION

Your garden investment will from time to time need protection. When I ask customers what type of soil they have the answer is usually “Bribie Soil”. In other words, sandy soil (which can be acidic).

You can reduce water use in the garden by preparing the soil, using Wetting Agents, being generous with mulches and watering less, but densely.

Simple things like using a Wetting Agent, in liquid or granular form, helps water penetrate the soil down to the plant roots.

Surface tension will be changed, run off is minimal and water penetrates deeper into the soil. All gardens, pots and lawns should be treated.

Mulch, mulch, mulch - it helps reduce evaporation from the soil. Spread about 50mm thick and then apply a Wetting Agent on the mulch, making an effective solution to watering.

A good long watering once or twice a week is better than a light watering every day.

If using a sprinkler try for at least 1 hour per area.

Ranges of mulches include, sugar cane, lucerne, tea tree, red cypress, “Who Flung Dung” and pine bark. All of these will provide not only an attractive finish to gardens or pots, but keep the soil cool and the roots protected from heat.

The major trace elements required for plant growth are N P K. N = Nitrogen P = Phosphorus K = Potassium (Potash) All complete fertilizers have a percentage of each. For example, N9% P4% K8%, with additional trace elements like sulphur, calcium or boron. These percentages are printed on the packaging.

In most soils these elements are available naturally. Occasionally deficiencies show up in plants, e.g., yellowing of leaves. If the plants fail to survive, the soil may be too acidic. This can be improved by adding Lime or Dolomite to sweeten the soil. If the soil is dry and chalky, it may be too alkaline. This soil can be improved by adding sulphur, compost and sulphate of iron. Liquid fertilizing of your plants gives them an extra boost.

If you are unsure of when to use a complete fertilizer (known as slow release fertilizer), feed your garden or pots every change of season. Liquid feed your garden during Spring and Summer once a fortnight. Any plant in a pot should receive a liquid feed once a month.

Slow release fertilizers like Osmocote comprise granules coated with organic material. Water passes through the coating to the fertilizer and nutrients are released.

Different types of Osmocote have different formulae for individual plants, like citrus and fruit trees, roses, and potted plants.

Release times of these nutrients vary from 2- 3 months to 8 – 9 months. When the weather is extremely hot the nutrients can be released too quickly. Gardeners find the slow release method of feeding plants convenient, as they are only having to feed every 3 to 4 months.

An annual dressing of lime, dolomite or gypsum improves clay soil, and the availability of phosphate. Use gypsum, not lime, for acid-loving plants as it is neutral.

Animal manures for the garden improve the soil structure. A good soil will hold nutrients and water, making it easy for the plant roots to extract. Compost should be added at least once a year to maintain good soil condition.

Good hygiene should also be maintained, keeping tools, pots and seed raising trays clean. Pick off all diseased leaves and dispose of them to minimise spread of disease.

FERTILIZER When a baby is born we are given guidelines on what and when to feed it. As the baby grows, they become more vocal telling you when they are hungry. By 12 months they are on solids and liquids.

mixes and fertilizers, the question is, which to buy that will keep your pot plant healthy? Factors such as light, temperature, humidity, draughts, insects and diseases affect the plants.

The potting mix needs to have good aeration, readily available water, little shrinkage over 6 months, and be easy to re-wet if it dries out.

So you need to choose a potting mix that can supply all of the major nutrients and trace elements, otherwise you must supply that fertilizer yourself. A general rule: If the potting mix bag says no fertilizer needed for some months, you don’t have to start feeding straight away. Otherwise, start feeding the plants as soon as you have potted them.

Buy your pot on impulse! The number of times I’ve seen something and not purchased, only to come back later and find it gone, so don’t let someone else get that pot. You can always buy the plant later.

Pots come in many shapes, sizes and finishes - glazed, tall, bowl, terracotta and troughs. It can take many bags of potting mix to fill a large pot. So look at buying beanbag beans or stones to fill the pot before adding the potting mix. On the

Seed packs unopened should last a couple of years.

Some seeds can be grown directly into the garden, e.g., carrots, beans or sweet corn.

With fine seed like carrots add a sand mix with the seed making it easier for distribution. Some seeds can be soaked overnight in warm water or scarified with a light sandpaper. With most other seeds, sow into a tray to germinate.

When sowing directly into the garden make a long narrow trench 1 cm deep for fine seed and 2-3 cm deep for larger seed.

Line the trench with Seed Raising Mix, sow the seed, cover with Seed Raising Mix and firm down so the soil makes contact

The visual effect of the plant in the pot is most important. For example, small bowls are ideal for succulents and cacti. For tall plants make sure the base of the pot is stable like a square base pot and saucer, so they can’t be blown over in windy weather.

Terracotta pots should be soaked in or with water so the moisture is not drawn out when the plant is potted up. Wet the terracotta pot itself each time you water your plants.

Pot feet help with good drainage. If the pot is sitting in a saucer, use either sand or small stones to act as a filter. Once the pot plant is watered the water in the saucer is trying to push back up into an already wet plant. This will cause over-watering and the plants to rot, or become susceptible to bacterial and fungal diseases.

Sowing in trays – fill the trays first with a layer of potting mix, then add the Seed Raising Mix. Firm down. Sow the seed and cover with 5mm of the Seed Raising Mix. Fine seed can be just pressed into the surface.

Water lightly and place in a warm spot out of the sun. By placing the trays on Besser blocks, it will give the bottom of the tray heat and keep them off the ground away from pests like snails and ants.

The bottom heat will help with the seeds germinating quicker. Also, to help with seed germination use 2 teaspoons of Epsom Salts in 5 litres of water – use only once. Water regularly – I sometimes give them a half-strength drink of Seasol.

Once the seeds have germinated and the plants have at least 6 leaves, transplant into the garden. Poor germination can be caused by planting seeds too deep, being too wet or being eaten by snails or birds.

LAVENDER

Nutgrass is a very common problem weed that exists in Australia

Available soon in all garden centres. There are a number of varieties of Lavender with the most popular being French Lavender. A bushy evergreen shrub with narrow-toothed grey-green leaves. The lavender blue flowers are distinctively scented. The height and spread is 1m x 1m.

English lavender is a dense evergreen shrub. The scented grey/blue flowers are carried above the foliage. The height and spead is 1m x 1.2m Italian lavender is a quick growing rounded evergreen with narrow smooth grey leaves up to 2 cm long. Dark purple scented flowers grow above the foliage.

Height to 60cm.

Lavenders make a nice hedge and should be planted quite closely. Being a grey foliage plant they don’t like wet feed. If you wish to grow lavender in a pot, use terracotta as they aid good drainage. The flowers attract bees and dried they repel moths.

You’ll need:

Put Lavender flowers and leaves into airtight container and pour over the vinegar. Put the lid on and allow to infuse for about 3 days in a cool, dark place; shake twice daily.

After 3 days strain lavender through a fine sieve into a jug.

Add the rosewater to the lavender infusion and stir to mix thoroughly.

Decant into a pretty bottle.

When customers visit me here at Mitre 10 they say I have the best job in the world.

This is when I usually have a hose in my hand watering the plants. At this time of the year it is best to water in the morning.

Imagine you have come home from work and you run yourself a bath and fall asleep. When you awake the water is cold. That’s what it’s like for your plants in the garden.

So go and draw yourself a bath, pop in some of the Lavender Water, maybe that cocktail I had in my first article and after a wonderful day in the garden.

Species:- Cyperus rotundus L. Family : - CYPERACEAE Nutgrass is a very common problem weed that exists in Australia and cost many millions of dollars to contain its spread and effect in home lawns, gardens, horticulture and agriculture.

In lawns or turf the little nuts or seeds can stay dormant for up to 50 years and only germinate when it feels it has the best chance for survival.

The plant has an amazing ability to spread and has a massive rhizomatous root system. The roots develop fibre covered tubers (or NUTS) that then germinate and grow into the sedge grass or the waxy shiny leaf we see on the surface.

To get the best results the weeds must be completely germinated in order to spray, if not then more germinations will quickly follow the first generation.

If you have a bad infestation then you can expect many more germinations even after a relatively good kill with sprays on the first and second population / germinations.

The product we use is an expensive herbicide that is totally dedicated to controlling sedges and the nutgrass family of weeds (including Mullumbimby couch, which is also a bad weed problem in home lawns and turf).

When we spray these weeds, it can take up to 3 to 4 weeks for this chemical to get into the plant and kill what is on the surface only.

Unfortunately there is NO RESIDUAL activity with this product and it will only kill what we can see on the day of the service treatment.

Hence if these die then there is a fair chance that other populations will germinated after our scheduled visit and more will come up in the preceding next 8 weeks.

Due to the sporadic nature of these weeds sometimes you never see them as they lay dormant then when we get conditions right you get massive infestations of these weeds on the surface.

Unfortunately we cannot kill the entire population below the ground, only when it emerges, therefore we cannot see them, so we can’t be there every time they come up.

Thus when we come on the given service day we will always spray these and if you see more come up between visits you must be aware that we cannot kill them all in one spray and on the given cycle day we will respray them again as per the program dates.

YOU CAN NOT ERADICATE NUTGRASS DUE TO THE LONG DORMANCY OF THE NUT AND THE NATURE OF GERMINATION
