Last issue brought us some great letters to the editor on many topics.

There was plenty of feedback in relation to our health story last issue, we have decided to do a follow up story.

Please see page 16. We have published comments from our local politicians from both sides and you can judge yourself with their responses and if they are really answering our questions or not. The public deserves transparency and clear responses from our local Politicians.

Our Feature story is about this region’s growth in housing developments and how it outstrips our Road infrastructure. While the State Government are excited about the development of new area’s it seems, they haven’t planned our roads to cope with the growth.

We want your feedback. Once again, this newspaper is to create discussion on important issues in our region or any issue which may affects us as citizens including health, infrastructure, and the current cost of living.

Bribie Buses I share Cranky Lizard’s wonderment expressed in his latest published comments, relating to empty or near empty buses driving around Bribie.

Is the lack of passengers using the service an indication that the service is not required or is it that the service does not recognise and/or meet the needs of the island community?

The three bus routes that service the island operate an hourly timetable (with a few exceptions). All of the routes journey through the Bribie Island Park ‘n’ Ride in Bongaree.

Since these routes were established there has been new development and population growth in areas such as GemLife and Pacific Harbour.

Bus travel to island destinations (cinema, library, Community Arts Centre, U3A, Woorim Beach etc), where a change of bus is required, often has a long wait time for the connecting bus. For example, journey time from North St Woorim to Community Arts Centre is 54 mins with 18 mins wait at Park “n” Ride. Avon Ave/Endeavour Dr

I note with some sadness that Ron Watson’s response relies entirely on the “blame game “in his response, referring to colonial history dating back to 1493, which rather continues the politics of division, “it’s not us, someone else caused it” . Rather than constantly looking backward, I urge you and anybody else with interest in current truth and fact that you review the last speech by Jacinta Nampijinpa Price. Jacinta is the deputy mayor of Alice Springs, a strong proud Australian woman who has worked as a Cross Cultural Consultant for almost 20 years. Jacinta refers to the high level of domestic violence and deaths in custody in the aboriginal community and describes the culture of victimhood and blame as hypocritical. It is time that the politicians and the media engaged with the Jacinta’s of Australia, rather than the “Aboriginal Industry “which seems to be constantly causing division and looking for rent seeking handouts, rather than actually fixing today’s problems today.

I really enjoyed reading your paper this morning. I would just like to compliment you on what I found to be a refreshing reflection of reality. In your editorial comment at the start, and three other stories in particular. They were the article by Harvey Fewings and the Cranky Lizard Speaks section.

It was also incredible in a newspaper to read some very valid questions that are being asked of our health care system. Particularly for our local area.

Todays media frenzy is all about outrage and. what I would term, “the great awokening”. The thing is, changing the way we speak and the language we use so that everyone is “equal”, will never make everyone equal. It will only make the minority “right”, and everyone else “wrong”.

And those who are “wrong”, lose their voice. Which I feel has already begun.

Especially in some media outlets which is always skewed one way.

And as for Harvey’s article, I couldn’t agree more that respect for women, and every other value that lies within a healthy society comes from within

the home. Thriving families are the backbone of a thriving society.

I feel like it is rare these days to hear or read something that reflects what I believe, and what I believe is the opinion of the silent majority. And perhaps only silent because no one wants to report on something that isn’t fed on drama and outrage. On TV, where crucial conversations are held.

I just wanted to encourage you to keep up the good work. I felt from the tone of your Editor’s statement that things were a bit tough at the moment. Don’t be discouraged, I have only a small understanding of the challenges you must face every day, but I do know these are difficult times and your voice truly does make a difference.

I remember as a teenager being apart of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, at the time I was an Apprentice and only achieved the Bronze Award, but was so proud of my achievement.

I must admit over the years enjoying the Dukes “gaffes”, he was so down to earth and open.

Farley Dear Editor, Has Cranky Lizard ever asked himself why our buses are empty? For people who do not have the luxury of being able to drive their own car, because of age, wealth, or health, buses are essential in a caring community. Even though the buses are here, they are so infrequent that they cause huge amounts of wasted time for their users.

They are usually empty because developers have designed this country to be reliant on cars. They even dismantled the train system - the most efficient form of public transport, so belatedly, it requires reviving.

Developers are far too concerned with privacy, rather than connectedness, which is the key to a functioning community. Navigating the suburbs with all the curving roads and cul-desacs, even requires GPS for visitors, so that they don’t end up in the wrong dead-end. Some developers provide for houses beside busy thoroughfares with buses which whizz straight past, but then do not connect them via walkways to all the cul-de-sacs.

Instead they build a high fence.

lic transport (usually in high-rises).

But do we want to force people out of their homes just because they can no longer drive? Just as new housing is being built to allow for different stages of life, so too should our suburbs’ roadways be designed for all ages.

Intergenerational living is good for everyone.

I am so glad that this woke, PC and dishonest culture that is pervading our society is called out for what it is. Also enjoyed the fishing article.` Regards Ron E Adams wrote in the April edition of LOCAL a tale of woe about being on the CSS pension and not being eligible for any Centrelink benefits. He or she must be on a massive CSS pension and/or have considerable assets to prevent them from receiving any benefits from Centrelink at all. As usual when there is an axe to grind, only half the story is told.

J Jones I read the letter from Kathy Vincent in your last issue and I thought what crazy bureaucrat decided that the site on First Avenue opposite the memorial garden would be a good site for a hospital. All the reasons mentioned in Kathy’s letter would surely show what a dumb idea this would be. I decided to read the real estate notices adjacent to the block of land in question

Please support our Local Businesses and I was puzzled at no mention of the land being used for a hospital. I then thought the best way to show my opposition to the plan was to contact my local State representative and make my opinions felt.

I made an appointment and spoke with Ali King who advised me that there was not and never had been a consideration of the site mentioned

by Kathy on First Avenue. I was told that Kathy had not approached Ali King for confirmation before writing her letter. According to Ali the hospital is planned for somewhere in the Bongaree area, possible sites are being identified and building is scheduled to commence during 2023.

I feel that we should avoid misinformation being spread through letters to the media which have not had at least some rudimentary checking with a reputable source. My suspicious mind wonders if the letter was part of some biased political mischief making. If so we can do without this sort of thing. My wife and I have lived on Bribie for nearly 20 years and I can honestly say that I have experienced nothing but candour and support from State government representatives save one who was elected during Campbell Newman’s stewardship.

Let’s have facts not unfounded gossip in our much valued local community publications.

Caboolture Housing Growth Outstrips Road Infrastructure In Leaps and Bounds The Queensland Government continues to approve housing development at a rate that outstrips its transport investment strategy, causing great frustration to locals using the Bruce Highway and Bribie Island Road.

The large parcel of former farm land known as Caboolture West will be developed into a new housing district the size of Bundaberg as part of a planning experiment by the state government and we are the guinea pigs.

A specialist team of government planners was created last month to accelerate plans to turn the corridor between the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast into a 200km city, growing to 5 million residents making it the same population currently in Sydney. Yes great, because Sydney siders never complain about overcrowding.

Deputy Premier and Planning Minister Steven Miles who is leading this initiative said the development would improve housing choice and affordability. It is very fortunate that our local state MP Ali King was a staffer in Mr Miles office before entering Parliament so local consultation should be thorough and meaningful.

He said “Caboolture West will ultimately be a major regional urban centre that will support 17,000 jobs and have many social benefits such as new health and education centres as well as sport and recreation facilities”.

Unfortunately Mr Miles poor relationship with the federal government will make it difficult for him to win their support to pay for the infrastructure needed to underpin his plan. Locals will ultimately suffer as a result of this immature politicking. What we all need is an end to the jibes and a start to a co-operative state and federal plan for the area that consults locals and includes the local council.

The Urban Development Institute of Australia who represents developers warned last year that large parts of South East Queensland had fallen behind standard land availability benchmarks that allow developers to prosper.

No joint statement by the Queensland Transport Minister on the proposal has been made at this stage and we will need to lobby as locals and make our voice heard, so the left hand of government knows what the right hand is doing.

Don’t forget this development comes on top of the planned North Harbour Development at Burpengary and the East Caboolture Development underway at Elimbah. The combined total of new residents in our area at the completion of these 3 projects will be huge compared to what we have at the moment. Were

The government says that since 2016, the total length of the state controlled road network that requires rehabilitation or resurfacing has fallen by 847km.

Locals will also be frustrated at the glacial speed of the roadworks at the Old Toorbul Road intersection which at times is like a construction site ghost town with tumble weeds blowing past idle machinery while drivers wait and wait.

The oversight of outsourced road construction by the Department of Transport is appalling when simple intersections can take so long. Surely the contract has penalty clauses for contractors who drag the chain on important projects like these. Apparently not, meanwhile the rest of Bribie Island Road needing upgrading waits and waits. Don’t even think about a second bridge that appears to be lost in feasibility study land.

The unintended consequences of accelerated land development without accelerated road development could cripple our area for years while they play catch up. In many areas of Brisbane the game of catch up never ends which is why they all want to move to Bribie. Don’t let them ruin it - contact your local state MP today and have your say.

Moreton Bay Regional Council will continue its long-standing support with RSPCA to encourage responsible pet ownership in the region.

RSPCA’s ‘Operation Wanted’ will receive a $18,700 grant from Council to conduct its annual program between 1 June - 31 August 2021.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council would continue funding support for the desexing program for cats and dogs.

“We’re proud to purr-tner with RSPCA to support this program for a sixth year running,” Mayor Flannery said.

“It has been a huge success over the years; in 2020 there was 1,575 desexed dogs and 893 desexed cats in the Moreton Bay Region, both respectively 15% and 14% of the state total.”

RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty said despite the pandemic “Operation Wanted” was an enormous success last year and hopes to see it further increase this year.

“Some councils are more proactive than others and Moreton Bay Regional Council has always been tremendously supportive. We’re very grateful,” Mr Beatty said.

“By increasing desexing rates, we can help reduce unwanted litters, behavioural problems and even the risk of some cancers. De-sexing also reduces their desire to roam.”

By breaking down the barrier to getting your pet desexed, Mayor Flannery hoped to improve our region’s attitudes towards responsible pet ownership.

“In particular, Council is working to reduce our region’s high dog attack rate through a range of different crack-down and awareness initiatives,” Mayor Flannery said.

“One of those being our annual Regulated Dog Inspection Program, currently being conducted until the end of June, which ensures owners of regulated dogs are managing their pets in accordance with State Government legislation.

“We have a zero tolerance towards irresponsible pet ownership in the region because everyone has the right to be safe when they walk our streets, parks and foreshores.

“I’m not just saying that, this year we’ve working with the courts to fine residents for irresponsible pet ownership, which has led to vicious dog attacks and caused serious harm to people.”

One reason the Transport Minister has not been involved in these announcements may be that he has another set of problems on his hands which prevent him from improving roads in our area. Those problems include the huge cost of other Brisbane City projects such as Cross River Rail and Queens Wharf as well as overdue maintenance of existing roads.

The cost of required maintenance on Queensland’s state controlled roads has climbed by more than $400m in just one year, with dozens of bridges and culverts needing repair.

The estimated cost of the deferred maintenance backlog for state roads reached a massive $5.85bn as of June 30 last year – up 8 per cent from the previous financial year.

The opposition has seized on the figures to accuse the government of losing control of road maintenance.

But the government insists the total length of the network that needs programmed maintenance or rehabilitation works fell by 204km during 2019-20.

As of the end of the last financial year, there were 60 bridges and 54 major culverts with certified structure management plans to ensure their “continued safe operation”.

Of the state’s 4848 major culverts, 1,269 – or about one in four – were given a rating of “poor or very poor”.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said road material and construction costs had been rising, which in part reflected the climbing cost of the maintenance forecast.

“However, we continue to make gains on the maintenance program in real terms,” he said.

“Since June 2019, we’ve reduced the total length of road network requiring maintenance or rehabilitation by more than 200km.

“Over the next four years, we’ll spend about $1.1 billion a year maintaining the state’s roads.”

As of June 30, 2020: - The estimated deferred maintenance backlog on the state-controlled road network was $5.852b - Of the state’s 4848 major culverts, 136 have a rating of ‘very poor’ - There were 60 bridges and 54 major culverts with certified structure management plans.

LNP transport spokesman Steve Minnikin claimed the government had “completely lost control of road maintenance”.

“While Labor’s Big Black Hole (Cross River Rail) sucks up all the cash, road users across the state are left to deal with more potholes, more dodgy bridges and more dangerous roads,” he said.

“The Labor Government was warned by the Auditor-General three years ago that there were serious problems with Queensland’s roads.”

Meet the artists behind Unitywater artwork

Beachmere Water Tower A yellow-tailed black cockatoo perched on a tree branch is rapidly taking shape on the Beachmere Water Tower as part of Unitywater’s artwork trail.

Almost 1000 residents helped select the vibrant design, which captures the local wildlife and community appeal of the beachside village.

The artists behind the work are happy with how it is coming together and have shared some of their secrets.

This is the fourth design The Brightsiders artists, Jordan Bruce and Steven Falco, have painted for Unitywater.

Mr Falco said Beachmere was his favourite to date. “It’s more than putting a painting on a wall,” he said.

“We want to give the community something that gives people energy and makes them proud of their environment.”

Mr Bruce said picking a favourite from the work they had done on the Point Cartwright Reservoir, the Kallangur Water Tower, the King Street Water Tower and the Beachmere Water Tower was difficult.

“There’s been some amazing locations and great heights,” he said. “Kallangur was amazing because of the height.

“King Street was very special to me because I painted my daughter on that one and Beachmere is something special because our art practice is coming together and we’re refining our techniques.”

Mr Falco said the squiggles, triangles and other shapes they drew on the water tower fascinated passers-by because they often thought it was graffiti.

“Those marks are unique reference points for where the artwork should land,” he said.

The artist said that, particularly on a cylinder and when they were looking up, they

wanted to avoid the artwork distorting so the shapes acted as a guide.

“We’ve had people talk to us about paint by numbers but that is not completely correct,” Mr Falco said.

“Those symbols help us get the artwork up but everything else is done by eye.”

The pair uses quality house paint and spray paint from Germany to ensure the artwork can stand up to the elements.

Mr Bruce has painted what is termed ‘grand’ artwork – anything more than about 10 to 15 metres long or tall – for about six years, and Mr Falco’s first grand work was the Yelarbon silos near Goondiwindi.

Mr Falco thanked the community for showing their appreciation via a wave or a beep of their car horn.

“We also have to thank Unitywater because we just think it’s great there’s a business that values putting artwork into the community,” he said.

Unitywater Executive Manager for Customer and Community Katherine Gee said she enjoyed seeing the community get behind the Beachmere Water Tower artwork by sharing photos of the work-inprogress on social media and on community pages.

“Our customers and community can already see examples of Jordan and Steve’s great work on Unitywater’s Community Artwork Trail,” she said.

“The pair is passionate about their work and that is reflected in the quality of the artwork on our infrastructure.

“The trail stretches from the Sunshine Coast into the Moreton Bay area, with smaller murals featured alongside bigger artworks.

“I can’t wait to see the final product at Beachmere.”

Speaking to the Community directly and feedback is you would like an update. This update has been sent to the Editor of the LOCAL News by a resident who is constantly communicating with TMR on these works on Bribie Island Road.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) would like to provide you with an update on the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Old Toorbul Point Road intersection upgrade project.

Construction is moving into the fourth and final stage with all traffic being temporarily diverted to the newly constructed lanes on Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.

This stage of construction will also involve a variety of finalisation works such as footpaths, kerbing, signage, road lighting, landscaping, final asphalt surfacing, and linemarking.

Please refer to the attached final design for more information.

Construction is expected to be complete by late July, weather and construction conditions permitting.

Please note the “Give Way” arrangements at the intersection will remain in place until the new traffic signals are operational at completion of the project.

Key stakeholders are being kept up to date and notified of construction activities as the project progresses.

What to expect:

• majority of works will be undertaken during the day between 6am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday • some night works may be required between 7pm and 5am, Sunday to Thursday • temporary lane closures, reduced speed limits, construction signage and traffic control measures will be in place during the work • variable message signage will be in place at the approaches to the work site • motorists may experience minor delays and are being asked to drive to the changed traffic conditions, obeying signage, reduced speed limits and traffic controller directions at all times • noise and possible dust from construction activities and machinery can be expected • reversing beepers and flashing lights are a safety requirement and are used during working hours • priority access through the work zone is given to emergency vehicles.

Every effort is being made to keep disruptions and noise to a minimum while the works are underway. TMR understands roadworks can be frustrating for nearby residents, businesses and road users and acknowledges the cooperation and patience of stakeholders during construction.

The LOCAL Newspaper were not invited or aware the Premier was in Town. Apparently, this event was by ballot only and many seniors on Bribie Island were not successful in the Ballot system. Residents advise us they were extremely disappointed. The LOCAL News does not know how the Ballot system worked in Ali King MP’s office.

A media release was sent after the event with no photo’s and Ali King Member for Pumicestone said the following on the general media release “it had been a tough year for local seniors so she was delighted the first Queensland Government Seniors’ Morning Tea could be on Bribie Island.

“Older Queenslanders built our State and our focus is on delivering services to help make Queensland a more agefriendly place,” she said.

The show premieres at the Festival both in Brisbane at Spring Hill Reservoirs and in a beautiful outdoor space on Bribie Island.

A journey through Motherhood from the perspective of the powerful witch Sycorax aided and occasionally hindered by her elders, Medea and Circe, it focuses on the bond between mother and son, drawing on verbatim contributions from mothers in our community, in literature and in mythology. The physical theatre aspect adds an earthy connection as do both the outdoor and indoor settings.

With a highly collaborative all female team including actor/musician Liliana Macarone, performers Eleonora Ginardi, Emily McCormick and Olivia Pinwill and co-producer Alice Owen, this new piece of theatre will resonate with anyone who is or has a mother.

The Company is also working with Moreton Bay Regional Council to bring one of its notorious interactive 'Murder Mysteries' to the Festival. Murder at the Needle and Threat will be performed at Brendale Brewing Company on Thursday 20 May and is the writing debut of company member Rita Scarlet.

About InsideOutside Theatre Company Not-for-Profit InsideOutside has been creating original work for established and emerging artists and opportunities for people with disability and dementia to get involved in performance since 2012. Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop!

Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Celebrating four generations are Cathy McGillivray, Lily Rayner, Dot Lloyd and Amanda Rayner on Dots 95th Birthday My Mum is 95 on the 5th of May, and I will brag about her awesomeness to anyone who will listen.

It’s not that she’s 95, it’s her attitude and inner strength that constantly makes me glow with pride and I feel ridiculously grateful to have this amazing woman as my Mum. Mum’s still fiercely independent but will always put her family first. As her “Baby” (yes even though I’m 60), she will do her best to help me, at a time when I should be helping her, but that’s difficult to do when she is always out walking or gallivanting around her neighbourhood!

While May is a special month for us, May is also seen by most people as Mums month because of Mothers Day, and I hope this day helps most people realise that mums will usually put everyone else first and themselves and

their needs last.

I recently watched a short film about a job advertisement. The job required the successful applicant to be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year for the rest of their lives.

They were only to sleep when their “associate” slept, only to eat when their associate was feed, only sat if their associate was not requiring them and they were given no holidays. If they received more “associates” their job increased two, three, sometimes four fold. If their associates moved up to the same level as them they would then have twice as much responsibility as their associate and in some cases twice as much work.

All of the young applicants were horrified by this job, they complained that it was illegal to not have a holiday, to work such ridiculous hours, they certainly

had no intention of doing this job for no income and told the person advertising the job that they would never find anyone prepared to do this job.

Of course the job was being a Mum, and then progressing to a Nana. When each of the applicants were told this they cried, and immediately contacted their mum and thanked them for always being there. It was a wakeup call that made them realise the hard work and sacrifice that Mums do.

I see this all the time with Mums and Nanas that come to us to stay fit and healthy. Mums are the first ones to change their “Me” times if something happens in the family. Nanas stop their classes or personal training sessions in the school holidays to help their children cope with their own children.

Mums are tired, stressed, most work full time outside the home, and in some cases they are caring for their own Mum and Dad, their children and their grandchildren all at the same time.

They are pulled tight with demands to keep everyone happy and safe but what about them?

When we run our mums into the ground with constant demands for their time, do any of us appreciate that, just maybe, Mum needs some “Me” time? And I’m not just talking about going to the loo without someone calling out a question about a lost shoe or what the next meal will be.

If our mums become unhappy you can bet the whole family becomes unhappy!

Some Mums hide their unhappiness in glasses of wine and food. Some bottle it up until everyone is asleep to cry in solitude, and some slowly become worn out and worn down and are then seen as useless to those who have worn them out, then just when Mum needs help, everyone else is too busy with their own lives.

So why not encourage your Mum to look after herself? Why not make sure she never feels guilty about having her “Me” time so she can feel healthier and happier.

Anyone who has never had a personal trainer thinks the sessions are just about gasping for breath and sweating, while getting stronger and fitter, but most of the time personal trainers are the ones who hear all about the worries and trials of being a mum. We then encourage them to slam a ball or punch a bag until she can laugh about being the only one to ever clean the toilet or notice the milk bottle is empty.

The Mums and Nanas who are our clients will tell you that yes they do slam balls, and yes they definitely get stronger, more confident, happier and healthier but really the classes and personal training sessions are just as much about de-stressing, laughing, and unloading the daily craziness of their life, oh, and of course, how great they feel!

By Staff Writer Matt Owen Bribie Island is a unique location and not just for the outlook. We have the oldest median population age in Queensland at 59 years of age (2016 Census). This is significantly higher than the Queensland median of 37. Over 40% of the population is over 65 years of age. Again, significantly higher than the Queensland equivalent at 15.2%.

The above figures mean that health is even more important to this local community.

As you get older, you rely more on the health system, right? Falls, heart attacks and general health issues are more common as we age. Surely a population with nearly triple the number of residents over 65 should be a unique case. I’m not saying any life is more important than another.

The distance from Woorim to Caboolture Hospital is 29km (31 minutes). This is not taking into account traffic and/or roadworks and/or ambulance wait times and/or waiting time at the hospital where 34% of patients wait in an ambulance (ramping) (with the ambulance staff) for more than 30 minutes. It is possible that it could take 1.5hrs to get into the hospital and very likely longer. Now, responsibility.

Local Doctors. We have been informed that local doctor surgeries are not accepting new patients or have a mandatory wait time for new patients. Some new residents are driving one hour or more back to their previous address to see their old Doctor. Other new residents are making an excuse for appointment 2 weeks in advance to ‘get on the books’.

Nobody is blaming the Doctors, Nurses, Ambulance Staff or Hospital Workers. Let us be clear on that. They are being placed under immense stress and the outcome could well be they leave the health workforce.

Health is a responsibility of State and Federal Governments. State is responsible for hospitals and ambulances and Federal is responsible for GP’s and Medicare.

Longman Federal Member Terry Young, April 27, 2021 “I’m aware of the problems people on Bribie Island are having to see a GP and frankly it is not acceptable. This is why I fought hard to get funding for an after-hours medical service on the island and in September last year, was successful in securing $500,000 of federal funding for a three-year trial.

The information I had from the Health Department at that time was that the service would roll out in January, 2021.

Now I learn that the contract between the department and PHN Brisbane North, who is overseeing its delivery, wasn’t signed until January. The PHN is working through the tender process thoroughly to ensure the best outcome for the community is achieved.

I am frustrated that it is taking longer than I was originally informed, however I am pleased we are now at the end of the process and it should be a reality in July this year.

Once up and running, the after hours service should help alleviate some of the issues around seeing a GP. Pumicestone State Member, Ali King, April 12, 2021 “I am so excited that Bribie especially will finally have free public hospital services right here in our community. For Caboolture, the Satellite Hospital means more health services in the community and less pressure on Caboolture Hospital.

The Palaszczuk Government’s commitment is that our Satellite Hospitals will be built by 2023. $1.6 million was budgeted for planning, including site selection and engagement this financial year. That work is happening now. $35 million is budgeted for each Satellite Hospital and together they will create over 200 construction jobs. I have been working closely with the Department and the Health Minister to make sure the

Hospitals are moving forward. Building hospitals takes a lot of steps and I understand it’s frustrating that there’s not a lot to see in the early stages. At every meeting and in every phone call I am advocating strongly to make sure our Satellite Hospitals deliver what our community needs. It’s my number one priority.”

Queensland Health Minister, Yvette D’Ath, April 27, 2021 “Medical staff are “overwhelmed” and “exhausted” as Queensland doesn’t have enough hospital beds to cope with “unsustainable” demand and that nothing will be solved without major reforms.”

Shadow Health Minister, Ros Bates, April 27, 2021 “Queensland Health has had a cardiac arrest and is on life support. It has taken two Health Minister’s under Annastacia Palaszczuk to break our health system.

We’ve had denial after denial. The Health Minister has blamed patients for going to hospital, blamed ambulances for ramping and blamed hospitals going into code yellow. The culture is rotten in Queensland Health and our frontline staff need more help. In the space of a few days we’ve had the Health Minister say its seasonal demand but now she’s changed her tune completely.”

The Community The common theme in our communications with local residents is that they can’t get an appointment with a Doctor as a new patient. Since when is it ok to turn patients away? This should not be an option. Surely you should not be turning patients away?

As you talk with more people and dig deeper you hear the stories that are beyond just a visit to a GP. Waiting for ambulances, waiting in ambulances, ambulances coming from the Sunshine Coast, being sent home in extreme pain, surgery waiting periods and the list just goes on and on.

One particular story is of a local 61 year old female who had a fall at home. Unfortunately, the fall led to 3 fractures and other injuries. She was discharged from the hospital after only 5hrs, given 8 tablets and she wasn’t even sure where she was!

There was no communication with her husband. After going home the local GP didn’t accept the appointment as she was a new resident so in the car for nearly an hour drive back to the old Doctor. This all happened only a few weeks ago and is only one example of what is going on in our hospitals. This is just a snapshot of what is going on, in the local community and across the state.

So, what is the problem?

State Election. This was in October 2020, 6 months ago. What is there to show for it at this stage? Nothing.

No land and no strategy. For it to be our State Members number 1 priority and for there to be nothing tangible after six months? Hopefully there is more to show in the next 6 months.

While the press release is fluffy, there is no substance, no hard actions and tangible outcomes. How long does it take to secure land?

2. The after-hours GP service. This was announced in September 2020. Again, here we are with tenders closing in May. Will it be 12 months before this gets off the ground?

3. The response from Brisbane North PHN didn’t address our questions directly around the number of appointments expected from the after-hours GP service, the difficulty in making appointments and the delay in the program to date. These processes have 6 months of planning and ‘community engagement’ but it seems the short-term solutions are ignored.

Not enough Doctors? A temporary hospital? Cultural changes to our health services? Medical students?

Overseas doctors? Bring back retired Doctors? What about a naval hospital ship? Immediate after-hours service in existing surgeries? Increased promotion of telephone health services? Private investment, is that being encouraged?

What do you think? Some people will just accept it and say it is the way that it is and it is worse in other places who have hospitals further away. They might reference other countries and say we are lucky. These people probably think our roads are great and that crime isn’t a problem as well…

Others will say it is not the Australian way. Access to health care is a right. You should not be turned away from medical care. We are also now paying more in private health cover and bulk billing seems to be disappearing. It is probably fair to say that our health system in Queensland is in crisis and critical NOW, we need urgent short term solutions. Transparency and communication from our leaders is more important now than ever for the benefit of their communities, keep us updated.

There is plenty of growth in Queensland and people are flocking here in droves.

The State Government needs a plan for the growth in this state in so many area’s and health should of been at the top of the list.

So, there you have it folks. Sounds like we are past the stage of denial from the State Government, the tender process is underway for the after-hours GP service that will be months behind the original time frame so there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It is just a pity that the tunnel was so painful for so many. What is the lesson learnt? As a community are we are too passive? Should we be putting more pressure and accountability on the elected leaders? Something is missing. It shouldn’t get to this point.

There is nothing more important than our health.

Temporary full expensing State Quarantine Caps Impeding Horticultue Industry The Federal Government is working on solutions to address the chronic labour shortage in the horticulture for jobs such fruit picking, planting and packing.

Member for Longman Terry Young held an Agriculture forum on April 16 with Agriculture Minister David Littleproud which was dominated by discussion on how to solve the labour shortage that is crippling parts of the industry.

“I’ve visited farms in my electorate of Longman and heard from growers who say they simply cannot get enough people to fill these jobs,” Mr Young said.

“My view is that we’ve got unemployed people here in Australia, why don’t we put Aussies in there?

“But the reality is that they just don’t want to do these jobs.”

Mr Young said he attended a Pacific Labour Scheme meeting earlier in the year and learned there were 25,000 people ready to come over from Pacific nations to work.

“We understand and agree that keeping people safe must be the first priority and for our government, this will always be the case,” he said.

“But I fail to see how allowing workers in from countries who haven’t had a COVID 19 case for almost a year is not keeping people safe.

“What about the mental health of farmers who can’t get workers and may go broke?

Common sense must prevail.”

Gavin Sturr from Pinata Farms told the forum that he is operating on less than 50 per cent of his usual staff numbers.

“In my view the seasonal worker program is the only answer in the short-medium term,” Mr Stuff said.

“We need 20,000 Pacific Islanders here tomorrow, but this is not happening because of State quarantines.”

Mr Sturr said the States’ solution of onfarm quarantine was not realistic.

“Businesses will do it if we have to but it’s not going to get 20,000 people on the ground in the next couple of months,” he said.

Minister Littleproud said the Morrison Government pushed for a national strategy to deal with the issue, but three states wouldn’t sign up: Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania.

“They said they’re not interested,” Mr Littleproud said.

“States could solve the issue of labour shortages themselves, by letting in pre-vetted visa-ready workers from 10 Pacific Island nations.

“The Federal Government has rubber stamped up to 26,000 workers, but it is the responsibility of the States to now allow them in.”

“The states are the ones that imposed these caps on people that come in from overseas, and they are the ones that wanted to own that quarantine responsibility.

“The states must work with industry to bring people in and make sure they have the necessary quarantine plans in place.”

There is a new entry to the world of deductible expenses that everyone needs to be made aware.

The new rule is called Temporary Full Expensing and applies to businesses being able to deduct the full business portion of deductible assets. The value of the asset has no cost threshold.

To date we have had the Instant Asset write off wherein the cost of assets purchased could be claimed in the year of purchase. Starting at $20,000, it moved to $50,000, then $100,000 and now $150,000. This remains available for any entity wishing to apply the instant asset write off allowance.

However, entities are restricted in their eligibility based on turn-over, and must claim the full amount of the cost of the asset up to $150,000.

The temporary full expensing (TFE) can be utilised by any entity with an aggregated turnover of up to $50M. A broader range of business will be able to fall under the criteria.

However, this TFE is only a temporary measure and any asset being claimed – no matter how much – must be first used or installed and ready for use between 6th October 2020 and 30th June 2022. If the asset was installed for a taxable purpose on 5th October, only the instant asset write off would be available.

A choice can be made to opt-out of the TFE for an income year on an asset-by-asst basis as long as you are not using simplified depreciation.

Statement from Shadow Minister for the Prevention of Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Amanda Camm

Silence is deadly, compliance isn’t Landlords are being encouraged to act now as the deadline for residential rental properties to comply with smoke alarm legislation looms.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Mark Ryan said from 1 January 2022, residential rental properties would be required to have interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, in hallways and on every level.

“The law applies when new leases are commenced or an existing lease is extended, but we urge all property owners to transition to the new safer alarms as soon as possible.

“It’s simple - smoke alarms save lives and interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms are the safest option available,” Mr Ryan said.

“This is about landlords putting the safety of their tenants first while also protecting their property and rental income.”

Mr Ryan said residential rental properties that didn’t comply with the legislation would be unable to be rented out from January next year.

“This legislation isn’t new, it was intro-

duced in 2017. We gave landlords until January 2022 to ensure they had time to make changes to their property,” Mr Ryan said.

“If you haven’t made the necessary changes to your rental property now is the time. Complying with the legislation is not optional, it’s the law.”

Antonia Mercorella, CEO of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland, expressed the importance of smoke alarms.

“Smoke alarm compliance is an important aspect of property management in Queensland real estate, in particular as the deadline for adherence to new legislative requirements fast approaches,” Ms Mercorella said.

“With only a handful of months left before every rental property must comply, make no mistake – there will be no extension to the deadline. Now isn’t the time to compromise on compliance – be ready by 1 January, 2022 or lose the right to rent your property.”

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms were designed to give residents extra time to escape a house fire.

“Research tells us that children are less

likely to wake to the sound of a smoke alarm. This makes it important that adults in the home can hear them,” Commissioner Leach said.

“In modern homes where the parent’s bedroom is often in another part of the house, they may not hear the smoke alarm in the children’s bedrooms.

“Interconnection means that the smoke alarms communicate with each other so that if one smoke alarm activates in one room all the smoke alarms activate, making it more likely that everyone will have the best chance of getting out before they are overcome by smoke.”

Commissioner Leach reminded Queenslanders every home in the state would be required to install interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms by January 2027.

“Don’t wait to protect yourself, your family and your property. Everyone should make the change as soon as possible,” he said.

The LNP welcomes the next step of the taskforce.

After discussions with stakeholders and survivors with lived experience, I strongly encourage the taskforce to investigate ways to ensure victims have safe avenues to provide a submission.

I recognise that many victims may not be able to safely have their voice heard, nor want to relive the trauma of their lived experience.

We need to ensure victims who may not have access to devices or a safe way of being able to speak up are supported.

While the taskforce takes up this valuable work, the LNP will continue to ask the government not to delay reforms that could happen now and wouldn’t compromise the work of the taskforce.

More support for Travel Agents in Longman Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said travel agents in the electorate would benefit from sharing in additional funding support of $130 million from the Coalition Government.

Mr Young said local travel agents should apply for funding support in Round 2 of the COVID-19 Consumer Travel Support Program, which opens later this month.

“The Coalition Government has committed $258 million to support our travel agents through the COVID-19 Consumer Travel Support Program,” Mr Young said.

“Our Government provided $128 million in Round One to support some 3000 travel agents who continued to serve their customers.

“We are now providing additional support via Round 2 and I encourage local travel agents to check their eligibility and apply for funding.

“Our support for travel agents complements the $1.2 billion aviation and tourism support package which was designed to get domestic tourists spending and follows the successful JobKeeper program.

“We can all support our local travel agents in Longman by using their services when booking a holiday this year.”

Eligible travel agents and tour operators in Longman who have received a payment under Round One may be entitled to a second payment, ranging

between $7,500 and $100,000. To be eligible the business must: •

Have been operating a travel agent, inbound tour operator or tour wholesaler business prior to the announcement of the closure of international borders, and are continuing to operate that business; • Have a turnover of between $50,000 and $20 million (or between $500,000 and $200 million Total Transaction Value - TTV) for the 2019 calendar year; and • Have been in receipt of the JobKeeper extension (28 September 2020 to 28 March 2021).

To ensure equity, businesses found to have received a payment based on TTV in Round One that was greater than they would otherwise have received if the payments for Round One and Two were calculated on turnover, will not be eligible for a Round Two payment.

Close to Heart, Miles Apart Amelia Strazdins There is no doubt that over the past twelve months the whole world has been trialled and tested. It has been through family and support systems that we have been able to make these uncertain times a little easier to cope with. During this time, we have seen the importance of family, those formed because of blood and circumstance. International family day brings attention to the importance of these people within our lives and the roles they play in supporting us. Unfortunately, this year, the 15th of May will bring with it a solum reminder of the impacts the pandemic has had on our loved ones.

Across the globe there are thousands of families separate by boarders, lockdowns and quarantine. Living in Australia we remain extremely lucky with eased restrictions and the ability to travel inter-state.

However, there are still many Aussies stuck overseas desperately missing their families and unable to get home. For many of us, it seems as if the worst of the pandemic is over, but we forget the pain caused to many by long distance separation. Although many have been able to keep in touch, this luxury has worn thin as timelines remain unclear and international travel is still placed firmly off the cards. For those of us who are able to hug those important to us, this day serves as a reminder to appreciate the freedom we are currently experiencing in our country.

It seems much like everything else, celebrating family will look a little different this year. Zoom calls alongside family Skype sessions are the go-to of choice to reconnect with those separated across the world.

And although many are still unable to reunite, families in Australia and New Zealand are some of the lucky few who have been able to travel home to see loved ones. April 19th was perhaps one of the most significant days in a long time. The 19th marked the opening of the Trans-Tasman bubble, allowing travel between Australia and New Zealand. Media outlets were flooded with videos and stories of tear-jerking reunions and heartfelt hugs.

Although it may not be a day that many usually recognise let alone celebrate it allows us the time to give thanks and properly appreciate our families, near or far. Within Australia we are so incredibly fortunate that we are not in lockdown but also are able to gather in larger congregations. Recognising family does not only mean close family but also extended. With the freedoms that we are afford currently living in Australia we must take the opportunity to celebrate family to fullest extent.

Whether that be a Sunday barbeque, a walk along the beach or something special to you family some time with your loved ones. For those unable to travel home to see their families, spread across the globe, we send you support and hope for a joyous reunion in the near future.

Exciting developments for U3A Beachmere. Our hard- working communications officer Chris Sutton has spent the past four months implementing the MyU3A system for U3A Beachmere. This has taken a wee bit longer than normal as MyU3A support personnel are based in Melbourne, and were unable to travel to Queensland to deliver training because of Covid. “On behalf of all U3A Beachmere members we thank Chris for her persistence in making it all come to fruition” Barb said.

The system allows our members to renew their membership and enrol in classes on-line. Anyone wishing to join U3A Beachmere can apply for membership by filling in the membership form on-line. All you need to do is visit the U3A Beachmere website and follow the menu to “Join U3A Beachmere”. EFT facility is available for online enrolments and membership fees.

Our office, located at Beachmere Hub, is open Monday to Friday from 8.30 am to 12.30pm on Term days. Term Two 19th April – 25th June. You will receive a very warm welcome if you pop in for face-to-face registration in classes and membership applications.

Term Two is now well underway with a variety of classes happening each day. You can always check for a casual vacancy in any class or register for one of the workshops starting later in the Term. Community Turns out for Anzac Day Service Beachmere certainly turned out for it’s annual ANZAC Day service this year with perhaps the biggest crowd the village has seen.

Federal, State and Council representatives were in attendance to hear Reviewing Officer and Guest Speaker Lieutenant Commander Scott Dowd address the very large gathering.

Finishing his speech with the count of lives lost across army, navy and air force, his words of “mateship, honour, courage and resilience” resonated throughout the crowd.

Padre Ross Konowalenko, surrounded by her family, dedicated a plaque to local Beachmere woman May Morgan.

May enlisted as an aircraftswoman at just 19 years of age and served in Adelaide and Bundaberg before returning to Brisbane. Her plaque sits with that of her husband David who was injured in the North Australian campaign. As local residents for many years the Morgan family continue to have a place in the heart of Beachmere.

Beachmere’s population may be on the rise, but it is the solid and continued growth in community spirit, so evident on occasions such as this, which keeps this small, bayside village connected and involved.

Secure, reliable supply a priority for Queensland’s energy future The Palaszczuk Government has welcomed public consultation on proposed reforms to the National Electricity Market, which will help shape the future of Queensland’s energy supply.

Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the Energy Security Board’s (ESB) suite of potential reform pathways provides an important opportunity for the Palaszczuk Government to future-proof Queensland’s energy supply and workforce.

“We know Queensland is blessed with a reliable mix of renewables and more traditional forms of electricity generation which, combined with a robust publicly-owned distribution network, powers our communities, our industries and our neighbouring states,” Mr de Brenni said.

“I am keen to hear what energy sector participants have to say on these important proposals, which will be considered by the Energy National Cabinet Reform Committee in coming months.

“A critical element of the ESB paper is the reform of essential system services, which means that our current thermal generators could be transformed to help stabilise intermittent renewable energy.

“This will keep the lights on during peak usage, while ensuring the ongoing livelihoods of generation workers and the

communities in which they live.

“Queensland needs significantly more generation to meet our aspirations for growth of our manufacturing and resources sectors, and our publicly-owned assets will play a key role in Queensland’s future energy mix. There are no plans to decommission any of our generation assets in Queensland ahead of their time.”

Mr de Brenni said owning major power assets provides the Palaszczuk Government with real options to shape the future look of the state’s grid as Queensland works to meet its 50 percent renewable energy target by 2030.

“This public ownership also gives us extra ability to provide the National Electricity Market with an ongoing supply of cheap and reliable power while supporting essential regional jobs,” he said.

“We’ve also committed to unlocking three Renewable Energy Zones and to build the associated transmission infrastructure to support investment and renewable development in North, Central and Southern Queensland.

“An affordable and reliable energy supply is crucial to a post-COVID economic recovery, and we’ll continue to be guided by the Energy Security Board in our future energy economy.”

Marine Rescue Services buoyed by $470k boost Queensland boating and marine enthusiasts will be safer on the water following the announcement of a $470,000 grant program for Volunteer Marine Rescue Squadrons and Coast Guard Flotillas to support emergency response capability.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP, said the new investment would enhance marine rescue services across the State.

“To complement our $35 million commitment to establish an integrated single marine rescue service following the recommendations of the Blue Water Review, this grant program will directly support frontline units and relieve the fundraising burden on volunteers,” Mr Ryan said.

“This program will provide funding to the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association (AVCGA) and Volunteer Marine Rescue Association Queensland (VMRAQ) to administer grants of $10,000 to each of Queensland’s Volunteer Marine Rescue Squadrons and Coast Guard Flotillas.

“These grants can be used to fund facility maintenance and enhancement or to purchase necessary equipment and services to support marine rescue operations.

“Our dedicated marine rescue volunteers have long provided a vital service keeping Queenslanders safe and we want to ensure they are supported in the work they do.

“Individual squadrons and flotillas will be empowered to consider their local needs and priorities as a part of the new funding.

“The investment will do double duty with valuable dollars being directed to Queensland businesses as marine rescue units purchase much-needed equipment.”

Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association State Manager, Mr Peter Smith welcomed the much-needed additional support from Government.

“Our AVCGA Flotillas will directly benefit from these grants and the volunteers will welcome the assistance to continue to provide the high level of services to the community,” Mr Smith said.

Volunteer Marine Rescue Association of Queensland President, Dr Graham Kingston welcomed the additional support for Volunteer Marine Rescue.

“This additional funding is recognition of the Government's ongoing commitment to improving the sustainability of the Volunteer Marine Rescue sector,” Dr Kingston said.

“Ongoing work with the implementation of the Blue Water Review is further evidence of that commitment.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach said the additional funding would make a difference to marine rescue services in Queensland.

“It will support the provision of marine search and rescue resources including radio communications and safety equipment and foster improved community awareness of safety issues in the blue water environment,” Mr Leach said.

“We’re a state with more than 250,000 registered boats and watercraft. That’s one for every 19 residents.

“We also welcome millions of tourists each year who are lured by our sun, sand and spectacular waterways.

“This is why it’s important to build capacity and confidence for Queensland residents and tourists to enjoy what our state has to offer.”

The additional funds will be provided to the AVCGA and VMRAQ via long standing agreements with QFES in the forthcoming financial year with funding to be expended by the end of June 2022.

Bribie islanders gain improved access to centrelink, medicare services

Beachmere locals positive about Beachmere Road Upgrades

The Bribie Island community will have improved access to Centrelink and Medicare services with the opening of a Services Australia Agent on the island.

Minister for Government Services the Hon Linda Reynolds CSC said the Agent would help people access government services including Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support, and have self-service facilities.

“My colleague, the Member for Longman, Terry Young, has strongly supported improved access to government services for Bribie Island residents,” Minister Reynolds said.

“Services Australia conducted an Expression of Interest process to identify a host organisation to provide the Agent service.

I am delighted that the Bribie Island Neighbourhood Centre in Bellara begun delivering the service on Monday 19 April 2021.

“People will be able to visit the Agent and use self-service equipment, scan, print and upload documents and receive advice on how to register for and use our digital services with confidence.

“Increasingly people are conducting their business with us online and Agent staff receive extensive training to help the community access these digital self-ser-

vice options.”

Mr Young said he was pleased the Bribie Island community would have better access to key government services through the new Agent.

“I’m so please that this service will be up and running on Monday,” Mr Young said.

“Many people on the island have told me what a massive difference this service would mean for them and I’m delighted to get it delivered.

Mr Young also said “The agent(s) will offer face-to-face support for inquires relating to Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support so Bribie residents don’t have to leave the island.”

A community consultation process has commenced to determine the recommended future upgrades to Beachmere Road between Bribie Island Rd and Biggs Avenue.

This main thoroughfare to Beachmere has received funding for planning of the first stage of upgrades and the Dept of Transport and Main Roads recently launched an online survey to garner feedback from the people who use the road.

In addition to the online survey, TMR staff organised a community consultation afternoon at the Beachmere Hub. Over fifty residents attended and were encouraged to express their opinions and raise their concerns about the road and what was most important for the initial upgrade to assist the planning team to investigate the capacity, safety and efficiency of the road.

An amount of $775,000 will be spent on the planning study with a further $7m available for what has been referred to as the “initial funding” for the upgrade.

The planning study is expected to be completed by December 2021 and the community will be advised the outcome of the planning study with another round of consultation in the community.

Community Men’s Shed Bribie Island helps remember our returned soldiers Recently the Men’s Shed Committee was approached by Churches of Christ in Queensland’s Bribie Island Aged Care Service , who asked if the Men’s Shed would be interested in creating an Anzac Display for the Bongaree facility. Taking up the challenge resulted in weeks of work tracing, cutting, sanding and painting World War One Soldier silhouettes, some complete with lighting. The installation started receiving enormous accolades during construction, even before it was finished and installed.

Now in place, the Anzac Display can be seen by the service’s residents, in the aged care service gardens and main reception area. Bribie Island Men’s Shed members have been extremely proud to undertake this commission and particularly taking on a project to honour older village residents who will no doubt be touched by the fantastic display. Remembering those Australians and New Zealanders who sacrificed so much to protect our amazing heritage and way of life. Not forgetting those who have followed and are following in their footsteps.

Another recent project the shed helped with was at Christmas time. The members made wooden toy trains which were donated to the Ronald McDonald House. A great buzz and honour to be involved in.

is an official member of the Australian Men’s Shed Association which operates across our nation. Based at 42 Foley Street, Bongaree. The Men’s Shed is behind the Church of Christ. Members’ meet on Wednesdays in a great environment, complete with substantial space and equipment. Mainly catering for woodworking projects Members’ come from all walks of life. If you looked inside you might see several men making furniture, perhaps restoring items, fixing things for community organisations. You will see teabags, coffee cups and a comfortable area where men can sit and talk.

Men’s Sheds not only provide diverse memberships, but also provide a platform for men’s physical, emotional, and mental health. This in turn contributes to the sharing of skills, making friends, fellowship, and networking.

Interested parties who would like to see what they do and consider joining, can have one of their famous guided tours any Wednesday morning between 9:00am and 11:00am. Visitors must have closed in shoes and follow the latest Covid rulings.

Gardners Falls Maleny in Full Flight after Rains

Gardners Falls Maleny in Full Flight Travelling to Maleny from Bribie Island and surrounds takes 50 minutes up Steve Irwin Way to Landsborough then up the mountain cutting. About two kilometres before Maleny is the Obi Rd turnoff to Gardners Falls on your right.

Gardner’s Falls are a nice set of cascading waterfalls and waterholes along the Obi Obi Creek. Very easy to access - you park right on the edge of the creek, this is a really popular spot for a swim or just for a bit of sightseeing.

Upon parking at the small carpark, it’s only a couple of minutes’ walk to the cascading falls. Above the falls there are lots of large, exposed rocks that you can wander over and explore – however take care as these can get quite slippery. The water falls into a large-ish waterhole which is great for swimming. It has a rocky base (which again, can be a little slippery) and at the downstream end of the waterhole it is reasonably shallow so the kids can play around in this area.

Closer to the actual waterfall, the water is deep and you will see lots of people either jumping off the top of the falls (it’s only a couple of metres) or even swinging out of trees.

After recent rains, extra care needs to be taken here as there have been several drownings at the falls as recently as January 2021, when a 40 year old Nepalese man jumped into the water when it was flowing fast and didn’t resurface. The left side of the falls provides the deepest water and the right side is much shallower with rocks beneath the surface so take care here at any time.

Under normal conditions this is a very safe place to swim and explore and gets quite crowded on hot days. If you find the place over run when you arrive, the locals say that nearby Scott’s Road provides access to more deserted rock pools if you are looking for solitude while swimming.

Gardners Falls is part of the land that was bought by William Gardner around 1910

and he spent the next 16 years clearing the land to create three share farms and the family kept the estate until 1962 and it is now owned by the Sunshine Coast Council.

Along the road to the falls is Spicers Tamarind Retreat a small and exclusive Asian-inspired getaway which was purchased in 2007 by Spicers Retreats founder, Jude Turner. The Tamarind’s prior owner and renowned Australian master of Thai cuisine, Paul Blain, had purchased the property in 1998. It had originally been owned by the Gardner family. On site, there had been a school house to cater for the large family, as well as a cheese factory.

Paul had a vision to transform the property and rehabilitate the landscape.

He built five rooms in the style of Asian longhouses to accommodate guests, and set up a restaurant which doubled as a cooking school. The Tamarind opened for business in early 2000. Later that year, it was awarded the Australian Gourmet Traveller Award of Excellence for Australian Gastronomic Travel.

During those early days, over 8500 endemic rainforest trees were planted across the property, creating the lush surrounds that the Spicers Tamarind Retreat enjoys today.

Encircled by a stream, the longhouses and restaurant’s peaceful atmosphere is heightened by the sound of running water and the well-established, sub-tropical landscapes. After Spicers purchased The Tamarind, Paul stayed on as General Manager until 2010. During that period, Spicers also bought the neighbouring seven acre property, and added 6 two-bedroom pavilions, the spa, and a manager’s house.

There is also a two-bedroom cabin suitable for people with disabilities.

The renovated building now combines the Tamarind cooking school and conference area which hosts the annual Tamarind Asian Food Festival in February each year.

So whether you are after a swim in a mountain stream, the sound of a thundering waterfall, a world class Asian meal, a stay in a relaxing retreat of all of the above Gardners Falls may be the place for your next trip into Bribie’s hinterland.

Canberra Needs More Wise Heads NOT more Uni Grads Recent shameful shenanigans in Parliament House involving sexual misconduct all relate to the hiring of immature and inexperienced politicos and in many cases too much alcohol.

Apart from creating embarrassing headlines and personal heartache for many these types of people are really the last ones we should have advising Ministers of the Commonwealth on issues affecting every Australian every day.

Over the last 20 years there has been a pull away from Ministers getting advice from experienced public servants, post graduate academics with real world experience and semi-retired ex politicians and policy makers. Instead they now fill their offices with over ambitious yes men and women who are fresh out of university politics or the union movement and have never achieved anything in life.

These apparatchiks have never held down a real job, made anything that lasts or served the community in any way.

They create nothing. The comedy the Hollowmen is very instructive in the inner

working of Canberra of late and worth a look. Art imitates life well here I think.

The modern day political adviser wants to align themselves with powerful mentors and think only of the time they will sit on the other side of the desk as Minister or want to be career ministerial staffers.

Just think our next crop of politicians will come from this rabble. They will represent us not knowing what it’s like to be a real worker in the real world or a manager or be responsible for success or failure of important functions in society.

The dramatic reduction in public servants in Ministers offices has meant a reduction in people who are experienced in public sector probity, administration and policy making. Few have the relationships to harness the strengths of the public service to the benefit of their Minister. Many believe the public service is part of the problem taking an adversarial role in dealing with them, tying up our well paid officials in politics and games of attrition.

A semi-retired 60 something policy maker or ex politician who has been around the block a few times, managed people at senior levels, run a business, provided services to citizens, consulted stakeholders and negotiated solutions to complex issues would be perfect to work as a political advisor. Not many of those around Canberra at the moment and George Street, Brisbane is just as bad.

At a time when people over 45 are flat out getting a job in favour of younger workers this example of the folly of this approach couldn’t get any higher or more serious.

Experience counts, always has and always will.

Sandstone Neighbours Get Creative for ANZAC Day Neighbours Jill and Noel Promnitz and Peter and Ann Morgan marked ANZAC Day 2020 with a flag raising ceremony at Peters house at dawn with the National Service on the radio with many others in the Sandstone Point street coming out. COVID restrictions did not prevent the ceremony from going ahead but did

Jill Promnitz, Peter Morgan and the Unknown Soldier require some innovation by the locals.

At the time Peter remarked to Jill that all that was missing was an unknown soldier to set the scene and Jill got her artistic ideas going after that. She had seen the craft of wire sculpture online and set about teaching herself to work with the medium starting off making a horse for a cart. After a few trial and errors on that project she started on Peters Unknown Soldier working on it off and on for around three months.

Peter and Jill share the ANZAC story even though Jill was born across the ditch in Tolaga Bay near Gisborn in New Zealand and being of the Ngati Porou Maori people moving here in 1986. Peter served in Vietnam as an Engineer in the Royal Australian Engineers 1 Field Squadron and Jill’s two brothers in law served in Vietnam in the New Zealand Army Corp.

In April Jill presented Peter with her art work of the Unknown Soldier which was mounted next to the flagpole in Peter’s garden ready for ANZAC Day 2021. This remarkable piece has attracted many locals to stop and remember and ask about the artwork.

A plaque commemorating the fallen has been added rounding off this example of ANZAC spirit and friendship amongst neighbours in our local area. Well done Jill.

Recently on Bribie Island a group of shops on Benabrow Avenue were broken into last month and it seems all the thieves wanted was cash and not equipment.

David Crisafulli Leader of the Opposition on Bribie Island live on Sky News last Friday.

The cost to our local business owners is huge when they are broken into, repairs on the damage the thieves have created can amount to thousands of dollars. While most businesses and homes now have camera’s installed, the thieves are wearing hoodies to cover their faces. THEY WILL BE CAUGHT IF THEY CONTINUE REGARDLESS OF WHAT THEY WEAR. It’s hard enough surviving in a small business let alone COMMON THEIVES breaking into their businesses, causing major damage to their shops, and the community is sick of them getting away with it.

The thieves are only after cash it seems, they can’t get away with equipment these days with serial numbers all recorded, the amount of damage they do to break in to get into local business petty cash tin is costing all of us.

A word of warning – “Thieves be aware, we are watching you and we will ensure you get caught if you continue to destroy our local businesses in this way. There is no cash on any premises these days, you will be caught”

Statement from Shadow Minister for Police and Corrective Services Dale Last re youth justice laws This is an important bill in response to the youth crime problems across the length and breadth of Queensland.

But what we’ve seen from this Labor Government is denial and a refusal to adopt, or even consider, reinstating the offence of breach of bail for young offenders.

Labor would have us believe that they’re on top of the problem, that they have the programs in place to address it, that juvenile crime is reducing in Queensland.

Clearly, that’s not the case.

We have a number of hotspot areas across Queensland that are being torn apart by these young offenders, and police are crying out for more assistance, particularly in terms of legislation.

The offence of breach of bail must be restored.

What Labor has proposed this week is a very small step in what is going to be a long journey in terms of addressing youth crime in Queensland in both the short and long term.

If the Minister was serious about addressing youth crime in Queensland, he would have come into Parliament at last sitting week with a fistful of amendments which reflects the evidence given at the public hearing across Queensland in relation to this bill.

This needs big decisions, this needs a real commitment, this needs some tough action.

(Meet Jill on the floor at Mitre 10) Jill is a horticulturist and has an Associate Diploma in Horticulture and has worked in the horticulture industry at various nurseries round the greater Brisbane area for 30yrs.

Hi, and welcome to my first writings for our local paper. I feel very privileged and will do my best to fulfill your trust in me.

I hope to make gardening a happy and positive experience for you, As some of you know my mother passed away a little over a year ago. So, I thought I would dedicate this article to the Mothers and Grandmothers out there in the gardening world. One of my favourite memories is my Mum making my birthday cake. A sponge cake with fresh cream and strawberries. Most purists, I think, would agree with me mothing goes better than strawberries and fresh cream.

AUTUMN/WINTER Roses make wonderful cut flowers

LOVE IS IN THE AIR Roses are wonderful cut flowers. They are deciduous shrubs growing between 30cm to 2 meters plus. The best time to plant is in Winter. Prune your roses in July.

Reducing their height by approximately half. Using clean secateurs making the cut 5mm above a bud on a 45-degree angle.

Strawberries are mentioned in Roman times, and even Henry VIII lost his head over strawberries. Strawberries love the sun. Growing healthy plants is good soil preparation with cow manure and compost, mounding up the garden beds, ensuring good drainage, as strawberries don’t like wet fee. They do like a soil that is slightly acidic.

Strawberries start producing runners in January and these are planted out in March. Fertilizing with a liquid Fish or Seaweed once a fortnight will keep them happy and healthy. They also grow well in large pots, using a good premium potting mix. For those growing in pots a liquid feed is required once a month. Mulch – the garden doctor – use either Sugar Cane or Lucerne giving them a nice bed and keeping them off the soil and away from pests.

There are good garden varieties that can be purchased from garden nurseries. Also, popular is the little sweet Alpine strawberry, small in stature but producing bags of flavour. Strawberries are high in Vitamin C, also, iron, calcium and phosphorus.

Replant into a newly prepared bed every 3 years.

Good Companions – catnip, chives and thyme Bad Companions – tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes and mint.

Plant in a sunny, open position. For established roses use cow manure around the plant and when you see the first flush of new growth apply some Sulphate of Potash. Feed with Rose Food in early Spring and mid-Summer. A tip prune in February is helpful. If you are cutting the blooms to place in a vase, this is a natural prune. For a tip prune, count down to 3 leaves on the stem, and cut above the third leaf.

CHAMPAGNE COCKTAIL

Mulch to keep the roots cool and moist. A good deep watering is better than a light sprinkle. AVOID wetting the foliage as this encourages fungal diseases.

There is all manner of roses from, Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, Standards, Climbing and Patio Roses.

There are also Special Releases. One of these is Mother’s Love. A profusion of beautifully formed double and sweetly fragrant blooms. A delightful vase specimen. Companion plant for roses is Lavender, which it is said increases the scent of the rose.

BETTER THAN A BUNCH OF FLOWERS With Mother’s Day fast approaching, living potted Chrysanthemums will last inside the home for at least 2 weeks or more if kept in good light and kept moist.

Thought to have been cultivated in China as early as 500BC. Chrysanthemums like a well-drained well composted soil. Use a complete fertilizer 2 weeks before planting. When transferring the potted plants to the garden, cut off the old flower heads and remove the entire root ball from the pot. They can then be planted directly into the garden. Mulch and then fertilize

DECORATIVE EVERGREENS Azaleas – flowering in late Winter and early Summer. These are acid loving plants. They can be planted in shade, filtered sunlight and sun.

Azaleas have tight fibrous root systems.

When transplanting ‘score’ the root ball to encourage good establishment in the garden. Don’t plant too deep. Being acid loving plants, use an Azalea and Camillea planting mix. Peat Moss can also be dug in. Water at ground level not overhead, especially when flowering, as it can damage the flower and cause petal blight.

If growing in pots, Peat Moss can be used as a mulch.

Azaleas should be feed in late February, and then no fertilizing till October. If lace bug appears, don’t bother spraying until

BRIBIE ISLAND OFFSHORE FISHING REPORT April 2021

Winter is coming... and so are the Snapper! In fact they’re already here.

We are starting to see the traditional winter weather patterns emerge with stable mornings influenced by light, dry westerly breezes. We missed out on these morning “glass outs” last year but it seems this winter is shaping up to be a lot more stable.

The large rain falls we saw at the beginning of April flushed huge amounts of nutrients from our rivers and creeks out to sea which was a real “shot in the arm” for our local fishery with large numbers of fish being attracted to and following these nutrient trails. We had already started to see some quality Snapper showing up early at the end of March and this boost in nutrients has turned up at the perfect time to entice them into the bay and on to the shallow offshore reefs in better numbers, earlier than usual.

Snapper feed primarily at sunrise and sunset. A super early, pre-dawn start is essential to make sure you’re at the right place at the right time when targeting that morning Snapper bite period. Finding the fish is a similar theory to the one mentioned last month for pelagics, except instead of high current pronounced pressure edges you’re looking for similar, less pronounced, underwater pressure edges holding baitfish. This basically just means fishing the “up current” side of a piece of structure. My preferred method of targeting Snapper is with soft plastics in the 5” - 7” range rigged on a 3/8oz or 1/2oz jighead with a 5/0 – 7/0 hook. Fished up off the bottom a few meters with a slow jigging action broken up with long sink periods. The lighter your tackle the more bites you will get, but also the more fish you will lose, it’s a catch 22.

Another popular and proven method is to anchor up near the structure and start a burly trail, bringing the fish to you, then “floating” a lightly weighted pilchard or squid bait down the burly trail. Snapper will swim up quite high in the water column to grab a bait or lure and are often caught much higher in the water column than other similar demersal species. I’ve seen many a floating pilly intended for a pelagic get eaten by a Snapper.

Still plenty of Longtail Tuna around in the bay and to the north with schools of 10kg+ fish being quite common. They were temporarily pushed offshore with the rain early in the month but soon followed that nutrient trail back in and at times they’ve even been spotted feeding on

bait right up into the passage. And of course, those challenging big Spanish Mackerel are still around in plentiful numbers. They’re BIG trophy fish.

I was recently informed I’d be a guest aboard Big Cat Reality Fishing Charters on an expedition 520km offshore to a remote coral atoll in the Cato trough called Kenn Reef. Courtesy of Escape with ET and Anaconda stores. We’ll be chasing monster class pelagics such as Dogtooth Tuna and GT’s and will certainly make for some interesting viewing. I’ll keep you updated on what will be 1 of the best Escape with ET episodes yet.

$267k boost for local clubs and groups

An additional $267,000 has been offered to 25 local groups across three different community funding streams provided by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

This includes the first recipients of the new ‘Regional Economic Development Grant’, specifically to help community organisations advance the Moreton Bay Region economy.

Mayor Peter Flannery said it was a practical way for Council to invest in the local community and economy by helping to support projects such as upgrading sports facilities, to buying new club equipment and or hosting community and business events.

“This will include replacing roofs, installing solar, providing air conditioning systems, upgrading facilities to get better outcomes for our community,” Mayor Flannery said.

“It will also support fantastic local activities such as mental health programs, an equestrian trade show, Indigenous sporting and cultural events and the development of training resources to address domestic violence.

“Feedback from previous grant recipients tells us our biannual Community Activity and Community Facilities Grants are

making a huge difference at a grassroots level.

“And for the first time we’re supporting local groups with their business initiatives through the Regional Economic Development Grant, including the Australian Federation of Business and Professional Women Inc and the Multicultural Association of Caboolture.

“With so many grants now on offer, it’s a good time to register with our new Moreton Bay Region Finding Finder - the one-stop-shop to find funding to help with your organisation’s needs.

“The platform brings a range of grants from different funders to one central location, helping groups quickly search and identify relevant grant and funding opportunities.

“In fact, it’s not too late to apply for Local Community Support Grant; where we offer $3,000 per application and a maximum of $5,000 per financial year to support local community, cultural, sporting and environmental projects.
