The Federal Government has put out a statement regarding a Bribie Island office for Centrelink and Medicare. This will make a huge difference to locals not having to do the 20 minute drive to Caboolture.

Australia Day was celebrated by all over the region and a group of Bongaree neighbours have been celebrating under the same tree in their local park for over 25 years. Also Residents in Beachmere narrowly avoid a sink hole. This is a snippet of some of this issues articles and there is much more.

Dear Editor I guess like most I am fed up with trying to stay safe from Covid - don't go there or here, watch who you bump into wear a mask etc.

It will be nice when we can go out and about without any worry.

For the past 12 months the neighbors in our end of "the Court" get together on a Friday at 4.30 pm and have nibbles a drink and a chat, it is very pleasant and enjoy each other's company for a couple of hours.

I recommend it to others to have a weekly get together and support each other.

Regards Farley Folks, It’s easier to change the words than the date, so let’s just change the name to Australia Invasion Day and make everybody happy.

Now that we are one, any of us that feel that we were better off before the white fellas came with their wheels, electricity, houses, indoor plumbing, hospitals, etc., can go and live, and practice our cultural heritage, on one of the Aboriginal Reserves that are dotted around the country, some of them quite large. Clothing and insect repellant optional, but the Koori Kilt is a wonderful invention for the hot and humid areas.

Thank you Matt Owen for your article “ 13 years later” (Surrounds Jan 13, 2021) We need more articles that review the effectiveness of organi z ations that are supposed to be serving the public. Especially organizations like councils that are doing this with our tax dollars.

As your article says, Amalgamation was thrust upon us by the Beattie Government with no public input.

All sorts of claims were made about the benefits that would come from Amalgamation and I am sure if we asked the politicians involved, they would make all sorts of glowing claims of success. I will leave that to them to tell us about all the benefits we have all gained.

But as a humble taxpayer, here my assessments of three areas of MBRC’s performance s ince Amalgamation: Financial: Amalgamation promised to consolidate the resources of those councils being combined and bring efficiencies in use of things like equipment and workforce. This would result, it was claimed, in improved services and reduced c osts which could be passed on to ratepayers in reduced taxes. However, MBRC has increased property taxes at a rate greater than inflation virtually every year. In those odd years when increases were at or below inflation, MBRC has made up for this with i ncreases well above inflation for service charges (like waste removal), increased “back door” taxes through Unity Water, or new taxes like the “ infrastructure tax and a canal tax.

Planning: Amalgamation promised to enhance the capacity and abi lity of councils to take on difficult roles like planning for the future.

Readers will remember that around 2014 2015 MBRC did come out with a new plan which created much controversy. MBRC even passed a unanimous vote of no confidence in Lisa France (t he then Member for Pumicestone) because she opposed the plan. But in the end, the new Plan was approved and ratepayers assumed it would set the standards for future development. However, the same Council went ahead and approved guidelines for the “next g eneration neighbourhood precinct”. This has routinely been invoked to approve non compliant development applications. Rightly or wrongly,

MBRC has developed the reputation of approving just about anything that comes before it regardless of whether it com plies and regardless of whether it can be supported by existing infrastructure. This lack of compliance was raised as an election issue in the last local government elections and certain promises were made about ensuring compliance by the new council. But it is difficult to see if anything has changed. It is sometimes difficult to see why Council even bothered approving its master plan in the first place.

Secrecy: Amalgamation promised a greater capacity and ability for councils to reach out to the p ublic to keep them informed of activities that would affect them. But h as this happened? I was concerned some time ago about a council decision to remove some trees in my area that I thought was unnecessary. I was assured by very senior Council staff that all sorts of reports existed showing how unhealthy these trees were and there was no option but to remove them. So I asked to see the report(s). I was told I would need to raise a Right to Information ( request for that. Which I did. That cost m e $ Then I was told it would cost me an additional $250 ( for a copy. Seeing the work was actually on State lands I sought advice from a State Government ombudsman. When the ombudsman found out I was dealing with MBRC, the ombudsman commented that MBRC was one of the most secretive councils in Queensland they had to deal with.

It was suggested I contact my State MP and get him to obtain a copy of the report(s). Which I did. But my MP was advised by another senior Council staff member that no such reports existed. So I discussed this with MBRC Legal. I commented that e ither there was a report(s) or there wasn’t. Somebody was misleading me.

But MBRC Legal didn’t see this as a problem and suggested that perhaps I should submit another RTI and they might be able to look at it. At that point I gave up and had to agree that perhaps the State Government ombudsman was correct.

Anthony Cass has been fishing for over 30 years, since he was a child and for as long as he can remember. The childhood memories of walking along the beach with his Dad will be his forever.

This is probably similar to other children who grew up in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and previous decades - before children were born attached to iPads. Before you start calling me a boomer, I say that tongue firmly in cheek and I sincerely hope that later generations do have such memories.

Anthony continued to fish throughout his life and about 10 years ago he changed the direction of his fishing. He started to focus on giant trevally (GT). Fishing for this type of fish is serious fishing because they put up a serious fight. They are aggressive and powerful, to the point that apparently even sharks are scared of them. They are described as bullies and thugs and a real test for those game enough to chase them.

For those readers out there concerned about animal welfare, the GT fishing community are respectful and tag and release the fish, ensuring the fish is healthy prior to releasing. You will note this in the video of Anthony catching this GT. A full size GT can be 50kg or more, but most commonly around 25-35kg. The big ones are around 70kg and that is what we are talking about today. 170cm long and around 70kg. Bigger than many humans!

For 10 years Anthony has been fishing for GT and actually spent the first 9 months catching nothing, thin air! And we aren’t talking about just throwing a line in the water. GT fishing requires a lot of effort.

Heavy rods, heavy reals and constant side to side movement of your arms.

We say fishing for GT because when you fish for GT you fish for GT, it isn’t something you can do half heartedly. The setup required is specific and I think it is fair to say that it takes a unique person to have this interest. It is rugged, physically demanding, lonely and frustrating. But all worth it when you get a big one and this is a story about the big one.

With only himself, a 15ft polycraft boat, a 60hp outboard motor, his fishing gear, safety equipment and his GoPro (so he could have a video just in case he caught a big one!) this is real man vs wild stuff. This is not like a big game fishing setup with poles, a 40ft boat, a fly bridge, twin diesels, a bbq and a crew. This to me is the crux of this story - we are talking about one man, a small boat and his gear (cue the Gilligan’s Island music).

Anthony set off to one of his favourite spots just off Cape Moreton. People had begun to notice his little green boat and with a reputation already of an expert fisherman, other fisherman would follow where he would go in the hope of them getting a big one.

This day he was having no luck and he was probably thinking he should have taken more notice of the weather report and stayed home. Today wasn’t going to be his day but being the type of person he is, Anthony gave it one more shot and moved to a less common location away from the riff-raff of other boats and divers.

Once settled in his location, all of a sudden, he had something big. So big he thought it was a shark. For nearly the next 10 minutes that is what he thought it was, a shark. But then he saw something, something that would change the rest of his life. It was a giant, giant, trevally. One of the ones around 70kg, the big one!

Physically exhausted and with not much left to give (no resting in GT fishing), now Anthony knew it was the GT he had been chasing for 10 years. His stomach was churning and his arms feeling like they were going to fall off. He knew he may not get another chance like this so he had to dig in. After 10 minutes that felt like an eternity the monster was next to the boat.

Both man and fish were exhausted with nothing left to give.

Now Anthony had to work out how to get this 170cm giant fish into his boat. He

While not formally recognised as a world record due to the requirement of official scales and so forth, Anthony has his video and the measurement of 170cm and is leaving the weight guesswork to the experts all over the world that are in awe of his big catch. The armchair experts have had their say as well!

When asked what was next now 2 weeks after he has caught the big one Anthony said that his love for the GT means that he will continue to chase another big one....but with that said he has his eye on another type of fishing, fly-fishing. We will have to keep an eye on Anthony to see where this leads him and what the new holy grail will be.

Anthony Cass fihting the 70 kg beast had failed before with other big fish but this was not the time to fail. This was his once in a lifetime fish. So he mustered up his energy and pulled it up and with some divine intervention from a wave coming at the right time he could manage to pull up a fish that nearly weighed what he weighed. Pulling it in took everything he had. He had to leverage every last bit of strength to the point of not worrying about self preservation. The mouth of the fish was literally centimetres from the area on Anthonys body that you don’t want a giant fish to be close to. But he didn’t care or didn’t know.

Now the fish was in and Anthony knew that he didn’t have time to muck around as the fish needed to go back in the water.

That is right, tag and release. So Anthony quickly measured it and it came in at a whopping 170cm. WOW. That was big but he was to exhausted to comprehend how big. Now his attention turned to getting the fish back into the water. Gently and slowly. 20 minutes passed until the fish was good to go. With a kick of it’s fin the once in a lifetime GT was off again to live another day, leaving Anthony behind in his boat to ponder what had just happened.

Panic crossed his mind as he checked the GoPro footage. Once your camera doesn’t work once you are forever worried about déjà vu but he could have a huge sigh of relieve. The camera worked and he had the video of the entire catch. This was important to share with the tight GT fishing community and to document what had just happened. So heading home back across the bay Anthony was left to think about what had just happened. He knew it was big, he knew he had the footage, but what did it really mean? How should you feel when you finally get the big one, the life changer?

Once he got home Anthony sent his video to good friend, GT expert, GT Buster. GT Buster put a video up on his YouTube channel for the GT community to see and that they did with 17,000 views in the first

Increased Centrelink, Medicare support for Bribie Islanders

Bribie Islanders will soon have faceto-face access to Federal Government Services like Medicare and Centrelink right on the island.

Services Australia is working to establish an Agent service on Bribie Island that will provide self-service facilities for customers along with trained staff who can provide additional assistance.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young, who fought hard behind the scenes to secure funding for the service, said he was delighted with the outcome.

“This will mean that residents in the area won’t have to travel to Caboolture to access government services such as Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support.

“Thanks to everyone who signed our online petition and helped make this happen.

“This is a great result and another example of how the Federal Government is delivering for the people of Bribie Island.”

An Expression of Interest process will identify a host organisation and it is expected the Agent will be available in the first half of the year.

Member for Longman Terry Young chats with Bribie residents Ray Adams, Rob and Andre Marsellos about the new Government Services Agent for Bribie Island.

Until then Services Australia Community Engagement Officers will continue to support the community, visiting the Bribie Island Neighbourhood Centre in Bellara every Tuesday between 9.30 am and 11 am for appointments.

Services Australia General Manager Hank Jongen said while Agents were

not agency staff, they received extensive training and ongoing support to assist locals with access to self-service facilities, certifying Proof of Identity documents and access to general information.

“Agents help people in regional, rural and remote communities to do their business with Services Australia and

connect with the services they need, no matter where they live,” Mr Jongen said.

“Increasingly, customers are conducting their business with us online.

“The new Bribie Island Agent service will help people use our digital services with confidence.

“People will be able to visit the Agent and use self-service equipment such as internet-enabled computers and telephone to access government services, scan, print and upload documents and receive advice on how to access the government assistance they need.”

Bribie Island residents will continue to have access to the Caboolture Service Centre at 20 22 George Street, Caboolture.

Fighting For Medicare and Centrelink services on Bribie Island Bribie Islanders have told me they want to have direct access to Medicare and Centrelink services on the island.

For the past six months I have been working with Minister Stuart Robert to get these important services via an agency on the Island, and will continue to do so.

Once secured, this will save residents travelling to Caboolture and ease demand on the Caboolture branch.

Bribie Pine Plantation Forest Recovering After Fires

By Staff Writer Mozza Bribie Island has 3087 hectares of pine plantation forest within the national park area, much of which was fire damaged in 2019. This area is regenerating over this wet summer of 2020/21 and looking green again, putting the area back on track to supply the states timber needs.

The area is managed by HQ Plantations who sustainably manage 320,000 hectares of forest throughout the state of Queensland in partnership with the Queensland Government. These plantations produce up to 2.3 million cubic metres of logs annually that support both domestic and export industries.

As well as supplying plantation logs, HQ Plantations protects native forests. The native forests provide a range of conservation, community and other values. HQ Plantations protects these plantations for future benefits.

HQ Plantations undertakes prescribed burning which removes accumulated forest litter (leaves and needles, grass, etc) from the forest floor during, primarily, the cooler months to reduce fuel for wildfires that may occur during the fire

danger period. This is usually in the spring and early summer months, when higher temperatures can combine with periods of lower rainfall and humidity.

more accessible. Bribie Island supports highly flammable vegetation types that abut densely populated residential and commercial areas.

Prescribed burns are low intensity or cooler fires where flames are kept under strict control (usually less than one metre). These are often undertaken after rain and in conditions where smoke will be blown away from population centres and major roads.

For example, in 1994 a fire jumped the Pumicestone Passage from the mainland and burnt most of the island. Also, in 2002 much of the natural vegetation on the southern end of the island was subject to a high intensity wildfire. These fires have resulted in too-frequent burning of some vegetation communities, particularly on the southern end of the island. Repeated frequent burning may result in a reduction of flora and fauna species diversity.

Unseasonal dry and hot conditions led to the 2019 fires which decimated the forest and wildlife, which are only now returning to normal. Kangaroos and wallabies are in good numbers along Bribie Island’s inland track now and native plants are also back strong after recent rains.

Over the years, Bribie Island has been subject to repeated unplanned fires. Before the late 1980s, unplanned fires were not a major issue on Bribie Island. Since the early 1990s, unplanned fires have burnt significant areas of the island at least every three to four years. This is particularly a problem on the southern populated end of the island, where natural areas are

There is some evidence that some of these fires were deliberately lit or resulted from unsupervised camp fires as recently seen on Fraser Island. It is imperative that Bribie Island users be careful lighting fires for any reason and be aware of prevailing weather conditions if the lighting of a fire is absolutely necessary. The diversity of plant and animal life on the island we all know and love depends on it.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said Cairns Hospital, Townsville Hospital, Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Princess Alexandra Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Gold Coast University Hospital will act as Queensland’s six ‘hubs’ for the Pfizer vaccine. Unfortunately Caboolture hospital has missed out.

“Using these facilities as a base for this rollout means we can manage the logistics of the Pfizer vaccine, which is actually quite complex,” she said.

“It has strict limitations on its storage, transport and distribution which makes it unsuitable for how we would normally rollout a widespread vaccination campaign.

“We have chosen our state’s largest hospitals, from the top and tail of our state.

“Queensland will begin this process as soon as we receive the first Pfizer vaccines from the Federal Government.

“Every day is a step forward in our recovery from this pandemic, but this is a particularly exciting milestone for us all.”

Priority Group 1a would be the first to receive a vaccination.

“When it’s appropriate for you to get a vaccine, I urge you all to do so,” Dr Young said.

“Queensland has fared so well during this pandemic because of the public’s responsiveness. I thank you all.

“We are ensuring we first protect the people who need it most. These are the people who are most at risk of exposure and severe disease.”

Queensland Health is working closely with the Australian Government on the vaccine’s roll out.

Valentine’s Day

The 14th of February is a day filled with red. Red roses, red hearts and red sweets.

All these symbolic items procured in the name of love and of course Valentine’s Day. Saint Valentine’s Day is internationally recognised as the day of hearts.

Across the world people spend their day making romantic proclamations and emptying flower shops. Whilst the origins of the day vary, the tradition links strongly to Ancient Rome. Many stories surround why the day became so symbolic including the belief that the patron Saint Valentine was a priest who continued to perform marriages for soldiers despite the then Emperor outlawing it. Others imply that the Saint helped Christians escape harsh Roman prisons. Regardless of the origins, the day quickly became firmly implanted within many countries and cultures. In keeping with the Roman ways, roses are another nod to ancient Roman tradition and culture. The rose was the symbol of the goddess of love, Venus in Rome and Aphrodite in Greece, and thus has aptly become perhaps the largest part of Valentine’s day. Despite the universal flower, many countries have a variety of traditions. Take Argentina for example, who do not celebrate Valentine’s Day in February but ‘Week of Sweetness’ in July. The week originated as apart of an advertising campaign, but quickly gained popularity and thus has continued. France is also another country believed to have been apart in one of the many possible origins for the day, with the belief that the first ever Valentine’s day occurred in the Parisian land. Of course, it is no surprise that Paris, the city of love, fully embraces the day embodying love, lights and life. Here in Australia, chocolates and flowers tend to remain the gift of

Breaking down barriers into the workforce for young people in Longman

Member for Longman Terry Young said an Individual Placement and Support Program will now be run at the Caboolture headspace thanks to the additional government investment.

The Morrison Government is investing in innovative strategies to address the barriers preventing people with mental illness in Caboolture from finding and keeping a job.

“This is fantastic news for the local community because we know career assistance hand-in-hand with clinical support can make a profound difference in the lives of young people and ensure they can reach their full potential.”

Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston said the Government has committed an additional $45.7 million to extend two programs dedicated to helping young people with mental illness join the workforce.

The funding will be used to double the number of headspace sites running the evidence-based Individual Placement and Support Program to 50 and to support headspace National to continue the Digital Work and Study Service.

“A job is a game-changer and that is why the government is so focussed on helping people to get into work,” Minister Ruston said.

“This program has never been more important given we have seen young people disproportionately affected

by COVID-19 in terms of jobs losses which we know can compound the mental health impact so many are feeling as a result of the pandemic.”

No crime in Beachmere The camera at the Beachmere Boat Ramp, installed to deter crime and record incidents, has been removed and relocated to another site with a Council Spokesperson saying it was “not required”.

The camera was deemed “not required” at the Beachmere Boat Ramp due to the very low or nil rate of offences reported in the area.

The cameras have been placed around Moreton Bay region and are rotated to “hotspots” or areas with a high crime or incident rate.

Although incidents are often posted and discussed on social media, it is necessary to report the problem to the Police to ensure adequate and requisite statistics are obtained.

The length of time it takes to report an incident through Policelink, and on the Police website, can deter some people from making a complaint.

However, relocatable cameras and even, police patrols, are often determined by the number of incidents in a particular area or suburb. Locals are urged to lodge a report of any incident.

Residents Narrowly Avoid Christmas Sinkhole In Beachmere

Professor Patrick McGorry, executive director of Orygen which runs the program with headspace, welcomed the Government’s commitment to making a real lasting difference in the lives of people who face barriers to work.

“The onset of mental illness often occurs in young people which, by the age of 25, can significantly affect their ability to transition from study to work,” Professor McGorry said.

The expansion of the Individual Placement and Support Program will allow more than 6000 youth under the age of 25 experiencing mental illness across Australia to receive specialist vocational and employment support in tandem with clinical treatment to find and keep a job over the next four years.

Over four weeks later, by mid January, the Council had not returned to the street and the sinkhole had still not been repaired.

Local Beachmere resident Jo Van Styn nearly missed Christmas when she narrowly avoided falling into a sink hole outside her home on Christmas Eve. Returning from pre Christmas drinks she was fortunate to not fall into a large sinkhole about one metre long and 600mm wide and at least 700mm deep .

After contacting MBRC the Council’s emergency on call worker attended, borrowing “witches hats” from neighbours to make the area safe. The worker then returned later in the evening with barricades.

“We were walking back from Christmas drinks and this sink hole appeared less than two hours after we had just walked there,” Jo said.

Over four weeks later, by mid January, the Council had not returned to the street and the sinkhole had still not been repaired.

On contacting the Council they advised they had no record of the work or the problem.

A visit to the site of the sinkhole in late January show the Council has visited the ever increasing hole and the road has been repaired.

Council keeping ahead of COVID curve Smart and strategic spending is helping to keep Moreton Bay ahead of the worst impacts of the coronavirus downturn, with strong fiscal figures highlighted in Council’s Quarter 2 Operational Plan.

Mayor Peter Flannery said with Budget planning getting underway, Council would be focussed on keeping the economy afloat.

“Despite being in the middle of the biggest global economic downturn since the Global Financial Crisis, Council’s strong financial position is continuing to keep Moreton Bay moving,” Mayor Flannery said.

“Our $249 million capital works program has kept us on track and I hope to ramp-up our investment in local infrastructure to ensure Moreton Bay bounces back strongly this year.

“We’re not leaving anything to chance; while our growing population has historically been the secret to our success, today’s launch of our new Regional Economic Development Strategy articulates explicit strategies to diversify and modernise our economy so that we attract new investment and new opportunities.

“In the first half of this finance year, we met and exceeded targets on customer response times, project delivery and program activities.

“This shows residents can be confident that we will continue to service our community, deliver projects, create local jobs and also balance the books of Council.

“We are focused on demonstrating

strong leadership and good governance to build trust with the people of Moreton Bay, which is important as the region grows rapidly and more people choose to call our Moreton Bay home.”

Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements.

Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are stretching and balance exercises similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other? Is one knee more stable/ stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if walking and/or turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Ironing out your birthday suit...

By Cathy McGillivray They say clothes maketh the man or woman, and they certainly can.

We have all seen the difference a good suit or well fitting dress makes to someone who we usually see in thongs and baggy clothes, but even great clothes can’t always hide a saggy, baggy, bumpy, lumpy body.

Okay, with enough elastic and wires for support, boobs can go from hanging spaniel ears to being perky enough to rest your chin on. Tummies can be concealed and thighs can be squeezed into sausage skin underwear that makes going to the toilet a session of resistance exercises and deep knee bends that are usually only done when Olympic athletes warm up.

You squeeze your body into clothes so you can look good and feel confident at a big event, but when you get home you fight, wriggle and peel your way out of uncomfortable, breath reducing layers and are left with your birthday suit showing imprints from being imprisoned in these shapewear straightjackets.

You breathe a sigh of relief as your body and skin relaxes and you thank the chocolate and wine gods that the mirror you checked your outfit in before leaving home is in the other room now that you are naked.

Looking good naked isn’t about being sexy for someone else, although it can definitely make a

difference to how you feel about yourself in a relationship and the energy you have to share. Yes we all age, yes gravity drags things lower in both men and women and hair sprouts in places that hair shouldn’t!

It’s not fun when your eyesight diminishes just enough for you to not see the weird new hair that grows until after you’ve been out socialising! After peeling the clothing off you get ready for bed.

Suddenly the bathroom light glints and glistens off a long bright white strand that’s hanging straight out of your chin! Arghhhh!

Now just because you are not the hairless nubile nymph you once were, it’s not an excuse to stop keeping your foundations strong, safe and supple. You need those foundations even if your birthday suit covering them is getting tattered, worn out and droopy.

Before changing my lifestyle I would slink around covered in as much fabric as I possibly could.

Lights were turned off, mirrors were avoided like the plague and I owned a complete set of “shapewear” which made going out in summer feel like I was wrapped in gladwrap and rubber inner tubes. If I ever tried dancing in all of this, it was only until something – usually my sanity – snapped.

Then I discovered how amazing it feels when you have a well fitting birthday suit. For a start you have a far wider choice of outfits and most

Use a stable chair or the kitchen bench SLOWLY Squat slightly, lowering your hips, making sure your knees don’t extend beyond your toes. Count “one and two” on the way lowering yourself Hold for a count “one and two” And SLOWLY stand back up. Wait for a count of 20 before repeating. Focus on trying to keep your heels down the whole time, if you can.

Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok! Only go as low as is comfortable for you and both heels remain on the ground. Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15 Rest

If you really want to keep your precious birthday suit fitting you beautifully then you must ensure that your bones, which are the hangers that it rests on, are strong and the padding it is draped over is the right shape, and of course you must nourish your suit with food that will keep your fabric looking as good as the day it was made.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young with Moreton Bay Cr Tony Latter (Div 12) at Bigmor Drv, Elimbah.

Elimbah residents will find it easier to get out and about thanks to construction of a new much-needed footpath along Bigmor Drive.

The new 3.5km concrete footpath will be constructed between Pumicestone Rd and Mansfield Rd, providing the “missing link” in the local footpath network in the area.

The $700,000 project was jointly funded by the Federal Government under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program ($500,000) and Moreton Bay Regional Council ($200,000).

Member for Longman Terry Young said he was delighted to see work begin on the new footpath.

“Mums and dads with prams and people with mobility issues will find it much easier to get to local shops and parks thanks to this new footpath,” Mr Young said.

“It will also provide safe pedestrian access to the massive new commercial development next to the iconic Big Fish Tavern, anchored by a new Bunnings Warehouse.

“I’m pleased that the Federal Government has been able to contribute $500,000 to this project which will benefit local residents and support local jobs during construction.”

Construction of the new footpath was expected to be completed in early April, weather permitting.

“I’m looking forward to seeing its completion along with the other projects in Longman that have been funded under the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP),” Mr Young said.

“The Federal Government’s assistance for Bigmor Drv has allowed us to fasttrack construction and keep locals on the tools when it’s needed most.

“This is a demonstration of what can be achieved for a community when levels of government come together, and I thank Terry for his partnership on this.”

Councillor Tony Latter (Div 12) said these footpath works would have a massive impact on the quality of life for Elimbah residents.

“If COVID-19 taught us anything it was the value of getting outside, exercising and getting some fresh air,” Cr Latter said.

“This footpath will connect the Elimbah community across a huge stretch of road, whether it’s for recreation or just grabbing some groceries it’ll all be much easier once complete.

“Not only is this project a great economic stimulator, but it’s an upgrade on quality of life as our region grows.”

Other Longman projects funded under the LRCIP include new lights at Bob Brock Park in Dakabin, a new fauna overpass at Woorim, and work is already under way to upgrade Collins Park (Summerfield Drv) in Caboolture.

Harvest trail services collaboration trial to help Australian farms

Member for Longman Terry Young at a local strawberry farm As part of this trial, Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Limited (GrowCom) will encourage and support school leavers in LONGMAN to participate in a ‘horticulture gap-year’, including production of a ‘Your Career in Agriculture’ video for school leavers.

Under GrowCom’s project, school leavers will participate in pre-induction training for work in the rural sector and will be supported to gain employment in Queensland harvest areas.

Australians are encouraged to take up seasonal work opportunities in horticulture as part of a collaboration trial funded by the Morrison Government.

The Harvest Trail Services, which have been expanded into 16 regions, will ensure major horticulture areas have access to the workers they need.

Five organisations are being funded

as part of the $1 million Harvest Trail Services Industry Collaboration Trial to find new ways to encourage people to take up opportunities in the horticulture sector, while meeting employer demand.

Minister for Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash, said the trial will test-run different ways to promote harvest work to Australian job seekers.

“We know growers are struggling to find the labour they need, which is why Harvest Trail Services is as important as ever,” Minister Cash said.

“As part of Harvest Trail Services, we have provided additional funds to a number of growers groups for them to develop innovative approaches to promote new opportunities in the horticulture sector.”

The organisations selected are: • Fruit Growers Victoria Limited

• Northern Territory Farmers Association Incorporated • Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers Limited (GrowCom) • Bundaberg Fruit and Vegetable Growers Cooperative Limited • AUSVEG Limited.

Queensland communities get $16 million boost

More than 690 Queensland community groups will benefit from $16 million in funding from the latest round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF) grants.

Today, Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman announced the successful recipients from Round 106 of the GCBF. “The grants are fantastic in supporting a variety of local community driven projects - from a women’s refuge providing much-needed accommodation for families experiencing domestic and family violence, to a humidicrib for a local wildlife rescue,” Ms Fentiman said.

The grants are used to assist not-forprofit community groups provide services, host events and upgrade equipment and facilities that benefit their local community.

“All of our successful recipients do fantastic work in our local communities,” Ms Fentiman said.

By Staff Writer Mozza Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a one hour drive from Bribie Island via Steve Irwin Drive past Landsborough, up the range towards Maleny. The Reserve comprises 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains landscape. A remnant of the rainforests that once covered the Blackall Range, the reserve is a living museum of diverse plant and animal life which will delight with its tranquility and beauty.

The reserve is home to rainforests species of flora and fauna and there are spectacular displays of sights and sounds of the various birds and animals to learn about the forest. From the 1870s the area was a valuable part of the timber industry producing mainly red cedar. Following timber the area became a dairy producing region.

In 1941 Mabel, Mary and Elizabeth Thynne set aside this reserve out of deep respect for the rainforest and named the area after their mother, Mary Cairncross. The sisters transferred the property to the local council and from its establishment an army of volunteers has cared for the reserve.

Waves Break Over Bribie Spit

By Staff Writer Mozza Summer storms have recently seen waves break over Bribie Island’s northern most point adjacent to Golden Beach Caloundra.

Having heard the news and being an avid boatie albeit with limited experience, I set out to check it out.

Four wheel driving was not a great option as the beach access is banned about 5 kms south of the area I wanted to see.

As it turns out a 5km walk there and back would have been a better option in hindsight.

Back to the boat, I set out from the Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) boat ramp on an incoming tide of 1.9 meters which I thought would provide plenty of water for my journey up the Pumicestone Passage to Caloundra.

I set out late morning and motored past Pacific Harbour, Whitepatch, Gallaghers Point and the boaties only campsite at Mission Point enjoying the beauty of the island and Glasshouse Mountains. After that things got serious and the green and red beacons I needed to stay between became closer and closer together to the point I had to squeak through in places.

After a few wrong turns I made it through eventually to the point on the inland track where the remains of an old lighthouse sit and the passage widens and deepens again and I was able to get back to cruising speed. I found the spot right at the tip of Bribie Island where the waves had crossed and anchored for a swim and lunch as it had taken me and hour and a half to navigate my way.

The waters are blue here and I swam to shore and climbed about a meter to the dune to see the surf side of Bribie only about three meters away. It was strange to stand where the island was so thin as to

Mary Cairncross Entrance mond Birdwing Butterfly and fresh water crayfish which can be seen from boardwalks that protect the species. There are several walks such as the Rainforest Loop of 1.7kms and shorter options such as the Pademelon and Piccabeen loops of 1.3kms.

On your walk you will see Watkins Figs towering 50 meters above you, Pademelons at your feet and Eastern Yellow Robins, Yellow Throated Scrubwrens and honeyeaters around you. The forest floor is covered with a rich supply of fallen fruit such as figs and the blue quandong as well as invertebrates and moss and leaves be able to see the calm side and surf side with a turn of the head. After a short surf I looked at where the waves had come over during that wild storm and realised that while it’s only a matter of time before Bribie has a north and south island it probably won’t be in the next few years.

This should give home owners enough time at Golden Beach to lobby their council for a break wall before the waves reach their door.

Satisfied that I had dispelled recent reports of Bribie being cut in two by nature I headed home in time for the top of the tide expecting a dream run now I knew my way through the passage. Trouble hit early on when what a straight forward passage between beacons on the way looked different and provided confusing options on the way home.

After getting stuck once and changing course, the passage became a maze of sand and mud banks and islands. After taking a few wrong turns the boat decided it had had enough and told me the engine had overheated from all the low speed manoeuvrings. Dropping anchor I waited half an hour for things to cool and enjoyed my surroundings and the cricket on the radio.

Following this my boat continued to say it was too hot to go on and the tide was starting to run out leaving me with visions of spending the evening on a sand bank waiting the next tide in six hours. A call to the VMR was made and my membership never more needed. After a while the men in Bribie 3 arrived and towed me back to base with their back of the hand knowledge of the passage channels and markers.

So after a trip to the outboard mechanic having replaced thermostats and water pumps I can advise you the reader that if you are thinking of going up the inside of Bribie Passage to stop at Mission Point and come back or better still head the other way to Moreton Island. There is much more water in that direction.

Community Demand Safer Roads Newly formed community group, Beachmere Residents for Safer Roads, held a community meeting on Monday, 25 January to address ongoing resident concerns of hooning and speeding.

State Member for Pumicestone, Ali King and Councillor for Division 2, Mark Booth, attended the meeting and heard the concerns of the residents who attended.

Those local concerns centred around speeding, hooning and the need for pedestrian crossings. Councillor Mark Booth advised that the Council was investigating traffic calming, and traffic management measures, in the

village as well as trialling chicanes and pinch points in at least one location.

Ali King addressed the concerns relating to Beachmere Road with a description of the Community Consultation process due to commence in March or April. Disappointingly, and at a cost of $800,000 the community planning phase will be an on line process with little or no personal interaction for the residents of Beachmere.

Beachmere Road has been allocated $7m but, as Ali said, that will not fix Beachmere Road or even a quarter of it, but will allow a “pipeline process” where, as funds become available,

they will be allocated to the next stage or required works.

Ali King then advised the meeting that the “old style” Police Beats were a “thing of the past” and were considered ineffective and not proven to contribute to community safety.

Instead, the Labor Government was going ahead with Mobile Police Beats and the Bribie Island / Beachmere area had been allocated one such unit in the upcoming rollout.

Mobile Police Beats are, Ali said, the “cutting edge” and allow a Police van to be stationed at an event, or criminal event, as a mobile response unit to

allow the Police to be “seen”.

With funding only being allocated in the next Budget, it is anticipated that neither Bribie nor Beachmere will see such a Mobile Police Beat before the end of 2023.

From roads to crime to juvenile crime to disenfranchised youth, the Safer Roads Group, and the residents who did make the effort to attend, should be applauded. It is now up to the elected officials to translate their “political speak” of saying what everyone wants to hear, to making the changes that everyone wants to see, and that are required to keep residents safe and happy in their own streets.

Beachmere enjoys its Australia day picnic in the park

Australia Day means so many different things to so many people.

Cranky Lizard has created a list of the days set aside for all Australians to contemplate our circumstances and our great gift of living in this magnificent land – Australia. These days are National Holidays and are different from the religious holi days of Easter and Christmas. There are several other State-inspired holidays, but apart from the religious aspects, the two listed below are the ones that count.

Australia Day 26 January EachYear Anzac Day 25 April Each Year Because of the noise created by the self-serving media, and make no mistake, this issue is created by a self-serving media; about the date of Australia Day and how it affects Australian Aboriginal people. Cranky Lizard had a quick look at the days set aside for the Aboriginal People, in Australia, each year.

And that meant that Cranky Lizard had to create another list.

Here is the list:13 February National Apology Day. 19 March Close the Gap Day. 21 March Harmony Day. 27 May Reconciliation Week.

03 June Mabo Day. 01 July [for a week] NAIDOC.

[a day that takes a

week to celebrate] 04 August National Aboriginal

Children’s Day. 09 August International Day of

World’s Indigenous People.

05 September Indigenous Liberty Day. Cranky Lizard makes no comment about these days except to say that these days are holidays for Aboriginal People.

Most of the time, the whingeing, salaciously encouraged by the electronic media, is based upon the arrival of Captain Cook; they look quite foolish really because Captain Cook did not colonize the place. He found the East Coast. The Dutch had long discovered the North and the West. The intellectual rigour that is applied to the early days of Australian discovery and history is best summarized in the existence of the rather artistic aboriginal musical/film, written to note the occasion – “Looky, Looky, here comes Cooky. “ Cranky Lizard is anxiously awaiting the referendum on the establishment of a separate Voice for Aboriginal people.

Cranky Lizard wishes to bust a myth being peddled about the place – the idea of One Nation or First Nation People.

This term derives from 20 th century American politics, and it has been hijacked to Australia in some vain attempt to cloak reality…no such entity ever existed!

History determines the truth, which is that Aboriginal People were widely spread across Australia in the form of distinct tribal or cultural groups. Each of these lived their own lives, had their own languages, their own cultures and their own boundaries. They were much like large extended families. These tribal/ family groups never ever acted as a sovereign nation – they never did!

Aboriginal people did not cede sovereignty; before the English settlers’ arrival,

AUSTRALIA DAY…Oh Dear?

aboriginal people had no sovereignty to surrender.

“Sovereignty “is a term from international law developed in the 18 th century, and it has no relevance to Australia’s reality at the time of English settlement.

None. So “BANG “– there goes that myth!

But. On to far more important matters!

DO WE STILL NEED OUR STATES? Prior to 1901, the current Australian States were separate colonies of the British Empire. For various reasons, all of them sensible, the colonies decided to join together in a federation. A series of meetings were held, constitutional conventions, and a new constitution was created.

A Constitution for a new Nation.

The Australian Nation was established on 01 January 1901. It was called the Commonwealth of Australia.

And the new Nation was to be governed by the new Constitution – The Constitution of Australia; a document which has a special status in that it cannot be changed in the way that other laws can be changed.

It is a supreme law – it overrides all other Australian laws.

Cranky Lizard leaves the extensive detail of all this for you to research but points out that the Constitution sets out the relationship between the former colonies, now States and the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Parliament can make specific laws, which are exclusive to that Parliament. Those laws include : international and inter-state trade, foreign affairs, defence, immigration, taxation, banking insurance and a number of other matters of lesser strategic and economic importance.

The Commonwealth has certain exclusive powers in some matters, foreign affairs, defence, taxation and no State can legislate in these areas. On other issues the Commonwealth and States have concurrent powers where each may legislate and the State retain legislative powers over matters not explicitly listed in the Constitution.

Cranky Lizard knows, and most of you will know, that common usage breeds contempt.

The duplicated cost to the taxpayer is enormous, absolutely enormous.

Cranky Lizard could list any number of inconsistencies and duplication of legislation and Government Departments – that is not hard, and these matters have been discussed quite broadly, by a number of academics and parliamentarians over many years.

The arguments blunder on; vested interests prevail, and the Nation struggles on under an increasing economic burden of duplication.

None of this was meant to happen when these matters were first drafted by the Constitutional Conventions of early days.

But is has happened, and, until now, most Australians have shrugged their shoulders and accepted the fact that the Nation is over-governed to hell and saddled with an economic burden of duplicated Government functions.

What happened next was that the Rider of the Pale Horse came amongst us, spread his vile pandemic seeds and tipped the whole model of Government, States and Commonwealth, on its head!

Just like that!

State Premiers invoked Public Health Acts, clung to advice from senior public health servants and quoted them as legal Gods when locking up States, economies, businesses, personal lives and previously accepted freedom of travel.

Cranky Lizards points out that in a matter of weeks the Nation returned to a disparate collection of colonies, vying with

It was ever thus in matters of the Constitution. Legislative blurring has occurred in a number of areas, in particular, States have legislative powers on education and health, and yet we have Commonwealth Health Departments and Commonwealth Education Departments. Why?

each other for political advantage over whose Premier was protecting their State populations more effectively than others.

Sadly, but inevitably, partisan politics popped in to add absolutely nothing of substance to the debate – no surprises there!

Australia flopped about like a grounded catfish – borders closed, borders opened, travellers in, travellers out, big sports bringing money and virtue signalling nonsense by kneeling everywhere, could arrive, individuals without substance were discarded like old rags.

Elections were held on the basis of “vote for me because I saved you “, and it worked.

Australia survived all this not because of the strength of its institutions but because of the power of its people.

Australians accepted the nonsense, the incompetence, the outright lying, in some cases, and the parochial dysentery of myopic State Premiers.

There will be more pandemics, that is inevitable. Why? Simple. When you have Nations conducting state-sponsored experiments of interchange of biology between, animals, birds, reptile and humans, some of the infected vile matter is bound to escape.

When the next pandemic arrives will we have to do all this again? Or will we have a better system to deal with these matters on a national basis? Or will we have to put up with the next round of parochial posturing from various State Premiers.?

Cranky Lizard reckons that it is time that we opened discussions about the contemporary Federal model of government in Australia – it is not working well, for many reasons.

Those reasons are complex and the basis of a rational discussion for another day.

Cranky Lizard assumes that it is possible to have a rational discussion about any significant changes to life, government or community living these days?

Think about the future of Australia.

A short love story, with all the magnificence and sadness that love brings…to us all !

This story is fiction. No bunyips or children, or anyone else, was harmed in writing these words or the subsequent production thereof…It is a short love story, with all the magnificence and sadness that love brings…to us all ! And no one or place has any real reference in these wonderful few words.

As she cleaned the bar in the pub, you may remember, the one on the corner, just bordering the swamp that swamped around from the Warrego River, just west of the Town, Olive, the olive-skinned bar girl with the thick short hair thought to herself – ‘ we haven’t seen old mate blue boots for a while‘.

And she was right. It was late January.

It was hot and dry. The Warrego was down a bit, not much, but down.

And he had not been in town for a while…

Cattle were thirsty. The locals were pissed off with almost everything, which was rare because, generally speaking, it was a town of Western Queensland which accepted the weather, the isolation and the strange vicissitudes of life as a part of the deal.

But there was an underlying tension which could not be dismissed easily.

It was not a big deal – Olive, who, by the way, was bloody beautiful, figured that it was a moment of the times and that a decent week of rain would sort it all out.

As she wiped down the last of the bar tables by the window of the front bar that looked over the swamp, she saw two things which made the short hairs on the back of her neck stand up!

A pair of querulous pink eyes were looking straight at her, from the swamp and she saw ‘blue boots’ leaning loosely against the ghost gum which stood by the swamp.

And he was murmuring some soft words to the pink eyes !

Olive knew, from past experience in this special little place, that the pink eyes belonged to a bunyip who had blue, crinkly, soft skin and who was in love with the local vet who had fixed his buggered hamstring in a moment of

wild nonsense on the Eastern bank of the Warrego River many months ago.

The vet, was a cool hearted woman, with piercing green eyes and wild, wonderful hair, who worked as a country vet of large animals in the region; she knew that fixing bunyips with buggered hamstrings was not going to get her much credible professional recognition – but she did it because she was Irish, and, if you are Irish you have no choice to deal with these things.

Blue boots had travelled around quite a bit since he had last been in this beautiful little town; the place was in his heart, and he always wanted to come back there, and this night, in late January, he did.

He was a man of this land; he knew its rhythms, its songs, its secret messages

that flew on the soft winds over the river. He knew how the wind gave leaves the gift of flight. He knew how the fragrance of river mud was soft and sensual; if you knew how to live with it.

And, he had a mate.

A bunyip with blue skin and big soft pink eyes…

He knew that’ bunyip’ had fallen in love with the wild-haired vet and he and the Bunyip had spoken about this, in the soft, lisping whispers of the bush that only those who know how to speak to bunyips can understand.

As they lay back in the mud on the riverbank, Bunyip and blue boots figured out that it was ‘ better for all of us if you let the vet go.’

Bunyip, deep in his large heart, knew,

that a bunyip and a vet, even one with beautiful wild hair and green Irish eyes, could not really make a love affair work.

He humped his shoulders and accepted his fate.

His mate, Blue Boots, grabbed his shoulder and whispered that many, rather luscious blue and green bunyips, upstream were waiting for him to rock up!

In all this, supporting his mate, Pink Eyed Bunyip, Blue Boots had kept Olive in his thoughts and dreams…as he travelled across this vast, wonderful land doing cattle business.

Olive was a fire deep in his soul which he could not put out.

The way she moved behind the bar when she was working on a busy night; the swing of her hips, the flash of her eyes and the quiet, calm and knowing smile which flickered across her lips when she looked at him caused his toes, inside his blue boots to curl up !!

And. On this night as she was cleaning the last of the tables, she saw him looking at the pink eyes, leaning loosely against the ghost gum, he turned saw her, a lazy smile crept over his lips.

In time, Blue Boots and Olive made their music and sang their love songs… the intensity of their lives together was a bit like someone carrying fire around on their hips. Their love for each other was bloody magnificent – and he told her that !

It was amazing. They were two humans who found a wonderful recipe for binding their lives together.

They were lucky.

Their mate, Bunyip, with the large soft pink eyes, wandered North, upstream a bit – he was a cool bunyip with some life experience.

His soft pink eyes were not as innocent as before the busted hamstring, but there was a knowing glow about them…

Which was…love comes, love goes, while you live, if you have it, hang on to it with both hands, because it will give you a wild ride.

And, love beats the hell out of anything else when it comes to living.

25 Years of Neighbourly Australia Day Tradition

As patriotic neighbourhoods go Bongaree is right up there with the best of them with the residents of Allamanda Drive and Azalea Drive racking up 25 consecutive years of Australia Day breakfast celebrations in Marquadt Park.

Starting on Australia Day 1996, neighbours Paul from Azalea and Les from Allamanda hatched the plan to hold the celebrations and have been the guiding force behind the tradition ever since. Invitations are dropped by the pair in letterboxes in both streets and Les brings the BBQ and its BYO from there on with around 30 locals bringing chairs, tables, coffee, bacon, egg, sausages and other beverages.

The street has had a fair deal of turnover though the years but the core of Paul, Shirley, Les, Pat, Ron, Dot, Milly & Gilly have been every year.

The first year the group sat around a small tree and chatted over the top of the foliage. These days the whole group sits in the shade of that same tree chatting away with new friends and old.

Australia Day may be a source of conflict in some communities but in Bongaree it’s the glue that holds the neighbourhood and its people together. Long may the local tradition continue.

Bounce Back!

Happy New Year all, it is great to be back in the patch in 2021. Last year went out with a bang literally with a lot of local properties still waiting for insurance repairs from the devastating hail storms that hammered through Caboolture, Ningi, and parts of Bribie Island before Christmas and not to mention of course the carnage done to plants, trees, and our landscape specimens also, including mine!

My large Bromeliads - Alcantarea imperialis - ‘Silver Plums’ look like a piece of swiss cheese, no matter which angle you view the poor buggers from, my Citrus trees were stripped, veggie plants became chop suey and my Cordylines looked like somebody stuck a tuft of grass on top of a broom stick and my pride - shattered too, but we were one of the lucky buggers that had only minor structural damage to our pergola roofing sheets in comparison to some Ningi residents who lost trees, windows smashed from hail and suffered significant internal flooding and vehicle damage also. So here is hoping 2021 is a super year for all of us and here is wishing you all the best of health and a quick recovery for all those affected by our recent storms.

It is amazing how plants bounce back though, just days after walking around my smashed plants in my own patch, frangipanis (Plumeria sp.), bougainvillea’s, fruit trees and veggies, I decided to finally tackle the pruning of a large zucchini plant which already had a long trailing trunk of 900mm in length from where the seed originally germinated. I left two new small undamaged leaves that were no more than a teaspoon in size.

It looked pretty silly at the time and I was seriously considering pulling the whole plant out, but within 4 weeks it bounced back with twice as many leaves, 3 times the amount of fruits and finally growing equal male and female flowers, growing another 350mm since in length and as a result is now jumping out of the raised garden bed producing fruits quicker than we can eat! My frangipanni I just planted 4 weeks prior to the hail storms which only had one flowering stem at the time had also shot out 5 new flower stems from the end of the remaining semi dormant branches, and now the colour spectacle and fragrance is admirable and the new leaves- glossy and strong also. My Crepe myrtles have all shown resilience too, and their flowers are literally a bee magnet, so impressive in fact, that I took two short videos of the magnificent blooms with bees buzzing madly and posted them on my business social media page and it’s hard to believe that most of our plants that had endured mother nature’s wrath have since bounced back with a turbo like energy while providing a feast

LANDSCAPE PLANT OF THE MONTH Lagerstroemia indica ‘Enduring Summer Red’

Lagerstroemia indica ‘Enduring Summer Red’, is one of my favourites and I am so glad I added it to my collection, especially considering the magnificent blooming buds that still burst into life after severe defoliation from our hail storms last December. Lagerstroemia ‘Enduring Summer Red’ is a dwarf hybrid crepe myrtle bred in Australia by Touch of Class® plants.

‘Enduring Summer Red’ grows to a maximum height of 1.5 metres tall and wide. It flowers early in November in Australia and will continue to flower throughout summer. What a truly eye-popping spectacular show of vibrant colour it provides when it bursts out of its dormancy.

‘Enduring Summer Red’ leaves are 3-4 cm long, elliptic to obovate, glossy, and green in summer, turning burgundy to red with orange tones in autumn before dropping. Older plants reveal the traditional trademark crepe myrtle flaking-off bark traits which are tinged with red undertones before going back into winter dormancy. No fuss, all show, and no trouble, best way to describe the Lagerstroemia indica- ‘Enduring Summer Red’. for the birds and pollinators alike which seem to be all making up for lost time after the storms carnage.

As mentioned last month, I also have a short video posted on the above link of what they look like when they hatch, and they drop themselves with silk threads to the ground ready to munch on your juicy grass blades.

Also new flushes of Citrus are still being hammered with leaf miners.

Best to start spraying a horticultural oil as soon as you see the new flushes appear to deter the diabolical moth before it lays its eggs at night. You may have to rotate your treatments with Pest oil - (Petroleum based white oil) I found these are best applied in the late afternoon. Little green grass hoppers are congregating en masse and eating the crisp juicy leaves of anything else that survived the hail

storms and these critters are hard to control, I tried hosing them off and shaking the smaller dwarf citrus trees and they do seem to jump off, you could catch them, trap, or dispose of them but I could not come at ripping their heads off; like my mother-in-law recommends as the best organic control method. Yikes!

The Neem Tree (Azadirachta indica) The Pharmacy Tree! To Neem or not to Neem!

I was asked recently by a client why I refer to eco-neem®- for control of pests in ornamentals, but not edibles, but recommend other neem-based products for edibles. This is a very good question, and I will describe the differences of the two main types. (1) Extracted insecticidal and (2) Neem oil natural tonics for plant health. eco-neem® Is an excellent product for use: In ornamental plants only!

Firstly let us take the product eco-neem®, produced by Organic Crop Protectants now owned by the Dulux group. eco-neem® is a registered organic insecticide with the BFA (Biological Farmers Association) for controlling chewing and sucking insect pests. contains (Azadirachtin A & B) which is the active insecticidal compounds extracted by a patented process from the seed kernels from the neem tree.

The insecticide works by suppression of appetite as first symptom, but the compounds also affect the growth and reproduction abilities of the target insects too and as a result this product works well when applied to your lawn with a hose on applicator to control lawn grubs (Armyworm) at the manufacturers recommended rate. eco-neem® is not registered to use on anything we consume, meaning it is not approved by the APVMA (Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority) for edible food crops in Australia presently. Current registration in Australia for eco-neem® is for use on ornamentals and the citrus leaf miner control as recommended according to its label, is for ornamental citrus only. Further investigations are being done and it is hoped that the APVMA will allow its use for edible plants in the near future. Some neem products are already registered in New Zealand, the USA and parts of Europe for use on edibles with no withholding period. eco-neem® is also branded as: AZAMAX. Neem Plant Spray:Manufactured by Batphone industries is also BFA registered.

This is a Neem Oil based product called: Neem Plant Spray, which is produced from cold pressed neem seed and as a result contains the natural polysaccharides, proteins and trace elements which are primarily used as plant tonics for all plants including edibles such as fruit and veggie crops. It clearly states on the label that it is a foliar enhancer or soil conditioner to enhance plant growth and vitality and can be mixed with other fertilisers. The directions on the label state: “Do not use if you are pregnant or about to become pregnant”.

If or when the Neem trees extracted insecticidal compounds are approved

by APVMA for use on edible plants for pest control in Australia, it will be a game changer for organic food producers Australia wide! But do your research folks and time will tell!

February Fishing Report Spicy Barbecued Predictably quiet, the trick Chilli Prawns has been to know where to go!

MARCH 2 hours 14 minutes. This is an great spicy barbecued prawns recipe with Tabasco, chilli and garlic. Makes a perfect summer dish.

Ingredients

While there may be less excitement than usual in the fishing world, there have been great sightings of dolphins, dugongs, turtles and sea-birds.

We have certainly enjoyed some beautiful summer weather, so far this year. Lots of calm, sunny days; the sun has been warm and the water is too. Wasn’t it convenient, that the one weekend we all had to stay home because of the COVID19 lockdown, it also happened to be our only weekend of bad weather – so we couldn’t go fishing anyway!

Almost all our winds in January have come from the north-east, which might bring the blue-bottles into the Ocean Beach but, unfortunately, not much else of interest.

The fishing, over this lovely spell of good weather, has been predictably quiet. The trick has been to know where to go and when. Looking for good, deep holes and some fresh, in-coming tidal flow has been the trick. Strong incoming tidal flows have been making all the difference this month. The outgoing tides have been all nibbles and a few catches, mostly under-sized. Up at Whitepatch, in some of the deeper sections, there have been some big snap-offs and it's one of the few spots where flathead have been consistent. There have been some trevally and snapper landed at the north end of Whitepatch over the past couple of weeks - mostly too small but occasionally keepable catches. Be aware – a small snapper looks a little like a bream. If your bream is pinkish with blue spots, it is a SNAPPER and must be AT LEAST 35cm long, to keep.

On the incoming drift from Pacific Harbour has seen a lot of fun for families, with plenty of juvenile fish hanging about the structures. Marisa and crew found it was the only place working for them. Michael, Dee and family had a good day there, catching tarwhine, bream, sweetlip and moses perch, but the only ones they saw were under-sized. They did manage to hook a good squid!

The rising tide has also been a good time to try fishing at the mouth of Ningi Creek, and flathead have been regular catches, although not huge. Brodie’s flathead was caught on prawns; Phil also used prawns to bring in a nice haul of fish, including flathead, flounder, tuskfish and

sweetlip from a morning’s drift south of Ningi Creek. Jenny got a 45cm sand flathead drifting in Ned’s gutter, using soft-plastics. Mullet strips are also doing well with the flathead – Scott used it to catch a beauty, over the turn of the tide, near Turner’s Camp.

If you’re out late enough in the day, the Avon wreck and Ned’s gutter might be the go - there have been good bream catches there. One of Alan’s was 36cm but there have been a few bigger than that.

Under the bridge has been a useful spot to pull up for casting a line; the shade offered by the bridge is good for the fish and fisher alike. Of course, the best time under the bridge has been at the turn of the tide; over the past few days, coming up off low-tide has seen a few hungry bream - and good sizes among them. Amitha’s 30cm tuskfish was just big enough, and she caught a few sand-whiting the same, using squid. Scott (who had already caught that flathead at Turner’s Camp..) caught a big flounder and a very decent snapper, again using mullet for bait.

Jack has said that the only fish worth targeting at the moment are mackerel , and the bridge is often worth a try. A few days ago, with the early morning low-tides, was a great chance to go for mackerel, with some good catches being the reward for getting up before sunrise.

Serves: 6 1/3 cup (80ml) olive oil 1/4 cup (60ml) sesame oil 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons Tabasco sauce 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon tomato sauce 1 tablespoon chilli paste 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1kg large prawns, peeled and deveined 12 wooden skewers, soaked in water

Directions Preparation:10min › Cook:4min › Extra time:2hours marinating › Ready in:2hours14min Whisk together the olive oil, sesame oil, parsley, Tabasco sauce, minced garlic, tomato sauce, chilli paste, salt, pepper and lemon juice in a mixing bowl. Set aside about 1/3 of this marinade to use while barbecuing.

Place the prawns in a large, resealable plastic bag or a bowl. Pour in the remaining marinade and seal the bag/cover the bowl. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Preheat the BBQ for high heat. Thread prawns onto skewers, piercing once near the tail and once near the head. Discard marinade.

Lightly oil the barbie. Cook prawns for 2 minutes per side until opaque, basting frequently with reserved marinade.

A good bit of splashing and a few birds overhead will show you the way, then cast with a lure in amongst them, just near the edge of the action.

Fish-shaped lures are the go and, usually, the shinier, the better!

ELIZABETH (LIZ) HEBER 1934 - 2021 Elizabeth Heber (nee Inglis) was born with a severe cleft palate, and not expected to survive. No doubt, the idea of her living until 2021 and having such a successful life would have been unthinkable.

Elizabeth, known as Liz to all her friends, was a talented child and could have studied music, piano and violin, or art at college. Instead she chose science completing her Bachelor of Science and working in medical research (tuberculosis) before teaching at various schools including St Hilda’s Southport and Clayfield College.

Retiring from teaching in 1996, Liz took up an art career, focusing on silk art, with exhibitions of her work around the world, and using her art to raise funds for Zonta International.

Liz was determined, inspirational, fun and talented.

She lived and worked in Beachmere, Queensland and passed away at her home on 14 January 2021.

A Retrospective of the life of Elizabeth Heber will be held at the Beachmere Hub, Main St, Beachmere on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 March between 10am and 4pm.
