Re: Issue 58 ‘The Angels of Mercy’ by Harvey Fewings

‘What I find most disturbing about Mr Fewings article is his justification for killing every boy alongside the road with a mobile phone. Is he insane???? It’s the same rhetoric given to us in the Vietnam conflict that boys as young as six will throw grenades into your vehicle as you drove by. Not one incident of such was reported by anyone during the twelve months we were there. It could be total bullshit for all we know. Anyway if the boy did have an IED it would be set off by a push of a button and not a mobile phone. The mobile phone would probably be in the possession of a Taliban who would set it off remotely in the event that the boy has changed his mind. Anyway could Mr Fewings provide any data, evidence or Incident Reports on Mobile Phone Boy IEDs? There’s no doubt that war is hell. It does something to one’s mind and soul when a brother-in-arms is blown to pieces or killed by gunfire, or of the atrocities (war crimes) committed by the enemy. We should therefore try very hard not to head down the same path as the enemy otherwise, we are no better than them. From personal experience it is my belief that a very small number (rogue element) of the military has psychopathic and sociopathic tendencies. I totally agree that the alleged actions of a few do not and will not diminish the reputation, pride and integrity of our good servicemen and women of this great nation. As for the Canberra sociologist appointed Inspector General to investigate the allegations, I suppose it’s for transparency reasons. Probably the same reasons journalists can sometimes investigate police corruption better than the Police

Integrity Unit. Till then it is up to the Australian Court of Law to determine their innocence or guilt, and for our Government to think seriously the next time they commit our troops to somebody else’s backyard’. Tony Gee

Harvey Fewings Response. “ Firstly, Thank You Mr Gee. for your interest in the Local NewsPaper. Secondly, in answer to your question, am I insane? Well, there are a number of my veteran mates who would agree with you. Having due regard to your comments, I make the point that we should always read what is actually written not what you think is written or what you want to see written. I made no assertion that all young boys holding mobile phones by the side of the roads in Afghansistan should be killed. Read it again, Mr Gee, read it again! There is much evidence, available from unclassified sources about the detonation of IED’s [ Improvised Explosive Devices- e.g. bombs.] by the use of mobile phones. I am certainly not going to debate, in this forum, the operational details of these matters. I also made no comment, anywhere in my article, about six year old boys doing anything at all in Vietnam ! But, I raise the question, if you were in that place for your twelve month tour, what would you know about the tens of thousands of combat experiences had by US Marines, US Army, the Army of the Republic of the Phillipines, the Army of the Kingdom of Thailand or the Army of the Republic of South Korea? Did you receive a briefing on all their combat experiences over all the years that they were committed to that sad place. I notice that you are quick to use theterm ‘ total bullshit ‘…you are probably an expert at that, and I shall leave all that with you. I respect all veterans of military combat and their right to express their views. Once again, I thank you for your interest in the Local Newspaper. Regards, Harvey Fewings.” Further to my rant in the December edition of the LOCAL about why election promises will not be honored please allow me to add a little more to my case. The State Budget presented after the election identified 7 satellite hospitals to be constructed around Brisbane with one on Brib-

ie Island and $265 million has been allocated to begin delivery. But only $1.6 million will be spent within this financial year. Over 7 hospitals..?? That might pay for the first round of drinks. It sounds like one of those Premier Anna pledges that tend to evaporate. Secondly if you read the daily paper you would have read on 18 Dec Treasurer Dick stated “recovering from COVID-19 will be a four year marathon and there will be setbacks”. That means the $100 Billion dollar debt accumulated over the previous 2 terms is the fault of COVID-19, not the Government, don’t expect the Government to build anything and setbacks mean more debt. COVID-19 will replace the ghost of Cam Newman, which will be ageing somewhat in four years time. It is also a “get out of jail card” for the Government. As for the LNP it really is not working and they need a divorce so each party can concentrate on their strengths and come back as a coalition. What can you do ? Write to your State member asking for updates and to your Federal member for good measure. Paul Mc Ellister Bongaree Dear Editor I thought I had said everything that needed to be said about our recent election, but find I have no option but to reply to the load of cobblers that Ady Isnard has written in response to my letter. After reading her comments about how the LNP treated people with ability issues I was gob smacked, and like her, I too had witnessed the frail aged and disabled having to wait for over an hour on the first day of pre-poll (due to a computer malfunction and people thinking the voting would be starting at 8 a.m and not 9 a.m.) But unlike our Ady I didn’t walk away from the situation and go home, I did something about it I sought out the Supervisor and told him that it was distressing to see the frail and disabled having to wait in the long queues and asked if they couldn’t be taken to the front of the queue, he responded with the comment, ‘certainly they may’ and I said I thought that some might feel anxious about ‘queue jumping’ and he told me to tell them it had been authorised by him and was perfectly O.K. Also he added, that for anyone unable to physically get out of their vehicles, that someone would come out and take the voting slip to them. On this advice

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Rewind to 2007 and local communities were up in arms. With very little notice the decision was made by the Queensland State Government that local councils were to amalgamate. The reasoning behind the decision? Economies of scale, to benefit smaller councils, cost savings, to gain other efficiencies and possibly to make things easier to control for the State Government.

Amalgamation: 13 years later. By Staff Writer Matt Owen

Locally this meant Caboolture Shire would merge with Redcliffe and Pine Rivers to make a super council to be known as Moreton Bay Regional Council. Just up the highway The Sunshine Coast would also become a super-council merging the councils of Caloundra, Maroochydore and Noosa. After 5 years Noosa had had enough of being part of the Sunshine Coast, they had a highly publicised referendum on the issue and de-amalgamated. While well publicised locally at the time, Noosa was not the only Council that went down this path, they were joined by The Shire of Douglas (Cairns Region), The Shire of Mareeba (Tablelands Region) and The Shire of Livingstone (Rockhampton Region).

Rob Noble (the then CEO of Caboolture Council) & Joy Leishman (the then Mayor of Caboolture Council)

It doesn’t make great reading when you put it all together. It actually makes you wonder if we are better off without the Moreton Bay Regional Council or even local council at all. As a community are, we better off going in a different direction? What are the options?

a) Nothing. The easy option. We have a new Mayor in Peter Flannery that has a better understanding of the Caboolture Shire. Time to be patient and see what happens. Sit back and wait until the next election. b) De-amalgamate. Just like Noosa and the other shires. Back to Caboolture Shire Council. Back to how it was pre-2008. A lot of money, time and effort required for this one. Who is going to back it? c) De-amalgamate and amalgamate with Sunshine Coast Council or possibly split the old Caboolture Shire with divisions 1 and 12 going to the Sunshine Coast. d) De-amalgamate Bribie Island only and amalgamate with other Islands such as Moreton, Stradbroke and Russell. Give this some thought before you say no. e) Get rid of the bridge and Bribie to go it alone. Do it our way – kind of like Norfolk Island. Too late for that and not enough rate payers to make it work I’m told. f) Do we really need 3 levels of Government that includes opposition at a State and Federal level? Could we live without Local or State Government? How much money would this save, and would it make a difference to our lives? I think we could hear more about this in the future.

This is how I feel. After 12 years our catchment has very little to show from the relationship with Moreton Bay Regional Council. There is limited infrastructure in key areas, limited local events published other than online, no tourism strategy that I have seen, limited small business assistance, no new local road networks, poor public transport, and the list goes on. Development and infrastructure have not kept up with growth. For instance, what tourist attractions do we have that have been provided by Council? I can think of the newly renovated Library and the Museum at Bongaree. What has been done for the youth of the area? What has been done to the roads? What is the strategic plan? Is there a plan? Plenty of Questions…..

Now fast forward to 2021. Nearly 12 months ago we have a newly elected Mayor in Peter Flannery and it is probably fair to say that considering everything that is going on around the world that our region has a positive outlook. However, it is also fair to say that the first 12 years of Moreton Bay Regional Council has had its fair share of controversy. Investigations, suspensions, questionable approvals, unusual contract processes and conflicts of interest.

This is what I came up with as possible options, but everyone has an opinion right?

Issue 59 2021 - We're here for you!

MBRC Caboolture administration centre It is at this point I sat down with the last Mayor of Caboolture, Joy Leishman to get some perspective and to dig a little deeper. Joy served as the Mayor between 2000 and 2008. Here are the key points of what Joy had to say. To listen to the full interview, visit www.islandandsurrounds.com/podcast-listen or listen on your favourite podcast platform. • • •

•

• • • •

At the time of Amalgamation Caboolture Shire Council was in a strong financial position. The three councils had to organise the amalgamation between themselves, including the name. At the last day of Caboolture Shire Council there were 983 staff and there was confusion about their future role and location. At the time of amalgamation Caboolture Shire Council was the 7th largest council in Queensland with a population of around 160,000. Joy was previously a Local Councillor between 1985 and 1991. Our current Councillor, Brooke Savige is the best Local Councillor she has ever seen. The Noosa de-amalgamation was funded by wealthy backers. Joy took a positive outlook into the 2008 election and was

•

•

• •

favourite to win with the merged Council, but the eventual winner was the Redcliffe Mayor, Allan Sutherland. At the time of amalgamation, they should have also reviewed the legislation around Local Government. There should have been more community consultation around the boundaries and the new role of Local Council. If it was up to Joy, she said “she would have split the three councils into two.” Amalgamation should have been more about assisting smaller councils by merging with larger councils, as opposed to building super councils.

So the chat with the former Mayor, Joy Leishman was enlightening and gave plenty of perspective on the amalgamation. Thank you Joy. So how has the new ‘super’ council performed between 2008 and 2020? Sure, like most large organisation they will be able to quote facts and figures about what a great job they do: thinks like population growth, revenue, employment and so forth, but how do you feel about the local community and the role of council?

We have the beach; we have the privately owned Sandstone Point Hotel and the volunteer operated Butterfly House. A Tourist Information Centre in a car park, I thank the LOCALS, our volunteers who keep it going. It certainly needs a face lift and more signage though. Consider tourism to the local area as a multi-million-dollar business, we need a much better structure urgently so we can build our economy. Now is the time, No excuses on this one! How different things would have been if we stayed as Caboolture Shire or amalgamated with Sunshine Coast? Is it too late to change our mind? Is it too hard to change? What must happen? Firstly, the community must want to change. With 13 years water under the bridge (literally) maybe 50% of the community has no connection to the Caboolture Shire Council and only know life with Moreton Bay Regional Council. So unlikely. It probably had to happen at the same time as Noosa and the other Councils in 2013. Secondly, it needs funding for research, promotion and lobbying. Noosa is a unique location with a unique population and a strong environmental history, not to mention plenty of dollars in the community. So another unlikely here. Finally, the Queensland State Government are the decision makers. Another unlikely scenario in these COVID times that State Government would prioritise a de-amalgamation or want to unscramble the eggs as Joy Leishman puts it. So that is that. Too late to turn back time. No fairy tale ending. We just need to make it work. Fingers crossed.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

I immediately went and made sure that EVERYONE handing out leaflets etc. knew about this and therefore ensured, that to the best of our ability, this was the outcome. I’m sure that the people I personally escorted to the front of the queue would agree that this did happen, and obviously no one impeded them or blocked their way, the very fact that you made such comments about our volunteers doing this shows you have no credibility whatsoever. As for Ady’s assertion that the ALP were polite, respectful etc., words almost fail me, talk about a parallel universe, I must have dreamt that what I saw of ALP volunteers thrusting their A3 leaflets on people with the words, ‘you have to vote for Anna she’s saved you’ (funnily enough Ali’s name wasn’t mentioned very often!) and as for my ‘tone’ ( think I was quite restrained under the circumstances) when speaking to Ali King and her being so brilliant and not walking away but listening to me, what does she think candidates are there to do? The ALP had a huge white sheet quite illegally, (and it took a week to have it taken down,) stating ASK US ABOUT OUR NEW HOSPITAL, I did ask about it, I wondered where it was going to be built, Ali replied that firstly that would have to go out to public consultation, when I queried this, as I thought it unnecessary as a hospital was needed desperately in Bribie and they should just get on with it, she

Community news replied that there were seven sights where it could be built.... but declined to say where they were. Well Ali King I heard so much from you and your mob about how people in Bribie would no longer have to travel to Caboolture for Chemo, dialysis etc. and how it was going to be built within two years, I would respectfully request that you give Anna a nudge and get on with it, as there has never been any time when I have travelled to Caboolture and haven’t witnessed ambulances either going with sirens blaring to and from Bribie ... this facility is desperately needed the clock is ticking tick tock. I would like to mention for Ady’s benefit that Stephen the Supervisor of Prepoll, came and personally thanked both my husband and myself at the end of the Pre-poll for our exemplary behaviour , he said I know there have been ‘issues’ but I wanted to personally thank you both for your professional conduct. May I also take this time to congratulate our Council for somewhat belatedly ‘doing up’ the Orchid and Butterfly House areas, ‘These works were done through the ‘Covid Initiative’ funded by the Federal Government.’ it looks fantastic and thankfully now a much safer pedestrian access. Queensland Second Last for Infrastructure Spending The 2020 Australian Infrastructure Budget Monitor ranked only Western Australia worse than the Sunshine State in terms of infrastructure spending as a proportion of total government spending due to a “constrained balance sheet”. The report found that the Palaszczuk Government increased infrastructure spending by 10 per cent in reaction to the coronavirus recession, while other states jacked up spending on roads and rail by up to 45 per cent. NSW and Victoria were planning to spend $84bn and $70bn on infrastructure over the next four years, compared with just $35bn in Queensland. The report did not include spending made by government-owned corporations. To see the full report visit https://infrastructure.org.au/2020-21-australian-infrastructure-budget-monitor/

Parkrun itself is a not-for-profit global organization operating in 22 countries. There are currently 405 of these FREE weekly events across Australia with more starting up almost weekly. Its popularity is brought about by its simple concept: it’s free, just turn up (every) Saturday morning with your barcode and walk, jog or run 5k. It doesn’t matter how fast or slow you go. It doesn’t matter your age (or young you feel you are). It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part and meeting people. Those who can’t run or walk or just don’t want to be in an event for whatever reason can still be part of it by being a volunteer in one of the numerous roles. We have witnessed a blind person running with a guide and a stroke victim recently out of hospital taking part in an event. With 780,000 participants currently registered in Australia alone, parkrun has become, without

question the largest, most significant and game-changing community event in the country. All events are organised and delivered weekly by volunteers and in Australia this is a group of over 3,500 wonderful, dedicated, local ordinary people. Parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing. We want as many people as possible to feel part of a real local community brought together by these events, as well as being part of our global parkrun family. Australia Day: The Origin Australia Day Australia Day Australia Day Australia Day Amelia Strazdins In Australia the 26th of January is dedicated to celebrating our country. And whilst many people spend it on the beach or barbequing with friends, the origins of the day are often forgotten and the darkened history that follows alongside it. For the traditional owners of the land, the Indigenous peoples, the day marks the beginning of the destruction of their land, culture and language. Many refer to it as invasion day. The actions that occurred on this day have prompted the campaign ‘change the date’. Under this campaign, people have been advocating for the celebration of our country to be moved from the 26th of January. As a unified nation heading into the year of 2021 it is more important than ever to recognise our country’s past, the mistakes that have occurred within it, and what we can actively do to promote a more unified and inclusive future. We are often referred to as being the ‘lucky

country’, and this has proven more than true throughout the coronavirus pandemic. But for those still feeling the effects of being oppressed and their culture and families destroyed, Australia Day being held on the 26th doesn’t create feelings of luck nor appreciation but reminds Indigenous peoples of severely outdated mindsets and inexcusable actions against their culture and their peoples. It is important to note that pushing to move this celebration to another date does not mean we cannot celebrate our wonderful country: our sporting teams, beautiful beaches and mateship. It simply means that this celebration should occur on another date which does not hold such a terrible past for the traditional owners of our land. For many Australia Day is not spent thinking about how our country was founded or barbarically settled, but for Indigenous peoples Invasion Day remains as a permanent reminder. As a nation it is naive and ignorant to

What better way to celebrate Australia Day than a Picnic in a Park? It’s even better when the park is Clayton Park a short walk from anywhere in Beachmere. Add entertainment, lots of shady trees, a BBQ, ice cream and coffee and you have the very best close to home – no jam packed roads or searching for a carpark. Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) organised the Picnic in the Park last year as an event to raise funds for two and four legged bush fire victims. It was warmly welcomed and supported ensuring the Picnic was held again this year, with any funds raised supporting local wildlife charities. BANG has a huge program of events already planned for the new year with the Australia Day, Picnic in the Park just the first in it’s “Celebration of Community” 2021 program. Join the fun in the park with activities and games, entertainment and more from 11am till 3pm in Clayton Park, Beachmere. Email info@bang.org.au or www. bang.org.au for more information.

Happy Birthday Tom! 100 years young, Born 26/12/1920…. Married Name - Cloreen Sylvia Robinson, has lived on Bribie Island since 2007. Tom’s family and friends celebrated her birthday on Bribie Island. Lyn Ball Tom’s Daughter said “From my point of view it is the only 100th birthday I have attended (or am likely to attend, because I am pretty sure I won’t make that age lol) it just goes to show how tough they bred them in that era. Mum has worked hard all her life at home on the farm as she grew up, then as an adult in tobacco fields and kilns, hop fields, on raspberry farms and fruit picking, she has also done commercial cleaning, worked in factories and much more, My mum has raised 5 Children and now has 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.” Tom or Tommy has lived through the aftermath of the Spanish Flu, (which she remembers) the Depression, World War 2, and other conflicts, saw the introduction of the motor car, air and train travel, telephones, inside running water and toilets, electricity, radio, Television, mobile phones, computers and much more in her 100 years. Tom is the survivor of her husband Sydney Robinson who passed away in 1998. Lyn also says “her mum’s moral and work ethics is something I think today’s generation could draw a lot from”

ignore the history surrounding the British settlement of Australia. This year we have the hope that we will heal and grow, but this healing also refers to acknowledging Australia’s true foundations and endeavouring to support the Indigenous culture and history through positive actions. 2020 was the year of change- the Black Lives Matter movement being one of the most significant aspects. This movement pushed the world to recognise the racial inequality that still occurs and highlighted the oppression of Indigenous and Native culture globally. In changing the date of Australia Day, we pay respect to the traditional owners of the land and recognise the challenges and hardships endured by Indigenous people, not just on the 26th of January but throughout history. It is too easy for this problem to be ignored or swept under the rug but pushing for social change is incredibly important. This change can occur, but action must be taken by raising awareness and discussing the issue. Open letters to the government and petitions also play significant roles in promoting the issue. So, this year on the 26th of January please take the time to consider that the date does not hold positive implications for Australia, or the traditional owners of the land, only negative. Momentous and positive change is already occurring, with endeavours of reconciliation. A line in our national anthem recently was changed from ‘we are young and free’ to ‘we are one and free’. In making these changes, including changing the date, we open up a brighter, more unified future.

Issue 59 2021 - We're here for you!

And – By whose standards shall we judge them?

By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings.

Note: This article, in a slightly different form, was first written by me and published in September 2018. I think it is worth another look. It has been slightly amended. We know, because we have read about it, watched the lurid details on television news and discussed it, in this, the Local Paper, that there is an enquiry into the battlefield behaviour of Australian troops on the field of combat in Afghanistan. It is a matter of national importance as it strikes at the heart of who we are and how we all imagine ourselves to be as Australians. We also know that the troops in the frame are the soldiers of the Australian Special Air Service. We also know that the enquiry has been conducted by the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force and that a Report of the findings of his investigation has been delivered to the Commonwealth Government and the Chief of the Australian Defence Force. We do not know what is in the Report because it is a confidential document – although, we are told, by senior Government Ministers that the details are shocking. Well, we should not be surprised at that, because most things that happen on a battlefield are shocking, bloody shocking! We know that the investigation, carried out by the Inspector General of the Australian Defence Force, had its genesis in the secret Report from a Canberra sociologist who conducted covert enquires into the actions of returned soldiers from Afghanistan to discover the “ culture “ of these men. Now, that is a bloody good start. An enquiry based upon the secret testimony of a Canberra sociologist. No military background, no association with the Australian Defence Force and a PhD from Australian National University into the treatment of women with breast cancer. Nothing I say here is critical of the Doctor. No ridicule is directed towards her qualifications – I am merely stating the fact that this was the person who wrote a secret report into the activities of troops on the battlefield in Afghanistan, based upon her discussions with returned soldiers, who were, apparently unaware of the purpose of her enquiries. I reckon, right from the start this matter was a ‘ bit’ messy.

I attended a public meeting at hotel in South Queensland, where the respected author and journalist, Chris Masters, conducted a discussion, amongst serving and retired members of the Australian Defence Force, about matters he had covered in his book- “ No Front Line “ – a book about Australian troops in Afghanistan. It is, as you would expect, a well-written book and well-researched. It raises matters about attitudes and actions on the battlefield in Afghanistan. I have formed my own opinion about these matters; it is for you, the readers, to develop your own opinions. I question, why not release the Report of the Canberra sociologist? The ADF says that these matters may create controversial public comment. Well, may be. So what ? There is plenty of controversial public comment about now – and the ADF has no answer to the criticism made about their conduct of diversity training classes, PC classes, pink fingernails, unbalanced recruitment targets – so a little more public comment? So what? But, in all these comments and investigations and reports, what standards are we using to judge these men? I know what happens on a battlefield. Military combat is a brutal business, and there are no trays of oranges at half time. I would not want a civilian sociologist conducting an enquiry into what I did and thought whilst in Vietnam, and I would not want anyone rifling through the actions of my soldiers. We were in Vietnam to kill communist soldiers, and, that is what we did. The only regret I have from that sad place is that, at that time and at the place I was not able to destroy more communist soldiers. Is that grounds for a secret enquiry? I bloody well think not! So. We move on. The secret Report has now resulted in an investigation which has appointed another Investigating Officer and may well take ten years, note that, ten bloody years, to be completed. Do we judge these men by the standards of the society in which they fought? We know what standards apply in Afghanistan society, so we can’t judge them by their standards. Do we use the Internation War Crimes Commission? A body which has its house in the Netherlands and spends

much of its time condemning Israel and the United States for actions those nations take against international terrorists. The possibility of using IWCC standards in making a judgement against our combat soldiers indeed exists. However, there is serious doubt about this bodie’s capacity to deliver a fair and reasonable assessment of what happened in Afghanistan some time ago. Do we then judge them by the standards of our own society? Their alleged activities occurred in a war zone in another country, with most of the current evidence apparently hearsay. That would be an interesting legal adventure. In my years in the military, it was impressed upon me, indeed driven into my soul mercilessly, by Instructors at various levels. There is an iron rule in the Australian military, a law that stands unchallenged – “ there are no bad Soldiers, just poor Officers.” And, in my experience, it is so. We can explore that in the context of this opinion piece. The troops under investigation had a different command structure than all the other Australian soldiers in Afghanistan – at least that is what is reported. This structure may have been imposed upon them by political requirements, by a desire to keep some of the SAS activities ring-fenced from other Australian Army sections, who knows? What I do know, and military experience tells me so, is that once you begin to make ‘ special command arrangements’ for individual elements of a deployed military force, the integrity of the command structure is affected. So, did we make our own problem? Yes. I believe we did. And, I believe that we must be very, very careful how we attend to this matter; for Australian soldiers are decent men and women, they do not torture, they do not commit murder, they do not act as battlefield thugs. They are, as they should be, tough and hard minded. To paraphrase the words of the US Marines – Australian soldiers are ‘ no better friends and no worse an enemy. By what standards would you judge them? I know how I would judge them.

Beachmere businesses battered The driver of a motor vehicle, reportedly stolen from Bribie Island, crashed into two local shops over the Christmas break. The driver of the vehicle had caused damage to other vehicles and signage on his route from Bribie Island and along Peel Road also causing a number of vehicles to take evasive action. Onlookers said the driver was driving dangerously and erratically in the carpark before losing control and smashing through one shop window. Reversing from the wreckage he proceeded to drive through the next shop window where his vehicle remained. Attempting to flee the damage, local witnesses held the driver until Police arrived. The Beachmere Butchery, whose new shopfront and signage was only installed twelve months ago, and Top 2 Toe Massage Therapy suffered major damage to their premises. The force of the initial impact was so great it pushed an entire fridge unit to the back of the shop. Loss of employment and business income will further hurt the business and those employed there, while locals will miss the products and services offered by these dedicated local and long term businesses. The owners involved are awaiting advice from their insurers before work can begin on repairing the damage and re-opening their businesses.

HEARTBEATS Classes Are BACK

STARTING MONDAY 18TH JANUARY

MONDAY CLASS - 10.30am, THURSDAY CLASS – 2pm Churches of Christ Club House Please arrive 10min before class. Fit Beyond 50 – Knowledge And Experience Personalised Fitness For Any Body At Any Age

www.fitbeyond50.net.au

Before You Start! You Should Be Exercising At A Level Where You Can Say Five Words Before Needed To Take A Breath. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started! The exercises below are gentle cardio exercises which we do in Heartbeats classes. You Should Be Exercising At A Level Where You Can Say Five Words Before Needed To Take A Breath. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Issue 59 2021 - We're here for you!

MEANWHILE IN THE REAL WORLD By Cathy McGillivray

Taking a deep breath I think “Dare I even type this?” Because of print deadlines, I’m writing this back in 2020, and the thought of typing Happy New Year gives me butterflies. I do hope you had a lovely Christmas, and yes I do hope we all have a fabulous new year but it’s still 2020 as I sit here so it feels like I’m pushing my luck saying happy new year 2021!! Of course this also means that by the time you read this you could be munching on a Hot Cross Bun that are already on sale, sigh! Don’t worry the marketing folks don’t care that you’re probably already struggling to fit into any pre-Christmas clothes. Having a break over Christmas gave me time between riding, going to the beach, and reading a ridiculous amount of books, to surf the web. Surfing allowed me to discover lots of “health and fitness” apps out there in webland. Of course now there’s a boom in on-line fitness apps. The botoxed wrinkle free faces, rippling abs, tight tooshes and even tighter lycra shorts wearing trainers (that’s just the boys!) promise intoxicating results while the glare from their whitened teeth makes the small print safety exclusions almost impossible to read. Then there are the apps promising weight loss, the majority based

overseas, sometimes making the information totally out of whack with the fact that it’s summer here. Offering recipes in ounces and pounds, using foods we can’t buy, encouraging us to “snuggle down with a steaming bowl of soup” which sounds delightful when it’s 93% humidity and 35o. These apps will expect you to log in every time you take a bite or think about taking a bite, or see a bite, or a drink. But of course they also tell you that you’ll be able to live your normal life because logging your every move, bite and thought is normal isn’t it? While these apps can be helpful they also rely on you to be stock standard average with absolutely no physical issues. After all, if you have injuries or health issues how is an online trainer, without any injuries or health issues, who has pre-recorded the session you are watching 3 months ago, going to make the changes to the workout needed so you can perform the exercises safely. All they know about you is that your payment is going into their bank account. But hang on what about all their incredible before and after transformation photos? They say they have clients who have lost 25lbs! Wow that sounds impressive except that is just 12.5kgs, yep, our clients have also lost that and more. 30lbs!! Wow

Senior Gentle Chair Cardio Exercises Chair Cycling

Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Hold out your “handlebars” and keep them still while cycling Sit up straight and hold your tummy muscles tight Lift both feet off the floor and “cycle” for the count of 20 each foot, or as many as you comfortably can. If you find having both feet up uncomfortable then march instead of cycling. Rest and then perform one of the rowing or paddling exercises.

Chair Rowing Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle out in front with your arms almost completely straight Bring the noodle back in and tuck under your chin “Row” in and our 20 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then go back and repeat the cycling exercise.

Chair Kayaking Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle like a kayak paddle with both hands in the centre “Paddle” on each side 15 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then repeat the cycling exercise.

Chair Left or Right Canoeing Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle on one side like a canoe paddle with one hand in the middle and one on top “Paddle” on one side 20 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then repeat the cycling exercise. Come back and “Canoe” on the other side after you finish cycling

– 15kgs, yep our clients have done that too or like Sheron, who stayed with us after finishing her 12 week challenge and has now lost 20kgs, that’s 44lbs! The difference is that our before and after photos are of real Bribie people, not a photo bought through a photoshop app. Yes, you can use an app to help you as long as you realise that the generalised questions you fill in are just that – generalised, which should make you realise that the information they give you will be generally okay for the average person. I have yet to see an app that asks about medications and existing injuries. I have yet to see an app that measures you correctly – they rely on you doing that, even though I’m sure most people don’t know how to measure correctly in the correct places. I wonder how many of you started this year using an app to help with your fitness, and how many are already over the constant updating? Are you still actually using it at all? Or have you discovered that you can lie to an app, ignore an app, uninstall an app and eventually go back to blaming yourself for “failing”. The apps don’t care if you don’t achieve your goals, and they don’t care if you blame yourself. Every year we run a 12 week challenge and will do so again this year. Last year we ran it and even with the closures and restrictions our clients achieved awesome results. We do this every year to help kick start lifestyles that will help our clients live longer, happier and healthier. When the challenges

finishes most of our clients continue training with us because they know we do care and exercising and eating well is achievable and enjoyable. We adjust exercises to allow for issues like blood pressure, previous injuries, arthritis etc. We’re like those great doctors who prescribe “fitness” as the way to reduce many medical issues and as protection against so many health issues except we don’t make you sit in a waiting room for 50mins. If you still want to see before and after photos to be convinced then check out our website www.fitbeyond50.net .au and the Before and After page. These are real results from our real clients, eating real food and increasing their exercise in a controlled and monitored way for only 12 weeks, many more achieve great results without doing the challenges. If you want to make a lifestyle change call me on 0408803037 and book a chat to discover how talking to a real person who has been there and done that herself, will help you go there and do that! But wait! In other real world news the Heartbeats classes are restarting on the 18th of January!! There are new times and days shown in the advert. I can’t wait to see everyone again and although the classes will be changed a bit you will still have to put up with me!

Can COVID Leave a Positive Legacy? By Staff Writer Mozza Much about society has changed during the COVID 19 pandemic and most of us are a bit over it to say the least. Businesses have been impacted the most with new rules around hygiene and contact tracing. People’s habits have changed too in relation to use of hand sanitiser and proximity to others in public spaces. So when the vaccine is rolled out from March 2021 say till June or July when contagious diseases normally flourish will there be a lasting benefit once herd immunity is achieved? To take influenza as the example in 2019 there were 66,135 cases reported in Queensland and 298,320 cases reported in Australia and 812 deaths recorded from it in Australia that year. In 2020 there were 6,034 cases reported in Queensland and 21,266 cases reported in Australia and 37 deaths recorded in Australia last year. So this is roughly a 90% reduction in illness and more than 95% reduction in deaths in one year! So given the government has set the spending benchmark of around $5M per life saved during COVID, how much is an influenza death prevention worth? It’s going to be hard for them to back away from this level of commitment going forward, so what things will they try to have us keep post pandemic to continue this good work? Obviously we can’t shut society down for every disease that comes along but

the public’s expectations have been raised on the health front. Going back to 800 deaths a year from influenza may no longer be accepted as just a fact of life we are used to and are fine with. At $5M per life the new cost of preventing the spread of the flu in Australia per annum is $4 Billion per year. Not sure where that money would come from, but even if they spent a quarter of that each year we may prevent 200 deaths a year. This is all fuzzy logic and unsustainable given the amount of other killer diseases that also make demands on the public purse, but perhaps the free or inexpensive things we are doing to stop disease could be kept. For example, the crosses on the floor to show customers where to stand apart in queues could easily stay and caps per square metre in restaurants and bars could also be kept if they were financially viable. Hand sanitiser dispensers and signs could be kept, as well as signs requesting people not to enter premises if unwell. Telephone doctor appointments must surely be kept as well as work from home facilities for the unwell. If we are to salvage any good at all from 2020 then these decisions should be discussed now and governments need to consult the community about these changes. COVID provided cover for governments to make captains calls without consultation or oversight as it was an emergency. Once this is past with the vaccine,A they need to consult the community and take us along for the ride rather than impose rules from on high. Parliament must also approve the new rules rather than one health official alone calling the shots. That’s not the Australian way long term.

Energy rebates could put cash back in vulnerable Queenslanders’ pockets Vulnerable Queenslanders are being urged to check their eligibility to receive the Palaszczuk Government’s electricity and gas rebates worth up to $416 per year. Minister for Energy, Renewables and Hydrogen Mick de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Government was investing $212.8 million in 2020-21 as part of Queensland’s economic recovery plan to help vulnerable Queenslanders with the cost of living. “This past year has been tough for everyone, so I’m urging all concession card holders including pensioners, seniors and veterans to contact their electricity retailer and see if they are eligible for our Electricity Rebate worth up to $341 per year,” he said. “The government estimates that there are thousands of eligible households who are not taking advantage of the assistance and we don’t want these Queenslanders to miss out. “Just call your electricity retailer and have your concession card details on hand, and if you’re eligible, you’ll be able to start accessing the rebate as a credit on your account.” Minister de Brenni said the rebate was currently helping approximately 625,000 Queenslanders but there were more people who could be benefiting.

Computers and accounting programmes Buying a new accounting software is like buying a new car. Everything is there but some of the systems requiring adjustment to the standard set up. Like setting your radio to your favourite stations, you must set up your personalised chart of accounts. From there you need to set up your business details, BAS period if reporting and wages period if reporting, Bring in the opening balances of bank and debtors. Having payroll means entering all your employees’ tax and personal information, their rate of pay, holidays, hours worked per week, leave loading and holiday pay. Next is to set up the STP reporting to the ATO either weekly, monthly, or quarterly. Then setting up your bank details for downloading bank statements to “assist” you in data entry. Setting the regular payments for the computer so it can recognise them and post them to a predetermined account. Don’t forget the GST codes either for each account.

up hasn’t been omitted. Finally at the end of the year you send all the data to your accountant who spends the next 4 hours or so working out just what you have done and why your Activity Statement Account does not balance with the tax payments or receipts and why your GST in and GST out are growing in size each year, and why your payroll info sent to the ATO does not match the payment made to employees, and why there is no figure for income tax instalments in the accounts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Beachmere residents failed by poor water management plan Beachmere residents are calling for a Class Action suit to be taken out against Moreton Bay Regional Council after several houses were inundated with water in December. Whilst Disaster Management plans were activated and sandbags made available, there was little or no activity to ensure the combination of high tides and onshore winds was minimised or alleviated. Instead, the Council has been dismissive of offers of local knowledge and prior activity, in some cases dismantling water “gates” which had worked perfectly well for several years. A combination of factors, mostly instigated by the Council, exacerbated the effects of what was, comparatively, a “small” high tide. Works undertaken at the nearby Biggs Ave dog park where creeks with natural flows were widened and deepened, perhaps for a more aesthetic appeal under the recently built bridges, simply allowed more water to encroach further into the land. Unfortunately, the waterway that water travelled into has been left overgrown for some months, a visual example of the failure of Council’s water management plan in the area. The access between one of those waterways and the lake has been closed, resulting in never before seen flooding of homes.

The Beachmere Lake itself has recently had work commence for refurbishing of lake walls – a job which surely should not be undertaken during the wet season or should have been completed prior to the wet season and influx of high tides. More importantly, the channels which carry the tidal water in and out appear to have been “closed” … perhaps to allow the work to be carried out at a low water level. Equipment stored around the lake, including at drain sites and waterways, did nothing but impede any water trying to escape. A long term resident, with many years local knowledge and a career as a highly regarded hydrologist, built a gate system which would allow any high rising water to be drained. This simple, but effective, solution which saved many homes over the years was removed by Council staff some months ago as “not required”. The recent rain event may have been a concurrence of high tides and onshore winds but it is, perhaps, the concurrence of failures by MBRC to address the water issues that caused the most angst in the tens of houses inundated. Many home owners are still waiting for insurance assessors to visit or their claims to be paid. In the meantime, sand bags are now stacked by doors and driveways waiting for the next occasion they will be required.

Issue 59 2021 - We're here for you!

“ Quelle que soit la question – la response est non !! “ Australia is now paying for 30 years of infantilising social engineering – Steve Waterson – The Australian-20/12/2020.

Cranky Lizard welcomes you to the Local Paper for 2021 and encourages you all to think carefully about what we are doing. The coronavirus and unelected health officials plus Governments at the State level have diluted our independent, questioning spirit, and we have slithered into a state of sullen compliance as we allow bureaucrats to enter into all the tiny crevices of our lives. Our famous two-fingered salute has been stolen ! And it is about time that we bloody got it back, which is why Cranky Lizard opens this piece with the beautiful French words –

“ Whatever the question – the answer is No !! “ Australian citizens give elected Governments, at three levels, Local, State and Commonwealth, the authority to act on our behalf, make laws that should enhance our lives, act sensibly when spending our money, and, to accept the fact that at predetermined periods, they are held responsible to us at the ballot box. And, in general terms, we have done that, in this country since Federation in 1901. And, again in general terms, it has worked for us as a Sovereign Nation. And, times do change, our globe is a dynamic place; we live in unprecedented times and Governments must, and have, taken extra-ordinary measures of control over our lives in order to protect for us from a pandemic called – COVID-19. And, they have, in some States, done that better than other States.

Citizens in all states have accepted fierce intrusions into their lives by various means from State Governments. They, the citizens, have done that because the various State Governments, on the advice of their Health Officers have indicated that fierce intrusions are necessary to prevent the country from being overwhelmed with this COVID-19 virus.

Cranky Lizard reckons that these

intrusions have been the most invasive since European colonisation.

There have been examples where State institutions have simply overstepped the mark – • You will remember the pregnant woman in her house, arrested for placing a notice on FaceBook. • You will all remember the two old ladies, in the park in Melbourne surrounded by five Police Officers. • You will all remember the 800+ Australians who died in Victoria as a result of mind-numbing incompetence by the Victorian State Government…the Victorian Government does not remember anything about that, neither their Cabinet Ministers nor their senior bureaucrats made any decisions relating to that matter; things just happened. • You will remember the young woman who could not join her family for her father’s funeral. • Cranky Lizard does not suggest that these matters were maliciously carried out or that they were deliberately cruel. Cranky Lizard points out that these matters happened. That is all! Cranky Lizard notes that the various State Police Departments were asked to enforce impossible situations, and for the most part Australians can be proud and respectful of our Police.

And, Cranky Lizard is very clear about the fact that our Police deserve our respect. There are some situations, however, where State institutions were not covered in glory; the nonsensical Black Lives Matter affair in Melbourne, thousands of people wandering about Melbourne during COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, celebrating, demonstrating whatever crazy name you want to give it, in support of an African American Marxist movement based in the United States of America, was not a splendid occasion. No amount of arm-waving, foot-stamping, lip scrinching, eye-rolling anger will ever make it so! It was just bloody nonsense! Victorian Police defended their support for this activity, but could not find a reason to support ANZAC DAY. On each of these occasions, there were many Australians tested to the limit of their tolerance, but they complied with the draconian laws because their commonsense told them it was necessary. How easy is it, to move from a

tolerant, free-ranging society to an intrusive, controlled and threatening environment lead by State Governments advised by unelected bureaucrats? How easy is it? Cranky Lizard says you can see for yourself how easy it is. And that is why State Governments must be reminded, by their constituents, that they are what they are because we say so! We know that in Victoria once again, Government stuff-ups are occurring. An example – a business in a Melbourne shopping centre was named a ‘ hot spot ‘ and was told to close – the company was called, by the Victorian Government, La Coste Boutique. A business by that name did not exist, the business the gimlet-eyed DHHS power mongers meant was a coffee shop called Le Costa! Cranky Lizard notices the long, mad queues of frustrated Victorians lining up to get home at the borders of Victoria, which are closed. Testing facilities are not able to cope with the demand and the arrogant, patronising shambles, like a creaky old Millard caravan with thin wheels, just rolls on. No apparent plan to deal with the problem. No idea what comes next. Just mindless bureaucracy ordering people about.

It is in this phase of the National emergency, that is COVID-19, that all Australians must be particularly aware of the potential for abuse of public

powers. Already, political divisions are becoming apparent. Cranky Lizard is advised, by overseas connections, that many public commentators see that various State Premiers have used their powers under the Public Health Act to enhance their own political fortunes. Be that as it may, the fact is that once draconian powers, such as those applied under the Public Health Act, are let out of their yard it is not so simple to get those powers back into their yard.

So. Be aware of the potential for Governments, at all levels, to become addicted to extra-ordinary powers. Cranky Lizard urges everyone not to become complacent about this; question matters, do not merely accept directions with a shrug of your shoulders. Do not be unlawful but challenge all Government actions that are out of the ordinary, challenge them mentally if not physically. Which is why Cranky Lizard reckons we can end where we started.

In the first case, and until otherwise determined – “ whatever the question is, the answer is NO ! “ As this New Year unfolds carve your successes in stone and write your failures in the sand. Enjoy Your Days. And remember the 800+ dead Australians…

Practice responsible crab fishing this summer

Lunch at The Caves Pub For the first time in its 35 year existence, The Probus Club of Bribie Island Inc recently ventured north on an overnight outing comprising a five day stay in the Capricornia Coast’s popular coastal town of Yeppoon. Organised by full service travel agency travel at 60, the last remaining 16 places were snapped up by the club’s tours officer, Gabrielle Bain, on behalf of eight club members and their wives. All boarded QR’s tilt train at Caboolture Railway Station in early December for the seven hour trip to Rockhampton, where staff from Yeppoon’s Bayview Tower apartments conveyed the group to their accommodation.

The group was entertained each evening by an eclectic mix of artists, the most memorable being a presentation by a local bush poet who revealed a Japanese claim that Australia had hijacked their original version of Waltzing Matilda’s lyrics. He brought us all to tears with his rendition of the Japanese version, dressed in a kimono with a rising sun-embossed head scarf and thick lens glasses, substituting the words ninja, samurai and rirripond in the appropriate spots. A summer holiday on the Gold Coast is the perfect time to go fishing for mud and sand crabs, prompting a reminder to recreational fishers to practice responsible crabbing. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said crab pots in the Broadwater’s main navigational channels have recently been a problem for commercial marine operators. “Some crab pots have drifted into the channel with the tides, while others have been intentionally set there and this impedes the safe passage of vessels,” Mr Furner said. “Marine operators have reported accidentally running over crab pot ropes, causing their boat propellers to become fouled. “A good rule of thumb is to use a crab pot rope with a length proportionate to the depth of water where the pot is set to prevent an overlength rope allowing a potting apparatus to enter a boating channel.” Minister Furner said Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers will continue to monitor the issue and educate fishers about the importance of keeping navigable channels clear. “The proper use of fishing gear is ultimately the responsibility of fishers who need to be aware of Queensland’s crab fishing laws, including restrictions on equipment, size and possession limits,” he said.

Issue 59 2021 - We're here for you!

“I encourage recreational fishers to download the new ‘Qld fishing 2.0’ software app to familiarise themselves with crab fishing rules and regulations.” The legal requirements that apply to recreational crabbing in Queensland include: • In tidal waters, no more than four crab pots or dillies, or a combination of both, may be used or possessed on a boat per person at any time. • All crabbing equipment needs to be clearly marked with an identification tag showing the user’s surname and address and must have a light-coloured surface float attached when not tied to a fixed object. • The float must not be less than 15 cm in any dimension and also identify the user’s surname. • When the pot is tied to a fixed object, a tag that shows the user’s surname must be attached to a part of the rope that is above the high-water mark. • Sunken and unmarked pots are illegal. • Recreational crab fishers can avoid crab fishing equipment being lost by following these tips: • Check crab pots regularly and remove them from the water when they are not being used. • Ensure crab pots are heavy enough with enough rope attached to the float so they are not lost or pulled under water in strong tidal currents. • Check gear regularly to avoid it being misplaced during tidal events. • Set crab pots below the low tide mark and in a sufficient depth of water at all stages of the tide so that crabs are not exposed to the sun and unwanted or regulated crabs can be released alive. It is an offence if the apparatus contains marine product and is out of the water. Under Fisheries regulations, penalties for crabbing-related offences can include on-the-spot fines of $266 for taking or possessing one to three undersize crabs, $533 for more than three undersize crabs or a female crab and $1344 for interfering with crabbing apparatus.

For detailed information on Queensland fishing rules and regulations, download the ‘Qld Fishing 2.0’ app, visit www.fisheries.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23.

NEIGHBOUR ABUSE HAS NO RELIEF Senior Abuse has had much publicity and is well known as physical, verbal and financial abuse of elderly members of our community. Neighbour Abuse might not have the same high profile but it is being suffered by just as many, if not more, members of our neighbourhood and community. Whether you own your own home, or are paying handsomely for the privilege of renting, your home should be your castle and you should be able to relax and enjoy your home and garden without the stress of abusive, belligerent, overbearing neighbours. Reciprocally, you need to consider those same neighbours when planning your next “house party”. Unfortunately as access to Police becomes more and more limited, as the age of “entitlement” becomes more accepted and the onus is on “others” to prove their case; more proof is required to establish your case and it is making life for some members of our neighbourhood very difficult. Disputes over fences, noise, falling palm and tree branches or barking dogs are just some of the reasons neighbours fall out. With the reduction in properties available for sale, some residents have been subjected to ongoing harassment so as to encourage them to move offering opportunities to purchase properties at reduced rates for family members or investment purposes. With more people working from home, increased interaction of residents has not always led to an

increase in that “good neighbour” spirit. Approaches to Qld Police put the onus back on the person asking for help, with suggestions to keep a diary, install cctv and record interactions and conversations (legal in Qld if you are one of the parties of the conversation). Take it further and you need to lodge a complaint for a Good Neighbour Order and pay costs and lodgement fees. These Orders need to be updated regularly with additional costs and fees on each occasion. The list of neighbour annoyances or grievances can be long and lengthy. Whether the neighbour is abusive, aggressive, or just plain “hard to get along with” it is perhaps worse during the holiday season when tempers fray and disputes erupt. From loud music, barking dogs, cars parked across driveways and on grass verges, early morning power tools or mowers, or an overpowering smell from a garbage bin placed strategically against the neighbour’s fence, the list can be seemingly endless. Disputes over supposed “breaches of privacy” where new houses are built with windows overlooking the neighbour’s yard, noise complaints when a family is just happy and laughing or when a neighbour is forced out so that family members can move in, are just some of the disputes currently pending in the region.

Caboolture Warplane Museum Big Toys for Boys and Girls

By Staff Writer Mozza The Caboolture Warplane Museum is a great day out, particularly for kids bored on holidays and the young at heart. Turn left at Aerodrome Rd at Caboolture, near the Bribie Island Brisbane turn off on the Bruce Highway and go to the very end of the road and you will find this hidden treasure trove of memorabilia and restored aircraft still flying today. At $10 per adult the museum presents good value and the volunteers guide you through history with their knowledge of the displays and equipment housed at the museum. Each piece has been lovingly restored and information provided about their past provided on display as you potter around the exhibits. Aircraft are the main focus with a

wars. A display of the exploits of Warrant Officer Leonard Waters, the first indigenous fighter pilot of WW2 and his plane Black Magic is fascinating and contains full details and artefacts from his service to this country. In addition to these aircraft and associated paraphernalia there are anti-aircraft guns such as 40mm Bofor’s, a Brengun Carrier tank, searchlights, radios and navigation equipment. A civil aviation display will bring back memories of airlines like TAA and Ansett complete with on board menus from the 1970s offering cigarettes for 40c. There are many, many other items on display and much of it is interactive which will entertain the kids while the parents and grandparents recall the past. I would thoroughly recommend the museum for a half day out or drop in on your way back from the Caboolture shops next time you have to make the journey to make it so much more worthwhile.

Now, the rebate is provided to a range of people who need it most, including Low Income Health Care Card holders. Minister de Brenni said Queensland pensioners, seniors and veterans could also be eligible for a gas rebate and should check with their gas retailer. “There are also savings of $74.92 per year available for eligible Queenslanders through the Government’s Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate - all account holders need to do is contact their gas retailer to see if they’re eligible,” he said. Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) CEO Aimee McVeigh said the rebates could help people experiencing financial pressure. “QCOSS urges people who are experiencing hardship to contact their energy retailer as soon as possible,” she said. “If you need help to do this, reach out to your local neighbourhood centre.” Minister de Brenni said the Palaszczuk Government had also helped more than two million Queensland households with their utility costs through its $400 million COVID-19 household relief package. “Last year, Queensland households received a $200 utility rebate and a $50 asset ownership dividend,” he said. “We were able to deliver these savings straight into the pockets of Queenslanders by arranging with electricity providers to automatically apply the credit. “The Palaszczuk Government is committed to supporting Queenslanders and this new year, we’d love to see all those who are eligible gain access to the electricity rebate on offer.” For more information on the Electricity Rebate or Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate visit: https://www.qld.gov.au/ community/cost-of-living-support/ concessions/energy-concessions/ electricity-gas-rebates or contact your electricity or gas retailer directly.

Hamilton Island Alternative to Cruising in 2021

Passage Peak View With the COVID vaccine rollout still underway globally, it will take a fair while for the cruise industry to return to normal levels of confidence and capacity with a number of vessels being retired early during the pandemic. For the many Bribie Islanders and surrounding locals who missed their cruise fix in 2020 an alternative may be just the thing in 2021 while things slowly go back to normal. With interstate border rules chopping and changing the lure of a Queensland tropical island may be just the ticket for the cooler months starting around Easter. Booking now could save you a bundle and also give you and your friends something to look forward to as moods brighten in 2021. Airlines are struggling and are offering flights to Hamilton Island from $155 each way in the coming months with specials cropping up from time to time.

Cats Eye bay view Accommodation options on the island fit a range of budgets and include the Beach Club Resort, Qualia Luxury Spa, Reef View Hotel, the Palms Bungalows or a range of holiday homes for rent for groups. Golf carts are for hire and are a great way to get around the island from your room to the Marina and to the bush walking and sightseeing trails and lookouts and bars. The Marina has a wide range of services such as restaurants, pubs, cafes, pizza bars, boutiques, bakery, information centre, boat hire and art galleries. An IGA store provides the place to pick up the basics and a bottle shop allows a cheaper alternative drinks on your balcony overlooking Catseye Beach. Your round of golf starts at the Marina where a boat will take you and your clubs to Dent Island to the championship golf course on a spectacular tropical island.

There are many walking tracks to Flat Top Hill, Hideaway Bay, Passage Peak, Coral Cover and Escape Beach. All these walks offer spectacular views and an abundance of wildlife with Passage Peak offering a view of Whitehaven Beach and the surrounding Whitsunday Islands. After your morning walk you will be ready for a swim with the turtles at Catseye Beach or a sail on the catamarans on the aqua blue. Lunch at the beach bar followed by a swim in the many pools before cocktail hour awaits. A must is the half day boat trip to Whitehaven beach a 40 minute ride away. Rated as the best white sand beach in Australia it won’t disappoint and the trip is a lot of fun with the helpful crew providing shade, drinks, food and transfers from the boat to shore. Water planes are also available for your visit providing spectacular views around the islands. The best day out from Hamilton is the one day reef trip which takes 2 hours motoring out to the Hardy’s Reef platform in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The trip offers dive options for first timers or experienced divers, as well as snorkelling and underwater viewing craft. The array of coral and fish is amazing with huge Maori Wrasse, Queensland Groper, Trevally, Parrot Fish and a variety of smaller Finding Nemo like varieties as far as the underwater eye can see. On board lunch and drinks on the return journey gives you a chance to chat to other reef lovers and check your photos in an idyllic setting. A half day boat hire will allow you to explore the islands and see the

luxurious houses on Hamilton and surrounding islands and visit North Beach, a sandy haven in the coral crusted archipelago. No licence is required for these dinghies and there are jets skis available for the more adventurous. Seven to ten days on the island is perfect and a ferry to Shute Harbour provides additional options if you want to extend your trip out. This ferry also gives you access to other nearby islands such as Hayman and Day Dream. Your direct flight home to Brisbane, of one hour fifteen minutes, will make you wonder why you haven’t done this sooner as it’s all so easy for us here at beautiful Bribie Island to island hop. Know Your Rights and Responsibilities at Your Club By Staff Writer Mozza Bribie Island and surrounds is dominated by clubs and associations run by volunteers and retirees for the benefit of the community. Bowls clubs, RSLs, rescue and protection organisations, hobby clubs, restoration bodies, surf clubs, fishing, snooker and gardening societies as well as charities that care for the sick, elderly and under privileged on our society. The people who volunteer to run these community organisations contribute large to our island and do enormous amounts of good. If you are one of these people or are considering becoming one you should know your rights and responsibilities under the law to protect yourself and the organisation you serve. The Department of Fair Trading administers the Incorporated Associations Act in Queensland and offers the following advice to management committees who have a number of responsibilities including: Identifying the association The committee must ensure the association identifies itself properly by: • nominating and maintaining a physical address in Queensland for serving documents (this cannot be a post office box) • putting the association’s name on the common seal • making sure the association’s full name appears on all official documents, such as:-

1. advertising 2. business letters 3. accounts 4. official notices 5. publications 6. cheques 7. receipts Managing financial affairs The committee must manage the association’s financial affairs by: • registering the association’s land or interests in land • making sure that the financial statements are audited or verified annually • controlling the business dealings and operations • keeping up to date with public liability insurance (if needed) • keeping proper records of all transactions and the financial position of the association. Reporting to members The committee must uphold their responsibilities to their members by: • making a copy of the association’s rules available to all members • following the rules for calling and holding meetings • calling an annual general meeting (AGM) every year (within 6 months of the end of the association’s financial year) • ensuring a secretary is elected or appointed at the AGM • submitting all the financial statements (audited or verified) at the AGM

•

keeping minutes of all committee and general meetings. Lodging reports to the Department of Fair Trading (DFT) The committee must ensure the association reports to DFT by: • lodging an annual return (you will be sent a lodgement form each year) • notifying DFT about any changes to: 1. office bearers (president, treasurer or secretary) 2. the association’s postal address 3. the secretary’s residential address • making sure that these reports don’t contain or omit anything to make them false or misleading. Acting for the association Committee members should: • act in good faith • use reasonable care and skill while doing their duties • tell the committee if they have a possible conflict of interest (e.g. if a proposed action will financially benefit them) • not make false or misleading statements to the association’s members • know the secretary’s duties and make sure they are properly carried out • bring any relevant letters, emails or other association documents to the committee’s attention. • Follow the association rules • The association rules might set

out extra responsibilities or impose specific restrictions on the committee. All committee members should be familiar with these rules. Office bearers’ responsibilities President The president: • chairs the committee • plays a major role in general meetings. Under the model rules, the president must chair every meeting they attend. If they can’t attend a meeting, another committee member can sit in as acting chair. Secretary The secretary’s duties include: • keeping the register of members • sending and receiving letters, emails or other documents • advising the president or treasurer about urgent matters that arise from letters or other documents • taking nominations for the committee • telling members about meetings (giving plenty of notice) • calling and convening all meetings • arranging the venue • preparing the agenda • gathering and presenting any relevant documents • taking and keeping minutes of meetings and making them available to members.

Scammers thrive in social media marketplace

away. It’s not worth the risk.” The Minister said scammers can also use fake emails claiming to be from a secure payment provider. “Another Queenslander thought they had purchased a car advertised through an online marketplace and was advised not to reply to the advert but to email as the car was being sold for a relative,” Mr de Brenni said. “The seller said that due to COVID-19 and previous bad experience they would use a third party company to collect payment so the buyer deposited $5,500 with the company.

Queensland online shoppers are being warned about the number of vehicle scams being carried out on social media trading platforms. Acting Attorney-General Mick de Brenni said Queenslanders online marketplaces can sometimes hide the true identity of the seller and may not always be the best option when it comes to making a significant purchase such as buying a car. “We know online marketplaces are becoming increasingly popular for buying everything from pot plants to a used car,” Mr de Brenni said. “The Palaszczuk Government is helping consumers to be aware of the risks when using these platforms, especially when transferring money for significant purchases. “Between 1 January and 30 November 2020, Scamwatch received more than 250 reports of Queenslanders being scammed when trying to buy a vehicle, caravan or motorhome. “One Queensland consumer lost $39,000 when they tried to buy a vehicle via a popular online marketplace. Despite the regular vehicle checks appearing normal, the car was never delivered and the seller could not be contacted.

“The buyer didn’t hear back and contacted the third party payment company who said the payment link was not theirs.

“Scammers will lure you in with a fantastic deal so our advice is that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” The Minister said these steps could help consumers stay safe: •

avoid buying a car from someone who is unwilling to meet you face to face or can only be reached by email never buy a car that you have not seen in person and had inspected by a professional don’t let someone put you under pressure by insisting on completing the transaction as quickly as possible avoid payments that are international money orders, wire transfers, pre-loaded cards, cryptocurrency andOPEN! cheques.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie urged motorists in the market for a new vehicle to do their research and be on the lookout for any suspicious behaviour. “Don’t buy sight unseen and be wary if the seller wants to meet you in places such as shopping centre car parks, or they offer to bring the car to you. This might mean they don’t want you to know where they live,” Ms Ritchie said. “Ask plenty of questions. If the seller is genuine, they’ll be able answer questions about the car off the top of their head. Be suspicious if they avoid questions, are vague on the detail, or the story just doesn’t sound right. “Always get a car history check and very carefully compare details against the car. “The buyer then saw the same car a week later re-advertised with the same photos and story with a slightly different email, and another car being advertised with the same story.” Consumers can visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ website to conduct a free check of a vehicle’s registration number or VIN to confirm its registration status, make, model and body type. Additionally, consumers should also consider having a pre-purchase mechanical and vehicle history check completed by a reputable organisation and a REVS check which tells you if the vehicle has money owing on it from a previous owner. Local identity David Glanville found a bottle floating in on the King Tide on Monday 14 December at Toorbul. Instead of binning it, David realised there was a message in it. He carefully opened the bottle which had been sealed with silicon, and read the message from Evelyn Whiteoak. A very happy message, with a lovely thought. The bottle has been “somewhere” since 11 November, and could have arrived at Toorbul from the North (Caloundra area) or from anywhere South – Bribie Island, Moreton Bay or even the Bay Islands. If you know about this bottle, we would love to hear from you. David is thrilled with the two charms that were also in the bottle.

January Fishing Report Big variety of fish caught and plenty of impressive catches among them.

The start of summer has been a tricky period for fishing, although we’ve seen a big variety of fish caught and plenty of impressive catches among them.

Beach, which is the summer resting area for thousands of migratory wading birds. Drifting is usually the better way to go, anyway, because it takes you over a lot of underwater structure, which the fish love to hang around! Sitting between the lock entrance and Buckley’s Hole has been a favourite spot for finding some pretty goodsized fish, including bream, snapper and grassy sweetlip. About 100m out from the Bribie side of the Passage, from IGA to the bridge, there is a nice drop-off, which works well for fishing

Harry and Darcy were happy to kiss their bream; Dad had a better idea.. Last month, we talked about the possible onset of La Nina. Less pronounced at this stage than perhaps expected, the rains have been regular enough, but not often heavy enough to flush out the creeks. That good storm in the middle of December was just in time for the trawlermen, with strong south-easterlies stirring things up so that everyone got the prawns they wanted for Christmas. The weather since then has largely been dry and calm, with light winds from the north. The steady weather conditions are likely to make bream, snapper and sweetlip relaxed and hungry, which is good news for fishing. Lots of 30cm+ bream are being taken home on days like this, and from all through the Passage. Tara and crew spent an afternoon fishing near Parrot Island and brought home seven bream – all at 30cm or above. Will got up behind the Avon wreck, among the mangroves, to catch himself a nice 40cm bream. Daniel and Ricki had a good haul (three big bream, a grunter and summer whiting), near Shag Island. On the same day, brothers David and Charlie, had 30cm+ bream between them, from a drift past the Oyster Regeneration project, outside Pacific Harbour. A reminder here: please don’t anchor in the sign-posted area just north of Pacific Harbour – besides being the site of the specially built oyster cages, which can be easily damaged by your anchor, it is also very near Kakadu

on the drift. Flathead have been harder to find lately but there has been some luck using lures. The water being very warm, fishing for them on the sandflats is not always successful, although that’s where you’ll find them on the cloudy days. The best flathead spots over the past month have been the gutters, especially on a rising tide. The mid-December rains mixed up the water enough to get the flathead going for a couple of days, and they were being readily caught on the sandbanks at the mouths of Ningi and Elimbah Creeks. Matt released a 67cm flathead, after catching it near Banksia Beach using soldier crabs for bait. Hard-body lures were also working well at the time, over the flats. Like every other month of the year, shovel-nose sharks and stingrays are abundant throughout the Passage, especially over the shallows, and more than anything else they are a lot of fun, even if you don’t want to eat them! Be careful not to injure them if returning them to the water; current best advice is to cut the line near the hook, rather than try to prise it away. At the time of writing, we’re all still waiting for that La Nina to kick in, although we have been promised some excitement over the next couple of days, (Jan 7/8), with a bit of rain. Keep an eye on the weather reports and be ready to strike in the couple of hours before the rain hits – when the barometer moves the bream should go crazy!

Illegal crab fisher faces crushing penalties An illegally-modified fishing boat has been crushed and the owner fined $6,000 in the Brisbane Magistrates Court as a warning to anybody considering breaching the state’s fishing regulations. Speaking at Action Metal Recyclers, Oxley, Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the boat’s seizure and destruction followed a 2019 operation by the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) targeting an illegal crabber in the Brisbane river area. “The fisher had modified the seats of the vessel to create concealed compartments where our officers found regulated mud crabs,” Mr Furner said. “In handing down the penalty, the Court noted the impact the vessel modifications had on the safety of the vessel and its occupants. “This person had received previous infringement notices and knew very well that taking female and under-sized crabs was against the law. “Today we’ve reduced the 3.7 metre boat to recycling material. A motor and trailer will be sold. “We have done this as a deterrent aimed at protecting jobs in both the commercial and recreational fishing sectors, and building a sustainable fishery for future generations. “QBFP uses a range of techniques and technology to uncover illegal activities, as well as information from the public through Fishwatch. “Our state’s fisheries resources belong to all Queenslanders, and it is our job to protect fish for the future.” If you suspect illegal fishing activities, call the 24 hour toll-free Fishwatch hotline 1800 017 116.
