I ask the question are we becoming nothing but a bunch of “flappers”?

It seems that more and more people cannot express themselves without using the arms/hands - i.e. “flapping”.

Is it me or others noticing this terrible habit when one is talking?

It seems to have become very habit forming and those who”flap” do it most of the time.

I watch the news and other TV programs where people are interviewed or asked for comments, and almost immediately the flapping starts!

It was George Bernard Shaw who stated “ The power of accurate observation is often referred to as cynicism by those who don’t have that quality “. The answer to the question about will the promises be kept is short and abrupt....NO ! , and the reasons are

many and varied. The sole point of the exercise was to have the Labor candidate elected. The candidate is some form of professional starter having failed in two previous elections in other seats. That has been achieved so we all can go back to sleep for another 4 years. You will not see further work on the Bribie Island road unless it is Federally funded and even then the State Government will dilute that. Forget anything about the bridge or another one. And forget any dreams about a hospital unless it is privately funded and even then the State Government will climb onto the bandwagon. Bribie offers nothing to the State Government as we are basically a retirement community. All you will hear for the next 4 years is the blame game, COVID and the Federal LNP Government. What you won’t hear is our incompetent Labor State

I have heard a few stories about the Koopa and things that happened on its voyages including locals selling their wares to passengers on the boat in exchange for beer etc. I am sure you will have stories of interest to locals and we will follow these up in the new year. Government is broke and has been for some years. Look at their form over the last 2 terms. Just what have they achieved ? At least there is one positive outcome from the election and that is the LNP opposition was found to be so badly wanting in structure and policy. The Divine Right to rule no longer exists.

And secondly the “Lady Brisbane” we spent Christmas Day on board for lunch and cruise three or four years ago, and myself, my daughter and extended family are spending Christmas Day cruising and having lunch – it is a great day – this year.

Dear Janette, Thank you for your letter as it is always difficult to gauge the level of reader interest in various stories on the island and surrounds. I have received your photograph copies and will contact you to scan the originals into my computer for future publication if this is OK with you.

The response was not what the Europeans were used to, with uniforms and ranks of obedient soldiers. It was a more logical form of retaliation by a people who normally share everything for the good of the community.

But the Sydney Wars were real, and many died. Further afield there were massacres - the only one I learned of (well after school) was at Myall Creek, because this was the first where whites were charged with murder. But there were plenty of others.

I f Aussies were taught the full truth, they would understand why 26th January looks more like 1066 than the Battle of Waterloo to the first peoples. No one celebrates the Battle of Hastings - it was a defeat, even if they do celebrate Guy Fawkes’ attempt to destroy Westminster, because it is a day for fun with fireworks.

AA may not know that, when the Centenary of Settlement was celebrated on 26th January, 1888, the local dispossessed Aborigines refused to take part. Another group of dancers from elsewhere had to be brought in and taught to act out what the organisers of the re-enactment demanded.

There is plenty of evidence for a different history from the one I (and probably AA) was taught at school.

A scientific study by Bill Gammage of the records kept by early surveyors counteracts the lies I was told about the Australian landscape. Later generations, after the damage was done, claimed that the paintings were

Peter Liley at the Bridge of the 286 meter Rio da Janeiro Container Ship For almost two decades, Captain Peter Liley has guided thousands of ships into and out of the Port of Brisbane. As part of the team at Brisbane Marine Pilots, Peter is responsible for the safe navigation of ships within the Brisbane Shipping Channel and Moreton Bay Marine Park, which starts at Caloundra Heads on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland and finishes at the Port of Brisbane.

Peter Liley’s 500 year-multi-generation Merchant Naval Family history has fed his passion and respect for the ocean and lead Peter on a distinguished 42-year professional journey. A journey that has taken him around the world including five seasons aboard Australia’s Antarctic Research Flagship, Aurora Australis - two seasons in Command.

As he contemplates life after an epic career, I had the pleasure of meeting with Peter at his Moffat Beach Home on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, to talk everything, family, ships, food and life after the ocean.

Born in 1960, Peter is the oldest of three children. His Merchant Naval family history dates back to Peter’s Dad’s Grandfather who was a Marine Pilot on the River Thames in England. In fact, the original family home still stands at Gravesend on the River Thames.

Peter’s parents, Margaret and Richard, lived at the Sea Hill Pilot Station on the northern tip of Curtis Island, located 40 kilometers south east of Rockhampton in Queensland. Here, Peter’s dad worked as a Marine Pilot with the Harbours and Marine Department, guiding ships into and out of Port Alma and the Fitzroy River. Despite Margaret and Richard living on Curtis Island, Peter was born 1000 kilometres away at the Cairns Base Hospital. As Peter’s mum, Margaret, said, “In those days, you weren’t allowed to remain at the Marine Pilot Station beyond a certain point in your pregnancy, so we decided it was best that I went and stayed with my mother in Cairns.

It is a long way from Curtis Island, however the alternative was a 12-hour boat and car journey to Rockhampton with no family support or place to stay.”

Over the next four years, Margaret and Richard went on to have two more children and were posted to Maryborough and Bundaberg, before Richard finally secured a posting in Brisbane as a Marine Pilot and where the family established their Stafford Heights family home in Brisbane. In 1993, Margaret and Richard retired to a new abode in Shelly Beach on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, where their balcony view took in the Brisbane Shipping channel and added solace to a lifetime of caring for the safe passage of shipping into and out of the Brisbane Port.

It is fair to say that Peter Liley was destined to live a life at sea. Having avoided joining the Scouts, he instead signed up at TS Paluma as a Navy Cadet at the age of seven. Peter’s mum said, “We didn’t necessarily expect that Peter would go to sea or join the Navy, however I guess there was a reasonable chance of an ocean career, given that our family had been immersed in everything ship and

As a teenage Naval Cadet, Peter had an opportunity to go on short ocean trips with the Navy, many of which were on Moreton Bay. During this period, Peter took advantage of two additional Navy adventures from Brisbane to Sydney aboard the Australian Navy Landing Craft, HMAS Salamaua and HMAS Labuan. Peter said, “These landing craft were flat-bottomed 146 feet vessels which drew about 5 foot of water. The ships effectively rolled all the way down the coast to Sydney and despite being as sick as a dog for most of my first trip, I jumped on a plane, flew back to Brisbane and decided to go to sea – the ocean was my lifetime destination and passion.”

To put things into perspective, 1978 was the year when the Bee Gees scored three #1 singles with ‘How Deep Is Your Love,’ ‘Stayin’ Alive’ and ‘Night Fever’; Argentina hosted and won the FIFA World Cup; Midnight Oil released their debut album and Bjorn Borg and Martina Navratilova won Tennis at Wimbledon. It was also the year that 17-year-old Peter joined the Australian National Line (ANL) as a Merchant Navy Cadet. At the time, his father gave him three pieces of advice, “Don’t get married until you get your Master Mariner’s Ticket; don’t come home with a tattoo; and find a Government Job and don’t leave it.”

With this advice in mind, Peter was one of 24 Merchant Naval Cadets to gain employment with the Australian National Line (ANL). In those days, a cadetship would take 3 1/2 years to complete which included two years at sea

and one year at the Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania, and a 5-week sea and ship induction course in Sydney.

One of Peter’s first postings after the induction training, was on board the Darwin Trader. This ship travelled on a regular 3-month journey up and down the coast from Melbourne to Darwin.

The Darwin Trader frequently spent a “long weekend” discharging cargo in Darwin.

Peter said, “As part of our cadetship, we were expected to stay at sea for a full year and take three weeks annual leave when time allowed. The cadetship was an intense period, and despite each of us wanting to be at the ship’s steering wheel, we soon learned that the major part of our job was devoted to ship maintenance - keeping the ship upright and stopping the water from coming in.”

In 1980, Peter headed off with the 23 other cadets (only one being female) to the Australian Marine College in Launceston. At that time, the college was based in an old farmhouse while they were building the new training college. Peter’s intake was the first for this new college, where the class learned everything about the theory of seamanship from navigation to ship handling. Following college, Peter was posted onboard the ‘Sydney Trader’ which operated back and forward across Bass Strait.

As a young man, Peter was driven to succeed and worked hard to honour at least one of his late father’s pieces of advice, ‘Don’t get married until you get your Master Mariner’s Ticket.’ On graduation from his Cadetship, Peter went on to sit an oral exam, as well as

a written exam, at the Department of Transport in New Farm, Brisbane, in readiness to go back to sea. At still just 20 years old, Peter was awarded a 2nd Mates Foreign Going Certificate which qualified graduates to ‘stand a watch’ on a foreign going ship; today this is called a ‘Watchkeeping Certificate.’

Between 1981 and 1984, Peter worked hard to fast-track his time at sea to achieve his Master’s Ticket. Peter said, “You needed to clock up 36 months at sea before you could sit for a Master’s Ticket so I offered to forego regular days off, annual leave and shore time to make sure I could complete my remaining 6 months in the same year.”

This process included further studies and examinations to finally achieve his Master’s Ticket in 1988 at the age of just 28. Unfortunately, across the same period of history, the shipping industry took a major downturn in business and, over the next 5 years, Peter was forced to work across all corners of Australia and throughout our northern regions, including Papua New Guinea and Singapore.

Peter secured his first command role on ‘Lady Penelope’ in the offshore oil industry, and then went on to join the Aurora Australis in 1991, on his first Antarctic Voyage. After five seasons with the Aurora Australis, it was time to head home to be with his family and first born, Tom, in Cairns. The battle was then on to follow in his dad’s footsteps and join the Brisbane Marine Pilots. Naturally, these roles proved tricky to obtain, as family history could do little to earn a spot on the Pilot Team. It took a few more years of shipping and pilotage up and down the Queensland Coast before Peter finally struck gold and joined Brisbane Marine Pilots in 2002.

In constructing this story, I had the pleasure of joining Peter on-board the 286-metre container ship, the Rio de Janeiro, on the 5-hour trip into the Port of Brisbane. Spending a day with Peter provided me with first-hand exposure to the role of a Marine Pilot but more importantly, gave me an insight into the character and professionalism required to work alongside foreign going ship crews and the challenges of steering large ships through our tight and sensitive shipping channel. Peter said, “As Pilots, we need to be expert at communicating with diverse foreign crews and facilitating a safe passage of every ship into and out of the Port of Brisbane.”

Most work days as a Marine Pilot begin with a transfer of the pilot to the ship via a Pilot Launch Vessel, which are based at the Pilot Station in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. Once the launch is alongside the container ship, the pilot climbs up a pilot ladder, which is a rope ladder suspended from the ship, sometimes as high as 9 meters. In order to accomplish this, the pilot launch must use its powerful engines to push up against the ship for as long as it takes the pilot to climb the ladder onto the ship.

This is a highly managed manoeuvre, undertaken by experienced crew, however, from my perspective, all I could see was a Bunnings style rope ladder hanging down from a boarding hatch, on an excessively large metal ship. The aim is to grab the ladder at the top of a wave and make a dash to the top. It’s a bit like climbing a fence with a hungry tiger on your behind - scaling at speed, with extreme caution, so as not to get the fence jammed between the legs! – Yes, I was wearing a life vest in the ‘unlikely’ event that I’d end up in the ocean. (I will point out that I was provided with a thorough safety induction prior to boarding the pilot vessel and signed the necessary paperwork).

Once aboard the ship, we made our way under escort from the ship’s crew to the bridge, where pilot Peter familiarized himself with the ship’s equipment and bridge crew. The Master of the ship and

At that point, Peter took control of the ship and proceeded through to the channel, which takes approximately 5 hours depending on tide and speed.

Peter said, “Every ship is different by way of its performance and size so we need to maintain good communication with the ship’s team at all times to understand how a specific ship can be maneuvered. It is also important to know that the ship’s anchors, engines and thrusters are all working and have not been damaged during the voyage to Australia. Our role is to constantly manage and mitigate risks as they evolve which includes keeping watch for small vessels that may unknowingly venture into a ship’s path. It can be more challenging at night because we need to use radar and visual observations to

They even need to be on the lookout for some of the bigger marine creatures. As Peter pointed out, “In the Mooloolaba Region, we are blessed to have the annual migration of vast numbers of humpback whales transiting our region annually. Every year, our Pilot Boat operations adopt special procedures during these times to lessen this risk of striking whales. The pilot launches are fitted with infra-red cameras to detect whale activity. Our vessel operations are also modified when required to enhance the safety of the magnificent marine life that pass through the Moreton Bay region.”

The journey on a large ship across the passage is breathtaking, especially as you are positioned about five stories high on a ship’s bridge looking back through Kings Beach, Bribie Island and Moreton Island. Given the ship’s length, speed and the surrounding Marine Park Environment, extreme care is taken to follow the pre-planned navigation path. In fact, the Brisbane Marine Pilots provide a detailed ‘Port of Brisbane Pilotage Plan’ to the ship’s Captain for sign-off prior to entering the passage.

The pilots also carry and install independent temporary navigation systems which connect to mobile laptop computers to manage the ship’s path into port. These independent navigation software systems are designed to achieve ‘pin-point’ accuracy of a ship’s position throughout the journey, thus continuing to ensure the safety of both ship and passage.

The entrance to the Port of Brisbane is where a pilot earns their money. I’ve done some sailing and tied up a few small yachts in my time, however it’s a whole new experience observing Peter directing the speed and movement of two unsighted tugboats on a two-way radio at the same time as controlling a ship’s speed and direction as the ship gets closer to a port dock. It takes a lot of skill and patience to spin a 286-metre container ship 180 degrees in a port and slowly rest it against the dock – but we

There is a terrific book titled, ‘Through Ice & Fire’ – The adventures, science and people behind Australia’s Famous Icebreaker written by Marine Biologist and Author, Sarah Laverick – it is worthwhile reading.

no better way to get back home to the Sunshine Coast. Yes, the return trip also involved using a similar Bunnings style rope ladder to exit the ship. The only difference was that it was now 11pm and I needed to climb down backwards, with haste, while displaying an aura of confidence, onto a moving Pilot Boat, under a spotlight, during a mild storm, with a sizable ocean swell – we made it back to the Pilot Station safely, said our goodbyes in the pouring rain, and I slept like a well fed baby.

Over the past 17 years with Brisbane Marine Pilots, Peter has been instrumental in advocating for the development of new training programs and systems that now lead the way across the international piloting communities.

He has also been President of the Australian Marine Pilots Association from 2009-2013 and only recently resigned from the role of Managing Director of the Brisbane Marine Pilots after 2 years, to continue his ‘day job’ as Marine Pilot.

It is clear that the Australian Navy Cadets empowers youth to achieve their potential and adopt the Australian Navy values of honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty. It is with this empowerment and these values that Peter Liley was able to forge a career and maintain the 500-year-old family legacy as a Merchant Navy Commander.

It was a privilege to share a snippet of this remarkable story of a courageous, resilient, and loving man that I was introduced to by Andrew Liley, Peter’s youngest son more than 6 years ago at a small café on Kings Beach.

In 5 years, Peter will look to ‘swallow anchor’ (retire) and continue on a journey already fulfilled with a Sunshine Coast lifestyle supported by his best friend and wife, Patricia, who shares a passion for food, family, travel, wildlife, photography and entertaining.

After my interview with Peter, we cracked open and decanted an aged Barossa Red Wine whilst sitting in Peter’s ‘Happy Place’ in Moffat Beach.

Peter’s dad would have been quietly proud of his boy given Peter achieved all three pieces of his advice.

Q&A Can you describe one of your most challenging ocean voyages?

I was on an Antarctic Mission on Aurora Australis in 1993. Part of our scientific mission was to sail from Macquarie Island to Herd Island, which means that we had to head west in the ‘Roaring 40s’. The journey took us 23 days against 17metre seas with winds blowing at a minimum of 40 knots. You may need to Google ‘Ships in large Oceans’ to visual-

We have a multi-faceted and linked approach to performance, training and safety. Training is part of our DNA and we have a monthly pilot meeting to review risk, test innovation and assess improvement opportunities. We put in place systems that prevent mistakes from becoming disasters. We believe that recruiting the right people is paramount to achieving a safe environment.

We also work with the airline industry to share and adopt standards to test our people and systems. These include engaging Check pilots who oversee our Pilotage Skills on ships and test our pilots at our simulator facility. We have designed our own independent navigation and mapping system that ensures that every Pilot can map and deliver a safe passage for each ship into and out of the Brisbane Port. Effectively, pilots must compete a Pilotage Plan which collates a ship’s information and maps the path of a ship – this is signed off with the ship’s Captain prior to entering or leaving the Brisbane Port.

In recent times, we have engaged an aviation psychologist - a professor of Human Factors - to look through our systems and advise on how we could improve our safety and people. We learnt many years ago, that it is not about building up the pilot to have all the skills and all the understanding – we worked out that humans are fallible and that humans will make mistakes.

It’s about managing those mistakes to prevent them from becoming accidents.

How do you go about becoming a Marine Pilot?

Firstly, you would need to have a Master Mariner’s License and have diverse experience with vessel operation across varying environments. Our recruitment is undertaken in 3 stages – Interview - Psychometric Testing - Simulator Sessions. Our pilot recruitment procedure has developed over the last 30 years to today’s exceptional standards, ensuring that all necessary consideration is given to finding the right people for the job.

Our training program is world-class and has been developed over years under the direction of and with the input of pilots, experienced in the intricacies of pilotage in Brisbane. The ever-evolving training program is tailored to suite the experience level of the incoming pilot, be that with previous pilotage experience or not, and exceeds standards set by our regulator. The hands-on training is supplemented by work in the simulator to ensure an all-rounded training experience.

What are the biggest risks to working as a Marine Pilot?

The role and responsibilities of pilotage are set out in our operational and systems protocols.

These are designed to minimise risk and ensure that we operate within the agreed safety parameters.

The biggest risk to pilots is what we term, ‘Risk Creep.’ This relates to the changes from delinquent technology to newer automated technology and the increase in the size and capacity of shipping fleets. When I first began my role as a Pilot, we would Pilot ships that were 220 metres long and about 32 metres wide. These days, ships can be 300 meters long, 48 meters wide and weight 100,000 tons. The risk is that, as pilots we need to maintain a higher level of diligence with automated GPS Technology and adopt to the variable handling concerns of larger ships. We have had to build extra parameters into our systems to adopt to these changes. Fortunately in our waters, we do not face the risks of pirates as other colleagues do in some of the overseas ports.

How many staff does the Brisbane Marine Pilots Employ?

We have an overall staff base of approximately 70 staff including launch crews that operate the Pilot Vessels out of Mooloolaba. There are 32 Pilots who are based across Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. And our operational and administration teams based in Albion.

Because we operate a 7 day / 365-day pilot service, Pilots usually work 9 days on and 7 days off.

How long does it take to bring a ship into the Brisbane Port?

The ships need to anchor or hold off Mooloolaba at in a specific GPS Location. Once we board a ship and finalise our plan into Brisbane Port with the ship’s captain, the journey takes about 5 hours depending on the speed of the tides and port traffic.

What is the largest ship allowed into the Brisbane Port?

The ships are limited to 350 meters long - 50 meters wide and 140,000 tonnes.

How do you define success as a Pilot?

Success to us is the safe passage of a ship into and out of the Brisbane Port with no adverse events. Our charter is to ensure that ships that enter the passage will not interrupt or cause harm to other vessels or our surrounding marine park environments.

What does Peter Liley do after he departs the ship’s bridge for a final time?

In seaman terms, when you retire from the sea, we call it, ‘Swallowing the Anchor.’

My wife, Patricia and I are passionate family people, foodies, music lovers and lovers of the lifestyle on the Sunshine Coast. We love to cook all types of food but thrive on the Argentinian Barbeque – we have deigned our back entertainment areas around the asado [a-sah-doh], an Argentinian term which describes both the social gathering of a barbeque, as well as the way that it is cooked. Clearly the Aborigines had learned over thousands of years how to maintain an open landscape to prevent the wildfires we now experience. I hope this is part of the history now being taught rather than the half-truths of the last century.

H.Beneke Dear Editor, Here are a couple more letters I wrote last month: Anxious Ant points out that history cannot be ignored or re-written. But this is exactly what has happened with Australian history. It happens everywhere because the “victors” always tell the story, which isn’t always the truth. There were plenty of lies which needed re-writing about, for example, the events in Russia at Chernobyl, or what happened when Darwin was bombed.

The writer claims that facts should hold sway over emotions, and yet writes about convicts as “poor emaciated souls with bare bones and sinews”. She claims that convicts were starving, but in the history I learned, few convicts died because Captain Phillip was determined to keep them healthy to establish the new colony. He gave them the same diet as the sailors (who complained),

stopping off to replenish supplies with fresh fruit and vegetables whenever he could.

And if we need to learn the “facts”, which ones should we learn? There are so many of them, and so little time in primary school to teach them before students can make choices say, between World Geography and Australian History as was my choice in Grade 8.

I searched through the Grade 5/6 book which I have kept, and the only reference to the first peoples was that the explorer, John Eyre’s companion was “murdered by the blacks”. Of the seventeen explorations mentioned most were elsewhere, only seven in Australia. Our curriculum was wider than just Australia, so a lot of stories were missing.

I learned a lot about European settlers but nothing true about the real Australians - their history was ignored, as if it didn’t exist.

Dear Editor, In response to Gillian Adams, I too worked at a prepoll which was like no other I have experienced before (which as Gillian says are usually full of camerarderie...hmmm). I do wonder at Gillian’s tone when speaking to Ali, which she, Gillian, may have been unaware that she may have sounded curmudgeonly. I applaud Ali’s response because a) the LNP supporters were definitely out to get a rise from her and her supporters (which was more than evident ), and b) no doubt Ali was as exhausted as so many of us having stood out in the hot sun for hours and for Ali so much more campaigning all through the electorate and meeting people, so to be accosted as she may well have been (as opposed to engaged in a friendly open manner) she did brilliantly considering she didnt just walk away from Gillian, but apparently, according to Gillian, listened to her. I witnessed a great candidate campaigning with a big heart and focusing on Pumicestone ready to get all the promises met and more.

Initial inquiries suggest just after 11am an elderly man attempted to walk across Eucalypt Street in Bellara.

Police believe his vision was obstructed by a parked vehicle and he was struck by the Holden Colorado as a result.

Despite CPR being performed, the 79-year-old died a short time later.

New vintage club rolling along Beachmere Classic Vehicle Club is the newest group to gather in the region.

James Weston is well known to Beachmere locals for driving certain well known celebrities around the area in late December, so when he announced his intention to start a Classic Vehicle Club interest was high.

The Club kicked off with nearly twenty founding members and they have just been rolling along since then with nearly forty members involved currently.

Any owner of a car or bike which qualifies for “Special Interest Vehicle Registration” is eligible to join if they reside within 30 kilometres of Beachmere.

The Angels of Mercy hold the Curtain, which prevents us from seeing the Future Note : Harvey Fewings served as an NCO and a Commissioned Officer in the Australian Army during the 1960’s and 1970’s ; He was also a Commissioned Officer in the New Zealand Army during the late 1970s. He was wounded in action in Vietnam in 1969.

In the last two weeks, I have read stories in Australian print media that I thought and hoped I would never see again.

These are the stories which relate to the ‘ alleged ‘ activities of SAS troopers in action in Afghanistan during the last 10 or 15 years.

Most of you, reading these words, will know what I am talking about.

When the Prime Minister of Australia, in 2005, John Howard, committed Australian troops to Afghanistan he could have had no idea what lay ahead for those troops, for the Australian Defence Force and for Australia as a nation.

Had he been able to glimpse the future – it is unlikely that he would ever have lifted his pen to sign the order to commit the troops.

And, what that means is that you never know what you are getting into when you decide to commit your nations’ soldiers and your Nation’s treasure to military operations.

And, that is why it is so essential that you know as much as you can about what you are doing, why you are doing it and how long you are willing to keep doing it when military operations are on the table.

And, in the case of our commitment to Afghanistan, just as it was in Vietnam, I am not sure that our political leaders really understood what they were getting into…?

I am not comparing the military operations conducted, by our troops, in Vietnam to those conducted, by our troops in Afghanistan.

There is no comparison.

Afghanistan is and has been, the graveyard of Empires. The British Raj, with all their military strength and resources, were soundly defeated in Afghanistan in the last century and the Soviet Union, with its massive Army of tank and rifle divisions, was defeated in this century.

that I shall not address today.

Today I speak to the courage and commitment of young Australian men and women who served our Nation in Oruzgan Province in Afghanistan.

In our recent history,this Nation has sent hundreds of thousands of our young men and women to overseas conflicts to take part in military operations. We do so because of direct threats to our Nation’s security – Kokoda in the 1940’s – and upon request from our allies, SEATO brought us into Borneo and Malaya and Vietnam, and, obviously, we react to requests from our great friend and partner, the United States of America.

Simply stated, we went to Afghanistan because we were asked for help by the USA, and, it was also very much in our direct interest, to confront Islamic Terrorism and its hydra-headed leadership.

So we sent our military to Afghanistan, along with many other European and South-East Asian Nations.

For obvious political reasons, obviating military casualties was foremost in the minds of those making the strategic decisions, and so, for mainly casualty mitigation reasons, our Special Air Service Regiment and our Commando Regiments were committed to the task.

I make no comment about these decisions, other than what I have already made.

It was at that point in our Nation’s destiny that when our leaders looked towards the future, the Angels lifted their Curtain.

And just as well they did!

Military combat is a ferocious beast created by Homo Sapiens alone. No other species of life on this planet engages in military combat, or any kind of combat, for the reasons humans do!

And, it is a beast which consumes all those involved, one way, or the other!

Why is this so?

Our young men and women, our warriors in Oruzgan Province, were facing a brutal enemy with barely medieval standards of social behaviour. Men owned women; children were expendable, savage revenge and blood feuds were intrinsic to village life, and self-appointed warlords prevailed over the details of daily life.

It is an intriguing question: but one

the armed fighters of Islam, known as the Taliban, and, through vigorous military action destroy their influence over peoples’ daily lives thereby, hopefully, providing the Afghani people with a chance to build something better in their communities.

The details of the daily fighting, the stories of the fighting patrols, the application of the overwhelming airpower of our Allies are all contained in movies, books and television documentaries, and I do not intend to highlight any of those combat details – except to say – that the Taliban were barbaric enemies, tough, hard fighters using women, children, schools, hospitals and even animals as part of their tactical plans.

Such constant, cruel and casual brutality by the Taliban does not figure in the standard military expectations of Western democracies, and our troops were confronted with often shocking tactical decisions…do you shoot the boy on the side of the road who is holding a mobile phone and dialling a number which will send him, his IED [ read anti-personnel mine ] and you all to hell?

for these commitments.

Thousands of our young men and women have served with courage, compassion, and uncompromising toughness of mind when it comes to combat in Afghanistan – they have acted in a manner which reflects brilliantly on their actions.

Australians can be proud of them and the tough job they have done. Like all veterans of combat, that ferocious beast will live in them forever, and they will all handle it differently – but, they will all handle it.

What they don’t need is the hysterical media circus currently unleashed across our country.

Uninformed, sensational, self-serving and unsubstantiated comments by “ Colonel Blimps or similar armchair blimpish experts”. A repeat of previous hysteria from the Vietnam War, about alleged battlefield atrocities.

Our soldiers have brought no shame on themselves, their comrades, their uniforms, their combat units and the Australian Army in general by their actions in Afghanistan.

The answer is Yes. You do! Otherwise, you are dead or destroyed.

I shall proudly stand amongst them any day, anywhere!

But you pay a terrible personal price for those actions. It is anathema to our people to shoot children in military operations. But is it not for the Taliban, it is normal practice, and you will be dead or disabled unless you confront this reality quickly?

The alleged actions of a few have no currency when it comes to the actions of the many.

Facing that reality each day of your life as a combat soldier in Afghanistan forces you build a shell around your soul; so that you can go on functioning with your comrades in arms. You are secure in your base one minute, and within the hour you can be walking amongst bits and pieces of human beings, hearing sounds and seeing images, the like of which, will never leave you.

When you return to Australia; to normal daily life in this country, no one knows, and not many care, about what you have seen or heard.

Only other veterans can know those things.

Community respect is freely given to veterans, by our Politicians, our Community Leaders and our Community in general, it is evident on days like ANZAC DAY, Remembrance Day and occasions when we pause to reflect on the price we pay, as a community

Terrible events occur in military combat; reality becomes distorted, and memories often mercifully blank out the sights, the smell, the sounds and savagery of human combat.

And.

Until proven in a Court of Law in Australia; allegations are just that- allegations!

Curiosity drives me to ask two final questions:One: Why was a Canberra sociologist – with no obvious Defence or military experience used to investigate and report upon battlefield soldiers?

Two: Why did not the ADF use its investigative service, the ADFIS, or Military Police, to pursue these matters?

Changes, Challenges, CHOCOLATE….

Merry Christmas! Firstly a HUGE THANK YOU to all our amazing clients who supported us throughout 2020, without all of you we wouldn’t be Fit Beyond 50.

I know I say this every year, but I do sincerely mean it, and this year has shown us how truly lucky we are to have such wonderful, supportive and dedicated clients.

Saying it has been a year of change for us all is an understatement.

For me one of the saddest changes was stopping of my Heartbeats classes, these are still on hold but I’m hoping that I may be able to restart them in 2021. Also not holding our usual Spring Into summer 12 week challenge was strange for us, but in September times were unfortunately still too uncertain.

For us personally, like many of you, the changes have at times been tough, with nearly all of our family overseas they feel even further away than before. Sadly we also said goodbye to two of our furkids, leaving a very large space in our lives and on our sofa.

With all that has happened it’s easy to sit around navel gazing about the changes, after all, a lot of navels are easier to gaze into than before!

Have you found that being restricted and more sedentary has caused your scales to make up ridiculous numbers and that when you’re bored, your fridge, and not your TV, is your actual entertainment hub?

Well enough of this! Put some clothes on and stop gazing at your ever increasing crumb filled navel! It’s time to remember that the only time you should ever look back, is to enjoy how far you have come, and we should all be proud of how far that is.

For a start, we all now know how to wash our hands (It’s weird that some people had to learn that), we discovered that we constantly touch our faces ( sooo hard not to do that), that hand sanitiser and hot chilli have the same chemical properties if you rub your eyes after using it (stingy!) and most importantly that superheros have been wearing their masks wrong all this time, which begs the question, why didn’t we get to wear capes that matched our masks?

Yes, as challenging as it is, it’s time to look forward to another year and to consider what you want to do and who you want to be from now on. Here is your chance to use the changes that happened in 2020 to ensure you’re happier and healthier in 2021. I’m sure you’ve learnt a lot about your reactions to uncontrollable change. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others.

That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements.

Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

These exercises are a great way to “warm up” your body to start your day. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. You can do these sitting on your bed or in a stable chair.

FINGERS AND WRIST WARM UP Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Bend your arms at the elbows at hold them at waist level. Clench your fists, release and spread your fingers as wide as you comfortably can. Repeat 10 times or as many as you are comfortable doing..

SHOULDERS WARM UP Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Lift and rotate or “roll” your shoulders SLOWLY forward. Then SLOWLY lift and rotate your shoulders back to the starting position Rest and then Repeat 10 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing.

NECK WARMUP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up.

SLOWLY Lower your chin towards your chest and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your chin back up to return to the starting position.

Keeping your chin level SLOWLY Turn your head to the right and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your head back to the centre so you return to the starting position.

Keeping your chin level SLOWLY Turn your head to the left and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your head back to the centre Return to the starting position.

Repeat each stretch 3 times and rest.

BACK WARM UP #2 Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Interlock your fingers and put them in front of your chest with palms facing in. SLOWLY Stretch your arms forward and upwards to chest height and gently push your hands away until you feel a stretch in your upper back . Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. SLOWLY Return your arms to the starting position. Rest for 10 to 30 seconds and repeat 2 to 4 times

Don’t be caught out by online scammers when shopping this festive season With Christmas just around the corner the Office of Fair Trading is warning online shoppers to not get caught out when shopping online for Christmas gifts.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman wants Queenslanders to be aware of online scammers and know their consumer rights when shopping online.

“Since COVID-19, more and more people are doing their shopping online – but there are risks that consumers need to be aware of,” Ms Fentiman said.

“We have heard stories of online shoppers who have fallen victim to dodgy traders and with less than a month to go to finish the Christmas shopping, we don’t want to see anyone miss out this festive season.”

Queenslanders are encouraged to check the business reviews and make sure their website is secure before making any payment or providing any personal information.

Secure websites feature a closed padlock in the address bar or the address starts with ‘https://’ not ‘http://’.

And consumers should always check that they have legitimate contact details before making a payment or providing any personal information.

The Attorney-General said if the product is faulty, or it doesn’t match the description you were given, you are entitled to a refund, replacement or repair “Whether you have shopped online, in store or from an overseas website,

your consumer rights still apply,” Ms Fentiman said.

“If anything goes wrong with your online purchase, the retailer that sold it to you must provide a remedy.

They cannot just direct you to the manufacturer, importer, or delivery company.”

“This year is expected to be even busier for our postal services so make sure you check the delivery timeframes,” she said.

“It’s also worth remembering that if you paid via an online payment service or by credit or debit card, you may be able to reverse the transaction if there are issues with receiving the product.”

The Office of Fair Trading’s top tips for online shopping: • Always check you are dealing with a reputable seller.

• You have the same rights as you would if you bought from a walk- in store.

• Check with traders what their cut-off dates are to guarantee pre-Christmas delivery.

• If products are faulty or do not match their description, the trad er must fix the issue. They cannot refer you to the manufacturer or importer.

Fake websites With the festive season nearly upon us, ‘tis the season for online scams.

The Financial and Cyber Crime Group are reminding Queenslanders to be aware of Grinch-like scammers and be sure to stay alert to scams such as fake websites.

Scammers often set up fake online stores and social media pages, claiming to sell popular items at incredibly low prices.

If a product’s advertised price seems too good to be true, there’s a very good chance it is.

Other telltale signs of an online scam include a website with minimal information about delivery, returns or contact details, and requests to pay via unsecure and unusual methods.

Detective Inspector Vince Byrnes from the Financial and Cyber Crime Group said scammers often set up a fake online store with products at ‘too-good-to-be-true’ prices to attempt to trick shoppers into buying stock they don’t have.

“It is best to use online retailers or brands that you are aware of, trust and that offer buyer protections,” Detective Inspector Byrnes.

“We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again and again: be very wary of shopping websites that don’t use secure payment methods and offer big discounts for direct payment into accounts.

“And please, never pay anything via cryptocurrency,” Detective Inspector Byrnes said.

In 1971 the Australian Army in Vietnam leased eight Bell OH-58A Kiowa Helicopters from the United States Army for use in observational roles. These roles included visual reconnaissance, target marking and bomb damage assessment, air courier tasks, and radio rebroadcasting.

These helicopters were also used in “sniffer” missions to locate the position of enemy troops in the heavily vegetated jungle. They also conducted “top cover” missions to co-ordinate other groups and act as spotter support for other assets and units.

They were not armed but could cruise at up to 135 miles per hour (218 kmh) and cover a range of 460 kilometres.

One of these eight helicopters has been mounted in the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Bribie Island and overlooks the RSL across the road on Toorbul St at Bongaree. The helicopter is dedicated to all those who served in helicopter operations in Vietnam including No.9 Squadron RAAF (Huey), 161 (indep) Recce Flight and RAN (Emu) Flight which formed part of the US Army 135 Assault Helicopter Company.

The recent addition adds to the park which serves as a place of reflection and respect for Vietnam Veterans. The park has a sign which says “honouring the fallen and fighting like hell for the living” denoting the troubled history of treatment of veterans of this conflict.

Next time you drop in to the RSL with friends take a moment to visit the park and learn more about the Kiowa.

Everyone is keen to return to U3A classes and venues when it reopens on Monday 1st February 2021.

Covid-19 limitations and complex logistics dictate student numbers, but U3A plans to recommence Term 1 with a total of 158 classes, utilising all the Classrooms and main Hall at U3A, as well as 6 other outside venues and Tutors homes. This is a very complex logistics exercise involving Tutor availability, room size, time schedules, hygiene procedures, student numbers, space limitations, time between classes, and Covid compliance plans.

Because U3A closed half way through Term 1 of 2020, all financial members in 2020 will have their membership automatically extended for the full year 2021 with no further membership payment required.

Students who paid Term 1 class fees in 2020, will have their name automatically transferred to the same class rolls for Term 1 in 2021.

Payment for Term 1 Classes next year can be made at U3A only between Monday 11 January and Friday 15 January.

Students who do not wish to, or are unable to continue with the same class again in Term 1 2021, should advise the Tutor or U3A. If payment

There will also be ongoing restrictions including no tea, coffee or biscuits, use of fridges, controlled entry and exit, and frequent hygiene cleaning.

Mt Beerburrum A Steep Step For Anyone and 170 species of animals some of which are listed as rare or vulnerable including the peregrine falcons and glossy black cockatoos. The eastern quoll, southern glider and long nosed potoroo also call the area home. 11 species of native frogs also live in the wetlands between the rocky peaks.

These mountains are 25 to 27 million years old and are one of the oldest volcanic ranges in eastern Australia.

The Kabi Kabi and Jinibara people are the traditional guardians of the area.

Legend has it that Mt Beerburrum was the grandmother of the family of surrounding mountains including Mt Tibrogargan who was the father of the family.

Mt Beerburrum is a 35-minute drive from Bribie Island and surrounds up the Bruce turning off at Steve Irwin Way the trail head is a few kilometres past the exit and well signed with car parking next to the Beerwah School.

As part of the Glasshouse Mountains Mt Beerwah was the only volcanic peak to erupt above ground with the other peaks being volcanic plugs of lava that now stand high due to years or erosion removed surrounding soils and softer sandstone.

This area is home to a variety of trees

You can see the whole family of mountains from the summit of Mount Beerburrum which is a 3.5km or 1 hour 30 minute walk from the car park. At 280 meters above sea level it is the sixth highest Glasshouse Mountains peak and the last 750 meters is steep concrete path requiring reasonable fitness and the need to pace your ascent stopping every 200 meters to catch your breath.

You will walk through scribbly gums, rainforest and kangaroo grass on your journey and take in many views of Tibrogargan and other peaks on your way up.

An alternative for the serious walker is Yul-yan-man track which branches off the summit track for a 9 km return walk via Tibrogargan train head and returning via Soldiers Settlers trail taking 3 to 4 hours. This is a grade 5

walk for experienced walkers who have navigation skills for very rough, steep and unmarked trails.

Mt Beerburrum is the first peak to be climbed by Europeans in Queensland during the first inland expedition in July 1799. This was when Matthew Flinders was sent to explore the area sailing up the Pumicestone Passage crossing to Donnybrook and up Elimbah Creek to explore the mountains.

With two sailors and Eora indigenous headman Bungaree Flinders climbed the mountain to survey the Caboolture Sunshine Coast area and also spotted the Brisbane river. A sign of things to come.

The town of Beerburrum began as Australia’s first and largest soldiers settlement after the first world war.

At its height it had 1000 residents and the regions first hospital however their success was hampered by poor soils for farming, low produce prices and many of the men suffered psychological trauma from war.

Today it is a picturesque town of a few blocks of houses and shops and the Burrum Café which is well worth a stop to refresh and rest your weary legs after that final 750 meter walk to the top which according to my Iphone equates to climbing 56 flights of stairs. I think a pie and a cold drink is appropriate after all that.

Fares freeze on board for 2021 Ticket prices on Queensland public transport services will be frozen in 2021.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the move gives commuters certainty on costs for the year ahead as the state navigates its economic recovery.

“We’re backing commuters with this decision,” the Premier said.

“We need to encourage Queenslanders back on to public transport.

“This has been a year like no other.

“Thanks to our continued strong health response, we are seeing positive signs for our community and our economy.

“Every little bit back into the pockets of commuters supports Queenslanders, which in turn supports the state’s economy.”

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said, after two years of record public transport patronage in Queensland, patronage took a major hit this year.

“Throughout the pandemic, we kept essential public transport services running, increased cleaning and added more services to support social distancing,” the Minister said.

“Commuters are slowly returning to the network, and we will keep plan-

ning for a future when more people than ever use public transport in our fast-growing region.”

The Palaszczuk Government will keep building major public transport projects like Cross River Rail, Gold Coast Light Rail and upgrades to the Sunshine Coast line.

“These projects are creating jobs now and will support growing communities for decades to come,” he said.

“We are also continuing to back commuters with almost $500 million being invested to upgrade train stations across south east Queensland and make them more accessible, and $241 million to improve level crossings at Beams Road, Boundary Road and at Lindum Station.

“We are also continuing to trial smart ticketing technology for commuters too.

“Smart ticketing is a $371 million investment by the Palaszczuk Government that will, for the first time in this state, give every Queensland commuter access to the same system and a choice of multiple options on how they pay to travel, whether you live in Cairns or Coolangatta.”

Mr Bailey said the fare freeze was a win for public transport users, who were still benefitting from Fairer Fares.

“Fairer Fares has saved commuters more than $250 million since December 2016,” Mr Bailey said.

A freeze on ticket prices through 2021 means we will keep putting commuters first and encourage people to continue catching public transport.”

The freeze on ticket prices in 2021 applies to all TransLink and QConnect public transport services across Queensland.

“Real Men” is a song by British singer-songwriter and musician Joe Jackson, released in 1982 as the lead single from his album Night and Day and reached No. 6 in Australian music charts.

Some of the song’s lyrics include: What’s a man now, what’s a man mean Is he rough or is he rugged Is he cultural and clean Now it’s all change, it’s got to change more Cause we think it’s getting better But nobody’s really sure And later: Time to get scared, time to change plan Don’t know how to treat a lady Don’t know how to be a man Time to admit, what you call defeat Cause there’s women running past you now And you just drag your feet While it’s no secret Joe was a bit confused about manhood when writing this song his sentiments are now more relevant than ever. Men today are criticised everywhere you look for displaying “toxic masculinity” while at the same time still being expected to fulfil male role models in a society that is changing fast.

There is a big disconnect between the men represented in action films and the men that society expects now especially in a historical context. So after 1000s of years of conflict supported by governments carried out by men to create the world we now live in and enjoy it’s time to radically change men. This is a big job and confusing for the change generation which is this crop of men and boys.

An example of the inconsistencies can be seen on the football fields particularly in rugby league and union. Many of the top athletes are South Sea Islanders at the moment rather than local lads, so why is this? Many local young boys are being funnelled into soccer because their parents don’t want them to get hurt and therefore the talent pool for these contact sports in Australia is shrinking.

So on the one hand we get 60 000 people to watch these very popular sporting contests but many of our young men are not considered man

enough to play leaving them feeling inadequate. At the same time we want them to be more sensitive to the needs of others and want them to behave as gentlemen at all times.

Men have gone from being the bread winner in the house to sharing that role in the space of the last 50 years dramatically changing the relationship between men and women. Men’s difficulties coping with these changes are evident in our horrendous domestic violence statistics and men need assistance making this change.

Their relationship to their partners is vastly different to the ones they saw between their father and mother in many cases and a new normal has to be reprogrammed into men.

Many feminists will say about time but they are not experiencing the same change as the men who are ceding power rather than gaining it in the current changes. Think of one group of humans in history who have ceded power easily to another group in a short space of time. I can’t think of any, and so a plan needs to be made to help our young men and boys come to terms with their new roles with far less contradictions than at present.

Being expected to ask the woman out and pay for the date must become a thing of the past if it isn’t already as it leads to further expectations of being the protector, provider and the one to discipline children down the track. All of these roles conflict with the idea of equality and confuse these issues around the role of men in modern society.

Many of us dream of living “off grid” or as closely as possible to avoid the never ending increases in electricity price hikes and governments gouging profits from monopoly electricity generators, transmitters and distributors. Now the retail sector of the electricity market has been privatised they want to clip our ticket pretty hard as well.

So how do you know if it’s worth investing in a solar generation system and battery storage unit? Well The Local and Surrounds has crunched the numbers for you.

A case study of the average usage of two people in our region can be a useful guide to making these decisions.

Such an average household consumes around 20 kilowatts per day at an average 23 cents per kilowatt or $4.60 per day. This creates quarterly bills of around $420 and a yearly bill of $1680. If you are an air conditioner user you can round this

up to $2000 depending on the summer’s severity.

So the cost of a 6.5 kilowatt solar system is around $6500 installed and the average system this size will generate 27 kilowatts per day or 9855 kilowatts per annum. At an average 10 cents per kilowatt assuming you sell 20 kilowatts per day will nett you $2.00 per day or $730 per year. Assuming you save 23 cents per kilowatt on the remaining 7 kilowatts you use during the day you save $1.61 per day or $587 per year.

Assuming a 3% rise in electricity costs per year the total average yearly saving is $1633 meaning you will break even on your purchase in four years. Assuming the unit lasts 15 years you will go on to make 11 years of further profit totalling $17 963 in total profits. This is around $1197 a year.

From this return you have to pay for the 13 kilowatts you use at night costing 23 cents each or $2.99 a day or $1091 per year. This

means a profit of $106 per year or a 1.6% p.a. return on investment.

If you borrow money at 3% interest you are actually losing money investing in solar without battery storage. Alternatively if you’re not borrowing but earning 5% on this as part of your Super you are also behind.

If you add a Tesla Battery to the equation it changes the maths significantly as the unit costs a further $14000 to install making the total investment $20500. The average system this size will generate 27 kilowatts per day or 9855 kilowatts per annum. At an average 10 cents per kilowatt assuming you sell 13 kilowatts per day will nett you $1.30 per day or $474.50 per year.

Assuming you save 23 cents per kilowatt on the 20 kilowatts you use of your own battery power you have stored you save $4.60 per day or $1679 per year.

Assuming a 3% rise in electricity costs per year the total average yearly saving is $2670 meaning you will break even on your purchase in seven and a half years.

Assuming the unit lasts 15 years you will go on to make 7.5 years of further profit totalling $20025 in total profits. This is around $1335 a year or 6.5% p.a. return on investment and no power bills into the future for the full 15 years plus.

If you borrow money at 3% interest you are making money investing in solar with battery storage. Alternatively if you’re not borrowing but earning 5% on this as part of your Super you are also ahead of the game with this option. As always seek your own advice on this.

Of course if you sell your house before the break-even point you may lose unless the buyer pays more for the solar facility however this is always hard to gauge in the overall negotiation of a house sale.

There is also risk of solar damage outside the warranty terms or a breakdown so be sure to buy from a reputable company who honours their 15 year warranty.

Please note that the equation for solar without a battery improves the more daytime power you use on things like washing, ironing, cooking and other high use activities. Alternatively the equation for a battery owner is the same whether the cooking, ironing or washing is done anytime of the day as its using power stored from the sun during the day rather than drawing from the grid at night.

Big Plans for Small Business says the Queensland Government The Palaszczuk Government claim they backing Queensland small businesses to further drive economic recovery with a $140 million Big Plans for Small Business strategy funded in Budget 2020-21 to lift competitiveness and resilience.

Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said Queensland’s economic recovery is already underway.

“Small business is vital to this recovery as the engine room of the economy,” Mrs Farmer said.

“We also introduced a target of 25 per cent of all government purchases to be from Queensland small and medium size businesses from July 1 which will be extended to 30 per cent

by June 2022.

“Now we are committing another $140 million to back these valuable employers, building on our substantial support so far.”

The Big Plans for Small Business strategy will support private investment with: • An initial $100 million Business Investment Fund from the $500 million Backing Queensland Business Investment Fund to invest in small to medium sized businesses that have significant growth potential and will create Queensland based jobs.

This fund can support businesses to grow and expand into new markets including export markets - and will be

managed by Queensland Investment Corporation. $30 million of investment to increase skills and capability including: o Small business grants focusing on priority industry sectors o Grants to assist regional exporters to develop new markets o The development of a Business Ready Website o Continuing Small Business Month and the Mentoring for Growth programs o A study to link government procurement of new fibre networks with increased access for small businesses to high speed broadband in the regions o A Summertime Taskforce to support businesses to be more COVID-safe and move outdoors $10 million of investment to make the Small Business Commissioner permanent, and to reinvigorate the Small Business Advisory Council.

“Our Big Plans for Small Business strategy includes $25 million in small business grants with a focus on our regions as well as our young Queenslanders, women, social enterprises, culturally and linguistically diverse people and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders,” the Premier said.

“We will also continue our popular free Mentoring for Growth program,

as well as provide grants for regional exporters to help them reach new global markets.”

Mrs Farmer said Palaszczuk Government support during the COVID-19 pandemic has included $196 million in Small Business COVID-19 Adaption Grants, $950 million in payroll tax relief and $1 billion in Jobs Support Loans.

“The Small Business COVID-19 Adaption Grants have already helped about 20,000 businesses throughout Queensland with more than $176 million in grants,” Ms Farmer said.

“The grants have allowed businesses to update a range of processes and prepare for post-COVID operations.

Ms Farmer said the Small Business Commissioner role will become permanent, following a rising demand for businesses to navigate leasing disputes with their landlords.

“Our Small Business Commissioner has been helping hundreds of businesses and landlords during the pandemic – saving them time, money and stress,” she said.

“The Palaszczuk Government is committed to backing Queensland businesses and backing Queensland jobs.”

The Big Plans for Small Business strategy builds on the Palaszczuk Government’s response to the challenges faced by businesses as a result of COVID-19, including:

• $1 billion in interest free/low interest business loans, with 86 per cent going to small business • $950 million in payroll tax relief • $500 million for the Backing Queensland Business Investment Fund to support businesses that need capital to create jobs • $400 million in land tax relief • $196 million for Small Business COVID-19 Adaption Grants, paid to 19,000 businesses • $100 million in electricity bill rebates • $1.2 million to establish a regional network of business support officers in partnership with the Chamber

of Commerceand Industry Queensland.

The strategy will build on our 2016-20 Advancing Queensland Small Business Strategy which saw thousands of businesses supported through our grants, mentoring and other assistance and resources.

New aerospace facility to boost jobs on the Sunshine Coast The Palaszczuk Government will partner with a Sunshine Coast aerospace company to deliver a large-scale, state-of-the-art aircraft manufacturing and modification facility at Caloundra.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said HeliMods would accelerate the $10.3 million expansion of its current facility by almost five years thanks to support from the Palaszczuk Government’s Jobs and Regional Growth Fund.

“Aircraft manufacturing and maintenance has great potential to grow our economy and create thousands of local jobs in years to come,” the Premier said.

“By partnering with HeliMods, we can ensure that we create more of these jobs in Caloundra.

“Because we’ve been able to minimise the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in Queensland, we can now focus on rebuilding our economy.

“That means more jobs and more projects like this that will pump millions of dollars into the Sunshine Coast.”

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Steven Miles said the partnership would create more than 65 Sunshine Coast jobs.

“We have a plan to rebuild the economy and create more opportunities for locals,” Mr Miles said.

“Advanced Manufacturing is a growth industry. We’re tapping into this rapidly growing, global industry to stimulate our economy here in Caloundra.

Xmas message from Terry Young Member for Longman

Well, what a year 2020 turned out to be.

We started the year with drought and horrific bushfires in many parts of Australia.

While Queensland largely escaped the devastation that occurred in NSW, Victoria and the ACT, we watched in horror at what was occurring in our neighbouring states.

Like most Australians, Queenslanders wanted to do our bit to help our southern neighbours and we saw some true acts of courage and selflessness.

The true Aussie spirit of helping out a mate was on show for the world to see, and we dug deep to start the rebuilding process.

Then came the floods.

In February, parts of Queensland and NSW were soaked by more rain than many areas received in the whole of 2019.

But once again we dug in and endured.

Then the COVID-19 global pandemic struck.

Society as we knew it changed overnight as lockdowns and social distancing became the norm.

We as Australians adapted to this change remarkably well and the re-

sults of following the health advice, along with Federal Government initiatives that kept many businesses open and people in jobs, mean we are now bouncing back.

Australia has endured much this year, but I’d still rather be here than in any other country in the world right now.

As all things in life, there is good that comes from bad situations.

COVID19 has sparked a renewed level of patriotism for local manufacturing and reducing our dependence on other countries for items we purchase.

The grade 12 students graduating in 2020 will be some of the highest achievers we ever have. They have had to adapt and learn to deal with adversity.

Life has taught me that the greatest lessons are learned in the toughest times.

As we head into the Christmas period, it will be a good time to take a step back, spend time with our families, reflect on what we have lost, and appreciate what we still have.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

God knows you’ve earned it!

Stay safe on the roads and let’s hope 2021 will bring better days ahead.

Xmas bazaar a caroling success!

Beachmere was one of the few communities to celebrate the festive season when they came together at the Xmas Bazaar and Community Carols on Saturday, 5 December.

With Covid regulations and restrictions still in place, many towns and groups did not organize events at all this year.

Beachmere was not one such town and some 450 people attended a fun afternoon in Clayton Park.

Art, craft and gift stalls offered candles, jewellery, art works and handmade arts and crafts. Organisers said they really wanted to promote local artisans and encourage people to shop local and support local.

Bribie duo, Boom Baby, provided their unique brand of family entertainment while carols were led by members of the PLR Beachmere Singing Group, accompanied enthusiastically by Ann Watts who has been organizing and accompanying carolers at this event for several years now.

Children were kept entertained with treasure hunts and circus performers while the Beachmere Classic Vehicle Club had it’s first major outing with more than 20 vehicles on display.

Fortunately they were also able to give Santa a lift when the reindeer stopped at a field of carrots on their rehearsal flight.

Beachmere Area Network Group said the event was an opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate the festive season and support local artisans with their “Shop local, Support local artisans” campaign.

The next event on the BANG calendar for Beachmere will the popular Australia Day Picnic in the Park on Tuesday, 26 January.

Fighting For Medicare and Centrelink services on Bribie Island Bribie Islanders have told me they want to have direct access to Medicare and Centrelink services on the island.

For the past six months I have been working with Minister Stuart Robert to get these important services via an agency on the Island, and will continue to do so.

Once secured, this will save residents travelling to Caboolture and ease demand on the Caboolture branch.

Amelia Strazdins It is that time of year again- of last-minute shopping, inordinate amounts of fairy lights and Christmas trees. How quickly the year has passed, it seems only yesterday we were welcoming 2020 entirely unaware of the challenges the year would bring. However, as we approach Christmas, we must reflect on how fortunate we are here in Australia. Whilst many countries around the world are dealing with spiking Covid-19 cases and families must remain separated for the holiday season, we are lucky enough to cross state boarders and celebrate with those we love. This does not allow us the opportunity to become complacent but it does mean that Christmas lunch may be a little more meaningful this year as we fully recognise the importance of family and friendship.

For many of us Christmas may indeed be the highlight of the year, but for others the celebration is a reminder of the harsh impacts Covid-19, the bushfires and other events have had on families, businesses, and finances.

Those who remain impacted by job loss during the pandemic will be struggling during the expensive season, only adding to the number of Australians facing the stress of the impending day. It falls on us as a community to help support these people by donating to charity, food drives or giving time to help make someone else’s celebration special this year. This year more than anything it has become clear that everyone must band together in solidarity,

‘Smart’ Bruce Highway upgrades To bust congestion A section of the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane will receive additional “smart” upgrades aimed at busting congestion.

Christmas just provides another opportunity for Australians to display their friendly spirit and help those in need. Furthermore, we must also support small and local businesses.

Many, specifically in the Bribie Island community, have given many long hours and perseverance to ensure their businesses remain open and functioning. So, this year instead of heading out to buy from massive corporations or chains stores, turn your eye to something a little closer to home. From homewares to clothing, our local businesses offer it all- with the added bonus that through your support you are helping both the local community and economy. As we all gear up for a hectic and no doubt crazy December it is important to remember to remain kind, patient and socially distant. But reminders aside, the Christmas and New Year celebrations provide us with a much-needed opportunity to celebrate and enjoy the last weeks of 2020 before we head into 2021. Whilst we many are not travelling abroad this year, or may still remain separated from those we love, it is time to enjoy the festivities and appreciate the simple luxuries we are afforded living in Australia. So to all a good Christmas, may Santa make his designated stops and may we endeavour to spread a little bit more joy in the world.

The Federal government has invested $84 million for Stage 2 of the Smart Motorways program.

This program will transform a section of the Bruce Highway between the Gateway Motorway and Caloundra Road Interchange into a “smart” freeway.

Smart Motorways systems can include:

• Ramp signals at highway entry ramps to manage traffic entering the highway • Variable speed limit signs notifying motorists when speed limits have changed in response to changing road conditions • Variable message signs to provide information on incidents, available detours, delays and traffic conditions • CCTV cameras to monitor real- time traffic conditions.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said the technology would help bust congestion and reduce travel times on the critical section of the highway.

“Installing this kind of technology will improve traffic flow and motorist

safety, particularly during busy peak periods,” Mr Young said.

This is Stage 2 of the Smart Motorways program on this section of the highway.

It will link several ongoing Bruce Highway projects including the completed Smart Motorways Stage 1 project, the New Settlement Rd/ Deception Bay Rd overpass upgrade and the six-laning of the Bruce Highway between Bribie Island Rd and Steve Irwin Way. “Once delivered, these projects will provide an integrated Smart Motorways solution between the Pine River and Steve Irwin Way to deliver travel benefits including reduced stop-start travel, improved safety and more reliable travel times,” Mr Young said.

Detailed design for the Smart Motorways Stage 2 project is underway, with construction expected to start in early 2022.

The $105 million Smart Motorways Stage 2 project is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments under an 80:20 funding arrangement, with the Australian Government contributing $84 million and the Queensland Government contributing $21 million.

The Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads is responsible for project design and delivery.

The end of a fairly shocking year…Hasta La Vista…2020!

On 01 January 2020, if someone had said to you that this year would be a year that will rip the fabric out of our lives and change the way we do things for a long time; if not forever, you could have been excused for not believing them.

But that is exactly what this year,2020, has done.

It has changed us… all of of us; forever.

Cranky Lizard can still look into your eyes and know that it is you; but we, you, all of us are different, and we know that.

Cranky Lizard lacks the arrogance to remind you all how easy it is to hand your destiny to some esoteric idea at the ballot box…

As the next four years unfold, there will be some who will pause to reflect upon their choice at the ballot box.

But therein lies the essence of a constitutional democracy; we vote for whom we chose for reasons that work for ourselves, that is our right. We also have the responsibility [ because responsibilities travel right alongside rights ], to reflect upon our contribution to a political and economic mess if that is what grows from our choice.

Because men and women can do that.

Yes. They can.

It is not the media stars, the celebrities, the loud empty vessels of the Twitterati or the prancing, flouncing, bulging-eyed activists of all the various ‘ woke ‘ nonsense that screeches out for your attention – no. It is not that mob!

It is the fathers and mothers, the young couples pursuing their destiny in the world and the senior Australians who have broad experience of life’s bastardry: they are the people who will deliver when the ‘ chips ‘ are down.

Cranky Lizard has seen, as you have, during the tense and challenging winter months just passed how vital the workers in retail, hospitality, cleaning and maintenance services are to our community.

Professionals such as health workers, nurses, doctors, Police, Ambulance and Firies always have our attention, and they have our gratitude as well.

Enough of that!

Because of the quiet patience and determination of the above-named people and all the other citizens of this Nation; Australia has emerged from this pandemic a stronger sovereign state.

Christmas is the celebration of the birth Jesus, in a manger, near Bethlehem in what is now the vibrant and robust nation-state of Israel.

Quite clearly, it is not over yet. Still, Cranky Lizard is confident to say that this pandemic is under control and that we, as a nation, have developed systems, protocols and procedures which allow us to maintain that control.

We have weathered a fierce social storm and, at last, Christmas 2020 is upon us, which is good.

It is an ageless story which captures many souls as we imagine the three wise men arriving at the manger bearing gifts for the newborn child, who, in the Christian Faith, is accepted as the Son of God. It is a story of hope, goodwill and the infinite capacity of human beings to demonstrate the marvellous and vaulting ability to create kindness and charity in the world’s darkest moments.

Next will come the vaccine

– it will be

available for all, and Governments will decide the means of its distribution.

There will be those who will not want to have a compulsory vaccination – they will need to clearly think about the consequences of that – because there will be consequences.

As usual, Cranky Lizard travels widely across Western Queensland for life and family-related reasons. Hours into a journey, along a remote Queensland road, Cranky Lizard’s attention was captured by the appearance, at a remote cattle station gate, of an old fuel barrel mounted on star piquets and ridden by a dusty Santa Claus.

The Barrel rider was escorted by some equally dusty Christmas Fairys signalling that Father Christmas was indeed on his way along this road and that many young hearts will beat a little faster on Christmas Eve in those remote and lonely places.

Further along, on the same road, resting quietly on a fallen log, just inside the fence line, was a brightly coloured sleigh waiting for some reindeer…a reminder of some important work to be done!

Loves the colours, red, green and white! Loves the Christmas Carols and the peace they bring!

It is a beautiful time of anticipation of good times to come and renewal of friendships and family links.

And, there is time for reflections upon friends and family who have been lost ; the enhancement of their memories.

Australian Christmas beetles with their shiny green and gold carapace will never be forgotten, if you happen to have an outside light that attracts them by the hundreds of thousands; they squish when you tread on them, and they can get into the most amazing places.

They too, are part of it all.

Well, Cranky Lizard can say that the cake was bloody brilliant and if you are lucky enough to have some of this magnificent cake over Christmas you will know what Cranky Lizard means….it was bloody brilliant, and so were the Cake Angels!

Cranky Lizard rushes to point out that the Cake Angels had no idea they were giving cake to Cranky Lizard and they had no idea that Cranky Lizard was going to write about them.

Qld Govt launches major tourism blitz as borders reopen

The Palaszczuk Government will today launch a major tourism campaign in Queensland’s largest domestic tourism markets as the state’s border reopens to NSW and Victoria this week.

The campaign comes as new data reveals the government’s successful ‘Good to Go’ campaign has already driven 11 million visitor nights and pumped $1.5 billion into Queensland’s economy.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said an upcoming campaign blitz would reach 8.3 million people in New South Wales and Victoria.

“Queensland is Good to Go,” the Premier said.

“Tourism is vital when it comes to rebuilding our economy and supporting jobs.

“We’re saying to tourists in NSW and Victoria – we want you.

“Coronavirus has had a huge impact on our tourism industry.

“We understand that more tourists means more jobs. This marketing blitz will safeguard jobs and help thousands of tourism businesses right throughout the state to make the most of the important summer holiday period.

“It’s only thanks to the way Queenslanders managed this health crisis that we’re now in a strong position – and able to welcome back tourists for Christmas.

The Heat is On! The summer heat has truly arrived with a vengeance and now the decision presents itself, “should I garden in my spare time or should I hit the beach and relax?” Well definitely the beach is a must to unwind, but as I am running a gardening enterprise & servicing my customer base also, there is not a lot of time left at the end of the working week, so I must find the balance between work and play. As we Queenslanders know only too

and have replaced lawns with artificial grass and I can see why - from their point of view. Personally though, as I am a keen horticulturist, I would always prefer the real green over the plastic any day, but you have to weigh up the cost and how much care you can personally provide, the availability of water in the drought times and if it ever comes down to the dreaded - enforced - water restrictions, implemented by local councils, then the lawns will be the last priority - unfortunately. I have incorporated some gorgeous new crepe myrtle cultivars in some of my garden designs, which

Gorgeous summer flowers! well, if we want to get on top of our gardening and maintenance duties during our hot summer months, we better get up early and start before the heat of the day and irrigate your plants and lawns then. Otherwise you - and your plants, may end up withering away together.

With a good garden design you can plant taller canopy plants that provide some shade and shelter in the midday sun for your more fragile specimens underneath. Planting deciduous trees like frangipanni Plumeria rubra, will provide a glorious show of tropical splendour when in flower with a canopy of summer shade and when the tree is in its deciduous stage during winter, the sunlight can penetrate through the bare branches to the understorey specimens below. Most people live in small suburban blocks these days between 400 and 800 square metres and that does not leave a lot of room for nice shade trees in your landscape, so most garden designs need to be practical, functional, hardy, and sustainable. Most lawns, including mine need a lot of work, fertilising and frequent irrigation, pests and diseases require frequent attention so your prized sward can look its best. Some of my clients are frequent travellers

are non-invasive, grow anywhere from 1 to 4 mt tall, depending on the species (Indian Summer Range®) which can provide some shade in summer (although deciduous in winter), but enough to provide some shelter and still produce a spectacular flower show. Crepe myrtles make good perimeter planting specimens along colour bond fences as they look great planted among some of the hardier, sun - tolerant bromeliads, dwarf bougainvillea and geraniums which are fairly drought tolerant and they all put on a marvellous blooming show in spring and summer - with little maintenance required. Lawns and landscape, well I covered a great deal of pests affecting us here last month in the patch and in particular what was targeting our veggie and fruit trees. And due to the onslaught of sudden summer high temperatures and lack of regular rain-

fall, the lawns around the place are suffering from dry patch, dehydration, weed invasion and some are being attacked by pests such as Black beetle which happen to thrive during the drier climate and lawn grubs which are hovering around and laying their egg sacks around the eaves of buildings, trees, and structures presently. I actually took a short amateur video in my back yard (I had to be quick to catch them in action) on my dwarf Washington navel tree where I came across a lawn grub nest hatching and the miniature little caterpillars were wriggling free and dropping to the ground by releasing a fine lifeline thread of webbing to aid its descent to the juicy grass below. When you see these nests appear, they are mostly laid at night, best to broom them off quickly before the eggs hatch otherwise the decimation begins. It is hard enough trying to keep our lawns and gardens hydrated and weed free in these hot and humid conditions of late, so it pays to do the rounds and clear your building eves away from these moth egg sacks, or you may be disappointed later once you notice the dead patches popping up in your lawn. Fertilising should be done with caution if you have no irrigation, as the concentrated salts can dehydrate your lawn grass immediately, causing your patch to dry out further. Fungus gnats are another diabolical pest that can get into your veggie garden soil and potted plants.

Their larvae feed away on the fine root hairs of plants and you may see the adults - (miniature flies), hovering en-masse above the soil media, they like the top 3 inches of moist soil to incubate. Neem-oil apparently is effective in treating potting soil infested with fungus gnat larvae, if diluted correctly and applied as a soil drench, but the label clearly mentions for use on ornamentals only, so due care is needed to ensure compliance.

Update! Hail storm just wiped out my veggies, so If there were fungus gnats, they should have a head ache now!

Justica carnea syn. Jacobina carnea- ‘Pink’

Justica carnea - ‘Pink’, commonly referred to as the Brazilian Plume flower or flamingo plant hails originally from South America.

Justica are shade loving, evergreen - soft wooded shrubs, that have large deep green leaves with deep pressed veins. Justica - Pink, can grow to 1.5 metres tall and produce spectacular plumes of hot pink tubular flowers in early summer through to autumn.

There is also a white flowering variety - Justica ‘Alba’, and a golden one - Justica ‘Aurea’ and a rare red flowering one too. last week, I was working at my lovely client’s property in Banksia Beach and saw these beautiful Justica- Pink, in flower and popping their crowns up proudly along a partly shady position. In this situation, they are partly exposed to direct sun as the building shade has changed for the summer months, but these plants are coping just fine at present. While they do prefer shade, and will flower profusely in dappled light, they are fairly tolerant of variations to sunlight exposure. But how striking is the vivid pink crown on the specimen above? Justica carnea, respond well to dead heading, (removal of the spent flower heads) which can trigger another flush in the season, or the plants can be hard pruned in winter if they get too lanky. If you have some shady gardens and want some gorgeous flowers, these might just be the ticket.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach said QFES was prepared for a busy severe weather season.

“QFES is well-resourced to meet the challenges of storms and cyclones, thanks to our dedicated volunteers

and our specialist swift-water rescue firefighters,” Mr Leach said.

“QFES personnel train throughout the year to hone their skills so they can respond quickly and safely in an emergency.”

Mr Leach said recent severe weather in the south-east corner of the state demonstrated the destructive impact a storm could have on a community.

“The State Emergency Service (SES) received more than 3,400 requests for assistance after large hail wreaked havoc in late October,” he said.

“The SES and Fire and Rescue Service (FRS) firefighters worked hard to tarp damaged roofs, with support from our interstate SES colleagues in New South Wales and South Australia, while our Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers also provided assistance to affected residents, including welfare checks.”

Mr Leach said it was important residents took steps now to protect themselves and their loved ones.

“Removing debris from the around the home, cleaning gutters and downpipes, trimming overhead branches and securing loose items in the yard can make a big difference when wild weather hits,” he said.

“All households should have emergency and evacuation plans, a well-supplied emergency kit with important items and ensure their insurance is up to date.

Mr Leach said tourists should also be mindful of their surroundings in case the weather changed quickly.

“Those visiting Queensland this summer may have never experienced a severe weather event,” he said.

“It is important tourists tune into local media for weather updates, stay indoors during bad weather, never enter floodwater, and record the details of the locations they are visiting in case they need to seek help in an emergency.

“While our highly-trained personnel are ready to help when called upon, everyone needs to do their bit this storm and cyclone season to reduce the impact of severe weather.”

Caboolture river has one less boating hazard

A well organised team took more than five hours to drag this 33 foot sloop across the river and onto a tray truck.

The Qld State Government has spent over $7.6million removing derelict and illegally dumped vessels from Queensland waterways in the past two years.

With $20million committed over four years, the War on Wrecks Taskforce has removed 659 wrecks and derelicts from Queensland waters, with another 300 vessels identified as at risk.

The Caboolture River is just one of the waterways benefiting from that spending with one more boat being removed in early November.

The sloop, a single masted sail boat, identified some years ago as an unattended vessel requiring attention, dragged its anchor in recent high tides and ended up stranded on the sandbar at Bakers Flat.

This boat had been anchored near Mosquito Island in the Caboolture River for at least two years prior to that after being found floating abandoned in the river.

The Caboolture River has had a number of boats identified for removal, including a boat in September 2019 which was included in the popular TV show “Towies”.

A spokesman for TMR said that while some boats are abandoned due to due to damage from an accident, most boats become derelict or abandoned when owners don’t have the finances or the skills to maintain or repair their vessel.

The War on Wrecks Taskforce is run by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and is comprised of Parliamentary and industry representatives. As well as a program to remove unseaworthy and derelict

vessels from bays, rivers and creeks, the Taskforce makes recommendations to the Government in an effort to reduce vessel abandonment and create a culture of responsible boat ownership in Queensland.

One of the Taskforce’s recommendations is to introduce a Responsible Boat Ownership strategy to prevent vessels from becoming derelict and ensuring adequate and sustainable funding is available to remove illegal dumped vessels where necessary.

They will also consider other issues such as management of moorings, live-aboard vessels and marine infrastructure to improve the overall safety, cleanliness and amenity of our waterways.

The Taskforce is also considering a number of recommendations to the Government including changing the way new and used boat dealers are regulated; introducing a vessel identification scheme regardless of size, engine power or intended use; reviewing registration of vessels and licencing requirements and introducing ongoing safety inspections.

Other recommendations will look at reviewing the adequacy of regulations for prosecution of owners illegally dumping vessels and reducing the fees, charges and “red tape” of legally disposing of vessels.

“All our staff and volunteers are local, and really passionate about animals but, even better than that, they all love being part of an amazing environment that makes people happy,” Katrina said.

Katrina and David say White Ridge Farm is definitely still growing and evolving with a walk through bird aviary and some other big plans ready for early 2021.

The Pumicestone Passage’s mudflats and protected wetlands also support many species of wading birds.

During summer, huge numbers of migratory birds use Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage as their nesting-place; others use the area as a resting-place on their migratory path. Be aware of the no-go zone known as Kakadu bird-roost, on the north side of Pacific Harbour and marked on the Bribie Island Boat Charters’ chart – we all need to help protect these birds after their longhaul flights from Siberia and other northern climes.

Jimmy drifted past Kakadu and the nearby Oyster Regeneration project, bringing home two 40+cm snapper, using prawns as bait. He also had crab-pots out, so he had seven sand crabs for dinner as well. Sand crabs and muddies will be enjoying this change of weather, so get those pots out; just make sure they have plenty of line and good labelling.

From an early morning high tide, under the bridge. although it had already picked up from the ‘tween season lows.

Mangrove jacks, as well as some good flathead, have been turning up in the creeks and around the mangroves and oyster leases. Ningi Creek is the first creek on the left (mainland) side as you travel north from the bridge. As you explore the mouth of this creek on a low tide you will soon realise why locals love this area so much; but be careful not to get stuck on any of the sandbanks! The entrance is marked by a yellow cross beacon 2km north of Spinnaker Sound Marina.

The mouth of Ningi Creek is a popular area for flathead, and also sand crabs through the summer months (any month that has an “r� in it, is the usual saying). Along the oyster leases in that area is also good for bream but be careful not to interfere with or damage the working oyster leases.

The deep water in the middle of the Passage between the mouth of Ningi Creek and the bridge holds lots of grassy sweetlip and moses perch over the summer. The tidal run through there will be strong, especially over the last few days of December-early January, with the full moon, so you might have to fish on the drift. If you want to anchor, try to choose a period of time over the change of tide.

Just north-west of Pacific Harbour at the Avon Wreck, there are reports

were pretty happy! Shag Island lies behind the wreck looking northward and the relatively deep-water channel between them is always known to hold good fish, although it can leave you in shallow water with no obvious exit if you don’t watch the tide.

Heading another 2km north of the Pacific Harbour entrance, on the Bribie side of the Pumicestone Passsage is White Patch. White Patch is nicely protected from northerlies and northeast/easterlies. Anchoring in towards Wright’s Creek will also offer shelter from the regular south-easterlies! This spot holds juvenile snapper, bream, flathead, occasional trevally and mulloway and sand crabs. Trevally in particular, are showing up in numbers. The northern end of the White Patch gutter narrows and drops out quickly, so be careful of the big tides.

The start of the school holidays always gets the young local lads going, and some of the night-time bridge action has been interesting. Ethan, Connor and ben tell me that they caught a 39cm sweetlip and three around the 35cm mark, using squid and garfish as bait. The next night, they caught a 45cm snapper, but they thought the closed season was still on, so threw it back! The closed season is from July 15th-August 15th, annually, so they missed out on that one. I’ve been told the bream are plentiful around the
