Joan Fuller, Bribie Cove Retirement Village Thank you very much Belinda for delivering Issue 55 newspaper to Elimbah. I live in Elimbah and have missed reading the local news. Your paper has everything that every local paper should have and I read every page except the Sports section & fishing report (don’t fish). I really enjoyed doing the puzzles, not too hard but not too easy either (good for brain exercise). I also found the gardening page very informative. There is only one thing I noticed - you don’t have a proof reader eg front page and also page 4 Richard Ogden was named Roger Ogden under the photos, and there were also other minor errors, but I don’t really mind, because now I have something to look forward to receiving once a month.

I receive unsolicited phone calls from Indian call centres, they try to tell me everything from my computer is faulty to the police are on their way to arrest me for income tax evasion. But they never ring on a Sunday. At 6:15 pm Sunday 27 th September I received a phone call from someone calling on behalf of Ali King. I told them that I was on the do not call register and asked why they rang on my sabbath day. They were more interested in touting for votes than answering.

I have now decided that Ali King will be last on my ballot paper. Just so that voters in the Pumicestone electorate know about Ali King, she tried and failed in the 2017 election to win the seat of Maiwar in Brisbane’s western suburbs. In that election she only received 8,772 votes out of 32,647 possible votes. Where does her allegiance lie with the people of Maiwar or with us in Pumicestone?

We are seeking information as to who we contact regarding the rubbish that accumulates on our roads. We realise that there are several of our tri-level Government departments that are involved, but it’s a matter of figuring out who does what. We live on Bribie Island but we go off the island to Morayfield for various reasons, usually about once a week. When we leave Morayfield we generally enter the Bruce Highway from Buchanan’s Road and from there to the Bribie Island turnoff the amount of rubbish on the side of the road is unbelievable.

It is reasonably tidy from the turnoff to just past Pasturage Road but from there until you reach Ningi it looks like a rubbish dump. There are metres of plastic sheeting, cushions, and other rubbish (even for the last couple of weeks a sofa) and of course the usual fast food wrappers just callously dumped on the roadside. When they do mow it, sometimes the mowers go through it and chop up the rubbish and spread it even further. There are two council rubbish tips just off the Bribie Road, there are countless public rubbish tins in every recreation area in the district, this is Australia, not some third world country. We also notice that there is a plethora of fast food wrappers that regularly turn up on the island as well, we see them on Sunderland Drive, especially after the weekend. Please would someone advise us of which administrative body to advise regarding this rubbish. And.....Please......would people stop throwing their junk out the car window and secure your loads if on trailers or vehicle trays. Any clean up that is undertaken needs to be done on a weekly basis until people learn how to act like decent human beings.

Dear Editor Calling all Looney Ladies A year ago, when a council officer rang me about the buses parked dangerously near the Park and Ride, he said “the council was negotiating with the bus company to move the buses to a safer place”. The negotiation skills weren’t very good because the buses are still parked in the same spot, anyone coming out of Mitre 10 are not able to see traffic coming from the right, and the other one parked where there should be a pedestrian crossing. However regardless of older people using walkers and others walking with canes nothing has been done to make them safe.

I call on the new Bribie Island Bus Company owners (Caboolture Bus Lines) to please look at fixing this dangerous part of Bribie Island.

Even if you still drive coming out of the retirement village is quite a feat.

pieces of advice that my Grandfather gave me. Firstly, never make promises that you cannot keep. People will remember your broken promises............... And secondly, always tell the truth no matter how painful it becomes. Again, people will remember your lies......... Remember, lad, that it takes a long time to get a good reputation and a short time to get a bad reputation........... and by the time you realise where you are on this scale is too late to change.

And then there was my father who showed me the benefits of mathmatics and how to balance the books; both gentlemen who had high morals, strong work ethics and a commitment to a positive result in whatever field they were working on at that time. My Grandfather had his own building company and my father was an accountant for an International Company and whilst they were tough to work with it was noted that the churches were full on each of their funerals. That reflected the standing that they had in the community.

So, pondering the above question and reading my letter for a second time, (which I suggest you do as well,) I can now see why I shall not be meeting my local Labor candidate............

Dear Editor Queensland has more public servants per capita than any other state in our country. The Labor Government uses this as their mantra for delivering better services to Queenslanders.

With hundreds of thousands of public servants earning rather generous salaries, it is their job to serve the government and provide frank and fearless advice on how best to service my and other Queenslanders’ needs.

One of my needs is for a better Bribie Island Road. I am local, I pay my taxes, I travel this road every day and I deserve a better, safer road to travel on.

This raises some questions around the $20 million of Federal funding gifted in 2018 for the purpose of upgrading Bribie Island Road. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that one of two things has taken place here: 1. Either the thousands more public servants employed by the State Labor Government have failed to do their job by not delivering to the Federal Government a project proposal for the $20 million in a timely manner (again noting this funding was announced with no conditions back in July 2018) – or 2. There is some highly manipulative political motive at play by the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

Why is fixing unsafe roads (and Old Toorbul Point intersection would have to be right up there), when funding has been sitting ready and waiting for years not a priority for either the (new and improved!!!) public service or the State Labor Government?

So which one is it? It can only be one or the other as there is no other legitimate excuse. We either have an ineffective public service not delivering best results for Queenslanders (and we pay their wages) or we have a cunning, politically opportunistic State Government who held onto the Feds dollars until three months out from an election (and we pay their wages too!). Either way this is not about putting the safety of Queenslanders first in any reasonably minded person’s view. Perhaps it’s time to raise our sights Queensland!

Issue 56 2020 - We're here for you!

By Staff Writer Matt Owen Domestic violence and elder abuse isn’t only physical abuse, it can be emotional, controlling and/or financial. This is important. It isn’t only physical.

How many of us actually make a difference to people’s lives? That was the question I asked myself after interviewing Sonia Colvin.

I immediately thought of doctors and health workers, they make a difference. Police officers certainly do.

Paramedics, educators and firefighters do.

Making a Difference

But then my next question was, how many people really make a difference to people’s lives and don’t get paid?

I started to think of not-for-profits, soup kitchens, volunteers, Busy Fingers (and other similar op-shops), and of course, Bribie’s own Butterfly House who have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to those in need.

Thank yo u to our amazing volunteers and not-for-profit organisations. Our community is great in this area. And of course many people do it in an informal way as part of a friendship or as part of a family.

Sonia Colvin next to a marketing banner And once Hairdressers with Hearts is off the ground, how about all other frontline workers getting something similar. After that it can be time for all apprentices as part of their training?

A school programme for every student in Australia? A parenting course for new parents? If every Australian is aware of these issues the situation can only improve.

As a hairdresser, Sonia Colvin has helped nearly 200 victims of domestic violence and elder abuse.

All while working full-time in her own hairdressing salon!

What is Hairdressers with Hearts? It is a programme that equips the 67,000 hairdressers and barbers to identify potential cases of domestic violence and elder abuse and to provide appropriate resources for the relevant professional support services. It is important to note that the programme does not train hairdressers to be domestic violence professional workers or to provide professional advice. It is about early prevention and providing support. When you think about it, it is genius.

After all, there is something unique about a salon environment, people feel comfortable and they talk: and pretty much everyone needs a haircut right?

So if the 67,000 hairdressers and barbers each play a role and even if they can help 100 people each, that means that 6,700,000 Australians would get the help they desperately need.

Does this totally solve the problem?

Probably not, but it is going to change lives. It is going to make a difference to people’s lives.

Despite this, Hairdressers with Hearts has struggled to get funding and Sonia works from 4am everyday (before her salon opens) and attends countless meetings (at her cost) in her role with Hairdressers with Hearts.

Her team of volunteers have a similar level of commitment. How has such a worthy cause struggled to get funding? I have no idea, but I do know it that isn’t right.

Domestic violence and elder abuse is one of those issues that as a society we have not been able to get under control. It has actually got worse during COVID. More financial pressure means more fighting, more control and more stealing: all from loved ones which is the real sad part.

Not many things make a stomach churn like hearing of extreme domestic violence - which leads to one death per week in Australia. One death per week. Let that sink in. One life is lost per week due to domestic violence.

The issues of domestic violence and elder abuse are as important as any other in Australia. It needs to change and it shouldn’t take a generation to do so. It is 2020, not 1970. Previous approaches just haven’t worked.

Every Australian needs to be educated with early prevention the key and zero cultural acceptance. Punishments must be severe and swift. Too many of these cases have a history of reoccurring harassment like stalking.

Sonia, you have my vote for Australian of the Year. Our community is proud of you and your team at Hairdressers with Hearts. You are making a real difference; we have to get the rest of the country behind you.

Hundreds of signed hearts by many people in support of HwH spine. Deaths of young women at the hands of their current or former partners. Not good enough. No excuses.

This is not acceptable. It is a disgrace.

How in 2020, can this still be happening? How could it ever happen?

Queensland media legend, Kay McGrath, who is Co-Chair of The Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Prevention Council, mentioned in our interview what a complex issue domestic violence is and how it requires generational change. After this discussion with Kay it gave a real understanding of domestic abuse. It certainly is not a simple issue. The link between Hairdressers with Hearts and The DFV Prevention Council is that Sonia Colvin was recently inducted into their honour roll. A fantastic recognition for Sonia’s hard work.

After speaking with Kay it got me thinking at a higher level. What can be done? How about more power to the police? How about laws to support the victims and the police?

How about a Royal Commission into Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse?

How about more grassroots funding?

Advertising campaigns? More severe punishments? A Minister with a Portfolio of Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse? Private sponsorship? I’m sure this has all been brain-stormed before, yet the problem still exists.

Time to think outside the box just as

This issue needs all of these approaches and more, and in fact some of them are happening and will need to continue to do so.

Hairdressers with Hearts is an amazing initiative. For goodness sake, we need an organisation or the government to get behind this programme because it is early prevention, it is non-invasive and it is the right thing to do in this fight against domestic violence and elder abuse.

It is a travesty that Sonia does not have the support to focus full-time on Hairdressers with Hearts. As good as a Hairdresser she is we all know her time is much better in a role with Hairdressers with Hearts.

I cannot think of a more deserving cause for funding: think about the funding promises in the current State Election, the sports club grants, roadworks, the list goes on, and on, and on.

Beachmere residents look for police action

Calls for an increased Police presence in the area have been ongoing for several years, with a delegation some years ago by local residents to Police Minister, Mark Ryan, having little effect or impact. Past community initiatives such as regular Coffee with a Cop meet ups were not supported by the Police with attendance, as at NHW meetings, sporadic.

In the past Police advise that statistics show there is no “problems�. One response was, at the time and again currently, to encourage residents to report all incidents to ensure that accurate statistics were being collated.

Local resident Annette Lourigan has instigated a Beachmere Residents for Road Safety (BRRS) group which she says is a solution based group of community members.

Once again Beachmere residents are 131444 now advising that all non urgent Police matters and enquiries coming together to combat ongoing MUST be reported via the Qld Police hooning and major thefts in the local website. area.

With the recent collapse of the local Neighbourhood Watch, Beachmere has been left without any contact with Police and policing in the local area.

Beachmere residents also report that when Police do attend Beachmere they issue infringement notices for parking whilst speeding, hooning and vehicle thefts continue unabated.

Both Labor and Liberal parties have made announcements that they will boost funding for Police if elected in the October State Election.

Calls for CCTV coverage at the Beachmere Boat Ramp, to reduce the incidence of stolen vehicles and illegal dumping, have been ongoing for several years but no action has been taken. This is a lost opportunity for the recently defunct local Neighbourhood Watch and the funds distributed - to other Neighbourhood Watch

It would be hoped that increased funding should alleviate some of the problems of contacting the Police, with the much publicised Policelink

By Staff Writer Mozza The good ship Lady Brisbane visited our island for a day trip recently delivering a boatload of tourists to Bongaree to sight see and shop and lunch at the local businesses.

These full day cruises from Brisbane happen three times a year and retrace the iconic SS Koopa Trail to Bribie Island departing from Bretts Wharf Plaza, Hamilton at 9am returning around 4.45pm.

The Koopa was an Australian steamboat built in Scotland by Ramage & Ferguson Ltd of Leith, Scotland, in 1911 and based in Brisbane from December 1911. It was passenger ferry in Moreton Bay. It was requisitioned for World War II service as HMAS Koopa (pennant KP) from September 1942 to January 1947, and used as a depot ship at Toorbul, Queensland and as a mother ship with Fairmile motor launches in the Milne Bay area of New Guinea. She returned to the Bribie Island service in February 1947.

The Koopa was later taken off the Brisbane - Redcliffe - Bribie run and retired in 1960.

The Lady Brisbane is a ship operated

by Brisbane Cruises, which has been operating since 1987. It was originally built to operate out to the Great Barrier Reef, the Lady Brisbane was built in 1972 by Milkraft in Brisbane, and has been renovated.

On Saturday 26 November 2011, the Lady Brisbane accidentally grounded on the beach just north of the Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island.

No injuries were sustained, and her passengers were returned to Brisbane by another vessel. She remained stranded until the following day when another Spring Tide enabled her release.

The benefits to the island would be huge and support the Moreton Bay Regional Tourism Plan as well as ease congestion on the highway to Brisbane from daily commuters from the island to the Brisbane CBD. Moreton Bay Regional Council set aside $250,000 in June 2020 to determine how much tourism potential the region has to offer.

Sandy Gregory has lived in Sandstone Point for the last 10 years. Originally from Germany, she settled here, married her husband Steve, became an Aussie and set up their life here in the Bribie area.

Initially, she worked cleaning the local holiday rental properties, but seven years ago started a little business, supplying linen to the holiday rental units on Bribie. Sandy says, “as my business grew over the last few years, I upgraded to one normal-size and one industrial-sized washing machine, dryers and a German rotary ironing machine, so I could manage larger sizes & quantities of linen.

As the business grew and her reputation for immaculate work blossomed, she also branched out into washing and ironing private linen and making beds, when required. What she found from this, was that there is a large number of people in the Bribie area, who struggle with the work-load of stripping their beds, washing them, hanging them on the line, taking them back in again, often simply finding space on their clothes-line for large sheets, then folding them to take back inside and finally re-make their beds. This is easy, if you are fit and you have the space, but can also be quite a chore to many people.

Sandy provides a quality service for all, who can’t or “don’t want to” go to all this effort. After seven years of experience in this field, she has proven (without fail) she is reliable and efficient, whilst providing her service with a big smile

One could argue that if we build it they will come. Rather than the state government spending millions on tourism television advertising that is gone like a puff of smoke they would be better off putting the money towards underwriting this type of service for a few years until it’s sustainable.

We as a community need to decide what it is we want to serve the future of the island, perhaps this could be the topic of discussions of the Bribie Island Business Groups and Council going forward.

Fisheries regulation overhaul to support Queensland’s Aquaneo economic recovery Pool Store

A major fisheries regulation overhaul will cut red tape for the commercial fishing industry, protect export jobs and set Queensland on the path to more profitable and sustainable fisheries.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the regulations were an important measure to support the industry through the COVID-19 recovery, with provisions to protect the state’s export approvals under Federal Government sustainability requirements.

“Despite the easing of COVID-19 restrictions as we implement Queensland’s $8 billion plan for economic recovery, the commercial fishing industry continues to face significant economic hardship,” Mr Furner said.

“We are acting to support the industry’s recovery by reducing red tape and making changes to meet conditions of Commonwealth Government environmental and trade approvals.

•

“This will ensure exports continue for nearly a dozen of our key fisheries, which support nearly 1,400 fishing businesses and more than 4,000 regional jobs.

Other changes to protect and maintain export approvals will commence in September 2021.

at-sea processing in the Gulf of Carpentaria for certain species crab and lobster meat processing to allow business diversification increased incidental shark catch limits for commercial line fishers clarifying various definitions such as fish measurement requirements standardising trawl fishery closure times to better align with fishery operations increasing the number of crab pots allowed in blue swimmer crab fishery clarifying and standardising primary and tender boat requirements to remove unnecessary restrictions permitting fishing in both the coral and aquarium fisheries to support diversification removing distance requirements for tenders streamlining existing commercial catch reporting requirements.

“There are no changes for recreational or charter fishers in these regulations,” Mr Furner said.

Queensland Seafood Marketers Association President Marshall Betzel said overall strategic reform was something that industry needed to have a defined future.

“The QSMA is hopeful that regulation change and the reduction of red tape will play an important part in providing not just a sustainable supply of seafood products to the consumer, but also create a long-term vision for growth in the Queensland seafood industry,” Mr Betzel said.

North Queensland commercial fisher Nathan Rynn said retaining our WTO export approval was vital for exporting fish bladders, shark fins and fish roe, and keeping our small businesses profitable.

“All of these products are high value and exporting allows us to use as much of the fish as possible,” Mr Rynn said.

“This is a win/win for everyone and worth millions to the Queensland economy each year, as well as the jobs created.

“The commercial industry will see the removal of investment warnings on different fisheries and symbols and

this will allow investment in businesses with some security.

“Continuation of the working groups and reforms won’t be without teething problems, which industry will want to adjust and fix along the way.”

Mr Furner said he was writing to the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment seeking support to reinstate export approvals for the East Coast Inshore Fishery and to extend other export approvals while these reforms are implemented.

Commercial fisher Peter Jackson said industry welcomed the certainty that a decision on these fisheries reforms would bring for commercial fishers.

“It’s been more than a decade of discussion for the crab fishery and the changes provide a framework for a future generation of commercial fishers,” Mr Jackson said.

Mr Furner said completion of the reforms would enable investment warnings in place since 2011 to be removed and create a more positive investment environment for economic recovery, business resilience and diversification.

Associate Professor Ian Tibbetts, Chair of the Sustainable Fisheries Expert Panel - who reviewed the harvest strategies – said importantly the harvest strategies outlined pre-agreed rules for managing the harvest of all sectors and adjusting catch limits to ensure sustainable harvest over time.

“For the majority of the species in these fisheries, initial catch limits will be similar to the current level of catch being taken by commercial fishers and will therefore continue to support jobs in the industry,” Associate Professor Tibbetts said.

Mr Furner said fishers could now have their say on draft harvest strategies for some of our most popular species.

“Industry has been telling us Queensland needs more responsive decision-making while providing certainty about what would happen under different fishery performance conditions,” he said.

Feedback on the harvest strategies will close in late 2020.

Final harvest strategies and declaration of commercial catch limits are expected to be in place in early 2021, in time for the new fishing regulations that will come into effect on 1 September 2021.

Bribie Islanders & Surrounds are set to benefit as the Australian Government lays out its plan to bring Australia out of the recession.

Budget 2020 was created to create jobs and rebuild the Australian economy as we bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

By Staff Writer Matt Owen I first went to the Caboolture Historical Village about 30 years ago, as part of a school excursion. This is what 10,000 students do per year – visit the Caboolture Historical Village.

If these kids are like me, they will take something away from that visit and remember it for years to come.

My memory was of the small houses and wondering how families could live in something the size of what we associate as a garden shed.

In my recent visit I seemed to appreciate the significance of history more than I did as a 12 year old. I loved the streetscape of the barber, the butcher and the general store. Also there was something about the old service station, of course the old cars were cool but I think the old hospital is the thing I will remember the most from this visit. Yikes, those dentist tools are so scary! Also I wasn’t see any insulation in those old buildings so it must have got freezing cold.

This time I was fortunate enough to get some time with the President of the Caboolture Historical Society, Roger Dunstan, and his right-hand man, Site Curator, Geoff Bilbow who gave us a personal tour through the hospital, general store and the transport area.

There is so much to see at the Caboolture Historical Village including: • • •

70 buildings located across the 12 acres of land Over 100,000 historical items 40 of the above buildings have local links including the original Council Chambers, churches, the police station and of course, the train station!

There are several what I dscribe as mini-museums in the village including: The Maritime

Museum which features models of the First Fleet, as well as other buildings dedicated to the Police, Aviation, Army and more!

It is amazing that so many local families have donated items, items that can now be enjoyed for generations to come by those that visit the village.

Visiting the Caboolture Historical Village is a wonderful experience, an experience that takes you back in time. A wonderful job has been done for many years by the volunteers and those who have donated items and we should all support such a tremendous local attraction.

Get the kids or grandkids off tech for half a day and check it out, or if they are at school grab a friend or two and come and see how life used to be.

Member for Longman Terry said the Budget was a welcome and wellthought out plan that will help locals find jobs.

“The private sector will help lead Australia out of this recession and this Budget presents a clear roadmap to recovery,” he said.

Around 43,100 taxpayers in the Longman electorate will benefit from tax relief of up to $2,745 this year.

“This will allow families in the Bribie area to keep more of what they earn, allowing them to spend more on the things they need,” Mr Young said.

Around 23,064 age pensioners and 3,311 carers in Longman will receive a further $250 payment in December and a further $250 from March next year.

The Government is also supporting business through a range of initiatives, including a temporary tax incentive that will allow around 9,300 businesses in Longman to write off the full value of any eligible asset they purchase.

To help young people find jobs, The JobMaker Hiring Credit of up to $200 per week is available to employers who hire eligible employees aged 16-35.

“We are also funding 100,000 new apprenticeships through a new 50 per cent wage subsidy for all businesses that take on new apprentices from now until September 30 next year,” Mr Young said.

“And we will continue helping older people find work through the Restart program which provides up to $10,000 to encourage businesses to hire and retain mature age employees aged 50 and over.

Other measures to drive investment in the region include further funding for the Bruce Highway upgrade between Caboolture and Caloundra; and the New Settlement Rd overpass;

and the D’Aguilar Highway upgrade.

Moreton Bay Council will also receive more than $5 million to build shovel-ready local priorities, supporting local jobs and local business.

“These investments, together with the new Road Safety Program will support around 10,000 jobs over the life of the projects and I look forward to residents in this electorate benefiting from the local procurement they bring,” Mr Young said.

“This Budget will position Australia as a world leader as we come out of this pandemic.”

Before You Start!

Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises.

Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others.

That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements.

Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below can be done as a circuit combining exercises to rest one area of your body while exercising another. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

KNOW YOUR REASON AND FIND YOUR SOMETHING

“So WHY NOW? What made you contact me NOW?” This is just one of the questions I ask in our free one hour chats, and out of all of the questions I ask, this is actually THE question, this is what REALY MATTERS, the HONEST, DEEP DOWN reason why someone has come to see what I can do for THEM. By the time I ask this question I would have most likely already been told that they want to “Lose weight”, “Get Fit”, “Feel better”.

Most will also tell me that they have been reading these slightly weird ramblings of a crazed Personal Trainer for a while, sometimes for over a year, and finally decided they had to “do something”.

But why NOW? Why didn’t they phone last week?

Last month? Last year? What has suddenly changed?

And when I do get THAT answer, that’s when I hear about the stuff that most people bury down deep and try to ignore, and have been fighting to keep hidden for months, years, even decades.

This is when I’m told how they are miserable because they can’t walk with their partner due to sore knees and how they would love to be able to go for a beach walk without needing support to balance.

I hear about people who feel exhausted all the time but can’t sleep, or wake with no energy or reason to get out of bed.

I learn of trips not taken because they know they will not be able to enjoy the sights they have always wanted to see because of steps or hills.

There are the “sporty ones” who want to finally improve handicaps in golf that have been a sticking point for ages or being able to spend the whole day bowling without spending the next day feeling like they did three rounds with a steamroller.

I’m told about ever expanding waist lines and saggy girly bits squeezed into dresses that looked great last summer but have shrunk – which, by the way, is really caused by the calorie fairies who come in for the winter and sew your clothes smaller! Wicked little beasties aren’t they!

And yes, of course I’ve learnt of revenge goals to show ex partners what a mistake they made and how much better lives are now they have gone.

These are the dreams that people don’t want to admit to because, well… because although we all know that we could do something to fix all this stuff, actually doing it is a big step! We have to move out of our comfort zone and what if we

Sit and repeat all exercises 3 times if possible.

FLAMINGOS, BALANCE AND TOES

Stand with one hand resting lightly on top of a stable chair or the kitchen bench to help with your balance. Flamingo - Stand firmly on one leg and slowly lift your other foot behind you only to the height of your calf – slowly return to the ground and swap legs - Repeat 10 times each leg Arm/Leg raises - Stand firmly on one leg and raise the other leg out to the front while lifting the opposite arm as high as you comfortably can – slowly bring back to start and swap sides – Repeat 10 times each leg/arm Toeing The Line – slide each foot slowly to the front and place heel against your other foots toes. Try not to step – slide, keeping in as straight a line as possible. Continue for 10 slides each foot Repeat all three exercises 3 times if possible.

CLOCK REACH AND SIDE LEG RAISES Stand behind a stable chair or beside a kitchen bench Clock Reach - Use the chair for balance with one hand and lift one foot off the floor. Standing on one leg swing your arm backwards and forwards while keeping your body still 15 times Swap leg and arms and repeat 15 times Side Leg Raise - Balance with both hands on back of chair and lift one leg out to the side slowly. Make sure your body stays completely still and doesn’t “counterbalance” your leg.

Maybe there has been a change around you this year that has made you realise that you are wasting time wasting time!

It could be a sibling or close friend becoming ill, or retirement travel dreams that are not so easy to achieve when you can’t walk and sit comfortably. Or wouldn’t it be great to be able to tell that annoying bloke you have to listen to bragging on the 19th hole that you just knocked another 3 off YOUR handicap!

Whatever it has taken to reach NOW, now is the time for your “something”.

Are you worried you will fail?! If I concentrated only on failing I would have never competed in 5 bodybuilding competitions! Or won speech contests! Yet throughout my training for both, I was told by soooo many people that I might fail, I might not look good enough, I was too old, I might forget the words of a speech, I could look silly on stage!

Modernised Body Corporate regulations to commence in March 2021 The Palaszczuk Government has finalised a modernised set of body corporate regulations which will deliver important benefits for Queensland unit owners.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the regulations were the result of widespread industry consultation and follow a property law review undertaken by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

Bribie Island health bonanza - two hospitals could be built A brand new emergency care health clinic and day hospital will be built on Bribie Island following approval from Moreton Bay Regional Council last week.

Mayor Peter Flannery said Council had agreed to defer development charges for the private developer, so that construction could start sooner rather than later.

“This is a practical way for us to get tradies on the tools in Bribie to unlock ongoing employment opportunities at the medical centre across a range of fields from dentistry and radiography, through to reception, cleaning and even retail,” he said.

“The development application provides for specialist consultant rooms, office spaces and a 335sq m central plaza with food and drink outlets on the ground floor.

“It complements the Labor Government’s $265 million announcement yesterday that if re-elected they’ll build three satellite hospitals here in Moreton Bay Region - in Petrie, Caboolture and one dedicated specifically for Bribie Island.”

The Vaid Family Trust, comprising husband-wife duo Arti and Raahul from GP clinic Bribie Doctors, have been working closely with Council since 28 May 2019 to ensure the service and scale of the development would be a suitable fit for the island.

Dr Raahul Vaid said it would be built at Lot 8 Bongaree Avenue, close to the bus interchange for accessibility and behind the Bribie Island Shopping Centre for convenience.

Councillor Brooke Savige (Div 1) said it was important for island residents to be able to access health services as close to home as possible.

“It means locals won’t have to go all the way to Caboolture, they’ll be able

to receive health services in a more convenient setting close to home and family,” she said.

“The need for greater investment in health services and infrastructure on Bribie Island is absolutely clear.

“It’s reassuring to know our health system will continue to meet the growing demand for services and take pressure off nearby major hospitals.”

The application was subject to Code Assessment, so no formal public notification was required.

However Council received significant community support in the form of a petition (almost 499 signatories) which noted: “This is a long awaited requirement for the Bribie Island community, an Emergency Care Clinic and Day Hospital would benefit so many in the community”.

To assist stakeholders with the transition, the new regulations will take effect from 1 March 2021.

“The new regulations streamline and modernise body corporate procedures, reduce body corporate costs and enhance protections for unit owners,’ the Attorney-General said.

“These are important outcomes for unit owners and the regulations have been guided by a comprehensive review carried out by QUT. “We’ve worked closely with stakeholders on the regulations which we believe have strong support from industry and Queensland unit owners.”

The Ripening of the Mandarins By staff writer Harvey Fewings

Nota Bene *** These comments are not directed at the thousands of decent men and women who make up Australia’s Public Service at all levels of Government. These comments are the opinion of the writer formed from observations made and experienced with senior levels of public service and Ministerial responsibility.

Senior public servants, certainly those at Department Head/Secretary level used to pride themselves on their calm and objective advice to Government Ministers of the Crown.

When comparing their taxpayer salaries to those of similar responsibilities in the private sector; senior public servants were paid less but had one very attractive privilege going for them – they had tenure – permanent employment. Which meant that come rain, hail or snow, as long as they kept providing their calm, objective advice, their salaries kept flowing.

And that was a privilege worth having.

The general public trusted public servants. They were held in high regard as personal referees; they were men and women of substance, and they knew their stuff. They were professional and competent: fearing no one in the provision of advice they provided to elected Governments.

Perhaps the first indication we had, of an evolving trend, was the election of the Whitlam Labor Government.

Labor had been out of Commonwealth Government for many years; and with the arrival of the Whitlam Government, it was evident that they wanted

to change a stable, steady collection of Departmental Heads. Mainly senior men who were probably loyal to the outgoing conservative Government, simply because of its longevity in Government.

And, there is nothing wrong with that.

Whitlam wanted to make sweeping changes, and he was looking for a different approach to Government and its application through the public service.

But, in my opinion, this was the be-

happen overnight. The idea had legs in the minds of many elected politicians; they wanted “ Yes “ men and women who would comply with Ministerial directions and find ways to make these directions happen.

The next significant development along the way was the introduction of employment contracts for senior public servants. The contract system ended the idea of permanent tenure and If you had the right political connections, the ambition to be involved in matters of governance and some

ginning of the politicisation of senior levels of the Public Service. It did not

management skills, then you were a fair chance for a high-level contract.

The critical factor here was the right political connections. If you were not known and trusted with the proper track record, your chances of success were not good.

Both conservative and socialist governments in Australia now do this with senior public servants.

Socialist governments are more likely to follow this principle because they have a paranoid demand for loyalty – a suspicion of ‘ others’ who are not from either the union, sympathetic university mates or established ‘ mates ‘ from the industrial relations legal jungle.

Spread across our Nation, at all senior government levels of the public service we now have the ‘ mandarins ‘ on contract. We also have the latest evolution from that process – ‘ the ministerial advisor ‘ – who is taking more authority away from the contracted public servants and assuming responsibilities well outside the expected norm.

So what does all this mean?

Well, it means that decisions are made outside of Cabinet; authority is devolved from the Cabinet to employed and contracted staff.

Ministerial Westminster Responsibility is flicked aside because the principle of governing for all has been scrapped for the focus of ‘ remaining in power ‘.

How do we know this?

Examples are many. State Premiers in Australia now have ministerial staff advisors, press advisors, specialist advisors, economic advisors, strategic advisors numbering in the hundreds.

These are not public servants!

This trend is following the doctrine of a modern economist, who has been adopted by the left-wing ‘ luvvies ‘ as one of the new disciples of the economic creed of the ‘ modern monetary theory. ‘ Her name is Dr Marianna Mazzucato, a Professor of Economics at the London

When, matters go wrong and get out of hand, as it usually does with these new economic theories, Ministers can plead ‘ I know nothing ‘ when asked to accept responsibility for the mess – because they had no part in it. Well, not that they can remember anyway!

Other examples are the Chief Medical Officers exercising extraordinary powers under the Public Health Acts, and, according to the Queensland Premier, removing her from the decision-making process of who comes to Queensland.

Once again, a repeat of the ‘ mission ‘ principle – “don’t blame me; I don’t make the decisions.”

As a general rule, socialist governments quickly adopt the idea of the ‘ mandarin. ‘ although conservative governments are following strongly.

For the citizens of this Nation, it means that we vote for political parties which best reflect our view of the world and the way in which we want to live. Whichever political party wins enough seats in the Parliament will form the Government.

In a democracy, this Parliament expresses the will of the citizens and is ultimately responsible to them at the ballot box.

But. As the Mandarins ripen on the political vine their numbers and influence increase out of all proportion to political reality.

We don’t vote for Mandarins: we vote for members of Parliament, and we expect them to deliver good Government.

If they don’t, we can vote them out.

Mandarins, do not and can not deliver good Government.

They think they can, but they can’t.

To put it bluntly, they don’t have any skin in the game. They say they do, but they are not held responsible at the ballot box – all they have to lose is their job.

Politicians lose Government, and that is a much more significant burden.

I ask you to think about this when you next cast your vote.

Do you want to assist in the ‘ Ripening of the Mandarins ‘?

Or do you want to have a Parliament which is responsible to you?

The answer should be obvious.

New recreational fishing app ready to download A new software application for Queensland recreational fishers has been launched and is now available to download free.

“‘Qld Fishing 2.0’ is an improved version of the original ‘Qld Fishing’ app and aims to assist recreational fishers to better understand and comply with fishing rules and regulations,” Mr Furner said.

By Staff Writer Mozza Toorbul is a coastal town 34 kilometres from Bribie Island taking about half an hour to visit for a day or half day trip. It is a quaint fishing town that has seen some considerable homes built there of late. It has excellent council foreshore facilities and playgrounds and sandy narrow beaches on the water’s edge. In the 2016 census, Toorbul had a population of 930 people.

Toorbul is bounded on the east by Pumicestone Channel which separates mainland Queensland from Bribie Island. It is bounded to the north by Elimbah Creek and to the south by Ningi Creek, both which flow into the Pumicestone Channel.

There are a number of low flat islands immediately off the coast which are included within the locality including Parrot Island and Shag Island.

Pumicestone Road connects the entire locality running from the Bruce through to the town on the eastern coast. Bribie and surrounds residents can join Pumicestone Road from Old Toorbul Road off Bribie Island Road.

Toorbul, a quiet fishing village perfect for a day trip

The town contains a shorebird sanctuary which is an important habitat for up to 50000 birds. Many of these birds travel 25000 kms each year travelling from the Arctic, Siberia and Alaska via Japan and China to Australia and New Zealand. The intertidal zones adjacent to Toorbul are the richest feeding grounds in the Pumicestone Passage for these birds recuperating from their voyage.

Species include the Pied Oystercatcher, Godwit, Eastern Curlew, Plover, Tattler and Red Necked Stint.

The town takes its name from Toorbul Point, which is believed to be a Yuggera language word referring to a specific Aboriginal people associated with the Ninghi area. However, Toorbul Point is not within the present day boundaries of the locality of Toorbul but in Sandstone Point to the south-east.

In 1944 during World War II, RAAF 210 Radar Station was established at 1295 Pumicestone Road. It was a British-designed Advanced Chain Overseas (ACO) radar stations, one of four constructed in Queensland.

There is a boat ramp, shop and pub at Toorbul as well as a caravan park and petrol station. Donnybrook is 13 kms away for a change of scenery.

Take a picnic blanket and the kids for a fun and safe day on the water at Toorbul and enjoy a place not known by many but loved by those who do.

Toorbul Provisional School opened circa 1891. On 1 January 1909 it became Toorbul State School. It experienced some temporary closures most likely due to low student numbers and closed permanently circa 1935.

Contract wraps up early Christmas gift for Bruce Highway pinch point

2020 has been a year of surprises and change. One of the biggest changes this year has been the transition from face to face conversations to online interactions.

This is provided a number of challenges, perhaps the biggest being online learning and teaching. Such a change has placed families, teachers and students under stress and has resulted in various adaptations to learning.

Despite these changes and strange circumstances, children not only in Australia but around the world have taken to the change with enthusiasmeager to learn. Towards the end of November, the 20th of the month, Universal Children’s Day is celebrated.

The day was founded and has been continually supported by the United Nations since 1954. 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. This year, the importance of the day remains more prevalent than ever.

Around the world we have seen children make the best of a bad situation.

Learning from home, interacting with friends in new ways and some of the younger ones going for trips around a neighbourhood to spot teddy-bears in windows. Even from home, we have seen the resilience and impact of the younger generations.

As problems have arisen, we have seen children provide new and innovative solutions, giving insight and providing differing perspectives.

More importantly, even a pandemic has not stopped those advocating for what they believe in, with protesting moving online and people remaining informed and educated.

It is important to note though that whilst many children have been able to remain educated and active during the pandemic and quarantine, many have not.

This year the issues and problems faced by some children have become more evident than ever, with some children not being able to access school because they cannot access the internet. Whilst Universal Children’s Day is about recognising the positive influence of the younger generation it also aims to highlight the inequalities and terrible circumstances experienced by other children, not only across the world but also within our own countries.

Education is a luxury not everyone is able to access and even in the 21st century girls are forbidden from gaining such knowledge. Children still walk kilometres for food and water and unsafe circumstances place them in high risk situations. This day calls upon governments, non-profit organisations and everyday people like you and I to call for change and action.

It is through raising awareness about these issues that we are able to address and begin to actively implement solutions. Donations, monetary or otherwise, to charities are one small action that can be taken to help children within Australia and internationally.

Educating yourself and others about issues relating to children, such as an inability to access education, food and water, ensures that you are informed and, in a position, to begin to help create change. Many people say, ‘the world is your oyster’, but the responsibility falls upon us to help provide younger generations with tools and resources to go into the world and create positive change. So, this November, get the conversation started, see what you can do to help children around the globe.

Work will start before Christmas to add lanes in each direction on the Bruce Highway between Caboolture and Beerburrum.

“Anyone who drives the highway regularly between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast will have experienced the congestion between Beerburrum and Elimbah.

The $662.5 million jointly funded upgrade, which will deliver six lanes on the Bruce Highway from Caboolture Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163), will boost the Sunshine Coast’s economic recovery, with more than 660 jobs on offer when construction ramps up.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said Acciona Infrastructure Project Australia had been selected to complete the first contract of works for the upgrade, creating jobs at a critical time in Queensland’s recovery effort.

“This project is a key part of the Australian Government’s record $100 billion, 10-year infrastructure pipeline which will support our economy at a time when it is needed most,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“The Australian Government’s contribution of $530 million is all about creating jobs for Queenslanders, particularly those in the construction and manufacturing industries.”

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said the project was one of four major Bruce Highway upgrades that would be under simultaneous construction between Brisbane and Gympie.

“When work starts on this project, there will be four upgrades with a combined value of more than $2.8 billion transforming the highway between Brisbane and Gympie,

“The work starting soon will widen an 11-kilometre section of the highway from four lanes to six lanes and replace 10 bridges over five creek crossings with wider, higher bridges.”

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said the upgrade would be delivered as two contracts – one between Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Pumicestone Road and a second between Pumicestone Road and Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163).

“Both stages of the project are expected to be completed in early 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting,” Mr Young said.

“Work on the first stage will start later this year, while the second contract is expected to be awarded early next year and construction scheduled to start mid-2021 – all fantastic news for local jobs and drivers.”

The Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to Steve Irwin Way (Exit 163) project is jointly funded with the Australian Government committing $530 million and the Queensland Government committing $132.5 million.

Make this a priority Earlier in the year I asked for my community’s input into a Visitor Management Strategy for Bribie (Ocean) Beach. It’s no secret that Ocean Beach has become a premier 4WD destination for day-trippers and campers and with it being listed under various instruments of International significance for its conservation and protection of its delicate ecosystems and wildlife, wouldn’t you think such a strategy would be a must have, or at the very least a priority to get cracking on one?

Unfortunately, this hasn’t been the case for the current State Government.

The measure of any good community is how well we act as custodians for our environment.

Prior to me leaving my role as State Member, I want to make sure my community was aware of the work I’ve been doing to get this happening. In early 2018, I requested a formal meeting with the current Environment Minister, Leeann Enoch to discuss a range of local environmental issues including Ocean Beach and its use. I requested a Visitor Management Strategy be implemented and pointed out the increasing popularity of this glorious stretch of beach. I also reminded the Minister of the environmental significance of the area. I left that meeting with a firm commitment from the Minister that a visitor management strategy would be developed and that I would be consulted by her Department at the commencement of that process. After repeatedly asking the Minister for some action over the last two years, her once vow of allegiance was sadly just lip service - I’m still waiting!

It’s vital that we keep pushing for such an important visitor management strategy to be developed. It’s equally important for the feedback that my community has provided to be considered as part of this.

I thank everyone for taking the time to pen me your views and wishes on managing Ocean Beach. It is clear how committed our community is to ensuring our living beach is managed to the best of our human capability now and for future genera-

tions to come.

I want to assure all those who provided feedback that your contribution won’t be lost in the fray of an upcoming election.

I intend to write to the incoming Government and ask for their commitment to fulfill a broken promise by this State Labor Government and make a Visitor Management Strategy not only a reality, but a priority. Your contributions will accompany that letter.

Overwhelmingly the community expressed a clear desire to ensure the ecological and physical impact of 4WD vehicles on the beach is central to a strategy. A number of people want to divert beach access from North Street, whilst some want 4WD banned for good. Regular beach goers called for stricter policing of those few who disrespect the privilege of being able to drive on the beach and want to see better controls on movement on and off the beach. A few suggested drone monitoring (which I think is a great idea) to maximise eyes on movements during peak periods. Many other suggestions were made, all worthy of earnest consideration by the decision-makers.

Our beach deserves a consistent program of collective planning, decision-making and performance measurement. I will be urging the next Government to consider the environmental consequences should they not take visitor management seriously and fail to see this as an important issue for our Island community. Whilst I personally want everyone to enjoy a beach experience, I also want to see our beach healthy and clean, our wildlife protected from human hazards and joint stewardship of Ocean Beach being taken by the three levels of Government we elect. They each have an important role to play in this.

Community Safety Manager Aaron Smith said 77 electrical safety incidents involving vegetation management last financial year should serve as a powerful warning.

“We’ve seen potentially deadly incidents where tree branches and bamboo have contacted powerlines while being pruned, creating an electrical hazard and cutting power to the neighbourhood.

“Don’t put your life or someone else’s at risk – if there is overgrown vegetation near the service wire that runs to your home or on the footpath near overhead powerlines, always consult a professional tree trimmer or Energex.

“It’s always great to see Queenslanders doing their bit to get ready for storm season, but we don’t want to see anyone hurt in the process so please seek expert safety advice before you tackle any tasks that might be risky,” Aaron said.

Energex is ramping up its own vegetation management program in the countdown to summer.

Trimming trees in close proximity to poles and wires can help reduce the risk of network damage and power outages during a storm.

“We use vegetation management experts and we have strict safe work procedures for anyone working near our network.

“Similarly, we’re urging home gardeners not to take shortcuts where powerlines are involved – call a professional for your own safety,” Aaron said.

Please Note: This is a long contribution – it has been divided into two parts. This Part Two. These are views expressed by the Writer. They are published in the interest of fair comment and free speech.

(Continuing on from where an Australian Prime Minister said “sorry “in good faith with particular reference to Australia Day, January 26.)

Yet in some quarters it’s still “Invasion Day� and the “sorry� twisted in meaning entirely! Young Australians, coloured, white or whatever, are growing up not being taught the true historical facts. Yet, if the facts of the dreadful sufferings and hardships of the people who began our Nation were taught in schools, children and adults alike would learn the truth and take pride and have loyalty in our Aussie Nation, one would assume. We need to stop this division in our Nation, which has been allowed to happen by misguided people and political correctness which has gone wrong.

The National Flag under which

A FAIR GO FOR ALL young men fought should be more widely used, especially each morning on school parade. Also, our National Anthem as used to be at public functions. Why did some person decide this should change?

We should thank the early pioneers who struggled relentlessly to establish this Country; and thank God for the many young men and women who, without their supreme sacrifice in the Pacific Battle, would have resulted in a very different outcome for us all.

They gave us the Australia we have by which all have benefitted!

The “Aussie Fair Go For All� has resulted in each annual Federal budget for thousands of millions of taxpayer dollars being allocated to Aboriginal Australians in Aboriginal related matters such as health services, Land Councils, schools, Aboriginal Land Management Trusts - a comprehensive list which most other Aussies would not see as an issue whatsoever, as it provides help which might otherwise be denied. The benefits of the latest medicines, education and administration systems are available for all Australians, including Aboriginal people.

Yet we have certain ill-informed groups of Activists who “ape� the genuine American Negro segregation and abuse issues. They seem recklessly indifferent to the greater good in the Covid-19 world in which we live, demonstrating about the “Black Life Matters� group, spreading complete untruths about deaths in custody etc.

A disgrace and an embarrassment to decent Aboriginal

Australians!

Let’s stamp out this hatred for non-aboriginal people by a minority with “chips on their shoulders�! It’s ridiculous! We are all Aussies in the Best Country in the world. We don’t need divisions in our society which cause racism and violence to escalate.

Aboriginal Aussies can hold Australian passports, vote in elections, laws which apply to them apply to us all.

They have access to the same financial benefits which social security in Australia provides. How much more equal can that be? Time to play fair.

Stop blaming others for irresponsible behaviour, perhaps a need for Elders to teach young people a sense of values and to relate to their fellow Australians positively. Surely there has been enough financial aid to organise job skills, sporting clubs other activities in the community. Perhaps a good start to keep youth and young adults occupied!

Boredom breeds mischief. Similarly applies to the youth of all origins.

Summing Up – (A) Put a stop to ill-informed activists creating division in our Nation, causing racism and violence to escalate.

No permission granted for protests, especially at this Convid-19 time.

Lawbreakers blocking ambulances and necessary services should face the full extent of the law, and a fire hose would come in handy!

What is currently happening makes a complete mockery of our history and the previously mentioned brave

souls giving so much for us all.

(B) We need to start teaching school children true historical facts regarding the birth of our Aussie Nation. There are so many wonderful stories, including those of the First Nation people. Curriculum Education Review needed to address a lack of historical perspective and knowledge of our authentic culture.

We need to instil pride and loyalty once again in our Country. I remember when we were school children, no matter what colour or creed you were, [ multi cultural activity is nothing new in Australia ], we had to attend a parade each morning. We felt great pride in our Country when, with our hands placed on our hearts, the Australian Flag was raised. We all sang the first verse of the National Anthem.

There are now many different people in Australia, all wanting to make this Country their home. Our pioneers, who gave blood sweat and tears to make this Nation what it is today.

What I have written is based on fact and not emotion. If the issue is to be dealt with fairly and adequately, then we need respectful conversations based on facts.

This the best Country in the world – let us all work veery hard to keep it that way.

We are in the full impact phase ofpreparing the 2020 financials and tax returns for businesses. I am amazed that the GST claimed on sales or expenses is still being mis-calculated.

The rule of thumb is that the net figure (without and GST0 is the same as the GST component with 1 decimal point moved to the left.

When calculating your invoice to clients, work out the invoice amount and then (if registered) add 10% to that and you have your full invoice total including the GST. This is how ther ATO request your invoices. If you wish, you can make a note of the GST component for your clients but quite separate an area from the invoice total.

Claiming the GST component in your expenses (if registered) can be a little more calculation. Remember to check the invoice to determine that GST was charged. If it hasn’t been charged then you cannot claim the GST component that isn’t there. Some expenses have a partial GST component of the expense in the likes of insurance and MV registration and you must be aware.

The paid invoice is absolutely vital to get the amount right. And take note that Merchant fees have a GST component.

Many clients are missing this.

The maths calculation is as follows: If you have 100% of the net expense and 10% GST is added, ten you have a bill of 110%. To get the GST component,

divide by 11. To get the net claimable expense divide by 1.1.

Don’t divide by 10 or take 1/10 or any other math calculation other than the above. The 10% is to add to your sales, the 1/11 is for the deductable tax expense and the 1/1.1 is the GST component.

Remember this method and you won’t go wrong. Write it in the front of your paid accounts folder.

Bribie Island Satellite Hospital - Get The Facts You all know I’m a local local. Well here’s my thoughts about the new hospital announcement.

The project will also create 101 local jobs during construction, which is good news for tradies.

Bribie locals have been fighting for better healthcare for years. That’s why Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s announcement of a new $35 million satellite hospital on Bribie Island is great news for our community!

If re-elected, the government has said it expects construction to be complete by 2022-23.

This project is an election commitment - it will only go ahead if Labor is re-elected on October 31st.

What is a satellite hospital?

It’s a public mini-hospital providing outpatient health services. Bribie’s Satellite Hospital will be tailored to our community but could include Urgent Care, renal dialysis, chemo, physio, mental health, child health services and more.

What does it mean for locals?

This new hospital means residents won’t need to leave the Island for the majority of their healthcare.

As a public hospital, all services will be free of charge.

When will it be built?

What about other projects?

This is a public hospital - other proposals like the one by the local GPs can still go ahead. More healthcare services are always better!

Furthermore, with over 36%[3] of Queensland’s population renting their home (approximately 1.2 million), 90% of that housing is provided by private owners of which 80.6% are managed by real estate practitioners. And, for the period 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2020, 86,028 property sales[4] were facilitated by real estate practitioners.

Stony Creek Great for Rockpool Swimming and 4WDing

engage four wheels and travel Branch Creed Road which requires high clearance under the vehicle and is accessible only in dry conditions.

Driving past Caboolture towards Wamuran and Daguilar on to Woodford is the hidden valley called Stony Creek in the Bellthorpe National Park.

Stony Creek Road is exactly 6 kilometres past Woodford on the right and a further right turn after local dairy farms leads to the Stony Creek Day Area.

Travel several kilometres past forest and ridges until you reach the ford at Branch Creek then turn back unless you are a very serious 4WD enthusiast with recovery gear on board to attempt the summit past that point.

A lunch stop at Woodford is worth trying on the way home as the town has prospered from the popularity of the annual folk festival. An information centre about all the other local trials and attractions can also be found in town next to pubs, restaurants, eateries and coffee shops.

Stony Creek flows out of Belthorpe Forest Reserve at the southern end of the Conondale Ranges, then feeds into Somerset Dam via the Stanley River. Vine forests shade this section of Stony Creek and open eucalypt forests grow on the more exposed ridges around the swimming hole at Branch Creek.

Woodford was a stop on the nowclosed Kilcoy railway line for timber and dairy products. The line reached Woodford in 1909 and connected the town to the small regional centre of Caboolture. Most of the railway infrastructure was removed after the line closed in the mid-1960s, and much of the land has been sold. There is a small rail museum in the town which operates a steam train on the first and third Sunday of each month.

Belthorpe’s forests are beautiful and forest tracks can be used for walking but be well prepared by planning your walk and letting the Ranger know where you are going as mobile phones do not work in this area.

The forests were selectively logged for over a hundred years but this has now ceased and they are managed for conservation and recreation. Timbers removed from the area included flooded gums, tallowwoods and grey gums used to build furniture, houses, wharves and rail lines.

This trip is 45 minutes from Bribie and surrounds and is sure to become a favourite after your first visit.

Pandemic Politics = The Sludge still sloshes about…

It is a rare moment to hear an elected State Premier speak the words…” I don’t make these decisions! “ To her shame, Premier Palachuzk uttered these words in her defence of the morally bankrupt decision to deny a young woman the right to attend her Father’s funeral and grieve with her Mother and her Sister.

You all know the story – the media has worked it extraordinarily hard.

As they should.

The damning aspect of these words is that they open the door to the mindset of the Labour Party to Government.

Government is not what the labour party does – No Sir! They seek and will do anything to maintain political power. Political power provides them with the ability to satisfy favours, look after mates, award contracts and put in place the agendas of minor parties that support them at the ballot box – i.e. the greens!

Now that is not governing – that is just enjoying being the Government!

To a certain extent, that is what all political parties do; so there is nothing especially surprising about any of that. But we know that the labour party have an attitude of ‘ whatever it takes ‘ – one of their long term party identities is well known for speaking those works.

So, if the Premier does not make “ these decisions “, who does?

Trained monkeys know that Premiers cannot and should not get involved in the daily minutiae of the operations of Government.

But, we are not talking about that.

We are talking about this Premier locking up the state borders on the pretext of taking care of all of us. This is the stereotypical socialist garbage that ‘ we know better than you what is good for you.’

And, if we follow the principle of ‘ whatever it takes ‘…labour polling has told them this is a good idea – so, lock up the borders, but leave a few little

The Queensland State General Election… holes for ‘ mates’ to sneak through.

We have heard the extra-ordinary statement by the Premier that if she loses the forthcoming State election in Queensland because she has locked up the borders to keep us safe –well that is just a bit of political fluff bowing about the place.

This statement is just a piece of verbal morris dancing. Polling for both parties tells her that she is in trouble. Many Queenslanders have had a gutful of Labour and the unions running their pet projects in our schools, engaging in green lawfare thus preventing employment in mining, splashing taxpayers money about with no thought for tomorrow. And maybe, just maybe, the Queensland electorate has seen through the laser light show and will decide that it is time to bring some commonsense to the State.

Cranky Lizard acknowledges that that is a big call…

If that is the case, the Premier can claim, with hand on heart – “ I lost this for Queensland.” A genuinely moving and splendid sacrifice.

The problem is, she can’t change now, even if she wanted to and she probably does; she is so deep into this border closure misery that to change now, just because of bad polling, that would highlight the hypocrisy of the whole thing.

And.

It is hypocritical.

Money will get you in. The Chief Health Officer has said this.

What does that mean?

Cranky Lizard is not suggesting that anyone has been paid slush money to enter Queensland on the sly; it is an unclear proposition forcing observers to make assumptions where assumptions should not be required.

Cranky Lizard has assumed that the meaning is to be found in one of the great loves of the Labor Party – an opiate for the masses in the form

of large and spectacular sporting events.

Let them focus on the ‘ footy ‘ and take their minds off us!

But some basic questions still remain.

What we don’t know is how much money does it take and who decides how much is enough?

Cranky Lizard is not suggesting that there is any criminal, corrupt or underhanded behaviour occurring here – just a question – who qualifies?

Another question- how much does it take?

It seems as if there will never be a clear answer to that; no senior Government representative is going to provide those details.

The point of this conversation is that the Chief Health Officer of Queensland has indicated that ‘ money ‘ or ‘ economic benefits to Queensland ‘ will provide entry permits to Queensland.

Why her?

She was not appointed to be an economic engine room for Queensland… could it be that she was just throwing some smoke and mirrors about to take the heat of her boss?

That is probably the answer to the questions.

So. Now we come to the virus and the continuing border closures.

Commonsense will reveal that this virus can not, does not, move about the place infecting people on an ad hoc basis.

It can’t do that. It is a virus, not a mobile creature.

Therefore it can only move about and cause infection if it moves with people. The virus can live on inanimate surfaces for short periods of time, which is why at various social places we wipe equipment and surfaces with sanitizers. For the most part, infected humans are it’s only means of transport. Certainly, uncontrolled sneezing in crowds will infect others

rapidly, but we know that and social distancing is the key to that problem.

The wind can’t blow it very far. It does not float about on the tide. All sensible evidence so far points to the fact that the virus is transmitted from human to human.

Humans, acting now, with the knowledge we have gained, should be able to conduct themselves in such a fashion that this virus is not able to jump from person to person.

Cranky Lizard acknowledges that only Governments have the authority and the resources to attack a viral pandemic and Governments have done that; mostly successfully, apart from the Victorian Labor Government.

And, it is for all these reasons that Cranky Lizard reckons that it is undignified and desperate political posturing to lay public claim to ‘ saving ‘ people from the virus by being “ tough ”.

Being Tough in Politics…

So, we now have an ethereal announcement by the Premier, that, if Labor are re-elected, they will build one of many satellite hospitals promised across Queensland on Bribie Island….they don’t say where they will build it, how much it will cost or when it will be finished…roughly 2022-2023 ??

Huh? What bloody nonsense?

Cranky Lizard reckons this is just more desperation politics.

It is the absolute arrogance of Labor to treat the citizens of Bribie Island as they are all mushrooms! No budget, no plan, no location, just empty words.

And what about the local initiative by local medical interests to build a satellite hospital? This has already been approved by the local council.

Will the Labor Party’s weird plan be in competition to the local enterprise?

Cranky Lizard asks the Labor Party that – Are

you in competition with local enterprise??

A last word…no answer has ever been given to Cranky Lizard about the Labor Party claim regarding nuclear processing plants on Bribie Island.

None. The Labor Party made the claim, when they were called out to prove their claim, they did not do so.

Brazilian pepper tree Beachfront erosion threatens natural battle leads to local biodiversity business opportunity Living on the beachfront can be stressful when high tides and onshore winds cause beach erosion and loss of property frontage.

Recent footage of houses tumbling into the sea on the Central Coast of New South Wales were harrowing pictures for anyone and especially those living on the beachfront.

Beachmere home owners have recently been involved in disputes with Moreton Bay Regional Council when they built rock walls, on their own properties, to mitigate erosion and

It is also believed that it changes the microbioeme – the micro organisms that live underground – and is considered a key factor in the poor recovery or limited success of planting native vegetation for recovery after BPT incursion has been removed.

A plant listed in the worldwide database “100 of the World’s Worst Invasive Alien Species� is growing rampant in the local area.

The Brazilian Pepper Tree. or broadleafed pepper tree (BPT), is well known throughout the world as a plant that destroys natural plant habitat, transmits citrus disease and mango mould and is a haven for mosquitos, insects and bugs.

The tree has been identified in large stands in the Beachmere area extending from the Caboolture River estuary and throughout the mangroves down to the beachside area as well as north to the Toorbul foreshore including Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage.

The connecting roads and waterways act as corridors for the dispersal of seeds and plants with riparian systems (banks of rivers or wetlands adjacent to rivers and streams) particularly vulnerable to BPT incursion.

Beachmere resident Eileen, who recently returned from Florida, has been leading the campaign to increase awareness of this plant and has contacted Moreton Bay Regional Council and is in contact with the State Premier who has referred the matter to the Minister for Agricultural Industry, Development and Fisheries. “BPT is able to adapt to different climates and soils which is a significant factor in its ability to take over large

areas of land,� Eileen said. “The Council have taken action and has removed an extensive stand of the trees at the Rogers Street Sports Complex in Beachmere.� “An awareness campaign is the first step in telling landowners, farmers and residents how destructive these plants are. “The State Government, and Moreton Bay Regional Council, need to start action immediately to start removing these plants before they completely take over our natural environment, spreading plant diseases and aid transmission of human disease by giving mosquitos a haven to flourish,�

Eileen said.

The Brazilian Pepper Tree (schinus terebinthiolius) is native to Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil and is a restricted, invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014. The species was introduced to Florida in mid-1800 for use as an ornamental plant and they have spent millions of dollars in eradication campaigns in recent years.

This species is an aggressive woody weed growing into a large, spreading tree. It has dark green leaves, small, whitish flowers and red, bunched, glossy, round fruits. It displaces native vegetation and rapidly invades disturbed sites; it crowds out native plants and destroys the habitat for animals and birds that depend on native plants. (Qld Gov’t)

Recently Dave developed an interest in foreshore erosion and has been trialling Vetiver grass, which is in the same family as Lemongrass, at the front of several properties on the Beachmere foreshore.

By Staff Writer Mozza The Department of Agriculture Fisheries has placed a number of fish attracting devices near Bribie Island waters to improve recreational fishing in the region luring boaties to the district and the island boat ramps and waterways which provide safe access to the devices.

The fish aggregating devices (FADs) deployed off Queensland consist of an 800mm cone-shaped special marker buoy, a 2nautical mile range marine lantern, acoustic receiver and GPS tracker. The FADs are anchored to the seafloor with heavy anchors and chains.

FADs provide structure in an open ocean environment. Fish are attracted to FADs for various reasons, including to feed on prey species or as reference points for schooling. Most fish attracted to the Queensland FADs are seasonal pelagic fish, which travel in the warm water delivered by the East Australian Current.

The FADs work most effectively when the sea temperature exceeds 20°C. Various FADs were assessed to find the best design for the intended species and to withstand the particularly harsh sea conditions experienced off the Queensland coast.

Drift fishing and trolling are the most effective techniques for fishing around FADs. Remember, FADs are for the benefit and enjoyment of all fishing sectors, so make sure you follow the code of conduct: •

RESPECT other FAD users at all times.

•

Be courteous to fishers who are already using the FAD.

•

FAD users should take turns fishing the FAD and accommodate new arrivals.

•

Spearfishers should be aware of other FAD users and should not enter the water if other boats are around the FAD. Likewise, anglers should wait until spearfishers have completed their drift past the FAD before deploying lines (spearfishers usually only spend a short time around FADs).

•

Spearfishers should always tow a float displaying the ‘Divers Flag A’.

•

A safety boat, with the operator acting as a lookout, should accompany spearfishers at all times.

•

All fishers should keep boats, lines and lures a safe distance from the FAD, spearfishers and other boats at all times.

•

Do not tie your boat up to the FADs. This may damage the mooring line of the FAD, causing the device to break free and become lost (fines of up to $5,338 apply).

•

Limit your catch – don’t catch your limit and only take what you need.

•

Boating safety

Some FADs are situated long distances from shore, so please make sure your boat is suitable for offshore fishing and you have all the correct safety equipment required by law. Also, make sure conditions are suitable for boating before heading offshore.

FADs are not designed as mooring devices – NO MOORING is allowed.

Fines of up to $5,338 apply.

FADs work most effectively when they are left in place for long periods of time. Tying your boat to a FAD can result in the anchors dragging or the FAD breaking free and becoming lost.

Every time a FAD is lost, a productive fishing location is also lost.

OCTOBER Fishing Report Fishing this month has been up and down, as usual for this time of year

Fishing this month has been up and down, as usual for this time of year.

Still making our way towards summer, the weather has been warming up, with daily temperatures hovering in the mid-twenties. This time of the year, the weather is very changeable, and each time the weather turns, the fishing spikes or plummets in response.

All the talk is about La Nina coming, but it has sure been a dry start – not even 15mm in total since our last fishing report in September. Certainly not enough to give the creeks a flush.

Alan and Jan, from Everton Park Fishing Club, must have been very happy with their haul – 4 big bream, from the mouth of Ningi Creek. Jimmy put up with the choppy water and sat over near Pacific Harbour, which was the perfect spot for snapper – he caught two of them, both of them over 45cm. Around the same time, Richard landed a whopping 3.2kg snapper, near Kakadu Beach; and “lost a bigger one�!

These light afternoon breezes from the E/NE have, however, made for very pleasant fishing, especially from the shore on the Bribie side of the Passage. White Patch is nicely protected from north/easterlies, for shore-based fishing; and anchoring your boat in towards Wright’s Creek has also been a sheltered option.

The biggest wind of the past month blew up the day before the biggest rainfall of the month, and that combination created a real bonanza for fishing in the Passage. Sam and young Miya hung around Turner’s Camp, not wanting to stray too far in the heavy wind; and caught a lovely bream. Sam says squid was the best bait all day, which was the same for Neville, who used it to hook his flathead. Squid is handy for gusty weather anyway; because it holds so well.

Don, who took out a Fishability Qld crew for a windy day’s fishing, scored a great snapper – 48cm, from the hole at the top end of White Patch, using a favoured Fishability bait – marinated chicken!

White Patch – Banksia Beach area offered plenty of quality fish over the windy weekend, including grassy sweetlip, bream, moses perch and some impressive venus tuskfish. Drifting past the oyster regeneration project, which sits just off Kakadu Beach and is signposted, is a definite must for these species – just remember not to anchor near the project-sign or pull up at the little beach.

Another cracker bout of fishing started when the wind decided to swing around to the west – just for the day.

Nick got his 57cm flathead just south of the bridge, on the same day, using a Zman minnow lure, on the turn of the tide. There hasn’t been much rain, but the wind has stirred up the waters enough to reduce clarity, and so flicking a lure around works well.

Paddle-tail lures have been especially popular with the flathead, (and the fishers!).

As the waters of Pumicestone Passage warm up towards summer, there’ll be opportunities for fishing estuary cod and mangrove jacks, as well as some good flathead, in the creeks and around the mangroves and oyster leases. The Pumicestone Passage is currently host to massive schools of baitfish, so keep a good lookout for movement on the water and you can cast in among them, to score a larger predator fish. It often works well at this time of year, although Gavin was at it all afternoon recently, and got nowhere!

Lastly, for a couple of years now, there has been talk about greater stringency in boat licensing - “in the future�. Well, the future has come.

October 1st marked a big change in MSQ requirements for boat licensing.

There are now much higher standards of competency and all Boatsafe trainers are expected to insist on real, demonstrated ability to handle a boat, before they pass any trainee. A fair bit more work for the trainer and as a result, the cost of boat licence courses has also risen – but still worthwhile, if you want to buy yourself and your family a high-powered boat, and enjoy a safe day on the water.

5 Tips for Fishing with Kids

Kevin Van Dam became bass fishing’s first $2 million man in 2006. But the moments he enjoys the most are those spent with his 10-year-old twin boys, Jackson and Nicholas. That’s what he was doing when we caught up with him on a rare tournament-free Saturday morning. Within two minutes of our arrival, Jackson had a fish on.

For Kevin, it was no less exciting than catching another lunker during the Bassmaster Classic. Here are his five top tips for keeping kids tuned into fishing.

1. Start with equipment that fits the child’s size A fishing rod should be no bigger than six inches longer than a child’s height.

Push-button reels are entry-level models and perfect for kids.

2. Go to a small pond instead of using a boat That way the kids can run around if they get bored.

3. Coach as much as possible, but physically help them as little as possible They need to do it on their own because the excitement is in the struggle. Fighting a fish of any size turns into a huge event for kids.

4. Even if it’s hot, pack a pair of pants and a sweatshirt or long-sleeve shirt It’s cooler by the water, and if the bugs start biting, kids can cover up.

5. Start kids with live bait instead of lures Worms are perfect. They catch fish well and are fun to play with. After they get the hang of it and are ready for lures, use lures with exposed hooks like crank baits and spinner baits. They’re easier to use, and they catch numbers.
