Hello Readers and Welcome to issue 54.

A huge happy father’s day to all dads in Queensland and Australia. Most of the Team at the LOCAL News are dads, so from me to you, have a fantastic day Matt, Mozza, Harvs, Damian and Rog!!!

This issue brings some great LOCAL articles from our staff writers Matt Owen who has done a lot of research on the Forts on Bribie Island beach. The history is incredible, and we should be preserving them, Matt has given some suggestions on how to pay for preservation of our local history icons and also bring some interest from tourists.

Mozza has touched base with Bribie Island Buses and he will continue to follow up on the possible sale of Bribie Island Buses and he talks about and how worried we should be about Covid 19.

Of course, Cranky Lizard has a great article on the comeback of our economy.

The bitterness shown toward the hard working creator, by this neighbour, is something to behold & goes far beyond what you would expect in this day & age.

The creator’s private display gives so much pleasure to those who take the time to wander through the garden and reminisce about years gone by ... marveling at how rustic tools and imagination can be converted into something so intriguing. So wonderful that one person inspires so many, giving enjoyment to the disabled in our community also ... they view from their vehicles due to their limited mobility.

Please consider that there are always two sides to every story - take the time to see for yourself before buying into this one-sided view!

Recent global events reinforce that as a society, far to often, we become victims of the noisey minority - not the silent majority!

Fort Bribie. 75 years later.

What can we do next?

This article was written on the 75th anniversary of the end of WW2. Thank you to all that serve and have served our country.

Fort Bribie is Bribie Island’s WW2 history and something we should be proud of. Unfortunately the condition of the site does not demonstrate a sense of pride. The Visit Bribie Island website describes the site as ‘dilapidated’ which is a true reflection of it’s current condition.

3 key points about Fort Bribie:

1. Fort Bribie is located on the northern end of Bribie Island on Woorim Beach and was (is) a variety of structures including gun placements, searchlight posts, mine control huts, a plotting room, signals operation room, mess hall, toilets, post office, first-aid room and other associated areas for around 150 soldiers at the time.

2. Constructed in 1939: with the bridge still 23 years away, this was a major achievement.

3. The purpose of Fort Bribie was to protect Australia from Japanese invasion.

I recently inspected Bribie Island’s part of WW2 history, Fort Bribie. I was fortunate enough to get the tour from G’day Adventure Tours owner, Jason Brown, who explained the role of Bribie Island and the fortification structures in the War. Thank you Jason - you are a fine ambassador for Bribie Island and our history.

Historian, John Groves, and Co-Author of ‘The Northern End of Bribie Island during WW2 and the Underground Hospital’, (available at the Bribie Island Seaside Museum) tells the story of Fort Bribie with his account based on actual information from soldiers who served at the site. Thank you to John for your time and your thousands of hours of research into this topic. You a wealth of knowledge and your book is a must read for those interested in this topic.

Key points from my discussion with John included the ‘fake’ forts made of cardboard to put off the enemy, the ‘bold and buggered’ army, the real purpose of the ‘hospital’ and the role of women at Fort Bribie. And you can’t have this discussion without mentioning the sinking of the Centaur. These are some amazing stories and a big part of the reason we need to do something.

As I write this article why do I have an empty feeling in my stomach? Because what is happening just isn’t right. These structures and the site in general are a vital part of Australia’s modern history and should form an important part of our local tourism, it is part of our local identity.

The forts have been left to decay and erode… and who in the world would vandalise a location with this historical significance?

What can we do to keep our history alive and give Fort Bribie the recognition it deserves?

Basically the position of the State Government Minister is that the structures were built for a temporary purpose (WW2), were made of concrete with steel reinforcing and as it is a coastal location it is prone to erosion and so forth. You know where this is going, don’t

4. During my research for this article I visited our beautiful library (with further extensions underway) and the museum as mentioned previously. These are fantastic amenities, but it made me think.

Why in the world is our Tourist Information Centre so bad and when I say that I mean the structure?

It is like a granny flat hidden in a car park next to a toilet. A new information centre must be on the agenda, and quickly. It appears as though we don’t take tourism seriously with this structure, and that is if people can find it. This is not good enough for one of Queensland’s premiere tourist destinations. So how about a new Tourist Information Centre that is designed like one of the Forts? This would work, right? And don’t tell me that information centres are not important anymore and that online is all that matters. I have a lot of thoughts on local tourism but that is another article for another day.

Did you see the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s recent announcement of $11M of new projects? Including a $4.7m BMX precinct at Brendale, maybe they could have cut the BMX precinct back to $3.5M and put $1.2M toward restoring such a vital part of our history? Or how about the $30M on traffic lights and a stretch of overtaking lanes and the list goes on and on. I can’t believe I will have to drive through 10 sets of lights to get to the Caboolture Showgrounds!

I wonder if $1.2M would cover a replica WW2 fort and associated works or a new information centre, or both? Isn’t this an investment that would be returned with an increase in tourism? Doesn’t this give our local tourism a point of difference?

Would anybody disagree with this? If our local community can’t get the support from our elected Governments to fund such an important project maybe we need to look at other options to generate revenue for such a project to promote local tourism and preserve our history.

There are many options on how to do this by developing our industry.

Every time that you read about Government or Council project funding, ask yourself if that project deserves to be funded more than the WW2 site and/or a new information centre on Bribie Island.

Also does it have the upside of increasing local tourism and providing a return on investment: and of course, boosting local employment and very importantly supporting our tourism operators. But it is more than that – it is simply the right thing to do.

Bribie is no longer a sleepy village so we should stop acting like one. Once we give Fort Bribie the recognition it deserves it might be time to look at our long-term approach to tourism, our history and the development of Bribie Island.

September 6th is the day dedicated to the dads. It is the day we acknowledge all the hard-working fathers around Australia. From the biological to adoptive dads, foster to step fathersevery dad gets their well-deserved sleep in on that special Sunday.

Much like the rest of 2020, this year Father’s Day may look a little different with social distancing and safety taking the number one spot on the priority list, dad a close second. However, despite these safety precautions, plenty of fun can still be had. Just one idea, rent a boat from one of local boat hire companies and support their business and enjoy a family day out on the passage.

Earlier this month the Dale Marsh mural at the entry to Bribie Island was given a much-needed facelift.

The work conducted by the Moreton Bay Regional Council included replacing the signage structure and the reprint of a new skin. In total the project cost was just under $130,000.

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said the mural will now be on a regular maintenance programme and that there is potential to review the image.

Picnics along the foreshore are bound to be popular, or simply a day on the beach. Whilst all dads get a shoutout for their hard work, this year it is especially important to recognise all the dads with jobs in healthcare and various other essential workers for their continued efforts to ensure the safety of our community.

Our year has been all about getting creative through COVID 19, so for those of you who have dads out of state, or vice-a-versa dads if you have children living away from home and cannot see them, it is time to get those thinking hats on.

Facetime party? Zoom dinner? No matter the distance it is more important than ever to tell our dads (and all our loved ones) how much they mean to us.

For many people, this year has not brought with it many reasons to celebrate, however this day gives us a chance to give 2020 a more positive outlook. It is a chance to say thanks, not only to dads but grandfathers as well.

If this pandemic has taught us anything it is that we must celebrate the small things, take positives out of what we have and cherish the support of family.

Sometimes the best gifts we can give are the simplest. Think breakfast in bed, making dinner maybe even some afternoon baking.

Currently, in Queensland we are lucky enough to still remain out of lockdown, and Father’s Day is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of those outdoor activities. Explore the island or maybe even our local surrounds. We may be in different states, or unable to see those who we would usually spend the day with, but we still have the opportunity to support local businesses and of course our dads. On the 6th of September, take a moment out of the craziness that is 2020 to say thank you to your dad. Whatever your plans may be for this upcoming Father’s Day make sure to make the most of it. To the Father’s, we wish you a lovely day, filled with family and love.

Carolyn’ s Tax Tips

Had a chat the other day with a tradie about his business recording and bookkeeping. Told him I advertised with regular tips and info that he might be interested in. He told me he was too busy to read anything between working and family. We discussed an option of buying a small programme that he could use on his computer and on his mobile. I am still waiting for him to get back to me and if it isn’t soon, I will be following him up.

With no budget for Queeensland this year can only mean there is no plan either from the Palaszczuk Government to get us out of recession.

August horrendous unemployment figures, which showed Queensland had the worst unemployment rate in the nation, simply can’t be ignored.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has called on Annastacia Palaszczuk to stop the excuses and release a full State Budget.

“There are now more than 234,000 reasons why Annastacia Palaszczuk needs to deliver a full State Budget next month,” Ms Frecklington said.

“August job numbers are symptomatic of the weak economic leadership we’ve seen from the Palaszczuk Labor State Government.

“These aren’t just numbers in a spreadsheet, they are real Queenslanders who are looking for a job and are scared about their future.

“Queenslanders want a plan to stimulate the economy and provide a decade of secure jobs, but the Palaszczuk Labor Government is the only state in the nation to scrap this year’s budget.

“The LNP has an ambitious plan to build a stronger economy, drag Queensland out of recession and get

“My vision is to make Queensland the economic powerhouse of Australia again, the best place to get a job, get ahead and raise a family.

“August dire unemployment numbers are the result of Annastacia Palaszczuk’s weak economic leadership.

“For Labor to cancel a State Budget in an election year and in the middle of a recession is economically reckless.

“No budget means Labor is flying blind through the biggest economic crisis in almost a century.

“Infrastructure Australia predicts that road use in the south east will rise by another 21 percent in the next decade, costing the region’s economy $6 billion a year.”

“That’s not a huge cost when you consider the benefits from creating extra capacity across the network during peak hours and allowing Seniors more enjoyable and leisurely journeys in offpeak times,” Mrs Gaske said.

LNP Deputy Leader and Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander said Labor had no budget and no economic plan for Queensland.

“Failing to release a State Budget is yet another Labor cover-up when Queenslanders are desperate for an economic plan.

“Peak hour traffic on the Bruce Highway and even Bribie Island Road has grown enormously in recent years causing frustrating delays for motorists.

Whilst the plan will cost an estimated $2.7m a year in foregone revenue, Mrs Gaske is excited at the initiative which will create extra capacity across the Citytrain network during peak hours and take cars off the roads.

“The LNP will start work on the droughtbusting New Bradfield Scheme, invest in dams, roads and rail infrastructure to create jobs and we will guarantee no new taxes.”

“Queensland had the worst unemployment rate in the nation, highest number of bankruptcies and lowest business confidence under the current State Government ¬- and that was before COVID,” Mr Mander said.

Thousands of Seniors living in the Pumicestone electorate will benefit from free off-peak travel on local trains if the LNP wins the next state election on October 31.

Under the LNP’s plan, all trains on the Citytrain network will be free to Seniors between 8.30am and 3.30pm, 7pm and 6am, as well as all day on weekends and public holidays.

It means that Seniors card holders can travel free during these off-peak times from Caboolture to the city and return or between any other stations within the Citytrain network which extends from Gympie to the Gold Coast and out to Ipswich.

“This policy is great news for our local

BRIBIE WILL NOT REOPEN THIS YEAR

More than 2000 Bribie seniors have been anxiously waiting news of the possible restarting of classes at the University of the Third Age (U3A) Hopes have been dashed by the continued spread and threat of Covid-19 in recent weeks, despite the measures imposed..

The U3A Management Committee met recently to review the many limitations and requirements involved in safely conducting classes at the U3A Centre in the Recreation Hall.

After extensive discussion and consideration, the 14 members of the Management Committee reached a unanimous decision not to re-open until next year. Understandably, many of the 2000+ students who attend the 150 classes will be disappointed, and in some cases unhappy at this decision. Several factors influenced the decision, not the least of which is the volatile situation now spreading throughout Australia and inevitably into Queensland.

The Covid safe guidelines issued by the Queensland Government, as well as MBRC Council expectations in relation to use of the facilities, require a complex re-organisation of the timetable and room usage. Complex measures and

strict supervision would be essential to ensure social distancing, avoiding members assembling before or after classes, and sanitising of furniture and common areas after each class. The number of members able to attend any class is limited by the size of the U3A rooms and the current space per person restriction.

BEACHMERE OPENS IT’ S DOORS IN A NEW VENUE

The Management Committee did not make this decision lightly, with the primary focus and concern being the insurmountable challenge of providing a Covid safe environment, and the welfare and health of vulnerable members.

Difficult and disappointing that this decision has been, it is hoped that the logic and reasons will be clearly understood, and that members and the public will understand and endorse the reasons for it.

Several Tutors have already arranged to conduct class sessions for appropriate subjects at off site locations, or by on-line communication. Monthly Newsletters will continue to be published, and sent to all members by email, or personally delivered to those without.

Further details of proposed classes and Timetable for Term 1, commencing in January 2021, will appear in future Newsletters, and we sincerely hope that by then we will be able return to our classes, and the much loved and supportive culture of U3A ………. knowing it is safe to do so.

U3A Beachmere will welcome students back yesterday, 25 August in a Mini Program that showcases some of it’s most popular classes in it’s short history.

Whilst some of the other local U3A campuses will not open until early October, or even early next year, U3A Beachmere committed to the stringent CovidSAFE requirements necessary to allow students back into the classroom.

U3A Beachmere Chair, Mary Brown, said it was important for seniors to socialise as well as learn new skills and update their knowledge.

“One of U3A Beachmere’s main aims is to combat isolation and loneliness by providing an opportunity to learn in a stress-free environment.”

“It has taken a lot of organisation, and commitment, from our Committee

and Volunteers to ensure that we can provide a safe environment for students to return. We all agreed that, if it was at all possible, we would organise a Program as soon as possible.”

“U3A Beachmere also has a new venue, the Beachmere Hub, Main Street, Beachmere; and the additional space has helped to ensure adequate space for classes,” Mary said.

U3A will have a short four week term commencing Monday, 24 August until Friday, 18 September, with an Introduction to Acrylics, Beginner Mosaics Workshop, Mind Matters, French and Gentle Chair Stretch.

Perhaps one of the most popular “classes” is the History and Nature Walking Group which keep fit with planned, relaxed walks taking in some of Beachmere’s history and natural features.

The Beachmere Committee are already working on the Program for Term Four and students can be assured that a larger program will be available to finish the year.

U3A Beachmere has also organised a General Meeting on Monday, 31 August at 1pm to initiate plans for incorporation. Anyone interested in being a part of this emerging and exciting new community organisation, and building the U3A presence in Beachmere, is encouraged to attend.

Covid restrictions may have created some “challenges” recently, but teamwork at U3A Beachmere has helped to provide a little glimmer of light at the end of what has been a “dim” tunnel.

Changes Afoot At Bribie Bus Lines

The Local and Surrounds has received information that Bribie Island Coaches is to be bought out by Caboolture Bus Lines. The bus service on Bribie is a lifeline to many residents and a crucial link to Caboolture train station for super commuters on the island. Naturally locals are interested in the future of the service and any changes that may occur as a result of the sale.

The Local and Surrounds has contacted the new owners to ask about these issues and learned that the sale was due to take place on the 24th of August 2020 around the date of this publication. While the details of the sale are still “Commercial in Confidence” the new owners have undertaken to talk to the Local and Surrounds in time for our next edition to outline their vision for the future of the service.

The Local and Surrounds understands that Caboolture Bus Lines is a family run business that is involved in supporting the community where it currently operates.

Many people on Bribie Island and surrounds are worried about their health in the current crisis and rightly so. Many businesses are worried about losing their life’s work and many young people worry about their jobs and rightly so.

So what is the appropriate and proportionate response to the COVID 19 crisis?

Governments around the world have tried all different methods from Sweden’s minimalist intervention to New Zealand’s total lock down approach. These methods have had varying degrees of success and impact on the community with no clear winner emerging at present, time will tell once the disease has run its course or a vaccine developed.

Many readers have their own opinion on this and of course I have mine. Sharing these opinions can result in accusations of overreaction or being uncaring neither of which really help improve things.

The government in Australia has spent over $200B to save an estimated 150 000 people from COVID 19 equating to $1.4M per person which is arguably a good thing if we can afford it.

Imagine though if we spent this money on eradicating or lessening all causes of death as outlined in the chart above. As an example on this basis we would be spending $1700B a year on preventing Cardiovascular disease perhaps banning junk food, $970B on Cancer perhaps banning smoking and $200B on Dementia doing research every year for starters.

In short we would go broke, so what is the answer? How do we save people and pay for it in a way that is consistent and reasonable to our future generations?

Energex and Ergon adapt Safety Heroes to a new era in education

Beachmere ladies have been enjoying lunch on the first Friday of each month for over five years now. It has been a great way of welcoming new ladies to the area as well as a a great way for new residents to connect with locals.

What better way to find out what is happening than meet some like minded ladies for lunch that could last a quick hour or a “longer linger� over coffee.

September will be the first time the Ladies, Let’s Do Lunch will meet since restrictions began; and with about forty ladies attending most months; there will be more than a few happy ladies in Beachmere.

In a first for the Safety Heroes program, experts from Energex and Ergon Energy will be delivering lifesaving lessons through webinar events tailored for Queensland primary schools in rural, remote and metropolitan areas.

Community Safety Manager Aaron Smith said the idea was inspired by the unprecedented transition to online learning during COVID-19 restrictions in Term 2. “Virtual presentations are a way to reach schoolchildren across Queensland – no matter where you live it is important to understand how electricity works and how to stay safe around it. “While we once again have a small army of volunteers who have put their hands up to deliver Safety Heroes presentations in person, as part of this year’s program schools will also

have the option of registering for live webinars during Electricity Safety Week,� Aaron said.

Ergon and Energex are hoping to break another participation record in 2020, after 96% of Queensland primary schools registered for the Safety Heroes program last year.

Schools can register now by emailing ergonesw@primarypr.com or calling (07) 3910 1052. “Safety Heroes is an opportunity to educate students on the wonders and dangers of electricity, which is an essential part of their lives.

“Whether they spot a damaged power point at home or a fallen powerline in

their neighbourhood, children need to know the next steps to stay safe and the lead-up to storm season is always an ideal time to teach them about electrical safety,� Aaron said.

The Safety Heroes program runs during Electricity Safety Week from 7-11 September.

Before You Start!

One of the best and cheapest “hand weights” you can get is a 500ml bottle of water. Many people have difficulty holding a hard object such as a dumbbell, not because it is heavy but because they are “hard” to hold them securely if you have arthritis. Hand weights can also be expensive. Once opened a 500ml bottle of water is quite soft to hold and the weight of the bottle can also be adjusted to suit your current strength. A full 500ml bottle of water weighs 500grms (1/2kg) If you find this is too heavy then just have a drink and it will weigh less .

As your strength increases you can increase the water or add a little sand to increase the weight. Use a stable chair to sit in, wear flat bottomed shoes so when you stand up you will be balanced. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises stop!

Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok!

Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the type of gentle strength exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes, except we use resistance bands instead of weights or water bottles. If you have a resistance band or tube you can use that instead of the water bottle. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, strength training is a great way to increase bone density. Strong muscles will help with your balance and mobility but do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will give you improvement in strength over time. So use your chair put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

September is nearly here… Yep Spring is about to be sprung, which is probably just as well since your winter pants seem to be slowly shrinking. Ok, you have a nagging suspicion that it may be due to creamy pasta and fudgy puddings that you have inhaled for the past few months, but surely it has nothing to do with you never leaving your lounge chair for so long that cobwebs hang off your earlobes.

Spring! That time of year when most people decide to clean their homes and their lives, the time of year that anyone worth anything in the fitness industry offer a 12 week challenge.

“Why?” I hear you ask, “Why now?”

Well my slowly expanding friends, it is because Spring is when the outside becomes warmer and a warmer outside means that pasty humans will slowly emerge from beneath layers of fluffy, shapeless clothing and discover that it wasn’t the clothes, it was their fluffy shapeless body.

“Eeeeeek!!! Who is this person???” you will gasp as you look in the mirror while frantically tossing clothing into a “mysteriously shrunk” pile on your bed.

“What am I going to wear to the BBQ’s, the beach, my nieces wedding that has been reschedule 18 times this year!!”

Well this is when I would normally tell you that you are in luck because this is when we run our Spring Into Summer 12 week challenge! Our 12 Challenges

are designed to help you achieve fabulous results in a short period of time so that you can reveal your new stronger, healthier and fabulouserised you right before the Christmas party season.

BUT!!!! This year due to the ongoing uncertainty of restrictions we will not be running our World Famous On Bribie 12 week challenge.

BUT!!!!!!! This doesn’t mean you can’t challenge yourself! You can still achieve the most awesomely wonderfully great results in just 12 weeks, by challenging yourself!

“But does having a time frame, with a specific end date actually work?” I hear you ask (spooky isn’t it how I can hear everything you say) Yes it does! By having a set end date you remain focused on the end result being achieved on that specific date.

Instead of just mumbling “I need to lose 10kgs” vaguely to the universe while munching on a Dunkin Donut, having a set day to aim for makes a huge difference, and what makes the difference even HUGER is by telling someone and becoming accountable for it.

Our clients have had awesome results, losing 5kg, 10kg over 15kg in just 12 weeks by doing what we show them to do, by being honest with themselves and us, and by understanding that

Bring your hand with the bottle up to your shoulder and then lower back down slowly Repeat slowly only do as many “curls” as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

Seated Chest Fly Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low Start by doing this exercise without the water bottles if you find this easy you can then see if you can comfortably hold the bottles while performing the exercise. Bring elbows up to as close to shoulder height as you comfortably can with your arms at 90o Keep your arms up and slowly bring your elbows together and hold for the count “one and two” Repeat slowly only do as many “closes” as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

Bribie Respite and Support Services offers a range of services to support older members of our community to live well and remain in their own home in our beautiful Bribie Island community.

Our organisation is home grown having served the Bribie community for nearly 40years. We employ local people to support local people.

Our team provides quality care and support to fellow community members when they need assistance to enjoy a good life.

We aim to assist the people who choose our services to improve their life, remain independent and live their best life. Our staff are trained to support people living with Dementia, their family members and carers.

Our team supports people with Dementia to enable people them to continue living in and participating in our community while living with Dementia. We support family members and carers of people by providing practical and emotional support so carers have better a understanding of Dementia and feel more able to continue in their carer role.

Our team is mindful of the absolute necessity of practicing all the precautions necessary during these difficult days. All our staff have completed the Australian Government recommended COVID19 training for Aged Care and Disability service providers, have been immunised against Influenza, practice social distancing, have wellness and temperature checks performed each day and carry a full PPE kit with them each day. All clients are asked to consent to a wellness check prior to each service.

Our Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) funding allows us to provide a wide range of services to older people in our community.

We are closely monitoring the ever changing COVID19 situation and planning to reopen Group Based Day Respite activities in Mid - September if the situation at that time enables us to do so.

Group Based Day Respite is a wonderful way for older members of our community who perhaps don’t get out as much as they used to, to form friendships, enjoy the company of others, get out and about, enjoy a day out and a fresh home cooked meal in a social environment.

“For infection control reasons, so we can maintain a COVIDsafe environment for all patients, we just need them to phone ahead or book with their clinic online. It’s that simple,” Dr Green said.

Queensland drivers turn to smart tech to beat fuel price rip-offs

Queensland drivers are shopping around for the cheapest servo in town at almost twice the rate they did two years ago.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said drivers were checking petrol prices on comparison apps and websites more than 600,000 times per month, compared to less than 350,000 in 2018.

The surge follows the Government’s fuel price reporting trial, which has required retailers to provide up-to-date prices to the government, who have made them available free to app and web developers. “The Government fuel price reporting trial has clearly been a hit with Queensland drivers,� Dr Lynham said. “Queensland drivers have nearly doubled how often they are checking fuel prices each month with the dozen price-comparison apps and websites now available.

A Griffith University interim report on the price reporting trial’s first year of operating shows that motorists who shopped around could have saved over a year:

• $139 at the Gold Coast and Ipswich. • $81 in Rockhampton • $66 in Mount Isa

• $53.80 in Cairns

• and up to $179 in Brisbane.

Dr Lynham said the report also showed the two-year trial, which started in December 2018, had helped drive down average fuel prices in South East Queensland. “In South East Queensland, Griffith University found the trial delivered a small decline in the average price of all grades of petrol, including regular unleaded petrol, E10 and premium unleaded petrol,� he said.

“The reduction in average petrol prices means an extra $10 million in the pockets of Brisbane motorists, and an extra $14 million in the pockets of motorists across the south east.

“The main purpose of the trial is to make it easy to shop around and save by putting fuel prices into the hands of motivated motorists, but a decline in average prices is a double win for southeast Queenslanders.�

Dr Lynham said fuel price apps were now reported as being more reliable and up-to-date. “More than 1500 servos across Queensland are reporting their bowser prices, and we’re passing on that data free to price comparison apps and websites,� he said.

“Thanks to the Queensland Government’s fuel price reporting trial, Queenslanders don’t have to do laps around town to find the best bargain.�

The new fire truck Your invited –Anew local business network group is now in full swing in our region Called arrived in Toorbul this Month!

Bribie Business Breakfast (BBB) Early August saw the Toorbul & Donnybrook Pensioners’ Club hold its Annual General Meeting – nearly 3 months late.

There were more than 35 members present and quite a few apologies. We filled the whole hall as we carefully practised “Social Distancing”.

Our year has been a disrupted one, but members have been happy to restart many of our activities – Tai Chi, Indoor Bowls, Line Dancing, Cards and Craft, as well as our regular monthly meeting.

St. Michael’s Church conducts a Church Service at the Club House on 3rd Sunday of each month at 8.15am.

There’s a new Bribie Business networking group for small businesses in our community.

Craig McShane from Squeaky Clean Aircon Sanitising is new to the island and wanted to start up a local business network group with likeminded business owners, so he put a post-up on the Bribie Business Facebook page to see if anyone was interested, he receive an overwhelming response from local business owners who wanted to do the same thing.

BBB has grown over the last month with at least 30 businesses attending each Breakfast now. The aim is to network, support our local businesses and use each other’s services. And it is working!

The business owners who attended have already benefited from the regular network business breakfasts, with swapping cards and booking in jobs just from the breakfast. There’s a great mixture of businesses in our region from local tradies to professional services in all kinds of industries. Health, Body Corporate, Senior Care, virtual office services, Hairdressers and much more.

There’s no membership to join, the only cost is for your breakfast which is $25 usually for a full hot breakfast, the Bribie Business Breakfast (BBB) Network group go to different venues every meet up, this helps with the local café’s, restaurants and it gives the opportunity to support each local food venue.

During the past year we have been able to donate money to regular charities – the hospital, cancer research, and our special project was to help out our local Rural Fire Brigade with alterations to their building to accommodate the NEW FIRE TRUCK. The Rural Firies do a great job, and we are pleased to have a working organisation within our small town.

The new fire truck arrived in Toorbul this month, and training sessions will be undertaken soon.

The club would love to have new members from the Community, and all are welcome to join in any of the club’s activities.

A new Committee was introduced by long standing member Mr Les Duncan (himself a past President). Our new Committee has vowed to work hard for our club and community.

A Da y Ou t i n t h e B o a t Tangalooma is the aboriginal word meaning "where the fish gather" and is a great day out destination for Bribie boaties. From the Bongaree boat ramp it’s left around the bottom of the island past Red Beach to where the surf and calm of the passage gently meet around Skirmish Point. Once the Woorim water tower is in sight, head right towards the sand hills visible on Moreton Island taking care crossing the shipping channel on the 20km journey to Tangalooma.

It’s a good idea to wear your life jacket for the crossing and let the Volunteer Marine Rescue team know how many of you there are, where you are going and when you will be back. Respect the ships in the channel and don’t underestimate their speed or the power of their bow waves.

As you cross the channel and get back into shallower waters the colour of the water turns aqua marine against the white sand of the sheltered bays. These waters are comparable to anything Queensland has to offer and on a calm day with winds under 15km per hour the sea is like a table top particularly if it’s coming from the west.

Originally a whaling station, Tangalooma Island Resort is on the west side of Moreton Island. It lies on the eastern shore of Moreton Bay and is known for its resort accommodation, dolphin-feeding program, sand dunes and wreck diving. It has a population of over 300 and normally receives more than 3500 visitors every week as it is only about 50 minutes from Bribie by boat travelling at 25 knots.

Moreton Island National Park is 98% of the island, though there are three other small townships there: Bulwer, Kooringal and Cowan Cowan. The adjacent waters are protected as the Moreton Bay Marine Park.

The operation was at first very successful, employing a crew of about 140 people, but, in its final years, a collapse in catch levels made it uneconomic to continue. When the station began whaling, the population of eastern Australian humpbacks was estimated at 10,000; when it ended, the number of whales had been reduced to an estimated 500. In 1963 the hunting of humpbacks was banned in Australian waters; since then the population has been recovering. There are currently an estimated 15 000 whales migrating along the east coast of Australia each year and Eastern Humpback populations are at 90% of pre whaling numbers.

• Paperbark trees in flower The Ngugi also had a special way of hunting fish cooperatively with the dolphins! The men would wade into the water, slapping their spears onto the surface. This sound would bring in the dolphins, herding schools of fish into the shallows towards the men. The Ngugi would then catch the fish using nets made from bark fibres. They always threw part of the catch back in for the dolphins to eat!

The resort is well known for the handfeeding of wild dolphins. Every evening at sunset a pod of up to 11, local bottlenose dolphins swims to the beach in front of the resort where selected guests can feed them, an activity supervised by the Tangalooma Marine Education and Conservation Centre.

Apart from the dolphin feeding program, there are many tours and other activities on offer, including whale watching cruises. Accommodation consists of about 300 rooms, as a variety of hotel units, villas and apartments. Sites for private housing are available on the sand hills behind the resort.

Although the resort has rights to use the beach in front of the resort, it cannot prevent the public from also using the beach. Boaties can also usually duck into the resort café for a coffee and sandwich provided they have reasonable attire.

Moorgumpin meaning 'place of sandhills' is the Aboriginal name for Moreton Island. The Indigenous people of Moorgumpin are known as the Ngugi. Moorgumpin lies within the area referred to as Quandamooka.

Quandamooka is commonly defined as the Moreton Bay region.

Extensive site surveys have established that the Ngugi people lived permanently on the Island, maintaining a marinebased lifestyle for over 2000 years.

Fish, shellfish, dugong, turtle and crustaceans formed a major portion of their diet, which was supplemented by the bungwall fern (Blechnum indicum), midyim berries (Austromyrtus dulcis), pandanus and honey.

Tangalooma whaling station operated from 1952 until 1962, during which period it harvested and processed 6277 humpback whales. Whaling took place when the humpback whales migrated along the coast in winter, in

Located to the north of Tangalooma Island Resort is a total of 15 vessels that were deliberately scuttled between the 1960s through to the 1980s. These wrecks have now become a man-made ecosystem providing a haven for local marine life including dolphins, sea turtles, wobbegongs and over 200 species of fish. The wrecks are popular

Archaeological sites on the Island are important to the Ngugi descendants as a reflection of their heritage. Up to 330 cultural sites have been recorded and include shell and bone scatters, large middens and a stone quarry.

The Ngugi people's connection with the land and sea has a strong spiritual basis and some animals are strongly linked with traditions and customs. This deep connection with nature meant that the Ngugi people would look for signs to tell them of certain events that were about to take place such as the arrival of fish in the bay. In 1770 Captain James Cook named "Morton Bay" after the Scottish Earl of Morton on the 17th May, which was later misspelled as 'Moreton Bay' in translations from his journals. It wasn't until 1823 that the first 'white visitors' arrived on Moreton Island. The last of the Ngugi people were forced to relocate to Stradbroke Island in 1850, where their descendants still live today.

World War II saw two large defence batteries built on Moreton Island — one at Cowan Cowan and the second at Toompani (known as the Rous Battery).

During the war a naval base and jetty were built at Tangalooma. The remains of the batteries and other relics are still present and are of historic significance.

Now you know a bit about its history and have experienced a day out to Tangas and Moreton Island you’ll wonder why you don’t do it more often.

It’s such a safe place for any boatie to get experience and take the family for a great day out at a resort style island on our doorstep. We can only hope talk of a Redcliffe, Bribie, Tangalooma ferry comes off in the coming years to allow even more Bribie and surrounds people the pleasure of such a day out.

Is it time to refinance your home loan?

I get asked by my home loan community all the time “how do I know when it’s time to refinance my home loan”

The simple answer is you should be constantly monitoring your home loan to see if you could be saving money.

By Refinancing and restructuring your home loan you could save approx. $50,000 and own your home approximately 2 years earlier. This assumption is utilising the average home loan in Australia according to credit information provider Illion, and the difference in interest rates between existing mortgages and new mortgages according to the Reserve Bank of Australia.

Why is there such a big difference?

Effectively this is what is known as loyalty tax. This is where lenders are more interested in gaining new customers then looking after their existing customers. If you are a loyal customer of your bank i.e. been with them for longer than 2 years, then you are most likely paying a higher interest rate then that bank would be giving to their new customers.

What can you do about this? You could demand your bank reduce your rate

which probably will not happen, or you need to refinance to another lender.

The best and easiest way to do this is through a good mortgage broker who should always be working for you to scour the market to find you the best deals, saving you the most money and making the process easy for you.

Currently there are fixed rates starting at 2.09%, variable rates from 2.55% and cash back incentives of up to $4,000.

If you have an environmentally friendly home, you can even access interest rates from 1.79% fixed.

If you are paying more then the above interest rates, I recommend you get a mortgage health check to see how much you could be saving.

Savvy SEQ shoppers could save hundreds on power bills Savvy south-east corner shoppers could save up to $412 a year on their power bills by comparing offers.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said today’s quarterly report from the independent Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) showed SEQ consumers could now choose from 27 retailers to get the best deal.

The QCA report shows:

• a typical household switching from the highest standing offer to the lowest market offer could save up to $412 a year. • a typical small businesses making the equivalent switch could save up to $1044 a year.

“Regional Queenslanders are also enjoying lower power prices for the third year in a row,� Dr Lynham said. “The Government subsidises regional power bills by almost half-a-billion dollars annually to ensure families in regional communities pay a similar amount for their power as those in the south-east.�

“In these unprecedented times, getting the best deal possible on your power bill is important to help relieve cost of living pressures— particularly for people working from home, young families, and people on fixed incomes and jobseekers,� he said.

“Queensland’s economic strategy for recovery includes a $300 million household relief package with $200 off utility bills.

The rebates and dividends are being credited directly to power bills.

“And today’s figures show shopping around could save even more.�

Any customers experiencing hardship as a result of the COVID-19 economic impacts should contact their electricity retailer about support options.

“There’s another automatic asset ownership dividend of $50 coming from the Government on household power bills from September.

Today’s QCA report is a quarterly review of prices in the unregulated south-east Queensland market from April to June 2020.

We have done this before, and Cranky Lizard is confident we can do it again.

Australian manufacturing will emerge from this mess as a stronger, broader and betterbalanced sector of our economy.

We can and shall make the ‘things ‘we need for our daily lives. We can, and will, participate in world-class technological development using AI and ‘nano’ science to allow us to create new and resourceful bases from which to develop our energy and agricultural sectors of our economy.

Small and medium-sized enterprises will be the engine which drives our economic resurgence towards financial strength. The human activity and ingenuity surrounding these enterprises is staggering;

Axiomatic to these predictions will be the shifting away from the adversarial systems of our workplace relations. Necessity will force us to adjust and replace the clunky, chest-thumping industrial relations regimes that we have a State level and at Commonwealth level. Union thugs and greedy, mean-minded bosses, and there are plenty of both out there, will no longer have a place in a workforce that can work from home, that relies upon robotic technology and that can literally give the bird to any union or employer that does not apply commonsense. Cranky Lizard looks forward to that as a long overdue and welcome occurrence!

We have been a society enthralled by stock market performance and the associated dividends – this will change, rapidly. Major corporations and their returns will not be as important as individuals and their well being. Financial structures will vary with the arrival of the WFH [ work from home ] phenomena.

For the foreseeable future, Cranky Lizard sees that interest rates will remain low and this provides incentives both in borrowing and entrepreneurship.

Our current young generation can look forward to better quality housing and much lower prices, simply because we shall need the dwellings for immigration and for housing our children; improved building systems, individual selfcontained housing units located in major regional areas will also add to the general mix.

Cranky Lizard has taken some big leaps here, ably assisted by the optimism of Robert Gotleibsen of The Australian newspaper.

Australia and the Australian way of life deserve big leaps – in thinking and action.

Very, very few of us have been alive when our country has faced a more challenging time.

Sure, we have had them…The Depression, the Spanish Flu pandemic, existential threats in World War II…but we have weathered them and emerged stronger.

We are, as a Nation, the envy of much of the global community of Nations. We have arrived at our current point on our journey because we have had decent political leadership when we needed it; and we, we, as people, as Australians, have recognized that at the times when we need to, we can throw off the political cloaks and work together to build our Nation.

That is what we must do now.

Cranky Lizard knows that the future is so bright that “we shall have to wear shades.”

Securing the future of the award-winning Project Booyah

Minister for Police Mark Ryan today announced that funding for the highly successful Project Booyah program has been made permanent by the Palaszczuk Government.

More than $4.13 million over four years and $1.29 million ongoing will be provided for the Framing the Future component of Project Booyah. This means the postprogram support for graduates will now be a permanent fixture of Project Booyah.

A new school-based adaption of Project Booyah – called RESPECT – will also be funded permanently and delivered in locations right across Queensland.

Minister Ryan made the announcement at a Project Booyah graduation ceremony in Logan today.

“Project Booyah is a life-changing experience for so many young people and I commend the graduates for stepping up and committing themselves to be forces for good in our community,” he said.

“The program targets at-risk young people with an intensive 16-week course designed to build the life skills they need to turn their lives around.

“Project Booyah has an outstanding track record of delivering for young Queenslanders, but the hard work does not end with graduation from the program.

“Framing the Future (the post-Project Booyah support program for graduates) is now permanently funded to mentor graduates and to continue to connect them with employment, education and training opportunities.

“After a successful trial on the Gold Coast, a new school-based adaption of Project Booyah called RESPECT will be expanded to locations across Queensland so schoolbased police officers across Queensland can proactively mentor young people.

“This permanent funding from the Palaszczuk Government will help support young Queenslanders and build stronger and safer communities.”

Minister Ryan said a recent Griffith University evaluation of the program confirmed that it was highly successful in reducing youth offending.

“This is at the forefront of the Palaszczuk Government’s focus on safer communities,” he said.

“The evaluation found that the majority of participants did not go on to offend again.

“It also determined that for every dollar invested in Project Booyah directly saves the community $2.55.

“By investing in Project Booyah, these young people and the wider community will see the benefits.”

Member for Macalister Melissa McMahon also attended today’s graduation ceremony and said Project Booyah has an incredibly positive impact on the Logan community.

“These graduates have been working incredibly hard and it’s fantastic to see they are all on the path to a bright and successful future thanks to Project Booyah,” she said.

“Today’s ten graduates should be extremely proud of themselves and their achievements.”

Chief Superintendent Brian Swan said the program had tangible benefits for participants, communities and the economy.

“Project Booyah focuses on accountability and rehabilitation with program tactics leading to a reduction in crime and incarceration rates of young people,” he said.

Project Booyah is currently running in nine sites across Queensland: Cairns, Townsville, Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, Pine Rivers, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands and the Gold Coast.

Minister Ryan announced yesterday a twoyear trial of Project Booyah would begin in Mackay in January 2021.

Hi everyone, Recently I met with some local Bribie Island doctors and constituents to chat about how we can service the after-hours medical needs of the Bribie community.

After meeting with Simone Wilson and I, the PHN did a study which showed Bribie Island’s population, among the oldest in Queensland, had limited or no access to after-hours GP services.

At present, residents needing after-hours medical care either travel 20km to Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department or wait to see their own GP during office hours.

Together with the LNP candidate for Pumicestone Fiona Gaske, we are working with local stakeholders to find a solution and ensure the Bribie community can get the services it needs.

As a follow up to our series on local bushwalks it was suggested we visit Buderim Forest Park which is managed by the Maroochydore Council and only one hour’s drive from Bribie Island. The feature of the park is Buderim Falls otherwise known as Serenity Falls and the walking tracks through forest and picnic areas near the memorial gardens.

There are two walks past the falls one of which is 20 minutes return across Serenity Bridge and the other for the fitness minded is 1.5 hours return along Martins creek through the palm forest.

Both are rocky and uneven and slippery after rain so wear good quality shoes or boots on your adventure.

Buderim Mountain was covered with ancient forest when Europeans arrived to cut cedar in 1842 and is still home to an amazing array of plants and animals originating from their ancient rainforest ancestor species that covered Australia in warmer and wetter times thousands of years ago.

The board walk over the creek reveals the ferns, palm sand eucalypts that thrive on the waters of the rocky creek banks. These rocks are basalt boulders from the lava flows of volcanoes that erupted south of Maleny thousands of years ago when only Cranky Lizard and his friends roamed the earth.

Below the basalt is sandstone carved and shaped by the creek into cliffs and overhangs which suggests that 200 million years ago the mountain was swamp or a lake which trapped sand. Many animals like gliders and goannas live in this forest and the black cockatoos and lorikeets feed on the forest fruits and blossoms.

The falls themselves are crystal clear and easily accessible including the under fall cave and ponds. Photos from Serenity Bridge will give you the best memento from the day or selfie Facebook opportunity for those inclined

to do so. If it has rained the week before your visit you will get the best photos of the waterfalls in full flight.

Feeling refreshed and attuned with nature after your walk you can explore the modern day town of Buderim which has become so trendy even the hippies are looking cool as they walk past the eateries and boutiques of the main street. The old post office building remains and serves as the tourist information centre and community centre of the town, definitely worth a look to find more local information.

For more directions just head to Buderim and turn left at the main roundabout at the end of the street and follow the signs or use google maps to Buderim Forest Park for a great day out.

August Fishing Report Well, here they are, regular as clockwork – isn’t it uncanny? It turns out we don’t even need EKKA to get the Ekka westerlies. These August winds bring chilly days and change fishing in the Passage and around Bribie.

The breeze has usually been lifting through the day; and swinging between northwest and southwest. Around midday, when the wind direction might be changing, and the water has warmed a little, has proved to be a useful time to throw a line.

The neap outgoing tides over winter are usually a good time to try for tailor.

Cold mornings are the best time and pillies or garfish have been the best bait. Watching for birds is a way to find tailor, feeding on baitfish. Look for flocks of terns hovering over the water and frequently looking down or diving into the water. The birds are feeding on the baitfish, which have been forced to the surface, usually by tailor. You can often see the flash of tailor feeding under the surface. The tailor have been a little quieter this year than last, in the Passage and out further, but the ones we’ve seen have been great sizes. Try a bit of night-fishing under the bridge, for

Winter whiting have been easier to find, all through the Passage and along Red Beach, but many are so small that they’re not kept – even though there’s no size limit. It is hard to see the point, when you catch a small whiting, but usually where there’s one there’s a school of them. So popping it into a bucket of water will allow you to make a choice towards the end of your outing, if you manage to score a few more.

“Outside” has been very bouncy lately and not many reports have come in, but Troy did get onto a couple of good kingfish a few days ago, at Brennan’s Shoal, using live bait.

The closed season on Snapper has finished for the year, and there’s still plenty of time to target them. The ripples are a favourite local spot, just outside Pacific Harbour. If the winds drop a little, expect a few boats out there, towards the end of the month, when the tides are smaller. Choose a quiet afternoon, toss a little berley over the side and drift over the top of the tide – if you do want to anchor, remember the no-go area at Kakadu Beach and the no-anchor zone near the oyster regeneration project.

Warren, Melissa and the kids also sheltered in Ningi Creek, on a very windy day, and used a Z-man lure to land a flattie. Thomas and his Dad had the same good luck with a Z-man, catching a beauty, again in Ningi Creek.

If you’re shore-based, then casting out lures over the flats is a good tactic, using the incoming tidal flow to tempt the fish.

Turner’s Camp has been a great spot to stand at the water’s edge and use the wind to cast out. The same sandbanks are working well for flounder. You can pick up good sizes in flounder, during the cooler months of the year, and they should not be discounted, because they are an excellent eating fish – and easy to cook!

The creeks have been the place to find the flathead, and they’ve been definitely the most consistent catch this month.

The creeks are also a good place to get out of the worst of the weather.

That’s what Ben found, when he spent a miserable damp and windy day, trolling a lure in Ningi Creek, which scored him a big flathead.

We’ve had plenty of flathead brought home in the 40+ cm range, lots over 50 cm and the real biggies are out there in good numbers, too. It’s always nice to see the 60+cm ones go back in the water – they’re generally considered to be the breeders and are important for future fish stocks.

Ekka winds make fishing forecasting tricky and targeting of any particular species unpredictable. This is the start of the “between-seasons” period and every day can be different from the last.

Windy days are not all bad – get up into Ningi Creek and the other estuaries, where fish are attracted to water that is stirred a little and you can use the wind to make a good, long cast.

Z-man lures have been certainly been making their mark with the flathead. But Tassie proved that any cheap soft-plastic lure can do the trick – he told me he just played around with a range of colours in paddle-tails, until he started getting bites. Three flathead all up, not bad for a windy afternoon!
