Welcome to Issue 52. With the State Election in few months, our feature story is all about one of our biggest issues, our main road in and out of Bribie Island, including Pumicestone Road, Old Toorbul Point Road and the long awaited funding to fix the dangerous intersection there.

As the only newspaper in our region, we have a duty to the community to get to the bottom of all our issues in our electorate, keep our politicians and candidates accountable and transparent for promises or claims made through out a campaign to the seat of Pumicestone. If we cannot get the answers, then it’s important to our readers and community to know the LOCAL News has tried very hard and when a candidate does not want to work with their local media outlet, there is absolutely nothing we can do. I will not waste our time anymore. It is you the readers who will make up your own minds.

It was wonderful news for musicians.

Saturday afternoon, 13th June, ‘20, and we were free to have up to twenty folk in a group.

Venue was Welsby Parade, just down from the canal. Frustrating months had passed, silently, but the chance to express joy for the occasion was begging.

A joyous get together. Scores of pedestrians passed, listened, smiled, and clapped. Neighbours and friends and strangers.

Many sat in portable chairs on the beach front. The sun shone; as did the varied songs and audience. A new warmth to our stilted past months.

The 'concert' came to an abrupt end, however.

Two police officers were obliged to shut it all down.

Yes!......ONE complaint, by an anonymous caller, over 'excessive noise’!

The police were obviously regretful but were obliged to act.

SILENCE. The upcoming guest artists, band members and scores of listeners were frustrated and upset. ONE person can complain, the police act, and... closeup!

The participants and happy fans would have expected that any dissatisfaction should have been made directly to the band, so conflict of interest may be rectified or, at least, discussed. A Saturday afternoon music function, on our splendid holiday isle, with enthusiastic audience, lovely setting and done to celebrate new freedom from the mind-numbing past months, does not deserve such an end. Surely most of us have the etiquette to complain face to face during a situation like this.

Anyway, remnants of the day's frustrated folk, adjourned to the beach-front, to continue a diluted form of music and social intercourse. Until 7pm I believe!

May the grouch be satisfied with the confusion caused.

Why so long?

Works are due to commence this month of the intersection of Bribie Island and Old Toorbul Road. This is great news for the safety of our community and visitors, they are the number one priority - no questions asked. Everyone agrees. This story should end in about another 100 words but it doesn’t. There is unfortunately more to this story. It would have been so nice for this to be just a good news story. A win for the community. But alas, that it is not.

But Ali, 2 years of planning for one intersection and some overtaking lanes!! And this community consultation component, is this really how long the process takes in all Queensland main roads project reports or is it just Bribie Island Road?

Why Traffic Lights?

The intersection

Community safety is number one. And it’s great news for those who have been so patient and have fought for this to happen. But if community safety is number one, why has it taken so long?

Why has it taken it so long? Why, why, why? The community deserves a real answer, an answer with substance and transparency, with details, with honesty and with accountability. How in the world does it take 2 years to get to this point and coincidentally an election year? The money has basically been sitting in the bank waiting for a project report to be done!

What is the work to be undertaken?

The works will include traffic lights at the intersection and once this is complete, some more overtaking lanes.

I assume these lights will look like the other traffic lights on Bribie Island Road.

The timing at this stage is unknown on the overtaking lanes (to Saint Road) but sometime after the intersection and traffic lights is what we have been told.

If this sounds vague, it is!!!!

We’re advised the cost is approximately $30.4m, it’s funded by the Federal Government (thanks Malcolm) who contributed $20m in 2018 for works to be done on Bribie Island Road.

The State Labor Government had contributed a further $10.4m previously in 2017: in an announcement jointly made by the State Government at the time, Rick Williams Member for Pumicestone and the Labor Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Mark Bailey.

I also wonder what happens to the interest on this $30.4m - shouldn’t this amount of increased to include interest where does this go? But I digress.

This original announcement in 2017 was met with great excitement and fanfare at the time. Well done to those involved. It was a big deal. A dangerous intersection was going to be fixed.

What has happened in the 3 years since? Here is the red flag and the reason why the recent announcement just last month, again by Minister Bailey and with new Labor Candidate for Pumicestone, Ali King, made locals feel a sense of déjà vu. Hadn’t I seen this image before (with a few different faces and maybe even with the same sign in

From just over the bridge at Sandstone Point to the overpass at the Bruce Highway. 8 sets of lights! Maybe we should rename it Old Gympie Road.

And don’t get me started on the speed changes. 60, 70, 80, 90, 100. I believe we can put this down to previous band aid solutions, a speed change here, overtaking lanes there, widening a round and all spread out over a longterm - not very strategic, is the word haphazard?, or maybe just a simple word like “reactive” describes it better.

Did someone say roundabout? The roundabout at the 7/11 Service Station is a prime example of how a roundabout can manage the traffic flow and you never hear of any criticism? You just give way or drive straight through!! But apparently a roundabout isn’t suited to the Old Toorbul Road intersection, something to do with traffic flow...

This intersection is well known to the local community, tourists and the local amenities in the area including, St. Michaels School, Church and Daycare, along with the Abbey Museum and of course the local residents.

How can the Minister come to the same place 3 years later and pose for the same photo, sprouting the same funding, or was it different funding? what happened to the original funding? My late grandparents would have said something along the lines how he has some nerve coming back 3 years later.

And when is the next state election? oh, only 4 months away, October 31. Announcing the same amount of money, 3 years later, just before an election. Oh my! You don’t have to be a conspiracy theorist to put the dots together here. And unfortunately when we asked this question directly to Ali King ALP Candidate and we also asked for a direct response, none were forthcoming (more on this later..)

In a recent interview with current State LNP Member, Simone Wilson, she highlighted that this work should have been in fact completed during this time (the improvements should have been completed by now and they haven’t even been started!!) and that the only hold up was in fact, doing the paper work.

My takeaway from this interview is that Simone Wilson could not have fought any harder for this work to happen since it was announced - and here we are 3 years later. The money was just sitting there.

We recently asked Ali King 8 questions, with 1 of the questions relating to this exact matter of timing. At the request of Ms King we were only allowed to Again, Simone Wilson MP in parliament communicate via email. There was no specific details in her response on why lobbying the State Government in her government has taken so long to September 2018 to get on with Job. finally get the paper work done, Ms Ali King did say “There’s been plenty of As a long-term community member work done behind the scenes to get (1984) it makes me sick in the stomach to this point – engineering reports, that this money has been sitting idle for detailed planning and design and 3 years (2 years for the $20m), and that

The band aid solution was to reduce the lead up to this intersection to 80km/hr from 100km/ hr, unfortunately a high percentage of cars don’t see this or ignore it and are still doing 100km/hr or more. Merging onto this road from basically a standing start does not work. And forget crossing over to head west to Caboolture. That’s double jeopardy in my view. Personally, I just head back out to the highway along Old Toorbul Road.

While Bribie is known for having an older population (one of the oldest in Australia), there’s commuters that use Bribie Road on a daily basis, and of course our tourism industry, including large scale events at Sandstone Point Hotel and of course the day trippers to our beautiful beaches.

This road literally jams up at times with this traffic flow. And when there’s a crash on the bridge? Oops, that is another story - apparently that will be ok until 2038. And Beachmere Road, who knows? I implore you to drive on Beachmere Road and say that is not a matter of urgency.

We have been treated like second class citizens long enough. Fix our roads, use our funds wisely and get it done quickly.

Treat out community with respect! Sit down and talk with your local media outlets because we have a job to do as well.

Waiting years for a dangerous intersection and dangerous roads to be fixed is not acceptable. We know politics is a dirty game, but please don’t play the game at the expense of our community.

Bribie island road upgrade motoring ahead

The Australian and Queensland Governments have locked in a $30.4 million, jointly-funded agreement to upgrade Bribie Island Road.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the agreement removed a hurdle to allow works to get under way as soon as possible, supporting local jobs.

“Moving forward with priority projects is important now more than ever to support local jobs, bolster our economy and provide the safe and efficient transport connections needed for all Australians to get moving again,” Mr McCormack said.

“This package of works will provide a safer, smoother journey along the region’s main connection to the Bruce Highway while creating much-needed local jobs, which is fantastic news for the community and the local economy.”

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the package of works would deliver targeted upgrades to tackle local congestion and make the busy route safer for local families and businesses, adding to other projects already completed like the $3.7 million Peel Road intersection upgrade at Ningi.

“We’ll see the first shovels hit the ground in July to upgrade the Bribie Island and Old Toorbul Point roads intersection, installing new traffic signals, four through-lanes on Bribie Island Road, plus left and right-turn lanes for traffic turning into or out of Old Toorbul Point Road,” Mr Bailey said.

“That’ll be followed by duplicating the stretch of road up to the existing four-lane section east of Saint Road,

and other road safety improvements between Hickey and Old Toorbul Point roads.

“Investing in Queensland roads means creating Queensland jobs.

“This agreement adds to the $3.13 billion, 3,000-job roads and transport program being delivered in the region by the Queensland Government, like the soon to get under way $662 million Bruce Highway upgrade between Caboolture and Steve Irwin Way.” Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said the project complements the Australian Government's $10 billion investment in the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, Queensland’s largest road infrastructure program that is improving safety, flood resilience and capacity along the heavily used route.

“This includes $1.42 billion to upgrade the Pine River to Caloundra corridor, which intersects with Bribie Island Road and is the main road to Brisbane, as well as the $660 million upgrade between Bribie Island Road and Steve Irwin Way,” Mr Young said.

“This is all part of the Australian Government’s ongoing commitment to improve our road networks to get Australians home and spending time with their loved ones sooner and safer – no matter where they live.

“We have many people living and working in the electorate of Longman who use these roads every day, so it’s important that they feel safe while navigating to and from work or home.”

The Australian Government has committed $20 million towards the Bribie Island Road Upgrade, with the remaining $10.4 million provided by the Queensland Government.

The U3A Management Committee have decided to remain closed for the whole of Term 3.

No U3A classes this term

The Management Committee of U3A made decision three months ago, on March 16th, to immediately stop all classes and close the facility.

It was a sad day for the 150 different weekly classes and almost 2000 students who attend them.

The wide range of U3A classes play a big role in the lives of so many people, who learn new things and enjoy regular social contact.

The early shutdown decision was made in view of the high risk age category of the membership..

Following that early decision, both the Federal and State Governments made series of restrictive decisions, together with Queensland Health and our own MBRC Council, that justified the U3A decision.

The Bribie community has made significant adjustments to personal, social and business lifestyle over the last three months.

It is just not possible to maintain the procedures required with the large student numbers involved.

Further decision on the possible reopening for Term 4, which is scheduled to commence on October 4th ,will be made in due course and in the light of developments.

Scheduled annual events have also been cancelled , including the U3A Players drama performances, the combined classes Art Exhibition, and all Theatre Group trips have been cancelled for the rest of the year. Major maintenance work by Council will be carried out in the Hall and entrance foyer during the shutdown, and Solar Panels will be fitted.

Some of the regular weekly classes may be conducted by their Tutors in suitable off-site locations. Individual Tutors will communicate directly with their class members if appropriate.

A monthly Newsletter is being produced to maintains contact with everyone, and is being sent out by email. Personal deliveries of paper copies will be made to those who don’t have email.

FUTURE PLANS

Social restrictions are now being slowly lifted, but it is likely to be a long process, and risk for “Seniors” will remain high as travel and movement increase.

On 1st July 2020 the 2nd round of grants for small business opens. The COVID-19 Grants Programme is to support businesses subject to closures or highly impacted by the virus shutdown restrictions to adapt and sustain their operations.

To be eligible for application the business must be in South East Qld, have a minimum 30% decline in turnover, employ fewer than 20 staff, have an ABN and be registered for GST, have turnover normally > $75000 and not be insolvent.

Community News Without these documents, you cannot claim on your tax return. The maximum contribution remains at $25000 and any amount over this could be subject to a 15% excess tax. Ensure you have the correct top up figure over and above your employers’ super guarantee amount.

Whilst the theme remains different this year, it is important to note that equal accessibility to education still remains one of the most concerning problems in relation to younger generations. It is through our education that we are

able to gain an understanding of the world and form our personal beliefs and opinions. In 2020, the theme revolves around finding ways to ensure youth engagement for global action, focusing on engaging younger people on all levels and endeavouring to provide representation in formal institutions and in global issues. The aim of this day is to promote progression regarding education and healthcare for children and adolescents in lesser developed countries but also assist in encouraging everyone to proudly embrace themselves, their unique attributes and proudly stand up for their beliefs. Everyday we see young people fighting to better the world they will one day inherit, and though educating ourselves about these issues we are able to assist in helping make the change we desire to see. This day is about embracing new ideas, new perspectives, helping those endeavouring to make change, and to be the change needed to progress as a society. It is figures such as Malala Yousafzai who provide inspiration not only to adults but to children and society. This young women stood, and continues to stand, bravely and fearless by her beliefs and strives for rights for girls and women to access education.

In 2020, we have experienced so much change and much change will continue to occur in the following years. Perhaps as we enter this new time, it is the perfect opportunity to support foundations, charities and our younger generation who are pushing for better education, better recognition, better rights and a better world. Even during a global pandemic, we see children thanking healthcare workers, teenagers gaining political awareness eager to vote and create change but most important we have seen a generation of new ideas and perspectives. The time for children to be seen and not heard has long passed.

Together we are able to create positive change, in working together we become a unifying force. In educating we create hope.

Humpbacks return to the Sunshine State for a whale of a time

Humpback whales are returning to the warm waters off the Queensland coast, and need space to swim, feed, and have their babies.

Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said that 35,000 humpbacks are expected to travel along Queensland’s coast during this autumn and winter.

“Queenslanders look forward to this time of the year as the humpback whales return to our coastline, but if you’re on the water it’s important to marvel from a distance,” Ms Enoch said.

“Whales are a great tourist attraction, which is great news for tourism operators who have been impacted by COVID-19. Keeping the whales safe and healthy is key to this success.

“Boaties and recreational water users who get too close to the whales risk penalties or injury.

“Occasionally whales can become entangled in nets or stranded, and we encourage anyone who sees that to report it.”

The Marine Animal Release Team (MART) is specially trained to deal with whale entanglements and the public are advised to call them if whales become stranded.

“Boats must remain 100 metres away from whales, while personal watercrafts like Jet Skis have to maintain a 300-metre distance.

“For special interest whales, like the white whale Migaloo, Jet Ski riders must keep 500 metres away.

“These rules are in place to protect the public as well as these magnificent mammals,” Ms Enoch said.

If there are three boats within 100 metres, other skippers must remain at least 300 metres away, so the pod of whales are not crowded.

Penalties for getting too close to humpback whales include a minimum $652 on the spot fine or a maximum fine of $21,540.

Louise Matthiesson from the Queensland Conservation Council said the increase in whale populations is something to be proud of.

“Whales are a success story for conservation and show what we can do when we take action to protect a species and they flourish,” Ms Matthiesson said.

“At the moment, the whale population is increasing by about 10% each year which is great news.”

Minister Enoch said that humpbacks

will be in Queensland waters until Spring when they head south to Antarctic waters, and boaties can expect to be whale watching up until November.

“Skippers should be vigilant at all times including at night and move slowly away if whales approach any small crafts.

“So slow down, keep your distance, and watch out for whales at all times,” Ms Enoch said.

People can report stranded or entangled whales, or people breaching the whale approach limits by calling DES on 1300 130 372.

D’aguilar highway upgrade to drive recovery in longman

A new $1.5 billion Australian Government infrastructure package will provide an immediate injection into the economy and bring jobs back online to help stem the impact of COVID-19.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP said getting shovels in the ground on local construction projects was important for maintaining jobs and economic growth in Longman. “Every single job that we support makes a huge difference in our local communities – now and as we navigate out of the pandemic,� Mr Young said. “The project benefitting our region will include an upgrade to D’Aguilar Highway, covering Caboolture, Wamuran, Woodford, and D’Aguilar up to Yarraman. “The Government is investing $15.2 million of a total $19 million to upgrade D’Aguilar Highway, which will be welcome news for Longman residents and the region. “This crucial project will create new jobs and make our roads safer, helping our local economy to bounce back after the COVID-19 crisis.�

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the new package would fund shovel-ready infrastructure projects that can support local jobs immediately. “This funding will deliver critical infrastructure projects right across the country to help keep construction businesses running and people in jobs,� the Deputy Prime Minister said. “$1 billion of this package will fund projects that can get underway now and over the next six months, to give an immediate boost to the economy and local jobs – right at the time we need it. “We will work together with the states

and territories to deliver these jobcreating priority projects, building on our unprecedented cooperation to date through the National Cabinet of States and Territories.� “The package also includes a $500 million Targeted Road Safety Works initiative for states and territories to deliver smaller but critical projects to improve road safety and bolster the resilience of our local road networks. “The Government has already announced $500 million for local governments to support projects such as road safety improvements, maintaining community infrastructure and increasing accessibility. “Now we are announcing a substantial funding injection for national infrastructure priorities, such as the D’Aguilar Highway project. “This is part of our $100 billion, 10-year infrastructure pipeline, which is laying the foundations of a financial bridge to recovery on the other side of the COVID-19 crisis.�

Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said the $1.5 billion package, combined with the additional funding to local governments, is expected to support up to 12,000 direct and indirect jobs by creating new local opportunities and securing existing positions. “This package will support thousands of jobs across our national construction sector, which we know is facing many challenges due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis,� Mr Tudge said. “This includes local governments as well, who will receive funding to deliver targeted projects in their area.“These types of infrastructure projects will be particularly crucial for helping us bounce back after the COVID-19 crisis has ended by ensuring we have the safe transport connections needed for all of Australia to keep moving. “We will continue to work across governments and in partnership with industry to ensure the safety of all Australians while they deliver our pipeline of critical infrastructure projects.�

A full weekend of events and activities had been planned, with arrangements now being made for a Back to Beachmere weekend in May 2021, which will incorporate all the activities scheduled.

Afford Delivers NDIS Support Across Queensland

Heading past the shops on Benabrow Ave across from the Vet and Simone Wilson’s office a little pastel hut sits at the end of the car park in the middle of the lanes heading to and from the Bribie Bridge.

Not much bigger than a kid’s cubby house it flies the information centre flag out front to indicate what’s inside. Many buzz past without noticing but the information centre is a treasure trove of information on the islands history, features, businesses and attractions.

The walls have local brochures from businesses like the ferryman, 4WD tours, national park maps, guides to the passage, accommodation options, eateries, island history, activities and attractions like the butterfly house and local museums.

Local papers give the visitor a flavour of what’s happening in the community and upcoming events.

Maps of the island are popular and the volunteers can highlight the areas a day tripper may be interested in like the Bongaree Jetty, Seaside Museum and shops, the views from the VMR shops and cafes for lunch goers and the patrolled flags and look out of Woorim.

Queensland is changing things up for the 60th anniversary of Seniors Week, with a new format to deliver events.

Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke said some key changes this year would mean this important event could be celebrated by all Queenslanders, young and old.

“We were originally looking forward to having an entire month of celebrations in August to mark the 60th anniversary of Seniors Week, but the COVID-19 pandemic has unfortunately had an impact on those plans,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

Definitely worth the visit when it reopens after the recent close as a local resource and vital asset in getting local businesses up and going after the Corona Virus closures.

“In acknowledgement of this, we will be deferring our usual Seniors Week grants until 2021, when the community can take full advantage of coming together again in person.”

The Palaszczuk Government has been working with the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland to get things on track for August.

“Seniors Week is all about giving Queenslanders the opportunity to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds,” said COTA Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans.

“Physical distancing may change the way we do that, but a virtual Seniors Week can still bring people together in unique ways.”

Mrs O’Rourke said she hoped the online format would encourage participation from seniors right across Queensland, including those in remote or regional areas.

“This will open up Seniors Week to people who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to travel and experience this kind of community celebration,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

Recent advice from the Chief Health Officer has indicated that Queensland seniors can leave their homes and start going back to the things they enjoy.

“COVID-19 has showed us that we can still connect with friends and family while isolated, and now we will be able to engage in Seniors Week activities from the comfort of our homes.”

“It’s important to remember that even though some restrictions are easing, not everything is yet back to how it was before the pandemic,” said Mrs O’Rourke.

With the release and distribution of Concept Plans for the Biggs Ave, Beachmere Streetscape local business owners are concerned about a decrease in trade caused by reduced customer access to their businesses.

The work is “scheduled” to take four months with construction to commence in early 2021. Councillor for Division 2, Mark Booth, touted that the work would: “create a shared zone, reduce speed limits, protect existing trees, incorporate new planting and upgrade street drainage. The outcome will provide a safer, more vibrant, better connected environment for residents and visitors to Beachmere!”

While locals were urged to “vote” on their choice of colour and design, business owners advised that they have received no notification of works and the lengthy time that the work would take, or if any consideration was being made to compensate them for loss of business.

Locals agree that some action needs to take place to reduce the speed of vehicles in the area and offer some increased safety to the pedestrians.

Signage declaring reduced traffic speed and road markings have made little difference to the speed of vehicles travelling in the area.

With the downturn of business in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, business owners are not happy with at least another four months of diminished trade caused by decreased access to their businesses, noisy construction and increased levels of dust and reduced customer parking.

Well now, where do I start? Firstly I’m really happy to be back “persuading” you with my ramblings on the importance of being healthy and fit, and I would like to thank Island & Surrounds for all their support during those interesting months.

Personally, we got through safe and sound, and are extremely grateful for the support we received from our clients during the closedown. This time has been extremely difficult for small businesses, and we feel especially blessed to be reopening and doing what we do best, which is giving anyone, at any age, the ability to be as fit and healthy as they can be.

For me, a silver lining to all that has happened is that hopefully many people have had time to stop and reflect on how investing in your health and fitness is far more important than buying a new dishwasher.

I’m also hoping that I won’t need to be as “persuasive” to convince you that if you look after your health all the time, you will be ready when suddenly faced with a situation that requires you to have the strength and health to carry on.

Of course being strong enough to carry 87 rolls of toilet paper isn’t a goal I’ve

ever had to train someone for, also being able to shoulder barge others to grab 18 bottles of hand sanitiser, is a skill that I would’ve thought took years to acquire – but sadly no!

Now although those skills will hopefully no longer be needed, they did show how fitness is important, although personally I wish some would strengthen their ability to care about others in the community.

Anyway… What’s happening now?

Well as the restrictions are changing on a weekly basis, and I’m writing this about 3 weeks before you’ll read it, all I can say is that since we are registered with Fitness Australia, we are following ALL guidelines required by both Fitness Australia and Queensland Health.

What we found interesting was discovering that we’ve always followed the “new” guidelines (except the social distancing).

Yep,we have always had hand sanitiser available in our studios; we have always wiped/sprayed our equipment between each client and class. Our studios are cleaned daily as always. So for us, nothing has really changed at all. Obviously, once again we are wayyyyy ahead of the pack.

Senior Exercises Static Balancing Practice Before You Start!

Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

If you are feel unstable when standing on one foot please stand next to the kitchen bench or a stable chair for support if needed.

Standing tall, with your shoulders back, and your hands on your hips.

Support yourself on your right leg with that knee slightly bent.

Stretch your left leg forward and lift it about 2 inches from the floor.

Hold for 5 to 10 seconds before returning slowly to the starting position.

Repeat the exercise with the other leg. Perform 2 to 3 times with each leg. Rest

Repeat the exercise with the same arm movements and start while standing on your left leg. Perform 2 to 3 times with each leg. Rest

Unfortunately, the one thing that has changed is the Heartbeats classes won’t be restarting until September.

This is for several reasons. The current restrictions on numbers allowed to gather and the distances required between participants. Classes are held in a retirement village so those living there are at the highest risk, and also by September flu season will be over, we will all be more familiar with everyday restrictions, and spring would have sprung!

Sooooo… What have you been doing whilst locked away? Have you made promises to yourself about YOUR health and fitness? More importantly are you going to keep those promises?

How are those button up pants feeling?

Have they inexplicitly shrunk while they hid in your wardrobe? Has Zoom chats made you comfortable wearing fancy tops while your trackies lurked below your screen along with your bowl of M&Ms? I don’t think anyone was prepared for what happened, but some were fit and healthy enough to know that they were in a “good position” should the worse occur.

Type II Diabetes can be completely reversed by eating correctly and exercising, Heart Disease can be reduced with correct nutrition and exercise. You can experience better results from treatments for cancer if you add in gentle exercise. High blood pressure can be reduced, sleep apnea can be reversed, pain from sore joints and arthritis can be reduced. To make these things happen will honestly only take a few small changes!

Bribie Respite and Support Services offers a range of services to support NDIS participants to pursue their goals. We also support older members of our community who choose to remain in their own home and be supported with Community Living Services.

Our organisation is home grown having served the Bribie community for nearly 40years. We employ local people to support local people. Our team provides the best care and support we can to our fellow community members who need support and assistance to enjoy a good quality of life.

We aim to assist the people who choose our services for NDIS supports, to improve their life, gain independence and the capacity to live in their best life. We also support family members and carers with practical and emotional support so that they feel more able to continue in their carer role.

Our NDIS Learning Centre program restarts on 13th July 2020, the Centre offers a group based learning environment to develop: • Domestic, shopping, gardening and cooking skills • Transport training • Communication, self-care and confidence skills • Practical literacy and numeracy skills, including money management

• Friendships • Special interest including boating, fishing, woodwork, girls club, blokes group The NDIS Learning Centre also offers the opportunity to participate in: • Overnight Camps • Swimming skill development • Movie, Karaoke, Dinner and Bowling nights • Arts and crafts afternoons • Musical theatre and performance classes • Physiotherapy based exercise classes • Volunteering activities • Day visits to community spaces such as parks, libraries, local attractions and beaches Our NDIS Community Living Services provides support programs to access the same types of activities provided through the Learning Centre but in a 1:1 supported basis.

Skills that are emerging in a group environment can be practiced and developed further with a dedicated support worker providing 1:1 assistance in your home, in the community or at the Centre.

NDIS Co-Ordinator Andrew, is available to assist you to get the very best from your NDIS plan, if you have not yet registered for NDIS and are eligible he can also assist you through the process.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads Steve Minnikin MP discuss the state of Beachmere Road with Fiona Gaske LNP Candidate for Pumicestone and the much needed upgrades the community has been asking for many years.

LNP candidate for Pumicestone, Fiona Gaske has slammed the condition of Beachmere Road, labelling it as “disgraceful” and “an accident waiting to happen”.

Out inspecting Beachmere Road last week with Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Steve Minnikin MP, Ms Gaske said that the Palaszczuk Labor Government has not found any money for vital

upgrades despite years of lobbying by representatives and the local community.

“With no State Budget being delivered by the Labor Government this year it’s unlikely any funding will be made available for the much needed upgrades any time soon”, Ms Gaske said.

“Beachmere locals are fed up with being told their main connecting route is not a priority and it makes me wonder whether Transport Minister Mark Bailey has ever travelled Beachmere Road”.

Ms Gaske highlighted that the number of accidents is greater than records show with many locals reporting chilling near misses that don’t make their way onto data spreadsheets.

“When we talk about Queensland roads in poor condition, Beachmere Road

would be right up there”.

“There is a five kilometre stretch with no road shoulders and narrow lanes, add to this no lighting and it is an accident waiting to happen”, Ms Gaske said.

After inspecting the road for himself, Mr Minnikin said the concerns of locals is understandable, describing Beachmere Road as “in a lousy state”.

“It’s no wonder Beachmere locals are up in arms - they deserve a Government who will not only listen to the concerns of road users but act on it”, Mr Minnikin said.

Mr Minnikin highlighted that Beachmere Road carries a considerable volume of traffic and is the main route to the Bruce Highway from Beachmere.

“There’s no alternative route without making a large detour up Peel Road to avoid the hazardous conditions of Beachmere Road, and Fiona tells me many do!” Mr Minnikin said.

Ms Gaske said that in the past weeks she has spoken to many Beachmere locals and held a mobile office to hear the community’s concerns.

“The call for this road to be upgraded is the number one issue raised with me and the sentiment expressed by locals is ‘enough is enough – fix this road’”, Ms Gaske said.

“Today, I am calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to make Beachmere Road a priority for upgrading” “Locals have the right to a safe, hazard free journey and leaving this any longer is simply not good enough”, Ms Gaske said Shadow Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Steve Minnikin MP chatting to Fiona Gaske, LNP Candidate Pumicestone about the condition of Beachmere Road. Photo Supplied Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP recently gave a grant to Bribie Island Butterfly House Volunteers organisation for $1,030 as part of the Morrison Government’s Volunteer Grants program, which has seen a total of $63,750 provided for 18 organisations across the Longman electorate.

“I’m proud to support Bribie Island Butterfly House with this grant for the wonderful work their volunteers do,” Mr Young said.

“The grants form part of the Morrison Government’s commitment to supporting organisations whose volunteers assist our communities and encourage the inclusion of vulnerable people in our society.

“Butterfly House’s tireless efforts to support vulnerable people in the Bribie Island community and beyond are inspiring.

“It was fantastic to visit Butterfly House recently with our LNP state candidate for Pumicestone Fiona Gaske and hear how Butterfly House is managing through the pandemic.”

LNP candidate for Pumicestone Fiona Gaske said volunteers make up the backbone of our community.

“I’m a passionate supporter of Bribie Island Butterfly House and other vital community organisations - they are an essential part of our social and economic fabric,” Ms Gaske said.

“It was a privilege to meet the Butterfly House volunteers to thank them for their incredible work – I’m looking forward to visiting again when they reopen for the school holidays.”

Not only does Butterfly House help the Bribie Island community, but they also help other community organisations locally and globally.

LNP State Candidate for Pumicestone Fiona Gaske and Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP visiting Bribie Island Butterfly House to give them a Federal Government Volunteer Grant.

Butterfly House donates around $10,000 each month to other charities, including Bribie Island and District Neighbourhood Centre for Emergency Relief assistance, RizeUp Australia for domestic violence victims, and the Entrust organisation for their work tackling poverty overseas, including in Africa and South East Asia.

The Volunteer Grants can be used to buy small equipment for volunteers or for the reimbursement of volunteer fuel, transport or training costs. Community groups can apply for between $1,000 and $5,000. The 2019-20 funding round has seen $9 million provided to around 2,698 community organisations across Australia.

Tear Down the Statues – Defund the Police –Deny our History In the recorded history of our Nation, we have seen many trials, natural disasters, two devastating World Wars, which ripped our gene pool apart for at least two generations. We have endured floods, wildfires, droughts, which tear the heart out of the Bush and political nonsense which tests us and causes us to question just who it is that we place in our Parliaments?

But, we are resilient people, Australians, we grit our teeth, shove some steel into our spine and get on with our lives, doing the best we can with what we have.

In recent times, following the terrible death of an African American criminal, George Floyd, at the hands of Police in Minnesota in the USA, there has been a flood tide of mainly young Australians, infected with rage and hatred streaming through the streets of our major cities.

They are incensed by our history.

This is a global phenomenon in as much as the screeching and raging are conducted by mainly affluent young people in the major western democracies. Their targets are the statues of men whose achievements, by the standards of long ago days, were worth capturing for history by erecting statues of them in our cities and on the grounds of our significant Universities.

What these men did, in those long-ago times, is now deemed, by the influential baby boomers in the tertiary institutions, to be offensive, and the destruction of the statues is now essential to the common cause of trashing Western civilization’s values.

And, of course, the influential boomers, through the overflowing sewers of the internet and social media, recruit the mob to destroy the statues and chant nonsense as they do so.

The apparent faults in logic and commonsense in these mad activities invite some obvious questions. When all the offensive statues are destroyed, what then? Will the world be better? Will racism and poverty be diminished?

I have lived long enough and seen enough of human behavior to say that I hardly think so!

Humans cannot destroy their past.

William Faulkner was spot on when he made a comment: “ The past is never dead. It’s not even past.”

This contagion of ‘ cancel culture ‘ is not even new. I take you all back to the city of Florence in 1497. Girolamo Savonarola demands a Bonfire of the Vanities and the trolls leap to the task – mass burnings of cosmetics, paintings, jewelry, and books occur – all the sinful objects are burnt.

But they are baaack! We still have them!

The activists see the statue destruction as victories. Well, in my opinion, they are victories built on a shaky foundation of deceit. The destruction of symbols such as statues and artistic creations such as films and books plus the humiliation of people like actors is an admission by the activists that they cannot mount a sensible argument for ‘ cancel culture‘, so they wreck property, both intellectual and physical, as an alternative.

And those actions leave them as prisoners of symbols and language, they stand amidst their wreckage, panting and grinning, oblivious to the absurdity of their actions.

We hear, reported in the media and seen on TV screens for those mad enough to watch, the pathetic mimicry of the Greens as their representative stands in the Senate of our National Parliament and advocates the defunding of Australian Police Services.

What mindless and comic mimicry of the Marxoid politics flowing from The New York Times and The Guardian newspapers from the United States of America?

We deserve better from members of the Greens in the Australian Senate. From a promise of fresh thinking and innovative solutions to social problems, the Greens have morphed into a myopic, bitter, and dysfunctional force in Australian politics. They are not worth the money they are paid by the Australian taxpayer if all they can do is babble international nonsense.

Labor raises the risks for Queensland volunteers Volunteers in Queensland’s charities and not-for-profit organisations will now have to deal with more red-tape and face tougher laws than corporate directors under new laws passed recently by the Palaszczuk Labor Government.

After many months of heightened media coverage over summer, the plight of residents in drought affected areas has become lost in the Covid-19 results and restrictions as well as local and world political events.

West of Brisbane there are many families involved in farming, tourism and local busines doing it tough as drought, once again, makes life difficult and even more challenging. Wildlife carers are amongst those meeting those challenges, albeit with no assistance from any government program or council relief package.

Virgin to remain Queensland’s national airline Virgin Australia will remain the national carrier of Queensland after Queensland fended off attempts from other states to attract the airline.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick confirmed today that Bain Capital had been selected by administrator Deloittes as the preferred bidder for the airline, pending a final agreement with creditors in August.

The Treasurer said he was delighted that Virgin Airlines would continue as Australia’s second national carrier, with its headquarters to remain in Queensland.

“Keeping Queensland jobs in Queensland as we deal with the economic fallout of the global coronavirus pandemic is very important,” the Treasurer said.

“We’re managing the health response and now we can start delivering Queensland’s plan for economic recovery.

“Part of our plan, Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs, is about supporting traditional industries like tourism.

“Importantly, Queenslanders will now also own a strategic equity stake in the airline.

“Queensland is the home of aviation in Australia, and we are thrilled that our investment, a mix of equity and economic incentives, has helped to secure that into the future.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s investment, facilitated by Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC), will ensure that Virgin’s headquarters remain in Brisbane, retaining thousands

of direct and indirect jobs.

“We have always said a second national airline is critical for Australia, for jobs, for tourism, domestic travel and freight.

“We will always back Queensland jobs, and we will always act in the best interests of Queenslanders.

“If the investment did not stack up, we would not have proceeded, but through QIC, we have landed a solid, commercially astute deal, that will benefit Queensland.

“As we unite and recover from COVID-19, this is a deal that will secure hundreds of jobs and livelihoods throughout Queensland.

QIC’s Damien Frawley said its State Investments team had applied a disciplined commercial lens in assessing the State’s investment, in alignment with its broader economic goals for Queensland.

“We are well-equipped to manage the State’s interest with a track record as an acquirer, owner and manager of nationally significant assets for both governments and long-term investors,” he said.

Cranky Lizard Speaks WHO SAID WE CAN’T DISCUSS THIS ISSUE IN THE LOCAL PAPER? IT EFFECTS ALL OF US…

AND WE ARE PAYING FOR IT… SO, WE SHALL DISCUSS THE FACTS SURROUNDING THE ISSUE.

THE ISSUE IS : “ BLACK LIVES MATTER “ INTHE AUSTRALIAN CONTEXT. Discussing these facts and forming an opinion about them is not hate speech – it is a normal, rationalized, civilized debate.

And.

If we have any chance of dealing with these significant matters, then we must deal with the facts, ugly or not, to arrive at a sensible conclusion. It is the Australian Community which must deal with these matters – we cannot shove this onto a politician’s lap and walk away.

We have done this since the early 1970s, and we, as a community at large, have achieved nothing, absolutely nothing!

Right from the start, we should get some matters clarified, so we are all talking about the same thing.

Cranky Lizard claims we are paying for it; well, we are. The Australian Bureau of Statistics has recorded that 780,000 people in Australian are accepted as aboriginal people. That is about 3% of the population of 23 million. In each annual Federal Budget, thousands of millions of taxpayer dollars are allocated to Aboriginal people, and Aboriginal related matters, such as Aboriginal Health Services, Aboriginal Land Councils, Aboriginal only Boarding Schools, Aboriginal Land Management trusts: it is a comprehensive list.

The allocation of these funds is not an issue for Cranky Lizard; they provide a means of access to education and health resources, which would otherwise be denied for many Aboriginal people.

It is not the funding that is the problem, although the manner of the use of the funds may well be of much interest, this issue is much broader than mere finance.

There are many Australians who accept that Australian Aboriginal people are disadvantaged in our society in terms of opportunities for education, employment, housing, and health – to mention a few!

So, ask yourself, why is this so?

Cranky Lizard suggests that in seeking the answer, there are a couple of points of fact that should be acknowledged.

The first point is that not all Australian Aboriginal people see themselves as disadvantaged. Cranky Lizard has worked and lived with tribal and rural dwelling Aboriginal people in the Top End of Australia for many years. Experience gained in Western

Arnhem Land, the Tiwi Islands and the Finnis River Region plus experience with Eastern Arrente people in Central Australia provides Cranky Lizard with a reasonable platform from which to speak.

Aboriginal people living in Arnhem Land in Northern Australia do not consider themselves disadvantaged at all. They have, since Federation in 1901,dwelt on their own land, lived their lives according to their customs and traditions whilst having the benefits of the latest medicine, education and administration systems available to them. These are proud, dynamic and innovative people who know how to live well off the country they inhabit.

They are not mendicants; they do not complain, they live their lives quietly with dignity, and they relate to their fellow Australians positively.

The second point is that the vast majority of Australian Aboriginal people live in settlements and towns, located in some of the most remote areas of Australia. Do they do this by choice? Well, there are not many options available to them. But by living in these remote areas, they are removed from all sensible employment opportunities. The degree of isolation impinges upon the standards of health, education, administration, and social interaction available to them. Simple commonsense will tell you that if you want to work in the Australian context, you must be where the jobs are – and there are not many jobs in these remote communities.

Some years ago a Western Australian Premier tried to address this obvious problem of isolated communities and the lack of opportunities; he was howled down by the emerging ‘ woke ‘Community and the remote towns and settlements remain.

In the recent street demonstrations regarding the Black Lives Matter phenomenon, which was deemed important enough to disregard the COVID-19 quarantine restrictions, much was made by the compliant and sympathetic media of Aboriginal deaths in Police custody. Data available to anyone who wishes to inform themselves of the facts will see that the claims, made by the ‘ woke ‘ mob of Aboriginal people being murdered whilst in Police custody are just nonsense. The Australian Police Services do not conduct institutionalized murder campaigns of Aboriginal people or any people for that matter. The data shows that Aboriginal people do die in custody, suicide and sickness are the cause. Proportionately many other Australians die in custody as well, suicide and sickness are also the causes.

Then there is the matter of the number of Aboriginal people in custody or in jail, and it is disproportionate for the size of the Aboriginal population – no question about that.

But why is it so?

Well, if you continually break the law, you will eventually finish up in custody or in jail.

That is a fact.

It is also utter nonsense and an irresponsible denial of the facts to say that the large population of aboriginal

people in custody or jail is the fault of other Australians.

Beachmere lake –get it right!

It is not.

The available data shows that other Aboriginal people commit most violence against Aboriginal people. The level of domestic violence is truly shocking, with Aboriginal women suffering terribly.

Rather than looking to sheet the blame for this violence on other Australians, perhaps it is time that Aboriginal people looked at themselves?

Cranky Lizard knows many Aboriginal Australian people who work and live in our society peacefully, happily, productively employed, and enjoying life with their families. They consider themselves Australians and proud of being of Aboriginal descent. They are clear in their views that the aboriginal industry needs to look hard at what it does. How can you expect to be a part of Australian society if you live in remote settlements far away from the major institutions of modern Australia? You cannot have both.

You are either part of it ; or you are not part of it.

Constant academic noise about ‘ voices ‘ in Parliament do not resonate with Australian people who do wish for all Australians to have a fair go…they voted in a referendum for that!

It will not work to continue to blame everyone else for your troubles.

Australian aboriginal people hold Australian passports; they vote in our elections, the laws that apply to them apply to all of us, they have access to the same financial benefits that the social security system in Australia provides, how much more equal do they want to be?

Cranky Lizard knows that these words will infuriate a number of people.

So be it. What is written here is based on fact, not emotion. If we are going to deal with the issue at all, we must have conversations based on facts, and the conversations must be respectful.

Cranky Lizard knows that this is not an easy matter. There are no simple solutions.

If you think you have a solution, then here is an idea.

Cranky Lizard proposes a challenge to you.

Here you are: You have a position of unchallenged political authority, and you have an unlimited budget. What are you going to do to address the problems of the Aboriginal Community in Australia?

Perhaps, in 100 words or less, you could give us all an idea of what you would do by listing a series of dot points of an action plan.

Locals are demanding that the Moreton Bay Regional Council “get it right” with regard to the Beachmere Lake and the continuing fish kills in the area.

In 2009, 2010 and again in 2019 thousands of fish have died in the lake due to any number of reasons as provided by Moreton Bay Council.

In 2009 and 2010 reasons for major numbers of fish dying included a blockage in an inlet pipe, construction of a sewerage pumping station and lack of oxygen.

In 2019 a major fish kill, attracting major media attention, was attributed to a blockage in an inlet pipe that caused a loss of tidal flushing to the lake.

Bring on 2020 and yet another fish kill – this time, luckily, on not such a large scale.

The Council advises “the Beachmere Lake is a constructed lake which plays an important role in stormwater and flood mitigation for the Beachmere community” and that it provides “significant visual amenity” to surrounding dwellings.

The Lake is connected to the ocean via a tidal exchange system, which, “assists in maintaining good water quality within an estuarine environment.”

Council says it will be carrying out a number of improvements to Beachmere Lake to improve functionality in June 2020 with an aerator system upgrade “due to the increased maintenance issues and inability to access parts to repair when necessary”. Council staff are currently on site renewing the lake wall – repairs which were delayed from 2019 after the major fish kill at the time.

Water circulation systems have been installed which are to monitor water quality and oxygen levels in the lake.

The latest fish kill, albeit smaller in number but just as devastating for lakeside residents, was purportedly due to a run off of pesticide from the local area. The tidal exchange system was, apparently “working” and water temperature and PH and oxygen levels within an acceptable range.

Although Council representatives and officers advised that samples had been sent off and they were “awaiting test results”, locals are still awaiting confirmation, information and some basic courtesy in replying to requests for information.

Winter Garden Maintenance Lawn Weeds

It is getting a wee bit chilly these last few mornings for us- climatised Queenslanders, and I know some people who are from the southern states have come to Bribie Island for our warmer climate would be shaking their heads at that statement. Many would have experienced real winters in comparison. I remember one of my lovely customers last year who moved up here from Melbourne and had contracted us to design and create their landscape gardens for their newly built home on Bribie Island. It was July- last year, April and Patrick were standing in front of me on this cool morning as we greeted each other, I was wearing shorts of course, I said, “good morning - it’s a wee bit chilly isn’t”, April turned around as quick as a flash with a smile and said “Mick- it’s not cold here, if you want to experience cold, try living in Melbourne during winter, this is heaven in comparison”, well that put me in my place as I laughed out loud - while I was shivering in my shorts. Seriously though, a few weeks ago we had the southern winds blowing a gale around the coastal districts and I saw many people walking along the esplanade wearing winter coats and tight fitted

The lawns have definitely slowed and while the lawn mowing has taken a step back in the maintenance program, we have been busily controlling lawn weeds and improving the general health of our soils, gardens and lawn grasses for our clients right up to the date of writing this article. Some weeds are still growing rampant. It can be hard to initiate a chemical control program using a spray apparatus with wind about, as the dreaded unwanted spray drift may decimate garden or landscape

Plant of the Month Angelonia angustifolia ‘ Archangel’ Series

Angelonia angustifolia - ‘Archangel’ TM Purple, is part of the (Archangel) trademarked series of vastly improved varieties of summer snapdragons which were bred to produce larger flowers in sturdy spires from early spring right through the hot summer months and continuing through autumn and early winter. In the warmer parts of Australia, Summer Snapdragons are considered perennials but treated as annuals in the colder climate zones unless you can offer them protection. The ‘Archangel’’ TM collection, consists of a spectacular variety of stunning colourful blooms of blue, raspberry, white, pink, red and purples to only name a few, but all these members from this collection are hardy once established and can flower reliably all through our hot and humid summers in Qld. Other cultivars available and marketed in Australia are the ‘Angelface’ TM collection from ‘Proven Winners’, which also comes in a series of beautiful and stunning colour variants which have been registered with Plant Breeders Rights (PBR). Summer Snapdragons grow well in pots, grouped, and mixed with other colourful varieties to give that intense vibrant cottage style garden feel. Angelonia - hybrids, have become one of my favourite choices for filling in some vibrant colour and style into the flowering landscape design. They grow only to 30 - 40cm tall and wide and are easily sourced in the growing season. plants if the vapour drifts, so timing is crucial. Winter grass- Poa annua, is growing right on cue presently and they are easily identifiable with their shiny green leaf blades that form a clumping whirl formation and their thin slender flowering stems adorned with soft white triangular shaped seed heads. The problem with weeds like winter grass, Bindii or Clover is they will often set seed below the mowing or cutting height and as a result will spread undetected. Usually the seeds from winter grass have been lying dormant from last year’s flowering and they find their way into bare patches of turf or where the turf struggles to get enough sunlight during winter due to increased shade from surrounding trees or buildings. Winter grass can be easily hand pulled and removed from the lawn as their root system is shallow.

There are chemical options available for large infestations including some pre-emergent herbicides. I prefer to pull them as I see them when I can of course.

So, if you have the time and inclination, you can scan your lawn grass before cutting next and pull these lawn weeds out before they will become next years problem! Good excuse for a hot morning cuppa and a walk around to investigate!

The Image supplied above from my own portfolio I included to demonstrate how we can perhaps shape some existing plants in the landscape with the aim to create a semi-formal looking garden design, but still blend some of the original elements of the Australian native bush theme. The Lomandra longifolia or Matt - rush are the grassy looking plants growing in the gravel in the garden, with their natural reed-like habit are intertwined with the rough

Subtropical Topiary. shaped granite stepping stones and of course the topiarised semi-formal native trees which actually compliments the overall design by adding just a touch of formality. One of the manicured trees is a beautiful lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), which was trimmed and eventually evolved to form the topiary.

These manicured specimens will need frequent shaping to keep them looking their best but at the compromise of producing less flowers unfortunately.

We managed to let the lemon myrtle produce flowers while still holding its shape, the flowers were still a sight to behold with masses of cream coloured blooms growing in clusters at the branch tips and were a bee magnet.

The quirky thing about hedging fragrant plants is that you become very fragrant also, which helps when you are sweating away on a hot summer’s day! You can also use lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) leaves in home cooking recipes for that lovely Australian gourmet style meal with their fragrant signature lemon scent!

For many Bribie Islanders leaving the island and surrounds is not something to look forward to but for others leaving for the day makes coming back over the bridge all the more special. The feeling of how lucky they are to be living here comes over them as they return to their little paradise.

Landsborough Train Tunnel

After enjoying the second look out over the falls you re emerge near your car for the short drive back to Mapleton.

Walking makes you hungry and the little streets of the town are lined with cafes serving home style quiches pastries and salads as well as all natural drinks and of course coffees.

So if you are going to make the trip where can you go that’s worthwhile and good for you?

Try the local bush walks within 30 to 60 minutes’ drive of Bribie they are much more interesting than a trip to Cabo for the shops.

Your local options are: • Mt Tibrogargan Circuit (30 minute drive and 3.5km walk) • Landsborough Train Tunnel track (40 minute drive and 4km return walk) • Mapleton Falls (60 minute drive and 1.3km return walk) • Kondalilla Falls Circuit (60 minute drive and 4.7km walk) All these options are an easy half day followed by lunch at the local townships like Mapleton and Montville which are an added attraction of country style, food and arts.

Your drive home will take no time as you discuss the day’s highlights.

Kondalilla Falls

The disused rail tunnel is 40 minutes walk along a bush track that begins by running parallel to the current train line to Nambour and beyond.

Following that it veers off into the bush along the stony remains of an old rail line toward the tunnel. The track gradually cuts deeper in to the rock as the tunnel nears.

For those not fussed on tunnels the good news is that the light of one end can be seen from the other end and the torch on your IPhone is sufficient to get you there and back and to check for ferns and microbats.

Formally known as the Dularcha railway tunnel is one of only two tunnels built along the old narrow-gauge, North Coast Line between Brisbane and Gympie. Building the tunnel was labour-intensive work undertaken by T.J. Jessor and Co. Their workers built the concrete lined tunnel using basic machinery and horses to assist with carting heavy loads.

Some of the first passengers through the tunnel were troops sent from Brisbane to quell the Shearer’s strike in January 1891.

Mapleton Falls

Your walk starts off a bit cool as you realise you are high in the mountains under a thick canopy blocking much of the sun but you soon warm up along the track. The surrounding forest changes constantly between eucalypts and palms and rain forest.

Kondalilla, an Aboriginal word meaning 'rushing waters', describes this park's waterfall during the summer wet season. Skene creek drops 90 meters over the fall making it a spectacular feature of the area.

Look out for the small finches and other native birds along the track who seem totally unphased by human presence as they scour the trees for food.

This hour and a half gentle walk is punctuated by great views of the imposing mountain above as well as many other Glasshouse mountains and volcanic peaks around and below.

Nearby Montville is also a charming village so perhaps allow some time to browse the local arts and crafts after lunch.

The path is flat and well kept snaking around the base of the mountain through casuarina groves, banksias and forests. Keep an eye out for the black Cockatoos in the trees and the peregrine Falcons circling above.

There are good picnic facilities there and you can watch the accomplished climbers going up and down the track to the top of the mountain while having lunch.

Captain Cook was very impressed with the Glasshouse Mountains and named them on his journey up the Queensland coast in 1770 and you will be as well we think.

The view down is heady but the view out over the valley and surrounding mountains is spectacular.

Return to Ocean Beach

The Bribie Island Recreational Area reopened on the 2nd June after a two month closure to all but the Rangers and other workers.

An additional day pass requirement was implemented for the reopening to ensure no overcrowding occurred in the area which can be obtained free at the Department of Environment and Science website. This is on top of your paid access permit.

Heading up the inland track that day we discovered the area had enjoyed the break from constant tourists with natural sand formations everywhere.

The local kangaroos had overtaken Poverty Point camping area as their own and pine tree seedlings littered the sand between the wheel ruts.

The natural beauty of the area is great to revisit including scrub, pine plantations, swampy marshes and rain forest areas on the 20km track. The inside of the island to the north holds the remains of a lighthouse with local picnic areas and facilities before the track spits you out onto Ocean Beach.

A quick turn north to the WW2 bunkers and gun emplacements shows you how close you are to Caloundra looking north. Drift wood, shells and washed up fishing ropes and floats can be found on the pristine beach along with footprints from the enormous Roos that live behind the dunes.

The trip back to Woorim along the 20km stretch of beach takes you past four natural fresh water lakes behind the dunes which have now resealed after breaking through the beach pouring tannin tea coloured water in to the ocean earlier this year.

Moreton Island becomes bigger in your view to the left and the calm waters on a westerly winters day makes a picture perfect way to spend a day in the Queensland sun. On a clear day you can see the sand dunes which denote the location of Tangalooma across Moreton Bay and watch the progress of yachts and cargo ships in the channel on their way in and out of the Port of Brisbane.

The Sea Eagle family of five swoop overhead and into the sea to catch a feed and the Seagulls cruise alongside vehicles in a show of speed. Tiny Sand Crabs and large Pandanus trees enjoy and protect the dunes and the burned out bush land behind the dunes to your right are a stark contrast to the blue sky and sea.

Nothing left behind but tracks the beach gives way to the track past the Primary Industries facility to the car park at Woorim where it’s time to reinflate your tyres and try a pie up the road or drop in to a cafe for coffee and cake.

This is a unique experience for islanders and day trippers alike in an environment we need to respect to enjoy, let’s hope this is always the case.

The local mullet fishery has been vital to Bribie Island; so much so, that there used to be an annual mullet festival, complete with the Bribie Mullet Queen.

It is still an important industry – good for the local economy and a lucrative export product.

Fishing from Red Beach itself has been a frustrating exercise over the past couple of weeks, but there are some decent winter whiting for the taking.

While you’re at Red Beach, you might come across some 4wds and boats parked up on the sand. They belong to the local mullet fishermen – hardy fellows who spend hours on the beach each winter’s day, watching and waiting, then hauling nets in, full of mullet.

Interestingly, there have been quite a few reports of mackerel catches in the Passage – we’ve seen a few brought in, between 50-60cm. The bridge and the Ripples are the two spots we’ve heard of.

The bigger bream are fussy eaters at this time of year, and they have been hard to find. Grassy sweetlip are around the bridge and just north of it.

AUSTRALIA, EAST COAST – BRISBANE BAR

As the wind has been changing from east to west, the best fishing has swung from one side of the Passage to the other. There have been some impressive Venus tusk-fish caught near Turner’s Camp, but Elijah found his 35cm tuskfish on the Bribie side of the Passage, using prawns for bait. There have been plenty of them, particularly at or near the top of the tide, on a light wind. The next new moon, in mid-July, should be the time for targeting this excellent table-fish, even if it is almost too pretty to eat! Try some mullet fillet on a smallish hook, with a nice strong leader.

There has been a continuation last month’s run of flounder. They are being caught on all of the sandbanks, north and south of the bridge, usually keeping company with flathead. A few good mud flatheads have been coming in, but mainly sand and bar-tailed flathead, which need only to be 30cm. One muddie, 65cm long, was caught (and released) at Turner’s Camp recently – some good technique was required, because it was just a light rig and only 6lb line. Chris and Tondra also did well in the same spot last weekend, with a 50cm flathead. They also caught a 1metre+ shovelnose shark, so it made the cool, windy day out, worthwhile.

Lures are having less success of late, probably because of the water clarity, but casting in towards the mangroves on a rising tide is still doing the trick.

Almost all our rain has fallen during the night over the past month and has never been enough to muddy the brilliant water clarity. Cool mornings and early afternoon sea breezes have made for very pleasant fishing days.

The real snapper season in the Passage is from June to October, and our first good-sized snapper was brought in on June 1st. A lot of mainly undersize snapper live in the Passage all year round but in winter bigger snapper move in and can make life much more interesting. One of the most popular snapper spots is just outside the Pacific Harbour canals, which is on Bribie, 2km north of the bridge. Situated directly at the mouth of Pacific Harbour is the famous area called The Ripples.

Early in the morning, especially over the top of the tide, it is common to see locals anchor up around the Ripples.

It is very easy to find when the tide is moving as the water takes on a rough surface appearance - look for the area of “corrugated” water, hence its name, The Ripples. It is here that snapper congregate over winter. Throwing a lure or bait in when you see them chasing baitfish up to the surface often results in a good hook-up.
