Welcome to issue 51, one of the biggest questions in Queensland is “should our state boarders stay closed or should they be opened up to allow our essential hospitality and tourism industry start to recover also in this pandemic?”

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk is adamant that our boarders stay shut till possibly September from the advice of the Queensland chief health officer Jeannette Young.

Do we need to get our economy moving now before it’s too late?

Does the cost to our economy outweigh our current COVID 19 infection rate?

Is COVID-19 transmission currently out of control?

Dear Editor, Since the release of this Media Release on 13th May, it is estimated that the total run down of Super Balances of self-funded retirees have taken a bigger hit than indicated below. The stock market drop, the lack of Bank interest or Bank dividends or income from other commercial investments such as commercial property have taken a bigger toll. Eg. One property fund used to distribute approximately $700 a quarter – just received $10 for the last quarter!!!!!! The drop is at least 30 to 35% in total at present. This is crucial as we have to take a specified amount from our super funds each year depending on the balance as at 30th June the previous year. The government has now told us that we can take half the prescribed amount rather than the full 5, 6 or 7% (depending on age etc). Yet they seem to be oblivious to the fact that we have to take this money out of very different number compared with 30th June 2019. In addition, they expect us to live on half the income to pay our bills and put food on the table. On June 30th 2020 the number will be even much less and then we have to withdraw money to live from that low number.

No help at all, The Federal Government ignores us, the Councils ignore us (but give discounts to government pensioners who have already received $1500 for no reason at all and will receive another $1500 by the end of July) and only the State Government has said that they will give us $100 as a rebate with water and power.

I believe this document provides authenticity to the plight we are in. I have written to the P:M, Treasurer, and the local member. Not received any response from the top two but the local member called it just a “Paper Loss”.

Like hell. I have since written to him and explained further.

Please publish this asap as we need to assistance. Not every self-funded retiree has money to spare or anything near the maximum of 1.6m allowed by the Government. I for one is well below that but do not qualify even for my monthly medication prescriptions.

Mark Schrader REPLY BACK Dear Mark When I contacted the Federal Member for Longman for a reply, his office issued the following statement.

“I fully understand the concerns our self-funded retirees face and I have been lobbying for them with the National Cabinet since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

I have expressed and communicated my concerns with both the Prime Minister and the Treasurer directly, along with continuously raising the issues on a weekly basis through teleconference calls and emails.

I will continue to fight for self-funded retirees and their right to protect and keep more of their nest eggs.

My comment about a “paper loss” was a finance term in reference to someone who decided to sell assets while the market was low and I am in no way

suggesting that some self-funded retirees are not hurting like many of those in the community.

As I am not directly involved with discussions at a Cabinet Minister level, as I am not a Minister, but I do know they have been discussing every cohort in society and finding solutions for as many Australians as possible.

As a government we have reduced deeming rates by .75, we are encouraging self funded retirees to be retested financially as they may now be eligible for the 2 x $750 payments they previously were not eligible for.

Some self-funded retirees may also be eligible for the pension loan scheme if they are over 66 even if they are not a pensioner.”

The Editor does apologise, this missed issue 50 and relates to issue 49 Cranky Lizard.

Cranky Lizard you are at it again and just for once I thought I would agree but alas... “Globalism as it has been conducted is over”, in this case the Lizard was referring to oil. There is one small problem with this concept.

“Wood Mackenzie currently estimates Australia's commercial reserves at 2.0 billion barrels of oil and condensate, and 49.5 trillion cubic feet of gas. At current rates of consumption this equates to nine years of liquids reserves and 38 years for gas reserves.”

It would take Five years to build a Nuclear Power Plant but where would it be built? Why not Bribie Island? OK maybe not Bribie Island but we could bury the spent fuel rods here. Maybe “green lawfare” is about to break out on Bribie Island?

Remarks for Cranky Lizard from issue 50 - I would be pleased if you could pass on to him that his piece in Issue # 50 was 99% on the mark.

Dear Editor, I certainly agree with Harvey that we should buy Australian, and I do as much as possible, except for one item - rice. We should not be growing rice on the driest inhabited continent in the world, especially when there is a glut elsewhere.

As for value adding to cotton, I recall from school that Manchester became the world’s cotton capital because of its climate. Does Australia have a suitably miserable one anywhere?

This game sold 8500 units last year, and orders have been placed for at least that number again for 2020.

Can be made as mild or as hot as you like!

INGREDIENTS • 1 1/2 tablespoons grainy mustard • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground turmeric • 1/2–1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 teaspoon red wine vinegar • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 small onion (about 4 ounces), peeled and cut into fine half rings • 6 large cloves garlic, peeled and crushed to a pulp • 500g pork cut into 1-inch cubes • 1 cup canned coconut milk, well stirred METHOD Combine the mustard, cumin, turmeric, cayenne, salt, and vinegar in a cup. Mix well.

Put the oil in a large, non-stick frying pan and set over medium-high heat.

When the oil is hot, put in the onion.

Stir and fry until it is medium brown.

Put in the garlic. Stir and fry for 30 seconds.

Put in the spice paste. Stir and fry for a minute.

Put in the meat. Stir and fry for about 3 minutes.

Then add the coconut milk and 1 cup water. Cover and bring to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer and cook for 60 to 70 minutes.

Serve with rice or naan bread.

2020 has taken a turn that none of us could have ever expected. In light of the global health pandemic, most of Australia and the world has been locked up inside. We have endeavoured to find different forms of entertainments, as we stayed home in a continued effort to flatten the curve. And whilst it is not time to become complacent, we have seen much success from our swift reactions. Around a week ago we were delivered the news that restrictions had begun to lighten. Whilst we are still required to socially distance ourselves, Australians have been encouraged to get some fresh air and enjoy a picnic. This time last year the freedom to have a picnic is one that would have been taken for granted. With international picnic day fast approaching, on July 18th, it provides us with the perfect opportunity to enjoy the lovely surrounds of Bribie Island. Furthermore, our newly founded ‘freedom’ gives us yet another opportunity to support local businesses who are struggling during this difficult time. We are lucky enough to be surrounded by a number of local businesses, who provide beautiful food.

With cafes and restaurants offering takeaway services, it makes having a

picnic all that easier, whilst assisting those facing future economic hardships.

It is through times of crisis that we must acknowledge our lucky circumstances, our lovely country, and environment. It is only through our continued support that we are able to provide businesses with the stability they so greatly need and convey our gratitude to those sacrificing their time, and in some cases health, to finding a way out. Whilst everyone is encouraged to get outside, exercise and layout a picnic rug- it remains incredibly important that we continue to socially distance for the sake of our dedicated healthcare workers. We may be able to enjoy the sun, but there are still many nurses, doctors, specialist and scientists who are working tirelessly to create a vaccination and ensure the health of citizens across Australia. Now comes the recovery, where we support out local businesses, spread awareness on social media and encourage community spirit. Never has the 18th of July been so important to rebuilding morale and hope within society. So, pack up some sandwiches, a blanket, hand sanitiser and prepare to enjoy a change of scenery as we once again begin to enjoy the beautiful Bribie Island.

A people’s weekend to boost tourism This Year’s Ekka Show Holiday will move to create a one-off long weekend giving locals the chance for a minibreak and our tourism industry a much-needed boost.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced that, for this year only, People’s Day will become the People’s Long Weekend moving from Wednesday August 12 to Friday August 14.

Minister Grace said the same changes to show holidays could apply to other local government regions, if councils were wanting to make that shift.

“This is a great win for the tourism industry,” Ms Jones said.

“If any councils wish to change or postpone their nominated Show Holiday to a later date because of COVID 19, I encourage them to write to the me with that request.

RNA President David Thomas said organisers are happy to surrender the Show Holiday – just this once.

“Since we can’t have the Ekka as we

“Since that can’t happen this year, this gives the city the chance to go to bush – or the beach – have break and let Queenslanders support Queenslanders in our wonderful tourism industry.”

“We’re urging families to take advantage of the long weekend – get out of the house and support local businesses.”

Queenslanders are now able to undertake unlimited travel including overnight stays throughout the entire state since midday June 1, in a major easing of Covid-19 restrictions.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the easing of intrastate travel restrictions – by road, rail and air within Queensland – would come well in time for the next school holidays and would significantly kick-start the state’s tourism industry which had experienced an unprecedented downturn under strict but necessary Coronavirus restrictions.

Under the updated plan, there will also be a further easing of restrictions at pubs, cafes and restaurants.

“From the Gold Coast to Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast to Gympie to Maryborough to Bundaberg, from Longreach to Mt Isa, to Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, Queenslanders will now be able to rediscover their state, travelling for as many nights as they like.

“This will go a long way toward giving our critical tourism industry a welcome boost after adhering to the necessary restrictions we were forced to impose and I encourage Queenslanders to take advantage of the easing of rules around intrastate travel.”

The Premier stressed the easing of restrictions does not apply to biosecurity or restricted zones for indigenous communities which will remain in place subject to a review in consultation with community members.

Deputy Premier and Health Minister Steven Miles today also announced pubs,

“It was obviously a difficult decision for the RNA to cancel this year’s Ekka, only the third time in its 144-year history.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones encouraged families to take advantage of the new long weekend and support Queensland tourism businesses.

“While some venues will need time to prepare, the confirmation of these changes will give many the confidence to re-open for dining in or to increase the number of patrons – creating more jobs.

“I ask that people be patient as businesses get ready for this new stage and understand that staff are doing their best to help you enjoy more activities and keep safe.

“The same restrictions will apply to gyms and other health clubs, parks, museums and art galleries, in churches and places of worship and other public facilities such as libraries.

“In relation to community sporting events where clubs have more than one field, limits of 20 spectators per field will apply.

“The Government will work with bodies still subject to restrictions around preparing COVID Safe Industry Plans.”

Road safety grant applications now open Sunshine Coast schools, councils, community groups and not-for-profit organisations are being encouraged to apply for a 2020 Community Road Safety Grant.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said applications for the State Government-funded scheme have now opened.

"Road safety will remain critically important as our communities start to rebuild after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed,� Mr Bailey said.

"Successful initiatives through this scheme have saved lives and raised awareness road safety is the responsibility of all Queenslanders.

Mr Bailey said community groups could apply for up to $20,000 for road safety initiatives to address issues in their local area.

"Since 2013, more than $20 million has been awarded through the grants scheme to 375 projects across the state – including many on the Sunshine Coast," he said.

“Last year alone four community groups on the Sunshine Coast shared nearly $50,000 to improve road safety in the region.

"No one knows grassroots community

issues better than local groups, schools and the council and I’d encourage them to apply for a grant before 31 July�.

Mr Bailey said the scheme had previously funded road safety education, resources and training, learner driver mentor programs, bike education, child restraint information and heavy vehicle fatigue management.

"The State Government is proud to launch the 2020 grants scheme, which is another way we can support Queenslanders during this difficult period."

"The 2020 funding round also marks the launch of updated guidelines which are designed to streamline the way organisations can apply for a grant.�

Rural fire brigade volunteers who have so far not applied for blue cards have also been warned that they will be sacked if they do not apply within 30 days – even though the backburning season is about to begin in much of Queensland (see attached letter).

LNP Shadow Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Lachlan Millar said the looming mass sacking was just the latest example of the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s appalling treatment of rural firies. “For the Palaszczuk Labor Government to be sending out termination letters to rural fire volunteers because Labor have botched their blue card process is a farce,� Mr Millar said. “It is an absolute disgrace that those volunteers, who have stood on the frontline defending their communities,

are being kicked out over paperwork. “A mass exodus of thousands of rural fire brigade volunteers is happening right now and it must be stopped. “Queensland can’t afford to have thousands of rural firies walk away. “The fact that some regions will be losing half their brigade members right before fire season is alarming. “Community safety is important, but the blue card requirement process demanded by Annastacia Palaszczuk has been bungled from day one. “It’s time for Annastacia Palaszczuk to fix this mess before it’s too late. “The LNP will never unfairly sack our valuable and hardworking rural firefighters who sacrifice so much to keep their communities safe. “We need our rural fire volunteers now more than ever for the upcoming bushfire season. “Labor’s arrogant behaviour is putting our communities at risk.�

The Palaszczuk Government has welcomed $5 million in Commonwealth funding to help address domestic and family violence (DFV) during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the funding would assist the Palaszczuk Government provide even more support to the most vulnerable in our community. “The new National Partnership on COVID-19 Domestic and Family Violence Response delivers up to $130 million to the states and territories from the Commonwealth to boost domestic and family violence assistance during COVID-19,� Ms Farmer said. “This Commonwealth funding complements the Palaszczuk Government’s $7.5 million package to meet increased demand for family violence assistance across Queensland.�

Following agreement by the Council of Australian Government (COAG) Women’s Safety Council about national priorities, states and territories have received their first payment.

Queensland has received a first payment of $5 million for 2019-20. “This will be of tremendous benefit to Queensland’s Government funded, notfor-profit organisations who are working proactively to help those in need,� Ms Farmer said. “We have listened to stakeholders and taken onboard feedback from the recent virtual DFV COVID-19 Summit about how to distribute this additional funding for maximum benefit.�

Federal Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston said the funding boost to Queensland formed part of the Australian Government’s $150 million domestic violence response package to deal with the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

“Our priority is ensuring people experiencing family and domestic violence reach out for support and that they are able to access it as quickly as possible despite the crisis,�

Minister Ruston said. “We will continue to work closely with states and territories over the next six months to allocate a the remaining funding to where it is most needed.�

The breakdown of the Commonwealth’s $5 million in funding includes: $2.7 million for domestic and family violence workers in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Wellbeing Services across the state to provide additional capacity to respond to demand pressures during the pandemic; $820,000 to enhance the capacity of existing Family and Child Connect family support services to respond to the increased needs of families affected by DFV; $824,000 to further enhance crisis and postcrisis accommodation and support to those affected by domestic and family violence; $546,000 for existing services to help women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, especially those on temporary visas, with crisis accommodation and other support services, and $50,000 to enhance a project with Tenants Qld to provide support to DFV services regarding tenants’ rights under COVID-19 measures to support access to safe, supported accommodation.

Ms Farmer said the Women’s Safety Council had also agreed to allocate a further $4.7 million to states and territories. “A further $29.3 million in 2020-21 is to be allocated to states and territories to support service providers and help with future planning,� Ms Farmer said “We are giving careful consideration to how best to use our share of this additional funding to assist those in need.�

Bribie Respite and Support Services response to COVID-19

Thank you to our clients, parents, carers, volunteers and staff for your support through this difficult time.

Our clients, carers, parents and volunteers are of the greatest importance to the team at Bribie Respite and Services. Our team is doinag everything possible to support every one of our clients, carers and parents through this difficult time.

Due to the Government regulations implemented to manage COVID-19, we have changed our service model from an onsite day respite and learning centre to providing one-on-one flexible in-home support: for our CHSP (Commonweath Home Support Programme) and NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) clients.

These services align individual staff with a specific group of no more than two clients. This style of support is designed to reduce the potential risk of infection to clients, carers, parents and staff. All our staff have completed Department of Health recommended COVID 19 training and are practicing social distancing at all times and social isolation practises when not providing support services. All staff are monitoring their temperatures and the general wellbeing of each other each day.

• Our team is vigilant with the practice of social distancing within our office spaces and discouraging visitors to our facility.

• We have closed Bribie Island Community Hall activities until April 30th 2020 with this date to be reviewed.

• Our team is making regular contact with each of our clients, parents and carers to chat, check on their well-being, explain our processes and answer any questions.

As a team we are continuing to provide ongoing support to our clients, parents and carers whilst complying with the ever changing government regulations.

We are all here to support our local community, you do not need to be a current client, parent or carer to contact us. We are here to help all older Australians, Young People with Disability and their families living in our Bribie Island and Surrounding community at all times but especially now.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the change will better align Queensland to the special arrangements recently announced by the Commonwealth Government, that allow supply of PBS medicines through a digital image.

“We have made the necessary regulatory changes so that vulnerable people can have their medicines prescribed by their usual doctor and dispensed and delivered by their usual pharmacy without having to leave their home,” Deputy Premier Miles said.

“This provides Queenslanders more options so they can receive the care they need and reduce the need to leave the house and sit in a waiting room alongside other patients.

“Digital image scripts will allow Queenslanders to visit their usual pharmacy or get medications delivered to their home. This helps to ensure we can keep our community safer particularly those more likely to develop a severe coronavirus infection.

“Telehealth consultations delivered

by Queensland Health clinicians have increased during the COVID-19 response.

“These patients will now have their prescription flow handled by modern technology as the old-school fax

and follow-up between doctors and pharmacies is replaced by digital copies of prescriptions sent by a choice of modern communication streams.

Deputy Premier Miles said the changes to regulations removed a barrier to bringing Queensland into line with recent Commonwealth special arrangements designed to facilitate the flow of prescriptions between doctors and pharmacists.

“The changes will allow digital images of prescriptions to be sent and dispensed for PBS or private prescriptions, and applies to prescriptions sent by all prescribers.

“Although digital prescriptions are now available, the existing prescription process will stay intact for those still wishing to process their prescriptions as they’ve always done.”

The digital prescription changes will remain in place until the end of September this year, allowing time to further develop technological changes to the prescription process.

“Queensland Health is currently working on ensuring the existing medicines and poisons legislation continues to support patients and health practitioners during the COVID-19 response,” he said.

“Progressing the regulatory changes to allow prescribers to send digital prescriptions directly to pharmacists is part of these efforts.”

Programs are offered outside of traditional service hours (weeknights and weekends) so that you can enjoy a variety of experiences, events and social opportunities.

Senior Gentle Exercises With A Ball (or cushion) Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.confident and secure.

The exercises below are done using a small light ball or a Cushion Take each exercise slowly and carefully If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

BALL TRICEP EXTENSIONS

Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit tall in your chair and raise the ball straight above your head Keeping your arms up, bend your elbows as you lower the ball behind your head. Then slowly raise the ball until it’s back to its original position above your head Only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

BALL LEG SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall and keep your feet comfortable apart Place the ball or pillow between your knees Using your knees, squeeze the ball for 6 seconds and then slowly release (but don’t let the ball fall). Repeat slowly, only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

BALL BACK REACH

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Slowly stretch your arms forward to move the ball away from you like you are handing the ball to someone. You will feel a stretch across your upper back Return to the starting position. Repeat slowly reaching out only as many times as is comfortable for you doing up to 12. Rest

BALL ARM AND CHEST SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Hold the ball in front of your chest with your elbows pointed straight out. Squeeze the ball between your hands. Keep squeezing for about 6 seconds and then relax Repeat slowly only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 12. Rest

State LNP Lobbied for small business grants in Queensland, and it worked!

LNP State Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, has thanked the thousands of Queenslanders who signed the LNP's petition calling for the Queensland State Government to provide COVID-19 small business grants to help businesses stay alive and recover through this tough time.

“I’m pleased that with the support of Queenslanders we have had a win with the Palaszczuk Labor Government's announcement today that $10,000 adaption grants will be made available for small business”, Simone said.

Simone said Queensland was the only state where small businesses were not provided with emergency assistance grants by their State Government, with financial assistance to adapt so vital for so many to survive and reopen their doors as COVID-19 restrictions start to lift.

“Quite frankly it was embarrassing that Queensland was the only State that did not have a small business grant program

in the face of this pandemic.

“It was the LNP who stood up to Annastacia Palaszczuk and her Government urging them to value our small businesses and provide a helping hand when the going gets tough,” Simone said.

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government was put under pressure to deliver for small businesses but this should have been their priority from the get go.

“The worry faced by so many small business owners could have been eased much sooner had the Palaszczuk Labor Government made them a priority like other *States have.

“There are more than 438,000 small businesses in Queensland, including thousands right here in Pumicestone, and they are doing it tough right now.

“That is why we started a petition and today we had a win”, Simone said.

*New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia had introduced direct grants of between $10,000 – $17,500 for small businesses.

No doubt everyone has heard about the jobkeeper payment, but enrolment is vital if you qualify.

Firstly, your business downturn must be >30%, calculated against last year.

It is especially relevant for sole traders, partnerships, and trusts. At this point I am not considering those businesses with employees.

Enroling online through your MYGOV account, your MYGOVID (if previously registered with the portal) or through our office are your choices. A sole trader registers as a sole trader, a partnership can only register one partner, and a trust can only register one beneficiary.

The steps are:

Work out that you are an eligible entity – carried on a business on 1 March 2020 in Australia, satisfy the fall in turnover, have an ABN as at 12 March 2020 and had lodged a Tax Return for 18/19 or BAS after 1 July 2018 showing income.

Ensure the entity has an eligible business participant. This cannot be an employee. The participant must be actively engaged in the business @ 1 March 2020, aged 16+ and be an Australian resident.

There are so many things to organise and consider when applying for your first home loan, an investment home loan or refinancing your existing home loan. Today we will share three key things that you should be aware of when looking for a loan.

2.Loan to Value Ratio (LVR) is how much you borrow compared to the value of the securedasset. In most circumstances this will be your home.

Generally, the lower the LVR the better the interest rate.This is because it is less of a risk to your lender being able to recoup their costs if you default on the loan. If your LVR is greater than 80% you are normally required to take out Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) which protects the banks from you defaulting on your loan. This can equate to just over 3% of the cost of your home loan.

Virtual summit explores domestic and family violence victims’ safety during COVID-19

Tackling domestic and family violence in the COVID-19 pandemic was the focus of Australia’s first COVID-19 Domestic and Family Violence Virtual Summit on May 6th, with frontline service providers and sector experts helping the state government to chart a path forward.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said participants explored options to continue to support people experiencing domestic and family violence and deliver essential services within the new reality of the Coronavirus.

“The global COVID-19 crisis is unprecedented, leaving many people feeling isolated and it is essential that people experiencing domestic and family violence know how to access support at this time,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“Home is not a safe haven for every Queenslander and today’s summit was an opportunity to hear from the experts in their fields on what they are confronted with and their advice on how to keep Queenslanders experiencing domestic and family violence safe.

“We have heard from a range of service providers on issues like housing, perpetrator interventions and the impacts for children, and they have drilled down more intensively to together develop practical actions to deal with these issues in the present climate.”

The Premier also announced that a further $2 million would be made available for domestic and family violence service providers to cope with increased demand and costs – in addition to a funding boost of $5.5 million announced in April.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said that while today’s summit was centre stage, it formed part of a series of conversations taking place on domestic and family violence.

“We have held three forums in the lead up to today’s summit with representatives of the LGBTIQ+ community, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” she said “We will also be talking to representatives of organisations who work in the areas of sexual violence,

disabilities and the corporate and community sector in the coming weeks and importantly with domestic and family violence survivors.

“I am very excited about the ideas and solutions put forward today and am looking forward to making further announcements to help push back against the perfect storm environment created by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Long-time domestic violence prevention advocate and Co-Chair of the Queensland Government’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Council Kay McGrath chaired today’s summit and said it played an important part in hearing the voices of those on the frontline in these unprecedented times.

“Today’s summit provided a valuable opportunity to recognise the impacts of increased isolation on domestic and family violence victims and identify how we shape services for now and the future,” Ms McGrath said.

“I was impressed with the spirit of cooperation and the willingness to take on board each other’s thoughts and ideas around how we can work together to best support those who are facing domestic and family violence.”

Minister Farmer said the summit demonstrated how people could adapt through technology when faced with a starkly different landscape in which to operate. She thanked Telstra, Cisco and Taleka for their support to ensure stakeholders from across Queensland could participate.

General Manager of Queensland Government business Gaven Nicholls said Telstra was proud to be part of the summit and provide the technological support for such an important event.

“Telstra is committed to making a positive difference in the community for survivors of domestic and family violence, particularly through our Telstra Safe Connections Program,” Mr Nicholls said.

Minister Farmer thanked the more than 120 summit participants and reassured them that the government would continue to not only listen but also act to support them.

“We are boosting support for essential government-funded services, so people have somewhere to turn to access the help they need,” she said.

“Most importantly I want those Queenslanders and their families who find themselves in abusive situations to understand and know that they can reach out for help.”

Food distributed depends on what OzHarvest has been able to collect from food venues locally and types and amounts vary from week to week.

We also receive assistance from local church groups and community groups for this service.

Unfortunately, our Bargain Shop is closed and we are unable to take donations at present. To assist people in crisis, we are still accepting blankets, jumpers and track suits, sleeping bags and that small tent (that still has all its parts and you never use) that you have taking up space in your garage.

The Neighbourhood Centre is funded by the Queensland Government’s Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors. Our Emergency Relief Service and our Family Relationship Service are funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Department of Social Services.

Bongaree seawall present condition For more than 30 years she’s protected the Bongaree shoreline from erosion and inundation, now she’s getting a welldeserved facelift.

Moreton Bay Region Mayor Peter Flannery said $950,000 of repair works on a deteriorating section of the Welsby Parade seawall will begin in late May.

“Bongaree is a favourite regional beach destination for many locals and tourists, so it’s our priority to ensure the area can be enjoyed for generations to come,” Cr Flannery said.

“This project involves extending and deepening the concrete foundation, supporting that foundation with underground sheeting, repairing the existing seawall, replenishing sand and improving drainage.

“Welsby Parade was identified as needing the highest priority of repairs, with the remaining section of the Bongaree seawall to be scheduled for works in the future.”

The damaged section is roughly 575 metres long and repair works will see up to 10 people on the job for a period of approximately 12 weeks, weather permitting.

Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige said the investment would be welcomed by locals.

“Beaches are synonymous with the image and lifestyle of Bribie Island, so this is an important investment in our amenities and future,” she said.

“The seawall was built back in the early 1980s to protect the foreshore parkland from wave erosion and the concrete has naturally deteriorated over that time.

“I want to thank our Coastal Planning team for making these repairs to the seawall along Welsby Parade a priority.”

Repairs to this seawall were identified by the Southern Pumicestone Passage Shoreline Erosion Management Plan that Council uses to prioritise its coastal public infrastructure works.

Doors open for seniors following the latest health advice Older Queenslanders can now leave their homes to reconnect with family, friends and their communities following the latest expert COVID-19 health advice.

Minister for Seniors Coralee O'Rourke said restrictions had been particularly challenging for older Queenslanders in order to protect them from the virus.

“We know it’s been difficult for older people to stay home for the past few months, and I know many seniors have missed spending time with their families, friends and loved ones,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The Chief Health Officer (CHO) on Wednesday briefed the Seniors Taskforce and advised that due to the consistently low rates of infection in our state, it is now time for seniors to leave their homes and start going back to the things they enjoy.

“We strongly encourage seniors to protect themselves and leave their homes in a careful and considered way.

“For example, visit children and grandchildren who are well in small groups and avoid shopping centres and other public places during peak periods when crowds are bigger.

“The CHO reiterated that it’s incredibly important for seniors to continue to follow all health advice – get a flu vaccination, wash your hands and use hand sanitiser regularly and ensure you keep at least 1.5 metres away from other people.”

All Queenslanders, including seniors, should stay home if they’re sick. Anyone with COVID-19 symptoms should contact their doctor and arrange to get tested.

Mrs O’Rourke said seniors had done an amazing job to stay home and take the necessary precautions over recent weeks.

“Older Queenslanders have told us that they have had a helping hand from family members, friends, neighbours, and in some instances the Care Army,” she said.

“These people have delivered food and medications, helped connect older Queenslanders with technology and called and video-chatted with seniors to make sure they are ok.

“Spending weeks on end at home can lead to social isolation so it’s great that seniors can now safely leave their homes and reconnect with family, friends and their communities.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Emergency Services and Volunteers Lachlan Millar demanded that the Palaszczuk Labor Government come clean on its intentions on the future of marine rescue groups in Queensland.

“Marine rescue groups and organisations engaged with the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s Blue Water Review in good faith, but unfortunately this has all gone sour,” Mr Millar said.

“Members right up and down the coast have been inundated with marine rescue volunteers frustrated with the lack of direction and action on the muchneeded reform.

"Queensland's volunteer marine rescuers are doing their best to protect the communities they serve, and they deserve to know what their future looks like.

Cranky Lizard Speaks A STATE GOVERNMENT WITH THE 'SPEED WOBBLES'

Cranky Lizard believes that no political party should gain any advantage, or bear any loss from comments made in these articles. It should, however, be

evident that Cranky Lizard is repelled by the softcore political pornography of socialism, which is Communism's underhanded, grubby and soiled cousin; and that has been said often enough on these pages.

No surprises there! So if socialist political parties are offended by Cranky Lizard's words…. c'est la vie!

Cranky Lizard comments and expresses opinions on political events and social trends that are available for all to see. Cranky Lizard also knows, and expects, that there will be many who will disagree with the expressed opinions, some will even be outraged, others will make sensible and critical comments, and others won't even be interested, or they will act like a startled squid and hide behind a cloud of black ink …and that is all OK! Cranky Lizard has written similar words on previous occasions. They are worth repeating.

Queensland is one of the large states, by landmass, in the Commonwealth of Australia, and it has a robust economy which is driven by mining, agriculture and tourism. Queensland is a state rich in natural resources and, in general terms, this serves the citizens of Queensland well.

And, again, in general terms, Queensland has been adequately served by its elected State Governments – for the majority of the last thirty years usually formed by the Australian Labor Party.

No criticism of this that is the way that the political cookie has crumbled.

It is, however, an iron rule of politics that the longer your party forms the Government, the more vulnerable you become to electoral defeat. Simply because the electorate becomes tired of your faces, your policies become arrogant and self-serving, you become beholden to substantial vested interests and factions within your political spectrum. They will dictate your Ministry, whether you like it or not because your time in Government has become symbiotic with their continuing support.

All this causes angst, infighting, internecine brawling and, eventually, incompetence in delivering sensible Government.

South West and the North; spectacular tourism on the sun-drenched beaches of the Eastern Coastline all the way North to the tropical city of Cairns and a buzzing hub of activity centred around the large regional cities and the State capital related to distribution, logistics, the arts and administration.

Layered upon Brisbane is a cosmopolitan sub-culture obsessed with its importance and its politics of climate alarmism, anti-mining, anti-tourism and anti-development and it carries far more weight with the current State Government than it sensibly should -but that is the reality of politics!

Any casual observer can see that regional issues dominate all politics in Queensland – always has, and herein lurks an exquisite problem for the current state Labor Government.

To deal with issues such as mining, for example, they need to calm the ruffled feathers and stroke the sensitive egos of the cosmopolitan mob to prevent a green tide of primary votes in the crowded Brisbane electorates.

Cranky Lizard observes that all of this constant buzzing and fluttering is Government of appeasement -keeping all the various mobs and single-issue activists happy thereby hoping to keep their votes in State elections.

But, in Cranky Lizard's opinion, this is not State Government. State Government is accepting responsibility for the whole of the economy of the State, taking responsibility for all of the State's citizens and rising above the noise of the mob and providing leadership and certainty for all Queenslanders.

Right now, that is not happening. And Queensland Mining provides a huge royalty income for the State Government, an income and Queenslanders are the against which it can borrow vast sums of poorer because of it… money to fund its bloated public service and its obscure social engineering programmes, about which most of the electorate know very little. So the Government does not want to upset the miners; therefore, the delicate ballet of calming the greens and keeping the mining unions on side flutters on and on.

Modern labour governments are mystified by agriculture. They simply do not understand it at all, which is strange, considering that the reason why the labour movement came into existence in the first place was because of the injustices existing in the agricultural workforce. It seems as if they have not been able to move on from the mental image of the wealthy, cruel squatters crushing the workers in the district while making squillions of dollars from wool from merino sheep and beef meat from cattle.

Cranky Lizard points out that nothing, absolutely nothing could be further from the truth! Sheep farmers, cattle farmers, grain producers, fruit growers, market gardeners, winegrowers are certainly the hardest working and most vulnerable members of our economy.

The days of dinners by chandelier light each night in the squatter's mansion are long gone.

And we can see this in the huffing and puffing of the State Government.

These men and women are some of the best producers of food in the world – they can compete in any world market on price and quality of produce.

They work incredible hours under challenging circumstances, hostage to the vicissitudes of the climate – dealing with drought, wildfire and floods; often in succession.

And yet, the legislative obstacles placed on agriculture, in general, seems petty almost vindictive, in the opinion Cranky Lizard.

But having said all that, Cranky Lizard looks at which party has had Government of Queensland for the majority of the last thirty years, and it is the Labour Party.

So, they must be doing something right, because Queenslanders are not that stupid to keep voting for duds election after election!

And that, once again, in Cranky Lizard's opinion, this fact raises the question of the quality of the opposition parties at State level.

The issue of presenting the people of Queensland with an acceptable alternative to the current Government must be occupying the minds of the opposition parties in this State.

The current State Government is a Government with the speed wobbles, it has been in Government too long, and a political change is needed.

It is the responsibility of the Opposition to make sure that they give Queenslanders a reasonable alternative at the coming State Election.

Cranky Lizard is still waiting for the endorsed Labour Candidate in the forthcoming election to make clear the facts about the source of the information of the Bribie Island nuclear facility. It is all very well to make a claim – in public life, you must be able to back up that claim with facts. If you don't, or can't, then why should people vote for you?

The Minister for Child Safety Di Farmer today announced an independent investigation into the alleged neglect of three children last week in Brisbane.

Ms Farmer said she had asked for an investigation to be carried out by the Queensland Child and Family Commission following the death of a 4-year-old girl at Cannon Hill and the alleged neglect of two youths, 17 and 19 years at Stafford.

“I have been in contact with the Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath today to ask that this independent investigation start as quickly as possible,” Ms Farmer said.

“There is absolutely no excuse for the neglect of children in our community.

“I know the community wants answers about these two horrific events and so do I.

“We all need to know how these terrible incidents have happened.

“That’s why I have asked the AttorneyGeneral to ask the Commission for a comprehensive investigation.

“There’s no place for the abuse of children, and the penalties the courts can impose reflect that.

Trying to make sense from what we have seen and heard By now, many of you will be feeling what untold millions of ordinary people around the world must be feeling…a growing sense of anger at China.

We have seen the Chinese Government diplomats and their fellow travellers, angrily gesturing and shouting from various podiums around the globe about this vile disease, COVID-19.

At the time I am writing this, none of us knows just where this pestilence began and how it was allowed to consume our globe so quickly. We think we know because the media tells us that it started in a ‘ wet ‘ market in the Chinese City of Wuhan. But we don’t really know, and calls for a transparent enquiry have been met by the usual, predictable huffing and puffing, finger-pointing and bullying nonsense from the Chinese Communist Party.

I make it very clear that my comments refer to the Chinese Communist Party, which runs a dictatorship in China.

Hundreds of millions of Chinese people are not our enemies and have no chance to change their tyranny by the ballot box, because Communism does not allow free legislative elections.

Diplomatic reports gleaned from various Commonwealth websites indicate that there is no hostility towards Australia from the general population of China.

Most are unaware of what Australia is; others think it is an excellent place to live and some obviously will slavishly adhere to the party line – as all good Communists and their fellow travellers are wont to do!

The Chinese Government has become a substantial economic beast, driven by a man who seems determined to see his legacy surpass that of the old dictator himself, Mao Tse Dung. Xi Jinping has had himself appointed Chairman for Life, and I always wonder why is it so, that dictators of Communist and socialist regimes strive to achieve this goal?

Their lust for power is unquenchable: they project that power through economic muscles and substantial military forces.

At first glance, looking at China from an Australian viewpoint we see an economic giant that has no hesitation in using its’ power to punish us for daring to support an independent review into the origins of this vile disease.

Their global anger, thrashing out in Europe, threatening India, Taiwan, Hong Kong and th UK suggests some truth in the old saying “ Methinks thou dost protest too much “, indicating a curious level of guilt.

Within Australia, there is a level of political support for the Communist Government of China. There always has been, and it has its genesis in the socialist legacies of the old Australian Communist Party which have been absorbed by factions of the Australian Labor Party.

Australia seems almost powerless to combat this powerful presence on the global stage, but we have more going for us than is commonly accepted.

To begin with, Communist China cannot feed itself – it simply cannot do

that. Hence the continuous purchase,

by China, of prime agricultural land in Australia plus the staggering investment in water rights across the Australian mainland, again by Chinese owned companies. All this is in the name of food security for the communists.

Well, the communists can purchase the land, and their funds remain in Australia, as does the Earth and the water, we can, if we want to, nationalize all these entities and take them back!

Sure they would threaten us, they already are, but bullies are known for their capacity to threaten and then fade away when faced with determined resistance.

Australia does not stand alone in this region; we have the capacity and the diplomatic skills to form a quadrilateral arrangement with countries such as India, Japan, Singapore and the USA if necessary. These nations have strong economies, as do we, and substantial military presence in the region, as do we.

Many other nations in South East Asia, Indonesia being of substantial significance, are uncomfortable with the aggressive presence of the Chinese dragon and would be amenable to forming an alliance to counterbalance the Chinese threat.

In real terms, we have heard of the banning of the meat exports from Australian meat processors, one just up the road from us in Kilcoy, Southern Queensland. Interesting reports in the agricultural media indicate that all the processed beef meant for China has already found new markets in other parts of the globe, a clear signal to the Chinese that we are not just “ patsies “ to be pushed around at their will. We also know that their mates, in Cedar Meats in Victoria, that Southern haven of communist sympathizers, are flogging prime Australian beef to them as fast as they can!

News from the Australian Barley Board indicates that all barley crops sown in anticipation of sales to China, and a record harvest is expected in the large grain states, are already sold into other global markets; so not much pain there.

Of course, these punitive matters hurt us; we accept that. But we are not helpless, as the above lines indicate.

Perhaps the most significant hurt comes from within China itself, the Tsing Tsao Brewing Company, makers of delicious beer, use entirely Australian barley and have complained loudly about being deprived of a valuable quality product.

The Chinese will now have to drink beer made from fluffy barley from other global sources.

Many middle-class Chinese people have come to enjoy, and to look forward to Australian wines and beef – how far are the Communist willing to push their threats? Are they willing to face down millions of their own people? I think not!

These are but some examples of how, when faced with this kind of bullying nonsense, Australia can be proud of its agricultural products.

I note that the supply of top quality Australian iron ore still flows unimpeded, in vast quantities, from

Western Australia to China – no threats about disrupting the supply of this strategically critical raw material.

But, we could stop it – couldn’t we?

We could value add it by making it into steel, which the Chinese Communist Government could then purchase if we let them!

These are just some examples of what we, as Australians could do, in the face of Chinese Communist bullying.

We are not helpless.

We are a strong, determined nation with an international record, sustained by our Olympic and other sporting achievements, of being a fierce competitor.

they tried to hide it and failed, and they know that that they, by their deception, have visited misery, economic ruin and death to millions of human beings upon the Earth.

The Chinese Communists thoroughly deserve to be held to account over their gutless behaviour.

And, the Communist apparatchiks in Beijing are psychologically incapable of accepting that!

Hence their wild, erratic behaviour.

The dragon is sorely wounded; deservedly so!

An Introduction to the people of the Electorate of Pumicestone: In the Queensland State Parliament.

Subsequent to the voluntary retirement from politics at the next Queensland Election, of the current energetic and deeply involved Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, the Liberal National Party of Queensland have selected a talented and experienced woman, as their Candidate for the Seat of Pumicestone in the next Queensland State election, which is due in October this year.

Fiona Gaske and her family live on Bribie Island; her children are enrolled in local schools, and her husband is involved in private enterprise in South West Queensland.

Her training and experience in community health issues equip her with the skills to make a sensible and permanent contribution to Pumicestone Electorate in health matters. She has a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of Queensland and has a number of year’s experience in this field.

She brings to the Pumicestone electorate some hard-nosed and hard-won experience in Local Government having been elected to office in the Local Government Shire of Balonne in Western Queensland, centred around the inland town of St George on the banks of the Balonne River.

She has held the position as Deputy Mayor of the Shire for some time. Her role in Local Government included responsibility for road and associated infrastructure development, experience which will serve her, and the people of Pumicestone well, in developing much-needed roads and infrastructure in the electorate.

Fiona’s community health commitment is substantial. Her membership of the South West Queensland Hospital and Health Board provides her with broad and deep knowledge of health issues; many of which are vitally relevant for electorates such as Pumicestone, which has a fine balance of young families, middle and mature aged residents.

Moving to Bribie Island, for Fiona and her husband, was an attractive opportunity for the continuing education of their children who are now enrolled in local schools. The Gaske family live on the island and are a part of the local community.

Quite obviously, her rural experience has given her sound knowledge of sustainable development issues and broad community health issues.

Fiona’s experience and knowledge will be well used in supporting her electorate in the testing times ahead as Queensland generally, and Pumicestone specifically ,work to overcome the effects of the pandemic on our economy.

And, that is when experience counts.

For Fiona, life it is not all a one dimension plane. Alongside her substantial tertiary health qualifications rides a Bachelor of Music from Griffith University: she is a trained opera singer. She trained at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.

Fiona Gaske has reliable political experience. She can take that experience into the community and make it work for the benefit of those in need. She will be able to use her artistic qualifications and connections, to assist the community arts movement in the electorate which has over time, provided valuable artistic assets to the island community in particular, and the Pumicestone Electorate generally.

Fiona Gaske will bring eloquence coupled with experience to the Queensland State Parliament and a fierce determination to make a difference for the better, in the continuing story of the Pumicestone Electorate.

Gardening Plant of the Month Strelitzia parvifolia var. juncea with gratitude Welcome to the cusp of winter folks!

It has been a busy month for me, mostly due to the fact I had to catch up on a backload of work from a slight accident with a pair of extremely sharp secateurs. I am back on track and thanks for everyone’s patience indeed!

Well its good to see our local nurseries being able to keep up with the ongoing demand for vegetable seedlings, seeds, and necessary planting materials finally, as it has been quite a challenge for all, while we were all in lockdown from Covid 19. At one stage after building a new veggie garden for myself and finally being able to plant it out, I remember on one fine blue sky - sunny morning, I found myself looking at my new seedlings popping their heads up while I had a hot cup of coffee in one hand and my other hand bandaged up from my injury, I was just sitting in peace and watching and willing the plants to grow. I wonder if that is what the term used - “to watch the grass grow”- came from, a forced rest perhaps, or a time to smell the roses. There is no doubt that gardening is therapy for some, but perhaps just a chore for others, it can be the simple things in life that can give us the most pleasure. In autumn and winter in south east Queensland it’s great to be working outdoors!

I was out consulting with a client on their garden and plant health requirements last month and I was surprised to hear that they grew Bonsai plant displays. I was invited into their house and into their back yard where they had some beautiful examples of Bonsai, I felt so privileged. Thanks Gary and great meeting you both. Gary got into gardening and more specifically Bonsai after a medical issue a few years ago and he found the practice very therapeutic and extremely beneficial in his recovery, he and his wife are proud as punch of his achievement.

Real works of art! I can rattle off lots of people who are on my client list who like nothing more than to see a garden full of flowers, a green sward of lawn and the smell of fresh cut grass, it’s a little piece of nature that we can visit, sit and enjoy when we can, amongst the chaos

Strelitzia Spp, hail from South Africa and come in different shapes and sizes that distinguish them apart and come with a variety of striking flower colours of yellow, orange and white sepals and vibrant blue petals that protrude from the spathe (the canoe shaped modified leaf) to form the beautiful crane shaped- bird of paradise flower.

Strelitzia parvifolia var. juncea, commonly called the reed or rush Strelitzia, are one of my favourite Strelitzia’s as they are architecturally striking in shape with their long narrow reed like foliage. As Strelitzia parvifolia var. juncea- matures, the typical small paddles which are evident in the first stage of growth, (which are the characteristic shape of S. parvifolia) become less apparent and more rush or reed like, to which they get their common name.

The normal typical orange coloured full sized flowers poking out from the rushlike foliage are something to behold, there is a yellow and white flowering Juncea, but these can be hard to obtain. I love these plants planted with night lighting in a well-designed landscape garden. I use these strelitzia when I want to create that unusual landscape design or use them as spectacular potted specimens and I sometimes plant them among Xanthorrhoea species (grass trees) and Agave - for that spectacular architectural look. Strelitzia reginae, is the most common - bird of paradise plant in Australia but there are some smaller growing dwarf variants that only grow to 1 metre tall with orange and yellow flowers. One called Strelitzia reginae ‘Mandela’s Gold’, was named after- Nelson Mandela himself. These are hardy drought tolerant plants that are easy to grow, some like S. Juncea grow more slowly but all Strelitzia dislike frosts and waterlogging, so we are pretty right here on the coast! of our world around us. Sometimes I get so busy tending to other people’s gardens, whether that be hedging, mowing and using all sorts of motorised machinery its great to put the lot down and step away for a moment and watch the birds feeding on the flower nectar, or the bees enmasse milking the pollen and the butterflies hovering around that otherwise I would be in too much of a hurry to experience and enjoy.

So this winter, while the growth may slow with our lawns and some plants may go into semi dormancy there is still much to do and enjoy, it’s a great time for planting or transplanting or catching up on pruning and controlling weeds but whatever you decide, remember to take time to smell the roses! Growing veggies on a balcony Short of space? Cannot build a veggie garden at home or perhaps renting and just not feasible, well you can still grow veggies in a sunny spot in the court yard, balcony or deck, so long as it can get close to 6 hours of sunlight per day.

Some herbs may thrive in less sunlight conditions, but generally so long as they are protected from harsh winds and have their moisture requirements kept up, then you may still have a bountiful kitchen harvest. media is a prerequisite for successful growing. You can buy coir fibre made from coconut husks and these can be purchased in blocks, bricks, or pressed into jiffy pots, compostable fibre pots and planting trays. The compostable germination pots can be planted straight out into your planting area which may prevent any transplant shock. The coir blocks can be pulled apart and mixed in with your potting mix to add some extra water holding capacity to your medium.

I personally like the planter bag options, available on the market as these have handles on them and you can easily move them around your balcony to capture extra sunlight if needed. You can place them on a tray to catch any water runoff or place them inside a bigger pot for aesthetics. These are what the professional growers use to pot up their larger citrus trees at their nursery.

There are also special planter bags for specifically growing of potatoes, which have Velcro trap doors on the side so you can easily access your spuds upon harvest time. Also, now available are the modern looking, wire tomato trellises, ready to insert over your potted plants to make life easier for those who need to maximise their room but don’t want to deal with large cumbersome wooden stakes for holding up their large fruiting crops such as the 2 metre tall - truss tomatoes or vine crops. If you want to grow some seedlings now in the cooler weather, you could also raise them in a mini green house, which has multiple little plastic seedling pouches - like our egg cartons and a clear plastic cover with little vents to create humidity. If you want to go one step further, you can get a deluxe model with a heating tray at the bottom if you want to get into some serious propagation. A word of warning though; it is a catchy little enterprise, you will be saving your favourite - tasting capsicum, tomato, or cucumber seeds from now on and you will soon have plants everywhere. So, if you have the desire to grow your own fruits and veggies but you are short of room and have at least 6 hours full sun, then you can still surround yourself with potted home grown produce indeed. Our local nurseries and garden centres may stock the mini greenhouses, but if they do not, just ask and they may order them in for you. Its great to support our local industry!

Queensland Government scientists willassess the population biology of black jewfish in a new research project to better understand stocks and manage the species.

Minister for Agricultural Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the three-year priority project would provide crucial information to help protect the sustainability of black jewfish.

The research project’s objectives are to:

Determine the stock structure and connectivity of black jewfish throughout Queensland waters using genetics; and Assess the age structure, spawning biology and size-at-maturity for black jewfish populations on the east coast of Queensland.

“We need to know more about black jewfish on the east coast of Queensland to inform future assessments and management decisions that will lead to a long-term sustainable resource,� Mr Furner said.

Funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, scientists from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will conduct the research project which commences on 1 July 2020.

Mr Furner said scientists will work closely with commercial, recreational and charter fishers to collect samples and learn from their existing knowledge of black jewfish.

Since 2017, there has been a rapid increase in targeted commercial fishing of black jewfish following a rise in market demand for their swim bladders, which are sold fresh or dried in SouthEast Asia.

“The outcomes of this research project should give fishery managers an improved understanding of the biology of black jewfish stocks to be able to set catch limits for the species.�

Stakeholders who would like to participate can contact the project team by emailing samuel.williams@daf.qld. gov.au.

“While the research will be Queenslandwide, there will be a strong focus around the black jewfish hotspots such as Mackay and Rockhampton,� Mr Furner said.

In May 2019, the Queensland Government introduced a total allowable catch limit of 20 tonnes for black jewfish in response to escalating catches and concerns about sustainability.

Winter whiting season has well started and anywhere from Cooks Rocks across to the beacon and over to Gilligan’s Island is a good place to go for them, although they are all through the Passage right now. Shelly caught lots when she was fishing off Red Beach, around the 23cm mark but, thinking they were summer whiting, she threw them all back! Now is also the time to target tailor in the same area, on poppers and jerkbaits.

Big jewfish are enjoying the cooler weather and keeping a few fishers going through the nights around the bridge.

Try casting to the deeper holes near the pylons, around the turn of tide.

At the Bongaree jetty a couple of days ago, there was a good crowd and plenty of fishing. Lots of nibbles, all afternoon, but nothing caught – until the sun started sinking; then the fish began to play the game. It’s all about patience, and good company.

It’s near the end of the season for crabbing, but there are still plenty out there, and they’re coming up on the bait, so keep your landing net handy – they won’t give you a second chance!

The bigger snapper are yet to make their presence felt in the Passage, but there are plenty of almost big enough ones.

Another cold spell may be all they need to settle in around the ripples, outside Pacific Harbour.

Flathead, especially sand and bartailed, have been keeping the flounder company, in all the same spots through the Passage. Joshua caught a big flathead, while the kids were hooking onto flounder. The sizes have been improving through the month, and now we’re seeing plenty of 50cm+ specimens. Happily, we also hear of 6570cm ones going back into the water!

Not surprisingly, there are plenty of squid out there, too. Amanda and Daniel caught a few on a jig, just on the south side of the bridge, and then used them to catch flounder, flathead and a sand crab.

Flounder has been a big winner this month. From the shore, south of the bridge, up the Passage on both sides – just about any sandbank is holding flounder. They haven’t been modest sizes, either; plate-sized flounders are common. Squid has been the favoured bait, with prawns also being useful.

There are some really impressive bream being caught, on soft plastics and squid, as well as the ever-popular chicken fillet. Bream numbers are usually on the increase during June, and there should be plenty of under-sized ones to keep the kids busy in the creek mouths, Pacific Harbour and along the Bribie side of the Passage. The big bream will be in the same places, but are a bit cannier – not always easy to hook up – try using mullet strips; leaving the scales on often attracts the bigger bream.

Water clarity is good, because we’ve had precious little rain of late – less than 10mm for the whole of May. The winds, too, have been light, and mainly from the west.

The venus tuskfish are holding on into the cool weather and have been regular catches. The best place for them has been just north of Pacific Harbour, which is where Eleanor and crew caught three last weekend. Light line, small hook and prawns are a good combination for tuskfish; be alert to the smallest nibble and be ready to hold the fish back from the oyster beds or other refuges.

Winter fishing has well and truly started here at Bribie; the variety and numbers of fish being brought in, reflect the changing of the seasons.

Squid, again, is the most successful bait for flathead; pilchards and prawns are also working. A lot of the flathead have been caught on soft plastics. One that has been recommended is the Suga-pen 70, colour MB16. I’m told the MB is “Moreton Bay”, so it’s really made for local conditions, but is quite expensive.

A cheaper choice, that Samantha and Craig used to catch a 48cm flathead, near the Avon wreck, was a Pro-range Squidgie, White Lightning. I actually reckon that in the current conditions, almost any well-handled lure is going to work a treat for flathead. Sam caught a big flathead with a basic soft plastic last week; then caught a 64cm toadfish with the same lure – yum!

We must give credit where credit is due. Our National Cabinet have worked together, coordinated brilliantly and the decisive early action taken has flattened the COVID-19 curve throughout Australia. We have all played a part in accomplishing this notable result and I thank you all in Pumicestone for doing the right thing over the past months – your actions have helped get us here today as we turn the corner to recovery.

As I discussed on my last back page, looking to the future and our next battle, economic recovery won’t come easy. We can’t just flick a switch and life resumes. We’ve heard it often that our future will be different and in terms of our economy this is unprecedented – the economic shock worldwide will be profound.

As the Federal Treasurer said, the economic shock the world now confronts dwarfs that of the Global Financial Crisis (during the GFC, the global economy contracted by 0.1%. The International Monetary Fund projects a 3% contraction in 2020). Our ability to navigate through this crisis cements the importance of a strong economy.

Before the pandemic hit, our state debt was forecast to hit $92 billion. Now many may not consider the consequence of this figure until it starts to impact upon their lifestyle and future plans, but it is a number that we should never take our eyes off. Labor’s only solution to paying off this surging unsustainable debt has been to add taxes, with them introducing nine new taxes since coming into government in 2015. The LNP, by contrast, has given Queenslanders a no new tax guarantee.

Notwithstanding, which ever way you vote the facts are the facts. They affect us all and in an economic sense, our future generations to come and this is where people start to look at which side of Government can better manage us out of this mess.

NO STATE BUDGET FOR 2020

The Palaszczuk Labor Government announced it will not be delivering a 2020 State budget before the next election on 31 October 2020.

WORST PERFORMING STATE

Before COVID-19, Queensland was in far too much debt. We had the highest youth unemployment rate in Australia, the highest number of bankruptcies, the lowest level of construction across the State since 2006 and business investment in Queensland has fallen by a confounding $80 billion.

ECOMONIC FORECASTS – WHAT FORECASTS?

We won’t have the benefit of knowing what forecasts the State Government has made about the Queensland economy prior to going to the polls later this year.

INFRUSTRUCTURE CUTS

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has cut more than $2 billion from the infrastructure spend every year since being elected. We’ve felt this hit in the Pumicestone Electorate with vital upgrades on road infrastructure not progressing.

To begin to rebuild a strong economy, we must deliver the infrastructure a growing state needs. And we know that the proven path for paying back debt is not in higher (or new) taxes, but in growing the economy and this starts with getting people back into jobs and into work.

I too need to do my part in helping our local economic recovery and as such, this will be my final backpage. Instead I’ll be directing the electorate allowance funds over the next six months towards assisting our community groups to get back on their feet. Our wonderful groups haven’t been able to fundraise over recent months and they’ll need our support more than ever before to continue to do what they do best – make our community a better place. I’ll also continue to support our small businesses with sponsorship of free advertising pages in The Local, Island and Surrounds.

Whilst this won’t be the last you’ll hear from me, I do want to take this opportunity to thank my electorate for helping me find my voice. It’s not always easy to get wins in opposition, but we have worked hard together, rattled the cage where needed, and we’ve made it clear that Pumicestone is not just a location on a map, our needs must be heard!

There has always been a lot of noise in politics, but I hope that the noise I’ve made gives you security in the knowledge that I’ve always had Pumicestone’s best interests front of mind, and always will! I look forward to putting my best foot forward as your representative as we head to 31st October.

ANZAC DAY PROMPTS US TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE COURAGE OF OUR ANCESTORS IN SAFEGUARDING THE FREEDOM WE ENJOY TODAY. IT ALSO AFFORDS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PUT OUR CURRENT DIFFICULTIES INTO PERSPECTIVE.

The ANZAC spirit is very much alive in our strong and united community of Pumicestone. Locals took to their front driveways at 6am to “light up the dawn”. Heart-warming scenes played out as locals lined their driveways for a minute of silence with candles and torches in hand whilst the Last Post echoed down our streets.

One little boy, Nash, touched the hearts of so many locals who, at 5 years of age, placed a wreath on my behalf at the Beachmere Memorial, then stood to honour his Great Great Uncle, Private Edward Leslie Buckingham who fought in the 2/23 Battalion, Australian Army WWII. In a speech by His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, former Governor-General of Australia on the occasion of the re-dedication of the El Alamein Memorial, it was said: “One story conveys the essence of the élan of the 9th Division and what it achieved in this First Battle of El Alamein. On the afternoon of 12 July 1942, German infantry attacked Trig 33 in waves. Defending it were men of the 2/24th and 2/23rd Battalions and the 2/3rd Machine Gun Battalion. Private Edward Buckingham, the official history tells us, maintained fire, though with little cover having first one and then another Bren gun shot out of his hands.”

If there’s one thing our ANZACs taught us, it’s that we can overcome adversity to create a better life for our generations to come. We must ensure that Nash’s generation and those that come after him, understand the significance of ANZAC Day. For Nash, he will always have the story of his Great Great Uncle to bow his head in remembrance for the life he lives because of them - and this is the story he can pass on.
