Car enthusiasts swarm to Wheels by the Water
Story and pictures by Ken Hill
Time to rejuvenate our Island for future visitors Ken Hill comments Bribie Island has the potential to be one of the most sought after destinations around coastal Australia. Of course we all know a bridge upgrade and a duplicated road to the M1 is crucial to the Island’s development as a preferred residential area. Add a medical facility which can cater for minor emergency issues and surgeries, develop a food and drinks precinct or two, and we pretty much have paradise island. As Islanders who love the quiet life and are jealous of our pristine waters, we also have to cater for the inevitable winds of change. If we are to attract visitors which bring a family atmosphere to the island but also give balanced entertainment for young people to come and enjoy what we have to offer, we have to be open to longer business and service hours. We have an opportunity to capitalise on the fast-growing population of South East Queensland by offering all the services yet retaining the special ambience of the island and district we so dearly treasure. Perhaps we need a forum lead by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Chamber of Commerce with public input to bring together a development plan which could include more short-term style accommodation, precincts for food and entertainment and added land and water-based tourism ventures. It’s time to have a say in our future before it is decided for us.
Congrats to Jai and Matt and welcome to Shannon The team at Island and Surrounds congratulate Jai and Matt Beveridge on their baby due in December (Matt’s first Baby). It’s a boy and will be a little brother to Koda. Jai has been an influential part of our paper and has been there from day one with us. Her advertising design work and paper layout has been exceptional. We will miss Jai enormously while she is on maternity leave, and look forward to her return in the New Year. Shannon Horsfall now joins the team heading up layout and design. Shannon comes to us with a wealth of experience in design and advertising and has already settled into the role with confidence. Shannon is also an author illustrator and is writing her second children’s book so attention to detail in adverts just comes naturally. Enjoy your new baby Boy Jai. We all wish you the best of luck when he arrives in the Bribie Island world and, Shannon, we all look forward working with you. Sales Manager Belinda Ferguson
It was mega day for car buffs at the second annual Sandstone Point Hotel Wheels by the Water Car Show recently. I imported one in 1996,” Ken said. “The The weather gods helped make the Ferret weighs three and a half tonnes, so Sunday event even more successful than while it has four wheel drive capabilities last year. There were well in excess of and would probably cope with the Island 700 cars on show and the brilliant spring sand tracks... if I did get bogged I wonder sunshine ensured a bumper crowd. Ken, a member of the Sunshine Coast Veterans Car Club and Military Jeep Club of Australia, has also a 1943 World War 2 Jeep and still owns two of seven Lambretta scooters. His other passion is flying, operating out of Caboolture Airfield, taking people on joy flights. As a light aircraft aviation instructor, Ken is able to teach customers how to fly the aircraft they use on the joy flights including most of the take-off and half the landing procedures. Attached to ADFA Caboolture, he said the joy flights were “pretty good value at $150.” Exhibitors and those who entered came from throughout the South East and Brisbane. For Bribie Island car enthusiast, Ken Wales, it was a chance to show off his 1959 Daimler Ferret (named Ruby after his late mother) armoured reconnaissance vehicle which Islanders are familiar with from the Anzac Parade. It is the second Daimler Ferret Ken has owned after first getting hooked on the heavily armoured plated vehicle when a resident in the United Kingdom. “I sold my first Ferret when I left the UK in 1994 but then wanted to get another one so

Shopkeepers want Markets to Stay by Ken Hill
The iconic Bongaree Sunday markets, at Brennan Park, look set to continue with the vast majority of businesspeople along Toorbul St giving them the thumbs up.
Rumours that they may be shifted to another venue or relocated to Sandstone Point are untrue, Rotary Club of Bribie Island has confirmed. And concerns that the market stallholders were competing directly with local businesses were also unfounded, the Rotary organisers believe. However, there is a school of thought that Toorbul St could be closed on Sunday mornings for stallholders, leaving the park open to public use. Jenny Peard, of Who’s On First, games and gift shop, adjacent to the markets site, believes Toorbul St should be closed off during market times. “I’m not against the markets but I don’t believe they should be in a public park which is for everyone to enjoy,” the shopkeeper said. “The markets should be in the street like markets in Cleveland, Redcliffe and Caloundra. The markets here used to be around the corner but now they have taken over the park and the amenity of the park has been compromised,” she said. Michelle Ibil, of Island Designs, also wants to see the markets held along Toorbul St and not in the park. She said an increase in stallholders would add to the atmosphere of the markets. “The more stalls the better, it’s a nice buzz. I wouldn’t say the markets do anything for my business but that doesn’t really matter. I would like to see them close off
for the good of the community and the increased activity raises money for needy causes. The whole motive here should be to help each other and the community,” he said. Scoopy’s proprietor, Dave Alexander, also feels any change to the operation of the markets would be detrimental to all businesses and holding it along Toorbul St would lose about 30 car parks. “Shop owners must realise that if they don’t work with the markets they risk losing the venue, and then businesses in Toorbul St will be the ones to suffer,” Mr Alexander said. “There won’t be anyone down there on a Sunday if the markets are moved. Local people also enjoy the atmosphere the markets create and they (the locals) and shop owners will suffer if they don’t work with the markets because they will go. It will end up a ghost town in Brennan Park on a Sunday with no markets. If there are too many complaints they will go,” he reiterated. “We need to work together to promote the markets and get even more stallholders and create even more atmosphere,” Mr Alexander said.
Rotary market co-ordinator Gillian Parry said, “It is an ideal location where we can just use the park from 5am til 1.30pm. We are very fast at setting up and then leaving it to the public for the rest of the weekend. The markets also bring a lot of tourists to the island. When we set up the markets there, we decided that they would not compete with any businesses along Toorbul St,” Gillian emphasised. “The stallholders are mostly crafts, garden plants, second hand goods

the street, though, but I believe that will never happen,” she said.
Maree Dawson, of Merlots By The Sea, said the markets had brought the whole Bongaree business centre “alive. “It’s great for business. Businesses like ours, Scoopy’s and Blue Anchorage get destroyed, it just doesn’t stop while the markets are on,” she said. “The markets are putting Bribie on the map and they are a great asset, I only wish there were more stalls.”
Bongaree Hot Bread Bakery proprietor, Shane Shepherd, agrees that the markets were well worth the extra competition they provide to businesses. “If we lose the markets to another location we would all lose, especially to the larger competition over the bridge (Sandstone Point Hotel),” Mr Shepherd believes. He accused those with reservations about the markets as having a “blinkered outlook.” “The markets bring people here
and occasionally, a cake stall. The local honey man and the stalls of organic vegetables are also a great asset,” Gillian said. She said most of the stallholders did handcrafts or art work at home and come to the markets for “a bit of a pocket money”. Secretary of the Rotary Club, Mary Grant said the Club had a proud history of the markets at Bongaree after starting off with a car boot sale in the Woolworths car park 13 years ago. “Yes, we are very happy there with everything we make going back to the community. Rotary takes nothing from the profits,” she said. “We feel the markets bring people out to the shops on a Sunday. There are a lot of community people who have stalls there like churches, people who rescue animals, sometimes schools raising money, and where it is a charity group we don’t charge for a stallholder space.” Mary said.

Glamour Petz Animal Forum Hello again, our animal loving friends and welcome to Tick off! It is absolutely terrifying to think that a creature that’s the size of your pinkie nail, or even smaller, could feast on your fur-baby causing illness, paralysis and even death! This sneaky little parasite is known as the dreaded ‘tick’. There are three main types of tick you may come across known as the ‘bush tick’, the ‘brown dog tick’ and the fatal ‘paralysis tick’. Ticks latch onto a host and consume their blood. Neither the bush tick nor the brown dog tick are venomous but can cause illnesses, diseases and infections. The dreaded parasite tick however, injects venomous toxins as it sucks blood. These toxins can adversely affect the nervous system causing paralysis and even death. Tick checks should be conducted on your fur-babies often in tick season, regardless of whether they are showing signs of tick poisoning. Symptoms of tick poisoning can include change in vocal bark, lack of appetite, lethargy, vomiting and lack of movement in back legs. A tick check can be conducted as easily as patting your pet. Starting from head to tail, run your hands over your fur baby, including in the ears and mouth, between the toes and legs and under the tail. If a tick is found, grasp firmly with fingers or tweezers without crushing, twist and pull. Be sure to check you have removed the entire tick and the head is still attached. Put the tick in a sealed container or bag so it can be identified and if the animal has shown any symptoms, it’s highly recommended to see a vet. Ticks thrive in warm, humid climates and are most common in the Spring and Summer seasons. Your groomer, vet or pet store will be able to recommend or provide some great products and treatments to help prevent ticks. Thousands of dogs alone are harmed from ticks in Australia each year. This season already our groomers at Glamour Petz have encountered several serious tick cases along with multiple close calls. Please don’t let your fur baby be the next tick victim. Be aware, prevent, and TICK OFF! That’s all for this issue. Until next time...High Paws & Big Licks For more advice on ticks and other topics, Like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ glamourpetz

NIPPERS GET INTO THE SWING OF NEW SEASON
by Ken Hill getting better all the time,” Mr Harrison said. He said the Club’s success had led to the Club looking at purchasing new equipment including more inflatable rescue boats. “With good competition results, the new season is looking good and for those that would like to join they can just rock up to the Sunday events. Signing up involves just your birth certificate and depending on your age, a pool swim. So just come down and have fun.” Those interested in joining can contact the Surf Club on 3408 1188, email bribiesc@ bigpond.com or contact Ben Harrison on 0437 440 244.
New program for those with disabilities The Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club is gearing up for a big season with its junior Nippers and senior surf programs and events.
THE PENGUIN PROGRAM The Club this season has adopted the Penguin Program every fortnight, when possible, for those with disabilities to enjoy the surf and learn about water safety. The Club’s media officer, Ben Harrison, told Island and Surrounds that the Penguin Program would give those with a disability an opportunity to engage in the Surf Club with the emphasis on water familiarisation, fun in the water and safety in the surf. “The Penguin Program is for those with a physical and/or intellectual disability. The program will involve shallow water beach activities with fun and games so they can get used to the beach with a bit of safety training in the water as well,” Mr Harrison said. Meanwhile, the Nippers program is in full swing with a huge Sunday program for Nippers aged under 7 to under 14. “The idea of Nippers is to get children involved, enjoying beach and surf events and then making the transition to the senior body of the surf lifesaving club,” Mr Harrison said. At Nippers level they participate in flag races, learning on the boards and swimming for fun as a lead up to rescue work. “They learn how to ‘read’ the water, the sweeps (rips) and the rescue work the Club does.”
Nippers Olivia Dombrowski, Ellah Reid, Imogen Witt, Will Balke & Paige Rubin He said while Woorim beach was regarded as a safe family beach there were issues, such as sandbars, where they drop off the edge and people get into trouble with the current. “Alot of our rescues are from these sandbars,” Mr Harrison said. He said when Nippers reach senior level at under 14 they attend a week-long camp teaching them how to become involved in beach patrols and rescue work. “We also deal with sprains to ankles and wrists and treat those people stung with blue bottles or jellyfish”. “Fortunately, we don’t have the dangerous stingers here but they are moving southwards over time,” the surf life saver said. The most common form of treatment the club conducts is using hot, fresh water to quell the stings.
He said the Club was fortunate to have about a dozen surf patrol teams, but was always looking for new members in Nippers or at senior level.
BRIBIE ISLAND SURF CLUB The Bribie Club is also gaining a reputation for success at competition level, having won a gold medal in the relays at the last Australian National Titles held on the Sunshine Coast. “We also had a couple of bronze medal winners in the 2km beach runs at the Aussies. For a small Club we are

To be able to compete at the Area level contestants had to have won at their club speech contests and Bribie Toastmasters were represented in the International Speech and the Humorous Speech contests by Cathy McGilvray.
Both speeches can be on any subject and Cathy’s International speech “Practice Makes Perfect” was the story of her ending up in the bushes in front of McDonald’s while learning to ride her motorbike. This speech certainly kept the audience and judges amused and Cathy placed second in a tough contest of five competitors. Cathy then went on to win the Humorous context as she kept the room laughing
with her speech entitled “Superheated Superwoman” which is a light hearted look at how we can survive the hormonal condition that suddenly turns their partners into Superheroes who can heat a room to lava level 12. As the Area 3 Humorous contest winner Cathy will now go on to represent Bribie Toastmasters and the Area 3 region at the District Conference which is to be held in March 2017 in Hervey Bay.
If you are interested in discovering how Toastmasters can help you to speak with confidence in any situation, please don’t hesitate to contact Cathy on 0408 803 037 or please come along to one of the Bribie Toastmasters meetings that are held at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month in the ANZAC room of the Bribie RSL.

Letters to the Editor Donald Trump's Hillary Dear Editor, Have you heard of the Trump House? Forget the White House, Donald Trump is the new president of the United States of America! This could be the future of America. I am going to tell you the reason why Trump is the stronger candidate in the US elections. The truth is that although Trump may sound harsh and maybe a little bit racist. He has America in the best interests of his heart and says the truth. Meanwhile, his rival Hilary’s reputation is built on a mountain of lies and many deleted emails. My first point is about how knowledgeable Trump is. He is one of the wealthiest businessmen alive and has vast knowledge in the field of economics. During college, Trump worked with his father in the real estate business and graduated with over $200,000 which in today’s money is worth over $1,000,000. Trump then went onto become the president of the Trump Organisation which oversaw 14,000 apartments in New York. During this time, Trump’s father gave him a loan of $1 million dollars which may seem like a lot but Trump was able to turn that $1 million into the huge empire he has today which is worth over $4.5 billion, could any of you do that? If there is anyone able to help the United States Of America dig itself out of its $19 trillion dollar debt, Trump is the one for the job. This brings me to my second point which is about Trump’s ambition, he always looks to the future and doesn’t dwell on the past, he doesn’t succumb to other people’s opinions and special interests and he gets the job done, he also believes in the exceptionalism of all his people, and the expectations, Trump really doesn’t muck around. Imagine how great our world will be if Trump wins he elections and gets rid of evil, evil militant groups such as Isis who murder countless, innocent news reporters women and children, the list goes on. Just imagine how great life would be in our already wonderful countries of New Zealand and Australia,
and how free we would be to travel our world without the fear of being blown to pieces. My third and final point is about Trump’s honestly, through this honesty, Trump may sound harsh, racist, rude and speak his mind, but the truth is that Trump is different to any other presidential candidate the United States Of America has ever had in its more than 300 year existence. He doesn’t sugar-coat America’s problems and hold in his opinion so he doesn’t hurt the feelings of others. He lets everyone know what he thinks of people and America’s current state, his words stick in people’s heads such as “build a wall!” and “make America great again!”, can you remember any of the words of his rival Hilary Clinton? Hilary also happens to be someone who violates government policy, she was even found to be storing official state department emails on private servers. Another lie of her’s is that she claims to be named after Sir Edmund Hillary, who was the first man to place the NZ flag on the top of Mt Everest. There is only one problem, Hilary Clinton was already 6 years old when Sir Edmund Hillary rose to fame. This reflects what kind of person Hilary is. All in all, a good leader isn’t popular but makes decisions and keeps those decisions. The United States Of America isn’t in a great state and I think the USA needs to jump at this one in a lifetime opportunity to have Trump as a president over someone who lies for their own benefit, Trump is more enthusiastic than any other US president to exist to make not only America great again, but rather our wold which we live in a great place. Gian Tereo from Manukau, New Zealand 13 years old The views expressed in Letters to the Editor are not necessarily those of the editor or publishers of the newspaper.
Family lands a new venture Bribie Island’s latest fashion house Landed Urban Wear in the Harbour Village shopping complex at Banksia Beach has become a real family affair. Husband and wife team Shaun and Jessica Ross, with young family Ty, 4, and Izzy, 2, as well as Jessica’s father, Steven, all moved up from West Gippsland for a fresh start and new lifestyle.
Steven has branched out himself by taking over the newsagency in the complex while Jessica teaches at the Bribie Island Performing Arts dance and gymnastics school next door to Landed Urban Wear. Jessica admits to being the creative side of Landed Urban Wear, while Shaun, a fitter and turner by trade, has taken to the customer service role with heaps of new-found energy and flair. “Our target market at Urban Wear is street wear for the fashion conscious but we cater for all age groups from children up,” the Landed Urban Wear owner said. “We cater for everyone as much as possible from those who are fashion savvy, I guess, right up to the mature demographic, and we have just added a swimwear range as well. We are always ahead of the market up here because we have bought nearly all our brands from down south, with one overseas brand from the United States and all the rest Australian made.” Urban Wear hours are Monday 9.30am to 3pm, Tues and Wednesday 9.30am to 5pm, Thursday and Friday 9.30am to 6pm and Saturday 9.30am to 3pm. Their website is landedurbanwear.com.au
“We are relatively new to Bribie and decided to get away from the cold of Traralgon with my father included. We soon realised that Bribie didn’t have what we offer in street wear so we decided to give it a go. Shaun was also struggling with the cold in Victoria with his fibromyalgia but since we have been here in the warm climate he is thriving. And dad just opened up the newsagents in the shopping complex again with a whole new range of stock, better than before, while I am also teaching next door where we try and do something different to what is offered on the Island, such as break dancing, cheer leading and gymnastics. The break dancing is going nuts... we give them a hat and they go next door to the classes, as well as the other art forms offered from 3.30pm to 6.15pm Monday to Wednesday.” “We are on Bribie Island time now and love getting involved in the community. We just love the lifestyle here too,” Jessica said.

PIKININI PLAYGROUND PARTNERSHIP
Four residents from Honiara, Solomon Islands were guests at a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Bribie Island. They came to the meeting to thank the Club for the support they have received for their local Kindergarten.
The Rotary Club of Bribie Island has worked in partnership with the Bribie Island Community Kindergarten which is a not-for-profit community kindy who also have a Sistership with an early childhood service in the Solomon Island - Pikinini Playground Family Daycare. Last year two staff from the Bribie Island Community Kindergarten visited the Solomon’s to train their staff in the techniques used with the children on Bribie.
Narelle Dawson, Director of The Bribie Island Community Kindergarten service, also attended the meeting and said
that their Kindergarten is one of only 38 Australia wide to receive the highest ACECQA rating of Excellence.
Bribie Rotary paid the airfares for the teachers, Vivian and Nesalyn, to come and train for two weeks on Bribie Island. At the meeting they said this was their first trip away from the Solomon Islands and they explained what they had learnt.
Jillian and Issy Kari, the owners of Pikinini Playground Family Daycare, expressed thanks to all for providing such a wonderful, educational experience for their teachers. The wealth of knowledge and experiences they have had over these two weeks will spread and benefit the Pikinini Playground community in Honiara. Rotarians attended the Kindergarten to see the training taking place, and the Club has donated books and games for the team to take back to Honiara.

By the time I ask this question I would have most likely already been told that they want to “Lose weight”, “Get Fit”, “Feel better”. Most will also tell me that they have been reading these slightly weird ramblings of a crazed Personal Trainer for a while and finally decided they had to “do something”. But why NOW? Why didn’t they phone last week? Last month? Last year? And when I do get THAT answer, that’s when I hear about the stuff that most people bury down deep and try to ignore. This is when I hear how they are miserable because they can’t walk with their partner due to sore knees or no energy and of missed overseas trips due to lack of fitness. I learn of wanting to improve handicaps in golf or being able to spend the whole day bowling without feeling like a steamroller hit you. I’m told about ever expanding waist lines and saggy girly bits squeezed into dresses that looked great last summer but have shrunk – which, by the way, is really caused by the calorie fairies who sneak in and sew your clothes smaller! Wicked little beasties aren’t they! And yes, I’ve been told of ex partners who are about to be shown what a huge mistake they’ve made! These are the dreams that people don’t want to admit to because, well… because although we all know that we could do
something to fix all this stuff, actually doing it? Well that’s when we can struggle alone and feel like a failure which is sucky and unnecessary since most of this can be easily solved with some exercise and healthy nutrition. So what does it take to reach that point where you know, deep down, in that place that always insists on telling you the truth, even when you don’t want to hear it, in a voice that sounds like a mix of your Nana, your Mum and you, that it’s NOW time to do “Something”. Is it a sibling or close friend becoming ill, or retirement travel dreams that are not so easy to achieve when you can’t walk and sit comfortably. Or do you just really want to be able to tell that annoying bloke you have to listen to bragging on the 19th hole that you just knocked another 3 off your handicap! Whatever it took to reach now, now is the time for your “something”. But hang on, what is your magic “something”? Ahhhhh now that’s where we come in, because unless you find something that suits your lifestyle, your dream and most importantly your body, it’s never going to work. If you need help finding your something then guess who can help? If it’s not a something that we do at Fit Beyond50, that’s ok, because if we can, we will help find something that improves your fitness and health and that you enjoy because if it’s enjoyable you will keep doing it and doing it is what makes something work! Go one then… ask yourself the question “WHY NOW?” Listen to the reason, that deep down Nana/Mum/You voice reason, find your something, and enjoy your happiness!
Senior Gentle Balancing Exercises Before you start - you need to hit the bottle!
One of the best and cheapest “hand weights” you can get is a 500ml bottle of water. Many people have difficulty holding a hard object such as a dumbbell, not because it is heavy but because they are “hard” to hold them securely if you have arthritis. Hand weights can also be expensive. Once opened, a 500ml bottle of water is quite soft to hold and the weight of the bottle can also be adjusted to suit your current strength. A full 500ml bottle of water weighs 500grms (1/2kg) If you find this is too heavy then just have a drink and it will weigh less. As your strength increases you can increase the water or add a little sand to increase the weight. Use a stable chair to sit in and wear flat bottomed shoes so when you stand up you will be balanced. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these exercises, stop! Start slowly with each exercise and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That’s ok! Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started!
The exercises here are the type of gentle strength exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes except we use resistance bands instead of weights or water bottles. If you have a resistance band or tube you can use that instead of the water bottle. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember, strength training is a great way to increase bone density. Strong muscles will help with your balance and mobility but do need to be done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will give you improvement in strength over time. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.
Wall Push Up
Stand at just a little bit closer than arms-length from wall. Place hands on wall at chest height, stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart. Lower your body so your nose almost touches the wall, hold for count “one and two”. Slowly push away from the wall until you are almost back at arms-length then repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing - up to 10.
Chair Shoulder Side Raise
Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low. Hold water bottles gently - do not grip tightly as your hands may become sore or cramp. Keep your elbows slightly bent and gently raise your arms out to the side. Only lift as high as is comfortable for your shoulders. Do not lift above your shoulder height. Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing - up to 15. Rest
Seated Bicep Curls
Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low. Hold water bottles gently - do not grip tightly as your hands may become sore or cramp. Start with arms down and hands by the side of your chair. Keep elbows tucked in tight and your upper arm does not move. Bring your hand with the bottle up to your shoulder and lower back down slowly. Repeat slowly, only do as many “curls” as you feel comfortable doing - up to 10. Rest
Seated Chest Fly
Use a stable chair that is not too soft or low. Start by doing this exercise without the water bottles if you find this easy you can then see if you can comfortably hold the bottles while performing the exercise. Bring elbows up to as close to shoulder height as you comfortably can with your arms at 90º. Keep your arms up and slowly bring your elbows together and hold for count “one and two”. Repeat slowly, only do as many “closes” as you feel comfortable doing - up to 10. Rest

TECH TIPS by Jacob Wood from Impact Computers
“Your computer is infected and has been locked!! Please call Microsoft Technical Support…” These messages are all too common (and annoying) while browsing the web these days. But where do they come from? Should you be concerned? And what can you do? With everything from our banking details to family photos being stored on our devices these days it’s definitely concerning to see messages like this. Good thing is they usually aren’t harmful and are just the online equivalent of the classic ‘Microsoft Technical Support’ telemarketing call. Often appearing on websites claiming to offer free movies, TV shows, or the like. If they keep popping up, then how do you get rid of them? If you’re using a browser such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, a checkbox allowing you to prevent further popups from appearing should be available. If that doesn’t stop it, then your next best option is to hold the power button on your computer down for around 10 seconds or until it turns off. Wait a minute and then turn it back on. Just keep in mind that with this option you will lose anything you haven’t saved. At this point you should make sure your browser is up to date and even look into an ad/ pop-up blocker. After that it should be happy browsing! However, if you are still having problems don’t stress! There are more advanced options we can try. Come in and see us at Impact Computers or call us on 3475 3004. What should our next tech tip be? Email your suggestions to us at contact@impactcomputers.com.au

Workplace Health and Safety CONSULTATION
Your workers are directly affected by your decisions! Consultation is about involving people not just “telling” them what is going to happen. Before you make any firm Work Place Health and Safety decisions, consult with your workers for their point of view. Consultation enables you to become aware of issues experienced by your workers and involve them in addressing potential problems before they affect your business. For example, any new change of work tasks (or introduction of chemicals) may create safety risks but by involving your workers they could identify any risks before there is unnecessary expense or down time to your business. Keep a record of any decisions and or concerns and act upon them. This will confirm to your employees that you are serious about their safety issues and that you value their input. You’ll be surprised how far this will go towards building confidence and loyalty within your business. Including your workers in the decision making process shows clear management commitment to safety. “As well as being a good idea, consultation about safety issues is required under work health and safety law!” (ref. WARTIME BRIBIE FRONT LINE OF DEFENCE Australian and American Forces
about 20 civilians, permitted to remain on the island but restricted to Bongaree area.
Fort Bribie, Port of Brisbane defence, began on the northern end of Bribie Island in 1939, with construction of two gun emplacements called ‘Fort Bribie’, that once housed two hundred troops. Pearl Harbour: The attack on December 7, 1941, coupled with the Japanese invasion of the Philippines and the Malay Peninsula on the same day, intensified the amount of allied shipping assembled in Moreton Bay, (which could be easily seen, sitting ducks to enemy raiders, ships, submarines or aircraft) resulting in building Fort Skirmish at Woorim. Property commandeered: Defence facilities were urgently required and the scramble began. Bribie State School closed, all residences, business premises including hotel and guest houses
Brisbane Line: According to spokesman in the official Centenary Publication of Caboolture Shire Council, Spear and Musket 1879-1979”, “...the most critical time was 1943-46 when the Japanese were bearing down on us.”
Bribie gun tower commandeered. Only a few civilians in essential occupations, such as local police officer, baker, postmaster, General store and temporary hotel staff,
It was then that ‘The Brisbane Line’ was planned. Evacuation of our area and all the area north of the line was arranged. Our shire council distributed formal evacuation forms to the residents. All cattle, horses and other livestock were to be moved southwest...”

The

I had this rotten mongrel dog His hair was short and dark The only things he ever did Was dig and bloody bark
I showed him out through the gate In a most unorthodox way Then he yelled, and turned all nasty The courts will make you pay
The day he dug into the chooks It turned me face blood red In frenzied haste, he snapped and barked Till all me chooks were dead
So I had to go and front the beak But he let me off with a warning That bloody dog barked again all night Have a guess, who showed up in the morning
As I booted him right up the freckle He latched onto me bloody leg But I got sweet revenge at feed time I just let the mongrel beg
It was that cranky council bloke again He’d come round to give me grief Not a word, just a short sharp whistle And his visit became very brief
When me Mum came round to see me She gushed, “What a cute little pup” I mumbled “He’d be much better If I could shut the bugger up”
The dog comes tearing around the corner Made one deadly, accurate pass And like a canine ninja Grabs a mouthful of old mate’s arse
The neighbours must have had enough So they called the council bloke The way they whinged about the dog Was just a bloody joke From the Department of Noise Pollution They’ve sent this bloke around He said you’ll have to stop him barking Or he’ll end up in the pound
I had to prise the dog off his bum Then I shoved him through the gate It was on that miserable, memorable day The dog became me mate

The Guinea Pig Grade By Brianna Boserio, Whyatt Chinn and Phoebe Diamond-Griffin
Ever wonder how QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) implements new elements or adjustments to its curriculum to better suit the students of Queensland? Wonder no more, as we introduce you to the Guinea Pig grade – the current grade 9s who have been the grade to trial and test all new types of schooling in the Queensland Curriculum. The Guinea Pig grade began in 2007, for the grade 9 cohort in the student’s first year of school, with the introduction of prep versus preschool. This new system, saw preschool students play based learning changed to intensive curriculum learning and their two and three day rotation weeks change to a full time schedule of five days of school a week. The second change this Guinea Pig grade were endured to be tested on occurred in 2014 when they were the final grade 7 grade in primary school. Unfortunately, this cohort were forgotten during the graduation process,
YOUNG MINDS CONTRIBUTION
27
because the grade 6 cohort - who were also graduating – became the focus of all plans. They were also robbed of attention when they began high school for the first time in 2015, along with the grade below who began high school with the introduction of grade 7 into high school. While the school created a grade 7 area and spent endless amounts of time ensuring they had adjusted to high school, our grade 9 cohort were left out in the cold with mere scraps thrown our way. As if this weren’t enough for the poor souls of the Guinea Pig grade, the final change they will have to undergo, is the transition from the OP (overall position) system to a brand new senior syllabus and entry system into high school. Why are we disgruntled over this? The answer is simple: no new system ever runs smoothly and our concern is we will be disadvantaged yet again. The external testing is scary and daunting and a lot of us are nervous about being the ones to test this system. The Guinea Pig grade will have to go through multiple internal and external assessment before being given a score out of 100. While this new way of testing will most likely benefit the students in the long run and make the evaluating process much more accurate, this issue is that the same set of students are being faced with being the first to trial yet another change in the system. Yes, we need a system that works for students and we all know that change is the way of the future, but did they really have to put every single one of these changes onto the shoulders of this same group of students? Why create this Guinea Pigs grade who trials all of the changes in education? They needed to share the burden.
Geeks & Gadgets: Oz Comic-Con
By Natalie Moore, Madeline Scully and Alexis Thomas
You may have heard of the event called Oz Comic-Con before but have you ever taken the time to delve into this delicious world of fantasy, superheroes, anime, gaming (both board and video) and sci-fi? Well, here’s your chance to develop an understanding of what to expect if you attend this fun-filled event. Comic-Con is a convention that is held across the globe, catering for all - young and old - who hold a love of popular culture. Some people are such avid fans that they revolve their whole life around attending Comic-Cons. The more dedicated attendees, will spend upwards of $1000 for a VIP experience, which gives them front row access to Q&A panels with their favourite stars, artists and authors from the fantasy and sci-fi world, jump the queue for photos and autographs of said stars and special meet and greet experiences outside of convention hours. Why has Comic-Con evolved from the small comic book exchange it started as in San Diego to the outrageously popular convention it is today, you may ask? The truth is, it offers nerds and geeks across the globe the opportunity to grab merchandise, receive autographs and
photographs from their favourite actors and to engage with experts of board games and video games. But what has become an even more integral part of Comic-Con, is the opportunity to dress up as your favourite character (known as cosplaying). Cosplaying has become such a huge part of the convention that we now have Comic-Con cosplaying world championships, where winners from Comic-Cons all over the world meet and compete. Comic-Con also offers the opportunity for individuals to learn tricks of the trade to costume making from the experts. What makes Cosplay such a major part of Comic-Con? It’s because it gives fans the chance to dress up as their favourite character without it being Halloween. It’s a safe place to celebrate being nerdy and geeky without being judged for being dressed as their favourite fantasy/sci-fi character. In fact, you’re more likely to be judged for not cosplaying. Cosplaying at these conventions is also a fun way of meeting new people who are in the same fandom (people who love the same show or comic book series or movies). You will often see people doing photo shoots with people dressed as other characters from the same fandom. If you love fantasy or sci-fi or you just want to experience something different, why not attend a Comic-Con. It offers a large variety of stores where you can buy merchandise from your favourite movies, TV shows and animes. You can also buy art work and cosplaying pieces, not to mention it gives you the opportunity to learn how to play board games and video games. The possibilities are endless! It’s a gathering of people who have a kindred spirit.

SPRING INTO ACTION WEEDS, WEEDS, WEEDS
MICK’S PATCH
Well Happy November to you all and dare I say it, Christmas is almost here again so time to spring into action and get your lawns and gardens into ship shape condition. The extra effort put in now means we can relax a little more in the festive season that is now fast approaching. Weeds weeds weeds Last month on my rounds I was amazed at the amount of weeds growing in lawns and gardens and the great many of them in flower. There is an old saying- “One year of seeds, seven years of weeds.” Of all the many available lawn & weed products for sale at your local garden centre, most of them will work much better if your lawn is sufficiently hydrated before application. Most of the manufacturers of selective herbicides caution on their label, not to apply to stressed lawns or in temperatures above 30 degrees and not to mow the lawn before or after application of product, ranging from 3 to 7 days. The reasoning is, the more leaf blades on the weeds you are targeting the better the overall result of the herbicide and once the weed is sprayed
with Mick O’Brien Dip Hort (MIAH) SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT 3 Last edition we touched base on the importance of keeping the soil balanced and healthy and full of life, teaming with micro organisms, beneficial bacteria and fungi, also the importance of keeping moisture in the soil profile while incorporating compost to feed the soil life and to attract earth worms, using feeder mulches like sugar cane and lucerne with the intention of creating a open crumbly fertile soil. When it comes to gardening, It starts with soil and ends with the soil and as I have been doing my rounds on Bribie this month, I have come across situations where the soil has had multiple thick blanket coats of mulch applied over the years and the mulch fines have compacted to such an extent that the mulch has become water repellent and when irrigation was applied, it just rolled off the top. Upon closer inspection I pulled back the mulch and dug down and scraped it back to expose the sandy soil and applied more irrigation and watched the water roll off the top of the soil surface too, just like the mulch. In situations like these when you have soil that is hydrophobic: “ the term given when It does not accept water”, then any fertiliser applied is also wasted, because without moisture in the root zone, the plants can not absorb the nutrients they need and as a consequence you might wonder why your plants are stunted or sickly or worse even dying, regardless of how well your gardens are mulched accordingly. So what did we do? The challenge: Respect the existing plants in the garden and try not to disturb their roots, while scraping away and removing the layers of mulch to expose the soil surface. Once the hydrophobic soil is exposed I applied a liquid Humectant .“ Helps the soil to retain moisture in the root zone” and a Soil wetter to the soil surface. “ Soil Wetter to break down the waxy coating on the soil to allow irrigation to infiltrate into the soil profile.”
LANDSCAPING PLANT OF THE MONTH - DIETES GRANDEFLORA On my travels this month I came across this old favourite Wild Iris in flower. Dietes grandiflora, I have seen thousands of these common clumping grass like perennial plants with their long rigid sword like green leaves thriving on neglect in roadside landscaping projects and in many coastal parks over the years but it never seems amaze me the true beauty of nature when I see these magnificent flowers in bloom. Three of the white outer petals have a distinct yellow raised streak positioned like a runway for the busy bees to land and even the inner lilac sepals are positioned like a parking bay for bees to rest and must be totally irresistible for all insects that fly past, myself included, so if you are hovering around like me this spring keep an eye out for these magnificent blooms in the road side gardens or our coastal parks.
Then I applied a prescription blend of rock mineral dusts, mixed with Carbon and Zeolite to assist in rebuilding the soil, then applied seaweed solution and thoroughly watered it all in. Next covered this with a thin layer of imported soil from our local landscape supplier, added more mineral dusts and irrigation, before finally laying mulch with a broad open stringy structure with the objective to let air and water through to the soil surface again. So it was quite an effort but by keeping it moist the garden will flourish once again in due course! As a preventative measure it would be a good practice to scrape back and turn your old mulch and add some organic fertiliser then water it in well, before adding some new mulch this spring to your gardens. So this November, “may you sing in the garden and your earth worms sing back!” Stay tuned to part 4. “Soils ain’t soils”, Next edition. Until then Happy Holistic Gardening!
the product takes a week or two to complete its cycle as it shuts down the plants cells, causing it to finally collapse. It is also good practice to hold off on any fertiliser regimes until your weeds have been controlled and when you do fertlise it’s very important to keep your patch hydrated before and after application. Soil wetters are a great product that assist water repelling soils to absorb water once again and are very useful during times of environmental stresses but if you can keep your organic matter levels up, you will have less problems down the track. I spread around some powdered cow manure on my lawn, “available in bags from the garden retailer” then water it in thoroughly, the powdered cow manure works slowly but really gives a natural boost of vitality and adds that vital organic matter to improve the soil structure, another simple way of adding organic matter is using a mulching plug in your mower to scatter a fine layer of grass clippings back onto your lawn which in turn feeds the soil and in turn feeds your lawn. now your lawn is taken care of, time to “spring into action” and take the family to the beach! Until next issue- Happy Holistic Gardening

Herbs If you enjoy cooking and keep abreast of new cooking trends I’m sure you would have noticed that all the Chefs are using micro herbs; and I’m sure you’ve asked yourself, as I have what exactly are they, can I grow them at home and what do I need to do? What they are is really quite simple, micro herbs are herbs; young, tender and dainty flavour packed morsels that are the perfect garnish for any dish you wish to create. When grown commercially the herbs are grown hydroponically and have a seed to harvest turnaround period of roughly 3 weeks or once they have produced their 1st true leaf. To grow your own micro herbs at home it is a simple process however you will need some basic equipment, seeds and of course a few minutes of your time each day to water and harvest; but most importantly it is important to sow your seeds densely which is very much against the rules when growing seeds for more traditional uses. You will need a selection of quality seeds, a seedling tray (or more), seed raising mix and some fine vermiculite. Most nurseries or garden warehouse suppliers will have everything that you need. Simply fill the seedling tray with seed raising mix tamped down lightly scatter the seeds in a thick layer and dust a thin layer of vermiculite over the seeds to protect them and keep them moist as they germinate. There are many varieties of herb that are commercially grown as micro herbs. Greek and Purple basil, chervil, mizuna, coriander, watercress, rocket and mustard green are a few of these and all of these can be easily grown at home.

Make your own fascinator for Melbourne Cup Feeling creative? Need something specific to match ‘that’ dress? Want something unique? Why not make your own fascinator for race day? Milliners will make their own fascinator bases, but pre-made bases can be purchased from your local fabric craft store, like Spotlight or Lincraft. They come in various shapes, sizes and fasteners. Alternatively, you can use a headband, hair comb or clip as a base. Bases can then be covered with material (eg lace) or left as is. Once you have selected your base, you need to decide on the style and decorations you desire. These can be feathers, flowers, bows, lace, tulle, beads or diamantés. Arrange decorations onto base and fasten with sewing pins. Once you’re happy with the design, glue and/or hand sew them in place. If hand
sewing, use a thread colour that matches the base/decorations. If you are able to visibly see thread or glue spots (and this isn’t your intention), cover them over with a
and glue this to the underside of the base, ensuring the comb/clip is not obstructed. Trending: Flower Crowns. Flower Crowns can be made by fastening multiple flowers along a headband. You can use either the same flower style or many different styles. Flowers can be purchased pre-made or you can make your own out of most materials.
Make a material flower 1. Cut 1 circular piece of material and multiple petal shapes from your choice of material/s decoration eg some diamantés. Remember no one can see the underside of your fascinator so thread ties or glue spots don’t matter. However, If you do want to cover these, you can cut a piece of material the same size as the base
2. Spray or paint petals with fabric stiffener and place on side lying bottle to dry. This allows the petals dry in a curved shape and gives a fuller effect 3. Once petals are dry; glue or hand sew petals to the circular piece
Alternatively, instead of placing petals flat on material, you can wrap petals around a spherical object, such as a bead, for a fuller effect. Note: You can choose not to use stiffener, just add more petals but be aware of the extra weight. Then all that’s left to do is to get dressed up, place your fascinator on your head and enjoy cup day!

Cr Peter Flannery Writes Mosquitoes are part of our environment in South East Queensland and mosquito numbers are high at the moment due to the very wet September the region experienced. Water is holding and producing mosquitoes in a range of areas including containers. Even small amounts of water can produce large numbers of adult mosquitoes. Council has an extensive management program that helps to reduce the numbers of adult mosquitoes that are around. This program includes: • Aerial treatment of the saltmarsh areas of the region after tide or rainfall triggers; • Ground treatments of freshwater that has accumulated after rain on council reserves; and • Adult mosquito treatments that include fogging and barrier treatments. Residents can take some action as well by using repellent if outside. The repellents that contact DEET are the best and most effective. Another great product is spray that contains BiFenthrin and this can be sprayed onto your trees, fly screens and structures to also provide residual protection from adult mosquitoes but be aware when using around fish ponds. Also, take five minutes to check your property for anything that is holding water. Kind regards Peter
Brooke Savige In February this year, Council consulted on proposed upgrade works for Welsby Parade in Bongaree; between Bribie Island Road and the Kangaroo Avenue shops. Council sought feedback from residents living adjacent to Welsby Parade about the extent, timing, and impacts of the proposed upgrade. As a result of your feedback on the project, Council has halved the number of pedestrian crossing and traffic calming devices proposed for the corridor. Council has sought to strike a balance between improving safety for pedestrians and other road users, and minimising disruption for drivers. These revisions include installing of raised pedestrian zebra crossings and traffic calming near the Ferguson Avenue and Allamanda Drive intersections and a new at-grade zebra crossing near the Charlotte Avenue intersection, with central landscaped island. There will also be landscaped areas and new street trees at selected points along the corridor, including traffic islands and kerb buildouts. I am pleased to say that there will be pathway upgrades to better connect the existing and new crossings to the foreshore pathway and revised street line marking and installation
of bicycle awareness zones. At this stage the design will be finalised by December 2016 with construction starting July 2017. There will be a community meeting held in the near future so I can hear your thoughts and report back to Council. Residents may have also noticed a temporary fence installation at Banksia Beach to help combat recent coastal erosion and better manage beach access, it has been erected at a couple of fragile sections that have been recently affected by erosion. Council has recently undertaken beach sand nourishment along these affected areas and plan to revegetate with low native dune covers that will further stabilise this fragile section. Please use the appropriate beach entry and exits to access these areas. Regards Brooke Savige Councillor Division 1

By Cheryl Williams So good to see the glorious weather is still continuing which means there is lots happening on the water. With the school holidays, there was some great size fish being caught. Seems to be the bait of the month being Live Blood Worms and the whiting, bream and flathead love them. Some of the fish caught were 42cm Whiting caught at White Patch on Live Blood Worms off the beach so you don’t need a boat to get amongst it. 4wd tracks and the beach, we need to be mindful of the speed limits as we do have people fishing and children playing on the beach and if you see anyone acting in a manner that is dangerous to our beach users you need to get the registration number and report it to police or the rangers. We have had an accident up the beach recently and luckily nobody was seriously hurt so we need to be careful of others and don’t forget no dogs are allowed up the beach in or out of a vehicle it will be a fine if caught. QFES reflects on Firefighters Remembrance Day Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), Fire and Emergency Services Minister Bill Byrne and Member for Pumicestone have paid tribute to fallen firefighters on Firefighters Remembrance Day today.
Mr Rick William said each year, the tenth day of the tenth month was a day of reflection for firefighters in the Pumicestone electorate and across the State. “Today is an opportunity to acknowledge and recognise the dedication firefighters display to protect locals,” he said. “They hold an
was nothing short of courageous.
QFES Commissioner Katarina Carroll said 51 Queensland firefighters who lost their lives on duty since 1877 were remembered at ceremonies statewide. She said firefighters also paused for one minute’s silence at 10am to acknowledge the sacrifices of fallen firefighters. “Flags at fire stations will fly at half-mast to honour those who have tragically lost their lives and as a mark of appreciation for the risks our firefighters face every time they clock on,” Ms Carroll said. “Our workforce
New child safety workers for Caboolture deployed will be determined over the next fortnight.”
Three new child safety workers will be based at Caboolture by the end of the year as part of the State Government’s commitment to restore frontline services and keep children safe.
“We are committed to keeping Queensland children safe and to driving record investment into early intervention services to help families stay safely together, before they come into contact with the child protection system.”
Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman said she directed her department to reallocate resources to areas experiencing high demand a year ago.
As a result, four additional staff commenced work at Caboolture, as well as one additional staff member each at both Strathpine and Redcliffe, early in 2016. “There is a record more than $1 billion to fund child and family services in Queensland in the 2016-17 Budget,” Ms Fentiman said.
“But it is also a reminder that we all have a part to play when it comes to keeping children in our community safe. After all, child safety is everyone’s business,” he said.
“We have 166 more frontline and frontline support staff than we did two years ago, and there is an additional 47 workers whose recruitment is being fast-tracked by the end of the year.”
important place in our society, with their line of duty meaning they often sacrifice their own safety to protect lives and properties.” Minister Byrne said firefighters responded to a wide variety of dangerous and hazardous incidents, and their commitment to protecting others during these incidents
“This includes an additional 7.5 new child safety workers for the North Coast region, with three to be based at Caboolture, one at Redcliffe and a part-time position at Strathpine.”
Pumicestone MP Rick Williams said it was great news that additional staff will be servicing the local community and helping to keep children safe. “We are rebuilding the child safety system after the LNP cut 225 child safety jobs when they were in government,” Mr Williams said.
“This month I announced another 82 new frontline child safety workers will be hired to help reduce caseloads and keep Queensland children safe.” “The locations where those staff will be
