We don’t want candidates that tell lies without the proven facts, I feel you don’t respect Bribie Island and it’s community by making claims that the LNP will build a nuclear Power plant. You should not be running for the next state election.

Robert J Woorim Oh Dear Harvey.....you obviously didn’t see the ABC expose` last October on the abattoir (just down the road) at Caboolture. Meramist is a horse Abattoir and many of the thousands that meet a brutal end there are retired thoroughbreds, and on the way to their gruesome end they are bashed and prodded (with electric prods) ad nauseum. Whilst we do agree with you regarding law breaking and threatening

behaviour it was only due to a covert operation that the horrific footage of the animal abuses in this abattoir was obtained. Sometimes the end does justify the means.

“Thank You for comments about me missing the ABC coverage of the abattoirs for large livestock in Caboolture.

Generally, I rarely watch the ABC Current Affairs or News, because, in my opinion, it is a biased organisation in these matters and rarely accurately presents the news; the ABC has become an advocate for various causes around the country, although, in this case, the exposure was worth the effort.

As a professional soldier for most of life, having seen combat in quite a few places; it is my view that the end rarely justifies the means. If you use this logic it does not take long for humans to degenerate into war criminals – justifying their actions by referring to the end result. I maintain that this is a dangerous mindset: the proper authority must always sanction the threat of violence to other humans.

I repeat my comments that many people chose vegetables over meat for their diet – nothing wrong with that at all.

Militant veganism is not for health reasons, it is for a totally different agenda; one that involves the threat of violence by intruding into people’s homes and business for a purely political agenda. This behaviour will inevitably result in violence as people will, repeat will protect their homes and businesses.

I was pleased to read that Harvey is concerned about the 4WD damage to the beach. Most publicity on this matter has been concerned with the survival of our rare turtle visitors.

However, the more serious concern with dune destruction, is our own safety, as dune vegetation is very important for maintaining our fragile island. The vandals at Woorim who destroyed trees for the sake of their views were really destroying their own protection. With increased extremes of weather, they will suffer the consequences unless they have already sold out to reap a profit.

feasibility of these power plants.

Nuclear power costs more than that from coal, or renewables. (Chief Scientist) The Australian Government has not secured a nuclear waste dump.

Germany is replacing its nuclear and coal-fired plants with renewables. Japan is also shedding them and is looking to Australia to provide hydrogen, the power source of the future.

Every candidate contesting Pumicestone should be questioning whether nuclear power is a safe, economical energy.

We have local council elections coming up, there are several people running for the mayor position & councillor positions in Moreton Bay Region and we should all get to know them all so we can make our informed decision.

A site has been created by a well-known businessperson who gets their jolly by running down every candidate & digging up dirt.

Fortunately, it recycles itself.

We are drinking water into which the dinosaurs piddled. Most of it is ice in the North and South polar regions. As for the politics I have friends’ graziers in mid north NSW. Water that flows through their property, from North Qld on its way to the Murray Darling system, they are not permitted to touch any of it. Can you believe that? It all depends on who is your local member.

More pressure needs to be applied to politicians to increase water storage.

Secondly, this Chris Thompson, intending candidate for Mayor in the forthcoming local government election has just lost a few thousand votes before anything happens by promising to abolish the canal levy. That means every other ratepayer in the shire who chooses not to live on a canal will be subsidising the people who choose to live on a canal. When you introduce water into a situation it will turn out to be very expensive and the levy is there for a reason. If people choose to live next door to water that is solely their responsibility.

Dear Editor, I and about 20 other vehicles had the misfortune to be behind a small red Toyota car at about noon on 6 March. From the junction of Avon Avenue with Sunderland Drive all the way to the Main shopping centre then along Goodwin Drive as far as Cotterill Avenue, where thankfully our paths diverged, the driver never exceeded 45 km/hour. And yes, drivers slow down around roundabouts, but not to walking pace like this guy. The weather was good, and the traffic was not heavy. If 45 is the fastest this person feels confident to drive on a divided road with a 70 limit, I suggest he or she hand back their licence! Thankfully other than one blast on the horn, the drivers following all kept their cool and there was no tailgating or road rage.

A RED BENCH… Betty Taylor CEO of Red Rose Foundation

Under grey and oppressive clouds, a significant event unfolded on the shores of Pumicestone Passage, close by the Bongaree Jetty on the morning of 6 March 2020.

In the Moreton Bay Regional Council area, some close attention is being given to the modern curse of our communities – domestic violence.

No one is claiming to have a silver bullet; a universal solution to a community burden which affects many thousands of women and children, and, of course, men, who are also subjected to domestic violence although not in the same numbers.

But some actions towards addressing the matter of domestic violence do not always have to be overt: and some ideas are best expressed in a low key fashion.

So, what are we talking about?

We are talking about a RED BENCH. A normal park bench painted bright red and distinguished with a stainless steel plaque naming the sponsors and the purpose.

So what? May you ask?

Well, this is a seat where you can quietly take your place, on the Red Bench, beside Pumicestone water…and reflect upon the matter of domestic violence.

You can talk to strangers as they go by – I did!

Because I sat there for a while…spoke to some people as they strolled along, swapped the time of day and the weather; we could have done more.

It is located on the side of the footpath, by the seashore, just behind the trees at the end of the Bongaree Jetty.

It is planned to have twelve such Red Benches throughout the Moreton Bay Regional Council area; one in each division of the Local Government area.

This one, on Bribie Island, was the first such bench to be officially opened.

And, its purpose, as mentioned above, is to draw attention to the abuse of elders in our community and to domestic violence. The bench, in its current location, is obvious.

Go there. Think for a while about the honesty of purpose. Almost all domestic violence is about control and possession. Take the opportunity, talk to others, involve the community in a discussion about a very touchy subject.

Currently, in Australia, we all look to the Government, and it does not seem to matter what level of Government, we all look to the Government to fix problems. More funding, more assets, more equipment, “ someone should do something “, “ we need the Police to fix it.”

Quite frankly, the Government and the Police can only do so much- they cannot fix everything. They simply cannot.

So, maybe we can start to fix this terrible problem because we own it and we can begin to take responsibility for our actions. Males, mainly, can make positive contributions by thinking about their actions: there is always a better

It is not the idea to focus simply upon males to address this problem; obviously, the issue is about actions, and domestic abuse involves psychological as well as physical abuse and females, as well as males, are involved in that.

Domestic violence and abuse should not be dealt with in silence; if you know something, say something.

This event was marked by the presence of Councillor Brooke Savige, from the Moreton Bay Regional Council, one of the two major sponsors of the idea.

Councillor Savige is the incumbent and popular Local Government representative for Bribie Island, plus the CEO of the other major sponsor, The Red Rose Foundation, Betty Taylor.

Also present was Fiona Worrall, a Senior Representative of the Centre Against Domestic Abuse in Caboolture and a lively, committed and very effective team from Hairdressers with Hearts, headed up by Sonia Colvin.

These are determined women; they have ‘ skin in the game ‘.

They all deal with the effects of domestic violence regularly. Their presence at this small event, by the water at Bongaree speaks volumes for the importance they place upon the idea and the purpose of the Red Benches.

Next time you are in the area of the Bongaree Jetty take note of the Red Bench – use it for the view is pretty good, and people do talk to you.

Shoppers’ packaged meat dilemma

Bribie Island shoppers beware! What you are paying for at the supermarket checkout today may not be what ends up on your plate tonight!

A number of supermarket shoppers believe they are being short changed when it comes to pre-packaged meat that is price fixed.

Recent media coverage has some residents concerned over the letter ‘e’ (meaning ‘estimate’) on the supermarket price labels of pre-packaged meat items.

Price fixing is where a batch of meat items is priced at the same value and at the same weight.

Some shoppers have expressed growing frustrations over alleged weight discrepancies.

One shopper has claimed to have purchased 500g of mince for the fixed price of $7, only to get home to weigh her purchase at 262g. Another shopper said she will only purchase from a good butcher or wholesaler.

The National Measurement Institute (NMI) is the Australian Government’s national authority responsible for developing, maintaining and regulating the measurement system.

An NMI spokesperson acknowledged the letter ‘e’ on supermarket prepackaged pricing labels may confuse some shoppers to believe they are not receiving value for money.

“The ‘e’ mark indicates that goods have been packed in accordance with the Average Quantity System (AQS),” the spokesperson said.

“AQS is an internationally agreed method of determining the size or quantity of pre-packed articles being sold by measure.”

Under AQS requirements, manufacturers, packers and importers must ensure that the net weight average from a production batch cannot be less than that stated on the pricing label.

NMI conducts regular inspections to ensure compliance.

A small number of weight deficiencies from each production batch is “tolerable” however must not exceed more than two deficiencies.

The NMI also requires that all prepackaged meat products must exhibit the price per kilo on the selling label.

However, we have found that our local supermarkets do not show the price per kilo. (see Photo’s) A local butcher has stated that his business is not subject to the ‘e’ standard, however customers can always view the weight and the price per kilo of the product when on the scales at the time of purchase.

Avondale Meats, based in the Bribie Island Shopping Centre, takes a very transparent approach when selling their product. Owners Greg Doyle and Wendy Farmer cannot sell by the gram, only by the price per kilo. They also ensure the packaging weight is not included in the cost of purchase.

“The perception is that independent butchers are ripping customers off,” Greg said.

“There is a system in place through Meat Standards Australia (MSA) that is meant to equalise us with supermarkets, however I rarely find it in place,” Greg said.

The MSA is a grading system developed to improve the supply of consistently high quality meat to the consumer. The grade can be three, four or five star quality.

Again 250gm (e) of Pork Medallions $8.00 at the supermarket pre packed, this price makes it $32.00 per kilo and at Avondale Meats the cost is only $16.95 per kilo, if you were to buy the pork medallions from your local butcher, the cost would be approx. $4.23 and not $8.00. This is a huge difference in price.

The Equation is simple...

Avondale Meats proprietors Greg Doyle and Wendy Farmer pride themselves on selling quality meat products and urge shoppers to support independent small businesses.

“Supermarkets promote that they sell MSA meat however the product is inferior. People are not getting what they pay for,” Greg said.

“Every year we are targeted by the large supermarkets for overpricing when in fact it is the larger supermarkets who are price fixing to give the impression that they are cheaper.”

“Our main concern is the lack of support from the public. Three other butchery businesses have gone broke on the island in about the last 12 months,” Greg said.

“We served only two percent of the population who came into the shopping centre out of 2.5 million that visited the centre from January to December in 2019.”

Greg and Wendy employ two qualified butchers and an apprentice, and Wendy believes they are at a disadvantage for being small business owners on Bribie Island.

“We sell only the best quality meats. It is not at all about the appearance of selling cheap meat.”

“We are proud of the skilled labour we have, however there is definitely a disadvantage against small business,” Wendy said.

“The difference is that we proudly employ skilled local labour against production line employees.”

Passionate residents fight to save wetlands

Another resident who only purchased in the area five months ago cannot believe the deterioration of the wetlands during that time.

When she arrived, the wetlands were thriving and birdlife and fish were abundant.

“It is now solid sludge. The council keeps spraying the weed, but it needs dredging.”

Councillor Brooke Savige informed concerned residents that remedial works would be carried out.

“Council wants to fix these problems and they will, particularly when this has been left for so long with only maintenance issues being fixed but not the more substantial drainage and waterways issues being looked at,” Cr Savige said.

A council spokesperson said council officers had inspected the site and maintenance works were scheduled for the area.

“We have installed booms to prevent the spread of the weed and will be conducting a range of treatment activities to manage salvinia in the area.

Council said maintenance works would also include unblocking drainage areas and tidal gates.

“Bibimulya Wetlands are an important stormwater asset designed to improve water quality and catchment flows,” the council spokesperson said.

“These wetlands act as filtration systems to remove pollutants like sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus from stormwater discharging from the surrounding suburban catchment.

By Staff Writer Davina Illing Concerns have been raised over the deteriorating condition of the Bellara Bibimulya Wetlands and its impact on local residents and ecosystem.

Residents who reside near or on the extremity of the wetlands met onsite with Moreton Bay Regional Council recently to discuss ways to remedy the situation.

The wetlands area now makes up three small lakes on which residents Eileen and Andrew Crane have resided for more than 20 years.

Andrew says the wetlands were reconfigured by council just over a decade ago, changing the whole ecosystem and drainage paths.

“Originally this whole area was a salt water marsh with mangroves, wildlife and crabs until council developed it into three lakes,” Andrew said.

Andrew and Eileen said the redevelopment works were designed for storm water to drain into the first lake to allow the sediment to settle, then flow into the second lake, and ultimately into the third lake and then out to Pumicestone Passage.

“When council reconfigured the area, they left little space for machinery to access,” Eileen said.

“Now the drains are blocked with sediment which keeps building up layer by layer and with every heavy rainfall we have flooding up on to the banks.

“The nutrient in the sediment has encouraged salvinia (a noxious weed) to breed. We used to have pelicans, spoonbills and egret visit, now we only

Simone Wilson MP is concerned about the Candidate for Labor in this year’s State Election regarding her conduct to the Pumicestone Community.

Dear Readers, I want to share this letter from the Commissioner of the Electoral Commission Queensland with the community because I believe it’s the right thing to do as your State representative.

Recently, Labor’s candidate for Pumicestone in the upcoming State election, Ali King, posted fictitious lies on her Facebook page about the LNP. She said “Over and over again, Bribie Island has been suggested by the LNP as a possible site for a nuclear power plant” and she topped it off with an animated graphic depicting Bribie Island being blown up.

The objective of this outright lie was to scare you all into believing this claim had substance – and I suggest an attempt to garner your vote. This is exactly the type of scaremongering that turns people off politicians and why the public questions why they should trust

those who seek office.

The Electoral Commissioner indicated this is a matter for the Queensland Police. At this time I will not bring police into this matter as it would be unfair to tie up their resources on what we all know is just another Labor Lie. However, if this lie continues to be perpetuated by Labor’s Ali King, then I will take the necessary steps on behalf of my community as I won’t stand for lies and as I always say, we’re a sharp bunch out here.

The Local News asked Ali King to provide proof of her statement and she said “A 2007 Report during the Howard Government's nuclear debate identified Bribie Island as a potential site. LNP idol Sir Joh Bjelke Petersen himself considered building a nuclear power plant at Toorbul Point.” Ali King also said “Bribie Island has regularly been proposed by the LNP and others as a nuclear power station site. During the 2018 LNP Convention when the LNP adopted their pro-nuclear Queensland policy LNP members stood up and proposed Bribie Island as an ideal site.”

The LOCAL News did not receive and could not find any proof regarding this claim from Ms Ali King despite asking for it.

Toorbul, Meldale & Donnybrook say thank you to their local toorbul rural fire brigade

The Toorbul & Donnybrook Pensioner’ Club hosted a lunch on 15 February at their hall to raise much needed funds for the local Toorbul Rural Fire Brigade. “They are very well respected in our small township of Donnybrook and Toorbul and we can’t thank them enough – there’s always one of them to help us when we need it.” said Jan Stephensen

Jan advised “there were 46 people came on the day and enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the club members. They also bought raffle tickets, prizes for which were donated by Brooke Savige, Simone Wilson, Terry Young and our local Community Pharmacy.”

Entertainment was provided by Les Stephensen who plays guitar and sings “old” songs we all know, and Claire Stevenson who recited a poem depicting a Real Aussie. Geoff Fabila played a dodger i one - a pipe with a sliding inside and also played his guitar – a real treat. Then we were entertained by “Boom Baby” – well known musicians from Bribie. We all had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. All of our entertainers donated their time for the day.

The club was able to add to our previously promised donations to make up to over $2500

Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said that the Caboolture Hospital would soon host two mental healthcare units to better treat mental health patients.

“We’re building a brand new $5.4 million Mental Health Short Stay Unit right here in Caboolture, to provide a safe environment for patients and deliver the very best model of care,” Minister Ryan said.

“Emergency Departments aren’t always the best place to treat mental health patients, it can be overwhelming for patients and doesn’t always connect them with the care they need.

“The Short Stay Unit will mean mental health patients can bypass emergency departments and be treated by specialist staff faster in an environment designed for their specific needs.

“That, combined with the new Step Up Step Down youth mental health facility in the Caboolture CBD, means that Caboolture locals experiencing a mental health crisis can get the care they need.”

The $352.9 million redevelopment of Caboolture Hospital and $41.7 million multi-storey car park also remain on track with the tender process to find a main contractor in its final stages.

HAPPY 30th BIRTHDAY TO Pumicestone Probus Club Well the 30th Birthday of Pumistone Passage Probus Club, and it seems no time at all since our 25th!! Am I getting old? Of course not, how could I? We are such a fun and vibrant club.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP cooked up a storm on the BBQ for the University of Sunshine Coast’s (USC) Orientation Day at the Caboolture Campus on Monday, February 17.

Amanda , Sylvia , Penny and Kathy planned the event. We had a great night, the tables were decorated with flowers in the Probus colours of blue and yellow, the balloons filled with hydrogen floated above the top table ( Fortunately non drifted up to the rafters!!)The blue and yellow napkins were just right ( good old IKEA ).

Mr Young said it was great to be there to support USC's commencing students and give out free sausages and bottles of water to help them get started on their university journey.

“I am committed to ensuring that all Longman residents can chase their dream whatever that may be,” Mr Young said.

SUGAR SUGAR, AHH HONEY HONEY…

You are my candy girl and you got me wanting you…. Do you remember The Archies song? I play this during my Heartbeats classes and the other day I realised how true it was, because, as we all know, sugar in any form (honey, rice syrup etc) can cause cravings and if you have lots of sugar, sugar or honey, honey you will keep craving more like a crazed beast for the rest of the day if not the rest of the week!

Of course these days The Archies would be singing “Spinach, Spinach, Ahhh Av-OCadooo, you are my greenie girl and you gotta be good for me….” Hmmm not quite as catchy is it.

Being fit and healthy definitely requires movement but you can’t cure a bad diet with exercise! So what you eat impacts on how you feel and if you eat the right foods you definitely become healthier and happier. Yes, you literally are what you eat!

I’m sure that you’ve seen at least one of the quizillion documentaries on TV telling us about the impact an unhealthy highly processed diet has on your body and mind. Hopefully by now you are aware that over consuming sugar will definitely increase your chances of suffering from obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and depression.

Many of you are probably doing your best to watch your sugar consumption, in fact a lot of people have stopped adding sugar or honey to their cereal, or tea and coffee and just by doing this you can have a big impact on your health and weight over the period of a week, month and year, which is awesome, but what about the hidden sugars in your foods?

advertising that “lite” and “Low Fat” foods use to make you think you are doing the right thing when it comes to purchasing healthy foods when really you are being tricked into consuming vast amounts of hidden sugars.

My favourite – or should say most hated example is yoghurt - Recent research that tested 900 yoghurts in Australia found that full fat Natural, Greek and Greekstyle yoghurts proved to have the lowest sugar, averaging 5g per 100g. (Also they have a far higher protein count which is very important.)

Flavoured yoghurt and fruit yoghurt had more than double the sugar content, averaging about 11.5g per 100g between them. Remembering that most yoghurt “single serve” containers are more than 100grms - usually 140grms which means up to three teaspoons of sugar per container!

And beware organic yoghurts: while the O-word makes us think these are healthier and lower-calorie, the report found these to have 13g sugar per 100g — the second highest average sugar content after dessert yoghurts which can have 16g sugar per 100g. Your choice of yoghurt could have more sugar per serve than ice-cream!

Unfortunately not many of us have the time, or the eyesight, to check out the labels on foods every time we shop. I mean honestly, some of those label are placed in such a way that reading the nutritional value is impossible… And gosh, I wonder why?

Now I’m definitely not saying that you should never eat sugar! There is no such thing as a “bad” food but don’t be fooled into buying “Healthy” just because of a label! Do you honestly believe that marshmallows are healthy because their label says 100% fat free! Of course they are fat free they are 100% sugar!

Since I am ranting this month about healthy foods I will also climb onto my high horse to discuss “diets” Because

Senior Gentle Exercises Towel Time Before You Start go and Grab A Small Towel!

Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only complete as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

TOWEL TANGO

Standing tall, with your shoulders back, stretch the towel horizontally with your hands grabbing both ends and hold the towel close to your chest front of your chest. Step forward with your right leg and bend at the knee.

Straighten the other leg. Push your arms and the towel forward at the same time.

Step back to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.

Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg.

Rest

TOWEL TWIRLS

Stand in a place where you have plenty of room around you.

Hold one end of the small towel with your right hand and keeping your arm straight make circular movements as fast as you comfortably can with your right arm, twirl the towel clockwise Repeat with your left hand.

Then taking the towel in your right hand again twirl the towel counter clockwise.

Repeat with your left hand.

Only do as many as is comfortable for you up to 10 times with each arm.

Rest

TOWEL TOE TAPS

If you are feel unstable when standing on one foot please stand next to the kitchen bench or a stable chair for support if needed.

Stand tall with your shoulders back and your feet shoulder width apart.

Hold the towel with both hands and stretch your arms straight in front at shoulder height. Holding the upper corners of the towel lift your right foot to touch the lower part of the towel or as close to the corner as you can comfortably reach. Return to starting position and repeat with your left foot.

Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg. Rest

TOWEL CURLS

Sitting or standing Fold 2 x towels to form a bundle that is easily held in each hand Start with hands beside your legs with your fingernails against your legs Bring your hand up towards your shoulder Keep your elbow close to your body and your upper arm still Repeat as many times as you both feel comfortable doing up to 15 “curls”.

This is am awesome number of classes for Rhonda especially as she makes time to fit the Heartbeats classes in between her lawn bowls duties and other events.

On Tuesday the 2nd of March more awards were handed out with Cath completing her 100th class and receiving her Heartbeats Tshirt and certificate. On the same day Barbara completed her 300th class and Jenny reached the 500th class milestone!

How the NDIS is benefitting our community

As a community-based organisation, Bribie Respite has been providing support services to the Bribie community for over 20 years.

In response to the NDIS, at Bribie Respite we now provide a range of disability and learning support services catering to individual needs.

In recent years, with the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, we’ve extended our service offering and are seeing first hand how it is benefitting members of our community.

As well as providing a varied activity program at our centre five days a week, we offer one-on-one and in home support services. Our personalised approach means we help clients realise goals and choose what they want to do.

The NDIS aims to puts people with a disability at the centre of the system for the first time. It allows them to determine their own future and receive funding which matches their needs and aspirations.

They may wish to access mainstream community activities, seek help with cooking or cleaning, or learn new skills so they can do jobs themselves and extend their independence.

People with a disability want to be part of the economic and social life of their community and have a right to determine their own futures, like everyone else.

We see life changing situations. Many of our clients are learning to lead a more independent life and developing valuable life skills and lessons in household management and personal care. They are also building their confidence while developing new friendships and interests.

In our learning centre, we also see NDIS clients significantly developing their literacy and numeracy skills.

At Bribie Respite, we believe that life with a disability should not stop someone from being active and participating in a variety of enjoyable activities.

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. Bribie Island Plumbing tips from Plumbing Bribie Island The first thing everyone should know is where your water turns off at the main, in an Emergency this could save you literally Tens of thousands dollars in Damage to cupboards flooring and so on.

You would be surprised at how many people don’t have a clue where to locate their mains they are often over grown in a garden, buried under the ground or in some cases they have been concreted over.

So here are some simple steps that may one day save you a lot of mess and money: 1. Locate the Water Meter, in some cases the meter will be in the ground in a meter box, in others it will be exposed above the ground.

2. Make sure it is clear and free with easy access to the shut off valve, you may need to dig the dirt out of the meter box to expose the shut off valve.

3. Make sure you can turn the water off, turn your front hose tap on and then turn the water off at the meter, there should be no water at all coming through.

4. If your Meter is located in a garden, then paint it a nice bright stand out colour so you can always find it in an Emergency.

5. In the event your water meter won’t shut off or you can’t find it please give us a call and we will organise it to be fixed by Unity Water free of charge.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP was excited to join lords, ladies, knights and other nobles from across Longman on a crusaders journey for a bushfire fundraising dinner at Abbey Hall for the Abbey Medieval Festival and Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology’s Fundraising Dinner.

The Abbey Medieval Festival and Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology raised $6685 for the small town of Genoa on the Victoria/NSW border that was devastated by the bushfires.

Youth Voice You See it, but Are Blind Geeks & Gadgets Artificial Sight Olivia D’Rozario Bribie Island High School.

Home and Away, Neighbours, Married at First Sight and the news all have one thing in common, and it’s not that they are trending. All of the aforementioned productions exhibit a major issue that is consistent, almost uniformly, with Australian television. That issue is underrepresentation. Disparity between representation of cultures is substantial within Australia’s entertainment industry, particularly in television.

Despite being vastly multicultural, Aussie television fails to acknowledge and accurately portray the vibrant and interesting cultures that call this country home. Majority of series and reality shows greatly lack characters, actors and presenters that are not of Anglo-Celtic heritage. For instance, in a 2016 report from Screen Australia, it was found that only 12 percent of all television drama characters were of nonEuropean heritage (Screen Australia, 2016). This disproportion is further manifested by comparing a culture’s percentage of the entire population, to the percentage represented in television; 17 percent of the population are from Middle Eastern, Asian or African backgrounds, yet only seven percent of all characters represent these cultures (Screen Australia, 2016). For Australia’s First Nations, shortfall in representation is widely discernible. Famed soap opera, Home and Away, has only featured one Aboriginal character in 31 years on air

(Vatsikopoulos, 2015). This evidence provides a newfound perspective on representation, one that many viewers overlook as they sit back and enjoy the show.

Underrepresentation is everyone’s concern. For the unaware watcher, this issue may not seem significant. You put the television on and relax, not a second thought spent. This is where the issue lies, to most viewers, inclusion is not a concern. It should be. Television has the capacity to inspire and connect people. Acclaimed Sapphires actress, Miranda Tapsell, perfectly captures this in her 2015 Logie’s acceptance speech: “Put more beautiful people of colour on TV, and connect viewers in ways that transcend race and unite us,” (Tapsell, 2015). In addition to this, wider inclusivity of cultures in television, engenders an overarching feeling of relatability and familiarity; all of which can break down stereotyping and implicit bias. Connections made, through inclusivity in television, are crucial to create understanding and awareness of racial/cultural issues.

While watching television we witness ‘white-washing’ on every channel.

Majority of television productions reflect major gaps in diversity. We see it, but we are blind. Blind to the lack of cultural diversity, blind to the impacts and blind to the benefit of change.

Scientists have recently 3D printed the most advanced, artificial cornea (the transparent layer at the front of the eye) using human cells. This medical breakthrough is currently in the testing stage, however, it is foreseen that in the near future these artificial corneas will offer millions of people the miracle of sight.

“It was tricky to find the right recipe for an ink that’s thin enough to squirt through a 3D printer’s nozzle,” stated Che Connon, a tissue engineer at Newcastle University, who was part of the team of scientists that invented the artificial cornea. To make the ink consistent, stem cells extracted from donor corneas are combined with collagen proteins. The cornea is the first lens light travels through before reaching the retina at the back of the eye. Damage to the cornea can distort vision or even lead to blindness. ‘Nearly five million people around the world are blind because infection scarred their corneas’ (World Health Organisation, 2019). Currently, damaged corneas are replaced with those of deceased donors, however, there are not nearly enough donated corneas to compensate for everyone affected.

This new concept, termed Experimental Eye Research, does not eliminate the

The research team at Newcastle University photographed a volunteer’s eyeball to fabricate a 3D model of a cornea. This enabled them to create a template to feed through the 3D printer based off the shape of a human cornea.

Although this artificial cornea is a significant medical breakthrough, there is still a long journey before these 3D printed corneas come close to a human eyeball. The printing process has to be fine-tuned and safety tests will have to be undergone. This advancement is proof that it is possible to 3D print something that looks like a human cornea and that has a similar makeup.

It is also the first time the distinctive, curved shape of a cornea has been artificially created. The scientists at Newcastle University have made an advancement that will lead to restoring millions of peoples’ sight.

as they attempt to use what system is available to them to resolve their differences in relationship breakdown.

How can any system of administration and Court delivered decisions start to deal with that?

The answer is it simply can not. So then, what can we do as a community?

I see great clamouring happening for more Federal funding. For what? What needs more funding?

How much taxpayer money is available, bushfires, drought, climate action, subsidies for the motor industry it just goes on and on….

Australia has become a place where the moment a problem or a difficulty arises; there is a call for taxpayer funding to fix the problem.

I am not convinced that increased taxpayer funding is the answer, there is a strong case for more Police and there is a strong case for giving the AVO system some more muscles.

But…in the end, monsters will find a way and no amount of government funding or extra thousands of Police will ever

One example of the complications is that, as far as I can understand, the Family Law Court of Australia has 20,000 cases waiting to be heard – meaning couples can wait up to five years to have custody matters and property settlement resolved.

Quite frankly this is intolerable.

This the stuff of third world countries and I ask myself, “ Where is the noise about this? Where is the outrage? We rush about with our hair on fire because someone said something on nonsense television, but here we have an issue that really is worth getting agitated about and I hear nothing. “ Why?

I am aware, as many of you reading this will be, that a fair percentage of the male instigated violence against their former partners is carried out by men who are on bail from the Courts.

It is not hard to research some of these matters and it is often the case that the Police have opposed bail, but the Court overrules the Police and the male goes free.

Why?

It seems to me that if Police oppose bail of a person charged on the grounds of danger to the community then the Court’s only option is to accept the Police advice.

Further to this, I wonder if, a Magistrate who rejects Police recommendations regarding bail should be held responsible for the actions of the person he/she bailed?

It seems to be a very simple situation.

What is the point of having Police if the Courts do not act in concert with the Police?

I mean, what is the point of having Police if they spend hours of their time cleaning up situations created by people who should not be on the streets?

All of us know of examples of murders and rape, carried out by men who are on bail from the Courts.

These are not easy questions to ask, but, if there is evidence of ongoing physical and psychological threats to a woman who is escaping an abusive relationship and an AVO has been issued, why, if brought before the Courts for breaching

deserve, the whole community deserves some sensible answers and some clear leadership in this sordid mess.

It is not hard to expose weaknesses in the system and it is easy to point fingers at those who have to work within our systems; the purpose of these words is not to find fault, the purpose of these words is to highlight these terrible issues, create some community discussion which will lead to some sensible conclusions.

Tolerance, respect for other human beings can stop it.

These things, love, tolerance and respect are the human response to this

Broken.

It is a matter of serious concern that the levels of violence and the ferocious anger that drives these levels of violence have reached current levels. Men and women have been at each other’s throats for many, many, many years over equality of relationships, custody of children and disposal of assets: but it is clear that there is a total lack of respect and tolerance for the views of other persons in these matters in our current society.

There is not a simple or a single set of solutions to this; it does seem though, that social media provides a forum for violent expressions that have no recourse or consequence. I mean you

not new. Family Law Judges have been threatened and indeed murdered, by men who refuse to accept the rulings from this Court.

I observe that these emotions have escalated to new levels of intolerance and entitlement – violent solutions and threats of violence are commonplace when relationships begin to break down.

It should also be clear that, in the early stages of relationships breakdowns, females, as well as males, contribute to the lack of tolerance, the emotional anger and the sense of revenge that mitigates against sensible discussions.

So, across this Nation, a wave of boiling anger exists between men and women,

curse which stalks our land.

Maybe this tragedy, this terrible event, will give legs to the above human responses.

May the memory of Hannah Baxter and her Children last long and give comfort to her family and friends.

Cranky Lizard Speaks Identity politics is corrupting the process of democracy by feeding the radicalism of Australian politics [Cranky Lizard acknowledges the Wall Street Journal article published on 16 February 2020 from which material has been drawn for this article by Cranky Lizard.]

Bernie Sanders, the Democratic Party of the United States of America’s leading candidate in the current Presidential race, is a life long Marxist. He had his honeymoon in the Soviet Union in 1988, declaring the place to be a modern political wonder where housing costs were 5% of the average Soviet income compared to 40% of the average USA income.

He missed the two-bedroom apartments in Moscow with up to five families living in them!

So what? You may ask.

What has this got to do with Australia?

Well, it has a hell of a lot to do with Australia.

And here is why.

This man trashes his nation; he calls the USA a racist society from top to bottom, his radical policies of health, housing and power generation have attracted millennials who have not lived long enough to understand the nonsense of what this man promises.

How did this man, the antipathy of almost everything the United States of America stand for, get into the position that he is?

Well, the answer to that is what is relevant to this country.

He has had the cooperation of the Democrats, in Australia, read the Labor Party and the left-wing individuals who dominate our media and university campuses.

Rather than challenge the ideas, the high taxing nonsense [ remember that from Shorten and Bowen? ] the media and the academics have indulged and promoted Sanders and his weird plans because it suits them to do so.

They have created the political atmosphere, in which he has prospered, and we see the same events unfold here in Australia.

In 2008 the left-wing blamed the panic and crash of the financial markets on capitalism, not, as it should have been, on poor monetary policy, subsidies for bad housing risks and failed government regulation. The attack on capitalism and the markets from which wealth grows continues today, supported by the majority of the universities and the media in Australia.

In particular, there has been a determined and significant rise of left-wing intolerance on campus; curricular has been re-written to suit the ideological fashions, history has been dogmatized and Western democratic tradition has been twisted, distorted and even purged. Witness the destruction of historic figure statues on campus in the

United Kingdom and the United States of America. Similar events are unfolding in Australia; the mainstream media, except for a few voices has acquiesced, even encouraged, these trends. Mainly because they are now a product of the skewed system.

Universities have been the institutions trusted with the stories of human development, entrusted with the encouragement of untrammelled minds of our bright young scholars, expected to set the standards of scientific endeavour and debate, to determine and maintain the academic standards of our major professions and sciences, medicine, engineering, the law and the humanities.

But, we can see that first, the humanities, then the social sciences and now even the sciences have been forced to accept identity politics. Race, gender, class and sexual orientation have become the obsession of the academic pursuit of scholarship and tenure.

This culture has nurtured millennials and Gen Z into the aggressive personal cultures and identity compartmentalisation and attack which pervade our mainstream media.

Identity politics achieved a ‘ second stage ‘ boost with various police shootings in the United States during 2014/2015. The world is now held in your hand on your mobile phone and the Black Lives Matter phenomena exploded into the media in Australia, Europe the UK and, of course, the USA. The Black Lives Matter movement had plenty of lascivious followers in Australia and in a period of months, years of good work in Aboriginal relations were trashed, once again, enthusiastically supported by mainstream media.

And, where was the truth in all of this?

Where were the journalistic standards of probity and research required by any serious commentator on public and current affairs?

Well, those standards were trashed in the name of identity politics. The truth no longer matters in these forums.

We can see the effects of these factual distortions when we see images of poor bloody kids holding up signs portraying Captain Cook invading Australia on 26 January 1776 – the truth is that Captain James Cook sailed up and down the Australian coast and landed in Botany Bay in April 1770. Sections of the academia and the media are quite happy to run with this untruth, and poor old Captain Cook has become another casualty in the mad identity politics of Australia.

Disrespect for Australian history and Australian institutions, like our National Anthem, has been fostered by this deceitful and malignant process, Cranky Lizard draws your attention to the slavish following of Aboriginal football players to show disrespect to our Flag and National Anthem because of old Jimmy Cook! Who did not even turn up on the day that they all say he did! You would think that if it was worth protesting about they would get the facts right, wouldn’t you?

And then, of course, we have the most significant moral issue of our time. A similar comment some years ago from an Australian Prime Minister grabbed our attention, but now, with the help of

the passage of time, we can stare, openmouthed in wonder at the nonsense of it all.

Climate change/ climate science has become a religion, no longer a science. There has been a generation of apocalyptic education which has turned what has always been, and always should have been, a matter of temperatures and scientific modelling into a cultural identity!

No dissent is tolerated, note the Greens suggestion for Climate Courts, marine biologists have been sacked from Australian Universities for questioning dire predictions about the death of the Great Barrier Reef…economies can be wrecked with “ Heath Robinson “ schemes of mirrors and windmills to produce baseload power. The media, here in Australia and internationally, fawn slavishly over the utterances of a Swedish teenager who was born in Stockholm, Sweden in January 2003.

She is the daughter of Swedish actor Svante Thunberg and opera singer Malena Ernman, and, as far as Cranky Lizard can understand, has no particular climate or scientific credentials which confer upon her any credibility to comment on the world’s climate science – but you see – that no longer matters. It is the identity that counts and the media in Australia go cross-eyed in fervour at the mention of her name. Why? Wild eyed madness descended on a portion of the nation’s academics, those described as ‘ climate scientists ‘ as they apportioned blame for the bush fire tragedy on politicians, particularly the Prime Minister. Even a few moments of clear thinking will tell you that Scott Morrison could not have been responsible for the green-based policies that were implemented at every level of Government in Australia for many, many years and which produced an impossible fuel load.

The term ‘ woke ‘ is used proudly to describe those amongst us who have become aware of the current issues of gender, race, climate and identity.

Cranky Lizard has another view on being ‘ woke.’

It is a shame that media institutions, for many years, respected as partial and determined to portray the news and current affairs in our Nation as it happened and as it was, have now become little more than advocates for a cause.

They no longer add to the quality of public debate in Australia, because there rarely is any – TV current affairs programmes run mutual admiration sessions around identity politics ; TV news programmes run stories on disgruntled people who are victims of whatever is going, in most cases, it will be the ‘ Gumments’ fault, no one seems responsible for their own actions anymore and our politics is sliding towards a swamp defined by race, gender and the climate.

Cranky Lizard reckons that the old ANZAC spirit of getting on with life, doing the best you can with what you have got is well and truly lost in Australia. Lost in the identity politics

of the day. Lost in the notion that it is always someone else's fault and if you can’t find someone – then blame the ‘ Gumment “.

Cranky Lizard believes that if you have a go, you will get a go and that you, you alone, are responsible for actions.

The Truth in Politics….What does it say about Candidates?

It is unusual for Cranky Lizard to throw more than one contribution into the mix in each edition of The Local Paper.

Most unusual.

In this case, Cranky Lizard has been gobsmacked to see that the local labor mob are still running the nonsense about a nuclear plant on Bribie Island.

People who know this column will be aware that Cranky Lizard has a highly developed B/S radar system – and it is has been pinging itself crazy over this latest blatant attempt by the labor party to perpetuate the lie that the LNP will build a nuclear power plant on Bribie Island.

This arrant nonsense has been refuted. Loudly, often and unambiguously by the current local member.

The fact that the labor candidate keeps rolling out this rubbish indicates that the level of desperation for votes in the coming State Election has reached a hysterical level in the labor camp.

So, let us test them.

Beachmere Steps Up to Clean Up

Fast Christine’s team with just some of the rubbish collected.

Beachmere, once again, supported Carpets Clean Up Australia Day with a host of teams cleaning up around the area.

From one end of Beachmere to the other, from the northern tip near Bribie Island to the river in the south, site leaders organised teams, times and an assortment of buggies and barrows to travel to some out of reach areas.

Site leader, Christine Dillon, said that in her fifth year cleaning the southern end of the Conservation Park at Bishop Road there had been a reduction in the amount of rubbish collected.

“Last year we had over 20 bags. This year we filled about 10 bags, and the rubbish was not on the surface but had obviously been there some time.”

Glenda Sinclair-Gordon was a Site Leader on the northern side of the Conservation Park and was “terribly disappointed” with the amount of rubbish found.

“Our team of eleven worked for over two hours and filled over 50 bags, as well as about half a tonne of larger items, but we only just scratched the surface. We had to leave due to the tide coming in, and our trailer was very full, so we are planning on another clean up in the next few months.”

Both Christine and Glenda praised Anita Christian, Waste Minimisation Officer from Moreton Bay Regional Council, who has supported Clean Up Australia teams in Beachmere over the last few years and this year was no exception.

From sending out packs initially to organising collections, Anita has been a great help and organised access to inaccessible areas to help reduce the distance the rubbish had to be transported for collection. Anita also organised timely pick up of the rubbish which had been collected from each of the many sites around Beachmere which was applauded by teams and local residents.

Air-con backflip a win for kids – and the LNP

As part of it’s 150th Birthday Celebrations, Beachmere will stage a Sandgarden competition on Saturday, 16 May from 10am.

On the beach at Lehman Park near 3 Biggs Ave teams of two can join in all the fun of building their sandgarden – just like in the “old” days.

Sandgarden Competitions were a major event in the Moreton Bay Region from the 1920’s until the 1960’s, including at Beachmere.

Anticipating Autumn- Try growing some garlic!

Well, how about anticipating some cooler temps already! Yes, our summer’s in Queensland are hot and steamy by nature and after the welcome rains we received lately, the humidity has become exhausting for most, never mind for those of us working hard- outdoors physically. Also this month, on March 17th, is Saint Patrick’s Day, and besides the fact I have direct Irish heritage and I love to wear with pride a green shamrock on the day, it also happens to be the best time for planting out garlic cloves (bulbs) in the subtropics. There are a few varieties that are suitable for planting in the subtropics and some are also available to purchase online.

It is never recommended to plant, supermarket bought garlic though, especially from overseas, as most have been bleached to kill pathogens or irradiated, so buying fresh seed stock (bulbs) locally, is the responsible thing to do, you will get a more superior and robust variety that will retain its health benefits too. You can search the farmers markets for good organic garlic growers to buy your fresh stock from, such as ‘Super Natural Organics’, that service the Noosa Farmers Market every Sunday with their popular ‘Giant Russian’ garlic- when available, among many other certified organic fruits and veggies of course. See link here: www. snog.com.au. But if you have missed the opportunity to source any garlic locally, and you are time poor, then jump onto the ‘Green Harvest’ website to place an order. Some varieties recommended to plant by ‘Green Harvest’ in QLD are: ‘Glenlarge’ and ‘Italian Pink’ and ‘Italian late’. ‘Glenlarge’, was developed for the Qld climate by the Department of Primary Industry’s Research Station at Gatton- west of Brisbane. See link here: www.greenharvest.com.au The time to plant is the autumn equinox (first full moon in March), but you could plant them right up to the end of April but the later you plant, you could compromise on the bulbs size upon harvesting. Harvest is in approximately 6 to 9 months depending on the variety and local weather conditions. You can put the cloves in the fridge a few days before to chill them and to speed up germination. Best to plant the largest cloves from the outside of the bulb and place the individual cloves with the flat part (basal) side down and the pointy section up- just under the soil surface, in a rich compost and place a thin layer of sugar cane mulch over the whole lot also.

The Climbing Frangipani Chonemorpha fragrans

Chonemorpha fragrans, is undeniably a most beautiful flowering tropical vine, with its large white and fragrant, frangipani- like flowers, which also have a yellow throat and strong sweet scent, like its name sake- the Frangipani. The flower petals twist back resembling a propeller in appearance. Flowering is from spring to autumn.

Chonemorpha fragrans, is native to India and South East Asia but is not a true Frangipani, this vigorous vine has large green and glossy ovate leaves with prominent veins that can grow to 30cm long, and the vine itself grows to 7 metres tall and wide in cultivation, although they can reach the tops of tall trees in their native tropical environment. They are semi deciduous in our subtropical region, but they can tolerate full sun to part shade and prefer rich, free draining soil and the sunnier the aspect, the more profuse flowering can be expected. The Climbing Frangipani are perfect for screening on sturdy fences, pergolas or trellises that can handle their weight and form, they can be pruned back to control growth after flowering or if in dormancy. Propagation is by cuttings or seed. Just a delightful plant for that tropical-feel garden design element in the landscape and they will grow here on Bribie Island, if their soil moisture requirements are met in summer. Their scent is divine when in mass Flower!

Now autumn is here, it’s the time to get those garden beds enriched, as March is also a great time to plant out tomatoes, capsicum and eggplant or sow seeds of beetroot and peas or plant some flowers such as Dianthus, marigolds and sweet peas- to only name a few, into some well-prepared garden beds or large containers with compost mixed with composted manures and mulch with a feeder mulch like sugar cane, or lucerne which will protect the fine roots from harsh sunlight, conserve moisture and the bonus of it breaking down to improve the soil and microorganisms in time. With all the worries of the world

and the ‘Corona’- virus situation, it really brings home the importance of selfsufficiency as much as possible. We are so used to relying on supermarkets for our produce that if there is ever a hiccup in the supply chain, such as panic buying or bush fires and floods etc, there is nowhere to turn except to be more selfreliant. Drying foods such as banana’s, mangoes and strawberries in a food dehydrator is one way to conserve and store any surplus from harvesting your fresh fruits and vegetables as they are delicious and nutritious. It was a great to see last week the masses of mostly lemon-yellow butterflies that were flying all over Queensland’s south- east, including our Bribie Island and surrounding districts. The swarms were triggered off by the recent bout of wet weather after the prolonged drought conditions in 2019 and the recent hot and humid weather had sent them out in search for their favourite food source the Golden Shower tree, Cassia fistula and other Cassia or Senna species in the districts. The lemon migrant butterflyCatopsilia pomona, varies in wing colour from lemon to creamy white and the butterflies never seem to sit still longer enough for a photo, as they are on a mission to breed and lay eggs. One of my lovely customers in Bongaree, Susan, was a little apprehensive indeed when she soon realised her prized feature tree- Cassia fistula-in her front yard, was nearly defoliated of the new growth by the lemon migrant butterfly caterpillars- feasting enmasse. I quickly mentioned, “that it is natures pruning”, with a wry smile on my face, while hoping to alleviate her concerns after advising the tree will bounce back in due course, probably with more flowers than last year. Cassia fistula can put on a fantastic display when in flower but is considered an environmental weed in Qld and NT and care should be taken to not let the seed pods mature or escape into our bushland, but the butterflies love them dearly. And who can deny the beauty of the trees cascading golden floral display.

Speaking of worms, they have been hard to come by locally. Wazza the wormer, who sends worms down from Fraser Island, has told us that the sand has washed away so much that the worms have gone, too. Richard has said the same thing for Bribie ocean-side, so you may have as much fun buying baitworms, as fishing for the whiting!

Well, the fish will be there alright, when the pylons are being scraped! Josh and Steve have been spending the past few weeks fishing around Turner’s Camp, and have brought in some nice catches, including bream.

South of the bridge, Don and Doug took their Fishability Qld crew out for a competition day and added to their score with bream and sand crabs.

If you want to stay near the shore, going for whiting is lots of fun and has been running hot. Both sides of the island have got interesting spots – Banksia Beach, for example, and north of the first lagoon at Woorim. Look for a gutter close into the shore and cast your baitworm over the waves as they break.

Water temperatures have remained about 2 degrees above the longterm average, which is affecting fish behaviour and feeding. Most fish get sluggish in such warm water, and look for shade or deeper water.

Flathead are still playing hard-to-catch in the Passage; although the regular drops of rain have encouraged them out of the gutters, to come after a feed on the rising tide. With the poor water clarity, an early morning rising tide is a good time to toss some shallow or surface lures over the sand banks.

Rain was recorded on 20 days of the month; not always big falls but still a total of 365mm (wasn’t it handy, that it mostly fell at night!) The Passage has been stirred up a little, with visible colour coming from the creeks and being carried out on the ebb-tide.

Bream have made plenty of fishers happy this past month. There are lots of biggies out there, all through the Passage. Bream have also been getting excited and hungry in the unsettled weather, even if the water is warm. Karl and Jed found good fishing up at Mission Point, using pillies to bring in good-sized bream, as well as an estuary cod. They also tell us there were loads of catfish up there.

We had to wait a while for the start of the summer rains, but February has been a good month for greening the gardens, and for stirring up the waters around Bribie.

This time of the year is when the mangrove jacks are breeding - and hungry, too! Through February, the Passage and creeks have seen almost ideal conditions for them – a little murky, very warm and lots of unsettled weather. After the new moon in late February, targeting mangrove jack has been consistently successful; and the same should continue past the full moon in March. Late afternoons or before sunrise are the best times to try casting out around, preferably using live bait or strips of pillies or mullet. Soft or hardbody lures have also been effective.

These are just some of the faces of local volunteers keeping our community safe. They give up their time to help and inspire others and they do it without fear nor favour. They deserve our utmost respect and admiration.

Our rural fire brigades operate in areas not covered by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services urban (town) service and in the Pumicestone Electorate we are so fortunate to have the Toorbul and Pumicestone Rural Fire Services.

Both of our RFS’s have been deployed a number of occasions in the past months to assist with the southern bush fire crisis. Their stories of saving homes, businesses and lives are heroic.

Similarly, the Bribie Island State Emergency Service has been on notice with recent weather events and they’ve been out organising sandbags in case of localised flooding. These guys and gals are on call 24/7 and regularly assist other SES groups when needed. They are non-stop troopers!

As the patron of Marine Rescue Bribie Island, I cannot speak highly enough of the work they do in some of the most hazardous water conditions to keep boaties safe. It can be said, when the going gets tough, our crews get going!

Had a great visit with Sue and the team at Lagoon Creek Café, part of Caboolture Community Work Cooperative, a social enterprise established for local people with disability living in the Caboolture area.

It’s such a great initiative to assist people who have had mixed experiences with work and with trying to find work.

The Café is open Monday to Friday 8am to 2.30pm.

Pop along for a coffee and a treat. You can also join the Heart Foundation (slow paced) Walk around the Lagoon visiting historical sites of the area including a boiler used to pump water to Caboolture’s first train line and the Friends of Lagoon Creek Environmental Conversation Program. The walk leaves weekly (weather permitting) on Thursdays at 9:15am and is dog and pram friendly. Stroll for around 45–60 minutes and take it all in.

Terrific to welcome Bribie Island State High School students to Parliament House recently. A future State Member in the group perhaps!

Ocean Beach & Bribie Island National Park Visitor Management Strategy It’s been busy with Parliamenttosittings, holding jointinmobile If we were to sit a and waitfew for weeks the State Government get its act together consulting our offices and supporting our fabulous community groups.

Always great then to getwe’d in be waiting a community on the Bribie Island National Park Visitor Management Strategy, a quick walk at one of our wonderful beaches. very long time indeed!

In January 2019, I met with the Minister for Environment, Leeanne Enoch, about this very issue and she told me that I would be consulted by her Department (as would my community be) on this strategy. This is all about looking at ways we can better protect and preserve our beautiful beach and national park environment from further destruction by reckless 4WD users abusing the privilege of visiting our backyard.

It is now over 12 months since that meeting with Minister Enoch and still no word and no action from her or her Department on this important visitor management strategy. I have prodded the Minister about her commitment to me via Parliamentary processes and am still waiting her reply.

The Bribie Island National Park and Ocean Beach is an important environmental issue in our Electorate. I would be pleased to hear from you with your views and ideas on how we can manage the influx of visitors to these areas whilst maintaining our unique environment.
