Letter from Belinda Ferguson Welcome to issue 47, our LOCAL region is certainly looking a lot greener these days. This year we have started a reader’s corner for our keen gardeners to write to our resident horticulturist Mick O’Brien. You will find his tips in our Gardening section of the paper. I encourage you to write to me with your questions and Mick will answer them in the next issue.

It’s Valentine’s day on Friday, the LOCAL News hopes you do consider our local restaurants for that special dinner with your partner. They all need our support.

Hi Harvey, I have not eaten meat since I was fourteen (nearly 60 years ago) when I told my mum "I don't want to eat any more animals" and it was purely because I loved animals. Back in those days I was looked on as maybe someone who should be in Byron Bay. I am as healthy as a horse (just a tiny bit of hereditary cholesterol) and my Doctor makes very little money out of me. I played competitive tennis for over 40 years as well as doing a lot of physical work. On the other hand, I do not like how these "experts" think that because you don't want meat you must have something that smells and tastes like meat! For pity's sake, if I WANTED meat I would BUY it! It is not hard to get all your vitamins and minerals in other foods. Sometimes I think people are frightened by someone who is "different". I also agree with Paul McCartney of The Beatles who said...."if abattoirs were made of glass everyone would be a vegetarian".

Vivien Marsland IN RESPONSE Dear Vivien, Thank You for your interest in The Local Paper. The purpose of my comments was to throw some light onto the development of fake meat and the market forces at work behind this contradictory phenomenon. I agree with you about the health and lifestyle of people who do not eat meat; being vegetarian is a choice many people make with good and positive personal benefits. I also agree with you about the idea of abattoirs being made of glass… they, abattoirs, are not pleasant places but they serve a central purpose in our life, and, in this country, at least they

are clean, humane places with the lives of the animals being respected in the process. In my opinion, militant veganism with its associated lawbreaking and threatening behavior is vastly different from sensible people making deliberate and healthy choices about not eating meat. I am fortunate to be within the distribution area for your paper as otherwise I would not have the chance of reading Cranky Lizards insightful but pragmatic musings. I agree with most of what he said about bushfires, but I think he is a little off the mark about why people are not more proactive. I put it down to a large part of Aussie apathy.

If they cannot see it directly affecting them, they are inclined to not take too much interest and they have many more important things to think about.

However, it is now apparent that land management outside the cities impacts everyone [although some more directly than others].

The government has recently quietly outlined a plan for koala habitat protection in south-east Queensland, with plans to extend it to the rest of the state. Is it strange that the period for comment coincides with Christmas holidays? The plan will further impact landowners’ abilities to manage fuel loads and firebreaks. It impacts only those who are already retaining trees on their land and, as we have seen recently, fuel load places a big part in the severity of fires [and the survival of koalas]. The zoning will further restrict their use of the land and its resale value, leaving them to pay rates on land they cannot use, so in effect, a minority of private landowners are funding the government's koala protection activities.

I want to see koalas survive and flourish, so surely a better alternative would be to encourage landowner’s ability to manage koala habitat rather than imposing severe penalties which will result in potential future infernos.

Regards, Peter Marshall Dear Editor, I is sad to see what has happened to the Australian bush and wildlife, and we will soon have a chance to vote on the matter at coming elections.

But we can only vote for the people who stand, most of whom are woefully ignorant about the environment.

The first suggestion I offer is an improvement in education, making science compulsory.

I did my bit to educate high school students during my working years, but most students avoided Biology in favour of subjects which would help them make money. I’m still teaching at U3A on a voluntary basis, but only three out of the 2000 members are interested in our biosphere. That makes me sad too.

What life experiences do they have?

Where did they spend most of their lives? Has their education covered an understanding of environmental science? After all, there is no point in developing the economy if we destroy the environment.

What sort of things do they see as possible for dealing with climate change? Caring for the aged who suffer from heat more than younger people, is just one aspect. What action would they personally like to see, beyond the party platform?

H.Beneke Dear Editor I want to congratulate your paper for publishing Cranky Lizard’s column on Australia’s Bushfires. A very practical viewpoint on exactly how it is. Nothing to do with “Climate Change” and has been going on forever. There has been too much ignorance for too long on how to control the Australian bush. Praise be that common sense in managing it is raising its head.

The bush is there for mankind to enjoy and should be respected in managing same. Also sharks , crocodiles and many other species which are there for our enjoyment but at the moment it appears mankind is there for their enjoyment.

In fifty years man will look back on the current era and will wonder what went wrong with our thinking. But that’s another story.

Thank you again Cranky Lizard, well put.

Steve Warner Crikey Harvey, we stopped eating meat over 40 years ago, not because we wanted to save the planet (not as big a thing back then) but because being a meat eater is a very cruel process for the poor lamb, cow, pig whatever. We think the argument that people give up meat because of CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) emissions is so much hot air if you’ll excuse the pun. Actually CO2 gas is only 27% of the emissions, the others are Methane (CH4) 44% and Nitrous Oxide N2O 29%. The Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) should be making us all a lot happier than we are and maybe you imbibed too much of it when you wrote your tongue in the cheek article.

Seriously though, people give up meat for many reasons which include religion and the biggies in the Western world which are Health, Moral (animal cruelty) and yes Environmental as the many predictions and statistics that have been published state quite obviously that in the future we will be having difficulties feeding the ever burgeoning population of the world and it is well documented that growing plant matter for human consumption is a far more efficient way of producing protein for humans. It takes 10 kg of grain to produce 1 kg of meat and worldwide 13 billion hectares of forest is lost every year converting land for agricultural use, and then we wonder why we are getting longer and longer droughts, and here Harvey we could use your Einstein quote about only two things are infinite, the cosmos and human stupidity.... By the way Harvey, don’t worry too much about the salt, the recommended daily intake is under 2300 milligrams, so perhaps your arteries will be under more risk with your carnivore diet.

As for your comment regarding sheep farts, Australia has and has always had roughly 3 times the sheep population of New Zealand and incidentally the

Brad O’Carroll is on a mission to contribute to the future prosperity of the Bribie Island Community. Brad is a local

Cleaning Drains!

Master Plumber on Bribie Island and along with his wife Karen, have devoted their lives to supporting people and businesses across the wider community.

In her role with Ozcare, Karen spends a lot of her time working within the Age Care Services as well as partnering with Brad to run the Plumbing Business and support diverse charities and community clubs in their spare time. As part of a mixed family, Brad and Karen share 6 children and 8 grandchildren so life is exciting and sometimes hectic. As Brad said, “I was lucky enough to meet and marry the most beautiful, loving and caring person in Karen, although I must say our Christmas Day numbers these days are the size of a football team.”

I had the pleasure to meet Brad for breakfast at the Social Café in Bongaree on Bribie Island to talk everything community, passions and business. When I first met Brad, I was immediately taken by his passion for life, family and community. Brad presents with a big smile, clean cut and well branded in his Plumbing Bribie Island Uniform. I would have to say from the ‘get go’ that I have never witnessed a person with so much passion and willingness to communicate so generously. Unfortunately, I had to condense our 2-hour recording into 2500 words – that was tough. After we ordered a few coffees and breakfast, we began our chat.

Prior to moving from Brisbane to Bribie Island 9 years ago, Brad gained over 35-years-experience across residential, commercial and industry gas and plumbing which included a distinguished 7-year career in Brisbane working as Secretary of the Plumbers Union and serving on numerous boards.

Notably, Brad led significant change in the advancement of trades education across Queensland and became a specialist in Corporate Governance, Strategic Planning and Risk Management. I could go on and on with Brad’s contribution to his profession and his board representations, however I will refer our readers to Brad’s website @ www.plumbingbribieis.com – it’s impressive reading.

Initially when I read Brads’ professional history, I developed a mental picture of a battle-hardened unionist from Brisbane who was probably going to give me chapter and verse on everything ‘workers rights’ and ‘Climate Change.’

Not to be – I met an educated, politically balanced, compassionate and caring family man devoted to working with business and community. Brad said,

“I have been blessed in life in so many ways. I had a great relationship and upbringing with my grandparents and parents and come from a loving and caring family - I think that has provided me with solid values and foundations,” he said. “They say, beside every great person is an even greater person and that’s my wife Karen - We are a strong team. Leaving Brisbane and moving to Bribie was the best thing I ever did - apart from marrying Karen of course.

We have the most amazing community a community that cares - you walk down the street on Bribie Island and everyone says hello. Whether you are a tourist here for a day or you’ve lived here all your life, you get treated the same,” he said. “I came to Bribie to semi-retire and contribute to the community but then decided to setup a plumbing business which has really taken off. As our interview went on, I began to realize the extent to which Brad is focused on providing good advice, good service and quality products. Brad even showed me a picture of a Hot Water installation focusing on the copper pipe bends and workmanship – a proud tradesman.

Brad said, “After every job I’ve done throughout my life, I always ask myself one question, ‘Will they use me for the next 20 years.’ If the answer is yes, I have succeeded.”

Despite running a plumbing service, it is obvious that Brad has many strings to his bow which apparently includes being branded as a ‘foodie’ and from what I sited on Brad’s phone, food is something he takes very seriously – the home chef and the public reviewer.

So much so that he convinced his friend and owners on Delfina's at The Emporium in Brisbane if he could spend 1 month in the kitchen learning and observing food prior to moving to Bribie Island. Brad gives most food venues a wrap in the Region – in particular, The Jetty Restaurant for its quality and presentation – perhaps we might have to engage Brad as a new food reviewer at The Local Newspaper – watch this space.

As Brad says, “Bribie has so much to offer both in food and entertainment.

Karen and I enjoy the local music scene which boasts many very good artists playing at various venues.”

With this all said, there is a greater goal and passion of Brad O’Carroll and that is to unite the business community under the banner, ‘Support Local Businesses and Families and Buy Local.’ Brad said, “I am encouraging every business to contribute to our

future and become a member of our Chamber of Commerce. By doing this, we can provide a stronger voice and better represent our community needs at a local and state levels,” he said. “There are so many businesses in our community that can contribute to strengthening our Business Network.

To me it’s all about supporting local business. When we spend money locally, it has a positive impact on the wider community - Local businesses employ local families and support recreation and charity organizations – that’s why I believe that we need to do more together to encourage local spending. As an example, I happen to use Dossels Engineering on Bribie Island as one of my suppliers, but they are ‘my first phone call and only phone call.’ To me the community of Bribie is such an amazing place, but we must all contribute to make our Bribie Community future proof,” he said. “We shouldn’t take for granted what we have today. Our nation, including both sides of politics, fought hard to get where we are today but apathy could see it all disappear.”

Brad and Karen spend a lot of time with other volunteers helping at charity events across Bribie. Brad tells the funny story of when he received a phone call from an old mate inviting him to a Sunday BBQ. His mate also asked if he would pick up a cold room on the way to the BBQ. As it turned out, it was the annual Loins Camp Quality BBQ for 600 people which was a great day – Brad had a ball and naturally was in his element networking and sharing stories.

Karen would do anything for the Bribie Community and both Brad and Karen were keen to point out that they had no interest in ‘blowing their trumpet’ in this story – I said, “That’s my job.” As Brad says, “It’s doesn’t matter if someone needs a hand to get up the stairs or to install a hot water system – they are both as important. Last Xmas Eve, I had a call from an old lady that had water coming into her bedroom floor.

As plumbers, we all know that you can make a fortune at Christmas, but there was nothing she could have done to stop that leak. In the end I don’t think I even charged her. As Tradespeople, we go into a lot of homes and see people struggling - I believe that it’s our duty as citizens to help people where possible.

I am not advocating free services; however I believe that sometimes you get more by giving than you do by taking. Our goal is to make what we love about this place better so that our kids and grandkids can enjoy it - To leave behind a society organized and structured but free for all to enjoy.”

I walked away from my meeting with Brad O’Carroll feeling an immense sense of relief – a sense of pride that we have people like Brad and Karen in our society – people that I would trust because they genuinely care and take positive actions towards others which forms the basis for human kindness, understanding and peace.

Two of the best sayings I was taught as an apprentice were:

- Never ruin a Job for a sixpence worth of tar - People will soon forget the price but they will never forget a bad job.

39 years later I still look and quote to myself those two quotes on every job I do.

How do you maintain a healthy relationship while running your business together?

Share your goals and be kind in the good times - share what’s good about the day and in the bad time set a time to talk it through. Most important is to “listen to understand not to respond” and wait 6 seconds before responding try to be considerate.

What type of plumbing service do you focus on?

Our plumbing business focusses on most plumbing needs but mainly on maintenance including hot water assessments and replacements. We have recently engaged with a drain cleaning and detection business, Jetting4Plumbers which is a state-ofthe-art drain detection and cleaning service. I engaged Jetting for Plumbers to deal with drain cleaning and drainage problems – the system is amazing because it records and reports on the drain system as well as pinpointing and photographing any damaged or broken pipes. It is awesome to have access to such advanced technology.

This club has been gradually growing for the past few years now but this year has been a record. Amanda ,the President has inducted some new members into the club every single month since she took over last February. Why is that you might ask? Well news articles, friends telling friends and new people on the Island who are looking for a good group to join.

In this photograph you can see Amanda with this month’s new members and now we have a waiting list ready to join just as soon as we agree to increase our total numbers.

The club is 30 years old in February which shows how popular it has been over the years. There is something

for everyone every week. You can go for a walk and finish up for coffee and cake. Or you could decide you are fit enough and just go for the coffee and cake and chat with friends. There is a dinner every month trying all the various eateries on the Island. There is a fishing group who meet up for a BBQ breakfast before heading off to fish. I couldn’t possible tell you how many fish they catch !!!! There is a monthly meeting with an excellent outside speaker and we have had some terrific speakers.

In February we have a formal dinner party to celebrate 30 years of this amazingly successful club.

Over the past twenty years, the world has witnessed the advancements and progressions of everything from technology to education. Perhaps one of the largest advancements that has occurred not just in the past twenty years, but the past hundred, has been the progression of women’s rights and the portrayed stereotypical social image of what a woman should be. Looking back on history, we see the Suffragettes fighting for the right to vote, women taking over all forms of work industries and society slowly changing as women fought for their recognition and equal stance. International Women’s Day, on the 8th of March, not only recognises the development and evolution of female rights in the past but also looks towards the future and the importance of continuing to fight for equality. Whilst in Australia, we are lucky enough to see women pursuing their desired careers, often backed with years of education or at least the opportunity to access learning facilities- this is not the case for all women across the world.

Around the globe, young girls are still being denied the opportunity to attend school and learn basic academic skills.

Issues such as the wage gap, workplace inequality and in certain countries an overall lack of basic human rights remain prevalent problems that must be addressed. Take for example Saudi Arabia, a country that only legalised a women’s right to drive in 2018, just two years ago!

Additionally, note America, even in the 21st century the powerhouse country is yet to offer paid maternity leave to women.

The importance of the 8th of March is to recognise the inequalities that still exist

in our modern society and work towards inspiring change within future generations and offering girls, and women, across the world the opportunities and rights they deserve. In more recent times we have seen the world band together in working towards a brighter future for younger generations. The United Nations are the instigators of various different days throughout the year all which promote and encourage countries and different businesses to support and fund the efforts to achieve equality. Movements such as MeToo and Time’s Up have been instrumental in raising awareness of work place discrimination and have been the contributing factors to marches and rallies which have gained worldwide media attention. Many business and educational institutions have funded and offered their support to programs based in industries such as STEM and engineering in hopes to inspire girls across the world. Through these continued efforts and inspirational figures, such as Jacinta Ardern and Malala Yousafzai, we are slowly getting closer to equality. This is also achieved through charities across the world which support education and provide women around the world with the opportunities to pursue their ambitions. It is saddening to see that heading into a new decade, this age long issue is still making headlines around the world. Whilst we have seen such significant change, it remains more important than ever to push for equality and gain the basic human rights desperately needed for many across the world. Oprah Winfrey said it best when she stated “Step out of the history that is holding you back. Step into the new story you are willing to create”.

Hundreds of travellers screened for Coronavirus at Brisbane International Airport Over 500 travellers have been assessed for coronavirus since screening started at Brisbane International Airport on 1 February as authorities continue efforts to counter the threat of the novel coronavirus.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the screening was part of efforts to stop the virus.

“Queensland clinicians are assisting with screening all incoming passengers on flights from mainland China for symptoms,” Mr Miles said.

“So far, about 205 inbound passengers who showed no coronavirus symptoms have been advised to self-isolate as a precaution. This is a new virus and we are doing everything we can to stop its spread.

“Two people have been taken to hospital for further assessment.”

Across Queensland, since 22 January 2020, more than 370 patients have been tested for the disease.

Tough new penalties for distracted drivers started on the 1st of February 2020.

Queensland has introduced the toughest penalties in Australia for drivers illegally using mobile devices behind the wheel.

From February 1, drivers caught on the phone will be fined $1000 and lose four demerit points.

Those caught a second time within 12 months will see double demerits applied and could lose their licence.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the tough new measures were necessary to stamp out distraction.

“We’re getting tough on distracted drivers using mobile phones because it is costing lives on our roads,” Mr Bailey said.

“Thirty-three lives were lost to distraction on Queensland roads in 2018 and more than 1300 people were hospitalised in crashes caused by distracted driving.

“We believe that number was underreported too, because it’s difficult for investigators to confirm the link between phone use and these crashes.”

Mr Bailey said distracted driving was a deadly driving trend akin to what drink driving was in the 1970s and 1980s.

“A driver’s response time while texting is comparable to that of a driver with a blood alcohol reading of between 0.07 and 0.10,” Mr Bailey said.

“Through random breath testing and huge investments in driver education campaigns, our society agrees drink driving is not on.

“Now it’s time for all of us to send that message loudly and clearly to distracted

drivers; don’t reach for the phone to send a quick text or check social media.

“Put the phone in the glovebox or set it to Do Not Disturb so you’re not distracted by it.

“It’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others.”

Mr Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was also pushing ahead to trial new camera technology being used in NSW that could catch drivers with phones in their hands or laps.

“I’ve seen the technology in action. It works and I have no doubt it will save lives,” Mr Bailey said.

“We’re looking to start trials with this new camera technology in the coming months, so we’ll share more details about that with the community once we have everything in place.

“These cameras are very mobile, so they can be moved around across urban and regional areas.

“I think, like mobile speed cameras, there needs to be that random element so drivers know they could be caught anywhere, anytime.”

New penalties for distracted driving in Queensland came into effect on 1 February 2020.

Bribie Red Bench a region first!

Bribie Island near the Bongaree Jetty will be one of Moreton Bay Region’s to launch the Red Bench over the coming months as part of a state wide initiative to raise awareness of domestic violence and elder abuse.

Hairdressers with Heart, a not-forprofit organisation founded to address domestic violence issues, has worked closely with local member for Division 1, Cr Brooke Savige to advocate a red painted park bench to be located near the Bongaree jetty.

Cr Savige said the Bribie Red Bench will be fully funded by the Moreton Bay Regional Council as part of a wider plan to roll out one Red Bench across each of the region’s divisions to coincide with Domestic Violence Week in May. Cr Savige has welcomed the Red Bench initiative, which will also include the installation of plaques on all benches to further reinforce the message that domestic violence of any type will not be tolerated.

“One woman every week is dying from domestic violence. Instances of elder abuse are on the rise,” Cr Savige said.

“Our young people and our families are experiencing domestic and family violence at an alarming rate.

“But these are not statistics, these are not just numbers, these are people.

These are someone’s mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter. Which is why the Red Bench initiative is so important to me.”

Since its inception in 2012, Hairdressers with Hearts has set the goal of empowering the country’s 55,000 plus hairdressers and barbers with the support, training and resources to assist communities’ capacities to address the issues of domestic violence and elder abuse.

“It is so important that domestic violence and elder abuse victims feel comfortable enough to be able to reach out and take that first step in getting help,” Ms Colvin said.

Nostalgic day for local couple

At the time this article is being written there are still many ongoing bushfires across Australia.

Here on Bribie Island we are lucky to not currently be under threat of encroaching bushfires, but as many in our community have family and friends in other states and territories The Local Island and Surrounds News believes it is important to provide what information we can.

Statistics from early January show that over 12 million acres have been burned across Australia, millions of animals have died and at least 24 people have lost their lives.

But the country is not without hope, firefighters from every state and territory have been doing their very best to battle this crisis.

First Officer for Rocksberg Moorina Brigade Rural Fire Services, Mathew Poor and his brigade have been to New South Wales and Victoria to help.

Having 20 years of fire fighting under his belt Mr Poor noted that every bushfire is unique in its own way.

“In Queensland it’s all calmed down, like we’ve had a fair bit of rain but in New South Wales and Victoria it’s still quite…it’s devastating.”

“The [fires] that we’re assisting with in New South Wales and Victoria are very large, dynamic, intense fires which is something that us in Queensland haven’t really experienced much in the last decade.” He said.

At times like this when the country is being ravaged by natural disaster it is important for communities to band together. Across our beautiful country people, and organisations have been fundraising and volunteering where they can to provide aid.

Celebrities including Celeste Barber, Chris Hemsworth, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban have made large donations for bushfire relief. ANZ, Macquarie, NAB, Westpac, Commonwealth and other banks have also chipped in.

And large businesses like Qantas and Woolworths are also giving what they can. Even international organisations and celebrities are pitching in; Elton John made a $1m donation.

Local businesses here in the Bribie Island and surrounding regions are doing their bit too. The Bribie Island Cinema donated $2 from every ticket sold on Sunday January 19th to support bushfire relief efforts, this was done in conjunction with other cinemas across Australia.

By the time this article is printed the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology will have hosted their fundraising banquet ‘A Crusader’s Journey’ on Saturday February 8th. All the profits from the dinner were donated to the small town of Genoa that had lost nearly everything to the bushfires.

Many local businesses and politicians have contributed to help with fundraising efforts, chipping in to assist with the ‘A Crusader’s Journey’ bushfire relief fundraising dinner.

In January the hashtag Authors For Fireys (or Authors For Firies) was used as an online auction to raise funds for Australian firefighters.

Running between January 6th and January 11th the auction was setup with winning bidders having to donate the amount they bid to a specified charity (nominated by the author) and then send through a copy of their receipt to receive their reward.

The auction saw big name Aussie authors as well as a number of indie authors offering books, in person meetups, editing, inclusion of bidders as characters in their work in progress manuscripts, and a whole range of other services to raise funds.

A webpage was set-up to work in conjunction with the auction and explain details for those involved. To date the total confirmed donations raised by Authors For Fireys is $511,274.

Australian authors are working on even more fundraising efforts with a number of different groups bringing out charity anthologies.

Australian Charity Anthologies:

• Burning Love and Bleeding Hearts edited by Louise Zedda Sampson and Chris Mason – A charity magazinesized flash fiction anthology releasing on February 14th. For this anthology all proceeds will be donated to Red Cross Australia and fund matched by Microsoft.

• Stories of Hope by Aussie Speculative Fiction – This anthology does not have a set release date at the time of writing this article but is set for release in February. All proceeds from this anthology will be donated to the Australian Red Cross and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Bushfire Emergency Fund.

• Australia Burns from Impact Comics – A bushfire benefit comics anthology featuring work from over 24 comics creators around the world. All profits will be going to bushfire recovery related charities.

• Burning Dreams: An Australian Bushfire Charity Effort compiled by Madeline L. Stout – A multi-genre short story anthology to help benefit those plagued by the bushfires, no release date has been specified yet.

• The Fires That Bind Us Anthology

by Little Quail Press – A romance anthology to help with bushfire relief, no release date has been specified yet.

Whilst the fires continue to burn across our country it is important to remember every little bit helps, the clean up and recovery effort will be ongoing long after the last embers have died.

A day to remember, 49 years ago on February 20.

February 20 will mark a milestone for inspirational residents Barry and Ann France as they celebrate their 49th wedding anniversary.

Throughout their marriage the communityminded couple has dedicated a significant amount of their time to causes and helping others, most of which has been achieved over the 31 years they have resided on Bribie Island.

A former bank manager, Barry was instrumental in raising $20,000 locally for a cause close to his heart: trying to help to eradicate polio as his brother was severly affected by the condition. Barry, Ann and Bribie Island Rotary Club were awarded with a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of their contribution and effort to the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.

“Another cause we are also passionate about is an event started by the Dubbo South Rotary Club is Destination Outback which has raised more than $1 million for the Royal Flying Doctor service and supporting many other worthy causes,”she said.

Twenty one years ago the couple decided to enter real estate with the purchase of a real estate agency from Ken Mackay (now known as R&W).

“At one time we had three real estate offices and 29 staff at the height of the real estate boom,” Barry said. “We have provided a lot of employment for the island and we’re proud of that.”

Barry is now chairman of the Bribie Island Bolws Club and Ann a passionate photographer in her spare time. They have two children, Scott, a prominent local builder, Lisa, an enviromental scientist and former State Member for Pumicestone, and three beautiful grandsons.

The couple’s wedding anniversary will be a nostagic day for Barry and Ann, taking a trip down memory lane in their 1955 FC Holden.

“It is the same model of our first car when I met Ann and when we had our children. It is very sentimental to us,” Barry said.

Grassroots approach driving candidate

Community service and justice is what has driven Karen Harris to stand as a candidate for Division 2 of Moreton Bay Regional Council.

It only took Ms Harris one unpleasant customer service experience to decide not only did she deserve to be respected but everyone else in her electorate.

Division 2 encompasses Narangba, Burpengary, Deception Bay, Morayfield, North Harbour, Caboolture, Ningi and Beachmere.

“I want to represent the people of my community and what better way to serve the community than represent it,” Ms Harris said.

“There is no better place worthy of solid, trustworthy representation at the grass roots level. This is about us and what we work hard for.”

Ms Harris’ career has spanned both private and public service, and personal enterprise.

“Through my various roles I have gained great insights into what really matter: people and community.

Community development has also featured strongly in Ms Harris’ everyday life.

“There are some exciting new projects taking shape in our region, many changes occurring within the Moreton Bay Regional Council.”

Those changes will include a proposed university at Petrie and the development of the old paper mill site at Petrie.

“I am pleased to put myself forward to be part of this change.” Ms Harris said.

ANOTHER BIRTHDAY!

Fit Beyond 50 turned NINE on the 6th of February and this birthday made me consider what reaching this milestone means to me.

Fit Beyond 50 was born from a frustrating Thursday night standing in a gym where I worked. With me was a female client in her 40s who had never been to a gym before. I was trying to convince her that stepping into that crowded weights room, dripping with the pungent aroma of unwashed young males, was going to help her become happier and healthier. This wasn’t easy to do thanks to the thumping loud Hip-hop music drowned out by the crashing sounds of weights being dumped to the floor.

Meanwhile I’m frantically searching the room for one piece of equipment not in use that would be suitable for my client. The gym owner had told me to “just spend 30 mins with her on a treadmill”, but this wasn’t what my client needed and honestly that’s a Personal Training cop out!

Daily I was frustrated that I couldn’t train my clients to reach their best because planning workouts was a hit and miss affair around other gym members. The noise from loud

thumping music made it impossible to give my clients the attention they deserved, and I was expected to measure clients standing where everyone could see!

Nightly I was grumbling to hubby “There has got to be a better way! I need a room for a client and just me, every piece of equipment available, totally private and no TVs featuring semi-naked girls gyrating to hiphop” So together we hatched a plan, we lost a two rooms in our house and gained our first Fit Beyond 50 studio. When Andrew began training clients 7 years ago, we also lost half our lounge to gain another studio, giving us the ability to increase classes to keep up with demand.

Fit Beyond 50 has well and truly passed the scary business milestones – the 2 year graveyard where businesses go to die and the 5 year wall where the owners crash. While we constantly ensure we stay up to date with the best methods (and not crazy fads) to help our clients become confident, stronger, faster, leaner and most of all happier.

Over those nine years I’ve cringingly seen fitness fads come and go. There was the Commando Crazypants Bootcamps where clients were screamed at (to encourage them?!?)

Crossfitting Cults that keep Physiotherapists and Chiropractors busy. Boxfitting workouts thumping out wrist and shoulder injuries and weight/dance classes with a beat perfect for enhancing lower back injuries.

Senior Gentle Band Strength Exercises Before You Start

Bands are a great way to add resistance to your exercise program. They can be purchased cheaply from Kmart Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Please start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the same as the gentle band exercise we do in our Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one arm at a time – think about your body, does one arm have better movement than the other?

Is one elbow more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support.

Band exercises can be a fun activity but will only show benefits if they are done regularly.

Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your strength. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Band Chest Press Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Bring band UNDER your armpits – hold on to both ends of the band Push band out hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pushes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Band Seated Row Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Place band UNDER BOTH feet – hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band backwards and try and squeeze your shoulder blades together hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest Band Bicep

Band Bicep Curl

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit on the band or if it is long enough place under both feet Hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band up towards your shoulder hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Band Chest Pull

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Hold on to the band with both hands at a point where you have a little slack in the band Pull the band out as far as you can while holding it steady at chest height. Hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” If you find it too difficult release some of the band to make it easier.

Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

I’ve angrily watched trainers scream at clients as they crawl amongst dogpoo, and run with logs overhead, only to sadly hear that those clients discovered “The Best fitness programme ever” is now out of fitness fashion with trainers disappearing with a years’ worth of gym fees.

Throughout those years adverts on TV have promised the body of a God or Goddess, as long as you consume their expensive magic beans, yet, the obesity issue still grows. Meanwhile, here we are, doing what we do, for nine years with clients achieving real, proven, results.

Like the client whose increased flexibility means she can once again do up bra straps without assistance.

Bribie Respite and Support Services offers a weekly program of aged care day respite at our centre which focuses on caring for people living with dementia.

We provide the highest quality of care and assistance for older members of our community to enjoy a day away from home.

Above all, we want to improve the quality of life of the people who come to us as well as providing ongoing practical and emotional support to their long-term carers and families.

Over the last 30 years, we have developed a range of therapeutic activities for older people; activities that extend them socially as well as support them emotionally.

Research shows that socialising and recreational activities slows the progression of ageing and dementia.

These activities are also proven to contribute significantly to personal wellness and satisfaction.

Our aged care program of activities is developed by qualified care staff, with lots of input from our clients. Clients choose which activities they want to do each week from a range that includes Wii golf, bowls, dance, physiotherapistled activity, craft, and conversation and much more.

Our daily aged care program consists of:

10.00am Morning Tea Our day begins with Morning Tea at the Centre or on location at one of our destinations. Morning Tea is a time for social chat and the development of friendship.

10.30-12.00 Diversional TherapyBased Activities We then break up into group or individual activities designed to facilitate physical and cognitive engagement in a social atmosphere. All the activities are chosen by our clients.

12.00-1.00pm Lunch A leisurely lunch is enjoyed between 12pm and 1pm. Lunch choices consist of home cooked meals, freshly made sandwiches and desserts, all prepared on site.

1.00-2.30pm Diversional TherapyBased Activities After lunch everyone enjoys a selection of activities from the program.

2:30pm Afternoon Tea Activities stop and afternoon tea is enjoyed.

3.00pm Boarding the Bus for Home Everyone boards the buses from 3 pm to be returned home by 4 pm.

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Ernie-James continued his education in prosthetic dentistry and completed a Master of Dental Prosthetics in 2013, where he was awarded, The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Clinical Award. This includes, supervising postgraduate students during their clinical sessions, supervising both dental technology and dental science undergraduates during their technical laboratory sessions, lecturing clinical prosthetic theory, and exam moderation.

Currently, Ernie-James is completing a professional doctorate in Psychology.

As a practicing dental prosthetist, Ernie-James is a member of the Australian Dental Prosthetist Association (ADPA) Clinically, his primary focus is on patient care, understanding and education, delivering a detailed research and evidence based approach towards treatment planning and prosthetic dental care.

On the 6th of February, a truck lost control on the Bribie Island Bridge heading onto the Island, the truck hit the very last side Palin on the pedestrian walkway. The Truck came screaming to a holt on the vacant allotment and destroyed the tyres. It was very lucky not to hit any pedestrians or any other vehicles, there we no casualties only to the Bridge.

Even More of a reason to get a new bridge some would say. Too many accidents now on the bridge some community members would say.

Signature Bribie Island Art Prize calling This year, Bribie Island Community Arts Centre’s signature event, the Matthew Flinders Art Prize, is expected to draw more entries than before at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre.

Now in its 22nd year, it remains an open prize exhibition, with no set categories. Artists may create in any media. All details are on the entry form which can be downloaded from the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre’s website https://www.bribieartscentre.com.au/ or collected at the Arts Centre 191 Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach, Tuesday to Sunday 9am – 4pm. Phone 3408 9288.

Entry registration date is Saturday June 28. The entry fee is $45 per piece ($35 for BICAS members) with a maximum of two artworks each. Early birds who enter by Friday June 20 save $5 per piece.

July 11 is the delivery date to the Arts Centre. Gala Opening night for the event in the Matthew Flinders Gallery is Friday July 17, with the exhibition running until August 7.

Organising committee chairman Stephanie White said the MFAP event grew incrementally each year and 2020 looked to be on track to follow this trend. The art prize is a welcome gathering point and focus for local and visiting artists from around the region and interstate. Stephanie said the event also relied heavily on the generosity of local sponsors, who will hopefully team up with BICAS again in 2020.

WATER WATER EVERYWHERE

I am sure that having read this title you will already be saying to yourself the line …..”but not a drop to drink”.

I am sure most readers know this famous line, but perhaps not all know that it is from a long poem, written in 1798, by Samuel Coleridge Taylor.

In fact the full verse of his longest major poem titled “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” is actually ; Water Water Everywhere ……and all the boards did shrink Water Water everywhere …..nor any drop to drink.

It is interesting that these few lines of an old poem have found their way into our collective memory.

That is because we are all very aware and dependant on Water, for everything in life on this earth.

Water is Life

There are so many different aspects of Water that impact us all , including Rain, Drought, Floods, Irrigation, Dams, Catchments and run off.

We have had a very long period of drought , followed by devastating bush fires in recent months, then flooding rain ……so public awareness if high.

Things may have changed dramatically again in the two weeks since I wrote this article.

Help us Lobby the State Government, we need a New Bridge - Sign our Petition

The Bribie Island Bridge & Road Community Reference Committee (BIBR CRC) is starting a petition for a new Bribie Island Bridge.

BIBR CRC is a recently formed group dedicated to advocating on behalf of the Bribie Island community to get the best results for Bribie Island Bridge with additional lanes. And after concluding their first meeting on 4th of December, they’ve decided the Bribie Bridge is a top priority.

The committee is not a decision-making body but rather will perform an advisory and consultative role. It shall perform this role by investigating and finding reports on the bridge and its condition, evaluating the current status quo of traffic movement/ volume, and exploring previous planning projects undertaken by the Government.

Acting on behalf of the community BIRB will be meeting with all levels of government and will be inviting the State Minister for Roads and Transport to their meetings along with the heads of the Department of Roads.

This newly formed group will provide a forum for discussion, vision planning and feedback encompassing the views and ideas of local residents. And will be providing an additional channel for the State Member to inform, seek feedback and be proactive in the community.

Made up of local Bribie and Ningi residents and small business owners, the committee encourages the community to have their say, communicate concerns, and discuss what they would like to see.

This presentation will be very informative for everyone, and is intended to provide a broad overview and general knowledge.

The presentation will cover many aspects of Water in Australia , including climatic zones and rainfall, water resources, river systems, artesian water, urban water, desalination, recycling, dams, rural water, irrigation, salinity as well as a brief look at some major projects such as the Snowy Mountains scheme, the Ord River / Lake Argyle project and the current debacle with the Murray – Darling Basin.

The presentation is a U3A “Insight” session on 28th February at 1pm at the U3A Community Hall on First Avenue..

It is open to members and the general public for an entry fee of just $2 which includes afternoon tea and a chance to ask questions and meet the speaker.

Phil Williams will also reveal information about a long discussed project, to divert large quantities of water from North Queensland, to create new irrigation areas in Western Queensland.

This is known as the “New Bradfield Scheme” and has been around since it was first proposed in 1938, and is again on the political agenda in Queensland.

The presentation will be of great interest to everyone.

Cranky Lizard Speaks Who Owns Rain Water?

Australia is a parched continent.

And, it has been that way for a very, very long time because regular rainfall on this continent is fickle.

Aboriginal people, living Australia long before European Settlement, understood this and were assiduous in preserving their natural sources of water. In Cranky Lizard’s experience, which is centred around the North of Australia and Central Australia, they went to great lengths to protect their various sources of water, leaving small piles of stones to indicate, to those who understood the message, that water was close and available.

In their stories, there has never been any suggestion that water was wasted although there were territorial disputes, resolved by violence if necessary, over the rights and usage of water: sound familiar?

Human beings cannot make water in large quantities. We can distil water, we can make potable water from seawater, we can shift water around through the use of pipes and pumps, we can filter greywater and sewerage into fresh, clean water by the use of various technologies that are available to us, we can store water in large dams and reservoirs, we can use the kinetic energy stored in water to make electrical energy – but we cannot make water.

Cranky Lizard knows that it is redundant to comment that water is life – but it is!

Without water, human life cannot exist.

All of the water available to humans falls onto the Earth in the form of rain, or dew or maybe even snow. Whichever way you describe it, precipitation, dew or snow is a gift from nature delivered according to the vagaries of weather patterns; all of which are totally beyond the command of humans. Where it falls and how much of it falls is not decided by humans. Cranky Lizard is aware of the seeding technology applied to clouds to force rain but, frankly….have we ever produced regular quantities of rainfall from this process? Cranky Lizard thinks not!!!

Cranky Lizard has been galvanized into print over the outrageous and impossibly arrogant presumption of some State Governments; namely the Queensland State Government and the South Australian State Government that they own the rain that falls on a farmer’s property and is being stored in dams on that property.

Since the Federation of the Australian States in 1901, rights to water which has fallen as rain on private land has been held in common law in Australia and, indeed, the Commonwealth of Australia still upholds that position. The rainwater which falls on private property belongs to the owner or occupier of the property.

Much has already printed about these matters, many meetings have been held with bureaucrats from various Local Government bodies, explanations have been offered, waffle has been waffled in vast quantities: Cranky Lizard read one

reason for this water levy was to enable work to be done with farmers on the Northern Plains in relation to climate change!!

Now, what does that bloody mean? It is gobbledygook, that is what it is.

Think about those words for a moment; “ work to be done with farmers on the Northern Plains in relation to climate change. “ Cranky Lizard can find no evidence of any work being done on the Northern Plains of South Australia in relation to climate change that can be associated with charging landholders on the Fleurieu Peninsula for rain falling on their land. Just can’t find it !! That does not mean it is not happening – just can’t find it.

Nevertheless, there is a case for charging for water provided by Government Utilities to the general public and industry for domestic and industrial purposes.

Obviously, there are costs associated with processing water, distributing water through networks of pipelines and sophisticated pumping machinery to move the water and to maintain some reasonable pressure in the pipes so when water is delivered to households and factories, it can be put to sensible use.

And, all that is as it should be.

So, let us shift our focus back onto the fact of rain falling on a farmer’s land. Since Federation, as previously mentioned, rainwater falling on farming properties nourished natural pasture, moisturised the soil allowing for intensive broad acre farming of grain crops and provided water for domestic use by farmer’s as they captured water from roofs of houses and sheds and was considered to be a part of the natural farming cycle of life.

Rainwater was also collected in dams, built by farmers at their own expense and distributed about their properties by pipes and pumps, again provided at their own expense.

In good weather cycles, rainfall was regular and plentiful and in poor weather cycles, and in Australia there are plenty of them, rainfall was sparse and irregular. Continued successful crop production and livestock grazing was dependent upon the water collected

during the good years and used during the poor years.

Cranky Lizard points out that the production of food, which is what farming and grazing is all about, is not a hobby. It is a huge economic enterprise generating vast export income and creating employment for tens of thousands of Australians.

Cranky Lizard can find no evidence of any substantial Government investment, whatever the level, Local, State or Commonwealth, on private farming or grazing land to assist the farmers and graziers with the cost of capturing and distributing water around their properties.

Nada, none, nyet, rien, zip,…………………….. nothing. No evidence. Nothing.

So, where then, does the moral authority come from to charge for rain falling on private land?

There is none.

The motivation, therefore, must be greed. A grasping bureaucratic mind casting about to find ways of increasing Local Government or State Government revenue.

And for what purpose?

Cranky Lizard points out, as did Kerry Packer, that governments do not spend the money they raise in taxes all that well anyway, [ a subject for attention from Cranky Lizard on another day. ] So what the hell are they doing grubbing about in farmers water tanks or dams?

There is no moral justification, By-Laws or regulations enabling revenue collection from rain is flawed simply because the legislation relies upon subjective information – how much rain fell here?

How much rain fell there? What is stored in this dam? What is the volume of water in those pipes?

Sure, rain gauges can be deployed and there are instruments which are triggered by rainfall and can send information regarding the density of the rain and the time it rains – of course, there is. But these instruments are locality specific, and rain falling on one instrument will not indicate accurate rainfall in another part of the farm. Just can’t be done.

How are they going to know? Spend thousands on employing water inspectors to bumble about on farms and grazing land, hiding behind some spurious badge, declaring some authority to judge the rainfall levels.

The whole idea is bordering on Goon Show proportions.

And what of the yabbies that live in the walls of farm dams? Are they the next subject of interest?

A yabbie tax?

Local Council elections are approaching. Cranky Lizard suggests that you may wish to ask candidates some questions about these matters; questions that require answers and questions that are attached to votes.

Meet Chris Thompson candidate for Mayor in the Moreton Bay Region in the upcoming council elections next month.

Roads will be a key priority for Moreton Bay Region mayoral independent candidate Chris Thompson if elected at the Local Government elections on March 28.

Mr Thompson has pledged to work with all levels of government to find solutions to the region’s traffic gridlock.

Another priority will be abolishing the canal levy which Mr Thompson says is simply “unfair”.

“If people want to buy a house on a canal why should they be hit with an additional cost. It does not make sense.”

Mr Thompson is also campaigning to “clean up the council” to ensure a more cohesive and transparent council.

He is referring to findings identified in The Grassroots Connection Report, an internal organisational review that was released in September last year.

The report identified that Moreton Bay Regional was under resourced, contributing to organisational instability. It also identified concerning issues in aspects of working relationships, governance, organisational structures and leadership practices.

Mr Thompson said if elected as mayor a major priority would be to support the new CEO Greg Chemello in instigating organisational change to create stronger leadership, and improved staffing levels and divisional engagement.

“Moreton Bay Region is the largest council administrated region in Australia with 12 divisions. I want to bring the region together,” he said.

“People are saying all they want is for elected representatives to get on with the job of simply listening to them, then working hard to get community outcomes required by the people who elected them.

“Should I be elected, my role as mayor is to ensure improved council accountability and transparency by engaging with the community and attending events to keep the community informed.”

A former electrician, Mr Thompson, went on to university to gain first-class honours in construction, management and economics, an achievement that would ultimately change the course of his life.

“My professional life has been one of growth and transition from project controls engineering, to project manager and project director,” he said.

“I was made redundant 10 years ago and that forced me to re-evaluate my life direction.

“Thankfully I had the resilience to cope.

Since then I have been self-employed.”

Both Mr Thompson and his wife Karin have been active community volunteers since relocating to Warner 27 years ago.

“We have worked for our local state school, raising money for building facilities and for various sporting clubs in Brendale.

“I am ready, willing and able in a proud tradesman like manner to advocate for and lead the energetic, hard working people of the Moreton Bay Region.

“I will work hard for locals and their families wanting to lead healthy, safe lives while striving to prosper in the stunning natural local environment,” Mr Thompson said.

This year's Abbey Medieval Festival (AMF) launch party was all about illumination.

As the major fundraiser for the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology, money raised through AMF has allowed the museum to grow exponentially over the past 30 years, such as the addition of the Medieval Manuscript gallery which opened in 1999.

During her opening speech Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology Director Edith Cuffe said “The medieval manuscripts are some of my most favourite objects in the Museum. Not only because of the exquisite writing

Striking the flint stone against a steel instrument to create fire, Father George lit a candle before proceeding through the crowd to the front of the museum.

When he returned to the presentation space he was followed by Sir Justin who was carrying this year's official festival artwork.

So I bought this very large piece of kangaroo parchment and went home and copied out the entire first chapter of Genesis from the bible in black letter gothic calligraphy and illuminated the whole thing. And I took it back to the calligraphy shop and said ‘Hey, what do you think guys?’ and their jaws just dropped and their like ‘have you ever done this before?’ and I said ‘no this is my first one.’ And their like ‘what?’ So that was my introduction to illuminated manuscripts.” She said in the first video interview.

Illumination is the process of adding gilded details and painted decoration to a manuscript, for the AMF artwork Tania Crossingham not only did the illumination but the calligraphy.

In the lead up to the festival, the AMF Facebook page has been posting interviews with Tania Crossingham who first became inspired to pursue illuminations whilst at art college when she stumbled across a book on illuminated manuscripts in the library.

Tania Crossingham has been a longtime supporter of the Abbey Museum and Festival and said in the interview videos that she was honoured to be asked to create this year’s artwork.

Petra and Hans Krumbholz from Hans Electrical who are sponsors of AMF gallery of photos had been set up with pictures from the last 10 years of AMF. Curated by Neda Lundie the collection featured photos taken by four of the AMF volunteer photographers including herself, Brett Croese, Tracy Dee and David DeGroot. The gallery had a superb range of photos including some glimpses into the after hours reenactor only moments, like the firing of the trebuchet at night.

Neda Lundie expressed that the AMF photography team is massive, so the collection on display is only a small segment but she was unable to gather work from all the other photographers in time for the launch. The gallery worked beautifully to tell a story of the experiences AMF brings attendees.

North Harbour maintains an excellent relationship with the Abbey Museum of Art and Archaeology who are helping them with the North Harbour Heritage Park.

Renee Gusa from Morton Bay Region Industry & Tourism (MBRIT), and local business owners Hans and Petra Krumbholz from Hans Electrical, the official festival electricians, were also in attendance.

Catering for the launch party was award-winning chef Robert Van Buerle, who recently relocated to Bribie Island.

A constant flow of delicious nibbles that included a wide range of tempting morsels circulated throughout the event.

With the launch done, early bird tickets are now on sale for this year’s AMF. This year's tickets also include a limited number of Noble VIP tickets for the Saturday.

Noble VIPs will be taken on a guided tour led by the Lord of Abbeystowe as a photographer captures the moments of their day, and most exciting of all is the opportunity to experience the afterhours magic of AMF; including a medieval tavern meal at the Stag Inn whilst watching the night firing of the trebuchet.

Local Government in Australia was slow to develop, but the large cities in Australia all had local government bodies by the late 1800’s.

Fundamentally, local government bodies in Australia are all creatures of State/Territory legislation. This legislation prescribes the activities which the State/Territory Government requires the local government to perform.

Generally, local governments perform regulatory tasks that would be difficult for State governments to perform because of their localized nature.

These tasks are wide-ranging and relate to building inspection, planning and development approval, dog and cat management, parking, as well as food and health inspection. Local governments assume responsibility for the general health and well being of the local community; this leads them to focus on drainage, immunisation, public toilets, water coolers, waste disposal and cleaning and maintenance of local streets.

Local government will also provide public gardens, parks and sports grounds and in rural regions of Queensland will be responsible for pest management and control, as indeed they do in urban regions as well as, weed control, droving permits, stock control and management.

Local government funding comes from the Federal Government via the various State Governments and also from rates levied on ratepayers, who are the people who own property in the Council administration region.

So, what is all this about?

Well, in Moreton Bay, very shortly Local Government elections will be held. A large number of candidates are making themselves available for election, which is the sign of a healthy democracy.

What is the Role of Local Government in Australia?

they alone can deliver the kind of local government that ratepayers want. We all know that there there are some issues involving the CCC and the previous Moreton Bay Council, but because of the nature of the beast, no comment shall be made in this article.

It is essential that those citizens entitled to vote in Council elections understand who is standing for office, what they propose to do and how they propose to do it.

Candidates are driven by one imperative – to get enough votes to get elected.

Therefore they will cast about looking for pressure points in the community and then promise to fix the problem.

Many of them have no idea what they are really trying to fix, but they say they will fix it because they want your vote.

Now, there is nothing new in this. It has been happening since elections for local office were first conducted in Great Britain and Europe in the 15 th. and 16 th. centuries.

Nor is it illegal for candidates to say these things. But is very important that you, if you are going to vote for them, ask them what they are going to do and how they will do it?

For example, local land management meaning clearing of land, control of weeds and forest floor growth is clearly a matter of priority in this Shire.

The green driven agendas of land management have been exposed as inadequate and dangerous.

How is this newly elected council going to address this problem?

The sheer damage being done to the Bribie Island foreshore by the 4x4 WD

invasion of the ocean coast of Bribie Island is almost incalculable…some serious thinking and regulation need to focus on that issue – and, although it is a State Government matter, loud, constant and sensible political questions raised by Moreton Bay Shire Council will draw attention to what is a major issue.

I ask, where are the green and nature preserving activists who could be drawing attention to baby turtle destruction and foreshore erosion on the Bribie Island ocean coast? Where are they?

Councillors seeking re-election, I am drawing attention to the fact that the days of the long lunches with mates, a few cigars here or there, a few favours here or there, are well and truly OVER! The idea that Local Governments can meddle with the history of European settlement of this country is also a matter of some conjecture. Australia Day is as it is and should remain so. This day should not be subject to political activism regarding the ceremonies of conferring citizenship on people who want to become Australian citizens.

The value to Australian society through our immigration programmes is enormous. The contributions, of immigrants, socially and culturally, to our communities is immeasurable.

An example is the Sikh community’s reaction to the recent bush fire tragedies, members of the Sikh Community gave their time and assets to assist those affected by the fires in practical and sensible ways, delivering food and water over long distances.

It is a fact in a democracy that communities get the governments they deserve. This happens because of apathy in the community towards the responsibility of exercising your right to vote in a responsible fashion.

Thousand of Australians died on foreign soil to secure our freedoms and your right to vote for the men and women who wish to lead our communities.

I urge you all to think carefully about who gets your vote and why they get it!

Bribie Island- is Green and lush again!

Just wonderful to have a few more days of constant rain here on the coast again.

The grass is green and thick everywhere now. It’s hard to believe we were in a drought situation only a few months ago and what was once- a dry and crispy lawn, is now so thick and damp, that cutting it now will test the stamina of the mowing machine and the person pushing it indeed. And, not to mentionhow tiring it is- working in these hot and humid conditions too. So there is lots to catch up on- in the patch and I have noticed lots of pest and weed pressure about the place locally, partly due to all the new succulent flushes of foliage becoming irresistible to hungry insects looking for a safe haven to breed and conquer, which can be a real challenge to treat (as most remedy applications just wash away) especially, when you have been dancing in the garden, between rain squalls- like myself, the last few days trying to catch up on all the necessary maintenance activities.

Pests to look out for- Mealybug infestations on Hibiscus, Cordylines and strappy plants such as Crinum (spider lilies), Agapanthus and most house potted plants. Mealybugs gather en masse and tend to cluster around the growing tips of foliage and flowers where they suck all the sugars from the leaves and stem and by the time when infestations are noticed, the colonies resemble clumps of cotton wool. Usually there are ants running up the stems and leaves, which tend to farm the sugary excretion (called frass), which the ants use to feed their own colonies. The ants work in a symbiotic relationship with most sap sucking pests as they offer protection, in exchange for removal of the sugary excrement. Control: Organic and Cultural. Best to remove the badly infested infestations by pruning away and also using a hose to target a strong stream of water to dislodge your unwanted critters and clear the leaves and flowers and stems as best as you can. When your plants are dry to touch you can apply eco-oil or Neem oil and coat the leaves, flowers and stems thoroughly- to try and discourage the pests and ants. Pyrethrum is particularly good at discouraging ants and can be applied to the soil around your plant also. When plants have been badly attacked and weakened, they will certainly benefit from a fertiliser and a foliar and soil treatment of seaweed to assist in recovery. And now that the soils are damp, the plants will respond well. However there may be other predatory insects feeding on yourtarget pest, such as ladybird beetles and their larvae- for example; the small black ladybird beetle with a brown head- Cryptolaemus montrouzieri, referred to as the- Mealybug destroyer, lays her eggs among the cottony areas of mealybugs and when their larvae emerge, each single larvae can consume up to 250 mealybugs or scale insects, before finally pupating. The problem is that most people do not recognise them and confuse them as mealybugs as they moult and leave threads of cottony

This issue, we have another loyal reader; Rudi Batista, from Sandstone Point, writing in with some questions about problems with their potted citrus trees.

Evolvulus glomeratus Syn. Evolvulus pilosus

Rudi writes: “I live in Sandstone Point with not a lot of garden space I have (2) lemon trees and (1) lime tree- growing in pots, the area they are in, faces the north. The trees look healthy and get a lot of blossoms but as soon as the fruit form they fall to the ground. Could you please advise me what I am doing wrong? I fertilise 3 times a year with citrus fertiliser”.

Common name(s): Blue Daze; Blue Eyes; Blue Sapphire

This dense low growing perennial groundcover is native to Brazil where it grows naturally in dry sand or rocky soil and is an excellent choice for that full sun position around rockeries, hanging baskets and raised garden beds. Evolvulus glomeratus- grows to 30cm high and up to 1 metre wide, and in the warmer months it is covered with blue funnel- shaped flowers which grow to 2.5 cm across, each consisting of 5 blue petals, 5 white stamens and a white throat. The blooms can close up in the late-afternoon and on cloudy days and new ones open in the morning once again. Blue Daze- tolerates dry conditions, but they respond and flower more profusely if given some extra moisture directed at the root zone in the dry spells, but they do not like wet- feet, especially in winter. There are a few new cultivars, one notably called; Evolvulus- ‘Blue my Mind’® Marketed by: Proven Winners ®, and there is also a white flowering variant available.

These are great all-round landscaping plants which also attract the bees and butterflies. larval skin, which is often confused- for the actual mealybug pest presence, and as a result, reach for the pest control option before understanding that its natures biocontrol- masterpiece at work. Now is a great time to replace the lost nutrients that may have been washed out of the topsoil from heavy rainfall lately too. Composted manures such as

cow or chook, are great in small doses, and if crumbled into fines, onto the soil surface- sparingly, or spread onto lawns, will be beneficial to building the organic layer up over-time. Also adding some controlled release, manufactured landscape fertiliser, will be beneficial for most landscape plants but for some Australian native plants from the (Proteaceae family), fertilisers with low phosphorous may be needed, especially- Grevillea’s and Banksia, as these plants have adapted to thrive in poor, phosphorous deficient soils with their specialised proteoid root system, so too much phosphorous or manure based fertilisers may be toxic to their sensitive root systems and cause death to the plant. Thank you, Rudi, for writing in, this seems to be a relatively common problem with most in-ground citrus and also potted specimens like yours.

When citrus bloom they tend to bloom magnificently- all over every branch, but they are sensitive to moisture stress or too much fertiliser. Citrus like full sun and they prefer at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight to produce strong green leaves and abundant flowers.

When citrus trees are in flower and starting fruit formation, they need adequate water to form and develop their fruits, even a healthy tree will naturally drop a lot of their fruits as it puts its energy into distributing the available moisture and nutrients, into the fruits- it can actually handle, in the environmental conditions it faces at the time. Citrus use a tremendous amount of energy when flowering and fruiting and sometimes while growing citrus in pots it can be difficult to keep up their moisture requirements. I have planted out, stressed dwarf-grafted expotted, citrus plants into the garden, in a sunny position and after their roots found the earth for themselves finally, they became more reliable performers.

Sometimes potting mixes can be too dry and coarse, and this will not hold moisture, but if in doubt, you could purchase a simple and cheap moisture probe from the retail garden centre and stick it into your pots to check actually how wet your potting media is. I also found that too much moisture and too much shade will also cause fruit drop as does strong doses of citrus fertiliser.

If you can get the citrus trees moisture requirements just right, I find adding some diluted liquid seaweed every 2 to 3 weeks, will keep the plant cells turgid and stable between watering and fertilising. Caution is needed though, as not to fertilise at flower formation as this can possibly cause fruit drop too.

Soccer team members from Mongochi, a township of Malawi, show off their jerseys Nothing unites a sporting team more than a sense of team pride so when the Bribie Island Baptist Church discovered a soccer team in Malawi, Africa, was the only team not to have jerseys they called on local resources to make it happen.

Mongochi, a township of Malawi, is an outreach mission of the church and Bribie Pastor Ray Airosa approached the Bribie Island Tigers Football Club for assistance and he was only too willing to help out.

The result was inspiring with the club donating 100 jerseys to the team, but just as inspiring was the reaction of the team.

“They were just blown away,” Ps Airosa said. “They were jumping up and down and proudly showing off their new jerseys. They were so surprised.

“For us as a church it is all about making an impact and a difference in people’s lives, whether that be through everyday necessities or donations.”

Bribie Island Tigers Football Club president Jacob Hernandez facilitated the jersey donations, which were last year sponsored by Ray White, and

ensured they reached Mongochi-based missionaries Tim and Mel Downes.

“They were all so excited. The club did not hesitate when the church approached us and I cannot thank last year’s committee enough for signing off on the donation,” Mr Hernandez said.

Members of the Bribie Baptist church make regular trips to Mongochi to support the vital mission work taking place, including literacy and skills training, kindergarten, youth and children’s programs and selfsustainability.

“Church members have provided financial support to Malawi for the past 10 years to ensure it continues to grow and thrive,” Ps Airosa said.

“It’s amazing that a Baptist church in little Bribie Island can make an impact on a little village in Africa,” Ps Airosa said. “This is about supporting our Malawi family.”

Locals and church members have also donated 150 beanies (a big hit with Malawi teenagers!), hygiene packs, clothing and the Aussie quintessential Tim Tams and Vegemite.

There was a promising start to summer fishing, with a big variety of fish, and good numbers, but sadly, it fizzled out a little. Hot weather conditions have hampered the chances of a good haul of fish in the Passage and beyond.

Although rainfall for the month has been pretty average, nothing really fell until the 17th of January. The heavy rain did stir things up a bit, with a lot of fresh coming into the Passage.

In the couple of days after it, Ningi Creek mouth yielded some good bream catches and even legal snapper. Some big bream (one 35cm) were also taken from the Avon wreck at the time. Squid was the most successful bait, as well as soft plastic lures.

At the mouth of Ningi, Daryl landed a lovely 68cm flathead on the 18th, using soft plastics, late in the day.

Here’s a good reason to steer clear of those crab pots.. the island, allows you to follow along the drop-off, which has been holding grassy sweetlip, whiptails and others.

Shelley had to get around to Red Beach before she had any luck – then she was kept busy with “a heap of mackerel”, mainly being busted off, but it was still a

If you happen to catch one, you can’t keep it for food – it “must be disposed of by either burying above the high water mark near the place of capture, or placing in a nearby bin.”

Just as well there are plenty of other fish in the sea….

Daily temps have been around 30+ degrees and nights have not cooled much at all. As a result, water temperatures in the Pumicestone Passage have averaged a whopping 28 degrees – way too hot for fish to be comfortable and active.

Ned’s gutter and Gallagher’s gutter aretwo deeper sections of water, which usually attract fish in warmer weather.

Either of them have been good spots to try over the incoming tide. Any further north than Gallagher’s and the fish are just not very hungry.

Fishing south of the bridge has been an easier way to catch a feed – a drift on the incoming tide, about 100 metres off

Richard says the first cardinal south of the Passage has been the place for mackerel; not all big ones, but lots of them, and there every day.

Further around on Woorim’s surf beach, going north towards the camping area, Geoff said that he and his mates caught loads of grassy sweetlip, whiptails and even coral trout. Live worms, of course, were the bait of choice there.

Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cold water, so this sort of hot summer weather is when fish have a hard time getting enough oxygen. Low oxygen levels can result from other factors, too, such as poor flushing or circulation.

George tells us that, day or night, the fishing at the bridge is going well. It seems stocked full of morwong and grassy sweetlip. Try cast-netting for fresh herring or use cut-baits, like mullet.

Since then, sporadic showers have come through the area, but they didn’t do much to cool things down.

Fish usually compensate for increased water temperature by finding areas that are cooler, allowing their body temperature to cool as a result. In the Passage, that means you need to target the gutters or shady structures, and there have been some good results from that strategy lately.

About the project

Old Toorbul Point Road intersection is currently a give-way controlled T-intersection that facilitates significant traffic volumes to and from Bribie Island Road. In the period between 2007 to 2017, 16 crashes were reported within the project location. By mid 2020, construction will begin and will include:

Traffic signal installation Additional lanes on the Bribie Island Road approaches (two lanes for each intersection approach in addition to left and right turn lanes) A signalised pedestrian crossing from Bribie Island Road On-road cycle lanes Bus stops on both sides of Bribie Island Road

What’s good and what’s not! The Old Toorbul Point Road intersection is, by far, our electorate’s most dangerous intersection. For the past two years I have been

campaigning hard for my community to get the State Government cracking on making this safe. Many others in our community have lobbied hard for years on this also, including the St Michael’s school community and residents and I sincerely thank you all for your voices. Despite our combined best efforts over these years, it has taken until a state election year to finally see some progress (no surprises here!). The good news is construction works will commence by mid 2020. The not so good news is the State Labor Government failed to consult with me on the design elements of the intersection and now they say it’s final. There will be no ‘turn left at any time with care’ onto Bribie Island Road (eastbound). This means that motorists turning left from Old Toorbul Point Road must also stop and wait until they have a green light to merge. Locals have also raised with me the issue of right turn onto McGrath Road (driving eastbound), which also has not been considered in this upgrade. It is disappointing given this is our one chance to get this part of Bribie Island Road right.

WHAT UDDER RUBBISH The State Labor Government has spent last year saying it will support local Queensland owned businesses and Queensland jobs and then goes and gives a milk tender to foreign owned companies!

You may have read in the news recently that Maleny Dairies, a family owned awardwinning milk production company and our neighbours up the hill were overlooked to supply hospitals with the Queensland Government choosing a Chinese and French owned company over our local one.

As if the plight of Queensland dairy farmers isn’t dire enough! As Maleny Diaries put it, “It appears to us from a community perspective that the Minister for Health has focused singularly on his problem of cost blowout and cutting budgets…”

Who’s advising this Minister? How can they get this so wrong? Maleny Dairy employs around 50 locals and purchases milk from 11 local farmers.

NEW BRIBIE BRIDGE Community Reference Committee

Last year I was very pleased to facilitate the coming together of the ‘New Bribie Bridge Community Reference Committee’ (NBBCRC).

This group will provide a forum for discussion, vision planning and feedback encompassing the community’s views and ideas to local representatives of the three levels of Government on matters involving the need for a new Bribie Island Bridge and by when.

The NBBCRC comprises of locals who have a keen interest in the future of our community and particularly our much-needed road infrastructure upgrades. NBBCRC is a non-partisan group acting as reference point for representatives (including potential candidates should they wish to engage with the group).

The group is currently undertaking a review of Bribie Bridge maintenance assessment reports over the past decade and looking at forward planning opportunities.

No doubt you will see the NBBCRC crew out in the community gathering your views on a New Bribie Bridge.
