Hello Readers Happy New Year to all! Wow, haven’t we seen a lot devastation around our country with the fires in NSW & VIC. My heart goes out to everyone and I am sure you will all join me in saying a huge THANK YOU to all our volunteer fire fighters. I feel so helpless, donating money is wonderful, however you need to make sure every cent you donate does go to the victim’s whether it be 2 legged or 4 legged.

Last year was a tough year for our local small businesses and we would like to see this decade 2020 be much more fruitful for our community. I can see we are slowly becoming a holiday destination and our visitors will grow and grow.

This year you will see a council election in March and a state election in October some time. The Local news intends interview each candidate for you the readers and constituents to get to know your candidate.

In this issue we have Cranky Lizard talking about the bush fires, events from MBRIT through out 2020, did you know we had Bribie Island Dolphin Research and much more.

Dear Editor, Having only recently become an Australian, I enjoyed reading Cranky Lizard’s analysis of the population’s concerns.

However, I also noted that he gave the first Australians only 5% of his time.

This may have been because they only comprise 3.4% of our population. Or perhaps it was because he doesn’t know much about what they think.

With the current discussions taking place almost daily about their mistreatment, perhaps he might like to investigate the topic. A good place to start would be by reading Bruce Pascoe’s “Dark Emu” H.Beneke I am very disappointed in the letters complaining about Cranky Lizard.

The difference between C.L and these writers is commonsense.

A transition to renewable energy is going to take many years so if you want your air conditioning, phones etc, etc

you have to be not a one-eyed climate changer.

The mention of ‘environmentalists offering solutions to both energy supply and emissions trajectory’ immediately made me think of Greens.

Yes, their solution is no back burning for years threatening farmers with jail if they dared to get rid of any of any of their fuel load, not keeping up fire trails in National Parks or letting stock graze in them. -not that I have heard anyone say sorry for this, but they have caused these fires through their solutions. As I said C.L is a widely read and intelligent person who has commonsense –a rare commodity these days and I look forward to his writings. There is no way I would put my name to his columns either, there are so many crazies out there that he could be putting himself and his family at risk just because he writes the truth.

With Damian Brown Celebrating Australia CLOSE ENCOUNTERS On Australia Day, 26th January 2020 many of us will take the opportunity to celebrate all the things we love about Australia - our vast land, our beautiful oceans, amazing lifestyle, democracy, our liberty and our people.

The 26th January is an important date in Australia's history which has changed over time starting as a celebration for emancipated convicts and evolving into what is now a celebration of Australia that reflects our nation's diverse people.

As we know, Australia Day marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and the raising of the Flag of Great Britain at Sydney Cove by Governor Arthur Phillip.

In recent times, the 26th January has also created some controversy within our indigenous communities given that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been here for more than 65,000 years and view this day as Invasion or Survival Day. Either way we are a contemporary multi-cultural happy nation that celebrates friendship, community and appreciation for everything human and planet.

At the same time, over 16,000 new Australians will spend this day celebrating their Australian Citizenship at Citizenship Ceremonies across the Country. In separate ceremonies, we also celebrate the achievement and contribution of Australians through various awards on Australia Day. In this edition of Close Encounters, we asked some of our residents to share their Australia Day thoughts.

Interestingly, one of our contributors, Former Mayor of Caboolture from 2000 – 2008, Joy Leishman gave an insight into the experience of Celebrating Australia. Joy said, “As Mayor, I performed Citizenship Ceremonies all year - in fact we were doing them every 3-4 weeks.

What I was never prepared for, and it happened year after year, was the absolute emotion that people bring to that citizenship ceremony. Today when I think about Australia Day, I still have all that good feeling about celebration and fun, but it’s also tempered a bit with those 8 years as Mayor.

Sometimes we would all be in tears of joy – everyone. There is a very solemn component to Australia Day – it’s about being grateful for everything we have in our nation.” I was so thankful to have met Joy and shared these thoughts with Joy – you can still feel and hear the raw emotion that is generated when Joy talks about this life-changing Citizenship experience. Hopefully we have an opportunity to tell Joy’s life story in a future Close Encounter Story.

We hope that you take time to reflect and celebrate our beautiful country on 26th January while remembering those who have lost their lives, homes, businesses, friends, animals and memories in our devastating fires. The statistics on our 2019-20 bushfires are staggering and the response to fundraising and global support is overwhelming. Donations can be made across several agencies.

It is but one day but sometimes we need to stop and share a moment of kindness with another Australian Mate…..Yeh Mate.

What is your favorite Australian Holiday destination?

Wow – we have such a smorgasbord in Australia. I love Tasmania and Broome really impressed me, but we have also taken a trip south with no great plans

Being Australian to me is "Out on the patio we'd sit. And the humidity we'd breath, we’d watch the lightning crack over cane fields, laugh and think, THIS IS AUSTRALIA"

How will you celebrate Australia Day? We will be celebrating with friends and family at our Cafe, with good Aussie tunes and some King Prawns on the BBQ. I dare say a few XXXX Golds (Milton Mangoes) may be had throughout the day by all involved.

What is your all-time favorite Australian Movie/Book?

What does ‘being an Australian’ mean to you?

Today when I think about Australia Day, I still have all that good feeling about celebration and fun – it’s also tempered a bit with those 8 years as Mayor. It’s about being grateful about everything we have in our nation. I think it also depends on your age and where you live. When we were much younger, we may head to a reef or different activity.

That’s that great thing about being an Australian in a Multicultural Society – we choose to celebrate in many different fun ways.

How will you celebrate Australia Day? I think that the beautiful part of our new contemporary society is that we can celebrate and express ourselves in so many different ways – even our food have evolved and become exciting and diverse.

We love to hang out with friends on Australia Day, however if the weather is good, we will head out on 38-foot Mustang boat – we just love the water, our boat and time together.

What is your all-time favorite Australian Movie/Book?

I really appreciate the book entitled, Green Mountains / Cullenbenbong by Bernard O'Reilly. The way Bernard writes about the trees, animals and birds is so distinctly Australian. When we downsized our libraries from our home to our apartment, this was one of the most important books that I kept.

What is your favorite Australia band or music?

I enjoy all sorts of music and we have certainly viewed some amazing performers over the years. For some reason, Daryl Braithwaite (Horses) always springs to mind.

What are your favorite Australian Foods?

Like so many Australians, we grew up on Three Vegetable and not much meat.

These days if I would love to sit down and consume Fresh Sand Crab with Pepper – nothing else

My All- time favorite Australia movie would have to be Gettin' Square. just to explore and support small towns.

To me Being Australian means being generous in spirit and time, rallying together to support those in need, and being able to enjoy all the freedom that Australia offers. It’s about having the right to vote and the chance to make a difference... no matter big or small it all counts… even if you can reach and help change the life of just one person ... when it comes to being Australian it’s not about money ... it's about being there and standing by your mates through good times and bad ..... just saying to someone " you’re not on your own - we are here for you.” That’s the Australian spirit. Bribie Islanders in particular live and breathe this amazing spirit every single day and that is why being a part of the wonderful Bribie Island community on Australia day is special.

How will you celebrate Australia Day?

Aussie crims robbing Australia Fair Shopping Centre to get their last lot of money they can before "Getting Square" with the law. Its filled with Classic Aussie Humor without even meaning to be. Do yourself a favor What is your favorite Australia band or music?

Picking a favorite Australian Band is a hard one. But the two bands I had to listen to growing up (like it or not) whether in the car or on the boat with the old man was Australian Crawl and Midnight Oil. Aussie Crawl was the Sirocco Album or The Oils 10 - 1 Album.

What are your favorite Australian Foods?

Australian Foods are always a difficult choice. But not if you have had Vegemite and Cheese on toast. Its and easy choice ha-ha.

What is your favorite Australian Holiday destination?

An Australian Holiday destination that I’ve been needing to get back to for some time is Broome, Western Australia. The contrast of the Outback dirt meeting the White sand beaches and clear blue water makes it hard to beat for me. Everyone deserves to drive along Cable Beach at least once.

I will be spending Australia day with my Amazing husband Aaron and my children Willow and Oscar and with our friends on the beautiful Bribie island passage at Bongaree. We will join in all the fun that our councilor Brooke Savage is putting on for us all at Brennan Park ... it is always a fantastic evening.

Vacancies at U3A classes Barry Clark- U3A Public Relations

Limited vacancies exist in more than 90 of the courses being offered for term 1 of 2020. A complete daily course timetable and brief course outlines are available on the website or pick up a copy at the Bribie Library, Information and Neighbourhood Centres.

For those with a love of poetry there is the Poetry Appreciation course which meets monthly to explore and discuss poems around a theme and the Poets’ Corner full year course which offers an in- depth investigation and celebration of poetry culminating in the production of an anthology of poems written by the members. Shakespeare Plays –Top Hits, Classic Novels and the monthly Book Discussion group offer more opportunities for those with a love of literature Seeing Life Differently provides the opportunity to examine strategies to help manage the challenges of life while the various yoga courses, as well as the Tai-Chi Chaun and Tai-Chi Beginners courses, provide a calming environment to benefit both the body and mind.

There is always a demand for art courses. Offering the opportunity to learn basic drawing skills and apply this to working in ink and ink washes is the 2 term Pen Plus Beginners course, while there are also minimal vacancies in at least 8 other art courses using a variety of mediums The Trading Academy course provides

an introduction to share trading and the best methods to produce profitable results, while the weekly Trivia Quiz provides a challenge and the opportunity to display your general knowledge and socialise with others.

The challenge of learning a second language continues to attract new members. Whether it is Chinese Mandarin , French for Travellers, German, Spanish, Indonesian or Italian there are limited vacancies in some for beginners. Opportunities exist for those with some previous experience through to courses catering for those with more advanced conversational skills.

Science based courses include Astronomy for Beginners, the 1 term course How Life Works and Exploring DNA and DNA Testing , a 6 week course, combining science and Genealogy. The lovers of history are catered for with Development of the Modern World, Inventions and Discoveries in History and ÄustraliaHistory and an Introduction to Bribie Island History.

Dance courses in Greek dancing, Jazz, Ballroom , Salsa, Rock and Roll and Line Dancing all provide a great way to exercise, meet new people and have fun .

Lawn Bowls, Boules, Croquet and Pickleball provide opportunities to interact in outdoor sports, while, for those who prefer indoor table games, there are vacancies in Cards 500, Canasta, Mah Jong, Scrabble and Bridge for Beginners.

ENROLEMENT U3A is on holiday until Term 1 commences on Tuesday 28th January.

Term 1 will run for 10 weeks until Friday 3rd April Enrolment for available Term 1 classes will take place at the U3A Centre, Recreation Hall, First Avenue on Saturday 18th January from 9am till noon, and on Wednesday 22 January

between 9am and 11am.

STUDENT ART SHOW The annual “Masters & Apprentices” art exhibition by many U3A Art Classes goes on show at the Community Arts Centre for two weeks in late January.

This wide range of Art Works were developed over many months, and include multiple styles of creative art, including Watercolour, Acrylic, Pencil, Pen and Mixed Media, Silk Painting and Print. This exhibition will open your eyes to a range of works done at U3A by beginners and experienced Masters.

Beachmere Australia Day Picnic in the Park, all proceeds to go 2 ad 4 legged victims of the bushfires!

As the fires raced across southern states in early January, people across Australian and the world donated to online campaigns, sewed flannelette pouches for animals or dropped water and supplies into collection points across Australia.

Beachmere comes together as a community on Australia Day when they gather for the Picnic in the Park on Sunday, 26 January.

Beachmere Area Network Group organised the Picnic when locals kept asking “what can we do” and “where can we donate”.

The event will raise funds for both two legged and four legged victims of the fires with all proceeds from the day being donated. There will also be a collection point for anyone wishing to donate goods with the Beachmere Wildlife Shop organising distribution to wildlife carers.

Master Artist –Ross Elliot The exhibition can be viewed between January 21 and February 2nd at the Community Arts Centre on Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach, which is open every day except Monday from 10 am till 4pm , Come along to enjoy and support this wonderful display of local talent with your friends and family, and stay for drink and snack at the Gallery Café.

The day starts around 11am and will have some fun Australiana events and activities including thong throwing and biscuit nibbling competitions and the race for the longest Mintie wrapper.

Backyard cricket and the great Aussie Quiz will entertain the crowds, along with local Bribie band, Boom Baby.

The event has seen several Beachmere businesses offer their support and the BANG committee have guaranteed that ALL proceeds from the Picnic will be donated to the charities nominated.

The Australia Day Picnic in the Park is on Sunday, 26 January from 11am till 3pm in Clayton Park, Beachmere.

All About Dolphins

Citizen Science is alive and well here on Bribie Island, especially for Dolphin research.

What Dolphin is that?

Bribie Island Dolphin Sightings is a local group founded by Pete Garbett, a member of Dolphin Research Australia (DRA), to help generate interest and build a database for dolphin sightings in and around Bribie Island.

Growing up on the Gold Coast, living on the beach front and watching dolphins in the surf, Mr Garbett truly has been involved with dolphins his whole life.

“My folks knew a gentleman who owned an aquarium on the Gold Coast that had dolphins, the aquarium’s no longer there, it’s been gone for decades but when I left school I actually went and worked for him and another aquarium in New South Wales. When I left that industry I became involved with research on dolphins and whales.” Mr Garbett said.

The group encourages locals interested in Dolphin research to contribute their photos and encounters with the local dolphin population, and provides educational posts to help identify which species of dolphin you may have sighted.

Coastal dolphins are counted amongst some of the most vulnerable marine species across the world, as they and their environment are under threat from a number of human sources. So DRA was established in 2012 to not only research and understand dolphins and whales but to provide a voice for the protection of them.

With help from a number of dedicated locals the group recorded a total of 387 sightings in 2019. In December alone there were 31 sightings; 21 of bottlenose dolphins, 11 of humpback dolphins and 2 were the group was unable to confirm the species.

Over two years ago Mr Garbett formed Bribie Island Dolphin Sightings to work alongside DRA by encouraging citizen science and getting locals involved and noting sightings for the two species of dolphins that call Bribie Island home.

The two main species of Dolphin found around Bribie Island are the Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and Humpback Dolphin (Sousa sahulensis) species.

Mr Garbett said “I’ve been involved with dolphins all my life, and a few years ago I decided to come down to Bribie two or three times a week and found that there were good numbers of sightings.”

This year the group is planning to have Dr Elizabeth Hawkins from DRA provide a presentation open to the public on the bottlenose and humpback dolphins.

Don’t get caught out with refunds and exchanges this season

Regret grabbing that item in this year’s Boxing Day sales, or thinking of exchanging an unwanted present you received from a distant relative?

Then the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) wants to remind you about your consumer rights.

Acting Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Dr Anthony Lynham said under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) people have rights when it comes to faulty products or services, but not for a change of mind. “Under the ACL you are automatically covered by a number of consumer guarantees,� Dr Lynham said. “These include acceptable quality, acceptable appearance and finish, no defects, and the product must be safe and durable, as well as fit for purpose.

“If a product or service you buy in Australia fails one of these consumer guarantees, you may be entitled to some kind of remedy. “They must also match the description, sample or demonstration model and comply with any extra promises the seller makes, such as what you can use the goods for.�

Dr Lynham said many stores offer refunds and exchanges for changes of mind for a certain time period as a gesture of goodwill.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has the following tips for shoppers: • Remember retailers aren’t legally obliged to exchange or refund items if you change your mind and different retailers may have different policies around exchanges.

• Keep your receipts as this helps streamline the process if you do need to seek a refund or exchange. • If a product is faulty, damaged or dangerous you may be entitled to a remedy such as a refund, replacement or repair. • If you’re claiming a refund or replacement because the product was faulty, you don’t need the original packaging.

• “No refunds on sale itemsâ€? signs are illegal – consumers still have rights whether an item is on sale or not.

If you believe you are entitled to a refund or remedy, consumers are advised to approach the business in the first instance and try to resolve the issue.

Request to access food sources for wildlife carers From BEIPA.

Dear Reader As you are no doubt aware the Wildlife Carers in the Moreton Bay Region are being overwhelmed with the impacts of Climate Change, drought, extreme summer temperatures and devastating fires, not to mention the toll exacted on our highways, byways and urban areas.

Our Region’s Wildlife Carers are being stressed to their limits, physically and financially, as they endeavour to care for and rehabilitate the increased numbers of injured and ailing adult and baby birds, flying foxes, koalas, wallabies, echidnas, possums, reptiles, etc that are being brought into their homes for attention.

Our wildlife carers are volunteers who depend on donations and the good will of the public to continue their work.

BIEPA has just received a request from one of the Wildlife Rescue Queensland carers asking ……

“Do you know anyone who has a Moreton Bay Fig tree that I can harvest the figs to cryovac & freeze for birds??

Thank you in advance - N.” BIEPA will be sending this request out to the BIEPA membership as well.

However, there are many Moreton Bay Fig trees on public lands and parks in the Region, so we are asking if wildlife

We would appreciate your prompt attention and advice regarding this request, because there is a dire need for food caused by the prevailing adverse conditions in our fragile natural environment.

BIEPA has been advised that many drought stressed native trees did not blossom during the normal winter/ spring season and those that did, did not produce pollen.

This has left flying foxes, birds, bees and insects without their normal sources of food supply.

Our Region’s bat carers are reporting that under the extreme temperatures, starving, heat stressed flying fox mothers are prematurely aborting their babies. The “bat carers” are out each morning checking the “maternity camps” saving as many of the surviving aborted babies that have fallen to the ground.

The following is an excerpt from a koala carer responding to a newspaper article: “I have worked with and for koalas since 1993 right up to the present moment.

To add to that level of expertise, I am also an Environmental Scientist whose major focus has been and continues to be native wildlife and its ability to survive within a human environment.

Koalas actually prefer mature eucalypts because they offer a range of food choices from the tender, fresh tip at the tops of the trees, to the mature leaf often chosen to assist the digestive processes to old leaf favoured by koalas with kidney related health issues. Young eucalypts contain high quantities of phenols and toxins that discourage predation by a range of insects and arboreal animals. Young eucalypts want to grow into big trees so by loading their leaves with less palatable chemicals they won’t get eaten and therefore retain high photosynthetic opportunities encouraging growth.

In many areas habitat loss and fragmentation has forced koalas to eat younger trees because they were left being considered less dangerous from a falling limb perspective. The fact is that koalas are also suffering from ongoing droughts, heat waves and bush fires which has reduced and/or destroyed their crucial food source.

Koalas are searching to find suitable shelter in the heat and these days they

are often found cooling off in camphor laurels and other non-natives because they are large enough to provide shade.

To make the challenges of survival even greater, eucalypts are shedding excess leaves in their attempts to reduce water loss which results in higher toxicity of the leaves koalas and other arboreal animals need to survive which may affect their health in the long term.

Right now, koalas are being admitted into wildlife medical facilities suffering from dehydration, malnutrition and diseases some of which are brought about by a compromised immune system. Instead of arguing about how this climate catastrophe came about everyone should be looking at solutions and finding the means to ameliorating what are now facts.”

As you can see, there is an urgent need for the Moreton Bay Regional Council to address the loss of habitat and food sources for native wildlife.

It is extremely distressing for caring environmentalists to be constantly reminded of these facts and needs and we hope that the Moreton Bay Regional Council can be of some help to assist the wildlife carers who are working so hard to ensure the Region’s iconic and fragile native fauna and flora survive into the future and are not consigned to extinction because of our lack of action.

Helping the Bribie community to live independent, healthier and happier lives

Bribie Respite and Support Services offers a weekly program of aged care day respite at our centre which focuses on caring for people living with dementia.

We provide the highest quality of care and assistance for older members of our community to enjoy a day away from home.

Above all, we want to improve the quality of life of the people who come to us as well as providing ongoing practical and emotional support to their long-term carers and families.

Over the last 30 years, we have developed a range of therapeutic activities for older people; activities that extend them socially as well as support them emotionally.

Research shows that socialising and recreational activities slows the progression of ageing and dementia.

These activities are also proven to contribute significantly to personal wellness and satisfaction.

Our aged care program of activities is developed by qualified care staff, with lots of input from our clients. Clients choose which activities they want to do each week from a range that includes Wii golf, bowls, dance, physiotherapistled activity, craft, and conversation and much more.

Our daily aged care program consists of:

10.00am Morning Tea Our day begins with Morning Tea at the Centre or on location at one of our destinations. Morning Tea is a time for social chat and the development of friendship.

10.30-12.00 Diversional TherapyBased Activities We then break up into group or individual activities designed to facilitate physical and cognitive engagement in a social atmosphere. All the activities are chosen by our clients.

12.00-1.00pm Lunch A leisurely lunch is enjoyed between 12pm and 1pm. Lunch choices consist of home cooked meals, freshly made sandwiches and desserts, all prepared on site.

1.00-2.30pm Diversional TherapyBased Activities After lunch everyone enjoys a selection of activities from the program.

2:30pm Afternoon Tea Activities stop and afternoon tea is enjoyed.

3.00pm Boarding the Bus for Home Everyone boards the buses from 3 pm to be returned home by 4 pm.

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Ernie-James continued his education in prosthetic dentistry and completed a Master of Dental Prosthetics in 2013, where he was awarded, The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Clinical Award. This includes, supervising postgraduate students during their clinical sessions, supervising both dental technology and dental science undergraduates during their technical laboratory sessions, lecturing clinical prosthetic theory, and exam moderation.

Currently, Ernie-James is completing a professional doctorate in Psychology.

As a practicing dental prosthetist, Ernie-James is a member of the Australian Dental Prosthetist Association (ADPA) Clinically, his primary focus is on patient care, understanding and education, delivering a detailed research and evidence based approach towards treatment planning and prosthetic dental care.

Yay! If you are reading this then you survived the Christmas food fights. Not only in the war zones of the supermarket aisles where reaching for a mango could lead to limbs being lost, but also in the kitchens, BBQ’s and eateries around the Island.

to gorge to the point where your body has to shut down and sleep just to stop you eating anymore and hopefully give your overloaded body time to process the approximately 16,000 calories that are now wrapped around your vital organs.

After endless food inhaling some of you would have spent time snoozing through food comas vowing never to eat that much ever again, or at least not until Easter (Yes, I know, hot cross buns are in the supermarkets!) or the next family gathering.

But enough already! Christmas and New Year are over and I really do hope it was as fun and fabulous as you wanted it to be and that you drowned in the spirit of family and love and not so much in the spirit from the local liquor store.

Us? Well we had a very quiet Christmas day only venturing out for a coffee. Yes we did indulge in some Christmassy goodies but not the coma inducing amounts that some people manage to force down just “because it’s there and it’s Christmas”. I’ve got to say that it is beyond me as to why people feel the need

So here we are off on another new adventure fuelled year, actually, as I keep saying... New Decade! Right now your dreams and resolutions are still new, shiny, sparkly and shimmery.

Awwwww that’s so exciting! This time of year really is filled with hope, happiness, plans and goals.

Senior Gentle Chair Cardio Exercises Before You Start

You Should Be Exercising At A Level Where You Can Say Five Words Before Needed To Take A Breath. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are gentle cardio exercises which we do in Heartbeats classes.

You Should Be Exercising At A Level Where You Can Say Five Words Before Needed To Take A Breath. Take each exercise slowly and carefully. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Chair Cycling Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Hold out your “handlebars” and keep them still while cycling Sit up straight and hold your tummy muscles tight Lift both feet off the floor and “cycle” for the count of 20 each foot, or as many as you comfortably can. If you find having both feet up uncomfortable then march instead of cycling. Rest and then perform one of the rowing or paddling exercises.

Chair Rowing Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle out in front with your arms almost completely straight Bring the noodle back in and tuck under your chin “Row” in and our 20 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then go back and repeat the cycling exercise.

Chair Kayaking

Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle like a kayak paddle with both hands in the centre “Paddle” on each side 15 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then repeat the cycling exercise.

Chair Left or Right Canoeing

Holding a cut piece of pool noodle or light short broom handle or piece of bamboo Sit in a stable chair with back support. Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Hold the noodle on one side like a canoe paddle with one hand in the middle and one on top “Paddle” on one side 20 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing. Rest then repeat the cycling exercise. Come back and “Canoe” on the other side after you finish cycling.

It doesn’t matter what your plans are, they don’t have to be fitness related. They could be about travelling or studying.

Maybe both! You might be planning on learning to speak Outer Mongolian so you can travel to Outer Mongolia and be able to order a Yaks milk latte and not mistakenly order a huge plate of Stujin, which for those who can’t speak Mongolian, is boiled and jellied sheep's head with “other” things (OMG what other things?!) thrown in for good measure. Ummm, yummy??

But you know, deep down, in that place where you just know you know, that no matter what your plans for this coming year or decade are, you know, yes you do, that to achieve your plans you need a healthy body and mind to carry you through, and to get that you need to eat the right food (which luckily is not a jellied sheep head) and to exercise. Yes, E.X.E.R.C.I.S.E. Don’t you just hate that I do that, turn dreams of sitting in a yurt, watching the sunset across the steppes of Outer Mongolia, drinking an Outer Mongolian Yaks latte, into an exercise thing. Well it’s what I do bestest and it’s the truth.

Looking after your body and mind does involve exercise. Whether it’s because you want to be able to trek steppes or fly to Vegas you will need to be active and able enough to walk huge airports, get in and out of buses and planes, remember your flight number and the name of your hotel.

So get organised and make a difference to your next decade, whether it’s your 2nd or your 9th you should be fit enough to do what you want as often as you can. Throughout the year I ramble on about not needing a new year or even a Monday to start changing your life, you CAN do it any time of the week, any time of the day. Just because you have sat

For instance, starting on Wednesday the 22nd of January my Heartbeats classes are once again part of the Moreton Bay Regional Council Healthy & Active program which means that right through until June 3rd 2020 the Wednesday classes will be Free. These classes are a great class for those who want to add some gentle exercise into their week (there are Monday and Friday classes for $5 a class as well).

The classes are designed for anyone with a chronic illness such as Heart Disease, Diabetes, Arthritis, Cancer , etc.

Everyone has a chair so you can sit and rest whenever you want, and we do some of the exercises seated but not all of them. Balance, Co-ordination, strength and cardio are all included in the class which lasts an hour but has lots of little rests throughout.

Six days a week Andrew conducts our circuit classes which are great for fat burning and cardio increasing. They are always fun and filled with laughter. You can try one of those for FREE and if you would like to do that give Andrew a call to book in. The classes are held Monday to Friday at 9am, Saturday at 7am and Monday to Thursday night at 5.15pm.

Tips for selling unique property As anybody in real estate will tell you, every property is different, but some are perhaps a little more different.

The further from the norm a property is, the more difficult it tends to be to locate a buyer, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t lean into what makes the property unusual.

Trying to hide a property’s quirks or pass them off as normal is almost guaranteed to fail, and when it does, buyers will see your sales tactic as disingenuous.

Tracey Caruana, Principal of McGrath Estate Agents Springfield, prefers to advertise the property’s uniqueness.

“Often the media loves to tell the story of the home – why it was built, what the inspiration was, etc., so it’s always a great idea to get them involved to write a story and get extra exposure,” she says.

“And create a really unique video about the home as it’s always entertaining for not just the general market, but others too, and it will get the home lots of exposure.”

Understandably, the features that make the home particularly unusual aren’t going to appeal to every buyer, but in an effort to keep her target audience as large as possible, Caruana prepares for the possibility of buyers wanting to make changes.

“With unique homes can come issues of functionality, so I always like to be very prepared with quotes to change, fix, or modify anything that I think other people may not like,” she says.

“It’s also important to be very organised by having completed a building inspection first, and sometimes a valuation as well.

“This way people are more confident in their buying decisions.”

Sales Manager at Bees Nees City Realty Rebecca Herbst says the best way to market a unique property is to tell its story.

“Is there background about the unique feature, and what was it done that way, or who designed it, and what are the benefits to it, as well as the aesthetics?” she says.

Herbst also says that an unusual property calls for some unusual photography.

“Make sure the imagery is top class, and from standard angles but also arty angles,”

she says.

“If the uniqueness is the location, drone photography and a drone fly-through video is a must.”

When valuing a property, common practice is to compare to nearby and similar properties – a process called a comparative market analysis. With an unusual home, finding similar properties may be difficult – or even impossible.

The value of the property then will depend heavily on what makes it so unique. For example, a home that is unusual because it is on a huge lot in a very central area is going to be worth a lot more for that feature.

Meanwhile, a home with seven bedrooms may not be worth much – if any – more than a four or five bedroom home, because so many bedrooms are rarely sought after.

Whether it’s unusual features or outlandish architecture that makes the property unique, special consideration will need to be taken when valuing the property, and if a home is truly bizarre it may not be worth nearly as much as its loving owner believes.

An atypical property is likely to have a more specific buyer, so before any marketing takes place it’s important to understand who the potential buyers are, and how to market to them.

For example, a bespoke beach house is going to be highly appealing to somebody who’s accustomed to coastal living, and probably enjoys swimming, surfing, fishing, boating, or all of the above.

The more unusual a property is, the harder it may be to identify the target market, but as long as someone once had the desire to build it, you can all but guarantee someone else will have the desire to buy it – it’s simply a matter of finding them,

The Serenity Exposed

Serenity hosted quite a few events leading up to the new year and then in early January we hosted Daryl’s 70th birthday party which he shared with family and friends. Daryl helped Frank Marshal with a few of his songs and a great time was had by all. Coming up we are hosting a 13th birthday and we are looking forward to that. There’s a gardening club luncheon and a raft of other events. If you have a special function coming up, give us a call to see if we can help.

Music this month features the Celtic Minstrels on Friday 17th January. This event is already fully booked.

Friday 24 January we see the return of JD and Co, a duo that know how to have fun and will rock your socks off.

JD & Co is Bribie’s newest and maybe the best blues and rock and roll duo the island has ever had. JD Wynn has teamed up with Graeme (Styx) Gutteridge and together they have forged a unique sound. Come join us for a dance and a great night’s entertainment Friday 31 January we going to try something different. Serenity at the Waterways is hosting a family fun night just before school goes back.

Across the world Australians are known under many stereotypes: loud, adventurous and friendly, but perhaps the best quality that we possess is that of community and mateship. The Australian spirit was first shown to the world during World War One, but in more recent times has been highlighted as our country continues to suffer from the ongoing bushfires wreaking havoc across our now scorched land.

From such heartbreaking devastation we have seen the rise of heroes, the firefighters who have given their lives to defend communities and family homes. Alongside these brave men and women, we have seen the generosity of Australians, who have given their time, money and donations to those who have been impacted by this disaster.

Strangers from across the country have given their support to others, offering their homes and love during this period of destruction. Such acts of kindness and selflessness are the actions that must be honoured and remembered this Australia Day. In the past, the 26th of January has been a day of parties and barbecues, and whilst these Aussie traditions remain important, this year our celebrations should be geared towards recognising the Australian heroes, big or small, who have given their best efforts to defend countless homes and towns across our country.

Whether or not the fires have personally impacted you or your family, the effects of these fires will be seen for years to come. Australia Day is viewed by many as a day to recognise the beauty of the land we live in, and recognise the success that we have had throughout the past year. While our beaches and sporting success are a large part of the Australian culture, an even larger part are the people. People like you and Iwho may be avid cricket fans or love a sausage in bread- people who this year will not spend Australia Day in their own homes. Australia Day 2020 is the year we must recognise each person, those who make up our wonderful country, the year we recognise the spirt, tenacity and bravery of so many Australians. In times such as these it is more important than ever to band together in solidarity. If you are able to, pick a charity that resonates with you, whether that be supporting wildlife shelters or the red cross, and donate to those who need your support. As we enter a new decade, it becomes\ evident that for Australia to remain the beautiful country that it is we must recognise and support our community spirt, our vast and wonderful environment and national animals. To those who are continuing to work and protect on the 26th of January, I say thank you for your ongoing efforts and dedication to the citizens of this country.

Bush Fires – What a bloody Shame?

It is with deep respect and sadness that Cranky Lizard dedicates this article to three firefighters who died while fighting fires in New South Wales: Samuel McPaul from Holbrook region: Geoffrey Keaton from Buxton region: and Andrew O’Dwyer from Buxton region. They were young Australian men who gave their lives protecting their communities. They represent the very best that we have as a nation.

We also know, from Police sources that nearly 60 people have been arrested on charges of arson, relating to bushfires.

That number of people willing to light up the bush causes Cranky Lizard to question the links these people might have to political and activist pressure groups! Maybe they wish to emphasise their cause by creating the fires they claim to be the result of climate change?

The whole land management circus is multi-level government spread across several government departments; there is compelling evidence that much confusion reigns. We know, from Court Reports, that hefty fines have been imposed upon individuals for clearing firebreaks despite advice from various government departments that is was legal to do so…..within certain parameters.

Ave Atque Vale.

Lives lost. Thousands of buildings destroyed. Homes with people’s irreplaceable memories contained therein burnt to cinders. An incomprehensible number of animals, birds and reptiles lost. Millions of dollars of infrastructure wrecked and tens of thousands, yes, tens of thousands of fire fighting volunteers reduced to a state of utter exhaustion and despair.

And for what?

Well, the stark truth of this is that complacent, self-indulgent Governments at all levels in Australia; Local, State and Federal; have, over the past 10 – 15 years allowed ‘ green ‘ land management practices to convert our native forests, our parks and general countryside into an explosive tinder box.

Why did they let this happen?

Cranky Lizard reckons it was easier to just go along with it all rather than confront the noisy, media supported, well-organized and well funded green lobby at all levels. Green votes, innercity votes, wealthy professional votes and a general ‘ laissez-faire ‘ attitude to the whole thing created the opportunity for a fatally beautiful siren song to float through the halls of our Government structures – dulling the intellects, assuaging the need to question what we were doing and gently shepherding us all into a place where complacency, with its deadly knock-on effects, sucked us into its comforting mental swamp.

And there we settled – like a mastodon trapped in a lake of tar. A bit uneasy, some small burrs under the saddle pricked here and there, but it was all too hard, and it all looked alright.

So there we were, fat, dumb and happy, surrounded by tonnes of forest fuel which breathed out an explosive mix of eucalyptus vapour; not seeing the hammer, waiting to fall.

And the hammer fell in December 2019.

Cranky Lizard does not intend to

document the horror, the ferocity, the sheer terror of what happened to us – we have all seen the images. We have all seen the little media people in their fire fighting suits with “ media “ on their sleeves and their fire helmets held up by their ears as they pranced about on a flickering blue and red stage trying to tell us what we already knew.

And many Australians did know. A fair percentage of us have lived through the 1970s, the 1980s and into the 2000s.

We have extensive corporate knowledge of bush fires and what they can do when the dragon roars out from its cave.

Australian aboriginal people knew what was happening. They know how to manage the land and how to reduce fuel levels; they have been doing it for thousands of years. They spoke out in various forums; did we listen? No.

You can ask yourselves, why did we not listen? Well, once again, Cranky Lizard reckons it was merely a matter of votes… stay in government, don’t rock boats, it will all be alright. Local Governments locked up reserves, State Governments locked up Parks and Forests throughout the various States, made land clearing and tree management almost criminal offences, declaring fire break construction a form of madness and Federal Governments found it easier to leave National Parks undisturbed thus encouraging stupendous fuel loads to generate.

If there was ever an example of bad things happening because good people stayed silent…this is it !!

Think about this for a moment, if you will?

Thousands of Australians build their homes in eucalyptus forests, with tall, mature gum trees within touching distance of their houses. “ A home amongst the gum trees. “ Various local government regulations prevent them from removing the tree if they wanted to – but, town planning approval was happily given to build homes in these places. They even built wooden houses!

We are building wooden houses amongst gum trees and encouraging stupendous fuel loads of forest material to accumulate – what sane person would do that?

More to the point, what irresponsible government allows them to do that?

The answer to that is clear for all to see.

Cranky Lizard insists that Governments are not amorphous units operating independently; Oh No!

Governments, at all levels, are put there by us !! They comprise elected representatives, chosen by us to do a job of work. They are responsible to us at the ballot box and it is us that should tell them what to do and what we want.

Cranky Lizard has banged on about this before, but it will not go away folks, it just will not go away. We complain about our politicians, all the time, I know that, and you know that. But if we don’t hold them to account, if we don’t give them feedback regularly, it is difficult for the complaints to be credible.

And these parameters were entirely confused: which left legal doubt as the only certainty.

Cranky Lizard reckons that we are better than this, or at least we bloody should be – because we have been living in a fool’s paradise.

What to do?

Cranky Lizard believes that stating the obvious and making critical comment is one thing; there are, however, some suggestions that Cranky Lizard offers:-

1. Central management and control have failed. Therefore it is time to return control to landowners, homeowners, foresters and local fire authorities. Cranky Lizard knows that this suggestion will be viewed as hysterical heresy, particularly by socialist labour governments at State level, but as bush fires rage and thunder across our land, anyone can see that their green land management policies are dangerous rubbish.

2. Remove and reduce fuel loads by controlled cool burning in winter months.

The year 2020 in Queensland brings a State election and a Moreton Bay Shire Council election. You all have an opportunity to make your thoughts known to those seeking election at both levels.

Having spent a great deal of my younger life in the bush surrounded by pastoral operations, growing beef cattle for protein for humans, I became quite intrigued the other day, while wandering through a major supermarket, to find a display of products that were not meat but were presented as a meat substitute.

This food was mainly hamburger patties, packaged and presented as “ just like real meat “….Huh? I then checked a few sources I knew, including the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation, to clarify what market forces were at work here and, what, if any, customer demand existed.

The story goes back some time, into Europe and the USA, in the early 2000s.

False meat or fake meat had its genesis in the climate alarmist stable; where it was decided, who knows by whom, that methane ejected by animals was a threat to the global atmosphere and therefore the elimination of the industry of producing beef protein for human consumption was necessary to save the Earth.

I thought about this for a while and decided that enough words had been produced, by all stakeholders, to equal the efflux of animal methane into the atmosphere and that anything that I said in the context of the climate alarmist shouting match would simply be irrelevant.

But, being a country boy at heart, I decided to find out a bit about this fake meat, so I purchased some from a major supermarket.

The product was presented as a beetroot burger -which was OK. No attempt to hide its origin or its purpose; it was fake meat.

When is meat not meat – an Anomalous Meat Pie. It contained large amounts of highly processed food matter. About 18 ingredients in all – including pea protein, soy protein, coconut and canola oils, rice protein, potato starch and beetroot juice extract for colouring. Other fake meats use an iron-containing compound from soy called heme, which is used to enhance the meaty flavour.

A plant derivative called methylcellulose is also widely used in fake meat products to bind the material together when it is cooking; otherwise it may well fall apart.

So, what have we got so far?

Well, compared to a real beef hamburger patty the fake meat has similar amounts of protein and calories, with a lot less saturated fat and virtually no cholesterol.

Which is good.

But. When compared to real meat the sodium content of the fake meat is much higher.

An uncooked real meat hamburger patty has about 75 milligrams of sodium compared the fake meat hamburger patty of similar size which has an average of 380 milligrams.

That is a huge difference – probably to enhance flavour.

I have eaten both on the same day – and trying very, very hard not to let any bias cloud my judgement, I concluded that real meat was juicier, tastier and more satisfying to eat – although it was a close run thing!

I wonder if you can all see the anomaly here.

The sole purpose of creating fake meat is to destroy the real meat industry because the methane produced by cattle

is destroying the world. So, the logical extension to that is eating fake meat is better for humans in a general sense but there is the added bonus of the noisy, rattling vegan carriages being clamped onto this weird train thus providing another marketing option.

Vegans and climate alarmists are pretty consistent in their message about natural processes and healthy food being part of the solution to saving the world.

This fake meat, however, is some of the most highly processed food ever consumed by humans, huge amounts of energy must be expended to make it… and it has a very high sodium content.

On the one hand, we have cattle grazing in a rural setting, eating grass and turning it into protein for human consumption.

The effect of this protein conversion process inside the cattle is the production of methane gas from cattle farts and this methane gas floats about the place causing mayhem?

On the other hand, we have huge crop production activity, with all the associated diesel consuming machinery and fertilizers plus the enormous amount of energy required to turn the eighteen plus ingredients and chemicals into highly processed foods. The CO2 gas produced from this broadacre farming and the associated manufacturing process is a far higher volume of gas than the methane from cattle farts.

And CO2 gas is the enemy.

So, as I see it – we are producing more CO2 gas to make fake meat so that we can save ourselves from the methane emitted in cattle farts from making real meat!

Huh? Where is the logic in that?

Seeking logic in this matter is futile. My Aristotelian Logic process tumbles wildly as I struggle to make sense of this….

We don’t like real meat because its production threatens our atmosphere with methane from cattle farts, and so, we are not going to eat it! OK so far.

However, we like the taste, the appearance of real meat and the protein we get from it; so we are going to create large volumes of CO2 gas to create fake meat that looks and tastes like real meat but makes us feel good by eating it because it is not real meat!

In December 2019, The New York Times, a paper which closely follows these global saving trends, reported that “ millennials are gobbling up fake meat like there is no tomorrow. “ My observation to that little gem is this – Millennials have expressed the view that we, our generation, have buggered the whole place up and they can't wait to take over running the place so they can make it right: well good for them, but if they are gobbling up the fake meat in volumes as reported in the New York Times, their sodium intake will far exceed the norm, their collective arteries will harden, they will all perish and we shall be left running the bloody show when we are all 145 years old plus because we eat healthy real meat.

Is that a good deal?

Einstein commented that only two things are infinite: the cosmos and human stupidity…

Draw your conclusions.

On Australia Day, which I shall celebrate on 26 January 2020, because I am a proud Australian and proud of our collective achievements, I shall hold a large barbecue of lamb for two reasons.

One, you know we all love it!

Two, apart from New Zealand, none of us know much about sheep farts.

Back to Beachmere May 2020

Beachmere’s Sesquicentenary continues to grow as the Back to Beachmere weekend gathers momentum.

From Friday, 15 May to Sunday, 17 May Beachmere people will definitely be the place to be as it launches Beachmere – Then and Now and hosts a Gala evening launching the weekend.

Saturday is a full day of events and activities with children’s games on the beach, the Sand garden competition, street parade and mini festival in Clayton Park and a bush dance at the Beachmere Hub – the newly renovated and refurbished building which has been both the Bowls and RSL club over recent years.

Entries open for 59th annual Training Awards

Training Awards and finally at the Australian Training Awards for their efforts working with local high school students and supporting their apprentices.

“Their success shows how a family business in regional Queensland can be the best in Australia and how important it is to recognise and celebrate high quality training achievements.”

Owners Mick and Amanda Astill said being named a regional finalist in 2018 inspired them to keep improving and working hard and advance further in the 2019 competition.

“It’s really nice to think about the lives we can change through training, the people who we can support and also for us; how much we’ve benefitted from training,” Mr Astill said.

The Queensland Training Awards will host seven regional finals in July with 11 awards available and the winners will go on to the State Gala Dinner in September, along with finalists for the large and small training providers of the year and the Premier’s Industry Collaboration Award.

“If you know an inspirational apprentice, trainee, student, employer, teacher or trainer, community initiative or training provider, please nominate them as a way to reward their commitment and encourage them to keep working towards their goals,” Ms Fentiman said.

Aman Meles was named the Bob Marshman Trainee of the Year and Equity VET Student of the Year in 2019 after completing his Certificate III in Community Services and is planning his career to help young people facing their own struggles.

“This award shows that VET works and it’s the future for our young people. I want to help young people who face similar situations as I faced,” Mr Meles said.

Queensland’s apprentices, trainers, VET students and employers can now nominate for the 59th annual Queensland Training Awards.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman today opened nominations for the prestigious statewide competition that will culminate in winners being announced at a gala event in Brisbane in September 2020.

“We want to see the best of our top training achievers recognised at this year’s awards including apprentices, trainees, teachers, employers and training organisations,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Vocational education and training (VET) has never been so important as we know that nine out of 10 jobs predicted to grow over the next five years will require a VET qualification.”

“I encourage everyone to get their entries in early. You can nominate yourself or be nominated in a one of 11 categories across the state’s seven regions.”

With the State Election coming up this October it’s time to start seriously considering who to vote for. To keep you informed on candidates and their platforms The Local Island and Surrounds News intends to interview each candidate.

Ali King, Labor’s candidate for Pumicestone In November of 2019, Ali King was amongst a collection of new candidates to join Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s team to contest in this year’s State Election.

Mother of two and former small business owner Ali King currently works for the State Government in the Office of the Health Minister.

Ms King has said on her platform “I’m passionate about making sure local people have what we need so we don’t fall through the cracks – whether it is road and transport infrastructure to get us home safely or safe and dignified options for people considering aged care” When she was growing up Ms King’s father suffered a terrible injury and was unable to go back to full-time work.

Whilst this created a tough situation for her family Ms King was thankful for the fact good public healthcare and quality education helped her make her way through school and into university, and eventually onto starting her own business.

“Pumicestone is a wonderful community – it’s incredibly beautiful and people here work hard on behalf of others, like our amazing Rural Fire Services.”

“I decided to run because I want to make sure locals have a strong representative who can get things done and make a difference in their lives.”

“Whether you are a mum or dad doing the juggle with young kids at school, an older person concerned about your future or a school leaver needing training to get a job, you deserve good local services and infrastructure to back you up.” Ms King said on her decision to run for the Pumicestone electorate.

Her family, upbringing, and work within employment services as well as the Health Minister’s Office have all contributed to shaping Ms King’s platform and what she stands for.

“I am passionate about aged care! Older Queenslanders built this State, and they deserve to know that if they go into aged care they will be treated with respect and decency.”

“I’m really proud of what the Queensland government has achieved for aged care. The new Health Transparency laws will require private aged care facilities to share their staffing levels on a public website. Queensland Labor has guaranteed safe staffing levels in state-owned aged care, and I’d like to see other aged care facilities do

“The Newman government sacked over 1400 health workers in our region, but since Annastacia Palaszczuk became Premier in 2015 we’ve seen more nurses, more doctors and more hospital beds delivered, as well as a massive redevelopment of Caboolture Hospital.

I’d be proud to be part of the work to continue to rebuild local health services and ensure our community doesn’t suffer those kinds of LNP cuts and sackings again.”

“My Dad was a carpenter before his accident and my brother has his own business as a builder, so I’m excited that QBuild in Caboolture is employing 80 more tradies and 40 more apprentices over the next twelve months. My goal will be to make sure QBuild only grows more from there.”

“It’s early days yet, but I am working hard to secure the commitments our community needs to flourish in a whole range of areas, including education and health. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements this year!” Ms King said when discussing the initiatives, she intends to push for if elected.

Of course, transport is a major concern for our island community. Ms King has said the following on transport concerns “I commute for work, so I know how frustrating it is to sit in traffic and juggle public transport.”

“The best way to get better connections for local buses is for our community to share their experiences. Translink plans its timetable and connections based on passenger numbers. If enough of us get together locally to demonstrate the need for changes on a particular route, I will take that to Translink as evidence of the need to make changes for local commuters.”

“Bribie Island Road needs to be a major focus too.”

“It’s great to hear that the upgrade at the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection will start later this year.”

“New traffic lights there will reduce the queuing and improve safety, especially for kids attending St Michael’s College.”

“With the recent crashes we’ve seen over the holidays creating delays for locals and visitors, it’s clear we need a long term plan for the whole of Bribie Island Road that prioritises upgrades for the most congested and dangerous sections.”

“I’ve written to Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey to convey our community’s concerns about the Bribie Island Road and asked him for an urgent briefing on what TMR is doing about it.”

“I’ve called on the Minister to work with me on a Bribie Island Road Action Plan that we can share with the community as soon as possible.”

Ms King is also aware of the community concerns regarding environmental matters, specifically the pelicans that roost upon Bribie Island Bridge’s lampposts.

“I’m always keen to listen to locals and stand up on the things that matter here that’s why I worked hard to get five extra pelican roosts installed on the Bribie Island Bridge. Now that we know the pelicans enjoy using the new roosts, I’m asking the Minister to get them installed on the other seven light poles across the Bridge as soon as possible.

“Hopefully we’ll soon see more of our pelican friends than ever before perched proudly to welcome visitors and locals across the bridge.” Ms King said.

$6 million to help bring tourists back to bushfireimpacted communities

JOINT STATEMENT Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud Minister for State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning Cameron Dick Scenic Rim, Southern Downs, Sunshine Coast and Noosa will be supported by a $6 million tourism recovery package after the southern Queensland spring bushfires.

The package is jointly funded by the federal and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management David Littleproud said the package would help attract more visitors so money could flow back into the regions.

“This is $6 million to stimulate local economies affected by the fires,” Minister Littleproud said.

“It will bring tourists back so businesses can open their doors and locals have a job to go to.

“This will put $1.5 million into tourism marketing and $500,000 for industry recovery officers.

“It also provides $1 million to restore trails in the renowned Lamington National Park.

“The best ways to help a community recover is to get the local economy moving, he said.

“We will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these communities and make more assistance available as it’s needed.”

Minister for State Development and Minister responsible for the QRA Cameron Dick said it was crucial to attract visitors back to bushfireimpacted areas.

“In Queensland, most of our tourist trade is centred on the natural environment: national parks, wildlife, vineyards,” Mr Dick said.

“The destruction of historic Binna Burra Lodge in particular has severely affected the Scenic Rim, with jobs lost and suppliers suffering.

“This exceptional circumstances package is about taking a holistic approach to community-led recovery initiatives.

“That’s why we’re also providing Southern Downs Regional Council and Scenic Rim Regional Council with $1.5 million each to invest in tourism recovery projects.

“This $6 million funding will support operators, improve infrastructure and help promote the best of southern Queensland to bring visitors back,” he said.

“It will build on the strengths of these regions and boost local economies.”

MICK'S PATCH

It’s great to be back in the Patch- 2020.

Happy New Year all. Hope you all had some time to relax and unwind over the holiday break. It seems most of us have returned back to work again already, myself included. There is still lots to do in the patch this month too. We were blessed to have some rainfall over Christmas, and it was joyous to hear the rain beating down all night knowing full well that our parched landscape will benefit immensely.

As a result, most lawns are looking a little greener about the place finally and while there still is a little moisture left in the soil profile. It’s the best time to get some liquid organic brews like seaweed, worm or fishtonics, applied or incorporated into the soil, lawns and gardens to assist to revitalise them all. Our soils were suffering so- much, in the months leading up to Christmas that applying any fertilisers or tonics may have shown little result as the turf grasses shut down from moisture stress to save themselves, but if you managed to treat your patch after the rain during the holidays- well done indeed!

Unfortunately, a lot of weeds took advantage of this opportunity to infiltrate and colonise any thinning or bare patches in the lawn and as a result they flourished, flowered and set seed while the droughtstressed swards were barely growing.

Interestingly, the definition of a weed- is just a plant, that generally grows or invades where mankind does not want it to grow.

So, it is amazing, that with our typicallysandy and mostly hydrophobic soils here on Bribie Island, which has trouble accepting and retaining moisture and contains- very little organic matter, can support much plant life at all- never mind in the times of drought. It just goes to show how resilient nature really is- as weeds and plants can encode in their seed- DNA, over their many years of struggle, their exact time to flower, fruit and set seed, and release them so they may lay dormant as they wait for moisture- to complete their mission and sprout, reproduce and try and dominate their surroundings accordingly. One of the many benefits of adding organic substances like compost and manures to your patch means- it will break down slowly and assist in moisture retention over time. If we use mineral salt based manufactured fertilisers on sandy, parched soils and gardens, we will run the risk of having to use extra irrigation to flush the salts and dissolve them to help prevent further dehydration to the root system. This happens when the moisture droplets contained in the pore spaces around the fine root hairs of plants or turf, can get vacuumed towards the mineral salts contained in the fertiliser.

(By Osmotic pressure). This is especially important to consider when rationing water for irrigation, if you rely on rainfall and don’t have the luxury- of quality bore water at your disposal.

I believe in using less chemicals and therefore promote the IPM- Integrated Pest Management- approach, which supports creating and maintaining sustainable landscapes in the urban environment. As part of the IPM- plans, one of the core principles is called- Cultural Control. This cultural control method refers to strategies,

Grevillea ‘Cooroora Cascade’

Grevillea ‘Cooroora Cascade’, is a beautiful, hardy and vigorous- low growing Australian native shrub, that grows well in most soil types on the east coast of Australia. And of course, grows extremely well here on Bribie Island and surrounding districts. ‘Cooroora Cascade’, has a prostrate growth habit and as it spreads, sends its orange- yellow, toothbrush shaped flower heads, along the ground in the summer and autumn months. ‘Cooroora Cascade’, can spread to 3 metres in circumference and reach 500 mm tall when mature. Like its name sake, the flowers that range from 10 cm to 25 cm long, tend to cascade below the beautiful, fine and soft, fern-like, needle thin green foliage as the plant matures. They thrive in sandy, mildly acidic to neutral pH soil. G. ‘Cooroora Cascade’, is fast growing and great for erosion control on loose banks and of course- attracts the bees, nectar eating birds and butterflies, and is an excellent plant choice for the low maintenance garden or ground cover. With all the drought about, ‘Cooroora Cascade’ is thriving, keeping the pollinators busy. Great waterwise plant and one of my- Australian native favourites indeed! such as hand pulling weeds before they flower or pruning diseased or pest affected foliage such as trimming citrus leaf miner damage- as it appears, rather than reaching out for insecticide as a knee- jerk reaction, and instead using more organic solutionswhere possible. The healthier the lawn the thicker it may be, and some weeds can be hand pulled rather than sprayed with selective herbicide. In the landscape, mulching frequently to slow weeds, retain moisture and protect delicate plant roots from the harsh midday sun, is a great cultural control method also. It’s really great to see that now days, a lot of fertiliser manufacturers, growers and farmers have branched off to a more organic approach.

I have personally incorporated an organic herbicide that is very useful for situations like garden beds and pathways, also kills moss and algae on contact. This commercially available product is called‘Slasher Weedkiller’ and is an organic, nonselective herbicide made from nonanoic acid which destroys weeds on contact quickly. It’s best to keep the product well away from trunks of existing shrubs, and delicate root systems though, as this product is corrosive by nature, but not residual in the soil- but it works! We had a lovely letter from one of our readers, Noel Wormald from Sandstone Point! Please email the editor if you have any questions at all about plants, landscaping and general gardening.

I will be happy to answer your questions in the next issue. Email belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au Noel writes in to explain that he planted a mango tree in a fairly large pot plant container 3 or 4 years ago. Noel was amazed when the potted mango actually produced fruit this year, some developing fruits did drop off, but he states there are still five fruits growing on his tree and he is not sure if they will mature at all. Noel also states that he has not seen before or heard of a mango tree in a pot.

Well, thanks Noel, for writing in and letting us know of your potted mango tree indeed. I can confirm though, and with the modern varieties now available, it is surely possible to have a long-term mango tree growing in a pot. I am not sure whether your tree was planted by a seed or you purchased a grafted cultivar from a nursery, but the fact you have kept it alive and healthy over the last few years and the fact it has now fruited is a real testament to you. When planting and potting up grafted mango trees, the general rule of thumb is if they flower and set fruit in the 1st year, its best to cut all the flowers off to give the tree a chance to grow and establish a stronger framework of branches.

In the 2nd year of flowering, you trim some of the flowering heads off to try and limit the fruits formation, with the aim to harvest 3 full size mangos, and in the 3rd year, generally the trees tend to drop any fruits it can’t handle.

In regard to your tree, Noel, it sounds like it has matured enough to sustain growing three to five- full size fruits, as its nearly 4 years in the pot. And like dwarf citrus plants, they tend to drop fruits It can’t handle naturally. Help us Lobby the State Government, we need a New Bridge - Sign our Petition

The LOCAL Island and Surrounds NEWS

To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The petition of electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws to the attention of the House Bribie Island Bridge has been an ongoing issue for decades in the electorate of Pumicestone and our State Government have not listened to the community. The population is growing rapidly, and we need a new bridge to support the growth in our region.

The Bribie Island Bridge & Road Community Reference Committee (BIBR CRC) is starting a petition for a new Bribie Island Bridge.

BIBR CRC is a recently formed group dedicated to advocating on behalf of the Bribie Island community to get the best results for Bribie Island Bridge with additional lanes. And after concluding their first meeting on 4th of December, they’ve decided the Bribie Bridge is a top priority.

The committee is not a decision-making body but rather will perform an advisory and consultative role. It shall perform this role by investigating and finding reports on the bridge and its condition, evaluating the current status quo of traffic movement/ volume, and exploring previous planning projects undertaken by the Government.

Acting on behalf of the community BIRB will be meeting with all levels of government and will be inviting the State Minister for Roads and Transport to their meetings along with the heads of the Department of Roads.

This newly formed group will provide a forum for discussion, vision planning and feedback encompassing the views and ideas of local residents. And will be providing an additional channel for the State Member to inform, seek feedback and be proactive in the community.

Made up of local Bribie and Ningi residents and small business owners, the committee encourages the community to have their say, communicate concerns, and discuss what they would like to see.

January Fishing Report

The start of summer has been a bumper season for fishing, with a big variety of fish caught and plenty of impressive catches among them.

Last month, we talked about the steady weather conditions -these have continued to prevail over the SE. Daily temperatures have held, water temperature has lifted to 25 degrees and the wind is still coming from the NE.

A reminder here: please drift and don’t anchor in the area just north of Pacific Harbour – besides being the site of the specially built oyster cages, which can be easily damaged by your anchor, it is also very near Kakadu Beach, which is the summer resting area for thousands of migratory wading birds.

The southern end, between the lock entrance and Buckley’s Hole, has been a favourite spot for finding some pretty good-sized fish, including bream, snapper and grassy sweetlip. Pear used prawns to land a 50cm morwong just outside the lock entrance. Fiona also did well, catching bream on prawns.

Flathead have been harder to find than usual lately but there have been some “stonkers” taking a lure. The water being very warm, fishing for them on the sandflats is not always successful, and the best places have been the gutters, especially on a rising tide. The rain at Christmas mixed up the water enough to get the flathead going for a couple of days, and they were being readily caught on the sandbanks at the mouths of Ningi and Elimbah Creeks. Matt and family released a 68cm flathead, after catching it near Banksia Beach, just after Christmas, using soldier crabs for bait. Hard-body lures were also working well at the time, over the flats.

tuskfish, and there have been plenty of them. They’ve been taking all sorts of bait, but prawns have been most consistent. The tuskfish is related to the parrot fish; a beautiful full-bodied fish, with white flesh. To target them, try for areas with a bit of rock or rubble.

A sturdy rod, a bit of trace and a small, strong hook, will help land the tuskfish.

Tania’s crew caught four just north of Ningi Creek, using prawns. Other places holding them: on the south side of the bridge, before the Sandstone Hotel jetty, or in Wright’s Creek, on a rising tide.

A less popular fish is the slimy grinner and there have been lots of them about, too! “No good for eating, no good for bait” is the general opinion, but when Dennis caught one, using prawns near Bongaree IGA, he cleaned it and threw it straight on the barbie – “sweet as, and the bones were so soft, you just ate through them!”

At the time of writing, we’re all still waiting for the summer storm season to kick in, although we have been promised some excitement over the weekend (Jan11), with a bit of rain to follow.

Chicken thigh fillet is a common summer bait for bream (maybe because too much was bought in preparation for Christmas!); whatever – it worked for Angelo and Mel, who caught three 35cm bream, as well as a sand flathead, while anchored on the sandbank opposite White Patch.

With fairly constant E/NE afternoon winds, boating has been a little uncomfortable further out in the bay and a lot of anglers have been choosing to stay within the Pumicestone Passage.

And there’s been plenty to keep fishers busy here. What the winds have been doing, is sending a steady supply of natural bait into the Passage, which keeps the bream and other fish keen.

The long spells of settled weather are good for making bream, snapper and sweetlip relaxed and hungry, which is good news for fishing. Some of the best fishing days have started with a gentle rain in the early morning, clearing to gentle breezes and clear skies. Lots of 30cm+ bream are being taken home on days like this, and from all through the Passage.

Daniel and Ricki had a good haul (three big bream, a grunter and summer whiting), again with prawns and yabbies, near Shag Island. On the same day, brothers David and Charlie, had seven 30cm+ bream between them, from a drift past the oyster regeneration project, outside Pacific Harbour.

There can be no greater gift than a happy , healthy and prosper ous year ahead.

That is my wish to all in Pumicestone. It is also my wish that priority issues in the electorate receive the attention they deserve by the State Government. Each year, well in advance of the State Budget being handed down, I pen a letter to relevant Government Ministers about our Electorate’s needs. These Ministers sit around the Cabinet Table and consider budget allocations and priorities for the year ahead and forward estimates – and it’s time Pumicestone received its fair share of the pie. As I am accountable to my electorate, I want to share the content of my letters with you as this is what the Government Ministers (along with the Premier and Treasurer) will read and ultimately respond to.
