FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK
Seasons Greetings
Hello Readers
Welcome to issue 45 and our Christmas issue of the LOCAL News. What a year it’s been! This issue you will read about the fight for our Bribie Island Roads & Bridge to start work in 2020, the community, the local politicians from both State & Federal are pleading with our state Government to start work NOW! Though out this issue are free events to attend for locals and visitors over the Christmas and New Year.
Cranky Lizard is fast becoming a very well-read column and in the letters to the editor you will see some communication from our readers and Cranky responds to them.
WOW, there are so many talented young children in our region. The Colouring in really has become very popular and I would like to thank each and everyone of you who has entered. It’s great to see so many entrants. A MESSAGE - You don’t need to leave our region to buy your Christmas Presents, our local businesses have a wide range of stock, so please support them. I personally would like to thank all our advertisers for their support throughout the year. I hope you have a really successful holiday period; I know it’s been very tough for many of you over the last few months, with some businesses being 40% down. Support your locals!!!!!
Lastly the Team from the LOCAL News would like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and an exceptional New Year for 2020. We look forward to working all with you in the new year. Enjoy your break with Family and Friends and create wonderful memories. Warm regards
Belinda Ferguson Dear Editor, it was most disappointing to see Petrol Stations ripping off loyal customers with petrol prices jumping up by 43 cents on the island. Monday price was $1.329 per litre and Tuesday it had jumped 43 cents to $1.759. Yes it certainly is the season for rip offs, please justify the 43 cent increase overnight! “Follllaaa laaa laaa laa the laaa laaala”. I find it sad that businesses should have the need to rip people off with Christmas almost upon us! Farley\

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The views expressed in Letters to the Editor are not necessarily those of the editor or publishers of the newspaper.
Letter to the Editor Cranky Lizard: your economic analysis is as woeful as your scientific knowledge. A transition to renewable energy by itself can't "retard" the economy, as claimed in your column in Issue 43. As economists never cease telling us, markets adjust supply and demand between producers and consumers, within the bounds set by technology and policy. If new technology appears on the horizon or external policy settings change, markets accommodate. That's what markets do. Certainly, specific companies can suffer as technology and policy change. Indeed, whole industries can become obsolete, but the flows of money released when that happens circulate elsewhere in the economy. Unless of course they are leeched off overseas, which is a consequence of free trade policy, not environmental policy. Your accusation that climate activists have no solutions to real problems is comprehensively false. Scientists and environmentalists have been offering solutions to both energy supply and emissions trajectory challenges since the 1970s, to anyone who would listen. The flow of reports continues today. Just arrived is a 45-page report A 1.5°C Compatible Carbon Budget for Queensland that explains soberly how modern electrical technology can replace the technology of steam engines. On a national scale, there is the Beyond Zero Emissions blueprint and, internationally, the Australian-run website https://skepticalscience.com/ . Of course, if you continue to acquire your climate knowledge from The Australian newspaper, you will remain misinformed. Geoff Edwards Cranky Lizards Response Dear Mr Edwards, President, The Royal Society of Queensland. You will notice if you read my comments carefully, that I do not do assessments, analyses or scientific papers. I write opinion pieces. My opinions result from my interpretation of events and matters which feature in our daily lives – either in the form of press releases, conversations with other Australians in both rural and urban environments and my observations of human behavior. And. Opinions are just that: opinions. You are quite welcome to disagree with my opinions, it is a bit undignified, for you, the President of The Royal Society of Queensland, an old and prestigious scientific body in Queensland, to cast your disagreement of my opinion in such a personal and disparaging manner. Kind Regards, Cranky Lizard.
Issue 45 2019 - We're here for you! The LOCAL Island and Surrounds NEWS
To the Editor As a "Feature" writer, Cranky Lizard is first and foremost, a Journalist. Letter writers may have equal experience from the University of Life but are not given identical space for their views. The reasons given for the pseudonym are pretty weak. The other "journalists" - Harvey, Sasha, Damian and Ernie do not hide behind a pseudonym. If you are well known in the "community" then why hide? I live in the community and I certainly do not know your identity. Perhaps I am not privileged to live in "the community" of which you speak. Cranky does not annoy or irritate me. I feel sorry that he/she does not have the confidence to join us in the real world. Thomas J Mahon. Cranky Lizards Response Dear Thomas, Thank You for your letter dated 21 November 2019. We appreciate your interest in The Local Newspaper. I am sad, that you feel sorry that I am not able to face the community with my real name. Many modern writers and journalists use a pseudonym in their daily writing, it is an old practice, but it is increasingly popular in today’s media environment. Cranky Lizard deliberately expresses provocative opinions, and I stress that Cranky Lizard expresses opinions, not analyses or scientific papers or lists of facts. Cranky Lizard’s views are based on a personal interpretation of the realities of everyday life. The purpose of the articles is to invite comment, critical or complimentary: it does not matter which if the comments are primarily objective and not subjective. You would not be aware that many journalists, in today's’ toxic media environment are subjected to personal online threats to their families, their person and their employers. It is not a widely published fact. The best protection from this insanity is the use a pseudonym. Regular names can also be used as pseudonyms, and many are: I, however, chose Cranky Lizard because it works for me! Please do not feel sorry for me, Thomas, I am very comfortable in my skin, even if it is a bit crinkly and green! I repeat, Thank You for your interest in the Local Paper. Cranky Lizard.

Merry Christmas!
I feel that I am about to launch into defending a name that conjures up a whole lot of unwelcoming thoughts linked to a set of paradigms built around the face of a pork producing beast. Although I have at times made a ‘note to self’ about the potential relationship between a Pig Face and specific humans, I have never accused someone using that name. I usually use single descriptors like, Rat, Mouse, Snake, Snail, horse, cow, goat, donkey, cat, giraffe and the list goes on.

DESTINATION PIGFACE
Gabi, Janny, Zac at the beach
one question about potential new staff – ‘Would we hang out with these people outside of work? - And we do.”
Pigface Basket with Sea Perch, Scallops, Salad, Mooloolaba Prawns and chips To set the record straight and as many of our readers will know, Pigface or Carpobrotus is an Australian Native Ground Creeping Succulent found on the shores of our coastline. The root system of the Pigface holds the dunes together, helping prevent the sand from slipping into the sea. Pigface also happens to be the name of the latest funky café located at Woorim Beach on Bribie Island, Queensland.
I was informed by someone ‘in the know’ that I needed to visit the team at Pigface Café on Bribie Island and learn more about why this café has become such a huge hit.
When I arrived at Pigface Café, I was greeted by the owners Janny Mann, Zac Matheson and Gabriella Pezzuto. Janny, Zac and Gabi have unique talents and professional backgrounds all weaved together by a passion for food, community, the sustainability of our oceans and a love for each other. This powerhouse family trio came together to launch Pigface Café in July 2018. Many people these days are pupils of origins and flavors and addicts of life’s pleasures which often begins with a morning coffee and concludes with something wine and seafood in the afternoon. When Gabi produced a latte and a few iced coffees for our interview, We only purchase Sustainable Certified Seafood Products which means leaving enough fish in the ocean, respecting habitats and ensuring people who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods.
The Pigface Menu is diverse, exciting, fresh and simple and provides options for everyone. The menu extends to include a home-made Pigface Gelato which is sourced for a 4th generation Gelato company, Delizia Gelato & Sorbet. They also produce made-toorder salads, sauces, crumbed fish and chicken combined with a secret chicken salt recipe. I am told that the Pigface Café also produces a Pigface Gelato and Jam made from the edible fruit of the Pigface Plant – when it is season. The welcoming party at the Pigface Café Zac said, “We want our Bribie Island community to know that we are not just another café ordering the cheapest products to gain maximum profits. It is the complete opposite - we source quality suppliers that deliver quality products based on our life values of environmental sustainability and care for our community. We guarantee that our fish is fresh and ‘Certified Sustainable’ which simply means that all seafood is MSC (Marine Sustainability Council) Certified and badged,” he said. “Sometimes this means that we may not stock certain fish types. If our customers ask us about our quality system, we will be happy to talk about why we choose specific fish. The most important thing for people to know is that our fish is fresh and tastes fresh which is why we were ranked at No. 13 in Queensland (2019) for our Fish and Chips. Our most popular fish is our Gold Band Snapper from Harvey Bay – it’s a good size and it’s delicious.” Even the chips are all natural, gluten free and sourced from a Victorian Potato Farm – the Pigface Chips have zero preservatives and no coatings – real Australian Spuds.
Ironically, it was Zac’s mum Janny who first moved to Bribie Island and discovered the café space at Woorim Beach back in early 2018. Janny said, “I knew that we would have a great team with Zac and Gabi, however we had never operated a café or business like this. It’s amazing because for something that we thought we could run by ourselves - we now employ 12 staff For a business that we thought we could run ourselves, we now employ 12 staff from our local community including ourselves. We have high standards - our customers expect quality and therefore we expect quality from our suppliers from our local community including ourselves. Thank goodness Zac has an incredible trade and business background and Gabi knows what it takes to win customers and create great coffee”, she said. “We have been very fortunate to have maintained our staff since we opened in 2018. We tend to be guided by Gabi when it comes to staff and rosters. As a team, we ask ourselves
It was a pleasure meeting Janny, Zac and Gabi. There was only ever going to be one outcome when you combined a Plumber, Personal Trainer and Hospitality Professional together three bloody great Australians building a community business based on a sustainable future, delicious coffee and awesome fish.
Go and check it out – Jump onto the Pigface Facebook Site - its’ worth a day trip from anywhere or stay overnight on Bribie Island. Make sure you tell the guys if it’s your birthday – the Pigafaces love to sing to their customers.
Q&A What makes the quality of your fish ‘Award-Winning’?
That question answers itself. It’s the quality of the fish. Dads commercial fishing background helped a lot. He knows all about good quality eating fish that we can sell for reasonable prices with constant supply. Then in the shop our focus is on making your experience the same each time...consistency is key.
I was impressed. You know when you taste a flavor in something that’s made with skill and knowledge – that’s the Pigface Coffee Brand which is blended and roasted for Pigface Café on the Sunshine Coast – delicious. As Gabi says, “I grew up in Tamworth, NSW and have developed a good knowledge and set of business skills for the hospitality industry. I believe that if people come here and try us, I guarantee they will love it and stay because we have a common philosophy based on ‘Fresh, Flavor and Sustainable and our coffee is the best.” From a historic viewpoint, Janny and her son Zac come from a secondgeneration Western Australian Fishing Family having lived across the Western Australian and Queensland Coast for many years. It’s not surprising when Zac and Janny speak passionately about quality products, sustainable fishing and environmental responsibility – it’s in their blood.
Pigface Café opens at 8.30am on Weekdays and 7am on Weekends. The café tends to shut much later in summer. Pigface is open Christmas Day – checkout their Facebook page events – The Facebook Event Page reads, “Christmas Day at Pigface from 11am all day, Full Menu + Oysters & Prawns – Yes BYO.
What makes Pig Face Coffee so unique?
As a team, we went through a blind taste test with our Sunshine Coast Coffee supplier and all put our favorite mystery blend numbers in a hat. As we discussed, the different tastes and qualities of the blends were put to the vote and we had all picked the same blend. The tasty PIGFACE COFFEE was born.

We’re not too sure if there is a secret or if we just happened to be very lucky with the legends we have on our team. Most of our team members have been with us since the beginning which helps create a good dynamic. We all get along in our social lives, but we all know when it’s time for heads down - bums-up. That is something as owners we are very grateful for and do not take for granted. Together we are 'the Pigfacers'

We have felt a great sense of community since opening Pigface Cafe and enjoy the many good conversations and knowledge from the locals and the tourists. How do you maintain a healthy relationship while running business?
Ha-ha who said we did?? Communication and the determination to keep going through thick and thin is something we try to regularly remind each other of. If we forget, our team members are happy to reiterate that point to us. Which we do need from time to time. All that aside, go for a walk along the beach fixes almost everything If you had an opportunity to make one change to our society..…what would you change?
Where to start with this question? There are so many things hypothetically we would all like to change, but the one that defiantly hurts our industry and impacts all human life is the simple compound, Plastic. Start date for Bribie Island Road Upgrades still uncertain by Sasha Hanton
No specific date has been set or at least has not been publically announced, for the upgrades to Bribie Island Road, for which the Federal Government provided the State Government 20 million dollars. Apart from works to install traffic signals at the Old Toorbul Point Road Intersection, for which $10.4 million has been allocated and slated for early 2020, there is no indication of when work will commence. The work for a minor regrade on Bribie Island Road sections: 0-19.06km is in the budget for 2020/2021. The upgrades have been petitioned for by local residents and Local Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP, whose Fix Bribie Island Road petition has been running for 18 months now. Once upgrades commence it could mean an influx of work in the area, providing much needed jobs. Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP said “We follow up monthly with the Deputy Prime Minister’s office as to the status of the project as we get no response from state departments generally. Unfortunately the answer is always much the same “no change, no exact start date”. As you can see when you open the link below and go to page 79 the lights are due 19/20 and 20/21 and the upgrade is due to start 20/21. The $20,000,000 for the upgrade was approved and available by the federal government in July 2018. Pretty disgraceful really.”
The document Mr Young refers to is Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP). It is a public document and readers can view it by visiting the below website and downloading the PDF, this is the document for the North Coast District: https://www.publications.qld.gov.au/ dataset/queensland-transport-and-roadsinvestment-program-qtrip-2019-20to-2022-23/resource/a743856e-91aa4e07-97a6-0212e03f79f4 A spokesperson from the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has said “A total of $10.4 million is allocated to install traffic signals at the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and Old Toorbul Point Road intersection. Construction is expected to start in the first half of 2020. The construction timeframe will be confirmed closer to the time. “We’re continuing to work with the Australian Government to progress required reports and seek the release of $20 million federal funding for Caboolture-Bribie Island Road upgrades. Planning has identified several strategic priorities for Caboolture-Bribie Island Road. “We have completed early planning for the future upgrade of the remaining two-lane sections of Caboolture-Bribie Island Road through Ningi. Planning is also well advanced for the section between Hickey and Saint Road intersections. “Any further upgrades on CabooltureBribie Island Road will be considered as part of this review process. No funding has not been allocated to a specific project at this time.” In the wake of Simone Wilson MP being ejected by the chamber for speaking out about this issue, the Federal Member for Longman Mr Terry Young sent this message regarding the Money from the Morrison Government directly to us.
In the last sitting week of the Queensland Parliament for 2019, I was ejected from the Chamber for nothing else but standing up for my community. Some of you may have seen my FaceBook posts about this event @ SimoneWilsonMP or read about it in the media as it got a little coverage. Road upgrades are a priority for the Pumicestone Electorate with our two major transport routes being seriously neglected – Bribie Island Road and Beachmere Road. The Queensland Transport Minister had the floor and was using his time to slap himself on the back about other road infrastructure upgrades in the South East corner. Not one mention however about the $20 million of Federal funding to fix Bribie Island Road!
South East Queenslanders are getting a timely reminder that “every drop counts” in a five-week extensive advertising campaign. The initiative is being rolled-out after the latest Seqwater survey showed 35 per cent of people reported they were unaware of just how much water they used. And even more said they didn’t get enough information on how to save water. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said once again the community had a vital role to play in helping manage the region’s drinking water supply. “We are reaching out to everyone in the south east to ease back on their water usage with the “every drop counts’ campaign,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “Two thirds of our state is in drought and over the past few years we have seen below-average inflows into the 40 dams and reservoirs that make up the SEQ water grid. “There are simple things we can all do now that don’t impact on our lifestyle but can make a big difference in conserving water. “For example, checking household plumbing for leaks, not watering in the heat of the day and remembering to put your pool cover on when the pool's not being used.” The need for a new push to get people to conserve water was highlighted by a Seqwater survey conducted in July. It revealed, 35 per cent of 1400 respondents said they are unaware of
Needless to say, I took the opportunity to remind the Minister (across the floor)
Thank you to all our clients. We wish you a Happy Christmas & New Year celebrating with family & friends!

just how much water is used in their household and 41 per cent said they don’t receive enough information on how to save water. However, 70 per cent said they are concerned about future water shortages in SEQ and 90 per cent would comply with water restrictions if they had to. “South-east Queenslanders stepped up during the Millennium Drought and played their part. “They reduced consumption from 300 litres of water per person per day to as low as 120 litres of water per person per day just by being waterwise. “With the average water consumption now at 200 litres per day per person, I’m sure south-east Queenslanders are ready to step up and help again.” The Bureau of Meteorology is currently forecasting a hot, dry summer over 2019/20 with below average rainfall. Natural Resources Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said with SEQ dam levels below 60 per cent capacity it is time for everyone to do their bit to preserve our drinking water supply. “After the Millennium Drought people said they wanted to be warned early about the potential for another big dry so that they could respond early. “That is why we are talking with SEQ now rather than after the wet season.” Seqwater will continue to monitor the region’s dams and operate the water grid to best manage the region’s water supply. The “every drop counts” campaign starts on radio, buses and petrol pumps from today, followed on 1 December by ads on SEQ television, Spotify, and YouTube. Seqwater is running the campaign in partnership with water retailers Queensland Urban Utilities, Unitywater and the Redland, Logan and Gold Coast councils. The water retailers will supplement the campaign using their own communication and customer channels.

that my community sits waiting on him to do the required work to get this funding on the ground in our electorate – it’s been 18 months for heavens sake. I called him out for neglecting our needs and in doing so was swiftly ejected from the Chamber for one hour.
I may not be recontesting this seat in October, but I will spend every last minute I have until then fighting for the Pumicestone Electorate, even if this means getting booted out of the Chamber again.

The Power of Giving
Amelia Strazdins Christmas is without a doubt the biggest holiday of the year, and certainly one of the biggest displays of consumerism. In the month of December people across the world become obsessed with the bright coloured lights, catchy songs and decorations. Such celebrations and traditions hold a special place in many people’s hearts as they fondly recall past Christmases and begin to get excited for the start of a new year. Whilst everyone loves the holiday, it often comes attached with a large price tag. However, this year for some the focus isn’t on gifts but rather a home, a place to celebrate the momentous holiday. Unfortunately, in light of the recent and ongoing bushfires across New South Wales, Queensland and various parts of Australia, many families have lost their homes and belongings only weeks before Christmas. Each year the money we spend on gifts proves that we under-

stand the importance of giving to those we love, but this year I urge you to give not only to those you hold close to your heart but also to those who have lost everything. The impact of the Australian bushfires can be seen across the east coast and has impacted not only people but various animal species. Many of us have been fortunate enough to have not been directly impacted by the bushfires and therefore may celebrate Christmas as normal. For those without houses, who have lost pets and belongings, this Christmas will be classified as far from the normal, joyous celebrations. Perhaps the most important gift that you may give in 2019 is that to a person that has lost more than we could ever imagine. Donations do not only need to be in the form of money; food, clothing items or household items are all useful and help get one step closer to assisting people in getting their lives back in order. It is important to also take the time and recognise the sacrifice that

our firefighters, ambulance services and many charities have made to help protect us against the fires and the support that has been provided. Under these organisations it is also important to acknowledge all the volunteers and the time they have given. Giving does not only need to be about donating money or items, but simply giving your time helps many people, from those who have been impacted by the fires to those who have dedicated their time saving lives. Whilst this year there is a focus on those impacted by the bushfires, each year families and people across Australia struggle at Christmas. The act of giving is not limited to one year, or one season. Pick your favourite charity or a cause you are passionate about and give your time to the cause or donate- it is up to you. This Christmas help give to a cause that is going to make a difference or save a life.

Bribie Clean Up by Sasha Hanton
Mojo Café in Woorim is rolling out a new incentive designed to encourage beach goers to clean up.
Living on the island and owning Mojo’s Café for seven years now Ian Moxham is passionate about Bribie Island. Mr Moxham said “I’m very community orientated, I’ve spent a lot of money to be here and I also own a home here on Bribie as well. I’ve been a member of the SES. So, you know it’s all about doing something for my community, I’m not going anywhere this is where I live, so you know let’s just try and keep it as beautiful as it is.”
“What I want to try and do is get people aware of actually taking their rubbish with them, I love that they come here to the island and they enjoy all our facilities but take your rubbish home. That’d be great or at least put it in the bins that are provided everywhere by council. I’m just going to try and give them an incentive to pick up and clean up before they leave so keeps our beautiful, pristine, beaches looking that way all year round.” He said. The incentive offer of coffee or water is aimed to encourage everybody to take part in doing something for the community.
Mr Young took Federal Health Minister the Hon. Greg Hunt to the Bribie Respite Centre in late August this year, following a Health Forum at the Bribie Island RSL which saw 200 locals register to attend, where Bribie Respite Centre Services Manager Joanne Allison-Schouw outlined the plan for the future of the Bribie Respite to Minister Hunt and Mr Young. Ms Allison-Schouw said she was encouraged by the meeting. “Although the minister made no promises, as this is actually under the State’s responsibilities, the Federal government have funded this type of project before. “I encouraged Mr Young to pursue it with the relevant ministers.” Mr Young met with the Minister for the Aged, Youth and Sport Senator Richard Colebeck in September and after the meeting was quietly confident of getting the funding. “Due to the fact that this financial year’s budgets were done prior to the May 18 election, it has proved a problem with getting project funding up and running immediately.

By offering a free coffee/water for those who collect a bucket of rubbish off the beach, cafe owner Ian Moxham hopes to inspire those visiting the island to help out.
Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP says the fight for federal funding to accommodate overnight respite on Bribie Island is beginning to take shape.
Well positioned just before the entrance to Woorim Beach Mojo Café is hard to miss, and with bright yellow signs and big black writing the signs offering this incentive are very eye catching. Drop in to Mojo’s Café to grab a bucket, head onto the beach to do some clean up and then once your bucket is full head on back to the café to enjoy a free coffee/water for your efforts to keep Bribie Island clean.
Pumicestone snubbed in Labor’s school air-conditioning stakes Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson says the State Government has failed to include any schools in her electorate in its recent air-conditioning announcement*.
“Not one school in Pumicestone has been put on the list, leaving our kids and teachers to swelter through the hot summer ahead”, Ms Wilson said.
“They’ve cherrypicked schools for airconditioning by using heat discomfort data, a combination of the highest average apparent temperature data and the highest number of school days in Term 1 and Term 4 above 30°C.
“I’d challenge anyone in the State Government to come and sit in one of our un-airconditioned classrooms in the Pumicestone Electorate and see if they can stand the heat our kids and teachers have to suffer”, Ms Wilson said. Ms Wilson noted that it has taken the LNP’s push on air-conditioning classrooms to move the State Government into action.
“Whilst Pumicestone has been snubbed, I am pleased that the LNP’s pressure has resulted in the Palaszczuk Government getting moving to aircondition some other schools sooner. “It’s small pickings though as only the LNP has a plan to air-condition every State School classroom in Queensland.
“However, they are fast learning in Canberra how dogged I can be when I am fighting for the people of Longman.”
“That commitment includes Bribie Island State School which has been put at the top of the LNP’s list”, Ms Wilson said.
The REIQ is asking those concerned about the State Government’s proposed rental reforms to send a clear message of opposition, by posting their local Member of Parliament a blank key, along with the message ‘our homes are in your hands’.

Send a key to your local MP – REIQ urges action over rental reforms The Send a Key campaign is part of the REIQ’s overall push to convince the State Government to reconsider the reforms, which have the potential to destroy Queensland’s rental market.

the proposed reforms.
“If you’ve not yet emailed the Premier, please do so. If you have, then join us in
“Since launching our campaign, we’ve had an overwhelming response from the community, who have collectively sent the
Premier more than 5000 emails, expressing their outrage at these proposed new laws,” said REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella.
“Both property owners and tenants realise that these reforms will damage the stability of the market, therefore impacting everyone involved. “But we can’t stop now.
“We must continue to let the State Government know that we don’t accept

Help us Lobby the State Government, we need a New Bridge - Sign our Petition
The Bribie Island Bridge & Road Community Reference Committee (BIBR CRC) is starting a petition for a new Bribie Island Bridge. BIBR CRC is a recently formed group dedicated to advocating on behalf of the Bribie Island community to get the best results for Bribie Island Bridge with additional lanes. And after concluding their first meeting on 4th of December, they’ve decided the Bribie Bridge is a top priority. The committee is not a decision-making body but rather will perform an advisory and consultative role. It shall perform this role by investigating and finding reports on the bridge and its condition, evaluating the current status quo of traffic movement/ volume, and exploring previous planning projects undertaken by the Government. Acting on behalf of the community BIRB will be meeting with all levels of government and will be inviting the State Minister for Roads and Transport to their meetings along with the heads of the Department of Roads. This newly formed group will provide a forum for discussion, vision planning and feedback encompassing the views and ideas of local residents. And will be providing an additional channel for the State Member to inform, seek feedback and be proactive in the community. Made up of local Bribie and Ningi residents and small business owners, the committee encourages the community to have their say, communicate concerns, and discuss what they would like to see. You see there is a petition here which you can cut out or request an online copy. If you’d like to reach out to BIRB you can contact them via email on newbribiebridge@ gmail.com
To: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland The petition of electors of the Division of Pumicestone draws to the attention of the House Bribie Island Bridge has been an ongoing issue for decades in the electorate of Pumicestone and our State Government have not listened to the community. The population is growing rapidly, and we need a new bridge to support the growth in our region. Your petitioners therefore request the House to Act now and start work on building another 2 lanes to the Bribie Island Bridge. The Federal Government has 20 mil available to assist with the cost of upgrading Bribie Island Road and we request after decades of being ignored we want you to start the feasibility study and get on with building a new bridge now. If you wish to sign this petition cut it out and email it to belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au or post to The LOCAL News, Island and surrounds, PO Box 1019, Bongaree QLD 4507

Probus Members Honoured World-class fishing experience not a passing FAD Queensland fishers are set to reel in a great catch with the installation of 10 new fish attracting devices (FADs) off the southeast Queensland in the first week of December
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the FADs are floating buoys tethered offshore to attract fish. “We’re creating a world-class experience by investing $1 million in these structures that will attract sports fish species including Mahi Mahi (dolphin fish), cobia and mackerel,“ Mr Furner said. “The added benefit of making it more likely that you’ll hook one of these species is that it takes some of the pressure off snapper and pearl perch, which are currently overfished and stocks are very low.
“These FADs have been installed in ten locations from Double Island Point to the Gold Coast this week by the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol from its vessel the KI Ross.
Mr Furner said almost 1 million Queenslanders had enjoyed recreational fishing at least one over the last year,
making the sector an important driver of jobs and tourism.
“A few weeks ago we asked fishers to have their say on the proposed locations and suggestions for other places to install these FADs and 90 per cent of respondents said they loved the idea,“ he said. “There has been an overwhelming response from the public to the program.
“We’ll take some of their suggestions for other locations for these structures to talk to potential partners who may be interested in matching funding to expand the program in South East Queensland or more widely.
“We believe that this initiative will help to strengthen world class recreational fishing in Queensland, while giving snapper and pearl perch stocks an opportunity to rebuild.
“By encouraging recreational fishers to target species other than snapper and pearl perch, we can ensure a sustainable fishery for our children and grandchildren so they can enjoy fishing for these iconic Queensland species for years to come.“
Member for Sandgate Stirling Hinchliffe said fishing was an important part of the Queensland way of life.
“My own community includes thousands of recreational fishers and it is great to see us creating more opportunities for them to enjoy fishing,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “It is important for local jobs in this community and in many others along the Queensland coast, from bait and tackle shops to accommodation and tourism operations.
GPS locations of the FADs are available on the Department’s website at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au and will be promoted through Fisheries Queensland social media.
FADs are for the benefit and enjoyment of all and we remind people not to moor on the FADs and to be courteous to other people fishing in the area.
Three long-serving members of one of Bribie Island’s top social clubs, The Probus Club of Bribie Island Inc, were recognised at the club’s Christmas Luncheon held at the RSL on Tuesday 10 December. President Ian Yoxall presented each member with a 20-year lapel stick pin and a framed certificate acknowledging the attainment of 20 years club membership. Pictured above are L-R, Life Member and Secretary Keith Hayman, former President Mark Sunter, President Ian Yoxall and Assistant Treasurer Dan Latham.

Great activities for people living with disabilities By Joanne Allison-Schouw
Life with a disability should not stop someone from being active and participating in a variety of enjoyable activities that enable them to thrive and learn more about themselves. Here at Bribie Respite, we provide a full program of semi-structured learning, social support, outdoor activities and other fun activities. Our cooking and shopping classes are popular because they help everyone understand what foods can go together to make a delicious and nutritious meal. They also teach important skills for household management. At our cooking classes, people are also involved in preparing the food and cleaning up. And we even organise for our cooks to go out shopping and buy the ingredients. Our aim is to provide people with the tools and confidence to take good care of themselves, go out and about in their community, make friends and ultimately, get more out of life. We organise regular trips to local community resources including parks, the library, the beach and further afield to the Sunshine Coast. We also organise different types of special interest groups including outdoor pursuits such as fishing and camping. These group activities offer
a host of opportunities and interesting experiences which are both fun and educational. Through these activities, people can enrich and expand their life. It’s important for everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy time away from home and experience a different environment.
Overnight camping in recreational cabins offer new and exciting challenges. These trips enable people to connect with nature, strengthen their capacity to manage in a different environment and develop important new skills which they may not otherwise have the chance to develop. We believe it’s important for people living with disability to have the opportunity to experience different cultural and entertainment events with confidence knowing they have the support they need. These sorts of initiatives build greater independence and provide stimulating and inclusive social and cultural interactions. We are a registered provider with the NDIS.
Looking for a disability school holiday program? Our school holiday program is designed to enable teenagers, from 14 years old onwards, to access and share in a range of social and fun experiences. Our programs help young people build confidence and gain life skills in a warm, community-focused setting. Our varied program of activities includes the following: •
Overnight camps
•
Arts and crafts
•
Day visits to community spaces such as parks, libraries, local attractions and beaches

By Cathy McGillvray
THE ROARING TWENTYS RIDE AGAIN! I’m hoping there might be a few readers who remember the 1920s, when life was about enjoying the peace and happiness after the Great War. Even if you weren’t around then, I’m sure you have seen the movies that show everyone embracing jazz music, new fashions, motion pictures, wireless radios and cars.
Last month I tried to make you realise that if you truly want to make changes to any part of your life you have to stop waiting for tomorrow. So, did you change anything since last month? Did you want to but put it off yet again? Oh, so nothing has changed because you didn’t make a change.
The biggest change of the 1920s was that women, more than men, began challenging the way things were done. Women demanded more freedom, equality and independence. Their fashions changed dramatically, no more whalebone corsets, uncomfortable dresses and hats just to go to shopping! Yes, the 20s rolled in and the hem lines rolled up, and as more leg was exposed silk stockings became the must have fashion accessory.
I also told you about the participants of our 2019 Spring Into Summer 12 week challenge, and here they are, just like I promised, real people who made a real difference to their lives, and those around them.
Even more shocking than stockings was the sight of high-heel shoes, women smoking, drinking and wearing make-up in public, enjoying short hair styles, and swimming in revealing bathing costumes that were so brief you could see knees and arms (Gasp!!). Just to top this all off increasing numbers of women were learning to drive. What was the world coming too!!! I am so very grateful and proud of these women, because without them making these changes, women today would not have the freedom to do whatever we want, whenever we want! These ladies changed their lives and ours. But wait! How exciting! The roaring 20s are about to happen again! In about 10 more sleeps 2020 will arrive and once again we could have the roaring 20s with your chance to make your mark on not just your life but the lives of everyone.
You can see the amazing changes that our winner Peter and runner up Nicola made, but what you can’t see is the fitness changes – like Peter who now can plank for 5mins and complete 60 push ups on his toes in 60 seconds, or Nicola who holds her plank for nearly 3mins. You also can’t see the 47.5kgs lost in total by the 8 participants or how they all felt less stressed, more confident, able to sleep better, laugh louder and were all far stronger than just 12 weeks earlier. Once this decade rolls to a close, and the adverts encouraging you to eat excessive amounts of Christmas food finish, we will be bombarded, at a rate as annoying often as the Bribie Bridge comes to a standstill, with adverts telling us we ate too much and must lose weight. There will also be those ridiculous cringe worthy bikini body challenges. Really Bikini Body? For a start men look ridiculous in bikinis! Why not budgie smuggling challenges or a Firm as a Firemans Butt challenge? But what about the rest of this new decade that’s about to hit us right between the eyes? What’s the point of doing a challenge to then stop and go back to a lifestyle of flabbiness and far
Senior Gentle Dumbbell Arm Exercises Before You Start
Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
TRICEP KICKBACK Use your kitchen bench for support, resting on one arm Hold dumbbell in one hand and tuck your elbow close to your body and keep your upper arm still. Lift weight backwards and hold for the count “one, two” Resist the weight coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many “kickbacks” as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Repeat on other arm
SHOULDER SIDE RAISE Sit in stable chair that allows you to lift your arms out to the side Hold a light dumbbell in each hand Keep your elbow slightly bent Start with your arms by your side then raise your arms up to shoulder height and lower Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Let’s get started!
Strong Arms help you lift things and YOU! With all the exercises below start with the lightest dumbbell and work your way up in weights. You can always increase the number of repetitions you do rather than the weight you are using. The result will be the same! When the exercises work one arm at a time – think about your body, does one arm have better movement than the other? Is one elbow more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your strength. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.
SHOULDER SIDE RAISE
Use a stable chair – Sit up straight. Hold a dumbbell in each hand and turn your hands so that your fingernails are against your leg. Keep your elbow close to your body and don’t move your upper arm Lift dumbbells up towards your shoulders and slowly lower down Repeat slowly, only do as many “curls” as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
SHOULDER FRONT RAISE
Sit in a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Hold a dumbbell in each hand so that the ends touch each other Keeping the ends touching lift the dumbbells up to the front – only to shoulder height Hold for a count of “one and two” If you find it too difficult with a dumbbell in each hand start with just one dumbbell held with both hands. Repeat slowly, only do as many lifts as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Restt

CONGRATULATIONS TO ELLEN ON HER 600TH CLASS
too little fitness? I get to skite here and say that out of the eight participants, seven are continuing to exercise with us after the challenge. This is now their “normal” and they’ve not just changed their lifestyles, but those of their families. Yes, I know 12 weeks is a hunk of your year and we know that lots of stuff can, and will, happen during those 12 weeks. Birthdays, parties, holidays, sick family members, bit’s falling off your body. No! Just joking, I’m checking if you are still awake! Our participants get results because we teach them that even after a week where your whole world is turned upside down you can still carry on. They learn to focus on one week at a time. They are taught that a tough hour, day or week doesn’t mean they give up, it means they are normal. More importantly you don’t starve or run yourself into the ground to “fix” a problem, you should nourish yourself and use exercise as a proven stress release.

12 week challenge winner Peter Evans Ellen Newby participated in her 600th Heartbeats class on Friday the 8th of November and has achieved the most Heartbeats classes attended! Ellen has enjoyed coming along to the classes at least twice a week since they started nearly 8 years ago. Ellen loves to travel in the campervan and enjoys being active with indoor bowls, dancing and her garden, and if she hadn’t been out and about enjoying the campervan she would probably be closer to 700 classes! But that's what happens when you keep active with exercise, you are able to keep active enjoying a fun life. Congratulations Ellen!

U3a Beachmere ends it's first year on a high
Beachmere Community Carols It was one of the hottest days for a while, but Beachmere came out to enjoy a cool breeze in the afternoon shade at the Beachmere Community Carols on Saturday, 7 December.
The Palm Lake Beachmere Songsters led the gathering in the carols with local entertainers Tony and Jan Timms performing everyone’s favourites. Another long time local, Sam Gallagher, sang a trio of carols that brought the event to a standstill. The Dance4Kids Performance team took over the stage and a host of politicians dropped by to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
With activities for the children, and some fun for the “big kids”, great gift and craft stalls, Beachmere kicked off its festive season with a family event that was enjoyed by all.
Ukulele and Singalong classes combined to lead the carols U3A Beachmere finished it’s first year with a huge End of Year Celebration and Award presentation. Santa and Miss Trixie, the fairy elf
The Ukulele classes and the Singalong class combined to lead the more than 80 attendees in carols and songs under the direction of Linda Hoare and Ann Watts.
The inaugural Above and Beyond Award was presented to Robyn Wheeldon, who was voted by her peers as the student or member who has done that little bit extra to support U3A Beachmere and it’s students. “Long Service” Awards were also presented to Tutors who had completed all four terms.

With membership nearing 300, Chair Mary Brown thanked all the tutors, volunteers and committee who had worked tirelessly all year to ensure U3A Beachmere’s success. “Sign On for Term One 2020 has been very strong already, and the office will
open on Thursday, 30 and Friday, 31 January for Sign On again.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back for a new school year from Tuesday, 3 February, with some fabulous classes and workshops. I encourage everyone to get involved and support U3A Beachmere. It’s such an amazing resource for Beachmere.”

CAFE AND TAKEAWAY Donnybrook Bait Tackle & Takeaway
Well what a year it’s been. The “big shopâ€?, Serenity at the Waterways has played host to quite a number of very special birthday parties, family reunions, club breakfast and lunches, training sessions, Board meetings, Chamber dinners. weddings, and funeral wakes. We love our Friday night music and supporting local artists. More recently we have loved hosting the various Christmas parties and did you know we also did the VIP and Volunteer catering for the Abbey Medieval Festival? Then there were countless lunches and dinners. We and the staff love the support we are getting from the locals here on Bribie. If you have an event and would like a chat just give us a call. The “little shopâ€? Serenity CafĂŠ has served up thousands of cups of coffee, breakfasts lunches and many many lovely home baked cakes. Our lovely customers have also enjoyed Morning Melodies which we introduced every Wednesday morning from 10:00am; and we welcome well-known local ladies to host Psychic Mondays, just $20 for coffee cake and a reading. How good is that? We’ve bid farewell to some of our team and welcomed in some new folk. Our lovely staff team have had some highs & lows, celebrating the birth of grandchildren, graduations notable birthdays and the like and then some lows with possibly too many trips to hospital!
We’ve supported local charities and have big plans to further support some of the more vulnerable people in our community, and of course will continue to do all of the above – great food, service with the focus on you, and affordable prices.

20 December, last one for the year, great honest rock and roll.
These boys torn down the house on their last visit here and I expect much of the same. This rock and blues band is great, and Pete has the voice to celebrate the legends of rock and blues show casing the best of Australian, English and American bands.

These three remarkable guys are regular early morning Golfers, playing with a group known as “Dads Army who tee off while most of you are still asleep in bed.
Every Monday and Friday morning, right through the year, a hardy group of more than 30 “Senior golfers gather at Woorim Golf Course in the dawn light to tee off.
Dads Army enthusiasts have been doing this for well over 25 years and are still going strong. “It is so calm and peaceful at that time in the morning, birds are all so active, wildlife is still around, and it is a great way to start the day with good mates, even if we don’t always play so well..

Like so many of the Dads Army players, they all have lived very interesting lives. From left to right they are ‌.
BILL MONAGHAN was a distinguished Air Force Pilot with a long service record, flying almost every type of aircraft in the Australian fleet. He was stationed in Malaysia and was a fighter pilot during the Korean War where he was forced to crash his aircraft on a beach. JOHN RYMAN had a very successful business in Sydney cutting vast quantities of different fabrics and materials for clothing designers and manufacturers. Over the years he cut
Bill Monaghan, John Ryman, and Frank Cottier literally millions of shirts, trousers and tops for well-known fashion houses such as “Country Club, who then had them sewn up into finished garments. FRANK COTTIER ran a major Industrial Engineering supply business based in Canberra. He serviced the needs of various Industries with a wide range of Engineering materials and equipment, primarily to the Mining and Earth moving Industries.
Dads Army players all wear distinctive Yellow shirts and are an impressive site as they head off marching up the first fairway. Left‌.Right‌..Left ‌..Right ‌‌seems to be the general direction of the balls, as they frequently head off in different directions to alternate sides of the fairway‌‌‌ certainly not marching in step !!
However, far more important than still being the good golfers they once were, they are still getting out of bed to enjoy this stimulating early morning exercise with their mates ‌‌.all at 90 years of age. Well done boys.

Waterwise Gardening
Wow, its December already and Christmas day will be here in a couple of weeks and the weather has been true to form once again; hot, dry and not much rainfall for Bribie Island and local districts over the last few months. Although, the storm last week certainly brought with it some heavy rain for about an hour or so, on Bribie island. I remember how excited I was coming home from work and parking the car, then watching it pelt down in the early afternoon. It was like witnessing a tropical monsoon- with 30 to 50 mm of smashing rain- just in that one hour of deluge. It was great to see the plants, lawns and gardens hydrated once again and my empty wheelbarrow had collected quite a few litres- of thatmagic elixir of life, so hope you guys that have rainwater tanks, got a nice top up this time around. On the subject of rains or lack of them recently, it really brings home the importance of trying to set our homes up with more of an emphasis on sustainability, with water tanks plumbed to your roof and having solar panels installed to generate electricity to run pumps off peak-for irrigating our lawns, landscape and house plants or perhaps recycling grey water- if you can. It’s amazing the amount of people on Bribie Island and surrounding districts who have invested in their properties to minimise their energy consumption, conserve their water usage and have become more self-reliant as a result. The only problem we have, no matter how well prepared we are - is if it does not rain, the tanks will not fill, the dams dwindle, and the water table drops from excessive pumping from our aquifers and water restrictions may also be enforced.
Happy New Year!

MICK’S PATCH
by Mick O’Brien
Dip.Hort(MAIH)-RH-101
Landscape Plant of the Month Dietes iridioides -‘White Tiger’. PBR
Dietes iridioides ‘White Tiger’PBR, is an exotic clump- forming rhizomatous perenial with striking variegated, strappy- upright foliage, that produces white iris- like flowers with the traditional yellow throat and mauve markings of the- Dietes grandiflora -in spring. Just like their evergreen cousins, Dietes bicolor and Dietes grandiflora, D. White Tiger- are tough dry- tolerant plants once established in the landscape. These plants grow well in full sun or part shade and are both salt and wind tolerant and grow well in most soil types. The added bonus of- D.‘White Tiger’, is the colour of foliage that features year round which look striking when mass planted in the garden. Also they do not seem to self seed or have the weed potential like their cousins either. I have planted them on Bribie Island and they have an excellent design element when mixed with low, hardy- flowering shrubs that will accentuate their upright foliage. They generally grow to 600 mm high and wide. PBR= ( Plant Breeding Rights), means this cultivar has been registered for all breeding rights- reserved with the owner: PMA- ( Plant Management Australia)
The challenge,
We live on, or around, an island paradise, and we choose to live and be part of this vibrant community- in our subtropical coastal-environment, which tends to lead the way for tropical garden designs which naturally blend with beautiful green swards of lawn and lush landscaping around swimming pools to compliment the whole package. Managing to keep those lovely swards of lawn- green with envy, healthy and hydrated in these drought-like conditions can be quite a challenge. So all our preparations from the planning for the installation of water tanks, water bores and pumps, solar panels and irrigation systems- into the overall design, the more sustainable and prepared we can be when the dry times do arrive. And we may manage to keep our flourishing gardens and lawns in our little piece of paradise alive longer. Of course, when it comes to the crunch and water restrictions are officially implemented locally- which we all hope does not happen, I know some peoplewho will gladly have a 30 secondshower, so they can irrigate their prized
25
garden specimens and help save them from dehydration. Hmmm, who could that be? Well, there is an ocean down the road- and- it is- summer.
Passionately- exhausted Summer is well and truly here, and it has been quite a challenge working outdoors of late with the sudden burst of hot weather this month and also performing 10-hours of hard physical labour each day to complete the jobs at hand which can really test your mettle indeed. At one stage, I recall one of my valued- but cheeky clients having a polite dig at me, as they saw my shirt hanging with excessive sweat, my face dripping also, and as
I try and wipe my sunglasses clearbefore I get back into shovelling more mulch- he chuckled, “ where is that Mr passionate horticulturist now- eh”, to which I replied quick as a flash- “he is passionately seeking another labourerto give me a hand”, and we both laughed out loud. But seriously though, if it wasn’t for the afternoon breeze and the mantra in my head- “keep on going-keep on going” and the dreaming of a holiday, I would have to dig deep to tap into my enthused- passion on this day, especially as another much pile was just being delivered- phew! So this Christmas, I intend to rest up and relax and enjoy the well-earned break, but alas there is work to be done at home, but I will take mysweet time- that’s for sure. • • • • •

Now back home in the patch, it’s been hot and everything
needs irrigating in the dry- of course and the storm season is now upon us, so good to be prepared and any loose mulches like the little confetti- pine bark types- that tend to washaway in the deluge, it will be beneficial if you can at least- put a barrier around those or perhaps a gravel border to keep the job lot in place. Also if you have palm trees it’s a good idea to have the old fronds trimmed as they can cause damage as they can let go and fly loose in the wind. The lawns, if you fertilise or cut them short, you will be irrigating them regularly to keep them looking good and the sharper your lawn mower blades are, the cleaner the cut. - Weed control? Well, they are thriving and flowering despite the lack of regular rainfall, and when using selective herbicides for lawns, they work best when the lawn is not stressed and let’s face it, when have the lawns and plants- not been suffering- of late? So if you can irrigate your sward the day before any intended application of selective herbicides, the better your result of your targeted weed. When applying organic mixtures such as seaweed to your garden or potted plants you will get a better result if you give your plants a drink first- of plain water, then apply the recommended diluted mixture to the soil media or foliage. When plants cells are rehydrated firstly, they then benefit from the natural gibberellins, amino acids and enzymesin the seaweed, which will assist the plants cells to be more resilient and turgid. In regard to applying botanical oils or various white oils, these should only be applied to the plants foliage that are adequately hydrated also, and best to read- all- the fine print- on the label, as some products say, do not spray in temps above 30 degrees or- on stressed plants, so best to apply in the early morning if absolutely needed. So now, as I sit in the aircon- writing this article, my passion has duly returned, and I would like to- passionately
thank you all for your support throughout the year. And I wish you all a truly Safe and Happy Christmas with blessings for a prosperous New Year. See you all then!

AUSTRALIANS
ratios — no political causes resonant more loudly here than the pressure of the hip pocket. Power prices, fuel prices, food prices and clothing prices dominate the daily lives of Australian suburban dwellers. Cost of living issues dominate. These suburban Australians do all this with grace and Cranky Lizard travelled, as part of regular life, to Western Queensland on several occasions in the past few months. While there, and interacting with local business people, farmers, professional medical people, police and ambulance officers, Cranky Lizard experienced a shattering glimpse of the obvious.

Their skills and abilities keep the wheels of Government, statutory bodies, NGO’s, and major corporations turning. In their way, they make a substantial contribution to Australia’s economy. Inner-city life proceeds at a frantic pace -timetables and deadlines dictate events and behaviour – this is neither good nor bad, it is just what it is! enthusiasm; being law-abiding and decent people they absorb much before their hackles become raised. But, and it is a very important but, in a parliamentary democracy such as Australia, if you fire up the majority of suburban Australians through political opportunism or stupidity, you will be hammered mercilessly at the ballot box. Many Australian politicians have discovered that, as they are kicked out of office ‘ on their bums ‘; simply because they took the Australian suburbs for granted.
The sprawling suburbs around Australian cities are where Australia is – it is as simple as that. Located West of the developed suburban arc along our coast, and mentally, totally removed from inner-city living is the Australian ‘ bush ‘. Regional cities, small towns, mining communities and even smaller settlements are
sprinkled over the vast empty landscape. Broadacre farming and the pastoral industry are the twin economic engines which drive the ‘ bush ‘. Mining makes a substantial contribution, but the long term inhabitants are the old farming and grazing families whose fathers and fore-fathers wrenched the land from its natural state; and through stubbornness and an innate ability to make things happen, have been able to create some of the best agricultural products world markets have enjoyed. European settlement of the ‘ bush ‘ brought much sadness and tragedy for the Australian aboriginals who were already living on this country. Anger, cruelty and violence, from both sides, dominated the early days of bush living but it was a one-sided contest and there are unresolved issues which are still being addressed today. Not everyone is happy about the way these issues are being addressed; that is not surprising, and there is much work yet to be done.
Cranky Lizard has no intention of adding to the existing volume of splendid literary works describing life in the ‘ bush ‘; there is already enough of that. Distance between people and settlements and distance from market places dominate daily life in this region of Australia. The relentless isolation generates an attitude of self-reliance which is critical to survival and is the principal difference between urban dwelling and rural living. If you want water, you usually have to sink a bore and find it – hopefully you will be able to drink it! If you want electric light and power, you usually have to generate your own and bear the costs of doing so!
The weather dominates your life, what you can do each day is determined by the weather. And you have no control over the weather – you live or die by accommodating the fickle weather patterns. Do you sow crops this year? Do I move cattle to that area? Fundamental decisions of life-changing potential are made daily and believe me, you have to live with consequences of those decisions – no one can bail you out!
At the beginning of this article, I wrote of the significant differences in the lives of Australians as we live in certain parts of our beautiful country. Those differences, I suggest, are also our strengths for they bind us in common cause. As proof of that I offer the phenomenon of the ‘ hay runner ‘ truck convoys, trucks and diesel given freely, money from urban and city folks given generously to buy the hay and much misery alleviated. Many examples of our common causes exist – you can identify them without the pointing fingers of Cranky Lizard. Christmas approaches, once again the timeless story of birth in ancient lands spins its magic. Family reunions, the giving of gifts and the wonderfully optimistic tale of an old bloke in a sleigh occupies our minds.

ATTENTION: CRANKY LIZARD
Thought this was worth sending on as how true and apt after reading Cranky Lizard last issue in the local paper. Many thanks, Merv. Britton.
Outback
When the shearing sheds are silent, and the stock camps fallen quiet, When the gidgee coals no longer glow across the outback night, And the bush is forced to hang a sign, 'gone broke and won't be back', And spirits fear to find a way beyond the beaten track. When harvesters stand derelict upon the wind-swept plains, And brave hearts pin their hopes no more on chance of loving rains, When a hundred outback settlements are ghost towns overnight, When we've lost the drive and heart we had to once more see us right. When 'Pioneer' means a stereo and 'Digger' some backhoe, And the 'Outback' is behind the house, there's nowhere else to go. And 'Anzac' is a biscuit brand and probably foreign owned, And education really means brainwashed and neatly cloned. When you have to bake a loaf of bread to make a decent crust, And our heritage once enshrined in gold is crumbling to dust, And old folk pay their camping fees on land for which they fought, And fishing is a great escape, this is until you're caught. When you see our kids with Yankee caps and resentment in their eyes, And the soaring crime and hopeless hearts is no longer a surprise, When the name of RM Williams is a yuppie clothing brand, And not a product of our heritage that grew off the land. When offering a hand makes people think you'll amputate, And two dogs meeting in the street is what you call a, 'Mate', When 'Political Correctness' has replaced all common sense, When you're forced to see it their way, there's no sitting on the fence. Yes, one day you might find yourself an outcast in this land. Perhaps your heart will tell you then, 'I should have made a stand'. Just go and ask the farmers that should remove all doubt, Then join the swelling ranks who say, 'Don't sell Australia out!'
Cranky Lizard believes in the spirit of Christmas as a Christian festival and, sometimes, maybe just maybe, hears the distant tinkling of sleigh bells in the calm quiet nights of the Australian ‘ bush.’ May you all enjoy a happy and peaceful Christmas surrounded by your families and those who are close to your heart. Enjoy your days.

Bribie the “Toast of Toastmasters”
From left to right: Anne Iverson (3rd Place Humorous Contest) – Rosine Evans (1st Place Table Topics) – Joannes Evers (1st Place International) Speech contests are a Toastmasters tradition. Each year, thousands of Toastmasters compete in the Humorous, Evaluation, Table Topics and International speech contest categories. Competition begins with club contests and the winners continue competing throughout the area, division and district for a chance to perform their skills on stage in the hope to win the World Championship of Public Speaking®
The latest interclub area competition for Toastmasters, in Narangba, has seen the Bribie Island Toastmasters come out on top. Anne Iverson competed in the Humorous contest; Contestants present a humorous speech that must be thematic in nature (opening, body and close), not a monologue (series of oneliners).

Anne was awarded 3rd place for a her humorous interpretation of her wedding day. Her speech “What a day” got the crowd laughing from start to finish.
Rosine Evans competed in the Table Topics contest; Table Topics® is a long-standing Toastmasters tradition intended to help members develop their ability to organize their thoughts, quickly and respond to an impromptu question or topic. The Table Topic at the contest was “Somewhere there is...” Rosine didn't think twice before she replied “a man for me”. Rosine then revealed that she has actually been married for 50+ years. She then 'complained' about her (current) husband Peter who has transitioned into a far too healthy lifestyle for Rosine's liking. She still hopes and believes somewhere there is “a real good man” for her. A razor sharp funny impromptu story that awarded her a well deserved 1st place. Joannes Evers competed in the International Speech Contest where contestants present a five to seven minute speech on any subject of their choice.

Joannes's speech dissected the worrying mentality of our planet, mainly covering Australia. According to Joannes, the root cause of our worries can be found in how we communicate with ourselves, others and the universe. His suggestion to substitute our beloved phrase “No worries mate” with “Hakuna Matata” was very well received and awarded him 1st place.

Terry Young MP calls for government and Longman Community to put their weight behind PCYC Caboolture ?
greatly needed so that PCYC Caboolture could continue to support families and kids in the Longman community. “Since 1990, PCYC Caboolture has gone above and beyond to build a safer and healthier community through sports and recreation activities, and important youth development and community programs,” Mr Young said.
“We want PCYC Caboolture to continue this important work and to do this; they need a bigger and better facility. They have outgrown the space they’ve got and they are bursting at the seams, so this facility is greatly needed. “Plus a more centralised area will give PCYC Caboolture greater access to facilities, transport and more importantly young people and the community, right next to the new stateof-the-art Caboolture Police Station.” Mr Young said everyone must work together to make the new PCYC Caboolture facility a reality.
Terry Young MP with PCYC Caboolture Branch Manager Sergeant Ashley Freyling Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP will take the fight for a new facility for PCYC Caboolture to Canberra as he implores the Federal, Local and State governments to get behind the much-needed project.
Mr Young has started an e-petition on his Facebook page, urging the Longman community to voice their support for a new PCYC building in the heart of Caboolture. The PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club) Caboolture building on Toovey Street was built 30 years ago; however the PCYC has fast outgrown the space with the facility becoming very aged.
The club offers a range of low-cost activities for all age groups starting from toddlers to seniors, with the gymnastics program run by a team of qualified coaches. Youth and community programs are a key part of PCYC Caboolture, with Braking the Cycle and RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself) on offer to the entire Longman community.
Today, PCYC Caboolture supports more than 1,000 members through gymnastics, a popular boxing program which is now at full capacity and other activities and programs. Mr Young said the new facility was
“I’m imploring the Federal Government, the State Government and the Local Government to get behind this project because not one Government can fund this whole thing; we’re talking about $13 million dollars. “I’m also encouraging the Caboolture community and all of Longman to get behind this project, so that we can make this facility possible and create a cohesive and connected community.”
PCYC Caboolture Branch Manager Sergeant Ashley Freyling said he was excited about the prospect of a new club being built in the centre of Caboolture. “A new facility would allow us to increase the number of activities, programs and services we offer to greater impact young peoples’ lives and out local community,” Sergeant Freyling said.
Terry Young MP, calls on state government to put federal money where their mouth is and upgrade Bribie Island road intersection
Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP has called on the State Government to get a move on when it comes to upgrading the intersection of Bribie Island and Old Toorbul Point Roads. In July, Mr Young met with State Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP and State LNP leader Deb Frecklington at the notorious intersection to discuss the $20 million of federal funding that had been invested into upgrading Bribie Island Road. Mr Young said that the Longman community could no longer wait for the Old Toorbul Point Road intersection to be upgraded. “We are talking about people’s lives here. Tens of thousands of people use the Bribie Island Road daily. There can be no excuse for neglecting intersections like Old Toorbul Point Road any longer, the money’s there and the State Government needs to get cracking,” Mr Young said. “The Morrison Government reconfirmed our commitment to upgrading Bribie Island Road when we announced $20 million of funding for vital safety improvements in this year’s federal budget,” said Mr Young. “The money is there, why don’t the State Government use it?”
As we enter 2020 The Local Island and Surrounds News will continue to follow up on the progress of these road upgrades.

Merry Christmas!
By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings. [Please Note 1: This story serves to remind us all, that in times of bushfires, drought and changing expectations; life in the bush goes on, and on – just because there is no other way to do it.] [ Please Note 2: It is not a good idea, nor is it recommended by the Author, for anyone to try and produce the Christmas Pudding Sauce recipe contained in this tale. The recipe sort of works, but has the curious effect of rendering the pudding irrelevant!! ] [ Please Note 3: This is a repeat article – it has been published before. It is, however, still very relevant, and, will happen, or something like it, will happen this Christmas.] What follows is a story about how some things are, in the Australian Bush, at Christmas time. The place is irrelevant. The time is apparent, and the location could be anywhere in that beautiful, vast, heartbreaking place, The Outback. And, as in many cases, the story has its genesis in the events surrounding the people who live in remote places and know the meaning of loneliness and how to deal with it !! This particular tale kicked off in the late 1950s and carried on until 2018… and it is still happening? Apart from the cattle and sheep stations, which surround local, regional communities, the populations of such communities begin to drain away in the weeks before Christmas, as most of the workers in the towns head ‘ home’ for Christmas. It has always been like this, although with the arrival of social media and the internet, some of this human drainage has slowed, but not stopped. Remaining in the towns, are those persons who are considered necessary for the continuing function of the vital community services needed to keep the town up and running, if you know what I mean? They were known as the “ Christmas Orphans “. These people were the nurses, maybe one doctor, a couple of bank johnnies, a copper or two and usually one of the two town diesel mechanics – to make sure the diesel generators kept the lights on and the fridges cold. But it was always lonely for this mob because they were on their own. Their families were days away by road; the local Pub, good as they were, were still pubs. Nurses quarters and coppers barracks were empty spaces when only one or two people lived in them, and the bank johnnies, well – they had local bank houses which were OK during the typical year but became pretty ordinary when the Christmas drainage began. One of the Governesses, at one of the closest cattle stations to town, about 50 km., away to the West of the town, had a flash of brilliance one morning while making up some extra beds for ringers who had nowhere to go over Christmas – “ Why not invite the Christmas Orphans to come out for Christmas ? “. The owners were all for it, there was plenty of space on the big, wide verandahs, characteristic of all station homesteads in that country – there was plenty of tucker, and 50 km was nothing as far as distance was concerned. From such things, traditions are created. So, a couple of weeks before the Christmas Drain began, the word was spread around the town, the pubs, the banks, the local cricket club, the police station, the railway station etc. ; Christmas Orphans,

could come to the station after lunch on Christmas Eve and stay until Boxing Day. Just bring yourself, or a small something if you wished, everything else was already there, beds, showers, tucker and good company. Not much else was needed anyway !! There weren’t many Christmas Orphans, two young coppers, three nurses, three and a half bank johnnies, one was on probation, one black hander [ the diesel mechanic ] and four spare ringers – it was too far and too hot for their old Toyota to make it safely back to Longreach in Queensland and then back to the station. The town mob, the coppers, nurses and bank johnnies rocked up in two Land Rovers, one of which had “ Bush Nurse “ painted on the side. Marilyn was allowed to bring it out to the station because she was the Bush Nurse anyway, it was her vehicle, and she had all her ‘ stuff ‘ in it, besides she could take it anywhere if there was an emergency. And the other one was the spare Police wagon, with a radio, in case it was needed back in town or at a crash !! Willy, who was ‘ half ‘ the bank johnny, the one on probation, brought his mouth organ – Nancy, the governess whose idea it was in the first place, had a violin, which she could play the hell out of – and one of the coppers had a hidden talent; he could make a guitar sing. Wilson, the black hander, brought his own Ford 250 with the best sounding V8 for hundreds of kilometres around…he also had enough tools and welders on it to build a truck, if he had to? The Hardchambers, the mob who owned the station, had been convinced by Nancy, their governess, that no one should be lonely or without a place to go at Christmas. And that was the reason why the ‘ Orphans ‘ were camping on their verandah and working out with Gretel Hardchamber how they were going to cook the turkeys, set up the tables, bag the puddings and generally help around the place for Christmas. The Christmas turkeys had spent the last two months eating corn behind the house chook yard. All the vegetables would come from the station homestead garden, well

Gretel’s Mother, Hannah, had made the puddings, as she said “ I have been making the bloody things for forty years, a few more won’t hurt. “ They were her mixture of suet, fruit, rum, flour and some other stuff, as heavy as your average chair, but they were bloody good to eat !! Annabel, one of the nurses, had her recipe for the sauce for the Christmas puddings, and she had a practice run in the kitchen on Christmas Eve…condensed milk, warm water, Milo, a solid splosh of rum and a pinch of flour seemed to do the job. Gretel, Hannah and Annabel had a severe tasting session, which resulted in all of them laughing their faces off at absolutely nothing. Tricky !!
The youngest of the two coppers, the one who could not play the guitar, had the job of lopping the heads off the three turkeys, dressing them and heaving the insides over behind the engine shed for the dingoes… who would appreciate this gesture, because they had been looking at the turkeys for quite some time – wondering how they could get them. Christmas Eve on the verandah of the station was as you would expect. Ringers in clean, shirts and jeans with wet hair plastered down; coppers and nurses relaxed lying back on the camp beds, although Annabel caught a couple of glances from the youngest copper, and, gave them back !! The proper bank johnnies tried the ‘ Singing Minstrel ‘ episode, accompanied by Nancy, who had her violin begging for more and the ‘ half ‘ bank johnny had his mouth organ sounding like Larry Adler! All of these people were a part of a much more significant and stronger story: the story of the Australian Outback and what you do and how you live when you are in its arms. Because it does hold you, it places a small fire in your heart and no matter what you do, you cannot put that fire out…the spark leaves you when your spirit leaves you… only to join all the other sparkling souls floating about in the Outback, looking out for each other and the people who live there. You can hear these sparkling spirits in the cry of the black cockatoo, the howl of the dingoes and soft, susurrations of the desert winds in the she-oaks on the lonely ridges of hard stone – a sound once heard never forgotten. Marriages came from these first Christmas Orphan verandahs and children came from those marriages, and they, in their turn, in the cycle of life had their children. I know of a verandah that has stories and memories…I am in those stories !! I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas; may it be a time of generosity and goodwill towards all your fellow Australians.

Terry Young MP calls for funding to light up Sandstone Point community and sports complex Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP says he will fight for $242,000 in Federal funding to get lights installed at the oval at the Sandstone Point Community and Sport Complex. Lighting up the oval at the Sandstone Point complex will allow more local sporting and community organisations to utilise the oval afterhours.
Mr Young has called on the community
of Longman to rally behind the fight for funding for the Sandstone Point Community and Sport Complex, with an e-petition to be made available on Mr Young’s Facebook page. Mr Young said organisations like the Bribie District Little Athletics, who already utilise the oval, would benefit from the installation of lights at the oval. “It’s important to ensure that people who use the oval after hours are given a safe and secure location to hold organisation activities and sessions,” Mr Young said. “By installing the lights at the oval, we will be able provide oval users with that comfort and any family members.”

TIDE TIMES 2020
December Fishing Report
The summer fishing season is definitely under way, with air and water temperatures on the rise. This past month has seen consistent daily maximums in the high 20s/low30s, which has been about 3 degrees above last month’s average. Water temperatures have also increased about 3 degrees over the past 6 weeks, in the Passage. Local winds have also been steady for weeks; almost always from the north and blowing more than 15knots every afternoon, keeping water clarity low. We’ve just had the driest November on record. Apart from the thunderstorm on November 17 and the rain just last week, most of the weather has passed north or south of us. All of this points to the sort of consistent weather that makes fish more inclined to be tempted by your bait or lure, which has certainly been the case over the past month. Changeable weather means erratic barometric pressure, which affects the swim bladders of fish, especially those with larger swim bladders, like bream and snapper, sweetlip too. With stable weather, fish feel more comfortable and more interested in feeding. It goes a long way to explain why there’s been such a fantastic run of bream and sweetlip in the Passage. Even the snapper have held on in good sizes. Darcy found some good-sized fish near Shag Island, 3 big bream among them, using prawns for bait. On a windy day, Nick and Chris drifted north of the bridge, past Bellara; it was a messy sort of day but still good for catching bream and sweetlip. North of the bridge was also the right place for Damon and Luke, with bream, sweetlip and a snapper, just shy of legal size. It was a fast tide, which is not always a bad thing, and the fish were caught using just regular jig lures. There are still cod to be found around Bongaree jetty, and around other structures or rocky areas of the Passage. Mullet fillets have worked well to catch them. Most of the cod we have heard about have been tossed back in, including Luke’s cod, 49cm, which was caught at the jetty. Flathead went quiet last month, but some really good catches have come in recently. Troy says he didn’t have to go far for his 69cm beauty, sitting just north of Spinnaker Sound Marina. Also try the north end of White Patch - prawns have been doing the trick there. Further out, mackerel have been plentiful. Richard and his mates had a great day, saying “If you couldn’t catch a mackerel, you must have forgotten to take your rod.” With 15 mackerel, 2.5kg plus, snapper about 3.2kg and sweetlip at 2.5kg, it was a good day for them all. Early morning starts are good for mackerel; a jig and pilchards favoured for bait. As we go further into summer, the good fishing should continue, but the storms will change the feeding behaviour of the fish in the Passage. A keen fisher should change their strategy accordingly. We’ll go into that next month. Fishability Qld held its end-of-year Community Fish-off at Bongaree jetty at the start of the month, with trophies handed out to the 2019 winners. Thanks to Simone Wilson, who came along to support this great program, which offers friendly, accessible fishing outings to people who don’t often have such opportunities.

NEW BRIBIE BRIDGE Community Reference Committee
SimoneWilsonMP

I am thrilled to announce the formation of the ‘New Bribie Bridge Community Reference Committee’ (NBBCRC) which held its first meeting last week.
Thank you Pumicestone
NBBCRC will provide a vital voice in advocating for the needs of our community with all levels of Government and their focus will be squarely on ensuring our needs for a New Bribie Bridge are heard.
Thank you to the wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly and contribute so much to keeping our community connected and thriving. I have so much respect, you each make Pumicestone a better place!
It’s reassuring to see this group of dedicated community members take on the tasks ahead with such vigour. I look forward to working with and alongside them as we continue the lobby for a New Bribie Bridge now, not in 15 years’ time.
Helping groups with grant applications is another very satisfying part of my role and I was pleased to assist many of our not-for-profit groups obtain some funding in this year’s rounds for special projects.
It has been a privilege and a great pleasure to support our wonderful Pumicestone groups and organisations throughout 2019.
My gift baskets have been a real hit and this year alone over 230 hampers have helped groups raise funds for various endeavours.
My office staff worked hard to assist groups with photocopying and folding services, with just over 75,000 pages provided to NHWs, social groups and service clubs in the electorate.
Support Our Drought Affected Communities As 2019 comes to an end, I am sure the entire Pumicestone Electorate joins me in thoughts to those who continue to be affected by drought. For so many, the harrowing plight of drought affected communicates is too tough to bear. I was pleased to donate to Drought Angels on behalf of the Pumicestone community where every dollar given helps our farmers on the land, supports their families and their community’s wellbeing. If you too want to donate, visit www.droughtangels.org.au and click on the donation link. As Australians, we are always at our best when we support each other through hardships and the extreme challenges we face.
Out & About in Pumicestone
The Pumicestone Electorate Office will be closed for the Christmas/New Year break from Monday, 23 December 2019 to Friday, 10 January 2020
