Welcome to issue 43, first off I would like to apologise to Michael Bain owner of Bongaree Bakery and Woorim Bakery for the mistake in issue 42 with the close encounters story. In this issue we have the article from Rosie McKenry “Does Protest Still Work” It will be her final article for a while, and the Team at the LOCAL would like to thank Rosie for her contribution to the LOCAL with her wonderful articles. Dear Editor Humans, as sentient beings able to express our thoughts to others, have always asked why we are here. But, as science has shown, it is conceit to think that humans are special. Like all other forms of life, our only purpose is to perpetuate our species.

Unfortunately humans are very good at that, and the resultant overcrowding has resulted in nature's response of increasing the numbers with homosexual identity, so that reproduction reduces.

If Prometheus was right, monarchy, socialism, and democracy are all equally effective at producing people without respect, who are crazy with greed, resulting in war. Perhaps that is the natural way in which human populations should be kept in control. That would explain why we need to treat past wars with such reverence.

Democracy is better than the others, in that it allows for a greater variety of ways to achieve the same result. But until and unless humanity learns to respect nature, the future is bleak.

From time to time the your paper highlights how blessed we are to have such wonderful recreation areas around our island.

In October every year, I am one of some 13,000 reported permit holders that are entitled, as long as we behave ourselves, to have access to Woorim Beach using a 4WD vehicle.

However, I am having a great deal of trouble in ascertaining the body that is responsible for maintaining safe access to the beach via the ‘road and ramp’ at the northern end of North Street adjacent to the DPI Aquaculture centre.

These days there are many RVs – apart from the ‘monster utes’ etc – that are designed to make use of such a facility.

Unfortunately, with the weather we have been experiencing recently, access is becoming increasingly difficult, and, because of the inconsiderate attitude displayed by some other drivers, more dangerous.

Could someone please let us know what it is that we get for our annual fee of $154.60? Are we entitled to have the access to Ocean Beach bulldozed a few times each year? Could the surface be supplemented with other appropriate material to give the sand more traction?

Out of an income of, say, 2.0098 MILLION DOLLAR$, surely the authorities can afford to engage a contractor to assist? I’m sure I could arrange a posse of permit holders to shout the driver a barbecue and cold drink at the beach on the day that the service is provided.

We seem to be in a vicious circle between Producers of goods and greedy Shopping retailers.

Amount and size of products are regularly being downsized or reduced and at the same time cost of the item is being increased.

It seems the ACCC is not interested having someone held accountable, is it any wonder that this is not being JUSTIFIED, yes perhaps less but why the price increases?

It is time that they become accountable for this less for more situation.

I think consumers have been ripped off for far too long, smaller amounts (perhaps) but not a price increase as well.

We are being taken for CHUMPS, the sooner the international companies come over to Australia and break this cycle of greed the better.

The price of Milk is an example of the greed, it has gone up supposedly to help the Farmers but as was shown on TV recently they receive very little from the price increase.

I say boycott those retailers who are ripping us off, shop around, query the price and leave it in the store if dissatisfied with the answer.

We should query all prices that have been hiked up with no justification or that which is not fair.

Shoppers want a fair go?

Federal member for longman concerned by treatment of racehorses

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP says he has been left concerned by confronting video evidence showing the mistreatment of former racing and harness horses at an abattoir in Queensland.

Mr Young said ensuring the welfare of all animals is something the Morrison Government takes very seriously.

“I can certainly understand why many people are finding this footage extremely upsetting and disturbing.

The state and territory governments are responsible for animal welfare in their jurisdictions and I urge the Queensland authorities to investigate this matter. I know that the Morrison Government is in contact with the states regarding this matter,” Mr Young said.

Mr Young said he will also be urging the Department of Agriculture to make contact with the states to give him confidence that the rules are being applied.

“Racing industry bodies have rules or policies to minimise the number of unwanted horses or to rehome them at the end of their racing career,” he said.

“It is important that these rules are enforced and that industry participants respect these animals and the law.”

In September 2017, Allan Whelan (Al) and his wife Louise Trethowan (Lou) packed up their lives in the UK and moved back to Australia to begin the search for new business opportunities following 20 years in the corporate work environment. This included the recent and successful running of their UK Restaurant, Bingley's Bistro on High St, Poole, a historic township located approximately 2 hours south west of London adjacent to the English Channel. Both Al and Lou had long and distinguished careers in the corporate and public service environments respectfully. As Lou said, “The move back to Australia was driven mainly by the need to reunite with family coupled with the potential negative implications of a UK Brexit resolution which posed risks to our business and livelihood in the UK,” she said.

It was only two months after arriving back in Australia that Al and Lou purchased Serenity Café on Bribie Island and just 12 months later that they rebranded and launched the restaurant, Serenity on the Waterways – the restaurant with one of the best views on Bribie Island positioned above the Bribie Island Waterways Motel at Bongaree.

“Whether you go to buy petrol, groceries or whatever, it should be a pleasant experience and if it’s not a pleasant experience…something in your business is wrong.” Al I had the pleasure of spending a day on Bribie Island to see first-hand how this dynamic duo manage their two business and learn a little more about why Bribie Island is their forever home.

I was joined at Serenity Café by Al and Lou and began the day with a classic Egg and Bacon Muffin with a latte simple food packed with flavor and great coffee. Allan took my order and upsold the cheese with my Egg and bacon Muffin. As you will see later, Al also welcomed me to the restaurant for dinner some 8 hours later where I was able to experience the yummy food at Serenity on the Waterways.

On a more intimate note, Al and Lou are childhood sweethearts having reconnected and remarried almost 20 years ago this year. They have a typical Brady Bunch Family comprising 5 grown up children – 3 girls and two boys who live predominately on the north side of Brisbane. Like many families, they have faced adversity through Lou’s struggle with Multiple Sclerosis and an older son suffering from Asperger’s.

As Lou said, “Life dishes out many challenges - you have to make the most of your life and help others on their journey wherever possible. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to undergo a Stem Cell Transplant in the UK (2016) in an attempt to prevent my Multiple Sclerosis from turning me into a paraplegic.

These procedures are high risk and very challenging but here we are today with our Café Office overlooking the beautiful Bribie Island Passage – I guess this is “It’s our local community that keeps us alive – If we support the locals…. they support us.” Lou part of why we care so much for other people and our community.”

Al and Lou have a passion for food and creating great experiences. Al said, “While my dad was a chef and I grew up understanding food, Lou is the creator and cook for all those homemade sweets at Serenity Café. Lou had owned a restaurant many years ago before children came along, so taking the plunge into the Restaurant World, firstly in the UK, was a natural progression. In the UK, Trip Advisor is the reference point for assessing restaurants and we were able to take Bingley's Bistro from No. 10 to No. 2 - we were full all the time,” he said.

very appealing.

For entrée I ordered the Tempura King prawns in bubbly tempura batter served with salad garnish & sweet chili dipping sauce ($13) and for main I could not go past the Classic Fish Pie which is a traditional fish pie with smoked fish, salmon, prawns and scallop topped with creamy mash - served with seasonal vegetables ($22) - It was yummy – yes I would order it again – the value for money is terrific.

The venue has a very large deck entertainment space with exceptional views across the passage and a private event room for weddings, corporate meetings and other celebrations – this is probably one of the best location and view across the passage anywhere on Bribie Island. Serenity on the Waterways provides exceptional value and is a hidden gem in the region – if you’re a local, get down and sample the menu over a glass of vino on the deck.

Without exception, every person that I have interviewed in the Close Encounters Stories have exhibited unique and genuine qualities. Al and Lou are no different – they care about people, family and community and have an enormous appetite for making things happen. They are as engaging as they are focused on growing their businesses and strengthening community relationships. It was a pleasure to meet Al and Lou and the Serenity Team.

Before I left Serenity Café, I ordered a takeaway classic lemon slice latte – delicious.

Q&A Serenity Café – Sharon, Allan, Louise, Crystal Island in such a short space of time, however we believe that our Restaurant, ‘Serenity on the Waterways’ should be the ‘go to’ boutique place for everything dining, meetings, weddings and general celebrations.”

The Serenity Brand employs 10 local staff who are treated as family by Al and Lou. Lou said, “We enjoy supporting our community in as many ways as possible especially through jobs and helping nurture our staff. We also love to support our community by providing vouchers and catering for special “Life dishes out many challenges you have to make the most of your life and help others on their journey wherever possible.” Lou causes. I was able to bake and donate almost 250 cakes and muffins to give away for the recent Hairdressers with Hearts launch on Bribie Island.”

When the topic moved from business to community, Al and Lou became very animated and excited. They have experienced what a community means in different parts of the world and are positively reflective when they recall the UK Community Environment. Al said, “The UK is known for its’ Pub Culture. If you enter a pub as a local, you will be welcomed as a regular and if you are new to the community, you will be introduced as a new member of the community to everyone – we experienced this first-hand.”

Lou said, “Bribie is a very embracing community - we felt welcome to Bribie as soon as we arrived. These days, we have people come into the café looking to buy new houses and asking directions – these are people passing through like we did looking to see where the best part of Bribie is located. We see a lot of new people coming into the café and restaurant. The locals are terrific – we

After I met Al and Lou at Serenity Café in the morning, I decided to take a rest in preparation for my dinner experience at Serenity on the Waterways. I decided to head to the restaurant at 3.30pm to see what goes on between lunch and dinner. In typical hospitality culture, there was Al, Lou and the Restaurant Manager, Toni setting for a wedding celebration. They were preparing the Event Room early before a Saturday wedding -There is no rest in this industry.

When I returned for dinner, Al was there again welcoming me to the restaurant - the restaurant is styled as a modern dining experience with a very diverse and agreeable menu selection topped with white tablecloths. The decor is warm and the walls share space with numerous ‘for sale’ artworks – it is “I ordered the Classic Fish pie which is a traditional fish pie with smoked fish, salmon, prawns and scallop topped with creamy mash.

What are the ingredients for running a successful business?

Wow, wish we knew. Like many we are still learning but meeting customer expectations has to be up there; mixed up with a wonderful staff team, coffee of course and a real passion for working in this industry (good food, good prices and happy customers help). It’s all about making pleasant experiences for people – like Richard Branson says, “If you look after your people, they will look after you.”

How can the local community help you grow your restaurant?

All we ask is that our locals support us as well as other places. We provide a beautiful setting for events, dinner, wedding, corporate meeting/ conferences – we do this really well and wish more people would call us for a chat about their upcoming celebration – we provide great value to our community.

What makes your business unique and stand out from others?

Louise and I love what we do and I think that is lived out in the food we serve and the coffee we make. Made with love (and pride). Our staff get that, and I think our customers appreciate that too What is your classic menu item from each of your venues?

The café's big breakfast and little breakfast (bacon and egg muffin) are a stand outs, but Louise's lemon drizzle cakes are delicious. The restaurant's signature dishes are the one we brought in from our previous restaurant and are very well regarded by our customers; being our home made pate, our home made fish pie and our pork belly.

How do you maintain a healthy family relationship while running multiple businesses?

That's hard at the moment but we visit our kids when we can and they take time to come to Bribie too (which often involves them helping which is nice and very much appreciated).

improve and how would you go about the change?

Wow and thank you, we now feel like we have won Miss World! It would be nice if people and governments were kind to each other, see and appreciate the differences and rather than invoke conflict embrace diversity. Far too deep, red wine and more time needed for this question!

What do you do during your down time – time away from the business?

Louise is an avid reader and I like fishing and golf but together we really like country drives sometimes for no reason, sometimes to see friends or relatives sometimes to share an ice cream near the beach.

If you were gifted $40k to take a twoweek holiday – where would you go?

There are still so many places in Europe we would love to see but two weeks! A two-week cruise in a luxury apartment on the QMII would be the go.

What is your all-time favorite movie?

Louise - Love Actually. Al - Aliens and Guns, so maybe a star trek or Star Wars movie? We saw the Queen movie at the local flicks, and both very much liked

that!

What is your all-time favorite piece of music?

Louise, without a doubt is David Bowie and Heroes and for me one of Elton John's songs, Your song or Candle in the Wind or Neil Diamond's Porcupine Pie?

Does protest still work? wondered how more could squeeze into that space.

It is significant that 30-40 thousand people protested in Brisbane that daynot as many as Melbourne, but big for a city the size of Brizzy.

There will be more protests. I hope today’s young activists can manage to retain their motivation and hope. Life for them is hard. Getting jobs, finding affordable accommodation—with little hope of buying a house—and mental health challenges are realities for many.

September 20th, 2019 was a day I will remember. It started while I waited for a train to take me from Caboolture Station into Brisbane for the world-wide Climate Emergency protest led by high school students. I decided to join them because I believe we oldies need to give them support. They are so fearful of the future that we are leaving to them.

On the station I saw other older people wearing protesting t-shirts. During the train trip one woman came to sit with me so we got to know each other. I already felt among friends.

In Brisbane I bought The Big Issue and had a very enjoyable conversation with the seller. One thing he said sticks in my mind, ‘I used to like listening to a long-time ‘identity’ on radio until he said he’d be dead before climate change happened, so he wasn’t concerned.’ Or words to that effect.

The magazine’s theme was a question: Does protest still work? There were such good articles in it that I wanted to buy enough copies to give to all the young adults in my life.

Despite the urgency to the protest’s message and despite the seriousness, I did have a gratifying day. Why? Because I saw so many young people holding placards with messages that can’t be ignored, and who are genuinely passionate about what they are telling us. What I saw was the opposite to complacency. I also released that many of the protesters were older people like myself and that there was a feeling of unity between the age groups. Some young parents had babies and toddlers with them. I was encouraged by their presence. It wasn’t hard to guess their reason for being there.

I thought of other cities and towns in Australia where people gathered to shout their message of concern to the world. And in other countries. It was estimated that world-wide 7.6 million people took to the streets the day.

I had the feeling that we all belonged to one family- a family of several generations. This became even more evident when I foolishly used my phone to take a video. I tripped on a kerb and fell face down. A crowd surrounded me.

A new online course has been launched to help Queensland parents teach their kids how to drive.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the PrepL Supervisor Course had been launched after the success of PrepL, the new online learning and assessment program for learners.

"Learner drivers are like sponges. They are rapidly absorbing information about driving,” Mr Bailey said.

“The PrepL Supervisor Course includes a 30-question quiz for users to test their road rules knowledge.

“Based on their results, the course provides tailored road rule information to address any gaps.

“We recognise teaching a learner driver is a tough job and this course will make it a more rewarding experience for learners and their supervisors.

Mr Bailey said the course would also help supervisors deal with stressful situations.

“The course includes specialist guides and lesson plans for supervisors, which start with the basics and progress to more complex situations,” he said.

“Too much stress during a driving session is not a good outcome and the course includes information to help supervisors communicate effectively with their learner.

"Being a safe driver is a lifelong commitment. As a supervisor, your commitment to safe driving and the positive influence you can have will be something they can carry with them throughout their driving life.”

The course was developed in consultation with the driver trainer industry and road safety experts.

The PrepL Supervisor Course is now available from the QGov website at www. qld.gov.au/PrepLSupervisor The course costs $15.25 for 12-month access.

Nutrition, Digestion and Breakfast

Breakfast- is literally the breaking of the fast you have had overnight, which is a time for rest and rejuvenation of the digestive system. Breakfast is a great way to start the day with foods to nourish us, give us energy and fuel for our bodies and brains for the day ahead.

So we all now know that the star ratings on sugar and additive laden breakfast cereals are nothing to go by as to their nutritional value. We know that there is no nutritional value in white bread toast, with a sugary spread. Eating these types of breakfasts that are high in sugar and in carbs give us a quick spike of blood sugar, which then in turn results in a huge slump in energy by mid morning. Indulging in a sweet treat for morning tea with biscuits, or pastries has the same effect resulting in an up down up down pattern of blood sugar spikes and slumps throughout the day.

Continuing this pattern can contribute to an impaired insulin response, and to further stress on the liver, leaving us tired, lethargic and unmotivated.

Foods in nature are amazingly packaged to deliver the goodness of the food in its ultimate form. Wholefoods are just that.

A whole complete food in its entirety.

Once we start pulling bits out, stripping it down and separating components, the goodness is often impaired and becomes not as nutritious as in its natural state.

Consider juicing. To put simply when you juice a fruit for example you are taking away the fibre and concentrating the sugar. Fibre is a super important part of the fruit, and a very important role it has is it slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream. Bought juices have a sugar content comparable to soft drinks.

Digestion is a process that starts before we eat. Looking at food, and thinking about food, initiates the production of saliva. Suggestions for healthier alternatives to cereal and milk are overnight oats, with a combination of nuts and seeds, bircher muesli, chia pudding. If you love your toast for breakky, a healthy option would be fermented organic sour dough. Top with a good quality almond or cashew spread, eggs, or avocado.

When we consider our breakfast options, often they are influenced by our faced paced busy lifestyle, and eating on the go is common. When we are busy and stressed our body is not in digestion mode and therefore indigestion, and lack of absorption of nutrients from our food can occur. Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Ernie-James continued his education in prosthetic dentistry and completed a Master of Dental Prosthetics in 2013, where he was awarded, The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Clinical Award. Great Activities for People Living with Disabilities

Life with a disability should not stop someone from being active and participating in a variety of enjoyable activities that enable them to thrive and learn more about themselves.

Here at Bribie Respite, we provide a full program of semi-structured learning, social support, outdoor activities and other fun trips.

Our cooking classes are popular because they help everyone understand what foods can go together to make a delicious and nutritious meal. They also teach important skills for household management. At our cooking classes, people are also involved in preparing the food and cleaning up. And we even organise for our cooks to go out shopping and buy the ingredients.

Our aim is to provide people with the tools and confidence to take good care of themselves, go out and about in their community, make friends and ultimately, get more out of life.

We organise regular trips to local community resources including parks, the library, the beach and further afield to the Sunshine Coast. We also organise different types of special interest groups including outdoor pursuits such as fishing and camping. These group activities offer a host of opportunities

and interesting experiences which are both fun and educational.

Through these activities, people can enrich and expand their life. It’s important for everyone to have the opportunity to enjoy time away from home and experience a different environment.

Overnight camping in recreational cabins offers new and exciting challenges. These trips enable people to connect with nature, strengthen their environmental awareness and develop important new skills which they may not otherwise have the chance to develop.

We believe it’s important for people living with disability to have the opportunity to experience different cultural and entertainment events with confidence knowing they have the support they need. These sorts of initiatives build greater independence and provide stimulating and inclusive social and cultural interactions.

CHOOSING YOUR WEAPONS…

The war against your wobble, a battle with your bulge, your crusade against cellulite, a fracas with frumpiness or an attack to defeat your droopy bits, if you want to win any of these fights you need to plan your campaign and have the right ammunition at hand.

One day you’re trim and tight, the next you’re in the shower watching your finger disappears into the wobbly bits as you poke at your belly and thighs. What happened? Where did this flab come from? It couldn’t possibly be because you haven’t walked further than from the closest car park to the supermarket

in the last 10 years or that you spend every night “enjoying” a wine (or 4) that seem to have gone from a relaxing drink to “Wow, I can’t not drink”.

Enough! Todays the day to start looking after your body! You get organised and spend endless minutes sweating and panting while you struggle to find your walking shoes and do up the laces. You turn on your

fitness tracker and slog it out walking to the letterbox and back, and after those excruciating 3 mins, you leap hopefully back on the scales… What!

Those stupid numbers haven’t moved!

Awww, Come on, after a hard slog like that you should have lost at least

2kgs, after all you were carrying a full glass of wine out to the letterbox, so surely that has to count as resistance. You are angry and disappointed so you march (because you read somewhere that marching burns more calories than walking) to the fridge, top up your now empty wine glass and cry into a cake that magically (you honestly don’t remember buying it – honestly) appeared in your fridge.

After your one and only battle you decide that you weren’t cut out for war. Even before giving yourself a chance to become the hero in your war against ageing and ill health. Nope, you surrender to an uncomfortable life spent blaming your body for something that you can change, without a fight at all.

The problem is, if you do surrender, you can end up with a much harder, even deadlier war to fight.

Without looking after your health and fitness you can end up in a war fighting heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity and even cancer.

All of these are far more likely to happen if you are overweight and not consistently active.

Excess weight, especially abdominal obesity, significantly increases your risk for heart disease.

Senior Gentle Balancing Exercises Before You Start

Use a stable high backed chair or a kitchen bench for support, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop! Don't try these balance exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Balancing exercises are fun but they can also be challenging. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok!

Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the type of gentle balance exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes. When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other? Is one knee more stable/stronger than the other?

Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember, balance training can be a fun activity but will only show benefits if it is done regularly.

Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your balance. So use your chair or your kitchen bench, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Calf Raise

Use a chair or kitchen bench for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise up on your toes and hold for a count of “one and two” Lower heels back to ground and hold for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Side Hip Raise

Use a chair or kitchen bench for support – do not lean as chair may tip or slide Support with the leg closest to the chair/bench try and keep this knee slightly bent Lift “outside” leg outward from the chair – only as high as YOU comfortably can! Hold for count of “one and two” Lower back to ground and rest Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Heel raise and push

Use a chair or Bench for support – do not lean as chair may tip or slide Support with one leg and try and keep this knee slightly bent Lift other foot up slowly until as close to your knee height as YOU comfortably can. Push back through your heel. Lower foot to ground then repeat movement. Change legs and repeat exercise, remember one leg may move easier than the other, and one leg may support you better than the other, move carefully and slowly.

Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

Seated Leg raises

Although these are done seated they will help strengthen your leg muscles and help with your balance. Lift one lower leg at a time up to a point that is comfortable for you and imagine you are pushing through your heel. Hold for a count of “one and two” Lower your leg and repeat with other leg Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok! Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

Being overweight means you now have a one in three chance of suffering from heart disease.

Research published in 2014-15 shows that only 35% of adults in Australia, aged 65 and over, exercised sufficiently (150 mins a week). Also that 72% of over 65s were overweight or obese. 72%!

Think about that.

If you and 9 friends are gathered then 7 of you are likely to be overweight with a much higher risk of suffering heart disease. And none of these numbers take into account those who also smoke or drink more than 2 standard glasses of alcohol a day.

that look like I’m listening to music but aren’t turned on, so I don’t have to chat. Weights are my weapon of choice, I concentrate on how my body feels, what it’s able to do today compared to yesterday. Some days my body will surprise me with it’s abilities and other days it struggles to do what it did the week before.

Every body will have days where exercise is easy and others when your body wants to hide in a bunker.

This is normal! Even top athletes have days like this, but they don’t give up, they just keep consistently working towards their goals.

Sometimes your battle can look insurmountable. You feel like a lone soldier with a pea shooter fighting a battalion of tanks. But it doesn’t have to be like that. Really! You know I’ve told you before that exercising with others can be more beneficial than a long march alone in the wilderness of fitness.

Yes sometimes it’s great to exercise alone. You can spend quality time in your own head without a lot of background noise, walking, jogging or cycling, especially on Bribie, is an awesome way to sort out mental battles we can all have, that can impact on your exercise journey and your mental health.

And yes, your friends may tell you that “one more wine won’t matter” or that your flowing frumpy cover everything dress is wonderful, while handing you some cake, unfortunately in a lot of cases they secretly don’t want you to win your war because that will show that they have already surrendered.

So whether you are battling your bulge or arm wrestling your abs, (that would look weird?!?) for weight loss or to become stronger, more independent, and able to enjoy every aspect of your life, find someone who will take that white surrender flag from your hand and give you the right weapons so you can march your way towards your best health ever.

Nursing is in high demand as the need for more skilled nurses continues to grow.

Minister for Training and Skills Development Shannon Fentiman said with health care one of our fastest growing industries it’s critical we have enough nurses to meet the demand.

“We want to make sure we have the skilled workers we will need for the jobs now and into the future,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Last year we doubled the training subsidy for the Diploma of Nursing making it around $4,000 cheaper to study to be an enrolled nurse.”

“It’s fantastic to see an increase of over 270 new students enrolled in the Diploma of Nursing at TAFE and CQU Tafe since we announced the increased subsidy in December.

“People are living longer and with Queensland’s population also increasing more health care workers will be needed in the future, we are ensuring we have the trained personnel in place,” Ms Fentiman said.

The Minister and Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan met with enrolled nurses at the Caboolture Hospital where the Palaszczuk Government committed $352.9 million to deliver 130 new beds and

significantly expand the services offered at the facility.

“We are investing in the health of our growing community,” Mr Ryan said.

“This includes our commitment to increase services at Caboolture hospital and $1 million in the Caboolture TAFE which includes $300,000 under this year’s State Budget for technology upgrades.”

“The health training at TAFE Caboolture feeds into the demand for staff at medical services in the surrounding northside community.”

There are currently 425 Diploma of nursing students enrolled at the Caboolture TAFE. “The University of the Sunshine Coast also uses the health facilities at TAFE Caboolture to deliver university and vocational courses and student nurses are undertaking vocational training at Caboolture Hospital,” Ms Fentiman said.

“Our support for Diploma of Nursing is in addition to our free apprenticeships for under 21s initiative which has three apprenticeships on offer in healthcare (Individual Support)."

“And there are over 30 local high school students undertaking a valuable qualification in Health Services at the Caboolture hospital while they are completing high school.”

“With more than half of the nation’s school-based apprentices and trainees being in Queensland, this shows that young people can finish year 12 and earn a qualification at the same time.”

By 2031 the population of Caboolture and surround is expected to increase by more than 50 per cent.

State Government launches Summer boating drive A new maritime enforcement team will hit Queensland waters this summer to help stem a rise in boating incidents.

The team of specially trained Maritime Safety Queensland officers rolled out across the south east on October 4, which started its mission on Gold Coast waterways.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said skippers are responsible for their safety and the safety of others around them, including family members and friends.

“Queenslanders love the water. And why not? We’ve got perfect weather, boating conditions and the State Government is investing more than $100 million in boatie infrastructure,” Mr Bailey said.

“Unfortunately, we’ve seen the number of fatal marine incidents on the rise, and with the summer boating season still ahead of us, this safety campaign couldn’t come at a better time."

War on Wreck Chair and Member for Redlands Kim Richards said the maritime team will be supported by compliance partners from Queensland Water Police and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol.

taking the safety message directly to boaties wherever they’re operating," Ms Richards said.

“This campaign is a combination of education and enforcement – so there’s no excuse for putting your life and the lives of others in danger.

They will run over the next 12 months and include inland waterways with the support of Seqwater.

“Wherever and whenever the teams operate, they will be a highly visible presence on the water and a physical reminder to skippers of their safety obligations.”

Fast stats:

In 2018, the Brisbane management area received 53 marine incident reports involving 82 vessels (73 Queensland regulated ships and nine domestic commercial vessels). There were 18 people injured in these 53 incidents including one fatality and four hospital admissions.

The Gold Coast management area received 83 marine incident reports involving 125 vessels (115 Queensland regulated ships and 10 domestic commercial vessels). Twenty-nine people were injured in these 83 incidents including 16 who were admitted to hospital.

The Sunshine Coast management area received 36 marine incidents reports involving 54 vessels (51 Queensland regulated ships and three domestic commercial vessels). Nine people were injured in these 36 incidents including four who were admitted to hospital.

Human factors were the most significant contributor to many incidents which frequently happened on smooth water, with good visibility in clear weather.

Federal member for Longman Terry Young MP gets socks off to promote diabetes awareness Member for Longman Terry Young MP has a simple message for people living with diabetes in the Longman community: “Get Your Socks Off”.

There are 10,700 people in Longman living with all types of diabetes.

Mr Young is supporting Diabetes Australia’s campaign to reduce the number of preventable diabetes-related foot problems and amputations.

“Every year there are 10,000 hospital admissions for diabetes related foot problems and around 4,400 diabetesrelated amputations in Australia – and 85% of these are preventable,” Mr Young said.

“According to the most recent figures the Moreton Bay - North, which includes Longman electorate, ranks 26 (out of 80) in Australia in the rate of amputations.

“Every amputation is a tragedy for the person involved and their family and that’s why I supported Diabetes Australia today at Parliament House and got my socks off to raise awareness of this key issue.”

Mr Young said there were simple steps people with diabetes could take to reduce their own personal risk of the kind of foot problems that can lead to serious issues and amputations.

“Check your feet every day. If you have trouble reaching your feet or seeing the bottom of your feet, use a mirror or ask

a family member or carer for help,” Mr Young said.

“Some of the things to look out for include dry skin or excessive moisture, thickened skin such as calluses or corns, cracks, blisters or ulcers or any change in the shape and thickness of your nails.

“The most important thing is to seek help early – if you think there is any foot problem, see your GP or podiatrist and make sure you get your feet checked regularly.

“Early treatment can help prevent problems escalating – and potentially save a toe or foot from amputation.

“The good news is we have a growing network of diabetes High Risk Foot Services around the country, with expert interdisciplinary teams of health professionals who can help prevent amputations of toes and limbs.”

Mr Young said some people were at a higher level of risk and needed more frequent foot checks and should be accessing a diabetes High Risk Foot Service.

“If you’ve experienced nerve damage or noticed any changes in the shape of your feet you need to be extra vigilant,” Mr Young said.

“Every day 12 people undergo a diabetes-related amputation and most are preventable. If we all play our part, we can end the tragedy of diabetes-related amputations within a generation.”

Prime minister Scott Morrison visits the Longman Electorate and NDIS participants

The Longman electorate currently has 1,477 NDIS participants and 281 providers, as of the 30th June 2019.

Mr Young said the Morrison Government needed to ensure that the NDIS continues to give Australians with disability the resources and services they need to greatly enhance and improve their overall quality of life.

“We need to help people with disability to learn, build and develop the skills they need to be independent and go about their daily lives with ease, retain and find employment, help them get access to the vital services they need and empower them to engage and make a difference within their community,” Mr Young said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has visited the Longman electorate to chat with a group of local National Disability Insurance Scheme clients at a Roundtable meeting with Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP and Minister for the NDIS Stuart Robert MP. The NDIS Roundtable meeting was held at the Morayfield Health Hub on Tuesday, 8th October.

Mr Young said the meeting offered valuable insight into the scheme through the eyes of the NDIS participants.

“It was great to have Prime Minister Scott Morrison in the electorate to hear the stories, needs, talents and goals of some of Longman’s NDIS clients,” Mr Young said.

“Finding out the needs of individuals across the Longman electorate and meeting these needs is one of the many

New Local Government Remuneration Commission chair announced Former Sunshine Coast and Noosa mayor and widely respected local government identity Bob Abbot will chair the new Local Government Remuneration Commission.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the commission would establish categories for Queensland’s 77 councils and the amount of remuneration payable to councillors and mayors in those categories.

He said Mr Abbot would be joined

by Andrea Ranson and Reimen Hii, both of whom are part-time mediators for the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT).

“Bob, Andrea and Reimen not only bring a wealth of experience in local government and the law, but I know they will also ensure that Queensland’s diversity will be well represented in their recommendations.

“Bob has 32 years’ experience as an elected councillor and mayor, and has held board and panel positions with the South East Queensland Council of Mayors and the LGAQ.

“Importantly, he has been willing to pass on his knowledge as a mentor to newly elected mayors and councillors, with a particular focus

on Indigenous mayors.”

“He will be very ably assisted by Andrea and Reimen, whose legal expertise, experience in public administration, and engagement with local governments will be of enormous value.

“I’d also like to note that Reimen is the 2019 recipient of the Australian Young Lawyer Award for his outstanding contribution to the law through his pro bono work.

“I wish them all well over the course of their four-year tenure and I have complete confidence they will do an outstanding job for communities across Queensland.”

The role of the commission is to establish the categories of local governments; decide the category to which each local government belongs; and decide the maximum amount of remuneration payable to the councillors and mayors in each category.

The categories are reviewed every four years, while the remuneration is reviewed annually.

The commission, along with the new Councillor Conduct Tribunal replace the former Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal as part of the Palaszczuk Government’s rolling reform agenda to improve integrity, transparency and accountability in the sector.

New push to increase council spending transparency

Queenslanders will soon have clear information about how councils are spending developer infrastructure charges, with amendments proposed for the state planning system, delivering on a 2017 state election commitment.

Minister for Planning Cameron Dick said the amendments will require councils to publish the amount of infrastructure charges being collected and where that money is being spent.

“The amendments will create a better understanding of how development activity benefits the broader community, through improved infrastructure and services such as stormwater, transport, public parks and land for community facilities,” Mr Dick said.

“It will also highlight the considerable infrastructure being delivered by local councils to support regional growth.

“We made an election commitment to provide Queenslanders with easier access to information about the money collected and spent in their towns and cities, and these amendments deliver on that commitment.

“Developers pay significant amounts to local governments to build and upgrade infrastructure to support their development, so it’s important the community knows where councils are spending these funds.”

“On top of this, councils also invest in additional infrastructure to serve existing and future residents,” he said.

From 1 January 2020, councils will be required to publish online the value of infrastructure charges they receive, and how and where these funds are spent.

This will include publishing information such as infrastructure charges notices and documents used in the review, making or amendment of a local government infrastructure plan.

“From any member of the public can search for their suburb and see how much in infrastructure charges has been collected, and what infrastructure has been delivered,” Mr Dick said.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the proposed changes would align with, and build on, potential amendments to the Local Government Act for transparency and accountability.

“Encouragingly, some local governments are already publishing this information online, in their budgets and annual reports, while others are in the process of providing this transparency,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

Property Council of Australia’s Queensland Executive Director Chris Mountford said the lack of transparency around the collection and spending of infrastructure charges has contributed to community concerns that development occurs without the necessary local infrastructure upgrades.

“What is often not understood is that all new developments are required to make a significant contribution to the cost of upgrading local government infrastructure as part of their approval.

“Until now, it has been difficult for the community to see the expected correlation between growth and development, and the associated infrastructure that should be delivered by council.

“These amendments will allow everyone from across government, industry and the community to better understand and keep tabs on how these levies are contributing to local infrastructure upgrades.”

Community News SEQ Alliance spokesperson, Rose Adams, said increased transparency and accountability in the planning system is important.

“The community needs to have confidence in the planning system and for this to happen it needs to be one which is open and transparent,” said Ms Adams.

“We want to clearly and easily be able to see the community benefit resulting from planning and development decisions and gain an understanding of how these decisions were made.

Given the significance of the changes, local governments will be working between now and January 2020 to ensure they have necessary reporting systems in place, and to ensure this important information is up to date and accurate.

The proposed amendments have been subject to extensive consultation with local governments and key industry stakeholders, including the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), Property Council Australia (PCA) and the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA).

Caboolture Police unveil fitting tribute to fallen colleagues

Minister for Police, and the Member for Morayfield, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP, today joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll in officially unveiling the Police Memorial Garden and Monument at Caboolture Police Station.

The new monument complements the existing memorial to Sergeant Perry Irwin who tragically lost his life in 2003, and whose memorial was moved from the previous Caboolture Station to the new station in May 2019.

A community competition was held to design the new monument and the winning design features a traditional police sillitoe tartan pattern in the layout of the structure to represent all levels of service.

This pattern is then formed into stacked blocks which represent a society built on the basis of each member holding their weight while the layering of the structure creates a dynamic and tactile object, similar to the role of a police officer.

As the QPS paused today to commemorate National Police Remembrance Day, Commissioner Carroll said it was a fitting time for the memorial garden and monument to be unveiled.

“The importance of us as a Service coming together to recognise the greatest sacrifice that can be made by our colleagues cannot be overlooked,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“I am so proud of the work that has been done here in Caboolture to honour and remember our fallen colleagues, not just on National Police Remembrance Day, but every day of the year.

“I thank the community for their input in creating such a fitting tribute to Queensland police officers; it is our privilege to serve you.”

Minister Ryan said he was honoured to be in attendance for the official unveiling, having seen works progress on the Station, memorial garden and monument over the past few years.

“The hard work of all involved in bringing this concept to life is a testament to the value placed upon the Queensland Police Service,” Minister Ryan said.

“This value is not misplaced, and the Queensland Government is so proud of the work done by police officers right across the state, each and every day.

“The local community here has shown its appreciation for the work police do by raising funds for this important Memorial, as did the local Council which donated $10k.

“This reflects the great relationship the Queensland Police Service has built with the people of this local community,” the Police Minister said.

Wildfire Investigation

Drone Photo of the fire in the reserve taken from White Patch, by Kevin Gould The cause behind August’s rampant, out of control, fire in the Bribie Island National Park has been revealed with the conclusion of the Department of Environment and Science (DES) investigation.

A spokesperson from DES has said “There were no planned burns conducted in the area in the days leading up to the wildfire outbreak.

“Three weeks previously, a planned burn was conducted by QPWS and HQ Plantations in the national park, in favourable, cool weather conditions.

“DES’s investigation has found the fire in August was most likely caused by peat deposits from the earlier planned burn, which continued to smoulder beneath the surface within a remote, swampy location.

“Due to adverse weather and wind conditions, which were unusual that early in the fire season, the peat layer reignited surface vegetation and the fire quickly spread. It was brought under control two days later.”

Good news is that along with the closing of the investigation into the fire’s cause, animals have been sighted returning to the National Park.

“Since the fire, rangers from Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) have been observing animals, including various macropod species and reptiles, returning to the area that was burnt.” The DES spokesperson said.

“During and after the fire on Bribie Island, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers monitored the fire line and burnt ground for injured wildlife.

“QFES crews recovered one injured wallaby, which was passed to wildlife carers.

“DES appreciates the offers of assistance from wildlife carers, and thanks them for their support during and after the wildfire.

“During any fire, safety is paramount.

Only fire-trained people in protective gear are permitted on active fire grounds until an area is declared safe.

Risks include smoke inhalation, burning materials below the surface, and falling trees.

“For this reason, wildlife carers were not able to access the fire ground, due to concerns for their safety, until the fire zone was declared safe.”

The wildfire in the National Park on Bribie Island is one of many that has ravaged Queensland this year; there are still fires burning in rural Queensland.

In their statement the DES spokesperson said “This year, Queensland has experienced severe and extreme fire conditions early in the fire season, due to the impacts of climate change.

“This is why the Queensland Government allocated an extra $16 million over four years in this year’s Budget, and $2.6 million in funding annually to provide improved capability for bushfire management in our national parks and forests.”

Since the release of the investigation results Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP has said the following "The Island’s ecosystem is fragile and smouldering peat fire from previous controlled burns presents a real risk to an Island community such as ours.

“Peat fires can burn for many months undetected and ultimately destroy ecosystems and wildlife as we saw in the August fire.

“I am most concerned about the Minister’s blasé approach to what has occurred. If this fire had reignited closer to residential areas on the island, then the rate of its spread and its intensity could have been catastrophic.

“We are highly vulnerable to bush fire on the Island with the only way out being a one lane bridge.

I want more answers from the Minister - we need to know what risk management strategies she will ensure are implemented so that this situation never happens again."

The fire burnt a total area of approximately 2400ha before being brought under control, and for an extended period after the fire camping grounds were closed off.

With wildlife now returning to the Bribie Island National Park hopefully another wildfire won’t occur this fire season.

Cranky Lizard Speaks Trying to make sense of climate change discussions [ if you can call them that ! ] in our Community If they believed in a God, they would be on their knees giving constant prayers of thanks for the continuing drought – because the prolonged misery of the drought in Western NSW and South Western Queensland gives some strength to the arguments being shouted across various forums by ‘ climate change ‘ advocates.

Rational discussion about this matter has virtually disappeared from our lives.

It is not climate change that is a looming threat to our way of life – it is ideologically driven lunacy. The Western democracies are facing threats to good governance and sensible democratic outcomes; rational discussions are becoming hard to find on any subject of substance.

Biological diversity and political hatred occupy most media reporting, which is rapidly becoming individual advocacy rather than objective reporting of facts.

This idiocy is driven by media and political elites who are wallowing in misleading and ideological campaigns.

Divisions have been created, labels are attached to persons – you are classed as a ‘ denier ‘ by a layer of social commentators if you express doubt or ask for irrefutable evidence of climate change in a forum where they have access to your comments.

Cranky Lizard is reminded of the mobs forming in dusty market places which are surrounded by phallic towers. Mobs form on both sides of the market place and the shouting at each other begins! Shouting and gesturing becomes more frantic, little mobs of foam-flecked faces spurt from the crowds; they make obscene gestures to the other mob across the market place – who reply in kind.

No one is listening, and everyone is right.

What utter nonsense?

There is irrefutable evidence that humans have polluted our oceans with plastic to the point where it is severe and visible. Fish and ocean mammals are dying because of this human rubbish; in large numbers.

Cranky Lizard notes that our global response to this is to provide a forum at the UN, a body created with serious intent and purpose, for hysterical teenagers to shout at adults.

And there can be no doubt that our global climate is affected by the growth of human populations and their associated activity – but – the strident claims that “ the science is settled “ sounds more like a religious slogan each time it is screeched in our Parliaments or spread like fungus riddled molasses across our television screens by zealots.

Fearful claims of oceans rising to swamp island nations writhe their grubby way around our media. No evidence exists of this. Coastal photography casts doubt on these claims. Presumably, the laws of physics still apply and that a body of water will find its level, regardless of the size of that body of water, having due regard for what Cranky Lizard calls centrifugal bumps in large ocean spaces!

Excess atmospheric levels of carbon-di-oxide are branded as the devil in this cocktail of claims and counterclaims and because of the noise and shouting it is challenging, if not impossible, to arrive at any sensible conclusion about carbon-di-oxide’s effect upon our World. A rational observation is that one volcano in Iceland can spew more tonnes of this gas into the atmosphere in a week than human activity can create in 24 months. So how do you equate that?

The whole rickety wagon rumbles on! Men who had Cranky Lizard’s respect, such as Sir David Attenborough have lowered themselves into the political crucible and level personal criticism at popularly

elected Prime Ministers for supporting coal mining. Cranky Lizard does wonder what has happened to these people and their commonsense? What is the point of condemning politicians and large numbers of humans for mining coal without providing some suggested solutions to the problems?

And this, the whole madness of solutions… drags Cranky Lizard kicking and screaming into the realm of alternative power sources.

Wind generators, ugly excrescences visually polluting our landscapes produce almost nothing in terms of baseload power; they are entirely dependent upon nature – the wind – to blow always at determined levels: this obviously cannot happen, and therefore the whole wind machine circus seems to Cranky Lizard an expensive and offensive option to power generation. Solar power is terrific if you want to boil a billy of tea in the outback or burn ant's bums off with mirrors, but as a practical solution to providing baseload power for modern industrial cities, solar energy is an intellectual indulgence.

Cranky Lizard accepts, along with the majority of sensible members of our community, that some changes are occurring to our climate. There must be… billions of humans living on the planet make it so. But we are not facing Armageddon; there are sensible solutions to what is happening and addressing the way we manage our water in Australia is one of them. Each year, in an arc stretching from Townsville to Broome about 1 metre of rain falls onto the ground and it all runs North into the Torres strait or the Arafura Sea- this water could be diverted South.

Scaring the living daylights out of our children is cruel and pointless because we are not facing Armageddon. Explaining

to them, in a calm and rational manner, the ways available to us to address these matters is the adult way to deal with the challenges we face.

Cranky Lizard does not pretend to have the answers to the global challenges of climate change – but Cranky Lizard states unequivocally; that how we are currently dealing with this is wrong, just plain wrong!

Alternative sources of energy for the human race are not wind energy and solar energy in isolation. Nuclear energy, perhaps nuclear fusion rather than nuclear fission may provide the power we need – nuclear fusion, which joins stable atoms rather than nuclear fission, which splits unstable atoms may well be a solution to be explored; and Cranky Lizard has no doubt that scientists are already doing this.

It seems, and it is, ludicrous, to expect Australians to punish themselves and retard their economy in the name of climate change and zero carbon emissions when vast nations to our North are releasing in one day what Australia may produce in six months. Comparisons such as this are stupid and only serve to increase the cynicism of people within our communities when commonsense tells them that selfflagellating discomfort is pointless.

Australia is a nation of uncommon wealth.

We have plenty of water, it is underground and much has been wasted, but it is there and we can use it better – in fact – we must use it better. Our farmers and our scientists are some of the best in the world at producing food for ourselves and for our neighbours; our agricultural techniques are innovative and productive. We have begun to address a severe pollution problem – vast wastelands of plastic, which can be turned into roads, houses and building materials.

Cranky Lizard believes that scaring our children, shouting at each other over dusty market places, attaching labels to groups of people, pursuing niche politics and warm fuzzy dumb solutions to real problems are simply preventing us from dealing with a real challenge.

To reinforce the idea of media-driven frenzy in climate change reporting – Cranky Lizard refers you all to an article written in the Week-End Australian dated 28 September 2019, and written under the By-Line of Greg Roberts, a journalist for the Australian.

The article has the headline “ The Great Forest Fire that Wasn't. “ It goes on to describe how the recent fires in Southern Queensland in the Lamington State Forest and the Binna Burra Lodge burn out were all part of a ferocious fire that destroyed centuries-old rain forest, part of the World Heritage and that this catastrophe was brought about by climate change. The only problem is, as The Australian pointed out… it didn’t happen! The reporting of the fire by other print and electronic media was basically and factually incorrect. You read the article for yourself and form your own opinion.

Cranky Lizard also knows that these words will induce hysteria in some who read them, will induce anger and hostility in others and there will be calls for Cranky Lizard’s skin. There will be those that will decide the statements and facts presented here – well, that is all fine, but instead of running about with your hair on fire, stop, think and deal with the problem; leave the hysteria and the politics out of it.

This is a matter too serious for local politics.

This is a matter which demands clear thinking, rational discussion and the calm application of logic.

Enjoy your days; life is good and there is plenty of it about.

On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we remember you. As the end of the year draws closer, a number of important days mark everyone’s calendars. End of school, Christmas and New Years are a few of the dates that many spending copious amounts of time preparing for, ensuring that everything runs according to plan.

Perhaps one of the most important dates to occur during the month of November is Remembrance Day, the time we pay respect to those who have fought valiantly for Australia. Services are held across the country and many people don poppies as a symbolic recognition of their respect to those who have fallen and the many veterans around our country. The commemorative day was originally known to many as Armistice Day, as per the armistice signed in November 1918 by the Allies (Britain, France, Russia, Italy, United States of America and Australia) and the Central Powers (Germany, Bulgaria and AustriaHungary). The name was later changed after the end of World War Two as the United Kingdom proposed that the day should recognise all armed forces- the navy, air force and the army- and their contributions and personal losses in both World Wars. The agreement by both the Central Powers and the Allies to sign the important document marked the end of World War One and the beginning of many annual ceremonies. In the following year, 1919, the first ceremony was held to respect the agreement that had been signed the year prior. During that ceremony, everyone in attendance was requested to hold a minute of silence and remember their friends, family, comrades and even their enemies that had fallen during the prolonged, horrific war. Poppies worn are done so as they were some of the first flowers to re-grow on the French and Belgium battlefields. Ceremonies are able to be attended across Australia, with the Australian War Memorial, located in Canberra, holding one of the largest services within the country. Last years’ service in Brisbane joined many ceremonies across various other states in ringing church and city bells to show their respect. Such ceremonies occur not only within Australia but also in New Zealand, Canada and other allied countries. As we approach the eleventh of November once more, it is more important than ever to pay our respects to those who sacrificed their lives for our country, and those who continue to do so today in a modern society.

A minute of silence says more than words ever could about the importance of Remembrance Day. It holds a permanent place, not only in Australian history, but world history. To those who have served, are serving or will serve we thank you for your service and your contribution.

African Wildlife Experience Like No Other!

It is no secret that Africa is one of those “bucket list” destinations that people have to see at least once in their lifetime.

My sister and I were lucky enough to tick this off all thanks to the Africa Safari Co. Over 10 days we were able to experience the hustle and bustle of Kenya’s capital, Nairobi and the remote and untouched areas of the Tanzanian National Parks.

A Message from Simone Wilson MP, regarding not recontesting the Seat of Pumicestone Next Year!

“Representing the Pumicestone Electorate is a privilege and comes with great responsibility.

Today, I announce that I will not be recontesting the seat of Pumicestone at the next State Election to be held in October 2020.

I have made this decision in what I believe to be the best interests of my family and after a great deal of deliberation.

I am proud of what I have accomplished as an Opposition Member of Parliament and I hope locals feel Pumicestone is progressing in the right direction with the attention I have been giving to the most important needs of our community. Our number one need is for road upgrades to Bribie Island Road and Beachmere Road. These two State Controlled Roads are major connecting routes, yet they are dangerous and congested in parts and are not meeting community expectations. The best way for the State Government to make a start is to put the $20 million of Federal funding that I advocated so strongly for into fixing Bribie Island Road. This funding can kick start projects waiting in the wings, like the highly dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection.

These two roads are just too important to neglect any longer – there can be no more delays.

We have all seen the impact of our bridge being closed during traffic accidents and the all-to-usual gridlock being experienced on busy weekends and public holidays. We need our emergency vehicles to be able to access the bridge at all times without impediment. It carries great risk to the public for emergency service vehicles to navigate a grid-locked bridge in their efforts to reach a potentially lifesaving call. With the amount of people now living on the Island, coupled with the volume of visitors and tourists who come to enjoy our shores, it’s time for planning to progress on building a new bridge for Bribie now, not in 10 or 15 years’ time.

I am pleased to have strongly advocated for our environment and see the gains for this. We live in a unique area and I firmly believe that a measure of a good community is in how we act as custodians of our environment.

Shellfish collection (excluding Pippis) in Moreton Bay is now banned and

our eco-marine environment is better protected because of this. We now have a container refund station on the Island - no more lengthy trips to Caboolture or Morayfield are needed for locals.

Our pelicans who have roosted on Bribie Island Bridge for decades felt the full force of our community when decisions were made that endangered their safety and wellbeing. I was proud to stand alongside my community as we took up the fight for our pelicans to have their roosts returned. Returning only five roosts wasn’t enough and only the LNP has committed to returning all 13 roosts and removing the callous deterrents that were put in place.

I am also committed to better health services and particularly increasing access to urgent care for Bribie locals.

This is why I was pleased to bring local health providers together recently to work on ways of better servicing the health needs of locals and these discussions are continuing.

I will continue to work hard for my community whilst I am the local State representative and take this opportunity to thank my community for the ongoing support and understanding.

I wish the chosen LNP candidate for Pumicestone great success and look forward to working with my successor to ensure they are part of an LNP government, and that Deb Frecklington is the next Premier of Queensland.”

Palaszczuk Government Media Release LNP moves to end commercial fishing in Queensland

The Palaszczuk government has stepped in to prevent an LNP move in Parliament that would have banned commercial fishing in the state.

An Opposition motion to disallow the state’s Fisheries regulations was debated in Parliament on Tuesday.

The effect of the motion, if it had passed, would have been to invalidate the licences of every commercial and charter fishing operator in Queensland.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said thousands of jobs would have been at risk if the Opposition’s reckless motion had come in to effect.

“I want to make it very clear that the Opposition’s position on Fisheries would destroy the fishing industry in Queensland,” Mr Furner said.

“This is not an exaggeration. The regulations that the LNP would disallow are the very ones that allow licences to be issued to commercial fishers.

“If these were disallowed, every commercial and charter fisher in Queensland would lose their legal authority to catch, process or sell fish.”

Mr Furner said the impact would go beyond those who caught the seafood.

“Think of our restaurants, fish & chip shops, our transport workers and the exporters who would suddenly have no supplies of Queensland seafood,” he said.

“Every bit of seafood consumed in Queensland would have to be imported from interstate or overseas, and there is no doubt jobs would be lost as a result.”

Mr Furner said more than 1300 commercial fishers and 350 charter business operators would be unable to earn a living and there would be knockon effects for our $27b tourism industry as well.

"Our work to ensure a sustainable fishery has actually worked to create charter fishing jobs, as well as protecting commercial fishing jobs by making sure there are fish to catch,” Mr

Furner said.

“The Opposition, by comparison, offers only this Parliamentary vandalism that would destroy jobs and businesses across the state.

“The LNP doesn’t even have a Fisheries policy, other than to oppose every effort made to ensure the sustainability of the industry.”

LNP Leader of the opposition Deb Frecklington says Labor votes in favour of destroying Queensland’s fishing industry

The livelihoods of fishers are on the line and the cost of seafood is set to soar, thanks to Labor’s flawed commercial and recreational fishing regulations.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said the Palaszczuk Labor Government is failing this vital industry.

“The LNP supports a sustainable fishing industry but Labor hasn’t got the balance right and the consultation process has been a sham,” Ms Frecklington said.

“These new regulations will cost jobs.

“Today’s disallowance motion moved by the LNP was supported by the Queensland Seafood Industry, Moreton Bay Seafood Industry Association and the Gulf of Carpentaria Commercial Fisherman Association.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk’s priorities are all wrong.”

LNP Shadow Minister for Fisheries Tony Perrett said recreational fishers face a reduction in the total take of mud crabs, new limits for blue swimmer crabs and a decrease in the possession limit for pippis.

“Fishers want a sustainable industry but Labor has put that at risk due to these reforms which have been rammed through,” Mr Perrett said.

“Labor’s anti-jobs, anti-regions and antifishing regulation changes are nothing short of a disgrace and they’re not based on science but petty politics instead.

“Fisheries Minister Mark Furner needs to release the science he is using to justify these draconian changes.

“This is yet another fail from Annastacia Palaszczuk and her embattled Minister who don’t care about jobs or the costs to consumers.”

Comparison is the thief of joy

Business is, for the most part, highly competitive. There are so many different providers of virtually the same services and unfortunately, not all will survive.

However, when you focus on comparison to others on a regular basis, you're on a sure-fire track to go right off course. It is important to measure your own progress and run your own race. My dragon boat coach used to say "momentum goes where attention flows" and he is right!

If you're so busy looking around at what everyone else is doing, it's impossible to concentrate on running your own race.

Your efforts become sloppy because your focus is elsewhere - I've seen this happen a zillion times in both dragon boats and in business. Excited new teams/business owners often feel they have to "watch" the competition to beat them!

It's your own race/business. Unique.

Once you've got your race/business plan bedded down, the focus should be on how you/your business is progressing against your plan.

What to compare

Compare where you are today to where you were 6 months ago, a year ago, 5 or even 10 years ago. These are the statistics that are meaningful as they

Polio might be just a memory in most of the world, but the disease still exists, mainly affecting children under 5. One in 200 infections leads to irreversible paralysis, which, if they affect the breathing muscles, may lead to death.

Due to vaccination efforts, we are 99% of the way to eradicating polio globally, but there are three countries, Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan which have never stopped transmission of polio. Polio from these “endemic” countries can infect children in other countries where vaccination is less than adequate.

There are three strains of wild poliovirus, none of which can survive for long periods outside the human body.

Type 2 wild poliovirus was eradicated in 1999 and type 3 has not been found in the world since 2012.

Cheap and effective vaccines are available to prevent polio. The oral polio vaccine (OPV) is easy to administer, even by volunteers, and is inexpensive.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative which has five partners (WHO, ROTARY, the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), UNICEF, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) has utilised 20 million volunteers over.the last 20 years. These volunteers have immunised nearly 3 billion children.

Large-scale vaccination rounds help rapidly boost immunity, not only against polio but, with little additional cost, other health interventions, for example, Vitamin A, give a general boost to immunity enabling children to fend off a range of infections.

Keeping on course

As you reach each goal, stop. Check how you are tracking. Decide where you may want to tweak a strategy.

In order to run your race, you need to be paying attention. In the dragon boat, we paid attention to each team member, to what each was bringing to the team in terms of commitment and effort in order to win the race.

In the business realm, this translates into a focus on what you are offering your audience - whether it is on social media, a blog, via email or in person.

It’s about how your staff are handling customers or in a volunteer-run organisation the level of skills each volunteer has. All of this is your front window – it is how you show your business to the world.

The quality of your content, your presentation and your service delivery are what leads to ongoing success. It is never a case of set and forget.

The little touches

Thank you. Two little words. Two very

powerful words. Of course, it is good manners to say a verbal thank you and that's pretty standard. But take it a step further. Make it more personal. Send a card (maybe even a gift if appropriate).

It's always a delight and a surprise to receive personal and unexpected thank you notes.

Think about this.....it's a rarity these days to receive snail or hand-delivered mail or even a follow-up phone call after you’ve completed a transaction. Online surveys are the norm as is an email. Be different. It’s these little extra thoughtful touches that differentiate one business experience from the next.

When you manage to touch the emotional side you are separating yourself from the pack. It’s good old fashioned manners and service at work – but it’s not commonplace.

None of these things takes very long and nor are they particularly costly.

But they are what sets your business apart from the next. These little touches demonstrate that you actually care about their experience and not just the $$ you’ve been paid.

Protecting your investment

As a business owner, you’ve spent time and money acquiring customers/ clients. Making the effort to protect your initial investment of customer/client acquisition makes good business sense.

It costs a lot more to keep bringing in new clients. It makes sense to nurture the ones you already have. Don’t

Problems breathing or swallowing, sleep-related breathing disorders and decreased tolerance for cold temperatures are other notable symptoms. Treatment is limited to adequate rest, conservation of available energy, and supportive energy measures such as leg braces and energy-saving devices such as powered wheelchairs, analgesia and sleep aids.

Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded a Community Grant to Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) to assist with the event.

Councillor for Division 2, Peter Flannery, advised BANG that they had been successful in receiving the grant which would go to costs associated with the large program of events scheduled over the weekend 15, 16 and 17 May 2020.

We are now getting out to businesses in the area and giving them details of how they can get involved to make this a great birthday celebration for Beachmere.

“We have recently had some very exciting ‘BIG’ news for Beachmere, so it’s a great opportunity to achieve some lasting results for the community. We can’t wait to make the announcement,” Karen said.

Beachmere U3A continues to offer great classes and workshops Beachmere U3A kicked off its Term Four Program recently with some great classes, workshops and incentives for members.

Several ukulele classes, guitar and singalong for fun for the music lovers; quilting, craft, art and card making, canasta, genealogy and exploring DNA as well as computing, orchid growing and Italian along with the ever popular Gentle Chair Yoga are all available on the current program.

“We have a few incentives to encourage students to participate including some free classes for next year if you renew early, but the response has been overwhelming.

We have also instituted the “Above and Beyond” award, and are asking members to nominate someone they think has gone above and beyond for Beachmere U3A.

We will announce the winner at our End of Year Celebration in early December and we are having trouble keeping up with the demand for voting slips” Mary said.

Youth Voice Solution to Pollution

Every year, around 8 million kilograms of plastic make its way into the ocean, building up in a massive pile in the middle of the Pacific Ocean known as ‘The Great Pacific Garbage Patch’. This island of waste is now around the size of Queensland and growing by the day. Our planet is suffocating in plastic, leading to hugely detrimental impacts on not only wildlife but also you.

Research shows that we have approximately 12 years to take action. 12 years before the world becomes too polluted to sustain human life.

“Unless we get to grips with this quickly, we will soon find our oceans dominated by plastic. It’s a prospect that hardly bears thinking.” – Sir David Attenborough, 2019.

Take a minute to consider that image: more plastic in the ocean than wildlife, and humans regularly consuming potentially lethal amounts of microplastics. Do you want to live in a world like that? The first step

to a solution to pollution is raising awareness - making society see the devastating effects of our careless actions. We’ve all seen examples of the positive impact we can make, when we care strongly about an issue. When the Notre-Dame Cathedral burnt to the ground earlier this year, dozens of billionaires stepped forward, offering large sums of money to help rebuild.

Just this week when TV show Survivor favourite Luke Toki failed to win the prize money that he said he would use to provide for his 3 children with severe medical issues, a Go-Fund-Me page raised more than $500 000 for his family within the space of only 60 hours. Imagine this level of concern and effort directed towards cleaning up the Pacific Garbage Patch. What an immense difference we could make in our world, if only our society understood the severity of this devastating issue.

Plastic pollution is an issue that can be solely blamed on people, and therefore, it is our responsibility to find a solution.

The first step to creating a long-term fix is to raise awareness around the issue, inspiring people to make muchneeded changes. Only then can we begin to solve this colossal crisis. We all contribute to the pollution, but we can also be part of the solution.

Well technology has had a huge impact on our lives by making less labour for workers, improving learning strategies and making it easier to connect with people all around the world.

Technology has made business more cost effective, improved efficiency and has enhanced time management.

Farmers all around the world use technology to decrease the amount of labour and stress they deal with every day. Technology improves the quality of their produce by strengthening the plant so it can handle drought, herbicide tolerance, and disease resistance. It helps farmers produce food faster and more efficiently.

How can technology improve our learning strategies? Technology can make school more enjoyable for teenagers by implementing fun games into learning, while also benefiting productivity and focus in class.

Technology also provides students with a wide range of online resources, which will further develop their knowledge.

Technology has really developed over the last few years by connecting us to people all around the world, did you know that over 66.53% of the whole world’s population owns a mobile device? Technology has provided us with a variety of entertainment ranging from TV, Phones, Tablets, consoles and more. A lot of people say that technology is making us less social, but in fact it is increasing our social interactions.

Technology connects us with loved ones where ever we are, so we don’t feel away from them.

To conclude, our society wouldn’t function as smoothly without technology, because it reduces manual labour that farmers and workers must do, it helps people to communicate to others, improves focus with learning, provides endless entertainment for you to enjoy and assists in medical needs.

Carla said, recalling her time competing in athletics, “1989 I went to Sweden with the Australian team, I did athletics. I did the 100 (metre sprint), the 200 (metre sprint), the long jump, and the relay - and we won the relay, 4x100 (metre) relay.”

The trip to Sweden was Carla’s first overseas trip, and understandably her mother Christine remembers Carla having a lot of competing feelings.

“It was different because you’re representing your country,” Carla said.

When the Queensland state netball team for people with an intellectual disability was disbanded Carla stopped playing netball. In 2016 when Netball Queensland revived the state team to compete for the MLS Carla eagerly & happily put in her application to join.

This year’s MLS also holds a special meaning for Carla as the MLS is in Brisbane as well as the INAS Games for 2019. She made it a personal goal to make this year’s team, as it is also a celebration of 30 years since she first competed and won her gold medal at the INAS Games in Sweden.

To keep up her fitness level Carla has recently taken up walking netball here on Bribie Island. And even though she is retiring from competitive netball she fully intends to continue playing walking netball.

When she’s not keeping active Carla enjoys working on personal art projects. She loves using crayons and doing abstract art, her face breaks into a grin when she talks about art.

During our interview Carla expressed that she was just happy to compete and play with her team regardless of whether they won or lost, they would give it their all but at the end of the day, it wasn’t only about winning or losing.

Carla is thankful & appreciative for all the support the Bribie Island walking netball group has given her and for the hard work each individual member of the Queensland

Gems team have put in to prepare for this year’s competition.

At this year’s MLS, Queensland finished in fourth place. The results saw South Australia claiming gold, Victoria silver and New South Wales bronze. It’s safe to say that QLD put their hearts and souls into the game.

Fishing this month has been up and down, as usual for this time of year.

Still making our way towards summer, the weather has been slightly cool, with daily temperatures hovering in the lowmid twenties, which is about 2 degrees cooler than average. Apart from that big drop in the first week of October, the rain has been enough to stir the water up a bit but not enough to flush out the creeks. Afternoon breezes, coming from the SE, have been the standard.

Mid to late Spring is a great time of year to fish for flathead and this past month has seen some really impressive catches. The flathead have been found in all the usual places – on the Bribie side sandbanks, from White Patch down to Sylvan Beach; on the drift past the mouth of Ningi Creek, but especially around the second green marker, south of the bridge. Will was at that spot when he showed his mates how to bring in a flathead, using a soft plastic lure, on the rising tide.

Two Saturdays ago, the weather cleared up in time for Tom and Nick to catch three big ones. Again, all of them went for soft plastics, near the second marker.

It was good to know that these fish were released, because the bigger flathead are usually female, who should be spawning eggs over the late spring.

Flathead are pretty keen to eat anything on offer, at this time of year – Dave and his mates used chicken thighs to catch three of them. Soft-plastics, however, are an easy and interesting way to fish for them and much cheaper to lose than a hard-bodied lure. Look for sandy sections that are a bit weedy, with a bit of drop-off, for the boat to drift along in the current. If you cast towards the shallows and “hop” the lure gently back in, you might be able to tease a flathead into striking. You’ll know when you do!

Just get the landing net ready and keep the line tight and you’ll have something to show for your effort.

Flathead have been the star of recent fishing, but plenty of bream are also showing up in good sizes. Prawns have been a favoured bait, but worms and squid have also been doing the trick. If there is a rising tide, try the area north of Ningi Creek, or on the falling tide, drifting south from Shag Island. The bridge has also been a good spot for bream, just on the south side at the mainland end, over the change of tide - Cassiee and Dylan say there was a lot happening at the bridge last weekend, including shovel-nose and red-eye, and there good bream among them.

Crabbing is picking up, as the water warms. Some nice, heavy mud crabs are coming in from Ningi and Elimbah Creeks. As we move towards the bigger tides of summer, it’s a good idea to check that your pots have enough rope to stay on the bottom and are heavy enough to stay put against a strong current. So many times, the cry goes out that some-one’s crab pot “has been stolen”, when most likely it hasn’t been weighted down or has too short a rope, so it has danced off on the rising tide! Another thing to remember is to properly label the pot and the float, with your name and contact details – I hear the Fisheries blokes have been checking that both pots and floats carry correct markings.

There was a lot of interest in the Emergency Services Expo, held a couple of weekends ago at VMR. One of the most intriguing displays was a double tank that showed the amazing efficiency of oysters, in filtering and clearing water. It was used to promote the oyster reef restoration trial, called Restore Pumicestone Passage. I’ve just read the latest report on the Oyster Reef Project, situated outside Pacific Harbour. Six types of experimental reef structures are being monitored, to find a way to reintroduce oysters into the Pumicestone Passage. This fantastic work is showing early promise, which is “likely to lead to increased fisheries productivity” and a healthier local environment. The biggest threat to these reefs is something we can all help to prevent: anchor damage.

Let’s get the word out there - look for the sign above the reefs, just off Kakadu Beach and remember - drifting is fine but please do not anchor.

Bribie Island Bridge – it’s iconic

some even call it an architectural masterpiece. But like most structures of its kind it has a use by date that is fast approaching. I have been campaigning since day one for work to progress on the planning of a new bridge because if we don’t start now and leave it for another decade we’ll have some major problems on our hands. In the meantime, do you know what really goes on in keeping our bridge safe for all users?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads conducts three different levels of inspections on the “health” of the Bribie Island Bridge: Level 1 – This is a routine maintenance visual inspection to check the serviceability of the bridge (for road user safety), and to identify any emerging problems that requires maintenance Level 2 – This is a condition inspection where a detailed assessment and evaluation of the structure condition is undertaken to identify current and future maintenance needs Level 3 – This is an extensive detailed structural engineering inspection that may include physical testing and structural analysis to assess the structure condition and behavior, identify and quantify the current and predicted deterioration, and the development of appropriate management or rehabilitation options Every year Level 1 inspections on the Bribie Island Bridge are carried out unless it coincides with a Level 2 inspection that occurs every three years. A Level 3 inspection is triggered by any outcomes of the Level 2 inspection when and as required.

Over the past decade, Level 1 and 2 inspections have been conducted as follows: • • • •

18 December 2011 (Level 2) 19 November 2012 (Level 1) 13 November 2013 (Level 1) 12 October 2014 (Level 2)

19 October 2015 (Level 1) 19 October 2016 (Level 1) 8 October 2017 (Level 2) 10 October 2018 (Level 1)

The next Level 1 inspection is scheduled to be undertaken during October 2019.

Interestingly, the last Level 3 detailed assessment of the bridge was conducted in 1994 – 25 years ago! During this assessment, cracks identified in a small number of the bridge piles were investigated. Concrete core samples were taken and an inspection by divers of all underwater components was carried out.

This investigation determined that the cracks were limited to the exterior of the affected piles but potentially compromised their durability. Otherwise, all piles were determined to be structurally sound. In 1997 repairs were undertaken to these piles to restore the component durability and involved a reinforced concrete encasement of the existing piles.

Following the last underwater inspection in 2013, it was determined that five piles needed similar repairs, including the two that were previously repaired. This time a more modern and innovative pile protection method was adopted to restore the piles.

A Level 2 inspection was also carried out at that time and more recently, in 2017. No significant structural issues have been identified although these issues were identified: Aging elastomeric bearings (required action: monitor) Localized areas that require concrete patch repair - cross-girders and girders (required action: programmed for repair) • Silt build-up/scour due to the strong tidal currents (required action: monitor) I am told that the next underwater inspection of the Bridge is currently being arranged.

Government sale of land asset – old Joondoburri Conference Centre, Woorim Many will remember the once thriving and beautifully landscaped Joondoburri Conference Centre, located next to the Research Centre at Woorim. It was closed many years ago and since then has sat idle falling to rack and ruin. Recent decisions however were made by the Palaszczuk Labor Government to demolish what was left of the buildings and sell the land off and this has caused some discussion in our community, along with a few cynical comments of hypocrisy towards the Government who once said they would never sell a state asset. They were quick to put up the ‘For Sale’ sign and unload this 2.36 hectare parcel of land to the highest bidder.

Last year I was briefed on plans for this land by officers of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and at that time I set down a number of expectations on behalf of my community. Firstly, I said that I expect the land sale be designated for the sole purpose of developing the aquaculture industry on the Island (this was achieved). I also expect this to result in local job creation and local economic benefits. Secondly, I said that I expect all monies from the sale of this land to go back into projects for the Pumicestone Electorate as this is only fair.

With the tender process for the sale of this land now closed, I’ll be writing to the Premier and Minister to ensure my expectations, as set out during the abovementioned briefing, are fully achieved. Anything short of this is unacceptable and will be just another example of this Government cheating us.
