Dear Editor "How good is winter on Bribie? Sunny warm days and crisp cool mornings (can do without the winds though) winter in Queensland doesn't get any better. Perhaps the naysayers might contemplate our good fortune in living in a small piece of paradise.

There are plenty of pelicans on Bribie, noise from 11 or 12 days compared to 365 or 366 days - live and let live. Our lovely island has changed and grown since the early 1900's, since the days of the SS Koopa and since the bridge came to life in the 1960's - why is there now an expectation that Bribie should stagnate, stop growing and stay as is.

A 4 or 5 storey building will bring new people, jobs and new money into our economy. Change is the only Constant.

I grew up in North Queensland and went to school with aboriginal families.

I have a grandson who is one quarter aboriginal and we love him dearly. His father is a really good man who works hard in his own business and who is easy going and a great father and husband. He does take the time to teach the little fellow his cultural roots. I agree totally with all of the points Cranky

Welcome to issue 41, in this issue we have some great articles on senior’s week in our community and issues that affect all of us.

I probably keep saying this and nagging readers; however, it is one of the most important issues in our community which is supporting our local businesses. The LOCAL News will be working closely with our politicians to see how we can all work together and come up with a strategy to ensure we do support our local businesses. If you wish to have some input, can I suggest you join the local Bribie Island Chamber of Commerce.

I urge everyone to shop local and support our businesses, it helps create jobs in our region and it’s the local community that really can make a difference here. Don’t shop online, you can purchase anything you need right here!

On another note, the fires on Bribie Island have been fierce and have also killed a lot of our wildlife. In the next issue of the LOCAL News we will be doing a full story on how the fire started and how did it get out of hand so quickly.

That is what the aboriginal activists (especially the hat wearing ones) want and yet they want more. Ordinary dentists and other health professionals are not good enough for them – they have to have their own. This is just one example. $12billion just on the aboriginal industry is scandalous. And Cranky is correct – who is managing and accounting for all of this money?

I wrote to the PM just after the election regarding Ken Wyatt’s paper on the Makarrata Commission he proposes.

Is he kidding? He had been working on that idea for 6-8 months before the election. Ken Wyatt wrote a letter to me in reply. Inter alia, he said in one part “In your letter, you referred to the draft legislative model of the Makarrata Commission. The draft model is one option that could be considered as part of the co-design process the Australian Government has announced. This model is not the only option and is not Government policy. It is crucial that we come together to find a way forward that everyone can agree to. That is why the Government allocated $7.3 million for co-design of models to improve local and regional decision-making and develop options for constitutional recognition. There needs to be extensive consultation with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Australians to define a Voice and consider options for constitutional recognition”. More bloody money. Grrr. And, there is that word – Voice. I intend to write back to him.

KEEPING OUR COMMUNITY SAFE Over the last few weeks locals have raised a number of concerns with me about hooning and vandalism occurring in parts of the electorate.

During these discussions it has become clear that many residents don’t report suspected crimes/illegal activity to the police. Instead it appears locals may be using social media to vent concerns and alert our community to what is occurring.

Whilst informing the community is commendable, it is of the utmost importance to report any suspected crime to police so they can take the necessary action in responding.

Our police don’t necessarily monitor all Facebook community pages and unless they know they can’t act.

The Liberal and Nationals’ Government has committed $150,000 to fund up to 20 local community infrastructure projects across the electorate of Longman.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said projects would be funded as part of a $22.65 million investment nationwide under Round 5 of the Stronger Communities Programme.

“These investments in vital local infrastructure for the people of Longman are the sort of projects that bring our communities together, strengthen social connections, build community participation and create vibrant and viable communities into the future,” Mr Young said.

2019 marks 22 years in business for Sunshine Coast favourite, Beefy’s.

In this month’s Close Encounters Story, I ventured into the home of Debbie (Deb) and Peter (Gillo) Gillett, parents of Broncos Superstar Second Rower, Matt Gillett. Despite both Deb and Gillo growing up in Lismore and Macksville, NSW respectfully – they have lived on Bribie Island for more than 27 years with their three boys, Luke (26), Matt (31) and Scott (34) – well the boys mostly live in close proximity. To put this into perspective, Matt was born in Macksville, NSW and was moved to Bribie Island when he was a 3-year-old.

I figured the best way to find out about raising boys and how one of three boys ended up playing professional league for the Broncos is to meet Deb. I also jumped onto the Brisbane Broncos Website to review the 197 plus game history of Matt Gillett.

This story is mostly about a mum’s journey and her drive to make things happen for herself and her family. Gillo will join Deb and I later in the story. I was met by Deb at their home on Bribie Island and taken through multiple corridors past the kitchen into the rear entertainment area. Deb was enjoying a late afternoon beer as she walked me out through the back yard and towards the rear fence to show-off a new large caravan. I would have accepted the offer of a beer if I hadn’t just consumed a bucket of Ice Latte from the local

A bit about Matt Gillett - Since his debut at the age of 21 against the Cowboys in March 2010, Matt Gillette has achieved just about everything including representing Australia and the Qld State of Origin. Matt played in one the most memorable all Queensland NRL Grand Finals in 2015 when the Broncos lost by one point to a Johnathon Thurston Golden Boot. At 31 Matt is fit and ready to tackle his 10th year with the Broncos – to achieve the illusive Grand Final win in 2020.

“My last postcard that I put into my album once we returned to NSW from our trip around Australia was of Bribie Island and that’s where we ended up.” years where Deb was able to master the art of living, working, counting cash, serving food and socializing amongst a bustling rural community – this was the late 1970’s. Deb said, “I had a lot of good times around the hotel. On many occasions, I would invite my country friends to stay and we would go up to the roof above the 42 rooms and sunbake. We pretended that we were at the beach. I had a bit of a set-back at 16 when it was discovered that my lower back needed to be fused due to the serious risk of permanent spinal cord damage. This was a tough few

Deb describes Gillo as a workaholic and looks forward to his retirement, although I am informed that their next caravan adventure can be taken using long-service leave. You certainly do not look at Gillo and think ‘retirement.’ Gillo appears to be a respectful character – calmly spoken – a warm and considered man. He certainly has an educated view on sport and its’ positive impact on children. When talking about raising boys, Gillo says, “Our families were always involved with helping local clubs particularly within Rugby League in Macksville. Even though I was raised as a Rugby League player and surfer, our boys initially played soccer at the local Bribie Club. I felt that soccer was not as brutal on young bodies as League and I also felt that soccer really improved your peripheral vision and understanding of the game. We were very involved in the soccer club. I was coach and Deb was involved in the committees. The boys all played but as soon as the game was over, the boys would head across with their mates to kick the footy. We were very relaxed about what the boys played as long as they were developing friendships and team skills, we were happy. It wasn’t until the age of 11 that

I am told that the Rugby League and Soccer Fields are in close proximity so Deb, Gillo and the boys just packed their gear, changed the ball shape and joined the Bribie Island Warringal’s Rugby League Club. Gillo was at home here because he loved coaching league and his whole family came from a Rugby League Base.

Coffee Club. Deb told me that they were gearing for another getaway in their new van. I even had the opportunity of inspecting the caravan – its bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and dining room – it’s a large impressive home on wheels – I might suggest an Airbnb option thanks Deb for the tour.

We sat together on the back deck to talk life, boys and Deb’s strategy for developing her grandson (Matt’s young boy) into a famous musician. Deb is a communicator, storyteller, prankster, kind soul and thrives in social environments. She was raised and schooled in Lismore, a North Eastern NSW Town of approximately 27,000 people. Her mum and dad operated The Gollan Hotel in Lismore for many

years because I had to wear a full body jacket to protect the surgery,” she said.

“The best part of my teenage years was getting my car license and regularly heading to Lennox Head, a seaside village in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. We had a family caravan beside the surf beach at Lennox Head so I could tan my bod and check out the spunky surfers – They were the days. I must confess to have removed the body jacket in order to look great at the beach and maintain my tan,” Deb and Gillo met at a Pink Floyd Concert in Sydney (1979) – it was clearly a bonus that Gillo was a longhaired surfer from Macksville and no doubt had the ‘spunk factor’ in Deb’s eyes. They have been together for about 40 years which is probably testament to their complimentary personalities and country upbringing. When I asked Deb to define success amongst her boys, Deb says that each of the boys have been successful in living true to

themselves and their family. She said, “We are all born with a gift, it is how we choose to apply our gift and where your support and nurturing comes from. We are a strong family. My boys love their Island Home and we have rolled with the needs of our children. As with most parents, we would do anything to help our boys. I have always said that if you are lucky enough to have children, you need to run with them and lead the way to adulthood. When I was a 16-year-old girl, I was told that I will never be able to have children – it was tough, but we had three.” As crazy as it sounds, Gillo and Deb took an opportunity to travel around Australia when Matt was about 18 months and Luke was 4. Deb said, “It was a huge adventure made possible by a redundancy payout to Gillo. The release of the first disposable nappy prior to our Australian Tour was an absolute bonus.” You can now see the link between the new caravan in the back yard and the history of travel and

When you talk to Deb about the differences in abilities and personalities, it is obvious that Deb and Gillo knew that Matt had a slightly different gift and opportunity to advance into the professional game of Rugby League.

Deb said, “As with all parents, you work double shifts and work with your husband to assist your family.

outstanding and he has maintained a good work ethic and lived according to his own moral compass which hopefully Gillo and I developed with our boys.

The important thing in life is to be generous and happy and never expect a free ride – sometimes people will reward you and say, thank you.�

These days Deb works as a volunteer at the Bribie Island Neighbor House looking after the homeless community and people in need. As Deb was talking about the challenges faced within this volunteer role, you could see that this is what Deb does best in a community - helping people – finding solutions, negotiating and never giving up.

I didn’t mention Deb’s strategy to develop her grandson into a famous musician away from footy. The idea is to surround him with musical instruments and less footballs. Deb tells me that Matt’s 5-year-old daughter who was born on the same day as Matt may be a great Footy Player – watch this space.

A chilling addiction

Community year’s with those taken just a few years ago confirms this.

Antarctica has a rich history of extraordinary human endurance.

Perhaps the most amazing example was the journey of Ernest Shackleton’s party in 1914-1917. After their ship was

almost entirely underwater. The beach has disappeared and there were far fewer penguins.

With him on the ship were several highly experienced scientists who have been studying the status of birds in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions

even further south and further from their former feeding grounds along the coast. The East Antarctica region, where winter temperatures can plunge to around -90°C, is getting cooler. This will cause more powerful temperature gradients, boosting the already extreme winds to further complicate the already complex systems near the poles, systems that have a strong influence on our weather patterns.

It’s amazing how many people have asked him “Did you see any polar bears?” Polar bears only live in the Arctic, though that’s no longer guaranteed. Greenland is melting.

Fast. Over 250 billion tonnes of its ice melted in the past ten years and, on Arctic’s dwindling pack ice, the bears can’t hunt their food with the ease of past times. Many are starving, especially their young. In the past month dozens of lightning strikes have been recorded near the North Pole as the area warms up. About 2 billion tonnes of Greenland’s ice melted on one day in mid-June. That meltwater flows into the ocean.

Climate change isn’t something to “believe in”. It’s measurable. Its effects are visible. It’s hard to ignore, especially if you’re a penguin or polar bear—or

My partner has a chilling addiction called ‘Antarctica’. Over the past twelve years he’s visited the continent and nearby islands four times. One voyage was into the southernmost parts of the Ross Sea; the others were to the Antarctic Peninsula (the part that points towards South America) and the remote island of South Georgia. He returned from each voyage with a few thousand photos of happy penguins, cheeky seal pups, incredibly rugged landscapes and mountainous seas studded with whales and icebergs.

It’s interesting to compare his early photos to places he’s revisited, especially the glaciers. Comparing this

crushed by ice in the Weddell Sea he led his 27 crew across the frozen sea.

They then sailed in three small boats to Elephant Island where all but six camped at Point Wild for months on a tiny, unprotected “beach” that jutted out from the cliffs. Shackleton and five others sailed a six-metre boat across 1300 km of one of the wildest oceans on the planet to South Georgia, the only inhabited place they could possibly reach to find help. During a 2013 visit to Elephant Island my partner was able to wander around that beach and the low rocky peninsula that juts out from it, a home to hundreds of chinstrap penguins. This year, again at low tide, it was impossible: the peninsula was

Seniors Week Talks

As part of National Seniors Week a seminar was held on Thursday, 22nd August between 9.30 am and 12.00 pm at the Bribie Island RSL. Four guest speakers, organised by the Moreton Bay Domestic Violence Systems Coordination (Mercy Community), provided information for seniors on a variety of topics covering financial selfcare, healthy relationships, emotional self-care and physical self-care.

The main draw was the final guest speaker Noel Whittaker AM, financial wizard and international bestselling author of Making Money Made Simple, as well as other books. Mr Whittaker gave tips for those attending on retirement and finances, discussing good investments, pensions and his 20 commandments of wealth for retirees.

Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young MP discussed the importance for the older population to be aware of electronic bullying as the first speaker for the event. Mr Young provided booklets for those attending to take home; The Little Black Book of Scams and My Guide: Protect Yourself in 8 steps.

Sonia Colvin, founder of Hairdressers with Hearts (HWH), and Estrella from Centre Against Domestic Abuse (CADA) also spoke during the event.

During her presentation on Elder Abuse in informal care, Estrella from CADA emphasized the signs of abuse aren’t always clear and if you are uncertain of something to call CADA or someone you trust, like a social worker.

Those attending also received raffle tickets for the drawing of several lucky door prizes. There was also a range of informational pamphlets available to take home from CADA and HWH.

A Business Tool Everyone Needs

A strategic plan is a business tool that every business should have. Sadly, not that many do and there is a myriad of reasons why they don’t with the biggest two being:

much turnover you need in order to make that profit. Be clear on the $$ amount that would equate achieving that goal. For instance, having 10 new customers at $5000 each is not the same as having a goal of $50,000.

1) Cost factor – it can be prohibitive for a small business to engage a consultant or facilitator to assist with the development.

2) Missing the point about what a strategic plan really does for a business.

A good strategic plan is not a large and boring document. It’s user-friendly and simple to read. The reason it works is that it lays out your pathway. Your pathway needs to be measurable, achievable and progressive.

Think of it as your MAP to success.

Your personal map that will guide you on which opportunities and roads to follow to reach your goal. It should be a tool that you regularly refer to because it shows you WHERE you are going.

When you use your GPS to navigate yourself to a spot, you put in a precise address. The directions are then clear and easy to follow. If you just put in the suburb you could end up quite some distance away from your intended destination.

It’s the same with your strategic

plan. Unless you have the direction clearly written down it is pretty much impossible to tell if things are on track.

If you don’t know exactly where you are going, you will never know when you have arrived. This then leads to feelings of discontent with the way you are progressing.

Your MAP is also extremely valuable when you are tempted to go after a shiny object. You know something new comes onto the market, you hear a great pitch and decide immediately it might be perfect?

This is the time to look at your plan and check it aligns with your goals. If it does great! If not, then move on and keep your eyes firmly on the goals you have set.

Coeliac Disease, Gluten Intolerance, and What Can I Eat?

Common gastrointestinal symptoms include abdominal bloating and pain, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, heartburn, and nausea. Coeliac Disease is also associated with fatigue, weight loss, skin disorders, bone, joint and muscle pain, mouth ulcers, loss of tooth enamel, asthma, sinusitis, and an increased risk of anaemia, osteoporosis, menstrual issues, thyroid conditions, and depression.

Coeliac Disease occurs more commonly in genetically predisposed patients. You have a 10% increased risk if you have a first degree relative affected. Incidence of coeliac disease & gluten intolerance is slightly higher in females than in males. It is also more common in those with Western European ancestry, and is rare in Asians and African populations.

Testing for Coeliac Disease can involve IgG, IgA, biopsy (done via endoscopy or colonoscopy) and gene testing.

Non Coeliac Gluten Sensitivity, or Gluten Intolerance, can have many of the same symptoms but does not involve the immune response.

Coeliac Disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten, which is a combination of two proteins found in wheat, rye, and barley. It is an autoimmune disease, which is not limited to gastrointestinal symptoms.

The immune response elicited by the gluten causes inflammation to the intestinal wall and flattens the intestinal villi, reducing the surface area where we absorb many nutrients from our food. This also affects the ability to digest nutrients and can lead to nutrient depletion resulting in many deficiencies, and also inhibits the ability to produce enzymes essential for digestion, including lactase. This is why it is very common to have a dairy intolerance also when you have a gluten intolerance.

Look for gluten free breads (which are so much more palatable than they used to be), gluten free cereals, biscuits, cakes etc. Pastas made on quinoa, corn, rice, as well as rice thins, corn thins, rice crackers etc.

Ahhhh but what else is lurking on the horizon??? Christmas!

Gasp! Yes, in about 16 weeks that big day of gluttony and slothlyness arrives. And because it is doesn’t take long for spring to become Christmas, every year we hold our Spring into Summer 12 week challenge, to ensure our clients health, fitness and happiness is well and truly organised before the stressful and overloaded holiday season arrives. Unfortunately soon annoying adverts will bombard us showing Christmas as a fun family time, while insisting that our Christmas trees are decorated with colour co-ordinated decorations, perfectly matching our brand new lounge suites, dinner sets and table mats that we are told we must buy before those judgemental relatives arrive.

This pressure for perfection, strangely enough (NOT!) causes many to spend Christmas full of stress and worry… So how will our 12 week challenge, that finishes on the 1st of December, help you survive the trials and tribulations of Christmas and

New Year? Really? Do I have to go through all this again? I mean to say, if you have read any of my previous ramblings you should be able to recite this off by heart……. By exercising regularly and eating healthy real food YOU WILL DEFINITELY be happier, healthier, more confident, stronger, fitter and feel down right fabulous. The benefits of completing a 12 week challenge in the time running up to Christmas are the same as above but there are so many more reasons to do this. The main one is that when you participate in a 12 Week Challenge you are focusing on reaching YOUR goal in exactly 12 weeks. You won’t be vaguely thinking about a vague idea of losing a vague amount of weight, becoming vaguely fitter and vaguely healthier in a vague time. Not sometime soon, one day, when the moon is in the seventh house…. In Exactly 12 Weeks from the day you start you will be there. Our challenges are not about flogging yourself and definitely not about starving! Most challengers complain about how MUCH food they have to eat. You are challenged to reach YOUR Goals and change YOUR lifestyle

Senior Gentle Exercises With A Ball (or cushion) Before You Start

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself.

If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises to the right are done using a small light ball or a Cushion Take each exercise slowly and carefully If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference.

Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

BALL TRICEP EXTENSIONS

Use a stable chair for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit tall in your chair and raise the ball straight above your head Keeping your arms up, bend your elbows as you lower the ball behind your head.

Then slowly raise the ball until it’s back to its original position above your head Only do as many as you feel comfortable doing up to 10. Rest

BALL LEG SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall and keep your feet comfortable apart Place the ball or pillow between your knees Using your knees, squeeze the ball for 6 seconds and then slowly release (but don’t let the ball fall).

Repeat slowly, only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

BALL BACK REACH

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Slowly stretch your arms forward to move the ball away from you like you are handing the ball to someone. You will feel a stretch across your upper back Return to the starting position. Repeat slowly reaching out only as many times as is comfortable for you doing up to 12. Rest

BALL ARM AND CHEST SQUEEZE

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Sit tall in your chair and hold the ball out in front of you. Hold the ball in front of your chest with your elbows pointed straight out. Squeeze the ball between your hands. Keep squeezing for about 6 seconds and then relax Repeat slowly only do as many squeezes as you feel comfortable doing up to 12. Rest

The amazing clients shown are real people from Bribie who decided to put themselves first for a short time and look after their health and fitness.

They have completed THEIR challenge, some working full time, running businesses, and taking part in all that life threw at them in 12 weeks, yes including birthdays and other celebrations. They kept consistently working on their goals and in a lot of cases their partners, families and friends changed their lifestyles too and now they all enjoy being fitter and healthier. And they are just the tip of our fitness iceberg. Other participants have continued to exercise with us and without us, moving more, eating healthier and enjoying a far more active and independent life because they challenged themselves to make a change. Remember that challenges are not just about weight loss! These clients and others have all gone on to take part in push up challenges, Bloody Long Walks, half marathons and more. They walk more, move more, their golf games have improved, their bowling has improved, and they feel great. But also believe me becoming healthier and fitter doesn’t have to be a challenge, and yes that was a play on words. By moving just a little more each day you will be surprised by the difference it can make to you whole world. Some of the comments I get from clients who attend our Heartbeats classes, our circuit classes and our one on one training, are about incontinence reducing and/or stopping, twinges in their backs disappearing, knees that now love to walk, and how much they miss a class when they miss a class! Anyway, it is now your choice. Join the challenge and feel amazing when you welcome Christmas feeling fabulous, strong, accomplished, stress free and ready to really enjoy your festive season or you can put off your health and fitness once again and wake up in 16 weeks feeling exhausted from a long year of frumpiness, flabbiness, and stress wishing you had taken that chance, spent just 1hour and 45mins each of those 12 weeks to look after your health and happiness.

All three ladies attend the Friday class of Heartbeats along with around 30 other participants.

Heartbeats classes are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Heartbeats are gentle exercise classes originally designed by the Australian Heart Foundation to be suitable for anyone who is looking to add a complete exercise class to their current activities or anyone who is not actively exercising who would like to start with a gentle class.

The classes, which have been running for approximately 8 years on Bribie, have chairs available for all participants if they are required.

Ernie-James Galon completed his Diploma of Dental Technology from TAFE Queensland in 2007. He further completed a Bachelor of Oral Health in Dental Technology (post-registration) at Griffith University in 2012. Ernie-James continued his education in prosthetic dentistry and completed a Master of Dental Prosthetics in 2013, where he was awarded, The School of Dentistry and Oral Health Clinical Award. His Masters research focused on the psychology of denture patients and it’s affect towards prognosis, diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

More recently (2015), Ernie-James has been involved within student learning, undertaking a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education at Griffith University. During his formal studies in higher education, he has been involved with the School of Dentistry and Oral Health as a Visiting Associate Lecturer in Dental Prosthetics. This includes, supervising postgraduate students during their clinical sessions, supervising both dental technology and dental science undergraduates during their technical laboratory sessions, lecturing clinical prosthetic theory, and exam moderation.

Currently, Ernie-James is completing a professional doctorate in Psychology.

As a practicing dental prosthetist, Ernie-James is a member of the Australian Dental Prosthetist Association (ADPA) Clinically, his primary focus is on patient care, understanding and education, delivering a detailed research and evidence based approach towards treatment planning and prosthetic dental care.

Water emergencies spark boat safety drive

Maritime Safety Queensland is appealing to boat users to take more safety precautions on the water in the wake of a series of fatalities and serious incidents across the state.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said a spate of marine incidents in recent weeks had demonstrated how quickly conditions could change on the water.

"In the past four weeks, we have seen the heartbreaking disappearance of a family of five in a boating incident in Torres Strait and more recently, the continuing search for two fishermen on a trip in Moreton Bay,” Mr Bailey said.

"Any death is one too many and tragically we have lost 11 Queenslanders this year on our waters.

"In the same period, there have been eight major incidents, including serious collisions on Moreton Bay and Manly Harbour, a close call for 11 passengers in a boat fire off the Gold Coast, and, just last week, a boat-grounding with three people on board off eastern Cape York.”

Each incident presented unique circumstances not necessarily linked with failed safety procedures, but Mr Bailey said the run of rescues showed skippers could not ignore their safety obligations.

"Simple but critical measures such as keeping a proper lookout, ensuring you have the correct safety equipment, staying under .05 and checking the weather can literally save lives,” Mr Bailey said.

"Maritime Safety Queensland

understands this and conducts extensive education and enforcement activities with Queensland Water Police and Queensland Boating and Fisheries patrols.

“Perhaps the most important message is ensuring there’s a lifejacket for everyone on board. All passengers should know where they are or be wearing them and know how to use them.

“It's just common sense to ensure everyone is wearing a properly fitting lifejacket whenever there is a heightened risk such as poor weather, boating alone or at night, or operating in busy shipping lanes.

“If you are going any distance off shore, check whether you are required to carry an EPIRB and make sure it’s properly registered with the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

“And always let someone such as your local volunteer rescue group, know when you’re leaving, your destination and when you’re due back.

“Check the weather before you leave and keep checking while you’re on the water.

“Be prepared for sudden unexpected weather changes and at the first sign of deteriorating weather make sure everyone on board is wearing a lifejacket if they haven’t already got one on.

“Have an alternative plan to reach shelter if you can’t get back to your usual mooring or boat ramp and ensure you have enough fuel to get there.

“But most importantly, if in doubt – don’t go out.

“You’re the skipper – you’re responsible.”

Mr Bailey said Maritime Safety Queensland staff would be pushing the safety message at one Australia's premier marine events, the Brisbane Boat Show, in Brisbane today.

The Next Gen Committee learned last week that we have received a RADF grant of $4700! So we are excited that with all this community and council support that this, our 3rd year of the Next Gen Art Prize will be our best yet!

We are also thrilled to have 3 more major sponsors to award their own special prizes, in addition to the judges choices. These are BIEPA with the $250 Recycled Materials Award, Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club with $1000 worth of free junior memberships to their Club, and Alisart with a $350 prize package from Beautifully Personalised Art Work as well as a free class with Alisart for every entrant! Cranky Lizard speaks of Drought…

Drought does not attack you like wildfire. Drought does not thunder along a dry riverbed smashing your flood gates into the next State. Drought does not howl at you in the night and rip your roof off whilst screeching like a banshee across your home paddock.

Drought is a shapeshifting python slowly crushing you into oblivion. It creeps onto you and you can be destroyed in a few, silent terrifying months.

And Australia is and has been, for millions of years, a continent bedevilled by drought. This is not some new demon unleashed upon the nation by climate change advocates. Those who make their living on the land in rural communities know that the climate is changing and has been doing so long before European arrivals and settlement.

Aboriginal people lived with drought and made their life work to the rhythms of drought, flood and fire. They heard the subtle language of the bush; watched native life change habits, saw the trees change their foliage and felt the moisture in the air change on the wind.

They could read and understand this natural language because their homes were the same homes as the creatures and the trees that were telling them the coming drought story.

Having heard and understood the songs the bush was singing to them – they moved on, they changed their rhythm of movement and hunting; they went to places they knew from their own stories which were safe and would enable them to survive the testing times to come.

Anyone who makes their living from agriculture in this land can hear those songs from the bush – if you listen and recognize the soft voices telling you what will happen – they are there and they speak to you!

Modern farming methods today are superbly efficient. Broadacre farming has reached a point where water is distributed in the “ JIT “ system – “ just in time “ for the crops to benefit, cotton, canola, sorghum and maize are managed in the most moisture efficient manner.

Stock grazing techniques have reached a point of efficiency through welldeveloped research programmes and pasture management which will ensure, with the intelligent application of these

techniques, that stock is distributed across the land evenly, disease is controlled and water points are accessible and maintained.

All of this works when the seasons roll on as they have done for hundreds of years. But when the seasons shift, the air dries up and static makes your wife’s hair stand on end – as well as your own!

You look to the horizon which normally delivers your weather and you see nothing but haze you must begin to look carefully around you and listen to the soft voices.

That is about the time that you have the first slight shudder of the ‘ yips ‘, you ask yourself is this the beginning of a period without rain? If so, what do you do?

Days come, when getting out of bed to face the dry, heartbreaking scenes that you know are there waiting for you, becomes a hard task.

The weeks roll into months and the sky remains clear, the air is dry and the leaves on eucalypts begin to turn sideways and crackle in the wind, the first sign of water stress. Pastures look tired and brown, some nutrient remains but that will be sucked out by the dry air in a very short time the remaining pasture will be grey. It is time to get the stock off and into the market, regardless of the fact that prices have collapsed because of the numbers of stock on the market. Everyone is getting their stock off and the cold hands of fear grab your spine, cold hands that will not let go!

Your mind turns to survival. You plan for reduced income. You plan for adjusting life in a harsh, unforgiving land that will demand all you have in your soul and more! You become your own enemy – you know generations before you survived this and you will be judged on how you handle this unrelenting pressure to keep your land, survive the drought and return to sensible life.

You move about your land, you see native animals numbers decline.

Billabongs have become dry holes, small nocturnal critters disappear and their absence is accompanied by more wild dogs than you have ever seen. Dogs looking to your breeding stock for food.

The land becomes barren, dust flies in your face you can taste it in your mouth.

Days come, when getting out of bed to face the dry, heartbreaking scenes that you know are there waiting for you, becomes a hard task. Commonsense tells you that you cannot change this, you just have to tough it out although your eyes keep turning to the weather direction looking for the first signs of the

balls of fluffy cumulus which will signal the return of moisture in the air.

Community meetings are held in town; hands are held out and enquiring eyes seek yours; looking for re-assurance, hoping, expecting to see strength and determination looking back. Some eyes will be down and defeated; discreet signals are sent and people move closer to the sad eyes. Quiet words, a hand on a shoulder, an offer to take the children for the weekend to get them off the place and away from the despair.

And despair it is. The python has well and truly taken hold and is slowly squeezing and crushing the life out of you, your family and your life.

You can fight a wildfire. You can sandbag a flood – but you cannot make it rain. You do what you have to do to keep the place alive. Stock is gone, except a few precious breeders which are mercilessly hunted by wild dogs and you gain vicarious pleasure by shooting the bloody things at night – at least it feels like you are doing something!

Government people come with news on the weather – not good! Government people come with offers of money – not good! You don’t want handouts, you just want bloody rain and you can’t have it.

Around you local town businesses begin to close, no trade brings them down.

Some banks help, all banks know the effects but some are better than others in knowing when to call you. People begin to drift away from the town – no work, no trade, no income – and you can see the life drain from the places that made you what you are.

You keep talking with the community and they keep talking to each other.

Comparisons are made about other drought times, 1937, 1951, 1984 and so it goes…

It is about this time that you stand on your quad bike, taking in the hazy horizon, seeing the brown, dry mess your place become and you shout into the sky, “ You will not beat me, I will see you gone and we shall live again on this land. “ You then head back to the house, hug your wife, get on the radio and invite the district to your place for a bloody drought bloody party! Crack open the last three bottles of red wine, put on a clean shirt and dare the drought python go for it…because you are going to win.

Rain comes, it always does. The land comes back to life and the rattled bones of the drought python are blown away by the wind which brings the rain.

You may ask how Cranky Lizard knows these things?

The answer to that is that experience is obvious.

Enjoy your days and pray for rain because the python has a good hold out West.

Mary Brown, Chair of Beachmere U3A said it was important to keep residents informed about the local U3A activities and encourage people to get involved in the many classes and workshops available throughout the term.

“We have some amazing classes and workshops – drawing, watercolour, mosaics and millinery – as well as some great ongoing classes – genealogy, machine quilting, beginner guitar and ukulele as well as Chair Yoga and Do-IN Gentle Exercise,” Mary said.

“Term Four starts early October and we are always looking for new Tutors to share their knowledge and experience. You need no formal qualifications just an interest and some knowledge you would like to share.”

Queensland Children’s Hospital Foundation are the real winners of the State of Origin Pie competition this Year

Children with certain types of respiratory illnesses require constant breathing support to prevent serious complications such as impaired brain function and developmental issues.

Some children must remain in the intensive care unit for 4-6 months on average for ongoing breathing support.

There was $21,061.00 raised

With this years donation they were able to purchase 1 x Trilogy Ventilator and 1 x A40 Ventilator.

Tougher penalties for unlawful animal activists

Animal activists who conduct protests unfairly targeting Queensland producers could face longer jail terms and bigger fines for creating a biosecurity risk under legislation introduced into State Parliament today.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the Agriculture and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2019 was introduced to stop animal activists jeopardising the rights and livelihoods of law-abiding farmers.

“Protesters could now face up to one year in jail for trespassing on farm land or be fined more than $60,000,” Mr Furner said.

“The Bill provides more effective protection for our hard-working agricultural industries following recent animal activist protests in south-eastern Queensland.

“Some protests by animal activists over the last 12 months have involved people invading farms and businesses and putting unfair pressure on law-abiding farm owners, managers and staff.

“Our farmers have a right to feel safe and protected from risks posed to themselves, their property and their livelihoods.

“Our community needs to be confident that human safety, animal welfare, biosecurity and food safety are not being compromised.”

Mr Furner said while the Palaszczuk Government supported the rights of individuals to protest lawfully in Queensland, those who unlawfully enter farming land with such disregard for the consequences would be met with a strong response.

“The Bill includes a package of amendments to the Summary Offences Act 2005, the Biosecurity Act 2014 and the Exhibited Animals Act 2015 to address unacceptable behaviour that poses risks to agricultural and related industries.

“This includes penalties for those unlawfully entering a food production facility, a feed lot and a live export facility, as well as a showground or sporting ground used for animals.

“The amendments in the Bill carefully balance the rights of those who wish to protest and the rights of those involved in relevant industries.”

“It shows how seriously the Palaszczuk Government takes any action which may pose risks to human safety, animal welfare, food safety, biosecurity or may cause economic losses for these businesses.”

The Morrison Government has paved the way for Australians with disability to lead more empowered lives through an investment of $100 million of funding in community grants.

the internet from our world and we don’t seem to be having too many big wins in driving drug pestilence from our doorsteps, but I reckon there are some things we could do that may start pushing the wheels in our direction.

[ I am not a trained Counsellor nor a Mental Health Professional, and I give no professional advice in these difficult matters. These comments are the result of a profound sense of concern for what is happening in our communities.]

I am advised, by a very reliable source, that six men, on average, take their lives, in Australia, every day.

That is 42 men each seven days. Dead by their own hand.

That is two thousand one hundred and eighty-four men per year removed from our society because they could not find a reason to live with us – or they were overwhelmed by the despair of their circumstances.

These are average figures and are spread across a broad spectrum of our society – age groups, geography, life circumstances and birth circumstances and, it may be that these figures are higher than noted above, because almost certainly some deaths will be unreported as suicide due to the difficulty surrounding that word.

Either way, it is a profoundly disturbing figure and demands some public attention – the data applied to females is much less then males, and one can ask why? The answer is evident and straightforward.

Females talk about their difficulties and seek help-conversely men do not talk about their problems and do not seek help.

Why is this so?

There is no straightforward answer. If there was, we would have found it and almost certainly applied it.

Commonsense leads your thoughts to the biology of males. Somewhere in this complex mix of genes and chromosomes, there may be an identifiable signal faintly flickering away – sending the coded answers – but that signal, if it indeed exists, is very well disguised.

The circumstances of my birth caused me to spend my teenage years in semirural Australia in the 1950s, surrounded by a large, tempestuous, reasonably well-known, entrepreneurial family.

I reckon I was lucky. Australia, during those years, was a wonderfully innocent place in which a young man could grow into his shoes. I remember my young life being full of big, silent, tanned skinned men who wore their shirts open at least three buttons down. They worked with their hands and brains in the sun, on the land and in small blacksmith shops they built. They were not angels, they used alcohol, and they could be violent – but they were all pretty much veterans from World War II, and they cared for each other, they really did!

And, they were all over the place. In the Police, on the farms, in the shops and

pubs, in the workshops, driving trucks, shoeing horses and in our homes. My arithmetic teacher in Grade Seven was a man who flew Lancaster Bombers over Europe, a dour, ruddy-faced Scotsman who, with one glance, could scare me rigid but, at the same time, would reach out touch me on the shoulder and tell me I was OK. I walked taller because of those gestures.

Public presentation of these men was that they were tough men who dealt with the worlds’ nonsense in their own way and in their own time. This impression, nonetheless, was a chimera – many of them were broken by the war, and they sought and found help within their world of mateship – the RSL. They looked out for each other; they would make phone calls on party lines during the evening; I know, I heard them, and I learnt that it was not weak or unmanly to seek help when the devils in your soul threaten to overwhelm you. It was a priceless lesson.

Later in my life, Vietnam and various pieces of Chinese metal and shrapnel invited into my life a dark rider on a pale horse. This horse walks alongside me at times, but I know what to do with him; I know how to kick him, and his red-eyed black dog mate back into the shadows from whence they came. I learnt how to do this from the men in the 1950’s: those supposedly tough, bronzed ANZACS. For reasons that are very difficult to understand, the business of men looking out for each other and being able to speak out with confidence about matters which bother them has been lost in today’s world. Perhaps it is the lack of a shared collective experience?

Maybe it is the lack of role models such as those available to me? Possibly the diminution of the influence of the Church in our societies? I don’t think there is one common factor, but it is apparent to me that mutual respect and shared experiences are positive forces for good in our community and it is as evident as a dunny in the desert that these are mostly missing from our national life.

The toxic presence of recreational drugs in our lives has much to do with the breakdown of the forces I mentioned above, along with the herd driven madness of the social media.

What to make of this?

I don’t suppose it is possible to remove

The first thing to do is to accept that this a severe problem blighting our lives.

The second thing to do is to publicly discuss these matters and to encourage, through various forums, and there are plenty of them in our communities, open and frank discussion about how anxiety and depression creep into all our lives and it is not weak to seek help especially for men of all ages and life experiences.

It is not for me to make lists of actions to be taken. I wrote earlier that these words were motivated by a profound sense of concern about the suicide rate of men in Australia. In taking these words into a public forum such as this, I hope that we can, collectively, draw back the curtain and look into the face of the dragon. In doing so, we may see that it is not such a fearsome beast and that its fires cannot burn you.

Organisations across Longman are encouraged to apply for the Individual Capacity Building grants to fund programs aimed at empowering people with disability to be independent and engage fully in social, economic and community life.

The grant will fund activities in the community over the next three years that benefit all Australians with disability, their carers and families.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said the grants were all about building connected and cohesive communities.

“These grants are about breaking down the barriers for people with disability in Longman and creating opportunities for them to connect, participate in and contribute to their community,” Mr Young said.

“It’s important for people with disability to be given opportunities to build their skills, develop their independence, explore new experiences, meet new people and attain and retain employment.

“This grant is a great way to achieve that.”

The grant round is now open and closes at 11pm on Monday, 30 September 2019.

The funding is part of the Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) program and the grants are targeted at Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPO) and Families Organisations (FO) and will fund grassroots programs that will build the capacity of individuals such as peer support, mentoring and skills-building, as well as activities to build organisational capacity including professional development, leadership training, coaching, strategic and business planning.

The Bribie Island Seniors Living Expo is a one day event, held annually as part of National Seniors Week. It provides valuable information not just to senior members of the community but also to carers, families and those approaching retirement.

This year’s expo held on Friday, August 23rd featured 47 stalls covering a variety of local businesses, support services and local politicians.

Held at the Bribie Respite and Support Services Inc. Bribie Community Hall for the fourth year, the annual exposition has been going for 15 or so years and continues to have a positive turn out.

Attendees were able to talk with Federal Member for Longman Terry Young, Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP and Moreton Bay Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige one on one.

Hospice service providers, physiotherapists, other support services and funeral services all had stalls in the expo to provide attendees with information booklets, free goodies and a sugary treat.

Cotterill Avenue, First Avenue, Goodwin Drive, Sunderland Drive and Whitepatch Esplanade have all had eye-catching new wildlife signs installed.

These new signs serve as a warning to drivers to keep an eye out for our native wildlife which may be crossing the roads.

On July 17th BIEPA sent a letter to MBRC Councillor for Division 1, Brooke Savige, requesting more signage to make motorist aware of wildlife.

A spokesperson for BIEPA said “BIEPA has been aware for some time now, through reports from our Members and many other concerned residents, that there has been an increase in reports of wildlife, in particular kangaroos and wallabies, being struck by vehicles on Bribie’s roads. This is probably caused by the recent spell of very dry weather, which tends to encourage animals onto the roadsides, and also the considerable increase in traffic, in particular along the top stretch of Cotterill Avenue by the National Park. This street has seen the number of vehicles using it multiply since the development of new highdensity residential areas behind the Shopping Centre.

We had urged that the Council arrange for prominent signage on the roads where most of these extremely distressing incidents were occurring and are very pleased to see that many eye-catching, photographic signs have been installed recently on Cotterill Avenue, First Avenue,

Goodwin Drive, Sunderland Drive and Whitepatch Esplanade. Additional stencilled signage is now on the road on Whitepatch Esplanade and we understand that this will be applied in other areas also.”

Councillor Brooke Savige responded to these local concerns by bringing up the need for additional signage in Council which has resulted in the new signs.

“We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful part of the world but we need to be mindful that we share this with our native wildlife and therefore must do all we can to protect them. Additional signage options will be considered in the long term but for now I encourage drivers to be aware of our native wildlife and to show particular care when driving at dawn and dusk.” Said Councillor Savige.

It is still too early to say if the signage will reduce accidents but BIEPA is hopeful it will help.

“We will, of course, continue to follow the situation closely to see if these signs do result in a sharp reduction in these incidents and also if there are other areas in which signage could be installed. Other measures such as reviewing the speed limits in some areas, or at certain times, could also be considered.

BIEPA welcomes the installation of these signs and appreciates the efforts of the Council, and in particular our Councillor Brooke Savige, in bringing this about. We hope that these measures will indeed contribute to ensuring that Bribe Island is a Sanctuary for our wildlife, as announced on the sign at the entrance to the Island.” The BIEPA spokesperson said.

Road Closure Clarification at Bellara

On Friday, July 26th the Queensland Government Gazette contained a notification of a proposed permanent road closure for part of Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bribie Island.

“An area of about 9100 m2 being part of Sylvan Beach Esplanade (locality of Bellara) and shown as road proposed to be permanently closed on Drawing 18/5944.

(2019/005944)” Is the exact wording used in the gazette.

As Sylvan Beach Esplanade is a council road, we reached out to Moreton Bay Regional Council, Councillor for Division One, Brooke Savige for comment.

Brooke Savige was able to clarify that in fact none of the actual road is being closed despite how the notice from the gazette reads.

“It is a bit of a strange one but some of the parkland at Crest Park was actually built on road reserve. Now that it is built and established as parkland we are just looking at removing the road reserve and having it properly identified as parkland to reflect the current use.” She said.

The application for the proposed road closure is still open for objections, which must be submitted to the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy (DNRME) by September 5th 2019.

Off-the-plan buyers urged to take caution, following RALAN collapse

Following the recent collapse of property developer Ralan Group, Queensland’s peak real estate industry body, the REIQ, is reminding potential buyers of the unique risks associated with off-the-plan contracts, which in the Ralan case may result in the loss of the initial deposits for hundreds of purchasers.

While deposits are often kept in a separate trust account, some purchasers elected to release their deposits through a side agreement, allowing Ralan Group to use the funds as unsecured loans, reducing the likelihood of any refunds.

“It’s been reported that around 1100 people had entered into contracts for off-the-plan homes at Ruby Collection on the Gold Coast,” said REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella.

“It would be heartbreaking for that many people to lose not only the possibility of the home or investment they had purchased, but also lose their deposits.

“This is a reminder of the importance of seeing legal advice and undertaking appropriate due diligence when making these types of purchases.

“When you enter into an off-the-plan contract, you must remember that it is quite different to purchasing an established property and comes with its own set of unique risks.

“Contracts often include flexibility for the developer to make changes to the floors plan and/or other features within the dwelling.”

Ms Mercorella said while contracts included a guide to ongoing fees, these were often subject to change.

“Ultimately, the developer may never proceed with the build for a number of possible reasons, such as if pre-sales aren’t met, or, in extreme situations such as the Ralan case, the developer could fall into administration.”

Of course, there are many advantages to buying off the plan, such as saving on stamp duty costs, and the ability to purchase at the current value, which may increase post-completion.

“Buyers are also able to get involved with selecting finishings and other design elements.”

“Despite the many benefits though, the Ralan Group collapse does highlight the need for additional caution when entering into this type of contract,” said Ms Mercorella.

“Enter with your eyes wide open.

Understand the contract – seeking legal advice is of paramount importance to ensure you are protected to the maximum degree possible.”

Scammers are always in search of new victims, and Queenslanders are being warned not to become complacent.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said Scams Awareness Week, which starts tomorrow, highlighted the need for the public to ask themselves if they are ‘Too smart to be scammed?’

“According to the Scams Awareness Network, many Australians confidently believe they could spot a scam, and would know what to do if they were targeted,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Unfortunately, though, the amount of money lost to scams is increasing from year to year.

“Australians lost almost half a billion dollars to scammers last year, according to a report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

“Total combined losses reported to the ACCC and other government agencies exceeded $489 million, which was $149 million more than in 2017.

“And as the ACCC pointed out, these record losses were only part of the picture as not everyone who suffers a loss to a scammer reports it to authorities.”

Mrs D’Ath said scammers were using increasingly sophisticated tactics to widen the net and steal people’s money.

“While people may know to ignore a poorly spelt email from a Nigerian prince offering you millions of dollars, the current scams we are seeing involve professional-looking emails and websites, and very convincing phone calls and texts,” she said.

The scams that claimed the most money from victims in 2018 were investment scams and romance scams, with business email scams quickly catching up.

In one recent case, an Ipswich woman and her husband were scammed $22,000 when they transferred a payment for home renovations to what they thought was their builder’s bank account.

Unbeknown to them, the woman’s email account had been hacked and the builder’s invoice intercepted. In the space of two hours, the hacker had changed the BSB and account numbers on the invoice.

The scam came to light when four days later the builder enquired about when he could expect payment. Against all odds, the scammer was caught out through bank surveillance when he continued to operate the account where the money had been sent, and the couple’s $22,000 was recovered.

Mrs D’Ath said there were some simple steps Queenslanders could take to avoid being ripped off.

“Although scammers have new tricks, old-fashioned common sense is the best defence,” she said.

“Take some time to stop and think before you hand money over to a stranger. A couple of minutes’ research and talking to a trusted friend can make all the difference.”

A mobile phone scam now circulating in Brisbane involves a bogus Australia Post message, which advises recipients of a delivery which requires a signature.

The initial message is quickly followed by a second malicious text which advises the package has been detained and provides a web link for more information. If the recipient clicks on that link they are asked for money and their bank details to retrieve the package.

Australia Post has issued an urgent alert advising people the SMS has not come from them and is a phishing scam.

Mrs D’Ath said to avoid business email scams where a hacker gained access to an email account and sent false requests for money or falsely instructed a change of bank details, the Office of Fair Trading advised businesses to implement a ‘two-factor check’ in their day-to-day procedures.

“Individuals can use this safeguard too. For example, if you receive an email that says it’s from your bank or telecommunications company, close the email and do your own internet search for the contact details of the business to verify them.

“Don’t click on links or make calls to phone numbers in the email itself, because these could be fake.

“It’s also really important to take the time to warn your family and friends about potential scams, as money lost to scammers based overseas is almost impossible to recover.

“Scams target people of all backgrounds, ages and income levels, so all of us are potentially vulnerable at some time,” Mrs D’Ath said.

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young said ‘managed motorway’ technology would bust congestion and reduce travel times on the critical section of the highway.

“Installing electronic freeway management technology will improve traffic flow and motorist safety, particularly during busy peak periods,” Mr Young said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said no matter where you live, the Australian Government wants to get you home sooner and safer.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said this technology will improve the capacity and safety of the Bruce Highway for all road users and reduce congestion and travel times.

“These development phase works are expected to be completed in early 2020, following which the introduction of ‘managed motorway’ technology will get underway,” Mr Bailey said.

The project involves installing ‘managed motorway’ technology such as variable speed limit signs, entry ramp signalling, traffic monitoring cameras, digital message signs providing live updates on traffic conditions and delays, along with signs advising drivers of lane and speed restrictions.

Gateway Motorway to Caloundra Road Interchange project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $84 million and the Queensland Government committing $21 million.

Variety is the Spice of Life - A New Member’s Impression of Rotary

Talking to a good friend of mine, I was surprised when he asked if I had ever considered joining Bribie’s Rotary Club. The idea had never crossed my mind. Wasn’t it a club for businessmen; didn’t they only allow one member of each profession; how would a woman be received?

I imagined that the organisation would be incredibly stuffy and not my cup of tea at all. However my friend suggested I should investigate further and assured me that if I joined, I would find myself involved in a variety of activities, and that I would have lots of fun and meet new people. So, I decided to investigate further using my trusty computer.

I found they met early on a Thursday evening at one of the local pubs, where one could order a drink and a meal before the meeting began. Prior to my first meeting I had a friendly visit from Anne Matthews who told me more about the Club and also arranged for someone to pick me up before the first meeting so I did not have to walk in “cold”.

This was very much appreciated and typical of the warmth shown to prospective new members.

I began by attending a Dinner involving several Papua New Guinea Clubs and other local Rotary Clubs. The evening was lively and diverse and reinforced for me the international nature of Rotary.

The tablemats were colourful and informative about Rotary’s various areas of service including Ending Polio

The next meeting I attended was a visit to the Aqua-culture Centre on the Island which I found particularly interesting, taking me back to my student days. The Centre was involved in growing Cobia, a huge fish which is good for the table and extremely fast growing. A break for Easter followed, and then a meeting at the Bribie Island Pub where I learned the normal proceedings of the club including the mysteries of heads and tails.

The following week, yet another Dinner at the Pacific Harbour Golf and Country Club, The Pride of Workmanship Award Dinner, where recognition was given to various individuals who had given outstanding service to the community.

Next, I was asked for a “get-to-know-you”

coffee with Greg and Jeff, which proved to be not too intimidating!

The following meetings included talks about Recycling Spectacles and the Oysters of Pumicestone Passage. Talk about Variety! By this time I had decided Rotary was definitely for me and was

one recent program that has been introduced to the public by the Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC). The program is called “The Schoolwide Waste Management Program” and aims to clean up the pollution in multiple places, including our beautiful Bribie Island and surrounding suburbs. Although Bribie may seem like a wonderful place, just below the surface it is slowly drowning in copious amounts of litter.

You may be wondering, who is the cause of this catastrophe? The disastrous problem is unfortunately being caused by us, the residents of Bribie Island.

More specifically, school age youths are a major contributor as they aren’t always educated correctly on waste management so tend to worry less about the impact their behaviours are having.

Litter, rubbish and waste are all words we hear on the news, in newspapers or even by the feared citizens of the public. You may wonder, what do they have to fear, but deep down, the real question is, what isn’t there to fear?

There is solid proof that pollution is an increasing issue, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping. But what started all this? People carelessly litter, they throw waste onto the floor, disregarding the environment around them, but unfortunately that waste then travels to the nearest ocean and eventually makes its way into sea animals’ digestive systems. More and more animals are dying, suffocating on plastic, leading to possible extinctions and the destruction of ecosystems.

Bribie Island High School is leading the way in making a change in this area. We are introducing the “Waste Warriors” program at the High School as part of the MBRC initiative. It is a way to educate youth on the importance of keeping our oceans clean and providing the opportunity for students to take responsibility for and contribute to helping clean their environment.

Through this program we will be able to decrease litter, and see an improvement for our amazing island.

There are people and groups on the island who dedicate time and effort to this problem, but more needs to be done. We need to come together and support these initiatives. Knowing that we have the opportunity to change our behaviours through the “Waste Warrior” program is the first step. Keep our island a paradise.

Every kid needs a drone!

Drones are the technology that has seen a rapid rise in popularity over the past five years. We are now at a point where a drone can be purchased for under $200, with many features that were once only available at a higher price range.

The value of drones has moved beyond that of purely entertainment, with the educational usage increasing ten-fold.

Child users can now code drones using simple language to do simple things, however through powerful coding language, drones cane be used to learn how to explore the world. Built in cameras for aerial photography and video, they are other valuable tools to enhance learning and allow people to experience worlds beyond their own, from angles not previously being able to be explored. It is this education aspect that has both parents and schools alike keen to invest.

The world of drone purchasing can be confusing for parents to navigate, however, there are a number of different price point options that are worth exploring.

The Tello drone, developed by DJI and Ryze in March 2018, can be purchased for $200 and offer children hours of fun

and learning discovery, from developing code to allow analysis of the world, free flight, learning the rules of drone flight, and how to operate the coding environment.

At the same price point, the Parrot Mambo Fly can be programmed with Tynker, a mobile program that allows simple manipulation and use of the drone. However, being an older model, there are some features included in the Tello that are not included in this model. This includes a FPV (First Person View) camera, which needs to be purchased as an add on module that attaches to the top of the drone, as well as the addition of a pea shooter or a grabber attachment used for more complex tasks.

For those parents wanting to spend a bit more money, purchasing the Parrot Bebop 2 for approximately $500 dollars still represents good value for money. It comes with a built-in FPV camera and a largely increased battery life which is a great upgrade for any kids wanting to break into the world of drones and try their hand at this new technology.

At the end of the day, whichever drone you choose will add a new element of fun to your child’s life and will equip them with essential ICT skills to broaden their skills and knowledge.

How Green is your sward?

In last month’s article, I commented on how unusual it was for us to get so much constant heavy rainfall in June this year at the beginning of winter. I also mentioned how green most lawns were looking in the local districts accordingly- but how things change in a blink of an eye!

Our typical subtropical winter weather has been true to form in August and as a result, most soils are drying out again with all the fine-sunny, cool but windy days about of late. And for those of you with irrigation, it’s a pleasure to see the results of a well hydrated sward among these rather dry conditions. Unfortunately, as the grass slows its growth in winter, the weeds seem to flourish prolifically as the environmental conditions tend to favour them as they try and outcompete the turf grass for growth and space, but now spring is here, it’s time to put an action plan in place!

I have been raving on about adding organic matter all year to assist in moisture retention in soils and turf grasses, but this is can be quite tricky to manage once our soils start to show signs dehydration. Prevention can be easier than the cure- that’s for sure, but if your favourite sward of green has weeds invading through, there is a good chance it could be clumps of Winter grass, Bindi, flat weeds- (false dandelion) or creeping Oxalis, to only name a few, as these all seem to be flourishing locally at present. Problems can arise when trying to treat the weed infestation once your turf is already stressed and the soil has lost the ability to retain moisture. There isn’t much buffer capacity either, (buffer capacity- is the term referred to describe the soils ability to withstand or absorb environmental stresses). Another situational problem arises when trying to control lawn weeds with chemicals to eradicate them, is that applying chemicals or fertilisers is not recommended when the lawns are already suffering from moisture stress which can sometimes do more harm than good. This can be a double-edged sword when considering a treatment plan!

The well-nourished - Sward of Green!

So the irony is; if your lawns roots have access to ample organic matter, you will have less weeds, less moisture stress and less dry patches accordingly. It all comes down to the soil microorganism populations in the soil profile and nourishing the little critters with organic substances such as composted manures year-round to sustain them. This will essentially build a soil profile that will sustain itself during adverse environmental conditions. Also, when building a soil that will be more moisture retentive and filled with beneficial bacterial and fungal microorganisms, it becomes essential to keeping that soil moist in the early building stages.

What we endeavour to create, is a soil that will have a “buffer capacity”- which will help the soil withstand any adverse environmental conditions and if needed, the onslaught of chemicals such as selective herbicides and chemical fertilisers. Most of the selective herbicides or fertilisers on the market do have stated on their product labels; do not apply to stressed lawns. This means that you will get a better result if you perhaps irrigate your lawn 24 hours previous to your intended lawn treatment plan. One of the better options for applying organic material in my opinion, is spreading some fine composted powdered cow manure in small doses, frequently throughout the year, and also apply some liquid fish emulsion and occasional seaweed to feed the soil micro flora which also activates the microorganisms that aids in decomposition of the manure which also assists the soil to be more moisture retentive as the organic matter becomes assimilated into the soil profile, which creates that magic-(Buffer Zone), that is desperately needed and necessary, in our sandy (structureless) soils here on the coast. It’s a work in progress- but well worth the effort. Happy gardening to you all!

All the pollinators, birds, bees and butterflies are hovering around (like myself of course), in anticipation for the magnificent spectacle from our spring flowering plants, as their buds burst into life with colourful blooms while providing life-giving nectar and pollen, with the promise of warmer days ahead. Best time of the year to work in

the garden (a pleasure to some- like myself) but there is no time like the present, to get any tired or neglected plants, lawns and gardens pruned, cleaned and fertilised in preparation for this fresh new season’s growth spurt.

Especially good time now to trim any dead or diseased branches off citrus after the fruits have been harvested and also the general maintenance, thinning out or dead heading the old spent blooms off Roses, Camellia, Hibiscus and Grevillea to help promote more flowering, and also to command a better shape before the spring growth flush. Also important to attend to, is weed control in your gardens before they go to seed and also enriching your veggie patch with applications of compost and composted manures in readiness for seed germination or planting out some seedlings this month. The veggies will benefit immensely with applications of composted manures and liquid feeds of seaweed and best to irrigate the lot to nourish the root zone, for optimum results.

Purple Pea Bush, Hovea acutifolia, is a native Australian shrub that grows between 1 to 4 metres tall in cultivation and is adorned with an abundance of vibrant, dainty purple flowers during winter and spring. The branches are also covered in dense grey to rusty coloured hairs. The leaves are lanceolate in shape and grow to around 70 mm long and 12mm wide. The lovely mauve to purple flowers are produced with the typical characteristic pea flower shape with the lower two wings and keel protruding from the bottom front face of the flower, they are then followed with green pods to 15 mm, which ripen to black and pop audibly when they ‘explode’ (dehisce) to release their seed. H. acutifolia flowers are a favourite for bees and especially for our native bees.

H. acutifolia grows best on the eastern coast, from south-east Queensland to the NSW central coast and grows well here on Bribie Island and surrounding districts, to which they can be found growing naturally around the fringe of the Bibimulya Wetlands and protected bushland areas on the island. Purple pea bush prefers welldrained soil growing in a partial shade situation, so they will thrive in that part-shady area in the home garden. Propagation is by either seed after treatment (scraped to remove protective coating and soaked in cold water until they swell or boiled to soften the skin coating like most of the sclerophyll forest species such as our wattles) They also strike well with semi- hardwood cuttings from the new season’s growth. A beautiful and prolific flowering, Australian native shrub for the local wildlife!

Herbs, herbs and more herbs. Time to get them in, basil and Thai basil, oregano and dill, mint, chives and thyme to name a few. They are fast growers and if your planting soil is right and enough sunlight for their needs, you will be starting to harvest as required in no time at all. Veggies to plant or sow now are, beans, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, chicory, Chinese cabbage, cucumber, eggplant, lettuce, melons, mustard, onion, parsnip, potato, pumpkin, radish, rosella, silver beet, squash, sweet corn, sweet potato, tomato and watermelon.

Short of space? No problems, you can plant out herbs and most veggies in pots and place them in a sunny area if possible or you could build or perhaps purchase a readymade- raised garden bed. Some come with protective bird proof mesh if you want, and it’s easy to attach a trellis for climbing beans and cucumbers too.

A good quality planting soil is essential and adding some compost is best for moisture retention which also contains that rich nutrient- dense humus. After planting, I cover the beds with a feeder mulch of sugar cane or lucerne, this will keep the soil cool and protect the roots of delicate plants or seedlings. It’s best to be careful when irrigating some herbs and veggie plants by not overwatering the foliage of capsicum, tomato, basil and grape or zucchini, as this can create fungal problems down the track (such as powdery mildew) when the humidity increases. I always alternate a diluted seaweed or fish emulsion treatment from foliar to soil in the mornings only, to minimise diseases. Now your soil is prepared, mulched and improved with organic fertiliser and planted out, it’s time to enjoy the warmth of spring with our pleasant, coastal weather finally, just like our Eastern Water Dragon- in the image above!

A special occasion recently when Beachmere Indoor Bowls Club celebrated 60 years as an Indoor Bowls Club. Present and past members, as well as guests from Woodford, Wamuran, Palmwoods, Bribie Island and Redcliffe clubs gathered for the historic occasion. Apart from that windy EKKA weekend, life on the water has been pretty calm this past month. In this area, the worst type of wind to fish in is a strong, dry westerly, so it was good that it didn’t last for long. Lately, it’s been only slight morning breezes, usually lifting a little in the afternoon or around the turn of tide. There have been occasional forecasts for more wind from the Bureau of Meteorology but so far - cool nights, dewy mornings and warm days – perfect fishing weather!

The big flathead fishing has been keeping most boaties happy. Early morning starts, and casting out lures, have been very successful strategies for bringing home some decent fish.

Casting at the mouth of Ningi Creek, with a “Z-man Trick SwimZ in Green Lantern” resulted in a nice flathead catch for Tim last week.

Hard-bodied lures and live yabbies or bait fish have certainly been the best choices, but mullet fillets and prawns are also teasing the flathead to strike.

Mel’s not saying exactly where her favourite fishing spot is, but she brought in two flathead - 54cm and 42cm, which were caught with mullet and prawns.

While Ningi Creek has been a favourite spot for the flathead, the westerlies might have pushed a lot of them out into the Passage lately. Good-sized flathead have been found south of the bridge, on the sandbanks, on the mainland side.

That’s where James caught a 50+ cm flathead. Unfortunately, he had it in a bag over the side of the boat, to keep it fresh, and it escaped, to see another day. Tom and his mates were a bit luckier, bringing home three of them from the south side of the bridge; falling tide.

You can catch plenty of flathead, even in winter winds, by being persistent and looking for spots on the western shore of the Passage - unaffected by the westerly wind and draining with the falling tide. Mark, a local, likes to try the gutter which runs from the third green marker off White Patch, up to the north of Parrot Island. He uses the run-out tide there, to get himself some flathead. It’s a bit tricky and you need to be careful or you’ll get your boat stuck for a few hours but last week it worked a treat for Mark! Mullet fillets were the bait.

Shore-based flathead fishing is also going well, especially since the wind dropped - casting out over the sandflats at White Patch and using the tidal flow to move the bait along.

Banksia Beach has been a good place to go for whiting for the past month or two. The yabby banks over there keep the whiting close at this time of year; a rising tide is the best time. North of Ningi Creek is another handy spot to try. Prawns, squid and, of course, live yabbies or live worms are good baits to try out. There have been a few schools of tailor up there too, after the whiting.

Further out of the Passage, whiting schools have been on and off at the Cockle Banks off Bribie. A “big, big”

Pauline and Paul were able to feed the family (and friends) two nights running, with a haul of whiting, from 100 metres south of the south cardinal marker.

The better spots for bream have been in the Pacific Harbour canals, the drop-off at White Patch near the red channel marker for Wright’s Creek, the bridge (mainly at low tide), below the lock-gate on the canal at Bongaree and from Bongaree jetty.

Lastly, the crabbing has been predictably slow. If the westerlies do pick up more, try the ocean beaches, for tailor and other pelagics.

The Fishability Qld Platform Community Fish-off, held at the start of August, at Bongaree jetty, was a very successful day for everyone, with 65 participants. Lots of laughs, and good fun all round. Carmel is a regular Fishability fan – she always gets the fish, and this time she got a MASSIVE 35cm stonefish! Also of note: a junior mackerel – 40cm. There were plenty of under-sized fish; the biggest bream was 27cm.

Another great event held recently was the kayak-fishing competition, with 43 anglers paddling out two weekends ago, from Banksia Beach. About 45-50 flathead were caught. The average size was 40-50cm, with two flathead 6364cm in length. Bream were also caught

Farewell It’s not a good day for our electorate when a local business closes its doors. Pete from SPORT F1RST is a local legend and a truly great bloke. But times have been tough and he made the gutwrenching decision to close after many years of selling quality sporting goods to our community.

Pete has also been a great supporter of our local schools, sporting clubs and sporting events and his business and fine service will be sorely missed by so many.

Pete and his business is a reminder to us all that if we don’t buy local and support our small and family business we will lose them. My buy local campaign is all about this. Ironically Pete agreed to be pictured with me (see below) to help promote this campaign. It is with sadness that I say farewell to the shop next door and on behalf of our entire community, I wish Pete all the very best.

1800 017 116 ALL KIDS DESERVE THE BEST LEARNING ENVIRONMENT In less than a few months’ time, our kids will be returning to school from their Spring Holidays, with many heading straight into sweltering classrooms.

This is an open community forum hosted by Simone Wilson for members of the Pumicestone Electorate. Registration is essential. This forum does not replace the formal public hearings held by Queensland Parliament’s Health Committee .

Now I know there will be plenty who say ‘kids just need to toughen up - after all we didn’t have aircon when we went to school’, but we advance and we are able to do this if the political will is there.

Many parents are grateful that their kids’ classrooms already have air-conditioning.

Our P&C’s shouldn’t be expected to raise the funding needed to air-condition class Not all are so lucky. Research and evidence has proven that hot classrooms have a negative impact on learning, with concentration and comprehension diminishing rooms. It’s high time the Palaszczuk Labor Government matched our policy and airconditioned every State School classroom in Queensland. Our kids deserve this. as the temperate soars.
