Belinda Ferguson Editor/Owner Dear Editor, While I respect Farley’s right to make negative comments about the Royal family, especially the Duke and Duchess of Sussex I don’t agree with him/her at all. I believe Prince Harry and Meghan are great ambassadors for the Veteran community not only here in Australia but internationally with the inception of the Invictus Games. On this Tour they have demonstrated their ability to relate and communicate to all people from all walks of life right across the community, a skill that the people have really appreciated. Maybe Prince Harry could

be considered for the appointment of the next Governor General of Australia. They would do Australia proud as residents of Yarralumba. May I correct Farley’s spelling – in the article he/she advises Harry to ‘where’ a tie. The word is spelt wear! Kay Benson Bribie Island I take exception to the letter to the editor by Farley. Page 38. His personal opinion of Megan and Harry should be kept to himself. My mother taught me if I had nothing good to say about somebody, say nothing. John Dowling Sandstone Point What the left hand gives the right hand takes. Is it just Queensland or Australia wide. We have just been granted 10 cents on returned plastic drink bottles only to have the Food stores up the prices on plastic drink bottles by 15 cents, what a “rort”. It seems to happen time and time again; come on Queenslanders start protesting and stop the rorting. So not only has it wiped out what the refund was giving but they are taking more off us. I offer no loyalty to any company that seeks to “rort us” I suggest all should consider the same. Farley More letters to the Editor on page 43

Michelle Hanton OAM

There’s a quote by Helen Keller that sits beside Michelle Hanton’s Facebook Profile Picture - it reads, “Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement. Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.” My Close Encounters guest, Michelle Hanton reveals the impact that hope and confidence played in a life filled with opportunity, sacrifice, adversity and love. I had the pleasure of meeting Michelle at her Bribie Island home which is also the Head Quarters of her business, Dragon Sisters. There is nothing better than being greeted at the door by your guest holding a 3-litre bottle of milk

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS With Damian Brown

“My educational experiences were extraordinary. When we lived in Jerusalem, I went to the Schmidt's Girls College - an international German school for Christian and Muslim girls, located in East Jerusalem.” asking if you would like a coffee – it just flows – it was so inviting that I almost requested a bowl or cornflakes topped with honey and yoghurt. Bribie Island is home to most of Michelle’s family including her mum, dad, sister and her two grown-up children. It felt strange to interview a woman whose life is so well documented and who is a globally recognised bespoke business strategist, coach, speaker and writer. All you need to do is Google Search - Michelle Hanton and you will get the picture or check out Michelle’s blog site at www.michellehanton.com. au – I encourage you to take a peek. As a daughter, sister, aunty, mum, business woman and advocate for living life with passion and purpose, Michelle Hanton contributes her success, happiness and positive mindset to being raised and educated across a multicultural western and middle eastern world and to the life challenges that Michelle faced including her battle with breast cancer from 1997. Michelle was born in Malaysia to a mum who was an ex-British Army Nurse and a dad who was a Police Inspector with the Malaysian Police Force. When Michelle was a twoyear-old, the family was relocated to Jerusalem after Michelle’s dad joined the United Nations in a full-time capacity. Michelle points out that her Dad’s United Nations role was not of a peace-keeping nature but more of a full-time business role with the United Nations. This kicked-started a life-long UN Service for Michelle’s dad which had her family posted across the Middle East and Nairobi. Michelle said, “My educational experiences were extraordinary - when we lived in Jerusalem, I went to the Schmidt's Girls College, an international German school for Christian and Muslim girls, located in East Jerusalem. The school was founded in 1886 and approximately 500 pupils attend the school today - this is where I learned to speak German which is one of my second languages to our core English language – I also speak Arabic and Spanish although these days they are a bit rusty,” she said. “Over my school years we lived in quite a few middle eastern countries including Beirut, however when the war broke out in 1974, dad was posted to Nairobi. My younger sister and I were sent to boarding school at Rishworth, a co-educational independent school near Halifax, in West Yorkshire, England – It was at Rishworth that I completed my final two years of school. After so many years schooling as a child from the east, an English School

(especially boarding school) was a major culture shock,” Michelle said. “After I finished school, I studied Business and Hospitality and worked with the Arab and Swiss Banking networks. This allowed me to save money and bathe in my addiction to travel – I never really settled in the UK culture.” It was years later on a holiday to Kashmir with her parents that Michelle met an Australian Airforce Serviceman which promoted her first visit to Australia and the rest is history - well almost history. As would have it, Michelle did not settle with her knight in Airforce Uniform but rather travelled to Darwin where she met and eventually married her then husband –

survival from this challenging disease which tragically sees more than 17,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and one in eight women diagnosed with breast cancer by the age of 85.

they travelled to England and returned to raise their two children in Darwin.

As Michelle said in the 2004 ABC Australian Story episode, she found her purpose in life through her battle with breast cancer, culminating in Michelle founding the National Organisation, Dragons Abreast. There are two published documents that best describe the beginning and purpose of the Dragons Abreast Organisation. The first is described in an exert taken from the Dragons Abreast National Website. The second can be viewed in the stunning 2004 Episode of Australian Story – In the Pink - an absolute must-watch story if you can get your hands on a copy. The 2004 Australian Story Program also looks at the work undertaken by the founder of Dragon Boat Paddling for Breast Cancer Survivors in Canada, Dr Don McKenzie. His work promoted exercise for the upper body and identified paddling as one of the best forms of exercise.

Since setting up her family life in Darwin (NT) in the late 1980’s, Michelle worked across a number of sectors including training and practicing as a NT Ambulance Officer; working for NT Government Agencies, managing Lifeline Top End as the CEO for 2 years and developing her own retail, manufacturing and export business in swimwear and gym wear. It was in 1997 while working to design and manufacture her fashionwear labels that Michelle first noticed a lump on her breast – this moment changed her life forever and so began the fight for

Exert – Dragons Abreast Website “What has now become a national movement in Australia originated in the Northern Territory (NT). It started when a group of Territory women attended the First National Breast Cancer Conference for Women held in Canberra in October 1998. Michelle Hanton OAM - the founder of Dragons Abreast, attended this conference. As part of one of the presentations, a Canadian speaker (Sharon Batt) happened to mention that breast cancer survivors in Canada paddled dragon boats. Michelle knew that dragon boats

“It all starts with a positive idea – something that you may be passionate about - something that provides benefit to your community - you plant the seed and lead by example - slowly people who see hope or benefit will join you on the journey”

had just started in the NT because in her professional life she provided racing uniforms for the newly formed NT team. Inspired, Michelle returned to Darwin determined to round up a group of paddlers! In December 1998, the first survivor paddlers took to the water at a fun day hosted by Dragon Boat NT. They were filmed by SBS Television for a program called Tutti and had their first taste of media fame as this program was shown around South East Asia. The ACT followed in early 1999 with Anna Wellings-Booth then Brisbane in the same year with Janelle Gamble. From a small beginning at Lake Alexander in the NT, the appeal is such that the movement has spread across Australia to include every State and Territory.” (Exert – Dragons Abreast @ www. dragonsabreast.com.au/about/). 20 years on, Dragons Abreast is a major national program with over 30 registered groups across each state of Australia. The Dragon Abreast mission is to ‘Encourage wellness, fitness, fun and camaraderie for breast cancer survivors through the sport of dragon boating and promote breast cancer awareness throughout our community.’ When I asked Michelle for the recipe for making things happen and creating support movements like Dragons Abreast, Michelle said, “It all starts with a positive idea – something that you may be passionate about - something that provides benefit to your community - you plant the seed and lead by example people who see hope or benefit will join you on the journey.” It reminded me of a Paul Kelly song, ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow. When you listen to the very beginning of the 2004 Australian Story Episode entitled ‘In the Pink,’ Michelle Hanton talks about Dragons Abreast. She said, “We were dubbed the Pink Ladies and I don’t think that the dragon boat world in Australia knew what was about to be unleashed on them. You meet women who should have survived and don’t – but those of us who have survived – we fight to survive. It’s with hindsight that I have come to realize that we are a floating support group – we don’t advertise ourselves as such but through the friendships made you have that support – we are all in the same boat – both physically and mentally.” Michelle says, “No matter where you live – you have the capacity and the ability to make a difference. Never think because you live in the back blocks of the Northern Territory or on Bribie Island that you are a dot in the ocean. You can make a difference.” In 2007, based on Michelle’s extensive business and not-for-profit background, the Business Dragon Sisters was created (being Michelle and her sister, Yvonne). Dragon Sisters is a global personal and business development consultancy based on Bribie Island focused on taking businesses to the next level. Michelle said, “My passion is working with people one-on-one. We focus particularly on primary communication and developing strategies to grow people and their business. Each of us bring a strength to the business - my sister is very good at selling our message and my daughter, Sasha, who also works in the business, is a writer and journalist – our website is probably a good first point of contact for people to visit us.” It was a gift to have an opportunity to meet Michelle Hanton – a woman that has shared her dreams and capacity across communities to the benefit of many – a woman that has seen and shared adversity through the hideous and crippling disease of breast cancer – a woman that believes in a value of family – a woman with a very big smile – a smile big enough that her eyes shut tight when in full flight. 2018 - Issue 31 islandandsurrounds.com.au

There is no doubt that women are cutting into every aspect of professional life which is positive for our society. -

You were awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2008 – what do this mean to you? I was delighted to receive an OAM – I am proud of my work and efforts - it was overwhelming, however the award is a representation and reward for all those survivors, supporters and our angels that made the Dragons Abreast Organisation possible and my journey a reality. Where does religion and spirituality fit in your life? I was christened in the Anglican Faith and my mother still actively practices the Anglican faith. My spirituality comes from living good values and doing the right thing by people. I connect with my spirituality by behaving with compassion – living my values – being kind. I believe in karma and meditation. Do the right thing by people and make sure you can look at yourself in the morning. How important is family to you? Culturally, family is everything to me. It’s remarkable when you think where we started our life journey and where we have arrived. My sister was born in Jerusalem and we both ended up at boarding school in Rishworth, Yorkshire and today we live and work together on Bribie Island. My Dad and Mum travelled the world through all those countries with the UN and now they live around the corner from me on Bribie Island. My son, my daughter, my mum, my dad, my sister, my brother we are here in Australia together alive and living true to ourselves every day. What impact do you feel that social communication mediums have had on our society? I think that social media has a large part to play. Information or misinformation is so readily available – Someone sitting in their loungeroom can be watching on TV while scrolling through facebook and thinking, 'this must all be true.' People can end up living life vicariously rather than through experience. The problem is that if you can’t see through the noise – you can’t gain perspective. What do you see as the biggest challenge in society? I think that we can do a lot to promote acceptance amongst each other. One of my past coaches had this saying, “Bad things happen because good people do nothing. I think this is true when it comes to contributing to your community. We can have a greater society if we contribute to the best of our ability. Where do you gain your business acumen? Business acumen is born out of a life of experience living and working across the world - it comes from an exposure to so many ways of doing things. If I had accepted no at any point in my life, I would not have been where I am today. It is because I inadvertently gained a global business perspective working in those private banks gave me an insight into big business. How do you see the roles of men and women in society? I see both genders being equally of value but totally different – generally speaking women are more likely to seek help – Today women are far more resilient – I think you must respect both sexes. Personally, I feel that there are some roles that men are better at then women and equally I feel that there are roles that women are better at performing than men. Certainly women can operate boardrooms and perform every professional role available today.

What’s next for Michelle Hanton? Well I have ‘officially’ made my permanent home on Bribie after sharing time between Darwin and Bribie Island for the past 16 years. My business and Dragons Abreast took me all around Australia for many years. I need to be here with my business, children and both of my parents who need our care in their later years. I have also recently accepted a part-time role as the Events Manager with the Abbey Medieval Festival which is very good for me – it has become a little harder to travel too far away from my parents. How can people contact you? I have my mobile phone available to take calls – of course I have periods of time where my phone is on silent – people can contact me anytime. What type of food do you enjoy? I love many foods - my mum trained us to enjoy a diverse range of food. It’s hard to resist a hot spicy Asian dish. My son does most of the cooking, but I do enjoy cooking.

How often do you go paddling? I try to get out in the boat 3 times per week although I find it hard in winter around Bribie when you compare this to the Northern Territory weather. Where are your favourite travel destination? I love to travel to Italy and Spain – I have lived in Spain where I have some good friends. I enjoy the history, food and great company. Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club hosted an Armistice Day Bowls Tournament on Saturday 10 December with teams from community groups and businesses across Beachmere. The day, hopefully an annual event, encouraged the community to come together and remember the service and sacrifice of our nation’s soldiers, sailors, air force personnel, nurses and merchant mariners in defending Australia and its people. The day was a “fun” informal, barefoot bowls day allowed people to celebrate peace and enjoy the company of others as they remembered the legacy of living in a free nation, enjoying life and having a good time.

Cranky Lizard Speaks

Everybody is Shouting – Nobody is listening. Foremost, in some people’s minds, is why the pseudonym? Why not just say who you are and be done with it?

Privacy and personal security, therefore, make it essential to be pseudonymous. There are accepted rules regarding the use of pseudonyms in literature and Cranky Lizard complies with all of them….other literary persons who use pseudonyms are Dr Seusss, Robert Galbraith and Stephen King to name a couple.

But enough of that.

There are much more critical events unfolding in our Nation. Cranky Lizard asks you all to consider this fact, not opinion, a fact carefully! At any one time, there are 40 plus oil tankers heading to Australia, filled with oil. Oil which is vital for the daily operation of our Nation.

Australia has no strategic oil reserve for its day to day operations – perhaps we could operate for 40+ days without oil tankers, but after that? Understandably we have no real idea what the Australian Defence Forces hold in reserve, nor should we, but we can assume that it would not be sufficient to mount a long military defensive campaign – but that, Folks, is not the point. Any emerging military power in our region and there are at least three, could disrupt this oil flow fairly easily leaving us flopping about like a stranded whale on a hostile beach. And, are we as a nation addressing

this issue? Are we asking our political leaders what are they doing about this? No. We are not. We are shouting at each about Section 44 of the Constitution and focusing on personalities and identities. That is what we are doing. Complacency has gripped our political leadership in these matters – we have been informed that we must have a modern submarine fleet to help us protect our shores and our maritime trade routes. We have been informed that these submarines are vital.

Note that. Vital.

But we won't even get one until probably some time in the 2030’s. We could buy US Navy submarines pretty much straight away and for less money, but nuclear engines power them; and bum closing, hysterical nonsense prevails when the issue of nuclear power raises its Minotaur-like head in the halls of defence procurement. It is not that the Defence people are not familiar with nuclear powered naval vessels, the problems are the orchestrated screeching and gimlet-eyed staring from sections of the community and their political representatives when nuclear energy in any form is discussed. So, our leaders, shy away from the shouting and finger-pointing and we, as a Nation, wait for ten/fifteen years for vital defence equipment. We can only hope that any nation, potentially hostile to us, will wait for us to get the

is that disputes and differences become battles between good and evil. Issues become polarised, and the mundane injustices of everyday life evolve into a contest of distorted morality. For example, regardless of the number of hours you give freely to a charity or a social cause if you do not support climate change, you become, to a large section of the community, an enemy – a bad person and therefore you will be shouted at, often!

The second great untruth is that people will be threatened and oppressed if their beliefs and opinions are challenged, People should be protected and made safe- thus the growth of the fragile society and evolution of safe spaces in Universities etc. Sensible, robust public debate is curtailed; your views on social matters become your identity and to sections of the community you become a threat and must be shouted at, or your voice must be stilled because you are challenging other peoples’ preconceptions. Quite obviously if we encourage the view that no public offence should occur at any time, then the final result will be a powder puff society; a proliferation of much fluff and no substance.

The last two publications of Cranky Lizard’s words have generated some interesting and worthwhile comments on the whole subject of Cranky Lizard, and why Cranky Lizard speaks in such a manner.

Cranky Lizard is a very average person who lives in the region in a very ordinary suburban house. Cranky Lizard is also aware that there are forces in today’s society that did not exist, say ten years ago. These forces are driven by the dark energy of identity politics and will use social media as a weapon to deliver harassment and bullying to people and organisations which disagree with them.

subs………………Can we hope?

In our Federal Parliament the Government flicks Prime Ministers like changing shirts, the Opposition gloats, sitting, like Jabba The Hut, waiting for political power to fall into its hands. But Government may be a poisoned chalice – our debt-to-GDP ratio is at about 30% - close enough to economic chaos as we want to be; are we sensibly addressing the issue? Nup! We are shouting at each other across the floor of the house and in our national media; yelling and finger pointing, apportioning blame and seeking retribution.

The terrible fact is our public finances are not sound, Australia would struggle to deal with another global economic crisis, we don’t have the buffer of careful management we had last time, and we don’t seem to be able to do anything about it except shout at each other! Why can’t we function in the national interest? Why the division? Well, it seems as if we have become involved in the three great lies which are destroying Western culture. And Cranky Lizard draws upon a document called “ The Coddling of the American Mind “ by Haidt and Lukianoff, one a sociologist and one a lawyer; and an article by Paul Kelly of The Australian, who wrote a splendid opinion piece about this matter. The first great untruth in today’s world

The third great untruth is the “ untruth of emotional reasoning “ [ direct quote from Authors.]. The more you shout, gesticulate, weep, posture, sob, growl, fight or screech the more you prove you care. Unemotional reasoned logic only shows that you are a cold, shocking person and therefore, obviously, an oppressor. The internet provides a global village green forum for the ‘ fake news, cyber trolls and confected hysteria. ‘ that run about on our phones and on our laptops.

Consequently, our politics are operating in a febrile atmosphere on the edge of emotion and reason; poor decisions are being made, and these poor decisions will affect us strategically and globally for some time to come.

For those of you who want Cranky Lizard to be quiet – forget it! I won't be. Cranky Lizard encourages all of us to take part in reasoned, calm debate in issues which affect our lives. Lose the identity rubbish, lose the blame handles, lose the outrage and start talking and debating with each other in a manner which encourages our political leaders to do the same.

Because with the threats and challenges to our security and our economy that Cranky Lizard has detailed here – we shall need to be calm and talk sensibly. Stop shouting and start listening – Cranky Lizard is convinced that will work for all of us.

Enjoy your days.

fun, as they are humorous, as well as containing themes which are relevant, or which students can relate to. I am glad I have a set, but sad you are going out of production. Good luck with the future.’ Our garage has the remaining stock - about 100 sets of books which we don’t want to waste. We talked about possibilities over many coffees. Try to sell the business? TAFE used to run an English class at Don KR Castlemaine bacon factory. I was the teacher. Some South Sudanese men who had never been to school anywhere were employed in the smallgoods section.

I searched in vain for reading material that was suitable for adults who were only beginning to read and write, but all I could find were stories for early primary school. Stories about kittens and teddy bears. Hardly material for these tall, strong men who had dealt with war and who had escaped from danger. My partner had a small publishing business, so I suggested we produce books that were adult in content but suitable for beginners. He agreed and so Sound English was created. We based our work on the 44 sounds we use in Aussie English. Over the next few years, we wrote, illustrated and published fifty small readers.

English isn’t an easy language to learn. The first book we produced was called Friends. We focussed on the sound e as in egg. How many ways are there to write that sound? Well, there’s e as in egg but what about ie as in friend, a as in many and ea as in bread? No wonder even those born in Australia find spelling hard! Whenever possible we included humour, so I had fun writing. Titles included Thelma’s three husbands, Chicken, chips or Chinese? Hurt at work and

The new driver.

But we are not young. Last month my partner and I had a serious talk. He had been finding it increasingly difficult to keep up with the administrative side and suggested we close our business down. It was time! Not easy though. First we had to announce the closure on our website. I also announced the news on Facebook. Tributes were posted…’A hard decision to make. Be proud of how many lives you’ve changed.’ ‘What a pity. Your books have made my English tutoring easier and a lot of

Just some of the 100 plus crowd that came along for the launch of U3A Beachmere The recent Public Meeting in Beachmere arranged to gauge interest in, and garner support for, a Beachmere U3A Campus met with significant support from over 100 people on the day. Beachmere Area Network Group President, Karen Harris, the local community group organising the meeting said the response was very pleasing and showed Beachmere was ready for a U3A campus of its own.

“Over 100 people attended the meeting and there was definitely a positive atmosphere. People were putting their hands up to be Tutors and we are very excited about the variety of classes we will be able to offer,” Karen said.

“Beachmere residents travel to both Bribie and Caboolture to attend classes and enjoy the U3A learning experience. From Term One 2019 they will be able to enjoy a multitude of classes much closer to home in Beachmere.”

“Initially we will be operating under the umbrella of Bribie U3A but expect that within about twelve months we will be our own entity. Bribie, Caboolture and Beachmere will have reciprocal membership arrangements for classes and we anticipate that will be welcomed by our new members as we establish and grow.”

It’s a little like dying, except we are still alive to receive feedback. We gave birth. We worked very hard. We grew tired. We decided to put our business to sleep. What you should consider before buying a new mattress:-

Beachmere u3a campus receives significant support Vice President of Bribie U3A, Ann Brooks was eloquent in her support of U3A in a community and the benefits it achieved for individuals, especially new people to the area. Ann said Bribie was happy to offer Beachmere every support to get established and will be working with the Beachmere committee to ensure it’s success.

President of Caboolture U3A Wendy Sanders also attended and spoke of the support Caboolture U3A had received in starting out, and how successful Caboolture campus is now – not only in the number of members but also in changes it had made to member’s attitude to learning, meeting new people and gaining a renewed purpose in life.

Both Ann and Wendy said people gained great satisfaction from not only enjoying classes at U3A but also volunteering, meeting new people and learning new skills. With Beachmere, Caboolture and Bribie U3A agreeing to reciprocal membership arrangements all U3A members across the region should be very pleased. Anyone interested in joining Beachmere U3A can find information at Bribie U3A, or by sending an email to u3a@ bang.org.au or calling 0456 685 736. Over the next decade we sold to most TAFE colleges in Queensland, prisons in WA and adult education centres in all states. Also, overseas. Students born in Australia but who, for whatever reason, hadn’t learned to read and write well also appreciated them.

We often travelled across Australia. I found out in advance what high schools and adult education places were in each town we were to pass through and phoned ahead for an appointment. Many of these places now have our titles in their collection.

You spend about one third of your life in a bed. That’s a big part of your life. Probably longer than you spend in your car or on the lounge watching T.V. Do you wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and relaxed after a good night’s sleep or do you wake up feeling like you haven’t slept at all? When you roll over in bed is your partner disturbed by the movement? Or, worse still, do you roll together and meet in the middle? Is your mattress lumpy? Is it 10, 15 or even 20 years old? Have you forgotten when you last bought a bed? One day your trusty old mattress seems fine and the next day it doesn’t. This sometimes becomes more noticeable after a holiday when you have been sleeping in another bed. Maybe you should read on…. Ask yourself these three questions:1. Why do I need a new mattress? The main reasons people think about buying a new mattress are:a) The one they are sleeping on is no longer comfortable b) They are moving into a new home c) The bed size or type is no longer suitable for their needs. 2. How should I choose a new mattress?

The way you sleep determines the kind of mattress you need. Consider whether you are a Back Sleeper needing support for the lower back, a Side Sleeper needing the shoulders and hips to sink into the mattress a little or a Stomach Sleeper needing to hold your body up.

Enquire about our FLEXIAD We have contracts yes, and it does enable you to save in the long run, however our new FLEXIAD contract might suit you better? We allow you to take out a contract with us in order to save however you use as and when you need it, within a 12 month or 24 month period. *Conditions apply 3. How do I know that a mattress is suitable for my needs?

The only way to find out is to road test it. You wouldn’t buy a new car without taking it for a drive and you can’t test a mattress without lying on it. You need to test a mattress for at least 15 minutes and couples should test it together. Also consider the size of the room you are putting it in. If you are buying a replacement mattress of the same size this shouldn’t be a problem but if you are buying a whole new bed keep in mind not only the size of the room but also the access to the room. Spiral staircases and narrow doorways can become an issue if you choose a bigger bed. In this case, size does matter. Sleep research shows that the lack of a good night's rest can lead to illness, stress and irritability but this is not rocket science. Anyone who has had a bad night’s sleep can tell you that.

If your bed base is in good condition then you might only need a new mattress to get you sleeping well again. There is a mattress for every body. Whether you need better support due to the aches and pains caused by the simple process of getting older, or a mattress that will keep you sleeping cooler by dissipating the heat from your body then visit Jason at Bribie Upholstery and Bedding Showroom to find out how a new mattress might change your life.

Time Management

If you struggle with time management, the good news is that with discipline and a few strategies you’ll soon be able to ace time management. It’s not easy, but it is doable and like everything it takes training. With good habits, you’re freeing yourself up to have more hours to spend on things that really matter. Stuff like family time, getting out with friends, or just precious time to relax with a good book, meander along the beach, binge Netflix or whatever takes your fancy. Most important of all is that when you carve out time for yourself, your business grows and thrives. The reason is simply this – you are in a better frame of mind. You are relaxed and refreshed, so you are more focussed when you are working. My #1 Tip is to take control of your inbox.

When you control your inbox, as opposed to it controlling you, you’ll soon notice that you’re able to achieve a lot more. It begins with switching your inbox to offline mode. You still have your inbox open so you can action and refer to content while

Small Business Scams Scammers take advantage of the busy nature of many small businesses to swindle them. How the Scam Works

Scams targeting small businesses come in all sorts of guises and are likely to strike at the busiest times, like the end of the financial year. A false billing scam is the most common trick scammers use against small businesses. Scammers issue fake bills for unwanted or unauthorised listings, advertisements, products or services. The business directory scam is a wellknown example, where you receive a bill for listing in a supposedly wellknown directory. Scammers trick you to sign up by disguising the offer as an outstanding invoice or a free listing, but with a hidden subscription agreement in the fine print. The domain name scam is another ploy used by scammers, where you are deceived into signing up for an unsolicited internet domain registration very similar to your won. You may also receive a fake renewal notice for your actual domain name and pay without realising.

An office supply scam involves you receiving and being charged for products that you did not order. These scams

working. You can even write responses, but the responses won’t be sent till you go back online. By working offline, you are no longer distracted by emails as they drop in.

Yes, yes, I know – you have willpower, but that’s not exactly true is it? I mean to say out of the corner of your eye you will see that email icon. You’ll register at some level that there is new mail, and you may be tempted to peek at what’s just dropped in.

The moment you peek, you become distracted. When you’re distracted your attention is no longer focussed on the tasks at hand. Peeking at emails means you spend at least 2 minutes each time (and it’s usually more than 2 minutes) trying to regain your thought pattern and get back into your ”flow”. This is not productive. Imagine you do this for 10 emails over the course of the day – that’s 20 minutes you’ve lost. 20 minutes just getting your thoughts back into the flow. Then there’s the time you spend reading, and I’m betting you didn’t action it immediately, so you will go back later and deal with the matter.

This precious time is something you will never get back. So don’t waste it. From a personal perspective, I’m as guilty as the next person of wanting to peek at emails. BUT, I control this urge by working in offline mode – it’s part of my secret sauce formula for day-to-day self-management.

How often should you look at emails? This very much depends on how your work comes in and your day flows. I suggest 3 – 4 times a day. Work out what works for you and start to establish your own routine – there is no one size fits all – because each place of business is somewhat unique. I guarantee you’ll love this way of working once you get into the habit – although it might scare you a bit at first to be offline. Got questions about trying this routine? Get in touch and ask me via email michelle@dragonsisters.com. au Until next issue… www.dragonsisters.com.au 0418 898082

Can you see how you’d pretty quickly waste 60 minutes? That’s a scary thought because if you repeat this pattern each day (and you get more than 10 emails) you’ll be clocking up several hours a week of wasted time. often involve products or services that you regularly order such as stationery and cleaning supplies. Scammers typically call your business pretending that a service or product has already been ordered.

Payment redirection scams involve a scammer using information they have obtained by hacking your computer systems. They then pose as one of your regular suppliers and tell you that their banking details have changed. They may tell you they have recently changed banks and may use copied letterhead and branding to convince you they are legitimate. They will provide you with a new bank account number and ask that all future payments are processed accordingly. The scam is often only detected when your regular supplier asks why they have not been paid.

Protect yourself • Don’t agree to offers or deals straight away – always ask for an offer in writing and seek independent advice if the deal involves money, time or a long-term commitment. • Never provide your business’ banking, financial and accounting details to someone that you don’t know and trust. • Effected management procedures can go a long way towards preventing scams – have clearly defined processes for verifying and paying accounts and invoices and look very carefully at requests to change banking details. • Train your staff to recognise scams • Back up your business data offsite and offline This article extract from ACCC – The Little Black Book of Scams

Sunday Gridlock

by Sasha Hanton Outbound traffic from Bribie Island on a Sunday has become a nightmare. With increased tourism and living population, Bribie’s bridge with a single lane in each direction just isn’t cutting it anymore. Built in 1963 the bridge has provided a vital connection to the mainland and a useful draw for tourism to the island. With the construction of the bridge, Bribie became the only Moreton Bay Island connected to the mainland, which has made it an attractive living choice. Since the bridge’s construction population numbers have swelled to over 17,000 which is a huge leap from the population of 600 before the bridge. The skyrocket in population and the addition of more tourist destinations means Bribie Island Road and Bribie Bridge are seeing an influx of traffic. With increased traffic numbers weekend gridlocks and traffic accidents have become a frequent occurrence. State Member Simone Wilson MP has been flooded with resident concerns regarding the gridlock. “Last week alone I received four calls from locals about the congestion and spoke to people when I was out and about in the community. They all know where this gridlock is stemming from and that is Bribie Island Road. The week before last my office received a number of calls from locals and the week before that more fed up locals either called or came into my office to voice their concerns for what is going on. Hardly a day will go by when people don’t contact me to express concerns for the increasing problems on our roads. Like a gentleman from Sandstone Point who told me how Bestmann Road East a few weekends ago was banked up for two kilometres with cars trying to get onto Bribie Island Road at the lights. The Government’s neglect in fixing our major road, Bribie Island Road, is a frequent complaint and without a doubt the single most important issue that people raise with me.” Simone said. Andrew Joyce is one such resident, who found himself stuck in the gridlock whilst trying to get a friend to the airport. On his experience, Andrew had this to say “It was a couple of Sundays ago. We were going to the airport and we were at the roundabout near the BP, the big roundabout, and it took around thirty minutes to get to the entrance of the bridge. And the outbound lanes from the roundabout to the bridge were just at a standstill.” Luckily for Andrew’s friend, that was visiting from Melbourne, they managed to make it to the airport just in time. However, if they’d been stuck in the gridlock much longer they easily could have missed their flight. “I’ve never seen it like this before. It was evident to me that most of the traffic around me were visitors to the island for the day and going home. It was just congestion to leave the island, it seemed like everyone was leaving at the same time. Given the amount of crashes on the bridge it would seem the bridge is too narrow for the amount of traffic that’s now using the bridge.” Andrew said. The bridge itself is not the only issue; Andrew Joyce related that the traffic gridlock is also partially because Bribie Island Road only has two lanes. “It is not possible to look at the gridlock issues on Bribie Island in isolation. The root cause is coming from a heavily congested Bribie Island Road. There is a major bottleneck occurring with vehicles trying to exit the Island – people are coming back from the beach at Woorim causing the round-a-bout at Goodwin and Sunderland Drives to block, then they are trying to get out from Welsby Parade and Sylvan Beach Esplanade. Add to this the amount of cars trying to get out of Bestmann Road East and you can start to see why the two lanes along Bribie Island Road (before the dual carriageway past

Community Kalmakuta Drive) is just not sufficient to carry this amount of cars. On top of this, there is significant development occurring in the Spinnaker Drive precinct with hundreds more residents to be living there in the very near future.” Said Simone Wilson MP. While works are currently commencing on Bribie Island Road the Bribie Island Bridge situation is far from being solved. The Department of Transport and Main Roads has conducted a corridor study looking at duplicating/replacing Bribie Island Bridge but as of yet no work has officially begun and is unlikely to start until sometime between 2031 to 2038. Simone Wilson MP is trying to push for a solution sooner rather than later. “We all need to be able to get out on weekends and move around our Island. The best advice I can give residents is to get behind my fight to fix Bribie Island Road and you can do this by signing my petition” You can find the petition at www. FixBribieIslandRoad.com.au

Amelia Strazdins A roof over their heads, an education and freedom, these are three privileges that many children take for granted. However, this is not the case for everyone, in fact many children across the world struggle to gain access to fresh water let alone an education.

On the 20th of November UNICEF encouraged everybody to wear blue in a show of support. Businesses were asked to turn their logo, website or social media platform blue for the day and discuss future generation employment.

On the 20th of November, the United Nations promotes international togetherness and the improvement of child welfare.

Individuals spread the message and donated to a more than worthy cause. Schools across Australia participated in fundraising and the World’s Largest Lesson- which taught students about the day and their right to schooling. This event was recognised globally with numerous countries participating in similar events. The need for change towards these issues has caused big company names such as LEGO to act. They are allowing children to create an advertisement using their own words and ideas, this helping support their statement on why every child has the right to play. The Sydney harbour bridge was lit up blue as was the opera house, all helping to spread the same messageit is time to make a change. It may not occur to us, having never being denied education or having to worry about the lack of our basic human rights but it is imperative that we help. We can ensure that these skills and a child’s safety become a reality. We as a society have the power to help create provide equality and opportunities that are so sought after.

This day aims at improving the state of education, access to clean water and providing basic necessities to children across the world, with a specific focus on those residing in a lower economic status country. World Children’s Day was established in the year 1954, which was a historic date as it was when the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) general assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Children. The declaration outlined basic rights for children including the right to life, survival and development, the right for no discrimination and the right to respect the views of the child. Now living within a modern era, the UN has directed it focus to spreading awareness about the day and each year allocates a specific target point. In 2018 their aim is to ‘… build a world where every child is in school, safe from harm and can fulfil their potential…’. Its focus this year so heavily prevalent with over 264 million children currently unable to start or finish proper education courses.

STEP BY STEP…we are making a difference

At the time of writing (17 Nov) 61 women have been killed as a result of violence this year alone. This is an increase of 8 women since the same time last year. Hairdressers with Hearts aims to help reduce these figures by getting the word out into the wider hairdressing community that there is something positive hairdressers can do to help end the violence. Australia has in excess of 55,000 hairdressers with the ability to directly impact the endemic issue of domestic violence and elder abuse. It comes down to training so a hairdresser can provide the right advice and the right referrals at the right time. It is a long walk from Bribie Island to reach so many hairdressers. However, we are working step by step to achieve our goals. This has included spreading the word via an interview on ABC Radio, key members of our team meeting with Susan Lamb, Member for Longman to share fuller details of our goals and seek her support to promote our message in

TomorrowThat Magical Place Tomorrow, ahhhh don’t we all just love tomorrow? Because Tomorrow is the day that amazing things happen. It’s the day when all those things you said you were going to do today, but didn’t do, will happen. Tomorrow all your stars will align and the moon will be in your seventh sign and Jupiter will align with Mars. The temperature will be a perfect 22o with fluffy clouds smiling down on you and the birds will sing a sonnet as you rise happily at dawn to easily jog at least 20kms while burning a ridiculously large number of calories. When you get back from your refreshing and non-sweaty jog your clothes will fit you perfectly and your breakfast will be completely calorie/fat/sugar/anything free. Ahhhh tomorrow, that magical place. You go to bed and you can’t wait for tomorrow! But then it arrives it has suddenly become Today!! What? How did that happen? You never said you were going to exercise TODAY! No you said you are going to do that TOMORROW! Today is the completely wrong day to be exercising at all since it isn’t a Monday and it isn’t a new week, month or year and everyone knows that

you can’t possibly start an exercise programme on just any old TODAY, it has to be done on a very specific Day…. The day known as Tomorrow. So how many tomorrows have you missed this year? Yes it’s now November and the resolution you made on New Year eve about making a change to your lifestyle by starting to exercise and eat healthy is now approximately 330 days past it’s “tomorrow” due date. Wow isn’t it amazing just how long you can avoid doing something that you promised yourself you would do by waiting until tomorrow to do it. And of course now that it is November you just know it’s wayyyyyyyy toooooo lattttteeee in the year to start making changes and Christmas is coming so why not start eating Christmas “treats” now to get in early before they all disappear! Well guess what, surprise, surprise, I am here to tell you that in reality you can make a change any time you want. It doesn’t have to be on a Monday, or a New Year, it doesn’t even have to be in the morning. Just because your day started today with a chocolate muffin and a triple cream caramel syrup

Senior Gentle Co-Ordination Exercises to Music Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music! PLEASE START SLOWLY AND IF YOU BECOME UNCOMFORTABLE OR BREATHLESS STOPAND REST. Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started! The exercises below are to help with your co-ordination and are similar to what we do in Heartbeats classes. Put on some music that you enjoy with a beat that isn’t too fast. If the beat is a bit too fast then use every second beat. Remember exercising does becomes easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.

Chair Elbow to Knee

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Reach up with both hands to a point that is comfortable for you Keep one hand up and bring the other elbow down At the same time lift the opposite knee and try and touch your elbow to your knee Find the beat in your music and repeat slowly up to10 times Bring both arms down and rest Repeat with the other elbow and knee. Rest

Chair Marching

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet placed on the floor with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Find the beat in your music and “March” your opposite leg and arm while seated for 15 times. Rest Repeat again when you are ready

Chair Star Jumps

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Have feet slightly apart and feet flat on the ground Bring your arms up and your legs out in time to the beat so that you look like you are doing “Star jumps” do 5 “jumps” and rest

Chair Clap and Kick

Sit upright with your shoulders back in a stable chair Clap your hands beside your right shoulder and at the same time lift your left knee. Swap sides so that you clap by your left shoulder and lift your right knee Do this in time to the beat of your music 10 times Rest Repeat when you are comfortable to do so. Rest

coffee, doesn’t mean it can’t finish with a 30 minute walk and a stir-fry of vegetables and beef for dinner. Right now we have clients that will complete their 12 week challenge at the end of this week and because they all couldn’t possibly start on a Monday (yes they are real people with real lives, jobs, families and other commitments – just like you) some actually started their challenge on….. brace yourself!!!...... on a FRIDAY! GASP! YES! FRIDAY!!!!! And while I know you will think this is just some sort of weird parallel universe thing, our clients who started on a Friday, Wednesday, gulp even on a Thursday night, are all still alive and have lost weight, centimetres, have become fitter and healthier every week since they started. Some haven’t lost a huge amount of weight and that doesn’t matter, it’s not always about weight loss!!! What has happened is their lifestyle has changed and they are well on their way to living longer and stronger and making healthier choices than before. But HOW did they do that? I hear you ask. And sadly that’s the thing, so many won’t believe what we say, until we produce another group of clients and wave them about like human shaped party tricks to prove that what we tell you is the truth. You can become fitter, healthier, more toned, stronger, lose centimetres and bodyfat by eating real food and moving. But you can still convince yourself that you can’t possibly do it yourself, surely

Health and Wellbeing they must be extraordinary people who don’t work or have families to cook for or they are just “lucky”. Then the actual real everyday people who have challenged themselves to change their lifestyle let us share their photos and start saying weird things like “Feeling great” “clothes are now too big” “Eating more food than ever before” “my whole family is healthier and happier” and you realise that it can be done at any time by anyone at any age….. At that point if you really do want to be happier, healthier, live longer and stronger, be more independent, have more confidence and start loving having your photo taken and clothes shopping you will call Cathy on 0408803037 to book in for a free chat to plan how you are going to do this. Some of you will ring us to find out how that can make sure they are booked in for the New year before the Resolution crowd get all the best times and spaces and then will go and enjoy their Christmas knowing they are good to go in 2019. Of course some of you will contact Cathy… Tomorrow.

Young Adults with Disability Taking Steps to Independence

It can be hard for young adults with a disability to find friends, integrate into the community and live with a sense of purpose. However, by learning to be more independent, they gain a greater ability to speak up for themselves and choose the life they want. They may even increase their capacity to settle into a home and life of their own. In our experience every step they take to physical, emotional and social independence is beneficial both for them as individuals and for the community.

so supports their personal growth and development and helps them get more involved with the community. That is where services like the Learning Centre at Bribie Respite & Support Services come in. The Bribie Respite Young Adult with Disability Support Services program is run at the Learning Centre by highly skilled staff and volunteers for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. We offer practical assistance in developing self-care skills such as personal hygiene, cooking, cleaning and house hold skills such cleaning and laundry, social skills, practical maths and money management, travel training and road safety, and dance, drama and sports for confidence and coordination enhancement. From this November we will also offer overnight respite camps.

With appropriate support, young adults with disabilities can make significant steps towards learning daily living skills and more independence. The process may be a gradual one and may require extra effort, time and positive energy but age is certainly no barrier to learning.

We aim to create a safe and secure environment through which young adults with disabilities are able to develop every day skills and form new friendships, gradually becoming more independent and confident along the way.

Starting slowly and proceeding step by step with changes that add up to a more empowered lifestyle is the best way to go. It is helpful if young adults with disability can be encouraged to choose their own friends because the process of doing

Healthy food in a hurry So you’re stressed and rushed off your feet. You’re hungry, or even hangry and you don’t care or have the time to consider the nutritional value of what you eat, you just want to quickly shove something down. You’re secretly hoping there’s chocolate left in the staffroom at your workplace. Sound like you?

When you are stressed your body is in flight or fight mode. When you are eating you need to be in rest and digest mode, in order for you to digest your food properly. So take a few moments to relax and contemplate your food before eating it. You will know when you eat too quickly or while you are stressed that you will suffer with indigestion and other uncomfortable symptoms. What you eat provides nourishment for your body and brain. Eating while rushed is not ideal, so what you eat is even more important. Try to include protein, fat and complex carbohydrate at each meal. The protein and fats will help you to feel fuller for longer and will help to stabilize your blood sugar levels. If you have coffee, coke, chocolate, cake, or lollies as a quick ‘pick me up’, the spike in blood sugar will be short lived and followed by a slump, which will affect your energy levels and mood.

If you set aside some preparation time on the weekend it will help you to be organised and prepared throughout the week. Suggestions are: Chop up vegetables like carrots, celery, cucumber, capsicum into strips.

potato, potato and pumpkin.

If you enjoy cooking you could get on a roll and make some savoury muffins or mini quiches, and a homemade sweet muffin or slice is always a better option than bought. Make or purchase a dip such as hommous or pesto; or avocado can be used as a dip.

If you have a sweet tooth you could make up some protein balls made on dates, coconut, almond meal, chia, cacao etc on the weekend and throw a couple in each day.

In the morning it is so quick and easy to throw into a lunchbox some cut up vege sticks, cherry tomatoes, broccoli, an egg or some cooked chicken, and a dip or avocado. Add some nuts and crackers, and a piece of fruit or two and your day is sorted! Alternatively you could throw in some cooked quinoa, broccoli, baby spinach, sweet potato, and egg or chicken. Drizzle over a simple sauce made by mixing yoghurt (dairy or coconut) with some turmeric. Or peanut butter with coconut milk and a touch of soy sauce. Always carry snack food that will be nourishing and sustaining like vegetable sticks, fruit and nuts.

Of course keep hydrated with plenty of water and herbal teas.

Cook up some protein such as boiling some eggs or cooking some chicken pieces. Boil up a grain such as quinoa or brown rice. Roast some veges such as sweet

Poolwerx donate $500 to VMR

By Ernie Mayne

On Wednesday, 31st October, at Poolwerx in Bongaree, the owner’s Anthony and Michelle Spicer, together with staff member Rachael McCubben, handed a donation cheque over to ViceCommodore Ces Luscombe and Senior Radio Operator Peter McNamara of the Bribie Island VMR.

The cheque for $500 was gratefully received and it will go towards the purchase of a new infra-red camera for Bribie One. Their current system has developed some issues recently and they have decided to replace it with a later model. Some of the equipment issues they have been because the vessels has to go out in very heavy weather and the forces on the vessel can be substantial in big seas. It is precisely these conditions when they are most needed, so this means that sometimes equipment suffers on the vessels. It is a very harsh operating environment for their equipment and constant

maintenance/replacement are needed. These FLIR units cost thousands of dollars so the contribution of Poolwerx towards this replacement is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Poolwerx has dedicated space within their premises for the VMR to hold raffles and any other fundraising event they choose every couple of weeks. They are both in the business of water safety after all. The Bribie Island VMR are always in fundraising mode. Although they receive a government grant every year (which is spread between 26 VMR’s statewide), they still need extra funds. Also, they are always looking for extra volunteers to assist in many categories, either onshore or out on the water. Residents who are interested, male or female, can contact Bribie Island VMR on 34087596 or at www.vmrbribe.com for further information.

Martin Jonkers donate Toyota Hi-Lux ute

Vice-Commodore Luscombe would also like to thank Martin Jonkers Motors for providing a brand new Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4 ute to assist them in their duties.

The latest Flir Unit – Infra-Red Camera

Poolwerx is now open seven days a week for the residents of Bribie Island. You can purchase anything relating to the operation and maintenance of your backyard pool at a competitive price and always with a friendly smile.

Small Business Owner to contest Longman for the LNP

The Liberal National Party has preselected local small businessman, Terry Young to contest the next federal election in the electorate of Longman. “Terry is exactly what the Liberal National Party is all about,” LNP President, Gary Spence said. “He’s a family man who risked it all to start a small business, worked hard, employed locals and gives back to his community.” Raised in Kallangur, Terry attended Kallangur Primary and Dakabin State High before working his way up in retail. “I opened the Chandlers store at Caboolture Park Shopping Centre in 1992 and then started the Good Guys in Morayfield from scratch in 2001. Starting a business isn’t

easy, but with hard work and determination I grew them, employed dozens of locals and gave back to the community. ” Mr Young said. “I built a reputation as someone who was always willing to donate goods to various charities and sponsor local sporting teams. I’ve always believed in giving back to the community that supported me.” As a father to four kids, Terry knows how difficult it can be for young people to get into good, secure jobs locally. “Our area has always had high unemployment, that’s why I’m happy to be part of an LNP team that has provided $10 million in funding for an expansion at the local saw mill, creating new jobs right here.” “I support the new ICE rehab facility that the LNP Government is funding and believe that we need to do more to deal with crim in our area.” “I was raised in this community and I understand the issues we’re facing. My commitment is to get out and listen to as many people as I can.”

Mr Crisafulli was impressed with the level of detail in the plans and believes this is set to become a tourist destination of international status. “What I have seen today during my visit is nothing short of inspiring, Mr

Crisafulli said

Beachmere Drone Field gets the Go Ahead Local Beachmere photographer and drone enthusiast Jessica Culley has had a win for all drone enthusiasts with the recent decision by Moreton Bay Regional Council to allow an area at the Rogers Street Sports Ground to be used as a drone flying field. Also the council have stated that any parks can be used for drone flying in the Moreton Bay Shire – unless signed otherwise. “The Civil Aviation Safety Authority have guidelines for safe and legal flights, which are mandated by law. You can’t just go out and fly, there are rules to be followed,” Jessica said.

“Drones have become an important part of the business world with drones being used for a multitude of tasks including shark spotting, and in meteorology, mining, fire service, policing and surf lifesaving.”

Jessica is most enthused with how drones can make a difference in people’s lives with studies showing flying a drone can reduce depression and encourage people with limited mobility improved quality of life. Drone flying is now being taught in some schools to help encourage girls into STEM. “By allowing people to practice flying drones in a designated area, it will give them a safe place away from houses to fly and hone their skills, and encourage people to learn the rules and obligations required.

It can also support local business by bringing additional visitors to the local area,” Jessica said.

“I think MBRC is being very pro active by supporting this burgeoning hobby and becoming a leader in an area that is likely to become a large employer in the future.” “I would encourage anyone with an interest in drones to learn the rules and their responsibilities as a drone flyer and always fly safely.”

Tips on how to identify what you want in a property Knowing what you want in a property before you start can save you a lot of time. If you set yourself a clear criteria, you will find searching for a property much easier as you will be able to eliminate properties immediately that do not suit your needs. Some important questions to ask yourself when setting your criteria include: •

•

What can you afford: calculate the deposit and repayments you can afford. Deposit requirements will vary, but as a rule of thumb, at least ten per cent of the selling price will be required. In general, lenders usually base the amount they will loan you on the rule that monthly repayments do not exceed a quarter of gross (pre-tax) income. What are your location priorities: identify the areas or communities that suit your lifestyle and the people living with you (shortlist two or three suburbs). Assess your need for transport, schools, sports facilities, easy shopping, etc. It is also important to research

•

which suburbs are becoming more fashionable because of new developments, or have easy access to facilities and work centres.

What type of a house will suit your needs: decide if you are looking for a flat, apartment, townhouse or house. The floor plan is a major consideration, so you need to decide how many bedrooms and bathrooms are required, if you need formal and informal living areas, the size of the kitchen, if you require a high or low maintenance garden, the size of the garage or carport and if you require a study.

To Post or Not to Post

For many people social media is a part of their daily lives and over the last decade it has become more and more popular. Social media shows itself in many different forms: Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter and Instagram; just to name a few. It has been argued time and time again that these social media sites are completely harmless to the next generation, however, others see this as a lie and believe social media to be a harmful virus, especially in the wrong hands. With the debate continuing, it remains unclear whether or not this rapidly developing technology is completely safe for everyone, especially the younger generation. Recently, Instagram has quietly been picking up traction mostly thanks to everybody's new obsession with photography, but what is it and how is it different from other sites? It's like a simplified version of Facebook, where you can interact with other users on Instagram by following them, being followed by them, commenting, liking, tagging and private messaging. You can even save the photos you see on Instagram. First established on the 6th of October 2010, Instagram has developed into the popular social media site it is today with 15 times more users than Facebook and 20 times more users than Twitter. For many years Instagram limited their users to squareborder photos only. This restriction was a bit of a pest but was mainly seen as an Instagram signature. In the Spring of 2015 (Northern Hemisphere),

the debate of square-borders verses rectangle-borders begun. August 2015, the change was made, and Instagram users adapted very well, as they produce higher quality imagery. Today, you can post both directly through the app and from existing photos/videos on your device. You can also post both photos and videos up to one full minute in length, with filter options plus the ability to tweak and edit your photos. Like many of its kind, Instagram is an ever-growing social network making an ever-lasting impact on society and the world. What is the appeal of photos over the use of words? The old saying rings true ‘A picture is worth a thousand words’. Unlike text or links that have to be read or investigated first, pictures provoke an immediate reaction. The viewer gets more satisfaction and emotion from a visual than they do from words. This is also a successful platform for businesses with over 2 million businesses using Instagram to flaunt their products. But, the negative side of the argument is also powerful with a recent study of almost 1,500 teens and young adults, stating that Instagram is the worst social media network for mental health. While the social media platform was recognised for self-expression and identity, it was also associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and the “fear of missing out.” So the debate of social media and its effects still remain, but when in doubt – take the picture! The worst that can happen is a phone full of memories.

The building project is nearing completion with internal finishes being finalised. The school is intending to move into the new premises in November. More good news is the approval for Classes 7-10. Three new classrooms are scheduled to be built in 2019!

Should standardized testing be abolished?

For many students standardized testing has become the expected norm when it comes to exam week, but is it doing more harm than good?

There are many pros and cons of standardized testing, a legitimate point as to why its not always fair takes form in special needs or non-English speaking students. Australia is a very multi-cultural country, so it shouldn’t come as a shock that English isn’t every students first language.

Between 1990 and 2003 the number of foreign students enrolled in Australian education institutions rose from 24,998 to 210,397. For such a high number of foreign students in places like university, where standardized testing is the most commonly run test, they will struggle to cope as standardized tests require all test takers to answer the same set of questions. So, students with a lack of English skills must answer the same questions as somebody with the polar opposite skillset, with no exceptions.

brain does not happen until the third decade of life. As the developing brain is far more sensitive to the chemical processes involved while mediating a stressful event. In the minds of teens, grades play such an important role. Our grades affect our future and for many that’s a very daunting statement, so the fact that every student must answer the same set of questions, no matter how disadvantaged compared to others in their class, is not only unfair but deteriorating to some student’s future. Should standardized testing be abolished? In the sense that its not only unfair but unchangeable is ridiculous, specialised tests should be made for non-English speaking students and special needs students. Less stress should be put on such young minds as children as young as twelve should not have to worry about their future at such a young age.

The stress that is put on young students is outrageous, particularly junior high school students, where standardized testing overrules. In order to understand how stress can be very detrimental to the mind of a young person, it is important to have some understanding of what happens to the body when the brain triggers a stress response. It is equally important to bear in mind that full maturation of the

Foxies Take Over Beachmere Birali Steiner School Beachmere to move into their much larger new premises

The Group of Mini Foxies at Beachmere Dog Park

Brand new classroom

As part of this trend, Birali is growing quickly, and three more classrooms are expected to be built in 2019. The school has received accreditation through to Class 10 and has applied for Pre-prep for the beginning of 2019. The vision has always been to provide an education for the head, heart and hands through to Class 12. There is a growing worldwide demand for this form of education. There are over 1000 schools and almost 2000 kindergartens in over 60 countries, with 47 schools in Australia. Steiner Schools are increasingly seen as an education for the future and are growing in reputation for developing well balanced, creative, collaborative, confident students. Birali is a member of Steiner Education Australia: https://www.steinereducation. edu.au, the peak body for Steiner Schools in Australia (SEA). In a recent independent national research survey conducted for SEA, this reputation was confirmed. 85% of parents agreed that Steiner education developed the whole child. 98.1% of parents surveyed valued the arts-based approach to learning, which promotes confidence, creative thinking and love of learning. Year 9-12 students were surveyed and 77% were very happy and fulfilled at school; 88% of students believed that, ‘teachers know me’. These are solid indicators of a high level of well-being, which in turn is correlated with strong academic and

In the Primary School, the Class Teacher welcomes the children into class 1 and then continues with them throughout the Primary grades building a very strong relationship between teacher, child and parents. This promotes well developed social/ emotional resilience and cultivates a healthy feeling life.

Birali is expecting even stronger growth following the move to the permanent site. For 2019 there are currently limited spaces available P-7.

In the tour, you will see and find out more about some of the distinguishing features of Steiner Schools. These include the balance between academic, artistic and practical work. In the Early Childhood curriculum, self-directed free play, cooking, puppet plays, stories, art and craft foster the imagination and build practical skills.

Chris Jack, Principal, has seen the school grow from 8 students to a school bursting at the seams. People are moving interstate to enrol their children and more locals are taking advantage of this alternative educational approach on their doorstep. The Birali Steiner School Community are preparing to move in November to the new site on the corner of Beachmere Road and Newman Road after more than 5 years in the Beachmere Community Hall. Locals would have noticed the extensive upgrade on Beachmere Road and the hive of activity on Newman Road.

Beachmere Small Dog Park recently hosted a Puppy Playdate for Miniature Foxies. Lisa Curran of LAC Foxies “supervised” 34 beautiful mini foxies, all off leash and having a wonderful time together. Beachmere has enjoyed five of these afternoons so far, with more events planned and new friends attending every time. These play dates allow for valuable socialization for the dogs and networking between their animal loving owners. The playdates have received lots of positive feedback, with shy dogs coming out of their shells and gaining confidence and social skills. Lisa is very passionate about this breed of dog and is a registered breeder with the Mini Foxie Club of Australia (MFCA). The MFCA has very high standards, ensuring that all dogs are a high quality, well-bred, healthy and with lovely temperaments. Lisa will continue to host these events to spread awareness of the breed and the MCFA club; as well as encouraging like-minded people to come together and enjoy the afternoon in beautiful Beachmere.

Simply a National Disgrace… By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings.

[The words below are matters of opinion. No specific criticism is implied or directed at the Queensland Police Service, any particular Magistrate or Judge. The comments are general, based on observations of reality.]

they can pronounce their interpretation of justice. Long gone are the days of black letter law; assault means assault, murder means murder: this is now the age of therapeutic justice. Courts, not all of them by any means, but enough, are occupied by, unelected, and therefore not publicly responsible, magistrates and judges who have assumed the mantle of community saviours. Perhaps out of necessity, who knows? But it seems as if all social problems and various other tedious and troublesome matters can be dealt with by counselling, diversionary programs and undertakings by

Once, perhaps twice per week, Australian women are bashed, harassed or murdered by their partners/ husbands, who are free to do so…… because they have been bailed from Court by activist magistrates and judges, who are practising therapeutic justice.

The world in which these justice officials inhabit, is not troubled by the brutal reality of the day to day struggle for existence by women who live alone and who try to raise children, work, have some kind of social life, and, who have ever-present in their minds and souls the coiled spring of fear……’ will he come tonight ? ‘, ‘ will he find me here? ‘, ‘ what will I do when he smashes the down the door? ‘, ‘ will the Police make it in time ?’. No Sir, these officials inhabit the land of small towers and balconies from which

Member for Longman Susan Lamb meets the team at Hairdressers with Hearts

Last month Susan Lamb MP met with the board members of Hairdressers with Hearts, Ms Lamb asked board member’s how Hairdressers with Hearts initiative started? Sonia Colvin Founder of Hairdressers with Hearts (HwH) said “It was listening to my clients when they came in to get their hair done. There is so many terrible stories I hear from my clients. I know it was abuse, however I didn’t have any information on Domestic Violence or know how to help them, now I do! And this was from researching the services that are available to victims. I want to encourage every hairdresser to get on board as well”. Sonia explained to Susan that she now knows where to refer her clients to when she feels that they are being abused. Sonia and Hair 4507 salon are now equipped with information to assist her clients and anyone that will walk into her salon that may need some help.

Susan said “this is a wonderful initiative and Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse affects our whole community in so many ways; health, financially, socially, economically and much more. This is a nationwide society issue” Susan congratulated Sonia and the board on tackling such a huge issue in the way she is doing it.

Susan assured Sonia she would write to her colleagues about Hairdressers with Hearts initiative to encourage other federal members to speak to their local hairdressers to get on board and link up with their local domestic violence groups in all regions in Australia.

law will protect our citizens as they go about their lawful daily lives. And, generally speaking, that is what they do. And, they do it well.

But, we know, because we see it in the print and electronic media, that a significant part of that contract has been breached! Women have been raped and murdered by serial rapists on bail !! Women are regularly abused and killed by men, their ex-partners or husbands/de factos who are on bail !! Assaults beyond sensible

threatened as gangs of disaffected youths from African countries rampage through Victoria on occasions, and weird loners drive motor vehicles through crowds of people. The Victorian Police appear frustrated and angry at the way that State’s Court system seems to run a revolving door of bail applications, recently addressed by establishing a night Court! Social heads

crusading journalists, talking on our TV screens find ways of justifying everything………….none of this is anyone’s fault, no one is responsible except the vague concept of ‘ the Government ‘ and the solution is more money must be spent to fix it !! Our money.

I say too many empty words have been spoken: too many nonsense enquiries have been conducted: too much froth and bubble has been spread about.

But.

defence lawyers, on behalf of their clients.

In our communities there exists an iron law. There is a social contract between the massive number of citizens who live their lives according to the law of our land and the elected Governments of our nation. The substance of the contract is that the justice system, the law enforcement agencies and the other instruments of the

counting, are committed by young, alcoholfuelled men on bail for previous assaults. And, so goes…………………………………………………?

Communities are beginning to complain. Our Court system, objectively speaking, overloaded; deliver a form of therapeutic justice comprising diversionary programs, rehabilitation houses, focus groups, ‘ happy clapping ‘, rather than the application of black letter law. Large numbers of our citizens feel

A valid acceptance exists in our society that justice should not be about retribution; justice should be about rehabilitation and prevention of recidivism.

Well, that is fine, and Winston Churchill’s words stand unchallenged ‘ that you can judge a society by the way it treats its prisoners ‘ We have moved on from the squalid prisons and systemic violence; our prisons are useful and provide society precisely what they are designed to do.

I say that it is time to stop the therapeutic justice, apply the laws as written and demand that Governments hold the justice system to account.

Hairdressers with Hearts really need funding to employ a person to assist with their calendar, which is made up of training sessions for Hairdressers, raising funds to support the victims, creating awareness events in our region. Ms Lamb will assist with applying for grants and she has also offered to bring awareness of HwH initiative in the Federal Parliament. Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse is a far bigger issue nationwide than most of us realise, and Hairdressers with Hearts is well on the way to achieving their goal to get as many hairdressers on board. Sonia has assisted 89 women and men since she started Hairdressers with Hearts over 3 years ago.

Almost every Hairdresser has heard at least one awful story from their clients about abuse in their own homes, their family members home or even if it is just a friend that is going through abuse. It really does make sense for all our Hairdressers to be equipped with information to assist the victims, with well over 60 women this year or at least 2 a week who have died from domestic violence, Sonia is determined to help all victims nationwide and she would like to see Hairdressers get on board with this initiative. She wants every hairdresser to be equipped with information to hand out to their clients.

Fiona from Centre Against Domestic Violence, Sonia Colvin Founder of HwH, Susan Lamb, Member for Longman and Aunty Marg (victim of Elder Abuse and now a volunteer at HwH.

The issue of Domestic Violence and Elder Abuse is absolutely everywhere in Australia and Hairdressers with Hearts is rapidly catching on in South East of Queensland.

How you can Help

Donations are always welcome, become a volunteer and spread the word about Hairdressers with Hearts, talk to your hairdresser to see if they are interested in joining Hairdressers with Heart. You can contact Michelle on 0418 898 082 for more information.

Welcome to December 2018 numerology beautiful souls and the 5 energy. The last month of this 11 universal year will see the benefit of all the experiences and lessons of this entire year. So, looking back for just a moment, what a powerful year of wake ups and break ups this universal 11 year has been. The insights and epiphanies that many of us have had, I’m sure have been equally matched by saying goodbye to situations and people that no longer serve a purpose in our lives. The exciting result of all we have learnt throughout this year brings personal freedom. An adventurous and fun month lies ahead, if you have been doing all your universal homework. The 5 energy dislikes routine and boredom, so be prepared to be challenged and pushed to take risks. This is not the time to be controlled or measured, you can trust the situations that come to you this month as the 5 energy is loyal and will not let you down. If there is any doubt tap into your intuition, that first thought that

comes to mind will usually give you the answer. Be wise about where you invest your time and energy this month. Time spent with people that inspire you to be the best version of yourself is where it is all at. Those people that make you literally sparkle, your tribe, they are there to feed your soul. Expect a few hangovers, as overindulging in anything including alcohol, along with excess is the downfall of the 5. December is usually the party month with the wind up of the work and school year, and this December will be supercharged. Hydration, exercise, sleeping and eating well in between parties will certainly be your friend. Tie up the loose ends of the year by deciding what to take with you into the new year and shed anything that has been dragging you down. Clearing out is not only for your cupboards. Create the space for new and exciting situations. Optimism, growth and abundance are yours. Have a fabulously fun December, Michelle For your personal 2019 Numerology chart email littleGreekgirl@live.com

Letters to the Editor...continued from page 2 Dear Editor With reference to the anonymous Letter to the Editor (Issue 30) concerning the recent official launch of Hairdressers With Hearts. It was disappointing to read the comments in regards to my attendance at the launch. Whilst it was regrettable that this event coincided with another long standing commitment I had in the community, I had always hoped that time would prevail so I could arrive at some point, albeit it a little late, to show my support. And I was very pleased to join the launch immediately after my other community engagement finished. I am a great supporter of local initiatives, particularly those seeking to make our community a better and more safe place to live. This is why I was very pleas ed to raise funds for Hairdressers with Hearts this past year and proud to speak in Parliament during my Maiden Speech about Sonia and her instrumental role in founding Hairdressers with Hearts, giving a helping hand to victims of domestic violence and elder abuse. I am grateful that most locals understand that I will always do my level best to attend as many events on weekends as possible, even if this means arriving a little late on the odd occasion. I take this opportunity to wish Hairdressers With Hearts the very best with their endeavours which, knowing Sonia, will amount to great things for our community. SIMONE WILSON MP State Member for Pumicestone

Sir, I loved some of the marvellous images created by Cranky Lizard, and agree with his general conclusions - the pollies aren’t on the same wave length as the rest of us. However, there are two points of opinion in his diatribe which are not widespread. There is no such thing as “common sense” - what one believes is always based on one’s education, even if it involved trial and error. In this modern age we should base our behaviour on the knowledge that has been discovered over the last few centuries about the way nature works, not look back to ancient myths. With current information, it is easy to see that the solid lines, which our forebears drew separating the sexes, are now completely out of date. And history shows that homosexuality has been round for centuries. Likewise, simple logic can inform the climate debate for those willing to listen. Two factors demonstrate the conclusion: (1) John Tyndall discovered in 1859 that a small amount of carbon dioxide, in a mixture of gases, is responsible for the higher temperature of that mixture compared to one lacking carbon dioxide, when they are exposed to sunlight. This has been confirmed more recently. (2) Since the nineteenth century, man has been digging up carbon fuels buried for millions of years and burning them. How could this NOT

add to atmospheric carbon dioxide? It doesn’t require looking at graphs, or any other scientific data, or to listen to any of the arguments on either side, to put together 2 and 2, and come up with 4. Q.E.D. Man is responsible for global warming H.Beneke It was an honor to be the Master of Ceremonies at the launch of "Hairdressers with Hearts". As MC , part of my duties was to announce the apologies.and I took note that all of the representatives from the three levels of governments had prior engagements on our launch date, which was unfortunate. I announced that our Federal Member Susan Lamb was unable to attend, however her representative ,Tyson was there and I welcomed him. Our State Member Simone Wilson informed me that she had a prior engagement, however she said she would be a late arrival to our function. Our Local Councillor, Brooke Savage was unable to attend and sent her best wishes. It was late, but pleasing to see Simone was able to make our launch and show her support on this very important day.. I thanked Simone and welcomed her when she arrived. I believe "ALL" three ladies support Hairdressers with Hearts 100% as we all do support this very wonderful organisation All take care, cheers, Gary Parsons

Bite the Bullet When are the Federal and State Governments, along with the Local Council, going to bite the bullet and come up with a total solution for the rapidly increasing traffic problems affecting the connection of Bribie Island to Caboolture. The need is for an all weather dual carriage way for the total journey and that includes a duplicate bridge to the island. The current “band aid” solutions that have been applied, and or are proposed, only shift the congestion problems from one area to another. With the ever increasing population on the island and adjacent areas through housing developments, expansion of entertainment and resort facilities, together with holidaymakers and tourists, the existing road system easily reaches its capacity and becomes clogged resulting in frustrated motorists that in turn lead to dangerous driving practices. This problem has become evident for a number of years, progressively getting worse, but the authorities have either ignored it or put in the “too hard” basket until now when it has become a major problem. We need action and a solution now, not in two to five years time, so the access problem to and from the island can be in place and completed by 2023/2024 and definitely 2025 at the latest. On the Paddock By Tom Brown

The Money Grab Wow – I thought that Cricket Australia (CA) would have read my October edition of ‘On the Paddock’ and moved to end the relentless hype about those couple of cricketers that it suspended last year – I guess if you decide to suspend players based on your own standards and not those of the world governing body (In this case the ICC), you should expect nothing else but a protracted media feeding frenzy. I promised myself that I would end this cricket commentary and move onto something more ‘female sport.’ You can rest your mind because next month will be all about our National Women’s Soccer Team, the Matilda’s (Ranked 5th in the world) and their Head Coach, Alen Stajcic – stay tuned.

In the mean time I have few more words to put out there before we end the ‘Cricket Suspension Saga.’ I refer to Peter Lalor’s Article in the Australian Newspaper (17th November 2018), entitled, ‘Smith and Warner’s $1.6M blow.’ If you can get your hands on a copy of this article, it’s worth reading. Effectively it references a new set of guidelines for releasing Contracted Australian Cricket players to play in the IPL (Indian Premier League) – this means that Sheffield Shield Players will not be able to attend the IPL until after the final round of the Sheffield Shield. The article also points out that any Australian Player chosen for the 2019 World Cup Squad will be required to attend a training camp in early May 2019. The Australian Newspaper was of the understanding that this means that an Australian IPL Player chosen to join the World Cup Squad will need to leave India (IPL) at the start of May 2019 – effectively missing a third of the IPL Tournament which is reported to equate to a loss to Smith and Warner of approximately $800,00 each. This leads me to pose a few questions: How much money is a reasonable salary? What value is there to represent your country? Should our governing body acknowledge the IPL schedule and include this within the Australian Cricketing Calendar – thus making it workable for Australian Cricketers to play across the world all year round? One of the concerns that appears to hamper Cricket Australia is that instead of cricketers taking a break from the game in an off-season, the players are chasing short-term overseas cricket contracts. This is not a new challenge to CA or the Australian Cricketers Association, however at a very basic level of employment, anyone has the right to

Website/Tickets https://www.icc-cricket.com/cricket-world-cup https://www.cricket.com.au/ashes https://www.rugbyworldcup.com/?lang=en https://ausopen.com www.afl.com.au www.nrl.com https://supernetball.com.au http://www.sanzarrugby.com www.supercars.com/bathurst1000 www.grandprix.com.au https://www.a-league.com.au/

chase a job or contract. The dilemma for CA is that they have significant investment in the players and the outcomes of cricket and we as punters want to see high profile players taking to the pitch – the problem is that CA pays too much money to a few hero’s without spreading the love and throwing new talent into the ring. What’s the answer? The solution is to

contract Australian Cricketers to play cricket in Australia based on terms that are specifically about sport in Australia. If a contracted player thinks he/she can top up their family bank account by $1M in the off-season and this affects their off-season recovery and reconditioning program in accordance with a contract, then CA should release them from the Contract regardless of status. I can only think of one word, ‘Greed.’

November Fishing Report

TIDE TIMES FOR NOVEMBER 2018

Fishing success around Bribie Island has picked up considerably in the past month. October’s bad weather, and the windy days that followed, have given way to fairly regular evening storms. This has seen an increase in bait-fish numbers, along with enough water turbidity to make it an easier job to entice the fish with your hook.

Times and heights of high and low waters 10ʼ e° 22ʼ s long 153°lat 27 Australia, East Coast – BRISBANE BAR

Rising air pressure often makes fish keener. Bream, in particular, are sensitive to rapid weather changes and like high air pressure after 2-3 days of south-easterlies. Rick managed to pick

Addison wanted to take this bream home, to keep as a pet but Rick decided to give it back to the ocean. At 38cm, it was probably about 10 years old. Caught on squid, just south of the bridge, and now a resident of Spinnaker Sound Marina. up a 38cm bream, south of the bridge, using squid. Jimmy and Charlie enjoyed a good day out, bringing with them some good bream. The best of them were found near Turner’s camp, also using squid on a falling tide. If these regular afternoon storms become standard through into summer, bream-fishing is going to be good fun. The flathead are hungry, and you can find them all through the Passage. Squid and pilchards have been the favoured baits for flathead but soft plastic lures are certainly working, in spite of the murky water. The better areas to use lures are around the creek mouths; cast out during a light outgoing tide and the flathead should be waiting there for you. There have been some good flathead catches around the bridge, again on the turn of tide. The fishing at the bridge has been pretty consistent over the past couple of weeks, as can be seen by the number of fishers casting over the side! We’ve had reports that there have been good schools of trevally under and south of the bridge. Plenty of bream and whiptails have also been caught there. Whiptails are those lovely slender fish, with a tinge of blue and a yellow stripe along the side. Apparently not bad eating, they never grow very big; around 25cm would be the usual size we see around here. That’s probably the main reason why they’re not so popular, although there is no size or catch limit. They don’t mind a bit of squid and if you catch one there’s a good chance you will catch a few. Talking of squid-bait, there have been big squid taken lately, 3ocm and more, on standard fishing set-ups. A lot of the squid have been around the bridge or just south of it, near the jetty. Jacko has been telling us the mangrove

Jimmy and Charlie were more interested in their icypoles than the two-lovely bream in the bucket. Kathy caught them both, up near Turner's Camp, on the falling tide, using squid.

Claudio and his mates knew where to put their crab pots - south of Pacific Harbour. jacks have been keeping him busy, up in Ningi and Elimbah Creeks. There have been some biggies among them – 3040cm in length. Also further up the Passage, there have been some really good catches of summer whiting. It seems the further north you go, the better chance of getting onto a school of whiting and they are already good sized ones. Further north still, Richard, Ron and Stuart went a out a bit off the north end of Bribie, ocean-side. Ron came home empty-handed, having only hooked a red emperor that was 10cm short of legal. However, the other two caught a 4kg snapper, a 7kg cobia and a nice bag of varied reef-fish. Sand crabbing has continued to be a bit erratic; lots of hopeful pots out in the Passage but not often good news when they get pulled up. With the big tides , especially over the recent new moon, a few of the pots began to wander from their original positions. It can be very difficult to find your pot, if you’ve dropped it in one place and it decides to move on! Make sure you have plenty of

line out to the float and try not to leave the crab pot where the strongest tidal flow moves. It’s also a popular (and not silly idea) to pop half a brick in, to weigh it down. Lastly, remember the tag – if it is clearly marked with your name and phone number, it might be returned to you, if it does get a little lost.

I’M FIGHTING FOR A NEW BRIDGE FOR BRIBIE The Bribie Island Bridge was built in 1963 and remains the only road link connecting Bribie Island to the mainland. In addition to this being our only link on and off the Island, a raft of vital utility infrastructure is connected to the Bridge including power, telecommunications and water. These essential services keep our community thriving and needless to say, the economy of Bribie Island depends on the bridge, we all do!

our Ambos, Police and Firies in attending emergencies – the case for a second four lane bridge is indisputably clear cut.

In 2014, when the LNP was in Government we undertook the Bribie Island Bridge Duplication Concept Planning and Report to determine requirements for the future duplication of Bribie Island Bridge. We also secured the land either side on the northern side of the existing bridge. This work has been done thanks to the former LNP Member Lisa France, but nothing more has progressed since Labor has been in Government.

I am calling on the State Government to make this a priority in next years’ budget so that funding is allocated to progress this important piece of infrastructure for

It is no news to locals that congestion on the bridge has now reached crisis point. We see this particularly on busy weekends when thousands flock to the Island, making it near impossible to move around without becoming trapped in grid lock. Add to this the events of a few weeks ago when a three car accident on the bridge shut down traffic for over an hour, not to mention the difficulties faced each day for

Unfortunately, if the Palaszczuk Government has its way (and going on current performance with snail pace on the Bribie Island Road upgrade), it will be 2038 before we are likely to see even a hint of action on a new bridge. We need Government’s commitment on a new four land bridgenow – not in 20 years.

Pumicestone. And I will be seeking the same commitment from my Party, the LNP, as I am so strongly committed to delivering this new bridge for Pumicestone.
