Welcome to issue 30 Readers and advertisers. This issue, advertisers/ clients, contributors and readers have asked me if the ISLAND and Surrounds owns any other businesses in this region which may be a conflict of interest to my clients. I would like to make it very clear that ISLAND and Surrounds will never purchase a business that is in competition to any of our clients. Our business is a newspaper, we also have an advertising agency called Pumicestone Creative and the Meander Map. This is the only business that the ISLAND and Surrounds has any interest in. Clients and readers are extremely important to the Team of TIAS, without our valued clients we would not be able to produce this newspaper. The only way we can provide the readers and clients with a quality good read newspaper, is focus on our business and what we do best. The clients know their business and are skilled and experts in their field, service or product. TIAS will never compete with any of our clients for space in the paper, our paper is for the community, our local businesses and to increase the economy buy supporting all our clients and not competing against them. Enough said about this matter. Last issue we introduced a new flexiad, where there is no lock in contracts for our advertisers, however there are conditions. Please call me to enquire more about this if you are considering advertising. We are moving very quickly into the world of digital with introducing QR codes to your adverts. Please see more information about this in the paper. Warm regards Belinda Ferguson

Dear Editor, Hairdressers with Hearts Launch was fantastic day. On Saturday, 13th October, I attended a wonderful function at the Serenity Restaurant, for the official launch of Hairdressers with Hearts, which was attended by more than 200 guests. I was appalled to see that the three levels of government were all invited to attend, and we didn’t see any of them for such very important day nationally for one of their constituents, unfortunately not one of the elected politicians thought so. That was fairly ordinary, I thought! However, Susan Lamb did send her representative Tyson. He also said if Hairdressers with Hearts needed any assistance from Susan Lamb he would ensure they would get it and Susan was behind this charity 100%. It was disappointing Simone Wilson, did not show up for the main part of the Launch which was mentioned by a lot of the people who attended. She eventually turned up about 4.00 pm and stayed for no longer than 10 minutes and left. By that time the afternoon was nearly over and many of us missed chatting to her. It would have also been nice to see our state Minister for domestic violence Di Famer there on the day too. Just a shame that our local Pollies couldn’t make it to a very important day to not only for our community, but for Australia. A concerned voter. Sir, Thank you for the comprehensive coverage of our main roundabout. Another thing that causes problems is that too many people don’t know the meaning of “Give Way”. The signs are used so that people don’t have to stop - it really means “stop, if there is a danger of collision”. It doesn’t mean “stop if there is anyone else on the roundabout, or intending to enter it on your right”! People who do stop unnecessarily risk being tail-ended, because the following driver is watching to the right, instead of in front. H.Beneke
Re: Issue 29. Political Correctness.
Excellent article. Keep up the good work. Too much Bullshit in this country today. I say it like I always have and refuse to be censored. Regards Cranky Old Fart.? Letter to the Editor TRUST OUR STRAWBERRY FARMERS There is nothing more devastating to food producers than having their produce tampered with. During this abominable time of crisis for our local strawberry farmers, there is nothing that lifts their spirits more than having the full support of their community behind them. During my visits to local farms over the past week, it has been so encouraging to see hundreds of locals out picking their own strawberries - and I know George from Oasis Berries on Bribie Island
Road has been so taken by this support. It is also wonderful to see our local fruitos stocking their shelves with local produce for us all to buy and enjoy. The message I am sending to residents of Pumicestone is to trust our local strawberry farmers. Whilst they continue to deal with this situation brought upon them, they have taken every measure to ensure the fruit they produce is safe and delicious. We must still cut our strawberries but we must never stop buying them. The LNP was first to call on the State Government to help our strawberry farmers in this time of need and we will be first to ensure they are not left to deal with this crisis alone. I have been posting some strawberry inspired recipes on my Facebook page (@SimoneWilsonMP), including delicious Strawberry and White Chocolate Mousse and a very refreshing Strawberry Lemonade. Why not check these out and share your recipes too. Thank you Pumicestone for standing alongside our strawberry farmers in their time of need. Let’s continue to show them how much we care. SIMONE WILSON MP, State Member for Pumicestone
Letter to the Editor
State Labor snubs our health needs
‘The need to travel for urgent care, that could be provided in the community, is problematic and the impact on individuals and their families is significant’. These are not my words but those of the Chief Executive of Metro-North Hospital and Health Services, Shaun Drummond in regards to my calls on the State Labor Government to fund extended urgent care health services on Bribie Island. Unfortunately, this is where the support ends. Despite the fact that Bribie Island has an ageing population and last year accounted for approximately 10 per cent of presentations to the Caboolture Hospital’s emergency department, this week in State Parliament, the Minister for Health, Steven Miles, took aim at me for advocating on your behalf for better health services. In what can only be described as a most repugnant display of opportunistic politicking, the Palaszczuk Labor Government once again has shown that unless you vote for them, you don’t count. For the Minister for Health to mock and deride my letter on the floor of Parliament this week, to stand there laughing, shaking a copy of my letter around as nothing more than a scrap of paper not worthy of his consideration is a monumental disgrace. There is a time and place for wise guys, but there's no room for them whatsoever when it comes to the health and wellbeing of Queenslanders. All the Minister has shown is that he does not wish to work with me on providing better health care for my aging constituents, but I will never give up the fight. SIMONE WILSON MP, State Member for Pumicestone

With Damian Brown 4 WE’RE HERE FOR YOU! When George Him and his family escaped the tournament of the raging Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in 1979, they had no idea of what future lay ahead. Fleeing Cambodia transformed a successful middle-class Cambodian Family living in the province of Takeo, approximately 75 kilometers south west of Phnom Penh, into a group of desperate refugees stuck in a United Nations Refugee Camp fighting for an unknown future. At that time, George was 5 years old – these days George Him and his brother, Thai own and operate their company, Oasis Berries, located in Caboolture, Queensland and in Stanthorpe on the border of New

Living the Dream
George with his brother Thai South Wales. I had the pleasure of meeting George Him to gain a firsthand look at the man, the family and his business. I started out wanting to meet a Strawberry Farmer and compose a good news story about a local business and family man. As it turns out, I was gifted a first-hand account of how George Him and his family transitioned from Cambodia into the Australian Culture in a period where racism was rife, opportunity abundant and our banks were lending money at a staggering 18% interest. Unfortunately, I was also exposed to the story of the 2018 Strawberry Needle Event that placed George’s Company into temporary shutdown after being incorrectly named by New South Wales Authorities – an event that George Him describes as worse than escaping Cambodia. To understand the journey of George Him, we need to take a snapshot look at history to discover how and why George and his family found themselves in Australia. It was the years 1975-1979 when a murderous Communist Regime called, Khmer Rouge moved through from North Vietnam into Cambodia and killed 21% of Cambodia’s population. The Khmer Rouge was derived from the formation of the Communist Party of Kampuchea - the leader of the Khmer Rouge was in infamous Pol Pot. The aim of the Khmer Rouge was to turn Cambodia into an Agrarian Utopia (With a value based on a rural society that was superior to urban society and the independent farmer as superior to the paid worker).
When the Khmer Rouge finally took over the capital of Cambodia, Phnom Penh in 1975, they set about cleansing the capital of what they termed, ‘The Undesirable New People’ influenced by foreign values and those that do not support an Agrarian Society. The targeted demographic included the educated middle class, lawyers, doctors, business people and those with alternate political views. At that time over 2.5 million people lived in the capital Phnom Penh and to create a farming utopia, they drove the population out of the cities and into the fields – everyone was driven out – houses, schools and hospitals were emptied and driven into the countryside. The Khmer Rouge believed Cambodia had to start at Year Zero and create a ‘Farming Utopia’they needed to progress with no outside influences – it is estimated that between 1-2 million people were killed or died in the countryside or what is now
Khao-I-Dang Refugee Camp (1980) Kim, Hout, Yaw (Mum), George, Simone, Thai
George’s Mum’s 75th Birthday – Family Simone, George, Yaw (Mum), Hout, Thai, Kim termed, The Killing Fields. Although controversial, it is said that this was one of the grisliest genocides in history. "What is rotten must be removed," read a popular Khmer Rouge slogan at the time, and remove they did, often by execution but sometimes simply by working people to death in the fields. As the Khmer Rouge took hold of Phnom Penh, George’s father was targeted and taken for what the Khmer Rouge termed, ‘re-education’– he was never seen again. His two brothers were also taken - one survived while the other did not.
Led by George’s mother, Yaw (Oung), their remaining family including one sister and four brothers decided to undertake one of the daring escapes across the jungles of Cambodia and into Thailand. Interestingly, the only currency for buying your way out of Cambodia was gold. George said, “During our time of hiding in Vietnam prior to our escape, Mum would travel to the Vietnam border to trade money for gold – sometimes Mum would be away for few weeks with one of my brothers – they worked hard to collect enough gold before we escaped back into Cambodia and across to Thailand. During our escape, Mum carried some gold with us and the rest was sewn into my crouch. As a 5-year-old, the pirates of the jungles rarely took children or interfered with mothers - it was only the men and girls that were often raped,
abused and pillaged during these daring escapes,” he said. “If only they had known that I was the most treasured commodity,” George laughs. “When we escaped, mum paid a number of men to escort us on the 4-5-day trek. We had to escape in two groups – the chances of us not making it in a large group was too risky so my three older brothers went first and all survived and my mum took myself and my sister, aged 5 and 8,” George said. “We almost didn’t make it – as you can imagine when you are walking for so many days, you have to carry food, pots and pans to cook along the way - it was the clanging sound of the pots that had us caught at the Thailand Border as we were cutting our way through the first of two border barbed wire fences,” he said. “Fortunately, mum had some gold left and after the prolonged abuse and questioning we were allowed across the border and into the refugee camp known as Khao-I-Dang Holding Centre. It was a shocking experience having to walk for days across booby-trapped jungles amongst such fear.” The Khao-I-Dang refugee camp is located 20 km north of Aranyaprathet in Prachinburi (now Sa Kaeo), a Province of Thailand. The camp was opened to Cambodian refugees in October 1979 and by the time it was closed in 1980, held more than 180,000 refugees. George and his family remained at Khao-I-Dang Refugee Camp for
almost 2 years – they were waiting for an opportunity to seek refugee places in France. One day the camp begun handing out application forms for relocation to Australia which was completely foreign to George’s family. In fact, they had no idea where Australia was, however his mum and brothers felt that this was the best option as it saved time waiting for a move to France and the rest is history.
In 1983, following a move to a secondary holding camp, George’s family departed for Melbourne. George says, “This was the best choice we ever made - we even managed to free another young boy who we called our brother. Most refugees did not have passports or identification. Everything relied on mum’s family knowledge of birth dates and names – therefore our family surname became ‘Him’ rather than our true surname, Lim.” Once in Melbourne, Georges family lived in Nunawading where George went to school and his brothers and mum found work on a local produce farm. George’s mum also opened a sweat shop and we all learned to sew making everything from t-shirts to costumes – they worked day and night, and all contributed. George said, “These were good times because we knew as a family that we were lucky to have such an opportunity – hard work was normal to us – escaping a war-torn country motivated us to stay together and re-create a life that my dad would have wanted for us. Only a refugee can understand what a refugee goes through - some outside people just thought we were queue jumpers or freeloaders”, George said. “I went to school in a period where racism was rife – I would get spat on at bus stops and called names – it was very hard to understand – I felt like an equal human being, but
Farm Manager, Norm, George and Thai my family were obviously viewed as a society blow-ins.”
The family were fortunate to meet an older Italian farming couple, Tony and Nellie who allowed them to work on their Strawberry Farm in Warrandyte, Melbourne. They established a 50/50 financial agreement that opened the world of Berry Farming to the family and in 1988 George’s family decided to buy a strawberry farm in Wandin, Victoria – they were able to loan $200k from the bank at 18% interest which they paid back within 12 months.
After leaving school, George forced himself into manhood and began the life of working a farm business with his family. At the age of 21, in 1998, George and his brother visited Queensland and located a farm on Saint Road, Ningi, Queensland. While George’s Brother returned to manage their Melbourne Farm, George set about building their berry farm enterprise in Queensland. George says, “I had no option but to work hard and create success – there was nowhere else to go – I couldn’t go back.”
Almost 39 years on, George now has his own family of 5 children (Aged from 6 years to 17) and lives in Caboolture. Their Company, Oasis Berries is a partnership between George and his Brother Thai and produces Strawberries and Raspberries. The farms which are strategically
PBPB
located across Queensland and NSW collectively produce over 600,000 trays of strawberries per year supplying fruit across Australia and New Zealand. While each farm employs a farm manager, George travels most weeks between farms to maintain quality and manage staff for the Oasis Berry Enterprise. George said, “The 2018 Strawberry Needle Event has taken a huge toll on my health, family and staff – we plan to re-build and see how we go. I was really touched by the way our local community rallied around us to support our community picking days, however I feel that our Government could have provided better guidance and support during this terrible experience,” he said. “You will be pleased to know that my mum, Yaw is enjoying retirement in Melbourne these days after losing her husband (my dad) and having her life ruined in 1975 by a senseless war and guiding her 6 children to safety and transitioning us into the Australia culture. My mum worked in our business for many years and even developed an Ice Factory back in Cambodia which is now closed – Her entrepreneurial spirit and strength lives on through our family today.”
George Him is a Special Australian – he sees no boundaries to effort, no end to resilience, no limits to pain, no option but humble, no end to personal growth and nothing greater than his love for his family – war and hardship has bonded his family – what an extraordinary opportunity to meet a beautiful man.

What is your message to people about living in multicultural society?
I think that if we start with the premise that we don’t choose our birthplace or the family we are born into, it creates a sense of human equality and hopefully allows us to understand each other better. We should try to be kind to each other and try to respect one another – there are no winners in war. If you see someone in need, go and help them because you never know what your future holds – my dad and mum thought we had a life and future in our home town in Cambodia. How do you describe your experience of raising a family in this local community?
Coming to Australia was the best thing that ever happened to us – we love being Australian and giving back to our community. Our children have an opportunity to contribute to society and enjoy and education in the ‘lucky country’ – Our community is everything to us.
Asia.
If you were to choose your favourite main course for dinner -what would it be?
I am a sucker for Singapore Chilli Crap in Singapore – amazing food. I love a BBQ steak, lamb cutlet or BBQ prawns -with salad of course.
What is the most challenging aspect of operating a large berry farm?
There are probably two main challenges – it is very hard to source people who actually want to work - especially considering that we employ over 200 people across our seasons on both farms. The second challenge is the negotiating a fair price for the fruit – it has become harder and harder to maintain a good price for our fruit, especially given the cost of production. What time of the year do you pick strawberries?
We operate a few different farms across – one of the border of New South Wales and in Queensland to ensure that we can supply strawberries across Australia all year. In Caboolture, the strawberry season runs from about June to November depending on the yield and quality of fruit. On our Stanthorpe farm near the border of New South Wales, we pick fruit across the summer – that season runs from about October – May. How did the 2018 Strawberry Needle Event affect you and your business?
The strawberry needle event has almost ruined me both physically and mentally. One day we were in full production with two months to go in the season, the next day our Brand, Oasis Berries was incorrectly named by health authorities – we lost over $300k worth of fruit through recall and destroyed crops – this has a flow-on affect for our staff and 2019 crops. We will not be able to invest the $1M necessary to replant a 2019 crop. Remember that this occurred mid production where we produce, pack and dispatch over 3000 trays of strawberries per day from just one farm – it has taken a serious effect on me. You can image the effect on any other business of this scale when someone cuts your business in 24 hours. It has been a very emotional and challenging time - probably worse than the war. How can locals support the Strawberry industry? The most effective thing that the local community can do is to ‘buy direct’ during the season – visit our packaging warehouse and buy the strawberries directly from our farm.

What do you do in your ‘spare time?
I love my kids – helping them with their homework and learning how to navigate technology. I do a lot of travelling managing my businesses - between family and work, my life is busy.
Do you ever travel back to Cambodia? I visited Cambodia for a family holiday in 2014 – we enjoy going back to visit

What was it like to receive your citizenship of Australia?
I received my Australian Citizenship on 26th January 1989 – I was so proud. Just like those who have come before us and settled in Australia, some privileged and some refugees, it is the best feeling to be an Australian and share the beautiful land. My dad would have been so proud of us sticking together and making something of our lives.

U3A campus
Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) has organised a Public Meeting to gauge interest, and gain support, to establish a U3A campus in Beachmere. BANG President, Karen Harris, said
Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club is defying convention, and latest trends, by actually increasing its member numbers over the last twelve months.
At their recent Biannual General Meeting the Committee was thanked by members for all the work undertaken in the last twelve months to progress the Club and co-ordinate all the bowls events over that time.
Club President, Bob Prosser, confirmed the Club was doing well, growing its members and providing increased opportunities to play bowls. He thanked the community, and the Moreton Bay Regional Council, for their support.
“With much discussion over the demise of Bowls Clubs generally, it is an indication of the support of the Beachmere community and the hard work of the Committee, that the club has continued to grow.”

Age and the U3A Queensland website says “Each U3A is a community organisation which promotes healthy aging by sharing educational, creative and leisure activities provided by their own members. We ask for no qualification for membership and we award no degrees or diplomas.”
“It’s a community initiative found all over the world. Tutors need no qualifications, just a sound knowledge of a particular subject and the wish to share that knowledge,” Karen said. “We have already had a number of people get in touch and offer to tutor classes, just as we have had many people ask for classes in a subject they are interested in.”
“We have the support of both Bribie and Caboolture U3A and, with their support, and the residents of Beachmere, we hope to get the first classes running for first term 2019,” Karen said.
Thanks also go to our local Councillor, Peter Flannery, for his continued support and his assistance in bringing the Council on board to help with maintenance issues and just generally supporting the Club”
Bob also extended his thanks, on behalf of the entire Committee, to the members of the Club who are always willing to offer their assistance, “muscle” and support with fixtures, game set up and with everything from weeding to packing up equipment. Check out the Club’s new facebook page, pop down on any Thursday or Sunday for a game or find out how to learn to play bowls.
Anyone wanting to join the club should send an email to the Secretary BCLBC at bclbcinc@gmail.com or visit the club at the Beachmere RSL in Main Road, Beachmere.
From left Ann Brooks, VP Bribie U3A and Karen Harris, President BANG U3A campuses at both Bribie Island and Caboolture were at, or near, capacity and it was a sensible decision to start a campus in Beachmere.
“A number of Beachmere residents travel to Bribie or Caboolture to tutor or attend classes. It is only sensible that we should alleviate the demand on those campuses and give Beachmere locals a campus of it’s very own,” Karen said. U3A stands for University of the Third
The Public Meeting will be held on Tuesday, 30 October at 2pm at the ex RSL / Bowls Club in Main Street, Beachmere. For further information email info@bang.org. au or call 0456 818 017.

2018 - Issue 30 islandandsurrounds.com.au
November 2018
When Cranky Lizard began this adventure, some twelve months ago, a promise was made that public arrogance, bureaucratic pedantry, political nonsense and other public nuisance which affected the quality of life in our community would be mercilessly exposed. Not defamed, there is never that intention because defamatory actions create anger and that anger distracts from the purpose of the original comments anyway!
So what is the purpose of Cranky Lizard’s comments?
Well…nothing has changed from the first day of this column; the purpose is to expose the nonsense etc., and then let you judge for yourself. There is no particular political bias in the comments, although some may think that way.
But, and it is a big but, unless Cranky Lizard is wrong, the noise and the hysteria is getting worse; Australia, my home, seems like a land possessed with mad-eyed demons. Our city streets flood with open-mouthed, screeching, distorted neck veined humans who are part of a media-driven political elite determined to change almost every community value that was of any substance. This mob are at war with the sexes, with white men, with statues of explorers, with Governments, with history, with America, in fact, they are at war with anything they don’t like, or more likely, anything they are told they don’t like !! Out in the normal world, there is a perception that our leaders don’t care about this madness infecting our lives; they too, are perceived as being part of the weirdness. Living in padded pods, adrift from the normal stress of living in Australia. They are seen to be a part of a crazy Parliamentary dance for the activists, the media and the ‘ advisers and commentators ‘.
The violins resonate shrilly; the drums pound the ancient rhythms of steps and heartbeats from Neanderthal times, the oboes oboe, the trumpets trump and the piano tinkles and rolls…and Cranky Lizard is repeating some words already spoken. The swirling becomes a vortex; smiles
Cranky Lizard Speaks Our National Values – Trashing our National Heritage – for What??
are grimly held on distorted, vacuous faces which, in some cases, cannot believe their luck. Pudgy, clumsy forms jerk and gyrate to the pounding beats, blonde locks are flung, bobbed helmets of hair spin undisturbed, silvery manes flop and trays of moving alcohol, Dom Perignon of course, are swept clean like a paddock overwhelmed with locust crawlers! It is all funded by the taxpayer, as it should be, they claim.
And it all happens in the halls of our capital cities.
Outside of the main circus tents; normal life carries on in the small country towns and the sprawling suburbs, the Jackie Howe singlets and the K-Mart trakkies watch the false nonsense and the contrived spectaculars which now comprise the ‘ News ‘, and they know, they know they are being conned!
Most of the jobs they knew and trained for are gone, replaced by wind machines and solar blobs; they live in ‘splitter’ blocks where they can hear each other shout or make love or both! They watch aggressive, fat creatures in burquas, neither male nor female. Just aggressive fat creatures, yell contempt in their Courts and they know that if they did the same, they would be punished. They do try, very hard to believe in what they believed in when they were young, boys were boys and girls were girls – all that was OK. It had order and common sense. But now they are rubbished
by the media, by marketing gurus in shopping malls and by robot phone calls which ask them what they think – as if anyone really cared? And.
They know, they know as sure as guns are iron, that we are spending more than we earn; we are allowing people to enter our country not to contribute but to take, by fraud, by religious posturing, by any means possible, money from us. Because it is our money, not the Government’s, Government’s don’t have money, they have ours!
In some communities, three out of every five people do not work; some can’t. Some won't – all take our money. And what is not taken, we give away in large lumps. We give it to reefs, to causes which work against us, those who wish to stop primary industries, those who wish to bully bakers into baking cakes they don’t want to bake, those who tell us what to eat and, what Cranky Lizard reckons is one of the tremendous global frauds, anthropogenic climate change. They used to believe, and some still cling to that belief, that the leaders they voted for will know what is happening and do something to fix it. But.
They are beginning to believe that their leaders are not listening anymore.
Anger simmers and grows, and, as sure as God made little apples this anger will be expressed at the ballot box. They
know that we are trashing our National values, they know that generations of Australian men and women sacrificed their lives so that we could live in this marvellous nation – and they know that we are not doing the right thing by those generations – we are not respecting what they left us! The central theme song of the media, Governments and the advisors and activists is “ There is no business like show business .”
In the background, Cranky Lizard can hear the music from another song, the ghostly voice of Leonard Cohen humming…” Hallelujah “ Hallelujah indeed?
Cranky Lizard accepts that it is easy to criticise, to poke sticks through pickets fences, to rubbish the efforts of people who do positive work in our communities which is why Cranky Lizard brings to these words a suggestion. If you don’t like what is happening in our communities, say so – become involved, speak out, you don’t need to join the noisy mobs. You can become interested in your society, charities, social groups, even politics, either side does not matter, there are good people on both sides of politics working for their beliefs, get involved, speak out, make your voice heard.
It is simple to convince yourself that you are not important and that no one cares what you say or think, not right, not right at all, people do care and will listen if you become involved. Cranky Lizard is suggesting that it is time for many more of us to become participants – not spectators!
Previous generations left us a marvellous, wealthy and generous nation of people with good hearts, willing to listen and provide a ‘ fair go ‘ – what is happening now is that the noisy mob are trying to take this away and replace it with nothing of value except slogans, greed and envy. Don’t let this happen. Don’t let the noise drown the conventional sense. Make sure, by your commitment, that we maintain our National values for the next generation of young Australians who need our examples of how to do this. They will not thank us tomorrow, but they probably will in a few years time.

Simone Wilson MP has defended Mark Baily
out of Labor’s signature playbook”.
Simone Wilson MP has defended Mark Baily MP, Minister for Transport and Main Roads Media Release this month regarding funding for Bribie Island Road!
“Labor has deserted the people of Pumicestone, no different to what the same Labor State Government did during their last term in office.”
Mark Bailey MP, Minister for Transport and Main Roads issued a media statement titled “Federal LNP deserts lonely island roads”. Simone Wilson MP, State Member for Pumicestone, categorically refutes the assertions made in this statement regarding Federal funding and wishes to set the record straight. Simone Wilson MP said “There is not a single truth in Mark Bailey’s media statement of 5 October concerning the Federal funding gifted to fast-track improvements on Bribie Island Road”. “The only person who has deserted Bribie Island Road is the State Transport and Main Roads Minister, Mark Bailey, himself.”
“Mark Bailey’s lies about this funding are straight out of Labor’s signature playbook and he’s always been as trustworthy as a rattle snake left in your bed”. “The $20 million of Federal funding to fast-track Bribie Island Road upgrade projects has never been contingent on the result of the Longman by-election. Claiming anything other than this is a bare-faced lie.”
“This is entirely a political stunt straight
“To deliberately lie to people in the Pumicestone Electorate is disgraceful and Mark Bailey needs to think twice before trying us on for size.”
“Mark Bailey needs to answer why, after four months, he would rather issue a media statement full of lies than do his job and get this funding on the ground in Pumicestone to make the Bribie Island Road a safe journey for all commuters.”
“This is another prime example of Labor governing by spin and blatant disregard for the truth.” Media Release from the Honourable Mark Bailey MP.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads The Honourable Mark Bailey says
Federal LNP deserts lonely island roads A Federal Government cash splash on Bribie Island roads in the lead up to the Longman by-election appears to have dried up.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said four months after dumped Prime Minister Turnbull visited the region and announced $20 million for Bribie’s roads, the Palaszczuk Government was still waiting to hear if the funding was coming. “In July this year, Mr Turnbull took a sudden interest in Bribie Island’s roads when there were votes up for grabs in Longman,” Mr Bailey said. “Those votes didn’t come for the Federal LNP and the message from Canberra seems to be if you don’t vote for us then we won’t back you. “The LNP Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson has asked what roads

we will allocate the $20 million to but perhaps she should ask her Federal LNP colleagues where the money is first.” Mr Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government was delivering on its commitment to improvements along Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.
“We have allocated over $20 million for series of major upgrades on CabooltureBribie Island Road, including a $10.4 million project focusing on the intersection with Old Toorbul Point Road,” Mr Bailey said.
“Works will also start this month to improve safety on Caboolture-Bribie Island Road between Kal Ma Kuta Drive and Bestmann Road. “The works include new street lights and a pedestrian refuge at the KalMa-Kuta Drive intersection, as well as widening the road and installing a wide centre line treatment.
“We will also create space for U-turns at the Bestmann Road (East) intersection. “This will allow motorists heading westbound from Kal Ka Muta Drive and Spinnaker Drive the opportunity to make a left turn onto Caboolture-Bribie Island Road initially, and then perform a U-turn at the signals to travel back towards Caboolture.”
Mr Bailey said he was aware the local community had also recently advocated for traffic signals at the Spinnaker Drive intersection. “Traffic signals will be installed at Spinnaker Drive as part of future developer works,” he said.
“TMR assessed new developments proposed for the Spinnaker Drive catchment and conditioned further works needed to be undertaken to improve safety at the intersection.”
Veterans and their families will receive free public transport on Remembrance Day to recognise the Centenary of Armistice next month.
up to Remembrance Day to remind people of the sacrifice our servicemen and women have made, and continue to make each day,” Ms Howard said.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said free travel would be available to eligible passengers on the 11 November each year, as it is on ANZAC Day.
“The idea for the ‘Troop Train’ came from the Redlands RSL Sub Branch to mark the Centenary of Armistice, so I congratulate them for creating such a wonderful tribute.”
“Every year, veterans and their families attending ANZAC Day events travel on public transport for free, but that policy did not cover Remembrance Day,” Mr Bailey said.

Nominations for Australia Day Awards close at the end of the month and Moreton Bay Regional Council wants residents to get their applications in for their favourite community hero. “The clock is ticking so don’t forget to get your application in for the 2019 Australia Day Awards,” Mayor Allan Sutherland said. “The Australia Day Awards honour the unsung heroes in our community by celebrating their incredible achievements and positive contribution to helping make our region an even better place to work, live and play. “We’ve seen the high calibre of nominations over the years including our golden girl and superstar Lakeisha Patterson who took out the Moreton Bay Regional Council Young Citizen of the Year back in 2017. “Then of course we saw Karen Johns take out the Citizen of the Year earlier this year. “The DARE Formal Wear store owner had a phenomenal story to tell in not only helping to fund domestic violence support services locally, but also offering formal wear items at affordable prices and helping financially disadvantaged Year 12 students with a donated dress or suit to help them attend their Senior Formal.” Mayor Sutherland said the awards recognised the efforts of ordinary individuals doing extraordinary work in the community. “If you know someone in the community that’s an inspiration to many, then we want to hear about them.” For more information and to lodge a nomination visit https://www. moretonbay.qld.gov.au/ausawards/

Talking Business Michelle Hanton
Social media for your business Social media marketing is here to stay. Yes, it can be a moving feast of pixels, insights, reach, engagement and algorithms. BUT…before you even start to think about those, there are a few basics to get a handle on. It is very important to understand that social media is not all about generating sales. The key focus is on building your audience and creating a relationship. The sales come AFTER you’ve done the groundwork. You do not need to be on all channels. Do one and do it right. You can always add others later. The key is to choose the ones that are right for your business. The one where your audience is likely to be hanging out. Social media marketing is a changing landscape, but there are five key steps you need to take to make sure you are “dressed” for business success. In the online world this means:
1) A good clear profile picture/logo If using a photo of yourself, remember it does not necessarily have to be studio shot but it does need to be clear and recognisable. This means no hiding behind sunnies or under a big hat. If you can afford a professional headshot – get one done! 2) Link your personal page to your business This is important because if you interact in a Facebook group you are interacting as yourself when you make comments. If folks are curious about you, they click your profile to learn more. Naturally, you want it to lead them to your business page. 3) Join groups where your target audience hangs out These can be really great sources of market research. Watch, listen and get a feel for what is happening. Be helpful without the expectation of gaining anything. Be interested in what others have to say – like and comment as
appropriate.
4) Be consistent
It’s a crowded marketplace so consistency is key. This means showing up regularly. Not just on your own page but visiting others too – you can use your professional identity when you visit. 5) Interact
When people visit your page, make sure you interact. If they leave a review make sure you thank them. If they’ve left a comment, at the very least like that comment. Even better take the time to respond! Facebook is the biggest platform and that’s why we always recommend it as the best place to start your social media real estate portfolio. Until next issue….

Beachmere prepared for any “disaster” Beachmere Community Disaster Management Team and local residents completed a comprehensive Psychological First Aid course provided by Moreton Bay Regional Council. Team Co-ordinator, Terry Poole, organised the training as part of ongoing readiness for disaster events. “The Beachmere team recently completed training to staff the Disaster Evacuation Centre should it ever be required and with the help of council we were offered this course as additional training,” he said.
“Beachmere has a host of talented, skilled and resilient residents who can work together to achieve results and Beachmere has a high degree of “social capital” - individuals and groups who work together to achieve success. It’s a great thing for a small community to have.” The training was conducted by Red
Cross Trainer Greg Goebel, former CEO of the Australian Red Cross for 12 years. “Greg’s real life experiences in managing recovery operations with recent Queensland cyclones, floods and bushfires made the training “much more vivid and realistic”, Terry said. In the last several months, Beachmere
“All this training will help assist our community in preparing, enacting and recovering from any emergency situation that may arise in the future,” Terry said. Local Disaster Management Group Chair Councillor Peter Flannery said council fully supported the delivery of the training to the Beachmere community. “This training highlights another example of how council is supporting residents to Get Ready for future disaster,” Cr Flannery said.
“It will better enable volunteer staff to assist the community in recovering from any disaster. This training is a supportive response to someone who may need care and helping people affected by an emergency, disaster or traumatic event.
“The coordination and delivery of this important training, with the Australian Red Cross, is a great example of how council is supporting local communities and groups to be prepared and more resilient in times of disaster.
“It involves helping people to feel safe, connected to others, calm and hopeful, access physical, emotional and social support and feel able to help themselves. This First Aid aims to reduce initial distress, meet current needs, promote flexible coping and encourage adjustment. “It will also help the Evacuation Centre staff cope with people who have been effected by trauma or loss. It’s just as important to train the helpers to cope as it is to provide a safe evacuation space.
Community Disaster Management Team has organised and attended training in First Aid, Psychological First Aid, Managing an Evacuation Centre and Queensland Disaster Management arrangements.
“By working together to Get Ready, we are helping to ensure community safety now and into the future.”

RENOVATIONS IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES
All of us ladies know how important pelvic floor exercises are, especially when you sneeze! I am extremely grateful that I always practice these and other exercises that strengthen some of the more important places in our bodies. It’s great exercising to make changes that can be easily seen, like squats for firm butt or shoulder raises for sexy shoulders in summer dresses, but all it takes is one sneeze and you suddenly realise which bits of your body you MUST exercise. Now sneezing hasn’t been happening at my place, but what has been is renovating! Yes we are in the process of updating the worn out bits in our home, so we have the wonderful men from Total Bathroom Renovations Caboolture creating an amazing new bathroom, laundry and toilet. Now these blokes have been awesome, working around our schedules and clients, honestly, if you are looking at renovating your bathroom give Jamie a call on 0488008112. So, you say, as usual she is waffling on about stuff that has nothing to do with fitness… ahhhh that’s where you’re wrong. In the past two weeks I’ve really noticed my fitness because I’m shy and we’ve had limited access to our toilet.
Yes! Like, I’m sure, a lot of you ladies, I find it difficult to use the toilet when there are a couple of blokes just on the other side of the door. Yes, even though I know they don’t care. This has meant that I can’t do my usual pit stops quite as often as normal. Due to my stupid shyness I have needed to “hang on” more than usual. Luckily because I exercise all the “important” muscles, “hanging on” hasn’t been a problem. House renovations are all the rage on TV and ours are due mostly to the fact that you can only live so long with a bright pink bath, but like everyone else we also want to live in a good looking functional home that has water running when and where it should and power when and where we need it. And while all those renovation shows point out that our biggest and most important investment is our homes, what about our bodies? Believe me, I can’t wait to see my gorgeous new, no-old-pink-bath, fabulous bathroom but I think it’s a bit more important having a body that doesn’t suffer from random drips and leaks during sneezing, coughing or laughing! I’m sure it’s exciting for renovators
Senior Gentle Band Strength Exercises Before You Start Find Your Favourite Music!
Bands are a great way to add resistance to your exercise program. They can be purchased cheaply from Kmart Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop! Don't try these exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Please start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.
Let’s get started!
The exercises below are the same as the gentle band exercise we do in our Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one arm at a time – think about your body, does one arm have better movement than the other? Is one elbow more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Band exercises can be a fun activity but will only show benefits if they are done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your strength. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let's start.
Band Chest Press
Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Bring band UNDER your armpits – hold on to both ends of the band Push band out hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pushes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Band Seated Row
Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Place band UNDER BOTH feet – hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band backwards and try and squeeze your shoulder blades together hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Band Bicep Curl
Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Place band UNDER BOTH feet – hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band backwards and try and squeeze your shoulder blades together hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest
Band Chest Pull
Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Hold on to the band with both hands at a point where you have a little slack in the band Pull the band out as far as you can while holding it steady at chest height. Hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” If you find it too difficult release some of the band to make it easier. Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

to no longer have ceilings that sag but a non saggy butt is higher on my list. The old concrete double tubs from laundries are like the double chins I had before I started exercising, a bit worse for wear and rather unsightly. Our old tubs are now a garden ornament, luckily I lost my double chins about 10 years ago because they were big enough to use as plant pots! New power points will give us power when and where we need it, just like my body has far more power now that I am fitter and healthier than I was 10 years ago. I no longer need to inhale food for energy throughout the day. What can also be surprising for renovators is all the stuff that can go on behind walls in an older house. Worn out wiring and pipes a bit cracked can bring expensive surprises for some people once they start to pay attention to area that have been “let go” for a couple of decades. Unfortunately this happens to bodies too, without regular check-ups you might not discover leaks, blocked drains or other weird stuff until the issue is beyond repair. A lot of home owners do have a regular schedule of stuff to do around the place and your body should be treated the same. If you keep up regular maintenance and support for your body, the chances are there will be less hidden nasties lurking when you ignore problems or patch them with food!

home, changing your fitness and health is not something that happens overnight, it can take weeks, months, even years and while the changes are happening it can be uncomfortable, disruptive and sometimes challenging. Yep, you could even say it similar to trying to shave your legs at 5am in a portable shower, inside a carport, in the dark, or using a camping toilet in the garage at 3am. Your health and fitness results won’t be instant, but just like house renovations when you see the results it will be worth every uncomfortable minute, and while the home reno gurus may like to tell you that your home is your biggest investment, I believe that our bodies are far more important cause it is the only place you live in. Now we definitely nominate Jamie, Ben, the two Andys and the rest of the Total Bathroom crew as the bathroom renovating gurus, but if you need help renewing your strength, health and fitness then we know all the tricks of the trade, and will show you how to bring your body into the 21st century with style.

Becoming Dementia Friendly on Bribie Island
A group of community minded people has formed to make Bribie Island and surrounds a Dementia Friendly Community. We came together through our understanding that dementia doesn’t care who you are, it can affect anyone and it has touched all our lives.
General community understanding of dementia is poor but its incidence is on the increase. People with dementia and their loved ones can and do, feel misunderstood, marginalized and isolated. This can mean that people with dementia and their families find it very difficult to live in their own homes or continue to be active participants in the community. As Service Manager of Bribie Respite & Support Services I meet people every day who are struggling with memory loss. I see how family relationships become more stressful when one partner has dementia - or another form of health decline - and how those with declining health can feel a burden to their family. The partner with fewer health issues often also goes into decline through stress and attempting to cope without support.
At Bribie Respite & Support Services we research the activities we run to stretch people with physical or memory decline. They are designed to be challenging but at a level that allows

people to participate and feel satisfied with their efforts. The combination of challenge and fun is a boost for morale.
One of our missions is to educate the Bribie Island community about the importance of social and cognitive activity in ageing so that everyone is able to live independently for longer and get more out of life. The Dementia Friendly Community group is reaching out to local social groups and businesses who could assist us in our endeavor to make Bribie Island and Surrounds a comfortable, welcoming environment for those people diagnosed with dementia and their families. Our group aims to assist the local social community group members and business owners and their staff to: 1. Learn about dementia
2. Become confidant when spending time with someone with dementia 3. To feel comfortable talking about dementia 4.
Be able and equipped to support people with dementia that they come in contact with through social groups or business dealings.
5. Be identified as a group or business who is dementia friendly
If you would like to find out more about the Dementia Friendly Community Group or be part of our mission or if you have questions about dementia or about caring for a relative with dementia please contact us on 07 3408 2112. By Joanne Allison-Schouw

Collagen - our most abundant protein and its functions
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies. It is the structural protein found in the connective tissue of all animals. It is part of our hair, skin, nails, bone, joints, cartilage, internal organs, blood vessels, teeth and even our eyes. It acts like a glue, and gives our skin elasticity and suppleness. 70% of our skin is collagen and 70% of our cartilage is collagen. The sad thing for us about collagen is that it starts to deplete in our bodies by

A great way to source type 2 collagen which is great for joint mobility and gut health is by making good old fashioned bone broth. Many collagen supplements are actually only collagen forming in that they provide the nutrients our body uses to build collagen, however you might like to look out for products also containing real

1.5% every year from the age of 25, so by the time you’re 40 you have lost 25% of your collagen and by the time you’re 60 you have lost 50% of your bodies collagen. This is where we see the visible signs of ageing when wrinkles appear, skin loses its suppleness, and joints lose their mobility. There are different types of collagen, which are more specific to different parts or functions of the body. This is why you might hear of some products on the market being referred to as ‘beauty Collagen’. This just means the collagen used in those products is Type 1 and 3 collagen which is more specific to hair, skin and nails, hence
collagen, as this will be replacing the lost collagen with actual collagen. Also look out for hydrolised collagen which has gone through a process where the protein molecules are broken down into smaller peptides which makes it easy for the body to absorb.

Local Businesses deserve your Support. Why? By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings. November 2018.
Each morning, just before the Sun climbs out of the Pacific Ocean and begins sailing across the skies, there are local people on Bribie Island up and about, making things, with their hands, for other people on Bribie Island. There are bakers making bread, croissants, cakes and other delicious treats that only bakers can make; there are mechanics and their apprentices, already up and about getting ready to complete repairing your wheels or fix the broken ones you brought in yesterday. There are fruit people getting their fresh fruit available for you to purchase in their new fruit markets; there are truckies getting prepared to carry food, products, fuel, water, and rubbish around and away from Bribie Island, every day. There are people who catch fish, people who work in pharmacies and doctor’s surgeries, people who make supermarkets work, people who look after your hair, people who work in hospitality such as hotels, clubs, and restaurants. Some people work in servos, making sure you have to fuel for your vehicle. There are people who sell you things; builders and tradies are getting ready to assemble, fix and build houses, sheds, and apartments. They are all on Bribie Island; they live there, it is their life, and like you, it is their home. These are small local businesses – they exist because their owners have assessed that there is a need for these
businesses to service or satisfy the demand for their products or services on Bribie Island. Without them and the services and products, they supply and provide, Bribie Island would not be an enjoyable place to live – it would be a rather barren place to live. It is effortless to decide to drive 25 km or so to larger retail outlets – seeking lower retail unit prices but the economic factors of time, fuel, risk and wear and tear on vehicles and passengers are significant in these decisions. More often than not, the product or the service you seek at a larger outlet will be more expensive than the same product or service available on Bribie Island.
Why?
Because of the factors mentioned above have already been calculated into the price structure on Bribie Island plus the businesses on Bribie Island can purchase products at a better rate than you can – any time! But this issue is much, much more than that. This about where you live and what makes it pleasant for you to live there. As in any country/rural town, there is always the conflict amongst the locals that the regional centres are cheaper than the local shops. I spend much of my time in Western Queensland and I see and regularly hear examples of locals driving to Toowoomba to buy meat, fruit, even furniture rather
than spend their money with the local retailers. They do not allow for the fuel for the 300 km round trip, the wear and tear on their vehicle and their time, and, in one case, the freight bill for the furniture made the landed cost many, many dollars more than they would have paid had they purchased from the local store. Now – I know that going to Morayfield or Caboolture is not a round trip of 300 km from Bribie, I suggest, however, that the principle stands. The local businesses on Bribie Island, exist for you, no one else. Residents of Caboolture and Morayfield do not drive to Bribie to do their shopping on a daily basis – they may drive there to get fish and chips – who would n’t? Bribie’s fish and chips are some of the best in the world – big call, you say – pfft – do it all the time; make big calls that is! If you live on Bribie Island, you are fortunate to live in a beautiful community with impressive facilities. University of the Third Age is one of the best on Australia’s East Coast, and many locals use it, plus I know of ‘ mainlanders ‘ who also drive there weekly. By spending your money on and in local businesses on Bribie Island, you strengthen the local economy; you give confidence to local companies to expand, and this completes an iron law of economics, which is, strong local economies breed confidence and expansion. You are contributing to your well being.
Having grown up in local rural and isolated communities, I follow the rules established by my Grand Parents and still apply today:• Buy from a Local. • Buy Hand Made. • Buy from People you Know. • Buy from Self Employed. I am reasonably well travelled and have yet to find fish and chips better than those available on Bribie Island – although I would be prepared to go on a sponsored global journey to sample other’s efforts and report back !
The ISLAND and Surrounds is a local business employing local people and we appreciate your local support!

MAKING HISTORY
Gary Parsons was the master of ceromonies. Despite the rain, ticket holders queued out the door of Serenity at the Waterways Restaurant entrance on Saturday 13th October for the Official Launch of Hairdressers with Hearts (HwH). Glasses filled with sparkling bubbles and non-alcoholic punch, a delicious range of finger- food including heart topped cupcakes and biscuits decorated with the words “Thank You” all added to the festivities. Gary Parsons did a sterling job as Master of Ceremonies, whilst local photographer Ron Le Huray captured the magic moments as Edward A Bear provided music to relax by. Sonia Colvin, Founder, shared the story of how it all began… “It started with a conversation between
a hairdresser and a DV worker under the window in the safe room at Caboolture courthouse 7 years ago.” That conversation was between Sonia and Fiona Worrall, now a member of the HwH Board. “It was a dream. A dream of being able to DO SOMETHING. To harness the power of hairdressing salons.” In 2015 Sonia started Hairdressers with Hearts to help clients with a need. She quickly realised that clients needed access to the right resources at the right time. And that she needed training to be able to say the right things to help her clients when it came to being faced with situations of elder abuse and domestic violence. Fast forward 3 years and HwH is officially launched as a not for profit company in the knowledge that from small things big things grow. “By having these resources I have personally helped 86 of my clients get the right help,” said Sonia proudly. “Multiple that by Australia’s 55,000+ hairdressers and you have 4,730,000 Australians receiving the right help and the right advice at the right time. Hairdressers with Hearts aims to harness the intimate and trusted relationship between Australia’s 55,000+ hairdressers and their much loved clients. We believe that by EMPOWERING hairdressers with the correct resources and appropriate training, we will be doing our part to make a difference to the lives of many Australians. We may even SAVE a few lives. “Hairdressers are an untapped

resource in our nations fight against domestic violence and elder abuse. The vision for HWH is simple. To provide every Australian hairdresser and barber with the HwH/No more silence training so they are empowered to help clients, and to provide appropriate resources in small inexpensive plastic stands in every salon and barber shop in Australia. By doing this we will reach the most vulnerable in the community who have no idea of where to turn. HwH has the ability to cross-cultural and socio-economic barriers because hairdressers are a part of ALL communities. Together we can make a difference!” Smartphone cameras flashed, and congratulations flowed as Sonia finished her speech to thunderous applause. This was a moment of history being made. If you missed it check out the Hairdressers with Hearts page for the video of Sonia’s speech. Hairdressers with Hearts will, without a doubt, continue to grow from strength to strength and it all started right here on Bribie Island. HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP 1) Ask your Hairdresser to sign up to Hairdressers with Hearts 2) Join HwH as an individual member 3) If you have good connections that would be willing to support us financially – let us know. THE WONDERS OF NEPAL While the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu may not be everyone’s cup of tea, Nepal is so much more. I tend to feel that some believe if you are not a trekker then Nepal doesn’t offer much else and this could not be farther from
Bhaktapur Kathmandu the truth. Yes it is the gateway to Mt Everest trekking but it is also a stunning destination for wildlife in the Chitwan National Park. Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and as such is where the hive of activity is centred. The local roads are to say the least a nightmare under a constant state of repair. Over time more and more have been able to afford cars and motor bikes with road upgrades not having kept up with the growth. Interestingly drivers seem to take it in their stride with an usual acceptance and management of negotiating their way through. Road rules are a little bit hazy in implementation. It all adds to the intrigue and experience of course. I have always associated Nepal with monkeys and a visit to Swayambhu Temple is both funny and dangerousespecially during birthing season from

Travel June to July. While the mothers sit calmly with babies swinging off their tales, it is the males that show the aggression. I will leave it at that! It certainly is a great time to visit with the babes entertaining the visitors. Bhaktapur is the oldest temple region and one of the most fascinating. All but destroyed in the last earthquake in April 2015, the main monuments are the Nyatapola Temple, the statue of King Bhupatindra Malla and the 55 windowed Palace of Durbar Square. Once free to enter it is now US $15. The re-build is nearing completion as I write. Driving out of Kathmandu we head to the beautiful Lake Phewa in the city of Pokhara. Many resorts and activities are available here and the prices are remarkably cheap. Considering the array of restaurants all providing sumptuous food, I find that it is only the souvenirs that are inflated in comparison to Kathmandu. Don’t be surprised if you find a cow or two assisting you with street side shopping, they love to browse at the merchandise on the footpaths. If one needs a rest it makes great sense to plop down outside on the footpath. Only in Nepal. In the mountains overlooking the lake is the Peace Pagoda, a fitting place for a special monument. Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave is worth exploring- said to be the longest cave in Nepal. Nearby are the Davis Falls named after a British woman who fell to her death there. Hinduism is strong throughout Nepal and there are any temples displaying edifices of Shiva Vishnu and Brahma. Many continue the journey to find the birth place of Buddha in Lumbini. The Melbourne Cup
Amelia Strazdins
Every year in November, the race that stops the nation is held. All of Australia almost pauses, eager to see the outcome of the famous horse race. Held by the Victoria Racing Club, the Melbourne Cup is one of the richest races in the world. In 2017, around 657 million dollars was wagered by Australians throughout the course of the four-day carnival. On the first Tuesday of the month over 100,000 people flock, in their best dresses and brightly coloured suits. This iconic race is recognised across the globe and is televised to over 650 million people worldwide. The first race was held in 1861, popularity continued to grow and in 1877 the day was announced as a public holiday for those living in Victoria. The regulations for the race outline that the horse participating in the race must be three years or older and are required to run a distance of 3,200 metres. It costs 600 dollars to enter a horse and the winning prize is 3.6 million dollars for first place. All the prizes together reach a total of 6,200,000 Australian dollars. Fashion is also a main aspect of the race and one of the most popular things that occurs within the event are the fashion shows. Many women dress up on the day in hopes of possibly winning the title of best dressed. Titles also include best fascinator. Previously
years ago, women at the race would wear fascinators to show their wealth and social status. Even though today, in modern society, they do not reflect the same meaning they used to- they are still a popular tradition that many women enjoy participating in. The uncommon accessories are part of the history of the race and are just another interesting element of the race that stops the nation. Businesses also use this race as an opportunity to gain profit, with many restaurants and bars throwing themed lunches and providing a comfortable place to watch the race. Many work places also have their own competitions in relation to best dressed and use it as fun interaction between work colleagues. Many people love to dress up for the occasion and parties are held across Australia. Race tracks around the country are filled with people and overall Aussies use the Cup as a day to get out and celebrate. This year will be no exception, with the Melbourne Cup expected to bring with it the usual excitement and masses of crowds. There is no doubt that Australia, and the rest of the world, will be watching. Their interest not only focused on the winner of the elusive Cup- but also on the high-end fashion, celebrations, food and good times with friends. Watched by millions we sit by and wait for yet another successful year of racing.

Next Month Melanie and the girls from Café Bella are celebrating an important milestone, their first year in business! Melanie re opened Café Bella on the 20th November last year and has never looked back.
Melanie said, “it’s been a hectic 12 months rebuilding the business. Getting the customers back in with good oldfashioned customer service, good food and affordable prices is my priority. So many people really missed having Café Bella to catch up with family or friends and loved ones. Its really nice to see all the familiar and lots of new faces, have a chat and really get to know our customers and what they like.” “I have a great team of girls and we all work really hard together. I couldn’t have done it without these girls. They are the best and I really mean that. We are great friends and that shows in the friendly, happy atmosphere here at Café Bella. We like to greet our customers on arrival and say “see you again” and “thankyou” when they leave. It’s not rocket science. It’s called Customer Service”.
Proposed beachmere heritage and health walk Story by MJ Donovan
“It was a challenge to reopen the café and earn back the customers support. We have done a lot of hard work and we are getting there but the challenge continues. We will continue to improve and grow and we look forward to the challenge”.
Melanie has been on the island since 2000 and is a true local. She has previously worked in hospitality and managed hotels and clubs for many years before a career change to banking where she worked at the Commonwealth Bank here on Bribie for the last 8 years. “My hospitality background and more recently banking has been a great help in making my dream come true. I have always wanted to have my own business but it was never the right time until now. All of the girls at Café Bella want to thank all the customers old and new for their fabulous support and feedback and we look forward to seeing you for a cuppa and chat very soon.
Local Beachmere residens, Karen and Eric Wallwork, have been busy working on the logistics of a project to get people out walking in Beachmere, while making it interesting by adding an element of history. It is envisioned that as residents and visitors use the walk, it will lead to improvements of existing infrastructure and identify future requirements.

The proposed walk is being loosely modelled on the Bribie Passage ‘Seaside Stroll’ and the ‘Swap It Don’t Stop It’ campaign. It is hoped, in time, that the proposed Beachmere Health & Heritage Walk will be added to the Moreton Bay Signature Walks listing on the Moreton Bay Regional Council website. The walk would start at Bishop Road, near the Beachmere Conservation Park and finish at the South Reserve (off-leash dog park). It takes approximately 49 minutes one way and if you return this should give you 10,000 steps (depending on gait and speed). At low tide you could complete the walk entirely along the beach.

The Palaszczuk Government Opening the Doors to Renting Reform The Queensland Government is undertaking a state-wide consultation in readiness for important reforms to residential tenancy laws for renters and property owners to ensure Queenslanders needs will be met now and into the future.
To start the process this week, renters, landlords and real estate agents will be contacted and asked for their views, how the market is changing and how well the system is working. This is a key part of the Palaszczuk Governments ‘Open Doors to Renting Reform’ consultation process announced today.
Feedback will also be sought from landlords and the rental property industry in a bid to protect all involved and to improve housing stability for people living in the private market.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said all Queenslanders deserve a safe, secure and sustainable home, and we know that many Queenslanders see investing in rental properties as a way of securing their financial future.
“My Government wants Queensland to have contemporary residential tenancy laws that protect tenants and property owners alike and improve stability in the rental market,” the Premier said. “The last full-scale review and changes to the tenancy regulations dates back to 1970’s. It’s well and truly time for another now.

The Open Doors to Renting Reform consultation program is being conducted by the Department of Housing and Public Works in conjunction with the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA), and aims to ensure the Residential Tenancies and Rooming Accommodation Act 2008 provides better protections for tenants and property owners and increases stability in the rental market. The consultation runs from 30 September until 30 November 2018, featuring a range of consultation activities including pop-up kiosks at markets and shopping centres where people can share their views and experience of renting in Queensland. Sandstone Point Community Carols
Christmas celebrations are fast approaching and we invite you and your family to join us for the Sandstone Point Community Carols on Saturday December 8. Bring along not only the kids, but also grandma and grandpa, your neighbours and even friends to enjoy this free, fun and safe family Christmas event. The Carols are held at the Sandstone Point Sports Oval just off Bestmann Road East, adjacent to the village shopping centre. Enjoy live entertainment from local dance groups and kindies from 4.30pm, with the Carols concert with our community choir from 6.30pm. This year’s committee is particularly excited about the inaugural ‘GEMLIFE BRIBIE ISLAND FIREWORKS’, which will light up the sky at the end of the carols concert around 8pm. Gemlife Bribie Island have been generous in their support of this community event over the past 2 years and we look forward to
many people, not only from Sandstone Point, but also from Bribie Island, Ningi and Beachmere, coming along to enjoy all the free rides and live entertainment. As the Sandstone Point Carols draw closer, the Committee would like to acknowledge and thank not only our platinum sponsor, Gemlife Bribie Island, but also all the other sponsors who continue to support this community event. Our Major sponsors for 2018 are again Bribie Cinemas, Island and Surround newspaper and Moreton Bay Regional Council and, in particular Councillor Brooke Savige. A number of Gold Sponsors, most of whom have supported this event for a number of years are on board again. One of which is Wallum Action Group, who each year assist with the cost of a particular ride for the children. Other Gold sponsors are Bribie RSL, Bribie Chamber of Commerce, Brendan Coulston from Richardson and
Wrench and Hans Electrical of Sandstone Point. Our community sponsors to date in 2018 are Austelect, a local election company, Bribie Island Bowls Club, Bribie Upholstery, Bongaree Bowls Club, Dossel’s Engineering, Eyecare Plus, Simone Wilson MP, Traditional Funerals and Susan Lamb MP. As this is an event run by the community for the community, we could not continue without the support of companies and organizations such as those listed and we are sincerely grateful. Finally, it would not be Christmas without the man that the children love most. Santa will arrive at 5pm and will make his way to his sleigh at his photo booth where mum and dad can take photos of their children with Santa. Remember, its ‘free’, its ‘fun’ and it’s on Saturday December 8 from 4:30pm.

The full circle of the real estate market
Just like employment figures, petrol prices and home loan rates, the real estate market is not static. Nor is the market singular. Rather, the real estate scene is made up of many markets each moving through its own cycle. When it comes to future-proofing your investment there’s no foolproof method. However, there are some key indicators for good investment which can be directly linked to the strengths and growth of other industries, such as employment. New figures have recently emerged suggesting that today’s 18-year-old will have over 15 different jobs in their lifetime, across five different career paths. How does this affect the property market? Changes in employment often necessitate changes in location. People relocating for work or in need of temporary accommodation for periods of tenure may require a more flexible arrangement for living circumstances than property ownership. It could be possible that more frequent changes in employment will make home ownership less appealing, putting a greater demand on rentals.
From a landlord’s perspective, it is certainly worth giving consideration to such a scenario – and accommodate the changing environment of the rental market. With people’s working lives now taking shape in a variety of formats and arrangements, consideration to different leasing options may be a benefit to both landlords and tenants, who will benefit from flexibility in their living circumstances. Areas of high employment will generate a high demand for property and will be a key consideration for savvy property investors. Another consideration for landlords is in relation to both location and type of property. That is, how well will the property accommodate the changing life circumstances of a tenant? Is the property better suited to young, single professionals? Could it easily be changed to accommodate a growing family? And if it is clearly one or the other – singe professionals or familyorientated - is it in the right location to appeal to that particular demographic? The demand for rental property appears set to remain strong overall. Whether you are expanding your property portfolio, or are eager to enter into the market, understanding where to buy and what to buy is the first step. Your go-to people at this point are the property experts – the property managers and sales agents who live and breathe property markets and their cycles.

Geeks & Gadgets Music to Our Ears Written by Jazmine Barrett and Brooklyn Self
It’s the latest clash of the music streaming world: is Spotify or Apple Music the superior service? But before we delve into which is the best provider, let us explain exactly what a streaming service is. A music streaming service is a technological resource that allows a person to listen to a wide range of music offline at any time. There are a number of different platforms that allow a person to utilise this service, but the two frontrunners are Spotify and Apple Music. The question that constantly arises is, which of the two is best? An array of different factors involved in these streaming apps can be examined in order to decide. A key variation of the two is the fact that Spotify comes with a free version, where the user does not have to pay a cent to stream. However, this does come with a catch – you cannot download music to play while disconnected from the Internet, you cannot select the specific song you would like to play (and instead, can only shuffle songs and playlists), and you have a limited number of times you can skip songs. Further, there are advertisements fairly frequently to ensure that the service remains free. Apple Music, on the other hand, does not come with a free version.

Youth Interest
readily available for you to stream to your heart’s content, while Apple Music has TV and Movie functions. Don’t get too excited – you aren’t able to view the eight Harry Potter instalments – but there are plenty of musical documentaries which may tickle your fancy! Or a second example: Spotify has a “Behind the Lyrics” feature where, throughout the duration of a song, you can view the full lyrics accompanied by a lyric analysis. Conversely, Apple Music has Beats 1 radio – a 24/7 radio station where presenters interview countless artists and play the newest music, free of advertising. With these considerations in mind, Spotify and Apple Music are pretty much on equal footing. But it is the next feature that potentially places Spotify on a pedestal – its curated playlists. Spotify has a variety of playlists that cater specifically to you. The app creates six playlists entitled ‘Daily Mixes’ which are crafted from both songs you have previously listened to, and song recommendations that are similar to your taste in music. In addition, Spotify has a ‘Discover’ page, in which you can find new songs by artists that suit your musical ear.
Spotify is the costlier service at $11.99 a month while Apple Music is at $9.99. In sum, Apple music is best for a person on a budget. And on the other hand, Spotify is ultimately the higher quality deal with better choice of playlists and podcasts for your enjoyment. So, the only question left From this point forth, the information presented will concern the paid versions is which artist will star in the soundtrack to your life? Eminem, Lady Gaga, Bob of each service. There are numerous Dylan or millions more? The choice is excellent features which belong only yours. to one service and not the other. For example, Spotify has many podcasts

Saving Bribie’s History
Written by Jacob Thornton, year 7.
In the last 15 years, many memorials have been constructed to commemorate Bribie’s short, yet very interesting history. Our rich and diverse history contributes to our culture, but do we celebrate the past enough in our community? There are some plaques that recognise our history at Brennan Park, First Avenue and even at Oxley Park but a mere mention on a plaque is not enough. How can we better educate the community and acknowledge this history as we move forward? We only need to look towards the Matthew Flinders ‘talking’ monument and we can see that it has been neglected; it currently is a statue with a button that does nothing. Our history needs to be more than plaques and statues; we need to do something about it. A perfect opportunity to recognise our history would be the tale of the Avon, a shipwreck in the middle of the passage, just off the shore of Banksia Beach. The Avon was a coal carrier, turned into a transporter for the South Sea Islanders from their native homelands to the cane fields of northern Queensland. In 1915, James Clark (a local oyster farmer), had it scuttled in its present-day location, to protect an alluvial oyster bank on the leeward side of the vessel. Despite its remarkable history, no memorial is present, no mention of its story anywhere. Another important part of Bribie Island’s history is Bribie’s Second World War fortifications. On Bribie
there are multiple types of fortificationsfrom air raid shelters to gun emplacements, RAAF Radar Stations to repeater stations; Bribie has it all. This includes a little known, yet very important structure located in Rotary Park. These mementos that were once lookout posts, were removed from their original locations and placed at Rotary Park. To understand their importance, you must first understand Bribie’s Second World War history. Bribie formed what was part of the ‘Brisbane Line’- a line of defences designed to defend Brisbane. Although the invasion never came, it was dangerously close to happening. On the 14th of May 1943, the hospital ship Centaur was torpedoed off the coast of North Stradbroke Island. The observatory post was taken down after the war, and its foundations were moved to Rotary Park. However, the only reminder is a sign, placed in order to mark the significance of this location in Bribie’s history. I propose that we improve this and invite the students attending the schools in the Bribie area to help. If we can inspire young children to learn about the past, we are readying ourselves for unity in the future. Much of Bribie’s history needs to be visually accessible and celebrated, recognised at community events and taught at schools. An urgent solution is needed to save some hugely important areas in our island’s history and for this reason local and state governments should collaborate to fund the development of Bribie’s huge, and little known history. Recognise our history: build our community

A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN After spending a few weeks in Parliament, it’s been great to get back to doing the important work in our community. As you may know, I have a very ‘hands-on approach’ in carrying-out my role as the Member for Longman. It’s my job to make sure you’ve had your say on the important issues, and that your voice makes it to where policy decisions are made in Canberra. I’ve met with community groups like the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Agency and the Bribie Nashos, called and visited households in Ningi and held mobile offices in Beachmere and across the Electorate. If we’re to craft progressive policy in this country, it’s the people, groups and organisations in our community that need to be the drivers. If you see or hear from me out in the community, make sure you stop to let me know what’s going on in your area. Susan Lamb MP Federal Member for Longman
Hitting the phones and streets for better mobile coverage Over the past few weeks, I’ve been calling and door-knocking my way around parts of Ningi and Bellmere seeking feedback about mobile coverage. People have reported to my office that pockets of these areas experience poor or no mobile coverage. Bad mobile reception becomes a safety issue in situations where you can’t even dial-out in an emergency. Recently, the Government announced funding for Round 4 of its Mobile Black Spot Program. Although I have to say, it’s unfortunately just recycled money which wasn’t spent in the previous round. Nevertheless, it’s an opportunity to lobby the Liberal Government to fix the massive distortion in the allocation of grants in rounds 1-3. One of the other issues with Round 4 is that it has only been established for ‘non-major urban’ areas of our electorate. This means that areas excluded in this round, such as pockets in Bellmere, could potentially miss out. Despite this, I have been consulting with people in our community, asking them to pass on their feedback so that we can place pressure on the Government to consider all sections of our community. Although the deadline for feedback has passed, I would still encourage you to contact my office and pass on the details of any mobile black spot areas. I won’t stop advocating on important issues like this, where our community’s safety and security is impacted.
Availability of aged care packages – getting to the bottom of the issues It’s been a problem in our community for quite some time now, although it seems to be getting worse – the availability of suitable home care packages. It worries me when families have been approved for packages, but have been waiting to transition to their new package for months, sometimes even years! Over the next few weeks, you might receive a call from me or my team asking if you or your family have had any issues with the process of claiming a package. If you have any questions in the meantime, feel free to contact your Electorate Office.

MICK’S PATCH

Landscape Plant Rain arrived of the Month at last - or was it first?
Singing to your plants
Well its an old adage expression, but is their any proof to this theory that singing, or playing music can alter the growth of plants? It’s a very interesting subject for me, as I have come full circle in my thinking and have become more aware that plant health and human health are directly influenced by our natural chemistry. For example, pH levels in the body have a direct correlation to nutrient absorption and digestion in our bodies, but in regard to soil- media for plants, some nutrients can be locked chemically and become unavailable to plants if the soil is too acidic or overly alkaline. Also, if the natural good bacteria in our gut has been compromised due to strong antibiotics, then the process of nutrient absorption is also compromised, and nutrient deficiencies can occur resulting in the need for vitamin supplementation. Also, with soils, the delicate microorganisms designed to break down organic matter and release nutrients can also be wiped out with excessive chemical usage. Then repopulating the soil with healthy bacteria and fungi, becomes our focus if we want strong plants that are resilient to fluctuations in environmental conditions. But how does music or singing to your plants compare here? And how do plants actually respond? Well over the centuries it is been well documented and accepted that high pitch vibrations can stimulate plant growth and some frequencies can be music to our ears also, and some can even break wine glasses accordingly at higher frequencies, but a few years ago, scientists at the University of California, San Diego in the United States discovered a signal- mechanism that controls a plants stomata (the miniscule little breathing holes situated underneath the leaves of plants that regulate gas exchange and transpiration). The two cells that form the stoma consist of specialised guard cells that are attuned to the resonant frequency of calcium. When exposed to this frequency the stomata would close. Also, when plants were exposed to various music, bird song and high frequency tones, the plants vibrate and stimulated the stomata to remain open, even though the exact frequencies did not match the calcium one, the tones had a direct effect on the plant’s gas exchange and transpiration. So, all those Bach flower remedies with their purported vibrational energies derived from flowers into essences, were on the right path after all. I would hate to think that playing music to the plant would stimulate the stomata to open at the detriment of the plants health, resulting in the plants to overly transpire and subsequently wilt as we have altered its natural transpiration system- on a hot day, but perhaps everything in moderation I guess; just one song in the morning will suffice. I will have to control myself indeed! Interestingly, the various proteins of plants which consist of amino acids are thought to have their own frequencies too, and there is research being conducted on the effects of resonance to the human body-called, Transcutaneous Electroneural Stimulation or (TENS), which studies specific frequencies that stimulate the generation of specific substances in the body. Apparently, a frequency of 10 HZ, is thought to stimulate the creation of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter and also (an amino acid). And it looks like it really does come down to the good vibes after all. That explains why the ‘Bee Gees’- had us all in the palm of their hand I guess, with that famous tune- “I am picking up good vibrations- oom bob bob”. Well on that note, stay ‘tuned’- to next issue Until then- May your plants sing back!
Wow, the recent rainfall was a real benefit to our lawns and gardens here on Bribie Island and surrounding districts but thank goodness we missed out on the large hail storm that plummeted the darling downs which finished off their strawberries, stone fruit and custard apples that were almost ready for harvest this month. It was devastating to all affected.
Clivia miniata or Bush Lilly - Kaffir Lilly
Every spring I still get blown away with the colour and vibrancy of these pale orange blooms. Clivia miniata has its origins tracing back to South Africa. They are a fairly tough plant- with long strappy evergreen leaves which fan out from an almost leek- like base. In late winter thick flower stalks will push up from between the leaves and blossom with up to 20 trumpet shape flowers in early spring. Each plant sends up one flower stalk- but as the plant eventually clumps and multiplies, then many flower stalks are produced providing a truly magnificent display. In their native Africa, they grow in rich, organic soil and they naturally prefer part- shady conditions. The trick is to cut the thick developing seed embryos off before they mature as the energy will exhaust the plant and as a result next year’s flowering may be compromised. I tend to repot them every 3 to 4 years as they seem to flower best when pot bound. There are many cultivars available now with colours abound, including pale yellow and a new vivid green coloured blossom, there is also a variegated leaf variant with fine lines like a barcode, definitely one for the collection indeed! Old faithful, in flower now and always brightens up that dark corner in the garden.
Clivia miniata ‘Hirao’
This new green flowered cultivar above is called Clivia miniata ‘Hirao’ its magnificent to behold and highly sort after by collectors.
This variegated Cliviahas very attractive leaves with longitudinal variegation. Sometimes referred to as pinstripe Clivia.

As you drive up our local streets, most lawns are green with envy- once again and it seems our spring season has been delayed in comparison to this time last year. The first week in September in 2017 reached 28 degrees back then but now in mid-October, we are only hovering around a cool 24 degrees, with wind and rain about also. I guess the humidity is going to be a cracker this year towards Christmas and all the outdoor workers will have their shirts hanging near their ankles- wringing wet from excessive sweat. But now it’s time to get stuck in the garden and try and control those pesky weeds that have literally flourished everywhere. They seem to grow ten times as fast as the lawns do, and it only takes about a week of damp weather and the seeds will have germinated once again. There is still a lot of winter grass growing strongly in lawns around the place and these can be a pain to control as they set seed and re-emerge next winter seemingly out of nowhere if not attended too.
Great time to get out and fertilise your lawn and plants if you have not already done so? Sometimes the wet weather can cause some leaching of valuable soluble nutrients especially in sandy soils. The best thing to do is apply some organic slow release fertiliser which not only fertilises your lawns and plants but helps build up your organic levels once again. I am asked a lot about different fertilisers on my consultations and I thought I would elaborate a little more today. I have created my own blend of fertiliser which has a high carbon content, called: FERTIL8-Gold. ® This fusion blended fertiliser is combined with some very special ingredients that benefit our sandy soils here on the coast, especially when combined with my concentrated seaweed blend: KELP 8- Blue® which is part of my soil rebuilding range of products becoming available later on this month. If you want to know more, please see my contact details below. When it comes to fertilising, it quickly becomes apparent the different individual needs for certain food crops and as a result some special prescription blends of fertiliser will become necessary. For example, if you were to use mainly manures, as fertiliser for lawns or food crops in general, it would also depend on whether any of these manures will have been composted and assimilated into the soil profile to produce plant available nutrients during the growth phase to be of any benefit, before harvest. This is why its best to plan your food gardens well in advance and have your soil enriched and enlivened with composted manures, blood and bone and worm castings. Once this has been achieved, regular applications of organic fertilisers dusted around the root zone several times a year and fertilised with fish, seaweed or molasses, will ensure the plants vitality and soil fertility needs are met. The beneficial bacterial and fungal strains respond well to the gibberellins and amino acids contained in the seaweed, which also benefits the plants root system creating healthy plants naturally. When Nine Becomes Eleven !
By Anne Matthews Public Relations Director Bribie Rotary
November was the ninth month in the Roman calendar and actually means nine. With the addition of January and February into our calendar, it became the “eleventh” month of the year. November is the third month of Spring, and the harbinger of Summer. It is therefore a “growing” month with expectations for the future – be it Christmas or the approaching New Year! It is also Rotary Foundation Month. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) is Rotary's own charitable arm and its function is to give assistance to those in need. The Foundation utilises the global network of Rotarians who invest their time, money,

and expertise into priorities such as eradicating Polio and promoting peace.
Our Bisley Farm project, which assists indigenous children from the Cherbourg community, received a $55,000 grant from the Foundation. A recent joint application with neighbouring Rotary clubs to alleviate malnutrition in the western province of PNG is to receive funding from the Foundation. Those readers who attended our 2017 High Tea will recall that the proceeds from that day went towards scoping this project and it is exciting to see that that the Foundation has approved funding for this initiative. This global grant, “adopt a village project”, will provide nutritional information on local foods at village workshops and encourage the people in the Mougulu region of PNG to use this knowledge to improve their diet.
The purpose of The Rotary Foundation can be found in it's motto: "Doing good in the world". Grants received from the Foundation enable Rotarians to tackle problems such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with solutions that provide a sustainable future. Strong financial oversight, a unique funding model and an outstanding world wide charity rating, mean that the Foundation makes the most out of monies raised by the 1.2 million Rotary members throughout the world. Indeed for the 10th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the USA. As well as providing grants for projects

that support Rotary causes, each year the Rotary Foundation awards up to 50 fellowships for Master’s degrees and 50 for Certificate studies, at premier universities around the world, which are designated as Rotary Peace Centres. Through training, study and practice, our Peace Fellows become leaders and catalysts for peace and conflict resolution. The Rotary Club of Bribie Island is currently hosting a Peace fellow who is studying for her Masters degree at the University of Queensland a designated Peace Centre. The Rotary Club of Bribie Island have been the recipients of several grants from the Foundation. For example our Cervical Cancer vaccination of 28,000 girls in Papua New Guinea (PNG) commenced with a $1,000 contribution from our Club. Several Rotary Districts in the USA and Australia also donated and with the Foundation grant, a total of US$329,500 was given to this project. This is the largest Rotary Foundation grant ever received in our District and was the brainchild of George and Mary Grant who are stalwarts of our award winning Club.
GRANTECH
I am often asked why doesn't Rotary do more local projects. Our Club does do quite a bit locally and often receives District Grants, which are small TRF grants administered by our District, to assist with this work. For example providing hearing tests at Banksia Beach State School, the selection of local students to attend Rotary Youth Programs, the provision of Friendship Benches for the two Primary Schools, supporting the Neighbourhood Centre with their work with the homeless, as well as supporting the local Naval cadets, the Moreton Hospice and the Surf Life Saving Club. You will also see our Rotary Van at the Bribie Markets on the 2nd Sunday of each month. Please come along and say hello. Notwithstanding local help, however, it is difficult to put this type of need before the desperate need of those in third world countries who don't have enough to eat, don't have clean water to drink, or when diagnosed with Cervical Cancer – will just go home to die. If you have any suggestions for a project, please contact our Foundation Director, Jeff Eustace, THE POETRY OF LIFE on 0412 353 820.

38 WE’RE HERE FOR YOU!
My thoughts around the word ‘joy’ R McKenry
‘Are you dog people?’ asked the young woman having a coffee at the next table, her dog underneath. I replied, ‘We enjoy other people’s dogs. Every Sunday we walk along the dog beach at Woorim. It’s the happiest place! The dogs are overjoyed to be let loose and they run around, glad to see each other.’ Being free! Allowed off the leash! Their joy reminds me of four men who came to live in a house we had at The Gap. They were Afghan Hazara men who had for been in detention on Nauru from 2001 until 2004.
Regular Comment Genuine? The Hazaras had been persecuted in Afghanistan for many years. They looked different and were Shia, not Sunni. Our friend’s father had been tortured and killed, his older brother killed and another kidnapped by the Taliban. Being the youngest at 19 years, his family decided to raise the necessary US $4000 to send him to somewhere in the world where he would be safe. They sold their shop and land to raise the money.
His journey included Pakistan, Singapore, Indonesia, Christmas Island and Nauru. The first time he saw the sea it terrified him. But, conscious of the sacrifice his family had made for him to survive, he never gave up hope of finding freedom and safety. Three friends arrived in Brisbane with him, all traumatised by their escape from danger but filled with gratitude, hope and the determination to make a contribution to the Australian community that had accepted them.

There are many refugee children still on Nauru after five years. Most have severe mental health symptoms. Many are suicidal. They have no permanent safe home, no certainty of the future. Social worker Fiona Owens, who was employed by International Health and Medical Services told ABC News (27/8/18) children were desperate and wanted to end their lives.
“The only thing a lot of the children are thinking about is how to die,” Owens said. Until October 5, Doctors without Borders worked with these children. Now these doctors have been expelled. No longer needed! They were given 24 hours to leave by Nauru’s government.
Thousands of Australian doctors have called for our government to act. Is money the answer? Nauru gets paid well by Australia for each refugee it accommodates. According to Amnesty International, the Government of Nauru “has received substantial benefits for permitting its territory to be used to hold refugees and asylum-seekers.” In fact, Nauru is guaranteed minimum $35.3 million annually by Australia. We’ve stopped the boats. Stopped drowning kids. Instead, we’ve killed hope. We’ve killed the will to live. Is there no alternative to cruelty as a deterrent? Have we have no compassion?

Stone Fish article I was disappointed at your article featuring a stonefish. Comments like ‘not strictly edible’ and ‘an interesting catch’ don’t exactly portray this creature for what it is. One of the most poisonous and dangerous inhabitants in the sea... and the Sandstone Point area is acknowledged as having one of Australia’s greatest concentrations of them! With a shark at least, you usually have a chance, but stand on a stonefish, fail to seek immediate medical and advice, the odds of survival are definitely not in your favour. R.Cooke Fuel Price RIP OFFS I think it is time this Government both Federally and State started to challenge the Petrol Companies and the likes of Coles over the continued RORT’ing of Fuel Prices. I suggest we are bing overcharged at least 12 cents per litre, with fuel prices going higher and higher. ACCC, R.A.C.Q, Government all need to challenge these prices. Meanwhile buy just enough to get you to a garage that is not RORT”ing you. Meanwhile those named should be challenging the on gong RORTS. Farley
ENERGY FORECASTING
An energy forecast is about knowing some of the potential energy that can influence you and how to navigate through this time with ease & grace. Energy loves momentum, so this coming month is learning what you can do to allow the flow of energy to move through you. There is no doubt that situations arise, yet it is how you respond to it that either keep energy moving or it becomes stuck causing emotional distress. This coming month shines a light on anything that could potentially be holding you back & giving you intuitive insight into how you can change your perception around the situation or person so that you can continue to grow & evolve. Not react & or make excuses. So, let’s break down how to navigate this coming month for you. Week 1 –Oct 22nd – 28th – Soul (Full Moon Oct 25th) The power of the soul is passion,
creativity & intuition. Look into your soul & connect with your higher self. The week of a full moon can create high intense emotions. So be mindful of how you are feeling & honour it. It is when we deny these emotions that they escalate. Your intuition will be revealing particular themes that act as guidance of what is not vibing with the person you are growing into as an opportunity to free yourself from them. Themes can be self-belief, anger, money/ abundance blocks, self-worth. Now how this work is that emotions stir with the full moon that can causes to react. Don’t do that. Take a step back & consider what is really being triggered by a person or situation – there is where the true message is revealed. Week 2 – Oct 29th – Nov 4th – Music For The Soul Emotions start to settle down, yet that influx of heightened sensitivity needs clearing and there is no better way than putting on your favourite music and let your body move to the music… Remember, energy loves momentum. Listen to music that uplifts your spirit & flows through every cell. As you sing & dance, there is a freedom that accompanies this action. You may even become aware of a particular song that keeps playing over in your head, or a memory of someone when you hear a song. There is a hidden message in the lyrics for you, listen carefully to the words of any repetitious songs. Week3–Nov 5th – 11th –Transformation (New Moon Nov 7th)
The beautiful card of transformation at a pivotal time accompanied with the New Moon. Transformation occurs on a cellular level. This comes after a time of internal reflection. Reflection is about going within to consider how to consciously create the life you desire. Let that question ruminate & open your mind to endless possibilities. As humans we tend to place restrictions between what we desire & your current reality. Don’t be discouraged by your current situation, rise above and remember taking inspired actions towards your dreams means they come to fruition faster than just daydreaming about them. Week 4 – Nov 12th – 18th – Illusion So many times, people start of their new Moon intentions with complete gusto then the motivation falls away and they come to a screaming holt. In most cases it is due to being impatient & not trusting the process of how your dreams or desires come to fruition. Your mind is a powerful tool. You can either use it lift you up or tear you down.
You decide. This card comes through to remind you that you are more powerful than you realize, breakthrough the illusion holding you back & rediscover a new you. You are not your thoughts, it’s what you do with them that defines your outcome. Tim Mander, Deputy Leader of the opposition and Shadow Treasurer said…….. Labor’s Long Weekend of Infamy shines light on Palaszczuk incompetence
LNP Deputy Leader Tim Mander said Queenslanders should never forget the Palaszczuk Government’s weekend of infamy where they dumped 75 annual reports late on a Friday night, slugged punters with a new tax, while giving nothing back to industry, and stacked government boards with Labor mates and cronies. “This weekend will haunt Labor and Annastacia Palaszczuk until election day 2020,” Mr Mander said. “The Friday night report dump showed Queenslanders how bad the Palaszczuk government is. “The Palaszczuk government is one of hubris, cover ups and secrecy. “No wonder they dumped these reports under the cover of darkness. “They show systemic failures across multiple departments, horrendous waste of taxpayer’s money and government departments in complete meltdown. “Rail Fail will never be fixed with Labor in charge, our health system is back to the bad old days when Annastacia Palaszczuk sat around the

Community Bligh cabinet table that threatened to split the department in half, child safety is a mess and our stadiums are borderline broke. “Labor have been in power most of the past 30 years and this government makes the economic train wrecks of the Bligh and Beattie governments look good. “Labor have a complete lack of openness and transparency. “Annastacia Palaszczuk presides over a government with a culture of cover up and secrecy. “We’ve got QR in crisis, health in crisis and the government is trying to hide their annual reports under the cover of darkness. “We also saw Labor announce a number of Board appointments and most were cosy jobs for former Labor politicians. “Annastacia Palaszczuk is running a government for the unions and Labor mates while Queenslanders continue to miss out. “Labor knows none of these controversial board appointment pass the pub test and it’s why they have made these announcements on Grand Final and Riverfire long weekend to avoid scrutiny. “It’s just more evidence of how Annastacia Palaszczuk is arrogant and out of touch. “To top it all off, punters will be slugged with a new tax from tomorrow and sadly for the racing industry only a tiny one off sugar hit will be pumped back into it with the rest going into Jackie Trad’s coffers.”

Nepalese high tea at Beachmere
A Huge achievement!
A beautiful morning tea at Noela’s Garden Donnybrook on Saturday 6th October was held to celebrate Grace Van Peype of Toorbul “90”th Birthday Grace celebrated her day with family and friends and 19 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and 12 great great grand children.
Mick Hogan, with our Nepalese visitors, Januka, Binod and Geet. Beachmere residents Karen and Eric Wallwork, with their friend Mick Hogan, have been working hard to improve the lives of the poorest Nepalese people for more than ten years by supplying beanies, scarves and blankets to the poor. The group was also able to provide assistance with the urgent need for rice and food after the 2015 major earthquake decimated these poor areas. Karen has organised an amazing group of ladies who have knitted and crocheted for years to ensure these people have something warm to wrap up in.
Soon they will welcome Januka, Binod and Geet who have come to Australia from Nepal to thank all their supporters. Januka will spend several days at the Royal Brisbane Hospital visiting women's health areas of Breast Screening, Maternal services, Personal Health, HIV and Depression. She will also spend time at the Australian Cervical Cancer Foundation so she

can write on these issues, and educate Nepalese women, when she returns home. Binod, a musician, will visit Sydney learning more at the Conservatory of Music. They will celebrate Dashain, which is a festival of the joyousness of good over evil, with friends and the Nepalese Community in Brisbane.
Geet, their 8 year old daughter, is perhaps the youngest author in Nepal. She had a dream to write a book and succeeded with ‘The Treasure Hunt’. Geet hopes to present her book to our local schools.
On Thursday 18 October at the Beachmere Activity Centre, Karen, with the assistance of Amanda from Pineapple Catering, is hosting a Thank You Luncheon / High Tea especially for those ladies who have donated their time, wool and energy in supplying warm beanies and scarves to assist the people of Nepal. Much love & prayers.

NIOVEMBER
Welcome to November beautiful souls and the 11:11 energy. This is a rare and special period of time as 11 is the vibration of the universe. As universal energy is the energy that sustains all life, this entire month is not only transforming but potentially amazing. The universe wants to give us exactly what we require to be happy. Strong messages and synchronicity are what is to be expected during November. Messages from the universe under 11:11 will be crystal clear, this is the perfect time to ask for a sign or for guidance. Awakening and self-development through the merging of the three selves, the physical self, the mind and the heart is what November is all about. A slower pace, rest and self-love is what needed for insight, creation and personal growth. You will hear and trust your instincts more if you don’t burn your candle at both ends. Slow down and let the magic happen.
It is true that the experience of the 11:11 on each individual is unique, however the common thread is that the 11 energy brings intuition and importantly insight into what brings you happiness and joy. Happiness is a conscious choice. It is also giving and contagious. Through our own happiness we actually inspire and enable other people to feel happiness. Be the reason someone else smiles. As there is always light, there is also shade and under this particular energy you may find you lose things that no longer serve you or that you no longer need in your life. Don’t be sad about these losses, be grateful for the space they provide. Space you can fill with adventures and people that bring you happiness and joy. It’s a reoccurring theme. Sunday the 11th of November is where the universe lines up all the pure 11 energy, harness the energy of this day. Many powerful events have occurred on this day in history. The combing of the 11th of the 11th with this 2018/11 year is rare and certainly not to be missed. Have a happy and harmonious month, Michelle For your personal Numerology reading littleGreekgirl@live.com

Plan to turn Bribie Island eyesore into aquaculture hub
The Palaszczuk Government has announced a plan to turn rundown buildings on Bribie Island into an innovative world-leading aquaculture hub.
Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said aquaculture was a rapidly growing industry in Queensland.

“Since I became Minister last year, I have made it my mission to actively seek opportunities to grow the aquaculture industry in Queensland,” Mr Furner said. “We know how popular our seafood products are not only in the burgeoning Asian market, but also in hungry domestic markets down south. “By supporting new investment in the aquaculture industry, we will see more jobs and more premium seafood being grown right here in Queensland. Mr Furner said the land is part of the Bribie Island Research Centre (BIRC), an aquaculture research and development facility owned and operated by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).
“Over the past 12 months, we have received a number of unsolicited enquiries from both the public and private sectors to use parts of the Bribie Island Research Centre (BIRC) site for aquaculture. “As a result, my department will run an open, public process seeking expressions of interest from interested parties to use the land for aquaculture and related purposes, once all relevant approvals have been obtained.” “The site was decommissioned in November 2009 and has since fallen into disrepair.
“The rejuvenation of this site will provide a rare opportunity to invest in Queensland’s growing aquaculture industry which currently is worth an estimated $125 million to the Queensland economy.
“A new aquaculture venture would align perfectly with the research and development work currently undertaken at BIRC by DAF, CSIRO and the Sunshine Coast University.”
Mr Furner said work would shortly start with the Moreton Bay Regional Council to progress the necessary approvals that will be required to advance the project.
“There is significant community interest in the future use of the land and the expression of interest process will allow us to identify the outcome that maximises the benefit to the aquaculture industry and the local and Queensland economies. “It is anticipated that an aquaculture development option will provide significant economic development and job opportunities during both the construction phase and once the enterprise becomes operational.
“When finalised, details of the expression of interest process will be publicly available on the DAF website – www.daf.qld.gov.au”
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has pledged $3.5 million to protect our children from cyberbullies.
It comes in response to the AntiCyberbullying Taskforce Report ‘Adjust Our Settings: A community approach to address cyberbullying among children and young people in Queensland’ released today.
The Premier hosted a lunch event to announce the government’s response to the report and was attended by members of the Taskforce including Chair Madonna King as well as the parents of “Dolly” Everett who tragically took her life after being bullied online earlier this year. All 29 report recommendations have been accepted. The $3.5 million commitment includes: •
•
•
$2 million over two years to develop and roll out awareness and education campaigns to assist the community, parents and carers and young people to understand what cyberbullying is, the harm it can cause and, how we need to address it.
$1 million for schools including $450,000 in funding to the Dolly’s Dream Foundation in partnership with the Alannah and Madeline Foundation to implement the eSmart Schools Program in Queensland schools. Dolly’s Dream Foundation will match this funding with a further $300,000.
$500,000 to provide grants to young people and to youth and community organisations that want to undertake their own initiatives to address cyberbullying.
need to make change. Teenagers said the same.
“This is a whole community issue and if our recommendations are implemented, parents will receive the assistance they want, schools will be better set up to investigate complaints and our focus all along - our children will be safer.’' The Premier formed the 16-member Taskforce in February and had Cyberbullying added to the national COAG agenda.
$450,000 will be provided to the Allanah and Madeleine Foundation run in conjunction with Tick and Kate Everitt. The Everetts lost their daughter Dolly to cyberbullies.
“Like Bruce and Denise Morcombe, Tick and Kate are among the bravest people I’ve ever met,” the Premier said. “This grant will enable Tick and Kate to spread the anti-bullying message particularly in regional Queensland.”
Queensland already has laws providing five year jail terms for the worst cases of cyberbullying. The penalty increases to seven years where violence is involved. The government recently passed legislation surrounding the sharing of intimate images. One of the most contentious issues surrounds the banning of mobile phones in schools. The Taskforce leaves the issue to parents and principals to decide.
The Taskforce Report calls on the federal government to adopt national ‘right to be forgotten’ laws to allow the removal of damaging online information.
“The clear message from the Taskforce is there is no ‘one thing’ we can do to stop cyber bullies – we have to do EVERYTHING,” the Premier said.
The Premier has also called for a Queensland office of the national E-Safety Commissioner.
The Taskforce held more than 50 consultations across the state and received 364 written submissions.
“It follows children everywhere.
“And we all have a part to play.”
Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce Chair Madonna King said the most important recommendations are about ongoing input from children and parents. “It’s been heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure,” Ms King said.

Another round of white spot disease surveillance testing has just been completed in Moreton Bay and the Logan River, with no positive results returned for the virus that causes white spot disease. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said the results were important as some of the prawn farms on the Logan River prepare to go back into production.
“It is great to see some of the affected farms getting back into business and hopefully the results will give them a bit of reassurance before starting up again,” Mr Furner said. “The Palaszczuk Government allocated a $20 million package which was rolled out over the past two years. The State Government said they will continue to support the industry by working with the prawn farms as they go back into production to ensure a smooth and straightforward transition. A friendly reminder to fishers in the Logan River area that fishing is prohibited within 100 metres of prawn farm inlet and outlet channels around the prawn farms, as well as in all drainage channels on the farms.
The legislation was put in place to help safe-guard the farms and is especially important now they are going back into production. The latest round of surveillance for the white spot virus is part of a national program to confirm that the virus isn’t present elsewhere in Australia.
White spot disease movement restrictions remain in place for prawns, yabbies and marine worms from Caloundra to the New South Wales border and west to Ipswich. Previous rounds of surveillance had returned positive results for the virus causing white spot disease.

Queensland Vote on Abortion Legislation
The Termination of Pregnancy Bill has been past in Parliament last week with 50 votes to 41 to decriminalise pregnancy termination in Queensland. This law now means abortion in Queensland will be available at up to 22 weeks. Over a few days the state members each gave their emotional speech in Parliament and below is Simone Wilson, Member for Pumicestone’s speech. The ISLAND and Surrounds newspaper does not have any opinion at all on this new legislation. Simone Wilson MP Member for Pumicestone Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018 Mr Speaker, I rise to make a contribution to the Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018 and start by acknowledging the work of the Committee comprising the Members for Thuringowa, Caloundra, Maiwar, Nicklin, Rockhampton and Lytton, in addition to the Committee Secretariat, Hansard reporters and all others who assisted the Committee in their work in considering this Bill. I thank those who came before the Committee in person and those who provided submissions on what is a highly emotive and deeply complex issue. I thank also the officials from the Department of Health for their contributions to this Bill. As a first time Member of this Parliament, I cannot imagine a more sensitive and challenging Bill for a Committee to consider and I thank the Members for their work on behalf of myself and the Pumicestone Electorate. If I can begin with the comments of general practitioner, Dr Heather McNamee during her evidence to the Committee who said “I would rather no Australian woman ever had to have an abortion ever again, but contraception is not perfect, and lives are far from perfect. In fact, there is a lot of chaos in women’s lives”. I wish to thank Dr McNamee for this succinct and rather powerful remark which has helped me to consider my position regarding the details of this Bill. Mr Speaker, the primary objectives of the Bill ask us to consider enabling the reasonable and safe access by women to terminations of pregnancy and to regulate the conduct of registered health practitioners in relation to terminations. As deep and divided as honourable member’s beliefs may be in regards to the termination of a pregnancy, I hope to make my contribution in a manner that will not diminish or inflame those feelings. From my perspective, the issue of whether we agree or not with abortion becomes almost immaterial if we are to accept, as we are asked to by the Minister for Health, the premise that termination of pregnancy is a health matter and therefore a matter between a woman and her medical practitioner. We are asked to consider the health and wellbeing of the woman, which, as legislators we should always do. But by virtue of this, we are also asked to not consider the rights of the unborn child as the full provisions of this Bill imply that this right has not yet been established by birth.
Community I can not and will not support this premise. For me personally, being raised with strong Catholic beliefs has, I am sure, shaped my views on matters of life and death. That being said, the last thing that we, as Catholics, would ever seek to do is to impose our values, beliefs and ideals or their consequences upon others. I do know so much as to the fact that my life journey is not representative of all women and a termination of pregnancy is something so far removed from my world as an individual. I have considered this deeply in my reflections on this Bill and its objectives. I also know so much as to the irrefutable fact that what makes abortion safe is when it is available on the woman’s request and is universally accessible and affordable. From this point, I believe that the current laws as they stand in sections 224 to 226 of the Criminal Code Act 1899 that establish it as unlawful to attempt to procure a termination of pregnancy (except for some vague saving clauses that allow abortions in certain circumstances) make sense only for punitive and deterrent purposes. But they have failed on both accounts. I lean towards to the views of the World Health Organisation who state that ‘restricting legal access to abortion does not decrease the need for abortion’. If we are then to accept that the need for abortions (whether we agree with abortion or not) will continue regardless, as they continue to do right now in Queensland - then maintaining the criminalization of abortion within the Criminal Code is no longer, in my view, fit for purpose. The current laws also place medical professionals in a treacherous position because of the very murky uncertainty of illegality they are clinically confronted with. On the grounds I have just outlined, I support the provisions of this Bill that seek to decriminalise the termination of pregnancy. I do however add a caveat to this support – that being that abortions will continue to be performed in Queensland, the status quo will remain as it has for many many years, regardless of the debate today and despite the successful passage of this Bill or otherwise. Other provisions set out in this Bill to achieve its objectives in good conscience I will not be supporting. I do not support there being no adequate safeguard against the termination of potentially healthy babies from very late terms abortions, including abortions on babies up until full term. What I have found to be conflicting in all this is the current provisions in law around stillborn babies and please allow me to explain. Queensland Health issues an information sheet about what happens if your baby is stillborn. It states that if your baby is stillborn at 20 weeks or more, or weighed 400 grams or more at birth, or died after birth, the law in Queensland requires a burial or cremation. It goes on to say that “Your baby’s birth and death must be registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages”. I am conflicted by this on a number of levels. If we approach this more cynically, then one could draw from this that the life of a stillborn baby is more valued than the life of an aborted baby even if they happen to be at the same gestation - 20 weeks or more. It is inconceivable to me that this Bill seeks to enable terminations up to 22 weeks without a woman needing a reason, and beyond 22 weeks with the
permission of a medical practitioner who consults another and agrees, yet there remains a different set of rules for the unborn aborted child to that of the stillborn of the same gestational period. The regulations surrounding a stillborn baby from 20 weeks gestation onwards recognise the life of the child – yet there is no recognition for the aborted even up to full term. This in my view leaves a sharp and inhumane distinction of the value of life between a stillborn child and one that has been aborted. There is one other aspect of this Bill that I will touch on and that is the lack of safeguards and permissions for younger girls, minors, who seek a termination of their unwanted pregnancy. Unless I have missed this in my readings, and I am happy to stand corrected, both the Bill and the Committee’s Report are silent on this. Apart from the Bill noting that a Woman means a female person of any age – there appears to be no distinction to child who seeks an abortion and to a adult seeking an abortion. I would like to hear from the Minister in regards to this as I believe there would be numbers of young girls, minors, in Queensland with unplanned pregnancies seeking abortion. What are the protections for them? Must a parent be notified before an abortion is provided? Must a parent consent before an abortion is provided to their child? Do the same provisions of no reason up to 22 weeks apply? What happens to a child who seeks a later term abortion after 22 weeks? What are the protections for minors and why has such an important issue as this been left silent in this Bill? I respectfully ask those who support the Bill to bear this in mind and not sweep minors under a dirt pile of legislating at all costs. This is too important.
Time for supermarket ‘bastards’ to pay!!!! Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett Said.
WE’RE HERE FOR YOU! 43 they were in 1992. “We saw the Queensland Dairyfarmers’ Organisation (QDO) lead a proactive campaign for a very reasonable 10c per litre drought milk levy – but all the supermarkets served up in reply to public pressure were half-baked measures to plug their own already unfairly price home brand products. “Buying supermarket private label milk, even packaged with the drought levy, is worth less to dairy farmers than branded milk. “Clearly public and political pressure are not enough. Year after year the supermarkets have not budged – but that time is now over. “The Queensland Liberal National Party completely support a Royal Commission into the major supermarkets and finally getting answers from those responsible for this mess.”

Charity and medical scams
Scammers are heartless and can strike during desperate times of need. How the scam works Scammers take advantage of people seeking to donate o a good cause or find an answer to a health problem. Charity Scams involve scammers collecting money by pretending to work for a legitimate cause or charity, or a fictitious one they have created. Often Scammers will exploit a recent natural disaster or crisis that has been in the news. These scams divert much-needed donations away from legitimate charities. Charities must be registered with government – donate confidently by checking their registration first. Miracle cure scams offer a range of products and services that can appear to be legitimate alternative medicines, usually promising quick and effective remedies for serious medical conditions. The treatments are often promoted using false testimonies from people who have been ‘cured’. Weight loss scams promise dramatic weight loss with little or no effort. This type of scam may involve an unusual or restrictive diet, revolutionary exercise, a ‘fat-busting’ device, breakthrough pills, patches or creams. You may be required to make a large advance payment or enter into a long-term contract to receive ongoing supplies. Fake online pharmacies offer counterfeit drugs and medicines at very cheap prices, and sometimes provide them without a doctor’s prescription. These drugs may have limited or no active ingredients, which can have lethal consequences. Protect yourself If you are approached by a charity street collector, ask to see their identification. If you have any doubts about who they are do not pay. • Check the Australian Charities not for profit association’s list of registered charities. • Consult your healthcare professional if you are considering a ‘miracle’ or ‘instant-fix’ claim about medicines, supplements or other treatments. • Ask yourself: if this really is a miracle cure, wouldn’t your healthcare professional have told you about it?
It’s about time Queenslanders got answers as to why our major supermarkets in Coles, Woolworths and Aldi have been allowed to get away scot free destroying our local dairy industry. Liberal National Party Shadow Minister for Agriculture Tony Perrett today said enough is enough and it is time for a Royal Commission into how the supermarket giants are milking the system and squeezing our dairy farmers. “What we have seen happen to Queensland’s dairy industry is a national disgrace and it’s time to find out who is responsible,’ said Mr. Perrett. “It’s time for these Supermarket ‘bastards’ to come out from behind their glossy spin doctors and face the tough questions. “The public and our farmers deserve answers on how the race for corporate profits through the $1/L milk price has forced out 75 per cent of Queensland’s dairy farmers in the last 18 years - from more than 1,500 to just 386 dairy farms in the state. “In Queensland a dairy farmer is leaving the industry approximately every 5-7 days due to the behaviour of the supermarkets. “Let’s be very clear, our dairy farmers are not shutting down because of a drop in demand – Queenslanders drink 84 litres of fresh white milk per person per year – they are closing because they are This article extract from ACCC – getting as much for their milk now as The Little Black Book of Scams

Summer of Cricket
Just when you think that the Steve Smith and David Warner saga is over, up it pops again. All because the Aussie Cricket side is struggling to conquer Pakistan in the Test Cricket Series abroad and everyone seems worried that there is not enough talent or leadership in Australia - Really? How about we all move on and accept that we have to remould the summer of Test Cricket in Australia without Smithy and Warner. I heard again this week on one my favourite sports radio stations a few opinions that suggested that Cricket Australia may relax the suspensions of Steve Smith and David Warner. Why is this your ask? Because it would allow these suspended sportsmen an opportunity to play Shield Cricket and have them ready for next year’s Ashes Series and World Cup. It appears that both Smith and Warner can only play ‘Grade Cricket’ during suspension. The opinions of a few learner friends on Sports Radio suggested that the boys (Smith and Warner) would have expected a lesser penalty for the ball tampering saga in South Africa because the ICC only handed out fines and single match suspensions to the players. Either way, the decision is made by Cricket Australia and we have to move on and look forward to a fun summer of cricket. I am not suggesting for a minute that the suspensions or loss of these players is not significant to the great game, it’s just that it has all happened for a reason. Steve Smith is a good young man – this is what happens when the governance and organisational leadership faulters. These events have forced the game to slow down and allow us to see a few new names enter the field – who knows we may get to see the next great fast bowler or new number 3 batsman emerge. I have a suggestion for Cricket Australia and the current and future sponsors of the crazy game. Let’s all get behind Tim Payne and the new team and help them enjoy the game when they arrive home – win, lose or draw because it’s a sport for all not for a few heroes. Let’s hope we see Steve Smith, Dave Warner and Cameron Bancroft back at the crease sometime into 2019 but in the meantime, enjoy the summer and get behind our new names of Australian Cricket – there are plenty of budding cricketers out there looking to wear a baggy green.

October Fishing Report
TIDE TIMES FOR NOVEMBER 2018 Times and heights of high and low waters 10ʼ e° 22ʼ s long 153°lat 27 Australia, East Coast – BRISBANE BAR
This fishing report is being written on the first sunny day in a long while. October started wet, cleared, then, on Tues 9th, the bad weather set in for a week and a half.
As I wrote in my last report, “Weather is particularly important to fishing in and around Bribie …… weather events affect temperature, salinity, water clarity, nutrient quality, and wave heights, among other things – which all go towards a good day or not-so-good day out fishing.” Well, this weather event certainly did all of that! Temperatures across the South-East dropped by about 4 degrees over that time, rain came in squalls across Moreton Bay and the Passage, and fishing (or, at least, catching) came to a standstill.
So, there have been some bits and pieces about the place, but even the die-hard fishers have kept their boats on their trailers, most days.
Prior to the rain, there were plenty of flathead for the taking, right through the Passage. The Avon wreck has been a favourite spot, especially over near the mangroves. Michelle and Samantha got lucky up that way, with two sand flathead and one mud flathead caught on the morning rising tide, with squid. Ray also found three flatties, and a tailor, on the public holiday Monday, using pilchards for bait.
Soft plastics have also been a great help with the flathead, especially drifting alongside sandbanks and casting over them. They are also handy for casting into the mangroves or oyster leases up that way. Water clarity has dropped a bit, with the rain, but plastics have still been working a treat.
The long weekend was a good time to be out on the water (except the Sunday, which was a washout). There seemed to be fishing action almost anywhere. Jimi and his mates spent the day around the first marker south of the Bribie bridge, chasing mackerel. I didn’t hear a lot about any mackerel they caught but they did catch (and released) about a dozen sharks, both black-tipped and cat sharks. The brown-banded cat shark, also called bamboo shark, is smallish, harmless and likes to hang around doing not much at all, on the ocean floor, except eating, mating and laying “mermaid-purse” eggs on the sea grass. There is no lower size limit on them, but they must not be kept if longer than
Callum near the Avon wreck on a falling tide with soft plastic lure. 50cm and about to be dinner..
1.5m. Gently fried with olive oil, salt and pepper, they are as good a meal as any fish. Bream and sand whiting have been the other mainstays of fishing this month. The bream have been taking just about any bait, but mullet is always a good start. The best way to use mullet for bait is as a strip fillet. Mullet is great because it’s so oily - the fillet attracts fish by the scent and movement in the water. Unlike with pilchards, it is best to scale the fish first. Then cut a strip, about 2ocm, just before you hook it up, through the tail of the fillet, where the skin is toughest, so you don’t lose your bait at the first tug.
There have been some really nice-sized bream out there. Shane and his Dad, Chris, had lots of bites on a recent rising tide and did manage to pull in some good bream and a couple of moses perch as well. A few bream of more than 30cm have been caught around the bridge and south of it.
The sand whiting hasn’t minded the weather at all and has been showing up in any of the creek mouths in the Passage, from Lime Pocket to Elimbah Creek especially. Richard has had a few good hauls of whiting, mostly north of Pacific Harbour. Remember, sand whiting is not spotty across the top like winter whiting; it is more silvery and MUST be measured to keep (more than 23cm). The beach around the south end of Bribie has sometimes been good for whiting too, although it has been pretty heavily hit with the wind, of late. Last to mention, the crabbing should really pick up over the next few weeks, since the sun has come out. The mud crabs have reportedly been flushed out from the creeks and I have seen a few big ones. The sand crabs are another story….

PROUD TO BE PATRON VMR BRIBIE ISLAND
DISGRACEFUL - MORE LABOR LIES ! It would seem the Minister for Transport and Main Roads can’t lie straight in bed. In a recent media release (see page 8 of this edion), Labor’s Mark Bailey told a bare-faced lie when he stated that the $20 million pledge by the Federal Govern-ment to fast-track congeson and safety planning projects on Bribie Island Road has “dried up”. The truth is that this funding is sing in Canberra ready to go, as it has been since announced back in July this year. Mark Bailey however prefers to leave it there rather than doing his job to get it on the ground in Pumicestone. In addion, this funding has never been conngent on the result of the Long-man byelecon, more Labor lies. To deliberately try to mislead people in the Pumicestone Electorate is disgraceful. Get behind my push for a safer Bribie Island Road by signing my peon today. Visit www.fixbribieislandroad.com.au Whilst talking about Labor lies…
I am thrilled to connue my role as Patron of VMR Bribie Island and extend a hearty congratulaons to our new Commodore, Liz Radajewski. It’s good to know we’re in such safe hands!
OUT AND ABOUT
It’s been hard for QLD LABOR to admit
NEW JETTY FOR SANDSTONE POINT - SIGN MY PETITION These commied locals are the driving force behind a proposal to bring beer access to the Pumicestone Passage from the north/west side of the Bribie Island Bridge (Sandstone Point side). We will be working together to lobby the State Government for a public all-access dal jey to be built where there is already public parking and toilet infrastructure in place. Join us by signing my peon calling on the State Government to fund thiss proposal and commence the planning and construcon so we can all have greater access to our prisne waterways to enjoy. Peons can be signed by vising www.jey4sandstonepoint.com.au or drop into my electorate office.
THANKS FOR SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL FARMERS
AND NOW IN 2018/19 OUR VERY OWN
Aer what can only be described as a devastang me for or the Strawberry Industry, the one shining light for our local farmers has been the level of support shown by our community. With our ongoing support, Pumicestone’s two local farms will connue to produce the very best strawberries in the State. We will stand beside them all the way!
Joondoburri Conference Centre, left to rot in 2009, is being sold off to the highest bidder!
You shouldn’t have to make your way to me to raise concerns. That is why I hold regular mobile offices across the electorate. Check out the days and mes listed below and feel free to come along to any one of these – I’m always ready to help. If you are working and can only make it aer-hours, give my office a call and I would be happy to arrange a later meeng for you.
