The Bribie Island Gem Festival A Major Feature in “The Island’s” Calendar
The Bribie Island Gem and Fossicking Club will be holding its annual Gem Festival on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of September at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, Sunderland Drive, Banksia Beach. The entry fee is a gold coin donation and the day will be packed with activities for all age groups. The Bribie Island Gem & Fossicking Club has held a Gem Festival every year since its foundation in 1998. And with over 2000 people attending last year’s Festival, the event has become a major feature in the Island’s annual calendar. I recently had an opportunity to catch up with two of this year’s organiser’s, Margaret Thompson and Phil Scutts. “We are expecting to host around 70 stall holders this year and are planning for upward of 2000 visitors.” Phil said. “This is our main show of the year with demonstrations by Club members throughout the weekend, entertainment

Third prize is a glass pendant designed and made by Lyn Manawatu and Lana Daley on a sterling silver chain by Barbara Mackrill, with fourth prize being an exquisite handmade throw quilt donated by the Art Centre Quilters Group. “This is our eighteenth Bribie Island Gem Festival and we wanted to make it an extra special event,” said Margaret. The kids fossicking, which is free to children, is always very popular and they get to keep whatever they find. The traders donate gifts and there is a raffle announced every hour over the P.A. “We have handcrafted jewellery and sales of gems, mineral specimens, fossils and rough cut stones as well as silversmithing, faceting, enamelling and beading demonstrations,” said Margaret. Traders and stall holders come from all over Queensland to take part in the Bribie Island Gem Festival as it is seen as a landmark event. “It’s always a great fun day for everyone,” said Phil. “And because it’s over two days it gives everyone an opportunity to attend.” The atmosphere is electric with great music and great food. “One of our members roasts the most succulent beef and we serve hot beef rolls with gravy that are to die for.” said Margaret. “It’s a real show atmosphere”. I asked Margaret and Phil about the Gem Club and where they get their gems from. “A lot of
people go out and dig for them,” said Margaret. “They go out to Sapphire or Rubyvale and sometimes further afield. Members often go out caravanning with their family and they have a really good time digging for gems.” “Sometimes they buy them from other Clubs,” said Phil. “The Club is all about doing it yourself. Over the years it’s been very much a craft oriented Club. We run different programs and classes, you learn how to shape rocks, that’s called ‘cabochon’ and once you have mastered that you move on to silversmithing, faceting, enameling, etc,” said Phil. Each class is reasonably priced at $4.50 for members, making it affordable for those who are interested. The Club has social outings, fossicking expeditions and attend other festivals. “We have a great group of men and women at the Club and everyone gets on well. We have a good time together and we are always learning and gaining new skills. I love it.” said Margaret. The Bribe Island Gem Club also has a stall at the VIBE Arts and Crafts Markets, held at the Arts Centre on the last Sunday of the month. They set up gem fossicking for the kids, making it a lovely way for the family to spend the morning together exploring the markets while the kids find goodies among the gravel. The Bribie Island Gem & Fossicking Club is a not for profit organisation and the Gem Festival is their only fund raising event each year. Bribie Island Vietnam Veterans Service
Despite the Vietnam Government’s controversial decision to restrict access to the Long Tan battlefield site to mark the 50th anniversary of the bloody battle, there was an air of conciliation during the commemoration day at the Bribie Island Vietnam Veterans’ Association Memorial Park. While more than 1000 Vietnam diggers who travelled from Australia were denied full access to the Long Tan site last Thursday,
about 100 veterans marched from the Bribie Island Sports Club to the Park led by the Banksia Beach State School Drum Corp. An 11th hour plea from the Australian Government allowed some access to the Long Tan battle site with groups of 100 allowed to lay a wreath at the site of the battle’s memorial. Master of ceremonies, Paul Cooke, told the Island and Surrounds that access to the Long Tan battle site had always been subject to restrictions. “There is nothing different to what has been done before... if you wanted to go there you always had to have a permit from the Vietnam Government,’’ the past president of the Vets Association said. He said no medal wearing or flags had

been allowed in the past and obviously the Vietnam Government was worried that with more than a 1000 veterans over there to mark the anniversary that it would be seen as a celebration. “They were worried we were going over there to celebrate a victory rather than a commemorative service.’’ Eighteen Australian soldiers were killed at Long Tan and 256 official Vietnamese dead were recorded in the heavy fighting, although it is understood the number of Vietnamese killed was “something like 2500’’. Mr Cooke said Long Tan was recognised as the first and most significant battle which Australians fought in Vietnam, lasting four to five hours, whereas the battles of Coral and Balmoral lasted three and four days and more Australians were killed in those battles than Long Tan. In all, Australia
suffered 531 casualties in the Vietnam War. It took 15 years after the end of the controversial conflict for the Australian Government, led by Bob Hawke, to organise a “Welcome Home Parade’’ and a year later in 1988 the Vietnam Veteran’s Day was created. Mr Cooke said the Long Tan battle was a delicate issue for the Vietnamese with the heavy loss of life they suffered but Australians were intent on the commemoration of the battle not the publicised victory at Long Tan. And in a moving tribute to those who lost their lives at Long Tan, a vintage military aircraft, piloted by a Vietnam veteran, flew over the marching Bribie diggers with a final salute of the plane’s waving wings during the service at the Vietnam Veterans Association Memorial Park. Beachmere Vietnam Veterans Service Beachmere RSL Sub Branch held their Annual Vietnam Veterans Day on the 18th August. The guest speaker this year was Mr. Charles Sparrow who was in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps for over 20 years. He served in Vietnam in 1969 at Nui Dat with 8 Field Ambulance which was a casualty clearing station. Charlie gave a very moving speech concentrating more on the overall picture of why we were all there, and talk on the veteran, the family and the town that
supports the Veteran. Many Australians were killed in the Vietnam War and many more were either wounded, injured or became ill. Today, he acknowledged those who still carry the physical and emotional scars of their service and the families that have stood by them. He asked us to look around and see Vietnam Veterans wearing their medals, proud to have served their country, but there are some who still can’t. The memories are still too much. Many still seek

treatment to try and rid themselves of the Ghosts of the Night. They are afraid to go to sleep because of recurring dreams. Some of these Veterans live in our town. Long Tan was a major battle, but two other battles were the Battle of Coral, and the Battle of Balmoral. Bob O’Connor, a well know resident and great supporter of the Beachmere RSL Sub Branch fought in both battles and we are proud he is part of our town. Norm Shoveller who was part of the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam lived in the mountains and taught the hill
tribes how to eradicate the Vietcong, and the North Vietnamese regulars. He has many awards and letters of distinction from American and Vietnam leaders. He is part of our town.

After calling a friend and making a few phone calls I finally caught up with Erin from Beachmere. It was a very cool start to the day, rising at 3am and leaving Bribie so I could reach Beachmere before the Sunrise. Erin was kind enough to meet me on the waterfront at dawn. Waiting for the sun to rise with horse and rider was special to me, we don’t see horses on Bribie and although I had spent many years with horses in my youth, I had forgotten what it was like to be in their company. Beachmere is one of very few places that you can ride your horse without a care in the world. What a lovely place............. feel that freedom! The sun rose quickly and Erin, with her mount Bluebell rode along the waterfront into a brand new day. I loved watching those two on the beach, it reminded me that sometimes we take our surroundings for granted and forget to appreciate all that nature has to offer. On the way home I was happy to see Kangaroos and lots of birdlife at a nearby dam. If you don’t usually rise early, it’s certainly worth the effort, if you only do it once, get

We moved from a small city Equestrian Centre, to a beautiful 5 acre property. We soon began to realize that Beachmere is just a perfect little slice of heaven, where almost everyone gets along and knows one another. Beachmere has the most beautiful beach where you can take your horse for a stroll, take your dogs for walks or even just to have the perfect family day out. Saving the Planet - One School at a time
By Terry Fogarty The Bribie Island State School has commenced a sustainability program across the school to teach the children the benefits of recycling waste through understanding what can be recycled and what can be used to make compost. Earlier this year Stephen Nicholson, the school’s Special Education teacher, received the Longman Award for the Environment, having been nominated by the school for implementing and setting up a recycling program. Briefly, the project started over 2 years ago with the creation of the ‘School Wide Waste Minimisation Program’ that the Morton Bay Regional Council helps implement. It entails separating and diverting mixed recyclable items eg plastic bottles and containers, paper, cardboard, aluminum and tin, from landfill. Previously each classroom had a large garbage bin for all waste, now there are mixed recycling bins. The Council supplied yellow crates the recycling and the P & C who contributed $550 to match those, with red crates, for the landfill, making it easier for the kids to identify the correct bin for their waste items. As part of the program the School conducted a waste audit to measure waste levels produced, including food scraps, across four class rooms for a week. The data showed a large quantity of rubbish that could be collected for recycling and composting. “We also discovered that we were filling up ten rubbish trucks each year just from the classroom rubbish. It amounts to a 13cm layer of waste on our oval every year.” It has taken time to educate students and staff but the program is now running smoothly. who happily provided funding for this energy efficient composting solution. Since the recent arrival of OCSA (On Site Composting Apparatus) the school is now collecting organic waste food scraps from students and the canteen. Adding to the production of compost is a considerable amount of garden waste, leaves, lawn clippings and office paper. “What we are going to do first is using the compost on our garden. We estimate that we will get two hundred litres of compost a week if OSCA is used to its full potential.” This program is benefiting the students in many ways. It not only provides lifelong habits with far reaching environmental benefits but it also gives the children an opportunity for learning outdoors. We now know that sitting down for long periods is unhealthy. Indeed many children find the confinement of the classroom difficult. However, at the Bribie Island State School they can get their hands dirty helping prepare garden beds with the compost they helped produce, where they can nurture plants and grow vegetables and herbs themselves. Stephen even talks of introducing chickens. What a wonderful place to grow and learn! “It is vital we educate the next generation to care for our planet as it is unnecessarily suffering from the many negative impacts humans have on it. After all we only have one planet!” The only disappointment in bringing you this story is that the BISS is the only school on the Island and surrounds, participating in a sustainability program, even though the Department of Education and Training is willing to support this initiative and is actively encouraging schools to introduce it into the curriculum.

catering vans and wholesale supply.” Shane and Sue feel the success of their business has been the result of the community support they have received from the various clubs on Bribie. So in the spirit of giving back to the community, in 2013 they decided to take on an apprentice. This idea was fostered by Jake who regularly pestered them for work. Time after time, they sent him away but finally Jake’s persistence paid off and Shane offered him a job in the afternoons after school. Shane tossed all the grubby, boring and tough jobs Jake’s way, however, Jake did not flinch and never complained. So Shane and Sue decided to offer him an apprenticeship. Jake commenced his apprenticeship after finishing Year 12. The Apprenticeship Board offered a oneoff incentive payment of $750 to employers who provided apprenticeships to school leavers and that was the end of the government’s support. Normally a baker’s apprenticeship is four years. Jake will qualify at the end of his year finishing his course in three years. “Years ago it was all about how good you were at what you did, now it’s about the numbers. They are pushing employers to finish their apprentices early regardless of their skill level so they can get more kids into the system and boost their numbers. It’s not just our industry it’s across all industries, it’s just push, push, push to get them through.” Jake’s has had the advantage of being taught by the best qualified persons possible. He is a dedicated and a fast learner. When he qualifies he will be ready. But there are hundreds of apprentices who will qualify in this and other trades before being fully skilled. This is a particularly unsafe practice and worth noting especially if your kids want to take up a trade. Ensure that you have all the necessary information and read the fine print carefully. It is important to have peace of mind knowing that your kids will qualify with the required skills and safe practices going forward. So, next time you are in downtown Bongaree, stop off at the Bongaree Bakery for a famous Bribie pie, a loaf of bread or a piece of scrumptious carrot cake. For over 23 years, Shane and Sue Shepherd have been supplying baked goods to our local community on Bribie Island. They commenced and operated their own bakery from their home on Morris Street providing baked goods for their commercial van. However, running a commercial kitchen in a suburban street proved to be challenging, so when the opportunity to lease a shop on Welsby Parade presented itself they moved. Originally, their intention was to continue to produce baked goods for the van and maybe sell “a bit” out the front. Unexpectedly the demand for their baked delights far outweighed expectation and their business grew and grew. Three years of steady growth provided Shane and Sue with a sound business. So when the opportunity to purchase premises in Bongaree presented itself they decided to expand their business to include baked treats with coffee and a café. The business thus far was run solely by Shane and Sue. However, with expansion comes the need for more staff. They hired Wayne, an experienced patisserie and their pastry and cake business came into its own. Not long after taking on Wayne they hired Stephen. “When Stephen came on board he really expanded the varieties of bread we sell and we now have a sourdough using our own aged starter and make specialist breads to order”. The bakeries signature cake is the carrot cake made from their own special recipe and is very popular with the locals. Some locals will tell you that the Bongaree Bakery is best known for their meat pies. “They make the best meat pies on the island!” The meat pie recipe is Shane’s secret which he has been making and developing for twenty years. “The business just keeps growing. We now have 10 employees and 6 revenue streams including three

Local Historian Barry Clark will reveal some fascinating People, Places and Events that have shaped Bribie Island.

The name Bongaree is thought to be derived from an Aboriginal word ‘Boorabee’ referring to the koala? Early European settlers were castaways. The island had an estimated 600 Aborigines on it at the time of Flinders exploration. An Aboriginal Reserve was established near White Patch in 1877, and it is understood that by 1897 most of the island’s Aboriginal population had died. A fish cannery was opened at the northern end of the island in 1901. By 1911 Freight and passenger shipping ran regular services to Bribie Island. The SS Koopa’s first trip for paying passengers occurred on Boxing Day 1911 and was from Brisbane to Woody Point, Redcliffe and Bribie Island. The Bongaree Jetty was built in 1912. At that time Bongaree, was served by A barge that crossed the channel from Sandstone Point. A telephone link and a bowls club were established in the 1920s, and a school was opened in 1924 at Bongaree.
• • • • • • “It might not be too much to claim that Pumicestone Passage and Bribie Island contain more history, written and unwritten, than any other place in Queensland”. These are the words of historian and author Stan Tutt, former journalist with the Sunshine Coast Daily, who understood so much about this delightful island you now call home. When Matthew Flinders and Bongaree first came to Bribie Island in 1799, they set foot on the “Cradle site of Queensland”. Many years passed before anyone else came here, until three castaway convicts from Sydney ended up living with the Aboriginal people on the island, and helped John Oxley find the Brisbane River in 1824. Over the following 80 years few people came here other than cattle graziers, timber getter and oyster gatherers. An Aboriginal reserve was briefly established on the Island in 1877, but by 1897 the last original inhabitant had died. Bribie Island was regarded as “the meanest piece of country in Australia” according to a respected Politician and explorer who visited briefly in 1891. At the turn of the century the resident population of the island was less than 30 people. However, by 1912 the Brisbane Tug & Steamship company had opened up the island to residents and visitors with regular steamship trips from Brisbane to the new Jetty and settlement
at Bongaree. So, it is only just over 100 years that everything that you now see here on Bribie Island has been created. The Bribie Island Historical Society was established by Barry Clark just 8 years ago to capture the rich history of the island from some of the old timers, and to share these fascinating stories and images with residents and visitors. Barry initiated a number of Heritage Plaques and signs along the Bongaree Foreshore, and has produced brochures and informative maps to showcase some of the Heritage sites around the island. He has been the Tutor in Local History at Bribie Island U3A for many years, and has given many presentations to Clubs, Groups and Association both on and off the island. He also conducts guided heritage walks as part of the Councils “Older & Bolder” program, which this year will be on Friday 23 September at Bongaree, and Friday 30th September at Woorim. Previous presentations over dinner at Pacific Harbour Golf & Country Club have been very popular, and he has been invited to present again on the evening of Tuesday 13th September. This time the subject will be “People, Places and Events that have shaped this remarkable island you now call home”. The Bribie Butterfly House - A Far Reaching Community Project By Terry Fogarty
Many of you have experienced the beauty and tranquility of the Butterfly House at Banksia Beach and benefited from the hydroponic plants and veggies grown there. Ray and Delphine Archer first built the Butterfly House in 2009 and over the past six and half years have grown over 6000 butterfly attracting plants at the site which they have given away. As a direct result of this there has been an increase in butterfly numbers on Bribie, in particular the Monarch Butterfly. The Butterfly House at Banksia Beach is in the heart of a residential area and so is not really suitable as a tourist attraction. However, the interest in the Butterfly House has grown and it has become apparent that there is a desire in the community to have a Butterfly House where families and tourists can visit and share in this unique experience. This is only part of the reason that Ray and Delphine have embarked on a new project, to build a much larger Butterfly House, in a commercial space which will enable the community and visitors to come and experience these peaceful insects. Ray and Delphine have been actively involved in charity work for many years, both
from chrysalis to butterfly. This big open space with long benches will allow them to breed 1000 butterflies at a time. This transformation from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly is the greatest in the animal world. Often, it symbolises the beginning of a new life. In Chinese culture, two butterflies flying together are a symbol of love.
Some people say that when a butterfly lands on you it means good luck. Butterflies also stand for freedom, fun, joyous times, naturalness and purity. Ray, Delphine and all of the volunteers involved with the project would like to see the Bribie Butterfly House become the symbol of hope by transforming the lives of those who have no hope without help. We’re planting Mandevilla Laxa which is native to South America and the butterflies love it.” As Australia has strict quarantine laws, butterflies cannot be bought in from overseas therefore the Bribie Butterfly House have to breed the butterflies themselves. “It gives us an opportunity to create our breeding laboratory which means we really are an educational facility. People can come and learn how to raise butterflies and hopefully raise some at home and release them.” Meg Geer, the 2015 co-winner of the Eumundi Sculpture prize for ‘Spirit Orb’, the 2015 winner of the Mathew Flinders Art Prize and a volunteer, is designing the ‘Welcome Gate’ for the Butterfly House, as well as overseeing and managing some of the design aspects. “We just wanted to make the entrance very special, we wanted you to feel like you’re walking into a magical world when you enter the Butterfly House”. There will be an extensive butterfly breeding laboratory. As you enter the Butterfly House, through the ‘Welcome Gate’, there will be a viewing area three metres in length, which leads you to a ten metre long window, that looks straight into the laboratory. People will be able to observe the butterflies at all stages of development, from egg to caterpillar,

They work through the Entrust Foundation who have many years of experience working in fifteen nations, with people of all cultures, genders and religious beliefs, to enable long-term change through co-operatively funding community development projects in some of the toughest places on earth. The Butterfly House is a not-for-profit endeavor, run by volunteers, with all the proceeds going to charity. But they really need our help to finish the project. The biggest cost at the moment is the coloured concrete slab. Even though the cost of the slab is one third of the normal price, thanks to the concreter and the supplier of cement donating their time, the cost is still $6000 plus GST. “We’re laying 10 cubic metres of coloured concrete so it’s a big slab”. Australian Navy Cadets from Sandstone Point Exchange to HMCS Quadra Canada 2016
In July – August 2016 I had the privilege to be chosen to be an Escort Officer for Australian navy cadets attending HMQS Quadra at Comox British Columbia Canada. The Australian Navy Cadets is a member of the International Sea Cadet Association (ISCA), The International Sea Cadet Association, referred to as the ISCA, is a voluntary association of independent Sea Cadet Corps or corresponding organizations, committed to common concepts and goals, that wish to share ideas and information, and, to the best of their ability engage in cadet exchanges and to provide mutual support in order to promote the benefits of sea cadet training world-wide. Each Year the ANC sends cadets and staff to Canada, United States of America
For my trip I would like to thank the Naval Association Bribie Island and Brisbane Sub Sections for their contribution to the expenses. The Exchange incorporates naval training and cultural visits, in 2016 Australian Navy Cadets joined cadets from Canada, United States of America, Sweden, Hong Kong South Korea, Japan and the United Kingdom. A brief synopsis of the activities encountered includes: • Ceremony of the Flags – The distinctly Canadian “Ceremony of the Flags” is performed outside the Legislature in Victoria, by cadets from across the country and currently under training at HMCS QUADRA Cadet Summer Training Center in Comox BC. The Ceremony involves a 60 member marching band, 70 member guard 60 member naval field gun battery and an 18 member flag party. The pageantry and ceremony of this traditional performance is timed to the music as well as the lowering of the national flag at the legislature. • Pie Eating Competition – Sweden won, with great efforts form Australia and USA against a mass of Canadian cadets • Watched British Columbia Day
stations feature modern communication and navigation equipment found in major warships. • Cadet observed and were involved in Colors ceremony which included raising each nations flag and a daily bet on which nations flag would reach the top first – Australia won 3 out of 7 times • Day Sail on HMQS Oriole - is the sail training vessel of the Royal Canadian Navy based at CFB Esquimalt in Victoria, British Columbia. She is a 31 metres sailing ketch, currently the oldest commissioned vessel in the Royal Canadian Navy, and also the longest serving commissioned ship. • Damage Control exercise in a local variation of “Counter Sink’ • Air Rifle shooting • Naval Filed Gun drill and training culminating in a blank firing and speed competing against the Canadian Instructors – the international cadets actually won! • Cadets did On the Job Training understudying Staff cadets in music, seamanship, regulating, PT, Boating • Sports tabloid competition
• Hiked up mountain • Whaler Training including sailing, powering and pulling. The pulling craft were a real winner with it being a great display of team work. With some encouragement cadets got their stroke together to the rhythm of ‘what do you do with a drunken sailor’ • Power boat familiarization and training • Sail craft training • Seeing wild deer roam around the Naval base • Visit HMCS Ottawa - HMCS Ottawa is a Royal Canadian Navy Halifax-class frigate. Ottawa is the twelfth and final
municipality of Victoria, British Columbia, adjacent to the western limit of the provincial capital, Victoria. CFB Esquimalt comprises facilities including Naden (formerly HMCS Naden),[1] Her Majesty’s Canadian (HMC) Dockyard Esquimalt, Fleet Maintenance Facility – Cape Breton (FMF-CB), a Fire Fighting and Damage Control School, the Naval Officer Training Centre (NOTC Venture), and extensive housing including 716 personnel married quarters . • Visit Fleet Maintenance Facility – Cape Breton – where ANZAC Class frigates will be maintained • Christmas in July – carols were piped around the based and Santa was on parade and around the camp • Attended and participated in Divisions which includes a full band each morning
• Confidence course • Jetty jump which simulates disembarking from a stricken vessel • Learning Canadian drill – The unification of the Canadian Armed Forces took place on 1 February 1968, when the Royal Canadian Navy, Canadian Army, and Royal Canadian Air Force were merged to form the Canadian Armed Forces. On 16 August 2011 the three environmental commands of the Canadian Armed Forces were renamed to reflect the names of the original historical armed services. The government made the changes to align Canada with other key Commonwealth countries whose militaries use the royal designation, and to indicate that it respected Canada’s military heritage. The unified command structure of the Canadian Armed Forces was not altered by this change. Officers’ insignia was also changed during this period of name restorations, to match the distinctive insignia worn by the three branches of the pre-unification era. The navy added the executive curl to their gold bars. So much like Australian Army drill with Canadian Defense Force drill there is a lot of feet stamping and yelling, once the cadets got the idea that ‘atten-shun’ was

The Orca Class craft are primarily used to train naval officers and introduce sea cadets to shipboard life. The Orca Class design is based on the Pacific Class patrol boat built by Tenix Defence for the Royal Australian Navy. The design incorporates mock training stations on an enhanced bridge. These training

‘Ho’ and that you had to drive your feet through the deck, all drill seemed easy! It did still seem strange to call someone with sergeant stripes – Petty Officer though! • Sightseeing in Victoria and Vancouver • Beach party at Air Force Beach All in all a very busy schedule, especially considering it was day light until about 2200 each night! The cadets bonded very well and left with a much greater appreciation of other countries and of course Canada, the downside is that after such bonding, this inevitably led to many tears on the final day. I was proud to be a member of the Palaszczuk Government that introduced legislation this week that will do the following : 1. The “Statute of Limitations” on claims will be lifted for institutionalised children who were sexually abused. 2. If Victims have received a payment under “The Forde Inquiry Redress Scheme” they will not be excluded from making a further claim. 3. Queenslanders will now be able to mount Legal Class Actions right here in Queensland. 4. The JP Magistrate trials being currently conducted in Queensland will now form part of the normal court process. It has been a resounding success and will take a significant caseload away from the magistrates, allowing them to focus on more significant matters.

Last week in Parliament I was proud to stand up for our environment by voting for sensible tree clearing legislation. It was defeated. Sadly tree-clearing will continue, at the risk of our most valuable asset, The Great Barrier Reef. We wanted 100metres of land on each side of rivers and creeks never to be cleared, stopping erosion. This was defeated. We wanted to allow land to be re-cleared only if that land had been cleared in the last 27 years. Sadly, all trees can now be knocked down. Every 40 minutes an area the size of the Brisbane exhibition grounds gets cleared. Muddy water (erosion) flows into the Great Barrier Reef waters, the sun heats the water by 2-3 degrees and the coral dies. I never want to have to say “That’s where The Great Barrier Reef Used to Be”.

Ok, you have a nagging suspicion that this is due to creamy pastas and warming puddings that you have inhaled for the past few months, but surely it has nothing to do with you never leaving your lounge chair for so long that cobwebs hang off your earlobes. Spring! That time of year when most people decide to clean their homes and their lives, the time of year that anyone worth anything in the fitness industry offer a 12 week challenge. “Why?” I hear you ask, “Why now?” Well my slowly expanding friends, it is because Spring is when the outside becomes warmer and a warmer outside means that pasty humans will slowly emerge from beneath layers of fluffy, shapeless clothing and discover a whole extra them. “Eeeeeek!!! Who is this person???” you will gasp as you look in the mirror while frantically tossing clothing into a “mysteriously shrunk” pile on your bed. “What am I going to wear to the races, BBQ’s, beach!!” Taaadaaaa it’s 12 week challenge time! These are designed to help you spend a very short time achieving pretty fabulous results that will be revealed right before the Christmas party season. Yes just when you really need to be healthy, strong and stress free to survive family visits! “But do these 12 week things actually work?” I hear you ask (spooky isn’t it how I can hear everything you say…) Yes they do! 12 week challenges are focused on the end result. If you do what you are shown to do, are honest with yourself and understand that you are accountable for a very small part of your year, you will get some seriously awesome benefits to your health, happiness and confidence with very little effort. Like anything, you get out what you put in. As your honest Fitness professional I will tell you that
we have had clients complete previous 12 week challenges who have lost 21kgs, Yay! But we have had others that have had less than wonderful results. These are the ones who ignore the nutrition program “but I’m sure it said 3 cupcakes a day, didn’t it?” They miss training sessions “Sorry I forgot that I train every week at 3pm on Tuesday, I was busy eating cupcakes” They forget to go to the classes “Damn! I meant to come but the cupcakes were just coming out of the oven”. They just can’t find time to go for cardio “My walking shoes had cupcake mix spilt on them”. They suddenly have to go out and party every weekend “It was a tequila cupcake party!” In other words they made no attempt to make changes to their lives at all yet still expected to change their lives. Yep, it’s weird isn’t it? Basically they say “I’m going to do exactly what I do now and expect my life to change because although I am not doing anything you advise me to do, I’m disappointed that nothing worked” So why 12 weeks? Because you will FEEL a difference after 2 weeks, you will be TOLD by people you look better/healthier/smaller after about 6 weeks, YOU will SEE the differences after about 8 weeks and those last 4 weeks are spent getting the absolute best results and when you walk around smiling and raving about how easy it was to feel and look this great and go out and buy smaller clothes. So what are YOU doing for the next 12 weeks? Same old, same old, with embarrassing Christmas photos again? Off to buy a small tent to wear to the beach? Spending money on larger clothes? DRAGONS ABREAST By Terry Fogarty
Twenty years ago, Dr. Don McKenzie of Vancouver, Canada, introduced dragon boat paddling to peo-ple treated for breast cancer. As founder and coach of the first team ‘Abreast in A Boat’ he was con-vinced of its benefits. It seems unbelievable now that prior to 1995, the prevailing medical wisdom worldwide was that women who’d had breast cancer surgery should not participate in upper body exercise. It was assumed that this would cause and/or aggravate complications like lymphoedema. Dr. McKenzie has now established that dragon boating improves the general strength, health and well-being of breast cancer survivors. From a novice team of 24 women to hundreds of teams in 5 continents and thousands of paddlers world-wide, the magic of Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Paddling continues to evolve. The breast cancer survivor dragon boat movement in Australia was founded by Michelle Hanton, OAM, in the Northern Territory in 1998. Following on from the Canadian success, it didn’t take long before many new clubs were formed. There are now over 200 breast cancer survivor teams worldwide with 40 member groups here in Australia that are part of Dragons Abreast Australia. Happily, a large percentage of women these days survive
breast cancer, however after treatment, their transition back into a full and active life is often difficult. Once breast surgery is over and the radiation and/ or chemotherapy has finished, breast cancer survivors are ‘on their own’! Women who have had breast cancer can often feel isolated and in need of support from other women who have experienced the emotional and physical effects of cancer. Dragons Abreast is based on participation and inclusiveness in a supportive environment where those travelling the journey with breast cancer gradually develop their fitness levels through taking part in this ancient Chinese sport. “For many of us, it is a jolting change of pace as we switch from a whirlwind of medically driven activity suddenly being in charge of rebuilding our own health, fitness and confidence in our bodies.” Being able to do all those things in the company of others who have travelled to same path can often help to restore the confidence, the spark and the sense of adventure needed to enjoy a full and active life de-spite breast cancer. “There was a time with this disease that I was in fear for my life, and now I am having the time of my life.” Survivor, Vancouver. The Bribie Island Dragons Abreast Club was formed in 2008 and in March 2009 they got their first large dragon boat thanks to a $13,000 donation from the Zonta Club of Caboolture. There are now 54 mem-bers of the Bribie Island Dragons Abreast Club, 45 of whom are breast cancer survivors. Who are they? “We come in all shapes, sizes and ages. Our oldest member is 93 and our youngest is 53.” The members of the Bribie Island Dragons Abreast Club have great fun paddling down the Pumicestone Passage. “Sometimes we are joined by dolphins, turtles and the occasional
dugong.” Apart from local events, Club members also participate in State and National Regattas, with an International Regatta every four years. In 2010 some members attended the International Regatta in Peterborough, Canada, where over 2000 breast cancer survivors, from all parts of the world gathered to celebrate their race against breast cancer. In 2014, the International Regatta was held in Sarasota, Florida, where 3500 attended including members of the Bribie Island Dragons Abreast Club. “You won’t believe the fun and friendship they experience while out in the Dragon Boat.” “We recently took part in the Maroochydore Regatta, it was over 17 kilometres. We had 20 members in the boat and some of us took a break from time to time and others took up the slack but actually no one stopped for long. After a while you get over the pain barrier and you get into a rhythm. We were really proud of ourselves and we had a great time. The average age in the boat was 67. The club has grown alot in the last 18 months and we have purchased a 10 person boat which we had no trouble filling”. The Club is highly effective in promoting the

message of breast cancer awareness and education through the fun of dragon boat racing. All breast cancer survivors regardless of age, gender, sporting ability or fitness are welcome to join Dragons Abreast Bribie Island. Bribie Community Nursery Quietly Making a Difference
The Wallum Action Group operates from the community nursery, supplying native plants for community projects. This is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. Originally, they only grew native plants as they were not allowed to sell to the public. However, since they won “The Prime Ministers Award for Partnership in Business in 2006” for their work at Pacific Harbour Golf Club, they have been selling to the public and raising money for charity. All the funds raised come from the sale of plants. “People bring us lots of cuttings which is great. We actually have one customer who buys a lot from us and now she brings us lots of her cuttings.” This year the Bribie Community Nursery has donated just over $39,000. They have purchased three diabetes pumps, for three children in need, at a cost of $9,500 per pump. The last little girl was just two years old. “The diabetes pumps can be life changing. We helped one little child who was having 10 injections a day. The pump is used in the treatment of Type 1 diabetes”. How do you purchase the pumps? “We donate through the Diabetes Support Group at Caboolture Hospital”. The hospital has a wonderful way of teaching the children how to use the pumps and making

them comfortable. They give the child a teddy bear, the same size as the pump, and this is attached to the child as the pump would be. By the time the child has learnt how to use the pump, by working on the teddy bear, they are not afraid when the pump is attached to them. “We always say if you have a child in need, come and see us. If we can help we will and if we can’t we say sorry.” The Nursery has also given $12,000 to Camp Quality this year. “Camp Quality has a fun day at Brennan Park every Christmas and Santa comes with gifts and there’s also a raffle and we supply everything.” I asked the Treasurer, Ann Ward, how they decide who to support? “The committee decides who we will support and we only give to people who can’t afford it”. Over the years they have helped a number of different organisations including Maritime Safety, St Vincent de Paul and Surf Life Saving, to name a few. The Bribie Community Nursery was founded in 1990 and the land was given to them by the Council. They were incorporated in 1994. John Ward, the current President, joined the nursery in 1991 and his wife Ann has been involved since 1996. There are about twenty volunteers who come on different days. Every Thursday, a two hour bush walk, leaves the nursery at 8.30am sharp, to collect seeds and identify plants. The day we visited the Bribie Community Nursery we met six of the volunteers. Ann Ward, John Ward, Betty Linford, Julie Rigg, Dell Grant and Helen Wilkin. So if you want some plants or you have some cuttings to share, visit the Bribie Community Nursery and you will be helping a very good cause.

Ken’s World A Cat’s Idea of Cooking
With the inspiration of the Ekka and its baked produce section on one hand, and a cold 25kph unsettling wind blowing across our beautiful Bribie Island on the other, what better time, as a shower of rain lashes the living room windows, than to get out the cake baking implements and attempt to stimulate the taste buds. For me and Bill, my cat who hovers around the mixing bowl with great anticipation, baking is a pleasure, particularly when I’m not sure what I will mix together from the pantry. We, that is myself and Bill, the portly cake baking taster, have decided on a banana cake, but not just a standard vanilla essence based banana cake. In this mixture will go a liberal handful of sultanas and finely crushed pecan nuts. The result……….. A savoury, fruity and lightly textured
banana combo cake. It rose well in the electric oven but I suspect not as well if I had a wood-fired oven of my choice or a gas oven of yesteryear. Wouldn’t it be great if natural gas came our way in the foreseeable future? Anyway, with Bill having already consumed the leftover mixture, our attention now turns to an orange cake, one of my favourites. While I grated the rind from four fresh oranges, Bill decides to play soccer with all the fruit in the fruit bowl. That’s his way of helping! He makes sure everything that can move is pounced on and wrestled into submission. Making sure the orange cake is mixed in progressively, one egg at a time, with just the right amount of freshly squeezed juice splashed in at different intervals, the mixture is now looking light and fluffy. Bill, when my
back is turned, has already sampled the orange juice to make sure it is sweet enough! Now as it bakes, it’s time for us to make a tangy icing and again Bill is lightning quick to make sure it is just the right texture. He knows to get in swiftly, as once the cake is cooked and the orange rind is piled on, it is of no interest to him. Bill then does his usual commando roll on the kitchen tiles, displaying his ample stomach and indicating he would appreciate something more substantial once he receives a skull rub and a rib scratch. Now, in reverse order, it’s time to make the main meal of the day. Bill will again assist, this time with the peeled vegetables. Pushing away the peel and rolling the spuds, pumpkin and brussel sprouts onto the floor as soon as my attention is diverted to browning the meat and the onions. Strangely enough, Bill is nowhere to be seen when the onions are sliced and diced and the garlic is crushed. Rather, he subversively paws a piece of uncooked meat off the side of the frypan without burning himself and throws it up in the air until he is convinced it is “dead” and then consumes it.
Bill looks decidedly miffed as all the ingredients go into the slow cooker with some stock. Attempts to encourage him to taste test the stock are met with a look of disdain as if to say “how stupid do you think I am”. Rather than wait for the end result in the slow cooker, Bill goes directly to his feeding bowls at his feeding station and pushes the bowls around until you relent and give him some pet mince or processed food. As I look, with some pride at the cakes and enjoy the fine aroma wafting from the slow cooker, Bill is finally done. He’s stretched out on top of the couch oblivious to the mess I have made in the kitchen. Somehow I have got to teach him to scrub pans and load the dishwasher!

PASSIONFRUIT CHEESECAKE SLICE FAST & EASY TO MAKE – KID FRIENDLY RECIPE
Diana Wallace from Toorbul made this delicious Passionfruit Cheesecake to take to the opening of the new chemist last month. She was telling me how easy it was to make and I asked her for the recipe. This is her own adaptation of a popular recipe and I know how good it is. Thanks Diana for sharing with us. Now we can all try it. INGREDIENTS:
Base: • 1 cup of sweet biscuits • ½ cup of melted butter Filling: • 2 x 250g Cream Cheese (softened at room temp) • ¾ cup of castor sugar • ¾ cup of passionfruit pulp • ½ cup semi whipped cream • 1 ½ tablespoons of gelatine dissolved in ½ cup of hot water DIRECTIONS: 1. Combine biscuit crumbs and butter 2. Press into a 20cm spring-form pan and chill. 3. Beat the cream cheese until smooth, add sugar passionfruit pulp and gelatine mixture 4. Blend well 5. Fold in the cream and pour into prepared crust. 6. Chill and decorate with extra passionfruit I’m sure you could create your own flavour by using other fruits like Kiwi fruit, Strawberries, Peaches or maybe even Mango when they are in season.
YO-YO’S PERFECT FOR A FATHER’S DAY TREAT!
INGREDIENTS:
• ¾ cup butter • 1/3 cup icing sugar • ½ cup custard powder • 1 ½ cups plain flour • ½ teaspoon vanilla essence • Extra icing sugar to join Yo-Yo’s DIRECTIONS:
Cream butter and sugar (mix together until pale and creamy). Add dry ingredients and mix well. Roll pieces of mixture into balls, place on oven tray, lined with a sheet of baking paper, and flatten with a fork. Bake in a moderate oven, (180C), for 15-20 minutes. Join together with vanilla icing, or jam, to make Yo-Yo.

The sunshine emerged at just the right time for an entertaining finish to the 2016 italk Travel, Bribie Island Golf Club Ladies Championship. For the first time, popular Competitor and former Manager of the Club, Linda Urquhart, took out the Club Champion award with an A grade gross winning score of 330. Urquhart finished 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Vicki Jones in the 72-hole championship played over four days. In all, 36 golfers took part in the annual three division championship. The Club’s top eight players, now play in the Match Play Knockout Championship immediately after Club representatives compete in the Sunshine Coast and Burnett District Golf Title over three days, before the Match Play begins on Thursday. Urquhart told the Island and Surrounds she was both relieved and honoured to finally win the Club Champion title after 10 years as a player at the Club. “There’s a lot of good golfers here and I am very pleased and relieved to get my first Championship win... l’m stoked, very honoured,” Urquhart said. “I have been waiting 10 years for it! One year I qualified and won the Match Play Championship but it is even sweeter now I have actually won the Club Championship.” Urquhart started her golfing passion in Longreach during her school years on sand

B Grade Champion winner was taken out by Lauren McDonald with 396 gross from Margaret Huxley 417. C Grade was won by Ingrid Coburn with a gross score of 452 from Jenny Stafford on 442. A Grade player Vicki Jones went one better winning the over 60s Veteran’s Championship with a total score of 301, just one ahead of Sherryn Portley on 301. Other results were: A Grade Net was won by Sherryn Portley 301 in a close tussle with Kris Tomalin 302. B Grade Net winner was Mary Carruthers 312 from Marg McBride on 316 while the C Grade Net winner was Carol McAlister 312 from Shirley Barry 315. Club Captain, Robyn Cantrill, was very pleased with the 2016 Club Championship event. “The numbers are up from last year and I think the sponsorship has made this event,’’ she said.

As part of its commitment to Youth programs, the Rotary Club of Bribie Island is taking a two member debating team to Canberra to participate in the National Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA). The team from Bribie Island State High School (BISHS) - Dakoda Titmus Year 11 and Liam Baker Year 12 - will be accompanied by Rotarian, Anne Matthews from Bribie Rotary. This is the first time Bribie Rotary and District 9600 has been involved in MUNA. Dakoda, who participated in MUNA in 2015 as part of a Tasmanian team, approached Bribie Rotary earlier this year and asked that we consider sponsoring a team. The rest as they say is history. MUNA 2016 will take place from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st August 2016 at the Museum of Australian Democracy in Canberra. The event is sponsored by the Australian National University and involves
lively debates on real United Nations issues. Each team is allocated a country to represent - the Bribie Island team is representing Egypt. Students develop an awareness of the working of the United Nations and of the country that they are representing. They have an opportunity to practice and develop their public speaking and debating skills, and gain a better understanding of the international positions of other countries. The resolutions to be debated this year range from issues such as the “Protection of global climate for present and future generations of humankind”, and the “Coordination of Taxation Arrangements in a Globalizing World”, to the “Question of Organ Donation”, and the “International Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space”. The team leave for Canberra on Friday
morning and Anne has arranged for them to meet with Deputy Head of Mission and First Secretary Mr. Sherif Bedeir at Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the afternoon. Rotary Adventures in Citizenship (RAIC) is a program for Year 11 students (the delegates) who spend a week in Canberra to view Parliament in action, including the Budget speech and Question Time. Through role play, delegates participate in law-making debates and explore the functions of the Parliament. Rotary would also like to start an Interact Club at the school. Interact is a club for young people aged 12-18 who want to join together to tackle problems and develop leadership skills. SPEECH CONTEST TIME ON BRIBIE ISLAND Bribie Toastmasters conducted their speech contest on Tuesday the 16th of August with an enjoyable evening full of excellent speeches. Vicki Fullinfaw certainly enthralled the 20 members and guests with her Test Speech about a couple who were lost at sea for 117 days in a dingy, it was an excellent speech for the contestants of the evaluation contest, which was won by Noela Gray. The Table Topics contest involves the contestants being given a topic and without any time to rehearse, they must speak for 2 minutes. With the topic on the night being “All Care and No Responsibility” Rosine Evans won this event with her fun impromptu speech. The Humorous Speech contest requires the audience to be entertained for 5 to 7 minutes and this was certainly
the case! All attending laughed along to the stories from the contestants with Cathy McGillivray taking first place. The International Speech requires a 5 to 7 minute speech with a message for the audience to take away and consider. The winner of this contest has the ability to proceed through the World Championship in America. The speeches which covered topics from capital punishment, a life saving doctor from the 1800’s and how practice makes perfect. The International Speech was won by Cathy McGillivray. Congratulations to all the participants for giving everyone a wonderful night, and we wish all contest winners well as they proceed through to the Area contest to represent Bribie Toastmasters against other Toastmasters clubs.

The Importance of Career Pathways
By Bribie Island State High School students: Phoebe Diamond-Griffin, Madeline Scully & Alexis Thomas What do you want to be when you grow up? This is the question that floated around primary school classes as a filler when there were only five minutes left until the bell to keep students entertained. Answers were blurted out left, right and centre. A fairy! An astronaut! A dinosaur! A princess! At that phase in your life, it didn’t matter if your goals were unrealistic or only belonged in a fantasy book, for the time to come up with a serious answer was in the future. Fast forward only five years and you see secondary students with anxious and worried looks on their faces, as they look down at a piece of paper titled ‘Subject Selection: Year 10’. One mistaken choice could lead you down the wrong path and mess up your whole entire future… Well, at least that’s what the teachers tell you. At the tender age of fourteen, students are asked to choose subjects that could impact subject selections in further years, as well as being crucial in determining what University degrees and potentially what careers they are able to focus on in the future. Schools put pressure on their young students about these choices when it isn’t as life

destroying as they say it is. Sure, it will help the students that are certain about their future, but this isn’t the case for everyone, especially at fourteen. We are all different and some students may need a little more time to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Maybe they even want to expand their horizons and study several subjects before deciding which ones they are most passionate about. All in all, the rest of our lives do not come down to a flimsy sheet of paper filled out half way through grade 9. There are alternatives that students can turn to, instead of having the pressure to get the decision right the first time and stressing out over having to have chosen their life-time career at a young age. TAFE, night school, out of school tutoring and so many other options are available should you choose the wrong subjects in grade 9. Students need to take more time in deciding on what they want to do in the future then worrying about the supposed “necessity” of choosing subjects which will lead them to jump to a career path they will never feel content with. Yes, it’s the easiest and quickest path to success in one’s career, but it’s the stress and pressure put on our shoulders that we HAVE to make the right choices that burdens students, unnecessarily. What you want to be when you grow up requires careful thought. We need time to learn about and consider all the options. But the rush to get good grades – and the fact that our grades heavily influence what subjects we can and can’t choose – means that some students make hurried, expedient decisions, which may not be for the best in the long-term.

Before You Buy: What Do You Need in a Laptop? Before you buy a new laptop computer, you should decide on what you really need and then get a laptop that comes closest to your requirements. Laptops vary in terms of processor speed, screen size, battery life, and total weight. When choosing features, remember that there is no benefit to going to extremes for features that you will not use or that bring problems with them. Also keep in mind that whatever you buy today will immediately be outdated.
Ask yourself these questions:
• Is fast good enough or do I need super-duper turbocharged faster than fast? The latest and greatest microprocessors are marvellously zippy, but most laptop users may never tax them to the fullest; word processors and web browsers work just fine with a CPU a step or two below the fastest processors on the market. • Do I need a super-sized screen or will a more standard screen suffice? A big screen looks great and is easier to read, but the laptop will be larger, heavier, and a few hundred dollars more expensive. • How many hours of battery life do I really need? More power adds weight and cost. • Am I willing to pay a big premium to get less, or can I handle an extra pound in my traveling case? It allows you to express your feelings and opinions with millions of other people. It also allows you to post pictures and statuses on your personal blog, but the most unique and renowned thing about Tumblr is that it is predominantly a home to celebrate geeky and nerdy pop culture, allowing you to engulf yourself in your favourite hobbies. People are always posting and creating their favourite fan fictions (short stories that include characters from your favourite shows, movies or books), their art work and their theories for future shows, movies and books in a series. Tumblr works a little differently to other social media sites. Tumblr sees you create blogs. They can be about random things or dedicated to one particular thing, like: your favourite show or character or fashion trend. You can follow other people’s blogs and your blogs can be followed. To communicate, you can post comments in people’s chats or
by re-blogging and sharing your favourite posts with your followers. Tumblr is a craze that is likely to maintain its popularity. Being a place where people are like minded and share their passions of nerdy and geeky trends with other nerdy and geeky people, it will be a doorway to acceptance of differences. In fact, Tumblr is a community of people brought together by their love of difference. They have found a way to share their uniqueness and show people their ideas and thoughts, while simultaneously allowing people to work together to develop, or extend upon, more exciting thoughts and ideas. Bribie Island Community Arts Centre Potters, sculptors, ceramicists etc, get creating! The new Seasoned outdoor gallery at the BICAC is opening in October and it needs your art and heart. It will be a first for the region – set up in what has been the Arts Centre’s fairy courtyard. Think garden art, quirky, functional, fantasy and fun – and importantly make it robust so it will “season’’ in the outdoors. The brainchild of Gallery curator DayAnanda, the new gallery will open with a Spring collection that will have visitors and locals talking about and shopping for garden whimsy only artists can imagine and produce. “We are asking artists to put their thinking caps on and channel etc etc”, Day says. The ‘Seasoned’ art will change with the seasons, every three months. “We want to bring something different to our visitors.” Says Day. The quirky offerings that are currently in the courtyard have delighted visitors to the Arts Centre for many years but they have never been for sale although many people have asked to buy them. “The courtyard is being revamped and the art works will be fresh and new but still just as quirky! We plan to open the Spring Collection in October.” Says Day.

Cr Peter Flannery Writes In honour of National Tree Day, I held a tree giveaway event at Clayton Park, Beachmere. It was great to see this community come together and I gave away almost 100 trees. It was also an opportunity to officially open our new stage that was recently installed in the park. The Beachmere State School Choir entertained the crowd by performing some great songs and I thank them for their attendance. Some good news is that a new electric BBQ will soon be going into Clayton Park as well to enhance what is already a beautiful community recreation area. New signage has been installed recently at Beachmere Conservation Park to acknowledge that the park is also known as HE Corbould Park. The new signage also acknowledges the contribution that Harold Edward (Ted) Corbould made to conservation in south-east Queensland through the donation of twenty properties to the state. Has Sprung! By Mick O’Brien Dip.Hort.(MAIH) Happy September everybody, Well Spring is here and Christmas is on the horizon again. Time to get busy in the garden and clear out any weeds, prune back the Poinsettia and remove any dead or diseased growth on Citrus in preparation for the warmer months ahead. Our winter that was, with those several unnaturally warm days of 26- 28 degrees has contributed to a spurt of growth on some plants, unfortunately they were then hit with a second blast of cold wind, “the return to normal winter,” as nature wanted to just re-affirm, that the cold has not passed during August, on the Coast here on Bribie Island and surrounds. There is no better time to talk about a product on the market called Floraguard or another brand called Envy. It is a white coloured liquid polymer that you dilute with water and add to your spraying apparatus. What it does is when applied generously all over the leaf surface area, it dries to form an invisible micro thin elastic membrane which forms a seal over the Stomata, “the microscopic pores underneath the leaf surface which allow the plant to breathe and assist in transpiration”. What it is used for? It is to slow the plants transpiration, resulting in less moisture loss on hot windy days. It is very
useful when planting sensitive subtropical foilage plants to your landscape. The product was designed mainly for ornamental plants but can be sprayed on the non edible parts of new fruit trees like citrus, for that extra protection. You will still need to irrigate the plant root zone of course as normal, but the protective shield gives your plants a real head start after planting. I have used this product many times over the years when planting my own tropical plants with great success in the summer months, to which my plants have stood proud during those times of extreme environmental stresses. There is nothing worse than putting in new plants in a landscape fresh from a nursery in spring and summer to have some unseasonal extreme weather patterns to dry your plants to a cinder. So if you are contemplating putting some new plants in the ground this spring, remember this product, also I use water crystals sparingly in the soil root zone when planting my ornamental shrubs and trees in sandy soils, as these both products are biodegradable in time and do not damage the soil micro flora, so may your successes be many and your imprint small. Don’t forget to Slip, slop & slap!

LAWNS IN SPRING With the night time temperatures increasing as the weather takes a significant turn towards Spring our lawns which have grown very little over the last few months are in need of some tender love and care to set them up for hot weather to come. Over the winter months’ lawn usually will have become somewhat less green and now is the perfect time to feed your lawn. As it is for your garden the choice of lawn fertilizer can be mind boggling, but weather you choose to opt for an organic fertilizer such as a chicken manure pellet or an inorganic fertilizer it is important to ensure that you follow the application rates and application instructions provided on the bag by the manufacturer to avoid damaging your lawn. Now too is when you will start to notice weeds in your lawn in particular Bindii and Clover, there are plenty of treatment options available from you garden retailer, either as concentrates or ready to use products. However, like fertilizers it is important to follow application instructions as each product will differ one from the next, it is also important to remember that these products are not something to be applied once and never again. Water is also essential to producing a lush covering of lawn and due to our coastal soils being so sandy and having an extremely poor capacity to ‘hold’ water regular irrigation is essential. There are specialised wetting agents available from your local garden retailer designed to boost the ability of soils to retain moisture and to improve water penetration in soils that have become extremely dry and hydrophobic. These products applied as per the manufacturer’s instructions may reduce the amount of irrigation required.
Soils ain’t Soils Part 1. To elaborate a bit more on the actual dynamics of improving soil health and to give a better understanding of how a healthy soil can “actually”, contribute to better plant health for lawns, fruit trees, vegetables and landscape ornamental plants.
Firstly a healthy soil is loaded with micro flora, bacteria and beneficial fungi and all these are abundantly available in compost. Interestingly, like the animal kingdom, when we humans consume food it is broken down and assimilated into our system via the gut, therefore the healthier nutritious foods we eat, the better chance of absorbing the necessary vitamins and minerals for us to function optimally, this is also regulated by acidity and our internal chemistry just like the soil food web. Soil micro organisms are readily available because atmospheric conditions are ideal in compost, because it has been broken down and assimilated with bacteria and various strands of fungi, which thrive with just the right amount of moisture and oxygen to allow soil life to replicate and flourish. When we add this “magic breath of life” compost, to our own impoverished soils like our sandy soils on Bribie Island, the humble earth worms further decompose the organic matter to create humus, the worms also oxygenate the soil and incubate new soil life while providing nutrient dense castings which will be utilised by plant roots as natural plant available minerals are then translocated from the soil.

Sometimes on my travels around the coastal parts of Southeast Qld I find a plant in flower that has put up with what seems intolerable weather increments and stands firm unfazed by excess heat, rain, salt or wind and “Little Dugald” is one of those specimens and hence is my “Landscape Plant of the Month”. Metrosideros collina- “Little Dugald” is a cultivar which was crossed from M. Collina “Spring Fire” and M. We need to continue a program of organic principles with the intention of attracting as many earth worms to your patch as possible. On the other side of the fence, the more chemical fertilisers and fungicides added to our soils can contribute to reduced earth worm activity and hence reduced fertility. If your soil needs replenishing due to over cultivation or excess fertiliser use, do not despair, its never too late to re-establish and inoculate your soil with worm tea brews and by adding humates, “humic acid” and fulvic acids, which are available from reputable garden centre or nurseries, these correctly applied and combined with good friable compost assist to rebirth the soil by working with nature again. I found “Little Dugald” flowering in the beginning of August after the really cold southerly winds on a sand bank in a well mulched garden bed, growing among Pandanus species, and is a real testament to the plants vitality and stamina indeed. If you are looking to fill that gap in a garden bed in an exposed full sun position then consider this little beauty. It is widely available from most nurseries as its been around for a couple of years now. Its also perfect in mass plantings or hedges for that formal look.

BRIBIE ISLAND VIEW CLUB CELEBRATING 20 YEARS The Bribie Island VIEW Club began with an enthusiastic group of ladies 20 years ago, who thought they could make a difference to disadvantaged children, while at the same time making new friends and having fun. The Club proved to be a great success, and since May 1996 has raised over $100,000 for The Smith Family. VIEW (which stands for Voice, Interest and Entertainment for Women) is an Australia-wide organisation, set up to support the Smith Family. The philosophy of the Smith Family is giving disadvantaged kids a hand up, rather than a hand out. There are over 600,000 financially disadvantaged children living in Australia, some of these children being third generation welfare recipients. The Smith Family wants to help as many of these children as possible through their Learning for Life programme. Their aim is to break the poverty cycle, educate children to the best of their ability and allow them to have a greater chance in life than they might have otherwise had. Currently over 34,000 children are supported by the LFL programme. Children can be sponsored by Clubs or individuals, the cost varying depending on their educational level. Our Club currently sponsors four students, one Primary, two Secondary and one Tertiary. We receive updates from these children, and it has been interesting to watch
their progress over the years we have been their Sponsor. Apart from the annual contribution, we also send gift vouchers for Christmas and their birthdays. In addition to the sponsored children, 125,000 children had been helped by TSF through mentoring and literacy programmes. VIEW club funds also help to provide funding for these programmes. It is worth having a look at the Smith Family website - thesmithfamily.com .au – to have a look at the many and varied ways in which they are trying to build a better future for disadvantaged kids. It also provides information on the cost of sponsoring a child. Bribie VIEW Club meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month for lunch at Kai Café, Welsby Parade. We have a guest speaker each month, talking on many and varied subjects of interest to our members. Other functions are held between these luncheon dates, such as movie mornings, casual coffee mornings and lunches, and in October there will be a Fashion Parade. Fund raising is strictly ‘in-house’, through a $1 levy on each lunch, raffles, and the occasional bring and buy table. FISHERIES at Woorim - Dispelling the Myth PART 1 - Written by Terry Fogarty, Photographed by Deb Neill
Peter Lee, Principal Scientist, Fisheries & Aquaculture, Animal Science The local community has been very interested in the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Bribie Island Research Centre (BIRC) at Woorim for many years but little is known of exactly what they do. In 1998, for the first time, DAF opened their doors to the general public. To their amazement over 10,000 people visited the facility. They have never opened their doors to the public en masse again! So what do they do? The simple answer is they do aquaculture and fisheries research that helps support and grow Queensland’s sustainable and profitable aquaculture and fisheries industries. The more complicated and interesting answer can be found in the following paragraphs. The research facility was conceived in the mid 80’s when the Prawn and Barramundi farming industries were just starting to flourish and the Department recognised the need to have a dedicated aquaculture research facility. Bribie Island was chosen as the location because the site offered access to pristine oceanic waters and they were able to obtain sixteen hectares of land. The site officially opened in 1991. Since that time, research has not been limited to just Prawns and Barramundi but has encompassed Snapper, Flathead, Bream, Mud crabs, Moreton Bay Bugs and various other species of prawns. The facility has now come a full circle and are back concentrating their efforts on the Prawn and Barramundi industry. In Queensland 90% of the aquaculture value and production is in Prawns and Barramundi. In 2007 DAF researchers, together with the

prawn industry, commenced a research project into Cobia to see if they might offer diversification option for prawn farmers. When marine Finfish first hatch they are quite underdeveloped, making it necessary for the research centre to grow food for them. In their
Cobia Feeding natural habitat the Finfish would feed on small microscopic animals called zooplankton. When the Cobia larvae hatch they are only about four millimeters in size. When I asked Peter Lee why they chose Cobia for this project he said “Cobia is one of the species we have been targeting for research over the past seven or eight
years. The real interest in Cobia, as an aquaculture species, is that they grow very, very fast. They will reach 5 kilos within twelve months and can be harvested. They taste beautiful, really beautiful! These ponds however, fade in comparison to the prawn ponds which are about a hectare in size. “Our ponds are a really good model, they are basically a scaled down version of the sea so we can do replicated experiments in these ponds. We can do work that is much larger than you can in tanks. We can work at a more commercial scale.” Pacific Reef Fisheries have won awards with their Cobia in National Seafood and Primary Produce Competitions. cell of this algae is about 1000th of a millimeter across, hence there are a million cells per millilitre of water and that is just the first stage. As the algae ages its growth starts to slow down. The researcher is then required to place
spawning them in November and run that right through until March or April.” Cobia are able to start breeding from their first summer when they have reached five plus kilos. DAF researchers tend to delay breeding until

The zooplankton species is called a rotifer and is the Cobia’s first source of food. “They are really easy to grow and can be grown at high density. They are relatively easy to look after, you feed them on yeast or a mixture of yeast and algae which is what we do and they are very tolerant.” The seasons, water temperature and day length are all contributing factors in the assistance of fish reproduction and spawning. “What we do with these systems is because this is a recirculated system we can control the water temperature and we bring the temperature up from about August/ September and we will have them at peak summer conditions around October/November so we can start
their second summer when they are about ten kilos. “We will breed from them for two or three years until they get too big. At about thirty five kilos they become too big to handle and in the summer they can eat 10% of their weight in a day. We feed them a mix of fresh pilchards, squid and prawns, so you can appreciate a thirty five kilo animal can be expensive to maintain. They’re worse than teenagers!” The largest Cobia on record is sixty five kilos and two metres long. “Initially the research was all about controlling the reproduction because of the unique nature of what we are doing, trying to fit Cobia farming into a prawn production system. Because prawns are the farmers key business we needed to be able to fit the fish into their timeframes so we had to have enough control over the reproduction
of the adults to say okay we will spawn them on this day and we know that they will spawn which means in forty days we can send them up to the farm. The farmers needed to know that we had that control.” In the beginning, the research team did not have great control over reproduction. Bringing the fish to a spawning condition required a great deal of work on managing their environment. “That was quite a lot of work to get to that point. We also did investigations of how the farms could manage the fish. We work quite closely with our commercial partners to specifically address any issues.” Diversification in agriculture production is of vital importance as it provides alternative options should there be market or health issues with current stock. The prawn industry is
interested in broadening into other areas of production. “It has taken a significant commitment from the farms. Growing Cobia is quite different to growing Prawns so it’s not for every farm. The farmers have to commit some of their pond space and some of their staff just to grow Cobia.” The research project is funded by various agencies within Australia. Recently they have been funded by the Fisheries Development and Research Corporation. The project is still about doing the underlying research to support and grow the Cobia industry. In our September/October issue we will continue to bring you more information on a number of projects being undertaken by Fisheries at Woorim.
