Dear Harvey Fewings,

While our own people are struggling and being over taxed.

Have you forgotten the abolition of slavery and child labor in England? Would you prefer that women were not allowed to vote? What about a more modern cause- justice for victims of sexual abuse?

As an eighty-year-old political activist I just had to respond to your article ‘The odd little lives of the political activists’ (4 July 2018).

It is time to look after our own people (Pensioners, disabled and Poor). It is not about building more schools but about real Education (not poorly trained teachers, and non-essential subject matter).

I don’t think I’m odd and, although small in stature, my life is definitely not little.

the continual bickering between the various parties.

I’m proud that I protested against Whitlam and Fraser when Indonesia invaded East Timor and we turned a blind eye to the murder of five Aussie journalists and countless Timorese. I’m glad I walked with thousands to protest about Australia’s role in Vietnam. Support for Aboriginal land rights is another example of my oddness and littleness. These days I write letters to politicians about the cruelty being used on asylum seekers who tried to find a safe place to live. It is wrong to use cruelty to some as as a deterrent to others. If I remain silent I contribute to this injustice.

Let us see real RESULTS and not personality clashes RESULTS not WAFFLE.

I tell my grandchildren about all this and encourage them to think for themselves.

Farley Bribie Island

Here are some of my heroes: Mahatma Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai, Nelson Mandela, Julian Burnside, Faith Bandler, Rosie Batty and recently even Twiggy Forrest. All activists.

Creating more apprenticeships and new Industries. Solar, high tech use of coal (make it clean to burn), new Robotic Industries, High speed rail, placement of new dams, building all new houses to have Solar.

This is a wonderful example of communication with two people in discussion about a controversial topic. The Editor believes these discussions are important and it’s about respect to each other when discussing these issue.

We have the assets and resources to make Australia a World Leader, but we waste money with donations to Countries that should be helping themselves.

2018 - Issue 27 islandandsurrounds.com.au

I’m in good company. Rosie McKenry, Bongaree, Bribie Island Dear Rosemary, Thank You for your comments regarding my article on the life of Activists. A fundamental principle of our democracy is the right of citizens to publicly express their own views on matters which concern them, regarding the manner in which we conduct our societies. In my opinion, publicly expressing your views regarding any political issue by way of street marches and demonstrations is a part of our democratic life : and is a sign of a vigorous and healthy democracy. The destruction of public property, private property and the deliberate disruption of commerce, agriculture and industry is not. Once again in my view. I note that many of those people you refer to as ‘ your heroes’ , also feature in my list of impressive humans who have added greatly to the life of their fellow humans – except for Julian Burnside – I reckon his contribution is minimal and cynical. I notice you mention your pride in your Vietnam demonstrations, and how you will speak of these matters to your grandchildren. In 1969, I was a twenty three year old combat soldier in Vietnam – I was a Second Lieutenant. We watched, with increasing disgust, as a violent tide of our fellow citizens filled the streets of our major cities, trashing our National monuments, attacking Police horses with barb wire wrapped around broom sticks, giving comfort to the Communist Officials who sent their young men against us, and encouraging the Postal Workers Union to destroy mail from soldiers in Vietnam to

3

Community their families back home in Australia. We considered particularlyOF cowardly. THEthat POETRY LIFE In the end we had far more respect for the young Communist soldiers we were fighting, than the cruel bastards who attacked Police Horse bellies. Years have passed, but as Australian Combat Soldiers we shall never forget and very few of us will ever forgive. Please make sure you tell that to your GrandChildren; I am sure you would want them to hear both sides of the story. Regards, Harvey Fewings. Dear Harvey, It seems you and I agree on most things. I, too, disagree strongly with damage to property and to other people. Yes, it must have been horrible to be fighting in Vietnam knowing so many Australians were demonstrating against Australia’s involvement. I joined the Moratorium in Melbourne and did not see any of the shameful acts you describe in your letter. The reason I took part was because I didn’t think it right for our government to send our young men and women into that war - and, also to other wars since.

4 It’s a long way from the West Midlands of England to Maleny in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast, Queensland where Dr Sean Keogh, Emergency Director at Caboolture Hospital is designing a new Emergency Department (ED) along with a new family home and farm in Maleny to raise his family and run a few head of cattle in his spare time. I had the pleasure of meeting Sean Keogh at the Caboolture Hospital to learn about his

Facility for the community. If you look at the rate of development in our region, it is likely we will see a lot more families and children in the future, as well as rising numbers of the elderly.” Nerys Brackman, Clinical Nurse Manager of the Caboolture ED said, “We are very fortunate to have such an expert group of Doctors and Nurses at Caboolture. Although we are well versed in managing our busy Emergency Department, we are excited about the next chapter with development of a new patient-friendly department. It has been very rewarding being involved with Dr Keogh in the planning for the new design.” Prior to taking up the Position at the Caboolture Hospital, Sean was working as Senior Consultant and Director for Care Flight based in Brisbane and as a Deputy Director of Medical Services at Redcliffe Hospital. The Caboolture Development is clearly a very exciting project for Sean and his

From left – Dr Keogh, Dr Danielle Spratt and Dr Miron Kazi life and ambitions for a smarter workplace, healthier community and a larger and more efficient emergency department. On my arrival at the Caboolture Hospital and prior to meeting Sean, I was taken on a short tour of the Caboolture Hospital by the Hospital’s Senior Communications Advisor. As we concluded our tour of the Clinical Educational Facility, the security doors clicked opened and in walked Sean Keogh dressed in his Emergency Department Uniform, wearing a sleeveless black winter jacket, ID Badge and all-purpose black work shoes. We walked together along a corridor into a clinical meeting room. For some unknown reason, I thought if I take my time to remove my jacket, find a pen, fetch my notes, blow my nose, prepare my first question and set the tape recorder – the tea trolley might arrive stacked with warm scones and cream accompanied by a piping hot latte – Okay, that did not happen. This is a story of how an 18-year-old-man made the decision to have a go at life – to harness his knowledge and life experience and educate himself to become one of the world’s leading Emergency Doctors. Sean Keogh was born and raised in Birmingham until he was 11 years old, when his family moved to Tamworth, a large market town in Staffordshire, England, 23 kilometres away. Sean comes from a single parent family - he and his two sisters were raised by his mother, who cleaned houses by day and worked as a barmaid in the evenings, and money was always very short. Sean recalls his schooling days when his mum fought to have Sean enrolled into a state Grammar School, despite the school being located outside of their geographical catchment area. Sean said, “When I was 11, my mother would march me to the new school and back home, a round trip of about 8km, every school day for 4 months, to get me accepted into Grammar School. Eventually, the school just gave up and agreed to take me in - that was that, he said. “I think that this opportunity contributed to my success, but overwhelmingly I think that my mother’s determination to see me succeed was the key.” In 1982, after Sean Keogh completed school, he made the decision to pack his bags and head to Medical School to complete his Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery at St Georges Hospital, at the University of London. It was not without judgement or doubt by some of his friends – as Sean says, “When you come from a poor family living in a very rough council estate like ours, expectations are not always that high.” Since his graduation in 1987, Sean Keogh has not looked back. Thankfully Sean offered

Nerys Brackman (Nurse Unit Manager & Dr Keogh) up his resume which put my interview into perspective. It would be fair to say from reviewing Sean’s resume that his approach to education and desire to travel the world has been relentless. In the past 30 years, Sean has actively worked in Emergency Medicine and disaster relief across the UK, South Africa, North Korea, Afghanistan, Iran, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Montserrat, Nepal, Burma, Haiti, the Philippines, New Zealand and Australia. During that time, he has racked the necessary qualifications including being made a Fellow of the UK Royal Colleges of Physicians, Surgeons, Emergency Medicine, Immediate Medical Care and a Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators. He also now holds a position as adjunct Professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Such is the drive of Sean Keogh that he completed a Masters in Business

Swaps his Stethoscope for a Chainsaw on Maleny Farm Administration (MBA) at London Business School at the same time as he was working as an Emergency Medicine Consultant in the UK and secured his FAA Commercial Pilots Licence and PADI Rescue Diver qualifications to put the butter icing on the doctor’s cake. Sean’s resume is rounded out with his 10 published research articles, one of which originated from his work as an Emergency Doctor with the London Air Ambulance, where Sean pioneered and performed the world’s first successful pre-hospital thoracotomy for trauma – surgically opening

the chest of a clinically dead stabbing victim and repairing a knife wound to his heart while he was still lying on a London pavement where he fell – with the patient leaving hospital 2 weeks later with normal brain function. With all that said, Sean Keogh is firstly a loving husband, dad and mentor for his kids. His focus on work-life balance and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is critical to his weekly program. Sean said, “I have always had a passion for Japanese Martial Art, going back to my school days and these days one of my sons and I train at Yoshinkan Aikido classes in Caloundra several times week. I have many other passions including flying, skydiving, snowboarding and travel and very soon I should have a herd of cattle wandering the paddock in Maleny. My wife is Slovak and family life is very traditional, I do everything to do with repairs, maintenance and outdoors and my wife deals with the management of our home – that’s the way she likes it! Each day is a new challenge and of course I love good food and never pass up on a glass of wine in moderation.” So after all these years, why did Sean Keogh ‘set up his life’ in Maleny and devote his professional future to the Caboolture Hospital? Sean said, “I have worked and lived all over the world, including setting up air medical services in places as exotic as the Bahamas, but Maleny is the most beautiful place I have ever lived. When we settled on living in Maleny and raising our kids in that environment, I did not want to be wasting precious family time commuting to work in major city centres, he said.” “In terms of my workplace, the Caboolture Hospital team is unique - a very special family of professionals. I knew that the Caboolture Staff were a dedicated and busy team – Caboolture ED is a very tough environment as you can imagine - and that is what I enjoy. At the same time, my role as an Administrator and Clinician has allowed me to lead the Design Team for the expansion and new build for Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department which I think will be a benchmark facility within Australia both for design and the safety and efficiency with which we care for patients, and Metro North Hospital and Health Service, which oversees the Caboolture Hospital has been extremely supportive in allowing our team to establish the new design. Currently we are seeing about 55,000 emergency patients per year within an incredibly small Emergency Department. It is forecast by 2026 that we will be seeing more than 115,000 patients, which is one of the reasons we are designing a state-of-the-art Emergency

Dr Keogh in one of the resuscitation emergency rooms team. As we toured through the Emergency Department, Sean showed me the design for the new facility which is fixed to the wall in his office. It is rewarding and inspiring to meet a man like Dr Sean Keogh - an innovative, articulate, considered, energised, and passionate human being who is devoting a life to caring for all people equally whether they suffer an addiction, fall off a ladder or require critical life-saving intervention – we are in good hands at the Caboolture Hospital. Thank you to the Metro North Hospital and Health Service Senior Communications Advisor, Stephen Hapgood for facilitating the interview with Dr Keogh.

Q&A

-

What motivated you to become a Doctor?. I was fortunate enough to do well at school and I loved Biology and Chemistry – medicine seemed a logical choice and I don’t think that there is anything more rewarding than helping people. It also seemed a good way to move away from the Midlands and study and perhaps meet some meet girls and maybe have some fun - please remember, I was only 18. I started working in General Medicine, completed my postgraduate Physicians and then Surgeons exams and ended up working in Emergency Medicine. I have been lucky enough to have worked in disaster zones and helicopter air ambulances across the world. It’s not just saving lives, which of course does happen – it’s also about the interactions with people from all different backgrounds and cultures that is just as rewarding. How do you compare the UK and Australian Emergency Medicine Models? They are very similar, however in Australia we probably do more clinical interventions for a patient in the ED before a patient is referred to other specialties or ICU. How will the new Caboolture Hospital ED be any different to others around the world? I have had the privilege of working in

many emergency facilities. Some in third world countries where you have very little equipment and others in major cities like London or places like Soweto, in Johannesburg. The challenge is to develop a facility absolutely focused on high quality care, safety and efficiency – as well as being a fun and enjoyable place to work – my nurse managers and I recently travelled to the United States to have a good look at benchmark facilities providing unique designs for smooth patient flow while supporting the need for efficient patient treatment and triage. There is a standard way to design an ED in Australia and that is not the route we are taking. Our new build will be 5 times larger than at present and so it is incredibly important to maintain the fabulous communication we currently have within our tiny department, and our new ED is a non-standard design based around flexibility, visibility and patient flow. What do you see as the challenges in the Caboolture region? Caboolture is a fantastic community, though areas have a relatively low socioeconomic demographic and like other similar demographics, the Caboolture ED responds to large proportion of complex cases that often present late in the course of the illness. This also applies to children and we see many very sick kids. Drugs like ICE and new synthetic drugs are of significant concern in our region – ICE is incredibly addictive and destructive to our bodies and ICE use is by no means limited to the lower socio-economic population. We see many ICE users who are professional people presenting to our ED. It’s disturbing for our clinicians and security teams because we frequently have to manage the severe behavioural consequences of drug use and departmental disturbances related to these cases – it is challenging because we see the end result of people’s lifestyle choices and, often, these results are not good. What makes your ED Team so special? I have been at the Caboolture Hospital for 18 months and the team are outstanding and work very hard – there is never a let up – and I would consider this as one of the toughest ED’s to work in state-wide. The first thing you notice when you work at Caboolture is that you can’t put your feet up – the work just doesn’t stop. Like most ED teams, we have several important layers of professionals including Medical Staff, Nursing Teams, Administration staff, Allied Health and Security. The benefit of the current Caboolture ED is that we see a lot of patients in a very small space, working physically closely to one another, which promotes stronger relationships and more active communications. Our staff certainly don’t come to work at Caboolture because it’s in a nice shiny building. People come to work because they like nursing or they like being a Doctor or supporting front line staff - they want to help people.

Ernest Shackleton the Antarctic explorer – my kind of leader Kim Jong-un - Leader of North Korea – if only to ask him how he lives with himself after seeing the poverty and misery in North Korea first-hand when I was working there I would probably cook a favourite Asian style meal with a glass of French Sancerre or a nice Australian red. Where do you choose to holiday? I have been very fortunate to travel the world and interact with many cultures. - If my holiday was about meeting people – it would be Afghanistan – I worked there in 1997 during the Rustaq Earthquake – these are the most welcoming people in the world. You hear so many stories about people taking you in and if necessary protecting you – I experienced this first hand. - If my holiday were for scenery – it would be California – Yosemite National Park is simply amazing. - If my holiday were for interest - it would be snowboarding in Japan.

What Does your work week look like? Firstly, because I have a reasonably large administrative workload, I make sure that I roster myself onto the busiest clinical days and nights – especially Sundays and Mondays. On these days I start at midday and go overnight. On my Administrative Days I will start at about 7.15am and finish at about 6pm. If you were to invite anyone over for dinner at your home – who would it be?

What Health Message do you have for our community? As a population we are in dangerous times with the way we treat our bodies. At the end of the day, if you don’t look after yourself, you will end up a higher health care user than you need to be. Stop and reflect before you make choices – everyone knows that drugs or huge amounts of sugar is bad for you without me saying it - I think it is critical to lead by example because your children will often do what you do. Take reasonable care of yourself without becoming paragons of virtue – that’s all that doctors would ask. We are happier when the population is healthier.

How do you maintain an educational environment? Education is part of every doctor’s job. The first thing you learn in Emergency Medicine is that you can’t learn the profession from a text book. We run programs where we interact with each other to grow our knowledge. In emergency medicine, you work as a team, discuss cases and frequently learn from each other. Caboolture provides a great learning environment and is a very popular with junior doctors once they have got over the shock of how busy ED can be here.

Cr Peter Flannery Writes

Granny Flat Rating Changes

“I was pleased during the recent budget discussions that Council agreed that Moreton Bay families living in a single household with a granny flat will no longer be rated as a multi-residential dwelling. New rating policies for the 2018/19 financial year will see households with a smaller, secondary granny flat-style building move from a multi-residential category to a residential category. This means that a family that has a house with a small granny flat that

isn’t metered differently, has the same driveway access as the main house, and is designed in a way that complements the primary dwelling, will be rated as a single residence.

I have been pushing for this change for some time now, and I’m glad Council has amended its rating categories to ensure they are fairer for our community.

The changes to the rating categories will be reflected in the first rating period for 2018/19. “

Loving your Senior Dog

Sammie needs glasses. Our vet noticed that Sammie’s eyesight is deteriorating and while dogs generally have poorer eyesight than humans in light, they have the ability to see better at night. Now we turn a light on for Sammie to use the stairs at night or he won’t use them.

By Jen Gallagher

3. Older dogs’ hearing may deteriorate too. You can use hand signals to communicate with your animal friend. 4. Give them space. We have two younger rescue greyhounds and sometimes they can get a little boisterous for Sammie. Sammie has his own “quiet space” to go when he needs to be in his own space. There is something special about older animal companions, their beautiful grey faces and their wise eyes. It is a privilege to be part of their life. It is considered that for a smaller dog at 8 or 9 years of age is an aging dog and for giant breeds 6 or 7 years of age. Have you ever considered adopting a senior dog as a companion? There are many dogs at many rescues just waiting to spend their senior years to give and get love and affection. Senior dogs nearly always know most commands, are way past puppy stage (think chewing!!) and are more relaxed and chilled. Most senior dogs have a story. This is our senior dog story. Our rescue greyhound, Sammie came into our lives at 10 years old. He had spent many months at the kennels, after being returned at 9 years of age. He was not wanted, as he was considered too old. He spent his 10th birthday at the kennels. We weren’t looking for an older dog, but after hearing his story, we decided he would be a great companion for us and our other greyhound. When he first came home, we thought that he was in pain with arthritis as he couldn’t go up the stairs. My husband built him a ramp and after a thorough

Kokoda is not just a war zone R McKenry

To many Australians, the word ‘Kokoda’ is an important part of the WW 2 story. Each year thousands walk the famous Kokoda Trail. However, Ko-koda is not just a battle site. It is home to the descendants of the so-called fuzzy-wuzzy angels.

check with the vet, his joints were quite good and not stopping him from using the stairs. We realized that Sammie had never used stairs before! We taught him how to use stairs and he is happy to come in and out of the house. A side note - I am a dog lover and advocate – I am not a vet, so please see a qualified animal health practitioner if you have any health concerns with your animal friend. Animals usually don’t cry out with pain unless it is very severe. In older dogs, changes can occur very slowly and while you may not notice a difference from one day/week to the next, they can be sorer and stiffer over a period of months. According to “The Healing Vet” Edward Bassingthwaighte it is not normal for your old dog to be stiff and slow. Don’t wait; see how a vet or animal naturopath can help your senior dog, so their senior years are comfortable and free. Sammie wouldn’t come to us for a pat or cuddle when he first arrived and for the first six months he was with us. He was very wary. We only knew a little of his history. I told him often that he would live his senior years with us. After 6 months, one morning, he was standing by my bed, waiting. He came to me for a pat and didn’t walk away. Since then, he has come for many pats!

No explosion. What relief! But the boys were very disappointed. I don’t know if that mortar bomb was Australian or Japanese. Ham writes, One saving grace was the failure of Japanese mortars; of 35 two-inch shells fired during one 15 minute bombardment only two exploded, the men calculated. The final climb to Isawara was the steepest.

6. Keep them warm in winter (there are some cute dog coats around!) and cool in summer. 7. Give an appropriate senior dog diet with plenty of variety. Imagine if you had to eat the same thing day in and day out for 10 or more years?! Many dogs love fruit and vegetables. Sammie loves sweet potato mixed with his food, and sardines as a treat!

9. Give them plenty of love and hugs and quiet time if needed.

1. When you adopt a senior dog, there is a good chance you won’t know their history. Go slowly with new experiences and see what they like and don’t like. 2. Get your dog’s eyes checked.

10 .Be aware of the bedding they are using. As dogs get older, they need greater support. Check out some of the ortho beds for dogs. Most of all, enjoy this special time with your dog. They can lead happy and healthy senior years and give as much affection and companionship. evening as we sat around a fire, people brought enamel dishes of cooked vegetables—taro, sweet potato, cooked bananas and pumpkin tops. A feast. Afterwards I listened to harmonious hymn singing. The fire was reflected on the peaceful faces around me. Time to sleep. The fire was extinguished. It was freezing. Even with the blankets I shivered.

Eight hours trekking the slippery track that often crossed rapidly flowing creeks wasn’t easy. Moss-covered stones or narrow logs were a challenge, but the boys held my hands.

After holding it above his head dramatically for a few moments, the boy hurled it into a raging waterfall.

5. Look after their teeth. Dogs need their teeth brushed too! Ask your vet to do a dental check with your animal.

8. Take your old friend for their daily walk. Sammie still loves his walks. Keep to a routine so that you both get out and enjoy some time being active. The walks may be a little slower or shorter as time goes by, but if they are excited by their lead, enjoy the time.

One day I decided to accept an invitation from them to walk south as far as Isawara. This trek was so familiar that they could pinpoint where arte-facts left over from the war were hidden in the bush.

‘Let’s burn it!’ they all cried. I was horrified.

In the Sixties I lived in Kokoda with my three young sons and first hus-band. We taught at Kokoda Primary T School.

From a dog lover’s perspective, here are my top 10 tips for loving your old animal friends, and as a reminder, if you have any concerns, see your qualified animal practitioner:

Biage children from along the Trail came down for school, staying at a mission during the week.

One found an old mortar bomb in the bush.

Sammie will be 13 years old next month and is happier and healthier than ever. He is special dog, giving love…and getting love! Older dogs can be a great teacher for us too.

Nobody could wish for better escorts. Isurava is where a famous battle took place in 1942. Paul Ham, in his book Kokoda, writes About 6000 Japanese combat troops confronted some 1800 Australians of whom 600 were untrained militia (the 39th and 53rd) and 1200 were AIF (the two battalions there were half-strength or less). At the height of the battle, 28-30 August, there were perhaps three or four Japanese to one Australian. Isawara was deserted. Everyone was away working on their gardens. We waited until they returned. The boys asked about accommodation but no empty house was available. However, one couple were willing to vacate their house and sleep next door. They swept it for us and in we went. There was a box of blankets belonging to the Agricultural Department and these were given to lucky me. That

After we finished our breakfast, we continued on to Alola. During WW2 it had been a resting place for wounded men on stretchers. I was enchant-ed by the panoramic view of the gap in the mountains. When we heard the sound of a helicopter below we ran to the edge of the village and waved. Back to Isawara, then down towards home. We met 30 cadets from an Australian college. ‘Civilization!’ someone cried. ‘How far to Isawara?’ A teacher had hurt his ankle. He asked me to take a message to be radi-oed from Kokoda, asking for a helicopter to be ready with a doctor further down the Trail. My family met us just up from Kokoda station. The ride home in the Toyota was welcome. Now, in 2018, those boys are middleaged, as are my sons. In my next col-umn I will tell you more about Kokoda today.

Turnbull Government Delivers $20 Million for Bribie Island Road Upgrade and Ms Wilson MP for Pumicestone is ecstatic! Simone Wilson MP, Member for Pumicestone, hailed last month’s announcement by the Federal Government of a guaranteed $20 million for upgrades to Bribie Island Road as a game changer for local residents. “This is fantastic for all people living in the Pumicestone Electorate. This is something I have been fighting for since being elected as I know just how important these vital upgrades are for residents who have to deal with the congestion and changing road conditions on a daily basis.” Ms Wilson said. Joining the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack and LNP Candidate for Longman Trevor Ruthenberg for their announcement, Ms Wilson said upgrades to Bribie Island Road have been a long time coming. “Upgrading Bribie Island should have been done years ago but instead Labor have never given this any priority.

“Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has no excuse not to immediately commence congestion busting and safety improvement works thanks to this funding by the Federal Government. “$20 million for priority road infrastructure and safety upgrades is now there, ready and waiting. It’s now up to the Premier to put the pedal to the metal and get these upgrades going. “I will be advocating strongly for the dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection to be on the top of the list for traffic signalling to be installed”. Ms Wilson said. Ms Wilson said last months commitment will ultimately make travelling safer and easier for all who rely on Bribie Island Road. “This announcement shows what happens when the LNP at a State and Federal level work together to achieve outcomes that benefit the whole community.” Ms Wilson said.

Senior’s Week Amelia Strazdins

With a growing community and a significant increase in population, the age gap is expanding and communication between younger and older generations is decreasing. Older members of the community are also becoming less recognised, however the government plans to change that. Every year, the Queensland government organises a week that is an opportunity for Queensland citizens to recognise the valuable contributions that older members make to our society. In 2018, the week has been organised to run from the eighteenth to the twenty-sixth of August and has a main focus on encouraging Queenslanders of all ages to join together to recognise and celebrate what senior members of society bring to communities. Senior’s week also aims to further improve societies attitudes as a whole towards ageing and older citizens. It pushes to create a positive stigma around generational gaps and encourages younger people to listen and learn about different times and age groups. Another key aspect of the week is to help facilitate a larger amount of community participation, with participation in clubs such as rotary being heavily encouraged. Activities and social interaction is also supported and endorsed by the government, which not only aims to create friendship between older people it also pushes for the inclusion of older members that may come from indigenous, culturally

and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The combination of these activities is working towards an outcome where stronger community connections are made, and inter-generational relationships are used to help create a further understanding of past decades and important events. During this time in August, older members of society are encouraged to engage and talk about current events. Queensland Seniors Week is coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA), QLD. Not only have they run this event for numerous years, but it also receives funding from the Queensland Government. This funding helps to plan, run and provide subsidies of $100,000 (in total) which allows for multiple organisations across all of Queensland plan and execute events and activities. This event has always been successful and the COTA Queensland, a non-profit organisation, is further working to advance the rights and needs of people as they age. Both the State Government and COTA Queensland, value the contributions made such as volunteer work, people becoming advocates and community leaders. The council fully supports the Queensland vision of building more age-friendly communities. Progressions in society make it vital that intergenerational friendships can be strongly formed, and cultural traditions are continued. With Bribie Island having large numbers of older members and increasing numbers of younger citizens it is important all generations are respected. It is significant that all members of the community are recognised for their contribution and are apricated.

Proceeds of crime to fund ‘dob in a dealer’ campaign The Turnbull Government will commit further funding to Crime Stoppers Australia to continue the Dob in a Dealer campaign nationwide in 2018-19. One million dollars will be provided from assets confiscated by the Commonwealth as proceeds of crime, meaning the program will be fully funded by money that was once destined to line the pockets of our most serious criminals. Dob in a Dealer is a call to action to the Australian community to provide Crime Stoppers with information that will assist law enforcement disrupt the import, manufacture and supply of ice and other harmful illicit drugs. The Minister for Home Affairs Peter Dutton announced the new funding in the electorate of Longman in Queensland where the previous campaign produced strong results. The last Dob in a Dealer campaign, which ran between February 2016 and March 2017, saw an average increase of 95 per cent in drug-related information reports, including an increase of 143 per cent in the number of amphetaminerelated reports from the public. During 2016 in Queensland alone, Crime Stoppers received more than 17,000 drug-related information reports, including more than 5200 amphetaminerelated reports. This led to more than 600 arrests and the seizure of more than $1 million worth of drugs. “The campaign puts the spotlight on those involved in the making and selling of illicit drugs across Australia,” Mr Dutton said. “By using proceeds of crime funding, the Government is depriving criminals of their illicitly obtained assets while channelling this money back into our communities and reducing the impacts of crime. “Every dealer, no matter how large or small their enterprise, is connected to organised crime. Their actions are far reaching and they are causing significant harm to Australian families and communities.”

Community keep anyone safe at the moment as he’s too busy protecting his own job.” As part of this campaign, Crime Stoppers will visit local communities across Australia to ask residents to be active in reporting those that are involved in the manufacture and supply of illicit drugs. This funding to the Dob in a Dealer campaign is just one of the many initiatives that are being funded from proceeds of crime to help law enforcement agencies and communities prevent crime across Australia.

Deb says Labor’s rego raid smashes Queensland drivers Queensland drivers will be whacked this winter when Labor’s latest rego hikes which kicked in on July 1.

Queensland already has the nation’s highest rego fees for six and eight cylinder cars and they will climb even higher thanks to Labor’s inflation-busting 3.5 per cent increase. “Queensland drivers pay some of the highest fuel prices in Australia and we pay the highest rego too,” LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said today.

On July 1, the 12-month registration of an eight-cylinder vehicle increased from $742.65 to $768.65.

“The LNP froze rego for three years running, but Labor is squeezing drivers dry.

“Our law enforcement agencies are among the best in the world, but disrupting these criminals and their supply chains can start with intelligencegathering from the community,” Mr Taylor said.

“Susan Lamb has had two years to address the scourge of drugs on the Longman community and is clearly soft on crime or she would have done something by now,” Mr Ruthenberg said.

The Government recently approved an additional $23 million in proceeds of crime funding to Commonwealth law enforcement agencies such as the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission to help prevent crime in our community.

The Minister for Law Enforcement and Cyber Security Angus Taylor said assistance from the community is a cornerstone of effective police work.

“This campaign is a vital initiative to help our agencies eradicate the scourge of drugs from our communities.”

“Queensland drivers deserve a break from Labor’s annual rego raid.”

A six-cylinder registration will increased from $545.80 to $564.90. A four-cylinder registration increased from $364.65 to $377.40. Only the ACT has a higher four-cylinder rego fee – currently $376. Also on July 1, vehicles with a dutiable value of more than $100,000 was hit with an additional two per cent stamp duty, adding thousands to the cost of new cars, campervans and motorhomes under 4.5 tonnes.

YOU CAN BE THE JUDGE WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR COMMENTS belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au Deb Says “Labor refuses to bring down regional power prices” The Palaszczuk Government has again denied regional Queenslanders the same rights as Southeast Queenslanders to choose which retailer they want to supply electricity to their home. Labor Energy Minister Anthony Lynham refused to break Ergon’s monopoly in Queensland’s regions during Parliamentary Estimates. LNP Shadow Energy Minister Michael Hart said the reason electricity prices were so high in regional Queensland was because of one word – Labor. “If Deb Frecklington were Premier she would introduce desperately-needed competition into regional Queensland’s retail electricity market,” Mr Hart said. “The LNP understands that boosting competition in the marketplace is the best way to drive down household power bills. “Labor’s own Productivity Commission recommended retail competition in our regions, but again today Minister Lynham stubbornly refused to acknowledge that recommendation let alone commit to implementing it. “Breaking energy retailer Ergon’s stranglehold on household electricity supply in the regions is estimated to save consumers $300 a year, yet still Labor refuses to act. “While the LNP is committed to ending the electricity divide, Labor is happy to allow record power prices to hurt regional households and businesses.” Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy The Honourable Dr Anthony Lynham said Electricity rebate scheme extended for households, small business Householders could earn up to $225 and small businesses up to $360 over three years with the announcement today by Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham of a three-month extension of Ergon’s Easy Pay Rewards. “Eligible residents will receive a $75 per

year rebate and small businesses $120 per year providing they opt in before the specified dates in exchange for e-billing, direct debit and bill smoothing,’’ Dr Lynham said. “Extending this scheme is further proof of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to easing the cost of living burden on Queenslanders.’’ Dr Lynham announced the extension today in Estimates Hearings for the Natural Resources, Mines and Energy portfolio. “The Palaszczuk Government understands that the cost of living is an issue for families and impacts on small business’ capacity to create jobs,’’ he said. “Our $2 billion Affordable Energy Plan will continue to tackle electricity costs. “More than 53,000 Queensland households are reducing energy usage and bills with the energy efficient appliances we helped them buy with our rebates. “Our means-tested, interest-free loans will help more Queensland families install solar systems. “On top of all this every household is receiving $50 off their power bill this year, and next year, and our price cap guarantees that electricity prices will not rise above inflation for two years.’’ The extension will allow customers who opt-in: • before 30 September 2018, to receive three annual payments; • after 30 September 2018, but before 1 April 2019, to receive two annual payments and • after 1 April 2019, but before 1 January 2020, to receive one annual payment. “Electricity prices are falling in Queensland, unlike under the LNP when prices rose 43 per cent over three years,’’ Dr Lynham said. “Because Queenslanders own their assets, we are able to maintain downward pressure.’’

Sandstone Point Community Carols

The countdown to Christmas is already underway for the planning committee of the Sandstone Point Community Carols. The annual event will once again return to the Sandstone Point Sports Complex on Saturday December 8, giving families a fun night out to enjoy free rides & plenty of live entertainment. The annual event would not be possible if it weren’t for the many local businesses jumping on board to help with fundraising. The planning committee are eagerly searching for sponsors to make this year’s event possible. The funds are then used to hire the rides, pay for the sound & lighting equipment and also take care of the essentials of running a large local event. All sponsors receive plenty in return with their logo and information listed on all promotional marketing, including in the newspaper and on posters around the area. This information is also included in the Bribie Cinema advertising clip, which runs for 7 weeks prior to the Christmas event. We hear that there are still plenty of big announcements to be made in the coming months about this year’s Sandstone Point Community Carols, including rides, entertainment, food stalls & a few big bangs towards the end of the night. Details to be released soon. The 3 groups involved with organizing this year’s event include The Sandstone Point Community Association, The Lions Club of Sandstone Point, with the support of The Sandstone Community Church.

The Rotary Club of Bribie Island has a small dedicated team of 30 members, who work tirelessly to make our world a better place. For the last two years we were honoured to be awarded the Lionel McCray Memorial Trophy for the most Outstanding Club in our District. Therefore we are asking readers if you have some spare time or feel you want to help but don’t know how, come along to one of our meetings and see how you, as part of the Rotary family, can achieve change and have the satisfaction of

Fit Beyond 50 – Knowledge And Experience Personalised Fitness For Any Body At Any Age NO JOINING FEE, NO CONTRACTS, NO CANCELLATION FEE www.fitbeyond50.net.au

BUTTERFLIES OR CRABS Are you a social butterfly or a hermit crab? My hubby is a multi-coloured vibrant social butterfly who loves being in the middle of large groups of people. He mixes and mingles and flits from person to person with ease. Me? I’m a bit crabby when it comes to gatherings, I’m a corner dwelling hermit by nature and love nothing better than a large shell to hide under, yep my comfort zone was a book and a corner, and it’s the main reasons I am now in Toastmasters so that I can work on growing some wings. And why is growing my wings so important to me? Because so much research now shows how social isolation is at least as deadly as smoking — doubling your risk of early death — and that those with more and higher-quality relationships are at lower risk for a host of illnesses including heart disease and stroke. In fact, having strong friendships or family connections reduces your risk of early death more than exercising or avoiding obesity does —Being socially active has been found to be as important for your health as not smoking. So when it comes to being fit and active a fitness class atmosphere is a super double whammy of warm fuzzy goodness for your health! But not all classes are social. Some fitness classes can make it easy for a crab like me to hide away down the back in a corner behind all the butterflies. Crabs can get through a whole hour class without making eye contact with another participant or even the instructor. They scuttle through the exercises and escape sideways out the door as soon as the class finishes. So crabs in those classes are definitely not getting all of the benefits that a fitness class can offer.

Now because I am a crab I understand how important it is to make sure that the environment in our classes and the personal training rooms is somewhere that makes everyone feels comfortable, social and safe. It was the defining thing about creating Fit Beyond 50. While working in a gym atmosphere I discovered that trying to convince ladies of a certain age to step into a busy crowded workout room was a workout for me! They felt uncomfortable and embarrassed and shrank into their shells before my eyes. Exactly the same way I felt when I first started going to a local gym. So we concentrate on making our spaces welcoming. Our PT clients have the studios all to themselves but most importantly our circuit classes are small, friendly and you are always involved in a group of fun, laughing and supportive people while you work out. Even crabs like me love our classes and as they grow in fitness they grow in confidence and their butterfly wings appear. Of course the butterflies love our circuit classes as they are always right beside someone and this makes it easy to make new friends or chat to old ones while still getting a good fat burning workout. Research shows us that if a community is social and active, there is a very positive improvement in the health of that community and understanding how important that is, Moreton Bay Regional Council encourages fitness professionals to become part of the Healthy and Active Moreton Bay programme.

Senior Gentle Band Strength Exercises

Before You Start!

Bands are a great way to add resistance to your exercise program. They can be purchased cheaply from Kmart Use a stable high backed chair, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Please start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the same as the gentle band exercise we do in our Heartbeats classes. When the exercises work one arm at a time – think about your body, does one arm have better movement than the other? Is one elbow more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Band exercises can be a fun activity but will only show benefits if they are done regularly. Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your strength. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

Band Chest Press

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Bring band UNDER your armpits – hold on to both ends of the band Push band out hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pushes as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Band Seated Row

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Place band UNDER BOTH feet – hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band backwards and try and squeeze your shoulder blades together hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Band Bicep Curl

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Sit on the band or if it is long enough place under both feet Hold on to both ends of the band Turn your inside wrists upwards and tuck your elbows in Pull the band up towards your shoulder hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

Band Chest Pull

Use a stable chair – Sit up straight, do not lean as chair may tip or slide Hold on to the band with both hands at a point where you have a little slack in the band Pull the band out as far as you can while holding it steady at chest height. Hold for a count of “one and two” Resist the band coming back and wait for a count of “one and two” If you find it too difficult release some of the band to make it easier. Repeat slowly, only do as many pulls as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

My Heartbeats classes have been included in these council run community programmes for over 7 years and once again they will be included in the August to October activities. So what does this mean for you? It means you can come to FREE Heartbeats classes every Wednesday from the 1st of August to the 3rd of October 2018 thanks to the Moreton Bay Council! Heartbeats classes are definitely social! The programme, originally designed by the Australian Heart Foundation, is suitable for anyone who wants gentle exercises, including those who may have a chronic condition such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, obesity or cancer or for just a little something to add to your walking. The movements include using resistance bands for strength, balance exercises, gentle aerobic exercises and a little fun juggling to keep those brain cells healthy, and of course I’ve made sure that the classes are set up in a semicircle to stop the crabs scuttling to the back and the butterflies flying to the front. Everyone has a chair to have a sit down if they need it and you always works to your own comfortable level and being social is absolutely encouraged! While my butterfly wings are still not used as much as they should, I can honestly say that taking these classes has certainly made me a fit, healthy and a far more confident crab who doesn’t want to be a hermit any longer.

on 0408803037 to sign up for the Heartbeats Wednesday classes for Free from the 1st of August till October, I promise I won’t be crabby!

Fit Beyond Fifty’s Cathy McGillvray is a Bribie treasure. She lights up not only my own life, but also the lives of many. I attend her Heartmoves classes three times a week and am a healthier, happier woman because of it! ‘Thank you all for coming’ she begins. ‘Make sure you do the exercises to suit your body. If you start to feel uncomfortable, sit down. Every so often I’ll ask you how you feel- not because I care’ ( everyone laughs) ‘but because you need to be able to say five words without being breathless.’ And I will ask you to have frequent drinks of water.’ So the scene is set. We over 50s must be comfy, must breathe, smile and enjoy ourselves. I have osteoporosis. So far I have fallen and broken bones three times. Yet, because of an exercise regime that is frequent and deals with every part of the body, I am agile, pain free and stronger. I am grateful. Thank you Cathy.

BEACHMERE PHARMACY

Women’s Health Women are amazing and complex creatures, inherently nurturers and carers, and generally prioritizing everyone else’s needs before ourselves. Have you ever taken a step back and contemplated the amazingness of what our female bodies provide? The bearers of new life, the ability to do all the things we love, running and climbing, swimming and playing, and all those things that keep our sparkle alive. Time to show appreciation for the body we are in, and recognise that like everything, bodies come in all shapes and sizes and that the currency of beauty needs to be redefined by qualities like kindness, compassion and humility, rather than thigh gaps, flat stomachs, or eyebrow shape. We can usually find time to appreciate other special women in our lives- our beautiful mothers, sisters and girlfriends but who truly appreciates the value of ourselves as women? A key to showing our bodies respect and gratitude is to fuel and nourish them with the food we eat and our lifestyle choices. So maybe you are lucky enough to be part of the small minority who breeze through womanhood and its various stages without a hitch, or you may be one of us who are affected by the varying effects of all the fun that being a woman provides, in our array of fluctuating hormonal imbalances and the precarious balance to keep us feeling on top of it all, at all times. Gaining a better understanding of how to manage our hormones and other factors that come in to play can lead to our increased health and wellbeing. Whatever stage you are in is a natural part of being a woman that everyone experiences, it contributes to all the amazingness that womanhood has to offer. The four life stages are: • Menarche- first period around ages 10- 15 years • The reproductive years • Perimenopause- the 2-12 year period before menopause with fluctuating hormone levels •

Menopause – between 45-55 years, when oestrogen declines and your period stops. (Becomes official a year after your last period).

The main hormones that are involved in a females cycle are • Follicular Stimulating Hormone (FSH) which stimulates puberty, ovulation and oestrogen •

Oestrogen, which is super important to the various functions of your cycle and is also involved in bone, muscle, heart, brain, sleep, skin, metabolism and blood glucose regulation. However an excess of eostrogen can also be associated with many negative effects such as excess body fat, depression and headaches, impaired blood sugar balance, fluid retention, sore lumpy breasts and zinc

deficiency

• Diet and lifestyle factors

Natural solutions for hormone imbalances can work by addressing the deficiency or excess in the activity of the hormone. • Luteinising Hormone (LH) triggering ovulation and essential for progesterone

• promoting sleep, protection against heart disease, and calms the nervous system. • Others that come into play are testosterone and DHEA

Some common conditions experienced by women associated with hormones and imbalances can be: •

Pre Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)- a collection of physical and emotional symptoms that occur in the lead up to your period, experienced by 50-80% of women. Your hormones interact with other brain chemicals which can have an affect on your moods. When your body makes less progesterone in the time before your period it has an effect on your feel good calming relaxing brain chemical GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) which results in irritability, anxiety and sleeplessness.

•

B vitamins, Vitamin B6, Iodine, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Evening primrose, Indole-3 Carbinol, DIM, Calcium -D-Glucarate, Probiotics, Inositol, Quercetin, Vitamin D, Iron, chromium, tryptophan, vitamin E, folate

The different types of PMS that women can experience can be associated with symptoms such as bloating, fluid retention, breast tenderness, headache, depression, anxiety and social withdrawal, anxiety, irritability, mood swings and cravings.

And avoid: caffeine, alcohol, and processed takeaway foods as they contribute to excess oestrogen and promote inflammation

• Dysmenorrhea- dull, heavy, cramping period pain

Community

Come on Island and Surrounds small businesses, lets make our community Dementia Friendly! Joanne Alison-Schouw see’s every day the affect Dementia can have on people including loved ones. She would like to see all businesses get involved and our region become a dementia friendly community. She said, if our small business would get involved and provide accessible services to people with dementia including having staff who understand dementia and communicate effectively with people who have dementia.

A business that will take time to provide a little extra support for people living with Dementia will be recognise with a certificate, a dementia friendly sticker for their business and your logo on this regular column as a business that is a dementia friendly. One of the key messages about a dementia friendly community is a place where people living with dementia are

Love

An Impossible Tangle of Butterflies!

By Staff Writer: Harvey Fewings.

It is the same small town we have talked about before; we know where it is: on the Warrego in Western Queensland. Marigold the Councillor lives there, you may remember her, she sends all the dogs up as she drives around the town, in her puddle jumper Land Rover, singing the evocative music from ‘ Carmen‘; “ If you love me – it is the end of you.” Better known as ‘ Habanera ‘ from Bizet’s beautiful Opera. Marigold has a sister, and her name is Juanita. She lives up the river a bit, and she is a large animal veterinarian. Juanita is tall like her sister, long, brown hair and green eyes, that flash lightning from time to time. But that is where the comparison ends. Marigold is a popular organiser of events and other community moments around this beautiful little town – Juanita is a professional large animal vet, not married, but longed for, by most of the young bucks on the surrounding stations and a few of the married ones as well! But not for Juanita, she has had her moments with men, loved about four, committed herself to two, actually lived with one for two years, and remains stunned and hurt, by the abrupt end of their star-crossed life by the brutal blast of a suicidal shotgun in the tractor shed down

supported to live a high quality of life with meaning, purpose and value. It also helps them to continue to be active participants in their own lives and our community. Bribie Respite and Support Services offers people with dementia, living in our community the opportunity to be part of a social and friendly group. They provide a team of familiar faces and a home like happy atmosphere where people with dementia are supported with assistance and care to have quality of life. While more and more people choose to remain living in their own home as they age, it is important that people living with dementia and their carers are supported to make living in their own home possible. We do this by providing respite and support for carers and for those with dementia, a place to relax, get out of the house and enjoy a happy day. Bribie Island and surrounding areas have the potential to help people with dementia to sustain their independence, their dignity and their sense of purpose for as long as possible. If you want to be a dementia friendly business, please contact Joanne Alison-Schouw on 3408 2112 or visit the website of www.dementiafriendly. org.au. Joanne will assist you with what you need.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU! by the Warrego. Bushwomen are strong, and life must go on: droughts, bushfires, suicides, lonely and very alone births, plus predatory banks make the challenges bloody big: but close, tough friends and mates keep them getting out of bed each day, like their urban sisters, who face different challenges, but deal with them in the same way – head on! As it goes, the ticking of the time clock has taken them all, in this place, from Winter to Spring and early Summer – it is now October. And rains will come. Seasonal changes bring our other mate, whom we know, him of the blue boots, to this town, to do business with cattle, blokes, trucks and pubs. He also has a mate: down by the town weir, and only he and one other, Olive the darkskinned bar girl, with really short hair, from the Pub, know of the deal. His mate is a pink-eyed, croaky-voiced, bunyip, with skin like blue buck-skin, who lives in this reach of the Warrego along with about, maybe, ten other bunyips, who live in their territorial waters on the Warrego running North from our particular town. Their existence and the places where they live are pretty much secret bunyip business: but we all know that the bush has secrets we don’t know about, some whispering voices, in the trees and the gentle winds, tell those secrets to those whom they trust. Once business was complete, and all the drinks were drunk, and hands were shaken -our mate had a few spare days in the town. The weather was calm and cold; the nights were bright with sizzling starlight. It was time to check on his mate the blue-skinned bunyip. Very early the next morning, while the moon was drifting slowly West, he sat quietly by the river bank just slightly North of the town and waited. He did nothing, just looked at the silver water and waited. Gentle puffs of river wind shimmered the silvery gums and riffled the mirror of the water’s surface. Twenty minutes slid slowly past, the Moon drifted further to the West, and then, ‘ blink ‘, a

pair of pink eyes emerged from the bullrushes on the other side of the river. A moment passed, gone in a flash, then, ‘ blink ‘, right in front of him. They were back as a rustling voice, behind the big pink eyes, rustled, “ G’Day, “ The two of them spoke softly for a few minutes as ‘ bunyip ‘ wriggled up onto the river bank by our mate. He moved a bit awkwardly, and the pink eyes wrinkled with pain. “ Any chance of a favour? “ Bunyip rustled. “ Sure. “ Blue Boots replied. “ You know that vet that lives up the river a bit, the one with long brown hair and green eyes with lightning? “ Bunyip sighed. “ Yep. “ Blue Boots replied. “ Reckon you could meet us? I reckon I have a crook hamstring. “ The pink eyes looked straight at him. Bunyips almost never ask for favours from land people; this was something rare. “ I, ll try. “ Blue Boots shrugged. “ I will let you know pretty quick.” On his way back into town, Blue Boots thought that this might be a real challenge; I mean how am I going to convince Juanita about a blueskinned bunyip with a crook hammy? Towards dusk, on the afternoon of the next day, Blue Boots arrived at Juanita’s place. He found her down by the river bank next to a large butterfly house of beautiful Western Queensland butterflies. All sizes, shapes and colours, they whispered and fluttered about her, on her arms, her shoulders and in her hair as she lay on the soft short grass by her riverbank. She was a well-known collector of these short-lived, elegant creatures. Blue Boots began his story. Her green eyes became more massive and rounder, each moment he talked. “ Mate, are you really asking me to look at a bloody blue bunyip’s hamstring? Here? In this river? How many Jameson’s have you had? “ The cloud of butterflies fluttered and swooped; she almost disappeared amongst them. Blue Boots softly repeated his story, pointing out what a rare thing this was; he held her eyes in his, and his sincere, calm voice convinced

Juanita that the story had legs. Just after midnight, that night, the Moon was brighter and still drifting West; the butterflies floated about their cage and the patch of short soft grass on the riverbank, many of them, particularly the white ones rested on Juanita’s fore-arms and the shoulders of Blue Boot’s shirt. The two of them silently watched and waited. Then… “ G’Day . “ a soft voice rustled, and bright pink eyes were there, right in front of them. Wriggling up onto the soft grass, Bunyip brought a cloud of butterflies onto his blue back. And, there they were. A blue bunyip with a dodgy hamstring, Juanita, Blue Boots and an impossible tangle of butterflies on a river bank in Western Queensland. Juanita can tell the story. ‘ How Rapid Gel works wonders on hammys! ‘ She shares it with her butterflies, and two trusted friends around the district, including Olive who already knows the deal. Blue Boots spoke to his mate some nights later. The pink eyes glowed brighter than ever – “ She has soft hands, and that stuff works well, I reckon her green eyes and my pink ones work well together, don’t you? “ Blue Boots chased a smile around his face and nodded to his blue mate. Driving back to town, he tossed the events around in his mind. He laughed out loud. “ Jesus, a bunyip, a jar of Rapid Gel, a big mob of white butterflies and an elegant, beautiful vet with green eyes. How does that work? “ Well it doesn’t really, does it ? But, who knows what actually happens out there in the bush? And we should never let our imagination stop us thinking – because one day, you could find yourself in an impossible tangle of butterflies without your jar of Rapid Gel.

Palaszczuk Government invests in new Water Police boats The Palaszczuk Government is investing $5.4 million in new Water Police boats to ensure the Queensland Police Service has the resources it needs to keep Queenslanders safe. Six large vessels are being delivered across the state including a new 17m boat for Water Police based at Mooloolaba. A further eight 5.5m vessels will be deployed in the far north’s Cape York region. Redland Bay will receive two new vessels including a high speed twelve metre barge that also has greater cargo capacity. This will give Water Police the ability for faster deployment to the Bay islands. Seven new jet-skis will also be delivered to the Water Police fleet. Minister for Police Mark Ryan said the investment will ensure Water Police operations across the state remain cutting edge. “The Queensland Police Service is recognised internationally for its adoption of the best technology available. “Across the board the Palaszczuk Government is ensuring police have upto-date equipment.” “I visited the Torres Strait recently and witnessed first hand how critical effective Water Police operations are to the communities on Horn Island and Thursday Island. “The new vessels we are delivering are either faster or have a greater range than the vessels they are replacing. “The Palaszczuk Government will always ensure the Queensland Police Service has the resources it needs to get the job done,” Minister Ryan said.

SEEN AROUND These photo’s were taken by a local lady, Joanne Plumb Ryan who was watching the filming of a Sealeg Craft. It was filmed at Sylvan Beach Boat Ramp. The Sealegs system consists of motorised, retractable and steerable wheels which are fitted to specially designed boats to give users a fully integrated, turn-key package.

Queensland ban on single use plastic bags now in effect Historic change to reduce plastic pollution in Queensland has now come into effect, with the Palaszczuk Government’s ban on single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags now in place across the state. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said that the ban would reduce the growing environmental challenge of plastic pollution and to protect the state’s precious environment and wildlife. “Queenslanders use close to one billion of these plastic shopping bags per year and about 16 million of these end up in our precious environment,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “Littered plastic shopping bags pollute the natural environment and waterways and can end up in our beautiful oceans. “About 75 per cent of the marine debris collected along the Queensland coastline is made up of plastic materials. “Disturbingly, around 90 per cent of all seabirds have ingested plastic debris as have 30 per cent of turtles. “It’s incredibly sad to see how this plastic waste endangers our marine wildlife, which often mistake plastic items particularly plastic shopping bags for their natural food. “The Palaszczuk Government’s ban on plastic bags will bring us in line with other states in Australia and will make a change for the better.” Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said that the plastic bag ban was one of the Palaszczuk Government’s initiatives to reduce plastic pollution. “From today, retailers can no longer supply single-use lightweight plastic shopping bags less than 35 microns,” Ms Enoch said. “It’s been great to see shoppers and retailers prepare for the ban ahead of time and changing behaviour to help benefit our beautiful state. “This small change will have a big impact on our environment and wildlife and I thank retailers and shoppers for playing their part in tackling plastic pollution.” Ms Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was also working towards another initiative to reduce plastic pollution - the Container Refund Scheme - which will come into effect in November. “The scheme will not only reduce plastic pollution but will help to improve recycling across the state,” Ms Enoch said. “We are also currently working with government, environmental groups, industry and the research community to develop a long-term plan to reduce the amount of plastic entering and in the environment.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey says Longman’s been waiting a long time for Turnbull to take an interest Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey has called on Malcolm Turnbull to focus on national projects that require federal funding like the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line as the Prime Minister splashes cash across the Longman electorate. “We welcome the Turnbull Government’s sudden interest in the people of Longman and the recently announcement Bribie Island Road funding to match what we have already spent on that road, but the Federal Coalition sadly do not have good form in appropriately investing in this region,” Mr Bailey said. “Residents of Longman will be some of the biggest beneficiaries of the critically important Beerburrum to Nambour rail line duplication, which will deliver increased capacity, travel time savings for passenger and freight services, and increased reliability on the North Coast Line. “The Palaszczuk Government allocated $160.8 million in funding for this upgrade in this year’s budget, ensuring detailed design can get underway followed by construction. “But the Turnbull Government is continuing to treat the people of Longman and the Sunshine Coast as second class citizens, so far only offering to fund the project on a 50:50 basis. “That’s despite the fact that the federal LNP Government amended the national land transport network to include the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line, necessitating an 80:20 funding split, according to their own rules.” http:// minister.infrastructure.gov.au/jb/ releases/2014/December/jb137_2014. aspx “We are just asking for a fair funding deal. Mr Bailey said more than $20 million had already been allocated to Caboolture-Bribie Island Road by the State, including: • Upgrade of Caboolture-Bribie Island intersection with Old Toorbul Point Road - $10.5 million • Safety improvements at the Lee and Peel Road intersection and Aylward Road intersection at Ningi - $3.7 million • Detailed planning and design to improve motorist and pedestrian safety on Caboolture-Bribie Island Road between Kal Ma Kuta Drive and Bestmann Road (East) intersections $755,000 • Installation of a dedicated right-turn lane on Caboolture-Bribie Island Road $797,000

• Planning to upgrade two-lane section of Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to four-lane, median divided carriageway between Hickey and Saint Roads intersections - $3 million • Resurfacing works undertaken on both carriageways of Caboolture-Bribie Island Road, west of Lee and Peel Road intersection - $1.5 million “What’s more, Mr Turnbull’s $20 million is small change which won’t even make a dent into the full cost of his proposed extra lane from Saints Road to Hickey Road, including the Old Toorbul Road intersection,” Mr Bailey said. “The Department of Transport and Main Roads’ preliminary estimate indicates that those upgrades would in fact cost between $100 to $160 million. “The Palaszczuk Government is continuing to invest heavily in transport infrastructure across the North Coast district, including Bribie Island Road, as part of another record investment in road and transport infrastructure for the third year in a row. “Our funding total is $700 million higher than the previous QTRIP, despite the fact that funding from the Federal LNP government has decreased by 6.2%. Thankfully this has been offset by a 10% increase in the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment. “In this year’s budget we are delivering $509.7 million in this region alone,” he said. Major projects being delivered across the North Coast District include: Bruce Highway Upgrade Project, continue widening of the highway from four to six lanes between Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway and upgrading the interchanges for a total cost of $812.9 million (2018-19 $200 million in joint funding) Bruce Highway, continue installing safety barriers along the highway between Beerburrum and Cooroy for a total cost of $79.8 million (2018-19 $42.5 million in joint funding) Burpengary Caboolture Road (locally known as Morayfield Road) and Beerburrum Road Route Safety project, start work on safety treatments along these sections between the Bruce Highway and D’Aguilar Highway overpass for a total cost of $28.8 million (2018-19 $8 million, state funding) Continue upgrades to improve access to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital for a total cost of $22 million (201819 $4.8 million) with works starting on a third package to improve capacity at Nicklin Way between Main Drive and Waterview Street and provide access from Production Avenue to Kawana Way (State funding) Caboolture Connection Road Route Safety Strategy, continue safety improvements along various locations on Caboolture Connection Road between the Bruce Highway and D’Aguilar Highway for a total cost of $7.6 million (2018-19 $3.7 million in State funding)

Porto Portugal –

Porto, Portugal’s second largest city and the birth place of port-wine. A lively and vibrant manufacturing centre built on the Rio Douro River which is spanned by five dramatic bridges. Here are a few great things to do that will leave you wanting more.

Porto THE FIRST IS - DOM LUIS I BRIDGE It has to be said that you cannot miss this iconic structure, no matter where you stand in the hills of Porto. Opened in 1886, it joins the city of Porto on the River Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia. At the time of construction, it held the record for the largest iron arch and longest span bridge in the world. The top level of the bridge is now used for trains only. Prior to 2005 cars also shared the space with trams. Today the lower level is shared with pedestrians and it is definitely the best vantage point to view Old Porto with a great view across to many of the wineries such as CALEM and SANDEMAN. Take in the lay of the Rio Douro on both sides and if you are there on a weekend you may see the local sail boat races. THE WINERIES OF PORTO With over 15 wineries in the Gaia region

Travel

home to more than just port

Torre dos Clerigos Tower and not a lot of time in the city, it can be a little difficult to know where to start. You read reviews, some saying don’t go here or there as the samples are tiny. I believe this to be a good thing even though I doubt the accuracy having been a sampler myself. The history of Porto is fascinating and for the trivia lover, the oldest port wines are white. The Caves Calem and the Caves Sandeman are both located on the river line of Porto. One of the oldest situated a little further up the hill is TAYLOR’S. The winery started way back in 1692 so I think they would have the distilling down to a fine art by now. SE CATHEDRAL Built originally in the 12th century, the central Cathedral houses some of the most valued Romanesque items of its time. Chalice that are over 1000 years old, encrusted in diamonds and other precious stones stand proud amongst the worshippers and the Gothic cloisters.

While not stunning from the exterior, once you step inside the massive doors, that all changes in an instant. Open from 9am to 12.30pm then 2.30 to 7pm daily except Sunday mornings. CAIS da RIBEIRA – THE MEDIEVAL HEART Listed by UNESCO in 1996, the Ribeira is the social hub of the city. Stretching languidly on the edge of the River Douro, there are not only an abundance of restaurants but many ancient homes in various stages of decay lining the tiny alleyways. If you plan on driving into Porto, the small “streets” are the ones to be aware of. Only small cars will make it down or up. A perfect place to sit and soak up some of what Portugal is so very proud of, history. ANTIGA CADEIA da RELACAO The ancient jail and courthouse belies

the history from the outside but as with many of the buildings in Porto, step inside and it is another story entirely. It is situated in the heart of Porto near Clerigos Tower, the tallest building in the city. Many valuable antiquities are housed here making this one of the most visited sites in Porto. TORRE dos CLERIGOS The translated meaning is “Tower of the Clergy” and standing at 76 metres high, it is one of the oldest towers in Porto. Built in the 18th century and opening to the public in 1763, today is a UNESCO heritage site. The Roman Baroque charm draws you near but the site of the 235 almost vertical steps may have you feeling fit at the attempt. The view from the top is unmistakably brilliant. FOCUS ON

Sue and Chris Venderley opened Sue's cafe and takeaway in June of 2014. Being American and Australian, the food has blended into just that. A very well balanced mix of both styles of food. Sue's 40+ years as a chef of Aussie cuisine and Chris's influence of American style foods has culminated into what it is today. Most of what we use is locally sourced meat and veggies and this shows in the flavours we create. Our meat patty's, chili con carne, salsa, napoli, spicy coatings and even our own chicken salt are just a few of our own recipes with flavours you wont find anywhere else. We now have 20 burgers on our menu, the newest being our Mac Daddy that has deep fried home made Mac and cheese on it. New burger creations are being added as we perfect them. Our flavour creations are not restricted to just our burgers, we also have a large selection of loaded fries! Chips cheese gravy, Chili cheese fries, bacon cheese fries, pizza fries, BBQ chicken fries, all of which have our home made meats and sauces. We also have a great range of fresh fish in our display. All of which come from Australia or New Zealand. And who can forget about our chicken? SFC, (Sue's fried chicken) has a huge following all its own as it melts in your mouth. Having a party at home and don't have the time to make your own gravy or coleslaw? Well we got that covered too! According to our customers, we got the best around! So as you can see, we have something for everyone. Including many family packs and dinner combo's to suit just about anyone. Come on down and see us and bring your appetite!

Online shopping, classifieds and auction scams Consumers and businesses ae increasingly buying and selling online. Unfortunately, scammers like to shop online for victims. Scammers can create very convincing Fake retailer websites that look like the real thing, including n social media like facebook. The biggest tip off that a retail website is a scam is the method of payment – be wary if you are asked to pay by wire transfer or other unusual methods. An online auction scam involves a scammer claiming that you have a second chance to by an item that you placed a bid on because the winner has pulled out. The scammer will ask you to pay outside of the auction site secure payment facility; if you do, your money will be lost you won’t get what you paid for and the auction site will not be able to help you. The Online classifieds scam is a common scam targeting both buyers and sellers. Buyers should be aware of scammers who post fake ads on legitimate classifieds websites. The ads can be for anything from rental properties to pets, used cars or cameras, and will often be cheaply priced. If you show interest in the item, the scammer may claim that they are travelling or have moved overseas and that an agent will deliver the goods following receipt of

payment. Following payment, you will not receive the goods or be able to contact the seller. For sellers, a classified scammer will respond to your advertisement with a generous offer. If you accept it, the scammer will pay b cheque or money order. However, the amount that you receive is for more than the agreed price. In this overpayment scam, the ‘buyer’ may tell you that this was a mistake and will ask you to refund the excess amount by money transfer. The scammer hopes that you will transfer the money before you discover that their cheque has bounced or that the money order was phony. You will lose the money, as well as the item you sold if you ave already sent it. Protect yourself • Find out exactly who you are dealing with. If it is an Australian retailer, you are in a much better position to sort out the problem if something goes wrong. • Check if the seller is reputable, has a refund policy and complaint handling service. • Avoid any arrangement that asks or up-front payment via money order, wire transfer, international funds transfer, preloaded card or electronic currency. It is rare to recover money sent this way. Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone you don’t know or trust and never by email • Only pay via the websites secure payment method – look for a web address starting with “https” and a closed padlock symbol • Never accept a cheque or money order for payment that is more than what you agreed upon or forward money on for anyone.

Bond, Operation Bond

HARRIET LEE PROPERTY Real Estate Professionals

A joint agency crackdown on real estate agents withholding tenants’ bonds in Queensland has led to investigations against 13 agents, with a further 20 agents targeted for follow up inquiries, in the name of consumer protection. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and the Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA) partnered for a joint compliance operation from January-April this year. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the operation was established in response to concerns that tenants’ rights were being ignored by agents who weren’t lodging bonds with the RTA within required timeframes.

“Bond money does not belong to a real estate agent and must be transferred to the RTA correctly and within legislated timeframes,” Mrs D’Ath said. “Most agents are doing the right thing; but it’s important that tenants are treated fairly and legally, and I’m pleased to see action taken against non-compliant agencies,” Mrs D’Ath said. “This behaviour also impacts on the broader integrity of the industry and I know agents welcome such investigations so that all are not tarred with the same brush.” The OFT issued statutory notices to 54 real estate agencies across the state, requesting agents provide their rent roll information to the OFT. The rent rolls were then compared against bonds held with the RTA to identify any potential bond money discrepancies. Of the 54 statutory notices issued: • 21 agencies were deemed compliant with no discrepancies identified • 20 agencies featured discrepancies between their rent rolls and the RTA register of lodged bonds and required further investigation by both OFT and the

RTA • 9 agencies required further follow up investigation by the RTA • 4 agencies were found to be noncompliant, with other issues identified including misapplication of trust monies, and these agencies are now subject to investigations being undertaken by the OFT. Minister for Housing Mick de Brenni said the operation demonstrated the value of data sharing between agencies to ensure statutory requirements are upheld in the industry. “Data sharing between agencies means better service for Queenslanders, but it also enhances the RTA’s enforcement and compliance capabilities,” Mr de Brenni said. “Some of the agencies identified as being non-compliant had failed to lodge upwards of 60 bonds. Operation Bond has meant OFT and the RTA have been able to identify and deal with these with a single operation, rather than having to undertake 60 or more separate investigations. “Queenslanders should be able to have confidence that OFT and the RTA are ensuring real estate licensees are acting fairly and lawfully.” Mrs D’Ath said the OFT would continue to investigate allegations of real estate agents who misappropriate bond money and take action against those who do. “If you think a real estate salesperson or agent may have inappropriately dealt with your bond money I’d encourage you to lodge a complaint with the OFT,” Mrs D’Ath said. A complaint can be lodged at www.qld.gov. au/fairtradingor with the RTA at www.rta. qld.gov.au or by calling 1300 366 311. Information on managing a real estate business in Queensland, including a guide to managing trust accounts is also available on the OFT website

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said it is unacceptable that the Labor Government state run generators were allegedly ‘gaming’ the market to jack up prices and pump profits back into the coffers of the Palaszczuk administration. “This is nothing more than a secret tax grab by the Palaszczuk Government,” Ms Frecklington said. “Well it isn’t a secret any longer, this unacceptable behaviour proves what we have been saying for almost a year that the reason we have record high power bills is because Annastacia Palaszczuk uses electricity like a tax. “The Grattan Institute reports makes it clear that the cost to Queensland consumers of this ‘gaming’ was $673 million in 2017 alone. “It was only when the LNP called out the gaming behaviour that Labor ordered the generators to stop this price gouging. Annastacia Palaszczuk got caught with her hand in the cookie jar and only then did she act.” Ms Frecklington said Queenslanders can’t trust Labor when it comes to energy. “Peter Beattie and Anna Bligh started the rot when it comes to our electricity sector.

PHONE: (07) 5432 4550

The Bligh Government, with Palaszczuk in the Cabinet, gold plated the network which meant massive price increases to pay it off but this gaming is taking it a step further,” she said. “Labor should hang their heads in shame as they are the sole reason Queenslanders have record high electricity bills.” LNP Shadow Energy Minister Michael Hart said the report also endorsed Deb Frecklington’s plan to lower power prices. “The report specifically mentions the LNP’s plan to reform Queensland’s electricity sector is the right way to go*,” Mr Hart said. “The Government’s own modelling shows that creating three state-owned generation companies will reduce wholesale prices by more than 8 per cent. “This is not just a short-term sugar hit, as we regularly see with Labor’s electricity policies, this is a long-term structural reform that is backed by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.” Facts from report: • Wholesale electricity prices increased by 57% in Queensland in 2016/17 (page8) • Gaming added $673 million to the price paid for electricity in Queensland in 2017. This is over 80% of the national increase - $825 million. (page28) • CS Energy and Stanwell recorded record profits in 2016/17 (page28) • Government directives are not a long-term solution because they do not address the structural cause of gaming. Queensland’s recent experience is evidence that under the right

circumstances – market concentration and supply constraints – the market rules permit gaming. Gaming could re-emerge in Queensland or increase in other states unless the market rules are revised. (page28)

assets - the ACCC cannot, for example, force an energy business to sell one of its generators.130 The federal Government could introduce legislation that provided the ACCC with these powers, but it would be a long process.

• “To increase competition in the Queensland spot market, the government should split its generation businesses back into at least three. This would enable the market to deliver more efficient prices, rather than relying on the government directing the behaviour of generators.” (page 47)

*From the report: The Queensland Government over time has reduced the number of publiclyowned generation companies from four to two - CS Energy and Stanwell.127 The Labor Party went to the 2015 state election promising to merge the remaining generation businesses into a single entity. But the ACCC and major energy users expressed concern about the plan and, after winning election, Labor abandoned it. 128 To increase competition in the Queensland spot market, the government should split its generation businesses back into at least three. 129 This would enable the market to deliver more efficient prices, rather than relying on the government directing the behaviour of generators. Disaggregating privately-owned businesses would be harder. The ACCC has no powers to divest a company of its

3D Printers

In 2012, 3D printers dominated every tech event around the world, claiming that it was technology that would ‘change the world’. Over the last 6 years, it is fair to say that this has not occurred; the promise of printing your own spare parts, small objects, or perhaps the latest toy craze made 3D printers very enticing. However for some time they made little impact on gaining consumer dollars. Usher in 2018 and the place of 3D printers within the home is beginning to change. In recent times, 3D printers have enjoyed a significant price decrease over the last several years. Several companies have led this through the development of smaller “desktop” versions of the previously industrial-sized machines. These companies have largely made 3D printers affordable and practical for consumers – consumers who continue to find creative and valuable uses for 3D printing today, even as this emerging technology continues to grow. Advertised as a gimmick in which kids can make toy cars, 3D printers have provided more beneficial in the field of medicine. Surgeons use this tool to help with planning their operations by producing and reviewing 3D printed replicas of the

physical problems. This helps surgeons get a better idea of what the surgery entails – reducing the likelihood of error. Printed models provide a cost effective way for medical students to study human anatomy; instead of requiring cadavers to learn about the body, medical schools simply print models. Aside from using printers for rehearsal and practice, they are also being used to create prosthetic limbs. These are increasingly being developed by way of 3D printing – bringing the latest cutting edge technology in functional prosthetics to entire communities of people that would otherwise not be able to afford or access the care they need. Another useful use of 3D printers is for self-proclaimed inventors and entrepreneurs – a very important industry in the 21st century. This tool allows for the transform of virtual ideas into solid objects. Printing a prototype is often more affordable than building one by hand, and certainly less costly than contracting a manufacturer to do it. Particularly with low quantities of production, inventors can design, print, and test a product in a short time period. Furthermore, printing from the comfort of their home enables inventors to keep their designs confidential, reducing the risk of a concept being imitated. We live in a world that is rapidly changing, with new technology constantly being released. 3D printers were thought to be a tool to change the world, and they may not be doing that, but they are providing opportunities for learning and developing one’s self. They may not have a place in your house, but they have a place in the world.

It is time to turn off the phone

“While smartphones connect us to the world in ways never imagined just a decade ago, they raise issues that previous generations have not had to deal with,” Mr. Stokes told News Corp. We live in a world where we have access to the internet at our fingertips. We live in a world where young children are stimulated with the knowledge of how to function electronic devices. We live in a world where the market is flushed with tech devices. But have schools taken this privilege too far. Mobile phones are a distraction on students’ learning and action must be taken in Australian educational facilities to minimise the issue of these devices in classrooms. This is a controversial topic among educational experts with majority standing against the use of mobile phones in classes. Dr. Joanne Orlando, an expert on children and technology with the University of Western Sydney is in favour of the use of smartphones in classrooms. Her main argument consisted of phones being able to assist in schools promoting STEM. However, a high percentage of schools already have a BYOD policy that can elevate STEM and other learning activities. Dr. Orlando stated, “So, it’s about the students and teachers and the school community understanding how to approach educating students around cyber-safety. And then also finding that nice balance

where they use technology safely, but in a way that actually enhances their learning in the classroom.” One-in-four children under the age of twelve are being stalked, harassed and abused online- we must take action in

prevention of cyberbullying. The New South Wales government has ordered an Australian-first review on the use of smartphones in schools and their links to cyberbullying and online safety. The death of Amy ‘Dolly’ Everett in January this year was a considerable factor of the review being announced. The fourteen-year-old face of Akubra hats took her own life after months of online bullying with her tragic death capturing worldwide attention. The WA Education Department said that the reduction in mobile phone use among students while at school is at the discretion of individual principals. We live in a world where mobile phones are taking over our classrooms and our right to learn. But it is time for us to live in a world where we can be educated in a safe and productive environment that will not be disrupted by technology. MICK’S PATCH Times are changing! Soils ain’t Soils

Landscape Plant of the Month

Sweet or Sour Citrus Care

Have you noticed that the seasons seem to be fluctuating these days with huge variations of Acronychia imperforata or Fraser Island Apple Its that time of year when most citrus fruits have temperatures the norm? I remember last year it seemed one month had 4 seasons all rolled ripened or approaching their final harvest, and this into one. This can be quite a challenge to adapt is a great time to inspect your overall tree health to these climate fluctuations and it seems with and prepare for some management pruning if the unseasonal weather brings plagues of pest needed before the flowers burst again for next year’s pressure on our crops too. I was talking with a crop. I have just pruned back hard- some mandarin, colleague the other day about this very same topic lemon, and orange trees for a client of mine and and we discussed that we have also adapted our as a result I reduced the top of the trees canopy by pruning and fertilising regime to suit- over the years one third, I also trimmed any overly low drooping also. For example, 20 years ago, the main citrus branches near the ground. It might seem a little fertiliser on the market was a compound mixed drastic, but if your citrus trees are very tall and the prilled manufactured chemical fertiliser and the fruit out of reach, then with some careful trimming instructions were to apply it twice yearly, and since now, your tree will be much easier to manage over I have been testing various organic fertilisers over the next few years. the years I have included composted manures If the foliage has been disfigured from pests like into every possible landscape I could, and I would leaf miner during last season, then now is a perfect apply these approximately 4 times a year or once opportunity to inspect and trim and shape your tree. per season. The organic fertilisers break down The trees I had just pruned were nearly 4 metres slowly all year round and become part of the soil tall on average, and once I had a good look inside as a living organism. The trick is to rotate different the canopy, I soon found where all the weak and types of composted manures to get all the benefits stressed branches were, and some branches had which also stimulates the soil microorganisms. Cow cracks which became evident as a result from the manure and blood and bone is excellent and with a weight from all the fruit ripening at once. When planting it difficult to see into your tree need to be trimmed Now this small tree should be used more in the landscape larger trees in the landscape I would plant a few too. SOSEW is not a lackadaisical sewing club By MJ Donovan

But first let’s look at some of the statistics published by Mangrove Housing: • One in seven people experiencing homelessness in Australia are over 55 years old. • More than 40,000 women aged over 65 are doing it tough and at risk of becoming homeless. Add those over 55 especially as retirement age becomes more elusive and housing affordability skyrockets. • Women over 55 have more than 40% less superannuation (if any at all) than their male counterparts due to an era of restricted workforce participation, bearing children, significant wage disparity and roles of caring and fostering allowances paid by the government not having a super component. • These figures are set to more than double by 2036.

Di Hill SOSEW is not a lackadaisical sewing club. It is an organisation started by Di Hill in an attempt to address the needs of the growing number of Solo Senior Women (SOSEW) over 55 who, through no fault of their own, have become the fastest growing homeless population in Australia. Di was a Beachmere resident until rising rents changed her circumstances. Unable to afford her unit any longer, she bought and moved into a camper-van with her limited finances. This story is an update about what Di has been up to since her appearance on the SBS Insight series, portraying homeless women over 55 who have been left by the wayside in our communities.

37

Community

I caught up with Di at her current housesit on Bribie Island. Many homeless women live in their cars or vans, sleep on friends and family’s couches and utilise house-sitting as short term free accommodation in return for caring for homes, gardens and pets. I met many of these ladies while I travelled around Australia and Tasmania. Mostly they were living in free camps and national parks as they were unable to access safe affordable rental accommodation and their utility and water bills had also become untenable. As her photo shows, Di does not look like the stereotypical homeless person. She is well dressed, articulate and meets with many politicians, government housing departments and other interested parties in her quest to assist older women to obtain secure, safe, affordable housing.

In February, while looking into cohousing projects she was invited to Barnet in London, where she stayed at a women’s housing co-operative named New Ground. It was built to meet the needs of the over 55 solo female demographic. Di was amazed at the fantastic apartments and facilities. The women were faced with extreme hurdles from council and builders but managed to overcome the obstacles and achieved a working cooperative that has met their housing, safety and social needs. This is what Di is looking to achieve in Queensland, but there has been no money allocated to this issue in local, state or federal budgets again. Although there is a $51million investment in women’s services and strategies to address disadvantage. We did have a laugh as she recalled her latest visit to a politician. He had a display showing where council had spent their latest funding. It was allocated to several sports ground facility upgrades and various men’s sheds in the area. When asked what spending had been allocated to female groups in his electorate, he thought a moment, then stated they had upgraded a women’s toilet at the sports ground. Women’s homelessness is sadly a growing phenomenon due to inadequate finances, divorce, abuse, mental health issues and rising rents. If you can contribute time, knowledge or become a beneficiary for this proposed co-housing project, please contact SOSEW at aussidi@gmail.com All are welcome to attend the next SOSEW meeting, held at the Beachmere Beach Shak café on Wednesday 8 August at 9.30 am.

Welcome to Helen Pryor, the new Licensee of the Beachmere Post Office. Helen has been operating the Post Office for a couple of months now and it is great to see her smiling face. Helen has had many years experience as a member of the customer service staff at Scenic Rim Council, so this is the perfect fit for her in our community. It took many weeks of training at the GPO in Brisbane, the Caboolture Post Office and hands on with the previous Licensee to gain the knowledge required to operate such a diverse small business. The services offered are many and varied including the usual post, parcels, banking, bill payment and passport photos, but did you know she also can organise translation of documents, TFN applications, Fit for Work, Key Pass Card Identification for those in the community who do not hold a license, Travel Cards, Overseas Currency and she is an agent for Inter Flora. The shop also stocks a diverse range of giftware, stationery and the specials brochures come out once a fortnight. Helen is the sole operator and proves small business is the backbone of any community. Opening hours are: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 11am. The Post Office closes from 12 noon to 1 pm weekdays so Helen can grab a bite to eat. By MJ Donovan

Cranky Lizard Speaks

Letters to the Editor...

July 2018.

Homo Sapiens – Male Sadly, and all too frequently, another young woman has been raped and murdered in a public place, on her way home from her work. Her assailant was a young autistic male, and he has been arrested by the Police. For their own reasons, the media created an emotional firestorm which swirled about this tragedy; effectively swamping sensible public comment, similar to that of the Victorian Police Commissioner – advising women, in general, to be cautious when walking home alone, at night. Riding sidesaddle at this media circus, was a general anti-male hysteria, fanned by various self-interested feminist groups who were determined to condemn all males for having a ‘laissez-faire. ‘ attitude to women in general. Even the Prime Minister became involved pointing out that men need to change their attitude to women – and others pointed out that women should be able to wear what they want, when they want, and walk where they want, regardless of location, time and place!

Cranky Lizard’s ears pricked up at this point; I mean …” Whaaaat ? “ There are some interesting points raised here; they bear a close examination. ‘ Men’s attitude to women. ‘ So what does this mean? Cranky Lizard asserts that a majority of Australian males live out their lives providing for their families, caring for and protecting their wives and children and playing a large part in building and maintaining our community sports programs, our Service Clubs, our Volunteer services such as SES and Bush Fire Brigades. They go to footy matches, drink beer, get raucous, come home and fall asleep on the couch and probably snore! They obey the law, they respect our institutions, and they act in a decent, respectful fashion to the women in their lives: their mothers, their wives, their lovers, their daughters and their female workmates. ‘ Women should be able to wear what they want, when they want and walk where they want, regardless of location, time and place! ‘ Who said they couldn’t? Cranky Lizard knows of no law in this country which prevents women from doing any of these things – clothing, location, time and place are all unfettered by any legislation from any Government level, women are free to walk where they want, wear what they want when they want. There is absolutely nothing to stop them from doing that. Cranky Lizard suggests that these messages, running through our community like headless chooks, are divisive, shallow minded, emotional crap!

Genetics determine that males have an X Chromosome and a Y Chromosome – thus men are stronger and larger in bones and muscles than women – but it does not follow that this physical advantage applies to all men – nor does it follow that this physical advantage transfers into aggressive behaviour towards women by all men. It does not. We know, because we have seen the evidence, and witnessed the fact, that quite often, rapes, murders and other violent crimes are committed by men who are in the Justice System but remain free to roam, rape and murder in the community because they are on ‘ bail ‘. These men are not to be judged against ordinary family men who live in our communities – these men are not reasonable and will never have a place in our communities. It is easy to run scare campaigns in a compliant media, interested not in facts but sensations. It is easy for politically based feminist movements to whip up hate and angst against men to suit their own purposes, but this politically motivated activity does nothing to deal with violent crime against women. Now, this may shock some readers, but violent crime against women is not a new phenomenon. Cranky Lizard mentions Jack the Ripper, the mad bastard in Russia who murdered 65 women over a period of ten years in the early 1900’s – history is studded with many other examples and readers will have their own knowledge of these events. Recently a report paid for taxpayers blamed ‘ colonisation’ of Australia for continuing violence against Aboriginal women! Thankfully this report has been properly condemned by a leading Aboriginal academic, Professor Marcia Langton and a chorus of other leading women in our community. But it is easy to wind up tensions and emotions in the public forums of the nation; this achieves nothing. It neither addresses the base of the problem nor does it make women safer in public places.

by specific groups who, in response to terrible crimes against women, use the media to further their causes which are generally anti-male. Cranky Lizard acknowledges that violence against persons, in some regions of our cities, is more likely than in other parts of our cities – it was ever thus! There is no blame to be attached to any groups or groups of people for this; this is how it is and how it has been. The social forces of demography and economic balance usually apply in these cases, and although the geography may change, the problem does not go away. Excoriating all males for these phenomena lacks common sense.

No words are written in this article which assumes that we accept violence, against anyone – as an inevitable part of our lives. Not so. This article is written to provide a counterpoint to the irrational outbursts

And there are, in our community, violent, men who breach the trust of women and subject them to cruel and abusive actions over many months and years. Such men are cowards and are not worthy of any respect from any member of our society. Social change is taking place on a massive scale in Australia. Governments at all levels struggle to deal with the enormity of the challenges; and, in Cranky Lizard’s opinion Government’s cannot have the answers. We trash our long-standing religions, or they trash themselves, we are subjecting our education system to impossible strains, expecting teachers to be surrogate parents as well as inserting controversial and, frankly, entirely useless, subject matters into the daily curriculum of our Statebased education. Change on this scale alienates many people. This effectively shuts them out of the mainstream of our community and they, in turn, reject the standards of rational behaviour that universally apply. Governments cannot, and never have, been able to legislate happiness. We, all of us, are responsible for our destiny. There is much evidence to support this, and inner city support groups thrive in areas which have been cultural deserts. Rural communities are attracting young people and families back to the bush, with the promise of safer and quieter lives.

Our communities need strong, confident Australia is generally a just as much as they need strong, safe and orderly society, males confident females, and there is room for all to contribute. and citizens can go The siren song of the interest groups can about their daily lives and should be ignored; they have nothing to contribute except angst and suspicion. without fear for their safety or that of their Blaming all men for families. their ‘ bad ‘ attitude is No words are written in this article which simplistic. condones violence, against anyone – either in a public place or in peoples’ homes.

The Super Saturday results are out and there will be no change. Being an ex serviceman with 43 years service in all three arms of Defence as well as a self funded retiree I was smart enough to push aside all of the lefty political garbage that accompanied the finger pointing at both candidates by both parties. However, I was taken back by all of the hoohar over a medal. I had to go and check the names of mine some of which I could not read due to the fact that they are mounted. I knew what they were for by the ribbon colour but not their actual names. Boy, weren’t you suckered in. Labor strategist knew what the reaction would be and they worked it for what it was worth and if you asked them about it today, yesterday’s news, they don’t care. No wonder younger people refer to some in our generation as Silly Old Bastards, you just proved them right once again. Oh, I won’t discuss what will happen to the return on your investments.

We all need to care and watch out for each other, neighbours, the old people down the street, the young people making their way in life, the family next to you – we are all in this together – and, none of us are going to get out of this alive. So we should make the most of it while we have it !!

We Welcome to the month of August numerology forecast beautiful souls. Entering is the independent, innovative and confident 10 energy. Pythagoras, the father of Numerology believed 10 to be the greatest of all numbers. This is not the month for relaxation, it will fizzle with creativity and innovation. Harness these energies and lead the way. It’s time to challenge stagnant thought process and move forward in both thought and life. August is also the month to make the most of precious moments, as change is inevitable. Our lives are a constant cycle of beginnings and endings, the 10 energy is the ending of the cycle. We are all on a different path, therefore the end of the cycle will mean different things for us as individuals. It is vital before moving on to any new cycle to feel a completion or closure of the past. Acknowledge that changes that have

taken place, realise the significance of the past lessons and move on with gratitude, knowing that you are wiser for the experience. Of all the sectors of life, 10 shines the very highest potential on carer, work, creativity. Present that innovation idea, apply for that promotion, be confident. The universe is practically pushing you forward, no possible outcome is off the table. With all the self-consuming energies of this month be aware not to lose you humility. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking ‘it’s your way or the highway”. You very well may find yourself in more than one situation where you feel little tolerance for another’s thoughts, remain considerate. An unexpected loss or disappointment is inevitable in this 10 finishing, end of cycle energy. Remain infused with gratitude, and trust in the wisdom of the universe. There can be no new beginnings without endings. August has two power days, they are the 1st and the 10th, use them well. Remain infused with gratitude, Michelle For your personal Numerology chart email littleGreekgirl@live.com

Ready to buy a camper trailer? PART 2 Continued from issue 26 Last month I touched on looking at your Budget, Research and Camping Shows for info. This month I will talk about

DESIGN By now hopefully you will have made decisions on type of camper — on-road or off-road; soft-floor, hard-floor or poptop — each having its own peculiarities and features. Soft Floor Camper Trailers Some soft floors can take longer to set up but they also have the most storage and potential room for longer stays, which is great if you have kids. They’re lighter and the cheapest to buy. Soft Floors with walk-up staircases and an aisle at the foot of the bed are popular, but few are available in a budget price range as the walkway requires extra engineering and uses more materials. Hard-Floor Camper Trailers Most hard floor models are beyond the means of the budget buyer as the construction and engineering required for the swing-over floor and subsequent tent is expensive. You can pick up some hard floors for less than $20,000, however only thorough research will determine whether it is truly a good buy and of good quality. Hard floors are usually heavier (check the Tare, AGM and Tow Ball Weight) but are quick to set up and pack up. Pop-top camper trailers Pop-tops often have cooking facilities inside and look like entry-level caravans. This suits some people, but they are often heavier and maybe out of the price range of the budget buyer. If the design requires that you pull the beds out of the ends of the trailer, make sure you can access the front bed with the tow vehicle still attached.

TOWING A longer drawbar makes a trailer easier to reverse but requires more care turning corners. A heavy ball weight — the downward weight on the hitch — can stress the vehicle’s towbar. Around 10 per cent of the tare (empty) weight is ideal.

SUSPENSIONS Very important. In a budget camper you’re most likely to be getting leaf springs, and eye-to-eye is best and independent is better . Slipper springs where the back of the springs slide in a

Sport, Fishing, Camping box under the chassis are acceptable for on-road use but not off road. If shock absorbers are fitted make sure they’re in line with axle movement. Round tube axles are suitable only for the lightest on road use. Most heavier Campers have independent suspension. If your trailer weighs more than 750kg fully loaded (you’d be surprised how quickly it adds up) you must have brakes. Electric brakes are best as they give you direct control over the trailer brakes but they require the tow car to have an electronic brake controller fitted, which will set you back around $400 including installation. Over-ride brakes avoid this but clunk as you brake and can overheat on long downhill runs.

interior cupboards or drawers a mess. Tent The tent is vital to any camper trailer and you want it to be straight and smooth when set up. Sags in the awning or roof will accumulate water in the rain. Look at the sewing. You want quality thread which won’t deteriorate in a year or two. Are stitches evenly spaced? Is the thread similar in thickness and appearance to that in high-end camper trailers? Can you see daylight coming through any of the canvas or around the stitching? Small points of light around the stitching are common on new tents and disappear after several applications of water when the thread expands in the holes, but large holes will always be a problem. Does it have a zip-out floor for easy cleaning?

INTERIOR

MATERIALS

Avoid tents which require many spreader bars and complex set-ups,but look for at least an end wall on the awning to protect the kitchen. A high tent with a steep pitch will drain better in the rain and be cooler in the heat. A gable on the awning front will add protection from the elements. If the bed base tilts for access to the interior, try lifting it. If it’s too heavy for you, why have it? Such bed bases should have gas strut assistance. You would like to think your new camper has the best possible workmanship for your dollar, but check to make sure. If you aren’t knowledgeable in any of the following areas ask a friend or employ an expert to cast a critical eye over the rig. Welds Look for clean, smoothly applied welds and take note of any signs of grinding, which is done to correct errors. Look for full welds and not tacked spots on structural components like the drawbar and the chassis. Gussets or supporting pieces in corners or major joins earn a tick of approval. Mark down trailers where the cutting of the metal is rough and untidy. This doesn’t weaken or diminish the durability of the finished product, but it shows a lack of care and pride in the work. Paintwork If the drawbar or chassis isn’t galvanised, look at the paint. Hammertone paint is tougher, powdercoat is better and twopack polyurethane painting is the best. If you just get plain paint make sure it has primer underneath. If this step is skipped, the trailer can look good when new but as it accumulates stone chips you will end up with spots of rust that can quickly start looking shabby. Woodwork If there is wood involved — as there often is — give a tick of approval to screwed and glued joins. Stapled wood joins rarely survive repeated shocks and vibration, and can leave your kitchen and/or

The choice of materials is important. Imported canvas has come a long way and with some brands it’s hard to tell which is better (Import or Australian) Price is the big factor. You will pay $5000 or more for Australian made Canvas. Electrics Are there any electrics involved? If so, what size batteries you get? The higher the number of amp-hours the longer it will last. Also ask about a charger: a smart charger is best. Check the number and type of 12V plugs and lights; you don’t want arid plugs if all your appliances have cigarette lighter type fittings. Where are the power outlets? It’s best to have some near the kitchen as well as some inside the tent. Has the trailer been rigged out with heavy duty wiring. Is their provisions for 240volt? Kitchen What do you get for a kitchen? Pull-out ply kitchens are lighter than steel and can have more drawers, cupboards and fittings for the price since wood is easier to work with, but the edges can look dirty after a while. Is there a sink and/ or a stove? If there is a sink do you get a tap? How much bench space is there for food preparation? Listen to your partner on this matter as the kitchen is usually a shared space and he or she may hold a different opinion. Water and gas What size water tank will you get, if any? 80L should be the minimum, and it should be a heavy wall poly tank or have some sort of stone shield around it to prevent punctures, especially if you want to go off-road. Is the filler point conveniently located? If there is a water tank you will want at least a tap at the kitchen. This will most likely be Electric pump on a quality camper trailer, Is there an external pump to wash your hands after packing up?

Are the gas and water for the kitchen permanently plumbed or do you have to do it each time you set-up? If so, how convenient is it? Do you get a gas bottle(s) or just the rings to hold them? A new bottle will cost you $30-plus. If you don’t get a bottle but have a kitchen that travels inside the body of the camper then make sure you get a properly certified regulator as it is a requirement under the law. Do not accept the sort of regulator you can buy at the hardware store. Stoneguard These are as important on a busy highway as they are off-road, as stones can accumulate anywhere and you don’t need the rear window of your tow car smashed. Spare tyres that double as stoneguards are not acceptable as tyres can cause bouncing stones. Do you get a storage box on the front of the trailer? If so, does the lid have a gas strut to hold it open and is it lockable? Are there any other storage lockers along the side of the trailer?

SETTING AND PACKING UP At a dealer’s premises or at a show have them pack up the trailer for you and set it up. Take note of how long and how many people it takes to put up the tent. Remember, demonstrators are experienced with the product and should be able handle it in a timely manner. As a rule of thumb, a quick set-up for a simple overnighter without any awnings should be achievable in less than 15 minutes. Insurance Also look at the insurance situation for your new camper. There are some trailers which insurers are becoming very wary of, so it won’t hurt to check. Towbar And don’t forget to add into your budget the cost of a towbar on your car if you don’t already have one. Check its suitability if you want to go off-road or tow a trailer with a heavier ball weight. This sounds like an unbelievably long list to keep in mind, but remember going camping with your trailer is supposed to be a pleasant and enjoyable time. There are many manufacturers out there who can easily tick all these boxes so don’t think it’s an impossible task. A little investment in time now may save you grief when you want to be at your most relaxed. Now that you’re ready to buy, Come see us at Coastbound.

July Fishing Report - Bribie Island and Surrounds

TIDE TIMES FOR 16 July - 15 August JULY

AUGUST

There have been a few chilly starts to the day in July. Lots of turtles and pelicans galore, keeping us company while we try our luck fishing. Like most fishing spots, the Passage certainly has times of the year that fish better than others. During the winter months, there should be bream and winter whiting around the estuaries and shallows, tailor and some good snapper. Jack is one of the people saying that there’s plenty of tailor – he’s been catching them every day he goes out. However, it does look like the biggest ones have been a bit slow to come up into the Passage. The last green beacon on the way out of the passage is one good spot to fish for them. The best place to find the tailor right now is out at Cook’s Rocks. Lures and bait have both been working on them. Rod tells me that fishing this month has been better south of the bridge than

Sharyn Stapleton fish of the month on creek to coast caught these in shipping channels off Bribie, Snapper was 82cm sweetlip was 69cm and 4.95kg Australian record record is 5.12kg

most popular snapper spots is just outside the Pacific Harbour canals, at the Ripples, where there have been some good hookups. The bridge is a hot spot, at night and early in the mornings, although it is very hard to fish on a full flowing tide. Fish closer to the island or mainland when the tide is running fast and move into the middle of the bridge as it slows, adjusting the weight as needed. The pylons are covered in

oysters, so be careful with your casts and use strong leader. If you are fishing from the bridge, (which may or may not be legal..) please be thoughtful of other users of the bridge, as well as boaties below. When coffee rock and oyster pieces, empty bottles and cans, and scrapped fishing line have been left on the bridge, they cause inconvenience, puncture tyres, and are an environmental hazard. If you are fishing from a boat, be aware of the underwater cables that cross the Passage a little north and south of the bridge. They are signposted at both ends, to show you where they lie – avoid anchoring there or you will catch your anchor on the cable. Fish are often attracted to the tidal eddies that form behind and in front of the bridge pylons and navigation markers, because they attract bait and offer shelter from the currents. If you position your boat up-current, within a few metres of the structure, you can drop lures from the rod to the bottom and wind them back to the surface. If you’re using weighted bait, cast it out in short lobs.

north. He has been finding plenty of grassy sweetlip there and heaps of sand flathead too, many of them too small to keep. Squid, also, have been around – Rod caught his biggest ever the other day, between the green markers near Sandstone Point. There have also been a few whiptails hanging around the same place, although it’s a bit early for them, really. I’ve heard from Red that there was a BIG school of summer whiting hanging out off Buckley’s Hole earlier this week. They were sitting at 1-2 metre depth and may wait a while, before heading out to go around Bribie and north. It is very early to see big schools of summer whiting, so fishing the beach at Woorim might fire up soon. Luke has been having a bit of luck around the shallow banks of Sandstone Point, using pillies to score some good-sized bream. Going up into the creeks with lures has been good for finding the bigger flathead, he says. From June to October is the real snapper season in the Passage, when the bigger snapper move in. Before the recent westerlies started coming through, the snapper were pretty hungry. One of the

Prawns and lures worked a trick on these flathead

Ken tells me that he has been having a quiet time with crabbing, but this is the off-season, so I guess that’s why. He does think it’s not as good as last July for crabs; he’s been seeing lots of jennies and not a lot else. One crab had been completely sucked out by an octopus, he reckons, so at least it got a feed!

Bribie Bulldogs still on top after 15th round By Ernie Mayne

After round 15 of the AFL season the Bulldogs are on top of the ladder, one game clear of Aspley Hornets, after a total thrashing of Ferny Grove at the Kennel on the 20th July. Bribie kicked 15.16-106 to 1.3-9. Goal scorers were D. Scott, J. Bear 3, B. Camfield 2, and B. Hedley, S. Reimer, T. Watson, C. Jenkins, T. Gilmore, D. McFaul and A. Court 1 goal each. Best players were C. Jenkins, D. Dobson Munday, T. Gilmore, D. Bear, J. Bear and J. Hedley. In round 14 the boys had a tougher game against Coorparoo coming out winners by 20 pts. 8.16-64 to 7.2-44. In round 13 Bribie had the bye. In round 12 the boys lost to Yeronga South Brisbane by 3 pts after a kick after the siren saw the home team take the 4 pts. It was only the Bulldogs second loss for the season. The top four after round 15 is Bribie on 44 pts, Aspley Hornets 40, Jindalee and Yeronga South Brisbane on 36. And on Friday night, round 16, July 27, at Graham Road, 8 pm start, it’s the battle for top spot between the Hornets and the Bulldogs. The remaining games for the boys are against Springwood, away and Ipswich Cats on Saturday, August 11, 2 pm, at home. So far this year the Bulldogs have played fantastic football and in their two losses they have only bean defeated by a minimal margin. GO BULLDOGS and all the best for the finals.

Jet skiers told to steer clear of whales or risk injury and a fine With the whale migration season in full swing, jet skiers and water users are being urged to follow the rules when it comes to approaching whales. Minister for Environment Leeanne Enoch said it’s important that people on jet skis, paddle boards and boats play it safe around whales.

Department of Environment and Science (DES) Manager Southern Wildlife Frank Mills said if you witness somebody going too close to a whale please send the details to DES at wildlife.management@ des.qld.gov.au. “The more information provided – such as photos and video – the better chance we have of taking compliance action if its warranted,” Mr Mills said. “A Sunshine Coast woman was fined $630 for an offence in 2017 after she rode a jet ski within 300 metres of a whale. Members of the public alerted DES and sent us details that helped the investigation.

combination of three numbers followed by three letters, is coming to an end after 40 years in production,” he said.

by Labor that I will keep the pressure on the Palaszczuk Government to ensure they finally deliver lower fuel prices.”

“The current plate series started in 1977 and changed colour back in 2001.

Ms Frecklington said real-time monitoring had saved money for motorists in other states.

“My department has started issuing Y series plates and we expect the Z series will start being issued next year and run into early 2020. “Annual motor vehicle use is increasing in line with population growth and is expected to reach 635,000 sets by 2020. “Transport and Main Roads has been working on a solution for some time and has developed a new combination for the future. “The new plates will feature three numbers followed by two letters and a further number (eg. 456-BZ8). “This format meets regulatory requirements and will be unique to Queensland.” Mr Bailey said security was also a key consideration during design of the new number plates.

“The rules are there to protect our whales, and it’s also a matter of human safety. Put aside the ‘gentle giant’ tag – these are unpredictable animals. You don’t want a creature the size of a city bus crashing down on you or hitting you with its massive flippers or tail, often that are edged in sharp barnacles.”

“A unique directional security mark is one of the design features being considered for inclusion on the new plates,” he said.

Mr Mills said DES staff had been out at boat ramps in recent weeks, talking to water users about whale season safety and handing out ‘share the water’ stickers.

“This feature can be seen during the day and at night and will assist authorities to verify genuine number plates.”

Jet skis and other personal watercrafts are not permitted within 300 metres of whales at any time. The penalty for intentionally moving too close to a whale is an on-the-spot fine of $630.75, or a maximum fine of $20,814.

Bribie Bridge Local Laws.

The Public Health & Local Laws Manager advised Council has clearly identified and enforceable signage on the pedestrian access side of the

Bribie Island Bridge that advises that any fishing, diving or jumping from the bridge is prohibited. Signage appears in multiple locations along the pedestrian walkway, which is only provided on one side of the bridge. Council staff are regularly conducting patrols of this area and identifying and managing any persons seen performing any activities in contravention of this local law requirement

New combination seals Queensland number plate future The Palaszczuk Government has revealed plans for a new combination on the state’s number plates when the current series runs out.

“With the school holidays starting, our coastal waters are expected to be busy with people enjoying Queensland’s mild winter conditions,” Ms Enoch said.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said “the future of Queensland number plates was a hot topic of conversation among number plate enthusiasts.”

“Our waters will also be hosting thousands of 40-tonne humpback whales

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said Queenslanders had once again seen Labor drop the ball on real-time fuel pricing. “I announced real-time fuel price monitoring as an LNP Policy in January and it took until May for Labor to adopt a watered down version of our plan and now two months after they announced a trial, we are yet to see any progress,” Ms Frecklington said. “With the start of school holidays, Queensland motorists are again feeling the pinch from high fuel prices. “Queensland fuel prices hit a four year high earlier this year and Labor are still on the side of the multi-billion dollar fuel companies, not Queensland motorists. “They need to be putting pressure on these fuel companies, not finding excuses for keeping fuel prices high. “I understand the financial pressures Queenslanders are facing and that is why I have backed real-time fuel price monitoring since I became Leader and it was the first policy my Shadow Cabinet adopted. “If I were Premier, this decision would have been taken months ago. “Labor only announced a trial because of the pressure the LNP and motoring groups have applied to this Government. I promise drivers who have been failed

“Based on the experience of motorists in NSW, drivers can save up to $6 a tank of fuel,” Ms Frecklington said. “It has been almost 27 weeks since I committed to real-time price monitoring and we still see no action from Labor.

Caboolture crossroads scores major revamp The Palaszczuk Government has announced the first intersection to receive a major upgrade as part of safety works worth $28.8 million for Caboolture and Morayfield. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the intersection of Industry Drive and Old Gympie Road, on Beerburrum Road, would be the first upgraded, with work taking place this year. “Wider lanes and lane separation will improve safety for turning vehicles at this busy intersection,” Mr Bailey said. “This junction is adjacent to the Beerburrum Rd/Pumicestone Rd intersection, where a major upgrade is currently underway. “When work is complete, traffic flow and pedestrian safety will be greatly improved, especially in the morning and afternoon peaks.” State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said design was underway for a further seven of the seventeen locations along Morayfield and Beerburrum Roads, as part of the $28.8 million Palaszczuk Government works package. “These two busy roads are the spine of the community here in Caboolture and Morayfield,” he said. “As we know, the less time you spend sitting in traffic the more time you have to spend at home, or out with family and friends. “So these road and intersection improvements will make a real difference to people’s lives here in our local area. “Works at the locations we have chosen will include a combination of line marking, new traffic signals, changes to existing signals, pedestrian facilities, removal of hazards, road widening, and new signs.” Design is progressing for the following locations: Morayfield Road • Aquatic Drive to Paradise Road • Paradise Road to Graham Road • Lindsay Road to Oakey Flat Road • Caboolture River Road to Oaklands Street • Elliot Street and Esme Avenue intersection. Beerburrum Road • King Street to McKean Street • Industry Drive and Old Gympie Road intersection. The Morayfield Road-Beerburrum Road safety improvements project will be delivered as part of the Queensland Government’s Targeted Road Safety (TRS) Program. Design and construction will be completed in stages, and feedback will be sought from local stakeholders, on the proposed safety improvements as they are developed. As each design package is completed, the layout will be available on TMR’s projects webpage at www.tmr.qld.gov.au

New Cab boxing building announce a hit Division 3 Councillor Adam Hain has announced council will invest more than $320,000 to construct a new boxing hub in the heart of Centenary Lakes, Caboolture. Moreton Bay Regional Council today awarded the tender for a new Caboolture Boxing Club building at its coordination committee meeting. “Don and Annie [Tindall] and the club have been training some of the Queensland’s best boxers for more than three decades, and their positive impact in and out of the ring has seen them become one of the most sought after gyms to train at,” Cr Hain said. “With their success and the recent success of local boxers like Caboolture’s Rebecca Hawker they’ve now outgrown their current home underneath the rugby league training facility and it means they need a new facility. Construction on the 165m2 building is expected to commence August 2018 and take 14 weeks to complete, weather permitting. Modifications to the existing car parking will also be constructed as part of the build. “With their very own boxing hub, Don will be able to give more local kids the opportunity to participate in sport, keep fit and gain valuable boxing skills.” Caboolture Boxing Club’s Don Tindall said the announcement recognised the hard work of the club, council and the local community to create one of Queensland’s most celebrated boxing organisations. “We have a bunch of stand-up trainers, coaches, boxers and families in our gym, and this announcement is great news for them,” Mr Tindall said. “Having a dedicated space to exercise, train and compete will do wonders for the boxers and our club. “We’ve produced many stand-up athletes in our three decades like ‘Nightmare’ Nik Taumafai, and now Rebecca Hawker and Antonio Futol, and I can’t wait to see where this new chapter takes us.” The tender follows a number of projects recently announced for Caboolture’s largest sports and recreation precinct, including a new lake water pump system and landscaping project with local job seekers. “Centenary Lakes continues to be one of the region’s most popular places for families and large sporting events, and it’s important that we continue to invest in this precinct and ensure it remains vibrant and bustling,” Cr Hain said.

Pumicestone E lectorate News

Electorate Office: Shop 1/43 Benabrow Ave, Bellara l Phone: 3474 2100 l Email: pumicestone@parliament.qld.gov.au The recent announcement of a guaranteed $20 million by the Federal Coalition Government for the upgrade of Bribie Island Road is a real game changer for the Pumicestone Electorate. For too long the State Government has dragged its feet on planning phases for much needed upgrades – with planning works only set to be completed in 2019/2020. This is far too long to wait for design and construction work to begin on a road that is used by an average of 25,000 commuters a day. Bribie Island Road is now known to be one of the region’s worst roads, scattered with 13 speed limit changes along its 19 km stretch, dual to single carriage ways and dangerous intersections like Old Toorbul Point Road making it terrifying for many to navigate. This Federal funding announcement has come at the right time to get the State Government moving on fixing some of the most pressing concerns along the road – no more delays, no more excuses. I was very pleased to help secure this funding after having worked with the Federal Government to achieve this positive outcome for our community. This $20 million will go a long way to making Bribie Island Road a safer journey for all who travel it. You can read more about this funding

25 November 2018 is White Ribbon Day - a day where communities come together to raise awareness and prevent violence against women. On another note, I encourage all community groups in the electorate to jump at the chance of being part of the Community Benefit Funding Program 25th Anniversary Commemorative Grants round. If you have a major capital works, equipment, event or transportation requirement valued from $35,000 to $250,000, give my office a call and we will point you in the right direction to apply via an expression of interest form. There are 11 commemorative grants available and stage 1 expressions of interest close at 11.59pm on 31 August 2018. Let’s make sure our wonderful groups receive a share of this funding.

SENIORS WEEK 2018 Be sure to come visit my Pumicestone Electorate stand at this year’s Bribie Seniors Living Expo – Friday August 24 at Bribie Respite & Support Services, Woorim (9am-2pm). Coinciding with Seniors Week 2018, this expo is a great opportunity to celebrate and discover all that our community has to offer for over-50’s in our electorate. Come say hi as I hand out my Pumicestone Electorate sample-bags, full of handy information on government services, plus a few extra goodies thrown in.

Labor’s waste tax grab confirmed The Palaszczuk Government’s massive waste tax grab on Queensland families and businesses is now confirmed. If you are renting a skip bin to tidy up around the house you would normally be charged $300, but under Labor’s tax grab will now pay up to $600 – double the existing rate. It’ll cost $3,000 more to build a new home because of Labor’s waste and land tax slugs. Every cost Labor heaps onto businesses affects their ability to provide jobs for Queenslanders. Let’s not forget that on top of all their new taxes record water prices, record power prices and record car registration fees under Labor.
