Welcome to issue 26. Last issue in our Fishing report we printed a paragraph about fishing off the Bribie Bridge, I would like to apologize for this paragraph. You cannot fish off the bridge and it is against the law. So please disregard that information. This was an extract with permission from Visit Moreton Bay. I have notified them about this error on their website. This issue is before the Bi Election in Longman on the 28th of July, so again you will see candidates advertising with us. It is important to know that when you vote, vote for your local candidate who you think will do the best job for our community Longman and represent us all in parliament. Unfortunately, our printers Horton Media have now closed their doors, and we have had to find alternative printers for our newspaper. For our Readers and Advertisers there is no change at all and business is usual. ISLAND and Surrounds will continue to provide you a great newspaper full of local community news and columns going into the new financial year. I hope you enjoy your read and if you have any concerns on issues in our community I would love to hear from you.

Dear Editor, There are no confusing roundabouts on Bribie Island for people who know their road rules - only confusing drivers. So-called over-indicating, which David Martin seems to promote, is a major cause of the problems. The only reasonable form of “over-indicating” is the use of left indicators on small roundabouts when one’s speed indicates that one has no intention of turning right. Unfortunately this is required by law. Over-use of right indicators is not only confusing and annoying, but also sometimes dangerous. The only time they should be used is when aiming for an exit road to the right of one’s entry road, or when doing a u-turn. In these circumstances, they should be turned off as soon as practicable. From the point of view of a following driver, a right indicator which is misused could result in the miscreant being caught on the left rear corner, as they fail to move to the right. For a driver entering the opposite side of the roundabout, the risk is that he/she will be tail-ended, when braking unnecessarily hard for someone who does NOT turn right as they indicated. If you have to use a right indicator, think of the others coming towards you who may expect you to cut across their path. Turn it off as soon as you no longer need it.

Harvey Fewings

Warm regards

If we could reduce these instances to the rare occasion when a driver changes his mind at the last minute, this island would be a lot safer.

We’re here for you!

I refer to the letters from Tony Bell and more recently David Martin. Access to and from the island and its near neighbours can be problematical at any time, particularly in adverse weather conditions. When is Bribie Island and its near neighbours going to get the recognition, services and access they deserve? The area is no longer a sleepy backwater the domain of retirees but is being marketed for all the family. Having modern amenities such as the golf course, mooring of boats off the back of your property as well as the full range of schools. Its proximity to rail connections and airport are further features of the area being marketed for future residents. As for the services in the area, a decent modern updated main shopping centre i with a full range of shops is a must. It should include a choice of supermarkets, department stores as well as businesses to suit both men and women. This would negate the need to leave the island to have shopping choices As for access to the area for too long Governments, local, state and federal of both sides of politics have disregarded the growing needs of the area. They cannot agree whether the road access should be three lanes, one lane two lanes dual carriage way or what? For the present population and future needs, the access to the island from Caboolture needs to be all weather dual carriage way at the minimum. As for the final access to the island over the bridge this is a disaster waiting to happen. Any prolonged disruption to the bridge could see a multitude of calamities like medical

We meet our Federal Health Minister, the Honourable Greg Hunt MP

There are a few thoughts that spring to mind when you get the call to meet a politician for a coffee. The most obvious is that of public perception and why our community would want to grab a cuppa and invest time reading about a politician. I must admit that I was a little sceptical but was quietly delighted when I was told that that my subject was Federal Health Minister. I recall attending my children’s school assembly at Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula (Victoria) in about 2002 and listening to the recently elected Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt deliver an energetic and articulate address to the school assembly. As with most parents, I rocked up to the school assembly still digesting the toast and tea and wondering how long this assembly would take – sure enough up popped Greg Hunt to spread the word on strong communities, environment and the importance of being good children for your parents. Without sounding too politically correct, Greg Hunt was as engaging back in 2002 as he is today. The most noticeable feature when you meet Greg Hunt is his welcoming smile and generosity in sharing his views and ideas about life and people. My One-on-One with our Federal Health Minister, Greg Hunt was conducted in a Caboolture Café not long after a press conference where Greg announced an $11M investment for the Bribie and Caboolture Region to support the non for profit organisation, Lives Lived Well with their Detox and Rehabilitation Services and the funding for a new 20-bed residential rehabilitation facility based in Caboolture. I was not here to talk about specific political announcements or become twisted into a need to reflect on the Longman Bi-Election scenario caused by yet another political citizenship debacle. This is a snapshot-story of an Australian Political Servant, a father, a son, a husband and passionate man who has devoted his professional life to serve the community whilst contributing to create a social and environmental landscape that is fair for every Australian. Greg Hunt was born in the mid 1960’s at the Frankston Hospital in Victoria and

spent the first 18 years of his life living on the Mornington Peninsula surrounded by beaches, vineyards and open space. His schooling at the Peninsula School and Greg’s passion for education, debate, sport and family set the scene for his life. A First -Class Honours Law Graduate of Melbourne University, Greg went on to complete a master’s in international Relations at Yale University. Prior to being elected to the Federal Seat of Flinders in 2001, Greg Hunt cut a professional pathway that included legal practice; becoming Associate to the Chief Justice of the Federal Court; Senior Political Advisor to Minister Foreign Affairs and Engagement Manager and specialist in telecommunications, startups, government reform and the banking sector with McKinsey and Co. Greg Hunts achievements include being named a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum, being a runner up in the World Debating Championships and being selected as Australia’s debating captain. Despite Greg’s reluctance to make too much of this special award in Australia, Greg was selected as the inaugural Best Minister in the World at the World Government Summit in 2016.

the capacity to take up Private Health Insurance,” he said. “There are many challenges within our communities dealing with drug and alcohol addiction and unemployment, he said. “As an example, we see these challenges within the community of Caboolture which I have recently visited. The aim of our Government including myself, the Prime Minister and the Candidate for Longman, Trevor Ruthenberg is to provide a sense of practical hope - that is if you can improve employment, you give people the opportunity for a better future. We know that unemployment and mental health have a ‘cause and effect’ relationship,” he said. “If we can support programs such as Lives Lived Well which the Federal Government funded in Caboolture recently – it can change individual lives and that of families – it can lift people and communities to move forward - this is just one practical initiative to support community.”

From what I can tell, there are about five attributes that would benefit anyone entering public life – the willingness to be a servant to your community; the ability to communicate messages with accuracy and passion; a strong set of values; a thick skin and a strong competitive spirit. It is without question that Greg Hunt displays these attributes and works hard to live by his core family values of service, integrity of spirit, and generosity. In his Maiden Parliamentary Speech in February 2002, Greg Hunt said, “I believe that there are five key social imperatives facing Australia over the next 20 years - Building on the past achievements; Broadening the very nature of what education means in Australia; Protecting and preserving our environment; Bridging the divides and reconciling differences; Continue to renew our institutions of governance. Sixteen years on Greg Hunt believes that these social imperatives remain strong and are being advanced everyday to the benefit of our great nation. As the Member for Flinders, Greg Hunt resides on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria with his wife, Paula and his two children aged 8 (boy) and 13 (girl). It was an absolute pleasure to share a coffee with Greg Hunt. Q&A

Since being elected as Federal Minister for Flinders in 2001, Greg Hunt has held numerous government portfolios including Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment; Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs; Shadow Minister for the Environment from 2007-2013; Minister for the Environment between 2013-2016 and Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science 2016. In 2017, Greg was appointed Minister for Health and Sport which has allowed Greg to share his vision to create the best health system in the world. Greg said, “It’s important to research benchmark health systems around the world and be prepared to innovate for change if needed. I was in America recently amongst some extraordinary researchers and doctors who share a view that they would much prefer the Australian Health System over the Nationalised UK or Privatised US models. We have a more balanced universal model with

Government has decreased spending across the Metropolitan North Region is completely incorrect. Greg said, “In the last financial year, the Federal Funding for Metropolitan North (Seat of Longman) area increased by $120M and the Queensland Government State funding has decreased by $20m. These are hard facts based on accurate data. Year on year the Federal Health Support funding across the states has increased.”

Q: As a Minister and Public Figure - How do you manage to nurture family relationships. My three passions in life are - Running / Reading/ Family Family is everything – I will usually speak to family every morning and afternoon via phone /texts and some facetime. I will come home and usually spend time playing on the beach or visiting a family attraction with my family. Often when I come home my boy will engage me in a ferocious, to the death soccer game or AFL game in back yard – I think my boy wants to play for Chelsie one day. Greg Hunt When I talked to Greg about some of the negativity around the health funding arrangements for regionals areas such as Metropolitan North (Seat of Longman), Greg was keen to make the point that any claim by anyone that the Federal

Q: How important is social media to communication? A: I believe that the social platforms are imperative to sharing messages and information. I use both Facebook as more of an interactive tool and twitter to broadcast

messages. Certainly it is not healthy to operate these platforms as your sole communication tool. Q: What sport do you follow? I am a mad Tiger fan (Richmond AFL) – just for the record - Richmond did not win a premiership for 37 years until the year I became Sports Minister. I did play hooker in Rugby at College, but much prefer cricket – I love my cricket. Q: How do you maintain a healthy mind and body? I think that everyone must find the thing that works for them. Running is a daily passion and obsession - it is part of who I am – it keeps me healthy and mentally balanced. If I am at an airport on the phone, I will walk up and down to keep my body active. Q: Can you tell me about your cooking skills? I cook very occasionally - I am not the best cook – we are a three-generation house, so my mother in-law is a Cordon Bleu Cook and my and wife is an amazing cook. It’s just that when I cook, the kids tend to say, “Dad that’s nice but could you do something more constructive.” Q: If you had to choose 2-3 guests over for dinner and a good debate, who would they be? Cunxin Li (Writer) - known for his work on Mao’s Last Dancer – I had the privilege of meeting Li and will certainly have him for dinner. Professor Kathryn North (physician, neurologist and clinical geneticist) Director | Murdoch Children’s Research Institute In your 2002 Maiden Speech you said, “For my father, who served in another chamber in another place, I wish only to live out the values you taught me: service, integrity of spirit, and generosity.” Q: Can you talk about your values and these influence your everyday life? Every day is a test – you are always aspiring to live to your values and you have to be realistic. What really matters to me is to ask myself – Am I working to deliver an outcome for people? The happiest part of my work life is when I can help someone who are trying to help themselves. I will always try to do real things to help those in need.

Labor’s heartless Grey Nomad Tax must go Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington has written to Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk calling on her to immediately scrap Labor’s heartless Grey Nomad Tax. “This is a heartless tax. What makes it worse is that the Premier doesn’t even understand how it works or who she is hurting,” Ms Frecklington said. “Annastacia Palaszczuk is so out of touch she is still claiming her vehicle tax will only hit ‘luxurious’ motorhomes* but her tax doesn’t affect vehicles over 4.5 tonnes so the top end of town actually escapes scot free in her tax grab. “Annastacia Palaszczuk’s vehicle tax will add thousands of dollars to the cost of a campervan or motorhome under 4.5 tonnes but won’t cost people who buy big motorhomes a cent in extra tax. “These aren’t the mega-rich Labor is hurting, these are normal Queenslanders who have worked hard all their lives, paid their taxes and now Annastacia Palaszczuk wants them to pay more. “Many of these people have worked hard their whole lives to afford a motorhome or have sold their house to fund the purchase. Labor is taxing people’s dreams.”

Ms Frecklington said the tax had been rammed through without any consultation. “Labor slipped this sneaky tax through hoping no one would notice,” she said. “Industry groups like the Caravanning Queensland were ignored, as were the thousands of Queenslanders who’ll be slugged when they go to buy their dream vehicle. “Many of the motorhomes and campervans that will be taxed are manufactured in Queensland, while the vehicles over 4.5 tonnes that won’t be hit with extra tax are made overseas. “This is an ill-conceived tax that will hurt grey nomads and Queensland jobs.

Beachmere Community Bank Meeting Offers Great Opportunities

Locals attend an information night for Bendigo Bank at Beachmere

Beachmere Community Bank Steering Committee held an Information Night recently to update the community on the progress of opening its very own Community Bank. Secretary of the Committee, Glenda Sinclair opened the evening introducing the other members of the Steering Committee and handed over to Malcolm Frizzell who has been with the Bendigo bank for 19 years. Fifteen of those years he has been assisting communities like Beachmere to open Community Banks. Malcolm said he understands the importance of small communities and loves helping them take control of their own financial destiny. He gave an interesting overview of how

a Community Bank operates and the opportunities it could bring to Beachmere. Examples of other towns across Queensland and Australia who had benefited from such an initiative proved of great interest to those attending. The Beachmere Community Bank are over one quarter of the way to meeting the pledges required. No funds are required at this stage, just an indication of support. Beachmere lioness garage sale “a huge success”

Simone Wilson MP says Queensland Government Caught Red-Handed Short-Changing Pumicestone

The Lioness Club of Beachmere held their garage sale this weekend at the home of one of stalwarts of the Club. Di Newell the Lioness Secretary/treasurer has been affiliated with the group for over 15 years and is “nearly” a local to Beachmere after living there for 25 years. Di and her husband, also a Lion, have a strong commitment to the community and supporting those in need. I bought a beautiful scarf from Rosanna who was manning the counter. She became a member of the Lioness Club when she arrived in Beachmere four years ago. Rosanna wanted to “give back” to her local area and belives it’s a fantastic way to meet people.

The Queensland Government has been called out for short-changing Pumicestone residents by whopping $1 million on planning works for the upgrade to Bribie Island Road. Rosanna and Di Newell at the recent Beachmere Lioness garage sale.

“The Minister must detail where this lost funding has gone and in doing so, he must also explain why this planning project has been pushed out by another year to be finalised in 2020”, Ms Wilson said.

There was a multitude of goods for sale from clothing, bric-a-brac, electrical and even a dishwasher. All the goods for sale are donated by the community and are stored in a container. When the container fills up they have a garage sale. This happens two to three times a year, so look out for the notice boards. All proceeds are used to support the Beachmere community. They are currently supporting the school.

Ms Wilson said that these cuts were just the icing on the cake for Pumicestone residents, where other vital road upgrades, including Beachmere Road, were completely ignored in this year’s budget. “Whether it’s urgently upgrading

The garage sale was well attended by the local community and Di thought it was a fantastic success. Their next endeavour will be the Lioness Spring Fair to be held at Clayton Park. Stall holders are welcome to contact the Lioness Club for details or check out their Facebook page, Beachmere Lioness Club. Story and pictures by MJ Donovan

Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, said the Minister for Main Roads must immediately explain to local residents where the money has gone.

Some of the stalls on the day

Beachmere Road, the intersection of Old Toorbul Point Road and Bribie Island Road or installing much-needed traffic signals at the intersection of Spinnaker Drive and Bribie Island Road, this Premier has disregarded the taxpayers and residents of Pumicestone altogether.” Ms Wilson said it was beyond belief that the Premier would hand-select a Labor candidate for the last election who made upgrading local road infrastructure his number one priority, and then choose to wash her hands of it when it came to allocating Pumicestone its fair share in this year’s budget. “At the last election the Premier handpicked Labor’s Michael Hoogwaerts to run for Pumicestone and in doing so she endorsed his publically stated “top priority” of upgrading our local road infrastructure. “So I ask, will Mr Hoogwaerts join me in condemning this Premier and her government for so blatantly failing Pumicestone residents?” “Will Mr Hoogwaerts be true to his word and now stand up to the Premier for improvements to our road infrastructure?” Ms Wilson said that with Tuesday’s budget failure for Pumicestone she is determined to not let this go. “I’ll continue to stand up and fight for Pumicestone so that we get the road upgrades that we so urgently need and deserve”.

Calling a Global Truce

By Amelia Strazdins

In a modern society, multiculturalism is found throughout the word. Multiple people and countries embrace different cultural traditions and ways of life. This way of sharing different experiences, ethnicities and stories brings people closer together. On the 30th of July, international friendship is celebrated throughout various countries. This originated as a day intended to celebrate and appreciate friendships but now also acknowledges more modern friendships that were being formed over the internet and social media. Its main purpose is to help reduce stigma around different beliefs and encourage positivity no matter another person’s race or religion. In today’s society it is extremely important to recognise the actions and movements that can be achieved when working together and the amazing

outcomes those can have. This day also promotes equality, which even today is still a message that needs to be spread. Organisations such as the UN and other pro-change companies support the masses of empowering people arguing for rights and over all a better world. One only needs to look at the recent marches and campaigns fighting for equality, to see that even in more difficult times, people ban together, and form

friendships based on their own beliefs and perspectives. These new friendships and perspectives allow for opportunities which can further open a person’s eyes to the world. International friendship also makes a stand to abolish another prevalent issue in society, bullying. With such support around issues of bullying, intentionally recognised days only act as another platform that allows for people to spread their message. Having copious amounts of support on such widespread

problems further encourages the need to change the current status quo. Embracing the differences that make an individual unique allows the world to see what a person brings may bring not only to their lives but also others. So many problems have been resolved though words and understanding, and despite some of the current problem not being solved that easily- a world where more people accept and have empathy for others is providing a step in the right direction. It only takes two seconds out of a person’s day to say thank you, good morning or to give another person a compliment and although it may not much to you, it may not only make another’s day but encourage them to do the same. Talking about the problems in society, with new people and bringing positivity to another life, is a simple act that will make a change, even if it’s small. It’s time to call a global truce, stop spreading the negativity that the world seems captivated by and start talking to others about what we, together, can do to improve the world and hopefully leave it a little better than we found it.

HEALTH BENEFITS of LIFELONG LEARNING Barry Clark- Public Relations- Bribie Island U3A

THE GLOBAL SPREAD OF U3A Last month three of us attended a Conference of U3A Network Queensland held this year at Redcliffe. This is annual event attended by representatives of all U3A organisations throughout Queensland. There are currently 32 U3As throughout Queensland with total membership of over 22,000, and the number is rapidly growing. There are now 230 U3As throughout Australia with over 100,000 members, and all Australian U3As are autonomous and managed by volunteer members. . The University of the Third Age movement began in France back in 1972 when Universities were required to provide a range of low cost, no exam courses for Seniors. The concept quickly spread throughout Europe, North America and eventually to Australia in 1984.

Community RESEARCH REVEALS THE BENEFITS OF U3A At the Conference I spoke with Dr Martin Bridgstock, Committee member of Brisbane U3A, a well-qualified retired academic researcher from Griffith University who has recently completed a paper titled “The Impact of Universities of the Third Age upon the Health and Welfare of their Membership” The overall conclusion of his extensive research is that activities conducted at U3As are strongly beneficial to the physical, mental and cognitive health and wellbeing of their members. To investigate this question he reviewed hundreds of books and research papers and the results emerge very clearly from the evidence.

Bribie Island U3A started 25 years ago and now has over 1700 registered members and conducts some 150 classes a week. Speaking with numerous other U3A representatives at the recent Conference it is clear that Bribie Island U3A is amongst the very best.

upon cognitive functions. Studying courses helped stave off mental decline and promoted wellbeing. Even people undertaking physical activity, after testing, turned out to be appreciably better on cognitive measures than those who took no such exercise. • In addition, it is clear that social linkages play a substantial part in promoting health in older people. One study estimates the value of social linkages as being roughly equal to the benefits of stopping smoking. • The conclusion is that the activities promoted by Universities of the Third Age are strongly beneficial to the physical health and the cognitive health and wellbeing of their members.

Appreciating what Universities of the Third Age (U3As) actually do, as their name suggests, they are concerned with offering educational courses and activities to older people. Two points are of critical importance. First, these courses do not involve offering any qualification: they are taken because of the interests of the students. Second, in Australia, there is an extremely strong volunteer ethos in U3As. There are no paid positions of any kind, and the course tutors do not receive any remuneration, and all management and administration is done by unpaid volunteers. Certain activities are common to all U3A organisations, though details may vary from one to another. The courses themselves vary widely and some may be indistinguishable from social activities, such as cards and craft work, while others are intellectually demanding, such as Languages and Computers. In addition, some courses have a substantial physical component, such as Dancing, Table Tennis or Yoga.

Australia followed the British model which did not rely on University facilities and Professors, but utilised volunteer members with appropriate skills and life experiences to conduct classes in various venues. In UK there are now over 1000 U3As with over 400,000 members, and U3A now operates in over 30 countries around the world.

islandandsurrounds.com.au 2018 - Issue 26

ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT BRINGS PERSONAL REWARDS Dr Bridgstocks extensive research work can be summarised as follows; • There are many research papers which examine U3A members: in general they record a high level of satisfaction, and also find that members compare well to non-members in terms of cognitive skills and general health. • However, these studies do not show that U3A membership causes these attributes. It is possible that intelligent, healthy people join U3A and thereby make the statistics look good. • The logical step is to find studies of older people which involve experiences similar to those offered by U3As: where these use experimental methods, we can examine them as evidence bearing upon the benefits of U3A membership. • U3As appear to offer their membership three kinds of valuable experience: they offer a huge range of courses, the possibility for some form of physical exercise, and the possibility of social links and interactions. • About 60 research papers were located relevant to these three types of experience. The most startling result was that all three had direct bearing

“U3A Bribie President Greg Sibthorpe (R) and Treasurer Ian Corin at Queensland Conference.

THE SUCCESS OF BRIBIE U3A. Bribie Island U3A demonstrates that our local Community is very “participative” with many people gaining significant benefits from being a volunteer or tutor, and are enthusiastically involved in the activity of their chosen classes. Many of our members attend more than one class each week as well as actively participating in other volunteer task at U3A and in other local organisations. The future of U3A is secure, as long as people continue to offer themselves as Volunteers and Tutors to increase the range of classes on offer, or conduct oneoff presentations as a way of introducing members to new topics of interest. Bribie Island U3A may soon be reaching capacity in terms of classroom space and hours of teaching. The next step could be to extend the hours or utilise additional venues, or even to start a new U3A in a nearby community such as Ningi or Sandstone Point. This would require a few appropriate people to offer themselves as the leaders of such an initiative.

Tougher penalties for driving offences leading to death or serious injury The Palaszczuk Government has passed new laws in Parliament last month increasing maximum penalties for some driving offences which result in death or grievous bodily harm. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the Palaszczuk Government introduced the new laws following a review of existing maximum penalties. “Every life lost on Queensland roads is a tragedy and community concern has been heightened understandably following a number of incidents where Queenslanders have lost loved ones at the hands of careless or dangerous drivers,” Mr Bailey said. “These incidents are tragic and I extend my sincere sympathies to everyone affected by them. “After thorough consultation with stakeholders, including a number of families who have lost loved ones in road crashes, the Palaszczuk Government has passed legislation to significantly increase the penalties for certain driving offences resulting in death or grievous bodily harm.” Mr Bailey said the new laws were in line with recommendations handed down by the State Coroner as a result of the Inquest into the death of Audrey Ann Dow. “I want to thank Audrey’s family and many other families who during their time of grief brought about a campaign for change to help other families from being in the tragic circumstances they found themselves”, Mr Bailey said. “I am also extremely thankful that they took the time to meet with me to discuss these proposed legislative changes. “I would also like to acknowledge the work of the Member for Burnett in highlighting how important these changes are to the community.” The changes include two new offences of careless driving causing death or grievous bodily harm and careless driving causing death or grievous bodily harm while unlicensed. Mandatory minimum licence disqualification periods will also be applied to these new offences. Careless Driving • Current max penalty - $5,046 or 6 months imprisonment (3 demerit points). No minimum licence disqualification period. New Offences - Careless Driving causing death or GBH • New max penalty - $10,092 or 12 months imprisonment (3 demerit points) + minimum licence disqualification period of at least 6 months. • New max penalty (with circumstances of aggravation - unlicensed) - $20, 184 or 2 years imprisonment (3 demerit points) + minimum licence disqualification of at least 6 months. Dangerous Driving causing death or GBH • Current max penalty - 10 years imprisonment + minimum licence disqualification period 6 months • New max penalty 10years imprisonment + minimum licence disqualification period of at least 12 months • Current max penalty (with circumstances of aggravation) - 14 years imprisonment + minimum licence disqualification period 6 months • New max penalty (with circumstances of aggravation) -14 years imprisonment + minimum licence disqualification period of at least 12 months.

YOU CAN BE THE JUDGE WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR COMMENTS belinda@islandandsurrounds.com.au

Stop price shocks with fairer SEQ water bill SEQ residents will see fairer, more consistent water prices for the next three years following recommendations from the Queensland Competition Authority. Minister for Natural Resources Mines and Energy, Dr Anthony Lynham has written to all SEQ councils advising them of the price of bulk water for the next three years. “Our investment in bulk water infrastructure as a result of the millennium drought provides South East Queensland with long-term water security and resilience against future droughts and floods. “Last year the independent QCA was asked to review Seqwater’s proposed bulk water costs and to recommend prices for bulk water for the next three years. “The QCA recommended two price path options and after carefully considering their report, the bulk water supply code, and stakeholder submissions, I have decided to implement the smoothed pricing option from 1 July 2018.

Eligibility requirements and terms and conditions for the SEQ water subsidy can be found at https://www.qld.gov.au/ community/cost-of-living-support/watersubsidy. The final report, including recommended SEQ bulk water process, was published on the www.qca.org.au on 9 April 2018.

Labor used State of Origin to cover its water torture on SEQ Southeast Queenslanders will be slugged with water price increases between $50 and $90 over the next three years. Liberal National Party Leader Deb Frecklington said Annastacia Palaszczuk had used the cover of State of Origin to drop this ‘unQueensland’ announcement.

“Under this price path, price increases are set over three years with all council areas reaching the common price of $3.12 per kilolitre on 1 July 2020. “The QCA review also found significant efficiencies in Seqwater’s proposed bulk water cost, with the savings directly benefiting customers.

“Just like electricity prices, this Labor Government is delivering price hikes in basic amenities that will hit every household in SEQ.

“Reducing cost of living pressures is always front of mind for the Palaszczuk Government, which is why I have chosen the price path that provides the most certainty and limits the potential impacts on customers,” Dr Lynham said.

“How are Queensland businesses and families meant to get ahead if the most basic of government services are costing more and more every year?

•

Sunshine Coast and Noosa residents, who have not yet reached the common price, will see the bulk water component of their total water bill increase approximately 6 per cent per year or approximately $27 per year for an average household - until June 2021

•

Redland residents, who have not yet reached the common price, will see the bulk water component of their total water bill increase approximately 7.3 per cent or approximately $30 per year for an average household.

•

All other SEQ councils will see bills increase by 3.5 per cent per year until June 30 2021 - approximately $16 per year for an average household.

The Sunshine Coast and Noosa and Redlands residents were at lower price levels and had smaller price increases on the previous price path. The higher increases these areas are now facing will see them catch up to the common price. The Queensland Government provides eligible pensioners a subsidy of up to $120 each year off the cost of water access and usage charges for properties in South East Queensland.

Un-Happy Queensland Day for Pumicestone Water Bills Labor will reach further into the pockets of Pumicestone residents with confirmation local water bills for the Moreton Bay region will increase by a further $48 over the next three years. Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, said the shameful announcement by Annastacia Palaszczuk this week showed complete contempt for local residents already struggling with the increasing cost of living. “The Labor Government had been sitting on this decision for weeks, biding its time and choosing of all days Wednesday 6th of June – not only Game One of State of Origin but also Queensland Day – to announce this price slug. “How much more cowardly and ‘unQueensland’ can you get!” Ms Wilson said Labor had a chance to intervene and stop the price increase,

“Labor has failed Queenslanders. Annastacia Palaszczuk should have intervened and stopped the price increases. Southeast Queenslanders will now pay 3 to 5 times the rate of inflation on their water bills,” Ms Frecklington said. “Before the last election Annastacia Palaszczuk promised Queenslanders their water bills wouldn’t increase. Today we see that promise broken in 11 affected local councils.

Under the 2018 bulk water prices:

islandandsurrounds.com.au 2018 - Issue 26

“It’s the same old Labor – Queenslanders end up paying more because of their incompetence and lack of proper planning. “Queenslanders are still paying the price for Labor’s multi-billion dollar water grid fail that saw pipes built without dams and dams built without pipes. “Labor’s legacy was almost a 400% increase in bulk water prices over 10 years. “Recently the LNP moved a motion in Parliament calling on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to rule out accepting the Queensland Competition Authority’s recommendation for an increase in water prices. “Labor did not support saving Queenslanders money then and it has failed again today.” Over the next 3 years, residents in Southeast Queensland will be paying on average $50 to $90 more in bulk water charges. • In Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, Scenic Rim and Somerset - $48 more over 3 years. • On the Sunshine Coast and Noosa $80 more over 3 years • In Redlands – $89 more over 3 years

but instead chose to reject the LNP’s motion in Parliament to rule out charging residents more for their water. “Last month I stood up in Parliament and joined my colleagues in calling on this Labor Government to stop slugging residents more and more for the everyday necessities such as rego, electricity and now water. “Sadly our pleas were totally ignored,” Ms Wilson said. Ms Wilson said this was further evidence of Queenslanders paying more because of Labor incompetence and poor planning. “Yet again Queenslanders are paying the price for Labor’s multi-billion dollar water grid fail and their legacy of an almost 400% increase in bulk water prices over 10 years. “Pumicestone residents, particularly those on fixed incomes, deserve better and I’ll continue to stand up and fight Labor’s cost of living pressures.” Ms Wilson said.

The Truth Moreton Bay

SEEN AROUND

on our streets, what is moving them on going to achieve? I’m proud that our community brings serious matters like this to my attention and yes I will arrange meetings with charitable organisations in Moreton Bay to seek solutions and get answers to the problem of the homeless if I’m elected to Mayor, how can I not, this is just so sad seeing our fellow Australians living like this.

With Eric Shields, your candidate for Mayor of Moreton Bay.

The Homeless in Moreton Bay This was a post I did on my Facebook page, The Truth – Moreton Bay on Thursday 21st June 2018 and is one of the reasons I am now running for Mayor. I’ve also said before that I am a people’s person and this matter of my fellow Australians sleeping on the streets is to me a matter of great concern, as it is to many others. “I woke this this post that was brought to my attention this morning.

Quote from The Breakfast Club Redcliffe,

This is The Breakfast Club of Redcliffe doing a wonderful job for the homeless.

“Please put yourself in their shoes.... they are part of our community. Those in power need to show some compassion and kindness. They need a helping hand not an order to move on. And why the extreme show of force...was that absolutely necessary? Come and talk to us....we know these people. A sad night on the streets of Redcliffe tonight.” I think this post from The Breakfast Cub speaks for itself and I also find the actions from the MBRC rangers very concerning that, “ And why the extreme show of force...was that absolutely necessary? Come and talk to us....we know these people. A sad night on the streets of Redcliffe tonight.” Surely there must be a better way of handling this problem of the homeless

It’s hard for any compassionate person to accept the fact that some people are not capable of looking after themselves, but I’m afraid to say that this is “The Truth”. I’ve been following a few of the charitable organisations in The Moreton Bay area seeing the good work that they do and I’ve given special attention to the fine work being done by The Breakfast Cub in Redcliffe and the above quote was taken from their Facebook page, “Please put yourself in their shoes....they are part of our community. Those in power need to show some compassion and kindness”. This moved me like you can’t believe and yes if I am elected I will do something about this. There are so many things important matters I have now committed myself to doing and changing if elected to Mayor and I can assure all residents of Moreton Bay that this will be a priority with me and that is helping the homeless and also getting advice and ideas from all the charitable organisations in the region who do such a wonderful job to address this serious problem of the homeless.

ACCIDENTAL INSPIRATIONS It’s one of “those” days. You know the one. The one where you half fall out of bed and stub your toe on the corner bed post. You mutter death curses at anything or anyone who comes into view as you limp painfully towards the shower only to discover, once you are standing under the water doing an impression of a drowned old English sheepdog, that the conditioner has run out and you know you will now spend the day looking like someone who stuck their finger in a light socket. After convincing yourself it can’t possibly get any worse your favourite jeans will only get to your thighs before becoming an immoveable object sent to make you feel fat, frumpy and frustrated. Everyone has them, yes E.V.E.R.Y.O.N.E! I certainly have days when I am grateful that my uniform consists of streeeettttccchhy lycra that is definitely required to stretch further on some days than on others. Yes I know lycra can be a cruel unforgiving fabric but it can also be a magical cloth sewn by angels. Bulginess is one of the seven wonders of the female world. We sit and wonder why the pants that fitted us yesterday with tailored perfection will not even slide past our thighs today. We wonder why we suddenly look 7 months pregnant after eating a food that we love, but our husbands don’t bloat at all. We wonder why we feel wonderful one day and then so dismal the next that all we want is to sit in our dressing gown inhaling chocolate because we just realised that our favourite rock star is now 73! It’s hard on those bulgy dismal wrinkly days to find a reason to smile. Your mojo

has packed it’s bags and is hiding in a paperbag beneath your fridge and you think to yourself “Why bother, I look and feel terrible but no one notices anyway” so you leave your smile wilting on your dressing table and drag yourself out the front door trying your best not to make eye contact with the whole world. Then the weirdest thing happens, someone tells you (and because you are having a terrible bulging-in-all-thewrong-places day you’re convinced that they obviously have little or no eyesight) how great you always look and how they love to see you because “You always look so happy, upbeat and healthy. I always think how great it must be to be so positive and feel as good as you do”. You glance over your shoulder to see who on earth they are talking to and then suddenly realise it’s YOU! And with those few magical words your smile attaches itself to your face and your bulginess disappears. You may never know what an inspiration you are to others, but I bet there is at least one person who admires you for being you and doing what you do. You may never realise that when you go for your walks there is someone who sees you and thinks “I want to be that disciplined, I want to be like them.” Little do they know that you have dragged and grumbled your way down the street, never knowing that you have inspired them to change their life. Our clients are always telling us that they come along to us so they can make changes to their lives but discover

that they are changing the lives of other people just as much as their own. Their families see the yummy foods they eat and want to eat like that too. Friends and relations watch them become happier and fitter and it inspires them to change their fitness habits too. It’s a ripple effect that can have a huge impact on families and in the end whole communities. I don’t think anyone sets out to become inspirational, I believe that people just want to become healthier and more confident, or maybe it’s about achieving a personal goal or reaching for a dream, but what happens along the way is they accomplish things that help others realise that they too can achieve anything they put their minds to. One of our lovely ladies is spending this weekend walking 55kms nonstop through bush and over hills to raise money for charity. She is certainly an inspiration for me. We love to see our clients changing their lives. We get to watch “bad knees” or “dodgy backs” become fit enough to climb mountains or walk 35km in a day, just because they now can, and certainly not to be an inspiration, but when they do these things, other people with similar health issues realise that they too can change their health and fitness. They come along for a chat and tell us about the inspirational people they have read about and I’m always very proud of our clients when it is one of them. So if you have a fitness dream why not reach for it, because even on days when your lycra shows all the lumpy bits and your hair is having a hissy fit you are one step closer to your dream and you are inspiring another person to achieve their dream too.

Art as a stressbuster

Stress is a common factor in many people’s lives currently. Whether it be keeping up with the fast paced society we have now created, the pressures of work, family, over commitments, trying to fit too much in, health conditions, or traumatic life events, a lot of us are impacted by stress in some level. It is learning to deal with our stress than can help prevent it having a further impact on our life, not only on our mental health but eventually also our physical health. We know of many ways to help relieve our stress and as naturopaths we can address nutrient deficiencies, and prescribe supplements and herbal medicine and give dietary and lifestyle advise. One effective form of stress relieving therapy commonly overlooked is art. Creating art in its many forms can act as a stressbuster in many ways. Research has shown that is lowers cortisol, the stress hormone. Focussing on the process of art can redirect your focus from your everyday stressors, and can even provide

Deb delivers plan to reduce waiting lists at Queensland hospitals

Helping to find balance with...

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington has announced the LNP will slash waiting lists and elective surgery wait times in Queensland Hospitals by partnering with the private sector. “Our emergency department wait times are blowing out, with almost one-third of all patients not being seen within clinically recommended time frames,” Ms Frecklington said. “Ambulance ramping is back in our hospitals with a fifth of all patients, waiting in the back of an ambulance for more than 30 minutes.

“The LNP introduced the wait time guarantee when we were in Government and waiting lists were slashed, elective surgery was completed in recommended timeframes and Queenslanders had faith in their health system. “The people of Queensland deserve a world-class health system and the LNP will continue to fight to deliver the services needed.” LNP Shadow Health Minister Ros Bates said the LNP would invest in Queenslanders Health. “Lazy Labor have wasted the last three years and we have a health system in crisis,” Ms Bates said. “As a registered nurse I understand that our hard-working nurses, doctors and paramedics need more assistance to improve wait times and targeted resources to provide better health services for Queenslanders. “Our plan to cut wait times is all part of our plan to improve frontline health services in Queensland.”

“Queenslanders waiting for an elective surgery are now waiting for 50 days, compared to 28 days under the former LNP Government.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister hands over new vehicle to Bribie Island firefighters

Goodwin Drive Family Medical Centre welcomes Dr Ken Stark

Bribie Island firefighters will be better equipped to save lives after receiving a $540,000 replacement firefighting vehicle, Fire and Emergency Services Craig Crawford said today (Tuesday).

MBBS, LLB(Hons), FRACGP

Mr Crawford officially handed over the new Type 2 CAFS appliance to the Bribie Island Fire and Rescue Station.

Dr Stark has been a GP for over 30 years, graduating from the University of Queensland in 1988. He has practiced medicine in Emerald,

During his visit to the Station, Mr Crawford outlined how the vehicle would be utilised by crews dealing with crash rescues, grass and wild fires and structural blazes. “The Palaszczuk Government – and QFES – is delivering on its commitment to community safety, so it’s vital frontline firefighters and volunteers have access to state-of-the-art equipment,” Mr Crawford said. “This vehicle will allow firefighters to

have immediate access to new breathing apparatus/HAZMAT equipment and an improved level road crash rescue capability, potentially saving many lives. “We know that in an emergency every minute counts, which is why this new vehicle has the capability of both technical rescue and command and control.” Since July 2017, the Bribie Island Fire and Rescue Station has provided primary responses to 182 incidents, as well as providing back up to surrounding stations. Mr Crawford said the appliance featured on-board water and foam supplies – meaning it can deliver water and safe Class A Foam at emergencies. He said it was also fitted with Compressed Air Foam, that can be propelled further than water, sticking to surfaces to supress oxygen, fuel and heat to “deal with especially difficult situations”. “Having these new capabilities is future proofing our fire and rescue capacity to keep pace with the growing needs of the community,” Mr Crawford said. “QFES staff often put their lives at risk in service for our community and I am proud that we can support them in doing the great work they do.”

Bribie Respite and support services holds first open day of many

Service Manager Joanne Allison-Schouw Last week Bribie Respite and Support Services & Support Services held its first open day to showcase its new and extended services in disability and dementia care to the local community. Thursday was the first open day of many as Bribie Respite plans to open its doors to everyone on the island every Monday from now on (10am-3pm) in order to showcase its programs, staff and its plans for the future. Bribie Respite and Support Services has been looking after the community for 33 years. Its services have become a lifeline to the families and carers of older people with frailty, people recovering from illness, people suffering with dementia and (younger) people with a disability. Today, however, more than 30% of the population of Bribie Island is over 65 years old and a large number of Bribie residents are now caring full-time for their ageing loved ones or for people with disabilities. To continue to support the community – both now and into the future- Bribie Respite has been extending the breadth and depth of its services. This year it has opened a new and specialised Learning Centre for Disabled clients and it is also now running a well-researched and tailored program for clients with dementia. Next year it will offer Cottage Respite to provide overnight care for local people – a service residents and carers on the island badly need. Former state MP Trevor Ruthenberg, Member for the Liberal National Party and candidate for Longman Bi Let me know what you think and write a letter to the editor. There will be more prosecutors in the courts and the Crime and Corruption Commission will be better placed to process digital evidence on a 24-7 basis, as a result of the Palaszczuk Government State Budget 2018-19 announced yesterday. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the Justice portfolio budget also included extension of the specialist Domestic and Family Violence Court in Townsville, funding for the introduction of a “No Card, No Start” policy for Blue Cards, and resources to tackle cyber bullying. “The safety of our community is my number one priority,” Mrs D’Ath said. “This budget delivers for Queensland, committing to investigating crime in all its forms, delivering justice, and supporting victims of crime. “It also builds on our commitment to plan for the future, providing efficient justice and court services for the people of Queensland.” Strengthening criminal justice “We’ve provided $5 million in 2018-19 to fund 30 staff in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Trevor has said that, if elected in the Longman by-election, he will fully support Bribie Respite’s plans for its future. Trevor is CEO of Mosaic Foundation, a new not-for profit that raises money for, and supports, other charities. Four years ago, as Chair of the Health and Community Services Committee, he presided over a report on the Disability Services and he understands best practice in the sector. Locally, the centre is unique in its dayrespite format and in its warm and loving atmosphere - so different from many, larger organisations. Bribie Respite works hard to make its services as convenient as possible for working carers and the ‘sandwich generation’, divided between caring for parents and children. The centre offers its clients time to relax in a social setting and enjoy a range of fun and therapeutic activities. The program for older people offers group games such as bowls, Wii golf and dance as well as opportunities for crafts and conversation. The program for adults with a disability teaches life skills, maths, literacy, art and craft as well as social skills. While their loved ones enjoy the services and the company at Bribie Respite, carers have valuable time to rest or to get out and about.

Learning Centre Recently Bribie Respite and Support Services opened a specialised Learning Centre for young adults with disability and appointed a specialist education teacher with many years’ experience. With the help of trained staff and volunteers they run a program which teaches important self-care and social skills to people under 65 with either intellectual or physical disability. They find that these skills not only allow people to become more independent but they also have a huge impact on their self-esteem. The Learning Centre is an important place for these young adults as they develop friendships and learn new skills and hobbies. Please read the case studies below for evidence of how people have been benefitting from the Learning Centre which runs the following programs:

Bribie Respite and Support Services is now offering a tailored program of support for relatives with dementia (at any stage). Palaszczuk Government Says Budget boosts justice resources Mrs D’Ath said the Government was also extending the Townsville Specialist Domestic and Family Violence (DFV) Court and associated Mount Isa and Palm Island circuit court. “Tackling domestic and family violence remains one of the State Government’s highest priorities so there’s a total of $8.1 million across relevant agencies to expand the Townsville, Mount Isa and Palm Island DFV courts to deal with criminal DFV matters as well as civil matters,” Mrs D’Ath said. “We’ve also allocated $9.1 million to make the successful Murri Courts permanent across Queensland and for the expansion of Court Link services to Southport, Mount Isa and Ipswich. “The Queensland Sentencing Advisory Council will receive $6.9 million to continue researching the effectiveness of sentencing practices in reducing crime, including the current review of the State’s child homicide laws. “There is also $258,000 to assist with the finalisation of the Dreamworld coronial

“Funding of $910,000 will go to the Restorative Justice Program in Aurukun which is helping to improve community safety by enabling them to conduct local mediations.” Enhancing justice agencies “It’s vital our justice agencies can keep pace with the changing technological and social landscape,” Mrs D’Ath said. “The 2018-19 Budget includes $16.3 million for the Crime and Corruption Commission to enhance its information security platform and deliver digital investigative services. “We’ve also allocated $2.5 million to boost staff at the Office of the Public Guardian and Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal to meet demands arising from the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. “The Palaszczuk Government remains committed to introducing a Human Rights Act for Queensland; the AntiDiscrimination Commission Queensland will receive $2.5 million to support the Act’s administration and operation. “There will also be $2.5 million for the Office of the Information Commissioner for additional resources and officers to review decisions about access to government agency information.”

to assist boaties who are in trouble.

Bribie gives back to the community As successful local business owners, Poolwerx Bribie Island’s Michelle and Anthony Spicer are always looking for ways to give back to the local community that supports them and their next fundraising effort will focus on raising money for the local VMR. Michelle and Anthony held a fundraising day earlier this year for local girl Dylan McCann, raising over $4000 to help fund the life-changing surgery she requires that is currently only available in the US. Michelle said the response from the Bribie community was amazing, with local businesses generously donating prizes and the community getting behind the fundraising day. “We had local businesses donate vouchers, sausages for the sausage sizzle were donated by Woorim Meats and our suppliers gave us an energy efficient variable speed pump and a solar pool blanket, which we auctioned on the day,” she said. “The community got behind the fundraising day, coming out to enjoy the activities, bid on the auctions and buy raffle tickets.” Michelle and Anthony are hoping the community gets behind the fundraising day they have planned for September, to raise funds for VMR Bribie. “The local Volunteer Marine Rescue does an amazing job of keeping boaties safe on the water,” Michelle said. “Their members are all volunteers and while they receive government funding, they depend on community support and fundraising to meet their operational and training needs.” Michelle said the VMR Bribie volunteers provide a rescue service for boaties 365 days a year and have three rescue boats

Community “With boating being such a popular activity on Bribie, the local VMR is an extremely important part of the community.”

Budget 2018: More Taxes, More Debt, No Relief, No Interest in Pumicestone

Michelle said many of the VMR volunteers are also customers of Poolwerx Bribie and she and Anthony were keen to give back to members of the community who support their business.

13 June 2018

“Having VMR volunteers as our customers, we get an insight into the important work they do and that gave us the idea to host the fundraising day for them.”

Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, has slammed the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s fourth budget as nothing more than a budget of taxes, debt and unemployment.

Michelle and Anthony have run their Poolwerx Bribie business since 2015 and last year were named Poolwerx Franchise Partner of the Year for Brisbane North.

Ms Wilson said local residents have been calling her to express their anger that Pumicestone has been left out of this year’s budget.

They initially started out as a mobile pool servicing business and in late 2016, they opened their retail pool store on Goodwin Drive at Bongaree.

“It really has been a slap in the face for locals when they opened the papers to see that there is nothing in this budget for Pumicestone other than being slugged with higher taxes and more state debt.

“As we have expanded, we have been able to employ more locals and we now have four full-time pool technicians and a full-time retail store assistant,” Michelle said.

“With an $83 billion Labor debt bomb, we all end up paying for this in some way or another.

Along with their retail store, their mobile pool maintenance service takes in Bribie Island, Beachmere, Sandstone Point, Ningi, Toorbul, Meldale and Donnybrook and includes both residential and commercial customers. “At the moment about 40 percent of our mobile servicing customers are commercial operations like real estate agencies, a retirement village, golf clubs and resorts,” Michelle said. Michelle said she and Anthony had put a lot of time into developing longterm relationships with their clients and trouble-shooting their pool problems. “We’ve focused on providing a top level customer experience by asking our customers a lot of questions, solving their water quality and pool equipment problems and providing them with consistent information,” she said.

intersection pushed into the long grass” Ms Wilson said that there were also genuine concerns over the impacts of this budget on the Pumicestone small business community. “Local small businesses have been hit with a new waste tax that will take in $1.3 billion over four years. “This is nothing more than a blatant tax grab that the Labor Government happily admits will raise more money than required, as they pocket one third of the revenue for pet projects” Ms Wilson said. Ms Wilson said residents would continue to feel the pain of higher costs of living under this Labor Government. “Local residents are already paying more for electricity, more for their water, they feel the pinch every time they go to the fuel pump and of course car rego continues to sky rocket. The price slugs on all of these basic amenities are hurting locals”, Ms Wilson said. FAST FACTS: •

Venice Italy – romantic sophisticated and alluring a journey of the senses. How much time do you really need in this laid back yet exciting city to explore the twisting and ancient alleys and canals.

Three days in Venice

In this edition I am going to give you a list of 5 exciting things to do to enhance your trip starting with what else but – ‘A GHOST TOUR. ‘

If you think you know Venice then maybe you won’t be surprised to know that it has its own ghosts, some maybe better forgotten. Biasio the notorious child killer was executed in the main square by beheading and then his body chopped into 4 parts and hung on the four pillars as a reminder to Venetians how murderers will be treated. The beautiful Bovol Staircase is reportedly also haunted with screams heard in the deep of the night that indicate foul play

occurred here possibly during the late 15th century. Underground cemeteries hide secrets and as you walk down the Calle dei Assassini you can almost feel the chill that surrounds the darkness even on a warm summer night. The Doge’s who ruled Venice, did so until 1797. Their palace also known as Palazzo Ducale was their fortress where justice was delivered to those deemed unworthy of the Doge association. A Golden Book was housed here containing the names of those in favour with the royals. The imposing building was built on the edge of Saint Marks Square so that it was the first thing that ships saw as they approached. Along the piazzetta the columns are designed differently. Between the ninth and tenth columns death penalties were handed

day locals will not walk through many of these columns. Discovering Murano glass on the island of the same name is nothing new but the factories are still as interesting as they day they were built. Just be aware that they are good sales people. BURANO on the same ferry route is by far the most enchanting. Famous for its lace and tatted products, the island is in harmony with nature with its rainbow of coloured buildings. Small boats anchored outside each dwelling are the Venetians mode of transport. Do stop at one of the divine little cafes even for just a cup of coffee to experience local hospitality.

out. It is said that if a prisoner could walk around the third column – right on

Basilica San Marco is a blend of Gothic, Byzantine, Romanesque and Renaissance styles representing the wealth of Venice. Construction on the Basilica began in 828 by the Doge’s to house the body of St Mark. You will not see opulence such as this anywhere in Europe. The gold is almost blinding as you wind your way through the many columns and altars. The best time to view is on an afterhours tour. Even in the flooded seasons the crowds are enormous.

San Marco Basilica

It pays to do your homework before entering Venice or you might just miss this exciting tour. The Bacari or wine bars are dotted in every nook around the city. They serve “Cicchetti” or bite sized morsels of everything from cheeses to hot savories. Situated in the Cannaregio district, the Jewish area holds a swag of historical memories. It is said that this is where Shakespeare found his inspiration for his famous work - Merchant of Venice. I highly recommend the Cicchetti and Wine Tour in the Jewish Ghettos

MORE MONEY FOR HOSPITALS NOT BANKS – Susan Lamb

I will fight Malcolm Turnbull’s $2.9 million cuts to Caboolture Hospital Hi I’m Labor’s Susan Lamb, Labor’s candidate for Longman. I was born in Mackay, I live locally and I spent 30 years living in Dakabin raising my four boys and working as a teacher aide. I will fight the LNP’s decision to cut $2.9 million from the Caboolture Hospital.

The LNP had to come kicking and screaming to give the banks a royal commission. Even now they are still going to give $17 billion to the banks. The LNP chooses the big banks. I choose the Caboolture Hospital.

Now in its 20th year, the Matthew Flinders Art Prize honours artists of all mediums and showcases the wonderful Bribie Island Community Arts Centre where it is based. The Arts Centre, built in 1988 in Banksia Beach, had the splendid Matthew Flinders Gallery added in 1998. Initially drawing local Bribie artists who worked, shared and honed their craft at the Arts Centre, it has grown and spread its range to artists from all over south-east Queensland and beyond. This expansion has been helped significantly by generous local sponsors and supporters. In keeping with its growth and enhanced status within the arts community, it has done away with categories and is now an open competition.

Prize and Lottery Scams How the Scam works These scams try to trick you into giving money upfront or your personal details in order to receive a prize from a lottery, sweepstake or competition that you never entered. Scammers claim you need to pay fees or taxes before your winnings or prize can be released. You may also have to call or send a text to a premium rate phone number to claim your prize. Scratchie Scams involve getting mail containing glossy brochures and number of scratchies cards, one of which will be a winner. To make it more believable, it will often be second or third prize. When you call to claim your prize, the scammers will ask for fees or taxes to be paid before you can get your winnings. Lottery Scams may use the names of real overseas lotteries to claim that you’ve won cash, even though you never entered into them. Scammers normally ask for fees or taxes to release the funds. They will also tell you they need your personal details to prove you are the correct winner but then use this information to steal your identity or money from your bank account. Travel Prize Scams involve scammers claiming you’ve won a free holiday or airfares. In fact, what you’ve actually won is the chance to buy acco9mmodation or flight vouchers. These travel vouchers often have hidden fees and conditions or may be fake and worthless. Similarly, scammers may offer you amazing discounted holiday packages that just don’t exist.

Protect yourself • Remember: you cannot win money in a lottery or competition unless you have entered • Competitions and lotteries do not require you to pay a fee to collect winnings – conduct a search online using the exact wording of the offer. It may help confirm that it’s a scam. • Think twice before calling or text messaging a phone number starting with ‘19’ – they are charged at premium rates

Bribie Toastmasters celebrate another wonderful year. Bribie Toastmasters and guests from clubs around the region celebrated their Executive Committee Changeover and Award night on Tuesday the 19th of June. As always the night was filled with excellent speeches and a lot of laughter as Toastmasters enjoyed giving a 30second warm up speech about the changes they would like in their lives and then, after a quick supper break, went on to a round of “Speed Dating” or rather “Speed Getting To Know You”. This gave everyone a chance to learn the art of one on one conversation, getting to the point quickly and learning to listen rather than reply. Bribie Toastmasters also celebrated those who have reached higher levels of speaking and progressed in their achievements throughout the year with Bert Linford receiving the Recognition Award for his hard work as Sargent of Arms, Anne Iverson being Awarded the Presidents Award for her excellent progression as one of the newer members of Toastmasters and Cathy McGillivray received the Bribie Toastmaster of The Year Award. If you are interested in enhancing your public, our your one on one speaking, in an environment that educates and supports your growth then come along to a Bribie Toastmasters meeting! The meetings are at 7pm for a 7.15pm start and are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month in the ANZAC room of the Bribie Island RSL. If you would like more information on Toastmasters please phone Cathy McGillivray on 0408803037

Anne Iverson Presidents Award

School’s Out for Labor – LNP Has the Plan Member for Pumicestone and Shadow Assistant Minister for Education, Simone Wilson, heralded today’s announcement by Deb Frecklington as getting our education system back to basics. “Today the LNP stood up for our hard working teachers, Principals and of course all children with our plan to set education in the right direction”, Ms Wilson said. “The current curriculum is clogged, bogs our teachers down and is by no means improving our educational standards.

Bert Linford recognition Award

“We want to give children the very best opportunities to leave school with bright minds, to get a job and fulfil their aspirations. “By contrast, when it comes to the education of our kids we have a Premier hell-bent on excluding English as a key result of senior assessments. “We see nothing but all talk and no action by the Labor Government when it comes to our kids’ education. That is unless it involves a new school in the Education Minister and Deputy Premier’s electorates.

Cathy McGillivray Toastmaster of the year

“As Deb said today, “Labor’s decision to scrap English as a mandatory subject for ATAR diminishes the importance of the

subject” but an LNP Government won’t let this happen.

Our plan includes: •

making English a mandatory subject for ATAR and senior assessments

•

decluttering the curriculum to have a greater focus on language, literacy and numeracy

•

continue the roll-out of Independent Public Schools

“Principals, teachers and parents have told me of their concerns with the current curriculum which is why an elected LNP Government will work with them to develop a Queensland guideline that gets us back to basics. “In my electorate of Pumicestone there are three Independent Public Schools (IPS) and they are a credit to our community. “The LNP recognises that a one-size fits all approach to education simply does not work. “That is why we support the ongoing IPS program to give more autonomy to schools and improve overall student outcomes. “As the Shadow Assistant Education Minister I can proudly say that today’s announcement proves the LNP puts students ahead of unions, and parents, teachers and Principals ahead of leftwing ideology”.

HOME STAGING CHECKLIST FOR A SPEEDY WINTER SALE! With wintertime traditionally a theoretical slower selling season in the real estate market a lot of buyers are tempted to wait until spring rolls around to put their home on the market. The thinking behind this is that buyers go into

hibernation during colder months and are not as willing to attend inspections. Not to mention residences don’t look their best on cold and gloomy winter days.

Home repairs

However, there are several advantages for sellers to take the leap in the coldest months of the year. With lower supply in housing stock, there’s less rivalry from other similar properties while competition remains high amongst motivated buyers. This often means the seller has more room to negotiate a better sale price. Some property experts even argue selling in winter can work out better for the vendor than in spring. Warm = welcoming Always ensure you make your home as warm and welcoming as possible. In addition to considering baking something nice in the oven, utilise whatever assets you have, be it a log fire or central heating, to create a snug feel. Throw thick blankets on couches in communal living spaces and bedrooms, plus if you have exposed floorboards, use rugs to soften the feel of rooms.

Clean out gutters and unblock drains and replace any loose or damaged roof tiles. Rainy, cold days can often expose gutters that need repair or roof tiles that need replacing. Fix these as well as replace any leaky taps or showerheads and chipped fixtures. Remove cobwebs from the home’s exterior. Focus especially on window frames and clean windows to ensure that any sunlight that appears is able to stream freely into the home, so they don’t show signs of drafts or leakiness.

Artificial light In addition to taking advantage of any natural light, use lighting throughout the house to your advantage. Turn on your lamps and lighting fixtures to give your home a sophisticated and relaxed glow. Replace light bulbs with warm and higher wattage bulbs. Steam clean curtains; wipe clean blinds and shades, pendant lighting and light fixtures. Add a sensor light or lamp sconces to the front porch.

For sale: 35 Eden Crescent, Woorim Utilise mirrors which have the added effect of making rooms seem larger. Introduce large mirrors to maximise natural light in any dark rooms or corners. Position these opposite your windows which will augment that feel.

Make sure your entrance is spotless and caters to the cold weather – provide things like an umbrella stand, a coat rack, and even a new welcome mat outside the front door to prevent drips and mud being tracked in onto the carpet. Position pot plants beside entryways.

Clean and polish stainless-steel kitchen appliances. Don’t forget the top of the fridge and canopy range hood! Regrout tiled flooring and surfaces. Scrub showers, sinks, bathtubs, loos and laundry troughs. Refinish timber floors or replace carpeting (if necessary). Vacuum and steam clean all carpets and rugs.

Gardens

Declutter the pantry, cupboards, garage, garden shed and all surfaces to showcase storage space.

Outdoor spaces

Check heating systems and fireplaces are in tip-top condition. Arrange to have gas heaters serviced, the chimney swept and ducted heating systems cleaned.

If you have outdoor spaces that can be utilised for entertaining throughout the year, highlight how things like gas heaters, drop down cafe blinds or chimineas will help create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Add luminous candles to indoor and patio furniture to create an inviting feel and warming glow.

For sale: 7/155 Sylvan Beach Esplanade, Bellara Add a few cheerful pops of colour (i.e. vase of sunflowers, houseplants, books, an abstract artwork or a bowl of green apples) to your interiors to add character and bring the home to life.

Run your open house at times when the natural light is at its’ brightest and best. Winter days are shorter and the sun is lower and sits to the North which provides a great opportunity to highlight any north facing areas. Clean windows inside and out to let the light flood in.

Include floor rugs to chilly timber, polished concrete, the patio and tiled flooring for instant warmth.

In the predominantly lifestyle market, she said waterfront was in demand and at well above pre-GFC activity levels. Families, the semi-retired and the retired from interstate and overseas are attracted by the accessibility to water and the location of the market in the wellconnected Brisbane to Sunshine Coast corridor

For sale: 7/59 Welsby Parade, Bongaree If your residence really does show its best in the warmer months but you can’t avoid a winter sale then display a series of photos of your home in other seasons. Helping potential buyers visualise how the house presents throughout the year could be extremely helpful. The winter months should not be feared as a time to sell, in recent year’s there have been some outstanding sales results achieved in the winter months, why? It’s a basic supply and demand exercise. People still think and tend to hold off for the spring selling season and that has meant wise vendors with an eye on their local market have been able to take advantage of the low interest rate environment and achieve outstanding results.

Facial Recognition – Friend or Foe?

When it isn’t just harmless fun

Imagine being able to use your face for your bank PIN. Or looking up a name to find thousands of personal pictures collected by Google. Or even being able to just look at someone’s face and knowing everything about them. Well, the way facial recognition technology is going, we won’t need to imagine these scenarios much longer, with technological advancement this will become a reality. But is this really for the better of humanity? Or is this an invasion of our privacy?

By Amy Chung – Bribie Island SHS – Year 8

Facial recognition is a commonly used technological advancement that uses algorithms to record and identify different people’s unique facial structures. T. Kohonen, the pioneer of this technology, has made many contributions to the field of artificial neural networks developed the self-organising map which is a map in 1989. This visualised and interpreted large high-dimensional data sets, enabling the first form of voice recognition. Recognition has been updated constantly to bring us the facial recognition we all know today. It is used as a password on devices such as the iPhone X, but was largely developed in response the September 11 terrorist attacks. Security systems have been developed to utilise personalised biometric features such as face, voice and fingerprint recognition in order to combat crime. However, this clever development points to a more worrying trend.

forever be public with this technology. The privacy of celebrities is majorly breached, just as yours could be too. Google has released a statement after the release of their glass headsets saying that they planned to make it possible to upon looking at someone’s face, have access to every photograph, video and piece of information on them. Without even having a proper conversation with someone, you already their birthplace, criminal record, age, and any other personal information that has been put on the internet. Our privacy, a fundamental human right, is put in utter jeopardy with the entire process of getting to know someone deemed unnecessary. So, although facial recognition can certainly be beneficial to society, it is also a breach of privacy.

Facebook, Google, Apple and Samsung are only a small number of the companies that have started to develop or already have developed facial identification whereby facial recognition assists in identifying public figures and celebrities. With both Sky News and the New York Times using facial recognition to identify guests at the recent royal wedding. This takes paparazzi to a whole new level. Celebrities can be constantly tracked, wherever they go and whatever they do will

Facial recognition is arguably one of the greatest technological advancements of 20th century and has made life easier for so many people in so many ways. But how could we be sure that this technology is used in the right way? How can they ensure that people aren’t taking advantage of this knowledge and using to invade people’s privacy? We need to ensure that facial recognition remains solely beneficial to society, without the associated privacy concerns.

Education for the Head, Heart and Hands. Completion of stage 1 of the building programme on Beachmere Road will be in term 4. This will be an exciting achievement for the community and while the Beachmere Community Hall has offered wonderful temporary premises, we are looking forward to moving to our permanent home. Interest in the Birali Steiner School continues to grow. Term 2 finished with the winter festival, with all the students constructing lanterns for the lantern walk. An application has now been submitted to the Non-State-Schools Accreditation Board for classes 7-10. School Tours and Open Days are the best way to investigate this wonderful, alternative form of education or phone for an appointment: 5429 0511.

“It was just some harmless fun.” “We didn’t mean for it to go this far.” “We didn’t want for someone to get hurt.” Everyday we are struck with updates on our phones, tablets and computers. Overwhelmed with notifications about the latest gossip in media. Texting our friends rumours we heard in the schoolgrounds and wait as it spreads like wildfire. Is what we are doing going to far? Are we taking the privileges of social media and turning it into something negative? Cyberbullying is one of the largest forms of harassment and is taking over the young children of Australia. Even if you think you are sending messages or images privately they can still be accessed and once they are there is no going back. Cyberbullying happens in many forms such as posting hurtful messages, images or videos online, sending abusive texts and emails, creating fake social networking profiles or websites that are hurtful, nasty online gossip and chat and any other form of digital communication which is intended to hurt or make someone fear for their safety. Cyberbullying is a federal crime and can lead to serious consequences with the maximum penalty being three years imprisonment or fines up to $30,000. In August 2017, Amanda Greenshaw

— a fourteen-year old girl — took her life due to cyberbullying. Messages came through non-stop telling her she was a “waste of space”, calling her fat and to kill herself. One day her mother was called saying her daughter was not at school and when she rushed into her home she found Amanda dead in the hallway. The night she took her life she was still receiving horrific messages. Cyberbullying victims are also nine times more likely to consider committing suicide which is terrifying. For parents, keeping an open communication with your child is essential not only for a healthy relationship but also for making sure your child has support. Talk to your child after school, in the car or at dinner about how the feel and if anything is happening at school that they should know about. Make sure they are comfortable with you to ensure that they are not hiding their true feelings. If your child is coming to an age where you think there may be some school dramas talk to them about the appropriate behaviours at school and out in public. This will guarantee that you and your child will have a comfortable and communicating relationship while keeping them safe. Cyberbullying is not something that should not be joked about, but should be stopped.. So next time you, your friend, a peer or someone you don’t really know is about to hurt another in the form of cyberbullying stop them. Make sure to think about innocent kids like Amanda Greenshaw and try to think what it must have felt like in her shoes because was it all really just some harmless fun?

Deb Says Queensland kids set to be cool under LNP plan

“This is all part of our plan to make Queensland kids the smartest in the nation. “Cool kids are smart kids.” Ms Frecklington said the Palaszczuk Labor Government had no plan to air condition classrooms across the whole state.

Buy. Sell. Trade... 7 Days

“Last year we had the hottest year on record across Queensland with many communities in Southeast Queensland recording their highest temperatures ever,” Ms Frecklington said.

“Currently there are children and teachers sweltering in classrooms with no air-conditioning,” Ms Frecklington said. “Last year, Gatton hit 45.7 degrees Celsius, Dalby hit 43, Warwick hit 42.2, Toowoomba hit 40.8 and in January Brisbane’s maximum temperature was 37.5 degrees. “How can children possibly learn and how can teachers teach in these conditions. “This is why, as a part of our education plan, we will air-condition every classroom in Queensland, so our children have the best possible chance at learning.

LNP Shadow Education Minister Jarrod Bleijie said Labor were all talk and no action when it comes to investing in education. “Labor’s only plan is taxes, debt and unemployment,” Mr Bleijie said. “Kids are being sent home with heat exhaustion and yet Labor are turning a blind eye to this problem. “In 2017, 13 out of 20 NAPLAN rankings went backwards and it is no wonder kids are struggling to learn when some days their classrooms are over 35 degrees. “Schools will be cool under the LNP’s plan.

MICK’S PATCH Flourishing GardensSoils ain’t SoilsIn Sandy Soils The Recipe!

Landscape Plant of the Month

Designing a new garden Where to start?

Welcome to our latest gardening articles, written I love this topic. I have been asked many times by a passionate horticulturist, for our equally about providing advice on plant selection and their Monstera deliciosa or Fruit Salad Plant passionate gardening community living on Bribie placement in the proposed landscape planting plan. I Island and surrounding districts. Due to popular find it a most interesting subject indeed. The planting demand on my consultations, I have prepared plan can have so many variables and possibilities, today a step by step, easy to follow, soil rebuilding but there are some basic foundation questions to recipe that is achievable with realistic expectations be addressed when creating your new garden design for our predominantly sandy soils here on the from scratch. Some questions to think about are: Do coast. “Soils ain’t Soils”- is really the ultimate title you intend installing irrigation? - as mentioned in myto begin to describe the difference between a “Soils ain’t Soils” article today, soil moisture is the key to successful gardening and hence regular irrigation much desirable, volcanic clay- loam fertile soil, in will allow us to select and include some interesting comparison to our almost pure silica, structureless subtropical climate specimens to our landscape sands here on Bribie Island. The main ingredient design that would otherwise curl their toes up at the that is deficient in our sandy soils, is adequate first dry spell or windy day thrown their way. This is organic matter. The biggest problem we can face particularly important when establishing new plants sometimes when addressing the first steps of a that arrived from a nursery as these plants have been soil rebuilding strategy- is to ensure the soil has fed luxury amounts of irrigation, sometimes multiple not become hydrophobic. This is why its Sandy soils- have perfect drainage capabilities, fundamental in getting your soil requirements right but they do not retain moisture as well as a soil for your actual desired planting theme, whether it be that is high in organic matter. If you are dealing Good old Monstera deliciosa, these are great landscape Australian Native, Tropical, Cottage gardens or food with soils that are not easily wettable, then getting specimens and were in favour years ago as they are hardy, production plants for consumption. moisture to penetrate these soils will be on top drought tolerant and relatively trouble free if given the room If you are primarily growing fruit trees or vegetables, of your list- as strategy (NO:1). Community

The Odd Little Lives of the Political Activists

By Staff Writer : Harvey Fewings.

Small business to access greater government purchasing opportunities Small businesses will have easier and better access to government purchasing opportunities through the establishment of a Queensland Small Business Procurement Commitment.

Tendrils of coloured smoke float lazily across the sloping lawn in front of the Community House. A drift of tear gas here, a sniff of partly burnt tyre there, the legacy of another rough day on society’s barricades, giving it all for the latest crusade. Scattered over the lawn are the tattered remnants of the day’s banners, proclaiming the mindless chant “ Whaddawewant – everythink – whendowewanit – now “. The message on the tattered flags is the undying dogma, dating back to the Tolpuddle Martyrs. This message is the siren song which drives the glittering-eyed zealots on their sacred mission, which is to ensure that they, and only them, are the ones who can identify social injustice, cruelty to animals, the ravages of climate change, and, of course, the morphing of society into a multicoloured rabble. Staggering in from the daily ideological battleground; another day being outraged; another day pursuing vigorous actions for a cause, however obscure to the rest of us…these are the ‘ activists ‘; the political warriors who prosecute the latest, desperate struggle to save us and our society. After such a day, they fling themselves down on the community couches and stare, dull-eyed, at the walls of the community house. Walls which display posters of Obamacare, Antifa, smirking faces of anonymity masks, some Me Too pussy hats stuck on the wall with blue tack and a mysterious relic of the past - a faded to yellow A3 sheet of Che Guevara’s face. This community house is their safe space, where they can slurp their vodka and supermarket orange and chew their way through their vegan pizzas, tofu covered flatbread, hamburgers or fried chicken. Generally speaking, in the matters of current affairs and political trends there are ‘ believers ‘ who carry a deep commitment, almost a faith, in the political or social causes which attract them and more strength to them, they are needed because they participate; they are involved. They are the participants... they do things, they make things happen. In our democracies, most members of our communities are strangers to the process of how we organise and elect our leaders. Our Parliaments are criticised, our politicians are ridiculed in pub sessions, but never will you hear a solution offered to address the problems and rarely will you see a positive contribution. As with the crowd in an ancient Roman stadium, they sit on the terraces, watch the show and then go home. And that, of course, is their right. They can do just that as there is nothing wrong with any of that. It is the way that it is. They are the spectators, every society has them, and we need them, they comprise the vast majority of our

community, they provide the bulk of our population. Without making this all too complicated, we have, in the world of our politics and current affairs, the “ activists ‘, the “ participants ‘ and the “ spectators. “ The “ participants “ and the “ spectators “ are of us; they comprise society’s milieu; I mean who can’t love a Collingwood supporter – great spectators! Or who can’t relate to an Olympic Champion – great participants! But it is the “ activists “ that grab the attention of the media, both print and electronic; therefore this article examines the motivation and ‘ raison d’etre ‘ of the activists in our community. We can, with certainty, assert that empty vessels, when struck, make the loudest noises; an analogy which fairly portrays the “ activists “. Now they won’t like that, too bad. But, “ activists “ are empty vessels, making noises about activities and endeavours in our society which attract their unwanted attention only because it suits their purpose at the time. You see, “ activists “ don’t have causes or beliefs, they rarely act positively; their purpose is to break down or destroy what they perceive as social injustice. It is not possible to conduct a rational debate with “ activists“, they are not interested in a discussion which may lead to a definite conclusion, their only purpose is the destruction or cessation of a particular activity which they perceive to be wrong. Examples float readily to the surface – the live animal export trade is one. This trade is a traditional agricultural activity in Australia. It provides a substantial living for thousands of Australians, not just sheep or cattle farmers: it has its faults, and it has its problems, no one involved in the industry denies that, but, work is being done and has been done, to address those problems. A rational debate would uncover these positive actions and professional concern… but “ activists “ have seen a film clip of obvious animal distress, a film clip edited to highlight the suffering and create a perception of deliberate or uncaring animal cruelty. So for the “ activist “, the perception becomes a reality, and the live animal export trade must be shut down. No thought applies to the immediate effect upon Australians going about legal work; no idea of the impact upon the hundreds of thousands of people in the Middle East who depend on this trade for employment and sustenance – none at all. Just shut it down. There is also predictability about activism

that borders upon boring. Australia Day – change the flag – no discussion, change the flag! Australia Day – invasion day – no discussion, we have witnessed well nourished “ activists “ advocating the destruction of our Nation, because of a wrong, they perceive, committed generations ago. Coal Mining – stop the bloody lot! – no discussion, no clarity of thinking – just stop it! Global Warming [ Climate Change ] – Nations will drown – we shall all perish [ well that’s inevitable anyway. ] – stop it – stop everything – stop it now! So. What is it that drives this stuff? My experience, from long ago exposure to activism, draws me to conclude that most “ activists “ have a rudder problem. They don’t know how to steer themselves through life, and so they draw attention to themselves by outlandish and bizarre activity designed to gain the approval of their peers and the condemnation of the ‘ mob ‘. “ Activists “ are determinedly tribal. They need the security of the common environment, and they crave the approval of the tribe. Such is their need for approbation that they will act in increasingly odd ways. Chaining themselves to bulldozers, climbing cranes on building sites, burning National flags, baring their bums at visiting leaders, faking films of industrial or agricultural processes to gain attention, advocating the destruction of ‘ everything ‘.They will desecrate National memorials, establish tent camping sites in public parks and declare the rubbish strewn mess to be an “ embassy“.The list goes on. It seems to me that the means of determining successful activist activity is by the level of approval with the tribe, for example, a comment like, “ Wally burnt the bloody flag today and got peppered by eight coppers, fantastic! “ And by the level of anger created in the general community, for example, a comment like, “ Wally pissed off big mobs of people today by burning the flag, it was all over TV tonight, ripper! “ And, within the community house, Wally huffs and puffs, strutting proudly about hoping to gain the favours of Xenia, his favourite female “ activist “. Political activism does not achieve much, mostly noise and damage. Real political change in our democracies came from, and will continue to come from, committed participants and approved, en masse, by the spectators. That is how our communities work; the rest is just shonky, noisy, damaging and very odd nonsense.

Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman said the Queensland Government wanted feedback from small businesses to ensure they could take full advantage of the Buy Queensland policy and take part in the government procurement processes. “We want to support Queensland businesses by opening up opportunities for them to participate in the government’s multi-billion-dollar investment in goods and services,” she said. “This also locks into our Go Local, Grow Local campaign, which is helping small businesses across the state cement their position in their communities. “The main thing is that we want to make it easier for small business to do business with government.” Queensland has 426,000 small businesses and they are acknowledged as a key driver of the state’s economy and a major supporter of job creation. “The Queensland Government’s purchasing of goods and services contributes to growing the economy, jobs and businesses,” Minister Fentiman said. “Allowing greater access to these opportunities for small businesses recognises the contribution they make to our communities across Queensland.” The Queensland Government has already demonstrated strong commitment to ensuring procurement benefits extend to all Queenslanders through the Backing Queensland Jobs – Queensland Government Procurement Strategy 2017 and the Queensland Procurement Policy 2017. Chamber of Commerce and Industry Queensland CEO Stephen Tait said CCIQ welcomed the consultation paper. “This is a small business-friendly initiative aimed at ensuring that small business employers are given every opportunity to access government-led opportunities,” he said. “CCIQ is focused on securing outcomes for Queensland’s small businesses, and we will continue to emphasise the importance of transparency and accountability when it comes to government procurement. “We will work with the government to ensure tangible and genuine procurement outcomes for small businesses as a result of this consultation paper.”

Cranky Lizard Speaks

July 2018.

The Truth in our Public Life The Truth is defined as: “ That which is true by fact or reality. “ Most sensible people look at this and accept the statement as apparent. And it should be – bloody obvious! But, in our public lives, and, in saying that, Cranky Lizard refers to the institutions and persons who comprise our community and society leadership; in particular those persons who are voted by the majority will, into positions of leadership and trust. Cranky Lizard also refers to one the great institutions of our democracy, the fourth estate – meaning the media, both print and electronic – commonly referred to as “ The Free Press. “ By the expression of public will and the existence of a democratic system of living, trading and sharing our commonwealth these persons and these institutions occupy a particular place of trust within our lives. We place them in positions of trust, and we expect them to honour that trust.

Regular Comment

CRANKY LIZARD OBSERVES THAT IN OUR CURRENT TIMES THIS IS NOT THE CASE !! Some examples:In recent news and current affairs articles, the “ Free Press “ has published images of an Australian Army vehicle, on operational service, flying a Nazi flag, the ‘ swastika ‘. The story and the picture were published as current news. These images were confronting, and considering the recent publicity given to the Armed Forces operations in Afghanistan and the unproven allegations of poor conduct levelled against the Australians, it is apparent these images were designed to create a poor impression of the Australian Army on active service. The facts around this matter are this – this image was taken eleven, yes, eleven years ago! The issue was severely dealt with by the Defence Authorities at the time, and the issue was complete. It is Cranky Lizard’s opinion that this story was deliberately published to mislead readers and observers and was an abrogation of public trust. Because of issues relating to the breaching of Section 44 of the Australian Constitution, the Member of the Federal Parliament in the seat of Longman was determined to be ineligible to remain in the Parliament by the High court of Australia and forced to resign. Hence bringing about a Federal By-Election in the Federal Seat of Longman on 28 July

2018. Cranky Lizard is aware that there are some persons, active in our community, door knocking homes and talking to them about the current Federal Government’s plans to substantially reduce funding for the local Caboolture Hospital…this is being said in the context of the current ByElection…and Cranky Lizard makes it very clear that these persons do not identify with any official political party involved in the election. They are just there, and they are not telling the truth. They know they are not telling the truth and it is a glaring example of disrespect for the truth in our public lives. The fact that these people, whoever they are, are deliberately misleading people in an attempt to affect their vote on polling day, is an abrogation of public trust. Cranky Lizard is also aware that organisations, funded by large unions, political parties plus high wealth individuals, give themselves obscure names and claim to act in the public interest over issues of funding for hospitals and education. These organisations target specific politicians with a view to removing them from Parliament, which is fine, regarding our democracy, but they mislead the electorate as to who they are, who is funding them and what their real purpose is! Cranky Lizard asserts that these activities, these shadowy organisations are a further abrogation of public trust. So what? You may ask. Does this really matter? Cranky Lizard thinks it does – Cranky Lizard thinks it matters a great deal. We expect some integrity in our systems of governance – and elections of politicians are central to our system of governance. If we shrug our shoulders and accept this blatant dishonesty, then how can we expect politicians to be concerned about acting with integrity? If we have already sent them a message that we don’t care. But we do care! We should care! If we, the

electors, the citizens or our communities, do not set standards of integrity in our public life, then how the hell can we complain about dishonesty in our institutions? It seems as evident as a dunny in the desert that we, as a community, must insist, even demand, public honesty from our elected officials, our public institutions and the ‘ Free Press.’ And this demand for public honesty must come from us at home, in our front yards, on our streets and in our parks; especially during an election campaign when political parties are vying for your vote. When we receive information from political parties, any political party – does not matter which one – look at the material presented, critically examine it and if it seems wrong or untrue, contact the people who authorised it and challenge them. Hold them accountable, to you, for what they say, or what they promise. When people come to your door, demand from them, the facts about their stories. What is the evidence to support their comments? Make them work for your vote. Cranky Lizard judges that the common belief that politicians treat their communities with some disrespect is simply because we have not held them accountable to us in the words they speak and the actions they take. We have allowed the standards of public debate to be eroded; we have not demanded public honesty. Cranky Lizard reckons that if we don’t set the standards for honesty in public life; then no one else will, and we shall have to live with the situation we have created. And that is just not bloody good enough!

Welcome to July and the 9 vibration beautiful souls. Following on from last months intelligent 8 vibration that carried a much needed sense of purpose and direction, this months sophisticated 9 will heighten and propel personal growth. What started as a restlessness in May, now brings creative change and growth. An unexpected and generous act will likely be received by most as the 9 vibration fizzles in a charitable and humanitarian way. Trust that if a gift comes your way, it not only meant to benefit you but others also. Pay it forward, the universe will reward you. The 9 vibration is associated with The Hermit in Tarot.

The challenge of The Hermit is to recognise the lesson or the humble teacher who is often disguised. The wisdom you have been seeking is often found on quiet reflection. Blocking out white noise brings incredible insight. Be mindful of your communication style and don’t get involved in others complaining or personal matters. It is always wise to avoid the trap of an egocentric circle of negativity, but particularly this month. Ask yourself “ is it kind, helpful or necessary” if not, keep it to yourself. Avid reckless action at the end of the month, especially around the time of the lunar eclipse on the 27th. The focus on personal emotion, family and home can be harnessed too release and forgive or to end a cycle, remember you are in control of the outcome. This months overall message is , when your heart is full of gratitude any door that appears closed can be an opening for an even greater blessing. Have a creative and fun month. State Government fails women’s sport in Queensland

In round 10 the boys travelled to Ipswich to play a Sunday game in very windy conditions and came away good winners, 9.11.65 to 3.7.35. The Bulldogs got to a good lead in the second term and maintained it for the rest of the game. Goal kickers were J. Hedley 2, A. Snow 2, B. Hedley 2, T. Cody, T. Gilmore and J. Bradshaw all one each.

LNP Shadow Minister for Sport JohnPaul Langbroek said Labor had failed women’s sport again and again.

Fishers hooked on proposed legislation changes Fishers want heavier penalties and stronger compliance powers to tackle black marketing. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner said respondents to a public survey expressed overwhelming support for proposed changes to modernise the Fisheries Act 1994. “We received more than 230 responses during public consultation, with more than 90 per cent of respondents agreeing that the enforcement powers of fisheries inspectors and penalties to address serious fisheries offences such as black marketing should be strengthened,” he said. “There is evidence that illegal fishing operations are becoming more sophisticated and organised, particularly in high-value fisheries such as mud crab, shark fin, coral trout, Spanish mackerel and tropical rock lobster. “Blackmarketing has the potential to undermine the viability of commercial fishing, impact on legitimate seafood businesses and lead to unsustainable fishing practices.” Minister Furner said survey respondents also supported other proposed amendments to the Act to modernise the objectives and deliver more responsive decision making. “More than 80 per cent of respondents agreed that the objective of the Fisheries Act should be modernised and the interests of key stakeholder groups be recognised,” he said. “Additionally, more than 55 per cent of respondents agreed that the roles of the Minister responsible for fisheries and the chief executive in managing Queensland’s fisheries be clarified, and that more responsive decision-making through the use of harvest strategies be allowed for. “More than 84 per cent of respondents agreed that a reduction in the complexity and removal of redundant provisions were required. “Some people expressed concern that possession limits might change. It’s important to understand that the proposal is only for Fisheries Queensland to be able to adjust possession limits if it is outlined in a pre-agreed harvest strategy that has been approved following public consultation. Mr Furner said the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act 1994 were needed to provide the legislative foundations to support the implementation of the Queensland Government’s Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-2027. “The Palaszczuk Government is committed to protecting the State’s valuable fisheries resources and delivering a world-class fisheries management system through the

Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017-27,” he said. “Feedback received from recreational and commercial fishers will play an integral role in updating the Act to meet community expectations for fishing laws which are contemporary, practical and simple to understand. “The results of consultation will be considered when drafting the Bill, which will be put to Parliament later in the year.”

A detailed report on the results of this consultation is available at www.daf.qld.gov.au/ sustainablefisheriesstrategy For more information, visit www. daf.qld.gov.au or phone 13 25 23.

Fishing the Pumicestone Passage towards Spring As the waters of Pumicestone Passage warm up towards summer, there’ll be opportunities for fishing estuary cod and mangrove jacks, as well as some good flathead, in the creeks and around the mangroves and oyster leases. Ningi Creek is the first creek on the left (mainland) side as you travel north from Spinnaker Sound Marina. As you explore the mouth of this creek on a low tide you will soon realise why locals love this area so much, but be careful not to get stuck on any of the sandbanks! The entrance is marked by a yellow cross beacon 2km north of Spinnaker Sound Marina – you’ll find it on the Bribie Island Boat Charters’ chart. The mouth of Ningi Creek is a popular area for flathead, and also sand crabs through the summer months (any month that has an “r” in it, is the usual saying). Along the oyster leases in that area is also good for bream but be careful not to interfere with or damage the working oyster leases. The summer whiting also spend the warmer months in the Passage and up the creeks.

sweetlip and Moses perch over the summer. The tidal run through there is strong, especially during December-early January, so you might have to fish on the drift. If you want to anchor, try to choose a period of time over the change of tide. Just north-west of Pacific Harbour is the Avon Wreck, which is most visible on the lower part of the tides before it becomes submerged. It is home to some decent whiting and bream. Shag Island lies behind the wreck looking northward and the relatively deep water channel between them is known to hold good fish, although it can leave you in shallow water with no obvious exit if you don’t watch the tide.

TIDE TIMES FOR 16 June - 15 July JULY

AUGUST

Heading another 2km north of the Pacific Harbour entrance, on the Bribie side of the Pumicestone Passsage is White Patch. White Patch is nicely protected from northerlies and northeast/easterlies. Anchoring in towards Wright’s Creek will also offer shelter from the regular south-easterlies, but coming home to Spinnaker Sound Marina might be a little bumpy! This spot holds juvenile snapper, bream, flathead, occasional trevally and mulloway and sand crabs. The northern end of the White Patch gutter narrows and drops out quickly, so be careful of the tide, but there are good catches possible from this area. The Pumicestone Passage’s mudflats and protected wetlands also support many species of wading birds. During summer, huge numbers of migratory birds use Bribie Island and the Pumicestone Passage as their nesting-place; others use the area as a resting-place on their migratory path. Be aware of the no-go zone known as Kakadu bird-roost, on the north side of Pacific Harbour and marked on the Bribie Island Boat Charters’ chart – we all need to help protect these birds after their long-haul flights from Siberia and other northern climes. Any time, any tide, any season, there is something to find out in the Pumicestone Passage. The diversity of its fish species, as well as the dolphins, dugongs and turtles, birdlife and natural beauty make a day out in the Passage a very special experience.

Congratulations to my Photo Competition Winners Winning entry: Imelda Byrne of Banksia Beach – Webber Baby Q

1st Runner Up: John Keating of Ningi - $50 fuel voucher

2nd Runner Up: Alain Chardon of Banksia Beach - $50 fuel voucher

Through the lens, we can experience environments more deeply and perhaps understand our beautiful place in the world more fully. Congratulations to the winners of my photo competition for 2018. Special thanks to everyone who entered the competition. There were so many amazing images depicting our magnificent electorate of Pumicestone. Thanks also to Deborah Wheeler-Hildreth for judging the entries. I think we can all agree these three images are simply spectacular. Sunsets were definitely a common theme this year and I can’t wait to display these images in my office.

State Budget Run Down

On 12th June, the Treasurer handed down the State Budget for 2018/19 and what a disappointing outcome it was for Pumicestone. Not everyone may agree but one of our most pressing needs as a growing community is upgrades to our road networks. Unfortunately the State Government doesn’t agree, and in fact we could be excused for thinking we have been struck off the map. There is no funding for the Beachmere Road upgrade and planning works to upgrade Bribie Island Road between Hickey and Saint Road has been cut by $1 million and delayed by another year. You can sign my petitions at simonewilson.com.au/haveyoursay to let the Government know that these roads need upgrading now. Furthermore, there was zero funding to install vital traffic lights at Spinnaker Drive intersection and no commitment to bring forward the installation of traffic lights at the highly dangerous Old Toorbul Point Road intersection. To top it all off, 5 new taxes were introduced including a waste tax, wagering tax, land tax, property investor’s tax and car stamp duty. The pinch on household budgets is already being felt with increasing hikes to the cost of electricity, water and car rego. Up they go! It should be of concern to us all that the State Debt is set to hit $83 billion, a sorry legacy that will be left to future generations to pay off. To add insult to injury, the Government is saying they are investing $30 million in road infrastructure in the electorate however when questioned further on this resounding statement by the Premier, I can reveal $21.7 million of this funding is directed at safety barriers from Beerburrum to Caloundra Road interchange (hardly the Pumicestone Electorate); $400,000 was to resurface 1km between Tibrogargan Creek and Johnston Road (again not the Pumicestone Electorate) and five projects they are claiming have already been completed during the last term of Government! The Queensland Government needs to get its facts straight, work out where the Pumicestone Electorate actually is and fess up to neglecting our road infrastructure needs.

To read the full response from the Government contact my office.
