I wish to apologise to anyone who took offence by my actions during the 2017 ANZAC Day Parade. I am at a loss to understand why no one contacted me with their concerns then or in the following 12 months. My actions were not intended to offend, nor were they political. These flags are displayed in every Commonwealth building in Australia. I attend ANZAC Day services to honour Australian and New Zealand service personnel’s sacrifices to give us the lifestyle we enjoy. I am a decendent of war veterans. And I further acknowledge the additional hardship faced by the indigenous servicemen that returned who could have a drink in a pub when in uniform but when they were in civies they were refused a drink due to the entrenched racism at the time.

The good news is that some sympathetic Kiwis have given me a large New Zealand flag for next year to represent the NZ on ANZAC Day. I am pleased to see the R.S.L. has gone some way to encourage the Aboriginal community by supporting a local Aboriginal artist.

But what of the children who got up early, put on their best clothes and were excited to take part in the parade in the vintage car as they had done so in previous years? What a memory for them. To be knocked back at the start and being told they couldn’t have the flags and being photographed in the car by police as though we were terrorists. I thank many in the community who were also shocked at the treatment we received.

Dear Editor, In issue 24 of The Island and surroundings page 2 Simone Wilson our local M.P. is calling on our State Government to control petrol prices by monitoring them. I cannot see anyone controlling petrol or any other prices.

On 8th December 1973 the Whitlam Governments referendum on Prices and Incomes was defeated in every State. In my view that put an end to Controlling prices of commodities and the workers’ wages. Another referendum would be the only hope of changing the current laws.

there may be confusion for other drivers, indicate. Unfortunately there are many drivers who are unaware that their car contains an indicator device and fail to indicate at all in any situation. There are several quite confusing roundabouts on Bribie Island and it is my opinion that my intentions should be clear to other drivers when I am in any given situation. This does mean sometimes over indicating. I believe that the Police also subscribe to this attitude as I have also seen them indicating when going straight ahead on some of Bribie Islands roundabouts. I am reminded of the old saying “It is no good being right, and dead”.

I recognise that the State Government and the Moreton Bay Council have no plans for the duplication of the bridge, however I believe it is up to us to take whatever action may be necessary to get this project placed on the Government agenda sooner rather than later. There may well be some novel or innovative means of funding the bridge if we put our heads together.

With respect to the Bribie Island road I must say that I travel this road to the highway at least 3, sometimes 4 times a week. In normal and moderately heavy traffic I have not been aware of any real inconvenience caused by the traffic lights. Travelling at 80km per hour one usually has plenty of time to slow down when seeing a red light up ahead. Of course, unfortunately, there are many people who still have not realised that some areas of the road are no longer 100km per hour. I can certainly understand that for these people the traffic lights are a major inconvenience.

I do not include Tony Bell in these last remarks. I do however feel that traffic lights at the Old Torbul Road intersection may provide considerable inconvenience.

On another matter, I have noticed that on some weekends in particular now the Bribie Island road travelling to the island can resemble a “carpark”. It seems to me that, perhaps due to the opening of the Sandstone Point Hotel, the Bribie Island Triathalon and the increasing population on the Island; the

TAVAS Museum is now open for any aviation history enthusiast at Caboolture airport, see the first 25 years of aviation history close up.

TAVAS over the last 3 years have built full size flying reproductions and replicas of the aircrafts, you will see the Fokker Dr.I, Bristol F.2B, Fokker E.III and many more aircrafts all rebuilt to perfection or near exact. Each member of the public becomes engrossed in a truly exceptional, interactive, aviation experience.

Andrew Carter, Natalie Gochel and a fantastic team of aircraft owners and enthusiasts rebuilt the aircrafts from scratch. The Museum is now open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 3pm. The cost $15 per adult, $10 per child & $45 per family.

Beachmere Community Fitness Centre If you’re thinking of spending some time improving your general health and well-being, the Beachmere Community Fitness Centre Inc. is the place to go, where their motto is “Get the Personal back in Personal Training.”

This Not For Profit organisation commenced operation in January 2018 with assistance from various grants and funding. It is located at the Sports Centre, 57 Rogers Street, Beachmere and is fully insured and equipped with the latest gym equipment; treadmills, cardio machines, bikes and all the weights and boxing training equipment you’ll need.

Chris Malivore operates from the Centre and is a qualified Personal Trainer who can custom design a Fitness, Boxing, or Strength Training Programme for

Community you. Chris also runs Boot Camps if you are more into group fitness. Any of the friendly team will introduce you to the Centre and all the equipment available.

The Gym is open for adults of all ages and fitness levels. Children between the ages of 12 to 16 need to be supervised by a parent or guardian to ensure their safety. The cost to clients starts from $6.50 a week to $220 for a full year. The Centre does offer Sporting Club members, Pensioner and Student discounts. Turnbull Budget shortchanges Queensland Queensland has been left with the crumbs in last month’s Federal Budget, with re-announcements and hollow promises taking centre stage.

Deputy Premier and Treasurer Jackie Trad said that the Budget showed a lack of awareness about Queensland.

“The Turnbull Government again showed that they have no idea about Queensland,” Ms Trad said.

“All we were asking for was a fair go. It’s what Queenslanders deserve from their Government.

“But unfortunately, this Budget saw more of the same from the Malcolm Turnbull and the LNP, with big promises for New South Wales and Victoria and Queensland left with the crumbs.

“While working people got crumbs, big business got an $80 billion handout.

“That’s $80 billion that should be going to schools, hospitals and transport in Queensland, not into the pockets of banks and developers.

“There wasn’t a cent for critical programs like the National Partnership on Remote Indigenous Housing (NPARIH), which will disproportionately impact some of Queensland’s most disadvantaged communities.

“There was zero funding for projects like Cross River Rail, which will get people home faster and deliver thousands of jobs in one of Australia’s fastest growing regions.

“There was nothing for the Rockhampton Levee and the Townsville Port, important infrastructure measures that we’ve already committed money to.

“The big ticket promises the Turnbull Government are making are on the never never, the majority of the money won’t even be allocated for up to four years meaning Queenslanders will be waiting years for the Commonwealth to deliver on their promises.

“The major road projects promised on the M1 and the Bruce Highway won’t receive major funding allocations for at least four years.

“The hyped $1bn urban infrastructure fund is a dud for Queensland – $0 this year and only $40m over the next four years.

“What’s clear from this Budget is that Malcolm Turnbull only has a plan for his re-election, not a plan for the nation.”

Queensland a big winner in Federal Budget A massive infrastructure spend for the state, tax cuts and long-term tax reform, an aged care boost and hundreds of millions to protect the Great Barrier Reef form the centrepiece of a Federal Budget that really delivers for Queensland, LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said when the budget was announced last month.

Ms Frecklington said state Labor’s reaction was sad but not surprising given the only thing Annastacia Palaszczuk cares about is getting Bill Shorten into

the Lodge – not helping Queenslanders.

“Labor’s reaction to the Budget has, to be frank, been unhinged,” said Ms Frecklington.

“It shows Annastacia Palaszczuk’s only mission is to serve Bill Shorten and not Queensland.

“For months, Annastacia Palaszczuk has dared me to get Queensland’s fair share out of Canberra and last month this was delivered in spades. “$5.2 billion in infrastructure projects for Queensland is second only to Victoria and three times more than what New South Wales is receiving.

“I am calling on Annastacia Palaszczuk and Jackie Trad to put their toys back in the cot and work with the Federal Government to jointly fund projects such as the M1 upgrade, the Sunshine Coast rail duplication and the Bruce Highway upgrades.

“All Jackie Trad can talk about is Cross River Rail, a project that Labor said was fully funded.

“In fact Labor gave back the $10 million the Federal Government gave them for the business case.

“The other big infrastructure announcement which will be most welcomed is the $3.5 billion Roads of Strategic Importance initiative, including $1.5 billion for Northern Australia to upgrade key freight corridors in regional Queensland and increase productivity by connecting our major agricultural and resource areas with our cities and ports.

“Busting congestion will be a focus of a Government I lead so the $1 billion program to fund projects that get people home sooner will mean businesses can increase productivity and people have more time to spend with their families.”

Ms Frecklington said it wasn’t just major infrastructure projects set to benefit Queensland.

“As a regional MP, I know how important the funding commitments for mental health services and more doctors in regional Queensland is,” she said.

“Tax relief of up to $530 a year for middle and lower income earning individuals is of course welcome but it is the long-term seven-year restructure of the tax system which will have long term benefits for the majority of working Australians.

“Aged care has also received a timely boost. The $1.6 billion to go to providing an extra 14,000 high-level home care packages for seniors who want to remain in their homes is a great initiative.

“Protecting the reef has also been a priority of mine and that’s why the $500 million is such a good announcement for Queensland’s future.”

Some ships that served Bribie Ships such as the SS Garnet, SS Boko, SS Emerald, SS Beaver, SS Greyhound and others served Bribie Island as required, but in 1882 James Campbell commissioned Messrs. Sutton and Co. Ltd. of Kangaroo Point to build the paddle steamer SS Mavis.

A FOCAL POINT OF BRIBIE BONGAREE JETTY

It operated three days per week from Campbell’s wharf in Brisbane to Humpybong, Redcliffe, Bribie Island and Campbellville on Coochin Creek.

The SS Mavis was 75ft long, beam 12ft and draft 2ft 6inches when loaded. It had a 20 horsepower engine, a speed of 9 knots per hour, and carried 150 passengers. It was wrecked in 1885 in Moreton Bay but no details were available.

The SS Greyhound then served Bribie Island and Thomas Welsby in his book Bribie the Basket Maker recorded that Mr Campbell attributed the success of the Bribie Island Excursion phenomena to the SS Greyhound. She ran to Bribie 1901 to 1912 (K.E. Solley).

Week 2 –June 11th – 17th– Pathways (New Moon – Set Intentions) Happiness is the greatest gift you can give to yourself and one that only you are responsible for.

So many times we give our power away and make others responsible for whether they make you happy or not. If you’re not happy, change things up. Nothing is set in stone.

Happiness is a mindset. Start each day reminding yourself of 1 thing you are grateful for and watch how that simply act can open your heart to more joy within your world. Take your personal power back to follow the pathway that derives the most happiness for you.

Week 3 –June 18th – 24 – Courage Courage is following your dreams even with fears or doubts. That quiet inner voice will be presenting you with opportunities for you to access that inner lion/lioness.

That strength, wisdom and fighter within you will surface because you have decided that NOW is the best time for you to stand tall in your convictions of what you truly want, from a core essence. That place within that is not going to let you hold yourself back anymore. No excuses, no stories.

Week 4 –June 25th – July 1st– Love (Full Moon – Surrender & Let Go) The love you have for yourself sets the tone for which others treat you. Take an objective step back and consider what is your internal conversations are like? Are you being too harsh on yourself?

POO HAPPENS, BE PREPARED! Every evening I walk our dogs. Not that I have a choice in the matter, being Greyhounds they are experts at “hounding” me by getting under, around and over my feet as I move around the house until I take them for their walk.

They are also excellent watch dogs as they watch me like hawks and know when it’s exactly 5.30pm because that’s walkies time. I am accountable to my furkids, they know it, I know it, and so we go walkies!

So leads are attached to prancing hounds, and always, yes ALWAYS four doggy doo bags - 2 for each dog - just in case - go into my pocket. Now I am a total dog lover, any shape, size, type, and yet every night I am annoyed and disgusted by the amount of doggy doos that are left lying around by lazy, unprepared dog owners. Surely they know that the chances of a doggy “present pile” happening on a walk is 153.7% so why don’t they take doo bags with them? And why don’t these owners feel accountable for these piles? Probably because no one knows it is them that leave them behind.

But what does my disgust with unprepared dog owners have to do with being a Personal Trainer? Well, weird as it is, having enough doggy doo bags is really just the same as having a plan to stay fit and healthy. If you aren’t prepared, well then poo happens.

I can’t imagine being dressed in my motorbike leathers, gloves and helmet then grabbing my dogs and taking them for a walk without leads and doo bags, it would be uncomfortable and frustrating.

I wouldn’t be ready or able to walk them properly, it certainly wouldn’t be fun and it would be embarrassing so I wouldn’t do it again.

Yet this is how some people decide to “get fit”. Suddenly something happens, usually it’s the discovery that their clothes are mysteriously shrinking, and it’s now time to lose weight and get fitter.

But they don’t plan how, when or where to start. Off they go for a walk without water, in an old pair of shoes, along a path or beach, for “a while” while stopping to take pictures of the view. They do this once because that was a day they had spare time. The next day their legs are a bit achy so they skip the next four weeks till their legs “recover” then they leave it for another month because it’s been too long since last time and they don’t want achy legs again. Weirdly, even after all this effort, their clothes keep shrinking.

They haven’t put aside times each week to walk. They haven’t made sure that their shoes are right for walking so their knees are put under stress and they don’t know what distance is the right starting place for them. They feel frustrated, uncomfortable and glad they didn’t tell anyone because it would be embarrassing not doing what they said they would.

Having a fitness plan ensures you succeed in getting the results you want. Having locked in times for your fitness plan is the number one thing

Senior Gentle Balancing Exercises Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair or a kitchen bench for support, please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements stop! Don’t try these balance exercises alone if you concerned about these exercises or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Balancing exercises are fun but they can also be challenging. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the new experience and while you are asking your body to do something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok!

Really! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below are the type of gentle balance exercise we do in our Heartmoves classes. When the exercises work one leg at a time – think about your body, does one hip have better movement than the other?

Is one knee more stable/stronger than the other? Take each exercise slowly and carefully especially if you use a cane or if walking and turning are difficult. If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember, balance training can be a fun activity but will only show benefits if it is done regularly.

Small changes can make a difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your balance. So use your chair or your kitchen bench, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

CALF RAISE

Use a chair or kitchen bench for support – but do not lean as chair may tip or slide Stand with toes in a straight line and feet slightly apart Raise up on your toes and hold for a count of “one and two” Lower heels back to ground and hold for a count of “one and two” Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest.

SIDE HIP RAISE

Use a chair or kitchen bench for support – do not lean as chair may tip or slide Support with the leg closest to the chair/bench try and keep this knee slightly bent Lift “outside” leg outward from the chair – only as high as YOU comfortably can! Hold for count of “one and two” Lower back to ground and rest Repeat slowly, only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Rest

HEEL RAISE AND PUSH

Use a chair or Bench for support – do not lean as chair may tip or slide Support with one leg and try and keep this knee slightly bent Lift other foot up slowly until as close to your knee height as YOU comfortably can. Push back through your heel. Lower foot to ground then repeat movement. Change legs and repeat exercise, remember one leg may move easier than the other, and one leg may support you better than the other, move carefully and slowly. Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

SEATED LEG RAISES

Although these are done seated they will help strengthen your leg muscles and help with your balance. Lift one lower leg at a time up to a point that is comfortable for you and imagine you are pushing through your heel. Hold for a count of “one and two” Lower your leg and repeat with other leg Remember one leg may be more flexible than the other leg – that is ok! Repeat slowly only do as many raises as you feel comfortable doing up to 10 each leg. Rest

you must do to succeed. If you try and “find time this week” it’s never going to happen. You will always find something else that will seem more important and before you know it another month has past and your clothes have mysteriously shrunken even more.

The reason our clients book into our circuit classes is so they know they are expected in that class. If they aren’t here on time we phone them to see where they are, to keep them accountable and also check they are okay. Being accountable is number two on the “must do” list of things to make your fitness plan work. If no one knows you are attending a class or going for a walk then no one knows if you didn’t do it either. So you won’t feel embarrassed by not doing what you said you would.

Vegetarian Vitality From a naturopathic and nutritional point of view, the big question is, do you get enough nutrients from a vegetarian diet to maintain optimum health . The general answer to that is yes. Of course if you are a vegetarian who bases their diet around hot chips, pizza shapes and mars bars well, no that’s not going to cut it, funnily enough. If you choose a variety of plant based foods you can provide your body with a huge and diverse range of all the essentials your body needs for functioning and good health.

Vegetarian sources of nutrients: Protein-growth, repairing cells and maintaining optimum health: Quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat, hemp seeds, edamame (young green soy beans), eggs, dairy, beans, lentils, rice, nutritional yeast, nuts, seeds, soy, spirulina, barley and oats. It is necessary to combine these foods in order to provide complete protein.

Fats- Good fats- brain and nerve function, mental concentration and memory, skin health: avocadoes, olive oil, nuts, seeds Carbohydrates-fuel and energy: fruits, vegetables, whole grains , legumes.

Iron-carries oxygen through the body and promotes resistance to disease and infection: Blackstrap molasses, dried fruits, edamame, green leafy vegetables, beans and lentils, nuts, cacao, seeds, spirulina, amaranth, oats, quinoa and spelt. Combine with vitamin C for absorption.

Queensland to publish domestic and family violence statistics

The Palaszczuk Government will publish regular court statistics about domestic and family violence, in its latest move to bring the crime out of the shadows.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath has launched the website to provide regular updates on cases before Queensland Courts, including the state’s specialist Domestic and Family Violence courts.

“The Palaszczuk Government has introduced a suite of legal reforms to help tackle this scourge – from introducing the new criminal offence of strangulation, to increasing penalties for breaches of domestic violence orders, to making domestic violence an aggravating factor in sentencing,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“We saw a dramatic rise in domestic violence charges when we first brought in new laws in 2015-16, because victims were finally able to come forward and know they would be taken seriously,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“Crucially, the data being published today is for the first time showing encouraging signs of stabilisation; the first tentative steps towards the longterm cultural change required to tackle domestic violence.”

“As a Government and a community, we have a responsibility to ensure victims are never afraid or ashamed to seek help.

“We must ensure they feel confident that when they seek assistance they will get the support they require.

“We saw the power of this message when our trial of the specialist domestic and family violence court at Southport first commenced, with a spike in the number of applications lodged.”

Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said

while the new statistics were disturbing, the fact that so many people were coming forward about domestic violence was positive.

“This shows that by having an open conversation about these issues, those suffering in silence are gaining the confidence to seek help,” Ms Farmer said.

“We have invested $323 million over six years to implement every recommendation of the landmark Not Now, Not Ever report to tackle domestic violence head-on.

“We have more counselling services available for survivors and their children, high-risk teams being established across the state and we have funded seven new shelters – the first to be built by a Queensland Government in more than two decades.

“These figures show that there is a lot more to do, but we are more determined than ever that no Queenslander should be forced to live with violence in their homes.

“It shows that more and more victims are aware that what is happening to them is not okay, and that there are many services available to support them.”

Mrs D’Ath said the data, which will be available through the Courts website, is commonly requested information used by a wide range of stakeholders.

“We hope this will provide timely and accurate information to service providers, researchers and journalists.

“The Government is also using the data to continue to improve our response to this scourge and raise awareness within the community.”

Mrs D’Ath said that tackling domestic and family violence remained one of the Palaszczuk Government’s highest priorities.

“We will continue to deliver reforms and frontline services which hold perpetrators to account and importantly support victims and prioritise their safety, giving them the confidence to seek the assistance they need,” she said.

Problem Intersection Requires Immediate Solution State Member for Pumicestone, Simone Wilson, is calling on the State Government to heed its own advice and install traffic signal lights at the highly problematic intersection of Spinnaker Drive and Bribie Island Road.

Ms Wilson said that the State Budget is just around the corner so it’s time for the Premier and the Minister for Main Roads to invest in this vital safety measure.

“Recently I asked the Premier to match the LNP’s promise to improve safety for residents that use the Spinnaker Drive intersection.

“The Premier’s response failed to recognise the pressing safety issue that this is, and her own Minister for Main Roads believes that building a U-turn facility at the Bestmann Road East intersection will solve this issue.

“This is simply not good enough.

Nowhere was there mention of installing traffic lights at the Spinnaker Drive intersection for the safety of motorists.

This picture shows the plastic and rubbish that often ends up in the ocean, causing large amounts of harm to marine life.

In the 21st century we live in a consumer orientated world. Each day enormous amounts of plastic are bought, only to be thrown into the bin. Consequently, this plastic doesn’t only end up in landfills but also in the world’s most important water way, the ocean. In fact, on a yearly basis the world produces around 300 million tonnes of plastic waste. This rubbish can end up in turtle’s stomach, around bird’s neck and being a non-biodegradable hazard. With the ocean covering 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, they are a crucial part for survival for all 7.6 billion people who inhabit this planet. The ocean provides food, energy and many different industries including tourism and fishing.

These industries are currently multi-million dollar, however with the current damage that humanity is causing, it’s unsure how long we will be able to maintain and sustain the ocean in order to keep these industries thriving. On the 8th of June, World Ocean Day, many non-profit organisations band together promoting the ongoing issues that are severely affecting our wonderful marine life and ocean habitats. The main goal of this day is to further raise awareness about humanities impact on the environment. Some of these issues including problems such as increased levels of ocean acidity and salinity, both of which make it extremely

hard for many organisms to survive and scientists are only now beginning to see the impacts, that were once thought to be non-existent. One of the largest problems that has been caused is the growing or lack of that is occurring in the Great Barrier Reef. Late in 2016, after a heatwave hit Australia, up to 30 percent of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef was declared dead. In the years to come, this number is only expected to grow. It is clear to see that the pollution and destruction of our oceans is only going to cause detrimental effects. It is so important that this issue is not taken lightly, and everybody steps up and puts effort into helping keep the oceans clean, healthy and most importantly living. Even here on Bribie Island, the effects of pollution and plastic can be seen. With Bribie being a common place to see a large variety of marine life including turtles, dolphins and dugongs it is of the upmost importance that our waterways are kept clear. Everything we do to our environment can affect our ocean, especially because we live on an island.

Lonely Ghosts of Umbrawarra

Umbrawarra Gorge is about 30 km West of the old gold mining township of Pine Creek, which in turn, is about 200 km South of Darwin.

Like many geographical features in Australia’s Northern Territory, its presence was a complete surprise.

Located in rough, savannah country, it is a delightful and isolated gorge with vertical cliffs, deep water holes, little sandy beaches amongst paperbark trees and small, tinkling waterfalls.

It was a place for reflection, for long walks, rock hopping and swimming in the deep water holes found along the length of the gorge. It possesses the brooding silence of many Australian outback features – a sense that many ancient people had owned and passed through the place, leaving no trace of their passage except for fading ochre images, in sheltered grottoes along the cliff faces.

It was also the site of an ill-fated tin mining venture in the early 1900’s. Ill-fated, because typhoid claimed the lives of many of the miners, causing the mine to close. There are no apparent graves or cemeteries in the region, but rumour had it, that unmarked graves exist in the area.

It was also the place where the Tiger Tea Club went for the yearly ‘bush experience’.

Once a year the Committee of the Tiger Tea Club, a slightly raffish, jazz club in Darwin, spent a relaxing and leisurely weekend in the bush, and they arranged for Green Ant Safaris, owned

by Harry Longhorn and Billy Thursday, to plan and conduct the weekend.

Wah Lee, an old Chinese merchant from Darwin, was the Club Treasurer and this was his once a year bush experience these days.

Florence Anne, the Club Manager, was not an enthusiastic bush camper but she enjoyed this annual event, and arrangements had been made for the Tiger Tea Club to carry on without her for the weekend. Harry Longhorn and his full blood Aboriginal business partner Billy, would bring their female companions, Carol and Sindy Soo, a tall, elegant Tiwi woman. They too, all looked forward to relaxing without having to worry about ‘ safari clients ‘ They all left Darwin in three troop carriers at 1030 hrs on Friday, 25 October, giving themselves three hours to reach the Gorge area.

They did this comfortably, the main highway was good for fast travel, and the dirt access road was no challenge for the Toyotas and the skilful driving of Harry, Billy and Terry.

Five two-man sleeping tents were pitched, and a large tarp was hooked up between some trees to provide daytime shelter and a place to eat. By the time camp was set, it was late afternoon… time for a swim.

A short easy walk through honey grevillea stands alongside trickling streams brought them to a delightful billabong. Deep, with little sandy beaches flanked by paperbark trees on one side and steep red cliffs on the other. The billabong was about 20 metres wide at this point. The pool was fresh, sweet and bright; perfect for swimming. ‘ Do you think we shall see any bunyips? ‘ Lyndal asked Terry as she slid into the water, wearing a modest green bathing suit.

Wah Lee heard them, and when he reached a rock on the far side, he stopped and turned towards them. ‘ Bunyips are like dragons, some are good, and some are bad. Four claw dragons are not as good as five claw dragons – same for bunyips.

Where they live and what they look like is important. ‘ ‘ Hey, Wah Lee! Where does all this Bunyip knowledge come from mate?, Chinese Dragons, OK! But Bunyips? ‘ Terry yelled out to his old friend.

‘You can’t even begin to know how much I know about these things,’ the old Chinese man said quietly. ‘ Never think that these things aren’t around, you may not be able to see them, but that does not mean that they are not there, not at all.’

‘Well I agree with that,’ Sindy Soo nodded her head.

The conversation was dramatically interrupted by the harsh, screeching of about 15 large, black firetail cockatoos – one of the most distinctive sounds of the outback. ‘ See.’ Billy said to no one,’ They are saying hello and telling all the spirits around here that we have arrived.’

Another 30 mins or so and they were all heading back to the camp. The sun was going down, and there were things to be done. It was a warm night so big campfires were not an issue, but a fire to sit around and stare at was started.

Cooking would be on gas, and Florence Anne

had volunteered something special.

“What is so unique about the menu? ‘ Wah Lee asked. ‘ It is a surprise, but you will love it!’ Florence Anne ruffled Wah Lee ’s crew cut. ‘ It is not respectful to ruffle old Chinese men’s crew cuts.’ Wah Lee pointed out.

For a while, they sat and stared into the fire, each occupied with their private thoughts and comfortable with each other’s company, without having to make idle conversation. Florence Anne busied herself in the tarp/kitchen and announced that dinner was ready. ‘ Now, we shall see.’ Wah Lee rubbed his hands together.

Florence Anne produced, what she called, one of her Ivory Coast curries. This one filled the air with delicious aromas of mango and sweet curry spices, accompanied by Jasmine rice. ‘ Jesus.’ Sindy Soo commented. ‘ I could live for one thousand years and never be able to cook rice like that! ‘ No one replied they were all eating, Florence Anne included.

As the dishes were being cleared away, they heard a menacing rumble away to the North West. Everyone looked up, towering in the moonlight was a colossal cumulonimbus storm cell. Not close to them, but not that far either.

Harry, Carol, Wah Lee and Florence Anne decided to take a slow walk down to the creek crossing at the entrance to the gorge – the others retired to their tents.

Water still flowed over the causeway, and it reflected the electric blue lightning as it flickered around the rim of the gorge. The four walkers stopped at the causeway and were staring about at the lightning display when Florence Anne spoke out sharply. ‘ Look there! , She said pointing to the opposite side of the causeway, about 50 metres into the gorge.

Their eyes followed her pointing arm.

Carol gasped softly, Harry’s eyes narrowed and Wah Lee’s widened.

Standing, poorly silhouetted against the red cliff and illuminated by the flickering lightning, were two dark figures. Wearing long coats and widebrimmed hats they appeared to be watching the causeway. Their faces were hidden in shadow and their bodies seemed to lack substance, nothing specific, just like holograms improperly formed. They were eerily stationary. Florence Anne moved forward about to challenge them when Wah Lee stopped her dead. ‘ Don’t move! Don’t speak! …Just watch, we don’t know what we are dealing with here. ‘ Carol gripped Harry’s arm and stared transfixed.

Harry’s eyes were busy sweeping the immediate area, trying to form a point of reference for the wavering figures – something he could measure them against, but he couldn’t pin them down.

He began to move slowly to his right, froze when he trod on a stick, which snapped. In the split second that he looked down at his feet and then up again, they were gone.

Nothing……?

Wah Lee let out a long sigh.

Wah Lee strode purposefully back towards the camp, beckoning the others to follow. ‘ Back to camp, then I shall tell you what I think.’

Once they had settled around the campfire, armed with Tiger Beers, Wah Lee with a generous cognac, Florence Anne queried, ‘ Well? ‘ ‘ Somewhere near that spot is at least two unmarked graves; we saw the spirits of the occupants, they are sending us a message. I do not believe that they are harmful spirits.’ Wah Lee spoke with quiet sincerity.

Florence Anne stared at him incredulously. ‘ I can’t believe that I am sitting here, calmly discussing spirits, GHOSTS!!! For Christ’s sake, just like we are talking about a football match? I mean how do you know that what we saw were spirits, Huh? ‘ Wah Lee had a soft smile on his face as he poked the fire with a stick. ‘ I have told you what I think. I cannot tell you why they were there tonight. However, I suggest there are some things we could do…it may provide some answers.’

The storm had moved away to the South East – the temperature dropped slightly, it was dead calm, bright moonlight.

The ashes of the campfire suddenly spiralled into a thin vertical column accompanied by a soft, sighing and whispering. It lasted a few

seconds then settled down. ‘ It is OK. We shall help if we can. ‘ Wah Lee whispered into the night.

Breakfast the next morning was a subdued affair.

They were all sitting around, munching on toast and sipping from pannikins.

Carol seemed the most eager to get on with something. ‘ Let’s go, everyone – let’s check this thing out.

Wah Lee, what are we going to look for, mate? ‘ ‘ Well, we are going to see if we can find some evidence of graves in the area where we saw the shadows, ‘ he said, ‘ I don’t know exactly what it will be…if it is there and if we are patient, then we shall find it.’

Breakfast ended quickly, and they all moved towards the causeway. As they stood there, Florence Anne pointed out where she saw the two figures. Two Honey Grevilleas marked the spot, about 75 metres into the gorge, up against the bottom of the red cliffs. Daylight showed a small jumble of rocks at the base of the cliffs, which were about 50 metres high.

Wah Lee directed with some authority. ‘ Harry, you take Carol, Terry and Lyndal; search the ground around the base of the cliffs.

Florence Anne, you come with me, we are going to walk along the top of the cliffs and see what we can see. Everyone OK? ‘ Off they went. ‘ Harry? What am I supposed to be watching out for? ‘ Carol queried, ‘ Give me some clues.’

Harry sighed and lent against one of the Honey Grevilleas. He closed his eyes. ‘ Watch out for piles of stones that are mounded in circles or rectangles. Look on the tree trunks for names, initials, dates, and arrows or blaze marks. Maybe even an old cross or something… anything that is not natural lying about on the ground. It might give us a clue.’

They searched quietly about.

Wah Lee and Florence Anne padded along the edge of the gorge, overlooking the others, searching below. ‘ You seem quite sure about this.’ Florence Anne put her hand on Wah Lee’s thin, wiry shoulder. ‘ I am.’ He said.

Nearly two hours had passed, close to midmorning, when Wah Lee took hold of Florence Anne’s hand and said. ‘ So! Now we can do something.’

He was pointing towards two parallel shallow depressions in the ground. They ran East/West, were about two metres long, and, were beneath the singing foliage of an old ironwood tree. ‘ They are graves! They are! Wow! ‘ Florence Anne was excited.

She came alongside Wah Lee, who was standing at the foot of the two depressions. There were no markers, no stones and no evidence of human presence at all. That they were looking at graves, however, was indisputable.

They were old. Shelter from the overhanging foliage had retarded growth of shrubs and weeds.

Otherwise, they would have become overgrown long ago and would have been unrecognisable. ‘ Call the others.’ Wah Lee spoke quietly to Florence Anne.

She moved to the edge of the gorge, saw the searchers below and caught their attention by throwing a rock down near them. They all looked up and she beckoned to them.

Within forty-five minutes they were all standing at the gravesite.

It was quiet. ‘ What a beautiful place.’ Lyndal said softly. ‘ Look around! ‘ They were overlooking the gorge with sweeping views over East towards Pine Creek. ‘ Well, whoever put them here must have cared for them. You couldn’t pick a better place to stay forever.’ Carol was on her haunches, brushing twigs away from the end of the smaller depression. Her hand touched something hard protruding from the ground. ‘ What’s this? ‘ She whispered as she cleared the soil away.

She unearthed a small stone jar with a waxed cork stopper. She stood up, holding it carefully in two hands. The others gathered around. ‘ Open it very carefully.’ Harry said, offering her his bush knife to prise the stopper out.

The stopper popped out easily, and she emptied a small leather scroll into her hand. It was tied with a thin leather thong. It was supple and unrolled once she untied the knot. Words were scratched onto it.

She read them out.

‘Two miners lie here. Victims of typhoid. They were mates.

The one called Mac is on the left.

The one called Dusty is next to him.

We can’t do any more. We have to leave here.

Everyone is sick.

Many have died.

Take care of them God. September 1904. ‘ ‘ My God.’ She whispered,’ after all this time.

Someone has found you.’ ‘ No, Carol. ‘ Wah Lee spoke slowly. ‘ They brought us here…maybe they felt we were the right ones. ‘ ‘ Now that we are here, we can do something about their graves, can’t we? ‘ Florence Anne asked.

And they did that.

They had shovels, rakes and tomahawks – they cleared the area from the undergrowth, they filled in the depressions, they mounded river stones and most important of all, they fashioned two wooden crosses from tree branches and soft wire. Before placing them in the ground, Harry carved their names, one on each. They dug a hole between the ends of the graves, lined it with stones and placed the stone jar inside the hole. They then sealed the hole with more rocks and moistened earth from a termite mound – it would set harder than glue.

Then they fashioned a fence, similar to a post and rail around the whole site. It took them nearly three hours…until early afternoon. Carol stood up from placing some wildflowers on each grave, put her hands on her hips and arched her back. She said. ‘ Right Mac and Dusty! There you go fellas! We don’t know you, but we think we might have had a passing acquaintance last night. At least you have got a proper home now. We will tell the right people where you are – so at last, you can rest in peace. And, by the way, if we knew who your folks were, we would tell them as well. But we don’t…sorry! ‘ ‘ Before we go I would like to say something to these blokes.’ Terry moved towards the end of the graves. ‘ Gather around.’

They gathered around Terry – a little selfconsciously. Terry cleared his throat. It was a nervous gesture. ‘ Well…Carol said that we don’t know who you were and she is right about that. We don’t know you personally and we never can. We know some things. We know that you were miners, that you had the guts to come to this lonely place, live and work here amidst hardship. We know that you would have had family and that you would have had dreams for them and for yourselves. We know that it was men like you who helped open up this country…and we are grateful for that. We are sorry that it took so long to find you again – we are glad that we did.’ Terry paused for a while. ‘ Well, old-timers, we are going now, back to our camp and to our time. Thank you for what you did for this country. Goodbye.’

Florence Anne was deeply moved, she placed her hand on Terry’s shoulder and whispered. ‘ That was good, very, very good. ‘ As they moved slowly away, Harry said, shaking his head. ‘ That is one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me. I mean we probably did see their spirits last night, and they probably were sending us a message about where they were. But, why us? How did they know we would help? Hmmm…’

No one seemed to have an answer for that.

Late that afternoon, they were all lazing around in the paperbark billabong. Carol was talking to Billy and Sindy Soo about the whole thing, going over, in her mind how she felt about what happened. ‘ Anyway, we have done what we can today. It still seems a lonely place to leave them, don’t you think? ‘ Billy was about to say something when Sindy Soo grabbed his arm and looked up. She pointed to a large flock of black, firetail cockatoos. They had circled the graves and were now flying slowly up the gorge. Harsh, rasping screeches rent the air.

Sindy Soo softly spoke to Carol. ‘ There is your answer, mate. They have had a look at the graves and are saying thank you to us…dont worry…we shall look over them now. ‘ For reasons she could never explain, as long as she lived, Carol knew that she heard the truth.

A warm, peaceful calm spread throughout her body.

NORFOLK ISLAND HOW WELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW IT The Island is described as one that hides whispering winds spinning through the ancient pines. Its closest neighbour New Caledonia is 767 kilometres away, New Zealand - 1073. Norfolk has its own special language known as ‘Walkum’ meaning welcome and ‘Wataweih yorlyi’ translated to “hello and how are you”. The first inhabitants seem to be Polynesian and the discovery of the

island between 1150AD- 1450 AD, became a haven for tired sea farers.

Captain Cook is acknowledged to be the first European to discover the island at daybreak on October 10 – 1774. So as one can see, a lot could have happened between ‘discoveries’. Cook was quick to observe that Norfolk is paradise. In all of his travels the island is the only one he

ever gave this description to. Amongst other beneficial items he found on the island were the pine trees and flax plants that became extremely important in maritime masts. It was partly due to Cooks vision that reflected in Britain’s decision to settle Norfolk as a Colony.

Later in 1788 a small group of convicts were landed along with settlers and seamen under the command of

Lieutenant Philip Gidley King. It quickly became an agricultural settlement that supplied grain and salt meat to the New South Wales Colony. Convicts and free settlers continued to arrive until the population grew to 1100. The free settlers were given land grants in order to set up farms and the convicts once earning their free ticket could also choose to farm the

lands. However the settlement closed in 1814 due to the hardships of clearing the land. The absence of a harbour and the loss of the supply ship Sirius in 1790 did not help the situation. In 1825 the need arose to re- establish the settlement, but was a complete contrast to the first. Due to the extreme conditions of the land, convicts who had twice offended were sent here. So the labour supply was never

a problem and soon infrastructure such as bridges and Georgian buildings soon started to take shape.

The Pitcairn Islanders from some 6080 kilometres away were looking for a new home for their growing population.

Queen Victoria offered the people Norfolk Island and the entire community moved there in 1856 on board the

Morayshire.

Norfolk is a volcanic island, two other smaller islands lay to the south of Norfolk, Phillip and Nepean. The bird life is vibrant and in abundance and a diverse range of sea life can be taken from water to plate. On Sundays the Burnt Pine township markets are a hive of activity.

Everything from cycling and diving, clay target and pistol shooting and local hiking are readily available.

Attractions include Fletchers Mutiny Cyclorama and St Barnabas Chapel built in 1880. The best way to see Norfolk is by car. Climate is subtropical ranging from 19-28 degrees in summer and 12-21 degrees in winter. You will also need a passport and proof of your accommodation on arrival. Australian citizens can obtain a Document of identity available from Australia Post instead of a passport as can New Zealand Citizens. The currency is the Australian Dollar and both Commonwealth and Westpac branches are located in town but ATM’s are limited to one.

Libraries I will look at the libraries in our area and where libraries were closed. These closures have specifically impacted and disadvantaged older people in the region.

If we are not looking after our aged, what are we as a community?

Small Business - MBRIT Everyone, business or individual, should have a fair go and have an equal opportunity to conduct business in the Moreton Bay region. Support of all small business in the region is required to assist our economy and create jobs.

An enquiry into the running of MBRIT with its sponsorship arrangements and membership is something I will look into if elected.

Water and Rates Eric Shields Thank you for the opportunity to speak on what my Policies will be if I’m elected to Mayor of Moreton Bay, it’s good to speak on positive things for a change rather than the continued news of corruption in Local Governments.

I’ve watched and listened to the concerns of our local community and in most cases I totally agree with what has to be done in Moreton Bay. I will be looking forward to getting my policies completed if elected to Mayor.

Project Priorities I will be immediately asking all sitting Councillors to give me a priority list of projects that need urgent attention in their respective divisions. No one Division having priority over another.

This will also include planning and infrastructure needs to cope with our growing population.

My four years if elected to Mayor, will see a return to grass roots Local Government by not getting involved in large unfunded projects but to put rate payer’s money back into local areas.

Widening of Bribie Island Rd

assist re-election of councillors and the complete lack of transparency, will be a thing of the past if I’m elected to Mayor.

Flood Study I will undertake a study of the areas of Moreton Bay which are directly impacted by floods, or are flood prone. I will seek advice as to how of these areas can be made safer, with flood mitigation.

Nothing is more important than the safety of our residents. I will not have our water based communities penalised because of where they live.

Government Relationships I will seek a more open and meaningful relationship with both State and Federal Governments, as I truly believe that we need to work together to benefit our communities.

Tourism I will look at the enhancement of the entire region of the Moreton Bay and the Pumicestone Passage areas to attract visitors. Our water areas around Moreton Bay are just so beautiful and I intend to make enhancements to highlight this.

I will look into the widening of Bribie Island Road as it struggles to cope with continual increased traffic as the area grows. This has been a bone of contention for our local community for many years.

I want to attract the tourist dollar, boost small business, create new jobs and beautify our amazing region for all to enjoy. This is something very dear to my heart, I’d like to see our community out and about enjoying the paradise we live in.

Developers

Youth Unemployment

I will seek meetings with all the major developers in the Moreton Bay Region to assure them that I am committed to the advancement and development of Moreton Bay. Our region is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia and all projects will be approved on a case by case basis. There will be no favouritism based on future “gifts”, donations or Trust Funds.

Youth unemployment in the Caboolture region needs urgent attention. More apprenticeships and skills education is required to assist our young people to get jobs. More social amenities and drop in centres to give them places to meet and interact with one another, instead of being on the streets.

I’ll also let developers know very clearly that the days of developer funded politicians are a thing of the past and the community and our environment will always be the first thing taken into account when development decisions are made.

Corruption I will stamp out corruption in Local Government and give the community back a Local Council they can be proud of. Confidential meetings, lack of consultation, business conducted behind closed doors with secret trust funds to

I will set up a committee to look into the high cost of water and Council rates. I’ve seen the many complaints by residents about how high their utility bills are, I will address this problem and look at ways to lowering this burden such as an early payments discount and I will be speaking to Unity Water to find ways of helping our community.

A lot of candidates talk about it. I will do something about it!

Local Government Association of Queensland I will investigate the value of MBRC being associated with the Local Government Association of Queensland.

With an alleged culture of intimidation of Council staff reported, I will introduce a Workplace Relations Officer to ensure that we have a better and more productive work place that supports a happy working environment. Good staff give good service and that’s what I and many others want to see.

The Homeless I will look into the plight of the homeless in the Moreton Bay Region, with a view to supporting our charitable organisations that assist people in need.

I haven’t heard any politicians speak about how they will help the homeless and I’ve seen wonderful organisations like The Breakfast Club at Redcliffe who need our help and support.

With the many scandals that have been highlighted over the years involving this current Council and the clear corruption that has now been highlighted in Local Councils by the CCC Belcarra hearings, it surely must now be evident to everyone that we need a change in Local Government to what’s currently in place to serve our areas and families moving into the future.

I hope you like my policies and if elected I will do my very best to implement them for the good of Moreton Bay.

This will be at the finish of the Mini Masterpieces exhibition which opens May 28.

Starting at 11am, auctioneer Greg Spence will put all 93 Mini ( ie 6inch x 6inch) canvases under the hammer.

All proceeds raised on the sale will go towards Gallery improvements.

The MINIS are the third such annual exhibition the Arts Centre has run, highlighting a popular art form that has a big effect. The works include paintings, drawings, textile and glass art.

This year, there has been increase in the number of children’s and younger artists’ works entered.

If you cannot attend the auction, you can still have a stab at owning one of the Mini Masterpieces by entering a “Silent Bid’’ at the Centre’s front desk, once the exhibition goes up on May 28.

Mini Masterpieces exhibition curator Kate Goulding says it is a wonderful opportunity for artists to try their hand at smaller scale work.

And it’s a great chance for visitors to nab an original - or several - from talented local artists.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s Scamwatch website received almost 33,000 reports of threatbased impersonation scams in 2017.

Over $4.7 million was reported lost and more than 2800 people gave their personal information to scammers.

“When scammers impersonate government officials they may say you owe a tax debt or there are problems with your government benefits, immigration forms or visa status and that you must pay the debt or other fees to avoid being arrested or deported,” Mrs D’Ath said.

“These threatening tactics can be frightening, and they will often make you feel as though you’ve done something wrong and that you must urgently provide money or information to ‘fix’ the issue.

“The Office of Fair Trading has also received reports of scammers pretending to be from well-known organisations such as Telstra, threatening to cancel

“But it’s clear the complaints made to the ombudsman are just the tip of the iceberg.

“Brisbane drivers are not happy with their toll roads. They vote with their steering wheels every time they drive right past them.

“Our toll roads are getting too many complaints and not enough traffic.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington is calling on Annastacia Palaszczuk to back a Parliamentary inquiry into Queensland’s toll roads after the company which runs the network said it would be happy to participate.

“A Parliamentary inquiry is the first step to fixing this problem but sadly the LNP can’t go it alone.

Ms Frecklington said it was clear the state’s toll infrastructure was failing to cut congestion as originally intended.

“The system isn’t working and we need to fix it,” Ms Frecklington said.

“I welcome Transurban’s agreement today to working with an inquiry – all we need to make it happen is Labor’s support.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk had to be dragged to the table on real-time fuel price monitoring and she was dragged to the table on supporting the Federal Government’s M1 upgrades.

“This time, I’m asking the Premier to get on board at the beginning and work with the LNP to deliver a better deal for drivers.”

Documents obtained through the RTI process showed GoVia (Transurban’s Queensland collection arm) generated more complaints to the toll industry ombudsman than the rest of the country combined in 2016-17.

“Labor has to back the inquiry too if we are going to get a better deal for drivers and bust congestion.”

Daniel Morcombe Foundation a step closer to home The Daniel Morcombe Foundation is a step closer to having a permanent home with the sod turning of their new facility at Palmwoods today.

Child Safety Minister Di Farmer who attended the sod turning said $900,000 in State Government funding had been provided to the Foundation to help them build the new facility.

“The work the Daniel Morcombe Foundation does every day is amazing as they strive to keep children across Australia safe, but we know their current location at the Big Pineapple is no longer suitable for them to continue working from,” she said.

“That’s why the Queensland Government has provided this funding to make sure they can continue to spread their child safety message and work with schools and families to keep more children safe.

“Bruce and Denise Morcombe have been fearless in honouring their son Daniel and have worked tirelessly for over 13 years to help children recognise when they might be in danger and who they can go to for help.

“As a result of their work more than 260,000 Queensland students have learnt how stay safe, and the Foundation has visited more than 1000 schools around the country.”

9 OUTDATED DÉCOR TRENDS & WHAT TO REPLACE THEM WITH While we love the idea of a timeless space, the ever-changing landscape of home decor makes achieving a classic home challenging. One day everything is covered in bold pink marble, and then the next it’s all about minimalism.

While we don’t subscribe to every trend, we do enjoy experimenting with them.

Four interior designers share their advice on exactly what’s in (and what’s out) right now. Are you ready to get ahead of the trends?

1.The outdated trend: Minimalism “There’s a way to establish a clean design aesthetic without sacrificing colour for pattern,” said Sasha Bikoff. “The ‘allwhite’ bare space never feels like a home in which people actually live, which hurts the aesthetic greatly.”

The replacement: Clean and modern “I prefer to have as little machinery as I can get away with in a kitchen to keep the aesthetic of the space clean,” suggested Hepfer. For a polished look, search for ways to keep major appliances camouflaged as much as possible.

4. The outdated trend: Accent walls “The trend of a single wall in jazzy ‘wow factor’ wallpaper seems tired to me,” indicated Katharine Pooley. “This unfortunate trend sometimes gives the impression that the budget did not quite stretch for the full desired effect.”

7. The outdated trend: Rose gold This metallic accent is everywhere, but Hepfer believes its time will be up soon.

“The pink undertone makes it a bit more difficult to coordinate with the rest of the room, especially if there is already a bold use of colour present”.

The replacement: Metallic accents “I like to accent a room with metallics because I think they bring a contemporary and glamorous feel to the space,” stated Hepfer. Go for timeless materials like gold and silver to achieve this look.

8. The outdated trend: Beige minimalism “The ‘sea of beige’ of minimalist interior design a decade ago created some very unattractive interiors,” adds Pooley. “They were just so plain.”

The replacement: Colour and mixed metallics

The replacement: Modern glam “Colour and pattern add such a charismatic look and a sense of warmth that beats minimalism every time,” explained Bikoff. Experiment with patterns and textures to create a clean yet dynamic room.

2. The outdated trend: Lack of colour and texture “I love a white moment or white walls but hate a strictly colourless palette.

Even in white rooms, not all shades of white need to be the same, and layering textures is very important,” added Vanessa Alexander.

The replacement: Texture wall Instead of loud wallpaper, try out a textured element. “I prefer to incorporate a polished plaster or more subtle textured wallpaper (like silk or grass cloth), as it adds interest and texture subtly,” said Pooley.

Trade in subdued beige for a tasteful blend of colours and materials. “I much prefer the trend that clients are now embracing: incorporating colour in all hues. It is so much more joyful. My projects tend to incorporate a lot of colours mixed with metallics and natural textures”. For example instead of flowers, place live coloured orchids around your home. They look fresh and chic and more contemporary than a bunch of flowers.

“White-washed spaces with pops of bright colours are definitely an outdated look that needs a break,” declared Bikoff.

“It’s been done so many times in so many ways that there is truly no other way to try to make this look fresh and different.”

“I love creating reflective moments with lighting, mirrors, and a few key pieces of art where I add in colour,” Alexander continued. She also recommends mixing metals, aged brass, or patinated steel and shades of black and brown.

3. The outdated trend: Industrial kitchen “No matter how luxurious the brand, I don’t think refrigerators, ovens, or dishwashers look chic in a kitchen, so I prefer to conceal them as best as possible,” stated Anne Hepfer. “The industrial look—the only aesthetic in which exposed appliances really do look good—is on its way out.”

6. The outdated trend: Midcentury modern Many would argue that this trend is here to stay, but Alexander has other opinions.

“I adore mid-century architecture but think the trend went a little overboard recently,” she revealed.

The replacement: Variety “I like to employ a blend of contemporary, custom/bespoke, and

QUEENSLAND residential real estate affordability is under threat as the Government’s stamp duty cash grab increased by $273 million from FY2016 to FY2017, ABS data for the financial year 2017 has revealed.

Queensland State Government coffers have received a plumped up injection of $3.278 billion in stamp duty on conveyances in FY2017, compared with $3.005 billion in FY2016.

This increase means more than 25 per cent of the total taxation revenue in Queensland is coming from stamp duty on conveyances.

When land tax and other taxes on property are added to the equation, more than 38 per cent of the total taxation revenue comes from property-related taxes or the equivalent to about $5 billion in FY2017.

Stamp duty on conveyances revenue contribution has increased from 17 per cent in FY 2013 to 25 per cent to June 30, 2017.

Stamp duty on conveyances is the secondlargest contributor to the Queensland coffers behind payroll tax, which delivered a hefty $3.695 billion last financial year.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the State Government was taking too much from the property sector.

“We have good affordability in our residential market and great affordability in our commercial market, but rising stamp duty costs are threatening that affordability,” she said.

“In residential real estate, hefty stamp duty costs serve to stifle housing mobility.

Upgraders and downsizers put off the next move because of the onerous stamp duty they will have to pay when they move,” Ms Mercorella said.

“An upgrader moving from a $500,000 home to a $750,000 home would be forced to pay an estimated $20,000 in stamp duty, on top of the cost of their new home, along with various costs associated with buying and selling property,” she said.

The Henry Tax Review found that stamp duty was an inefficient tax that led to housing problems.

The replacement: Bright colours Instead of simply introducing small pops of colourful decor into an otherwise muted space, invite colour (and lots of it) into all aspects of a space.

“The reality is simply that stamp duty is threatening our affordability,” she said. “The REIQ has long advocated for the abolition of stamp duty. It does the property sector no favours and the State Government is now in danger of killing off the golden goose,” she said.

9. The outdated trend: Farmhouse chic According to Bikoff, the farmhouse-chic trend is “as overdone as Edison bulbs.”

The style gained popularity so quickly that it couldn’t possibly last. In addition, Bikoff points out that the look often feels out of place. “Walking into a farmhouseinspired apartment in the middle of a bustling city just doesn’t seem to work,” she claims.

The full abolition of stamp duty would serve to increase housing affordability for all Queenslanders and result in a dramatic boost to property transactions. It would also help unleash a flurry of economic activity that would have a positive kick-on effect not only in real estate, but throughout the Queensland economy.

Songs that Influence Youth Songs, and various types of music, have a large influence on youth, and this is evident through a number of statistics, writes Domenic Barrett, year 8 student at Bribie Island High School.

Picture this. You are a teenager. You are quite rebellious, and all you want to do is put your headphones in your ears and listen to some awesome music.

Your parents have recently been worried about you, because they try to tell you the dangers of drug addiction, but you just don’t listen. There you are – listening to your music, and then comes on “A Team” by Ed Sheeran. At volume 100, you listen to the lyrics… “and goes mad for a couple of grams… But lately her face seems slowly sinking, wasting, crumbling like pastries.” It hits you – the negative impacts of addiction are vast and common. You rethink going to that party tonight. The song has won you over.

This is the case for thousands of teens across the world. Clearly, music has a tremendously positive impact on youths of today.

Music not only challenges peer pressure but it also has a significant influence in regards to lifting children’s grades. Take for example, an article by Livestrong dated June 13, 2017. It states that the Journal of Educational Psychology found that music lessons in childhood correlated significantly with better grades and a higher IQ in young adults. The Australian Music Association further found that music can help a child develop their reasoning and problem solving skills, as well as providing them with better retention skills and math and language performance. As can be seen through both of these articles, it certainly provides an advantage in the form of increasing quality of schoolwork.

Yet another way music helps the young people within our society is by minimising mental illnesses. In Australia, anxiety is the most common mental health condition, with on average 1 in 4 people experiencing anxiety and this is drastically rising in the age bracket of 1015 year olds. In the period of 1 year, over 2 million Australians experience anxiety, impacting their everyday lives. Believe it or not, songs can be a major helper to prevent anxiety. Through an analysis of statistics, it can be seen that listening to music can dramatically lift a person’s mood. And this is just another reason as to why music is extremely beneficial to youths.

The examples provided are not just the only positive influences; there are many more. We need a more gentle approach to teens listening to music – many articles express the bad effects of music on teenagers. But it is clear that the positive weighs out the negative. We must begin to promote music listening for teens, not promote headphone confiscation in schools. So teenagers, it’s time to tune in.

By the end of 2018, Queensland’s integrity regime will include a new independent body charged with investigating complaints against Local Government Mayors and Councillors.

New laws passed by the Parliament this month will see the Office of the Independent Assessor up and running before year’s end, with funding to be provided in next month’s State Budget.

Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Office of the Independent Assessor would work alongside the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC).

“As with the CCC, the Office of the Independent Assessor will have the power to seize documents and compel people to attend interviews, with stiff penalties applying for non-compliance.

“The CCC will continue to investigate corruption, while the Independent Assessor will focus on official misconduct.

“The new system is designed to put the brakes on bad behaviour long before Councillors reach the watch house door.

“What we have now is not up to the job.

It is convoluted, lacks teeth, and – given recent events – clearly fails to act as a sufficient deterrent for some Councillors.

“One of the biggest weaknesses of the current system is the requirement to lodge complaints directly with a Council’s CEO. “Understandably, potential complainants can be reluctant to ‘dob in’ Councillors, given CEOs close working relationship

with Mayors and Councillors.

MICK’S PATCH Gardening for Health and Vitality Well, the lawns have started to slow their growth finally as the sun moves further north for the winter. This is a great time of year to catch up on those maintenance tasks that have been simmering on the back burner on your; must- todo- list. The weeds have been growing prolifically ever since the rain periods arrived last autumn, and as a result those dormant weed seeds were ready and waiting in earnest for those luxury soil moisture levels to activate their germination requirements, and their mission accomplished indeed! It’s a lot easier to rip those flowering weeds out of your garden before they set seed and become next year’s problem though. I remember last summer I was driving betweenjobs on my maintenance schedule, and around 2 pm in the afternoon I turned a corner with my trailer in tow, and I noticed this beautiful manicured lawn on the right with the owner sitting comfortably in the middle of the grass with a small bucket, while dutifully pulling out weeds with one hand, and a glass of wine in the other. What particularly struck me in my twosecond glance as I coasted past, was the look of satisfaction on this woman’s face. I obviously don’t know whether there was actually wine in that glass, or just water, but her sense of joy was apparent, as I caught a brief glimpse of her smile, she seemed content, working and relaxing, at the same time on that fine summers day.

Last article, I touched base on the importance of hygiene, and how cleaning, sharpening, and sterilising your gardening tools will help to minimise the possibility of spreading pest and disease this winter. Now is still a good time to prune back any unthrifty plants in your garden. Its sometimes difficult to get the courage, to prune back hard, your prized flowering plants- like Hibiscus, which always seem to be in bloom, but if they have suffered from pests, that have inflicted damage to their foliage from the likes of Erinose mite, Scale, or Mealy bug, then now is a great time to prune all the dead and diseased growth off to a manageable height and shape, and then fertilise with composted manures or organic based fertilisers now, (I tend to use these more regularly in small doses year round rather than a lot at once), for continuous benefits throughout the year.

Subsidies to celebrate a Queensland for all ages More than 100 seniors groups and organisations from across Queensland will share in $100,000 from the Palaszczuk Government for a range of events and activities to celebrate Seniors Week 2018 from 18 to 26 August.

Minister for Seniors Coralee O’Rourke today (28 May) announced the recipients of the subsidies, congratulating them on stepping up to help celebrate a Queensland for all ages during this important week.

“Seniors Week is one of the most

prominent activities in Queensland’s calendar for older Queenslanders, celebrating our age-friendly communities and building stronger intergenerational relationships,” Mrs O’Rourke said.

“The successful recipients of these subsidies, including community organisations and local councils, will host a series of diverse events and activities right across Queensland for Seniors Week.

“This year, Seniors Week will again embrace the theme ‘Celebrating a Queensland for All Ages’, which reinforces our commitment to create an age-friendly Queensland.”

Sally has been caring for Australian wildlife most of her life, having been brought up on a farm and seeing the need for intervention in moments of crisis. When she lived with her husband on Bribie Island there were no wildlife carers in the area and, on one occasion, after a particularly bad hail storm they cared for 68 injured birds. Sally has worked at the Australia Zoo Wildlife hospital which has given her excellent education and training on the needs of injured Australian wildlife. The Zoo hospital will treat wildlife, including examination, procedures and medication, for free.

Sally also uses the proceeds of the Beachmere Op Shop to support youth in crisis, the homeless and victims of domestic violence.

BRIBIE’S GOT YOUR BACK State Government commitment to tackle Domestic Violence

The State Government has fulfilled its promise to fight domestic violence with 24 new specialist Police officers across the state.

And the frontline officers will be backed with a $133 million commitment to help women and children experiencing domestic violence.

Police Minister Mark Ryan said the 24 Police officers would work as domestic and family violence coordinators, fulfilling an election commitment.

“These officers will be allocated throughout Queensland where they will provide specialist education and training to operational officers and assist other government and non-government agencies to better

address domestic violence-related issues,” Mr Ryan said.

Mr Ryan said this would lift the number of DV coordinator officers from 30 to 54.

“Our Police are dealing with domestic violence on the front line every single day, and these coordinators will provide them with the support they need.”

“The fight against domestic and family violence has reached a critical point, ” Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said.

“Three more shelters will soon come online, bringing to seven the number built by the Palaszczuk Government.

These are the first shelters built by a Queensland government in more than two decades.”

Ms Farmer said the new shelters, on the Northern Gold Coast, in the Caboolture region and at Roma, will be a safe-haven for women and children who make the courageous decision to escape violent homes and will provide the support they need to rebuild their lives.

The Roma shelter, to be run by Save the Children with $560,000 in annual funding from the Palaszczuk Government, will open during the 2018-19 financial year and will provide five self-contained units.

“This year’s Budget from the State Government continues a $14.2 million investment to domestic violence services involving counselling services for victims, court-based support, sexual assault services, post-crisis support and a range of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“There will also be funding for a further two High Risk Teams in Mackay and Moreton Bay”.

2 pounds ground beef 1 can (16 ounces) refried beans 1 can (4 ounces) chopped green chilies 1 envelope taco seasoning 2 tablespoons hot salsa 12 ounces uncooked lasagna noodles 4 cups shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese, divided 1 jar (16 ounces) mild salsa 2 cups water 2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream 1 can (2-1/4 ounces) sliced ripe olives, drained 3 green onions, chopped 1 medium tomato, chopped, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in beans, chilies, taco seasoning and hot salsa.

In a greased baking dish, layer a third of the noodles and meat mixture. Sprinkle with 1 cup of cheese. Repeat layers twice.

Combine mild salsa and water; pour over top.

Cover and bake 1 hour or until heated through.

Top with sour cream, olives, onions, tomatoes if desired and remaining cheese. Bake, uncovered, 5 minutes. Let stand 10-15 minutes before cutting. Makes 12 servings.

keeps on catching on in Queensland One in five Queensland passenger vehicles is now using petrol with 10 per cent ethanol – a carbon reduction comparable to taking approximately 13,000 cars off the road.

Energy Minister Dr Anthony Lynham told Parliament today that 2.5 per cent of the regular petrol sold in Queensland in the last quarter of 2017 was ethanol, up from just 1.5 per cent when the Palaszczuk Government’s biofuels mandate commenced.

Assistant Tourism Industry Development Minister and Member for Gaven Meaghan Scanlon said before the Games began, the Gold Coast had already hosted 129 events and 35 training camps in new venues.

“We put the mandate in place to encourage industry to invest, innovate and create jobs as part of a cleaner, greener future for Queensland and a flourishing bio-manufacturing industry,” Dr Lynham said.

“The Commonwealth Games proved to the world that the Gold Coast is one of the best destinations to host sport in the world,” she said.

“The future for our biofuels and biomanufacturing industries in Queensland is clearly very bright.”

“We have state-of-the-art venues in one of the most sought-after tourism destinations on the planet – it only makes sense that people want to come here to play sport.

“The investment in the Commonwealth Events include: Games just goes to show it’s only a Labor • Australian transplant Games (Gold government that will take Gold Coasters seriously.”

Dr Lynham said the mandate had also achieved another milestone in the December quarter, with the first biodiesel entering the market, with volumes expected to increase in coming months.

“We’ve also seen the network of service stations supplying E10 expand to more than 600 - an increase of more than 260 sites in under two years.

“Now we need 80,000 passenger vehicles to swap to E10 to get to our three per

cent target - just over one-and-a-half Suncorp stadiums of car owners.

“I challenge Queensland drivers to make the switch, buy a tank of E10 and fill that virtual stadium.”

The Palaszczuk Government’s biofuels mandate requires the fuel industry to meet targets for the sale of bio-based fuels: three per cent ethanol for regular unleaded petrol and a half a percent biodiesel for all diesel fuel by 1 July 2018. The ethanol mandate increases to four per cent on 1 July 2018.

Dr Lynham said the biodiesel industry was still in its infancy, but the government was working closely with industry to tackle the challenges to growing the sector.

“Importantly, further investment is currently underway to improve the supply chain to enable biodiesel blending, storage and transport in Queensland,” Dr Lynham told the House.

Reef to boost Pumicestone Passage Fishing diving and fishing in Moreton Bay

The Palaszczuk Government has selected a regionally based Queensland contractor who will build a new artificial reef to benefit fishers and divers in Moreton Bay Marine Park.

Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman said that Townsville based company Pacific Marine Group Pty. Ltd. will install 38 purpose built structures by December 2018.

The 30 hectare reef will be built in waters 10-12 metres deep and will be situated near Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island, approximately 1.5 kilometres north of Adder Rock Camping Ground, managed by Minjerribah Camping Pty Ltd. “Diving and recreational fishing is about to get even better on the beautiful North Stradbroke Island coast with a $1 Million artificial reef project as part of the Queensland Government’s $30 million Marine Infrastructure Fund.” Ms Fentiman said.

“Within months of completion, divers will see an array of sea creatures around the purpose built structures, and within 18 months fishing will be improved substantially.

“This project will be a collaborative initiative between Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), the Traditional Owners of North Stradbroke Island and the Queensland Government.

Ms Fentiman said she has approved the location and uses for the reef after Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) led discussions through a working group.

The working group consists of representatives from the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC), Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol, Maritime Safety Queensland, the Queensland Seafood Industry Association as well as tourism, fishing, diving and environment groups.

QYAC CEO Cameron Costello said the artificial reef would be another step in recognising Quandamooka Country as a globally recognised eco-cultural tourism destination.

“For thousands of years, Quandamooka people have used fishing to build a livelihood for themselves, their families, and their communities.

“It is exciting to be involved in projects that see our people actively playing a role in creating future fishing and diving opportunities on Quandamooka country.

“I congratulate the stakeholders involved for the collective positive approach that has contributed to this project,” Mr Costello said.

Redland City Mayor, Karen Williams said she welcomed the State’s contribution to our marine infrastructure, and the tourism, business and recreational benefits it will bring to the City.

The Pumicestone Passage is teeming with fish throughout the year, and is an important breeding ground for fish, crabs and prawns. The ocean side of the island has just as much going for it. So where should you go?

Popular fishing spots along the Pumicestone Passage The Bribie Bridge provides a vital link between the mainland and the island, but it also offers anglers an easily accessible platform to throw a line in. The bridge can be tricky on a full flowing tide. At these times, it’s best to fish closer to the shore and only venture to the middle of the bridge when the flow is slower. Juvenile snapper and mulloway are the most likely catch.

Bongaree Jetty To the south of the bridge is the Bongaree Jetty. Here the water deepens to about 7.5m and is the main thoroughfare for a huge variety of fish. At any time you could encounter mulloway, juvenile snapper, bream, flathead, cod, parrot and Moses perch, to name a few. Tailor are also likely, but are seasonal from June until August.

The jetty is also popular with swimmers and jet skis, so it is best accessed very early or very late to avoid the crowds. Otherwise, cast off into the drop-off from the beaches on either side. Further south, at the bottom end of the island, Red Beach is a good option for winter whiting.

North of the Bribie Bridge, at Sylvan Beach, you can fish from the beach or hire a boat; while at Banksia Beach it’s shore fishing for tailor, bream and flathead.

Further north again is Mission Point Camp Ground. This can only be accessed by boat, with the nearest boat ramp at Donnybrook on the mainland. This is where you’re most likely to find mangrove jack.

Beware.... Fines for fishing in Pumicestone Passage Before throwing your line in Pumicestone Passage, make yourself aware of the various fishing zones SEE LINK TO MAP BELOW. There is a green zone around Long Island, which is a strict no fishing zone, you can paddle or zip your boat through, just leave the fishing line in the vessel. The remainder of the passage, netting and trawling are strictly prohibited. If caught doing the wrong thing you will be fined.

Popular fishing spots on Bribie’s ocean side The ocean side of Bribie Island offers wonderful opportunities for surf fishing.

Woorim has summer and winter whiting, dart and bream. Just south of Woorim, Skirmish Point is popular for surf fishing and easily accessible.

North of Woorim is the 4WD beach access point. It’s possible to drive all the way to the Caloundra bar, however, you must purchase a Beach Access Permit, and book in advance for the campsites, as numbers are limited. From the beach you’re likely to catch dart, whiting, flathead and bream.

Bribie’s canal estates The canals can also provide good options for fishing on Bribie Island.

Between the Bribie Bridge and Bongaree Jetty, the entrance to the canals known as The Lock, is surprisingly good fishing, especially for mangrove jack; while the nearby beach has good whiting and flathead.

To the north, the Pacific Harbour canal system can yield great catches of juvenile snapper, trevally, bream and mud crabs, among others. At The Ripples, at the mouth of Pacific Harbour, you might also catch sweetlip.

Off the beaten track The further north you go along the Passage, the more remote and inaccessible the good fishing spots are.

White Patch is the last point before you’ll need a 4WD to access the inland tracks in the Bribie National Park and camp grounds on the Passage. Here you’ll be rewarded with juvenile snapper, bream, flathead, the odd mulloway and sand crabs.

NBL legends to dish out top tips at MSEC B’ball master class

Basketball royalty will visit the Moreton Bay Region these July school holidays when National Basketball League (NBL) legends Carl and CJ Bruton take their talents to Morayfield’s Sport and Events Centre.

The duo, who scored a combined total of more than 13,000 points and won

Bruton said many Bullets fans come from Moreton Bay and he couldn’t wait to meet participants and work with them at the clinic.

“Coaching the Bullets, I’ve seen firsthand the skill, enthusiasm and passion for basketball in the local area,” CJ Bruton said.

Locals continue to play bowls despite their club house being closed.

Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club might be doing it tough without a proper clubhouse at the moment, but it continues to grow its member base and draw more players each week.

Club President Bob Prosser says regular Thursday and Sunday competitions continue to be supported and members continue to join.

“We have visits in planned and we are getting a lot of support from across the Moreton Bay Region. Bowlers are enjoying the great weather and we have some big events planned for later in the year”, he said.

NBL hall of famer and father of the Bruton dynasty Cal Bruton said it was the ultimate opportunity for any young basketball player in the region wanting to learn from a championship coach and player how to elevate their game.

“As a family, we’ve been blessed to be involved with basketball at the highest level for more than four decades, and we can’t wait to share what we’ve learnt over the years with the next generation of Moreton Bay’s hoops superstars,” Cal Bruton said.

“During the two day clinic, we’ll guide players through the same drills that enhance the skills to become fundamentally sound, and teach them about the secret behind the Bruton family’s basketball success: S.W.A.G.” The camp is open to kids aged eight to 16-years-old, but spaces are limited and hoops fans are encouraged to secure their space as soon as possible.

“Not only will the kids pick up fundamental skills on the court, they’ll also gain valuable lessons they can take with them off the court and into everyday life.

Bribie Island Bulldogs AFL are the only undefeated team in Division 5 after taking care of Marcelin Old Boys at the Kennel on Friday 25, May. The Marcelin boys came to play early leading the Bulldogs into the half-time break, but after that the home team made amends for their poor start, winning the contested ball and coming out easy winners in the end 11.8.74 to 6.6.42.

Goals: Josh Bear 4, Dave McFaul 3, Tyler Gilmore 2 (from half-back) and singles to Craig Dickinson and Brett Camfield. Best players were Tyler Gilmore, Tate Gilmore, Thomas Watson, Josh Bear, Jack CooperJenkins and Dave McFaul.

The week prior saw the Bulldogs host the powerful Aspley Hornets, who came in this year as the team to beat. It was first playing second. The game was tight all night and low scoring, due to the pressure applied by both teams and the conditions the game was played under.

It was like it was being played in the English moors, with a low cover of mist covering most of the ground and at times it was hard to pick out some players.

Bribie came through in the end with a gutsy win 4.16.40 to 5.4.34. Bribie led at the first change 0.5.5 to 0.1.1. Dave McFaul kicked 3 goals and Mitch Kellogg kicked 1.

After 8 rounds the ladder is: Bribie Island 28 pts, Coorparoo 24, Aspley Hornets 20, Jindalee 16, Ipswich Cats 16, Yeronga South Brisbane 12, Marcelin Old Boys 4, Ferny Grove 4 and Springwood 4.

Friday, June 1st, Bribie are away to Jindalee then on Sunday, 17th June, they are away again to Ipswich Cats at 2pm at Ivor Marsden Sports complex.

The Bulldogs next home game will be on round 11 when the boys take on Springwood at the Kennel at 7.30pm.

The Irish have Arrived It will be a belter of a three-test rugby series which kicks off this Saturday 9th June at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.

Wallabies Coach, Michael Cheika is keen to represent a similar style of play which creates pressure and retains ball control. Although the Wallabies have played 33 matches against Ireland and lost only 11 tests, the trend and performance of Ireland has placed the Wallabies on notice. National Volunteer Week was celebrated from 21-27 May and there really is no finer example of community spirit than our very own volunteers right here in Pumicestone.

The thousands from all ages and walks of life who give so much to make our communities even greater places to live. From volunteer emergency services to Justices of the Peace, those who support the elderly and people living with disability, those who support families and children in times of need, those who protect our environment, our service clubs and church groups, the list goes on. My heartfelt admiration to all volunteers – you really are the backbone to our electorate.

ROAD UPGRADES

Our Beachmere and Bribie Island Roads need upgrading now – not in years to come. The Premier has all but admitted that upgrading Beachmere Road is not on the Government’s radar.

The Minister for Main Roads acknowledges the increasing traffic and crashes on Bribie Island Road but prefers studies over immediate action. The Bribie Island Road intersections of Old Toorbul Point Road and Spinnaker Drive are too important to delay and immediate solutions must be funded and works commenced to ensure the safety of all motorists. I have been fighting to have these issues addressed and I won’t give up, but I do need your help. COST OF LIVING HIKES

The Queensland Government fails to accept that continually rising the cost of living equates to an unmanageable toll on the household budget. This is particularly concerning here in Pumicestone where many residents are dependent on a fixed income. Last month I spoke out in Parliament against the Government’s further slug on our water bills – likely to increase by another 5% in our region!

After months of dithering, the Government finally heeded our call on our policy to implement real-time price monitoring to provide greater price transparency for motorists.

We are so fortunate to live in this beautiful part of the world and we like to keep our communities just as they are, pristine places we are proud of with surroundings we all genuinely care for.

Unfortunately there are a few that don’t do their part in keeping our community clean and litter free.
