2018 TIAS has some new initiatives which we are very excited about. First off, we would like to introduce to you our Bribie Island and Surrounds MEANDER map. The concept is to create an informative map that will draw tourists and day visitors to the region. It will be a pull-out section in the centre of the paper that our visitors and new locals can refer to. This initiative is designed to showcase our Pumicestone Region as a great tourist destination and we envisage small business, artists, crafters, farm stores and more will begin opening along our routes that we have earmarked. We as locals of the Pumiscestone Region need to look at this as “Our Business” working together to capture our share of the massive day visitor and tourist market from Brisbane and the world! The map is viewed as an added extra to our publication not a diversion away from our news and views. Advertising in the Map section is an “info-ad” rather than a hard sell advert. The idea is that the viewer refers to the map first, they then choose a destination and the stops along that choosen route. The number on the map is the same as the advert number which then gives them all the necessary information on that particular business. After speaking to a few businesses last week, the feedback is incredible. If you would like to get involved in the Bribie Island and Surrounds MEANDER Map please contact myself on 0447 007 966 or Roger (the creator) on design1@islandandsurrounds. com.au. We would like to get a committee together to assist us with creating the best and most detailed map in our region. What’s in it for our Committee? Free advertising for a year and full membership of the association for a year, if your required tasks are achieved.

Electricity prices are at a record high!!!!

“Rebates for a few, won’t make up for Labor’s record high electricity prices for everyone.

We all know our electricity prices are now at a record high and Queenslanders all need to speak up now for our energy prices to be reduced at an affordable rate, especially this summer in the heat and humidity being unbearable to live in. Many of us are not using our air-conditioning and fans to be comfortable because of the price of electricity and we simply cannot afford it these days. This affects us all in many ways and especially our senior community who simply cannot afford electricity these days.

“Labor has been using electricity like a secret tax and these rebates are just a re-announcement of smoke and mirrors cash splash.

Shadow Energy Minister Michael Hart Says

Large range to choose from come in and see for yourself!

“Wholesale electricity prices have spiked by 70 per cent on Annastacia Palaszczuk’s watch, costing Queenslanders hundreds of millions of dollars.“ “Labor is out of touch, Queenslanders aren’t wasting electricity, they have never paid more for it. “Labor needs to end its secret tax on electricity and stop trying to bribe a few with a smoke and mirrors cash splash.”

Help my dad walk again

On Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th of January the Solander Lake Bowls Club will be holding a twenty-four hour bowls challenge, titled “Help My Dad Walk Again. The fundraiser has been organised by some of the club’s staff members, Dan Pritchard and Jaydene Hughes and will help raise much needed funds for Dan’s brother-in-law, Jordan Grant and his “go fund me campaign. Jordan is 29 years old and is the proud and devoted father of two children aged eight and 10. Jordan is trying to raise $60,000 so he can make this dream a reality.

Dan Pritchard with Jordan Grant

In 2012, Jordan was in a tragic accident that left him wheelchair bound. He is now a C4 incomplete quadriplegic and unfortunately has had a complete life change. He was in hospital for 12 months but fought through strongly defeating the odds. His determination and strength and positivity clearly shine through as well as his great sense of

Community humour. He is living independently with permanent carers that assist him on a daily basis. His house has been modified to suit his needs so he can be comfortable. Jordan can move his arms, breathe on his own and talk. Everyday seeing improvements in strength, control and feeling. With this though comes complications and down days with nerve pains, catheter issues, temperature control and a lot more. His ultimate dream is to be able to undergo “stem cell treatment and intensive physio so that he can walk with his children again. You can help Jordan achieve his goal and show your support by attending the Solander Lake bowls club and supporting the two teams who are going to tackle the 24-hour challenge starting at 11.30am on the 27th and finishing at 11.30am on the 28th of January. Dan’s team will consist of Dan, Anthony Hughes and Trevor Stewart (Jordan’s dad)

will take on Jaydene’s team consisting of Jaydene, Charlie Neave and Alex Stewart (Jordan’s brother). There will also be twilight bowls on the Saturday evening and brekky bowls on the Sunday morning. There will also be heaps of raffles with a joint value of over $3000. Raffle tickets are available at the bar of the club. Members are asked to support this great weekend by entering teams in the twilight and brekky bowls events. You can also make donations at the club or directly to Jordan Grant’s go fund campaign “help my dad walk again, on Facebook. Dan and his team would like to thank all the businesses and people that have made donations. “We truly appreciate your help, this event really wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for your help, Dan said. So, come on everyone, let’s get to Solander and give this young man our support.

Anne McKinnon turned 88 on 1 January with an impromptu party at the Beach Shak in Beachmere. When the local community learned of her achievements and her milestone many turned up on New Year’s Day to wish her the very best. Anne was born in Glasgow, Scotland and trained to be a nurse at Glasgow Royal Infirmary. She married a Marine Engineer and lived in New York in the early 1960’s before moving to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. With time on her hands Anne volunteered for several years in Brazil and in 1972 moved to Australia to enable her older children to continue their education without travelling to boarding school. Upon her arrival in Australia she was awarded an MBE for Volunteer Nursing and Welfare Services to the British Community of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. Anne now lives with her daughter and extended family in Beachmere. Anne is just one of many men and women who live quietly in every community but who have an amazing story to tell.

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS By Damian Brown

It’s hard to believe that the Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club (BISLSC) has been serving the community for more than 93 years and will celebrate 10 decades (100 years) of community service in 2023. I had the pleasure to catch-up with Bribie Island Surf Club’s spokesperson and longest serving Official, Dianne Wells who has been part of the BISLSC for 27 years. As well as being a Distinguished Member of the BISLSC, Dianne Wells is an experienced and highly qualified Volunteer Surf Lifesaver and Leader having coached all surf lifesaving disciplines for 7 years from 1999 to 2006 and age managed a group of Nippers through all levels of surf awareness and surf safety from Under 8 to Under 14. Dianne spent some time talking about the BISLSC as well as providing me with an historic snapshot of the BISLSC based on a 75 Year Anniversary Memoir that was compiled by Peter Adams in 1998. The historic review showcases the 1920’s pictures of Harold and Bert Blake patrolling the Ocean Beach and talks

about the first clubhouse hut that was built in 1927. The historic review also shares the story of when the Brisbane Metropolitan Lifesaving Club responded to a request by the Caloundra Council by sending some of the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Members to assist with providing the very first Royal Life Saving Patrols on Kings Beach, Caloundra and the subsequent founding of the Metropolitan-Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club and the Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club in 1933. Prior to 1933, the Brisbane Metropolitan Club provided members to patrol Ocean Beach (Bribie Island). The historic snapshot also talks about the working relationship between the BISLSC and the World War II Army Department, when the Army Department ordered the closer of the Bribie Beach in 1942 and requested access to the clubhouse for Army purposes. Dianne Wells said, “The BISLSC has an extensive and proud history and has grown from strength to strength over the past 93 years.” In the 2016/17 period, the BISLSC significantly increased its membership which is the largest increase across the Regional Clubs and in terms of membership, BISLSC is the 8th largest club behind Mets Caloundra. Dianne Said, “We have approximately 558 members and about 130 active patrol members – of course we need many more active members to fulfil a variety of roles as Volunteer Surf Lifesavers at Bribie.” As a BISLSC Official, Dianne Wells is passionate about the opportunity and life skills gained by children and adults who chose to volunteer and participate in the Surf Lifesaving Family at BISLSC and across Australia. Dianne was keen to point out that like all team players, Dianne is a Club Member First and fulfils any role that is needed at the BISLSC to be part of a successful future.

It is worthwhile sharing some of the courses and awards on offer within Surf Lifesaving. The following awards are an extract taken from a BISLSC Member Award Record and highlights the diverse nature of Surf Lifesaving Training. Awards can include; Surf Coach Level 1; Surf Official Level 1; Surf Rescue Certificate (CPR Endorsed); Certificate IV in Training and Assessment; Design and Develop Assessment Tools; Design and Develop Learning Programs; Participate in Assessment Validation; Plan Assessment Activities and Processes; Plan Organise and Deliver Group Based Learning; Plan Organise and Facilitate Learning in the Workplace; Provide Work Skill instruction; These are just a handful of possible awards available to members of Surf Lifesaving Members. I was fortunate enough to be handed

can engage with the BISLSC in 2018. Where is BISLSC Located? Bribie Island Surf Club is located on the eastern side of Bribie Island, the closest surf beach to Brisbane. Bribie Island Surf Life Saving Club has been patrolling Woorim Beach, Bribie Island since December 1923. What is the most exciting thing about being part of BISLSC? After being involved with BISLSC for over 27 years (Since 1991), the most rewarding part of being part of BISLSC is the people you meet and the opportunity to teach, mentor, help and share knowledge with other surf lifesavers. The other important aspect in a club is the quality of members which is very high at BISLSC. I enjoy the challenge of an ocean swim and keeping fit. How will the BISLSC manage 2018 Australia Day? On this coming Australia day, 2018, one of our club’s ten patrols, (each patrol will consist of approximately of 9 -11 people) will include patrolling the Brennan Park venue water area to their volunteer duties as well as another group being required to patrol at Woorim beach. It will be a tough few days.

a short article from BISLSC entitled, “Memories of the Days in the Surf Club Years as a Girl” written by Vicki Howard (Fernley) in 2013. The story is very relevant given that females were only accepted into Surf Lifesaving Clubs in Australia from 1980 (37 years ago) and Vicki was one of the first Female Nippers to receive her Certificate in Resuscitation in Febraury,1981. This is an exert taken from Vicki Howard’s story who started at BISLSC at the age of 11 years. Vicki said, “The comrade and mateship we had with the male club members was great, it felt like one big family. The knowledge from training and first aid carried on with me right through my work life. I was often the paid first aid officer, I worked on a summer camp in America and even though I was employed as the nanny for the director’s daughter, I was often called in to patrol the water area. (As they knew my experience and training in the surf club.) I am so pleased I experienced the surf club years growing up. I’m sure it helped in moulding me with the confidence, knowledge and social skills which was and still is valuable in my adult and working life.” I asked Dianne Wells to answer a few questions about Bribie Island Surf Lifesaving Club and how the community

How do you gain knowledge, skills and awards in Surf Lifesaving? To be able to perform patrol duties and achieve award, all members must be proficient and able to complete a run swim run, be skilled in beach management rescue techniques and first aid and demonstrate and deliver preventative directions in public arenas. Members must be able to use multiple pieces of equipment and can achieve optional awards such as a Boat Licence. Can you undertake courses as a member of BISLSC? Yes, you can undertake many types of course. Most courses are delivered by

trainers within our club and our Sunshine Coast Branch. The skills and knowledge gained from being involved in a lifesaving club helps to build confidence, social and leadership skills, which are carried on throughout life. It is simple to become a lifesaver however to qualify for the surf bronze medallion requires participants to be over the age of 15 with a reasonable level of fitness. How can my family become involved in Nippers? Training and developing surf skills can begin as early as 5 years old. As age progresses so too does the level of knowledge and skill in surf awareness and safety, throughout the junior years at our family orientated Bribie Is Club. The club is also home to a large and very successful Junior Activities section, with a membership of approximately 200. Children from age 7-13 years enjoy this arena developing confidence in the surf, learning surf safety skills and having the opportunity to compete in the Surf Sports Arena. How do we join the Bribie Island Surf Club? To join Bribie surf club, contact can be made by email bribiesc@bigpond.com or come along and watch a training session for Nippers most Sunday mornings at Woorim beach over the summer months from September to March or phone during the admin office hours 34081188. The best way for a family to view the ‘Nippers in Action’ is to come down on a Sunday from 8.30am during the season Sunday - February and say hello. Thank you to the Dianne Wells, BISLSC Official, President BISLSC, Jeff Butler and Vicki Howard (Fernley) for contributing and assisting with this story. “DESCRIBING BRIBIE ISLAND “ with Historical Society President Lynne Hooper

Describing Bribie Island 1865-1965 Barry Clark- Bribie Island Historical Society Over the century from 1865 to 1965 many different people have written fascinating first-hand accounts recording their personal experience of visiting Bribie Island. Each story provides a special insight into both the writer and the events they experienced during their time here and reveals many different aspects of life and times on Bribie over those 100 years. Following extensive research and document selection the Bribie Island Historical Society has published a book containing a number of these unique first-hand accounts. The book is titled “Describing Bribie Island 1865-1965”. Over the last ten years Donna Holmes, Coordinator of the BIHS Historical Database Project has recorded over 10,000 references to photos, documents and articles mentioning Bribie Island. Donna selected 27 historical first-hand accounts in various formats including articles, letters and poems containing descriptive details of what Bribie Island was like when their writer visited. Donna Holmes (right) launches book The earliest stories are two letters written in 1865 on an Easter trip to Bribie by four men in a row boat. What an adventure they had rowing up the Pumicestone Passage! One man was the first premier of Queensland, another was manager of the Bank of NSW in Brisbane. The second letter was originally sent to a niece on the other side of the world and is illustrated with a series of delightful sketches and a wonderful map of Moreton Bay showing the stops along the journey . Another narrative tells of an old man and a boy on a week-long trip from Beaudesert to Bribie Island in a horse and cart in

The authors include famous people like Thomas Welsby though mainly they are ordinary people who came to Bribie Island to do a job, make a new life or escape from an old one. Many of the documents have been sourced from newspapers of the time, through the John Oxley Library or from items donated to the Bribie Island Historical Society by descendants of the writer.

The selected accounts are all so different and provide insightful understanding of the various eras of Bribie’s history. What it was like in the 1890s, during the First World War, the Depression years, the Second World War, the struggles of the 1950s and the boom years after the Bridge. The most recent account is a poem written in 1965 by the Island’s Librarian. This is the first published book by the Bribie Island Historical Society, which will celebrate its tenth anniversary in 2018. The book has over 80 pages of well-referenced material with numerous footnotes and several illustrations from the original stories. Members of the Historical Society have purchased copies, and a few are available to members of the public for $20 plus postage by contacting the Society on bribiehistoricalsociety@gmail.com or in person in the Bateman Room at the Bribie Island Library on most Tuesday or Thursday mornings . Happy New Year to all who call Pumicestone Home. My family, like many locals and visitors to our vibrant community, saw the New Year in along our stunning waterfront at Bongaree. The evening had it all; market stalls, live entertainment and of course the wonderful firework display. Congratulations to all the organisers, volunteers and participants as your efforts were very well received and appreciated by all in attendance. I spoke to many people who, like me, had a wonderful evening with family and friends.

Deputy Liberal National Party Leader and Shadow Treasurer Tim Mander said Labor had sprung four confidence-killing, jobs-destroying taxes on Queenslanders on the eve of the state election. “These taxes are “job killers,” as

“Under Labor Queenslanders are being hit with a terrible trifecta: higher taxes, higher cost of living and higher debt.” Mr Mander said new Treasurer Jackie Trad should use the release of the MidYear Fiscal and Economic Review to rule out any further tax hikes, raids and rip offs. “Queenslanders have a right to know if the Palaszczuk Government is planning to slug them with future tax increases,” he said. “Queenslanders have a right to know if Treasurer Trad is planning to add to Labor’s $15 billion worth of raids, including grabs on superannuation and long service leave. “Queenslanders have a right to know how much is going to be cut from individual departments as part of Labor’s $1 billion “reprioritisation”, as outlined in its election costings, and what these cuts mean for frontline services. “They also have a right to know how Labor plans to pay down debt, given the Palaszczuk Government has consistently broken its fiscal principles. “After just a week in the job Treasurer Trad has already made it clear she’s out of ideas. When Labor’s out of ideas it resorts to form – taxing Queenslanders to pay for their budget mismanagement.”

Missing Wife, Mother and Grandmother in Penang Malaysia since 13th December.

Share this story please!!! Story by Belinda Ferguson

Recent Photo of Renee or Ann Jenkins This story is extremely personal to me, and while Aunty Ranee (as I call her) and her family do not live in our region, I am writing this in the hope that someone in our community may know someone in Malaysia or might be heading there to assist in passing this story onto anyone over there. Getting the word out may help her family, who are extremely worried about her to find their cherished mother. Greg Jenkins and Jen Bowen (Aunty Ranee’s Children) have been looking for her since Wednesday the 13th of December. She is the backbone of

their family. Greg and Jen have been door knocking in Penang and handing out Pamphlets with a photo of their mother since she was missing. They have searched missionaries and covered the whole area desperately looking for her. Aunty Ranee went to Penang Malaysia in December to visit her very ill mother who is 101 years old. She had a dentist appointment on the 13th of December about 3pm at Burma Road in Pulau Tikus, Aunty Ranee phoned her husband Frank Jenkins saying she was being harassed by people asking for her passport. After that, a clinic employee helped her hail a ride to Little Sisters of the Poor – Home for the Aged in Lorong Batu Lanchang, Ayer Itam. It is believed that the driver let her off in front of Ramakrishna Ashrama instead, which is about 3km away from her original destination.

Probus celebrates Christmas

The Probus Club of Bribie Island celebrated its last function for the year when fifty two members, partners and guests attended their 2017 Christmas Luncheon at the Bribie Island RSL last month. Club President David Marquet (pictured left) with Master of Ceremonies, Bill Eberhardt, summarised the successes of the past year as being especially rewarding, when many social clubs are struggling to thrive. Jenda Jacobs and The Voices Choir once again entertained with their enthusiastic rendition of the golden oldies of the festive season and the MC kept things rolling along with a quite difficult Christmas-themed quiz. The social club meets at 9:15 a.m. on the first Tuesday each month in the RSL’s

Review complete on community feedback to proposed scheme amendments Moreton Bay Regional Council has completed its review of community feedback on the first proposed amendments to the region’s planning scheme. Mayor Allan Sutherland said during the public consultation period from August 21 to October 6, council received more than 700 submissions, all of which had now been reviewed and taken into consideration ahead of the amendments’ submission to the state government. Proposed amendments to the planning scheme include the much-anticipated $9.5 billion Caboolture West Local Plan, changes to requirements for sheds and carports, new mapping to identify future road connections and identifying emerging community zones to meet the state government’s housing supply and population requirements under the new

South East Queensland Regional Plan. “Council has considered all submissions received during consultation and fine-tuned the amendments to reflect community feedback,” Mayor Sutherland said. “Council will now formally write to everyone who made a written submission with information on how their feedback has been considered as part of the proposed amendments. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to those who have taken the time to provide feedback. Your submissions will help guide the future planning of a region whose population is expected to reach 600,000 in the next 15-plus years. “It’s important to remember that the planning scheme is a living document that is updated to respond to the everchanging needs of Moreton Bay, and the only way we have been able to do that is with your feedback. Mayor Sutherland said the proposed amendments would now be presented to the state government for review and approval. “Council will now write to the state government to adopt the proposed amendments, which have been updated to reflect community feedback.”

THE TROUBLE WITH DON’TS AND DO’S

So how many times since January 1st have you already heard “New Year, New Me” so far? Done to death really isn’t it, especially by the fitness industry. Well you won’t hear that from me, oh hang on, except that I have just made you read it, Drat! Anyway it’s a New Year - that’s just in case you have been lost in the war torn aisles of Woolies and it escaped your notice! Yes, it’s that time of year when people look at their lives and then many of them decide it is time to change things around so that their lives also change - hopefully for the better. Millions sit down and make lists of resolutions, lists of changes, lists of “Don’ts and Do’s ”. Then they make more lists, this time it is the stuff that they will need so they can accomplish these “Don’ts and Do’s”. They then make even more lists of the time it will take to fit in the “Don’ting and Doing” into their already busy lives and how long it will take to reach the goal that will prove that they did eventually achieve the “Don’ts and Do’s”. They then take a ragged breath because they are exhausted from listing stuff and they look at the pile of lists needed for all those “Don’ts and Do’s”. Suddenly that pile of lists make the whole “Don’ting and

Doing” appear insurmountable! So they leave all those lists sitting in a pile on the table and eventually, a couple of weeks into January, they tidy up and throw all those lists out and surprise, surprise once again they don’t “Don’t or Do” and nothing in their lives changes. Now let me tell you, of course I do this as your local expert “Don’ter and Do’er” person (In fact if I check under the bed I’m pretty sure I could find a certificate that would prove that I can “Don’t and Do” in a very expertish way). Yes let me tell you that if you really want to “Don’t or Do” something the best way to become your own personal expert is to stop writing lists and actually get up and “Don’t or Do” IT! Tip #1 in “Don’ting and Doing” is that it has been scientifically proven that you are far more likely to achieve whatever it is you want to achieve if you make it a positive achievement. You must take an eraser to your “Don’ts” and change them to “Do’s”. For instance, lets say you spend 22.5 hours sitting on your sofa staring at a make believe world inside a small box, but this year you have decided you need to walk 30mins a day so that the thickness of cobwebs surrounding your life and the thickness of your butt both become thinner. You must make sure to think about this change in positive ways. Never think “I DON’T WANT TO sit and gather dust as thick as a polar bears

Senior Gentle Exercises To Start Your Day Before You Start

FINGERS AND WRIST WARM UP

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Bend your arms at the elbows at hold them at waist level. Clench your fists, release and spread your fingers as wide as you comfortably can.

If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to the exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

SHOULDERS WARM UP

Let’s get started!

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. SLOWLY Lower your chin towards your chest and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your chin back up to return to the starting position. Keeping your chin level SLOWLY Turn your head to the right and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your head back to the centre so you return to the starting position. Keeping your chin level SLOWLY Turn your head to the left and hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Bring your head back to the centre Return to the starting position. Repeat each stretch 3 times and rest.

These exercises are a great way to “warm up” your body to start your day. Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. You can do these sitting on your bed or in a stable chair.

Repeat 10 times or as many as you are comfortable doing.

Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Lift and rotate or “roll” your shoulders SLOWLY forward. Then SLOWLY lift and rotate your shoulders back to the starting position Rest and then Repeat 10 times or as many as you feel comfortable doing.

NECK WARMUP

BACK WARM UP #2 Sit comfortably on the edge of your bed or in a stable chair. Sit up tall with your shoulders back and chest up. Interlock your fingers and put them in front of your chest with palms facing in. SLOWLY Stretch your arms forward and upwards to chest height and gently push your hands away until you feel a stretch in your upper back . Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. SLOWLY Return your arms to the starting position. Rest for 10 to 30 seconds and repeat 2 to 4 times Repeat as many times as you both feel comfortable doing up to 10 throws each. Rest

coat anymore”, you must remove the negatives! Change it so you think “I DO WANT to feel better and move more”. Believe you are doing something positive. You are GAINING 30mins walking time, and of course you are also gaining health, fitness, and happiness. Tip #2 in “Doing” to ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE that you succeed in changing your life is to find something you enjoy doing, you must find what you enjoy “Doing” . You must find what FITS YOU and your fitness, lifestyle, and current ability. If you have no idea what you may enjoy “Doing”, then TRY THEM ALL! Try walking, swimming, cycling, fitness classes, water aerobics, dancing, what about cow pat throwing? Try everything and anything until you find what fits you and makes you fitter, healthier, happier and hopefully not smellier Tip #3 – Always make sure the cow pats are DRIED. Please Do spend 2018 finding what fits you and have fun becoming fitter while you are Do’ing it.shows you that even after a week where your whole world is turned upside down you

Queensland welcomes 749 new doctors More than 740 new doctors today began their careers caring for Queenslanders at public hospitals across the state. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk congratulated 94 of Queensland’s new starters at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on beginning their careers, and welcomed them to the Queensland Health family. “Today is a huge milestone for these new doctors as they begin their long and rewarding careers in medicine,” Premier Palaszczuk said. “During the election campaign we promised a renewed focus on health, and we are already delivering just a few weeks into the New Year. Across the state we have 749 new doctors taking up positions at Queensland Health hospitals—an increase from the 738 we welcomed last year.

Acting Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Shannon Fentiman said the latest cohort of medical interns was spread across Queensland.

“While we’re celebrating our newest doctors in the heart of Brisbane today, more than half of them are beginning their rotations in regional hospitals, all of which are excellent training grounds,” Ms Fentiman said.

Caboolture locals waiting too long for emergency treatment

“The people of Caboolture deserve a world-class health system and this Labor Government isn’t working to deliver the services we need,” Ms Wilson said. “The hard-working nurses, doctors and paramedics at Caboolture Hospital need more assistance to improve wait times and targeted resources to provide better health services. “Something is definitely wrong when 40 per cent of Caboolture residents presenting to the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) aren’t being seen in the Department’s own recommended time frames and it’s just not good enough.

Replacing Dentures with Permanent Teeth

“We are committed to bettering the health of Queenslanders, no matter where they live, and each of these new doctors will have an invaluable impact on lives right across the state.”

- Micro nutrients -minerals and vitamins that are in our food, like zinc, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C etc etc. 4. Ensure proper hydration- your body needs 30ml water per kg of body weight per day 5. Ensure proper sleep- an adult requires 7-8 hours of sleep per night 6. Keep active- exercise (preferably outdoors) for a minimum of 30 mins x 3times per week 7. Ensure you have a balanced lifestyle where you have relaxation time out for yourself doing things that you like and make your heart happy.

How to be a healthier happier you in 2018 A new year brings with it new year’s resolutions. My New Year’s resolution for 2018 is to accomplish the resolutions of 2017 which I should have done in 2016 because I made a promise in 2015 and planned in 2014. So how many of us are guilty of making resolutions and not sticking to them? My hand is up. How about instead, have a look at what changes you’d like to make, making sure they’re practical and doable and set smaller, more achievable goals. If we look at the basics of being healthier there are a lot of things we can do. The first doable change and that with the biggest impact is to clean up our diet. 1. Reduce foods that cause inflammationthe pre-curser to disease states. Sugar, alcohol, refined grains- white flour products like cakes, biscuits, pastries,

white bread, white pasta; dairy products (unless of course you are a cow); transfats- fast food, deep fried fatty foods and margarine. 2. Eat more foods that reduce inflammation: Vegetables, water, spices, good fats (omega3), berries, dark chocolate. Chocolate? Awesome! 3. Ensure you eat foods that nourish our bodies. Macronutrients required for basic functioning are: - Protein- 1g protein per kg of body weight. Considering a palm sized piece of chicken for example contains approximately 25-30g, would you be getting enough? Sources are green leafy vegetables, quinoa, tofu, grass fed organic meat, eggs, fish - Carbohydrates- from vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and wholegrains - Fats- (good ones)- avocado, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts and seeds, omega 3, fish

8. Go out and enjoy nature- walk in the park, in the rainforest, along the beach, up a mountain. 9. Practise gratitude and try to live in the present. Try meditation, yoga, and mindfulness. 10. Reduce your exposure to toxins in the form of many cosmetic ingredients, pesticides used in gardening, household cleaning products and pollution. Oh and two more things- step out of your comfort zone; and laugh more! Choose as many or as little and know that every little bit counts and all is contributing to a healthier, happier you. Happy 2018!

The new interns are participating in a week-long orientation program to familiarise themselves with each hospital, its services and clinical practice and procedures before beginning rotations through a variety of units that may include general medicine, surgery, emergency medicine and additional elective terms in other specialised areas.

And so it went on…a long, frustrating search for food actually grown in Australia and processed into edible food matter, without the added ‘ imported ingredients ‘ Well, what are these ‘ imported ingredients ‘ ? Without displaying all the boring details, Cranky Lizard can say that we are talking ‘ non-priority ‘ foods, such as seasonings, bulk paste [ what-ever that is ? ] and a number of other food items, one fact crawls out from under this avalanche of bureaucratic babble ; imported ingredients are cheap, not to say they are bad, just cheap. There is, in fact, a recently developed Commonwealth Government food labelling initiative which is not bad, it displays contents in percentage on each item. You can see for yourself which food is Australian grown and made and which food contains percentages of imported stuff. Cranky Lizard is a country boy, very familiar with the meat industry, beef, pork and sheep meats, and knows that all fresh pork sold in Australia is Australian pork, but, 70% of processed meat in small goods made in Australia is imported – why ?

Large, soft nectarines, exploding with flavour when bitten…juice running down your chin ! Apricots, brilliantly coloured ; soft, luscious, texture with flavours rushing back from childhood days ! Tomatoes to die for…apple cucumbers big enough to grab your mind and solid, chunky sweet corn you can eat from the stalk !! Butcher shops decorated with fresh, fat sausages hanging over trays of enticing, red, local beef enclosed in soft, white coats of animal fat produced in local and regional paddocks – displayed with skill and care. An abundance of wonderfully, healthy, local vegetables and produce crying out for consumption, displayed on tables alongside jars of home- made sauces and jams ; almost cascading off the groaning tables which barely contain them all. Where is this, you say ?? Throughout the regional areas of New South Wales and Queensland, this magnificent food is found daily, in local farmer’s markets, butcher shops and small produce outlets across those regions. Australian food. Grown with skill and care by Australians. Not all of it is symmetrical in shape. Not all of it is scrubbed clean and presented like white billiard balls in air conditioned malls…it is food, real food and it is Australian food. And you can buy it, if you make the effort to find it, in fact, demand it !! Within the circulation boundaries of this newspaper, butcher shops such as the ones mentioned above exist and much of the vegetable and fruit produce is available at local markets and local stores. Cranky Lizard is not writing an advertisement for local butchers and fruit growers, Oh No ! Cranky Lizard is saying that buying goods and services made and produced in Australia is un-ashamedly good for us, good for the local region and, ultimately, good for Australia.

Putting it simply- economics. I am sure you can figure that out. It is as simple as that. These are days when our nation is struggling with its political system…abuse of the preferential system ensures the ‘ one vote one person ‘ principle becomes farcical and it is easy to drift sideways towards being dis-illusioned with the whole thing : and it seems easy to assume there is nothing one person can do to affect any positive outcome.

Cranky Lizard also notes that discussions are continuing about the importation of beef into Australia! For Heaven’s Sake, why ? We can grow enough beef to feed ourselves and we are a major beef exporter, this trade is one of our major economic pillars and, at first glance importing beef seems nonsense. Cranky Lizard intends to get an answer for this

from the Commonwealth Government, so you can watch this space !! In a recent journey out into Western Queensland, which Cranky Lizard does quite often, Clothing made by Goondiwindi Cotton was discovered ; a rare gem crouching in the town of its name and the quality of the cotton shirts, T-Shirts and polo shirts was superb as were the other items of clothing available. This is an example of what is being made here in Queensland and is available if you seek it out. You can check out the website at Goondiwindi Cotton. Cranky Lizard accepts that budgets direct many people’s lives, but you will make many trips to local bulk clothing stores purchasing new cheap stuff before you will wear out one good quality cotton garment. Think about that, please. The power of market demand is awesome, bloody awesome, and if every person who reads this wonderful newspaper, the nineteen thousand plus of you, if each one of you made a point of demanding Australian made, grown and processed products, even just one or two each week, the effect upon local producers and manufacturers is immediate and positive. Cranky Lizard does not believe in fairy tales but Cranky Lizard believes in the power of local demand, watched it happen in other places in this wonderful country and knows it works. Welcome to the Year of the Dog, in the Chinese Zodiac, good fortune awaits and Cranky Lizard wishes you all a very happy Australia Day on 26 January, 2018. Please buy Australian products…you are putting your money into your own pocket.

But there is !! Making a determined effort to purchase goods, food and services that are Australian will have an immediate effect upon local economies specifically, regional economies generally and national economies eventually. Tax bases are increased, employment is increased, and general community activity is increased but, Oh how tricky it can be ?? Cranky Lizard spent some time in a local national brand supermarket, trying to take my own advice. The nectarines were like cricket balls, the plums were black billiard balls…you know the story, you have been there your self ! Cranky Lizard asked the rhetorical question, ‘ where is all the fresh, ripe fruit that is described in the opening paragraphs of this article ??

BUY A BRICK IN SUPPORT OF OUR OVERNIGHT COTTAGE RESPITE BUILDING Bribie Respite & Support Services (formerly Golden Age) is building a home style overnight respite facility to support those who are living with dementia, who are frail & elderly and their Carers in our Bribie Island and Surrounds community.

Well, not in, local supermarkets – but it is available in farmer’s markets and, in a growing number of local fruit and vegetable barns.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Cranky Lizard then spent some time in the can food area, looking for, of all things, peanut paste of the crunchy kind. Plenty of choices and plenty of claims of ‘ Made in Australia ‘ in big letters, but have a closer look and you will read, ‘ Made in Australia, from local and imported ingredients ‘ Now, I ask you, what do we need to import to make peanut paste ?

$30 buys a brick, your name will be placed on a memorial plaque and you will receive a certificate of appreciation in celebration of your contribution. Our community needs an overnight respite facility that is home like, easily accessible and can support the needs of older people, people with advancing memory loss as well as young people with disability, who choose to remain living at home in our community.

We grow peanuts in Queensland, we have plenty of vegetable oil and all the rest of the stuff shoved in it to make it last, so what do we need to import ?? I could not find out so I did not buy that stuff. Eventually I found some peanut butter

Ms Lamb said “We’ve worked extremely hard to put forward compelling cases on behalf of all applicants to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science to ensure that they have the best possible chance of receiving funding for their projects.” “At this point in time, fourteen of the 18 organisations who have applied have succeeded in their applications – this is a fantastic result.” “Out of the $150,000 available to organisations in our area, we’ve managed to get $132,543 allocated to projects that will directly support our community through inclusion, tourism, recreation, education and sustainability.” Ms Lamb added. “The outcome that we’ve managed to achieve for our community really goes to show that it pays off when we all work together and support each other.” The organisations that have benefited from the Stronger Communities

Dodgy Practices in Queensland’s Funeral Industry Shadow Attorney-General David Janetzki said “Last week I wrote to Labor’s Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath to ask her to get to the bottom of allegations of dodgy practices in Queensland’s funeral industry. “We fear that media reports today may be the tip of the iceberg – and at the very least they need to be taken seriously and an investigation needs to begin immediately. “In another case of this lazy Labor Government failing to act, the LNP has seen copies of correspondence sent to the Attorney-General more than 12 months ago and it seems that several issues have been constantly fobbed off by her department. “From what we have seen the claim raised in the media today is not an isolated case. “People deserve nothing less than the dignity and respect of a proper burial and allegations of loved ones being ripped off through the funeral process are appalling. “The alleged funeral industry rorts and rip offs need to stop, and we are calling on Labor to investigate this issue and ensure there aren’t systemic problems in the industry.”

REIQ 2018 AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE FINALISTS The Real Estate Institute of Queensland has announced its 2018 Awards for Excellence finalists, representing the best in the Queensland real estate profession for the year. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said this was a very special event because the winners would be part of the REIQ during its centenary of celebrations. “As we look back on a century of shaping the Queensland real estate market it’s wonderful to draw a link between today’s highly professional real estate practitioners and those ambitious few men who started this organisation in 1918 with the simple goal of raising professionalism in the industry,” she said. “It’s particularly satisfying to be able to say with certainty that we have achieved the goals set out by our founding visionaries,” she said. This year’s Awards included a new category recognising innovation. “Real estate has changed so much in recent years and we can see in our membership the dramatic differences they have made to the way they run their business compared with the way a typical agency used to operate in decades gone by,” Ms Mercorella said. “We needed an award that recognised those agents who are embracing change and harnessing the power of digital technology to streamline their operations.” The Awards this year attracted a record number of entrants, reflecting the growing strength in the market. Winners will be announced at the gala Awards dinner at Brisbane City Hall on 3 March 2018. “Queensland’s real estate market has shown modest growth this year, especially in comparison with the southern states, and as a result our members have had to be more efficient, more skilled and more focused than ever before to achieve commercial and professional success,” she said. “Our judges have been highly impressed with the quality of entrants and we are looking forward to announcing the winners at our gala event,” Ms Mercorella said. Beachfront markets lead growth surge Felicity Moore Southeast Queensland’s world-class beaches are driving median price growth for our coastal housing markets, with Noosa reining supreme with 9.6 per cent annual growth, followed by Gold Coast with 7.3 per cent annual growth and Sunshine Coast LGA with 6.8 per cent annual growth to median house prices. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the growth surge was helped along by a boost in tourism numbers. “Tourism is one of the largest contributors to Queensland’s gross state product (GSP), with almost 8 per cent of GSP coming from tourism. This is roughly $25 billion in the year to June

27 2016, which means when that sector grows it offers employment opportunities and this attracts workers who need somewhere to live,” she said. The strong performance of the southeast corner’s coastal markets has helped drive Queensland’s growth over the past 12 months, with more than 58,000 houses sold and an annual median price growth of 2.4 per cent. Brisbane LGA: Brisbane LGA enjoyed another year of steady sustainable growth, with the annual median house price increasing 3.1 per cent to a new high of $660,000. This market has grown almost 30 per cent over the past five years, demonstrating solid financial returns for property owners. The unit market has continued its softening, with the market contracting 2.6 per cent over the past year. The new annual median house price is $440,750, down from $452,500 a year ago. With more supply expected online over the next 12 months we expect this market will not firm up until mid-2019 at the earliest. Queensland has the highest proportion of first-home buyers, with these new property seekers making up about 20 per cent of the buying population, according to ABS lending data. Moreton Bay: In line with the rest of the southeast corner, Moreton Bay delivered consistent growth in the annual median house price, increasing 2.6 per cent to $430,000. This is the fastest-selling market of all the LGAs in Outer Brisbane (Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and the Redlands), with a median days on market of just 34 days.

Moreton Bay’s unit market fell 4.3 per cent over the year to September 2017, moving from $358,145 to $342,900. This was the largest median unit fall in Greater Brisbane. This is also the tightest rental market in Greater Brisbane (along with Ipswich), with a vacancy rate of 1.9 per cent. Rents have risen for threebedroom houses and three-bedroom townhouses over the quarter. Redland: This market has delivered solid growth for the year to September 2017, with 3.2 per cent growth taking the median house price to $516,000. It’s the most expensive market in Outer Brisbane (Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, and Redland) and the market that has delivered the strongest growth over the past five years, with the annual median house price growing 17.8 per cent. The unit market has performed very well, growing 4.1 per cent over the past year, to a new median of $406,000. Over the past five years this market has grown 21 per cent, which is outstanding, especially when compared with Ipswich (16.5 per cent), Logan (-13.5 per cent) and Moreton Bay (3.3 per cent).

After flying into the capital LIMA, you will notice that like any major city, high rises monopolize the skyline. The colonial centre is still visible and provides a quick glimpse into the past. But when we think of Peru of course we think of Machu Picchu and for some the Nazca Lines - famous for the geometric drawings in the desert. Discovered by a Peruvian archaeologist in 1926, the lines and bird shapes are virtually impossible to identify from ground level. They were only first brought to light with the advent of flight in the 1930’s. Cusco Plaza de Armas

Deputy State Opposition Opposition Leader Leader Deb Tim Mander Says Frecklington Speed Cameras... ...should be about saving lives and road safety – not revenue raising. In 2015, the Palaszczuk Labor Government removed the requirement for mobile speed cameras to display a “speed camera in use” sign. The Palaszczuk Labor Government are planning a windfall 46 per cent increase in speed camera fines with revenue raised by speed cameras to reach $194 million by 2020/2021. Labor are treating Queenslanders like cash cows and should abolish covert speed cameras. To change behaviours on our roads we must educate drivers and make sure they are aware of the road rules. Making drivers feel like they have been trapped by a speed camera does nothing to achieve road safety outcomes. The State Opposition will sign all speed cameras, we will get rid of covert cameras and Labor’s revenue raising.

“Our confidence in the child safety system has been rocked yet again – today a corruption scandal. “Sadly this is just the latest in a string of serious failures at this department under Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and her lazy Ministers. “We’ve had tragic child deaths, we’ve had cover ups and we’ve got a secret backlog of suspected abuse cases waiting action. “These systemic failures are putting our most vulnerable at risk. “Sadly, new Child Safety Minister Di Farmer has chosen to keep Queenslanders in the dark about these revelations. This is the exact same approach former Child Safety Minister Shannon Fentiman took. “We need real leadership to change the culture at this department, but sadly we’ve still got a lazy government refusing to face up to these problems.”

QR code (abbreviated from Quick Response Code) is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode (or twodimensional barcode) first designed for the automotive industry in Japan. A barcode is a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached. A QR code uses four standardized encoding modes (numeric, alphanumeric, byte/ binary, and kanji) to efficiently store data; extensions may also be used. The QR code system became popular outside the automotive industry due to its fast readability and greater storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. A QR code consists of black squares arranged in a square grid on a white background, which can be read by an imaging device such as a smart phone camera. Try it out now, download a QR code reader from Google or Apple store and see how quick it is. The film follows family of superheros who are forced to hide their powers from the world and live in a quiet suburban life. Mr Incredibles desire to help people in need draws the entire family in a battle with Syndrome, a former fan of Mr Incredibles who plots to wipe out all superheros with his killer robot. At the end of the movie a random villain declares war on the city the superheros live in, the 5 members of the family put on their masks and get ready to fight. No-one knows what happened after this, and 13 years later people are itching to find out when the movie comes out. I understand that Disney and Pixar both have had a lot of other projects but to wait 12 years before making the sequel of a film. Children all over the world have wanted a sequel for several years. Next winter this movie will come out and kids will beg parents to go see it, while Pixar and Disney have waited far too long, they were smart to wait a couple of years. The first Incredibles movie made over $633 million, after the release of this film will

most likely earn both companies more money. This was very intelligent of both companies to do this. They can both pay for upcoming projects, as thousands and probably millions of dollars go into making these animated films. Animation has always been a fascination in this world, kids get mesmerised by the moving cartoon characters and others get an attraction to animation, animation has changed and revolutionized children’s films. Animation has evolved so much over time and some of the things that have been made are amazing. It can create messages, can provoke emotions like happiness or sadness and can teach children many things. The live action ‘Beauty and the Beast’ came out earlier in 2017 and is a mixture of both animation and real live acting. That movie made people wonder about how much time goes into animation, and how much the resources cost. Animation can challenge people’s attitudes, values and beliefs and it will for many more years. The Incredibles 2 will be released on June 15th of next year.

White is Right!

By Sydney Fry

One in four women are victims of domestic abuse. Domestic violence is the main cause of homelessness for women and their children. These reported rates rise this time of year, with increased alcohol abuse and financial stresses, according to Rape and Domestic Violence Services Australia. Across the country, support networks are currently preparing for a rise in domestic violence cases. During December, 54 percent of calls to police relate to domestic violence, that is a 16 percent increase from a usual 38 percent during the year. The Christmas season invokes added stress and pressure to pay for holidays, presents, food and alcohol. This extra increase in consumption of alcohol mixed with the added demands at this time of year, greatly contributes to the rise in domestic violence and abuse. This then turns into a continuous cycle of abuse.

The White Ribbon Campaign, among many other charities and organisations, seeks to provide a safe place for women and children, to rebuild their lives. These organisations also endeavour to provide food, clothing, medical attention and other support to victims. This time of year, charities such as these seek to support the child victims by supplying toys and gifts to make their Christmas as magical as it should be. Beachmere Dance Teacher Passing on her Moves Leisa Stock, has been teaching jazz and hip hop dance classes in Beachmere for the past four years, and at St Michael’s College for over ten years. More recently her daughter Lana has also started teaching, ensuring that hip hop flavour remains current and on trend. Leisa has always believed that dance class is not just about learning a routine – its about so much more. “It’s about setting goals and achieving them, gaining confidence and making new friends,” Leisa said. “It’s about maximising learning capabilities and about being involved in a physical activity that improves strength,

co-ordination and flexibility,” Leisa said. “And now with Lana more involved in teaching after school classes it’s a great way of showing students what can be achieved. They can expect some energetic, up to date routines with the back up of experience and enthusiasm. It’s going to be a great year.” “Students are also able to join in the D4K performance teams which showcase at various community events in the area throughout the year.” After school classes in jazz / hip hop for students 4 years and over are held at two locations - St. Michael’s college PAC on Friday afternoons and on the beachfront at the Beachmere Activity Centre on Wednesday afternoons. On average at least one woman a week is killed by a partner or former partner in Australia. Women are five times more likely than men to require medical attention or hospitalisation as a result of intimate partner violence. Women are five times more likely to report fearing for their lives. There is never a justification for any form of abuse to occur. But women are not the only victims of abuse, both men and children are experiencing violence from their families. 830,000 men fall victim to domestic violence a year, while two in three children are victims of physical abuse alone.

Gardening & Lifestyle

MICK’S PATCH with Mick O’Brien Dip Hort (MAIH)

Welcome to our latest gardening articles written by a passionate local horticulturist for our equally passionate local gardening community living on Bribie Island and Surrounds. It’s been great to have the rain and summer storms hanging around once again and all our lawns, gardens, including the weeds are flourishing as a result. With the extra humidity about also, the prevalence of pest and diseases have also become rampant in a lot of gardens around the Bribie districts as of late with thriving infestations of leaf hoppers, citrus leaf miner, scale, ants and lawn grub, to mention a few. And I have been busy assisting some of my clients who had returned from their holidays and noticed that their fruit trees were under attack, as the new flush of foliage is soft and succulent and had become too irresistible indeed. The other thing I should mention is that nutritional disorders are prevalent also at this time of year. Especially after some good rainfall which tends to flush those vital soluble nutrients down through the sandy soil profile. This can be remedied by incorporating a slow release fertiliser or some composted manure as a top dressing around the plants under the mulch, which also feeds the soil which in turn feeds your plants over time too. If you want to make your own life-giving microbe brews for your plants, then perhaps you might be interested in a worm farm as the by products of the nutrient dense worm castings and worm juices are miracle tonics that can help to create healthy vibrant plants and are a perfect remedy for sick, tired and stressed plants too. When used in conjunction with compost or with composted manures, not only will your soil retain more moisture in time, the overall vitality and fertility will be improved also. Not to mention of the sustainability factor, from composting the kitchen waste which is a win, win situation indeed! The leaf miner Phyllocnistis citrella, can be a little hard to treat (never mind pronounce) when the damage has already been done, eggs laid, hatched and the new fresh flush of foliage has become disfigured, (which deforms when the pupae invades the leaf blade and mines its way through the skin of the leaf then curls the leaf over for protection). The damaged leaf appears to have a silvery trail simular looking to a snail trail, then it might be best to cut as much of the damaged foliage off as possible and dispose in the bin. Preventative sprays of oils or soaps will deter new moths from laying some eggs which are laid on the midrib of the leaf blade at night time only. Therefore, it will be an ongoing concern and frequent applications of these soaps and oils will be necessary to regain some control. There are leaf miner pheromone traps (one called eco CLM) now available and well worth a try, these large yellow cards have a powerful pheromone tablet which attract the male moth, the pheromones mimic the female scent and subsequently the pest populations are greatly reduced as a result, which is great news, as these pests left un checked can quickly destroy the whole new flush of the new seasons growth of citrus in a blink of an eye. So, here’s hoping you are all enjoying this beautiful summer weather and living the dream on our Beautiful Bribie island and surrounding districts, until next issue, Stay hydrated! LANDSCAPING PLANT OF THE MONTH Buckinghamia celsissima or the Ivory Curl tree

Happy Australia Day! islandandsurrounds.com.au 2018 - Issue 20

Look out, Look out, diseases all about! By Mick O’Brien

Wow, with this heat, who really wants to work outdoors anyhow? Well, lots of us must, but after the Christmas break and returning to work on the second of January, the intense humidity near finished me off on my first day back for 2018. Phew! Speaking of humidity, these are perfect conditions for fungal diseases and there is one that has been the talk of the town during the last 8 years and its name: Myrtle Rust, which is now considered established in South-East Queensland. Previously, it was a quarantine issue and one had to report any outbreak to DPI and QDAF for monitoring and mapping purposes when the fungus was identified. Originally, this disease was introduced to Australia and first recorded in the Central Coast region of NSW in 2010. Now its spread to Tasmania, New Zealand, the whole East Coast of Australia from Victoria to North Queensland and to Darwin and an Island off Darwin called Melville. Myrtle Rust spores are spread by the wind and contact from birds, animals and mankind.

Just had to include this beauty, the ever so handsome, Ivory Curl tree. Buckinghamia celsissima, is putting on a magnificent display now and is literally covered from top to bottom with eye popping, pendulous sprays of creamy white blooms. The display this year is so vivid that these trees are traffic stoppers. The masses of long racemes that grow over 200 mm long almost block the view of any foliage entirely. They seem as though they are suspended like fireworks in the sky, bursting in all directions, is the way I would describe this year’s floral display! The Ivory Curl tree is an Australian native tree and can grow anywhere from 6 to 10 metres tall and 4 metres wide in cultivation, depending on local conditions and they are used extensively as a street trees in South East Queensland due to their hardiness once established. The Ivory Curl tree is a rainforest specimen and in their normal ideal growing environment they can reach over 20 metres tall as they head for the light. The leaves are long and elliptical and grow to about 150mm, shiny green on top and velvety underneath. The juvenile foliage however is lobed and has an attractive bronze colour, the flowers are bee magnets and are fragrant with nectar. Can grow in part shade to full sun. A good old faithful tree for the birds and the bees! By Mick O’Brien

“Well then, after this rusty experience, I am off for a well earnt swim. Until next issue: “See you in the garden”.

So, what is Myrtle Rust and which plants does it attack? Myrtle Rust- Puccinia psidii, formerly Uredo rangelii - is a serious fungal disease that typically attacks the Australian native Myrtaceae family, although each individual species of plant seems to have different levels of tolerance and susceptibility. They include: Eucalyptus sp- (Gum tree), Acmena, Syzygium, and Waterhousea sp- (Lilly Pilly), Callistemon sp- (Bottle Brush), Backhousia sp(Myrtles- Lemon Scented Myrtle), Melaleuca sp- (Paper Bark), to name a few. In the landscape, I have personally found Myrtle Rust on (lemon scented Myrtle) and Syzygium jambos (Lilly Pilly or Rose Apple) and Elaeocarpus eumundii (Quandong), in the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas. What can you do to minimise the spread? Well knowledge is power, so you could search for more resistant species and cultivars when buying plants for the home garden by researching online from reputable suppliers. Some of the new cultivars of callistemon are more tolerant than the original genus and only mildly affected. Here is an interesting link below from Ozbreed plants: http:// www.ozbreed.com.au/research-papers/myrtle-rustresistance-tests.html If you have identified Myrtle Rust in the home garden and it’s in the early onset stage, you could remove if possible, the affected foliage and dispose of in a sealed plastic bag (to minimise contamination) for disposal, then spray the tree with a registered fungicide, in this case Triforine, currently has a APVMA permit to use. If the rust has matured and formed the yellow pustules that are easily spread by wind or by direct contact from animals or humans, then this can be difficult, and caution needed because the pressure emitted from the nozzle of the spraying apparatus can also cause the fungus spores to spread too. While Triforine is considered a preventative and curative treatment for Myrtle Rust, you can also use Copper based sprays and Mancozeb, as a preventative also. Triforine is used to treat black spot on roses and is very effective, as it is absorbed quickly into the plant tissue and can be reapplied 7 days later, or until control is achieved.

2018 - Issue 20 islandandsurrounds.com.au Happy Australia Day!

Today’s workplaces are so unpleasant!! By Staff Writer : Harvey Fewings.

In fact, toxic might be a better word to describe the modern corporate world. Many of them, not all of them, mind you , are cess pits of anger, over inflated tiny egos, control freaks, fear managers, vindictive and vituperative colleagues and managers, over promoted supervisors and team leaders in name only. And, standing there, in bright day-glow

hold.

the actions of all others revolve.

• Many people bring their personal inadequacies to the work place, where, because of the position they hold they are able to dominate others, be cruel to others or in some other malicious way dump their personal failings on their work colleagues.

Axiomatic to successful leadership is the respect of those whom you lead. Whether this leadership occurs in the workplace, a factory, a hotel, a surgery, a retail shop or even a battlefield. Without the respect of those whom you lead, you will fail as a leader.

• People who, for whatever reason, feel they have failed in their personal lives/ relationships, exact some form of bizarre revenge on their work colleagues.

Irrefutably; you will fail.

There is also another deadly dynamic at work in todays’ workplaces and that is the disparity of age ; older, more mature workers understand the value of work and the dignity of completing tasks well, they have lived with adversity, learnt to value the experience of others and, more than likely, are prepared to seek the opinion of others. Older workers, however, have become less valued, except in some special places, and their

Australians do not give respect because you demand it from them…they give it you because they want to, which means you have earned their respect. Respect is theirs to give and theirs to take away. I have seen, over many years in the military and working for myself, men and women in the workplace, who demand the respect of others, who manage by fear – meaning ‘ I shall sack you if you don’t do what I tell you !! ‘, and, in each case, without exception, they fail as a leader. They just fail. And, usually the business they own or manage fails with them. I say, good. It should be so, the workplace has had enough of the duds. What has worked for me, without fail, over many experiences, is honesty of purpose, a clear expression of what you hope to achieve, [ ‘ like, why are we here ? ] and an abiding respect for the skills and abilities of the people with whom you are going to be in touch with every day. Your workmates !!

pink, is an elephant in the corner of the room, that none of the inadequate individuals named above see or acknowledge its presence. The name of the elephant is called respect. You are urged to keep that word in mind. From the experience of the writer, which it must be declared, is hopelessly inadequate when it comes to Government Departments, Local, State or Federal, or even large corporate, multinational conglomerates ; this writer has never been employed by any of them ; never wanted to and grateful for that. The writer has been largely selfemployed for many decades, but has had to deal with corporate monoliths, and all the various combinations of the modern workplace in between, from multi nationals to the local paint shop. Listening to people talk of their workplace experiences is a solid way of gathering information about what seems to be happening in the modern workplace, large or small… and, depressing as it is most of the conversations centre around how difficult it is all becoming. I am aware of people who dread the thought of having to go to their workplace ; they actually suffer physical/ medical reactions to the thought of being exposed, on a daily basis, to the personal malevolence, the anger, the mean spirited small minded crap that is part of their daily work life. It should not be so, it was never meant to be so ; so, why is it so ?? I am not a work place psychologist, not trained anyway, but I am an astute observer of the human condition and it is as obvious as a dunny in the desert that : • Much of the poison in today’s workplaces is introduced by people who feel/are inadequate for the position they

33

Easy Reading :)

experience, their knowledge and method of working is disparaged. It is easy enough to state the problem ; it another matter entirely to question why is this so, and, what can be done about it ?? Whole Government institutions have been established to deal with this modern corporate phenomena – Fair Work Commission, Human Rights Commission and so on…but all they seem to have done so far is to seek to ameliorate the problem and punish the perpetrators, and maybe that is all that can be done at that level, because, in my view, the problem begins at a much more deeply personal level; a level which cannot be reached by Government departments. Australians work because they wish to be a part of a productive community, they wish to gain the immense personal satisfaction of using their skills and talents to achieve goals, they wish to gain, by the experience of others in the workplace, knowledge and understanding of how things happen, why they happen and what effects these happenings have on their own lives and the lives of others. Work or employment, expressed in simple terms, is a means of providing Australians with the dignity of purpose, the means of providing for themselves and their families and the opportunity of contributing to the functioning of their community or society by the means available to them. So, fundamentally, what we have are groups of people seeking common goals ; and those goals may be expressed in thousands of ways within the bounds of our community. In almost every aspect of human endeavour, there will be, must be, a leader, who will light the fires of ambition, guide the actions of others, provide advice gained from experience and be the centre- point around which,

No one person can walk in the shoes of another. You will never know just what is happening in their deeply personal lives, what they fear, how they react to those fears, what demons drive them – you cannot know. But, what every leader should and must know, is the signs of these troubles, how to recognize them and how to deal them. As a leader in the workplace you are

charged with the responsibility of the complete safety of your people, you are charged with the responsibility of encouraging them to give their best to the tasks at hand, you are charged with the responsibility of giving your people the confidence to talk to you, to seek your advice and to feel free to have open and honest discussions about matters affecting the common workplace and how to deal with them. Leaders cannot hide. You cannot hide behind your rank, your biology, your knowledge, or the lack of it ; you cannot hide behind the fact that you may have been elected by members of an organization, you cannot hide behind anything. Nothing. If, as a leader, you use fear, threats, personal connections or any other perceived moral or physical advantage in the workplace, to gain superiority over your workmates, you are a failure as a leader. A leader must have the moral courage to confront the bullies in the workplace, to provide them with help if needed and, in the end, if they neither accept nor want help, then move them on. If you can’t do that – you are not a leader and should not fool yourself and your employer because you will not fool your workmates. The mob will quickly work you out and withdraw their respect. And you won’t get it back. Unequivocally, success as a leader in todays’ corporate workplace, or any work place for that matter, will depend entirely on your ability to gain and keep the respect of your workmates. Simple. If you can’t do that – get out and work for yourself, see how long you last.

Tassie Here We Come! Matt Hanrahan, local Beachmere resident and President of Beachmere RSL Sub Branch, will be just one of 20 men and women who will battle the elements, and their personal comfort zones, when they paddle the east coast of Tasmania this February. The Battle the Coast Kayak Adventure Challenge is just one of the Rehabilitation adventures organised by Mates 4 Mates, an RSL Queensland sponsored Ex Serviceman Organisation which supports wounded, injured or ill Australian Defence Force personnel. It works toward goal setting, breaking down social isolation and encourages social interaction to help veterans in life after service.

Kayaking Brave the Crossing

Mates 4 Mates is recognised nationally for providing the most progressive, integrated support programs in the country which help rebuild and save lives. Some support programs assist with employment, education, counselling, rehabilitation or therapy but others challenge the veterans to cope with situations requiring the resilience, mental and physical strength, leadership and mateship resources they once used in their service careers.

Storm training pre challenge

Recipes of the World 7 INGREDIENTS 200g packet tennis or marie biscuits, crushed 80g butter, melted 385g tin condensed milk 750ml milk 100ml cornflour 80ml water 5ml vanilla essence 2 eggs Pinch salt Ground cinnamon, for dusting

Some have walked the Kokoda Track, others have participated in the Aussie 10 Peaks Trek and others have attended the five day intensive Equine Therapy program working closely with horses. All of these challenges achieve different

results, but all have helped to achieve the individual goals of those participating whilst helping to provide enduring physical and psychological support to the military family. The Kayak Adventure Challenge will start on the east coast of Tasmania and will finish some 21 days and 330 kms later in Musselroe Bay. With a land crew of just two, the kayakers will battle isolation, fatigue and the elements with just team mates, teamwork, a compass and the desire to make it to their next destination. Months of training and activity just getting ready for the Challenge commenced in October and Matt knows how hard it can be after an “exhausting” training week in Moreton Bay.

“We are all looking forward to it in some way. Getting out of our comfort zone and working together to achieve results – that is what we were good at in our jobs and now we can regain that sense of purpose. We will make friends, build bonds and encourage peer support. Once we start there is no going back.” Matt said.

South African 15 Minute Milk Tart METHOD Blitz the biscuits until fine. Mix in the butter and press into a 27cm fluted tart dish. Chill in the fridge. Combine condensed milk and milk, and microwave for 3 minutes. Combine the cornflour, water, vanilla, eggs and salt. Stir this mixture into the condensed milk mixture until smooth. 2018 - Issue 20 islandandsurrounds.com.au Happy Australia Day!

By : Staff Writer Harvey Fewings.

Every Australia Day, 26 th January, they held a damper competition down the side of Tuggles Park by the river. It was close to the Pub and the billabong behind the Pub. That was a good place to hold something like this, because you could pop off to the Pub for some refreshments during the hard yakka that had to be done to make a decent damper ; the kids could also play around in the park and have pub raspberries if they whinged enough and Councillor Wrenchpit’s mad sister, Marigold Wrenchpit who was in charge of these events, could park her ‘ puddle jumper ‘ Land Rover down the side of the park by the toilet which enabled her to bring all the stuff needed for a damper competition to the Park without too much fuss. The Council also trucked in a fair amount of dirt which was spread out by a Bobcat – this was place where they could safely light the fires to cook the dampers. Actually, there was always a bit of a fuss with Marigold, because she kept on singing the aria from ‘Bizet’s Opera : Carmen ‘ , we know that – and we know that all the town dogs went up when she drove past singing – so we know that she was noisy unit, but we also know that she a fair demon at running committees and damper competitions needed committees, believe me, it bloody needed a committee !! Damper competitions were about egos and there was fierce competition, as you would expect. The Council provided the ingredients to make dampers and all teams had to be registered 7 days before the competition – on Australia Day. The event attracted teams from the local stations, the town mob, sporting clubs, pubs, the local firies and a bikie mob from Cobar down in New South Wales, who always turned up for Australia Day. There was only one rule in the competition, no team could use any ingredient other than those which had been supplied by the Council, and Marigold Wrenchpit’s ‘ Damper Police ‘ were sticklers for enforcing this rule, as teams had thrown in the odd bit of yeast over the years, trying to get bigger dampers, all they really got was a large ball of inedible dough and disqualified for life from the Damper Competition. Tough but fair ! And – No Appeal !! This year there were eight teams, the local high school was the favourite, because they had been having damper classes in the last term, but there was some competition from the Wheat Foxes, the local girl band, their lead singer, Melanie, was quoted as saying “ We can knock up a hell of a bloody damper ! “ The event kicked off at 1100 hours, fires were lit and were burning down to make the right coals, the flour, salt and water plus a pinch of baking powder were mixed in enamel bowls. All the High School Team had flour up to their elbows and were licking the dough off their fingers when a black Labrador

THE GREAT AUSTRALIA DAY DAMPER COMPETITION

pup knocked over the Lions Club flour bowl and ran around barking white puffs ; the white flour on its face made it look like a racoon. The judge for the day was a bloke who came out to the town every now and then; he was picked because he had no real links to the town so he could be fair…he was supposed to have spoken to a bunyip along the river a few months ago, so he copped a bit over that and he had blue boots, which did not have much to do with anything really. He also had an Aboriginal bloke for a mate – and it was reckoned that this fellah was the real judge anyway. The Council Band was playing ‘ damper ‘ music. Aussie flags were flying all over the place. Kids were running about all over, dogs were barking and a murder of crows squarked noisily from the big river gum on the bank of the billabong. It was all pretty good really, although it was a bit hot, but it was January so it was expected to be hot anyway. The trick to making a proper damper was to make sure the dough was thick and spongy and there was plenty of flour on the outside of the blob, before it went into the ashes. The local Lions Club were out of it because the Labrador pup had wrecked all their flour, no replacements were offered ; the Cobar Bikies had tipped some beer from a green can into their dough and had got sprung by Marigold, disqualified, but they decided to carry on anyway. One of the town teams had an internal blue about their dough and two of their ladies had walked out on the team, so they were struggling and the Wheat Foxes had blitzed the dough making job, got their fire right and were attracting a few side bets about taking the day from the High School. One of the Pub teams finished up in a flour fight with the other Pub team and had lost all interest in cooking what they had left !! It was now clear that there really only three teams in it…the High School, the Backyard Mob from the local footy team and the Wheat Foxes. All had their

dampers in the coals and were watching over their creations like mothers with new born babies. All the spectators, which was the rest of the town, about twenty caravan people and the local firies, who had pulled out at the last minute, just in case they were called out, were milling around in the park, some were folk dancing to the damper music but it was a bit hot for too much of that and the three legged race had turned to be a dud because everyone fell over so the only thing left to do was to watch the Damper Teams as they lifted their dampers from the coals and placed them on the long table by the bandstand. The High School Damper was large, round and had risen a fair bit. They had brushed the coals of it and it looked pretty good. The Wheat Foxes had an oval damper, it was flat and looked a bit like a burnt cow pat! But, the big surprise was the Backyard Mob who had produced a ripper of a damper. Big, round, swollen and only a bit burnt when all the coals were brushed away. The quality of dampers are judged by two main characteristics – sound and taste. A finger flicked against the cooked damper should produce a clear, hollow sound ; if you got a dull thud…your damper was probably not cooked. The judges, because there really were two of them, Blue Boots and his Aboriginal mate, flicked all the dampers, the Wheat Foxes came up with a dull thud but the other two sounded just like proper dampers so they now faced the taste test. Most proper dampers are broken open over your knee and then torn up into smaller pieces. A hush had fallen over the mob as they waited for the judges to chew some pieces of each damper. The High School Team looked at the ground and kicked the dirt around, the Backyard Mob were throwing “ high fives “ at each other whilst the judges looked at each other in amazement. Never had they tasted such bloody good dampers – there was no difference between the two dampers and so they announced, for the first time in the history of the Council Damper Competition, that it was draw. Two winners !! History had been made. Melanie from the Wheat Foxes said that if there were two winners that means that they had come second, which was OK with them. Nobody wanted argue with that. Somebody made a speech. The Band played “ Advance Australia Fair “. The Firies put the damper fires out. Two children and the Labrador/racoon pup jumped into the river and everyone said they would be back next year. And that was good, because that was the right thing to do on Australia Day.

The Spirit of Australia Day By Amelia Strazdins

Australia, a multi-cultural country, home to many different religions, cultures and people, and it is these differences that make celebrating the country we live in such a momentous day. Throughout Australia’s history, this country has been known for its mix of races. In earlier years many immigrants left their own home countries to move to Australia for a fresh start and this is where Australia’s diversity started to occur. In many cities across Australia, the influence of other cultures is imminent, from restaurants to traditions. It is the 26th of January that brings together all Australians to celebrate the country millions call home. Although everyone celebrates Australia Day, people often have their own spin on how they celebrate their love for their home. Some chuck sausages on the barbeque and spend their day relaxing around the pool, other choose to wear a pair of sunnies and eat copious amounts of lamingtons. Many choose to head down to the beach, bodies covered in temporary tattoos of the Australian flag, pitch up an umbrella and slather themselves in sunscreen. However, no matter how a family celebrates Australia Day, it can always be assured that the shop shelves will be empty, with meat pies, Iced VoVo’s, vegemite and pavlova all becoming out of stock fair quickly. It is the combination of the quirky celebrations and food that makes the 26th a truly Aussie day. Towards the end of January is when Australia reminds the world about our culture and way of life, so we may not have an official national food and our traditional clothing items may consist of a tacky cork hat and a pair of swimmers, but it is this day where we show the mateship and humour that Australia is so well renowned for across the world. Australian’s pride is clear for their country and Australia Day 2018 is one to be celebrated with triumph, as the past year has allowed Australia to take a huge step forward with important laws and actions such as gay marriage being legalised. These actions further showing that Australia is a country of diversity and equality. From the fireworks to the cricket games, Australia culture shines through on the 26th of January and Aussies do not shy away from celebrating their beautiful country. As famous Australian song writer Peter Allan once said, “And no matter how long or how far I roam, I’ll still call Australia home.” This saying ringing true when millions of Aussies, whether in Australia or not on the 26th of January raise their glasses to commemorate the country they are lucky enough to call home.

Off to England in 2019 The 2017/18 Ashes series was played in a great spirit of sportsmanship and friendship but rest assured that the next Ashes series to be played in England, which is only 18 months away, will be a tough battle for Australia. The English and Australian commentators are already documenting their predictions, however if you read between the lines, there is a long way to go before the Aussies hit the English soil and as England knows too well, it is tougher to be ‘on tour’ rather then being tucked up in your own bed bowling on an English wicket. The only thing that matters is that the punter gets value for money in entertainment and results. https://www.cricket.com.au/

T20 Big Bash The organisers and event managers of the 17/18 KFC Big Bash and Rebel Women’s Big Bash Series have done an outstanding job to win over the punters both from a television and live audience perspective and Channel 10 have enjoyed ratings success. It must be said, having attended a few live BBL Matches at the Brisbane Gabba, the live BBL version is simply electric and has won the hearts of all ages with music, paper clappers, 6 and 4 signs, fire-works, audience prizes and live commentary. As we know, most avid sports punters and new entrants to the BBL Cricket stage demand a fast, electric and entertaining game that pushes the boundaries and connects the punter with the players and commentators. We wait in anticipation as Cricket Australia prepares to re-negotiate a new lucrative BBL Television sponsorship deal which looks like being more than 2-3 times greater than the current Channel 10 contract. by Daniela Intili, It has been a miserable few years for rugby union in Australia, with lacklustre performances on the park, low crowd numbers and the axing of the Western Force in Super Rugby. But a new deal struck between Rugby Australia (RA) and the Rugby Union Players’ Association (RUPA) is promising sweeping changes and gender equality. “This agreement allows all parties to draw a line in the sand and move forward towards a more prosperous future for Australian rugby,” RUPA president Dean Mumm said. The new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) will see the Super Rugby salary cap increase to $5.5 million, an increase in squad sizes for the four Australian franchises — the Waratahs, Reds, Brumbies and Rebels — and an overall pay increase of around 10 per cent. Super Rugby players will also benefit from extra annual leave. The new deal is effective immediately and will run through to the end of 2020.”It has been a tough but fair negotiation which has provided an outcome that ultimately sets our game on a strong footing heading into the final three years of our current broadcast agreement,” outgoing RA chief executive Bill Pulver said.

SOCCER GOALS STOLEN

Thieves scored when they took the fullsize soccer goals from the Bribie Island Soccer Club grounds in First Avenue.

If anyone in the community has any information we are urging you to go to the Police.

At the end of the 2017 season, the club stored the goals at the back of our change rooms to undertake field maintenance and someone has just come in and taken them.

Chris said, It’s a disappointing start to 2018 as we needs the goals to start the season in March. This will set the club back financially.

We know this is deliberate because it takes two people to move each goal, Chris Knight, Vice President said.

Right now our Treasurer is working out how to raise the $3,000 needed to replace them. Unfortunately there aren’t many grants available at this time of

year. The club is hoping the Bribie community and our supporters will get behind us and donate the much needed funds.

The club has opened a fundraising account through the Australian Sports Foundation. All donations are tax deductible. Happy Australia Day! islandandsurrounds.com.au 2018 - Issue 20

COMMUNITY REPORT-BACK A Message From Susan Welcome to 2018 - I hope you all enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break, and managed to fit in some quality time with your friends and family. Well, it's back to school and uni time, and with it comes the essential task of buying new uniforms, text books and school supplies. I've been there, and I know it can be a financial strain for many families. Don't be afraid to reach out to our great local community organisations for support your Electorate Office can help put you in touch. All the best for 2018, and let's get ready for a healthy, productive and happy New Year.

Community Highlights Mobile black spots continue to impact Bribie and surrounds

the Bribie Congratulations to received wellIsland Tigers who through the deserved funding ities Stronger Commun Programme.

Mobile black spots are right across the electorate. With the state of the NBN roll out, if you can't rely on your mobile, you're left in a pretty vulnerable situation. A year ago I spoke to Beachmere residents about the Government's promise to fund and get on with upgrading towers. A year on, we're still having the same conversation. We'll continue to demand answers and action from the Turnbull Government, and won't stop until people can feel safe in their own homes. If you're affected by mobile black spots, please contact my office and share your experience.

Applications still open: Armistice Day Grants Do you know of an organisation that needs help funding a project to commemorate 100th Anniversary of the Armistice on Remembrance Day next year? My office is now accepting Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the Armistice Centenary Grants Program. Get in touch with my office for further information and an EOI form. Congratulations again to the recipients of Stronger Communities funding. Visit the Community Grants section of my website at www.susanlambmp.com.au for more grant opportunities.

Open Offices and Mobile Offices Making it in to the office during the week can be difficult. That’s why my office takes regular appointments outside of business hours to assist you with resolving individual issues. Contact my office to express your interest for the next event. When we've confirmed the arrangements, we'll get in touch with you about the details. www.susanlambmp.com.au susan.lamb.mp@aph.gov.au (07) 5432 3177 Level 1, 69 King Street Caboolture QLD 4510
