Dear Editor, I write in response to a letter in issue 16 of the “Island and Surrounds” that did not have an author’s name. The article raised concerns about dog off-leash facilities and the petition by residents to have a beach in Bongaree opened to dogs during certain times. I would like to provide an update on the petition and the investigation in to dog off-leash areas.

Council did investigate the suggested location and the aim of residents to provide safer access to beaches for those who may have difficulty navigating existing dog off-leash beach areas such as Red Beach or Woorim.

The investigation found that the two ideal locations for such access would be Bellara, from Boronia Drive north up to Marina Boulevard, which is currently a dog on-leash beach, and towards the Northern end of the foreshore at Banksia along Solander Esplanade.

Given that the Pumicestone Passage, of which these two areas adjoin, is a protected and sensitive ecosystem, feedback was sought from the Department of National Park, Sport and Racing. The response from this Department highlighted some environmental concerns around dog off-leash areas in the Moreton Bay Marine Park area. The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service are currently investigating proposals of this sought and, whilst they cannot support dog off-leash areas in any area within the Moreton Bay Marine Park area at this time, they are open to discussions and consultation once they have formalised their position. Once this is complete council will be in a position to consult with the community in relation to their feedback on the dog off-leash facilities and their ultimate location.

I have since met with the State MP to discuss this and I am happy to continue to take feedback from the community on this issue.

Unfortunately, this has been a long process. I apologise to residents for the delays we have endured and thank them for their patience.

It is my sincere hope that we can reconvene this process as soon as possible and begin consultation with all stakeholders and the community. Until such time though, dog off-leash beaches exist at Red Beach, at the Southern end of Woorim and at the dog offleash facility at Cosmos Park. Dog off-leash facilities are also budgeted for construction in both Bellara and Sandstone Point in the next 9 months and further information about the location of these facilities will be published in the coming months.

Letter to the Editor re vandalised signs I am a concerned parent, hard worker and a huge community participant who thinks the recent criminal damage done on nearly every poster of our LNP Candidate for Pumicestone was discriminative, not only is it an eye saw, it was heart wrenching when my 2 daughters had asked what does those words mean?

Bully and Bone etc….

My 7 year old can read and said to me, mum, we aren’t allowed to bully at school, so why are grownups allowed to? What is a mother to really say to that statement? Especially

Letters to the Editor... when you know that children LOOK, LISTEN AND LEARN. So I now challenge these people who are behind this sickened behaviour to answer my question, and the challenge is very simple…….Please explain why you would do such a thing??? our children are our next generation who need not to witness adults being brainwashed to do what other people want them to do. Our community needs to stick together and show our children right from wrong.

If I was the member for Pumicestone I would come out and say he does not condone this behaviour in any way. There has not been one of his billboards vandalised like this.

I would like to reply to a letter Rangers Putting the Fear in Locals While I empathise with your physical problem, that’s where the empathy ends.

Dogs should be leashed and under control at all times. Having witnessed, and spoken to many people who have had their dogs savaged by so called under control dogs not on leashes.

Owners have also been attacked trying to protect their beloved pet.

The leash is for your dog’s protection, and other dogs and owner’s protection.

I applaud the Ranger and wish there were more to police the law, exactly what they were doing.

I’m sure Cr Savage has more important issues than dogs being able to go for a swim or run wild.

Let everyone enjoy this beautiful area we live in. Dogs, and their owners are entitled to go for a walk, meet other dogs sniff around have a chat safely. I would like to end with your comment that “most off leashed dogs are fully under control”. Sorry not good enough!

Rangers Putting the Fear in Locals??

I believe the Rangers are doing a fine job informing locals of the regulations relating to dogs being off leash, the only thing is that there should be more Rangers.

Making the suggested areas into off-leash is not a environmentally good idea, even if allowed between 5.00am and 6.00am, or even from 5pm to 8am. You only have to go to some of the current off-leash areas to experience the bags of discarded poo!! (Please see the Bribie Weekly Friday Sept 29th ‘’Your Say’’ Dog Issues). Also, it would be interesting to know how anyone can manage to pick up any dog mess from the confines of their motor scooters.

Will all the dog walkers be able to see where their pets have deposited excitement in the grass and foreshore during the hours of darkness and pick it up?

Non dog walkers, cyclists and visitors to the Island during late afternoon and early morning using these areas would not find it a good experience with having dogs running around off-leash and doing their business.

Bribie Island is a small Island Community and to compare it to the Dog Friendly beaches on the Sunshine Coast is not a practical option.

Ian D Hill Bellara Dear dog owners i have read so much lately of how you need more room on our beaches for your pets to run free, it is nice of you to care so much for your pets but i live at Woorim and to walk on the south end of Woorim beach where the dogs run free you are met with dogs running up to strangers on the beach and sometimes jumping up on you as the owners just walk along letting there pets do what they want.

My wife has had a hip replacement and this did happen to her, we have also been witness to dogs doing there poops on the beach and the owners seem to think because they are on the beach it doesn’t need to be picked up, some owners do pick it up and put in the black plastic bags but then leave the bag on the beach to be washed out in the next hight tide this would effect the environment as turtles may swallow the bags and die, so until owners learn how to look after there pets and the environment i think you have enough space for your pets to play in.

Response from Rick Williams MP In response to several letters from Issue 15 and 16, Dear Editor firstly let me say I do not answer questions from unidentified writer’s i.e. A Voter who is not on the electoral roll.

In the 15th edition with regard to the pine plantations, they are on 99-year leases issued decades ago, between National Parks and Forestry. Normally a yield of 3 to 4 crops would be achieved over that time and then the land would revert back to National Parks, this has happened with one such section on Bribie Island 7 years ago. That parcel to the north of Middle Swamp Crossing and to the east of the Hall Rd has been handed back to National Parks.

Bribie Island Road 4 lane works from Bestmann Rd East to Saint Roads was delivered under the Labor Government in 1999, the Bruce Highway to Hickey Road was delivered by Labor’s Carryn Sullivan in 2010 and the section from Sylvan Shores Caravan Park to the Ningi Transfer Station was delivered by Labor. While I’m at it the Caboolture Hospital was delivered by Labor’s John Sullivan in 1991, the Caboolture Mental Health Facility and Ningi Ambulance Station

by Labor’s Carryn Sullivan in 2012 (only opened by Lisa France) Yes Labor has delivered the recent Transfer Station improvements because of the 9 reported accidents there, the Aylward Road lights because of numerous accidents, the Beames Road (Ambulance emergency lights) to enable ambulances to come out safely and the Peel Road lights where there was fatality and continuous accidents. These were all funded under “Safer Roads Sooner”, a program where funding cannot exceed $5 million in project cost. The Old Toorbul Point

Continued from page 3 Road lights are costing $10.4 Million because it includes realignment of Bribie Island Road in preparation for future 4 lanes. I have also secured $3 million for the survey and design works of the Flood section west of Old Toorbul Point Road with a view to 4 lanes being constructed.

Some road works require trees to be removed on the sides of the road to allow a safety buffer zone, this is standard practice. I make no apology for delivering safer roads, it is my intention to see all of Bribie Island Road 4 lanes and although it’s not due until 2031, If the opportunity presents itself to get a new bridge I will take it. However building a replacement bridge does not mean that any population increase on the Island will happen, TMR have agreed that the bridge is sound but like all structures they have a life expectancy. In June 2016, Government TMR decided on the corridor for a future new bridge and the land on the Bribie side was purchased as part of the Palaszczuk Labor Governments Early Acquisition Policy.

I do not make hollow promises, but as you can see, I do make it a habit of delivering for my community.

Baby You Turn me on I was listening to a young person’s song recently by a popular group of singers and I found myself listening, without any real intention to do so, to the words of this particular song which began to take me a step back in my concentration a little, that quoted “You’ve got a body that turns me on – You’ve got a body that turns me on crazy” and the song continued on with this type of lyric until

Without attempting to make my point longer than I think I need to, the song never even mentioned the beautiful sensual sound of a woman’s voice, the heart lifting inner warmth you get from the glorious smile of a woman, also not a word on the importance of a great personality and in some cases a sensitive sense of humour.

In my personal opinion for what it’s worth, I wouldn’t like to think that this generation of young ladies were concentrating on songs and lyrics particularly in the lyrics of this song to believe that this is the correct and universally accepted procedure to begin a partnership or relationship on with a future permanent boyfriend, partner or husband.

Once again I reiterate to residents that I welcome your feedback, concerns and suggestions at any time.

Dear Editor, I write in response to a concern raised by Jan van Arnhem in issue 16 of the “Island and Surrounds”. Firstly, thank you for your feedback and raising your concerns and support for similar concerns shared by M. Roberts in a previous edition. I discuss population capping with concerned residents regularly and I often speak about the need for balance.

Bribie Island is a precious place and the environment we have here is both beautiful but sensitive. We need to strike the balance right when it comes to residents and the environment and this isn’t always easy.

Whilst I know residents would like to see a formal population cap on Bribie Island, I am unaware of any State Government Legislation that provides council (via planning schemes) the opportunity to develop or implement such a population cap. However, what we can do is engage with and work with residents at every opportunity to ensure that, as your elected representatives, we are advocating for you and making informed decisions based on what you, our community, want to see.

Only through listening to you can we really understand what our community want. We won’t always be able to please everyone, and we won’t always be able to achieve the things we hope to achieve, but we can try our best to fight for your views.

Once again I reiterate to residents that I welcome your feedback, concerns and suggestions at any time.

The Palaszczuk Labor Government has tonight doubled-down in its support for a summer power-rationing plan that would see Queenslanders urged to set their airconditioners to 26 degrees or above to avoid blackouts.

All Labor MP’s voted against a motion by the LNP to condemn power rationing and air conditioning controls on Queenslanders.

LNP motion: This House condemns the Palaszczuk Government for its Summer Preparedness Plan asking Queenslanders to put their air-conditioners to 26 degrees or above to avoid blackouts.

LNP Shadow Energy Minister Michael Hart said Labor has hit a new low by asking Queenslanders to ration their energy use and keep their air-conditioning at 26 degrees – simply to prop up their headlong rush to renewable energy.

“What have we come to when Annastacia Palaszczuk is telling Queenslanders to ration their electricity use and set their air

“Government frontbencher Glenn Butcher confirmed summer blackouts under Labor were certain and justified their power rationing plan, saying in Parliament it prepared for: “…these possible emergencies that are coming.”

BRIBIE Island beach visitors can help protect local turtle hatchlings thanks to new signs unveiled on Friday.

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has installed two turtle nesting signs, at Bribie Island 4wd access points ahead of the upcoming nesting season.

Speaking from Woorim Beach today, National Parks Minister Steven Miles said the signs had been installed to alert tourists and residents of the island they were visiting a turtle nesting habitat.

“The Moreton Bay area is home to a big sea turtle population,” Mr Miles said.

“Every year, dozens of turtles come to the beaches in the area to lay their eggs, before the hatchlings make their way to the water.

“The pitter patter of tiny flippers is just another great attraction on Bribie Island, along with the dugongs and dolphins.

“But it’s easy to miss a turtle nest buried in the sand and these signs will let people know to be careful and slow down.”

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said he raised the idea of signs with the Minister after too many people were getting too close to the turtle nests.

“I was using Facebook to tell people to be careful during turtle season but this will reach everyone.

“Visitors love coming to see the turtles nest on the beach and little ones hatch.

“We know most people want to protect these little guys as much as we do and

this will help them avoid disturbing turtle nests.”

Turtle rescue volunteer with the Bribie Island Environmental Protection Association (BIEPA) Helen Twaddle said the turtles nesting on Bribie were vital to the wider ecosystem. Spokesperson for BIEPA Emma Carter was there on Friday the 20th of October at the entrance to the Woorim Beach access track with Member for Pumicestone Mr Rick Williams and Minister Steven Miles to unveil the signs, Emma expressed how pleased she was to see the signs go up and said “awareness is so important for our locals and visitors who 4WD on our beautiful beach” she congratulated Mr Rick Williams Member for Pumicestone and Minister for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Steven Miles for taking action.

Loggerheads are listed as endangered and are protected under national and state legislation and it is estimated that only one in 1000 reach maturity.

Emma said “In south eastern Queensland, turtles begin mating in late October, with most mating reaching from November to early December. In south eastern Queensland, turtles begin mating in late October, the signs installed are perfect timing for this year’s hatching.”

“It is important we do everything we can to protect them, through public education and minimising accidental habitat destruction.”

QPWS staff have installed signs at the Ocean Beach northern access track and the Woorim Beach access track.

Moreton Bay Regional Council (MBRC)

Just one of the nests on Bribie Island from the 2016-17 nesting season, these are loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) have installed another sign at the beach access track at Benelong Street Woorim.

Mr Williams said a further two signs will be installed by the MBRC after further consultation on where the signs should go.

“These turtle nesting signs explain to people in the area that turtles will be visiting the Moreton Bay beaches more frequently between about November and March,” Mr Williams said.

“It is everyone’s responsibility to help us look after our turtles and their hatchlings.”

The cost for the project to date is $3788.57 in total.

Local Bongaree Residents raise money for Breast Cancer in their front yard RESIDENTS in Bongaree Pat McIntyre and Lyndell Mickelborough have an annual afternoon tea in their front yard to raise money for Breast Cancer. This year it was on 11 October and it was the largest to date, with over 75 ladies turning up in pink. It was a gold coin donation on arrival and most ladies bought a plate.

Local Businesses supplied prizes along with the generosity of local ladies. There were about 45 prizes to give out from raffle tickets being sold.

Bribie Islands Famous Dragons Abreast ladies were there, the oldest surviving member Pat Daly who is 94 years young got up and told us about her experience with cancer and how she survived this hideous disease, Pat has been cancer free for over 2 decades now, she said that “being part of Dragons Abreast Bribie Island has been wonderful for her.”

Pat and Lyndell have been putting this event on for five years now at their home in Bongaree and this year was by far the largest, the ladies were so please to see 75 people or more show up this year to support and raise money for Breast Cancer. Lyndell said the afternoon is by word of mouth, ladies they know from the gym, friends and friends of friends.

Leonie Dyer President of the Dragons Abreast Bribie Island told us some hilarious stories about the commentating of the races around Australia they participate in with the names of the boats, you can imagine the commentary when you have boats called Titty Titty Bang Bang and Missa Bit Of Titty.

6 In 2016, when the US State of Illinois, population 12.5 million, decided to harness the intimate and trusted relationship between its’ 88,000 Beauticians and Hair Stylists and their clients, it set a precedent which mandated that stylists in the State of Illinois undertake training in domestic violence and sexual abuse prevention as part of their professional licensing process adding an additional hour to the 14 hours of continuing education for the license renewal every two years. This information caught the eye of one very switched on Australian Salon Owner, Sonia Colvin who was already on the journey of providing resources and support for victims of domestic abuse through her own Salon on Bribie Island, Queensland.

This story celebrates the journey of Sonia Colvin who recognised the duty of care and burden that her profession unknowingly bestowed upon her when she made the choice to join the trusted and intimate hairdressing profession.

The very first words Sonia Colvin spoke to me as we sat down to prepare for our interview overlooking the local bowls club were, “I am just a Hairdresser, just a Hairdresser.” To me, that was like saying, “Oh My God, I am so sorry, I do apologise but I think you may have the wrong person. It isn’t me who is about to unleash my new vision for Hairdressers with Hearts on the community – I had nothing to do with it.” Hilarious, I thought, but fortunately I had undertaken enough research to know that I was on the right track and ironically only 30 minutes earlier on the same day, I had sat through an outstanding 10-minute presentation that Sonia Colvin delivered to a group of local supporters which accurately described Sonia’s vision for the future. I sensed that Sonia was bracing herself for my imminent interrogation of her life. It’s can’t be easy sitting in front of a relative stranger, unravelling your life story and having it recorded in an environment when trust and safety are central to a relationship.

When you meet Sonia Colvin, you come face to face with an intelligent, charismatic, spirited and extremely humble woman. Born in Gosford, a small town in central New South Wales, located 76 kilometres north of Sydney, Sonia was raised by her loving mum and dad who were experienced Race Horse Trainers and avid supporters of the AFL Sydney Swans.

Up until the age of 13, Sonia Colvin spent much of her young days hanging around Sydney Race Tracks living the glamorous Sydney-Centric lifestyle with her two brothers. Fine food, fizzy soft drinks, fast horses, easy money and famous people, or as it turned out later, some not-so famous characters populated their upmarket Sydney lifestyle. As Sonia describes, her life was buzzing until the age of 13 when Sonia’s Mum and Dad moved their family to Barellan, a small farming community located between Griffith and Wagga Wagga in Central New South Wales, following the death of Sonia’s grandfather.

Sonia said, “The move to Barellan was a very big change for our family. Life for mum and dad was very busy and stressful managing cattle, sheep, rice, wheat and irrigation farms. I think that as a 13-yearold, I was probably a little ignorant of the stress, considering that we had people in our community committing suicide,” she said, “Farming was very tough in the 1980’s, especially when you consider that interest rates were sitting around 19%.”

Despite demonstrating an outstanding academic ability and a passion for playing junior AFL throughout her schooling years, Sonia’s professional calling was never in question. From the age of 10 and up until the age of 14, Sonia Colvin

It was ironic that the very week in 1988 that I was offered my Hairdressing Apprenticeship, I also

Over the next 10-15 years, Sonia Colvin was driven to succeed working and developing her skills across the service industries, real estate and property development. Along the journey, Sonia has raised her two gorgeous children with the support of family and

purpose and gift to create, communicate, cut and style hair. She said, “You can either cut it or you can’t and I am fortunate to have a special gift that allows me to visualise and style hair through cutting, shaping, integrating colour and connecting with people.” It was this passion for all things hair and people that inspired Sonia Colvin to return to the business of hairdressing and in 2011, launched her new one-woman show on the beautiful Bribie Island, Queensland.

Sonia said, “It’s been a very tough journey and the love and support of my mum & dad, two amazing children, my friends and my beautiful husband and have inspired me to move forward. It’s so nice to arrive home to a running bath after such a huge day of cutting hair and communicating with people.” Sonia said, “I am so proud of my children and it’s so nice to see my mum laughing so much these days and enjoying life together with my amazing dad. They say that it takes time to heal and I feel that we are all healing and growing together.”

A few days later after meeting Sonia, I decided to visit the engine room of the Sonia Colvin Show, her Salon Business on Bribie Island. I wanted to check some facts, meet a few clients and take a few happy snaps. You enter Sonia’s salon through a large sliding glass door into a 3x6 metre hair studio fitted with six cutting stations down both sides, two wash points, a 3-seater waiting bench and a rear kitchenette and storage zone. On the day I visited the salon, every seat was occupied, including one of the wash stations. It was a warm day outside and thankfully the air conditioning was delivering a mild Melbourne winters day inside, ok let’s call it 18 degrees. Sonia was very welcoming and at the same time focussed on the multi-hair style show of fitting rollers, preparing foils, trimming fringes, setting colour types and chatting about everything hair, life and family. The conversations were considered and the buzz was electric – I was aware that my presence may have unsettled a few of the clients so I quickly became involved with helping place a hair dryer on one client and had a chat to the other – we took a few funny photos which seemed to break the ice.

Sonia said, “Hairdressing salons are quite unique in the fact that they are a bit like a safe place where clients come in take a seat, vent, share, cry, laugh and share their most personal details both their happiest and saddest times and seek help and guidance. It could be about themselves, their partners, children, grandchildren, grand parents, friends or neighbours and they don’t just share it with the Hairdresser, they talk to the other clients in the salon seeking and giving advice.” She said, “It’s hard to explain the

atmosphere and culture of a salon. I think it’s because hairdressers are licenced to touch that people open-up so much and so quickly. There is also an enormous amount of trust that clients put into their hairdressers, trusting them with their hair – a woman’s hair is so important to her.” she said, “Hairdressers have the skills to make women look younger with magic cream to cover those grey hairs, look more attractive with style cuts and perms.

Hairdressers can make the worst hair look amazing with just a set or a blow dry.”

She said, Hairdressers are very much the front line, with some 200-people walking

We can control what we as professionals say in a salon environment but you can’t control what your clients want to share with others in the unique safe environment of the salon.” Sonia said, “I didn’t know of or have access to the right resources to help my clients.

Clients of hairdressing salons start off as customers but very quickly become friends, sharing their lives with their hairdressers and often seeking help and advice. At the end of the day your clients are your friends and nobody wants to see their friends in trouble or not be able to assist them getting the right help.”

In 2016, Sonia Colvin decided it was time to take some action and created the group ‘Hairdressers with Hearts.’ The purpose of Hairdressers with Hearts is to give back to people in need and at the same time create a national legislative change that mandates continuing education within the Salon Industry to recognise and provide resources for community members affected by Domestic Abuse. It is a bold and visionary undertaking and Sonia is aiming to encourage Salons on Bribie Island to take a leadership role in a pilot program before tackling the nation. On Saturday 7th October 2017, at a community meeting, Hairdressers with Hearts formed an interim committee on Bribie Island. Jenny Thomas, Interim Secretary for Hairdressers with Hearts said, “We are taking the first exciting steps to establishing a not-for- profit organisation and Hairdressers with Hearts can now move forward to make this vision a reality. We would like to thank everyone who has supported Hairdressers for Hearts over the past 12 months.” She said, “We will provide updates in the paper for interested parties over the next few months and anyone that would like to be included on our email list may contact us directly.”

Fiona, from the Local Centre Against Domestic Abuse agreed that the Hair Dressing Profession is one of the most vulnerable professions who are regularly exposed to clients sharing unsolicited personal information and life events including domestic abuse within the safety of a salon. Fiona said, “Sonia has done a fantastic job with creating Hairdressers with Hearts. The Centre Against Domestic Abuse provides resource information as well as referring clients who have moved past the Survival and Safety Stage of their journey to the salon for a special pamper.

We receive such amazing feedback from our clients.” Fiona said, “There were a few examples across New South Wales and Victoria where some of the Domestic

Over 88,000 salon professionals are being trained across Illinois. That’s 88,000 more individuals that will be able to have conversations with family and friends and clients, and that raises awareness about domestic violence and sexual assault.

Sonia’s business treats clients from the Centre Against Domestic Abuse every week. These clients are supplied with a complimentary makeover including cut, colour, perm, blow dry, beauty services and products donated by clients. The clients also receive a free coffee donated by the local café, lunch donated by other clients and make-up donated by the local pharmacy.

Sonia Colvin is a humble, resilient, energetic, creative, empathetic, communicative and humorous person who inspires people to take positive actions for the benefit of many. The difference between Sonia Colvin and many others is her inbuilt selfless compassion and ability to communicate with anyone in a respectful manner.

Despite being a tragic AFL Geelong Cats Supporter, Sonia Colvin has a wish-list as long at the Bribie Island Bridge to grow her vision into the future. It was a pleasure to share a story of another extraordinary Australian making such a difference to the community.

New project being carried out in the Beachmere South Reserve

Being bitten by a snake at home is more likely YOU are more likely to be bitten by a snake near your home than out in the bush, says the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

There is a new project being carried out in the Beachmere South Reserve with the objective to increase the tidal exchange between the bay and the adjacent coastal wetland.

The Beachmere Reserve tidal wetland has a high ecological value and provides critical habitat for wildlife including fish and shorebirds. However, over the last 15-20 years the health of the mangroves in the wetland has deteriorated and large areas of mangrove dieback have been identified.

Studies undertaken at the site suggest that the likely cause of progressive dieback of the mangroves relates to increased ponding and changes to the hydrology of the catchment from development over the last 50 years.

A channel at the northern end of the site was constructed in 2010 to enable flood waters from Beachmere to drain through the wetland out to Deception Bay and this channel resulted in improved tidal exchange between the wetland and the bay and was consistent with the abovementioned study recommendations.

Council has continued to monitor the site and this has confirmed that mangrove growth has improved at the head of the channel in the wetland creating a positive outcome for local wildlife providing shelter and food for fish.

As the northern channel has silted up slightly since construction it is proposed to be marginally increased in size to continue to promote tidal water exchange and an additional channel further to the south is proposed to further improve tidal exchange to the southern areas of the wetland.

As the existing and proposed channels limit safe pedestrian access along the foreshore, crossings with a minimal footprint are proposed at each channel.

During the period of construction, please ensure you observe the instructions of the work crews and signage and apologies for any inconvenience during this time.

The new advice which comes as we head into snake season, is based on the Australian Snakebite Project, the most comprehensive study ever carried out, involving 1500 patients from 2005 to 2015. Despite only 2% of snake bite cases resulting in death, a poisonous snake bite can have dramatic and long-term health implications.

The biggest change has been to remove the longstanding advice to identify the colour and type of snake.

Recent medical advancements means that any snake bite can be treated with generic antivenene, meaning exact identification is no longer necessary. Instead, the advice now is to seek help as soon as possible and keep your movement down to a minimum.

We honoured our Emergency Service workers at Parliament House. The message they promote is “Get Ready” for storm season. I was with Minister Ryan and our wonderful volunteer members from Caboolture and Bribie Island.

I attended the Multicultural Community Reception with our Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and my guests, Mr Saleem and Dr Najwa Mohammed, with friends from the Taiwanese community and Luisa Miller from the Caboolture Neighbourhood Centre.

Bribie Island Emergency Services Expo was a great day. I Joined Minister Mark Ryan, Susan Lamb MP, Cr Savige and Police Superintendent Mick Brady. The rain held off for the event from 10 until 2 pm and about 2000 people ventured out. A job well done! Congratulations to Nathan and his team of organisers.

Paul Garcia, Edith Cuffe and others from the Abbey Museum met with Tourism Minister, Kate Jones, Police Minister Mark Ryan, members of Tourism QLD and myself to advise of a concept that will see the Abbey Museum grow to be an all year round Tourism and Educational extravaganza similar to Sovereign Hill. Great for Tourism, Education and Employment in Pumicestone.

We inspected the construction site of the new 300 FREE car parks at Caboolture Hospital. Hon. Mark Ryan and I promised and we’ve delivered for Labor. It will be open in about a month. It will also deliver a separate road entrance off Mewett St at the Morning View St roundabout for ambulances only that will access the Emergency Department unhindered by other traffic. Thank you for your patience during construction.

I joined Audrey Dadd, her 3 daughters and neighbours for Audrey’s 100th Birthday. It was great to sit and chat about her life. Audrey and her late husband were posted to many places around Australia. It was a labour of love as Audrey’s husband was a Minister for the Church.

Hon. Mark Ryan and I inspected the Specialist Outpatient Centre at the Caboolture Hospital. The Centre has 28 specialist rooms and will be finished in a month or so. It also has an additional 55 new FREE car parks. This was promised and is now being delivered by Labor.

I was Acting Deputy Speaker of the House for Youth Parliament in Brisbane, it was great to see such aspiring young people engaging in the world of politics. They were very well behaved in comparison with the real thing. I’ll say no more.

Bribie Island State School P&C President Jo Myers and Acting Principal Simone Woodham accept the Palaszczuk Government Grant of $20,000 that will provide Air-conditioning for 2 classrooms.

Lift 4 at the Caboolture Hospital is the first of four lifts to be replaced. They have been breaking down regularly and Labor is fixing them. They will be done one at a time and I thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.

It was a pleasure to announce the Palaszczuk Government is about to fund Concrete platforms where there is no kerb at bus stops throughout Queensland, including 12 in Ningi, Sandstone Point and Bribie. These platforms will reduce the steep angle of the bus ramp enabling passengers using mobility devices to access the bus safely. Bribie Island Coaches bus driver, Greg Eaves approached me to get the ball rolling. Cr Savige’s MBRC team will receive the funding from the State and do the construction work. Community working together thanks everyone, team effort.

I joined Susan Lamb MP, Federal Member for Longman and MBRC Cr Brooke Savige at the NBN rally to get the Turnbull Federal Government to fix our NBN. It is an absolute disgrace that our new NBN internet is slower and drops out more than the internet in some third world countries. Sign the petition. Three levels of Government working together as we should.

Mr & Mrs Con and Beverley Galtos of Banksia Beach celebrated their 0th Wedding Anniversary with their four children and grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren on the 12th of October. That’s a uiver full for this wonderful couple. Their list of business and social achievements is endless but they owned the Inala Skating Rink and Mount Gravatt Skateway, where my wife Cheryl learnt to skate.

I was off to the Bribie Island Scouts to look at the new zero-turn mower, brush cutter, blower and galvanised box trailer that they bought with the Palaszczuk Government Grant. They put them to use straight away. Thanks, should make life easier for you all.

Soon I will turn on our Community Christmas Lights display at Ningi. This means we are very close to Christmas. What a wonderful time of the year.

I took a look at the State of the Art equipment on the VMR fleet. The equipment includes the ability to spot someone in the water in the dark.

It is amazing what these volunteers do for our community.

Mr P to students, Ken Piva has been chaplain at Bribie Island State School for 10 years. He is a very humble man of God and tireless community worker. We came together to honour him for his 10 years of dedicated service to our community. Over the past month, I’ve been listening to local families about two critical areas of Government policy that touch us all – jobs and health. In a series of public hearings, members of our community and stakeholders came to speak with me about the lack of Government support available in terms of looking for work and the unacceptable costs involved with a simple visit to the doctor. It’s hard hearing these stories when the Government’s freeze to the Medicare rebate could be lifted immediately! The Government’s employment programs are also falling to pieces; people are being mucked around, matched with jobs that aren’t appropriate and placed in courses which they’re already qualified. It seems that jobseekers are just another number to Malcolm Turnbull. I’m working with Labor to formulate policies which actually assist people in finding work and provide Bribie’s families with access to affordable healthcare.

TURNBULL GOVERNMENT MUST ACT TO ADDRESS NBN CRISIS Member for Longman Susan Lamb MP today called on the Turnbull Government to heed expert and community advice and act to fix systemic issues of faults, failed connections, reliability and chronic speed issues occurring across the NBN network.

“People are fed up. They want answers and they want solutions.

“It’s high time the Turnbull Government acts to address these issues by: • Directing NBN to complete, as much as possible, the remaining fixed lined network using fibre optic •Overhaul the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) to give it more power and ability to resolve consumer disputes •Address consumer and supplier rights to provide better protections and remedies for service failures”

“It’s obvious to me, it’s obvious to the community, and it should be obvious to the government. The NBN rollout is failing Longman’s residents and businesses,” she said.

“I’m still listening to my constituents of course, that’s why I’ve held a mobile office and gone doorknocking with the Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Stephen Jones,” Ms Lamb said.

Billions have been spent on the NBN rollout but, sadly, many locals have felt their service has gone backwards.

“It’s vital we allow regular Australians have a say in fixing the mess Turnbull’s NBN is in.”

“Malcolm Turnbull’s flawed copper technology choices and the disinterest shown by the Turnbull has left Longman in the dark ages,” Ms Lamb said. “Some residents and businesses have been left without even a phone line, unheard of in Australia decades. Everyone has a phone line.”

Australia can’t afford to keep spending billions on an NBN that is not delivering.

To add insult to injury, local residents and businesses alike are being forced to play the NBN “ping-pong”, where they’re bounced between the network operator and their phone company.

This can often continue for weeks and months at a time.

Shadow Minister for Regional Communications, Stephen Jones MP, said the Government cannot continue to ignore this crisis.

Our local communities deserve better.

MEDICARE TASKFORCE IN LONGMAN FOR A HEALTH CHECK Labor’s Medicare Taskforce was in Longman on Thursday 5th of October, continuing its nationwide series of community consultations about Australia’s healthcare system.

Federal Member for Longman Susan Lamb said she invited the Taskforce to Longman to hear directly from her community about the growing pressures of healthcare costs and access to care in the area.

“At the Longman Health Reference Committee, the other week, our local practitioners and stakeholders came forward with serious concerns about the affordability and accessibility of healthcare in our area,” Ms Lamb said. “Members of our community now have the opportunity to share their experience with the barriers in accessing quality healthcare at the Taskforce hearing.”

“The Turnbull Government’s continued attacks on our health care system, including delaying the removal of their Medicare rebate freeze, will most impact the people who can afford it the least.”

“People in Queensland, people in Longman are paying on average $7.70 more to see a General Practitioner.”

“With the median weekly personal income in Longman sitting at just $580, for someone living in Caboolture or Burpengary, $7.70 could mean a choice between a visit to the doctor or dinner on the table.”

Taskforce Chair Sharon Claydon MP said the taskforce has been visiting communities around Australia talking to both healthcare professionals and consumers, and the impact of this government’s unfair health policy is clear.

“Malcolm Turnbull’s decision to delay the removal of the Medicare rebate freeze is seeing healthcare costs rise and the most vulnerable in our community are missing out.” Ms Claydon said.

“This Government does not see Australian’s health care costs as an issue.

They are happy to spend $122 million on a non-binding, non-compulsory postal survey, but sit by while out of pocket costs climb.”

Taskforce Deputy Chair Dr Mike Freelander MP, who has had over 30 years’ experience as a paediatrician, said if the freeze is not reversed immediately many Australians will go without the critical healthcare they need.

“The rising cost of healthcare is putting more and more pressure on the emergency waiting rooms in our hospitals,” Dr Freelander said.

The Medicare Taskforce has been holding consultations with practitioners, consumers and health service organisations across the country. The outcomes of the Taskforce will help inform future Labor policy.

Beachmere Locals Bag a Bargain

Beachmere’s Car Boot Sale just celebrated their first birthday and, although they may not be as big as some markets in the area, they continue to offer the service initially demanded by Beachmere locals.

Over twelve months ago, BANG started the Beachmere Car Boot Sale in the IGA carpark. Just once a month on the first Sunday of the month, the Car Boot Sale offers an opportunity for locals to sell some trash, some treasure, some unwanted or unnecessary items.

BANG member, Di Hill offered an explanation, “We wanted somewhere for locals to be able to sell their unwanted items. Some people don’t have a “garage” and some people don’t want visitors to their house so Garage Sales don’t work

for them. Other people don’t want to, or know how to, sell things on the internet sites.

We wanted to give locals an opportunity to raise a little extra income by holding a stall and selling craft or household, garden or outdoor items.”

The Car Boot Sale has unearthed some local talent with home made handicraft, woodcraft, wooden toys, candles and soaps.

It’s also a great way of downsizing and we often have residents selling their unwanted items as they start to travel. Then we have the locals returning from their travels and selling all the caravan and camping items.

Each month there are different stalls selling a range of different things - it’s a great way to pick up a bargain.”

The Beachmere Car Boot Sale is on the first Sunday in the month at the Beachmere Village Shopping Ctr carpark from 7am till 11am (excluding January).

Beachmere Lighting Up for Christmas Beachmere Community Carols is the next BIG event on the Beachmere Festival Calendar.

Clayton Park will be the venue for family festivities with a Treasure Hunt and a Christmas Costume Parade while the Moreton Bay Singers, led by Musical Director Kim Kirkman, will lead the community in a Concert and Carols program.

Craft and xmas gift stalls as well as food vans, face painting and Santa Sack raffles will keep the whole family entertained until a Special Guest arrives later in the evening.

“The Moreton Bay Singers are well into rehearsals and we have commenced auditions for soloists for the concert portion of the program”, said Kim Kirkman, choir master and director.

The winner of the Beachmere Christmas Lights competition will also be announced and locals will need to start planning and installing their Christmas Lights for judging from Friday, 9 December. The Beachmere Christmas Lights Trail was a huge success last year and it is aimed to be bigger and better this year.

Beachmere Community Carols will be held in Clayton Park on Saturday, 16 December from 4pm to 7pm.

Beachmere Residents Urged to Report All Crimes and Incidents “A commitment to community groups and community members in the broader Moreton Policing District in order to stop crime, reduce road trauma and make all communities safer including Beachmere and neighbouring suburbs” is the comment received from Senior Sergeant Officer in Charge of Caboolture Police Station Pat O’Loughlin.

At a series of meetings held in Beachmere recently Snr Sgt O’Loughlin encouraged everyone to report all crime, domestic violence incidents, vehicles or persons acting suspiciously or provide any information that could assist the police.

“This will allow us to better co-ordinate our services and gain a better awareness of what’s happening in your area”, he said.

Other outcomes from these meetings have been a renewed attendance at local Neighbourhood Watch meetings, the introduction of Coffee with a Cop at the Beach Shak café and the investigation of the introduction of new technologies to enhance the safety of our community.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO WAVE!

Some people are terrified of spiders, snakes or heights and those who aren’t afraid of these things may wonder why, but can usually understand the fear even if they don’t feel it themselves.

But even more terrifying for some people are singlets! Do you consider them terrifying? Do you dream of a life when a singlet isn’t scary? In Summer do you cringe when it’s time to say goodbye to your family and friends because you don’t want to wave with your “floppy back of arm” or as we fitness professionals call it The Terrifying Triceps Tremors! (Actually, I just made that up) I’m sure by know you know that I ride a motorbike, and once spring arrives I put away the heavy leather jacket and wear a singlet and a leather vest. Yeah, I guess I should be concerned about the safety issue, but in reality I am far more aware of Triceps Tremors! If you think the top of your arm wobbles when you wave goodbye, imagine what it would do at 100kms an hour!

I have even found myself purposely changing hand position to tighten my arm when overtaking a car because, God forbid, strangers may see my triceps wobble as I pass by. Ridiculous I know, especially since 1. I have pretty tight triceps, and 2. Even young blokes with arms like Thor have flapping triceps at 100kms an hour. (Yes I have checked them out, but only for the purpose of research, honest!)

Do the blokes care? Of course not! Just

like a lot of them don’t care that the hair on their back is longer than that on their head or that the only way they know they have feet somewhere below their belly (that’s resting on the bike tank) is because someone helped them put on boots.

Do most women care – absolutely, and some care so much that they don’t wear clothes that are comfortable or that they love. Should men care – damn right they should and for exactly the same reason the women should care, not because of how they look but because of their health and how they feel!

I refuse to read any “womens” magazines, yes even the supposedly “fitness” ones because of the pressure they all place on how women should look. Next time you are in a magazine shop check out the front covers of some of them. I’m sure you will find that on the front of the magazines aimed at women there are toned young women smiling with tight young bodies and super white teeth.

Now check out the magazines for men…. Ohhh look there are toned young women smiling with tight young bodies and super white teeth. Hang on! Where are the toned young men smiling at the blokes telling them that if they want to be happy, successful and a wonderful husband they need to wear size 28 shorts, have 8 pack abs and have biceps of the gods to hug their partners?

Senior Gentle Exercises Have Some Fun Before You Start

Have a stable high backed chair for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

STAR “JUMPS”

Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Extend both feet out to the side at the same time as if you were doing a wide jump At the same time bring your arms up so you form a “Star” Bring your feet and arms back to the starting position Keep the movements SLOW AND STEADY You can do the legs and arm movements separately or one side at a time if you prefer Repeat 10 TIMES or as many times as you feel comfortable doing

SEATED FRONT BOXING

Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart.

Bring both your hands up to your chest and gently clench your fists “Punch” with one arm bring your arm straight forward until it is fully extended, but keep your other hand close to your chest. Swap arms and “Punch” with your other hand.

Repeat the movements as if you were slowly trying to punch a boxing bag. Repeat as many times as you comfortably can and then rest.

ANKLE ALPHABET

Use a stable chair and sit comfortably with your back supported Raise one foot at a time and extending your lower leg “write” the alphabet with your foot – this will use all your ankle joint and muscles Repeat with your other leg You can repeat the alphabet with each foot as many times as is comfortable for you.

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start

(Yep, I’m kind of shouting) Everyone should love how they look, you are individual and unique and beautiful in your own amazing way, but you must also remember that the way you look is a very clear and honest reflection of your health.

But then, there is, too, something beautiful, unrelated, a light in the orange tree, if you’re John Shaw Neilson, and I believe Bono again : ‘ every breaking wave on the shore tells the next one there’ll be one more “. So it’s something of a solace, that’s true as well. It’s all somewhat obscure… But I notice that the essence of that wave is true and in the right conditions, would be pure, a perfect, unbroken wave, even if last time or the time before, it was perturbed and was broken.

I think it’s the process of having to somehow unlove someone, just enough so that you can survive, burying the precious memories, in case you can’t survive them. And when is ‘enough ‘, and, where is the sense in that ? The yin to this yang is when someone dies, you get to keep the memories wrapped within your love, and you get to keep the love… so I am a sea-shanty without a boat, on a strange and unfamiliar sea.

How to stop being a people pleaser Dr Sue Eaglesham

People pleasing can be a real barrier to living an effective and happy life. Relying on approval from others to feel that you are okay is a quick pathway to feeling miserable, anxious, overburdened and resentful. If saying no is challenging for you, these are some ideas that might be helpful.

1) Learn to tell the difference between helping because it makes you feel good and helping because it makes you feel less guilty or bad. If helping makes you feel good about doing it, that’s fine. If you are saying yes to avoid feeling guilty or bad, then it is probably being done to keep the other person happy. If you find yourself feeling resentful and wishing you were not in the situation, there is a good chance you are people pleasing and you need to learn to say NO. By all means be kind, considerate and helpful but not at your own expense.

2 )Make sure that helping lines up with your values and interests. Make sure that your choices about helping are guided by what you are interested in and whether

they fit with your values. This is a good way to avoid doing things that are not a good fit and are about keeping others happy.

3) Practice being assertive. Don’t confuse being assertive with being aggressive. It is quite possible to be polite, respectful and assertive. You don’t have to stop being nice, but you do need to realise that you can’t compel others to be happy by doing whatever they ask. If being assertive is a foreign concept then try introducing it in small chunks. Try expressing an opinion about something small like your favourite food, movie or drink. Next try politely disagreeing with someone’s opinion but be prepared to listen respectfully and ask questions about their point of view. Soon you will be ready to say “no” to requests for help that are unreasonable. If you practice often enough this will become your new normal.

4) Set boundaries. Being able to set good boundaries and be clear about these does not make you a bad person. This comes back to saying “no” making you feel guilty or bad. The problem with this is that your self-worth becomes dependent on getting the approval of someone else. This is likely to lead you to feel anxious and out of control. Healthy boundaries let the good stuff in and keep the toxins out.

5 Stop saying sorry all the time. People pleasers over-apologise to smooth things over and keep everyone happy. It is not helpful to take responsibility for things you did not do, and it can make it look like others’ ridiculous requests or impulsive actions were reasonable and justified.

Save your apologies for when you actually do something wrong.

Don’t stop being kind, considerate, helpful or respectful as these all contribute to our community. Just learn to respect yourself as much as you do others.

Cambodia and Vietnam have both been amongst the most visited Asian countries in the last few years but why is that. Today I want to show you a little of Cambodia.

The most visited and well known of UNESCO sites in Asia is the temple of Angkor Wat dating back to the 12th century and at over 812 years is full of stories through the ages and introduces us to the many changes that have taken place over that time.

Like it or Not. As well as having a Pub and a Billabong, there was also a green lawn park that was nearly in the centre of the town ; a large park with some swings, no longer used for health and safety reasons, Councillor Wrenchpit had seen to that !

But it was a good park, the mob liked the way the lawns sloped down into the river which snaked through the town and which, was banked up by the old weir at the Eastern end of the town limits thereby creating a long, quiet stretch of water through the town and ending in the Billabong a few klicks to the West.

There was a bandstand, three sodium vapour lights, an old Moreton Bay fig tree, the dark side of which had become a toilet for blokes on the way home from the Pub ! It only stunk on hot days…but all the town dogs liked it and made their own contributions, if you know what I mean.

The park known as Tuggles Park, after an old mining family in the district, had a Park Supervision Committee, appointed by the local council and chaired by Councillor Wrenchpit’s mad sister, Marigold Wrenchpit.

Marigold Wrenchpit had never married, never even had a boyfriend, as far as most of the town blokes knew – although there was some doubt about that because a few years ago Tommy Tuggles was seen hanging about the Wrenchpit house a fair bit : that was before he was squashed under a bloody big hay baler whilst he was pissed and showing off on his dirt bike. Another story that !!

Marigold always had tawny ringlets of hair down to her waist, even now, when she was in her fifties and she always wore moleskins, big shirts hanging out and boots which squeaked when she walked. She also wore a rainbow coloured scarf tied in her hair. Her voice was high pitched, much like the top end of the church organ, and she was a fair demon at running Committees.

Her reputation for being mad came from her habit of singing the aria from Bizet’s Opera “ Carmen “ anytime, anywhere….. chemist shop, grocer shop, walking in the park, driving in her old ‘ puddle jumper ‘ Land Rover and so on. The singing sent all the town dogs up ; so Marigold was a fairly, noisy unit, but, she could run a bloody Committee.

And, on this day, she decided that her Committee would run a Halloween Night event in Tuggles Park. She called them all together for a ‘ extra-ordinary meeting ‘, although old Bob Plump, one of the committee members and ex leg spin bowler, said all the meetings were ‘ bloody extra-bloody-ordinary anyway.’

Everybody got a job. Bob had to organize the trestle tables, chairs, toilet cleaning and strings of fairy lights plus posts ; Helen had to crank up the CWA scone makers, cake

makers and lamington makers [ big job that ? ]; Pilly had to knock up the posters and go on the local radio and tell the District about the whole thing ; Thumper had to get the local schools, primary and state on side and get all the kids into scary clothes and Marigold said she would look after the Town Band, “ Don’t worry about them ,” she said “ I’ll root them out from under the old grandstand and get them down to the Park. “ Harry Brockle got the last job, and the most important, he had to get twenty seven big pumpkins and turn them all into scary, pumpkin faces with candles inside them The twenty seven pumpkins were going to be placed in a line along the river bank, with their scary candle faces reflecting in the still water of the river, as long as there was no wind ; but there wouldn’t be any wind because Marigold said there would be no bloody wind !!

So, off the Committee went, in all directions, cranking stuff up for the Halloween Night. Something the town had never had before. But they were all up for it – well there were quite a few against it when they first heard about it, a few locals rang the morning ABC talk back show, some old codgers at the race track said it was just Yank nonsense and the local Police Sergeant said “ Jesus , it was on a Friday night, who needs this ?? “ All the church mob thought it was a pagan festival but the only two Salvos in the town said they would be there with the tins and tambourines.

But, it was quite clear really, there was going to be a Halloween Night in Tuggles Park like it or not.

That was the way it was.

Marigold Wrenchpit thought that it would be best to start things up at about sunset and the Committee agreed.

Tuggles Park sparkled under the fairy lights. Green lawn, lavender sky, white linen trestles with plenty of CWA cakes and lamingtons, they gave the scones a miss and had baskets full of fresh sausage rolls. Pretty good really.

Most of the town were there, swirling about with children dressed as ghosts and witches except for the five Hardnup kids who were all dressed as Ned Kelly, no one cared.

The Town Band had been rooted out from under the grandstand and had , amongst other tunes, played Bridge over the River Kwai, eight times before someone under the Moreton Bay fig tree said “ Shaddup”, whilst drinking from a brown paper bag that held a long neck bottle of beer.

The twenty seven pumpkins were all made into faces and were in a line on the bank facing into the river their candlelight smiles reflecting in the still waters.

On the stage, now that the Town Band

had cleared out and were now all drinking from long necks, was a local girls band called the “ Wheat Foxes “, and man, foxes they were !!

The Police Sergeant muttered to himself, “ Jesus, I wish I was twenty years younger. “ – the Wheat Foxes were belting out their version of “ Summertime Blues “, and the park was transfixed by the thumping bass guitars, the skin tight jeans and cotton sweaters of the Wheat Foxes.

No one, not one person, noticed the pair of very round, bright pink eyes blinking out from the reeds on the other side of the river – bright, pink eyes that were looking directly at the row of evil grinning pumpkins on the river bank.

The Committee were delighted with the whole thing, Marigold thought she might get an OAM as reward for being the Chairman of the Inaugural Halloween Night in Tuggles Park and they, the Committee had allowed themselves a few slugs of brandy in their tea cups, except for Bob Plump, he just drank from a long neck anyway.

At about the time that the fairy lights were being shut off and the “ Wheat Foxes “ slinked off the stage a form of weirdness struck Tuggles Park, like none ever seen before.

The calm water rippled and a large brown leathery creature, a bit like a huge, water monitor but with pale green polka dots flashed along the bank flipping the evil candle faced pumpkins hissing into the river.

Silence gripped the mob…no one spoke or moved.

At the last pumpkin, the green polka dots glowed more fiercely, maybe it was just the light, but the creature grabbed the pumpkin, turned on its back and kind of ‘ frosby flopped ‘ back into the river with hardly a splash.

A leathery voice rustled, “ Don’t do that to me again, mate !! “ Nobody was really sure what they had seen because it was all too fast and in dim light.

Bob Plump took a big swallow from the long neck.

Marigold Wrenchpit commenced the aria from “ Carmen “ The Police Sergeant said “ Jesus. “ And two round, very pink eyes blinked out at Tuggles Park from the reeds across on the other side of the river.

All in all it was a hell of a Halloween.

A couple of weeks later Bunyip and his mate had a long talk about Halloween and stuff, much of what was said is ‘ secret men’s business ‘; but they were all good in the end, and still mates !!

What’s your phobia?

From boy Stockman to Fireman to Carer to downright good bloke John Arthur HUNTLEY, born in December 1936. John was born in Brisbane at the RBWH in 1936 to a Caucasian father (English) and an Aboriginal mother, his father’s name was John also and his mother’s name was Joyce and she was from the Valley. Both parents were one of 10 children.

In 1940, John senior took John and his brother to Sydney to live with him until he was 15. He then packed his bags and moved to Quilpy to start his droving career. He did this until he was 23.

During his time in Quilpy he did many cattle drives and became head stockman at Galway Downs station, he was 19 then. The longest drive he did was from Camooweal in Queensland to Bourke in NSW, a distance of 1800ks with 1500 head of cattle (he was 15 at the time) and it took six months, losing hardly any head and doing only 16ks a day. Every now and then they would sacrifice one for consumption.

He worked with well known men of the day, like Harry Gorringe, whose father was a well known drover from Arrabury station on the Queensland/ South Australian border. Another

Tractor nearfrom JohnArrabury adventurous drive was station to Clifton Hills along the Birdsville track with 1200 cows and 500 calves, this took eight weeks. They had an Aboriginal guide with them all the way because there were no roads and lived mainly on duck eggs because the cattle would scare the ducks out of the scrub. Johns mother and brother were at Thyroa station working for Joe Rats at Windorah, where John came across them occasionally.

John returned to Brisbane in 1959 and joined the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (now the Queensland Fire Service). He stayed in the QFS until 1983, when attending a fire in Fortitude Valley, fell through a floor and received bad

injuries to his legs and was on crutchers for 26 months until he was boarded out medically unfit due to the injuries in 1985. He was a senior fireman then.

During his time in the QFS it wasn’t always fire fighting, John was a member of their golf team and captained them to two national titles against all the other states between 1976 and 1984.

John has been married twice and with his second wife Sylvia reared seven children together but unfortunately Sylvia succumbed to alzheimer’s and cancer and he spent the next twelve and a half years as a full time carer. Sylvia died in respite in 2008. He has over 20 grandchildren and many great ones as well.

John moved to Godwin Beach with Sylvia when he retired from the QFS and has been there ever since. He tells me that he has been travelling to Bribie Island since the late 50’s and can recall using the barge before the bridge was built. He has seen many changes over the years and has been a member of the Bribie Island bowls club since 1985, strangely enough that is where I met him six years ago.

Although the trauma of losing his wife was hard it was also a relief, because he knew how much suffering she was going through. He has since got his life into a routine where he is really enjoying being on terra firma. He travels to Asia a couple of times a year and his motto is “what happens in Asia, stays in Asia”. He also goes across the ditch to say gidday to a couple of old ewes and the odd ram but he keeps the ram stories to himself.

I told John that I wouldn’t print this next bit, but his drinking mates on the “table of knowledge” at the bowls club convinced me to mention it. They reckon at times can be a bit tight and wouldn’t shout if he was bitten by a rabid dog. I’m sorry boys, I can prove you wrong. I went to Tamworth with John and another member of the “table of knowledge” five years ago and I can remember vividly him shouting me a schooner and he hasn’t asked me to recipricate yet, yet!

Like I said, I have known John for six years and he has a dry, witty sense of humour and is really enjoying being on this earth, especially living in this area.

Hang in there mate and I hope you are around for a long time to come. It’s been a pleasure to have met you.

Mine is Ssssssssnakes – I am petrified of them

For as long as I can remember I have been scared of reptiles, especially snakes.

I have only touched one in my life, or I should say, it touched me. It was at the Royal Melbourne Show in the 50s, where a python crawled off its keeper and onto my bare arms, this thing felt like it was 40ft long and it took ages for the handler to take control of it. It didn’t harm me in any way, but I just lost it, and went home.

I was on a school outing at the time and didn’t even tell the teachers that I left. Boy did I cop it the next day at school.

That was the past and it’s 55 years later and nothing has changed. I’m still the same way. I was a police officer in country Victoria for a while and whenever a snake call came in I always had something more important to attend to, like my own safety.

I cannot even bare to look at photos of the buggers and for those rubber ones you can buy, the inventor of those should be drawn and quartered.

It is ironic however that when you have a phobia, any phobia, you now and then come face to face with your problem. The following are three instances I’ve had since I moved to Woorim four years ago.

My daughter and I and three granddaughters moved into a house in Fairway Avenue, across the road from the golf course, at that time the two youngest ones were four and five. We had been in the house for three days, when on the Saturday morning I looked out the front window and saw this browny greeny snake wriggling across the front lawn. I did what any scared person would do and screamed out SNAKE! I then corralled the kids and dog up and we cowered in the kitchen for 30 minutes or so before I summonsed up enough courage to send the girls out to check if the coast was clear.

I know some people are saying right now I’m chicken, but I was thinking of the dog.

He was a bit over weight and a bit slow.

The second encounter (at the same residence) happened about two years ago.

It was just past 8 am, when my daughter yelled out SNAKE from the same front room, but this time the bloody thing was in the house. Well it doesn’t take an Einstein to work out what I did! I grabbed the dog and was halfway to the Bribie bridge along First Avenue before I realised

I wasn’t even in my car.

When I returned to the house my daughter, Danielle, said the snake was under the couch in the front room and we’ll need to call a snake catcher. One of the neighbours heard the commotion and came over with a catchers’ business card. We rang him and he declined because he didn’t do the Woorim area anymore. Panic was now starting to set in, because my daughter (who is not as scared of snakes as I am) began to worry. All my mates know of my phobia, so I called one up, Ian Sime (snake catcher extraordinaire). Who came to our aid immediately. When he arrived, still laughing, he said what sort of snake is it and how big is it. Dannii said it was a diamond python and I said it looks about 40ft long. He started laughing again. Some people have weird sense of humours.

Anyhow I was at the back gate, about 50ft from the back door, keeping guard and making sure the neighbours were safe, when about five minutes later Ian came out with this bloody monster wrapped around his left arm, a couple of coils around his waist and one around his leg. It was huge. He asked my daughter for a pillow case to put the snake in and asked me to give him a hand.

I yelled out “mate, you have two chances of that and they are both bad, it’s your problem, not mine.”

It took him about 10 minutes to unravel the thing and take it to the scrub and release it.

He then returned and we downed a couple of beers and had giggle over it. I didn’t go into the front room for a while.

The third time, same house, was in the afternoon, when I was going to check the mail box. I was about 10 feet away when I noticed something hanging down, I thought it was a bit of twine because it was a greeny color. I didn’t think much of it because I was expecting a parcel. As I got closer, it disappeared into the letterbox. Then the penny dropped, ‘’SNAKE’’, I screamed to myself, and moved quickly back inside.

About 30 minutes later, the girls arrived home from school and I said to the youngest one, Marli, to go and check the mailbox, just open it, but don’t put your hand inside. I know everyone is thinking chicken again, but she’s not scared of snakes, like her granddad is. The mailbox was empty. I have stressed to my granddaughters, Sienna and Marli, that they must do two things when they see a snake and I get them to recite it too me, and they say the first thing is to never go near them and to let them be and the second one is, don’t tell granddad.

One other incident happened to my daughter at the clothes line, she was hanging the washing on the line early one evening when she didn’t notice a brown coloured snake sunbaking on top of it until she felt something touching her hair, the thing had a couple of half-hearted strikes at her then slithered onto a nearby tree.

She called “dad,” but when I saw It, my legs turned into blocks of concrete, I was no help at all, although I had good intentions.

My friends say to me, “what if you get bitten by a snake, what would you do.? I just say, that would never happen, because if I was that close to be bitten I’d have a heart attack first. I am not proud of the fact that I am this way but I am and can’t control it. I am petrified.

This story is true in all aspects but I have made it humorous and maybe fibbed about the size of the critters, but in my eyes, they seem bigger than what they are.

Community gardens to blossom in Moreton Bay Moreton Bay Regional Council has officially endorsed community gardens in Moreton Bay, planting the seed for organisations across the region to establish veggie patches, orchards and urban farms in public parks and open spaces.

Council adopted a recommendation at its Coordination Committee Meeting on Tuesday, October 10 to allow community groups to set up communal gardens following the successful trial of The Hills District Community Garden in Bunya.

Mayor Allan Sutherland encouraged local green thumbs and community groups with an interest in gardening to get involved and said he looked forward to seeing community gardens sprout throughout Moreton Bay. “Community gardens are a great way for residents to get outdoors, meet new people and even produce some great fruits and vegetables,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“As an avid gardener myself, I know that it’s a very rewarding experience to grow and harvest your own vegetables, which can then be served for dinner that night.

“The Community Garden Guide will give you an idea of things you’ll need to consider like accessibility, safety, the size of the site, the layout and the park’s suitability to grow vegetables,” Cr Constance said.

“The guide also includes helpful advice on the long-term management of your community garden.

Upgraded bus stations for Moreton Bay Region “A simple kerb without a ramp is enough to prevent someone who is disabled from getting on a bus.

Moreton Bay Regional Council has been given a funding boost to upgrade 29 stops to help mobility-impaired people access their local buses.

“So these upgrades are really important to ensure that some of the most vulnerable members of our community can claim back some independence when it comes to their own mobility.

The funding of over $325,000 is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to ensure existing bus stops across Queensland meet Australian disability and accessibility standards.

“It’s important to ensure that the disabled and mobility-impaired members of the community has as many transport options as possible.

Police Minister and Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said the upgrades are part of a $5 million project which assists Councils to improve accessibility of bus stops for customers with a disability or restricted mobility.

“The fact that we can add another 29 accessible bus stops is great news for many members of the community.

“It just means that they now have even more options in terms of how they are able to move around in our community.”

“We want to make it easier for everyone to catch public transport and this additional funding will ensure that more Queenslanders with a disability will be able to access their local bus stops,” Mr Ryan said.

“The State funds 50% of the costs of the bus stop upgrade through the program, with councils contributing the other half.

“This financial year, improvements would be made to bus stops across 18 local government areas, with 677 stops identified so far.

Bribie Island Bus Driver Greg Eaves, Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams, Cr Brooke Savige and community members who welcome the upgrades to Bus “There are 14,000 bus stops on the TransLink network so this is absolutely a big task but a very important one.”

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said that this was great news for the disabled and mobility-impaired people in the Moreton Bay region.

“I know that having these improvements would go a long way in helping disabled

commuters on to our buses and public transport network,” Mr Williams said.

“Many members of the community just simply don’t have the choice to take the bus even if they wanted to.

“I’ve flagged these simple improvements at our local bus stops for a while now and it’s great to see they’re finally being done.

These improvements will be implemented right throughout the state and got started with Bribie Island Coaches bus driver, Greg Eaves (pictured), who brought his concerns to Mr Williams.

Improvements to bus stops are identified by local governments in consultation with TransLink, considering priority stops for upgrade.

All works carried out will comply with the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (DDA) and Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport Act 2001 (Cth) (DSAPT).

Peter Carne, the Public Trustee of Queensland, said the unclaimed money came from a range of sources, including insurance, telecommunication, electricity and utility companies.

“Often people have money owing to them that they are unaware of. This can be for a number of reasons such as moving house or instances where a company has been unable to contact you to forward you your money.

“The largest claim we’ve had was over $500,000 and the smallest claims are a few dollars.

“We have a simple process to locate and claim money, just go to Public Trustee website – www.pt.qld.gov.au – and enter your details in the unclaimed money database,” Mr Carne said.

“If you find money you think is owing to you, download the claim form and follow the steps outlined.

“At the end of the day we are pleased to provide this valuable service, as people are often surprised when they are reunited with long-forgotten funds,” Mr Carne said.

“This is just one of the services provided

by Queensland’s Public Trustee, which has been a self-funding, statutory body for just over 100 years.

Hairdressing salons are quite unique in the fact that they are like a safe place.

Their clients can come in, take a seat and vent, share, cry, laugh as they share their happiest and saddest times. Often they are seeking help or guidance.

Hairdressers with Hearts vision is for a national program where every salon in Australia will receive training in recognising signs of abuse and be provided with the necessary contacts, tools and information to assist their clients.

Schools are very basic, teachers are limited, school books are hard to get, and facilities and equipment are hard to come by.

Rotary has recognised the opportunity that modern technology offers to improve access for school children to a wide range of learning opportunities.

The countries of PNG, Solomon Islands and Nauru are all part of this geographic District of Rotary International, and many members of the Rotary Club of Bribie Island have lived and worked in these areas.

The Past District Governor is a member of Bribie Island Rotary and during his regular visits has seen the opportunity for improving children’s education.

A relatively simple and cost effective package of computer hardware and software has been developed by the

Khan Academy which enables Schools and Libraries to offer wonderful new opportunities.

The Rotary Club of Bribie Island presented each of these Presidents with a “Teacher in a Box” kit. They were given instructions in the application and operation of the program before they returned home to their various clubs.

In recent months the “Teacher in a Box” program has since been demonstrated in several schools and community libraries in PNG and has been enthusiastically received, generating strong demand for further units to be delivered.

The “Teacher in a Box” package has the capacity to bring the power of on-line learning to the off-line world through a server which turn any Wi-Fi enabled device into a browser. People in remote areas and developing countries can now access

By connecting the Teacher in a Box laptop with a projector and speakers, a teacher is able to provide a complete lesson to a classroom.

Workers and businesses in the Moreton Bay region will be pleased to hear that a Shorten Labor Government will make sure that collective bargaining agreements are not undermined by sham arrangements and no-stake agreements.

Susan Lamb, the Member for Longman said “Malcolm Turnbull has refused to act on the increasing corporate gaming of our employment laws that disadvantage vulnerable workers and create an uneven playing field for the majority of businesses who are doing the right thing.”

“At the moment, some employers are getting away with using a small cohort of employees to vote up inferior workplace agreements, which are then used to reduce the pay and conditions of other much larger and often very different types of workers.”

“We’ve seen this behaviour carried out in Queensland by labour hire companies, particularly in the clubs industry.

Management staff, for example, whose primary role is not hospitality, have been able to vote on actual hospitality workers’ pay and conditions.”

“I believe, Labor believes, that these sham collective agreements are being used to undermine already vulnerable workers’ pay and conditions in the Moreton Bay region.”

“With Labor, I’m taking a stand by

putting in place strong measures that will protect our local workforce and business community.” Ms Lamb said.

Labor will legislate to make clear that the workers who vote on an agreement must be broadly representative of the workers who may ultimately be covered by the agreement.

It will no longer be possible to specify that an agreement signed up to by workers in one place covers people employed in very different locations.

It will no longer be possible to have shortterm casual workers reach agreement on terms that bind permanent workers.

Labor will also change the law so that workers and their unions can apply to the Fair Work Commission to re-negotiate sham enterprise agreements.

This announcement builds on a long list of Labor policies to improve our industrial relations laws including preventing employers from choosing the nuclear option of terminating agreements; preventing employers forcing their workers into sham contracting arrangements; combatting phoenixing; implementing a national labour hire licensing scheme; and defining “casual work”.

Turnbull and his Liberals have not taken any action that improves the bargaining position of employees relative to employers.

In fact, they are so out of touch, they have actively encouraged employers to engage in tactics to game the fair work laws and cut workers’ wages and conditions.

“Workers in Longman deserve a fair go; they deserve a government that understands that the challenges in Australia’s labour market and workplaces are real and places people’s wellbeing above corporate profits.” Ms Lamb concluded.

Someone had to ask the question ; and it was Cranky Lizard. “ Does the Australian Parliament still need a Senate, considering the manner in which The Senate has been compromised by the preference gaming formula ? “ In the current circumstances The Senate, lets the elected Australian Government in the House of Representatives, govern.

That was never the purpose of The Senate –never the reason The Senate was created in the Constitution. The Senate was created as a House of Review to ensure that the smaller States had balance with the elected representatives of the larger states, in the House of Representatives, at the time of the Federation in 1901.

New South Wales for example would have many more elected representatives than say Tasmania or South Australia in the House of Representatives and consequently balance was restored to the legislative process by creating a House of Review [ The Senate ] to ensure the welfare of the less populous states.

Senators were elected to oversee the interests of the State from which they were elected ; not any particular political party from that State.

The word ‘ Senator ‘ has Latin roots which refer to ‘ wise and senior ‘ persons whose role was to guide, direct and assist the legislative process in a democratically elected parliament.

The current Australian Senate has some old persons, a few wise persons but unhappily, for the Commonwealth, much of the Senate comprises identity politicians obsessed with their own images and political agendas, or persons elected by a cascading preference effect which has nothing to do with popular will expressed at the ballot box but largely the result of cynical preference sharing which was never the intention of the Australians who drafted and subsequently wrote the

Any reader of this column will know that the Senate is obstructive, perverse and in most cases, determined to frustrate the elected Government’s agenda simply because it can or because it holds personal political agendas more important than the strategic interests of the Commonwealth.

This situation applies to both major political parties in Australia ; both of them have cynically used the Senate to frustrate a democratically elected Government.

Should that be the way it is ?

No. Will it change in the short term future ?

He, Arthur Herman Bestmann, was born at “Best Park”, Toorbul Point, on 19 February 1887. As we have observed, there is some understanding, within major political parties that Senate Reform is needed ; hence the change to the Senate ballot paper in the last Federal Election, and, even though there was some success in sorting the delusionary mob of Senate ‘ wanna bees ‘, the end result was still unworkable in legislative terms, and we witness an elected Government making impractical and expensive compromises [ such as postal plebiscites ] due to party political agendas and identity politics.

Cranky Lizard contends, that a Prime Minister or the Leader of the Opposition, regardless of the political leaning, if these leaders take a specific policy to the people at a Federal General Election and win that election, then they have an absolute right to claim a mandate for that policy to be implemented; regardless of the vagaries of the Senate. We all know that Prime Ministers become frustrated and angry with Senate obstructionism – witness Paul Keating referring to the Senate as ‘ unrepresentative swill ‘ – the fact of the

matter is that the nation has travelled some long and difficult roads since the Constitution was written in 1901 ; along those roads the integrity and moral purpose of the Senate has been lost.

Shrug our shoulders and walk away from it ?

Definitely NO !!

Is it therefore, time to shut the Senate down ?

This would require a Constitutional Referendum and would be a titanic struggle to over- come all the vested interests locked up in the Senate. But, on financial terms alone it would make perfect sense.

The argument that removing the Senate would diminish good Government in the nation will not fly, because we don’t have good Government now !! We have a shambolic, dealing making, compromising, self- aggrandising collection of elected personalities, many of whom are out of their intellectual depth and highly overpaid according to their abilities and contribution to the nation’s welfare.

Many democratic Governments exist without an Upper House of Review or Senate and they function well ; some better than others but that relates to other factors rather than the existence of a House of Review.

Sure…there are examples of Australian Governments’ having their own majority

in the Senate ; ‘ Work Choices ‘ was a good example of that and it cost John Howard his Prime Ministership and his Government. So the self- regulating process of the electorate worked well in that case. In broad terms if a Government steps outside of what is seen as normal and expected legislation and delivers legislation which is manifestly unfair, the electorate boots it out on its bum !!

Cranky Lizard suggests, along with some other commentators, that if matters of financial and taxation legislation, which have been put before the electorate at a Federal election and have won the day; then an electorate mandate clearly exists and refusal to pass the legislation by an intransigent Senate should result in a Joint Sitting of Parliament, without having to go to a Double Dissolution Election.

For example, say mandated legislation is refused twice by the Senate in one sitting ; then the third vote on that legislation would be a Joint Sitting of Both Houses.

If the legislation fails that test then it deserves to sink and it would.

Back to the original question… ‘ Does Australia need a Senate in its Federal Parliament ? ‘ et al.

Financially, No !

The National accounts would gain hundreds of millions of dollars. Dollars which could be spent on behalf of the Commonwealth as determined by the elected Government.

Politically and practically, No !

But it would be bloody hard to get rid of it now.

Cranky Lizard suggests that the matter of reform should be vigorously pursued, in particular the matter of Joint Sittings without Double Dissolution Elections.

Cranky Lizard also suggests that the above comments should be applied to those States of Australia that maintain an Upper House as well ; these are places where, party hacks are sent to perish, mates are flicked favours, union bosses and employers from the big end of town lunch out for years and not much of intellectual or political value is ever gained by the electorate.

Cranky Lizard can hear the howls of outrage, can see the red diffused faces with organ stop eyes bulging in anger… look in the mirror folks, what do you see ?

Anything worthwhile ?

This he did and soon turned the front bedroom of his weekender into a shop to meet the demand of campers, fishermen, and the cannery workers.. Ian, Alfred’s son said, ‘The business grew and Dad had to stay all week at Bribie, while Mum looked after the Toowong shop and family home, facilitating the education of we children.” In 1918, Alf and Artie went into partnership to run the shop in the front room of Alfred’s weekender.

Annual Garden Expo at

Beachmere Community Bank Moving Ahead

Browns Mitre 10 this month was a hit with locals.

There were plenty of questions and lots of great helpful tips and ideas across all the subjects on the day. Mr Burdette socialized with customers and gave them some great advice on their own gardens throughout the day.

Also present were Rocky Point Mulching and Stihl Power garden tools doing demonstrations in the carpark where locals could come and test drive power tools.

This year despite the rain, it didn’t dampen the 4th Annual Garden Expo at Browns Mitre 10 with celebrity gardener Noel Burdette! Local avid gardeners now look forward to this event every year.

The popular Noel Burdette and Browns Mitre 10 Horticulturist Jill Ross gave 4 talks between them this year from 9.30am till 1.00pm on October 14.

The Expo also showed how to control pests and disease, picking great pollinatiors and natural predators, perfect plants for indoors and small places and how lawns can be a headache.

There were plenty of plant and garden product specials on the day with the Mitre 10 spring garden catalogue. Mr Burdette always lures a crowd and this day was no exception.

only full banking services, but funds for community projects.

Successful Community Banks have been established across Australia, and Beachmere will join Cooroy, Woombye and Nanango in providing local banking facilities, employment and community funding for locals in their own community.

Bribie Toastmasters Winning at 2017 Area Conference

The Table Topics contest requires a 3 minute speech from the competitors who are given no prior knowledge of the subject they must speak about until they are standing before the judges and audience. These nerve wracking, on your toes, speeches are always fun and lively and when the contestants were individually given the subject “Come rain, hail or shine” they all surprised and entertained with their responses. First place was Alison Lamb (Caboolture) second Vicki Higgins (Kilcoy) and Rosine Evans from Bribie Toastmasters took the third place certificate.

Table Topics 3rd Rosine Evans, 1st Alison Lamb & 2nd Vicki Higgins were represented strongly in all four of the contests held.

Humorous Contest Winner Cathy McGillivray, 2nd Burt Linford & 3rd Alison Lamb When the four Toastmasters clubs from Bribie Island, Sandstone Point, Caboolture and Kilcoy gathered at the Sandstone Point Sports Complex on Sunday the 24th of September to meet, greet and compete at the Area 3 Conference, all those attending knew it would be an entertaining and informative day.

To be eligible to compete at the Area competitions contestants had to have already placed first or second at their club speech contests. Bribie Toastmasters

The International Speech contest was first up on Sunday morning. Having seven competitors in the competition the subjects were interesting, varied and certainly caught the audience and judges attention right from the first word of the first speech. From considering the questions you ask and how you listen to the answers, through to the impact one Australian woman had the ability of British women to vote, the International speeches were a highlight of the contests.

Cathy McGillivray from Bribie Toastmasters won the International contest with her speech titled “Your Choices, your future” which asked everyone to consider how their everyday choices will impact on their future.

Second place certificate went to

The Humorous Contest speeches are, of course written to amuse and entertain, and the audience was definitely entertained with seven speakers sharing stories that kept everyone laughing throughout.

Third place Alison Lamb (Caboolture) shared her night of dressing up as Kung Fu Panda and being mobbed by tourists with cameras, Burt Linford from Bribie Toastmasters came second by regaling everyone with his failed attempts at rat catching when he was newly married and when Bribie Toastmaster Cathy McGillivray took the judges and audience on her journey of learning to ride a motorbike and her face first dive into bushes at McDonalds with her speech titled “The Best Motivation Ever” she was awarded first prize.

When the Evaluation contest was held everyone enjoyed the Test Speakers vision on water saving in Queensland and then each contestant evaluated this speech.

The evaluation process is a large part of Toastmasters and helps every speaker

learn ways to improve their public speaking in a supportive and helpful manner. The Evaluations that were given by the contestants all contained supportive points for improvement and praise for the Test speaker. First place was won by Dell Parminter (Kilcoy) second was Gary Kuss (Island Communicators) and third place was Alison Lamb (Caboolture) As the Area 3 International Contest and Humorous Contest winner Cathy McGillivray will now go on to represent Bribie Toastmasters and the Area 3 region at the District Conference which is to be held in March 2018 in Ipswich.

Work underway at Bribie Island State High School Work is getting underway on the Palaszczuk Government’s $30,000 project to refurbish Blocks C and T at Bribie Island State High School.

Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams said this project is part of our record $580.6 million capital works program to improve our state schools.

“Works will include installation of teaching wall, cabinetry, pin boards and upgrade of fans.”

INSTAGRAM - THE NEW FACEBOOK If you haven’t already, you need to check out Instagram. I know what you’re thinking – not another social media app! But the reality is, by ignoring this popular app, you may risk being left behind in the dark ages. Okay, I may be exaggerating, but as I’ve recently learned from my students, Instagram is the new Facebook. I might not be as young as the students I teach, but I do like to consider myself as hip, and down with the lingo (or apps, as the case may be). However, I was taught a hard lesson several weeks ago when, talking about Facebook, students told me Facebook was for OLD people.

You can imagine how appalled I was at being called that word we all fear – OLD. Determined to regain the ‘young’ and ‘hip’ title I wear so proudly, I went home and opened the Instagram app I’d downloaded more than four years earlier (but had only accessed several times), with the sole purpose of discovering what all the hype was about.

I’m not going to lie, I have a personality type that detests change, so I could feel my whole being vehemently fighting my brain, which was trying to tell my finger to press on the beautifully coloured (pink, purple and orange) camera shutter icon. My brain persisted, and as my finger grazed the screen of my iPhone, my stubborn side forced my eyes shut - still fighting against the change I knew this moment COULD bring. I glanced at my phone through slitted eyes, and was dazzled with a photo of my best friend’s one-year-old twins. I was surprised, because I check her Facebook daily for updates on my ‘nephews’ and ‘nieces’, and had not seen that photo on Facebook.

In that moment (to my absolute horror), I realised that if SHE had found her way to Instagram, the only logical explanation was that I had indeed, become outdated. Now for anyone who knows me, know that one of the things I hate more than change is the fear of appearing unknowledgeable, and out of touch with the latest and greatest. In fact, I have spent my life making fun of my Mum and Dad as they struggled to use, and understand technology. Not only did I tease, guffaw, and retell these embarrassing stories – I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, and the idea that I had become the very thing I enjoyed poking fun at, mortified me.

Determined to regain my impressive ‘cool’ status, I spent the following few days poring through post after post, and in my persistence, discovered that the kids were right (don’t tell them I said that): Instagram IS the new Facebook.

The young boy just starting his first casual job for the school holidays with a local undertaker. During the first morning they get a job to go and pick up a body of a man from a house a few miles away.

Upon arrival at the house the undertaker reads out the instructions to the boy.

They said: “keys are under mat on the front porch and the body is in the front bedroom on the right.” They grab the keys and enter the house and proceed to the bedroom where they find a naked male on top of the bed and looked about 45 years old, but they immediately saw a problem – the body had an erection that big, even Sally Pearson couldn’t hurdle it.

The young boy said to the undertaker, “he won’t fit into the coffin like that, what do we do now?” The undertaker replied, “no problems, go back to the vehicle and grab the rubber mallet behind the drivers’ seat and bring it back here?”

The boy comes back with the mallet and says; “what do we do with this.” The undertaker said “I want you to wind up and hit that thing as hard as you can?”

The boy winds up and goes WHACK, right on the tip of the man’s penis. Instantly the supposed body sits straight up and screams “wholly snappin duck shit, what are you two doing.”

The young boy panics and yells to the undertaker, “what do we do now?”

The undertaker yells back, “run like hell, we are in the wrong house.”

The Faces of Our Future As a teacher, I spend a good amount of time with our youth. Students aged 1218 enter my classroom with a varying degree of ability, a multitude of learning types, and each possessing their own unique, individual personality. Are they perfect? No. But are adults perfect? One of my biggest disappointments (and I can assure you, I have many) with our media, is its insistence on demonising teens.

teenagers attend school – they spend their time in classes, socialising with friends at lunch, and attending extra-curricular activities after school. Not roaming the streets for six hours, vandalising public and private property. Most teenagers succeed in their school work – they complete assignments, study for exams, and show off their practical skills in hands on exams. In fact, in 2016, Bribie Island State High School, almost achieved the elusive 100% rate of grade 12s achieving a QCE. Unfortunately, because of these negative representations in the media, our teenagers have been labelled unfairly, and are often treated accordingly. But these representations are wrong, and they need to be challenged. It’s not fair that we demonise an entire group of people based on the actions of the few.

I often hear people expressing their concern for the future at the hands of our teens, but if you look back through time, to the conception of the teenager (which is only a recent concept), they have Let me ask you this: when you open always been presented as rebels. Last month’s articles we touched based on the importance of adding fully composted materials to your soil and the importance of maintaining luxury levels of soil moisture which can assist in the microbial digestion and assimilation of organic matter from the beneficial bacteria, fungi and earth worms, which subsequently release nutrients which become plant available in the biosphere of the plant root zone.

There can be obvious difficulties encountered while trying to keep the soil moisture levels in abundance when we are experiencing drought like conditions and its these times of environmental extremes that we may notice how we have taken for granted the luxury of life giving resources like irrigation, bore and tank water reserves until they are also impacted due to drought or lack of rainfall or enforced council restrictions and the choice suddenly becomes human hydration or lawn and garden irrigation.

Great news though that we finally received a good drop of rainfall in October, and now is a perfect time to get that mulch down before the moisture completely percolates away and by adding sugar cane or Lucerne mulch on the soil surface you will build up your soil organics and feed the microflora over time. The biggest problem I have noticed when renovating old tired gardens on Bribie Island, is the amount of plastic sheeting and weed matting I come across. This old school of thinking does more harm than good for the soil and gardens in general and especially for sandy soils that do not retain moisture at all. The weed matt supposedly allows the moisture through the fine woven mesh eventually but if your soil is hydrophobic, “does not accept water easily” then how can the irrigation penetrate the soil surface? Never mind the weed matt. When I do remove the weed matt or plastic sheeting I find that the soil is parched underneath and seemingly devoid of any life and lack of moisture means lack of beneficial microbial life. Hydrophobic soils can accept moisture again if they are kept mulched, but you can use soil wetting agents to assist also.

The main reason these matts were put down was to obviously stop weeds coming through but there is a more sustainable way if you prefer, by preparing the garden beds by covering the soil with a thin layer of newspaper, then wet the lot, cut the hole for the plants and lay a nice feeder mulch like sugarcane or Lucerne on top, You can add liquid diluted fish and seaweed to your soil, plants and mulch and cover again with a thicker open course mulch like hoop pine, that holds the lot together but allows moisture to penetrate through. You will be feeding the soil, which in turn feeds the plants and fortifying the soil to withstand those harsh, hot and dry weather patterns that mother nature throws on us from season to season. And if you have mulched already best to keep an eye on it and pull it away from the plants trunks to prevent diseases like stem rots due to all the rain we have just received.

LANDSCAPING PLANT OF THE MONTH

Petrea volubilis or Tropical Wisteria Sandpaper Vine.

Petrea volubilis can be relatively inconspicuous and look rather ordinary with its pale green leaves twinning away up a tree or trellis until it flowers, then what a show stopper indeed, with spectacular masses of pendulous racemes about 30 cm long hanging like wisteria blooms, hence the common name, Tropical Wisteria. The pendulous raceme consists of between 15 and 30 purple and lilac coloured star shaped calyces, with a central corolla, which is the flower, consisting of another five purple petals with a velvety texture and the top petal adorning a splash of white, for attracting the pollinators.

It’s the star shaped calyces that adorn the bloom long after the corollas have detached and dropped which remain on the vine providing a stunning display. The main flowering season is early spring but they can also put on another flush again in summer.

The vine itself is an exotic evergreen, woody, twinning creeper. The leaves have a rough sandpaper feel and texture which is why it’s also called the sandpaper vine. P. volubilis, can grow to 10 metres tall, but needs a host for support, they can be cut back hard after flowering to keep them in check. They grow in full sun to part shade and do well here on the coastal fringe but prefer protection from harsh strong winds.

GARDENING FOR Mick ByO’Brien HEALING AND HARMONY I feel empowered to write this article today with the realisation lately that not only am I fortunate to be working in a variety of different gardens assisting my clients needs with garden renovations and maintenance activities on Bribie Island and Surrounding districts, it’s also the respect and trust they instil in me as they relax knowing, that the health and vitality of their plants are in excellent hands indeed. It’s this trust coupled with the fact that my passion and spirit is right out there in the forefront of my ongoing business concern, which resonates with my soul. I also naturally feel compelled to officially take this opportunity to thank Belinda Ferguson, the owner and editor of this fine local community newspaper, The Island and Surrounds, for publishing my regular articles with my views on Sustainable gardening and my Soils ain’t Soils feature, in Micks Patch, for the last 15 months.

With the gratitude and acknowledgement aimed to all I interact with also, I would like to mention some synchronicity events in my own life and with people I have crossed paths with during my horticultural activities from time to time. Fortunately for me, working amongst gardens, plants and animals daily, offers the opportunity to ground myself out often and tune in when possible. It’s this tuning in, that adds a spiritual dimension, one that surprisingly pops up in the most unusual ways when you are doing what you love. Whether it be a butterfly landing on your nose or a dragonfly hovering at head height following you around in the garden or a green tree frog looking you straight in the eye as you inspect a plant, “its home”. These encounters give me a healthy respect for our environment and Its these encounters that penetrate through the

boundaries of my day to day existence and affords the chance to resonate with the real me, the one that is not just running around with a monkey mind, got to pay this, do this, fix this etc, but gives me a moment of clarity, a breath of fresh air and a sense of realising all things are seemingly connected, plants, animals, humans and mother earth almost if we are all interwoven like a giant piece of fabric.

Also, I personally have noticed from my dealings with people that true healing can be initiated and achieved in the most unlikely places, especially in the garden. I have worked in some situations where the client is still grieving from personal loss of a loved one and as I clear out their old gardens and reinvigorate them, I have noticed firsthand their reaction as if their own mind has been cleared, if only for a moment, from sadness and sorrow. The warmth of the sun on their skin and the gentle breeze on their face gives a new sense of appreciation. And the look on their face when an old prized plant suddenly flowers which was once planted by their dear departed loved one, is priceless.

Its moments like these that spur me on my ever so simple humble path to write and inform all I meet with the benefits of sustainable and therapeutic gardening indeed. Having a garden full of birds, insects, lizards and frogs among flourishing plants in a residential area is priceless treasure in my opinion. So, on that note, here’s hoping you have a garden teaming with life now, with the arrival of our muchneeded rainfall recently. And may your frog also look you in the eye! The Happy Horticulturist.

Donnybrook Bait and Tackle shop owners have taken back management OWNERS Sue and Greg have taken back their Bait and Tackle shop at Donnybrook 3 weeks ago, Greg said “we are happy to be back after 2 years away from the shop and have made some huge changes”.

The opening hours are now from Monday to Saturday 6am till 7pm and on Sunday 6am till 6pm. The shop has had a complete overhaul, Donnybrook is a popular place for novel fishermen and they now supply fresh and frozen bait and live blood

worms (when available). The shop also supplies unleaded and diesel fuel, ice, gas, tackle and wood for the campers at Mission Point. They now have a lovely sit down area and you can relax and enjoy an expresso coffee and cake. Method Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2.

Put the ribs in a roasting tin in a single layer and just cover with water. Cover with foil and cook for 1 and a half hrs.

Drain well. If you are not finishing these straight away, cover and chill until ready to cook.

Meanwhile, fry the onion in the oil in a pan until soft. Add the garlic, smoked paprika and chilli powder and fry for 1 min. Add the passata, purée, vinegar and sugar and bring everything to a simmer.

Cook for 10 mins. If you are not using this sauce straight away, cool and chill.

Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

Brush the ribs all over with the sauce

Business be returning. Quiet often the decline is justified by seasonal or weather events and sometimes an owner doesn’t seem to have any answers – they just keep moving ahead in the hope that things may just pick up.

Here are a few tips for those out there who may be struggling to generate more sales and retain customers or who may not understand why their business environment has possibly changed.

Tip 1 Stop and Reflect – Make sure that you as an owner and leader understand your purpose and objectives for being in business – reset your focus – check your energy levels – take time out on your favourite beach or country location to reflect. Make sure you take a scrapbook and pen when you are reflecting.

Make My Day with a Big Smile “All I want is to be greeted with a big smile, provided with timely service and a consistent quality product. The price does not determine my decision to make a purchase.”

How many times do you walk into a club, cafe or retail space and walk out shaking your head wondering just how some of the businesses keep their doors open with such questionable customer service. If you shake your head more than once at the same business, you can pretty much guarantee that business will not exist into the future. It may not occur today or next month, but it will occur because human beings inherently do not tolerate a lack of acknowledgement or the unwillingness to genuinely engage with another person – especially in a customer service environment.

Apart from stocking a good consistent product, we know that the only way to sustain long-term business is to build relationships and engage with everyone that enters your environment. I was probably fortunate because when I worked for the Hilton Hotel in the 1990’s, we were uncompromising on the culture of customer engagement. It was simple really - the hotel was a large business made up of many small parts and the hotel needed every customer to feel happy and spend a set amount of money. The hotel needed every customer to advocate the Hilton on the Park Brand and every week they would come back in droves.

Just like today, back then money was not the key determinate of the decision to purchase, if I was, the punters would not have paid $8.5 for a crown lager pulled out of an ‘iced-up’ garbage bin. It was all about the consistent quality of product and customer engagement - everyone was made to feel welcome and we trained the teams to add-value to every individual experience. Internal training, development and the focus on productivity, profit and recruitment was part of the accepted culture.

Let’s not get too carried away with big hotels with global resources. There is a simple ‘People Value’ that should sit within every small and large business. It should read, ‘We recruit staff with energy, passion and purpose who are innovative, creative and skilled and share our values – we never compromise on our value.’

There is nothing more disheartening then employing and training staff only to find out 60 days later that they do not share your core values. Whilst there are many businesses providing outstanding interaction with customers, there are also equally as many business operators struggling to understand why their revenue is declining or why people don’t seem to

Tip 4 Independent Feedback – consider engaging an independent third-party to undertake a Health Check on your business (Avoid engaging any friend or colleague). This provides independent, honest, accurate and timely feedback.

You can even engage this person to communicate the feedback on your behalf to your team at a special development meeting. This will enforce the independence and allow for a solution to be implemented faster.

It’s never too late to ask for help or reset the clock and take a fresh look at your purpose, objectives and business promotional plan – it will only lead to positive and successful outcome.

2017 Queensland Open Golf Tournament

The Electricity Rebate for Queensland Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card and Department of Veterans Affairs (Gold Card) was increased by almost $20 to $340.85 assistance in 2017-18.

“My Government has extended the eligibility for the rebate to low-income households and Commonwealth Health Care Card holders,” Mr Williams said.

“By keeping our electricity generation, transmission and distribution assets in public ownership, we have been able put downward pressure on electricity prices.

Increases have been limited to an average of just 1.9% per year compared to 43% over the term of the LNP Government.”

Other rebates and concessions available from the Palaszczuk Government include: 1. Vehicle and Boat Registration Concessions reduces the cost of vehicle and boat registration fees for seniors and pensioners.

Beachmere Community Lawn Bowls Club has been given a new lease of life with the election of its new chairman and committee at their recent Annual General Meeting.

Chairman Bob Prosser and his new committee have elected to take the club in a new direction as a community club.

“Our goal is to increase membership by encouraging social bowls. With our new fee structure we can offer great bowls and club facilities for a very reasonable annual fee,” Mr Prosser said.

“More games, tournaments and mixed comps will hopefully encourage couples and families to join and play.

Wallabies Break Drought There is nothing better than to play the All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. It provides a great backdrop, feeds the punters and delivers dollars to hopeful corporate investors. It’s even more exciting when the home side can finally celebrate a win with family and supporters. I concede that in previous commentary, I have questioned the focus and intent of specific Wallabies players including past on-field captions, the current caption and the ‘on-camera display’ of a frustrate tantrum-throwing wallabies coach. Since my previous commentary some months ago, the Wallabies have played the All Blacks in Dunedin (NZ) and lost a nail-biter due to poor execution at the restart and have played the return test match at Suncorp Stadium (Brisbane 21st October) and finally defeated the beatable All Blacks.

Given the outcome of the test match in Dunedin, the most recent 23-18 defeat of the All Blacks was not surprising. The All Blacks usually play and very accurate and intensive game, however when you play the All Blacks at their game of pushing defensive lines, achieving turnovers and delivering 80 minutes of intensive physical rugby, the All Blacks crack. This was most evident as the final siren sounded with the All Blacks in control and just 30 meters from the Wallabies try line. One big hit from the wallabies, the ball was spilled and the game was over. It was not only me who questioned the leadership and mental toughness of the Wallabies. Christy Doran, Fox Sports News reported that former World Cup Winning Wallabies Captain, Nick Farr-Jones compared past Wallaby success and questioned the mental toughness of the current team at a Rugby Lunch in Brisbane on Friday 20th October. Despite the Bledisloe Cup being already lost 2-0 this was far from a dead rubber with the intensity from both sides. It’s a signpost of bigger things to come after ending a seven-Test losing run to the men in black. Council’s aerial treatment program will target more than 1,500 hectares of saltmarsh areas across the region, the treatment program was on October 7 and 8 following recent rainfall.

Council treated areas on Saturday 7th of October including Burpengary East, Beachmere, Ningi, Elimbah and Toorbul.

Sunday the 8th of October, the aerial treatment program covered areas including Dohles Rocks, Griffin and Lawnton.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Lifestyle and Amenity Spokesperson Councillor Matt Constance said the treatments

coincide with year-round on-ground treatments across council’s parks, recreations and reserves.

Cr Constance said with the aerial program beginning this weekend, it was a great reminder for residents to begin taking preventative measures around the home to deter mozzies.

“The vast majority of mozzies breed in backyards, where our helicopters can’t get to, and that’s why residents are encouraged to take five minutes and empty any containers that may carry stagnant water, make sure their pool remains chlorinated and regularly apply mosquito repellent,” Cr Constance said.

“Residents can also opt for outdoor barrier treatments available at hardware stores to treat for adult mosquitoes.”

November fishing report The weather in the past few weeks has been terrible for all fishing conditions however we still had a few experienced anglers out and about. There have been plenty of Whiting being caught on Surfside 1st,2nd,3rd lagoon and the campsites you can also get of good feed at Red Beach, Avon Wrecks and Bongaree with the best bait being Live Blood Worms.

If you head to Normans Gutter some big bream being caught ranging from 38-42cms also seeing them at Banksia Canals, Avon Wrecks, Turners Camp and Bellara and once again Live Blood worms and prawns the best bait. We have been seeing a lot of flathead in Ningi Creek, Poverty Creek, Turners Camp, Bellara and Sandstone Point they are biting well on Squid. Snapper are being caught at the Ripples and Sandstone Point grab some cuttlefish to catch a feed of snapper.

as along banks of Bellara and Bongaree.

We are also seeing a few Mackerel being caught on the surfside and at the Bird Cage. The Christmas holidays will be upon us before we realise so make sure you have booked your campsites you don’t want any disappointment when your favourite spot is booked.

TIP - When boiling mud crabs use a gas burner outside to cook crabs or risk stinking out the house...

Estuaries are the best places to get mud crabs, along with mangrove bays with good tidal flow. Mud or sand bottoms will produce crabs so don’t be too concerned with what the bottom looks like, but get the right tide.

The smaller rivers can hold more concentrated populations and it can be easier to locate where the crabs are. The bigger rivers are much longer with greater tidal flow, so it can be much harder to pinpoint where they are at any given time and sometimes it takes a series of trips over a few weeks to determine where they are holding. Water temperature is also very important. Crabs will be more active in water over 25C. This sees water temperature of 28-30C on hot days.

Usually once detangled from the net I throw them immediately into my livewell with a few frozen milk bottles, the cold water slows them down and makes them easier to handle. When at home I place them into a bucket in the fridge or freezer for a few hours to euthanise them. Fresh mud crab does freeze ok, so you can freeze them for a few weeks whole or clean them green and freeze the pieces for later. For whole frozen crab just thaw out in some water in the sink or a bucket for a few hours, then cook.

With any crabbing pots/dillies your name needs to be clearly identified along with your residential address and phone number. Some states require extra items like a tag on the pot or a identification on the float, such as “CT” for crab trap. It surprises me that amateurs have to do this as the commercial’s floats are tiny and have no markings.

The pots are good for deeper holes or if you want to leave them overnight. They require less checking as the nets are thicker and being heavier are less prone to floating away. I always like to zip-tie my pots shut to ensure that no tampering takes place as crab poaching does happen.
