An Apology to the Queensland State Parliament and the Member for Pumicestone, Mr Rick Williams, MLA. In the last edition of this newspaper, an article inadvertently portrayed Mrs Simone Wilson, the endorsed Liberal National Party of Queensland candidate for the State seat of Pumicestone, as the Member for Pumicestone.

This was a genuine mistake on the part of the Editor of this newspaper, and had nothing to do with Mrs Simone Wilson, the endorsed Liberal National Party candidate.

The newspaper issues an unconditional apology to the current sitting Member for Pumicestone, Mr Rick Williams, MLA and to the Queensland Parliament and also to Mrs Simone Wilson : no disrespect to the Queensland Parliament or Mr Williams or Mrs Wilson was ever intended.

When I first came to the Island In 2002, I went for a sticky beak in behind Armitage Street, only to see too my horror the guts being ripped out of the centre of the Island. Chain dragging, we call it in the Territory, using a couple of D10 dozers or similar, with a dirty big chain between them, and off they go, ripping the trees out by the roots and destroying the plant life for the animals.

I was told the Island had to only accommodate 18% for people. Never anymore. 82% for the Parks and Wildlife.

Get that bit? “wildlife” One of the reasons I came to this amazing Island.

So, what the!!!!, I went and saw the local state MP at the time and got the explanation.

Oh really!! I thought after she explained that it was the “Commercial Parks and Wildlife Department” that was responsible, so it’s still Parks and Wildlife and was leased out, she advised there was nothing she could do about it…. I still wonder by whom and to whom it was leased to?????

What genius thought pine trees will grow well in sand????? What clown thought it wouldn’t extinguish half our wild life and half our bird life????? No wild life likes pine trees that I know of, except for the commercial division of Parks and Wildlife. Get it “Wildlife” Shame on that Government Department.

Now my idea is simple, firstly don’t let

idiots make any more rules to wreck our Island.

Secondly, it’s no wonder the dingoes and giant Kangaroos that laid all over the golf course have gone?

Thirdly, lets chain drag the pine trees, see how they like it!!!! Mother nature with a bit of help, will grow our precious, unique, wonderful, eucalyptus trees back so we can give the poor Koalas from the mainland, a happy place to seek refuge from their catastrophic slaughter due to the massive mainland developments.

And fourthly guess what? The Island will be 82% real Parks and Wildlife, “Wildlife” the birds and bees will all come back.

So, what do you reckon, good idea? Why don’t we all write a simple yes or no to the Editor. Let’s vote for commonsense instead of this disgusting example of selfish greed from our State Government.

And help our little Koala friends come back to this beautiful Island.

Cheers Mark Roberts Dear A.Voter, Your letter to the editor in last issues regarding the “Drive to and from Our Beautiful Island is being ruined” simply highlights what local residents have been telling me as I door knock and meet with them as part of my campaign to win Pumicestone back for the people.

The current government is not listening and has no plans for our community.

Everything they have done during the past 2 .5 years has come about with little to no consultation with the people of our area. Let me make one thing very clear WE MATTER AND WE DESERVE A SAY AND HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE LISTENED TOO. As a past resident of Bribie Pines Estate at Ningi (13 years) I am still scratching my head as to why lights were put in at the intersection of Aylward Road Ningi, prior to other more dangerous intersection once again being over looked such as Old Toorbul Point Road. While residents have commented, it is easier for them now to access Bribie Island Road from Alyward Road there was really no issues just a little bit of patience needed. The accidents that had occurred at this intersection in our time of living there were largely due to people exiting the fruit shop the wrong way and not giving way when undertaking a U-turn.

I have spoken to owners who live along Peel Road who had not even been made aware that lights were being installed until the day work commenced. When one of the residents purchased their home last year the purposed road works failed to even appear in legal searches.

Now their whole lives have been turn upside down due to the increasing noise levels which disturbs their sleep and ability to live life like they once did. We have written to the Minister Bailey on 10 July 2017 the about their situation and are still waiting for a response from the government regarding their matter. Clearly this do-nothing Labor government don’t care about our community as they continue to ignore us.

Let’s face it we have been treated as the poor cousins for far too long and it is time for a change. I am listening to the

people within my whole community. I am committed to fighting for a 4-lane dual carriage way from Aerodrome Road Caboolture to the Bribie Bridge and a duplication of the bridge. Let’s not forget, it was only through the hard work our past LNP Member Lisa France who secured the land either side of the Bribie Bridge for the future works of a new bridge not the current member who tries to make out it was him.

Kateoli Horse Park – Open for Business In Part 1 of the Kateoli Horse Park Close Encounters Story, we met the passionate entrepreneur Mark Roberts who created the vision for the new Kateoli Horse Park at Ningi, Queensland.

Today we meet the man on the ground at Kateoli Horse Park, the Quint Essential Aussie Horseman, Naish Hogan to talk everything horse and business.

When you enter the 100-acre Kateoli Horse Park, you drive down a magnificent

tall pine forest entrance that stretches far enough to relax the soul. As I turned right and drove into Kateoli Horse Park, I could see Naish Hogan in one of the paddocks with his partner erecting a new fence. I honked the horn and gave them a wave and then drove into the carpark.

As I waited for Naish to head back and join me, I sat on an old wooden bench

Naish said, “We are keen to continue with training champion horses and riders and very keen to provide a unique and safe environment for owners to have their horses agisted at Kaleoti Horse Park and managed by our team,” he said, “We intend to provide a one-stop-shop for all and are indebted to the experience

overlooking the beautiful Ningi Creek – it is the most picturesque site you can ever imagine, peaceful and full of positive energy. At that very moment, I honestly felt that I could stay here all day just dreaming about how the Wallabies may potentially beat the All Blacks in 2050. After I shook off that random thought, I started to have a look around and could see that the Horse Park coming together. There were a few horse owners riding their horses in one of the paddocks and another tending to her horse. Nested along the bank of Ningi Creek are three historic houses that I was previously told will be restored to accommodate for visitors and perhaps a bed and breakfast cottage as well as a home and administration office for Naish and his partner. The balcony on the first house appears to be as wide as the house and has views across the water through the tall gumtrees – breathtaking. The only thing missing was a campfire, billy tea and damper which I have no doubt would appear if requested.

Finally the man himself arrives greeting me with a warm respectful handshake and a positive smile. You know

immediately that Naish Hogan is the ‘real deal’- a centred man that oozes humble confidence. As Naish Hogan took me for a guided tour of Kateoli Horse Park, I began to get a clear picture of just how everything is going to come together – there are 32 agistment paddocks, a dedicated specialist horse stable, an arena location, a future Equine Veterinarian Building with the associated equine assessment and aquatic therapy zones, three historic accommodation houses for renovation and loads of parking. Naish said, “We are aiming to create a professional integrated Horse Park Business and Community HUB at Kateoli Horse Park for horse agistment, training, equine management and a place for our local community to come down on weekends or weekdays and learn to ride horses or simply to enjoy a picnic amongst the beautiful gums-trees overlooking the water and have a look at how a Horse Park actually works,” Naish said, “ There are a lot of guys and ladies out there who would love to get back on a horse but simply don’t have the motivation or confidence – we can help make this happen” he said. “We are also aware of how much time young boys and girls are spending in their rooms with their heads glued to mobile devices or streaming hours of YouTube on their laptops. These type of outdoor nature and horse parks provide the necessary timeout and family bonding time,” Naish Said.

Operating a Horse Park Business is second nature to Naish Hogan who was Born in NSW to a family of stock-horse breeders, trainers and competitors and learnt to ride and train horses from a young age. He has a healthy competitive spirit which has seen him compete on the National Campdrafting Circuit and was Ranked No.2 in Australia at the 2012 Equitana Event called, The Way of the Horse.’ Let’s face it, these sports are not for the faint -hearted. For those who are curious, Campdrafting is a highly

competitive sport involving a stock-horse and rider working cattle inside an arena and the Equitana Australia Event, called ‘The Way of the Horse’ is the ultimate test where three of the best Australian horseman are put through a gruelling three-day test attempting to ‘break-in’ selected unbroken young stock horses.

Beachmere puts ITSELF on the map.

Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG) has recently published and distributed the updated Beachmere Locality Map. Some years ago local businesses produced a map of the area but, as Beachmere does not have a Community Hub or any Information Centre, it had not been updated for some time.

Local community group BANG “saw red” last year when Beachmere was actually left off some maps and promotional material produced by the Moreton Bay Regional Council and its promotional arm MBRIT.

Dianne Hill, a BANG committee member said, “Beachmere does not have an Information Centre or Community Hub and since the local library was closed we have no shop or area dedicated to promoting our local community.

Beachmere was often forgotten or not included when information was distributed but when we noticed Beachmere had actually been omitted from a map we knew things had to change – so we updated and printed our own map.”

“We couldn’t have done it without the amazing help from Lisa at Fantastic Reproductions. We nearly had to start from scratch and then add all the new streets and areas in. Beachmere has undergone quite a lot of development over recent years and it all had to be included and updated,” Dianne said.

“The map was made possible through the sponsorship of many local shops and businesses, and local photographers Jessica Culley and Geoff Stock provided some great photos of the local area to highlight the diversity of the area from river to bay”, Dianne said.

The updated map includes new streets, subdivisions and developments and shows picnic areas, boat ramps, amenities and shopping. A copy of the Beachmere Locality Map can be obtained from many of the local caravan park, motel and most of the shops in Beachmere

Alarming Costs Affecting our Community of Pumicestone Too many local households are seriously struggling to make ends meet. People are telling me the main reason for this is the ever-increasing prices they are paying for electricity, water, car rego and the general cost of living, that is now so out of control. Our local charity organisations are struggling to provide much-needed assistance to people within our community due to the increasing demand on their services from families who need a hand.

We shouldn’t sugar coat it. This donothing Labor government is having a big impact on our community – people are hurting and it can’t continue.

August 18th marked 51 years since the battle of Long Tan which saw the action of 108 Anzacs fight against an estimated 2,500 Viet Cong force. It was my privilege to attend the Vietnam Veteran Commemoration at Bribie Island.

I have gotten to know so many of our local Veterans personally and have a deep respect for all of them. The courage and bravery they showed through serving our great nation can never be forgotten.

A LNP Government will build stronger families and safe and liveable communities by helping veterans in five key ways which will ensure when todays ex-ADF personnel return they can transition back into civilian life.

Community NBN Meeting

A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN Many people living on Bribie Island and surrounds still haven’t been connected to the Government's second-rate NBN. For those who have, there have been numerous issues with unacceptable speeds and drop-outs. Not only does this impact on the reliability of people’s internet connections, itt also affects the landline services which people in our community rely on to feel safe and secure in their homes. The people of Longman have been left behind because of this Government's refusal to acknowledge that their rollout has been nothing short of disastrous. I need your help so that we can keep the Turnbull Government accountable as a community. Come to the Community NBN Meeting and demand a better telecommunications system in Longman.

I’ll be meeting with local residents to demand a more accessible and reliable NBN service. We’ll be having a BBQ, and have letters of demand ready for you to sign and send to Malcolm Turnbull.

BRIBIE COMMUNITY PLANS TO RALLY AGAINST NBN SUSAN LAMB MP MEMBER FOR LONGMAN

It has become an unfortunate norm for members of the broader Bribie Island community to experience issues with the National Broadband Network (NBN). Delays in getting connected, drop-outs, poor speeds and customers being bounced back-and-forth between their telco and NBN Co have frustrated residents to the point of taking action.

‘Philby’, a Bongaree resident and single pensioner, has been trying to connect to the NBN since November last year before her landline is cut-off in October. Over the last nine months, Philby said that NBN Co have scheduled multiple appointments, failing to show up each time.

Worried that she will be left without a working phone line, Philby said “The whole experience has put me in a situation where I’m almost a nervous wreck. I rely on my landline for my health, to make medical appointments and to stay connected with my family who live interstate.”

Commenting on the state of the Network and the rollout, Philby said “It’s not satisfactory, it’s not viable and it’s not reliable.”

In response to residents’ concerns the Member for Longman, Susan Lamb MP, is launching a new community campaign in October to hold the relevant decisionmakers accountable for the failings of

the rollout, and to demand a decent telecommunications service for people like Philby.

Susan Lamb said “Residents in Bribie that are already connected to the copper NBN infrastructure are telling me that there are significant issues with installation, outages and slow speeds.”

Co and the various telcos have to start working collaboratively to resolve this. The absence of accountability is leaving people on Bribie frustrated and angry, and I don’t blame them.”

Some suburbs, such as Bongaree and Beachmere, are only partially able to access NBN internet plans, with some streets unable to connect at all. However, most of these connections are subject to the Liberal National Government’s copper-based Fibre to the Node (FTTN) plan, instead of Labor’s Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) model.

Ms Lamb added “Australians were promised fast and reliable broadband at affordable prices. As the NBN is rolled out it’s becoming increasingly clear that its reliance on outdated technology is leaving consumers stranded with slow speeds and unacceptably high drop-out rates.”

“Quite frankly, people are tired of the blame game; the Government, NBN

and if they’re actually getting the services that they’re paying for.”

“It’s time we rallied together as a community to send a clear message to the Government that we deserve and expect more.” Ms Lamb concluded.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend the upcoming Community NBN Meeting in Bongaree.

Participants will be able to help place pressure on the Government to deliver an accessible and reliable telecommunications service in the Bribie area by sending Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull a personalised ‘letter of demand’.

Susan was a guest speaker when campaigning prior to her election win and always says she enjoys visiting Beachmere and learning about local issues.

Jackson to farewell and celebrate his retirement. Jacko was a Bribie Paramedic and has had an outstanding career with the ueensland Ambulance Service for 4 years, one of our longest serving Paramedics. Jacko tells me he is going to buy his wife Fran a new clothes iron, as Fran has ironed over 10,000 uniforms throughout his career. A surprise came when inister for Ambulance Services, on. Cameron Dick phoned in to thank Jacko for his e cellent service to our wonderful state.

I joined Vietnam Veterans Remembrance Day ceremonies at both Bribie Island and Beachmere on August 18th. We paid tribute to the 60,000 Australians that served in Vietnam, 3,000 were wounded and sadly, 521 gave their lives for our freedom. The Government of the day and parts of the community treated our soldiers badly. When you recognise a veteran, please say thank you, we all owe them.

I was delighted to sponsor Logan Beattie who is one of only 20 young people in Australia selected to travel overseas and attend the Goal eeper Development and Training Tour in England and Spain this year. This talented young man deserves all the support we can muster. Well done on your achievement Logan, along with your mum Cherie, your coaches, team mates and community are all so proud.

The Premiers Reading Challenge saw me have a fun time presenting gift books to the Prep students at the new Pumicestone State School.

Jim and June Daniell celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary recently. They were amongst the first homes built in Banksia Beach.

Jim also received his 50 year service badge and certificate as a JP in the community. Their day was made even more special with the arrival of yet another great grandchild, Ava Sarah Shaw first child born to Craig and Samantha Shaw.

Congratulations to all, a week of celebrations.

I attended the Beachmere Pelicans Rugby League Club to present a grant cheque for $14,583 for them to purchase sunshades and first aid equipment. It is great to support our young people in sport, the leaders of tomorrow.

Children and parents cross from the beachfront and shops to the playground and many people cross the road from the off-street parking to the doctors surgery, café and shops. This is exacerbated when the Mobile Library visits the area and visitor numbers further increase.

“Speeding vehicles take the corner very fast and we have lots of elderly people and children crossing the road here. That is why we asked the Council to reduce the

areas for the shops, beachfront and parks.

Local residents are also campaigning for traffic calming on other major roads in the village. Although mostly designated as 50kph streets locals despair of not only the speed some motorists travel but the noise of racing vehicles.

Councillor for Division 2, which includes Beachmere, Mr Peter Flannery believes the traffic speed limits are suitable for the area but “there are a few irresponsible drivers speeding and who are causing the problems in the area and they need to be dealt with.”

Fashion Shop on Bribie Island opened 35 Years Ago in Aug 1982.

A Credible Local Business Success Story.

Dianne Wells, current owner of Anna’s Fashion Boutique has been meeting the needs of Bribie Island local people and visitors for 35 years since opening in 1982.

Despite a 10-year break from 2003 -13 to pursue other interests and further study Business Management and Marketing , the Boutique, having been built on good foundations continued to operate under new management, providing quality products to clients, entertainment and subsequent fundraising for numerous local clubs and organisations. Some may remember her first shop in Toorbul St, Bongaree called Allure Boutique situated where the current post office is located.

As the (population) demographics and psychographics (lifestyles) changed over the years the business and name changed to Deckout for Women in the eighties, then adding two more stores, Deck Shoes and Deckout for Men. During the nineties an innovative incubation business model was created by Dianne ; which encouraged 8 other women to enter the business environment, thus Deckout relocated to the new premises in First Ave with a name change to Wells Cargo Barn.

After 21 years in 2003, Dianne left the business for 10 years, subsequently new

I plough the waters on the edge of shore, from time to time I watch that single fishing boat run the island’s length, out there, out the back, trawler, like me, ourselves’ own islands.

Devoid of eyes, the shores are left behind like me all the view is cloaked, reflective darks and whites and greys.

The sea echoing softly murmuring, and gently flat on the breathless, changing air; mysterious, the island lost of form; the trawler clear, storm arising, tide incoming and strickening sound my feet, soft and moaning as the wind on the rise, swirling, flotsam, carrying who knows beneath?

I feel us yearning, for kind, for completion, aching to not want, the sand laid bare under my barest feet, tunnels and ridges exposed, lost shells in only white, sticks and weeds…

Run through the storm, I cry ! On the full tide let me plunge in the heavy swells, let storms break over me, drift me awash and away ! , white sea under the purple sky, white gulls and lapwings crowd, and jetsamed beach tenses, waiting….

Strange light illuminates our loss : that trawler’s catch, that island’s sight, that shore’s presence, those sea-birds’ flight, and my you.

In 2014, at an age when most are thinking about retiring, a change in circumstances however, created an opportunity for Dianne to buy back the boutique in Kangaroo Avenue, subsequently renaming the business Anna’s Fashion Boutique after her daughter, with whom she was pregnant in 1982 when it all began.

We did it! The Fit Beyond 50 team walked the 35kms of The Bloody Long Walk on Sunday the 13th of August. Look we all have a cap to prove it!

As we shivered in the dawn in a park in Shorncliffe we discussed our sanity at being awake at 3am so we would get there on time to line up in the dark for our caps and the barcodes that we needed to time our walk. We stood amongst 1600 other just as excited, shivering and laughing walkers proving we weren’t the only craziesa!

At 6.20am they set us free into the park and pointed us in the vague direction of Southbank. We happily strode through suburban streets and into the Boondall wetlands, a place inhabited by vicious creatures known as cyclists who were enraged at having to share THEIR paths with lowly “Charity Walkers”.

I’m not sure if it’s the extra tight lycra that stretches over their dangly bits that causes their bad tempers or their helmets tightly squeezing any civility out of their brains,

but these cyclists weren’t nice. Our group survived the pedalling, bell ringing, abuse yelling onslaught and I absolutely, cross my heart hope to die, believe we are alive today only because we have strong legs and the fitness to jump sideways.

Once we left the wetlands we slowly began climbing up into the mountain range known as Hamilton.

Yes okay, to most these are hills, but we are from BRIBIE so any rise over 1cm is a mountain to us! We laughed, moaned and groaned our way up to the highest peak and then just after the 22km point we headed down towards the Brisbane river and we knew we were on the home stretch.

Yes, jumping on a Citycat was suggested more than once and we faced our biggest challenge having to walk past frequent bars and cafes along the boardwalk. We staggered through this temptation desperately inhaling the smell of bacon and coffee, remember we started at dawn and it was now about 11am!

Finally after crossing the river and dodging our way through the Southbank crowds we finished at the Wheel of Brisbane in Southbank. It had taken us 7hours, 3mins and 33 seconds.

We were sore, tired and ridiculously jubilant! Yes there are blisters, we wear them with pride. I cannot express how

Senior Gentle Back Stretching Before You Start

These stretches can be done on a soft mat on the floor or in your bed. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these stretching exercises stop! Start slowly with each stretch and give your body time to adjust to doing something new. It is not a race to the finish! You may be comfortable only performing one of the stretches and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Really!

Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements, please work at a pace that suits YOUR body. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Take each stretch SLOWLY and CAREFULLY and make sure NOT TO HOLD YOUR BREATH. Remember, stretching is a great way help with movement and balance and to also help relax tight muscles. Small changes can make a difference.

Even practicing only one stretch a day will give you improvement in your movement over time. So get comfortable and relaxed on your bed or a soft mat on your floor and lets get started.

PELVIC TILT STRETCH

Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor Keep hands on the tummy so you can feel movement of abdominal muscles and the low back as you correctly perform the pelvic tilt. Reverse the curve of your low back. Gently press the lower back against the floor by tightening the abdominal muscles and tilting or rolling the pelvis backward. Hold for 3 seconds, then relax all muscle contraction and allow return of curve in low back. Repeat slowly, only do as many as you feel comfortable doing . Each time you practice the stretch try and hold each tilt for a little longer until you can hold it for 20 seconds.

SIDE KNEE DROP

Lie on your back and bring both knees up toward the chest. Keep the shoulders flat on the floor as you allow the knees to drop to one side; only allow the knees to move as far as comfortable; Do not allow pain to develop. Keep the lower back flat on the floor or bed to avoid injury. Hold position for 10-30 seconds. Bring knees up to the midline and repeat on the other side. Hold position for 10- 30 seconds. Repeat until back feels more relaxed and looser

KNEES TO CHEST BACK STRETCH

Keep your back and hips muscles relaxed while doing this low back stretch, so most of the work is done with the hands and arms. Do not cause pain during this lower back stretch, only a feeling of gentle traction. Lie on your back. Grab your knees. As you pull them up toward your chest monitor the feeling of stretching the low back. Move slowly and breathe during this stretch. Slowly push the lower back into the floor. Do this 8 to 10 times, making sure when you press down your lower back that you keep it there for a count of 5 - 10.

PRAYER POSE BACK STRETCH

Assume the posture for the prayer pose stretch, as shown here. Hold this posture and relax, while stretching the fingertips forward and the buttocks backward until a comfortable and gentle stretching sensation is felt in the spine and low back. Hold for 10 to 30 seconds. Repeat as many times as is comfortable.

incredibly proud I am of every one of the team and the way they handled this challenge, it was never just a stroll on a Sunday, it really was The Bloody Long Walk!

The absolute best, exciting, fantastic thing for me is that these ladies now see a 10km walk as “just going for a nice walk”. They walk places they used to drive to and I regularly hear “It’s only about 6ks so I walked”. This challenge changed lives, and as crazy as it seems, while we waited for our lifts home, and were too scared to take our shoes off, there was already talk about what the next challenge could be.

The friendships forged are awesome and the health benefits go way, way, way beyond this walk. When I promote Fit Beyond 50 as “life changing” it’s not advertising hype!

I’m privileged to see lives change, not only clients but whole families.

I witness diabetes drugs stopped, blood pressure pills no longer needed, sore backs disappear and smiles and laughter appear after years buried beneath medication.

Many of the ladies who walked on Sunday were part of our last 12 week challenge and fitness is now a major part of their lives. Fitness does make you Happy, Energetic, Strong, Confident, or freezing cold standing in a park on a Sunday morning, but to get all of this you do need to accept the challenge of change.

WOMEN’S HEALTH FOR BEACHMERE

Medicrew at Beachmere are really supporting the local Beachmere community in growing their practice.

Highly qualified Nurse Practitioner / Midwife Shannan Opia joins “the Beachmere crew” from early September.

Shannan is able to diagnose, assess, prescribe, treat and refer and takes a special interest in Women’s Health as well as Skin Conditions.

Shannan expands the existing team of Dr Jason Miller and Nurse Practitioner James Denton with Anchita Karmarkar, specialising in pain management, available on Wednesday mornings.

Medicrew Beachmere is also included in

the Hospital Avoidance Program which aims to reduce the number of patients presenting at Hospital Emergency Departments for treatment. With their Acute Care Area set up they are also able to take the overflow of patients from overloaded hospitals / emergency departments.

Increased facilities are already planned for the busy local practice including Fracture Clinics and X Ray facilities which would save a painful road trip and lengthy wait to facilities at Caboolture or Morayfield.

Herbs have been used worldwide for as long as human kind has existed.

I am really excited about herbs and their uses. I grew up with herbs, my Mum studied herbology and I have fond childhood memories of helping her selling herbs at the markets- My job was to write the botanical names on the labels. I would listen on as she would discuss with her customers all about their therapeutic uses and how to grow them.

In my Naturopathy studies I am excited to be learning more about the therapeutic uses of herbs and am happy to be sharing some with you now. It was really hard to just choose 5 as there are so many herbs that are so amazing and can benefit us in so many ways. Here they are:

Bribie Island Healthy Slimmers had their 36th Graduation at the Bribie Island Golf Club in Woorim on the 22nd July.

Thanks go to the Golf Club for making our day a great success. Once again we have had a great year with our weight loss.

Our Queen for this year is Jan Sampson who had a loss of 19.9 kgs. Our Princess was Ellen Beechy with a loss of 10.1 kgs and our Runner up Margaret King with 6.7 kgs loss. We have a club membership of 54 with a big turnout every Tuesday morning of members trying to keep healthy and also enjoy the friendship of other members with the same goal. We would like to say thanks to Wrights Fruit Barn and the Bongaree Bakery who have continued to support us over the years.

Decimating landlord rights will threaten rental market The real estate industry peak body, the REIQ, has labelled the Greens’ “Renter’s Rights” policy as unworkable and, if implemented, would pose a threat to the health of the rental market.

The Greens have outlined a policy platform that would have landlords’ rights decimated in favour of tenants’ rights with no thought to the future health of the state’s rental market.

“Investors have a range of options open to them, including shares and other asset classes. If their rights to manage their property are removed they’ll simply choose to invest elsewhere,” she said.

“Essentially, both tenants and landlords want the same thing - a ‘set and forget’ arrangement where both sides have security.

“What we need is a regulatory framework that supports those goals. A balance must be found and it won’t be found if the Greens have their way,” she said.

New rental arrangements forming part of the Greens’ policy include: •

One-third of Queenslanders rent and the overwhelming majority of those rent from • private landlords therefore the continued participation of property investors is crucial • to the state’s rental market sustainability, the REIQ has warned.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said removing landlord rights would not benefit tenants, instead weakening the market and driving away a section of investors.

“It’s simply unrealistic to expect that landlords will continue to invest in real estate if they are faced with untenable arrangements that don’t allow them to protect the value of their asset and strip them of fundamental rights,” she said.

“One of the most common clarion calls of tenant advocates is that tenants should have the right to longer-term leases. But they already do,” she said.

“Tenants have the right to negotiate a longer term lease with the landlord under the current legislation – but many tenants prefer flexibility and don’t want to be locked into a rental agreement when their work situation is not secure.

“In the years of the mining boom, we saw workers flock to western Queensland to work in the mines, and once that boom ended, workers moved on in search of work elsewhere,” she said.

REIQ CALLS ON PALASZCZUK GOVERNMENT TO DELIVER ON CPD PROMISE REAL estate peak body, The Real Estate Institute of Queensland, has called on the State Government to honour its more than two-year-old promise to introduce mandatory CPD to the real estate profession.

REIQ Chairman Rob Honeycombe said the Government had been stalling since taking office and enough was enough – it was time to come good on the promise.

“Queenslanders are staring down the barrel of another election and before our politicians start wheeling out more promises, we’re asking them to deliver on the promises they’ve already made,” Mr Honeycombe said.

Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Anthony Lynham spoke at the REIQ Awards for Excellence before 600 real estate professionals and gave a public commitment that the Palaszczuk Labor Government would introduce this important consumer protection measure in its first term.

Treasurer Curtis Pitt also agreed that this was “a no brainer” and gave the REIQ a firm commitment that mandatory CPD would be introduced.

“More than 50,000 Queenslanders work in real estate and the profession would benefit significantly from increased levels of consumer protection and trust that this measure would bring,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Lawyers, accountants and financial planners all handle people’s personal wealth and must undertake ongoing CPD – why should real estate be any different?

“A real estate agent can get their qualifications and never step foot in a classroom again for the next 50 years.

“Real estate agents are handling a person’s biggest asset, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the consumer has no guarantee their agent is up to date with legislation changes or other industry issues – why aren’t those consumers worth protecting, Ms Palaszczuk?” Mr Honeycombe said.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella and Chairman Rob Honeycombe have also met with all independent MPs and garnered every crossbencher’s support.

“We’ve met personally with every independent and we have iron-clad support for introducing mandatory CPD to the real estate profession,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“In addition, we have spoken with

Opposition Government and we know this is an issue that has bi-partisan support,” Mr Honeycombe said.

Mandatory CPD would bring Queensland into line with other states, where minimum education requirements ensure every real estate practitioner must maintain their professional knowledge every year to retain their licence to operate.

The proposed model would also bring all Queensland real estate practitioners up to the same professional standard that is currently met by REIQ members.

“Our members complete 100 points of CPD training every year and this helps to ensure their professional knowledge about the legislation and the rules that govern this sector is up to date.

“Consumers need to know that the person handling their largest asset, the source of their personal wealth, is trained and, importantly, spends time maintaining their professional knowledge every year,” Mr Honeycombe said.

“Quite frankly, I’m surprised the Government doesn’t seem to agree that consumer protection is important.”

Beachmere Residents Visit Police Minister

assaults, burglaries, break and enter incidents, and damage to the premises of local businesses. The reports made to Queensland police by residents have gone unattended, as well as lengthy delays when they do attend.

The recent decision to have Beachmere attended by Bribie Island Police Station, rather than the closer, better staffed Caboolture Police Station, has created further problems.

Faith Gray said, “There is need of a tangible community policing strategy, with regular youth diversion activities. We need the engagement of Queensland Police with this community, and see young people having positive interactions with police.”

The delegation consisted of members of the community, and of the Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG): Karen Harris, President of BANG; Donna Martin, Aileen Mackinnon, and Faith Gray. The meeting with Minister Mark Ryan, was initiated by the Member for Pumicestone, Mr Rick Williams, as a response to concerns raised by community members at the BANG Social Evening on the 20th June 2017.

The priorities highlighted by the community, and related to Mr Mark Ryan, was to see an increase in community policing strategies, and a reduction in

response time to call outs by Queensland Police.

Beachmere Area Network Group President Karen Harris stated that the incidence of hooning and theft may be on the increase, but it was the delay in response times, and even the nonattendance at incidents, which was causing the most distress to residents.

The loss of the Police Liaison Officer in recent months has left the community with no one to contact for information, or to invite to community events.

Over fourteen (14) years ago, Beachmere had its own Police Station in the community. Since its closure, the residents of Beachmere have been subjected to random acts of violence,

Donna Martin said, “Beachmere is an amazing place to live, but we want security for our older residents in their homes, and for our young children in the community.”

Member for Pumicestone, Mr Rick Williams said, “This delegation, and this visit to Parliament and the Minister for Police, came about after the community came together and asked for a solution to the problems they were having. I have a good working relationship with Mark Ryan, the Police Minister, and was happy to help the Beachmere residents.”

The Beachmere Area Network Group (BANG), with the support of all levels of government, and the community of Beachmere have agreed to unite and coordinate efforts to demand an increased police presence in the area.

What Does Happiness Mean to you?

What does happiness mean to YOU? is it a person or a place? a memory or an experience? It is defined differently by each individual but all coming to the result of being ‘Happy’. Happiness I believe can be spilt into short term and long term - for example: Short Term happiness is usually something tangible, edible, wearable something that makes you feel good for a short period of time.

Whereas long term happiness is a little bit harder to come across.

Long Term happiness is a feeling of contentment, being proud of yourself and keeping your spirits high. I find long term happiness is a type of happiness you reflect back on where as short term is more in the future or present. Long term happiness isn’t going to be remembering all the times you had something insignificant and small impact your life like the time you bought a new dress but more the people and memories that were created and shared which you can reflect on and continue to feel ‘Happy’.

I believe these are a few very important key elements for being ‘Happy’.

Companionship, Love, Appreciation and Trying new things. Let me explain further: Companionship: Being able to share experiences with people and retell an event or story brings happiness to those who share. Having someone to talk to and fall back on is a very comforting feeling that often brings happiness to people even at the saddest of times.

Love: Love is a very strong element.

Knowing that you are loved and showing your love for something/one else shows a great deal of happiness as it is a trait that goes hand in hand. Love is found in so many unique shapes and sizes which means there is multiple ways a person can feel this element of happiness.

Appreciation: Feeling appreciated by your companion. Whether it be of a relation or a stranger, appreciation goes a very long way. It helps people continue to push through tough times and coming out satisfied with their task and rewarded for it through kind words or gestures.

Fundraiser Concert for Meals on Wheels

The Golden Age Entertainers held a concert on the 9th of August to raise much needed funds for Bribie Meals on Wheels. They entertained about 70 people with popular tunes from around the globe, Des Peters performed his Bush Poetry. They raised $780 for Bribie Island Meals on Wheels.

The funding that Meals on Wheels currently receive from the Federal Government does not cover the cost of producing fresh nutritious meals for our seniors and any other people who would like this service on Bribie Island and surrounding areas.

Bribie Island Meals on Wheels currently has 97 volunteers who willingly give their time to deliver this vital service, and risk the health and independence of our seniors and any people that need this service, so they can stay in their own homes and continue to be independent.

They have been operating since 1984 on Bribie Island, they have 160 clients and deliver between 475 to 525 meals weekly and do have clients under the age of 35.

First wave for Moreton Bay coastal hazard project Moreton Bay Regional Council has taken the first step towards developing its strategy to prepare for coastal hazards such as storm tide flooding and coastal erosion.

At its coordination committee meeting today, council endorsed a communication and engagement plan for its planned Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy to help identify and involve stakeholders in the strategy’s development.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said it was a critical first step in creating the strategy, with Moreton Bay being home to more than 170km of coastline and a number of urban coastal communities, including Bribie Island, Beachmere, Donnybrook, Griffin, Redcliffe and Toorbul.

“It’s expected that the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy will encompass up to 15 per cent of the region; that’s why council’s first step has been to create an engagement plan and make sure all stakeholders can be involved in the process,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“As work on the strategy progresses, council will establish a community

reference group which will include community representatives from across the region.

“Council will also hold community days, meet with local chambers and industries, engage local environment groups and host online surveys and information on its website.

A formal expression of interest campaign will be launched later this year seeking nominations from the community to be part of the reference group.

“We want to make sure local residents, community groups and businesses can keep up-to-date and have their say as we develop this important strategy.”

The first phase joins a $500,000 commitment by the Queensland Government towards council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy through its QCoast2100 program.

It follows council’s recent success at the Australian Costal Councils Conference held at Redcliffe, which saw Moreton Bay take out a hometown victory for its innovative use of remotely-piloted aircrafts to study seawalls along Moreton Bay. The project enabled council to capture information on more than 31km of seawalls in the region in just three days, including a number of locations that would’ve otherwise been inaccessible on foot, and provide data for important documents including the upcoming Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy.

Cranky Lizard Speaks

Rain falls from the sky as a result of several complex and inter-acting meteorological events. It falls on cities, on beaches, on people, on motor vehicles driving along roads and motorways, on the oceans, on rivers, on the land in the Outback of Australia and on farmland.

Rainfall is indiscriminate. It goes where it goes and there is very little that humans can do about it !

Cranky Lizard believes that water tanks attached to the rain gutters of domestic houses is a good idea. Capture your own water and use it in your garden, wash your car, stand under it on hot days, whatever !

It is your water, it came from rain from the sky, you captured it – it belongs to you.

For them, rain is life.

Rainfall on their land, their crops, and their pastures is the difference between living and working or not functioning at all. It is that fundamental.

No rain, no water : no water, no life.

Simple.

Surrounding our cities like a necklace of bluestones, are the dams, lakes and weirs which hold the water which is reticulated through our cities to our homes by pipes which, in turn, end in taps, behind which lurks the water we need for our homes.

Turn on the taps………..water comes !

As rate payers and tax payers, we, collectively pay for that privilege, to have water reticulated to our homes and we also pay for the water we use in our homes by way of metered usage.

Which is, as it should be.

In the rural sectors of our country, on our farms, sheep and cattle stations, water is not reticulated to our homes by any level

of Government – if you want water in your home, you must find it, get it out of the ground and into your home – at your cost.

a new idea, Oh No ! An old idea which gained new skinny, ugly legs and ran across the bureaucrat’s desk.

You must buy the pumps and the bore casings, pay for drilling the bore, pay for the pipes and the tanks and the ball valves in the tanks ; or you can pay for making a small dam on high ground on your property and pay for the pipes and the house tanks and domestic pumps to get water, under pressure into your home.

Why not tax the water that is collected in the dams on country farms and properties ??

In the cities and towns, we pay for Government services : in the Outback, those who live there pay for doing it themselves, which was the normal order of the way things are done.

Until recently.

In some obscure office, in a Southern State Government, a grey presence, a bureaucrat, charged by the State Government to find revenue for that Government to spend on its programmes of social engineering peeled back a thin layer of common-sense and the grey presence lit up !! An idea crawled from the recesses of the bureaucratic brain, not

Bribies ageless man 91 years young and still going strong

By Earnie Mayne Ken Robert Johnstone was born on August 1st 1926 in Fitzroy, Victoria, then when he was about 18 months old moved to Tasmania before moving to Bribie Island at the age of 80 in 2007.

In Tasmania Ken went to Burnie State School for a couple of years then he was transferred to the Burnie Convent School, which was run by Nuns until he was 13.

That’s when he commenced his working life.

Ken started work as an electricians assistant with a man called Paddy Eglington, who was very close to Ken. Paddy taught him to become a qualified electrical tradesman. He then moved around a bit and worked on the Burnie hospital and then moved to the wilderness to electrify the north-west of Tasmania, that was in 1943.

Cranky Lizard believes that Governments will do to its Constituents whatever its Constituents are silly enough to let them do !

Cranky Lizard also warns that an ugly water tax beetle has a cousin. A cousin which lives its dark little life in water meters…if you do not use enough water through the meter into your house, you may find this ugly, greedy, little reptile snaking its way onto your water bill.

Except, in the case of people, who make their living from the land, producing food, in one form or another for human consumption.

It should not be a shattering glimpse of the obvious to say that rain provides the water upon which our lives depend.

Whether this tax was fair and reasonable was a ridiculous issue. How dare anyone raise the issue of fairness ? It was much needed revenue and that was that. The ugly, scaly backed, water tax beetle was let loose and off it scuttled like the foul little creep that it was !

Anger and resistance has risen rapidly against the water tax beetle and resilient, innovative people will find ways to defeat it…but the best way to beat it is vote out of office ,the turkeys who gave life to the beetle.

For many people rain is inconvenient, messing up parades, dampening picnics, wrecking expensive hair styles, causing traffic crashes and, sometimes, lethal and destructive floods of water; which kill humans and animals and rip away homes, bridges and roads ; but for the most part, for most people, rain is just inconvenient

Without waxing too lyrical, rain is a gift from the elements, or from the Gods of whichever religion you believe. It belongs to us all. It is not for the disposal or ownership of one individual or group of individuals.

Ken Johnstone In 1947 he got married to Carol and began working for the Tasmanian hydroelectric scheme for a few years then he moved on to the Ross Arden tin mine for 5 years. He then worked for APPM paper mills doing various jobs.

Ken is the father of four children (3 girls and a boy). He worked all his life until asked to retire at 80. He spent the last

Glazed eyed, brown suited, combed over followers ; wild eyed metro humans with asymmetrical hair ; the clumping of the shoes and sandals resonated through the corridors – and the ugly, greedy, envy based water tax had its breech birth. And what an ugly mal formed creature it was ?

Who to tax ? How to tax? What rate to tax ? Became huge issues which required meetings, press conferences, marketing plans and focus groups.

And so the water tax began to take form.

Water, which came from rain and collected in dams, made by farmers at their own cost, would be taxed !! Brilliant. twenty years of his working life in Penguin before heading to Bribie Island in 2007.

His hobbies were repairing old radios and TVs and is an avid Hawthorn supporter.

Ken lives on his own in Bongaree and does all his own cooking and other household chores without even batting an eyelid and his residence is immaculate.

I met Ken three years ago and Solander bowls club and was flabbergasted when I found out his age. He looks at least 20 years younger than what he is. Four years ago (at 87) he purchased a new VW Golf and said he went for a drive to run it in -- he drove it to Tassy and back, incredible, he did it on his own.

He has a daughter and son-in-law and three grandchildren who live nearby in Bellara and has a lady friend as well to keep him company. That is when he is when he isn’t creating havoc with a few of his drinking buddies at the Bribie bowls club on a Friday and Sunday between 11 and 1.30pm.

I have never met a more jovial, quick witted and smarter and knowledgeable person in my life. We don’t see Ken as a 91 year old, he is a mate to us and

It is axiomatic to common sense, that when those persons whom we vote into positions of Government, thus giving them power to regulate our lives, begin to believe that they own the water that falls from the sky ; it is time to vote them out on their bums !!

Cranky Lizard also believes that if enough people attach water tanks to their houses, thus diminishing the use of water through the meters attached to your houses, which in turn reduces the revenue gained by the authorities…another form of ugly water tax beetle will slime its way out of the petri dish of some bureaucrat’s mind and wriggle its way into your life and your own water tank.

Remember, Governments will do to you what-ever you are silly enough to let them do !!

Proof of that lies in the programs that exist, which are designed to help us determine what gender we are !!

The days of “ she’ll be right, Mate ! “ are long gone in this country.

And that diminishes us all.

we give him hell, especially because of his Tasmanian background but he usually comes straight back with a logical response.

As you notice from the first paragraph of this little story Ken was born on August 1st, which happens to be the same date as all racehorses and I reckon in his day he would have had to outrun a couple in his younger days in Tassy, especially leaving someone’s farm with an old guy chasing him with a shot gun. He was very handsome in his youth and he still is now.

I don’t mean to preach obout the old boy but he is worth every word. He is a good 20 years older than his mates and all we can say is “we hope we are that good at 91.” That’s even if we make it. Ken still has the pull with the fairer sex. Every woman that meets him at the Bribie bowls club can’t help but give him a kiss on the cheek and a big hug. We just sit there gobsmacked and say under our breath “lucky bugger”.

He is 91 now and I cannot see any reason why in nine years time he will receive a letter from the King or Queen for making it to the big 100. Take care my old mate and we all love you.

A popular club member died from cancer this year and many other past and present members have been hit by cancer in some way. So we will also welcome donations to support the Hospice.”

History Revived at Rotary Park

Rotary Park at the north end of Woorim has been neglected for many years, despite the fact that some buildings are Heritage Listed.

It contains many interesting reminders of a very different era on Bribie Island, when the military occupied the island during World War 2.

The area of Rotary Park has some relics of those distant times, and the buildings now over 75 years old, deserve better recognition and preservation.

Rotary members have sought to preserve and maintain the few structures that remain from “Fort Bribie” that was home to about 40 military men back in the 1940’s In 1996 Rotary did a major restoration of the most significant WW2 relic, a Submarine Indicator Control Loop Control Room building.

Back then the building had been almost completely buried in the sand dunes, but after some 5000 volunteer hours of Rotary effort the building was cleaned, painted and restored to original condition.

The structure of the building remained vulnerable, and after severe storms and high tides in 2010 emergency sand bagging was required to prevent it being claimed by the sea.

Several other large Gun emplacements built in the sand dunes at Woorim during the war, had already been exposed by the sea and receding sand dunes, and had been demolished in 1967 when declared unsafe.

After the War several of the military buildings of “Fort Skirmish” were leased to people for holiday homes over several years, but had eventually to be demolished.

Only two buildings remain today, out of more than 24 structures that formed the Army and Navy defences of Fort Skirmish.

These are the Control Room building on the beach, and one of two Generator Rooms now in Rotary Park, that supplied electricity to the installations. Nothing is being done by any authority to limit the concrete cancer that continues to destroy these unique structures.

There are also several large concrete blocks in Rotary Park. As erosion resulted in sand dunes receding over the years, several large concrete blocks were exposed on the beach which were progressively removed and stored in Rotary Park.

The blocks were the buried foundations of several tall timber look-out Towers along the Ocean beach foreshore. After

the War the timber legs were cut and the Towers demolished , leaving the concrete blocks in the sand which were eventually uncovered by erosion. The blocks have now been incorporated into a Rotary wheel garden design.

Rotary International has pledged that every Rotarian in the world will plant a tree this year. This event on Bribie Island was the first in this worldwide campaign, so 33 Bribie Rotarians planted a tree, plus a few in memory of past Rotarians, and were assisted by their Earlyact counterparts from the Ste School The planting of trees in the new Rotary Park is part a global initiative by Rotarians worldwide, who will collectively plant as many as one and a half million trees around the world this year.

Trumps Idiocy; a Source of Bonding

There is one man that, since recently, dominates a majority of political conversation. Donald Trump. Whether it be about his racist and sexist ideologies or his rumoured-to-be toupee, he seems to be the main topic of discussion everywhere.

The worlds opinions all vary on this one man, some believing he will lead us to a third world war, others believing he will prevent it. Truly, it is unknown to us all what the future holds, though it is likely to be a nail-biter. One thing, however, is universally acknowledged, he is …

Whether you do or do not support Trump, no one can deny the sheer idiocy shadowing everything he has ever said, every idea he has ever had. This brazenness may be beneficial to the world, or it may be its undoing. Instead of discussing if he is right or wrong, can we not simply unite on the front in agreement of his imbecility.

This idea doesn’t require one to

dislike, nor like, him more. Simply a recommendation of a way of creating bridges between two battling tribes. This is an uncomplicated way of providing a way for communities, families and strangers alike to bond and agree. Let us utilise this strange man’s plots and promises to promote our society to one with higher social standards.

You may find yourself asking what this article is truly about. This article is for neither Trump hating nor loving. The purpose of this article, is to bring a fresh perspective into consideration. Instead of pitting against one another on the grounds of Trumps propositions, why not bond over something that everyone agrees upon. Such as the idiocy of Trump, no matter what someone may think of it, it is impossible to deny.

Instead of gaining a sore throat from screaming at someone about the purpose and level of need for a certain Mexican funded wall, why not gain a sore chest from laughing so hard over jokes and enjoyment, all possible because of joining together instead of tearing others apart.

The earliest device that created the illusion of moving images and animations were small machines that were shaped like a circular drum or a cylinder. The inventors pasted still images to the inside of the cylinder, and when it was turned with a crank and viewed at a certain angle, the images would blend together to appear as if they where moving. This machine was called the ‘Phenakistoscope’ and was created in 1829 by a Belgian man called Joseph Plateau. A few years later the Deaedaleum was invented by William Homer, and it allowed more than one person to view the moving imaged at one time. The name of this invention was later changed to ‘Zoetrope’ meaning “wheel of life”. In 1868 the Kineograph (or flip book) came into the world the flip book was invented by John Barnes Linnett. His Kineograph (Latin for “moving picture”) was the first form of animation a linear sequence of images-like a booklet- rather than circular drums.

In 1900 a film maker and director named James Stuart Blackton started making

short films using stop action photography, the film that made him well known was “The enchanted drawing” the film is about a man drawing a character and then interacting with it. This was the start of animation in films and cinema.

Hand drawn animation was used in all the ways people created animation, Disney movies up until ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (which was half hand drawn and half animated with advanced technology) where hand drawn. Most recent movies such as Frozen, Big Hero 6 and Moana where drawn using touch screens and drawn on computers.

For hundreds of years animation has been used as entertainment. They have been used to get important messages across all generation, and used it to make more people aware of what is going on in the world. Delivering political messages has become a regularity. Animation is often used for educational purposes, and learning. In an elementary school and even middle school, animation is used to teach maths, and English, teaching kids how to use different writing devices and many more.

Animation has changed our world in many ways, it has widened our minds and imaginations. It has also made more jobs available. Jobs that use animation are animator, advertisement, teaching and is used in everyday life for entertainment.

Do not let such a man tear people apart, allow him to bring you together.

Blechnum gibbum or ‘Silver Lady’

Welcome to our latest gardening articles, written by a passionate, local Horticulturist, for our equally passionate, local gardening community, living on Bribie Island and surrounds.

Last issue we touched base on the importance of the right mulch for the right plants in the landscape and the perils of using fine powdery mulches around unique plants like Pandanus, which thrive well with their root systems growing in pure sand. The problem being, that its possible for these types of mulches to compact overtime and form an impenetrable waterproof layer and become hydrophobic, which is no good for any plants for that matter. Also, I mentioned the many benefits of using organic additives like composted manures and incorporating fish and kelp brews to our predominantly sandy soils which assist the soil to retain more moisture and help sustain the vital micro-organisms needed to break down the organic matter which creates humus and feeds the plants too. My ongoing sustainable chant and my reasoning for using mulches that allows rainfall to seep through to the soil surface.

Its Official SPRING has Sprung Well, Spring did spring forward a little early this year with a warmer winter than the norm and subsequently, lots of spring flowering plants are in bloom already. Azaleas and Bougainvillea’s still putting on a show, Macadamia’s and Mango, absolutely covered from head to toe, in full bloom, Citrus, are still holding fruit and have new seasons flower buds bursting at the seams and passionfruit powering along also and the scent of Jasmine in the air already, It’s a little hard not to get excited, as I personally prefer the warmth over the cold any day but those cold and extremely windy couple of days in August certainly dried things out to a cinder and true to the timing of the traditional EKKA show day, with August winds all about.

Just love this plant, Blechnum gibbum, sometimes marketed under the trade name- ‘Silver Lady’.

B. gibbum is a robust, dwarf tree fern which prefers morning sunshine to a moderately shady understorey location. They look sensational in groups of three or more which create that vivid eye-catching subtropical theme and feel, especially when planted among taller multi- coloured cordylines. They can be sensitive to salt, wind and bore water, so positioning and care is a priority.

I have seen these specimens on Bribie Island thriving in an understorey landscape situation with minimal care. They look best when you prune the old spent fronds off which reveals a contrasting black trunk. ‘Silver lady’ can grow up to 1.2 m high and wide. They tend to lean towards the sunlight like a satellite dish when planted in real shady environments. You don’t have to over water them, just let the soil dry out a little in between your watering regime, for best results. The fronds form a neat and symmetrical rosette that resemble a graceful looking cycad which ensures the ‘Silver Lady’ stands out from the crowd. I tend to give them half strength liquid fish or kelp brews around the root zone in the growing season and I also enrich the soil with compost before planting them.

They are delicate to look at, hardy in stature, graceful in appearance while providing architectural form and style to your garden. Looks like I have just talked myself into purchasing another one too!

So then, what is PH? And why is it so important?

PH stands for: (Percentage of Hydrogen Ions in the soil) and is referred to how acid or how alkaline your soil is, or sweet or sour it is. If you have a PH kit you should have a chart and a diagram illustrating the percentages between (1) extremely acidic to (14) extremely alkaline and a graph of how the nutrients are mostly available in the middle range, somewhere between (5.5) and (7). While there are volumes written on soil chemistry, I am going to just breeze through here with the very basics and to mention that most soils around Bribie Island are around the (6.5) mark, which is considered slightly acidic and adequate for most plant requirements and lawns in general, as the majority of nutrients are mostly available in that range. If you have an overly acidic soil, possibly from applications of a sulphurous based chemical to treat mites or diseases year after year, you might benefit well from adding some agricultural lime, or dolomite to sweeten your soil and unlock these minerals that may have become otherwise unavailable. It can also be very useful to check your PH range and compare the individual plant requirements with the chart contained within the kit and use that as your reference to monitor your soil over time. So that’s your microbial lot once again this month. Stay tuned to next issue of sustainable gardening. Until then, “See you in the garden”.

Its a good time to dig compost in your gardens and irrigate the lot it in, then apply a good quality mulch to conserve moisture, which lets rainfall percolate through.

Lots of Mites getting around on Azalea, Hibiscus, Rose and Gardenia, Spider mites are microscopic and that’s what causes that silvering of the leaf on Azalea foliage.

And lots of sap sucking pests on Citrus and Rose. I use an organic product called ECO-Oil. It’s made from canola oil blended with Tea tree and Eucalypt oil. It works on most sap sucking pests but repeat applications are needed to gain control, except Erinose mite of Lychee and Hibiscus, which is extremely hard to control, best using wettable sulphur which you can also apply now to Citrus, for rust mite and to Mango for Anthracnose.

Great time to add your composted manures around your fruit trees as they break down slowly. Mango, love their monthly to three monthly applications of potash for fruit formation too. So, Spring into action and reap the rewards later for a bountiful harvest!

From the miracle of microbes to the minerals in chemistry, it’s all connected. From soil bacteria and fungi, to acidity and alkalinity, it’s all relevant. So, when I was asked to perform some PH tests on gardens and lawns last month during some consults, I asked some questions which were also relevant. And as I investigate thoroughly the events leading up to the problem at hand, I find on average, more often than not, that a recent fertiliser or herbicide application may have contributed to the decline in plant health, with this in mind, it’s possible that your PH meter, or kit, could give you a false reading depending on what chemicals were used. Therefore, I recommend if you are in doubt, that there’s a toxicity situation due to excess fertiliser or chemical applications to your lawn or garden, would be to initiate a thorough good flushing around the root zone with water for a few days to see if that helps to remedy any problems first.

SEPTEMBER Numerology Welcome to September beautiful souls, Spring is in the air.

September 2017 welcomes to the 1 energy. You can expect this 1 energy that flows this month in this 1 year to be powerful. The basis of 1 is Om, the first breath of life. The beginning, and the 1 gives birth to all other numbers.

So this is a time to let go of the old. Shut the door on anything

that no longer serves you. Give thanks for past experiences and lessons, grow and move one. This energy is really that simple.

Harness the power of this time, it is going to bring new and exciting changes to your life. You can multiply its power by being brave, pushing yourself and stepping outside of your comfort zones.

Take back your personal power.

The bittergarnituur will usually contain bite-size cubes of Gouda cheese, miniature eggrolls and meatballs, perhaps some slices of a local meat sausage and ofcourse, bitterballen, Holland’s favorite snack.

Bitterballen are deep-fried and crispy breaded rounds with a tender, savory filling. Traditionally made with beef, they can also be prepared with

chicken, veal or even with mushrooms, for those that prefer a vegetarian option.

Bitterballen recipe 100 grams (3.5 oz) butter 150 grams (5.3 oz) flour 700 ml (23.7 fl oz) beef bouillon 30 grams (1 oz) fresh onion, minced 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced 400 grams (14 oz) cooked meat, shredded Salt Pepper Nutmeg For the breading 50 grams (1.8 oz) flour 2 eggs, beaten 50 grams (1.8 oz) bread crumbs Melt the butter in a skillet or pan. When melted, add the flour little by little and stir into a thick paste. Slowly stir in the stock, making sure the roux absorbs the liquid.

Simmer for a couple of minutes on a low heat while you stir in the onion, parsley and the shredded meat. The mixture should thicken and turn into a heavy, thick sauce.

Pour the mixture into a shallow container, cover and refrigerate for several hours, or until the sauce has solidified.

Take a heaping tablespoon of the cold, thick sauce and quickly roll it into a small ball. Roll lightly through the flour, then the egg and finally the breadcrumbs. Make sure that the egg covers the whole surface of the bitterbal. When done, refrigerate the snacks while the oil in your fryer heats up to 190C (375F). Fry four bitterballen at a time, until golden.

Serve on a plate with a nice grainy or spicy mustard.

Grass Root Sport There has been so much recent commentary around Grass Roots Sport and Leadership especially around those sports that struggle to provide the necessary access for children and adults to ‘have a go’ and enjoy the experience, entertainment and benefit of a specific sport. This is an era where we must find new ways to increase participation in the outdoor recreational industries to offset the growing need for many to remain buried in the depth of the complex social media web. We have many recent examples of sporting codes that have reinvented or diversified their products to re-connect with the community to inspire people to get involved. Let’s take out hats off to the investors and stakeholders in women’s sport especially across the Soccer, Netball, Cricket, and AFL products. The leadership of these codes are delivering a culture of equality and diversity and allowing women to shape the entertainment value for the punter whilst inspiring young females to believe that they can be champions of professional entertainment into the future.

Sports Coverage It may be timely for some of our media outlets to discourage content that depicts violent incidents at community sporting fixtures and program ‘breaking news’ that depicts sportsmanship and courage.

The recent incident of an AFL player kicking an opposition player in the head was played repeatedly across some of our mainstream ‘free to air’ media - for what purpose? It’s a sensationalist cheap form of news that enforces a culture that shares footage of violent acts by young males. Some will argue that this type news provides our community with visual examples of what ‘not’ to do. I argue that it only feeds into the minority of intolerant and violent individuals and deprives viewers of experiencing positive courageous sporting moments.

Bribie Island Golf Club Ladies Club Championships 2017 The Ladies of Bribie Island Golf Club played their Club Championships over four days recently, with the final game being played on Thursday 17 August.

The weather conditions were perfect for all four days, and this was reflected in many of the scores. Averaging around 76 golfers on each day of play, the competition was very keen.

John and Ros Layton of italktravel sponsored the Championships again this year and John said they were proud to be part of the event. Both he and Ros were on hand to present the prizes to the winners. Ladies’ Captain Lyn Ball thanked italktravel for their continued sponsorship and encouraged members to support their sponsors whenever possible.

By Cheryl Williams SEPTEMBER FISHING REPORT Well the weather has really been great for fishing over the last few weeks. With the September school holidays fast approaching it’s a great time to book campsites as they are filling up very quickly so get in early to get the site that you want. A couple of weeks ago we had a head on accident on the beach at Woorim now is a good time to take note on the rules and regulation on driving on the beach and most importantly make sure you grab your vehicle permit from Gateway Bait and Tackle before making that trip up the beach as the fine is more than the permit. Lots of fish being caught out there on the surfside and in Pumicestone passage. Whiting on the surfside near 1st, 2nd lagoon and the campsites preserved beach worms are the best bait. Some good size Dart being caught on the surfside between 1st and 3rd Lagoon grab some pippies and you will be sure to catch a feed. The Tailor are starting to run on the surfside as well as in the passage you will need some Pilchards. Bream are out about Avon Wrecks, Bellara, White Patch, Banksia Canals and Red Beach you could try yabbies and prawns. The Ripples and Sandstone Point have been the best place for Snapper, cuttlefish will certainly catch a feed. There have been a few crabs around a bit early but however our water is a little warmer so they are starting to show up in the passage and along Ningi Creek. One of our avid anglers managed some good size Flathead 68cm caught at The Ripples as well as a 63cm at the Avon Wrecks. So there is heaps of fish to be caught out there so lets get out and amongst it with the kids on the school holidays.

Momentum Driving on soft sand can be compared to a speed boat on water. When the boat is travelling slowly, it sinks into the water a little and the engine is required to work harder to maintain forward momentum. As soon as the boat speeds up it starts to plane along on top of the water. The engine requires much less effort to push the boat along and the boat is able to quickly skim along the surface of the water. Similarly, driving slowly on soft sand will allow the tyres to sink into the sand much more than driving more quickly. When the tyres sink in a little, the engine must work much harder to maintain forward movement.

As you increase your speed, your tyres will float on top of the soft sand much more, and the effort required to maintain your forward momentum will be greatly reduced.

Use low range initially. If you start to get bogged, low range will provide you with the power you need to drive out, but will also allow you adequate speed to keep you on top of the sand. If you decide that the beach is hard enough then you can change to high range. CAUTION: Do not overdo your speed. Driving on sand is nothing like driving on the road and driving quickly greatly increases the chance of serious accident.

Bogged If you regularly drive on the sand, then eventually you’ll get bogged. Accept this fact and prepare for it and your day will be

•Slowly drive backwards and forwards over the same track. This compacts the sand and hopefully allows you to drive out.

•If these tips don’t get you out then get your shovel out and start digging. Choose which direction you want to drive out and then dig out the sand in that direction.

Don’t forget that you’ll need to clear the sand from underneath your axles and differentials as well. And if you’re bogged enough then you’ll also need to clear the sand away from your undercarriage as well.

•Make a track for your wheels. You could try lining the track with dry seaweed (wet seaweed can be slippery), sticks, leaves etc. Anything to gain some traction.

•Also, try something like Max Tracks.

Static methods of recovery and those that don’t use other vehicles are much safer.

•If these fail then get out your snatch strap if you have a travelling companion. Keep in mind that you don’t need to tear the car in half in order to pull someone out of the sand. Often a gentle ‘tow’ is enough.

•Still bogged? Do you have a winch? If not then don’t give up, just do it all over again, but try harder.

What to take with you •Long handled shovel •Snatch Straps •4wd acceptable recovery points (factory tow points are often not strong enough).

•Shackles to connect your snatch straps to your recovery points.

•A tree protector or bridle. This can be used to disburse the load across multiple recovery points.

•MaxTrax or equivalent.

•A sand flag so that people can more easily spot you from over the top of a sand dune.

•Tyre deflator to let your tyres down before you hit the sand •Compressor to re-inflate your tyres •UHF Radio so you can ask someone else for help

are two elements to driving your four wheel drive on soft sand. These are: 1.Tyre Pressure 2.Momentum

Applying these elements do your driving technique will result in your vehicle ‘floating’ on the sand, decreasing your chances of becoming bogged. Naturally there is no guarantee that you won’t bury yourself to the axles, but your chance of success is increased if you pay attention to these elements.

Tyre Pressure Reducing your tyre pressure will spread the weight of your vehicle across a greater surface area, and increases the surface area of the tyre in contact with the ground and achieves two objectives: 1. Increases traction 2. Prevents the tyres from sinking

When you do get bogged in soft sand there are a number of techniques to getting back out.

•Firstly, it’s important to realise early that you are bogged. There is no point in spinning your wheels. This just digs you in further and makes any recovery effort more difficult.

•Don’t panic! The vast majority of the time, if your car stays bogged for a while then the only consequence is that you’re late to your campsite. So stay calm and take your time to think it though.

•Reduce your tyre pressure even more than you already have. Remember that the more you reduce your tyre pressure the more your vehicle will ‘float’ on the sand.

•Try to reverse out. Often the tracks you used to drive in are solid enough for you to drive out on. Then you can have
