In this issue, our feature story is on our Ranger in-charge on Bribie Island and how his team goes about caring for our environment ensuring our National Park Island and surrounding areas is a place to enjoy for our visitors and locals. TREE PROBLEMS ON BRIBIE ISLAND

(6) Paid $46.40 for report under Right to Information.

In 2004 Council was requested to trim or lop a gum tree to prevent falling leaves, twigs and branches damaging a swim pool, roof, gutters and yards. REFUSED

This report claimed tree height was 20 metres; FALSE. Height is c 36 m; did not know the difference between North east and north west or south and east; direction of prevailing winds and did not report the lean of 25 to 30 degrees towards 2 residences. The identity of the reporter and employer was redacted.

More requests were made in 2007/08.

The tree, about 60 feet high, became dangerous with a lean towards two properties. Minor trimming was conducted.

A report of these gross errors was forwarded to Operation Dept. on 23 May; it was anticipated “a response will be provided to you by the end of this week” (i.e. 16 June 2017) STILL WAITING

In 2016, Council was requested to have the tree removed. IT NOW REACHED THE HEIGHT OF 115 TO 120 FEET AND WAS LEANING ABOUT 25 TO 30 DEGREES TOWARDS TWO RESIDENCES.

This tree is only one of dangerous gum trees that threatens life and safety of ratepayers and visitors. To the Mayor and CEO, when can we expect to see this dangerous gum tree removed?

Retirement villages to face the music Retirement village mogul, Aveo, has come under attack recently after a joint investigation between ABC’s Four Corners and Fairfax Media that has alleged instances of shamefully high fees, unfair evictions, and convoluted contracts.

“Entry and exit fees are rife within the industry and unfortunately, appear to exploit the elderly: one of Australia’s most vulnerable groups,” said GemLife CEO and Director, Adrian Puljich.

“For this reason, we have never charged these outlandish fees in our company’s history. The latter years in life are a time to feel secure, which is why GemLife pioneered the ‘ageing in place’ strategy, ensuring residents stay in their homes for longer,” said Mr Puljich.

It is purported that the majority of the retirement village juggernaut’s profits come from exit fees taken from residents upon departure. With a resident turnover target of 10 to 12 per cent per annum, up to 40% of a property’s value is taken with the average levy totalling $287,000 in 2016.

“If true, these companies appear to be profiteering from residents having to leave their homes and friendships behind,” Mr Puljich said.

Some retirement villages have previously subjected residents to evictions due to their names being absent from titles, despite having the properties left to them in a deceased partner’s estate.

“If your partner or family member has left a GemLife property to you in their estate, that home belongs to you,” Mr Puljich said.

leader. There was a significantly large white-board calendar stuck to the wall which seemed to sum up the monthly plan and resource allocations - that was impressive.

As Brendan McLarty sat milking his cow on his Family Farm in Shepparton, Victoria as a teenager in the early 1980’s, he had little idea that 35 years later he would become one of Queensland’s most experienced and respected National Park Rangers sharing his love of the environment with his extraordinary gift of communication.

Many of us have grown up with some exposure to the television series, ‘Skippy the Bush Kangaroo’ where Head Park Ranger, Matt Hammond (Ed Devereaux), Mark Hammond (Ken James) and Helicopter Pilot, Jerry King (Tony Bonner) showcase the adventures of young Sonny Hammond (Garry Pankhurst) and his intelligent pet kangaroo, Skippy (Female Eastern Grey Kangaroo) as they confronted the various events surrounding the visitors to the fictional Waratah National Park in Duffy’s Forest, near Sydney. Who can forget young Sonny Hammond, asking his overly intelligent bush kangaroo, Skippy, “What’s up Skip?”

I remember thinking to myself back in the late 1970’s, I wonder how you become a Park Ranger and do all of those exciting things and why these magnificent Grey Kangaroos are so intelligent? Forty-years later I learned that Australian Marsupials are not intellectually rated as highly as young Sonny and his dad made out, however my dream came true as I met the legendary Bribie Island Park Ranger-inCharge, Brendan McLarty. It was 7.30am on a Monday morning when I first met Brendan at the Bribie Island Park Ranger Office wearing his Ranger attire and sharp akubra hat. He was providing a briefing to his team on the weekly plan and at the

same time locating me a coffee cup in preparation for a warm cuppa. The level of calmness and professionalism across his team was palpable. Each of Brendan’s team that I met were warm, friendly and focussed which says a lot about their

We grabbed our coffees and headed out the back of the Park Rangers’ Offices to a wooden four-seater picnic table nestled amongst the tall trees. Apart from Brendan’s unfortunate love of the Hawthorn Footy Club which we will have to accept, Brendan McLarty is the real deal, one of four children raised on a northern Victorian farm with a dad and mum who left no doubt in Brendan’s mind that life is full of responsibilities and adventures. Brendan said, “Growing up on our family farm as a young man in Victoria meant that we had responsibilities and chores to do – there were animals to feed, hay to bail and our cow to milk and if we finished that, our neighbours had many more cows that needed attention – we learned early in life that we have responsibilities to ourselves,

As Brendan says, “I became a Park Ranger because I love animals and the environment they live in. I am extremely passionate about the outdoors and wanted to play a role in protecting it. You need to be patient, humble, assertive, consultative and communicate openly, honestly and respectfully with the members of the public every day.” Moreton Island was a tough apprenticeship into the world of a Park Ranger which incorporated many challenges and changes to the way in which our National Parks are managed and protected. After more than 8 years on Moreton Island, Brendan decided that he would take up a new role on Bribie Island and has lived and worked as part of the Bribie Island Park Ranger community since 1996. Over these past 21 years, Brendan has also completed numerous training programs and ongoing updates as well as an Advanced Diploma in Land and Conservation Management.

For a young man who loved the outdoors and struggled through school and early education, Brendan McLarty knew that he had to forge his own destiny and stamp his imprint on life. In 1983, Brendan’s family relocated to the warmer climate in Queensland on a smaller farm which opened the door for Brendan to begin his new life journey. From an early age, Brendan knew that he loved animals and the environment and in 1987 Brendan was accepted to undertake a Voluntary ‘live-in’ Junior Ranger Role on Moreton Island which was Brendan’s very first Ranger gig. As an 18-year-old Brendan had no concerns with a voluntary role as it included free board, cheap tucker and he could work outdoors every day of the week. Brendan remembers sitting on the Moreton Island Barge on his way to Moreton Island and recalls the sun, ocean and magnificent white sand of Moreton Island and thought that he had died and gone to heaven. Brendan’s mother was often quoted as saying, “when are you coming home to visit Brendan?” It seems that Brendan had plenty of visitors to the beautiful unspoiled Moreton Island and had no reason to leave nature. It was only 12 months into his time on Moreton Island when Brendan was offered a fulltime role as Junior Park Ranger and that was that – he never looked in the rear

To put things into perspective, Bribie Island is over 30 kilometres long, and 8 kilometres at its widest point. The Island tapers north to a long spit at its most northern point near Bulcock Beach, Caloundra. The four essential requirements needed before you venture into the Bribe Island National Park include a well serviced high clearance 4WD vehicle, a vehicle access and camping permit, water and provisions, mosquito repellent, a plan and personally I would throw in a box of snickers and few tubes of condensed milk. You can enter the Bribie Island National Park either at the eastern ocean beach access point or the western entrance which is accessed via White Patch Esplanade. There is also boat access via the Pumicestone Passage Marine Park at Mission Point and Lime Pocket.

Brendan and I chatted for about an hour and as the sun began to break through the trees onto the picnic table where we sat, Brendan invited me to join him on a tour and inspection of the 50-kilometre round trip of the Bribie Island National Park on a day where the sun was beaming, the ocean was still, there was a light breeze and most importantly the national park traffic was minimal. This was my first visit to the Bribie Island National Park so I was like a kid at a theme park with my own ice-cream cake.

appointed with communications systems, video cameras and support equipment.

This was a very quiet weekday, given that the average weekend clocks more than 400 vehicles entering the national park. In fact, the Bribie Island National Park would manage in excess of 59,000 vehicles annually which says a lot about the resources needed to manage traffic and safety. We entered the National Park via the ocean beach access track onto the soft white sand when Brendan briefly stopped the vehicle and said, “Well this is my office, what more could a person want.” It was a spectacular view as we headed up the ocean side beach past the four lagoons and world war II weathered gun emplacements heading towards to the Ocean Beach Camping area approximately 16km north of the entrance which is well signposted. It was acutely obvious that Brendan has an eye for detail and is one of the most observant characters you will ever meet, forever looking to care for people and the environment. We stopped and shared a brief chat with a few visitors and waved at young families and couples who were living the dream of running on the beach and fishing from the edge of the water. You can drive your vehicle as far as the world war II northern search light structure which stands tall and is well signposted in the middle of the beach approximately 21km to the north. We pushed on to undertake an inspection of the northern most section of Bribie Island which sits across the passage from Caloundra. We then returned south via the inland northern access and Poverty Creek access tracks visiting the Lighthouse Reach Camping Site, Poverty Creek and Gallagher Point which are located on the western aspect of Bribie Island against Pumicestone Passage. In our travels, we were approached by a small 4WD which was travelling in the opposite direction, it was clearly exceeding the 30km speed limit on the inland 4WD track. Brendan managed to wave the vehicle down and have a talk to the driver about National Park speed limits. The way Brendan approached and communicated with the driver was noticeably respectful, generous and assertive. Brendan’s final comment to the driver was, “Thank you for your understanding and looking after the environment.” This was a lesson in how to communicate respectfully and get a good result. Brendan said, “It can be difficult for some visitors to understand that the National Park covers a very large area and we are here to assist them with an enjoyable experience. We are dedicated to exposing Bribie Island to everyone but at the same time our charter is to protect the national and marine park environments from damage and abuse and prevent potential injury to visitors,” he said, “As sad as it is, a certain percentage of visitors simply do not seem to understand the need to protect parts of our environment and have no regard for nature or rules.

Much of our work is compliance-based managing the minor group of visitors who will not abide by National Parks laws or road rules.” Brendan said, “Most people are not aware that the Bribie Island national park tracks and beach are gazetted roadways which means that road rules apply across the beach and tracks and are enforced by our Park Rangers and Queensland Police. It is the same rule when you enter the Bribie National Park, you must have a permit and you simply cannot bring animals into the National Park, he said, “We are on standby to respond to events and incidents working closely with our other agencies to prevent a fun day out turning into a disaster. As much as we are fair and reasonable, as a Government Agency, we have to apply a consistent approach to compliance.” One of the essential aspects

to Brendan’s role is educating people about the various native flora and fauna in the National Park. While Park Rangers are not Wildlife Officers, a Park Ranger’s role includes wildlife management. At Bribie Island there are a lot of native animals including; kangaroos, bandicoots, echidnas, white bellied sea eagles, ospreys, turtles, dugong and migratory wader birds. Brendan said, “There is a much greater respect and understanding of our environment today in comparison to the

previous generation,” Brendan recalled the time many years ago as a young boy when he and his dad went crabbing in a local creek and they pulled up a crab which was slightly undersize. Brendan decided to toss the crab back into the creek and his dad tossed Brendan in after the crab. This was clearly a memorable

News Features moment in Brendan’s life. Brendan said, “My crabbing experience with my dad was unforgettable, however I think that is all about educating our children to provide them with the knowledge and tools to share the truth and facts about our environment,” he said, “It can be difficult to inform an adult why we don’t touch or remove timber from the National Parks, but when we explain to a group of children why we don’t pick up timber from the National Park grounds because a tree relies on 75% of nutrients from the timber to sustain itself – it becomes understood and is often shared with parents and future generations.” Brendan said, “The cardinal principal of National Parks is ‘Permanent Preservation to the greatest extent of the natural condition’ - That’s what we are about in a nutshell.”

Brendan described what a day in the life of a Bribie Island Park Ranger entailed including; park maintenance, conducting vessel patrols of Moreton Bay Marine Park including Pumicestone Passage and northern Moreton Bay, repairing infrastructure, park and public inquiries, interpretation, cleaning and maintenance of amenities, conducting pest, plant and animal eradication programs, roadworks, planning and implementing capital works programs, collating data on visitation, involvement in multiagency hazard reduction burns, training, education

Our personal freedoms are slowly being eroded away, airport terminals have become dreadful places, seeds of fear and suspicion, however small, are planted in all our minds ; Australia, as it was, is gone, replaced by a new cynical society where young blame old, and vice versa, for the travails that plague them, strident voices claim discrimination and religion is turned into race by either a stupid or politically correct media, both print and electronic.

Social media posts are filled with anger, community frustration is obvious and law abiding citizens in bars in London are reduced to fighting crazed, cowardly murdering scum with bar stools and beer glasses.

Knife wielding, crazed Islamic terrorists, attack our citizens ; and they mean to kill, they strike for the throat first, seeking to sever the main blood vessels, and, if your carotid artery or jugular vein are severed it is requires a bit more than just

Who are these scum and why do they do it ?

Well…..Cranky Lizard observes that they murder in the name of Allah, the God of Islam. They say so themselves as they slash innocent throats.

Because they have been allowed to live in an environment, supported by our community and thus our Governments, which has taught them hatred : hatred for us, our way of life, our institutions, our great recreation venues, our Christian Churches and Cathedrals, our clothing, our language even the food we eat.

They hate us with an insane fury, we are the cause of their miserable rubbish lives and when we are gone they will live in a Caliphate that will ensure they are all happy. Their insane fury with us is such that even writing these words, Cranky Lizard ponders what retaliation awaits ??

Cranky Lizard observes that not all Muslims are involved in this ; the vast majority are law abiding citizens who are part of our society, want

to be Australians and do the best they can with what they have to live peaceful, sensible lives.

It is easy to identify the problem and to hurl insults and epithets at these killers.

But, what can we really do about it ?

Cranky Lizard knows that the political power to implement the following actions will never reside within reach…but…Cranky Lizard, if given the opportunity, would use every weapon, legal, social, political, economical, military and legislative available to face this hatred down.

Inclusion in our society is the first, and very significant step. We must attack this curse which resides amongst us : programmes designed to integrate young people, programmes built around sport, theatre, education, community activity and participation……programmes designed to penetrate the enclaves where hatred is preached, programmes which would not be left to the Police, as they often are, but programmes which, if necessary are implemented by the Courts and enacted by the community. Programmes which are compassionate, objective and sensible ; but programmes which have teeth !!

No Western country so far, has succeeded in producing a successful de-radicalisation programme for its Muslim youth. Not one. Not the UK, not France, not Germany, not any EU country, not the USA, not one.

Why ? Mainly because many of the youth involved don’t want to change. Religion and its gospel of hate is a powerful force ; it easily overcomes gestures of goodwill and wellmeaning inclusive actions by members of our society.

So. If they don’t want to change, then they must go : go from our society, go from our streets, go from their enclaves, go from our country.

Cranky Lizard accepts that radical ideas create anger and resistance ; but those on the ‘ watch lists ‘ of our security agencies should be interned in places away from our communities. We have done this before, in times of war, and we have the facilities to do this.

We are at war with this ideology and every

person who reads this page should know this.

We are not talking about thousands of people, we are talking about hundreds. If these young men do not respond to our way of life then they should be deported to the lands of their families, despite the fact that they may be Australian citizens ; they shall forfeit that priviledge.

Muslim leaders such as Dr Jamal Rifi know this and they work, within their sphere of influence to dilute the hatred for all things Western. This hatred is not new, it is centuries old, it is fed by conspiracy theories, the most powerful being that of the Israeli Six Day War. Arab nations contend to this day, that US, UK, French and even Australian soldiers fought alongside the Israelis in bringing about Arab defeat !! Simply because to admit that Israel was able to defeat the Arab armies on its own is too shameful to admit…..so the myths and the lies compound and today’s Muslim youth believe that they are the targets of a global, western conspiracy to destroy Islam.

They are taught this relentlessly ; they believe it because it is a powerful idea….and ideas can rarely be killed or destroyed. The fact that it is untrue is irrelevant, even inconvenient.

Our communities will never be safe from this terror until we confront it on its own terms and take drastic action to save ourselves. Actions such as internment, such as deporting those who will not be a part of our communities, such as implementing seriously rigid filtration systems on our immigration programmes and demanding that our leaders stop the ‘ nonsense ‘ about community cohesion etc., and accept the reality of what we face and talk to our communities in real terms about the threats we face and devise sensible ways to deal with it.

Surely Australia is capable of this ??

Cranky Lizard knows that Australia has highly efficient security agencies, they are bloody good at what they do, they work hard and many times they make their own luck !

Let it go and your shortcut icon will instantly be there. If you get it wrong don’t worry, your computer has brains and will put it back where it was anyway. Quality entries this year in the Matthew Flinders Art Prize at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre The number and quality of entries this year in the Matthew Flinders Art Prize at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, have taken a big leap.

More and higher quality art works than before have been entered in the 19th annual prestigious signature art event for the Centre, which runs July 14 - August 2.

The MFAP organising committee this year changed the exhibition to an open competition, reflecting the trend in other art prizes around the country. So all mediums are equal for judging for the fantastic first prize of $5000, second prize of $2000 and two Highly Commended $500 awards. There is also a $500 people’s Choice Prize which will be awarded at the end of the exhibition.

Local sponsors have supported the prize generously this year, in particular the Bribie RSL, Caboolture Sports Club and Victory Press.

The Arts Centre has always found room and space to hang/display every artwork entered. Sometimes, this has meant clearing out its other spaces if the Mathew Flinders Gallery is full. Organisers are braced for a big challenge to fit them all this year.

Council hands down Budget Council handed down its budget on 2 June and it’s great to see the investment Council is making in the region. Each year all aspects of our operations are reviewed to see if any areas can be streamlined or expanded while keeping our rates as low as possible.

Investment will be seen with the upgrade of playgrounds, footpaths, road rehabilitation and drainage works and I look forward to the continued growth and improvements across the Division.

Some of the projects in Beachmere include: Sandy Street, Beachmere: Drainage Outfall Design Investigation Review of coastal surveys and investigation of alternative coastal outfall design that minimises disruption to coastal sand movement.

“Material Matters’’ touring textile art exhibition by Brisbane artist Kay Lawrence Matthew Flinders Art Gallery, Bribie Island Community Arts Centre, August 12 – September 7.

Material Matters is the culmination of Brisbane artist Kay S Lawrence’s PhD research into the use of “women’s work’’ and digital technologies to address global ecological and social issues.

The artist has explored “women’s work’ needlework techniques and other textile techniques (m)aligned with females, including embroidery, knitting, weaving, crochet, and binding - and the inherent materiality of these mediums beyond their obvious aesthetic attributes.

Her artworks and installations, created from found objects, handmade textiles, and digital photography, are tactile and engaging. Material Matters reflects on the process, meanings and potential

strength contained in textile traditions and processes.

In front of over 100 family friends Aaron and Sonia shared their vows, one thing was for sure, though‌. no one made a sound while we all listened to both pledge their love for each other for the rest of their lives.

BEING ABLE

By Cathy McGillivray As I age I love that seemingly small things can make me feel, well I guess the phrase I’m searching for is “chuffed”. Things like noticing someone younger than you not being able to do something such as lift a thingaby or move a whatzit and you easily stack thingabys on whatzits without any effort involved. Move over Wonder Woman, keep your golden lasso in its holster cause I’m here!

I love to lift heavy things and then put them back down. Crazy I know, but it is what I love to do. I get a buzz from being able to lift heavier things nearly every time I try, and then not put them down as often as I did last time. I get a big buzz from being able to lift heavier things than women younger than me and a hugely large buzz from lifting more than males younger than me. This is one tiny reason I like to exercise, not the most important reason but one on my long list of why I push heavy weights.

I do this crazy pushing and pulling in a controlled environment made for such craziness, but I know that by doing this, I will have the strength to do other far more important things out in the real world.

Really important things like pushing a half tonne motorbike backwards, up an incline, into a parking spot without needing help. Ohhhh you don’t think that’s important? Well you can’t look impressive in that situation! Nope there is definitely no “coolness” involved sitting on your motorbike as your husband has to shove you backwards because your legs aren’t strong enough to move even a small motorbike. This happened last weekend to a much younger woman who exercises several times a week but doesn’t do “heavy weighty stuff”. I guess she hasn’t heard that all the

cardioing and bouncing doesn’t help when you need strength.

Being strong is important for as many different reasons as there are hundreds and thousands on fairy bread. Being strong may mean being able to comfortably open a jar, or it could mean be able to easily lift a grandchild. It can mean being able to climb a mountain or a set of stairs, and yes climbing does need cardio fitness, but if your legs aren’t strong enough to lift your body upwards you can be as cardio fit as you like, but climbing that mountain ain’t going to happen any time soon.

But that’s okay because you don’t plan to want to climb a mountain, push a motorbike backwards uphill and your family well they are all too old to need lifting….. or are they?

If your relative needed help getting up from the floor or from falling off a pushbike or tripping over a non-existent object on the floor (yes, okay, I do that a lot) would you be able to help them get up? If you fell down would you be able to get yourself up?

Being strong is about being ABLE. ABLE to do whatever it is you want to do, when you want to or need to do it, and if you aren’t ready for that day, then when that day comes around, what will you do? Call on someone who is stronger than you? How will you feel if that person is 10 years older than you?

It is never too late to start and as I have said a quizillion times you do not have to wait until a Monday. You can start any time, any day. Being able to start is a privilege that many people would kill for, being able to be able is wished for by so many people, so don’t waste another day, because tomorrow might be the day you find you are in an uphill backwards carpark.

Senior Gentle Exercises Circuit Time Before You Start!

Use a stable high backed chair. Please wear Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them.

Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

The exercises below can be done as a circuit combining exercises to rest one area of your body while exercising another.

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

SHOULDER & LEGS Use a stable chair and water bottles or small hand weights Stand in front of the chair with a weight/bottle in each hand and your thumbs touching. Keeping your thumbs touching lift your hands towards your chin while sticking your elbows out from your body Lower weights down to starting position while keeping your thumbs touching. Repeat 10 times Sit and rest your shoulders and raise one leg at a time extending your lower leg and pointing your toes Repeat 10 times each leg Repeat shoulder exercise again when leg exercise is finished – repeat both exercises 3 times if possible.

FRONT LIFT, SHIN STRENGTHENER, PILES SQUATS Sit upright on a stable chair with your shoulders back and your feet slightly apart. Rest a cushion or ball on your legs and lift to shoulder height slowly then return to just above your legs – do not let it rest on your legs Repeat 10 times Rest your arms, keeping your heels on the ground lift your toes toward your body slowly. Lower toes back towards floor slowly – repeat 15 times Stand up from chair and using the back of the chair or a kitchen bench for support stand with your feet as wide as you comfortably can, make sure you are stable on your feet. Squat down as low as you comfortably can without raising your toes or heels from the ground Repeat slowly, only do as many slow squats as you feel comfortable doing up to 15. Sit and repeat all exercises 3 times if possible.

FLAMINGOS, BALANCE AND TOES Stand with one hand resting lightly on top of a stable chair or the kitchen bench to help with your balance Flamingo - Stand firmly on one leg and slowly lift your other foot behind you only to the height of your calf – slowly return to the ground and swap legs - Repeat 10 times each leg Arm/Leg raises - Stand firmly on one leg and raise the other leg out to the front while lifting the opposite arm as high as you comfortably can – slowly bring back to start and swap sides – Repeat 10 times each leg/arm Toeing The Line – slide each foot slowly to the front and place heel against your other foots toes. Try not to step – slide, keeping in as straight a line as possible. Continue for 10 slides each foot Repeat all three exercises 3 times if possible.

CLOCK REACH AND SIDE LEG RAISES Stand behind a stable chair or beside a kitchen bench Clock Reach - Use the chair for balance with one hand and lift one foot off the floor. Standing on one leg swing your arm backwards and forwards while keeping your body still 15 times Swap leg and arms and repeat 15 times Side Leg Raise - Balance with both hands on back of chair and lift one leg out to the side slowly. Make sure your body stays completely still and doesn’t “counterbalance” your leg.

Repeat the lift 15 times and swap legs. Rest

GOLDEN AGE DAY RESPITE CENTRE CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

At Golden Age Day Respite Centre, we have been providing care and social support for older people in our community for 30 years.

Our service is subsidized by the Commonwealth Home Support Program to aid with social and physical activity to those who choose to remain at home in the care of a loved one or on their own.

We support guests from Monday to Thursday each week so that older members of our community can benefit from wellness and memory enhancing activities such as Exercise classes, Trivia, Quizzes, Bingo, bowls & golf, Picnics, BBQs and Concerts.

Our program has for the past 30 years relied on the support of volunteers to assist us with social activities for our elderly clients. Our volunteers have traditionally given us support for a few hours a week between 9am & 3pm on a day of their choosing. Volunteers can assist for as little as 3 hours a week and will be supporting clients in a social way while they participate in the various activities we provide.

We are wishing to commence a new program where volunteers who wish to engage with

the elderly in our community can connect with specific guests of our service to provide them with companionship, support and friendship once a week for an hour or two each visit. If you believe this is something you would be interested in participating in please contact us for more information.

We can also assist those who are required to volunteer as a condition of their Centrelink payments.

• Twenty-five percent of middle-aged Australian men have nobody outside their immediate family to rely on; • Forty-five percent say they were not satisfied with the number of friends and acquaintances they have; • Sixty percent don’t feel they are part of a community.”

Isolation, disconnection and a sense of being a burden to others significantly increase the risk of suicide and developing maladaptive coping strategies. It is in the best interests of our society for all members to be as healthy as possible both physically and mentally. So what is the solution? It is heartening that a growing number of men are very willing to seek professional services when they begin to struggle, but for those who find this difficult, there are other avenues to pursue.

The rise in popularity of the Men’s Shed movement would seem to indicate exactly that. According to the Men’s Shed website, the “primary activity is the provision of a safe and friendly environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace in their own time in the company of other men. A major objective is to advance the well-being and health of their male members.”

There are other organisations such as Mates in Construction targeting men in the construction industry and Mates4Mates targeting wounded, injured or ill current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel. Both of which draw on the idea of “mateship” and encourage men to support men when they are struggling.

On a day to day basis, we know that exercise, good nutrition and adequate sleep all play a vital role in mental health by keeping the brain healthy and ensuring adequate levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Get out there, play sport, join a club and engage with other men in healthy pursuits – it’s good for your brain and wellbeing.

Health and Ambulance Services Minister Cameron Dick said $131.8 million has been allocated over four years as an initial investment to enhance Logan, Caboolture and Ipswich public hospitals, situated in South-East Queensland’s (SEQs) growth corridor.

“The SEQ Hospitals Package includes $19.6 million over two years to expand the Emergency Department (ED) at Caboolture Hospital,” Mr Dick said.

$19M for Caboolture Hospital ED expansion More than $19 million over two years has been committed to expanding the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department (ED), along with funding to begin planning a redevelopment of the busy hospital.

There is a growing trend in the struggle men have to feel connected and valuable in society. Men frequently talk about trying to find ways to meet the needs of partners, families and work, and not knowing where they “fit.” There are alarming Australian Bureau of Statistics (2015) indicating that men have three times higher rate of suicide than women. In addition to this, they are two times more likely to consume alcohol at a risky level and to abuse other substances. The Beyondblue website states “research has revealed that:

Mr Ryan and Mr Williams praised the Government for delivering on much-needed infrastructure.

“These redevelopments will need to be a staged approach to address the immediate shortfall, but also cater for long term needs,” Mr Ryan said.

“Planning for future redevelopment inthese hospitals is planning for the growth in these communities that we know is going to happen.

“This funding will meet the urgent need to increase the ED capacity, facilitating better service delivery and reducing waiting times and overcrowding.

“The expansion will provide fourteen new treatment spaces, four consultation rooms and one treatment room; almost doubling the current ED capacity.

“Works have already commenced on this important project, with an expected completion date of December 2018.”

“The Caboolture Hospital has served locals well, but this is a rapidly growing community and the facility is currently operating beyond its original capacity.

Mr Dick said the SEQ Hospitals Package also includes $112.2 million for detailed planning and preparatory works for proposed future redevelopments at Caboolture, Logan and Ipswich hospitals.

“2015-16, Caboolture Hospital’s ED provided services for 54,430 presentations in an ED built to service under 45,000 presentations.

“These hospitals are all serving growing populations with increasing health needs.

The redevelopment of these hospital will proceed to the next phase of a Detailed

Business Case development,” he said.

“An infrastructure downpayment to enhance capacity and services of $103.2 million has been allocated across 2017-21 to assist in the preparatory works for these projects.

“Early investments are likely to include land acquisition, earthworks, car parking reconfiguration, and changes to buildings, walkways and paths for safety and comfort during the redevelopments.”

“To service the population growth, we anticipate the need for roughly 130 new treatment spaces at Caboolture Hospital (from 260) but that will all be considered in the detailed planning process in 2017-18.

Mr Dick said Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan and Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams had strongly advocated for improved health services for their communities.

“The State Government is committed to making Queenslanders among the healthiest people in the world by 2026 and this means improving access to quality and safe healthcare in all its different forms and settings.”

Mr Williams said not only was the State Government improving healthcare by delivering better infrastructure and services, it was also employing more health staff after the Newman-Nicholls LNP Government took its axe to the health system and cut 629 nursing and midwifery jobs in the Metro North Hospital and Health Service (MNHHS), which covers Caboolture Hospital.

“Since coming to government, 242 doctors and 812 nurses and midwifes have been added to MNHHS,” he said.

“Our Government works for all of Queensland and is building local healthcare facilities in parts of Queensland ignored by the LNP for decades.”

Don and Phil Everly were born to Midwestern country stars Ike and Margaret Everly of Shenandoah, Iowa in the late 1930’s. The two brothers performed on the family radio show throughout their childhood and as teenagers they left for Nashville where they were hired as song writers. Later the duo recorded the hit song Bye Bye Love (Number Two U.S., 1957) which established the Everly Brothers style of close country harmonies over a rocking beat.

Rolling Stone magazine referred to the duo as “the most important vocal duo in rock” The magazine further commented on the brothers enduring influence “their close expressive harmonies is evident in the work of British Invasion bands like the Beatles and of folk-oriented acts such as Simon and Garfunkel”.

Fast forward over 50 years to the present where two well-known local artists in their own right- Darby Burger and Rob Rushton, have teamed up to bring the smooth sounds of the Everly Brothers back to life in the Walk Right Back Tribute Show.

Darby Burger and Rob Rushton’s story share some striking similarities to that of the Everly brothers. The two artists began playing together as teenagers in a band some 50 odd years ago, as Darby explained “Rob actually taught me my first chord on the guitar when we were about 13 years old, we used

to play the Everly’s songs in a band together back then” The two performers went their separate ways for several years then after about twenty years doing their own thing, they happened to catch up. The re-united friends began working on the concept for the Walk Right Back show back in 2015.

Darby said how the original inception for the idea came about, “we were working together on an open mike night, and we usually did an opening set, we often found ourselves covering the famous brothers”. From there the pair committed some time to the project and 15 months later, started to market the idea.

Caboolture RSL Marketing Manager Kent Parry said of the show “Darby has played at our Club for many years, he is a true professional, Darby approached me about the Everly Show and I jumped at the opportunity, the concept has a great appeal” The show is to be held in the Caboolture RSL Banksia on Thursday August 17th from 6pm. The audience can sing along with famous Everly hits such as walk right back, wake up little Susie, all I have to do is dream and many many more.

The ticket price includes dinner and the show is served up with a delicious two course meal at an unbeatable $27.50.

Remember when you couldn’t wait to get your new bundle of fur home and cuddle it, feed it, play with it, love it and have unconditional love in return?

What happens when your beautiful bundle of fur gets old? It happens to many of us.

All too often we see a rise in the surrender or dumping of animals because they are old or sick, thus overloading the already at capacity animal welfare organisations.

Many get euthanised because they may start costing us lots of money at the Vets, because we, as fur parents, fail to recognise the change in their needs which is crucial to improving and increasing their quality of life.

Senior pets are our precious family members that have given us so much pleasure throughout their years and as they age, like humans, they develop different nutritional and health care needs.

Having a good relationship with your Vet is vital. Find one that is sympathetic to you and your pets’ needs. This will make visits to the Vet a more enjoyable experience for all concerned.

Many effects of aging are common in people and pets. As we age we might gain weight, get fatigued during activities, have diminishing eyesight and suffer joint pain.

According to Hills Pet Nutrition 80% of dogs over the age of 8 and 90% of cats over the age of 12 suffer Degenerative Joint Disease.

What is Degenerative Joint Disease? DJD in this case, refers to arthritis, which is gradual deterioration and inflammation of the joints.

The symptoms of DJD will vary as to the age of the pet, the severity of the disease and which joints are affected. Your pet may have difficulty getting up in the mornings, intermittent lameness, difficulty walking up and down stairs, jumping on the couch or in the car or stiffness when walking.

Genetic factors and injuries, for example Cruciate Ligaments and fractures can make your pet more prone to developing

arthritis in their senior years. Many pets are considered geriatric or senior from age 7, so regular check-ups are recommended to detect and manage disease early.

There are many ways to treat problems and a consult with your vet to discuss nutritional management, dietary supplements and medical treatments. Some veterinarians use a multi model approach alternative with the K-Laser and is very effective on inflammation, tissue healing and pain management.

During the winter months, it is important not to become lax with parasite and tick prevention. Make sure your pet has a warm comfortable bed and that bedding is washed regularly. Wash their food dishes after meals to prevent bacteria build up, which can make our fur babies sick. Like people, make sure your pet has a regular dental check-up and ask your vet about your pets’ nutritional needs for a healthy balanced diet. Keep your pet well groomed, as this will do more than keep your pet good looking. Regular brushing helps prevent those pesky knots which will pull on the skin, making your pet uncomfortable, it also helps bring out the natural oils in your pets’ fur and gives you a chance to inspect your pets body in case of any injury or skin condition which may be present and gone undetected.

Check your pets’ nails and if you are uncomfortable giving them a clip, your Veterinarian can help you out with this as well.

During the cooler weather, get your fur baby a nice, well-fitting jacket. This not only helps them to keep warm, but makes them look smart when you take them for their daily walk.

A few preventative measures like these, make for a much happier pet and they can live out their twilight years happily and comfortably.

Remember: Any concerns with your pets health, please consult your Veterinarian.

THE REIQ welcomes the State Government’s extension of the First Home Buyer Grant boost until December 2017, however the peak body is disappointed that the Government has refused to broaden the grant to include established homes in regional Queensland.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said regional Queensland property markets continued to struggle, with the housing oversupply one of the region’s biggest problems.

“We welcome the goal behind the First Home Buyer Grant, which is to stimulate jobs and this measure has been successful in the southeast corner, with the added benefit of additional supply moderating price growth where demand is strong.

“However, additional supply in regional Queensland is going to further slow these markets and make any price recovery much longer to come into effect,” she said.

Jobs Program: The REIQ also welcomes those measures designed to stimulate jobs in regional Queensland, where climbing unemployment is impacting on the community in devastating ways.

“Unemployment destabilises housing tenure and this uncertainty is damaging to the fabric of the community.

“The Government’s $200 million jobs program, Works for Queensland, delivered over the next two years into regional Queensland, will tackle the need for infrastructure in regional communities and also the unemployment issue head on and we applaud these efforts,” Ms Mercorella said.

Abolish Stamp Duty: The REIQ was disappointed this Government has chosen to ignore advice from a range of experts on abolishing stamp duty.

“Stamp duty is an onerous fiscal burden that stifles housing mobility and many experts are in agreement, including the Henry Tax Review, that stamp duty should be replaced,” Ms Mercorella said.

“When the cost of selling your house comes with an additional price tag of tens of thousands of dollars it gives many people pause.

“Empty nesters wait longer to downsize and young families wait longer to upsize and this creates inefficiencies in the housing market that are undesirable,” Ms Mercorella said.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said the real estate sector provided a significant revenue stream for the Government and employed around 50,000 Queenslanders.

“The Government should heed the advice of the experts when it comes to the health and well-being of this vital sector in the Queensland economy,” she said.

“The key pillars that underpin the real estate profession are fragile – jobs figures are soft, wages growth is flat and investors are facing tightened lending criteria.

“Real estate is facing considerable head winds and the Government needs to acknowledge these challenges and devise appropriate policy responses to ensure its continued growth,” she said.

$1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy delivers for Moreton Bay

The State Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy is set to deliver comprehensive support for Moreton Bay locals, from addressing homelessness to assisting homeownership. $96 million in new homes for Moreton Bay Minister for Health Cameron Dick, who is visiting Caboolture today, said the ten-year Queensland Housing Strategy was spearheaded by a construction jobs program that would revitalise housing across Moreton Bay. “Through the Queensland Housing Strategy, the State Government is investing $96.6 million to build 330 new homes in the Moreton Bay region over the next five years,” Mr Dick.

“This investment will see work for small, medium and large construction businesses, support 55 local jobs each year over the five years.

“These new, modern homes will better cater for the needs of vulnerable Queenslanders, especially seniors, people with disability and women and children escaping domestic and family violence.”

First Home Buyers Grants Treasurer Curtis Pitt said the State Government’s $20,000 Queensland First Home Owners’ Grant was helping tackle housing affordability.

More than 1,500 Moreton Bay locals had received a grant or made an application up until the 31 May 2017.

“In last year’s State Budget, I boosted the Queensland First Home Owners’’ Grant from $15,000 to $20,000,” Mr Pitt said.

“This is helping Queenslanders buy their first home while also supporting jobs in our building industry and related sectors.

“The grant was to end on 30 June but in last week’s Budget I provided $30 million to extend its availability to the end of December.

“The latest figures show 4,900 grants worth $98 million have been paid out since the program started in July last year.

“In addition, there are almost 500 applications for the grant being processed.”

Mr Pitt said the $20,000 Queensland First Home Owners’ Grant was available to help buy newly constructed houses or apartments up to the value of $750,000.

“I urge anyone considering buying their first home to look into the grant and make a decision before the end of the year,” he said.

Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan said the funding would support the women and men on the frontline of homelessness support to make a real difference.

“This $3.8 million in homelessness funding our Government is providing will make sure that homelessness services can continue to support the housing needs of the most vulnerable in our community,” Mr Ryan said.

‘The State Government’s $1.8 billion Queensland Housing Strategy is about much more than just building new homes.

“We know that access to safe, secure and affordable housing is critical to

employment and educational outcomes.

“Through this strategy, we are improving support and transforming services to open up better housing pathways for all Queenslanders,” he said.

Five-year homelessness agreements Member for Kallangur Shane King said the State Government was backing in the investment in housing and homelessness by supporting service providers with longer agreements.

“Working on the frontlines of homelessness is one of the toughest jobs in the state and the traditional practice of short-term funding agreements makes that job even tougher,” Mr King said.

“It’s difficult to attract and hire skilled, experienced staff if you can only offer 6 or 12 month contracts.

“But more fundamentally, you can’t build the skills and experience of the sector if all you can offer is short term employment.

“These longer agreements will give those people on the frontlines certainty around their jobs, allowing their organisations to better plan for the future.

“It’s about job security, it’s about funding certainty and it’s about providing a better outcome for vulnerable people in the Moreton Bay region.”

Member for Pumicestone Rick Williams said helping Queenslanders into housing provided families with security and also created jobs during construction.

“Every home built represents work for local tradies, including carpenters, electricians and plumbers,” Mr Williams said.

“That means security for local businesses and security for local families.

Leaving a Narcissist So, you have finally realised that your relationship is, to put it quite bluntly, crap.

Where to from here? Just leave, I hear you say? It’s not always that cut and dried. In fact, more times than not, it is the hardest thing you will ever do. Well-meaning family and friends looking at your life can and will say the most horrid things, but with the best intentions. It is always so easy for the person looking from the outside in, but to live it every single day is something that is so very hard to explain. No one can pin point the moment you have had enough.

Was it when you got accused of having an affair for the umpteenth time? Was it because you asked your partner for money to help pay a bill and got refused because hey after all, you earn money, use that. Was it when you walk in the door after a hard day and get yelled at? Was it when your partner told everyone how horrible you are, again and again? Was it when you realised your partner always seemed to know where you were and you couldn’t work out why?

Was it when you finally found a tracker in your car? Or was that just the last straw?

Or did you just get tired? Tired of being blamed for someone else’s insecurities and pretending it doesn’t hurt you.

If you are ‘lucky’ enough to have survived a Domestic Violence relationship, you can let it turn you into a horrible negative person or you can stay positive, and learn to get on with making a life for yourself. One which enriches those around you.

The Narcissist doesn’t realise that you have just had enough. You have always forgiven the bad behaviour in the hopes that this time, they finally mean it. But, once you have decided to go, no amount of pulling you back with gifts and yet more promises is going to make you stay, and so, if you are lucky enough to have your own hard-earned savings, you use that to pay bond on a rental that you hate, you buy a car that will never have your partner’s name on it, you pack up your belongings, your children and your pets and you leave.

Domestic Violence is not Gender Specific.

It affects both men and women and is not racially discriminative. Some are not so lucky to survive.

Some women with children are not lucky enough to escape completely. There are countless court dates to obtain an AVO, where you must face your abuser. There are the custody battles, access weekends, often there will be battles for child support.

Sometimes the children are abducted, and used as pawns in a sick and twisted way.

You may feel like you are being hunted.

There will always be someone who lets your now ‘ex’ know where you are, and sometimes they will come looking.

Sometimes they will bash on your door in the middle of the night demanding to talk to you. They may bombard you with phone calls and text messages, each one worse than the one before. They will try to destroy you in any way possible, after all, you were the one who destroyed their life. You were the one who destroyed their family and their dreams.

You try hard to live a life as normal as possible you but circumstances in life have the ability to change you in many ways. You still love them, and a part of you always will, but you have learned that sometimes it is better to walk away from situations and people that are not good for your mind and your soul. There will be days you just want to hide from the world and cry and other days when everything is

Learning to let go is one of the hardest things you will ever do. It takes time. Lots of time. For better or worse, Life will change you. It’s how you deal with it that matters.

Most importantly, take each day at a time and stop being so damned hard on yourself.

Remember the bruises heal; the mind and the heart take longer. So, give yourself time and shine as only you can.

Rotary International & world leaders commit $1 BILLION to end polio.

Barry Clark- Bribie Island Rotary Club Rotary Clubs around the world have been raising funds to rid the world of Polio for over 30 years.

Rotary worldwide has raised more than $1.7 BILLION to fight the disease since 1985.

Polio cases have been reduced from 265,000 each year around the world, to less than 20 cases worldwide today.

The Rotary Club of Bribie Island, and its many supporters, have played their part in this remarkable effort.

The long battle is almost won, but there still remain just a few cases of Polio around the world, and while even one case still exists , the whole world remains at risk an epidemic.

Bribie Rotarians George and Mary Grant attended this year’s Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, USA, where 24,000 Rotarians from more than 200 countries assembled.

With polio on the brink of eradication, Rotary International and donors from around the world, agreed last week to contribute a further $1 Billion to complete the global fight and end the paralyzing disease for ever.

These inspiring pledges of additional funds, made at the Rotary Convention in Atlanta, USA, last week, will drastically shrink the $1.5 billion funding gap that the partners of the Global Polio

already raised and spent by Rotary since 1985.

Bill Gates told the International gathering of 24,000 Rotarians that, starting 1 July, his foundation will extend its 2 -to-1 match to cover up to $50 million in donations raised

by Rotary for each of the next three years.

The match and donations to Rotary would add up to $150 million per year over the next three years, which will add a further $450 million to the fight.

Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said “ending polio would be one of the world’s greatest achievements.

Polio is the thing I spend the most time on. Every day I look at my email to see if we have a new case,” Gates said. “I’m very inspired to be part of this. I’m also very humbled.”

Small rural communities have much in common; predominant amongst these is that most people wave and smile at you and the main street will have at least two bush bashing Toyotas with their tray back full of dogs.

Nothing, just walked past my boots into the thick bush and disappeared ; as if I was not there.

No point in being outraged ; it is only a turtle. And, actually I thought it lacked a bit of class at that !

“ Yep. You do. You are just frightened of me, that’s all . “ husked the polka dotted log.

Thought to myself, ‘ bugger this, I am not going to be scared of a polka dotted log, I am bush bloke and I am sober, so in we go !!

“ I like your blue boots, and I can see at night, you need pink eyes, mate, then you will be way in front of the bloody mob. “ Bunyip rustled his voice.

“ Look I don’t know what you are, but I am not scared of you, I just can’t work you out. “ I said using my best Army voice.

And, then he was gone ! Not a splash, just a gentle glide, rippled the moonlight water ; the pink eyes popped up from the silver water and one winked…………….then gone.

I know. But if you are quiet, and believe in the spirits and stories of the Australian Bush, you might be lucky enough to see and talk to a bunyip.

These are working dogs, from surrounding sheep or cattle stations and they have come to town for the experience of seeing other working dogs on other Toyotas. A social occasion of special note. Ears fully pricked, eyes intensely observing, and, as you should know, dogs laugh with their tails ; so there was much laughing happening, but no barking, working dogs rarely bark except when at home and the arrival of a stranger ‘ sets them off ! ‘ All main streets in rural communities have parks which include a rotunda, a small brick toilet block crouched in a far corner, a couple of old wagons or steam engines, beautiful trees festooned with huge mobs of raucous corellas, most of them hanging upside down, and a very important notice board naming the park after ‘ Bob ‘, or ‘ Wally’, or ‘ Matron Heather ‘.

Aboriginal cultural centres are often located near the park or the Council Chambers and they also contain some marvellous stories and colours of the tribal people who lived on these lands prior to European arrival. Much can be learned about the local district from these centres ; stories of the song lines and the dream time, images a sharp observer can see reflected in the land as you move slowly about.

Far West Queensland begins to run out of rivers the further you travel West. After the Warrego and the Paroo there is not much until you arrive at the Coopers Basin and the Georgina bordering on the Northern Territory. One can imagine the tired, dusty eyes of the adventurous men hungrily searching for the line of trees, which is the sign of a water course, as they moved their exploration trains of camels, horses, goats further and further West.

For a number of reasons I recently visited the Warrego River at Cunnamulla.

Apart from where it is held back by manmade weirs, the Warrego is, in normal times, a series of long water holes ; it is a ferocious beast during flooding and the town of Cunnamulla has built levees round itself for protection ; and the levee works, but, the Warrego in flood is a fearsome sight, accompanied by a hissing, rushing roar of brown water, foam, trees, horses, cattle, sheep, flood gates and anything else not tied down.

If you are in the way, you will not escape.

Today, the Warrego is a breeze rippled, long length of water stretching away to the North on my right hand and backed up by the weir on my left hand.

They like blue boots and are very cool. But they pick you ; you can’t pick them.

And, don’t worry about the sparrows flying out of your bum – it only happens once !!

Although, there are road signs, near the river, warning about turtles crossing !!

“ Well, I am a bloody bunyip and you are the first human I have spoken too.”

Thought to myself, ‘ bloody hell, I am talking to a bunyip, who is going to believe me ?’

River systems in far Western Queensland create their own micro-climates. The body of cool water gently draws air down which then flows sideways into the gums and bushes along the banks; cooling breezes touch your cheeks like angels’ breath on hot days, softly swaying the tops of the trees providing endless entertainment for the galahs and corellas as they cling to the moving branches, loudly telling each other how good it is ; and, it surely is a remaining and constant pleasure for those of us who love the bush and who understand the language it softly speaks to you.

“ Yeah well, I haven’t spoken to any bunyips either, so we are equal. What the bloody hell are you doing here ? “

About 20 minutes passed whilst I sat and wondered at the beauty of this place and how lucky I was to be able to be here, when a husky, rustling voice, just off to my right said : “ What’s your story ? “

Sunlight sparkles off the breeze rippled water giving the wonderful impression of a river holding flashing lights…..for you.

Startled, I looked about, saw a log, well I thought it was a log, but the pale moonlight showed soft yellow polka dots about the size of an emu’s egg and pink eyes………….looking at me !

I am sitting on a black cracked, mud bank staring at green weeds floating on the surface and a fresh water turtle, which is staring back at me!!

Being a cool dude, I remain seated on the tailgate, casually swinging my legs and trying to stop the sparrows from flying out of my bum !!

Turtle talking is skill I lack, but when this bloke arrived on the bank by my boots I felt compelled to say ;

“ I don’t have a story, mate. “ I said, staring across the water, away from the polka dotted log.

There are also some very cheeky magpies in Cunnamulla. They have learnt the guilt stare when it comes to food. Sitting in the Park, on a bench eating a hamburger, you can be quickly joined by two or three magpies giving you the guilty stare, like ‘ Where is my bit ? ‘ I give them the beetroot. They really love the beetroot !! They look at it, look back at you with demanding eyes, as if to say ‘ What is that, not the bloody beetroot trick again.’

“ I bloody live here. This is my place, what the bloody hell are you doing here ? “ We talked for a while, I found out about how bunyips live and how they keep going, how old they are and stuff

Amongst these soft breezes, small leaves are given the wonderful gift of flight.

I wanted to see the Warrego in moonlight ; this meant early morning travel North from Cunnamulla for a couple of hours until I could roll my vehicle onto the bank, switch the motor off and sit quietly on the tailgate captivated by the ribbon of moonlight on the water and the plopping of something, probably yellow belly, in the water. In this country, in moonlight, you can see for long way and the river unfolded silently to the North and somewhere, because I am a hopeless romantic, I imagined I could hear the sound of horses, wagons, whips and yelling muffled in the background……

Tomorrow I shall be back in Cunnamulla ; in the main street with bush Toyota’s full of dogs laughing with their tails. Beautiful – but I have a bunyip for a mate, who else does ??

By Johann Koelmeyer Australia’s small to medium enterprises (SMEs) make up an impressive 97% of all businesses in the country, and employ 4.7 million people and second only to the US, Australia endures the highest rate of ransomware attack in the world?

Ransomware is a concerted campaign by cybercriminals to gain and “lock” access to a business’s information. Paying a ransom to the cybercriminals is the only way to regain access to your information.

The most worrying trend is the targeting of small and medium sized businesses (SMEs). You may wonder what the strategy behind that is – surely large corporates are more lucrative targets?

They certainly are, but they also have the resources, and the risk profile, to develop and deploy consistent, yet expensive, cyber security protocols. In other words, entire departments are dedicated to mitigating the risk of online security breaches. SMEs on the other hand have to make difficult decisions around cost versus perceived risk, and most do not perceive themselves to be at exceptional risk of online security breaches, and therefore do not spend the resources to protect themselves. This is a mistake.

In 2016, the number of ransomware attacks was 172% more than the entire year of 2015. Ransomware attacks in 2017 increased exponentially to the 2016 attack statistics with just the recent WannaCry and Petya global

attacks. Hackers are targeting more and more individuals and small businesses in addition to large corporates. The “Ransomware Trade” is a lucrative and well-organised global business in itself.

According to Intel McAfee, around 16,000 new ransomware code changes are created each day, therefore antivirus companies are always playing catch-up in releasing updates to their customers.

Let’s take a systematic look at why SMEs are being targeted, and what small business owners can do about it:

“ The Village ” – a journey with refugees

The Village, a play performed by the La Boite Theatre Company, explores the stories of six people. Six refugees.

All telling their own stories of how they have escaped to Australia in their time of need. The shows six performers; Ngoc Phan, Arwin Arwin, Cieavash Arean, Joyce Joyce Jattu Taylor, Lili Sanchez and Silva A Sal, all shared their heartwrenching stories on the stage to raise awareness for their cause; changing the refugee policy. The current refugee policy is that any refugee that arrives in Australia after July 2013, will never be granted citizenship or permanent residency in Australia, and those that arrive before then may not sponsor their family members.

Through this small group of individuals, they have survived the conflicts of the Vietnamese War, ISIS, the Iran-Israel Conflict, the Liberian Civil War, the Chilean Dictatorship, and the Sharia Law.

Educate your child about not sharing food at school and the important health reasons why not.

Nurturing our children’s bodies and brains with healthy foods is one of the best things you can do for your growing child.

Xbox evolution!

We all love the holidays. Days lounging around in front of tv playing the latest Xbox but have we ever actually asked any questions like where did it come from, how many new versions there.

We’re going to answer those questions.

Xbox was created and is owned by Microsoft. Not so shocking is it but when it was first introduced is; November 15th, 2001. The original Xbox’s competitors were Sony’s PlayStation 2, Sega’s Dreamcast and Nintendo’s GameCube.

The next Xbox, Xbox 360 was released in November 2005 and its competitors were Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii. It was officially unveiled on MTV on May 12th, 2005.

Phil said it would be released in the 2017 holidays and that it would start shipping worldwide on November 7th, 2017 for $499. Still got plenty of time to save up for the latest Xbox.

Bribie Island State High School Student in top 6 in Queensland for Rostrum Voice of Youth.

Congratulations to Alexis Thomas a year ten student at Bribie Island State High School who competed in the senior division of the state final of Rostrum Voice of Youth on Saturday 1st July in Brisbane. This is a national public speaking competition open to high school students and is now in its forty-third year.

Alexis won the Sunshine Coast regional final and the South Queensland final and talked her way into the state final with her speech titled ‘The Lottery of Life’.

Matisee Reed from Cairns and the runner up was Helena Blankestyn from Logan City. Alexis Thomas from Bribie Island State High School presented her speech on the topic ‘The Net Worth’. This is only her second year in the competition and it was an outstanding achievement to get to the final six competitors in the state.

As a year ten student she was competing against some year twelve students with much more public speaking experience.

Much of what makes a great public speaker is experience and confidence and Alexis has demonstrated that she is well on the way there.

Rostrum received over five hundred entries from across the state. The competition is now down to the final six competitors in both the junior and senior divisions. Alexis will be competing with students from Cairns, Townsville, Rockhampton and Brisbane in the state final. One winner from each division will represent Queensland in the national final to be held in Brisbane later in July.

The dedicated and enthusiastic teachers in the English department at Bribie Island State High School have coached students to a formidable standard in public speaking.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING SOILS AIN’T SOILS PT.12 Last article I touched base on the importance of the microbial life in the soil once again and made special reference of how molasses can be used as a diluted tonic for lawns and gardens. I also mentioned that as a matter of interest grubs take a dislike to molasses, so its possible to treat the beneficial bacteria in the turf root zone with tonics containing molasses and possibly controlling lawn grub infestations as well, so a win, win situation, can be had if the correct dose and timing has been achieved.

I have mentioned a few times over the last twelve months in my articles about the importance of sustainable gardening practices and to add to that fact, I have as a result, many times circled like a shark on this subject.

I have mentioned the importance of sustaining the microbial life in the your soil profile by using less intensive applications of fertilisers and herbicides by implementing and focussing on applications of rich organic composts and composted manures while incorporating home made worm tonics and microbe brews to try and re-establish the beneficial microbe populations in your soil profile over time.

On a more holistic level, us humans, also rely on microbial activity in our own bodies to function at its best and in particular our gut system. Sometimes after we have taken a strong course of antibiotics to treat an infection, we may have inadvertently wiped out our own good beneficial bacteria in the gut also. So those who know this and who have managed to successfully repopulate your gut from live beneficial probiotic bacteria contained in some organic strains of yoghurt or fermented foods, can probably attest to the benefits from transitioning from a totally sluggish body to being able to perform at your optimum with feelings of good health and vitality once again. So in actual fact, like the plants and soil in nature, the microbes are part of our own make up and live in a symbiotic relationship within our own body system too.

Now back to the plant world then, the beneficial bacteria and fungi in the soil can live in a symbiotic relationship with the plant roots and work together to feed each other so they can survive as one living unit. If we consume meat and vegetables and fruits that look like meat vegetables or fruits but seem devoid of flavour or never seem to ripen successfully, then the cause could be that the food has lost its mineral and or nutritional component during the intensive farming cycle. Then if our vegetables are devoid or lacking of certain nutrients then how can our bodies absorb the required vital nutrients needed to function?

And then the cycle begins once again, never mind any toxic chemical residues that these fruits may contain.

Gordonia axillaris or The Fried Egg Tree

This is one of my favourite Autumn to Winter flowering trees indeed.

The Gordonia axillaris has gone through a couple of name classifications of late and hence now being referred to as: Polyspora axillaris, but due to the fact it is still sold and marketed by most nurseries as Gordonia, I have therefore referred to it as the well known and ever so handsome, Gordonia axillaris.

The Gordonia grows to a small tree up to 5mt tall and tends to form a lovely dome shape in habit. The bark is decorative and the flowers and buds are similar to the Camellia as the two are related, the foliage is glossy green with mildly serrated leaf margins on the tips and like the Camellias, they prefer mildly acidic well drained soils for optimum growth, which is why they grow well here on the coast on Bribie Island and surrounds. Gordonia generally flower in autumn, but can have extended flowering periods throughout the winter months as new buds are formed constantly to replace the flowers being dropped and there are a few specimens on Bribie still profusely flowering and swarming with bees as I write this article today in late June. Now their most unglamorous common name, the fried egg plant, is because their beautiful large white flowers with their vivid yellow stamens fall from the tree intact and lay on the floor forming a carpet resembling eggs being cooked sunny side up.

WINTER WARMING Jewels Of July

Well on my rounds this month, it was pleasing to note that despite the damp weather conditions and the colder change in temperatures that winter brings us, it was a joy see all the winter flowering plants that take your breath away and brighten up our environment in what would otherwise be an ordinary time of year for gardening, so I have included a couple of winter warming flowering jewels this issue.

I was particularly gob smacked when attending a regular client of mine for their general gardening requirements when I saw their variegated Bougainvillea vine that we let grow this year to creep and drape over some feature rocks in the garden. On this fine sunny winter morning it was a sight to behold as the colourful terminal bracts were drooping like wisteria blooms over the rock faces in the landscape. I have included a picture below for inspiration and to hopefully warm your spirits too!

While on the subject of enjoying winter warming flowers, its not possible to resist the Pyrostegia venusta or the common orange trumpet vine that covers every square inch of your fence in masses of bright orange blooms in mid winter.

Interestingly to note the genus name Pyrostegia, is from Greek origin and refers to the colour of the flowers- (Pyro, means flame and stege, means covering) and the species name ‘venusta,’ means pleasing and pleasing it is to the eyes indeed!

Recipes of the world

Heat oven to 240C/220C fan/gas 9. In a food processor, This Month is a British combine the flour, eggs, milk, mustard and some salt and recipe... next month we pepper, blitz until smooth, then leave to rest for 30 mins. have a Chinese recipe.

Pour the oil into a metal roasting tin about 30 x 23cm and 7.5cm deep. Brush the oil all over the sides and bottom, then place in the oven. When the roasting tin is very hot and smoking, place the sausages inside, evenly spread out, and cook for 5 mins.

Ingredients 140g plain flour 3 eggs 300ml milk 2 tsp Dijon mustard 2 tbsp vegetable oil 8 Cumberland sausages 8 sage leaves 4 rosemary sprigs

Give the rested batter a stir and pour into the really hot tin – take care as it may spit. Quickly sprinkle over the sage leaves and rosemary, then place in the middle of the oven. Do not open the door for 25 mins, then check – if needed, cook for a further 5-10 mins. Cook until puffed up and brown and the batter is completely cooked through. Serve straight from the dish.

For those of you who witnessed the disjointed Wallabies plough their way through the first three Rugby Test Matches of the 2017 season against, Fiji, Scotland and Italy, you would be excused for thinking that you have just watched 3 amateur ‘A’ Grade Saturday rugby games. There is no doubt about the urgency and intent within the Wallabies players as individuals, however the inconsistencies and lack of discipline and leadership within the forwards and backs is unacceptable at this professional level.

Perhaps Australian rugby needs a serious independent review to grow Rugby in Australia and demonstrate to our world leading rugby neighbour, New Zealand that the we are worthy of a place in a new Australian and New Zealand Super Provincial Rugby Series. Congratulations to all the Australians who were finally issued with their 2018 Commonwealth Games Tickets. $150k in infrastructure grants available for local clubs Local sport and recreation clubs are urged to apply for funding of the Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces program.

Applications are now open for sports clubs to apply for a grant up to $150,000 to upgrade or build new infrastructure or facilities.

Member for Pumicestone, Rick Williams said $15 million total funding is available to local sport and recreation organisations through these programs.

“If there are any clubs out there who need better lighting, improved fields or new change facilities to encourage more female players to get involved, I encourage them start preparing their applications now.

“Our local community sports clubs have had some great projects funded under these grants and I encourage clubs to start preparing applications now” Mr Williams said.

“We’re proud to be able to provide more opportunities for Queenslanders to participate in sport and active recreation at the grassroots level—to get more people

outdoors, staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle,” He said

By Cheryl Williams Well hasn’t the weather really been put on for us over the past few weeks which means it’s been great fishing and lots of fish being caught. The crabs have dropped off for the winter and not too many being caught throughout the passage. But we all know that saying You won’t catch a crab in a month that doesn’t have an R in it. The whiting and Dart are certainly out and about on the surfside with several different locations 1st Lagoon, 2nd Lagoon as well as the campsites which has been great for our campers you will need to get yourself some preserved beach worms and Pippies to catch a feed the anglers have also said that they are catching plenty of Whiting at the Beacons. Bream are certainly starting to feel the cold plenty being caught at Avon Wrecks, Banksia Canals, White Patch, Bongaree and Red Beach make sure you use prawns and Live Blood Worms. We have seen several Tailor starting to come up the passage and being caught at the Bribie Bridge pilchards being the best bait. Flathead in Ningi Creek & White Patch with the odd few being caught on the surfside we are finding that the bait to use is mullet gut and squid. We have also seen some great snapper being caught at Sandstone Point and The Ripples grab some cuttlefish for bait. Mackerel have been caught at the Bird Cage with pilchards being the best bait.

Lines for tailor fishing in the 4 to 6 kg range are more than sufficient for fish likely to range to 1 kg with the average being much smaller. Gangs of 3 x 3/0 hooks are a good option for use with pilchards and also allow main line traces to be used rather than wire trace. This results in many more strikes and hook ups than if wire is used but be aware the occasional bite off will occur, probably from a second fish striking at a swivel of piece of bait sliding up your line.

Tailor Fishing Tips

Larger fish should be targeted with a minimum 6 kg line up to 10kg being preferred for very large fish, and hook sizes from 5/0 to 7/0 to suit your bait fished as two hook gangs or single hooks.

Tailor are a predatory fish and can often be observed “chopping” into schools of hapless baitfish. Primarily found in rivers, bays, surf and around rocks in close offshore waters the tailor is at home in almost any area with good tidal run and nearby clean deep water. Tailor can be extremely aggressive and it’s not uncommon for tailor to take baits only centimetres smaller than themselves.

Smaller fish are most commonly encountered in rivers and bays where these choppers present excellent light game opportunities taking baits and lures readily and performing jumps trying to throw hooks.

These smooth water fish can be best targeted using baits such as blue and west Australian pilchards. The beauty of pilchards is, when attacked by a tailor the resulting head shakes and biting spread pieces of the pillie like a natural burley keeping the other fish in the school excited and in your area.

From jetties and anchored boats liberal amounts of burley fed out into the current will attract these fish and bring them onto the bite. When they begin taking lines your dispersed baits should be sufficient to keep them interested with additional burley only required if the fish go quiet.

Surf and rock areas will produce a better class of fish with 1 kg specimens being average and fish to 5kg and bigger being encountered occasionally.

Here the use of pilchards will usually produce tailor in the 1 to 2.5kg range.

Those wanting to encounter larger fish on a regular basis will be using large cut fillets of fresh mullet, tailor and bonito or whole large gar. Patience is the key to these bigger as is a move to plastic coated wire to ensure these big greenbacks don’t part your line with their razor teeth.

Those chasing XOS tailor start to fall into the same class as Jew fishermen, spending long lonely nights awaiting that explosive big fish run but the rewards make it well worth the wait when your 5kg fish comes in.

Tailor Tactics Smaller tailor can at times be fickle when it comes to taking a bait. On the same day they may only hit a still bait, then a slow moving presentation or drifting bait.
