Maintaining a Balance As a progressive and happily ‘woke’ resident of Bribie Island, I struggle to find articles of any relevance to me in your paper.

We have the Member for Glass House with a half page column criticising Labor.

He does so from the comfort of his seat in opposition, (having no responsibility or power to make change), which he will likely be sitting in for the foreseeable future. Where is the right of reply from Steven Miles? Where is the column space for Ali King, who is an assistant minister in the current government, with both responsibilities and the power to make change.

Then we have the Gecko with his dissertation on being ‘woke’. The term was first used, not by the current younger generation as falsely claimed by the anonymous Gecko, but by American black activists in the 1960s. Being ‘woke’ means being aware of social injustice, being open to positive change, taking responsibility for affirmative action, amongst other things.

So ‘woke’ is actually a compliment which empathetic citizens wear proudly.

Where do we look for balance in your paper?

G Taylor Bribie Island A pie in the sky I have finally stopped chuckling at the contribution from P Freeman regarding the Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell.

Well thank God for the Andrew Powells’ in this world to give us another perspective on the conduct of our state government. Initially Mr Freeman is allowed to bag the Member for Glass House, but that same member is not allowed to bag the Member for Pumicestone. The Member for Pumicestone is capable of contributing to this journal, but appears to favour that other magazine that has recently demonstrated its leaning.

As for our dynamic local member, perhaps she could elaborate on why this ‘hospital’ will have taken four years to complete, a project worth 12 months at the most.

Does it have anything to do with the forthcoming state election? So far, it has been a four-year union picnic financed by the taxpayer. The new ‘hospital’ and some pretty pictures of a new bridge is all she has going for her. The ‘hospital’ is not a hospital and the bridge is pie in the sky.

By Alistair Gray The opening of Morayfield's new Allied Health Hub is a fantastic Moreton Bay success story. It is a story of entrepreneurship, innovation and collaboration, delivering an outstanding facility for the people of Caboolture and its surroundings. It is being offered when our health system is under enormous pressure, yet delivers leading-edge solutions in an integrated way that minimises delivery costs and achieves better outcomes and patient experiences.

The Allied Health Hub aims to be a one-stop shop where patients can see all their healthcare professionals in one place and with carefully integrated appointment planning in one visit. The new integrated delivery system replaces the need for patients to travel long distances to different ends of the city on multiple days to see their service provider. Besides meeting the enormous community demands for conventional services, the Allied Health Hub is very focused on supporting the needs of those with a disability and NDIS with its free advocacy services.

I sat down with Allied Health Hub entrepreneurs Tim Bradford, who has more than 10 years of experience in the disability industry; practice manager Deb Constance with more than 27 years of experience in allied health clinics; and GP at the health hub Dr Evan Jones, to learn more about the new Hub. The concept of the Allied Health Hub came about after Deb pitched the idea at a Techstars Entrepreneurial start-up weekend and what followed was a collaboration between Deb, Tim and Evan resulting in this fabulous new facility.

Tim and Evan recognised the many barriers to people in the area getting access to multidisciplinary health services. Massive and closed waiting lists, difficulty accessing funding, complexity and feeling overwhelmed are the norm.

Additionally, there are further barriers for those with a disability accessing the NDIS, dealing with the red tape, making applications for assistance and complying with compliance requirements.

"The goal was to put together a multidisciplinary team where the client is at the centre of everything,” Tim said.

"We aim to provide a high-quality, truly patient-focused service with the patient at the heart of things with a multidisciplinary team. Our advantage here is that we can have input from all the Allied Health practitioners, doctors and specialists. And we know that if you can deliver this high-quality, multidisciplinary, integrated model of care, the care people get will be much better” Dr Jones added. “So, all the evidence shows us that a multidisciplinary, integrated, high-quality model gives excellent outcomes for patients, whereas traditionally delivered in a fragmented way. And so that's why our vision was about this. And in this community, as a GP, we see people who should be on the NDIS but are often refused for whatever reason. So, they needed to have an advocate to help them through the process of accessing funds. Then once they have NDIS funding, they will be able to access the services they need.

It's all about thinking about the barriers to care and trying to break them down.

So that people can access the care that they require.”

There will be a training centre, including kitchens for dietitians and psychologists to work with patients. They are already running special classes for Mum and bub, prenatal, postnatal, balance and fall prevention, classes for only Veterans, classes for fitness and much more. Eighteen practitioners are already working at the new Hub and there will be rapid expansion over the next year.

Act of kindness I would like to share an experience I had recently.

After upgrading my mobile phone (I am an elderly lady and do not find technology easy), I was sitting on a seat outside Telstra trying to use my new iPhone with a little difficulty, so I asked for help from the lady sitting beside me.

The lady said there was no need for me to phone for a taxi. This complete stranger offered to drive me home as she had to wait an hour to see her doctor and this would allow her to fill in that time.

As we hear and see a lot of not so good news on TV, it is a pleasure to share acts of kindness.

"The outcome of that is that we are doing what the NDIS is supposed to do, which is build capacity and help people become more independent, help them get back to work if that's what they want to do or become active members of society,” Tim points out. “And when you've got the need that we have in this area, if that's not how you do it, you create an ever-increasing pile of dependent people. So we're trying to help people regain their independence and dignity.”

A key to the success of the Allied Health Hub is the collaboration between the different practitioners, GPs and specialists with case conferencing, using a shared database to enable the multidisciplinary team to see what each other is doing with a focus on the patient's needs, priorities and goals. The result is that those with multiple health conditions can get better health outcomes.

By Alistair Gray What a thrill it was to watch Kiani Smith, with her guitar and golden voice, fight for her place on the Australian Idol stage to make the top 10 finalists.

Decided by public vote, it was clear Kiani was in the top six, with little separating the votes of the bottom four contestants and thanks to the strong voting support from her friends and many Bribie Islanders. What a remarkable achievement for this young super star.

Many of her friends and followers on Bribie would have been jumping with excitement at the result. At just 17 years

of age, Kiani showed maturity beyond her young age as she put her dream of being a professional singer out there.

Australian Idol, a Channel 7 reality show running since 2003, aims to find the most commercial Australian young singer. The competition is tough and judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark are ruthless, but supporting as they sort their way through the singers in their search for a young star with special star magic. The finalists will now continue a series of performances and public voting. Kiani Smith, we all wish you every success as you enter the final stage of the competition. Go Kiani!

A chocolatey time of year

cross buns – with butter, jam and cream, toasted or plain straight out of the packet. It is thought that this treat originates from England in the mid1300s. In Australia, hot cross buns go on sale in supermarkets and bakeries from as early as Boxing Day (face palm!).

These days you can find a variety of hot cross bun flavours including traditional, chocolate, apple and cinnamon and the latest I found was Pizza Shapes Hot Cross Buns – not sure how I feel about this one!!

Easter, the one time of year where chocolate seems to be a good meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Okay, so maybe a little extreme, but if my kids had their way, they’d certainly try to eat as much chocolate as they can stomach.

Throw in a few hot cross buns too and it certainly makes for a sweet time of year.

Food aside, what makes Easter a special time of year and why is it celebrated?

Easter began as a holiday on the Christian calendar to commemorate Jesus’ death and resurrection. The introduction of the Easter Bunny and chocolate eggs have certainly commercialised this holiday. Easter also coincides with the beginning of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

Most people in Australia celebrate the Easter holiday in some way, shape or form. Some do this for religious reasons, however, just like Christmas, Easter has become less about religion for many people in Australia. Others simply enjoy the opportunity to relax over the long weekend. People might head to Mass at their local church, gather for a meal with family, catch up with friends or take the time to get on top of things around the house. And of course, an oldie but a goodie nonetheless, let’s not forget about the backyard/park Easter egg hunts! Something for the young (and young at heart) to enjoy. There is something sweet and magical about the joy an Easter egg hunt brings to anyone’s face when they uncover an array of yummy treats hidden specially for them!

The word ‘Easter’ doesn’t appear to have a definitive origin, but from looking into it further, many people believe it’s named after the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring and fertility, Eostre. The celebration of equinoxes and solstices has long been a pagan tradition, since before Christianity. The Easter symbols of eggs and rabbits are both used to symbolise new life.

Early Christians used eggs as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus during Easter. Traditionally, Christians practicing Lent would abstain from all animal products leading up to Easter and then eat eggs during Easter celebrations. This is where the Easter traditions of hard-boiling eggs and decorating them began. It seems many countries around the world have

their own unique Easter symbols. For example, Germany has an Easter fox, there’s the cuckoo in Switzerland and here in Australia we have a fondness for the bilby, a native marsupial.

Cost of living crisis continues At the outset, HAPPY 100th Issue!

One hundred issues, with so many more to come. Such an outstanding achievement and testament to the importance locals place on having a local paper.

A huge “thank you” to Belinda and the team!

Question: What do Premier Steven Miles and the big supermarkets have in common?

Answer: They only care about themselves, they don’t care about you, they’re bad for cost of living and both must be held accountable for their actions.

You may have heard the premier talk about launching a parliamentary select committee inquiry into the big supermarkets. Fair enough, we all know grocery prices have gone through the roof and the cost of putting food on the table has never been higher. I and the LNP opposition, welcome the spotlight being shone on the practices of the big supermarkets.

But we don’t think such a parliamentary inquiry goes far enough.

That’s why the LNP has announced it will expand Queensland’s Cost of Living Inquiry to assess state government impacts on the kitchen table big bills and help ease the Queensland cost of living

crisis.

Following CPI revelations Queensland is facing the worst cost of living pressures in the nation, the LNP has moved to put government impacts on cost of living under a microscope including electricity, transport, insurance and water.

To expand the inquiry’s scope, we will negotiate with crossbench parliamentarians, to secure their support and amend the select committee’s terms of reference.

Steven Miles announced a big supermarkets inquiry, knowing full-well he wasn’t looking at the things his government controls.

As I said, supermarkets absolutely need to be held accountable, but so does this decade-old Labor government that’s driving-up cost of living pressures on Queenslanders.

The LNP’s expansion to the Cost of Living Select Committee Terms of Inquiry include: • The impact of rising electricity prices, after Queensland experienced a 20% increase in power bills, the worst in the nation and triple the national average, with the Callide power plant being offline for nearly three years.

The impact of skyrocketing insurance prices, after Queensland experienced 18.5% increases in insurance due to the youth crime crisis and Labor’s failure to deliver flood resilience.

• The impact of rising water costs, as well as a lack of water security, with the government failing to build new dams and now tearing down the Paradise Dam, with no water security plan to bring down the cost of water for growers.

• The impact of increased transport costs, after Queensland experienced the biggest increases in transport costs in the nation, as a result of the government’s failure to maintain and invest in our road and rail network.

Queenslanders expect their government to do everything in its power to drive down costs, not be the reason cost of living is skyrocketing.

The family and small business who just copped a massive jump in their insurance premiums because young thugs stole their cars under Labor’s weak laws aren’t ‘dumb’.

Why wouldn’t Steven Miles want the Cost of Living Inquiry to be expanded to the things his government controls?

Adrian and Kerri Raedel are running for Divisions 12 and 3 in the upcoming City of Moreton Bay council election.

By Sheree Hoddinett It’s been four years in the making, but Adrian Raedel has decided it’s time to return to council. Vying for his old seat in Division 12 in the City of Moreton Bay, which he was first elected to in 2008, Mr Raedel is more than ready for the challenge ahead of him after facing corruption charges (later being cleared) and intense scrutiny when running for mayor at the last election in 2020. Fast forward to 2024, a successful venture in town planning and still with nothing to hide, Mr Raedel is raring to go and ready to represent the community once again. In a surprise twist, his wife Kerri is also running in the upcoming council election, nominating for Division 3.

While it’s certainly no secret now, just weeks out from the election on March 16, it did take some time for Mr Raedel to decide he wanted to dive back in again.

It was while attending consultation meetings for the new highway with fellow residents that Mr Raedel started to feel the urge.

“I was able to go to the consultation meetings with these people and help them through the process….it kind of felt like the right place to be,” Mr Raedel said. “It was nice to be able to help and give back to those particular people who supported me for so long.”

After keeping everyone in suspense (or not, if you look at the speculation), Mr Raedel shared a video to say what many had been waiting to hear – he was running again for Division 12. Rumours were also swirling that he was writing a book, that he and Kerri were getting divorced and also they were having another baby – none of which are true by the way.

“It is going to be a hard ask, there is an incumbent, but I think it's time that we put the local back into the local government,” Mr Raedel said. “And I think that's what we're missing here in Division 12 and to be honest I think it's what we're missing right across the City of Moreton Bay. So, we're going to give it a go and bring our community back into the forefront of the City of Moreton Bay.” While this may not be Mrs Raedel’s first council election experience, it’s

certainly new territory for her running as a candidate. Taking everyone by surprise in nominating, Mrs Raedel wants the community to know that she wants to be a part of a change.

“I have decided to put my hand up for Division 3, an area that encompasses Caboolture, Morayfield and surrounds,” Mrs Raedel said. “I feel we need better representation in this area, because we all live either in Caboolture or around Caboolture and nothing is happening in our main centre hub of town. And I want to change that. So, I've sat back and watched it just decline in my opinion and I think I can do better, I want to do better, I want to be proud.

“I want people to be proud to say I live in Caboolture or Morayfield or that they live near these areas. I want people to own their town.”

Mrs Raedel said it was time to put her vision where her mouth was.

“I know I have the skills to enter politics.

So I'm going to do it,” she said. “I have a good mentor; I have learnt from the best.

“I have seen the worst. I have experienced the worst. But what I know is that when you sit down and you complain about something and you don't do anything to change it, then who's the problem?”

While they are running in two separate divisions, the Raedels are choosing to campaign as a team with the yellow and black signature look featuring for both candidates in their signage and other material.

“We are both individual candidates, we both have our signs and we'll be watching what’s going on out there,” Mrs Raedel said. “But we are running as a team and want to be a part of the change to make the change happen.”

Our declining living standards Now, we all know there is pressure on all of us with the cost of living. Increased prices in supermarkets put pressure on disposable household income. “Shrinkflation” is obvious with items showing smaller sizes, but maintained at the old price for the previous larger sizes. Taxes on fuel and alcohol have increased dramatically, which has increased pressure on household disposable income.

Shoppers are now focusing on ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’ in an effort to make their household disposable income go further. It is pretty obvious that our living standards, we once considered one of the highest in the world, has now rapidly declined.

The promise by Labor to cut household power bills by $275 per year never happened. Instead, power prices increased by at least 20%. Albanese and his frontbench ministers promised some 90 times that Labor would deliver a substantial cut in household power bills. Liar, liar, pants on fire! Albanese’s commitment to raise real wages has also fallen foul of the facts, with some households 8% worse off in real terms. By the time wages increase and tax cuts are delivered in July, you will still be worse off in ‘real terms’.

Unfortunately, our government does not have the strong leadership, nor the intelligence of ministers to focus on and rectify the real problem of our declining living standards. Instead, we have a weak government more concerned with prioritising climate change, renewable resources, immigration, the Voice and other minority groups that make a big noise.

It is now projected that Australia’s real household disposable income per capita won’t recover to 2015 levels until 2026! In other words, we have gone so far backwards that even the promised wages increase and tax cuts will still not change the status quo.

And it will get worse, because we have government ministers, such as our energy minister Chris Bowen, who claims wind energy and solar energy are cheap and clean. He is blind to the reality that despite all of this, our power bills are astronomical.

It is a similar story with real wages. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s projection

Performing Jolene for her Australian Idol audition may not have seen her advance on the show, but it’s certainly renewed Tayla Adams’ love for music and performing. As one of two Bribie girls to make it to the televised auditions, Tayla graced the room with her guitar in hand and left a lasting impression on judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark. Despite her obvious talent and beautiful voice, Tayla may have missed out on a golden ticket to the next round of the show, but feels she gained a new perspective on why she loves music so much.

A total of five divisional areas don’t have to head along to the polls on March 16.

At the close of nominations on February 13, the council’s mayor was unopposed, along with councillors in divisions 1, 4, 7, 9 and 11.

State-wide, a total of 15 mayoral positions and 46 councillor positions were uncontested, with the City of Moreton Bay Council the most populous locality impacted. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said as a result, electors in those divisional areas will not be required to vote at all in this election.

“There are a significant number of City of Moreton Bay Council electors who won’t need to vote for mayor or councillor,” Mr Vidgen said. “Of the council’s 345,350 electors, there will be just under 140,000 who won’t need to vote – that’s 40.5% of the total number of electors.

“It’s important for those electors in the remaining divisions of the City of Moreton Bay Council to be aware that they still need to vote for their councillor and that voting is compulsory in local government elections.

“If electors don’t know which divisional area they are in, now is the time for them to head to our website to look this up so they know whether they need to vote in these elections.”

“It was the Speak Now tour, I remember going with my mum and sisters. We had a restricted view, but it ended up being really close,” Tayla said. “That night I was thinking, I want to do this. And I’m pretty sure I started learning guitar the next day, I would have been about 12.”

It takes a lot of bravado to put yourself forward for a singing show on national television. But it seems it’s not the first time Tayla has gone down this path.

So what is it really like singing on television and in front of Marcia, Amy and Kyle?

“It was pretty surreal,” Tayla said. “So now looking back, it feels really weird seeing myself on TV and also seeing people that I met and how they’re progressing through the show.

“But at the time, I don’t think it really sank in, especially in the moment – we filmed it in October. I just followed the steps and I don’t think I really put it together that it was all going to be aired until it actually happened.

“But it was a great experience and to spend time in Sydney for a couple of days and make connections, it made it all the more memorable for me.”

On TV, Tayla’s screen time was quite short, but she remembers it lasting a lot longer, enjoying the opportunity to chat with the judges.

“Kyle talked about Bribie and his mum living there. Amy Shark made a comment about me being the next Taylor Swift and I remember telling Mum and

Heading down the path of being a singer songwriter stems back to when Tayla was growing up. She has been singing for as long as she can remember (she’s now 24), but it was a Taylor Swift concert in 2011 which sparked her interest in song writing.

“A couple of years ago I auditioned for The Voice and I went through a few producer rounds,” Tayla said. “Then a producer from The Voice messaged me last year and suggested I audition for Idol. So I did, but I didn't get through the second producer round and I thought I'll give it one more shot when I saw it pop up again for the most recent season.”

Tayla’s passion for music

No need to vote for 140,000 local residents

Tayla Adams has rediscovered her true love of music since her time on Australian Idol.

Dad that after the audition, I was like, ‘oh my God, this can't be real’,” Tayla recalls.

Taylor Swift may have kicked off her true love of writing and playing music, but Tayla’s inspiration also comes from the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Zach Bryan and Tyler Childers to name a few. What goes through her mind to come up with a song?

“Normally it's when I'm just playing around with a guitar and I'll come up with a melody or a chord progression of some sort,” Tayla said. “Then I'll start singing along with whatever guitar I'm playing and then add words to it. That's normally the steps that it follows, but I always have something in the back of my mind that I'm kind of keen to write about, that I just find words to fit that melody.”

While music is an important part of her life, there is another side to Tayla. She is busy working with adults and adolescents in the area of speech therapy in North Brisbane. After graduating from university last year, this is her first fulltime job within the industry.

“First I studied physio for a couple years, because I originally wanted to do something medical through high school,”

Tayla said. “I didn't quite get there, so I went into physio thinking that would be half similar. I didn't like it and then found speech, which I ended up really loving and I stuck with it.”

Although life has been busy for Tayla since she auditioned for the show, music has taken somewhat of a back seat, until now.

“Since my audition aired, I think I have found a new spark again and I’m going to ease back into it with gigs,” she said.

“I’d like to do at least one gig a week if I can.

“I’m also looking to do some gigs at Johnny Ringo’s in Brisbane, which would be an amazing experience with possibly a band behind me and gain more of a following with my music. It’s always been a goal to play there because it’s pretty much the only country bar in Brisbane and I’ve been there many times since I turned 18.

“And then eventually I’d like to release my own music, that would be my big goal if I can do it.”

Mr Vidgen said the situation had created a number of flow-on effects for the City of Moreton Bay, which is Queensland’s third largest council.

“Firstly, we won’t need to open polling booths in those five divisional areas, so have made the decision to close 25 booths that would have catered to electors in those divisions, along with one early voting centre at Bongaree.”

The ECQ will be undertaking a range of awareness activities in the lead-up to election day to communicate information to electors about the changes, including via the website and through email, SMS, local advertising and engagement activities.

By Alistair Gray When the first issue of The Island and Surrounds launched in July 2016, Belinda Ferguson could never have imagined how far it would come. As the owner of the only newspaper servicing Bribie Island and surrounding suburbs, Belinda is beyond proud of the paper’s latest achievement – reaching 100 issues!

Now known as The Local News, the paper comes out every 28 days with the consistency of an old-fashioned timepiece. That is eight years of hard work and service to our local community from Belinda and her team.

Love or hate the paper, one can't deny the vital role the paper plays in our community in providing a communication channel to support everything local. As a result, this sometimes means controversy and differences in opinions as the paper engages with its readers.

Since starting the paper all those years ago, Belinda has actually never been interviewed. With 99 issues already out there in print, it was time! I sat down with Belinda and learned a little about her career and the challenges of running a local newspaper.

Belinda, also known as Bee to her friends, went to Keebra Park High School, moved out of home at the age of 16 and started work in a surf shop on the Gold Coast. She discovered a passion for sales and sold women's wear and men's boardies in a retail operation.

After six or seven years, Belinda moved to Sydney and worked as a travel agent.

Then, she got a job as a sales rep with government stores and was on the road selling. Belinda then spent some time in telecommunications before joining the Show Group. The Show Group was the travel agent of the film, entertainment and sports industry. They looked after all the large international and local bands who were touring, which meant she saw some great shows and entertainers, including meeting Michael Jackson and getting his autograph. The Show Group looked after air, accommodation and car arrangements, with Belinda making many proposals to win business. She used to look after arrangements for film companies when they were out on location, even taking care of the transport of film rushes (raw footage) that had to be sent back daily for editing. She was there for about 10 years, before moving back to Queensland and taking on the membership manager role at Pacific Harbour Golf Club, selling transferrable memberships. Belinda also worked with Lisa France in the electoral office.

Belinda’s biggest strength is in selling and business development. She had already developed many strong relationships with local businesspeople on Bribie and saw the opportunity to set up her own newspaper. On July 28, 2016, the first 28-page issue of The Local Island and Surrounds News came to life and the paper only grew from there.

"I love the community and thought we needed a good independent paper,” Belinda said.

I asked Belinda what made our newspaper different and what had contributed to its longevity in an era dominated by digital media?

"It's our demographic and our little local community likes their local newspaper because we focus on local issues. Mainstream media does not focus on local issues,” she said. “The one thing I do like is controversy. I like people to read the paper and either get cranky or agree.

That is engagement and that is what it is all about.

“What I love about my writing team (Alistair and Sheree) is they cover local stories you can't find anywhere else. We are also the only newspaper to deliver to driveways and we are consistent every single time with the timing of our delivery. The paper also provides a platform for locals to talk about local issues, which is very important in our community as there is nothing else out there that does those things other than social media.

“The challenge with producing a printed newspaper is the cost of printing, which has risen 40% in the last three years. That is huge and hard on the local advertisers.”

I then asked Belinda how she navigated the balance between providing unbiased news coverage and serving the interests of readers and advertisers?

"I try to be balanced, to have balanced articles and I am always prepared to be challenged on local issues,” Belinda said.

“So, it is tough when there are certain members of the community who don’t communicate or talk with you, especially on big local issues.”

With 100 issues of the paper done and dusted, what does the future hold?

“It is the advertisers that make this publication possible. I am very grateful for their involvement and would love to see our locals continue to support our local businesses and keep our economy going.”

- Belinda Ferguson At the time, the News Corp owned Bribie Weekly serviced the island and their focus was not on local news. They suddenly stopped delivery when Covid hit.

"It was tough for the first couple of years and I struggled,” Belinda said. “with many mistakes made, but I learnt from the feedback because all the readers would tell me how many mistakes I made.

"There is one mistake that stands out above and beyond everything. When one of the writers interviewed somebody, he asked ‘what is your favourite meal? Chilli Crab.’ Instead, he wrote Chilli Crap and we printed it 24,000 times.

“Now, I have such a good team that

takes care of all the editing for me so I can focus on the business, the sales and the admin.”

When Belinda started, she was determined to operate her business properly, take care of all fundamentals and meet all her obligations. To do this, she employed a top accountant to teach and support her. One of the biggest challenges in starting out was ensuring she had enough advertisers to pay the overheads. Heaps of content was available, but none of that is worth it without the advertisers to cover the costs, so careful budgeting and managing the advertising funnel was critical to her success.

Initially, it was a slow process, but the business grew as Belinda learnt from the feedback.

One of the great successes was the Cranky Lizard and Contemplations columns written by the late great Harvey Fewings. These columns enabled Belinda to gauge what the readership was thinking and what people were saying by the many incoming Letters to the Editor. There were readers frustrated by what Harvey was writing. They would write in and hate what he had written, yet next month, they would say they couldn't stop reading it. Feedback and

"One hundred issues is a big achievement. It is a massive achievement. I didn’t think I would get there, but I am here and plan to do 300 more,” Belinda said. “The legacy I want to create is that the community continues to talk about subjects that are a bit controversial and to have a paper that continues to engage the readers. Not everybody will think the same way and not everybody will have the same political aspirations, but it is good for people to debate the issues.”

Despite all of her own achievements, Belinda knows none of it would be possible without those who have supported her. Belinda acknowledges her mentors who helped her along the way - the late Harvey Fewings and Damien Brown and more recently, Michael Thomas. She is grateful for their advice, wisdom and support during many challenging times.

Jill is a horticulturist and has an Associate Diploma in Horticulture and has worked in the horticulture industry at various nurseries round the greater Brisbane area for 30 years.

Hi gardeners and welcome to Autumn!!!

Did you know that the grass family is the largest family in the plant kingdom and are pollinated by the wind? One of these is Pennisetum or fountain grass. It is a pretty perennial grass with a compact clump of narrow leaves. In summer, it has fuzzy spikes of copper red flowers which dry brown and last well into winter. They are drought tolerant and grow fuller if they are watered regularly in spring and summer. They like to live in the sun in a well-drained soil and can be cut back to the ground at the end of winter. They also lend themselves to growing in pots.

I'm living in hope that the humidity will be disappearing in the near future, as it can be quite spectacular in the southern states with the leaves on the trees changing colour heralding the coming of a new season. The war on weeds in our gardens and lawns has been quite a challenge these past few months.

I thought it would be nice to look at succulents and groundcovers as a weapon against our enemy, the weed. Looking for that element of surprise in your garden or pot. Let us look at what is lovingly called the camels in the world of plants.

GROUNDCOVERS AND SUCCULENTS Mesembryanthemum, the Livingstone daisy is a very unusual succulent. This plant can also be found under the name Dorotheanthus, named after the botanist's wife Dorothy. Classed as an annual, it has low growth and a fantastic display of different coloured daisy flowers which close up at night. They love full sunshine and need very little water once established but, do remember to fertilise and water occasionally.

Echeverias have a low growing habit with a rosette form and bell-shaped flowers on leafless stalks. There are many varieties of this plant. They love the sun and do well in a well-drained area of the garden. Fertilise in spring and water occasionally in summer.

Aptenia or creeping mesembranthemum, is a great trailing plant with bright green stems and small succulent evergreen leaves. It has lovely red daisy flowers and also comes in a variegated leaf variety.

Fertilise in spring to promote growth and flowers.

Sedum contains many ornamental species. This plant will grow anywhere and produces a cluster of small yellow flowers. It is a 'no care’ plant and is not fussy about the soil it grows in, but does need good drainage.

Sempervivium has great symmetry with small rosettes. It grows very quickly in clumps and is a ground-hugging plant producing small yellow flowers. In Europe, they were planted on the roof with just a handful of soil to protect the house from lightning. This tells you it can be grown in very shallow soil. It requires very little fertiliser, but does appreciate a regular water in summer and then let dry out in winter.

flower colours in yellow, pink, red or orange. There are also perennial varieties, these tend to be single flowers, but still with lovely, coloured flowers. So easy to grow, they like a well-drained soil, an occasional water and fertilising when the plant comes into flower. The flowers will close up on a cloudy day.

All of these pretty succulents mentioned so far are great for the garden, but how about a mass planting in pots or hanging baskets? Bushy or clumpy in habit, these succulents will be ideal sitting on your veranda or deck.

Mondo grass (ophiopogon) comes in green leaf, black leaf or dwarf varieties.

It has dense grass-like foliage. Another hardy plant that soon multiplies to form a thick weed-resisting mat. It is drought tolerant and very hardy. It makes an interesting border in the garden or on pathways.

Adenium obesum (Desert Rose) is a small shrub with thick, succulent branches and long green leaves which appear in spring and fall off in autumn.

It has beautiful funnel-shaped flowers in pinkish red. Coming in other flower colours, they can be hard to find. Slow growing to about a metre and a half, this plant makes a good pot plant. Preferring a sunny position, in a soil that is limefree and well-drained, as it does tend to get root rot. Water regularly when in leaf, but no water when it has no leaves.

Fertilise in spring.

Cannas or as they were known by the Native Americans – Indian Shot – which comes from the hard seeds which were used as weapons. They are not the most attractive plant, but have big leaves in green or bronze, topped with clusters of flowers in cream, pink, orange, yellow or scarlet, which can only be described as floppy. They can grow anywhere from 80cm-2m. They flower from summer through to autumn, growing in light shade but flower better in the sun. They like a well composted soil and like to be kept moist, so poor drainage is not a problem. Plant from now on, fertilising in spring and summer with a regular watering and cut back to the ground when the flower stems are spent. Another plant that will grow well in a large pot and should be re-potted each year.

How about an exotic bird in your garden or large pot flowering in summer and autumn? Then the Strelitzia reginae is the

plant for you, with the flower heads of gold-orange and royal blue wings. The leaves are a grey green colour and look good all year round. These plants will grow in shade, but prefer a sun loving well-drained and fertile soil. Fertilise in spring and water well in the summer months. They make an excellent cut flower. Their height is approximately 1.5m. The other Bird of Paradise is the Strelitzia Nicolai, which is an extremely large tree growing to approximately 5m.

If your leaves are turning light green or yellow give the plants a feed with some iron chelate. Too many buds will stop the flowers from opening, so start disbudding leaving two buds per terminal and a couple along the stem. Coming into autumn, spray with a camellia and azalea liquid fertiliser and give them their last feed of slow-release fertiliser for camellias, azaleas and gardenias. If the plants are being attacked by loopers, give them a spray with some dipel. With all the heavy rain we have had recently, top up your mulch.

Knowing she can make people feel good about themselves in such a short space of time is a big part of what motivates Tia. “What I love most about this job is how it makes people feel,” Tia said. “I love that a person can walk in with the world on their shoulders and leave feeling happier than when they arrived. I love watching a plus size woman walk in with no confidence and walk out the opposite.

“I love seeing people with anxiety jump out of their comfort zone and overcome fear. I like that our studio is judgement free and welcomes everybody with open arms.”

While there is no one particular person that Tia looks up to, she does have a fridge full of daily affirmations that she reads over and over and reminds herself of every day. That being said, one of the most beautiful things about Tia is that she views herself exactly the same as everyone she sees come into the studio.

“I see myself the same as every woman who walks into the studio – equal and definitely not better than them,” she said.

“I see myself leading a tribe of extremely capable, amazing, fierce women and kids and I hope that I can positively ‘mentor’ or add to each of their lives along the way. I do believe many of them actually listen to my crazy preach, haha!

“My proudest moments are when I see someone jump out of their comfort zone.

Someone who is proud of themselves for doing something they never thought they would – whether it be classes, performing or making friends! I feel extremely proud when one of our tribe says ‘I feel beautiful in this’ or ‘I’ve never done anything for myself like this before’.”

As we approach International Women’s Day, what does it all mean to a successful and motivational woman like Tia? “International Women’s Day means a lot to me in that our business is predominantly women and girls,” Tia said. “This day is about celebrating being a woman and everything about that should be celebrated!

“Women should be lifting each other up, supporting one another and accepting each other exactly as they are. Today, we

are thankful for the equal rights that we are privileged to have.

“I hope I influence the women around me in a positive way. I try to fill every class with smiles and laughter. I like to open deep conversations and I like to genuinely ask how my student’s days are going.

“I like to remind them that it’s okay to have boundaries, self-worth and to live with gratitude. I like to see women taking time for themselves, especially mums! I feel I also influence women not to judge each other but to applaud each other instead.”

Her own hardworking mother is a big inspiration for Tia, along with all the other amazing women out there who have taken the leap to become a business owner.

“Small business can be extremely challenging at times and there is no better person to chat about it with than other business owners who just ‘get it’,” she said.

We only have one chance at life and while it’s not always easy to get everything right the first time, you never know unless you give things a go. With that in mind, Tia has a little bit of advice for others out there who might need a little push.

“My biggest piece of advice would be to jump out of your comfort zone and try new things because you really don’t know what you’re missing,” Tia said.

“Find the group or activity where you just ‘fit’.”

According to the manufacturer, this makes the hull incredibly strong and the boat unsinkable. The construction also makes for a quiet ride with no drumming or hull slap, even at speed or in choppy conditions.

With a professionally designed hull, this 4.8-metre catamaran comes with all the goodies you would expect of a boat of

this class, with front and rear seating, including two rotating pedestal seats, ideal for the comfort of the serious fisherman. The vessel is powered by a more than adequate 40hp Yamaha 4-stroke engine with only 10 hours of use, meaning the engine is barely run in. There is also heaps of storage and a Bimini top to protect you from the sun. The Quantum Cat 480 comes with a new aluminium Magnum 4 trailer, which makes launching and retrieving the boat easy for one person. You can drive the Cat on or off the trailer with little effort. Dolphins show promise ahead of official season start Despite one win and one loss in the pre-season challenge, the Dolphins have showed they mean business as we head into the official start of the 2024 NRL season. The Dolphins overcame some poor discipline and a determined Gold Coast Titans side to notch up a 26-14 win in their first pre-season challenge match on February 18.

Sitting in for Wayne Bennett for the pre-season challenge match, Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf named a strong line-up, giving fans the first look at new signings Thomas Flegler, Herbie Farnworth and Jake Averillo.

Herbie Farnworth got off to a great start, scoring only seven minutes into his club debut. It's not often that the prop forward crosses for tries, so it was understandable that Jarrod Wallace celebrated strongly after going in for an easy four-pointer. The try also helped the Dolphins regain the lead after being frustrated by a determined Titans side.

With the first win under their belt, the Dolphins were eager to continue their streak across the ditch in the second week of the pre-season challenge against the Auckland Warriors on February 24.

While they stayed in the contest for the entire match, the Dolphins couldn’t quite match the full force of the Warriors, go-

ing down 34-22. As an added blow, star forward Tom Gilbert suffered a suspected ACL injury just 45 minutes into the game. Gilbert missed most of the 2023 season after he injured his shoulder in game one of the State of Origin series.

Gilbert was on the comeback trail in 2024 and poised for a big season for the Dolphins, but there are grave fears that he has suffered a major right knee injury after he changed direction and hit the turf just four minutes into the second half with his side down 18-6 to the Warriors. It would be a devastating blow for Gilbert and the Dolphins given how much they missed him last year (Gilbert underwent a shoulder reconstruction in June), with the former Cowboy establishing himself as one of the best young forwards in the game. Initial tests indicated a suspected ACL tear, but Gilbert was set to undergo further testing.

“He’s a big part of our team and we are just gutted for him at the moment, but obviously we just have to wait and see what the scans say,” Dolphins assistant coach Nathan Fien said after the match.

It’s Phins up time for the Dolphins as they start the official 2024 season against fellow Queensland side the Cowboys at Suncorp Stadium this Sunday (March 10).
