Letter from the Owner Belinda Ferguson Welcome to issue 19 our 2017 Xmas issue and final issue for 2017, personally I would like to wish all our readers a very Merry Xmas and a safe and prosperous New Year.

Also, I would like to thank our extremely valued clients for their business which has allowed the ISLAND and Surrounds to bring you HONEST and local news to your homes.

For us 2018 will bring some exciting new changes (so watch this space!!!!). As usual we will be focusing on our wonderful community and all it has to offer along with up to date information from our Local state member. 2017 was a huge learning experience for the team at TIAS, I am so proud and honoured to be working with such a talented group of people who have contributed so much to my newspaper.

Just wondering if I’m the only one that was immensely pleased to see the final unseating of the would-be politician in our last state elections, that had believed he was seriously serving the local community.

Not. For the fact that he continued his appalling rhetoric, through another publication, after the last counted vote, only proves to the rest of us mere plebs, that he had been elected under some misbegotten assumption that he would do a good job. There appears to be a number of assertions levelled at specific people that have been going on for some time now, but in my opinion, are nothing but sour grapes. And considering the party he was affiliated with, blue-pencilled him, that alone should be enough said on the subject.

Dear Editor, On reading the article which I presume was a political paid article for the Local Elections, I was amazed that it was published as it stood.

As the article was in the promotion of Mr. Fahey, I feel that it did not do him any justice.

I do not know who typed up the article or even if it was proof read. When I went to school, during English Language lessons we were taught that the names of people, places and identities were all given a capital letter. I may have missed a few, but at my last count there were 51 errors where lower case letters were used instead of capital letters. Also I found 6 spelling mistakes hence me asking - was this article proof read?

If this is the standard of what our children are learning nowadays, please bring back the rigor of learning that we were taught back in the 1950’s. And Editor I suggest that you get your staff to proof read any and all the articles you publish as it reflects badly on your paper.

Hi, my name is Kathleen. My husband went into the barber’s shop at Welsby Parade at Bongaree for a haircut. I thought this was the perfect picture I saw when we went in. I have lived here just 12 months after moving here from Sydney and I am amazed at how friendly all the shopkeepers are here on Bribie, it is a lovely place to live.

Moreton Bay mozzie treatments kicks off Moreton Bay Regional Council commenced its regional aerial mosquito management program on Friday the 1s of December. Council’s vector management helicopter treated saltmash areas in Clontarf, Rothwell, Kippa-Ring, Mango Hill, Griffin, Lawnton and Strathpine. On Saturday 2 December, the aerial treatment program continued covering the areas of Burpengary, Beachmere, Toorbul, Ningi, Bribie Island, Donnybrook and Elimbah.

The aerial treatments, which target mosquito larvae, before they have the chance to emerge, coincides with council’s ongoing program to treat mosquitos on the ground in public places like parks, sports facilities and local reserves.

By targeting the mosquitos, where they breed, the treatment stops the mosquitoes, that can fly up to 10 kilometres from the saltmarsh where they breed, travelling across the region.

You can help to manage mosquitos numbers in the region by taking a few simple steps in and around the home, where most mosquitos breed.

Take five minutes to empty any containers that might have rainwater and change the water in your pet’s bowl, and make sure your swimming pool remains chlorinated.

People are encouraged to continue to apply mosquito repellent when heading outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk.

I sat down with Kylie Cassidy, local Bribie mum and director of The Barnyard Market on Bribie Island before the opening to talk everything family, partnership, business, community and fresh healthy local produce. It is so exciting to meet a professional business-women like Kylie Cassidy. Kylie has a degree in business and 20 years-experience in supply chain, demand planning, production planning, management accounting and sales & operational planning and since moving to Brisbane in 2011 Kylie has gained experience in many of the successful local agribusiness companies including Harvest Freshcuts (in both retail salad, mango and avocado businesses) and Buderim Ginger (in both ginger and macadamia

Personally, as husband and wife, Kylie and Scott together have 4 children under 14 years old which makes for a hectic weekly schedule and balancing act between work and play. Kylie Said, “We are a local family and we wanted to use our experience to provide quality healthy produce for our community,” She said. “Our focus is to promote a healthy lifestyle for kids and adults and support local farmers by sourcing and selling their products at a fair price to support the farmer and community. We have been using social media to ask what the community would like us to offer and many people have said that they would like more organic options.”

I was rather impressed when Kylie presented The Barnyard Market & Café Business Plan to me which clearly defined this amazing and unique concept. I have taken a short exert from the Business Plan summary. It reads, “Sourcing fresh quality produce from our established relationship with local growers and recipes from our grandmother’s kitchen’s combined with old world styling and charm, we will deliver a shopping and dining experience

for our customers that takes them on a journey through the farm gate.” I think that this sums up the intention of Kylie and Scott.

Kylie said, “We have such a huge selection of farm produce in our local region and we want to provide sustainable quality food and make sure that the farmer achieves financial reward for their quality product.”

The Barnyard Market and Café will focus on a 7-day fruit and vegetable produce including supplying organic eggs, milk and dairy products. Kylie has also focussed on building what Kylie terms, ethical trade partnerships with a regional honey producers and beverage suppliers. The Barnyard will provide a smart and exciting café menu supported by the latest Merlot Organic Coffee Blend. The Barnyard is serving fresh juice, yummy smoothies, breaky toast, open grills, salads, cookies, muffins and croissants all week. One of the highlights will be The Barnyard Sunday Family BBQ Breakfast every Sunday from 7am.

Kylie was quick to point out that sometimes what people say they want and what they actually purchase can vary.

Kylie said, “We will see how it all goes and will be certainly ready to massage our products based on the market needs, however what is evident is that people expect quality.”

Dixon Court is using its annual Christmas Lights display to raise donations and awareness for the Starlight Foundation and to bring a little bit of brightness “and craziness” into a local youngster’s life.

Local resident Karen English said “As well as our usual Christmas lights display we have some photo boards for people to come and have some fun with.”

“We’d love to show our support for families and be able to thank the Starlight Foundation for the amazing work they do with sick children.”

New business to the Beachmere area, Acreage and Lifestyle Property, are also embracing the caring Christmas theme instigating the first annual Christmas Toy Drive.

Carolyn Drane, Principal, said “Christmas can be a difficult time of year for families in need and we wanted to ensure families in Beachmere who were doing it tough had some toys for the children to enjoy.”

Beachmere Area Network Group committee member, Robyn Hansen, has taken the caring Christmas theme to the seniors in the area by organising small food hampers.

“It is always nice to receive a gift at Christmas but, for some, it is the basics that are needed. We wanted to give some of our seniors a little something and decided if we can help out with a small Christmas hamper that would be best.”

Whether it is the young, the elderly or those in need, Beachmere locals are reaching out. As Karen English says, “Beachmere does so many great things in its little community. We really love this town.”

Change of roles at beachmere neighbourhood watch Lyn Burgess has taken over the role of President of the very popular Beachmere Neighbourhood Watch.

Lyn has previously held the positions of Secretary and Treasurer and has taken over the role as President due to the prolonged ill health of Norm Shoveller.

Norm was on the inaugural committee and has filled the position of President for the past 22 years.

Lyn said, “I am looking forward to taking on the role. Neighbourhood Watch is such an important part of the community. It keeps people informed and gives them a voice – an opportunity to discuss local events.”

Beachmere Neighborhood Watch Committee Police Liaison Officer, Clair Parsons said “Norm Shoveller has done a great job in establishing and promoting Neighbourhood Watch in Beachmere.

We thank him for his past efforts and look forward to seeing him at future Neighbourhood Watch meetings.”

Beachmere Neighbourhood Watch usually meet on the third Thursday of each month at 9am at Beachmere Activity Ctr in Biggs Ave. However, the December meeting will be held on Thursday, 14 December and will include a festive morning tea.

“We are arranging officers from various government departments, like Centrelink, to be available as well as Meals on Wheels and Centacare.”

“Loneliness is a problem as well, and we want to encourage people to get out of their homes and meet others.”

U3A is now closed for summer holidays until Term 1 commences on Monday 29th January next year This year has been the 25th Anniversary of U3A offering “Learning for Fun” on Bribie Island, and next year will set new records for student numbers and classes on offer.

Enrolment for all Term 1 classes will take place at the U3A Centre in the Recreation Hall on First Avenue on Saturday 20th January and Wednesday 24th January 2018 from 9am till noon.

As well as classes held at U3A Centre there are regular bus trips to see Stage performances and Musicals in Brisbane.

This enthusiastic Theatre Group has been run for many years by long serving U3A Life Member Annie Bunn, whole dedicated service was recognised at an end of year function.

The U3A Theatre Group trips will continue under new leadership next year starting with “Rocky Horror Show” and “Aladdin” plus

SOUP, SWAG & SONG SLEEPOUT UNDER THE STARS Last Friday night a group of 40 Bribie Business leaders came together to support their local chaplains and Its subsidiary group BIKES (Bribie Island Kids Educational Support). After registering to sleep out at a top secret Location participants were told the day prior to assemble at the beautiful Bribie Art Centre Courtyard. Armed with only sleeping bags, cardboard was distributed to participants to help with

bedding and the 40 guests settled in for the night. The Celtic Island Fiddlers welcomed the group and then Mic Early and John Te-Annie entertained the crowd around the fireplace. The Art Centre, Bribie RSL, Bongaree Hot Bread Bakery, Wrights Fruit Barn and Cake it to the Limit were all sponsors of the night, as was the Coffee Caddie who rolled in at 5am with much needed refreshments.

In a wonderful demonstration of community generosity over $5,600 was raised.

Once again a new year is heading our way, which will mean adverts for improving your fitness are going to be everywhere you look. So I’m getting in early! Because you may not know but every year, actually twice a year, Fit Beyond 50 runs a 12 week challenge.

But how do you know that our challenges work? And would they work for you, change your lifestyle, your body and your health? Well I can prove they work by showing you the results of two participants in our last challenge and you can check out more on our website www. fitbeyond50.net.au.

First off I want to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy 2018!

Now in the fitness industry, 12 week challenges are as common as a tick on a possums butt. There are muscle gaining challenges, push up and squat challenges, and 8 week challenges (which, in my book, are run by trainers who are too lazy to motivate clients for the full 12 weeks) and don’t forget the ones that I find most cringe worthy, the bikini body challenges. Really Bikini Body? Why is it assumed that all women desire to wear a bikini? What about some budgie smuggling challenges for the blokes? Or how about As Firm as a Fireman challenge? Now you are talking.

So yes we do have 12 week challenges and I love them because we get to see the wonderful results that our real clients (not pretend clients photos taken from the internet) achieve in the real world, eating a lot of real food. What makes our challenges different are that they are not just about weight loss because we KNOW that will happen when the participants do what we ask them to do. Our challenges include fitness tests, as this is the

Senior Gentle Exercises Towel Time Before You Start go and Grab A Small Towel!

Have a stable high backed chair or kitchen bench near for balance and support. Please wear flat bottomed shoes or sandals with a back strap so they can’t flick off. If you feel uncomfortable or concerned about any of these movements do not do them or stop! Don’t try these exercises alone if you concerned or are unsure of your ability to complete them. Make sure you have a stable friend or family member on hand when you begin to practice these exercises. Only ever move at a speed that feels comfortable for YOU. Start slowly with each exercise until you become used to exercises, remember that you are asking your body to do something new. You may be comfortable only performing one of the exercises and not be comfortable doing the others. That is ok! Everyone’s body reacts differently to different movements. Never do something that you are nervous about by yourself. If you are at all worried please have a helpful, stable person around to make you feel more confident and secure.

Let’s get started!

Take each exercise slowly and carefully and only complete as many times as you are comfortable with! If possible make sure someone is with you for support. Remember exercising does become easier if it is done regularly and small changes can make a big difference. Even practicing only one exercise a day will help improve your fitness. So use your chair, put on your flat bottomed secure shoes, ask a stable family member or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.ber or friend to help if you want to and let’s start.

TOWEL TANGO

Standing tall, with your shoulders back, stretch the towel horizontally with your hands grabbing both ends and hold the towel close to your chest front of your chest. Step forward with your right leg and bend at the knee.

Straighten the other leg.

Push your arms and the towel forward at the same time.

Step back to the starting position and repeat with the other leg.

Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg.

Rest

TOWEL TWIRLS

Stand in a place where you have plenty of room around you.

Hold one end of the small towel with your right hand and keeping your arm straight make circular movements as fast as you comfortably can with your right arm, twirl the towel clockwise. Repeat with your left hand.

Then taking the towel in your right hand again twirl the towel counter clockwise.

Repeat with your left hand. Only do as many as is comfortable for you up to 10 times with each arm. Rest

TOWEL TOE TAPS

If you are feel unstable when standing on one foot please stand next to the kitchen bench or a stable chair for support if needed. Stand tall with your shoulders back and your feet shoulder width apart. Hold the towel with both hands and stretch your arms straight in front at shoulder height. Holding the upper corners of the towel lift your right foot to touch the lower part of the towel or as close to the corner as you can comfortably reach.

Return to starting position and repeat with your left foot. Perform as many as you are comfortable doing up to 10 times with each leg. Rest

TOWEL TOSS

Sitting or standing Stand or sit face to face with a friend or partner.

Tie a knot in the middle of the towel.

Gently throw the towel to each other.

Begin with a short throwing distance and then slowly move further apart.

If anyone drops the towel they must be the one to pick it up :) Repeat as many times as you both feel comfortable doing up to 10 throws each.

The main reason why Trish couldn’t lose weight before the challenge was, like most ladies we meet, Trish wasn’t eating enough and once we increased her food the weight fell off. Since we don’t let our clients overtrain she wasn’t made to spend endless hours exercising and the next thing you know 12 weeks is over and she is under her goal weight after eating more food than she has in years.

Now Fit Beyond 50 is definitely not just for the over 50’s and so we also had Rick participating in the challenge. Rick placed second because our challenges are based on percentage of bodyweight lost.

what we asked, drank more water and started exercising more because his goal was to drop bodyfat and get his fitness back.

Apart from the obvious fat loss, gaining fitness is exactly what Rick did! He started the challenge being able to do 22 push ups on his toes and went on to be able to pump out 56 in a minute – actually he now does 28 clapping push ups in a minute without breaking a sweat!

Of course Trish and Rick are not the only participants of our 2017 Spring Into Summer challenge, there were 10 participants ranging in age from 19 to 69! Which meant that the weight loss ranges and fitness changes were as different as the people in the challenge. The total lost by the 10 participants was a whopping 81.7kgs. That’s a whole

Bring a plate!

Festive foods with a healthy twist

Some ideas are:

It’s that time of year. Endless Christmas functions. Work party. Neighbourhood barbecue. Family get togethers. ‘Bring a plate’ they said. Pressure’s on. Festive food.

It’s got to look good and be extra exciting.

After all it is Christmas. Sugar laden, lollies, candy canes, white Christmas, rum balls, cakes, pavalovas, chips, chocolate, famous family traditional cooking. Lots of carbs and fats. Christmas day afternoon, everyone is in a food coma by mid afternoon from over indulging.

Or simply arrange a platter of red and green fruit.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Be inspiring and bring a healthy plate. At least you know there will be something healthy you can have. Let’s face it, anything red and green ticks the boxes for Christmas themed food. When you think about it there are so many options that are brightly coloured healthy options provided by nature. Presentation is the key. Arrange foods into a Christmas tree shape, use cutters such as star shapes.

Red foods- red capsicum, tomatoes, chilli, radish, red apple, strawberries, raspberries, watermelon, cherries, goji berries.

Green foods- green capsicum, broccoli, beans, peas, avocado, celery, basil, mint, parsley (any fresh herbs!), zucchini, lettuce, spinach, kale, leek, rocket, asparagus, pesto, pepitas, kiwi fruit, grapes, green apple.

Cut flatbread (wrap/tortilla) into Christmas tree shapes or even just triangles. Spread with mashed avocado. Sprinkle with diced red capsicum.

On mini skewers layer green grapes, slice banana, strawberry and a sneaky mini white marshmallow on top for grinches in santa hats.

Layer sliced roma tomatoes, a basil leaf and a ball of bocconcini.

Bring a salad of nicely arranged red and green salad vegetables.

Some tips to avoid over indulgence or to counteract the effects: - Everything in moderation - Support your liver, gut, gallbladder and detoxification pathways with St. Mary’s Thistle - Include protein and good fat at each meal to maximise energy and feeling of fullness - Drink plenty of water - Digestive enzymes can assist with over indulgence of disagreeable foods - Ginger can assist with nausea - Chamomile and peppermint tea are soothing and calming on the digestion - Slippery elm can soothe, coat and protect the digestive tract.

We lived in an old bush farmhouse and we made our own electricity, so at night, usually at about nine o’clock the generator [ known as the ‘ Perkins ‘ ] was turned off. I loved the way the lamplight and the candle light played on the faces of my Mother, Grand- Mother and on the faces of our neighbours gathered around the pianola ; this light even made the rough faces of our farmers look gentle.

A couple of nights before Christmas Night, we all went in our Humber Snipe into town to look at the Council Christmas lights in the main street, because the Council had town-power all the time, so they could do the lights.

The town looked magical bathed in these colours of Christmas, red and white and green, and , of course, there was a need to be ‘ sociable ‘ in the town pub, for a little while. I learnt about ‘ pub raspberry ‘ during these wonderful times just before Christmas Day.

From the time when events first registered in a young mind, the sight of a colourful, sparkling tree in the front room of an old, bush, family house in Northern South Australia, seemed like a magic carpet ride to another place where almost anything wished for could happen !

As long as you were good !

That was the stick, wielded unmercifully by my Grand Mother. You had to be good, otherwise Father Christmas would not come !! And, Oh the horror !! The very thought of not being a part of that wonderful experience was the catalyst for trying to be ‘ good ‘ for most of December, especially when school holidays began.

And being good was hard, because no matter how hard you tried, the only person who knew what was ‘good ‘ and what was ‘ not good ‘ was my Grand Mother !!

Nevertheless, life in those days revolved around the merciless, constant demands of farming life ; there was no time for frivolous stuff. Chooks had to be fed, eggs had to be gathered, early in the morning and special care had to be taken when cleaning out egg boxes, because brown snakes loved living in them !! Or rather, brown snakes liked the eggs that were in the egg boxes…I used to wear a pair of my Father’s old welding gloves.

The house cows had to be milked, butter had to be made, apricots, nectarines and peaches had to be collected from the fruit trees around the place, and, eating more than one or two of these delicious fruits qualified as being ‘ not good ‘ in the Father Christmas stakes !! I tried the ‘ dog ate the apricots ‘ story and that was a lead balloon !! Even my beautiful dog was cranky with me.

Preserving of these fruits happened in the kitchen and then, once bottled all the jars of fruit would be taken down into the cellar, where delicious and mysterious things existed ; including

a special jar of medicine for my Grand Father’s nerves !! His face got a bit red after he drank some of that, but he smiled a lot, even when it didn’t rain…so it must have been good medicine.

Using an indelible pencil, I wrote to Father Christmas, asking him if his reindeers knew where we lived in the bush and if possible, could ‘ I please have a Hornby train set ‘, and, that I had been good because my Grand Mother had said I had…..probably because I milked the house cows and made the butter !! I left my letter at the Church after Sunday School, because Father Christmas had helpers who came to churches to gather the letters from ‘ bush kids ‘.

Soon wonderful, colourful, glittering balls and ropes appeared in the front lounge room, red and white and green ; no one was ever allowed in the front lounge room so I knew that it was getting close to the ‘ special ‘ day when I saw these things, plus, my Father and his friend Max had brought a Christmas Tree from town, although it took a bit longer than we thought, because Max and Dad had to have a few ‘ sociable ‘ beers at the Pub. The tree had fallen off the back of the ute, once, going across the Northern Railway line, but it still looked alright to me, although, Grand Mother had that ‘ look ‘ on her face.

Going to bed each night was a splendid adventure, I could look at the stars out of my window and imagine reindeers and sleighs flying across the star light…my dog and I sat quietly on the end of my bed, we could see the local church, just, and we were watching for the Christmas Fairies to come and pick up our letters.

Wodan, my German Shepherd would go to sleep before me and both of us missed the fairies, although I told him about the fairies and what they were doing. It was a special secret about Christmas that we kept…my dog Wodan and me.

There was a calendar on the kitchen wall, given to us by the local grain company, and all the days of Christmas were marked by my Mother, with little notes to herself about what must be done. I watched that calendar…I really did… hoping to make the days go faster.

Neighbours and friends would come to our place in the evenings in December, some brought Christmas cake, others brought wonderful mysterious parcels to go under the Christmas Tree : we all gathered in the front room of the old house and my Mother would play on our pianola…it played itself really, Mum just did the pedals !! Beautiful songs were sung, they were called Christmas Carols and, even today, Silent Night, sung and

At this time and in this place, people were kind to each other, they cared for each other. It was the lights, the colours, the songs and the gentle care people had for each other in this bush community, living in this harsh, demanding land that fixed Christmas, in my mind, as a wonderful time… magical kind of describes it.

The night before Christmas, I remember was hot, my Mother and Father were worried about ‘ bush fires ‘, Wodan and I stayed awake for a while, looking out of the window, it was moonlight and we could see all the way to the Church down to the right and to Halloran’s Creek on the left, and, of course, the heavens and stars of an Australian Christmas night, in the bush, without the light spill from the cities, were so close you could almost touch them ; I know I could hear the stars tinkling.

Susanne received her award at the Bribie Toastmasters meeting on the 21st of November just before she left to travel to Adelaide to live, but the great thing about being a Toastmaster is that you can enjoy the friendships and the meetings of any club around the world so it won’t be too long before Susanne is making new friends and giving more amazing speeches at her new toastmasters club in Adelaide.

As all clubs are part of Toastmasters International, members can travel the world and pop into any local club to catch up with old friends and make new ones.

Like all Toastmasters clubs, Bribie Toastmasters provide a mutually supportive and positive learning environment in which every individual member has the opportunity to develop oral communication and leadership skills, which in turn foster selfconfidence and personal growth.

If you would like to learn to speak with confidence in any situation then Bribie Toastmasters is the club for you.

Meetings are held in the ANZAC room of the Bribie Island RSL at 7pm on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month, the next meeting will be the first for 2018 and will be held on January 16th 2018.

Applications open for Harmony Day celebrations

A splendid day followed, food, Christmas Crackers, plum pudding with a sixpence in it ! And I found it !!

My family sang, they drank, the pianola rocked…the heat hung menacingly over us all and my Father and his neighbours had trucks out the front with back pack sprays and shovels on the back, waiting for a fire…that never came. But, no matter who you were, everybody was ready to help, everyone had a job to do in case of fire, all of us.

Moreton Bay Regional Council is offering community groups grants of up to $1,000 to help celebrate Harmony Day 2018 and the region’s rich cultural diversity.

On that wonderful Christmas Day the fire never came.

My Aunt Gladice sang ‘ Away in Manger ‘ with a voice that stunned me in my tracks with its beauty and depth ; there was a silence in our place when she finished her last note. Then our neighbour, Horace [ Horry, usually ! sang ‘ It’s a long way to Tipperary ‘, that wasn’t so flash !!

These are all memories of a Christmas, imprinted on the mind of a young person from the Australian bush.

A time from long ago in an Australia that no longer exists.

But what does exist is the goodwill, the peace and the sheer, wondrous beauty of Christmas, and the promises it makes to us all.

A promise of peace, goodwill and marvellous good fortune to be alive at this time.

Cranky Lizard wishes you all, every single one of you, who-ever you are, and what-ever you do, that same promise.

May your life be peaceful and happy and may you live with goodwill towards your fellow humans.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said grant applications opened on December 1 to February 1 for eligible community groups and organisations to apply for assistance for Harmony Day events, workshops and activities.

“We’re offering community grants of up to $1,000 for local groups and organisations who want to join in the 2018 Harmony Day celebrations on March 21,” Mayor Sutherland said.

“Last year, community groups from across the region hosted an impressive range of activities, from cross-cultural sports days and West African music workshops to cultural dance shows and a community barbecue.

Mayor Sutherland said with one in every five residents born overseas, representing more than 170 nationalities and speaking 140 different languages, Harmony Day was a great chance to celebrate the Moreton Bay Region’s rich cultural diversity.

“Our region is one of the fastest growing and culturally diverse areas in Australia, and I look forward to seeing the wide range of activities put forward for grant funding.

“Harmony Day is a great opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate our different cultural backgrounds and drive home the message that ‘everybody belongs’ in Moreton Bay.” Grant applications for Harmony Day will be open to eligible community groups and organisations from December 1 to February 1.

5 tips on finding a rental property that’s perfect for you

now. Really analyse your budget and see if there is any incidental money in there that’s currently being wasted. An extra $10 - $50 a week could really boost your result and give you anything from a balcony to an extra bedroom. The best way to really connect to your budget is to document it. You could use a basic spreadsheet, that outlines your current income and expenses and tells you how much money – if any – you have leftover each month. There are also a number of really useful personal budgeting apps out there that help you track your spending and even encourage you to save.

2. Prioritise what you need

Renting used to be considered an option only used by those who couldn’t afford to buy property. However, times have changed and today the benefits are far more comprehensive. Renting allows you to live to a standard you may not be able to afford to buy right now. It also buys you a lifestyle that you may only want or need for a short period of your life – such as an inner-city warehouse conversion, a cottage in the country, or a studio space in a foreign city.

Because renting is much more flexible than buying, you have the freedom to be specific about what you want. Take some time to think things through first and follow these 5 tips on finding a rental property that’s perfect for you. You’ll be living in your dream home before you know it!

1. Know your budget This should be the very first thing you work out, before anything else. But don’t just think about what you can afford right

Chances are you’ll need what you have now and a little more, or a little less – depending on why you’re moving. Be clear - before you start looking for a rental property - about what you need. You may just instinctively look for a rental property in the same location you’re in now, but is that still the best location for you? Maybe you have a different job now, or something new in your life that has you spending more time elsewhere. Searching for a new rental property does not only provide you with the chance to try out a different home environment, you can also take on a different lifestyle. The day to day experiences of living in the suburbs, compared to an

It’s best to start with a decent list of say 5 to 7 suburbs, so that you can scale back as you search. When you’re clear about your budget and what you need, it won’t take long for you to refine it down to just 1 or 2 locations, as you discover the others just don’t offer what you need, within your budget.

4. Use Filters and Saved Searches When searching online there are loads of tools that make the process super focused and organised for you. Because you did your budget you know the maximum amount you can pay per week. You prioritised what you need, so you know how many bedrooms, bathrooms, car spaces and what indoor and outdoor features you might like and you have your shortlist of locations. Now you can begin the search! Most property websites will allow you to create a rental property custom search with all of this information, using ‘filters’ or ‘refinements’. You can then save that search, or create alerts so you get emails when properties fitting your specific criteria are listed. This will save you a huge amount of time and also help you to refine things as you learn more about the locations and price bracket you’re searching in. In

the first day of searching you will learn for example that $250 a week will not rent you a 5-bedroom house in the inner city, or an apartment with a rooftop pool. You may discover however that your budget of $400 could actually get you much more than you thought it would.

5. Start Early and Do Your Research First As soon as you know you have to move, you should start researching the market.

There are lots of shonky listings out there and the more research you do, the better equipped you will be to spot them. Starting your search early gives you time to see the patterns in the market. You will see new properties come onto the market and can refine your search terms as you learn more about what’s available and what the current prices are. It may be that most properties are marked as ‘Available Now’ which means things could move pretty fast. Alternatively, availability dates may be a few weeks away, giving you time to book in for viewings, make a plan about seeing a few properties in the same area on the same day and get your paperwork together, in case you want to apply for the property immediately after inspecting it.

The Bribie Island RSL’s auditorium was filled to near capacity last month when the Bribie Island Probus Club Inc’s guest speaker, Professor Roly Sussex, addressed club members and members of the public.

The club’s President, David Marquet, said that pre-event publicity published in Bribie Island & Surrounds had ensured a record meeting attendance. “Roly Sussex is an extremely popular public speaker and our club is pleased to have given locals an

opportunity to hear him speak on one of his contemporary topics”, he said.

This fantastic Christmas Tradition was started in 1994 and has become a fixture in Bribie’s December Christmas Calendar.

Ken Burgess and his wonderful helpers will once again don their Christmas costumes and entertain all who gather along the banks of the canal.

Santa is taking some time out from his busy Christmas preparations for a special trip to Bribie on Christmas Eve. The big man and his elves have left the reindeer at

Bribie Island Bowls Club is happy to continue their generous support by supplying all of the lollies that these Christmas angels will be throwing out during their journey.

This year the event is scheduled to take place between 4pm and 6pm on Sunday the 24th of December. Santa starts his trip near the locked gates and will then head east up the southern side of the canal taking an anti clockwise route. During this trip they will pass canals along Dolphin, Oleander, Pentas and Jacaranda Drives, Hoya and Barklya Cresents and Pheonix, Alamanda and Azalea Avenues. The round trip should get them back to the lock gates by 6pm.

There are several bridges and grassy banks from which you can watch Santa go by, so make sure you pop on down to the canal to wave as Santa cruises past dispensing his Christmas joy, as well as bags full of lollies. This event is open to everyone on Bribie so bring your children and grandchildren down for an afternoon of fun before you head off to look at the Christmas lights.

Marvels first superhero team was ‘The fantastic Four#1’ published in 1961, this book helped the company make an opening into the world. Marvel comics then made itself a reputation for focusing on characterisation and adult issues to a greater extent than most superhero comics before them. This was applied to ‘The Amazing Spiderman’, which turned out to be Marvels most successful comic and then went on to be made into a couple of amazing movies.

The hype over Marvel movies has grown over the years, as Marvel tends to make their movies humour filled and to appeal to many audiences. These movies appeal mostly to “Nerds” or “geeks” as they are usually fantasy filled and usually appeal more to their type of movies.

Like Marvel, Dc comics is a publishing company founded by Malcom WheelerNicholson in 1934. Dc has created many comics and a few movies, for years there has been rivalry between the two companies. They have always tried to outshine the other, when ‘The fantastic four’ came out in 1961 Dc ignored the initial success of the comic. However, the senior Dc staff were reportedly confused at how such a small publishing house was achieving this increasingly threatening commercial strength. Straight Homophobia

Recently, the plebiscite results, for same sex marriage in Australia, were collected and released. The result was an astounding sixty-one to thirty-nine for yes and no respectively. Though, with this large influence in the government’s consideration on the decision, it brings attentions (that were previously focused on convincing the government to send out a plebiscite) to the smaller and lesser-acknowledged inequalities concerning the LGBTQIA+ community in our society today. One of these inequalities, being the usually disregarded term ‘straight’ in reference to heterosexuals.

The usage of straight as a reference to those that are attracted to exclusively the opposite sex originated in the mid twentieth century and was first adapted from the phrase: “to go straight” which means to stop committing homosexual intercourse. “Go straight” was further adapted as a phrase used as casual slang for stopping consumption of drugs, stopping dishonesty and also ‘undoing’ being homosexual.

The history of this term leaves one to

wonder if this casual word is in fact a homophobic slur. Among the many definitions of “go straight” multiple involve putting a stop to an activity commonly acknowledged as negative, while converting to heterosexuality is also on the list. This inclusion of homosexuality suggests that it is an act to be associated with, and as bad as, thievery or illegal drug consumption, instead of what it truly is: loving people who just so happen to share a few characteristics, such as gender.

You may be thinking, well, just because the term go straight implies negative ideals surrounding homosexuality doesn’t mean that the referencing of heterosexuals as straight supports these claims, well in reality it is quite the contrary. The constant referral to heterosexuality as “being straight” implies similar concepts in our evolved society. This implies that heterosexuality is the solution to the aforementioned crimes and frowned upon actions, such as homosexuality.

Furthermore, this implies that homosexuals are a problem that should be fixed instead of belonging in society, as they should.

Society is, to say least, impressionable.

Similar to the spreading of the term straight, raising awareness of the issue can be just as easily adopted by the world. If you are mentioning your sexuality (if you are in fact a heterosexual) simply phrase it not as straight, but in any other way that communicate the same idea. If someone else uses the term straight, simply explain the true meaning behind the slur. If you wish to take this form of inequality by the ear and throw it as far away as possible, then even post something on the media to promote removal of the term straight from the average person’s casual vocabulary.

Simply try your hardest to communicate to the world that straight (in the context of sexuality) should be regarded as a homophobic term instead of the currently believed to be neutral term.

Ahead of summer, Westpac has released findings from its Water Safety Survey showing more than half of Australian parents with children aged two to eight (55.8%) would not know the lifesaving CPR instructions needed if they were faced with a drowning emergency.

CPR Kids founder and paediatric nurse Sarah Hunstead said it’s common for parents to have misconceptions about water safety, which is why education about preventive measures and the steps for resuscitation can mean the difference between life and death.

While many Australian parents are aware of the importance of not waiting for paramedics to arrive in the event of a child drowning (92%), survey results show a lack of awareness about how to respond with correct CPR procedures for children. Two thirds of parents surveyed are unaware of the correct compression to breath ratio, a vital element of paediatric CPRi.

“I meet so many parents who have been in a serious situation and wish they knew at least the basic steps. The Westpac Rescue Rashie is such a smart and practical design. It helps parents by taking them through lifesaving CPR steps while the emergency services make their way to the scene,” Sarah said.

Some parents also have misconceptions about water safety; with over a third believing if their child can swim they are at a reduced risk of drowning and almost a third believing the first sign of a child drowning is splashingi.

Ahead of the peak month for drowning in Australia, Westpac is launching the Westpac Rescue Rashie as part of a new initiative to promote summer safety awareness. Westpac State General Manager QLD, Greg Crocombe, said Rescue Rashies were born earlier this year when Westpac survey results showed two in three Australian parents admit they would have to search for CPR instructions on their smartphone in an emergency.

“Westpac has a long history of helping to save Australian lives through our 44-year partnership with the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service, and this summer we wanted to do something more to help educate Queensland parents about water safety and potentially save lives,” Mr Crocombe said. “Our research shows Queensland parents need extra support and education when it comes to knowing what to do in a drowning emergency. It is a scenario deeply feared but one all parents we need to be prepared for. “In partnership with CPR Kids, we are proud to provide parents with the Westpac Rescue Rashie, which gives them much needed information and support at a time when it is needed the most,” Mr Crocombe said. Former Olympic swimmer, ironman and father of two, Ky Hurst said he knows all too well how quickly things can turn to tragedy in the water and the importance of reacting quickly in an emergency.

“As much as I love the water and have spent my life around it, my wife and I know that accidents can happen, which is why water safety is number one when it comes to our children,” Ky said.

“I loved the idea of the Westpac Rescue Rashie as soon as I saw it. It’s so simple.

The instructions on the front and the bright red colour serve as a constant reminder of how to keep your children safe should the worst case scenario become reality,” Ky said.

To highlight the importance of CPR knowledge, Westpac has pledged to provide free CPR training for its 33,000 staff, meaning a great many will be prepared to help save a life in an emergency.

Westpac Rescue Rashies are available for $35 each, with proceeds going to Take Heart Australia to fund vital CPR training.

The Steve Aczel (The Axe) story by doing so missed out on a spot for the Commonwealth Games team.

At 19, Steve won the Australian lightheavyweight title and the Australasian light-heavyweight title. At 20, Steve Aczel won 10 out of 11 of his first professional fights by KO, and in England the British Commonwealth light-heavyweight title with a round three KO over Max Smith in London. Steve said they booed and booed

Today Steve and his wife Jan run a little plastering business and keep themselves occupied with a large family contingent on and around Bribie Island.

Steve Knocking out Steve Cansdell and Steve’s Commonwealth cup light-heavyweight division and tenth in the world as a heavyweight and that was in the era of Ali, Frasier, Foreman and Aussie Joe Bugner. He was inducted into the Queensland boxing Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Australian boxing Hall of Fame in 2011.

Steve Aczel was born in Hungary in 1954 during a very hostile time for some countries in Europe. Steve’s father smuggled the family across the border and into Austria because the communists in Hungary at the time had marked Steve’s dad as a marked man because of his involvement with the underground movement.

Before the end of 1956 they arrived in Melbourne and resided in Westall, a working class south-eastern suburb. When he was in his early teens he was bullied at school because he was big for his age and it was the “in” thing to do, pick on the big kid. That was until he was 15 and started to go to the boxing gym and learnt how to box. One by one the bullies began to fall. As Steve said: “It felt nice, seeing them drop.”

He went on to perfect his talents after stints as a Victoria Police cadet and a bank employee. He didn’t pursue these careers for long because they interfered with his training. He became the under-16 Victorian amateur state light-heavyweight champion.

He also became the senior state champion and Australian open lightweight champion, taking on an opponent, Don Cross, years his senior and who had held the title for five years.

At the age of 17 Steve became the Oceania Games light-heavyweight champion. He had fights in Australia, the Pacific Islands and New Zealand before turning pro at 19 and

I first met Steve about 20 years ago (he is my son Brett’s, brother in law). And the very first thing I remember was his voice.

It was at a function at his mother in laws place in Cranbourne, Victoria with about 50 odd people in attendance with most of them having a chat and over all the noise all you could hear was that “VOICE” and it hasn’t changed until today. He said to my son, looking straight at me “who’s this free loader?” I was taken back a bit but now it doesn’t bother me because he says it to everyone.

Steve retired at 30, after 75 amateur and pro fights, winning 58 by KO. His fastest KO was eight seconds into the first round and most fights those days were over 15 rounds.

Dad Led the way

During his time after boxing Steve has been very versatile, managing the Bribie Island hotel for a while and a couple of “shady” illegal joints in the Valley. Steve is married to wife Jan and they have two sons, Steve and Jay, who are both married and have children of their own. Steve and Jan live in Woorim and have been there for many years.

The odd thing about this fight is that it was the first ever Commonwealth title fight and there wasn’t a cup produced (someone had forgot to mint one), so they presented Steve with the last ever Empire light-heavyweight cup.

At 45, Steve met a character named Fred Brophy (we all know who Fred is don’t we.

He is the tent boxing king of the world).

They are now great mates and Steve attends most fight nights to give Fred a hand (usually training the challengers on how not to get hit). It doesn’t work most times and the pour guys wonder what they just walked into.

Steve also won the Australian heavyweight title the same year. His rankings were always high, never out of the top two or three in the divisions he fought in and at 26 he won the Orient and Pacific light-heavyweight title and the Australian light-heavyweight championship again.

Fred actually talked the “Axe” (Steve’s nickname) into having a couple of fights, but Steve tells me they might have been setups.

Both boys were young pros and Steve said one bloke hit him 120 times in the first round, talk about rapid fire. I outsmarted both of them in the end. Steve Today Steve also has a couple of other little catch phrases such as “if you don’t watch out I’ll punch you in the throat.” But if you really get under his skin, he’ll say something about you so you can hear it and say “sorry, mate, I was just thinking out loud.” People don’t know how to take it, but for those who know the man, love it.

As I said before, we are both members of rather large extended family and my two little granddaughters can’t wait to see their “uncle” Steve when he comes a visiting and they give him heaps. I won’t repeat what he calls them, but they love it, as does all the kids in the family. I have never met a more family friendly guy, except for me of course!

Just a little by-line, Steve Aczel and Aussie Joe Bugner, fled the same country and now both live in Queensland. Steve on Bribie and Joe on the Gold Coast and they have never met each other. This will be my next challenge.

Christmas Traditions around the world When the hustle and bustle of Christmas finally rolls around and annual traditions are usually completed without even being thought about. In Australia, families are busy organising food and presents for the big holiday.

Prawns and lobster sell out quickly with such a high demand from locals and many families organise camping trips or a beach day to celebrate Christmas. Religious or not, these simple traditions that occur have a meaning specific to each individual person, family and country.

The traditions that occur during Christmas and the month leading up to it are influenced by a multitude of factor including religion, cultural background, home country and historical background. Each country has its own spin on events that occur on the 25th of December, making Christmas a holiday celebrated across the world in many different styles. For example, in Japan Christmas Day is not viewed as a religious day, as it is in many western countries but is celebrated as a day of happiness and romance. To the Japanese, Christmas is almost the equivalent to Valentine’s Day, love for one and other being largely celebrated rather than a focus on god. An interesting tradition in Japan is one involving the food eaten on Christmas, straying away from turkey or pudding many households eat fried chicken on Christmas, one of the many traditions setting Japan apart from other

countries. In Finland, Christmas celebrations are taken above and beyond, celebrations last roughly for two weeks after the actual holiday- with festive cheer being happily embraced. Many people take these two weeks to visit family and celebrate their fortune of the year. A very famous tradition that people in Finland participate in is putting up their Christmas tree on the 24th of December.

Whereas many people decorate their tree at the start of December, in Finland Christmas Eve is the night reserved for placing the star at the top of the tree. Russia refers to the man in red as Dez Moroz which in English translates to Grandfather Frost rather than Santa Claus this being a tradition that ties back in the history of Russia and their culture surrounding Christmas. In India pine trees are not decorated rather banana trees and mango trees are adorned with ornaments by Christian followers. Jamaica focuses heavily on Christmas Eve rather than Christmas Day with every town hosting a ‘Grand Market’ event where food and entertainment are the main focus. All across the world the 25th of December is an important day no matter how it is celebrated. The different traditions that occur add to the diversity and importance of the holiday loved by many and these traditions both old and new show cultural differences between countries. It is these wonderful differences that help make up this largely celebrated and loved holiday.

Christmas Orphans

[ Please Note : It is not a good idea, nor is it recommended by the Author, for anyone to try and produce the Christmas Pudding Sauce recipe contained in this tale. The recipe sort of works, but has the curious effect of rendering the pudding irrelevant!! ] This is a story about how some things are in the Australian Bush at Christmas time.

The place is irrelevant. The time is obvious and the place could be anywhere in that wonderful, vast, heartbreaking place, The Outback.

And, as in many cases, the story has it genesis in the events surrounding the people who live in remote places and know the meaning of loneliness and how to deal with it !! This particular tale kicked off in the late 1950’s and carried on until 2002…and maybe, somewhere it is still happening ?

Apart from the cattle and sheep stations, which surround local regional communities, the populations of such communities begin to drain away in the weeks before Christmas, as most of the workers in the towns head ‘ home’ for Christmas. It has always been like this, although with the arrival of social media and the internet some of this human drainage has slowed, but not stopped.

Remaining in the towns, were those persons who were considered necessary for the continuing function of the vital community services needed to keep the town up and running, if you know what I mean ?

They were known as the “ Christmas Orphans “.

These people were the nurses, maybe one doctor, a couple of bank johnnies, a copper or two and usually one of the two town

So, a couple of weeks before the Christmas Drain began, the word was spread around the town, the pubs, the banks, the local cricket club, the police station, the railway station etc. ; Christmas Orphans, could come to the station after lunch on Christmas Eve and stay until Boxing Day. Just bring yourself, or a small something if you wished, everything else was already there, beds, showers, tucker and good company. Not much else was needed anyway !!

The youngest of the two coppers, the one who could not play the guitar, had the job of lopping the heads off the three turkeys, dressing them and heaving the insides over behind the engine shed for the dingoes… who would appreciate this gesture, because they had been looking at the turkeys for quite some time – wondering how they could get them.

And the other one was the spare Police wagon, with a radio, in case it was needed back in town or at a crash !!

One of the Governesses at one of the closest cattle stations to town, about 50 kms, had a flash of brilliance one morning whilst making up some extra beds for ringers who had nowhere to go over Christmas – “ Why not invite the Christmas Orphans to come out for Christmas ? “. The owners were all for it, there was plenty of space on the big, wide verandahs, characteristic of all station homesteads in that country – there was plenty of tucker and 50 kms was nothing in that country as far as distance was concerned.

There weren’t many anyway, two young coppers, three nurses, three and a half bank johnnies, one was on probation, one black hander [ the diesel mechanic ] and four spare ringers – it was too far and too hot for their old Toyota to make it safely back to Longreach in Queensland and then back to the station.

Gretel, Hannah and Annabel had a serious tasting session, which resulted in all of them laughing their faces off at absolutely nothing.

Willy, who was ‘ half ‘ the bank johnny, the one on probation, brought his mouth organ – Nancy, the governess whose idea it was in the first place, had a violin, which she could play the hell out of – and one of the coppers had a hidden talent ; he could make a guitar sing.

Christmas Eve on the verandah of the station was as you would expect.

Wilson, the black hander, brought his own Ford 250 with the best sounding V8 for hundreds of kms around…he also had enough tools and welders on it to build a truck, if he had to ?

Ringers in clean, shirts and jeans with wet hair plastered down ; coppers and nurses relaxed lying back on the camp beds, although Annabel caught a couple of glances from the youngest coppers, and, gave them back !!

The Hardchambers, the mob who owned the station, had been convinced by Nancy, their governess, that no one should be lonely or without a place to go at Christmas, which was the reason why the ‘ Orphans ‘ were camping on their verandah and working out with Gretel Hardchamber how they were going to cook the turkeys, set up the tables, bag the puddings and generally help around the place for Christmas.

The proper bank johnnies tried the ‘ Singing Minstrel ‘ episode, accompanied by Nancy, who had her violin begging for more and the ‘ half ‘ bank johnny had his mouth organ sounding like Bob Dylan !

The Christmas turkeys had spent the last two months eating corn behind the house chook yard and all the vegetables would come from the station homestead garden, well those that were left in the garden after the galahs and the corellas had finished with the leafy greens !!

Gretel’s Mother, Hannah, had made the puddings, as she said “ I have been making the bloody things for forty years, a few more won’t hurt. “ They were her own mixture of suet, fruit, rum, flour and some other stuff, as heavy as your average chair, but they were bloody good to eat !!

Annabel, one of the nurses, had her own recipe for the sauce for the Christmas puddings, and she had a practice run in the kitchen on Christmas Eve…condensed milk, warm water, Milo , a solid splosh of rum and a pinch of flour seemed to do the job.

All of these people were a part of a much greater and stronger story : the story of the Australian Outback and what you do and how you live when you are in its arms.

Because it does hold you, it places a small fire in your heart and no matter what you do ,you cannot put that fire out…the spark leaves you when your spirit leaves you…only to join all the other sparkling spirits floating about in the Outback, looking out for each other and the people who live there.

You can hear these sparkling spirits in the cry of the black cockatoo, the howl of the dingoes and soft, susurrations of the desert winds in the she- oaks on the lonely ridges of hard stone – a sound once heard never forgotten.

Marriages came from these first Christmas Orphan verandahs and children came from those marriages, and they, in their turn, in the cycle of life had their own children. I know of a verandah that has stories and memories…I

Psychological Warfare Why is it that each year, our summer of cricket goes hand in hand with a journalistic frenzy on professional sledging?

As a culture, most of us are raised in diverse tough multicultural communities and Inherently Australians do not to take people too seriously. Typically, we are very friendly nation and like to have a joke with each both on and off the paddock. We are also a culture that strives to compete and show the world that Australians work hard, play hard and compete to win. I certainly don’t want to justify inappropriate communication and verbal abuse between each other or across nations, however I will stand behind our proud sporting culture that promotes on-field communications and having a chat with your opponent on the sporting field, sharing banter and stirring the pot.

Perhaps we should define the term Sledging before we progress this commentary. The Oxford Dictionary defines sledging as, “taunting or teasing remark made to an opposing player in order to disturb their concentration.” In a recently published article by Shane Warne (Brisbane Courier Mail, 10th December 2017), Warne wrote, “For mine the art of sledging is all about unsettling your opponent to the point where they lose concentration and focus.

It’s about being subtly clever and humorous rather than loud and bravado. It’s that little word here and there when your opposition least expects it.” We know that there can be a fine line between making a general comment to an opposing player and using language that fulfils that definition of racism and personal verbal abuse.

In the same article above, Shane Warne recalls the time when a notable South African Player had made a public statement about the fact that he had engaged a Sports Psychologist to assist in strengthening his mental attitude when competing against an opposition. Shane Warne already had ‘the wood’ on this batsman so when the batsman arrived at the crease, Warne was keen to drop a ‘one liner’ as he walked past the batsman. The story goes that Shane Warne said to the batsman, “what colour was the couch?” The reply to this comment was short, sharp and aggressive. To Warne’s delight, the batman only lasted 3 balls and was on his way back to the dressing room.

In a quote taken from an on-line article (Cricket.com.au) written by Fiona Goldfinch, dated 26th November,2017 on the topic of Sports Stress, the Australian Cricket Team Psychologist, Dr Michael Lloyd said, “He understands the use of on-field sledging, calling it an ‘effective performance tool’ but warned that social media had the potential to significantly contribute to stress for elite cricketers.”

“Sledging is something that goes on on-field and is very much about the performance aspect of the game,” said Dr Lloyd. “Quite often sledging is an effective tool to be able to challenge somebody regarding their performance and get the upper-hand on the field.

“What we are seeing playing out at the moment is a strong and aggressive rivalry on field, which is important, but it also seems like a high degree of respect for each other as professional athletes.” In an environment where our community has been more vigilant about protecting women and men both professionally and domestically from mental abuse and violence, it is probably timely to remind each other that ‘communication is an art’ and ‘knowledge is a privilege’ so we should teach our children to respect the art of communication and use the knowledge wisely.

Division 1 and 2 to benefit from more than $26,000 in council community Local community groups in Division 1 and 2 will share in more than $26,000 in the first round of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Community Grants Program for 2017/18.

Councillor for Division One, Brooke Savige, said the funding would assist the Rotary Club of Bribie Island Inc. and Conservation Volunteers Australia to undertake important environmental projects in the local community.

“Council’s Community Grant funding will allow the Rotary Club of Bribie Island Inc. to assist them with their project to plant trees at Rotary Park to support Rotary International’s initiative of planting 1.2 million trees around the world,” Cr Savige said.

“For Conservation Volunteers Australia, a funding grant of more than $4000 will enable this group to undertake weed control, revegetation, marine debris clean-up and dune stabilisation along the Woorim foreshore.

“These are fantastic environmental initiatives that will surely benefit our local community into the future and help draw more visitors to Bribie Island.”

Councillor for Division Two Peter Flannery said he was excited to announce $15,000 for the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia QLD Branch Inc, as part of council’s ongoing partnership with the Queensland Government through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), which would allow the association to present a commemorative concert marking the 50th Anniversary of the Battles of Balmoral and Coral at Vietnam.

“This grant will enable the association to put together a fun-filled concert comprised of music, dance, memorial presentations, international food stalls and drink stalls at the Burpengary headquarters,” Cr Flannery said.

The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Moreton Bay Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

The Queensland Government is contributing $2.08 million to the 201718 RADF partnership across 59 councils statewide.

Other Division 2 organisations to receive funding under this round of grants include: • Australian Care and Trauma Services Inc - $1569 - for a new dishwasher, portable projector and paper shredding machine

• Beachmere Area Network Group Association Inc - $2000 - for a new PA and sound system Cr Savige and Cr Flannery congratulated all successful applicants and encouraged other community groups and individuals interested in applying for the next round of the Community Grants Program to visit council’s website for more information.

“Applications for the second round of the 2017-18 program will open on 1 February 2018,” Cr Savige said.

“Council’s grants webpage lists all the

funding options available to community groups and individuals across the Moreton Bay Region, and provides information on what you need to include in your application,” Cr Flannery said.

The Community Grants Program is offered in two rounds each year, across a range of categories including facility development, community events and interest-free loans for facility improvements.

Veteran Matt Hanrahan from Beachmere RSL Sub Branch will be participating (1 of 20 Mates) to Brave the East Coast of Tasmania and Kayak.

The Brave the crossing Adventure Challenge will see Mates paddle 300+ kilometres across East Coast of Tasmania to assist in their journey to recovery and raise funds for Mates4Mates.

Qualified Sea Kayak Leaders will make sure our Mates are will prepared for this once in a life time adventure, taking in the Everest of the sea.

Adventure Challenges like ‘Brave the Crossing’ are designed to get Mates out of bed and out of their comfort zone, stretch them physically and mentally and give them a goal to strive for.

The Rehabilitation Adventure Challenges run throughout the year and give Mates and their families the opportunity to participate in a range of activities including trekking, cycling, sailing and kayaking programs.

In 2018 a group of 20 veterans will put their physical and mental strength to the test as they kayak up the east coast as Tasmania. The group includes a combination of current and ex-serving ADF members, from all three services.

One of the instructors, Tony, who completed a similar trip with Mates4Mates in 2015, said that this challenge gives people a new focus.

“It’s a hard trip that people won’t forget, and they’ll make lifetime friends,” he said.

I was honoured on the 2nd of December to be invited to the Amateur Fishermen’s Association of Queensland’s Xmas party at their club house. I must say what a great bunch of blokes they are. These full of fun men are extremely proud of their club house and the location is in one of the best on Bribie Island.

The club house is full of history, I was kindly shown around by Jimmy who is a very proud member and has been for many years. He took the time to show me where it all began in 1904, I was amazed at the old fishing rod’s they used back in the early 1900’s and the photo’s of old members like Thomas Welsby (Welsby Parade, Bongaree was named after Thomas) and who was also the President of the club from 1906 to 1922. There is so much history in this club house it will blow you away.

It was wonderful to see these gentlemen keeping it alive and going so strong. The club members apply for grants both State, Federal and Local governments to maintain the club house and keep it looking fantastic.

We had a fantastic lunch with Pork, Turkey, Ham and the best salads I have ever eaten, all prepared by the club member’s wives. I listen to some amazing stories from these guys from the past year, lots of laughs and incredible fishing stories.

If only I could fish, I would join this incredible club, it is no doubt in my mind the best in Queensland and their members come as far away as Yandina and Brisbane just to be a member here on Bribie Island.

BETWEEN November 20 and December 20 recreational and commercial fishermen/women cannot fish for spanner crabs. The month break marks Queensland`s annual closed season, to protect the crabs during breeding season.
