Q’ NOTES: A MESSAGE FROM THE DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR March 2021 marks the first anniversary of the national and international lockdown due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. As we all adjusted to the virtual world, innovation and imagination began to produce unique products and services. For Queen’s College and the Alumni Association, the months progressed to facilitate The Comet Connection’s relaunch in May 2020.

The newsletter is an essential step in connecting and developing communication between you, our current alumni, and future graduating alumni, creating the conduit between you, our legendary past and our students as the glorious future. Subscribers to the alumni newsletter will have online access to businesses at home and abroad. The Comet Connection will eventually expand to include editorials, video interviews and social media interactive postings. Each issue will also endeavour to include interactive graphics, multimedia and video shorts, along with archival articles that reach back over the 131 years of

excellence in education by Queen’s College. Future issues will include Arts & Leisure, automobiles, real estate, travel recommendations and, book and product reviews from fellow alumni.

Our newsletter will be one of the multiple avenues that we Comets will have to communicate, explore and educate our fellow alumni and friends.

Get to know Reverend Charles Sweeting: Alumnus, Principal, Parent and Legends Honouree.

This issue’s feature is former principal Reverend Charles Sweeting. Reverend Sweeting was appointed Principal of Queen’s College in 1979; he was the first old scholar and first Bahamian to be appointed Principal of the school. Rev Sweeting’s relationship with Queen’s College started long before his time as Principal. We had a conversation with Reverend Sweeting for this article. He spoke about his time as Principal, a position he held until 1993, and his time as a student, and courting his wife, and balancing parenthood with principalship.

Rev Sweeting attributes his success to individuals who mentored him, including Mr E. Bumbary and Rev R. P. Dyer. There were also organisations like the Methodist Ministry and the Rotary Clubs of Freeport, East Nassau and St Paul’s. They were each instrumental in his victories for his students and the institutions he stewarded. Each club supported his vision and worked to achieve those goals.

Rev Sweeting’s time with Rotary was indelible. Reverend Sweeting is currently facing medical challenges, thankfully his long friendships sparked advocates in the effort to contribute to his medical care. ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB

The Queen’s College Environmental Club has revitalised the QC Cans 4 Kids (initially started by Mrs Veronica Campbell, a past Primary Year’s teacher) under Faculty Advisor, Joshua Purcell (High School Geography teacher).

According to Shraavya Subodh, President of the QC Environmental Club, this initiative was important to revive because, “The production of aluminium cans releases a concerning amount of carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere having a detrimental effect on our planet. Additionally, these cans take about 250 years to decompose, which means they will take up significant space in our landfills. To develop a solution for this, the Environmental Club partnered with the Cans4Kids program to implement a recycling initiative on campus. We realised how important this is to conserve energy, reduce waste in landfills, and reduce pollution. Through this initiative, we hope to create a broader sense of environmental awareness among the school body.

Note: Cans 4 Kids is an example of Collaborative Engagement, Corporate Social Responsibility and Service-Learning at its finest. According to its website (2016), the non-profit has partnered with WasteNot Bahamas Ltd, Ronald Atkinson and Co, Caribbean Bottling Co. Bahamas Ltd. (CBC Bahamas), Bahamas Hot Mix and schools across the Bahamas to reduce the amount of solid waste that ends up at landfills, enlighten the public on the long-term benefits of recycling, and raise funds for children in The Bahamas.

Queen’s College is one of many schools to join the initiative and has sought to be an example for more institutions to follow.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING One Hundred Thousand Bahamas Tree Planting Initiative

Dr Ancilleno Davis founder of Science and Perspective instructs budding and veteran gardening enthusiasts on sustainable gardening practices. Dr Davis became known to us on his visit to the campus as the Project Consultant with the Bahamas Branch of the Caribbean Philanthropic Alliance (CPA) Tree Planting Project (an initiative under the Clinton Foundation).

The CPA 1 Million Tree Planting Project Leader for the Caribbean is 2016 graduate Mr Chaz Garraway (King House); The

Bahamas will contribute 100 Thousand trees to this tree planting initiative under National Project Leader Melissa Ingram, Class of 2015 (Rogers House) and assistant national Project Leader, Tiana Amann Class of 2016 (King House).

SPRING IN DESIGN

In the Bahamas, we are fortunate that Spring is not a style but a timeless cultural experience. When we observe the colonial buildings in Downtown Nassau and other historic buildings and spaces, we see examples of the warm spring colours’ timeless beauty. Fun fact: the masons originally created the colonial pink we see used today on buildings such as The Government House, by crushing the redbrick and mixing it with the white mortar. The idea may have come from the natural pink sands of our Bahamian beaches. According to Insider Travel, it “gets its hue from thousands of broken coral pieces, shells, and calcium carbonate materials left behind by foraminifera (tiny marine creatures with red and pink shells)

that live in the coral reefs...”

For the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) designers, this Spring’s color pallet is warm and inspires feelings of awakening and new beginnings.

Farmers and gardeners plant their seeds at this time as temperatures rise and the earth itself comes back to life. My Spring In Design experience crossed my personal and professional life after my family home was severely damaged by Hurricane Dorian.

In the aftermath of the storm, my family were temporarily displaced as our home was unliveable. Being left with a massive ‘spring cleaning’ exercise after the storm was heartbreaking, but we are fortunate; we lost replaceable things, but our lives were spared.

XAVIER DEI FISHER, Class of ‘17 Xavier Dei Fisher, recently graduated from St. Mary’s University in Halifax, NS, Canada, in a virtual convocation held on Saturday, February 13, 2021.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in Criminology with a minor in Psychology. Xavier is currently studying to sit the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) with which she will continue on to law school in the Fall of 2021.

APRIL FOOLS DAY

According to the A&E network’s History Channel (2020), some historians speculate that April Fools Day dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and that it was Pope Gregory XIII who introduced the Gregorian calendar to change the date of Easter. The previous Roman system miscalculated the length of the solar year causing the calendar to fall out of sync with the seasons. This meant that Easter, traditionally observed on March 21, would...[fall] further away from the spring equinox with each passing year.

People who were slow to change the New Year to January 1 and continued to celebrate it during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called ‘April fools’.

April Fools Day—celebrated on April 1 each year—has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures. April Fools Day traditions include playing hoaxes or practical jokes on others, often yelling “April Fools!” at the end to clue in the subject that the event was an April Fools Day prank.

by Reverend Angela Palacious The church uses visible symbols to assist with an understanding and appreciation of the Church’s year: BLACK (sorrow): Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent when black crosses are placed on the forehead. [The ash is typically made from burnt palm branches of the previous year’s Palm Sunday.]

PURPLE (penitence): During Lent indicates our need of repentance (Pink—4th Sunday for refreshment).

RED (suffering): Used on Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday reminding us of Christ’s blood to be shed on the cross.

WHITE/GOLD (joy): Easter is celebrated as the “Queen of Feasts”.

PASTEL COLOURS: Dresses, hats and shirts signify springtime, rebirth and new beginnings.

She earned a Master of Laws (LLM with Distinction) in International and Commercial Law with a specialisation in Financial Services. Danielle is in her final year at Eugene Dupuch Law School. We congratulate her and wish her continued success in all her future endavours.

CLASS OF 1972 DONATION: IN MEMORIAM OF OLIVIA MCCLEAN Event organiser, Virginia Kelly, and other members of the Class of 1972 presented two wheelchairs purchased from the Bahamas Medical & Surgical Supplies Limited and engraved by The Trophy Case A Division of Nassau Plastics to Rev Henry A Knowles, Principal of Queen’s College. The wheelchairs were donated to the school in memory of 72’s late classmate Olivia McLean. Also present were Olivia’s widower Leroy (wearing the hat), and her brother, Harris Gibson (who also took photos; in the red shirt). The entire class donned masks embroidered with QC Class 1972, produced by fellow classmate Maria Juanita Poiter, proprietor of Juanitas Monogramm and Variety Store. Also on hand to immortalise the event were photographer Rosemary Clarice Hanna and ZNS News.

STAND UP BOOK LAUNCH

David has been living with multiple sclerosis for over 20 years and has dedicated his life to motivating, inspiring, and empowering others to embrace life challenges. His key message is to never give up, no matter what odds you are faced with.

Dr. Dedrick Bowe, Pulmonary Critical Care Specialist says, “His account of his personal struggles, survival and conquering life with the disease as outlined in this book, will run the entire gamut of all emotions as seen through his eyes and give the readers hope, courage, strength, and faith to know that whatever your struggle is in this life, you too can truly live and love your life!”

His book has captivating chapters like, “It was a Good Fall”, “You Have to Fight for It”, “Why, Why, Why?” and “Words to Live By.” David’s life has been grounded with scriptures such as, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13 and “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” Psalm 46:1.

QC 5000 QC 5000 is a non-profit organization whose aim is to give back to the homeless in New Providence. The poor and homeless in our community deserve our attention and care. QC 5000 was founded in 2010 by former Head Boy Carlyle Bethel of the Graduating Class 2011. It is named based on the Parable of ‘The Feeding of the 5000” in all four gospels of the Bible.

His vision was to touch the lives of the homeless men and women seen in Potter’s Cay Dock area, at the foot of the old Paradise Island Bridge. QC 5000 provides a hot breakfast to homeless persons in the area. Each month, approximately 125 persons are fed. The food is donated and prepared by our students.

This club provides breakfast of either corned beef or tuna and grits, near Potter’s Cay Dock. The students have taken on the challenge under current Student President Om Dhadwal and Faculty Advisor Mrs. Kanchan Dhadwal (Science/Chemistry Teacher) with a measure of concern that is truly admirable. They are internalizing the lesson of love and leadership taught in school. These qualities are reflected in the way they serve this

disadvantaged group. Once you are a part of QC 5000 and give back, it is a portion of your heart that is going out to those who need it but are overlooked by today’s society.

The date for the next QC 5000 Feeding will be April 24th, 2021, at Retirement Park. Alumni who wish to donate canned goods of tuna and corned beef may contact the QC Cares Representative, Development Coordinator, D’Ondré Miller (242-829-5164/dmiller@qchenceforth.com), located in the Centre for Further Education Building.

SYMBOLS OF EASTER ASHES on Ash Wednesday: Ashes were used in the Old Testament to symbolize humility, death, and repentance. On Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, ministers and priests sign the faithful with ashes on their foreheads, with the traditional words, “Remember that you are dust and unto dust, you will return.” This is a reminder of God’s creation of the first man Adam from the dust of the earth to which our bodies will return in death.

Lent is a time to remind ourselves that our lives do not go on forever.

They had a beginning and will have an end—maybe even today. Are we prepared to meet our maker?

LORD, You created us. You have kept us and You will take us to Yourself if we trust in and follow You. Help us to remember that everything in this world is ashes. Only love lasts forever. Amen.

PALM BRANCHES on Palm Sunday: Just days before His Passion and Death, Jesus, seated on a donkey, entered Jerusalem. By this action, He was publically claiming the title of Messiah. The Jewish people recognized His entry as the fulfilment of a prophecy about their king, coming to them seated upon the foal of a donkey. Jesus was a well-known, popular, controversial figure.

The people, sure that the Messiah had come to free them from Roman domination, hailed Him as king. Palm branches, at the time of Christ, were symbols of goodness, well-being, and victory.

As a concrete reminder of that day, the modern faithful cut down palm fronds and bring them to church on Palm Sunday, the start of Holy Week in the Christian calendar. Liturgical churches bless them before distributing them. Others fold the palms into the shape of a cross. The discarded palms are later collected and burned; the ashes are used for the

next year’s Ash Wednesday.

LORD, we look to victory over sin, not over political powers. We know that You are our King. We lay our lives before You in Your service. We believe that You have the victory. Amen.

HOLY THURSDAY On Holy Thursday night, also known as Maundy Thursday, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples to show them that they must humble themselves and serve others. He wanted to leave them His example as well as the Lord’s Supper before going to His Passion and death. Foot washing was the job of slaves and servants, not of lords and masters. Jesus demonstrated that those who serve are truly the greatest as they imitate God Who serves us, His creatures.

LORD, grant us the humility to serve others even if, in worldly terms, they are socially or politically or morally “below” us. We are the least of Your servants, Lord. Grant us the humility to see ourselves as we truly are and to live in humble service to others. Amen.

THE CROSS: The cross is a symbol of Lent and Easter for obvious reasons. It is the torture device upon which Christ, our Savior and Lord, died in reparation for our sins. It reminds us of Jesus’s ultimate sacrifice. The cross is among the most powerful and important religious symbols of Easter. While religious crosses can be made of different materials, a plain wooden cross is the version most symbolic of Easter. That’s because this type of cross most accurately depicts the cross upon which Jesus was crucified and where he died, before being placed in a tomb and being resurrected three days later.

LORD, how much You love us! We can never understand the depth of Your

SYMBOLS OF EASTER (CONT.. ) love. We can only accept it and try, in our feeble ways, to return it to You in our service to You and to others. Give us the grace, Lord, to give a good return. Amen.

CROWN OF THORNS: After His terrible scourging, Jesus was crowned with thorns, dressed in a purple cloak, and mocked by his tormentors as a wanna-be king of the Jews. These soldiers were so immune to human suffering that they went so far as to take a reed, give it to Jesus as a sceptre, and then take it from Him to strike him repeatedly over His head, banging down on the crown of thorns. We can hardly imagine the humiliation, the scorn, and the pain which Jesus suffered by being crowned with thorns.

The fact that the tomb is empty symbolizes the mystery of the resurrection.

It demonstrates the role of God in performing a deed that no man could make happen. It points to the hope and promise of new life and rebirth for those who walk with the Lord.

LORD, increase our faith in the resurrection, your resurrection, our own, and the resurrection of others. Lord, let us live with the hope of the resurrection always before us. Amen

LORD, You suffered pain and humiliation for us. You suffered the scorn of Your tormentors. Today many scorn You while they try to humiliate Your followers. Give us grace to love all those who persecute Christians or others. We pray for their conversion so that they may follow the path of goodness and humility which You lived and showed to us. Amen.

EMPTY TOMB: The empty tomb is an obvious symbol of Easter because it indicates Christ’s resurrection from the dead. It also indicates our resurrection.

BAHAMIAN EXCHANGE The 5th annual Bahamian Exchange was held virtually for the first time on March 12, 2021.

This exciting event is inspired by an international movement called, “Human Library” that showcases people from different backgrounds and experiences to share life from their perspective.

There were six (6) impactful Bahamians living in The Bahamas and abroad representing our theme, “Unlock New Possibilities.”

BAHAMIAN EXCHANGE (CONT.. )

PTA NEWS The Parent-Teacher Association is calling for parent nominees who wish to serve on the Board of the PTA. As a member of the Board, you will have an opportunity to shape the future of Queen’s College and support the needs of the students, their parents and the wider school community.

You will have a voice in changes that affect the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of the QC population. Interested parties must be in good standing with the association, a parent or guardian, be prepared to serve for a minimum of one year. The term will begin on June 1, 2021.

4:00 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2021. The executive team will comprise the following positions, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, Secretary and Assistant Secretary. SPRING IN DESIGN (CONT.. ) Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, we would rebuild. I started investigating the Tiny-House or Small-House movement; one, in particular, caught my attention. The tiny-house movement (also known as the “small-house movement”) is an architectural and social movement that advocates living simply in a tiny home, with a ‘less is more’ philosophy. There are a variety of reasons for living in a small house. Many people who enter this lifestyle rethink what they value in life and decide to put more effort into strengthening their communities, healing the environment, spending time with their families, and saving money; I can certainly agree with the sentiment. The Tiny Homes came with many challenges, such as budget restrictions and reduced space. Still, I have come to love the Regatta Tiny Home project professionally and personally because it has allowed me to design and create a home for my family.

ALUMNI IN ACTION (CONT.. ) The members of the Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN), under Literacy Chair Valentino Bethell (Class of 1995, King House), donated 119 dictionaries (which were inscribed by RCEN sponsored interact clubs Queen’s College and St Anne’s) to Sandilands Primary School in the presence of Minister of Education the Honourable Jeffrey Lloyd. Also donated were 100 narrative books by the Brighter Bahamas Foundation (BBF) through RCEN Sattelite Club Rotary After Dark (RAD). Other instrumental QC alumni to the literacy project are S. Dianne ThompsonMiller (Class 1972, Dyer House, RCEN Secretary), D’Ondre Miller (Class 1997, King House, BBF Program Director) and Jehan Unwala (Class 1997, King House, BBF Co-Founder).

CONDOLENCES It is with great sadness that I report the sudden passing of Mr Colin Knight, a former teacher at QC Primary School Teacher from 1972-1977. As a Grade 6 teacher, many will recall his kind and gentle manner, love of sports and devotion to all students in his care. Colin remembered his years in The Bahamas wth great fondness. Both of his children, Adrian and Claire, were born here during that time.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family.
