Q’ NOTES: A MESSAGE FROM THE QCAA PUBLIC RELATIONS DIRECTOR how gruelling that field could be.

However, while at university, I sat on various student committees where I had to plan events. While it was hard work, I found it was fun and fulfilling work. ( A rare combination.)

After graduation, a position opened up at the university and voila!

Hi, my name is Devonnia Miller (Class of 2001). I currently work as a Senior Academic & Events Coordinator at Victoria University in the University of Toronto (that’s a mouth full!). What that means is that I book the academic courses and events that are held on campus. I never really saw myself working in the event management field. I was adamant that I would not work in the event planning field. My mum (Class of 1972) had worked on various committees (Bahamas Olympic Association, New Providence Softball Association, PowerTalk, etc.). I saw 2

In March of 2020, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, like many other Comets, I now had time to focus not just on work but also on achieving a proper work-life balance.

I had time to think about my passions again.

This time allowed me to utilise the skills that I developed over the years to create my own event/ project management company called Island House Productions. Through my work with Island House Productions, I have helped other small businesses and non-profits establish their online presence through social media marketing, website development and event management. Working with business clients has enabled me to continue with outside of the box thinking regarding projects that I work on for the university.

COVID has allowed all of us to rethink, pivot and reshape our environments. With everything that I do, when I was asked to sit on the Queen’s College Alumni Association Executive Board, I answered the call. It has been a great opportunity even though I live and work in Canada. With the advent of tools

like Zoom and MS Teams, I have been able to sit on the board and assist with its Public Relations.

Virtual communication has also helped me increase my contact with my family, which is especially important after experiencing the loss of my father to cancer (in January of 2020). While October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, I couldn’t help but think of the loss of those I held near and dear who have died from cancer. Cancer screenings are essential; make sure to connect with your doctors for your annual visits and know the benchmark ages for screenings that the medical community recommends.

Reminiscing on the time I spent with my father before he died, I have to talk about my spirituality and how my relationship with God helped me through that painful time. I take comfort in the fact that my father was a man of faith who took comfort in Psalm 73:26: “ My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” This coming All Saints Eve, I will spend remembering my father and the many souls that have passed away from cancer, COVID or any debilitating disease.

I will also spend All Saints Eve celebrating family members I have lost over the years and cherish those who remain. I hope the same opportunity for everyone else.

QUEEN’S COLLEGE ALUMNI FEATURE: DR JASON CAREY Dr Jason Carey

Class of 2001 (Dyer House)

Born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, and a graduate of Queen’s College, Dr. Jason Carey is a cancer biology scientist in the molecular diagnostic oncology field with over 15 years of experience developing biomarkers for clinical research and oncology clinical trial investigation. Dr Carey earned his BS & PhD from Clark Atlanta University’s Cancer Center for Therapeutic Development.

Over his professional career, he has served in various roles across the oncology diagnostic field at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Caris Life Sciences, and Grail Inc. His research has earned several awards, including the Susan G. Komen Postdoctoral Fellowship and Organization of American States Scholarship for Graduate Studies.

Dr Carey has authored/co-authored 15 publications in leading scientific journals and presented at numerous international conferences.

Dr Carey enjoys spending time with his wife, Phiona, and son, Jason. He is an advocate for mentoring the next generation of STEM professionals.

What year did you graduate from Queen’s College? 2001 In which Sports House where you place (Dyer Health King Rogers)? Dyer, obviously!

What is your first memory of being on the QC Campus? 1987 ELC What were your interests while you were a student at Queen’s College? I played just about every sport in high school at some point. Soccer, Volleyball, Softball, Track & Field. I was also involved in GGYA & Art

What are your interests today? My primary interest is spending time with family and enjoying the opportunity to be a parent and husband.

How and why did you decide on your career path? High School Biology and Chemistry were always my favourite subjects. I thought those would be prerequisites for medical school; however, they led me down a different path to obtain my PhD in Cancer Research instead. Now I work for a company that is on the cutting edge of detecting cancer from a blood test at the earliest stages when it can be.

What would you say are the main areas in which QC has informed who you are today? What areas did it not? I spent 14 years at Queen’s College. It is the only school I have ever known while living in the Bahamas. To say I am a die-hard comet is an understatement. It is often not until you leave QC that you really start to appreciate what it meant to you and your life. Above all else, I cherish the people I met most along the way and the teachers who helped to influence and guide me.

What is your philosophy to maintain a healthy work-life balance? My philosophy presently is “NEVER AGAIN”.

In choosing a scientific profession, there were times in my life that I dedicated significant time and energy to further my education and career. That was acceptable at the time, but now as a young parent and dedicated husband, my priority is to make family first a guiding principle in any endeavour.

HALLOWEEN: A HISTORY

In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of activities like trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes, and eating treats.

So whether you trick or treat, know that Holloween All Hallows Eve is a liturgical vigil in its own right and thus has a reason for being.

In fact, how you spent the All Hallows Eve or the vigil of All Saints depended on where you lived in Christendom. In eighth-century Brittany, the night (and forty-eight hours after) was without a trace of merriment; they believed that the souls of their loved ones were liberated from Purgatory and were free to come to visit their old homes, so the evening was solemn.

In Ireland and Scotland, and England, All Hallows’ Eve became a combination of solum prayer and merriment. After the Reformation, the merriment evolved into Halloween pranks plaguing Catholics who kept the All Saints vigil.

While many of the hiccups of virtual learning have smoothed out over the past year and a half, and we know so much more than we did, every day is still a struggle with new challenges. My family frequently experiences frustration, depression, anxiety, and grief. Unlike last year, there seems to be a new expectation this semester that the goal is no longer to just survive but also to thrive...which seems unattainable and adds more stress to the task of survival.

As college deadlines and national graduation requirements loom, priorities that had been put on hold are now being pushed forward full steam without a lot of the traditional support and tools.

QUEEN’S COLLEGE: WORLD TEACHER DAY Penelope Nottage

Mary Lowe

On the occasion of World Teacher Day, we would like to highlight some of our teachers who have passed on.

Mrs Mary Lowe came to Queens College from Ainsdale, Southport, England, in 1959 to take up a teaching post. She taught for 36 years at QC in grades 1 and 2 and became the head of the ELC. A multitude of students who came under her care fondly remember her. She died in 2018.

Mr Colin Knight passed in March of this year.

He was a well-loved teacher of grade 6 and also the classroom teacher of this writer. He had a singular teaching style that left an indelible mark on many students at QC from 1972-77.

Mr Rob Nichols passed in September. He taught math in the 70s, 80s and 90s and served as the Head of Department for Mathematics in the High School. Students remember him for his role as Elvis Presley in one of the school plays. We will remember him as a gentleman with an air of calm about him.

Mrs Sue Coleby passed away on September 19th, 2021. She had thousands of swimmers and students pass through her tutelage- her impact is immeasurable and extends beyond the borders of the commonwealth of The Bahamas Barracuda Swim Club Bahamas.

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on 5 October every year in the whole world to commemorate the anniversary of the adoption of the ILO/ UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers in 1966. No doubt this Recommendation sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers, education, recruitment, employment, etc.

We also highlight our current teachers.

It is said that Florence Berger, author of Cooking for Christ, a legend of a Zealous Cook, in her vow to reinvent the soul cake cut a hole in the middle of her dough and dropped it in hot fat.

Therefore, the doughnut hole circle reminds us with every bite the never-ending eternity. Truth or legend, it serves a good purpose at Halloween.

The vigil for the souls of the dead and the saints had to be kept on this night because, the two days were consecutive feasts, and a watch-night is never held on a feast day.

VIRTUAL LEARNING (CONT.. ) filled with images of teens in other parts of the world apparently proceeding with life as usual, freely socializing, attending dances, and celebrating life’s milestones.

That all said, my family is conscious of silver linings - Class time in more comfortable, cooler environments, with easy access to private restrooms. Better diet options with access to home kitchens. Being able to use technology to stay more organized and produce classwork assignments. The time previously spent on transport is spent on schoolwork, allowing for time and energy for exercise. Personally, I greatly appreciate virtual parent-teacher meetings rather than trekking to the QC campus at the end of a long workday.

We have learnt to find joy in different ways. Instead of travelling and eating out, Fridays are international food nights in our house.

Complete with decor, costumes, and discussions about the history and culture of a different country, we have explored over 60 countries. Instead of going to the movies, we have created a list of classic movies that broaden our horizons and enhance our family conversation. We have even learnt to enjoy the world of

foreign language film and TV in a way we never did more. Long live K-dramas!

Figuring out life after high school college is still extremely intimidating and challenging. However, the seniors in our extended family have decided to take a year between high school and college, to get work experience and explore different career options that haven’t been possible to do in the past couple of years, which may prove to be the best path.

I am grateful. Grateful for life and quality time with my family.

Thankful to all those working to keep us safe and working to help my children progress. I am grateful for the QC community, which through my involvement in the PTA, I am meeting daily more individuals who want the best for our kids. I appreciate being a part of a community with so many resources. This year, my hope is to work with QC stakeholders to make those resources more accessible for the benefit of all our students. Through tears and prayers...may we all help each other survive and one day thrive.

Dean is who I think of first, even though my Spanish is less than average even after studying it for 6 years in high school. However, it was really the experience of project Europe that Senor Dean led that helped me to appreciate the world.

What is the most memorable day in your life on the QC Campus (give one or one in each space you inhabit - past student/past or current teacher/past or current parent)?The most memorable day that comes to mind was graduation in the QC auditorium. Not because we were actually graduating but because that marked the end of a very long journey with some of my closest friends. The equivalent of finishing the best book of your life.

Presently Dr Carey serves as a Medical Science Liaison for a USA-based molecular diagnostic company GRAIL Inc. that has developed the first blood test to detect over 50 different types of cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality globally.

With hundreds of various cancers diagnosed each year, we can only screen for 5 cancers (e.g. breast, colon, cervical, lung, and prostate). This severely limits the ability to detect cancers at their earliest stages when they can be cured, thus leaving many people 15

CONDOLENCES Our brother Ivan N. Johnson was Editor, Publisher and owner of The Punch, the local tabloid, for almost thirty-one years. He revolutionized journalism in The Bahamas after training with the best on Fleet Street and launching Murdock papers in Australia. He also enjoyed a successful career as a professional cricketer in England for Worcestershire in the 1970s.

Ivan had the common touch, and the immediate outpouring of sympathies on his death from people of every walk of life in our community is a testimony to his jovial, friendly and kind spirit and his fearlessness in reporting the story.

His unexpected passing on Monday evening will leave a vast void in the field of journalism in our Bahamas. We mourn his passing and give thanks for his rich legacy.
