This school year has been like none other for the students, and staff of Queen’s College as they experienced a full year of virtual classes. The year was marked with the challenges of being physically separated from classmates and the woes of relying on functional computers, consistent electricity and internet service at home. Despite it all, like true Comets, our students rose above the obstacles and achieved

future. Travel well.

As our seniors prepare to transition from students to alumni, they must determine what they will do with all that they have experienced during their final years of high school. Very few persons have succeeded in life without difficulties, disappointments and discouragements. Yet, rather than giving up or giving in, they tightened their bootstraps, identified support systems and harnessed their inner strengths to keep pressing forward. In the Bible, God told Joshua that everywhere he walked, he would possess; as long as he remained focused on the goal of the mission.

The journey will not be easy, but it will be worth it.

In what year did you graduate from Queen’s College?

1985 officially, then part of the first 12th grade College Prep year and finished as Head Girl in 1986.

In which Sports House where you placed?

The best house - Rogers, of course! :) What were your interests while you were a student at Queen’s College?

I absolutely loved being part of everything at Queen’s College! I was part of several school musical productions (as part of the choir). I starred in “Villa On Venus”, a mini-production. I was also a faithful member of the Student Christian Movement (SRC), and I assisted with modelling at the annual Youth Expo on Paradise Island!

Chaos is a natural order of life; things are always falling apart and nothing is designed to exist forever. No one is immune. The COVID-19 pandemic surrounds the graduation year of the Queen’s College Class of 2021. Against the backdrop of all the uncertainties of the future, we remain resolved that, like those who have journeyed the hallways of Queen’s College and exited the campus for the final time, the QC Class of 2021 will soar to new heights, like only a Comet can, and blaze into a prosperous

What are your interests today?

One of my biggest passions is my family.

I love hanging out with them. Another passion is the Children’s Ministry at my home church, Holy Trinity Anglican Church. I’ve been part of the children’s

ministry for years- including Sunday School, volunteering at Vacation Bible School and assisting with our annual Children’s Prayer Conference “Hands Together In Prayer”. I also love reading, writing stories and painting in my spare time.

I would describe myself as a budding photographer and movie-maker. At the start of the pandemic last year, I was instrumental in launching a virtual Sunday School for my parish and assisted at the Diocesan level.

What made you decide to become a QC parent, that is, to enrol your children at Queen’s College?

Becoming a Queen’s College parent was a no-brainer for me! I believe in the philosophy and mission of Queen’s College - which is the total development of the child spiritually, physically, socially and academically. Queen’s College students are thinkers, innovators and leaders. My experience here was so amazing that I knew that I wanted my children to enjoy the same. We enrolled

MOTHER’S DAY: A HISTORY

STUDENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The first model of Mother’s Day is from the early Christian church and a festival known as “Mothering Sunday.” The celebration falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent and was initially seen as a time when the faithful would return to their “mother church” for a special service.

Over the years, the tradition has expanded to the secular community as a holiday where children gift their mother’s flowers and tokens of appreciation.

The day has had many ups and downs throughout the world.

From its pronouncement as an over-commercialised holiday in the United States to a somewhat obscure existence in the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day has significant weight. During the 1960’s Coretta Scott King (wife of Martin Luther King Jr) marched on Washington in support of underprivileged women and children (on this day). In Thailand, the day celebrates its queen. In Ethiopia, families gather to sing songs and eat with general merriment that honours all mothers.

One thing is certain, no matter the tradition or where one is in the world, according to the History Channel (The History of Mother’s Day, 2021), more phone calls are made on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year.

As Queen’s College students gear up to take the 2021 national examinations, we look back and solute students’ performance over the past ten years.

Queen’s College expressed its pride via several Facebook posts of their achievements, praising both students and teachers for their hard work and focus. The graphics reflect BJC and BGCSE examinations for 2020 and the past 10 years of excellence, demonstrating the very best in The Bahamas!

our eldest here long before I became employed here. Joshua, Hannah, and Matthew all began their school careers at the Early Learning Centre (now the Foundation Years) have now all graduated. My husband and I marvel at the fact that we were parents of QC for 27 beautiful years!

When did you start working at Queen’s College, and what made you decide to apply and share your talents at QC? I always wanted to become employed at my alma mater. I have such wonderful memories of my own learning journey here. I wanted to be part of that and give others what I gained whilst a student here. After years at another institution, I applied to Queen’s College in 1997 and have been here for the past 24 years!

What was the deciding factor in accepting your position as curriculum coordinator for FY? Curriculum has always been a particular interest of mine. I am always reading, reflecting on my practice and keeping abreast of instructional trends. I also love sharing my learning. At the time, I was offered the Coordinator post, I had been teaching for more than 15 years. By then, I was ready to make the leap out of the classroom to working alongside teachers and students to promote growth and learning from a broader perspective.

The Coordinator post has afforded me the best of both worlds as I continue to work very closely with our students in the classrooms.

COLLEGE 101 This year marks nineteen years since I graduated high school, and that Fall, I began my college journey, one that did not come without trial and error. Those who know me well know that I am a planner and an overthinker. So, I felt very prepared to start college as I thought of every possible situation that could occur, good or bad. However, I did not expect to get overwhelmed. Even after successfully completing my first college semester with a 3.5-grade point average, I was awash with tears and seriously contemplating whether to return in the Spring.

Get Organized

College life is more than being academically adept and seeking to achieve good grades. It is about balancing life by prioritizing, practising practical time management skills, and learning to take care of yourself (especially if you are moving away from home). Here are a few tips to help you thrive in college:

Set aside time to relax and focus on self-care.

Keeping track of assignments and due dates is essential, and avoid procrastination.

What is the most memorable day in your life on the QC Campus ?

Memorable QC days: • Roasting marshmallows and being introduced to S’mores on week-long field trips with Grade 4 (Camp Abaco and later to Camp Symonette in Eleuthera) • Hosting exciting exhibition days with Grade One teachers, such as the Toy Project Exhibit - and having grandparents come as guests to share the types of toys they played with as children.

Get involved in campus life This has many pluses, such as building your self-identity, making new friends, exploring other cultures, networking and coping with homesickness.

What would you say are the main areas in which QC has informed who you are today?

As an alumna (and in latter years, a parent and employee), I believe that Queen’s College definitely helped to inform who I am today. From the time I was 5 years old, until graduation, Queen’s College was a place where I met Jesus, formed lasting friendships, travelled the world through the experiences of my many international teachers and classmates, engaged in rigorous academia, and in expressed myself in creative activities such as art projects, drama, music and more.

At Queen’s College I explored the world in wonderful, studentfriendly, holistic ways! I became a leader.

What is your philosophy to maintain a healthy work-life balance?

Hmmm......“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6. It’s my Sunday School verse, but it really is key. If we are entrusting ourselves to Him, balance is there.

Practising Habit 3: “Put First Things First” helps. If we acknowledge the Lord and put Him first in everything we do, we can’t help but maintain balance by placing the ‘big rocks’ at the forefront.

RETIREMENT FEATURE: MRS MINNIS In what year did your employment begin at Queen’s College?

I joined Queen’s College as Miss Virginia Thompson, a first-grade teacher, in September of 1978.

What made you decide to apply and share your talents at QC? I was approached by then principal Rev Hayden Middleton while attending Synod in Freeport Grand Bahama, where I presented a report.

I joined relatively late in the year and was interviewed by Mrs Yvonne Noronha – Ms Wisdom, and Mr and Mrs Roberts joined later in the year. As one of few persons of colour employed at the school, I was very aware of the importance of producing results.

Were you assigned a Sports House?

YES! DYER on fire! I always practised with my children and when I did, DYER always won! [To Heath, King and Rogers, this claim was not fact-checked!]

What were your interests while engaged at Queen’s College?

Apart from my primary focus on the children in the classroom, I sought to develop readers at a very young age. I launched a culminating activity called ‘Reading & Family Fun Day’– this event featured an open-house format where students displayed their work with parents. Parents were invited. I can recall a particular year when one of the students’ invited Dame Ivy Dumont - and she came!

There was also a sports component with eats and treats afterward in the classrooms.

My intention was to build students’ character through moral and spiritual development, especially having established the ‘Kids for Christ’ Club within the upper and lower Primary School. I ultimately expanded the club to twice a week to accommodate the demand from the students.

Drama Club was another interest as it tapped into the children’s gifts and talents. I also mentored the Girl Guides.

I hardly had a lunchtime free!

What is your educational philosophy?

I have a passion for children and sincerely want to ‘train up children in the way they should go’ - in the Biblical fashion- and hopefully, develop the whole child. I include in this development the building and training of teachers to learn and thrive in a culture of excellence.

Building relationships is paramount to achieve! I do my best to make teachers feel a part of the learning culture through good relationships.

Within Foundation Years (FY), we developed a hands-on approach to learning, integrated with a thematic curriculum within a childfriendly environment with resources to enable our little Comets to shine!

Education was also fun for the teachers, with ‘lesson fairs’ and opportunities for teachers to share and grow!

Tell us a little about your leadership journey. What was the deciding factor in accepting your position as Headmistress and later, Vice Principal for Foundation Years (formally the Early Learning Centre (ELC)?

I firmly believe that it is the favour of God that has opened doors of leadership for me. First, with being Head of Grade One, and later as Headmistress of the Early Learning Centre (1999) and Vice Principal in 2014.

Doors continue to open for me as I work towards excellence, transforming my environment through setting high standards and bringing about change when necessary. I know that parents and administrators saw my expertise and capabilities and have come to recognise me for my high standards. I reflect and expect excellence of myself and my team.

What is the most memorable day in your life on the QC Campus?

Our outdoor performances (especially at the old Early Learning Centre - ELC). The new ELC building opened; we were constantly being flooded at the old ELC, so the deck was created. The transformation of our learning environment was a truly memorable moment.

The addition of cutting edge resources especially the interactive whiteboards, donated by one of my little comets who was all grown up.

Being promoted to Vice Principal and receiving such support and affirmation.

The installation of our new playground equipment.

What do you consider your lasting legacy at QC? • The further development of a positive, happy climate and a community of highly qualified and motivated teachers and learners.

• Cultivating a well-resourced learning environment where teachers would find and use their voice which often manifested in our weekly collaboration meetings.

• Achieving the goal of a clean, healthy and safe learning environment for students and teachers. I was often the last to leave, wanting to stay vigilant, checking the building to ensure they were safe from burglars.

• The Kemp Road Peace Outreach: As our neighbours, it was essential to build a relationship with the community showing #WeAreForeverComets

the predominantly hard-working residents that Queen’s College acknowledged and supported them. And to those struggling to find the right path, I hoped the relationship would help them see QC as a neighbour and not a source for vandalism.

I believe I will be remembered as a motivator, a peoplecentred leader who tapped into the skills and talents of my team. I also think my teachers enjoyed my daily visits (which doubled as my power-walk exercise time) and support, including errands I might run on their behalf. Results have always been important to me, so I was never shy in rolling up my sleeves to get things done.

And most important, the spiritual development of staff and students.

As you reflect on your work, what are you most proud of?

I am proud of being able to share in the education of my past students (first graders) and seeing them coming back and partnering with us in the education of their own children. To see my students now adults and helping with specific initiatives at school has been heartwarming and a point of pride for me.

A perfect example of these full-circle experience is embodied in my former student Amanda Wells. She would often venture into the ELC during her High School years to assist, and now a teacher leader.

I am so proud of my work as a cheerleader to my students - I know the name of ‘Every Little Comet!’ because of the time I spent in the classrooms - affirming and validating them and their work! The children always loved showing me their work!

What is your philosophy for maintaining a healthy work-life balance?

To love, to learn, to lend and to lead, always seeking God first. I am a servant-leader to my family, fitness, faith and fun; faith always being at the centre.

What are your interests outside of QC? I continue to do the work of the Lord.

Launching out to the deep and following Christ’s great commission, I lead the Evangelism Explosion Ministry and train and support others in the ministry. I am the Prayer Captain in the Prayer Ministry of Holy Trinity Anglican Church. I am also very involved at the Diocesan level, specifically with the Cursillista in

GRADUATION NEWS Queen’s College will hold its second ever virtual graduation ceremony since the onset of COVID-19 Pandemic. The ceremony honours the class of 2021 and will take place on Saturday, June 19, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Details will follow via the school’s social media platforms.

the Anglican Cursillo Movement. I have recently taken on the role of mini technology advisor in setting up Zoom meetings and leading Bible studies via the platform.

I am very grateful for the blessings that the Lord has bestowed upon me. I hope to continually hear my Lord say, well done, my good and faithful servant.

What would you say are the main areas in which QC has informed who you are today?

Queen’s College’s legacy of excellence is top of the list. QC has most certainly cultivated my leadership skills to the point of being an embedded part of my character.

Understanding that leadership often means allowing other to take the lead I have tried to creat opportunities for my teachers and little comes to shine; they have gone above and beyond my expectation.

Thank you to the generations of Queen’s College families I have taught over the years. The love I feel for you, my little comets, has often been returned by you and your parents, who have embraced many of the essential lifelong lessons that we have learned before and since implementing the LeaderInMe curriculum, and has often been expressed in answering the call to assist that I have often placed over the years. I, we (Comet Nation), can not thank you enough.

What is next for Mrs Virgina Minnis?

My lifelong dream has been to learn to play the piano. I want to continue working with children and adults, and I am looking forward to increasing my percentage of self-care with a more focused fitness routine and lots of love for and to my family.

A QUEEN’S COLLEGE HISTORY FEATURE

A histroy of the late HRH Prince Philip and the late Sir Durward Knowles.

A LEGACY OF PHILANTHROPY popular trend to do research, particularly before making a significant donation. This ensures that the gift has more lasting, longterm benefits. For Anne, small, long-term gifts have produced the most relevant and evident impact, and she encourages others to do the same.

During his four day trip to The Bahamas in April 1959, part of a worldwide tour of the British Commonwealth, Prince Philip took advantage of an opportunity to join Sir Durward Knowles (a 1934 QC graduate) on his Star Class boat for a sail…. The Duke presented trophies to the winners of a Snipe & Star Sailing Race at the Royal Nassau Yacht Club. He also flew to Exuma to witness the Family Island Regatta. The Duke was well known for his love of sailing as the owner of a Dragon Class keelboat which he sailed competitively for many years.

Sir Durward competed that same year at the Pan American Games, winning Gold in the Star Class with sailing partner Sloane Farrington. He would later win the Gold Medal in Star Class at the 1964 summer Olympics in Tokyo with his sailing partner Cecil Cooke.

Anne Knowles-Lever is a proud1967 Rogers House graduate of Queen’s College. Her posture of giving back to QC started years before she accepted a trustee seat on the Queen’s College Foundation (QCF) Board, a post she is demitting and which was previously held by her father, Jack Knowles. Anne describes her father as an Eleuthera farm man to the Family Guardian startup, who supported all things Methodist.

Anne shares a particular memory of his serving on the QCF Board and being adamant that raising school fees was essential. Anne recalls her father’s passion for his position with four children enrolled at the time.

In addition to being an alumna, she began teaching at QC in 1972. Newly qualified and with limited teaching experience, Anne strongly believes that her successful teaching career, spanning some 30 years, was due to the firm foundation provided by QC. She recalls that her dad was not initially thrilled with her decision to return home, and encouraged her to stay in the UK to ‘gain some experience’. She is convinced however, that a better foundation would not have been found in any other part of the world.

Anne’s decision to return home has, over time, allowed her to continue in her father’s footsteps and advance her family’s legacy of philanthropy. She recalls that giving back has always been her family’s way. She maintains a philosophy that one should give meaningfully, and supports the

According to her, Jack Knowles was an extremely generous man; Anne endeavours to be the same and looks at giving as Mother Teresa did, understanding that “not all of us can do great things but we can do small things with great love.”

A SUMMER RECIPIE Raw Salted Almond Macaroons (makes 12 cookies) 1 cup flaked coconut 1/2 cup sliced almonds 1/4 cup chopped macadamia nuts 1/2 tsp sea salt (or to taste) 1/4 cup raw honey 1/4 cup coconut oil--should be room temperature, warm enough to stir easily 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

the mixture becomes somewhat smooth and paste-like; do not overprocess the mix, though, you are not trying to make it like a nut butter consistency. This step helps the cookies hold together better, but leaves a lot of variation in texture by only pureeing half of the mix.

Add the processed mix back in with the other half and stir well.

Form into 12-2” balls; pack each cookie together tightly, like a good snowball. You want them to stay together and not crumble when eating them, so they need to be pressed firmly to maintain their shape. Place on a plate or small sheet pan. Press down slightly on the cookies so the bottom is flattened and they don’t roll.

Chill for 1-2 hours before serving to help the cookies set.

Serve with a glass of milk, you could do almond or coconut milk if you like...you really can’t go wrong with these macaroons!

FATHER’S DAY

In Europe and Latin America, fathers day is celebrated on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday that falls on March 19.

For most of the world, the day is celebrated in June. The transition from a religious holiday to a secular tradition resulted from a world war and the urging of the United States President Calvin Coolidge, who urged state governments to observe Father’s Day as a national holiday. However, it was not until Richard Nixon that the day became a federal holiday.

The process of solidifying Father’s Day was not an easily won campaign; some speculate that the lack of enthusiasm was due to the absences of sentimentality over fathers compared to mothers.

Optional: 1 Tbs raw cacao powder In a mixing bowl, combine the coconut, almonds, macadamia nuts, and salt. Stir to combine.

Today, whether a result of sentimentality or retailers and advertisers focused effort to turn Father’s Day into a “second Christmas” for men, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion a year on Father’s Day gifts.

In a separate, smaller bowl, whisk together the vanilla, honey and coconut oil .

Pour the liquid mixture over the coconut mix and stir well. The dough should be slightly stiff and sticky, and just beginning to hold together. If you are making the chocolate version, add it in at this time.

Transfer half of the mixture to a food processor. Pulse several times to break up the larger pieces. Puree for 20-30 seconds until

PHILANTHROPY IN EDUCATION

Kenyada Meadows was the spokesperson of his family’s scholarship award presentation to the University of The Bahamas. The award was established to support dual degree majors at UB in the Business Studies, Liberal and Fine Arts, Pure and Applied Sciences and Social and Educational Studies disciplines. The fund will cover $25,000 in academic support.

Condolences are extended to the wife of Dr. Christopher Deane (Class of 1977), his siblings Gregory (Class of 1978), Norman (Class of 1981) and Charlotte (Class of 1987) and their families on the passing of their husband and brother (respectively). Chris was a passionate and caring veterinarian who owned a thriving private practice in Weston.
