CRISIS BACKGROUND

Five years since the conflict began in Yemen, its people remain gripped by one of the worst humanitarian crises in decades. Every day, almost 16 million people wake up hungry. Without food assistance this would jump to 20 million overnight. Tens of thousands of children have died of hunger or diseases that have become widespread. Even newborns barely have a chance to survive, as malnourished mothers cannot produce enough breastmilk to sustain their babies. The severe depreciation of the Yemeni Rial (YER) and closure of key trade routes also results in steep price increases for food and essential commodities, and further deteriorates the food security situation.

Islamic Relief has nine offices located throughout major cities in Yemen including its head office in Sana’a. It staffs more than 315 national and international employees dedicated to providing disaster relief and aid in the most troubled areas of the country. Our team in Yemen also utilizes the efforts of 2,900 volunteers to implement projects in various sectors across the country. In addition to delivering lifesaving emergency projects, Islamic Relief Yemen works on early recovery and development projects as well as child welfare programs. To ensure continuous implementation, Islamic Relief is an active member of clusters and coordinates closely with stakeholders including communities, UN agencies, national and international non-governmental organizations, local authorities and civil society. These agencies have shown their trust in Islamic Relief’s capacity and reach by supplying financial, technical, and in-kind support to help the Yemeni population.

COVID-19 RESPONSE To help combat the spread of Covid-19, your donations are helping us create an isolation centre equipped with medicines, medical supplies, medical equipment, and personal protective equipment. We are also able to raise awareness and educate the community to control the spread of Covid. Beneficiaries - 10,657 individuals
EMERGENCY LIFE SAVING ASSISTANCE TO ABYAN Yemen faces the largest food security emergency in the world. More than 15 million people require emergency food assistance each month. Many are starving to death and contributing significantly to the country’s overall mortality rate—a truly unprecedented reality. War has only exacerbated things as trade routes are shut down and important seaports are damaged. A depreciated currency has plunged Yemen further into poverty. This and many other reasons is why we’ve used your donations to distribute 3,000 emergency food baskets. These food baskets reached over 500 of the most atrisk families across 7 villages in the Abyan Governorate, which was one of the worst hit areas of the country. Beneficiaries - 3,640 individuals

EMERGENCY WATER SERVICES IN SADA’A A staggering 16 million people in Yemen have no access to clean water. In Sada’a Governorate, several water sources have been rendered nonfunctional. Diseases like cholera run rampant as people are forced to drink contaminated and unprotected water. We rehabilitated sources of water in Sada’a, mainly by installing a new pump that is fuelled by solar power. We trained committees of locals who can take over management of these sources, which includes testing the water regularly to make sure that it’s drinkable. Beneficiaries - 15,200 individuals
RAMADAN FOOD PACKS & EID GIFTS Hundreds of thousands of Yemenis lack the basic necessities needed to live. This is particularly hard during Ramadan, when families are supposed to gather in joyous worship when they break their fast. We were able to relieve some of the hardship by providing food packets filled with staple items like rice, wheat, and oil. On Eid, we also distributed gift bags containing clothing and other essential items to orphans. Beneficiaries - 14,800 individuals

ORPHAN SPONSORSHIP Many children in Yemen have lost one or both parents to starvation, war, or sickness. Your sponsorships of their well being helped protect the safety, health, education, and social environments of so many of these children. This allowed for orphans to be individually supported, which also improved their family’s stability while helping develop their communities’ resiliency. Beneficiaries - 649 individuals

YOUR IMPACT Yahya Elias, 45 years old, lives with his wife and four children. To escape the surrounding conflict, they were forced to move to a different district, leaving behind their house, farm and other properties. “We were happy and relieved before the conflict. Now our house is totally damaged therefore we had to move to where we can find safety and try to survive. We now live in only one room with no windows.

Our situation, as with many other displaced families, continues to deteriorate. With low income, sometimes we cannot manage to get even one meal a day. It has been very difficult for me to watch my kids suffering from lack of food. I always think about them. Sadly, when there is no food they become weak and dizzy.” Many households like Yahya’s received food supplies from Islamic Relief Canada. “Thanks to our brothers and sisters in Canada for providing food for my family and many others. I deeply appreciate it. May Allah bless and reward them for their assistance. Such help will cover our needs for the whole month.” Yahya expressed in joy.
