Emergency Background Heavy seasonal rains in Sudan starting in July 2020 caused devastating flooding, displacement, loss of livelihoods, and damage to infrastructure across all 18 states of the country. Nearly one million people are affected by the floods, which have caused casualties and widespread damage to more than 100,000 homes. The flooding situation has caused the River Nile to rise to its highest level in 100 years.

In West Kordofan, more than a dozen water sources have been damaged or destroyed. Hectares of crop land and livestock have been washed away, with homes, latrines and infrastructure destroyed.

The flooding emergency has exacerbated existing needs; Sudan had already been struggling due to the impact of Covid-19, the recently declared polio outbreak and the ongoing food security crisis which has left 9.6 million people across the country in a dire situation.

Our Work in the Region

Islamic Relief has been working in Sudan since the 1980s, providing both short term humanitarian assistance and long term development support.

We have been able to reach various communities in need through our partnerships with the government, UN agencies, as well as local community members.

The people of Sudan face two major challenges; one is the longstanding conflict in the country which has led to widespread displacement and the other is drought and other climate-related problems.

To address these we provide immediate relief like water and shelter, while working to find long-term solutions to issues such as access to clean water and improved livelihoods.

Islamic Relief has implemented various projects over 7 states in Sudan including Blue Nile, Central Darfur, North Kordofan, South Kordofan, West Kordofan, Khartoum, and Al Qadarif states. These projects span various sectors including Water Sanitation and Hygiene, Food Security, Orphan Sponsorship, Education, Development and Livelihood, as well as Emergency Relief and Child Protection.

Your Donations in Action With your support, Islamic Relief implemented and is continuing to implement a Shelter, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene project to respond to those in need in the El Nuhud, Wad Banda, and Gebbaish Localities of West Kordofan state, which had not yet received any assistance.

supporting the mobilization of communities to build emergency latrines, while the usual latrines are being rehabilitated. This includes providing cleaning and waste management tools to community volunteers to support cleaning damages and waste caused by the flooding.

Our project was focused on improving water, sanitation and hygiene conditions for flood-affected households.

With your support, we are providing assistance to more than 25,000 people with items including emergency shelter kits, mosquito nets, hygiene and dignity kits and water purification materials. In these distributions, female-headed households, the elderly, children, and people with disabilities were prioritized to ensure that we reach those who are most vulnerable.

A team of 60 hygiene promoters are trained to facilitate hygiene and sanitation messages throughout the community.

Our teams are leading 4 campaigns on hygiene and sanitation challenges, including water borne diseases and the contamination of water. In everything, we have taken a gender-sensitive approach to empower women and girls with hygiene knowledge and supplies.

We are continuing to work on rehabilitating water sources and pumps, as well as improving hygiene conditions and awareness. Our teams are
