INTERFAITH YOUTH LEADERS IN TRAINING VISIT FROM FINLAND

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE SOHO SOCIETY

On Tuesday 19th March, a group of young leaders from Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland visited the Temple as part of their interfaith trip to the UK. The group of 25 youth members enrolled in a course on leadership, were welcomed by Shyam Govinda dasa and Bhaktin Rebeca who addressed them on the topic of spirituality and leadership. Referring to the teachings of Srila Prabhupada, the talk was interactive giving the students an opportunity to ask questions and answer those put forward to them by the facilitators. The vibrant young visitors were genuinely interested in spiritual matters and deeply appreciated the atmosphere of the Temple Room and the beauty of the Deities. The visit helped broaden their perspective on religion.

On Thursday 21st March, Natasha Menon attended the annual general meeting which provides an opportunity to voice thoughts, opinions and concerns for Soho’s future and to speak to groups who are working to make Soho a great place to live, work and visit. The meeting reported on the work of the Society and included: Planning and Licensing, the Soho Village Fete, future of Oxford Street, future of The Hospital for Women in Soho Square, concerns over the loss of independent businesses in Soho, pollution and residential amenity, and other fundraising activities. The Executive team for the coming year was also elected. It was a great opportunity to connect with residents, individuals from the society and other local businesses.

It was attended by invitees from Hindu temples and organisations from across the country. Key guests included Lord Popat, Virendra Sharma, MP, Subhash Thakrar and CB Patel, Publisher/Editor of Asian Voice and Gujarat Samachar. Natasha Menon attended on behalf of the Temple. Communications ROYAL FREE HOSPITAL HOLDS INFORMATIVE EVENT AROUND MULTI FAITH AND BELIEFS ON DEEMED CONSENT From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have recorded a decision not to donate or are in one of the excluded groups. The Royal Free Organ Donation Committee organised an opportunity to discuss multi-faith and belief perspectives of major religions and belief systems on deemed consent at the Royal Free London NHS Hospital on Wednesday 27th March. The first part of the event included organ donation data and the latest deemed consent information, speakers included a transplant surgeon, a senior organ donation nurse, a psychologist (covering myths and barriers to organ donation) and patient stories (donor family and organ transplant recipient). The second part included speeches from multi-faith leaders from Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Jain and Humanist communities, a panel discussion followed by table discussions. ISKCON representative Nila Madhava dasa, Member of Senior Management and Funeral Director of Bhaktivedanta Manor, addressed the Hindu perspective along with Natasha Menon attending from ISKCON-London. UNITED FOR PEACE: LONDON’S COMMUNITIES UNITED AGAINST EXTREMISM One of the greatest threats we face in the society today are the acts of extremism trying to divide us. On Monday 29th April, Natasha Menon attended United for Peace, a national initiative organised by the Oxford Foundation, that draws UK’s diverse communities together to affirm the values that unite us. The values of respect, love, peace, compassion, and understanding, as opposed to the narratives of extremists advocating the ugliness of division, hatred, and violence. The interfaith service incorporated readings from different faith (and non-faith) traditions affirming these values, interspersed with moments of silent reflection and beautiful music in the majestic Hall at Clothworkers’ Company. The service brought together communities from across London to demonstrate that when people of all faiths and backgrounds come together, we are stronger in our fight against extremism. The event concluded with networking where Natasha had the opportunity to meet with Revd Dr. Richard Sudworth, National Inter Religious Affairs Adviser for the Church of England amongst many others. She shared with Revd Dr. Richard about ISKCON-London’s yearly Walk for Peace in southeast England. He commended our efforts in trying to spread the message of peace. ver the last few months, the team has had several university students joining them, all of whom have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have gone away and promoted the service to other students. The team has also had many monks join them from Bhaktivedenta Manor from ‘Be a monk for a week programme’ – these monks were given the opportunity to experience the service as part of their programme. Most of them found the service enjoyable and rewarding and considered it to be a valuable part of their monk experience.

Walk Against Hunger Against Hunger” which takes place on Saturday 29th June 2019. This fundraising walk is a 10-mile walk around central London starting at Soho Square. The walk symbolises Srila Prabhupada’s mission to ensure no-one goes hungry within a 10-mile radius of any ISKCON temple.

T

he fundraising team have made huge leaps in their fundraising campaign for a new van. The fundraising campaign was featured by various external media sources earlier in the year. The fundraising project hopes to raise £40,000 in order to purchase a new electric, carbon-neutral, food distribution van to help Food for life move closer to its ultimate goal – providing Krishna prasadam to nourish the bodies and souls of those most in need in a more efficient and hygienic way and from more locations whilst taking care of the environment. This project also aims to raise the standards of the current Food for life service in order to ensure it runs successfully for many years to come. The team has managed to raise well over £12,000 to date and has officially launched a walk titled “Walk

The highlight of the walk will be seeing iconic and historic sites in London, starting from Soho Square and walking through iconic monuments such as Tower Bridge, Trafalgar Square, the London Eye, London Bridge, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park and many more sites. The 10-mile walk is estimated to take around 3.5 hours. Temple President, Jai Nitai dasa, recently launched the Walk Against Hunger during a Sunday feast class at the Temple which was pleasantly received. Members of the fundraising team, Rajiv Nandha and Tina Savani, also did a short presentation at the Holy Name Easter Weekend Retreat in Germany with Sacinandana Swami. A promotional video was shown as part of a presentation to over 100 devotees including Sacinandana Swami who was inspired by the project and consequently offered the team his blessings and a kind donation for the cause. The fundraising team of over 15 volunteers and growing have all tirelessly contributed to this project and each volunteer is responsible for helping to make the project a reality.

The team requested him to be a part of the promotional video and he happily obliged. He was also given a Science of Self Realisation book by Tina, one of the Food for Life volunteers which he gratefully accepted and took away with him. He was quoted as saying “I saw people eating food and wondered what it was and wondered how they provide this food. I just went and donated to the cause and felt it was really kind of them to do this”. Watch: http://bit.ly/hkfilm-highlights

RADHA KRISHNA RECORDS Radha Krishna Records, ISKCON-London’s record label, is pleased to announce the completion of another wonderful devotee music composition, Mantra Lounge Volume 3.

The third instalment in the Mantra Lounge album series has been mastered, is about to be manufactured and should be ready to offer on the altar at the lotus feet of Lord Jagannatha by the time of London Rathayatra. The Mantra Lounge album consists of devotee musicians who sing at the now weekly kirtan meditation event, Mantra Lounge, held in Covent Garden. Together with the devotees and many professional musicians, the producer, Jagannatha Suta dasa (Jag), creates powerful and beautiful studio quality songs. This year, it proudly includes some artists from the Kirtan Leicester scene as well. One of the devotees, Radha London Isvara dasa, who recorded for the album explains, “I remember different devotees would come to do kirtan at the Temple and then I would be walking around London the next day thinking, he missed out on such profound, such an amazing kirtan last night, she missed out on it too, they missed out, this guy missed it...on and on. So that’s the record label’s function – to give more and more people access to the experience of connecting with Krishna.” The producer, Jag, says, “Listening to the master straight after its completion, I feel overwhelmed with how much love and devotion the devotees have all contributed to the album. The record takes you on a real spiritual journey, is very impactful, it has great depth. I really want to thank all the devotees who took part. I truly appreciate their sincere endeavours.” The album will officially be released in June 2019, including an amazing original artwork from Radhe Gendron and songs from the following devotees: Jahnavi Harrison, Ananda Monet, Radhika Ranjana, Kishori Jani, Asta Bria, Caitanya Cintamani, Gopibhava, Radha London Iswara and Narada.

Mantra Lounge Volume 1 and Volume 2 have received great feedback and appreciation and are available from Radha’s Boutique, all online digital channels, and www.radhakrishnarecords.com 22

regional ISKCON Canterbury Things are going well in Canterbury. There are approximately 25 attendees for the Saturday Nama Hatta sessions. The team has had and will have special guests attending almost every week from March until August 2019.The Monthly Sankirtan Festivalis also now up and running in Canterbury. Due to popular demand, the programme at Margate is now a weekly (not monthly) programme. Kirtan, discussion and cakes are organised every Thursday from 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Every week, the team meet a nice mix of locals and artists. Although there are five to ten attendees, there is plenty of scope for more. ISKCON Canterbury conducted their first ever Food for All programme in Margate. It was very successful, and they will finalise a regular venue soon. The venue owners have agreed for ISKCON Canterbury to use their venue for Food for All every Sunday for when it opens in April. The university programme has an average of 20 attendees per week, with numbers varying depending on exams, deadlines etc. All the current society committee members are graduating this year but there are three to five newcomers who are eager to serve the society and keep it running for the third consecutive year by enrolling as committee members. A trip has been planned to Bhaktivedanta Manor in early May, following which students will be taken to the Kirtan Mela in Canary Islands in September. The Krishna Consciousness festival at the university conducted in April went well – drama group The Bhaktivedanta Players attended the festival, Giridhari dasa led a class followed by kirtan.Thirupati Gauranga dasa provided prasadam to 45 students and the book table was successful.

spiritual mentorship system The editorial team requested Bhava Bhakti devi dasi to share some inputs on the background of the Spiritual Mentorship System, how it started and more. Q: Who were the first mentors at ISKCON-London? A: From what I can recall, it was Jai Nitai dasa, Akrura dasa, Murli Manohara dasa, Ram Charan dasa, Rama Shakti devi dasi and myself. Q: What does “initiation” mean? A: Initiation is to accept a spiritual master in our lives who we whole-heartedly accept to have the qualifications to lead us back to Godhead. This is not a decision that should be taken lightly and that is why we need senior guidance on this matter. Q: Is the Mentorship System only for

‘initiation purposes’?

(Q): When did the Spiritual Mentorship System start? Bhava Bhakti devi dasi (A): We officially launched it in March 2009, but it was operating unofficially for a year before that whilst we settled into it. Q: Who started the system at ISKCON-London? A: Jai Nitai dasa liked the concept of the Counsellor System in ISKCON Chowpatty, Mumbai and so initiated the idea of starting the same system in London. The Temple residents were already being looked after in a similar way as that in ISKCON Chowpatty but the Temple community did not have any such Spiritual Mentorship System to take shelter and guidance from. So Jai Nitai dasa felt it was imperative we create such a system for them.

A: Just in case anyone thinks that the Spiritual Mentorship System is just for those devotees who want to take initiation, please note this is not the case. It is the authorised route for being trained and approved for initiation – that is true, but the mentorship system is also for spiritual guidance, association, learning to hear from someone who has tread the path before and so can give some wise counsel and helpful tips. Q: Is there any criteria to join the Spiritual

Mentorship System?

A: Yes, there is. You must be chanting 16 rounds a day of the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra and following the four regulative principles. However, the mentor has the right to waive these criteria at their discretion if they see that the prospective mentee has the necessary sincerity to progress in spiritual life.
