In the first poster, I used multiple terms to analyze the Wonder Woman song I selected. I categorized these terms into two major groups, with the yellow font based on the feelings I got after listening to the song and the red font for an in-depth analysis of the musical notes. “Is she with you?” is a high-energy, rhythmically intense piece that exhilarates and sets a vigilant mood. Its strong articulation conveys urgency.

Developing design

Assessing our work

The final design’s key elements are :

Poster 5 | DEVELOP The final design's key elements are Variation, Imitation, Shape, Repetition, and Texture. Two similar windows correspond to the Imitation element, while the curvature of the windows also draws inspiration from the Variation found in the score. The sharp angles on the exterior of the house embody the Sharpness element, yet the interior space remains harmonious. Hard stone is chosen for the interior material, and the arrangement of stone blocks incorporates the Repetition element. The perimeter of the house will feature mirrored materials.

• Choosing a theme color for the poster and applying it consistently across all posters. • Using colors for terminology. • Labeling terms with numbers. • Including corresponding numbers and colors in the descriptions. The third takeaway was the effective use of highlighting in case studies, making the terms highly visual and easily understandable to the audience. Lastly, I integrated the acquired knowledge into my own designs and developed an understanding of the relationship between people, materials, and lighting within a space. This has been a very meaningful learning process.”

The second significant learning point for me was how to emphasize key elements within the limited space of a poster and present them in a clear and concise manner. I used the following methods:

1.

Two similar windows correspond to the Imitation element, while the curvature of the windows also draws inspiration from the Variation found in the score. The sharp angles on the exterior of the house embody the shape element, yet the interior space remains harmonious. Hard stone is chosen for the interior material, and the arrangement of stone blocks incorporates the repetition element. The perimeter of the house will feature mirrored materials.

“During this project, I learned how to find inspiration from the invisible and incorporate it into my architectural design. Clarifying a designer’s thought process to make it understandable to others is no easy task, and I gained valuable experience in this project.

Poster 1 | IDEA Is She With You? is a fast-paced and rhythmical piece of music that evokes a sense of excitement and alertness.

The first draft of poster 1

Based on the strong and compact rhythm, I envision this as a congregational architecture with cool color tones, and due to the stereotypical impression of superheroes, I would prefer the building to have a stealthy appearance, which is why I am considering the use of mirrored materials. I imagine the inhabitant of this building to have a fast-paced and highly disciplined lifestyle, so I aim to design the circulation of the building to be comfortable and efficient, with each space being functional and interconnected.

Site building, 2D and 3D “Where is she? “This is an upbeat and tensioninducing song. I’ve showcased repetition and proportion on the undulating peaks, variation in the elevation, fast rhythm, and the tense musical ambiance represented by the waterfall. The entire song has a soothing musical transition in the latter part, resembling a waterfall cascading into a river. Cluster and imitation are depicted on the trees and plants. After choosing the location, I used Google Maps to pinpoint the coordinates, compared 2D and 3D maps, and obtained Contour map data from Axis maps then fill in. I also researched sun, wind, and water flow direction in the area.

Final Poster 2

Site annotation 3D With reference to Google Maps’ 3D terrain, I converted the 2D contour map from Axis Maps into a 3D site topography map in Rhino, presented from an isometric perspective. I also added hatching to the isometric diagram. The plus sign indicates my site selection, which will be located behind the lake, facing the waterfall, offering the best views. The mountains will shield my site from most of the strong winds at higher elevations. I’ve established a viewpoint where the landscape seen from this spot will resemble the image on the left, while the image on the right illustrates the river flowing downstream from the lake, passing through the waterfall.

Site representation

Process framing The song I choose is the song of Wonder women. ‘Where is she? ‘ It’s a fast paced song and it will give people an intense feeling.

This is a 1:200 hollow site contour model made from 1mm cardboard. The site model provides visual assistance to the audience, making it easier for them to understand and visualize the selected site and its surrounding topography. It also helps the audience grasp the scale and proportion, improving communication between me and my audience. This site model will also be carried over for use in the next project. *Please refer to Appendix 1 for the model making process pp.36-37

Yuan Xu (102847827)

In addition, I would like to present Several connection between the song and the site when I was choosing the place. In assighment1, I used some terms to analyze the song, first is Articulation, which is Strong and powerful, and Sharp is Triangular or angular, Imitation I think those 3 words nicely shows between the mountains. I will show the fast rhythm and repeated drum beat on these rolling peaks.

Photographing light and time

In class, attempting to create a sketch model was initially challenging without a clear direction, yet the exercise often surprises me in moments of inspiration. After integrating ideas from songs, I started with triangular and angular (2) Shapes, incorporating them into three designs, transforming the stations into a cohesive series. I then created final models based on the musical characteristics of (3) Texture and (4) Color .

The sun rises and sets from a fixed direction every day, with its position constantly changing. In this poster, I chose to simulate sunlight inside Station 3, which has light sources from four directions, providing a thorough observation of the sun’s illumination. The lens takes a picture of the view from the window, which faces the front door. It shows how the scene changes from dark before dawn at 4:00 am to sunset at 6:00 pm.

• Station 1: Variation + Articulation • Station 2: Repetaiton + Propotion • Station 3: Imitation + Cluster

In the end, I obtained a fascinating set of light and shadow variations, confirming that the architectural orientation I established, based on the study of the site and sun direction, is exciting.

Perspective collaging Poster 5 shows what the inside of Station 3 looks like. To explore the interior, I first made a simple Rhino model for Station 3. Based on the words (10) Imitation and (9) Cluster, I chose a floor made of uneven stone and walls made of slate with irregular patterns, taking both texture and color into account. Finally, sunshine and characters are added as references

Transition diagramming From the beginning of the design process, I thought of the route map for the three stations as a hiking trail. There’s a slow part to the whole music, and I think the waterfall which in the middle of the route is a lot like that translation. We begin at Station 1, which is lower, and walk along the riverbank to see the higher stations and the waterfall. We keep going up the mountain and cross a bridge to get to Station 2, which is on the side of the mountain next to a waterfall. People can enjoy the view from inside the building or on the terrace. We move up until we reach Lake Quill. Then we follow the riverbank to get to Station 3.

Design development STATION 1 SECTION + FLOOR PLAN

At this stage, I attempted to select suitable drawings for my three micro-infrastructure stations. After discussing with my teacher, I made the following changes: • Station 1 - Changed from one-point section perspective collage to floor plan. • Station 2 - Changed from roof plan to onepoint section perspective I created digital models for them and began the initial drawing attempts.

Design resolution After my initial drawings based on the Rhino model, I encountered technical issues, seeking help from the teacher in class. Besides challenges with line weight in the Rhino to Illustrator conversion, I struggled with drawing stairs for Station 2. Linus patiently taught me various stair-drawing methods . And he also suggested me to review the techinical drawing I had learned before, and I quickly found my direction in drawing.

Feedback and suggestions from Linus on Miroboard

With method feedback, I began optimizing the six micro-infrastructure drawings.

Design refinement At this stage, Feedback was given to make changes. Due to the complexity and overlap of Station 1, the focus of the design was to draw the color depth and line thickness in terms of distance and distance. Station 2 can be accessed from the stairs and can be viewed from the outside. For Station 3, I made a Section to refer to the interior space and a ROOF PLAN for the surrounding landscape

Design Idea: People can draw inspiration from anything, such as fashion designers often borrowing color inspirations from beautiful natural creatures, or musicians finding melody inspiration from a rainy day. At this stage, I have not only learned how to translate this inspiration into the appearance of architecture but also how to correlate and apply them to different aspects of a building. It’s been an incredible exercise in transformation.

Notation: Lines and annotations are vital for expressing complex ideas in writing. They offer clarity, aiding understanding of connections and details. They visualize abstract concepts, enhancing communication and bridging the gap between creator and audience. These tools emphasize key elements, ensuring consistency, and aid in thought organization during review.

Week 1 Progress feedback

In Interpreting precedent studies section, I learned the significance of utilizing images to maximize visual expression and connect the key elements of interest. In my poster series, I interconnected the ten chosen terms, linking them to precedent studies and seamlessly integrating them into the design, enabling readers to understand my lessons from precedents and their practical application.

Assessing our work: Readers can come from diverse backgrounds and age groups, not necessarily design professionals. When conveying our ideas, it should be concise, clear, and easily understandable. If using technical terms, provide brief explanations to ensure a broader audience can comprehend your message.

Designing through sections has aided me in better comprehending space, proportion, and the application of elements to the building’s exterior, especially in terms of material usage. These aspects are not achievable through plans; only sections allow insight into the interior, enabling visualization of architectural materials and internal lighting.

Site mapping: This stage taught me to obtain data on sunrises, sunsets, water flow, and wind direction from excellent professional websites. It made me aware of the critical relevance of these factors when deciding where to construct a building. Given the limited space on the poster, conveying only the most crucial and straightforward information is paramount.

Site representation:Site models are rotatable, and our phones are adjustable in height. When taking photos, it’s essential to experiment with various heights and angles. This can include a top view parallel to the model or a ground-level view in focus. Focusing on high and low points in the model should be distinguishable.

Presentation: When delivering a team presentation, seamlessly transitioning between speakers and reinforcing one another’s points enhances the overall flow. Utilizing vocal variations and body language to emphasize crucial information captures the audience’s attention. Maintaining clear and concise language, highlighting key details, and summarizing at the end aids in information retention, strengthening memory.

Site analysis (isometric): Isometric site diagrams enhance spatial comprehension, design clarity, and possess stronger aesthetic appeal. They offer a clear view of elevation changes and water flow directions. However, they can be more complex, have visual blind spots, and may lack certain map details compared to 2D maps.

Page 26

Process framing: Utilizing the framework of framing, naming, moving, and evaluating techniques can aid individuals in presenting their ideas coherently, captivating the audience, and effectively conveying the design process and its outcomes. Moreover, people can progressively gain a deeper understanding of the adjustments and efforts made based on our descriptions.

Proportion through model making: Physical models offer a human-scale reference, aiding the understanding of spatial proportions and error detection. Digital models are advantageous for comparing proportions with extensive terrains. While digital modeling is more precise, it doesn’t provide the same human-scale perception of proportion during the design phase as physical models do.

Material exploration: In my initial exploration of music, I began by translating my sensory perception of music into ideas for materials and colors, which greatly facilitated this stage. Combining this with other terminology and insights from architectural precedents, I selected materials. Finally, by referencing models and rendering with various lighting directions, I created a more comprehensive, atmospherealigned rendering.

Light and Time: Effectively conveying the dynamic qualities of light and time in architectural drawings and renders involves depicting changing lighting conditions, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow, and using sequential drawings to create a visual narrative. Experimenting with rendering techniques and providing context through annotations enhances the understanding of evolving ambiance.

Communicating designs in design development stage: My reviewer found it easy to grasp my concept and functionality in Project 1. I selected ten terms in Project 1, providing ample choices during the design development phase. My precedent studies were diverse and clear. I incorporated two terms in each station to integrate design concepts, along with my envisioned color and texture preferences.

Communicating designs in design resolution stage: At this stage, my reviewer assisted in finalizing the representation choices for six drawings and provided feedback on my initial sketches. The teacher advised revisiting technical drawings studied last semester. Applying the acquired knowledge, I optimized the drawings in the first and second iterations.

Communicating designs in design refinement stage: I started adding details to the six drawings for this stage. Adjusting line colors and types, incorporating hatching in overlooked areas. This makes our building materials, surrounding topography, and the drawings more visually engaging. Using people or animals as references, I added interesting elements to enhance the overall appeal.

Is She With You? is a high-energy, intense piece that exhilarates and sets a vigilant mood.

In Precendent 1, the architectural profile on the side is remarkably (2) sharp, with prominent (1) articulation emphasized by the angular design of the cut-out sections. The (4) color employs mirrored materials that are also tileable in (3) texture. The lines of the windows on the wall introduce (8)Variation. On the opposite side, a (5) proportionate arrangement of similar staircases showcases (10) imitation, while a glass wall exhibits (7) repetition.

The poster mainly shows the correspondence between music scores, terminology and case studies. (1) Articulation and 6) Rhythm are reflected in the distinct elements. (2) Sharpness is embodied in tension-filled architectural shapes. (3) Texture and (4) Color pertain to material selection. These principles can be referenced across all cases without specific connections.

In Precendent 2, similar buildings are (9) clusted, each showcasing distinct (8) variations in form. Stacked eaves illustrate (2) imitation, adjacent (7) repetitive doors also stacked tiles, and (5) proportionate spaces divided by columns on the upper level, with the corridor forming a coherent (9) cluster.

The (7) Repetation element is extensively employed in doors and windows. (5) Proportion is evident in the spacing between columns, supports, and stairs. (8) Variation is often used for decorative effects in the external architectural outline. (9) Cluster refers to the grouping of multiple buildings. (10) Imitation is manifested in the internal hierarchy of the architecture.

Its strong (1) articulation conveys urgency. The (6) rhythmic intensity suggests (2) sharp,, angular architecture, cool (4) color tones, and a concealed , stone (3) textured interior. Reading the score, I find (5) proportional gaps in (9)clustered notes, repeated main melodies, and percussion for (7) repetition. (8)Varied note groupings and (10) imitated phrases add depth.

The final design's key elements are Variation, Imitation, Sharpness, Repetition, and Texture.

Site model making Cutting model components The Site model was cut by laser cutting in the early stage, which was divided into 3 layers of base plate in total. Due to the complexity of my contour map, the cutting time was too long, so it could only be divided into multiple printing and cutting, which took over 1.5 hours each time. The original files were produced in Rhino and illustrator. I simplified the lines as much as possible to ensure that the site model could be combined smoothly. The cutting process required constantly turning on the machine and using magic to paste small parts, which forced me to stay in the studio on the last day before due to line up to cut my works.

Prepare the file for laser cutting in ProtoLab

Combined model Taking the larger pieces of the component from each of the three layers board in turn, after some observation I found that it was easier to proceed along the four corners. The collage should be checked against the original countor map file to determine which parts are low in elevation. Finally, photos will be taken in ProtoLab after the glue of the collaged site model dries up. The completed site model
