“Convocando los sentidos, las sensaciones y el entendimiento de lo cercano; aquello que la filosofía suele pasar por alto: el espacio vivido y vivenciado. La experiencia del espacio siempre es la experiencia primaria del existir. Siempre vivimos en espacios, en esferas, en atmósferas. Desde la primera esfera en la que estamos inmersos, con “la clausura en la madre”, todos los espacios de vida humanos no son sino reminiscencias de esa caverna original siempre añorada de la primera esfera humana”.

Sobre este libro Por nacer en un entorno que tiene unas pautas de comportamiento, no se tienen porqué aceptar, la capacidad de desarrollo y autocrítica del ser humano le permite evolucionar y alejarse de destinos escritos. Es en este caso la mujer el gran ejemplo de la revolución necesaria de estructuras inmovilistas en las que el miedo a pérdida de cuotas de poder impide una realidad vital. Es la mujer la que lleva a cabo la gran revolución social en el mundo occidental y su revolución en otras regiones del mundo son las que permitirán y crearán

las bases de la igualdad mundial. Es por lo que en concreto esta exposición pretendo sea lo más femenina posible fuera de tipismos y simbolismos, que desde mi sexualidad y mi pensamiento igualitario encuentre camino de expresión en el respeto y homenaje a las dadoras de vida.

Este libro pretende continuar el debate que mi obra plantea: la “identidad” como algo dinámico e inestable innato a la propia naturaleza evolutiva y social del ser humano.

Desde este valuarte he colaborado con cinco mujeres que vertebran el desarrollo del libro junto a las imágenes de la exposición, video e instalaciones del proyecto: “imágenes de ausencia”. Los tres textos principales parten de mujeres que

han tenido experiencias de vida intensas, que han salido de sus lugares maternos, han cuestionado sus patrias, han evolucionado sobre ellas y han llevado a cabo planteamientos y propuestas destacables en su campo: la creación artística desde el compromiso social. Heta Tapio, Luz Angela Lizarazu, Marina Valencia y Aixa Portero de la Torre: La muerte de una hija, el asesinato de un padre, vivir con un traficante de armas, andar entre bombas, a quince bajo cero o en el sol del desierto, abandonar tus orígenes por la persona amada para después desamarla, vivir varias vidas y distintas familias, tres generaciones en una casa, llevar dentro una vida, acunarla, amarla… momentos de encuentro y desencuentro, de dejarse querer y de tomar decisiones. Son personas independientes, claro reflejo de la búsqueda de la liberación de la mujer, con situaciones particulares que han despertado en ellas actitudes y desarrollado filosofías que enriquecen el entendimiento del concepto de “identidad”.

La mujer es el verdadero motor del cambio de la identidad social desde el s.XX y las imágenes de ausencia, de lo que hablan es de momentos de transito, de huellas de algo que ya ha pasado. Forman parte de quienes somos pero ya no nos contienen, nosotros estamos fuera y lejanos de ellas, aparecen desarrollos progresivos que tienen debitos de su existencia, pero se desarrollan de manera independiente. La individualidad en la interpretación de quienes somos y cuales son nuestras formas y decisiones es vital para la construcción de una sociedad basada en la libertad fuera de los convencionalismos establecidos.

Ellas han escrito a partir de mis imágenes: mudas de serpientes (reflejo de un momento de transito) huevos (la progresión de la vida) crisálidas (la metamorfosis constante), insectos disecados (colecciones de lo más preciado), cajas donde envolvemos nuestros recuerdos, imágenes de nuestros sueños, símbolos de la sociedad, células y gráficos cósmicos que nos descubren nuevos mundos, palimpsestos

que muestran lo perecedero, etc., todo aquello que nos impide sentir inamovibles, que nos hace sentir el dinamismo en el que vivimos. Los momentos pasan a través de nosotros dejando cicatrices, pero pasan… no se quedan, nos afectan en distintas medidas. Es la individualidad la que nos lleva a obtener distintas visiones de nuestro pasado y de nuestra historia, de quienes somos y como entendemos la vida.

La política, la religión, las ideologías… han intentado definir las identidades para controlar la sociedad: qué sencillo es saber cual es el papel que uno debe de jugar en la sociedad cuando está escrito, pero los argumentos se reescriben en cada persona, cada uno tiene la capacidad de construir su futuro, de tomar sus decisiones en una actitud dinámica de cambio.

Han escrito desde la motivación y desde la libertad textos sumamente estimulantes, inéditos y específicos para enriquecer desde el ámbito de la creación y la reflexión éste proyecto.

A su vez, la poeta Julieta Valero ha elaborado una exquisita poesía en la que el mantra-salmo responsorial afirma la condición de: “Para ser todo cambia y nada permanece.

Para ser”, que es declamada incansablemente en el altavoz oculto en un cuadro.

Y el compositor Stanis Peinada ilumina con bellos y acertados sonidos el vídeo que en la capilla se muestra: “ovo, eiruga, volvoreta, crisálida” y para el espacio sacro-expositivo rescata e interviene una partitura del siglo XVII del archivo catedralicio de Granada.

Sobre la intervención artística Me dedico a crear realidades que no lo son: Imágenes y objetos que parecen hacer referencia a un sin fin de mundos, que prestan sus apariencias de la naturaleza, de la nanotec-

nología, la astrofísica, la microscopía, las matemáticas, la física, la química, los restos arqueológicos, los símbolos, los iconos y las runas, de las escrituras, las nubes y los fluidos, de la geografía, arqueología y espeleología, de la joyería, de los sombreros, los vestidos y zapatos, de los espacios vacíos, de la anatomía, animales y seres mitológicos, … con la pretensión de conectar y excitar la apatía, al crear una obra cargada de realidades y connotaciones directas con contextos veraces que a la vez están repletas de artificios e irrealidad.

Su existencia subjetiva, con referentes inconcretos, resemblanzas incompletas y pervertidas están siempre visibles en alerta para conectar con el espectador, para que la obra continúe existiendo en su percepción y descubrimiento, el cual asocia lo percibido con su propia realidad, con su bagaje, sus conocimientos y sus experiencias. Es vital permitir y favorecer que el espectador se identifique ante la obra y descubra su propio bestiario, despierte la memoria y evoque actitudes ante las propuestas.

Si mostramos un elefante, verán un elefante, si se muestra una nube con forma de elefante, ante la obviedad, verán una nube con forma de elefante. Hay personas como “el principito” que son capaces de ver ante la imagen de un supuesto sombrero una realidad diversa como una pitón que 10

ha comido un elefante. Esa es la percepción que me interesa ante la obra de arte, es la forma que a mí personalmente me mueve y conmueve: relacionarme con el entorno y tratar con personas que ven el mundo de forma particular e individual fuera de códigos cerrados y establecidos. Es por lo que, pretendo que mi obra potencie percepciones lo más alternativas posibles no sólo en lo preciso sino en la extensión de la actividad y la obra: Ernst Cassirer defiende en su obra La filosofía de las formas simbólicas, “la naturaleza de las formas como contenedoras de las expresiones del pensamiento, como matrices de la simbología que determina el alcance del progreso dialéctico de la cultura. Las formas adquieren un significado simbólico de representación de lo que se piensa o se percibe como realidad, esto es, son un producto de la función representativa de pensamiento”.

Todo esto no quiere decir que se juegue con una falta de concreción, al contrario, lo que se pretende es que el espectador no pase de manera indiferente ante una obra al tener una lectura inmediata o imposible, sino que conecte con su realidad, que disponga de los recursos suficientes para que no escape ante su percepción que le lleve a conectar con su pasado y presente, y que le modifique su futuro, tanto en cuanto forma parte de sus circunstancias. Esta conexión es la

que permite comprender y acercarse al significado de los planteamientos globales de la obra. Una experiencia que forme parte de su vida, que se mantenga en el recuerdo y se relacione con sus conocimientos y experiencias.

Las obras como los “mantras”, sin contener o referirse a algo concreto, pretenden que su observación, en una aptitud reflexiva, ayude a liberar la mente en un descubrimiento del individuo. Cada obra destaca un aspecto con el que el observador puede identificarse. Muchas de las formas que utilizo son repetidas y recreadas en distintos soportes, viajan, se interaccionan con el entorno, se registran, se documentan, etc. ampliando y extendiendo su campo de influencia. La observación forma parte de la extensión de la obra trascendente a la forma, a la figuración, a la delimitación y a toda explicación que se manifiesta cual fórmula mágica, palabra creadora o plegaria.

Es fundamental en mi obra incentivar conexiones conceptuales en los más distintos niveles. Toda mi labor forma parte de un proyecto complejo en el que las obras son tan sólo palabras de un discurso en el que el tiempo y el espacio son elementos fundamentales. Cada instalación, performance, viaje, película, conferencia o exposición forman parte de la obra artística que desarrollo en la que el aspecto

social es fundamental. Las conexiones establecidas entre todas estas piezas construyen un discurso contemporáneo y elaborado en las que la sociedad forma parte del experimento y de las reflexiones. Las obras viajan y se instalan por todo el mundo, los tiempos y modos de exposición son sumamente diversos: repetitivos y alternos en el tiempo, efímeros, eternos hasta la propia pérdida, robo o destrucción de ésta…. Mi actividad creativa necesita interferir en los más diversos espacios, la obra debe de desarrollarse y conectarse en entornos físicos y sociales distintos que ayuden al establecimiento de relaciones conceptuales entre la obra y su inferencia en los distintos ámbitos humanos. En concreto el espacio de Gran Capitán me permite exponer en dos espacios que suelo utilizar al unísono, el artístico y el sagrado: son muchas las iglesias, mezquitas, templos, sinagogas, etc. que han sido “profanadas” con mi obra en una búsqueda de espacios de significado. En mi desarrollo artístico no suelo tener ningún tipo de prejuicio a la hora de escoger el lugar para llevar a cabo una intervención, ya sea un espacio publico, privado, expositivo o no, legal o ilegal, permitido o no,… siempre que sea el necesario, aquel en el que la obra encuentra su sentido, en el que se desarrolla de manera apropiada y aporta la argumentación o reflexión adecuada.

Otro factor importante en mi trabajo es la implicación de actores en los distintos proyectos, sin que tengan que ser exclusivamente artistas plásticos, o vinculados al ámbito creativo. Todo ello lleva al establecimiento de conexiones antes inexistentes con la creación y las deliberaciones desplegadas.

Si a todo ésto se le suma la actuación en numerosos países, lugares y tipologías de personas, todo ello nos permite la creación de conexiones que, argumentadas a partir de la teoría del “efecto mundo pequeño (Small World effect)” o “seis grados de separación, Stanley Milgram, 1967” en el que cualquier persona puede ser relacionada a través de una cadena corta de relaciones sociales, construyen la red de influencias necesarias para que las pretensiones socializadoras y educativas del trabajo se expandan, desarrollen, conecten y formen sólidos nodos de interpretación e implicación. En esta pretensión de conexión y expansión de la obra artística es donde tienen cabida el gran numero de colaboradores que participan con sus reflexiones teóricas en la edición de libros que completan desde distintos puntos de vista conceptos comunes.

Siempre existe una necesidad humana de definir, de agrupar, de archivar… y en esta necesidad siempre existe la pregunta de ¿qué eres? Pintor, escultor, grabador,… ante lo que no cabe concretar ya que los soportes creativos siempre han sido y serán aquellos que den respuesta a mis necesidades indistintamente de desarrollarse en forma de video, pintura, grabado, escultura, impresión digital, dibujo, autómata, artilugio… o cualquier proceso innoble fuera de los ámbitos habituales artísticos ya sean perdurables o efímeros, naturales, sintéticos o tecnológicos. Lo importante es que éstos sean y formen parte de lo necesario para transmitir y construir el proyecto y ayuden a su propósito. Es la idea que quiero desarrollar, la que define la forma, material, presentación, característica, ubicación… de mi obra

Sobre las imágenes de ausencia En concreto “imágenes de ausencia” hace referencia a que lo mostrado en la exposición, a pesar de parecer real, y serlo tanto en cuanto está presente, es visible, tocable, fotografiable, archivable, etc, son “presencias” que hacen referencia a ausencias: momentos concretos que dieron lugar a su existencia, pero dichos momentos en los que se generaron ya han pasado, fueron momentos y circunstancias que generaron situaciones y ahora éstas en las que se desarrollan son distintas. Cada obra está asociada a un momento, a una realidad, pero ya han dejado de existir tal como fueron; ahora la distancia espacio-temporal nos permite apreciarlas con distancia y reinterpretarlas desde nuevas posiciones. Estas obras pretenden ser una representación de la naturaleza dinámica y mutable de las personas, de los países, del mundo, del universo… la identidad, se pretende paralizar, y yo ofrezco mi obra como algo que ya no soy, ya no es mi identidad, ahora es una realidad que interacciona con la de los espectadores y que pretende modificar sus identidades para ser catalizador de modificaciones que conecten y alteren su percepción y su naturaleza. Objetos encontrados que muestran de forma ordenada y rítmica hechos pasados, elementos con historia y connotaciones, huellas de actos intencionados, ensoñaciones que recuerdan quienes fuimos y quienes ahora ya no somos. De aquí la realización de formas abiertas que viven en el mundo de lo onírico, a pesar de que tengan una apariencia sólida y real. Sin embargo, en su irrealidad y diversidad permiten establecer relaciones en el recuerdo que encuentran espacio de conexión en la memoria.

Lo mutable es la esencia propia a la existencia, miramos en todo momento hacia atrás para recordar quienes fuimos al mismo tiempo que vertiginosamente estamos cambiando. Son muchos los motivos que llevan a defensas inmo-

vilistas ante los procesos de cambio que suceden constantemente en el mundo. Indiscutiblemente no todo cambio es positivo, como se pudiera desear, pero es inevitable tanto en cuanto cualquier interacción los propicia, es tan sólo el aislamiento o el condicionamiento impuesto el que consigue su demora. Han sido la religión, la política o cualquier otro elemento de poder los que han conseguido manipular y condicionar el comportamiento de las masas. Para poder llevar ésto a cabo, como bien explican las teorías de psicología de masas, es fundamental unir a todo un colectivo en un aspecto estable y común, en una identidad también común convirtiéndolos en fácilmente manipulables al perder la individualidad.

El ser humano se desarrolla de forma social pero de forma individual, a pesar de poder sentirse identificado en un colectivo concreto posee una forma específica de desarrollo y de pensamiento que lo lleva a diferenciarse y evolucionar tanto en cuanto se relaciona con un entorno. Es permeable a todo aquello con lo que entra en contacto ya sea consciente o inconscientemente. Es el miedo el que lleva en muchos casos a un inmovilismo irracional en el que las estructuras estables no cuestionen nuestros actos y decisiones. Lo establecido, la normalización, hace estable lo inestable, ante el miedo de las reacciones humanas de desarrollos perniciosos, de desequilibrios entendidos desde posturas personales sobre el entendimiento de lo que debe o no debe ser.

“Evoking the senses, the sensations and the understanding of what is close; that thing that philosophy usually fails to remember: spaces that are lived in and experienced. The occupation of the space is always the primary experience of existence. We live in spaces, in spheres, in atmospheres. From the first sphere in which we are immersed, with “the enclosure in the mother “, all the human spaces of life are nothing but reminiscences of this original cavern, the first human sphere we always long for”.

Concerning this book Being born in an environment with established guidelines of behaviour is not a reason to accept them. The ability of human beings to develop and self-criticise allows them to evolve and move away from pre-imposed destinies. In this regard, woman is the great example of the necessary revolution of immovable structures in which the fear of losing power prevents a vital reality. It is woman who carries out the great social revolution in the western world, and her revolution in other regions of the world will facilitate the creation of the ba-

sis of world equality. That is why I aim for this exhibition to be as feminine as possible, evading archetypes and symbolism so that, from my gender and my egalitarian beliefs, it could find means of expression respecting and honouring the providers of life.

This book seeks to continue the debate that my work raises: “identity” as something dynamic and unstable, innate to the evolutionary and social nature of the human being.

From this loom I have worked with five women that articulate the development of the book along with the images of the exhibition, video and installations of the project: “images of absence”. Three main texts are written by women who have

had intense experiences of life, who have left their homes, have questioned their motherlands, have evolved from them and have taken approaches and carried out prominent works in their fields: the artistic creation from the social angle. Heta Tapio, Luz Angela Lizarazu, Marina Valencia and Aixa Portero de la Torre: The death of a daughter, the murder of a father, to live with a dealer of weapons, to walk among bombs, from minus fifteen degrees to the heat of the desert, to renounce your origins for the person you love and then later leave that person, to live several lives with different families, three generations in a house, to raise a life within, to cradle it, to love it … moments of meeting and misunderstanding, moments of being loved and making decisions. They are independent people, a clear reflection of the search for woman’s liberation, with particular situations that have awoken attitudes and developed philosophies that enrich the understanding of the concept of “identity”.

Woman is the real engine of social identity change of the twentieth century and what the images of absence explore are moments of transit, remnants of things that have already happened. They are part of what we are but they do not contain us anymore, we are outside and distant from them, progressive developments appear due to their exis16

tence, but they develop in an independent way. The individuality in the interpretation of who we are and what our mindset and decisions are is vital for the construction of a society based on freedom from established conventions.

Inspired by my images, they have written: the skin shed by a snake (reflection of a moment of transit); eggs (the progression of life); chrysalises (the constant metamorphosis); dissected insects (collections of the most valued thing); boxes where we wrap our memories, images of our dreams, symbols of society, cells and cosmic graphs that reveal new worlds, palimpsests that show us the perishable side of things; etc. All that prevents us from feeling immovable, that makes us feel the dynamism in which we live. The moments pass, leaving scars, but they pass… they do not remain, they affect us in different ways and to different extents. It is individuality that leads us to obtaining different perspectives of our past and history, of who we are and of how we understand life.

Politics, religion, ideologies… all have tried to define identity in order to control society: how easy it is to know which role one has to play in society when it is expected, but the arguments are rewritten in every person, each one has the aptitude to construct their own future, to take their own decisions in a dynamic attitude of change.

They have written from motivation, and from freedom, extremely stimulating, unpublished and specific texts to enrich this project with their reflection and creativity.

In turn, the poet Julieta Valero has composed an exquisite poem in which the mantra/responsorial psalm affirms the condition of: “to be, everything changes and nothing remains. To be”, which is recited untiringly from a secret loudspeaker in a picture. And the composer Stanis Peinado illuminates with beautiful and appropriate sounds the video that appears in the chapel: “ovo, eiruga, volvoreta, crisálida” as well as reawakens and performes for the sacred-exhibition space a 17th century score belonging to the Granada cathedral archive.

Regarding the artistic intervention I devote myself to the creation of realities that are not: Images and objects that seem to refer to many worlds, that take their appearance from nature, from nanotechnology, astrophysics, microscopy, mathematics, physics, chemistry, from archaeological remains, symbols, icons and runes, from writings, clouds and fluids, geography, archaeology and speleology,

from jewellery shops, from hats, clothes and shoes, from empty spaces, from anatomy, animals and mythological beings… with the aim of connecting, and banishing apathy, having created a work loaded with realities and direct connotations to truthful contexts that are simultaneously replete with artifices and unreality.

Its subjective existence, with undefined paradigm, incomplete and perverted resemblances are always visible, ready to connect with the audience, to make the work exist in their perception and sight, what associates what they have perceived with their own reality, with their baggage, their knowledge and their experiences. It is vital to allow and to assist the spectator in identifying himself with the work and discovering his own bestiaries, awaking the memory and evoking attitudes towards what it is offered. If we show an elephant, they will see an elephant, if a cloud appears with the shape of an elephant, faced with the obvious, they will see a cloud in the form of an elephant. There are people like “le petit prince” who are able to see a diverse reality behind an apparent image, such as a python that has swallowed an elephant instead of a simple hat. This is the perception I am interested in when facing the task of creating art, it is the approach that moves me and touches me: to interact with the 17

environment and with people that have a particular and individual view of the world, free from closed and established codes. That is why my work aims to promote as many alternative perceptions as possible, not only in the precise thing but in the extension of the activity and the work: Ernst Cassirer defends in his work The philosophy of symbolic forms, “the nature of the forms as containers of expressions of thought, as counterfoils of the symbology that determines the scope of the dialectical progress of culture. Forms acquire a symbolic meaning of representation of what is thought or is perceived as a reality, they are a product of the representative function of thought “.

This does not mean that we are playing with a lack of definition, on the contrary, what is intended is that the spectator does not react indifferently towards the work having either an immediate or an impossible insight, but connects with its reality, having enough resources not to escape before his perception that, in turn, will lead him to connect with his past and present, and will modify his future, as it is a part of his experience. This is the connection that allows the understanding and approach of the global aims of the work. An experience that becomes part of his life, that remains in his memories and connects with his knowledge and experiences.

Works like “mantras”, without containing or referring to something concrete, aim for their observation, in a reflective attitude, to help liberate the mind in a discovery of the individual. Each work emphasizes an aspect in which the observer can be identified with. Many of the forms I use are repeated and recreated in different media, they travel, interact with the environment, are registered, are documented, etc., widening and extending their field of influence. Observation is part of the extension from the transcendent work to the form, to the imagination, to the delimitation and to any explanation that shows itself as a magic formula, creative word or prayer.

In my work it is essential to stimulate conceptual connections on different levels. All my labour is part of a complex project in which works are just words of a speech in which time and space are essential elements. Every installation, performance, trip, film, conference or exhibition is part of the artistic work I develop where the social aspect is always crucial. The connections established between all these pieces construct a contemporary and elaborate speech where society is part of the experiment and of the reflections.

The works travel and establish themselves all over the world, the time and means of exhibition are extremely diverse: repetitive and alternate in the time, ephemeral, eternal up to their own loss, theft or destruction.

My creative activity needs to interact with the most diverse spaces; the work has to develop and to connect with different physical and social environments that help establish conceptual relationships between the work and its inference within different human spheres. The space of Gran Capitán allows me to exhibit in two spaces that I am in the habit of using simultaneously, the artistic and the sacred one: many churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, that have been “profaned” by my work in search of spaces with meaning. In my artistic development I do not usually have prejudice when choosing the place in which to carry out an intervention, whether or not it is a public, private or exhibition place, legal or illegal, allowed or not, … as long as it is the necessary one, the one in which the work finds meaning, in which it develops in an appropriate way and contributes to the argument or suitable reflection.

Another important factor in my work is the use of actors within the different projects, not necessarily being plastic artists, or linked to the creative area. All this leads to the establishment of connections non-existent before, with the creation and the unfolded deliberations. All this, together with the performances in numerous countries, places and types of

people, allows us the creation of connections that, from the theory of the “Small World effect” or “six degrees of separation, Stanley Milgram, 1967”, where any person can be related across a short chain of social relations, construct the net of necessary influences, in order for the social and educational pretensions of the work to expand, develop, connect and shape solid nodes of interpretation and implication. It is in this aim of connection and expansion of the artistic work where the great number of collaborators who take part with their theoretical reflections in the edition of books that complete, from different points of view, common concepts, fit.

There always exists a human need to define, group, file … and from this need the question arises “what are you?”

Painter, sculptor, engraver, …there is no need to specify there since the creative media have always been, and will be, those that answer my needs, no matter whether in the shape of a video, painting, engraving, sculpture, digital print, drawing, robot, useless device,… or any ignoble process out of the habitual artistic areas, either lasting or ephemeral, natural, synthetic or technological. The important thing is that these media are part of what is needed to transmit and to construct the project and to help to achieve its final aim. The idea I want to develop is what defines the form, material, presentation, characteristics, location,… of my work.

Regarding images of absence “Images of absence” refers to the idea that despite what is shown in the exhibition seeming to be real, because it is present, is visible, tangible, photographable, achievable, etc., it is just “presences” that refer to absences: precise moments that gave rise to their existence, but those moments have already passed, they were moments and circumstances that generated situations that have now developed into

something different. Every work is associated with a moment, with a reality, which has stopped existing as it was; now the spatiotemporal distance allows us to estimate them at a distance, and to reinterpret them from new positions. These works intend to be a representation of the dynamic and mutable nature of each person, of the different countries, of the world, of the universe … the identity is intended to be paralyzed, and I offer my work as something that I am not anymore, it is not my identity anymore, now it is a reality that interacts with that of the observers and that tries to modify their identities in order to be a catalyst of modifications that connect and alter their perception and their nature. Opposing objects that show, in an organised and rhythmic way, past facts, elements with history and connotations, fingerprints of meaningful acts, dreams that remember who we were and who we no longer are. From here the production of opened forms that live in the oneiric world, in spite of having a solid and real appearance. Nevertheless, in their own unreality and diversity they allow the establishment of relationships with the remembrance, finding a space to connect with the memory.

Mutability is the essence of existence, we constantly look backwards to remember who we were, at the same time we are dizzily changing. There are many reasons that lead to inflexible defence against the process of constant change in the world. Indisputably not every change is positive, as would be desirable, but it is inevitable as any interaction propitiates them, it is only the isolation or the imposed conditioning which results in its delay. It has been religion, politics or any other element of power, which has managed to manipulate and determine the behaviour of the masses. To achieve this, as the theories of psychology of masses explain, it is fundamental to unite a whole group in a stable and common outlook, into a likewise common identity, which will render them easily influenced, having lost their individuality.

The human being develops himself in a social but individual way, in spite of being able to feel identified with a particular group, he possesses a specific way of developing and of thought that leads to his differentiation and evolution as a result of interacting with the environment. He is permeable to all he enters into contact with, either consciously or unconsciously. It is fear which leads, in many cases, to an irrational resistance to change in which the stable hierarchies do not question our acts and decisions. What is established, normalization, makes the unstable stable faced with the fear of the perniciously developed human reactions, of imbalances understood from personal views on the perception of what must or must not be.

El pasado se ha ido y el futuro nunca llega

Soledad, relaciones humanas, que anhelan inmortalidad, astillas de una mente humana, esperanza. Todo lo que queremos olvidar está siempre aquí. ¿Es fácil ver la belleza, pero quién desafía a ver la belleza en la fealdad?

La realidad de la existencia de otras culturas y otras comunidades no puede ser ignorada. Según mis propias experiencias, vivimos nuestras vidas inconscientemente creyendo que las cosas serán permanentes, hasta que nos enfrentamos con la pérdida. La vida en sí misma es efímera.

Todas las experiencias que hemos tenido, incluyendo al momento presente ¿ha permanecido alguna?

Nada puede darnos la satisfacción o la felicidad duradera.

El pasado se ha ido y el futuro nunca llega. Tenemos que vivir en este momento, que se ha ido antes de que nos demos cuenta.

Esto es una oportunidad ideal de observar como la compasión, de forma natural, crea una atmósfera positiva.

Ser compasivos nos aporta fortaleza interior.

Tanto en cuanto somos miembros de una sociedad, necesitamos su compasión, de la misericordia humana. ¿Pero, es posible llevarlo a cabo sin la militancia en una “religión”? Lo cual en algunos casos puede hacer la vida más simple y quizás más fácil. Pero de cualquier forma no

debemos evitar que con celo mantengamos, los valores positivos de la condición humana.

Hoy, como el mundo se hace más pequeño y más pequeño, el concepto de “nosotros” y “ellos” está casi tan pasado de moda como los valores, los buenos modales y todas aquellas cualidades humanas positivas que juegan un papel precioso e importantísimo.

Las cuales debemos forzarnos a tenerlas presentes de manera consciente ante la realidad del mundo moderno.

De esta manera podremos plantearnos el solucionar las dificultades y contrariedades.

Lo cual implica tener presente en la vida el trabajo y el esfuerzo, y sobre todo, esfuerzo.

Pues, rezando y dando las cosas simplemente por sentando, no podemos obtener la paz.

Cada ser humano debe tener la experiencia de conseguir una pista incorrecta, para después ser capaz de buscar valores positivos en aras de la inconsistente perfección.

Lo agradable y lo desagradable siempre surge y también pasa.

Siempre parpadeantes, la ley natural e ineludible del universo sostiene la perfección sólo un pequeño momento.

Si nos dejamos llevar por la quimera de la perfección imperecedera, se nos hacen visibles lo limitado de nosotros mismos.

Saber dejar que las cosas y los acontecimientos se desvanezcan siempre libera.

Todas las preguntas sobre la sexualidad son misterios no resueltos.

El odio y el amor, el bien y el mal, el valor o el miedo siempre dependen de en que condiciones y situaciones se ubiquen y desarrollen.

The past is gone and the future never arrives

Loneliness, human relationships, yearning for immortally, splinters of a human mind, hope. All we want to forget is always here.

It is easy to see the beauty, but who dares to see beauty in the ugliness?

The reality of the existence of other cultures and other communities cannot be ignored neither. According to my own experiences, we live our lives unconsciously believing that things will be permanent, until we faced with the loss. Life itself is impermanent. Passing through the present moment, all these experiences we have had, did any of them last?

Nothing can give us ever lasting satisfaction or happiness.

The past is gone and the future never arrives. We have to live into this moment; it is gone before we realize it.

This is an ideal opportunity to observe how compassion naturally creates a positive atmosphere. Compassion brings us an inner strength.

As long as we are members of human society, we need human compassion.

Is it possible to manage without religion?

In some cases it may make life simpler and easier. But we have to keep the value of good human qualities.

Today, as the world becomes smaller and smaller, the concept of “us” and “them” is almost out-dated so, the values, good manners and those good human qualities play very important and precious role.

The reality of the modern world means that we need to learn to think in this way.

In this way we can solve the problems.

It means work and effort, and yes, more effort.

Simply by sitting and praying cannot give us peace.

Every human being must have the experience to get a wrong track, to be able to seek the good values and perfection.

Pleasant and unpleasant always arise and pass.

Every time we blink, natural and inescapable law of the universe holds perfection only a little moment.

If we let go of the fiction, ever lasting perfection, we become aware of our personal limits.

Letting things go is always liberating.

All questions about sexuality are unsolved mysteries.

Hate and love, right and wrong, bravery or fear depend conditions and situations.

Situations created by the mind, caused physical actions.

All our actions shape our future.

The successful fulfilment of the action brings positive energy and result.

We often cannot see clearly how human mind operates. Therefore some of our actions can be harmful and increase aggression.

The images of absences, the cycle of birth and rebirth, randomly pop into our mind.

Let them go when their time is up.

La ilusión de un destino

“Tener identidad, es tener la ilusión de un destino”.

La identidad tiene las fronteras porosas. Cuando pensamos en identidad, pensamos en algo que está continuamente transformándose. La identidad no puede permanecer inmutable, siempre que hay un encuentro con otro, con otros, es desafiada, afirmada, puesta en duda, agrietada. En todo caso es activada. No podemos pensar la identidad sin tener en cuenta algunas de sus variables más visibles: identidad cultural, identidad étnica, identidad de género, sólo por nombrar algunas.

La identidad habita en el borde entre lo individual y lo colectivo, anida en el universo privado y se concreta en el flujo de lo público. Ella misma es exiliada, no pertenece específicamente a ningún lugar.

La identidad se filtra en las nociones más diversas y es tomada como elemento constitutivo, va tejiendo la vida con nudos que abarcan desde el país en el que nacimos, si somos hijos deseados o del accidente, si fuimos educados, como, por quienes, si asumimos una religión, si el sexo que deseamos practicar coincide con nuestro género, terminan siendo las primeras bases visibles de la identidad concebida como tal, en el mundo contemporáneo occidental. La identi-

dad no sólo es resultado de la elección, el caos y el azar juegan un papel importante que determina el lugar que habitamos, por resignación o por opción, la gente que nos rodea, por accidente o por selección. La identidad por opción o por fuerza nos da forma, concepto, contenido.

La Real Academia de la Lengua la define como el “conjunto de rasgos propios de un individuo o de una colectividad que los caracterizan frente a los demás; la conciencia que una persona tiene de ser ella misma y distinta a las demás”. ¿Es la identidad un conjunto de rasgos culturales que caracterizan a un grupo social y que pueden ser descritos por un observador externo? En este caso ¿el cambio de esos rasgos altera la identidad, o esta se mantiene a pesar de que todo cambie? Se pregunta Jorge Orlando Melo, historiador y ensayista colombiano.

Cualquier definición de la palabra lleva a callejones sin salida. Es casi inevitable sostener que la “identidad” en el mundo actual, no puede reducirse a los rasgos de lo local, pues esta puede incluir infinidad de cosas que vienen de fuera.

La permanente construcción de la identidad es también pensar lo que “NO” se es, y el mundo actual es el escenario en el que más cerca ha estado “lo otro” “lo que no se es”. Somos espectadores en tiempo real de las guerras que tienen un fuerte arraigo en la identidad, algunos, que somos cada día más, podemos navegar por Internet y acceder a la más diversa información a la vez que hay pueblos que todavía no tienen acceso a carreteras o a agua potable y conservan su identidad en medio de la pobreza y del desconocimiento global.

Mow be’ líder de 200 indígenas Nukak Maku (comunidad nómada que habita en las selvas colombianas) que llegaron desplazados a San José del Guaviare, Colombia; se

suicidó con barbasco, una planta venenosa que es utilizada por su pueblo para la cacería y la pesca. Así lo registró el diario El Tiempo “Según Guber Hernández, funcionario de la Oficina de Asuntos Indígenas de la Secretaría de Gobierno del Guaviare, al parecer la depresión, el choque cultural, las envidias y la aparente ‘fama’ que ganó Mow be’ le ocasionaron muchos problemas. Incluso hay versiones sobre un supuesto lío amoroso del que nunca pudo salir.”De un momento a otro se volvió importante porque hablaba el lenguaje de los nukak y además conocía el español -dice Hernández-.

Eso lo enfrentó a una cultura que lo envolvió y lo confundió, tanto que terminó ganándose la fama de mentiroso e incumplido porque rara vez llegaba con soluciones a las peticiones

de su gente”. La maraña burocrática para recibir ayuda del Estado y las promesas incumplidas se constituyeron en su dolor de cabeza. Él era apenas un mensajero, pero su gente empezó a responsabilizarlo. Pero no solo a él lo deslumbró la ‘civilización’. Mientras algunos nukak quieren regresar a su hábitat, de donde partieron hace más de un año, otros están fascinados con lo que aprendieron en San José” El relato de Mow be’ es tan aislado como universal. Aislado porque la singularidad de pertenecer a un grupo nómada que habita en la selva tropical, que se alimenta de la caza y la recolección, resulta casi el paradigma de “lo otro”, por lo menos para el pensamiento occidental. Pero la desesperación, la ausencia de respuesta de las instituciones, lo comple-

jo que resulta dar cuenta de una identidad como la nacionalidad, nos acerca a este relato. En este caso, la identidad sería la idea que se hacen los miembros de una comunidad sobre lo que constituye la “identidad” de esa comunidad.

Hemos padecido situaciones similares aún cargando a cuestas un documento de identidad, ese que sirve para que siempre, en cualquier circunstancia, quien lo requiera pueda saber quienes somos, nuestro nombre, fecha y lugar de nacimiento, esta identidad que se traduce es un número sin el cual no podemos ejercer nuestros derechos de ciudadanos.

Cuando atravesamos las fronteras, debemos llevar nuestro pasaporte como símbolo de identidad, resumida en un pequeño libro de 10 x 12 cms. Poco importa que la foto

no tenga nada que ver con el original. Es así como también cargamos a cuestas ser ciudadanos de primer, segundo o tercer nivel en el ordenamiento global. Aquellos que de alguna manera al interior de esos trazados (en muchos casos simplemente imaginarios) que constituyen países, tenemos acceso a esos preciados documentos que dan garantía de nuestra existencia. Privilegio del que no gozó Mow be’.

Pero si la identidad es porosa, ni hablar de los muros y de las vallas en las fronteras. No existe muro en el mundo sobre la que algunos no hallan encontrado un poro, una pequeña grieta, una hendidura en donde rasgar una gran herida para cumplir con un sueño.

A la vez que sabemos del suicidio de Mow be’ somos partícipes del anuncio del muro que se erigirá en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, en un intento tan cruel como vano por trazar límites entre los únicos habitantes del continente que se autodenominan Americanos y el resto de América (Latina, por supuesto). Curiosamente, frente a las amenazas que no identifican fronteras como el calentamiento global, la escasez de agua, la contaminación, las grandes voces nacionales no se suman, como negando la posibilidad de una identidad humana, más allá de condicionamientos y verdades culturales. La identidad actual se construye en la tensión entre lo más puramente local (la familia, el barrio) y lo aparentemente universal. Lo diferente atrae el miedo, la sensación de inseguridad y la desconfianza, pero también la curiosidad.

Es así como dentro de este rompecabezas, además de pararnos frente al otro con nuestra identidad, ya no es suficiente decir, por ejemplo: Me llamo Luz, mujer, tengo 40 años, artista, colombiana, sino que en ocasiones, parece que debería agregar, no soy narcotraficante, no soy una mala persona y no soy sospechosa, así mi documento de identidad despierte todas las sospechas cuando atravieso las fronteras de mi país, donde a veces vivo con mis casi iguales.

Desde siempre me ven del lado de los “otros”, los que “no son yo” y “no soy ellos”.

Mientras más énfasis hacen los gobiernos en buscar alternativas que permitan la circulación de productos desde y hacia los países, más se restringe la circulación de ciudadanos en el mundo. Resultan ser privilegiados los ciudadanos que atravesamos fronteras, y cargamos con la extraña responsabilidad de hacer el mundo al hacer el camino. Atravesamos identidades con nuestra identidad, pegada a la espalda hacia el intento de incrustarnos como una pieza en otro rompecabezas. Y para encajar dentro del “otro” debemos, de nuevo, moldear esa membrana porosa.

Alargar las raíces o talvez podarlas para crear hogares. Como escribió Dipesh Chakrabarty. “Crear moradas (dwelling) en vez de buscar raíces. Las raíces son excluyentes y exclusivas. La morada, es el reconocimiento de que nunca habitamos un lugar que no haya sido habitado por otros.”

Believing in a destiny

“To have an identity is to believe in a destiny”.

Identity is a realm with no fixed borders. When we think of identity, we think of something in constant transformation.

Identity cannot remain unalterable; whenever it meets up with someone, with others, it is defied, affirmed, questioned, damaged. Whatever the case, it is spurred on. We cannot contemplate identity without bearing in mind some of its more visible variables: cultural identity, ethnic identity or gender identity, to name but a few.

Identity exists on the border of what belongs to the individual and what pertains to the group. It nests in the universe of what is private and comes into its own in the flow of what is public. In itself it is an exile, it does not belong specifically to any place.

Identity filters down into the most diverse notions and is taken as a constitutive element, knitting our lives with stitches that range from our country of birth; whether we were wished for as babies or not; whether we were given an education, or how, or by whom; whether we embrace a religion; whether the sex we desire is with our same gender…

These all end up as being the first visible bases of identity as such, in the contemporary western world. Identity is not just

the result of choice. Chaos and chance both play an important role that determine where we live, by necessity or choice, the people who surround us, by accident or because we have selected them. Both chosen and imposed identity is what shapes us and gives us concept and content.

The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy defines the term identity as “a set of features belonging to an individual or group that sets them apart from others”; “the awareness one has of being oneself and of being different from the rest”.

The Colombian historian and writer, Jorge Orlando Melo, asks, Is identity a set of cultural features that define a social group and that can be described by an external observer? In this case, does changing these features alter the identity, or is it maintained in spite of the fact that everything else changes?

Any definition of the word leads us down blind alleys.

We must almost inevitably agree that “identity”, in the current world, cannot be reduced to local traits, since it can still include endless outside elements.

The permanent construction of identity also entails thinking about what one is ”NOT”, and the current world 83

forms the scenario in which we have been closest to “the other”, “what one is not”. We are real-time spectators of wars, which strongly affect our identity. Increasingly more of us can surf the Internet and access all kinds of information, while there are still people with no roads or drinking water and who maintain their identity amidst poverty and global ignorance of their plight.

Mow be’ the chief of 200 Nukak Maku natives (a nomadic community that lives in the Colombian jungle), who were forced to move to San Jose del Guaviare, committed suicide by taking barbasco, a poisonous plant used by his community for hunting and fishing. This was how the “El Tiempo” newspaper reported the news: “According to Guber

Hernández, civil servant of the Office of Tribal Affairs, belonging to the Secretariat of the Guaviare Government, apparently depression, culture shock, envy and the apparent ‘fame’ Mow be’ gained caused him many problems. There are even versions of a supposed love affair he could not get out of. “He suddently became important because he spoke the Nukak language, as well as Spanish”, says Hernández. “This set him at odds with a culture that enveloped him and confused him; so much so that he came to be known as a person who lied and did not keep his word, since he rarely solved his people’s petitions”. “The bureaucratic maze to be tackled before receiving State aid and the unfulfilled promises became a true headache for him. He was a mere messenger,

but his people started to make him responsible. But he was not the only one to be dazzled by ‘civilization’. While some Nukaks wanted to return to their original habitat, which they abandoned over a year ago, others are fascinated by what they have learned in San Jose “.

The story of Mow be’ is both local and global. Local in that the uniqueness of belonging to a nomadic group living in the tropical rainforests and who are hunter-gatherers, is almost the paradigm of “the other”, at least from a western viewpoint. But the despair, the lack of response from the institutions, how complex it is to put forward an identity such as nationality all bring this story closer to home. In this case, identity would be the idea that the members of a communi-

ty form about what constitutes the “identity” of that community.

We have endured similar situations, always having to carry our ID cards with us, so that anyone, in any situation, can ask us to prove who we are, what our name is, where and when we were born. An identity which is just a number, but without which we are unable to exercise our rights as citizens.

When we cross borders, we must take our passport as a symbol of identity, summarized in a small book measuring 10 x 12 cms. Little does it matter that the photo bears little resemblance to the real-life face. In just the same way, we prove whether we are first-, second- or third-class citizens,

according to the global order of things. Those that, somehow, within those lines on a map (often simply imaginary) that form countries, have access to those valued documents that prove our existence. A privilege that Mow be’ did not enjoy’.

But if identity has no fixed borders, what can we say about the real-life border walls and fences? There is no wall in the world in which someone has found a pore, a small crack, a chink to dig a great wound in, so as to make a dream come true.

Just as we know of the suicide of Mow be’, we are also witnesses to the announcing of the wall that will be erected along the border between The United States and Mexico, in an attempt, equally cruel as pointless, to lay down a frontier between the only inhabitants of the continent that name themselves “American” and the rest of America (Latin-America, of course). Curiously enough, when dealing with threats that have nothing to do with borders, such as global warming, water shortage, pollution…, the major global players look the other way, as if denying the possibility of a human identity that extends beyond limitations and cultural truths. Present identity is built upon the tension between what is purely local (the family, the neighborhood) and what is seemingly universal. All that is different attracts fear, the sensation of insecurity and distrust, but also curiosity.

So it is that, within this puzzle, besides stopping before the other person with our own identity, it is no longer enough to say, for example: My name’s Luz, I’m a 40-yearold woman, an artist, from Colombia. You sometimes feel you have to attack: I’m not a drug dealer, I’m not bad, I’m not a suspect. But that is how I am often seen when I show my ID card on leaving my country, where I occasionally live with my almost equals. They’ve always seen me from the side of the “others”; those “who are not me” and “I am not them”.

The more emphasis governments place on finding ways to allow products to circulate freely among the nations,

the more restrictions they place on the free circulation of citizens around the world. Those of us who are able to cross borders are considered privileged and we are burdened with the strange responsibility of paving the way for others. We move through other identities with our own identity on our back, trying to fit into another puzzle. And, in order to fit into that “other” we must, again, relocate that porous membrane.

To spread the roots or perhaps prune them so as to create homes. Dipesh Chakrabarty wrote, “Create a home instead of searching for your roots. Your roots shut others out and belong only to you. A home is the recognition that we never live in a place whether others have never lived before”.

These were the skins to begin with.

Sin duda nos encontramos ante una palabra que trasciende la semántica, pues sus definiciones se refieren a la conciencia de ser uno mismo... Y una se pregunta ¿cómo se construye la identidad?.

No voy a teorizar sobre esta cuestión, puesto que no soy ninguna experta en este campo. Me limitaré a reflexionar sobre mi propia vivencia, de cómo creo que me ha enriquecido la experiencia de vivir los últimos ocho años de mi vida en seis países diferentes e intentaré, a través de estas líneas, descifrar cómo ello me ha influido en la construcción de mi identidad. Junto a ello, haré una referencia muy breve a algunos autores que me han aportado pautas para ir intuyendo algunas claves.

C.H Cooley aduce que en el proceso de configuración del yo el individuo necesita de la sociedad para poder llegar a ser persona. La constitución del yo para Cooley se realiza a partir de la interacción con los demás, y la denomina el “yo espejo”. Por su parte, G. H. Mead se refiere al self (la persona) como la capacidad de considerarse a uno mismo tanto como sujeto como objeto que se desarrolla a través de las ex-

periencias sociales del individuo dentro del proceso social.

Según este autor, para el desarrollo del self es necesaria la reflexión o la capacidad de ponernos inconscientemente en el lugar de otros y actuar como lo harían ellos.

Este “yo espejo”, creo que es fundamental para llegar al encuentro de identidad, que se va construyendo desde el momento que uno nace en un ámbito social determinado. El yo no es sino el espejo en que se reflejan los otros con quienes un individuo convive.

El desarraigo de la tierra, la emoción que produce estar lejos de nuestra cultura, genera un efecto intenso de redescubrimiento de las propias raíces. Es entonces cuando más se sienten en la sangre. El distanciamiento de lo nuestro produce un sentimiento de pérdida, una merma de nuestros referentes, que conlleva un cuestionamiento sobre nuestra identidad ubicua. Esto puede conllevar una crisis interna, muy necesaria en algunos casos para encontrarse más a uno mismo.

Mirarse en el espejo de los ojos del otro cuestionando las raíces de uno mismo, conviviendo con el choque cultural, con las distintas costumbres y formas de vida, genera preguntas antes no cuestionadas que crean identidad, configuran rostro.

Sin embargo, vivimos en un mundo globalizado donde difícilmente se practica la alteridad, muy lejos de hablar un mismo idioma. Tener la oportunidad de vivir entre varios países durante un tiempo me ha llevado a reflexionar en pro111

fundidad acerca de la paradójica falta de comunicación y pérdida referencial de valores que está aconteciendo en la llamada era de la información.

Esa búsqueda de identidad nuestra es una constante pregunta donde echamos mano de nuestras costumbres, cultura, recuerdos, imágenes, gustos, relaciones personales y momentos de encuentro con nosotros mismos para ir encajando en el tiempo piezas de un puzzle que probablemente nunca acabemos definitivamente. Un puzzle que puede ser diferente desde la mirada del otro u otros, puesto que al tener matices tan diversos no tiene por qué confirmarse siempre la identidad de un individuo tal y como él la cree construida.

Encontrar identidad en esta nueva Torre de Babel se hace difícil, puesto que para configurar ese “yo” necesitamos, además de tiempo y reflexión personal, reconocer la diferencia del “otro”, con sus matices y contrastes y buscar un lenguaje común de un marco social comunicativo. Quizás construir identidad sea afianzar las bases que configuren una torre sólida bien cimentada, donde quepa lugar para el reconocimiento de uno mismo y del otro, donde la diferencia sea un elemento de unión y el lenguaje común del entendimiento no sea una utopía.

Ubiquitous identity in the Tower of Bedlam

The dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy defines the term identity as “a set of features own an individual or group that sets them apart from others”; “the awareness one has of being oneself and of being different from the rest”; and “the fact of being who or what a person or thing is”. Undoubtedly, we are before a word that goes beyond semantics, since its definitions refer to the consciousness of being oneself... And we can ask ourselves, how is identity constructed?.

I am not about to give lessons on this question, since I am no expert in this field. I will limit myself to reflect upon my own experience, of how I believe that having lived the past eight years of my life in six different countries has been most positive for me, personally, and I will try, through these words, to decipher how this has influenced me in constructing my own identity. In addition, I will very briefly refer to some of the authors who have helped show me the way to intuit certain keys.

C.H. Cooley maintains that, in the process of defining oneself, the individual needs society in order to be able to become a person. According to Cooley, self-definition occurs through interaction with others, and he names it “selfmirror”.

G.H. Mead refers to the self (the person) as the ability to consider oneself both as the subject and object, developing thanks to the social experiences of the individual within the social process. According to this author, to develop the self,

we need to be able to reflect, or be able to put ourselves unconsciously in the place of others and to act as they would.

This “selfmirror”, I believe, is fundamental to finding one’s identity, which is gradually built up from the moment one is born in a certain social environment. is the self is simply the mirror in which are reflected those an individual coexists with.

Being far from one’s homeland, the emotion caused by being far from one’s culture, bring about a strong effect of rediscovering one’s own roots. This is when we most feel it in our veins. Being separated from what we have always known produces a feeling of loss, a decrease in our points of reference, which bears with it a questioning of our ubiquitous identity. This can lead to an internal crisis, very necessary, in some cases, if one is to come even more in touch with oneself.

To look at oneself in the mirror through the eyes of another, questioning one’s own roots, coexisting with the cultural shock, with the different customs and forms of life, brings up questions never before posed, which create identity, shaping a face.

Nevertheless, we live in a global world where alterity is hard to come across, much less speaking the same language. Having had the chance to live in different countries over a period of time has led me to think hard about the parado121

xical lack of communication and referential loss of values that is happening in the so-called age of information.

This search for our identity is an eternal question in which we bring into play our customs, culture, memories, images, tastes, personal relations and moments of personal recollection, in order to fit into time the pieces of a puzzle that we will probably never finish. A puzzle that may be different depending on who is observing it, since the multiple nuances of each individual’s identity mean that it may not always correspond to how he or she believes it to be.

Discovering one’s identity in this new Tower of Babel is hard, since, to form that self, we need, apart from time and personal reflection, to recognize the difference of the “other”, with all its tones and contrasts, and to search for a common language within a social communicative frame. It may be that identity-building has to do with reinforcing the foundations of a well-constructed tower, where there is room for recognising both self and other, where difference is an element of union and the common language of understanding is not a utopia.

La partitura que aquí se reproduce es una adaptación y actualización de la Misa Ferialis, del siglo XVII que D. Ángel Peinado Peinado, maestro de capilla de la Catedral de Granada e integrante del Cabildo de la misma, desempolvó y me entregó, a su sobrino Stani Peinado Ferrer para que fuera el artífice de sus “variaciones”. Esta pieza musical es reflejo de dos aspectos vitales del concepto de “identidad”: el de recu-

peración y adaptación. Adaptación desde la comprensión profunda de un pasado no olvidado, sino querido; que se robustece y rejuvenece hoy en día al tomar nuevas formas en manos del vital y dinámico presente.

Variations Misa Ferialis

The score that here is reproduced is an adaptation and update of the Mass Ferialis, of the XVIIth century that D. Ángel Peinado Peinado, “Maestro de Capilla” of the Cathedral of Granada and member of the Chapter of the same one, dusted and it gave to me, his nephew Stanis Peinado Ferrer so that I was the creator of its “variations”. This musical piece is reflected of two vital aspects of the concept of “identity”:

that of recovery and of adjustment. Adaptation from the deep comprehension of a not forgotten, but dear past; that it strengths and rejuvenates nowadays on taking new forms in hands of the vital and dynamical present.
