KING STREET CORRIDOR REDEVELOPMENT STUDY

CDA

AXON CONCEPT

RENDERED VIEW FROM BRIDGE

As an architectural firm, CDA shares Three Cord's genuine concern and social consciousness for the revitalization of urban neighborhoods and specifically the King Street Corridor along which New Hope Academy Charter School sits. CDA is working with Three Cord on a pro bono basis to prepare graphic materials that flesh out and support Three Cord's vision of redeveloping the King Street Corridor that spans from Logos Academy or the Codorus Creek at the east end to Lincoln Charter School at the west end. We understand that there are approximately 1500 children attending these three charter schools located within 6 blocks of each other on any given school day and that approximately 90% of the children walk to school. The design of the urban environment is just as important as considering the classroom environment. CDA is proposing streetscape improvements ranging from proper lighting to improve security to street furniture, identifying potential development opportunities based on properties ripe for upgrades, and generating a framework for approaches that will restore the vitality of West King Street. We are proposing making sustainable design strategies visible within the streetscape as an extension of the science classroom.

THREE CORD INC. COVER SHEET 7.29.2011 NFC

CDA agrees with Three Cord's assessment that an anchor building within the redevelopment is needed to achieve a critical mass and generate significant momentum to transform the neighborhood. CDA is exploring the possibility of a mixed-use anchor building at the east end of the corridor near the Codorus Creek. Possible uses being considered are: a movie theatre, offices and classrooms for HACC York, a children’s museum, a science center, an art gallery, a café, a restaurant, a micro-bank, elementary charter school and community outreach spaces. It is our sense that the building should be flexible enough for the building’s program to evolve as the needs of the community change and that the building should be perceived as a physical positive sign of respect for the surrounding community.
