Indigenista no militante, bohemio y apasionado por el arte es acogido por el pueblo indígena como un hermano mas, pero también pertenece al Perú mestizo, a esa sociedad criolla de Cuzco que viste con la moda europea y que lo bajaron de las alturas indias al propio piso españolizado y colonizado.

Obreros, curas, militares, profesores e intelectuales mezclados con mujeres y hombres de las mas alturas quechuas pasaron por el estudio, el cual siempre estaba abierto y su galería, en su primer piso, siempre gratuita.

Un trabajo en estudio que haría llevarlo hasta el mismo MOMA de Nueva Jork.

Chambi concurre afortunadamente con varias circunstancias históricas, la llegada tardía de la revolución industrial a los Andes; el relativo auge económico local, motivado principalmente por el aumento del comercio, las mejoras de la comunicación y los servicios, y el masivo interés turístico por el Cuzco; y la emergencia de programas sociales y políticos pro-indígenas surgidos desde los centros urbanos y desde los movimientos artístico-literarios.

Matrín es el primero que mira a su gente con ojos descolonizados, con el verdadero sentimiento inca, crudo y siencero. Sus retratos describen al “yo” indigena y al “nosotros” occidental con el mismo trato, bajo la misma luz.
