We regret to inform you the passing away of our dear founder’s beloved wife, Mrs. Lalitha Chandrasekhar whose demise had saddened all achievements of this quarter.

In July, the Rotary Club Bangalore Midtown inaugurated the Rotary Midtown Mananadi Outreach Clinic which will reach a large number of people in need of services.

Professional development was enhanced with the 2-day, RCI-CRE AUDISHCON 2019 “Fitting and Outcome Measures of Hearing Instruments: Current Trends” and the 3-day RCI-CRE National Seminar on “Advances in Early Intervention Strategies in Habilitation for Children with Hearing Impairment” organized by the Dept. of Hearing studies and the 2-day Quest Teachers Training Workshop on Skills for Adolescence organized for teachers of Sunaad School.

Students from the “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head & Neck Cancer Treatment” and “CI Technology & Re/Habilitation” fellowship programmes successfully began and completed the 3-month programmes this quarter.

• Initiate preventive and pre-emptive action to avoid conditions leading to disabilities

The Ethical Committee meeting under chairperson Dr. Indira Jai Prakash, the Research Technical Committee (RTC) members meeting under chairperson, Dr. Shivashankar, and the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting under chairperson Dr. Jai Prakash were held.

• Develop programmes in a whole life perspective and reduce the burden of family members of people with communication disorders

We have 11 new students enrolled into M.Sc. (Speech Language Pathology), 10 into M.Sc. (Audiology), and 5 into the D.Ed. Special Education courses this academic year.

We proudly felicitated our dedicated teachers on the occasion of Teachers’ Day with Shri K.G. Subarama Setty, Hon. Treasurer, RV Trust, Bangalore as the Chief Guest of the event.

Awards & Accolades

On 17 July, 2019, Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired was honoured for “Promising Special Education Program at the Eldrok India K-12 Summit”.

Ms. Padmaprabha A.P., Headmistress of Sunaad School, was conferred the “Nation Builder Award” on the occasion of Teachers Day Celebration, on 5th September, 2019. The award was presented by the Rotary Bangalore South, in association with Inner Wheel Club of Bangalore South in recognition of her exemplary service as an educator and for ‘Shaping the minds and lines of students by inculcating values and skills in them thus contributing to the future of a vibrant India.

Professional Development AUDISHCON 2019 “Fitting and Outcome Measures of Hearing Instruments: Current Trends”

The Department of Hearing Studies in collaboration with PHONAK conducted their Annual Conference - “AUDISHCON 2019” titled “Fitting and Outcome Measures of Hearing Instruments: Current Trends”, a 2-day CRE seminar, which was held on 2nd and 3rd of August 2019.

220 delegates attended the seminar; these included graduate and postgraduate students from Dr. S.R.C.ISH and other Sl. Name & Designation No.

colleges as well, and approximately 87 professionals from places such as Kerala, Hubli, Manipal, Chennai, Kolar, and Bangalore. For the Inauguration, Dr. Kalyani Mandke, the Guest of Honour delivered the Keynote Address on “A Focus on Counselling”. Technical Know-How of Hearing Aids Programming

The delegates were offered an opportunity to enhance their knowledge on the factors to be considered before fitting a hearing aid and the different methods that can assure that the outcome is as expected. Fitting softwares of different companies and prescriptive formulas were discussed. Assistive devices and their benefits if used along with hearing aids were also covered.

Dr. Hariprakash demonstrated on the use of objective outcome measure – Aided LLR which was live streamed from the Audio lab to the auditorium and proved to be very educational. In addition, Demo stations on Real Ear Measurements, Troubleshooting of Hearing Aids, and Klangfinder, the new technology by PHONAK gave much needed hands-on training to the delegates.

This Conference equipped all the delegates with lot of practical experience to fit hearing aids and to measure their outcome through proven methods.

Live demonstration of Aided LLR by Dr. Hariprakash

National Seminar on “Advances in Early Intervention Strategies in Habilitation for Children with Hearing Impairment” Department of Hearing Studies conducted a 3-day CRE National Seminar “Advances in Early Intervention Strategies in Habilitation for Children with Hearing Impairment” from the 5th to 7th of September 2019 was conducted successfully.

145 delegates attended the seminar; these included graduate and postgraduate students Dr. S.R.C.ISH and other colleges, and about 79 professionals from different parts of the country like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Gujarat, and countries like Malaysia and Bangladesh. Shri K.G. Subarama Setty, Hon. Treasurer, RV Trust, Banglore was the Chief Guest.

Dr. Suni Mathews, the Guest of Honour delivered the Keynote Address on “Importance of Early Identification and Intervention for Children with Hearing Impairment”.

The event reflected the need for early identification and intervention of children with hearing impairment. Topics covered a wide range of issues related to early intervention including why it is needed, how early it should be provided, what the steps are taken in different parts of the country to provide early identification and intervention, and how advances in technology are aiding the same. The topics also covered the challenges faced and the outcomes of different early intervention programmes. The seminar concluded with demonstrations of the curriculum followed in different rehabilitation centers for children with Hearing Impairment and video demonstrations of music therapy and auditory verbal therapy.

The feedback of students and delegates suggested that the National Seminar was very informative. All the student and delegates benefited from the practical knowledge of the speakers.

Professional Development Staff Enrichment Programmes

On 7-8-2019, Dr. N. Shivashankar (Clinical Director, Dr. S.R.C.ISH) gave his insight on report writing skills to the staff of the Department of Speech Language Studies. The need of compiling the test results of different departments to have a holistic approach to treatment was discussed.

On 18-07-2019, the faculty of the Dept. of Speech Language Studies was oriented regarding use of Vital Stim for dysphagia therapy. Demonstrations included placement of electrodes and stimulation to be given and the different programmes available on the device.

Fellowship Programme Updates

“Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment” The second batch of fellowship programme on “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment” started on August 14th, 2019. 5 professionals have joined this batch. For the duration of a month, they were prepared with necessary medical information by various experts. Currently they are attending postings in Kidwai Cancer Institute where they are given the opportunity to observe various surgeries related to head and neck cancer and to learn speech and swallowing assessment and rehabilitation practically.

Professional Development Talks held at the Institute

On 23rd July, 2019, a talk on “Zero Waste Cities” was given by Ms. Padma Arun from Stonesoup Trust to students and staff of the institute. She emphasized the importance of doing away with single-use plastics/other items and management of wet waste at the source. It was enlightening and motivating to those who attended.

On 30th July 2019, Dr. Krishna Y., addressed faculty of Dr. S.R.C.ISH via Skype. He shared his knowledge and experience on “Teaching Methods”.

Ms. Rajeshwari from The Wishing Tree addressed students on “Self Leadership” on 27th August, 2019. It was an interactive and activity-filled session.

On 24th September, 2019, Mr. Alwyn Sebastian from Bay (an organisation that works closely with schools in Bangalore to address issues of sexual abuse) delivered a lecture on “Child Sexual Abuse” and shared information on legislation regarding the same with staff and students of the institute.

Extension Services

The Department of Hearing Studies extended their services to Columbia Asia Hospital, Yeshwantpur on 19th September 2019 by provision of equipment and manpower for Electrical Auditory Brainstem Response (EABR) in assisting cochlear implant surgery. EABR was crucial in deciding whether a Cochlear Implant or an Auditory Brainstem Implant was required in a patient.

Events Rotary Midtown Manandi Outreach Clinic

The Rotary Club Bangalore Midtown inaugurated the Rotary Midtown Manandi Outreach Clinic on 6th July 2019.

Donations of Rotary Bangalore Midtown were instrumental in creating a mobile clinic with sophisticated equipment for hearing testing. The event was presided over by Rtn. Dr. Sameer Hariani (Dist. Governor, RI Dist. 3190) in the presence of PDG Nagesh, RI Dist. 3190, Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, and PP Rtn. Sathish Manandi, Rotary Midtown President Rtn. Dr. Kshama Bhatia, Rtn. Abdul G. Sait, Hon. The management of the Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust expressed their gratitude to teachers of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired and of the Dr. S.R.C. Institute of Speech and Hearing by honouring them on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on September 5th, 2019. Shri K.G. Subarama Setty, Hon. Updates from B.N. Gupta Research Centre Upcoming Journal

The upcoming journal titled “Journal of Hearing, Language and Speech” has been registered online. The verification of documents by the Registrar of Newspapers for India is under process.

Academic Audit

An “Academic Audit” for all the teaching faculty of the Institute on 12th September, 2019. Dr. Roopa Nagarajan from Sri Ramachandra Medical University and Dr. Jayashree Bhat from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore were invited as the evaluators. The faculty was provided a self evaluation format to evaluate themselves ahead of the evaluation on 12th September. The teams consisting of one internal and one external evaluator conducted evaluation of the bachelors and masters teaching faculty in college and submitted their evaluation report to the institute. They also provided individual feedback to the faculty.

Ethical Committee Meeting

The Ethical Committee (EC) members under chair- person Dr. Indira Jai Prakash, an eminent retired Psychologist from Bangalore University, met on 13th September 2019 for evaluating the ethical considerations for the student dissertations and projects from B.N.Gupta Research centre. All the proposed projects for submission from BNGRC and upcoming student dissertations for this academic year were presented in front of the committee for ethical clearance and their suggestions were incorporated.

Research Technical Committee Meeting

The Research Technical Committee (RTC) members under chairperson, Dr. Shivashankar met on 14th, September 2019 to evaluate the new proposals for projects of B.N.Gupta Research Centre and provide suggestions. The recommendations given by the committee will be considered before sending the proposals for funding agencies. An update about the proposals sent the previous year was provided by the faculty of the department.

Research Advisory Committee Meeting

The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) meeting under chairperson Dr. Jai Prakash was held on 23rd September 2019 in order to discuss the present status of BNGRC and suggest future plans of action. The committee was presented the annual report and the CEO, in-charge of the department explained the ongoing activities and future plans of the centre.

Writers’ Lab

B.N.Gupta Research centre formulated and initiated the scientific writing program titled ‘Writers’ lab’ for the MSc students. The programme consists of 05 modules of which the first module is already on the roll. B.N.Gupta Research centre conducts these practical and interactive sessions in order to motivate, encourage and guide the students on scientific writing.

On 20th July, 10 students of Sunaad School participated in the Inter-school painting competition organized by Karnataka State council for Child Welfare, Bangalore.

An inter-house “WEALTH OUT OF WASTE� competition was held on 24th August, 2019 and all the students from pre-school to Std. X participated and displayed their artwork that they had created out of waste. Their work was judged and 1st and 2nd prizes were awarded.

On September 1st, 2019, S.Y.A Ladies Wing organized a walkathon to create awareness about early intervention for Children with Hearing impairment at Cubbon Park; a few children from Sunaad School took part in the event

Updates from Sunaad School Celebrations

Suresh of class 7 is oblivious to the world around him as he single-mindedly kneads a mass of clay with his fingers trying to create the perfect elephant head. A few hours later, finally satisfied with his outcome he looks up with pride and communicates “At first, I thought it was impossible for me to make an entire Ganesha Idol without help. Now that I’ve finished, it looks easy and fun.”

This year, on 31st August, 2019 Sunaad School installed the idol created by Suresh (a child with hearing impairment).

The idol was decorated by the students, with the help of teachers. The pious festival of “Ganesh Chaturthi” was celebrated with zeal; the significance of the festival was explained to the students and eco-friendly ways of celebrating the festival were emphasized. The programme ended with an aarti recital and chants.

On August 15th, Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervor by staff and students of Sunaad School.

As has been the practice over the years, our partners, the Lion’s Club of Bangalore East participate with pride along with the school children. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust welcomed the gathering and gave the Presidential address. Lion V. Ramesh, President of Bangalore East Lions Club, as a Chief Guest, hoisted the National Flag. The National Anthem was followed by a speech by the Chief Guest and cultural programme. Prizes for children’s academic and co-curricular accomplishments were distributed by the chief guest, Lion V. Ramesh, Chairman, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, and Lion V.S. Shanthavadhan, Hon. Treasurer of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust. The day ended with the vote of thanks and distribution of sweets.

Updates from Sign Language Unit JULY 2019

• Jyothi Nivas College started the sign language course with the Sign Language Unit for the 5th consecutive year.

• The Nitte Education Trust, Mangalore invited the Sign Language Unit to conduct a one-day Indian Sign Language workshop for the Speech and Hearing undergraduates (BASLP). The enthusiastic participation of the college students in learning and participating in the activities was very inspiring.

• Diploma (Special Education) students of Dr. S.R.C.ISH also continued their training in ISL. • 2 students joined the grade I, ISL (Indian Sign Language) course.

AUGUST 2019

• A student of an international school signed up for the Functional sign language course.

• Two students who had earlier done the Functional sign language course signed up for Grade I to continue their learning.

• Training of JyothiNivas students, and Diploma (Special Education) students continued, • Training of undergraduate students (1st semester) of Dr. S.R.C.ISH in ISL began.

SEPTEMBER 2019

• Classes for Jyothi Nivas College were completed.

• 3 teachers from the Fourth Wave Foundation were trained in functional sign language. This was done through online classes for teachers from Koppal district. The teachers actively participated with quick learning and adequate practice.

• Training of undergraduate students (1st semester) and Diploma (Special Education) of Dr. S.R.C.ISH in ISL continued.

Celebrations

The Mothers Training Center celebrated Varamahalakshmi festival on 8th August 2019. It is believed that worshiping Goddess Varamahalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi – the eight goddesses of Wealth, Earth, Learning, Love, Fame, Peace, Pleasure and strength. Mrs Bhuvaneshwari from BNGRC participated in the programme and explained the significance of the festival.

Rakshabandhan festival was celebrated on 16th August 2019 with great ardour and gaiety. The celebration began with children coming dressed in their colorful best for rakhi tying. The sight of little kids in their traditional attire was one to behold. The highlight of the program was the tying of “rakhis” by Girls to Boys. The program concluded with sweets distribution.

Independence Day was celebrated with patriotic fervor on 15th August 2019 on the school premises.

Janmashtami, which marks the birth of Lord Krishna was celebrated with great pomp and festivity. Tiny- tots of MTC dressed as Radha - Krishna gave a traditional touch to the entire celebration. Children participated in the fancy dress competition. Dr. Rashmi J Bhat and Mrs. Manasa gave away the prizes to the winners.

On 30th August 2019, the pious festival “Ganesh Chaturthi” the symbol of wisdom and remover of obstacles was celebrated. The celebration began with Ganesh Vandana followed by Pooja, Pooja was attended by all staff.

On 11th September 2019, Onam was celebrated with festive ambience. The center was decorated with thorana and banana shoots depiciting the Pooja, and pookalam spread out on the floor. Significance of the festival was explained to children and sweets were distributed.

SASH Corner The students of Dr. S.R.C.ISH have had an amazing past few months, starting off the academic year of 2019-20 with a blast.

Ganesh Chaturthi was the first event conducted on the 2nd , 3rd and 4th of September, 2019 with puja on all the three days. Ganesh festival was celebrated with water games, dances and the visarjan on the last day of the celebrations.

“Teachers are the lamps of the nation”. To thank our beloved teachers, we had conducted teachers’ day celebrations on 12th September, 2019. We honoured our dear teachers and conducted some fun games for them to participate in. We also presented a video to express our sincere gratitude and gifted a token of our gratitude to all of the teachers.

The most recent celebration was “Onam” on 19th September, 2019. The celebration started with the making of pookalam and programs like dances and the traditional Onam dance of thiruvathira. To sweeten the event payasam was given to all and the day ended with tug-owar competition.

Ms. Sarah Spencer won first place for solo singing in Cresindo 2k19, an inter-college competition held at Sindhi College. We are proud of her achievements.

A flood relief campaign was organised by SASH to offer a helping hand to the flood survivors of Karnataka and Kerala.

Other Student News Field Visit

Students of 3rd B.Sc. Speech Language Pathology and Audiology visited Spastic Society of Karnataka and received exposure assistive equipments, vocational training, and other facilities available to persons with disabilities.

For much needed break from all things work and study related, a quiz was organized for students on general topics related to politics, sport, entertainment, etc on 26th September 2019. Students participated enthusiastically and were filled with energy to continue the day.

National Service Scheme

NSS Volunteers of Dr. S.R.C.ISH college visited the Home for the Aged at Richmond town Bangalore, on 27th July, 2019. Volunteers actively participated in gardening, cleaning the premises, helping the aged inmates in cutting vegetables and spending time with them.

NSS volunteers participated in HEAR- A- THON (Lend –an-ear), 1km run organized by SINDHI YOUTH ASSOCIATION LADIES WING (SYAO) at Cubbon Park on 1st September 2019. The aim was to create awareness about hearing impairment, early detection, and total rehabilitation.

NSS Volunteers cleaned the premises of Heller Keller Integrated School, which has been adopted by the Institute on at Tumkur on 24th August 2019 NSS (National Service Scheme) Day, was celebrated on 24th September, as SWACHH BHARAT, where in volunteers from the NSS unit of the college, together with their support staff cleaned the classrooms, library and therapy rooms. The support staff was appreciated for their dedicated hard work in keeping the Institute clean .Each staff was offered a rose and appreciation was given by the Principal Ms. Rashmi Bhat, along with the NSS officer, and Vice Principal Ms. Anita Reddy.

We are saddened by the demise of Mrs. Lalitha Chandrasekhar on 21-09-2019 wife of Late Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar. She was the strength and backbone of the Dr.SRC. May her soul rest in peace.

The loss of Mrs. Lalitha Chandrasekhar will be felt by all who knew her. A slim, slightly bent figure in her last years, she graced every function in the institute be it Independence Day celebrations at Sunaad school or the institute day.

Mrs. Chandrasekhar was always warm and smiling with never a word out of place. She recognised everyone and greeted them all with genuine pleasure on all her visit. A disciplined lady, she was the backbone of Dr. Chandrasekhar in his pet PROJECT- the institute. The warmth to the staff extended to providing “tindis” when we went for overnight camps so that there was a ‘picnicy’ feel to these camps. If by chance we went to Dr. SRC’s house around the time of Gouri pooja or Varamahalakshmi, we returned with a big steel box filled with chakuli, kodubale and kari kadabu.

Her passing has brought an end to an era.

Other News Rajendraa’s journey with disability started in 1978 and he carries over 3 decades of experience with disability issues. He has actively engaged all through his life with various national and Rajendraa K. international development and New Member disability agencies; Community Advisory Board Based Organisations, People’s and mass-based Organisations; Federations of disabled people and Human rights movements.

more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and US, with huge learnings from people with disabilities in cross-cultural situations.

He has wide and diverse experience gained during his work with people affected by disasters and conflict situations such as Tsunami in India and Sri Lanka, earth quake in Pakistan, floods in Bangladesh, civil war in Sri Lanka and other crucial conditions. He has travelled to

Rajendraa’s creative side has music, dance, miming and acting, which are his pass-time passions.

He has completed his Masters in sociology [MASociology] and Business Administration [MBA] and is pursuing doctoral research in disability.

PRA, Mentoring Disabled youth, Organizational Change and capacity building are his passions. He has lived with visually impaired and deaf youth all his life and has an adopted son with hearing impairment.

Currently he heads an international consulting organisation called “Innovative Development Transformations”.

Little deeds of kindness, little acts of love, make our earth Eden, like the Heaven above

If you observe happenings at the cash counter of Dr. S.R.C. ISH, you will notice children excitedly running towards it and leaving with smiles on their faces. The reason for their smile is the little sweet in their hand that they receive from Mr. Shanmugam, Dr. S.R.C.ISH employee, who mans the cash counter. Mr. Shanmugam, who seems to be the resident ‘Santa Claus’ of Dr. S.R.C.ISH has been silently giving sweets to children coming to the institute for quite a while. This simple gesture that was bringing joy to so many little children was noticed by a parent of a child who visited our institute. For then on, this parent, Mr. A. Rehman, decided to share in spreading this joy and began contributing jars of sweets for Mr. Shanmugam to distribute. And so the kindness flows on …we applaud the silent, selfless acts that help make the Dr. S.R.C.ISH world a little better!

Clinical Facilities Department of Hearing Studies Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies.

Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level.

Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively.

Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service.

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking.

Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs.

Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life.

Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.

Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth.

Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent.

Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing.

Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.
