Chairman’ s Note Greetings to all!

Vision

A world without activity limitation for persons with communication disorders.

This has been another eventful quarter for us at Dr. S.R.C.ISH. Our endeavours to provide updated knowledge to professionals and students have not been in vain! The Dept. of Speech Language Studies successfully conducted a 3-day National Seminar on Head and Neck Cancer: Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation. The first batch of 9 students of the fellowship in “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment” successfully completed the programme. The 2nd batch due to start shortly and we have also begun a fellowship in “CI Technology & Re/Habilitation”.

The Rehabilitation Council of India conducted inspections of 3 different courses this quarter and we await favourable outcomes of the inspections.

We have celebrated the graduation of 87 students of different courses and welcomed 44 new students in to the BASLP course.

In our continued attempts to serve society, we went out on the streets and conducted a walkathon titled “Vidyuth” to raise awareness about hearing problems.

We deeply mourn the loss of one of our long-serving employees, Mr. Nanda Kumar. May his soul rest in peace.

Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh was conferred the Life Time Achievement Award by the Genius Book and Wonder Book of Records in April 2019.

Professional Development National Seminar on Head & Neck Cancer: Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation The Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRCISH conducted 3 day-National Seminar on Head & Neck Cancer: Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation from 2nd to 4th May 2019. The event was inaugurated by management committee members, Chief Guest, Dr. Ramachandra, Director, Kidwai Cancer Institute, and Guest of Honour, Prof. R. Rangasayee. Following the customary lighting-of-the-lamp, the seminar was introduced by the Organizing Secretary, Dr. B.S. Premalatha (Professor, Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRCISH). The Chief Guest and Guest of Honour were then honoured by the management committee members.

The first 4 scientific sessions were chaired by Dr. B.S. Premalatha and last two scientific sessions were chaired

by Dr. Anita Reddy (Professor & Head, Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. SRCISH). A very simplified overview on various surgical procedures related to head neck cancer was magnificently delivered by Dr. A.M. 04

Shenoy (Professor, Head and Neck Surgeon, Bangalore), Dr. Krishnappa (Professor), Dr. Siddappa (Associate Professor), Dr. Purushotham Chawan (Associate Professor) and Dr. Sowjanya (MCH Student) from Department of Head and Neck Surgical Oncology, Kidwai Cancer Institute, Bangalore. Dr. Janet (Ex-Medico Social Welfare Officer) from the same institute gave an insight into the psychosocial aspects of patients with cancer. Over the next two days, we gained remarkable inputs from the various scientific sessions including “Demonstration of Speech and Swallowing (both subjective and objective) assessment on patients with head and neck cancer, Speech rehabilitation following total Laryngectomy, TEP’s and Troubleshooting of alaryngeal speech. These topics were addressed by Ms. Smita Caren Mathias (Speech & Swallowing Specialist, Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Research Hospital, Bangalore), Ms. Mereen Rose Babu (Asst. All delegates got an opportunity to interact with patients with different modes of alaryngeal speech.

Dr. Pradeep Kumar (MBBS, MS, DLO, DNB, Medical Director at “Meenakshi ENT Speciality Centre, Bangalore gave a live demonstration of FEES (Fibre optic Endoscopic

Swallow Evaluation). A few of the delegates got an opportunity to be subjects and had hands on training with FEES under his supervision. This seminar also had oral case presentations by the 9 fellows of “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment”; these focused on speech and swallowing difficulties / speech rehabilitation for patients with head and neck cancer.

Fellowship Programmes The Department of Speech and Language Studies, Dr. SRCISH initiated a fellowship programme in “Speech and Swallowing Rehabilitation following Head and Neck Cancer Treatment” on 11th of March, 2019 for the duration of 3 months. All 9 speech language pathologists including Ms. Kausalya Sahani, Clinical Supervisor, Dept. of Speech Language Studies, and Mr. Suman, Asst.

Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies successfully completed their fellowship programme and received their certificates of specialization on 24-06-2019.

Events and Celebrations “Vidyuth”

A walkathon titled “Vidyuth” in support of raising awareness on Safer Listening Levels was organised by Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing sponsored by Parents’ Association of Deaf Children, Mysuru.

Around 50-60 participants including the Principal, the Vice principal, faculty members and students of Dr. SRCISH took part in the walkathon. The walkathon began at 8am from Jalvayuvihar signal, Kammanahalli and wound its way through Kammanahalli main road and culminated at Dr.SRCISH. During the course, students distributed pamphlets to the shops and general public, containing tips on Safer Listening Levels and hazardous effects of Recreational Hearing loss.

Events and Celebrations Free Voice Camp

For the occasion of World Voice Day, the Dept. of Speech Language Studies held a free voice screening camp for all interested from the 1st to 10th April 2019. Approximately 20 individuals availed of this service.

International Yoga Day

International Yoga Day was celebrated on the 21st of June, 2019. Students of Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired, students from the ASD and NIOS schools, and the rest of the institute as well celebrated this day by trying out some yoga themselves. Ms. Mageetha led staff and students on this day.

News from College Office The Rehabilitation Council of India conducted 3 inspections at Dr. SRCISH this quarter.

• The RCI Inspection for the Masters Programmes conducted at the Institute was conducted on 31st May 2019 by Dr. T. Dattatreya, Director, NITTE Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mangalore, and Dr. Prakash Boominathan, Professor and H.O.D., Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai. We are pleased to report that we have received recognition for the Masters in Audiology and Masters in Speech Language Pathology Courses for the academic years of 2019-20 and 2020-21.

• The RCI Inspection for the Diploma in Special Education (Hearing Impairment) was conducted on 7th June, 2019 by Dr. Raju Arakh, Lecturer, Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Speech and Hearing Handicapped (AYJNISHD), Mumbai and Ms. Sreedevi, Lecturer, AYJNISHD, Secunderabad.

• The RCI Inspection for the Post Graduate Diploma Course in Auditory Verbal Therapy was conducted on 21st June, 2019 by Dr. Varsha Ghatoo, Faculty, Mumbai and Mr. R. Ranjith of the MERF Institute of Speech and Hearing, Chennai.

News from College Office Graduation Day

The “Graduation Day� ceremony for the outgoing batches of 2018-19 was conducted on 29th April 2019. The ceremony was presided over by Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust. Dr. S.A. Kori, Executive Director and Member Secretary, Karnataka State Higher Education Council was the Chief Guest and Mr. Aravind R. Chengeri, Syndicate Member, Bangalore North University was the Guest of Honour. 38 BASLP students, 19 MASLP students, 11 MSc (SLP) students, 10 MSc (Audiology), and 9 D.S.E. (H.I.) students graduated this year. Graduating students received their scrolls and plaques of appreciation and recited the professional oath. Additionally, merit awards were distributed to students of each batch who had secured the highest scores. This year, we also recognized Ms. Sandra Mathew, from the graduating BASLP batch for her cent percent attendance during her entire BASLP course.

News from College Office Induction Ceremony

An induction Ceremony was conducted on 24th June, 2019 for students of the Bachelor of Audiology and Speech Language Pathology Course. The ceremony was presided over by Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh and Dr. N.P. Nataraja, Director, JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore was the Chief Guest. The 44 available seats were filled by 18 students from Karnataka, 18 from Kerala, 2 from Tamil Nadu, and 4 from Delhi. Additionally, 5 students have been admitted into the D.S.E. (H.I.) Course this academic year.

Updates from B N Gupta Research Centre The staff has been preparing research proposals in accordance with the following funding agencies: • Vision Group on Science and Technology (VGST) • Integrated Program for Older Persons (IPOP) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) • Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme (DDRS) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MSJE) • Indian Council of Social Sciences Research (ICSSR) Southern Regional Centre (SRC) The department has also reached out to other Institutes of Speech and Hearing for collaborative projects.

Internship students from St. Thomas College, Palai, Kerala have been working on their projects assigned

by the biostatistician at BNGRC. They are involved in presentations, discussions and report writing related to their project at the department.

B.N. Gupta Research Centre has also been actively involved in the preliminary work required to bring out the institute’s publication journal. The staff has been working alongside Dr. G. Purushottama in constituting the Editorial Board, list of reviewers, and inviting articles to be published in the journal.

BNGRC has started preparing study modules for masters students for a certificate course on scientific writing named as “Writers’ Lab”. The course will contain various exercises as well as pointers to write each section of a dissertation and journal article.

Meetings Attended

Mrs. P.T. Usha and Mrs. Prakash attended the meeting called by Banasavadi Police Station on road Safety measures to be taken by the school authorities, parents, and teachers. The police authority has asked the school to put up a board that says School Zone for traffic to slow down.

On June 14th, Mrs. Padmavijaya attended the meeting called by Mrs. Indumathi Rao on “New education policy- draft� concerned with education of children with special needs.

Updates from Sunaad School Cognizant

On 13th April 2019, Cognizant team conducted computer examination for the teachers of Sunaad School who had undergone computers classes conducted by Cognizant; all teachers attended the theory and practical exam.

Updates from Sign Language Unit During this quarter, we were engaged with different activities. There were five new admissions to the Functional Sign Language Course. The Diploma students of both semesters continued their training in ISL. The enthusiastic participation of the students in learning and activities was very inspiring.

The staff from Sign Language Unit was invited as sign language interpreters at the Town Hall meeting held at Lemon Tree Hotel. Concerned professional organizers recruited staff, 30% of whom were differently-abled. The guests were intrigued with the way individuals with hearing impairment used sign language as their mother tongue. There was a dynamic interaction between the concerned HR managers and also the individuals with hearing impairment.

• Ms. Greeshma scored 78% in II PUC and has now been enrolled to B.Com with CA foundation course.

• Ms. Keerthana scored 87.8% in 10th class (CBSE) and has now been enrolled to PUC. A meeting for fathers was called on April 12th at MTC. 25 Fathers of children with hearing impairment attended the meeting. On this occasion, Mr. Suresh, Vice Principal Dr. S.R.C.ISH spoke about “Role of Fathers in bringing up the Hearing Impaired Child”. Mr. Shobin, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies spoke about “Care and Maintenance of cochlear implant”. Mr. Mallikarjun spoke about “School readiness and role of parents once the child gets integrated into a regular school”. The meeting ended with lunch sponsored by Cochlear India Pvt. Ltd. This initiative taken by the center was highly appreciated by the participants.

Other News Obituary We regret the sad demise of Mr. Nanda Kumar who worked as a security guard at our institute for almost 2 decades. He passed away on 16th June, 2019.

We are grateful for his service to this institute and especially remember his service to our founder, Dr. Chandrasekhar.

A tribute to Mr. Nanda Kumar from Ms. Thulasi Prasad, a former employee at Dr. S.R.C.ISH.

Mr. Nanda Kumar was an honest, sincere, and humble person. He was very trustworthy. He worked with Dr SR Chandrasekhar in his ENT clinic at Residency Road for almost two decades. After this, he remained loyal to Dr. SRC and started working at the Institute. He was very dedicated and took care of Dr.SRC and worked in the Institute as well. He used to come to work at 6:00 am and work till 8:30 am during which he took care of Dr. SRC and all his needs. After that he would attend to his duties at the Institute.

His service to the institute and to Dr. SRC was invaluable in many ways and it feels like he was always next to Dr. SRC guarding the institute and sitting by his statue till his last breath. True to his nature he breathed his last at the institute while on duty.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved-ones. May his soul rest in peace.

Ms. Vaishali Prabhu joined the Department of Speech Language Studies as a Jr. Clinical Supervisor.

Dr. G. Purushotham, Editor holds a doctoral degree from Rochester University. He was a Professor at All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore for over a decade and worked as a guest faculty at Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, for more than a decade. He has been an active member of Indian Speech and Hearing Association and was Chairman of Editorial Board. He has written and published booklets in Kannada on Speech Language and Hearing disorder. His joining as Editor of the upcoming Journals & Publication division of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, fine tunes publications of the Institute.

We acknowledge the dedicated service of Ms. Padma Prabha who retired as Headmistress of Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired. She served for over 3 decades.

We also bid farewell to Mr. Suman and Ms. Husna Firdose, Assistant Professors from the Dept. of Hearing Studies. Mr. Suman served at this institute for 4 years and Ms. Husna for a year.

Draft National Education Policy, 2019: What does it mean for Early Childhood Care Professionals?

The draft National Education Policy (NEP), 2019 headed by Dr. K. Kasturirangan has discussed four major aspects: School Education, Higher Education, Additional Key Focus Areas The author and Transforming Education. The draft NEP emphasizes on the following: high quality foundational literacy and numeracy; new curricular frameworks based on play; formal education from 3 years of age so that children get 3 years of quality stimulation before they start first grade; transforming the assessment methods; conducive school environments; continuous professional development of teachers; integrated as well as inclusive education; ending the isolation of small schools by means of school complexes; regulation and accreditation of private schools; effective implementation of Right to Education Act; protection of child rights and many other aspects of early childhood care and education. The draft NEP also recommends developing a two-part curriculum for early childhood care and education: (i) guidelines for up to threeyear-old children (for parents and teachers) (ii) educational framework for three to eight-year-old children. Another recommendation is to co-locate anganwadis with primary schools to minimize logistic issues for the parents.

So what do all these mean for child care professionals like us? There is a lot of responsibility on us, as professionals to take these recommendations forward. We can collectively work towards these goals by working on the following (or more as necessary).

• Developing modules for the Foundational Literacy Program by incorporating aspects of oral language and emergent literacy.

• Training teachers of pre-primary children on various aspects of child development (whole child development/

development of all the aspects including, motor, sensory, cognitive, language and social skills), including play.

• Helping in the establishment of rich school literacy environments and reading clubs.

• Working as a liaison between school personnel and parents of children with special/high needs.

• Development of indigenous culturally appropriate teaching learning materials and assistive devices ranging from no tech and low tech to high tech.

The need for high quality early childhood care and education has never been greater, considering the changes in the family structure and dynamics, lifestyle changes, and employment status of both parents. Preschools these days, mushrooming in every street, are more like glorified day care centres and to make matters worse are very academic oriented. As childhood care professionals, the onus is on us to emphasize on developmentally appropriate practices for children from 0 to 8 years of age, a period during which most of the cognitive and language development takes place.

Clinical Facilities Department of Hearing Studies Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies.

Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level.

Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively.

Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service.

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking.

Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs.

Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.

Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc.

Endostroboscopy: The Institute is equipped with state of the art Endostroboscope facility to assess vocal cord vibration patterns, mucosal pliability, study the underlying layered structure of the vocal folds, etc. This accurate diagnostics help the patient to get the most appropriate treatment.

Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.

Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth.

Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent.

Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing.

Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.

Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ).

IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities.
