Dear friends, The last quarter between April to June 2016 had been quite demanding as students were getting ready for the exams; delighted to share the happy news that the X Std students of Sunaad school, 18 of them appeared for exam and 12 secured first class and 6 second class in SSLC. This is for the third consecutive year that the school achieved this distinction.

The staff and students of the college were busy with completing portions, dissertations and nevertheless receiving the Local Inquiry Committee (LIC) of the University.

The Trustees and the Management Committee had been involved in various fund raising activities and working out strategies for drawing talents and retaining them among the staff as well as students!!

The admission to all courses offered by the Institute had overwhelming response with very large number of applications. We are striving to do our best!!

Graduation Day The Graduation of outgoing students was conducted on the 29th of April, 2016. Dr. H.C. Ramesh (Ex-Director of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka) and Sri U.T. Khader (Hon’ble Minister for Health and Family, Govt. of Karnataka) were invited to preside over the ceremony. Hon’ble Minister Sri U.T. Khader conveyed his best wishes to the outgoing students and assured his continued support to the Institute. The graduating students belonged to Bachelors’, Masters’, B.Ed. and Diploma in Special Education courses. It was a proud moment for the parents and students. Induction Ceremony

The new batch of 1st BSLPA students was inducted into the course on the 27th of June 2016, Monday.

The induction ceremony was presided over by CA K. Raghu, Immediate Past President of ICAI and Swami Veereshananda, Chairman of Ramakrishna Vivekananda Ashrama at Tumkur. Mr. Raghu spoke to the students of

the 10 essential qualities that they should inculcate for success, including humility and hard work. The highly qualified Swamiji held the attention of students with humorous and meaningful anecdotes and spoke about the importance of time management and hard work. He also planted a sapling in the Institute campus.

Ph.D. News Dr. Anita Reddy (Reader, Department of Speech Language Studies) was rewarded for her hard work in June 2016, when she was awarded Doctorate degree for the Thesis titled “Vocal Techniques & Acoustic Correlates of Vibrato in Singers” under the guidance of Dr. Uma Subramanian by Bangalore University.

Ms. Deborah Athaide from the Department of Speech Language Studies, on 17th of June 2016 spoke at Sankara Eye Hospital on the topic “Better Communication: Verbal and Non-verbal Communication”.

Faculty Development Programme Mr. Prashasti Poovaiah and Mr. Suman N., attended the 2-day Dangerous Decibels Educators Training Workshop held on 26th and 27th June, 2016 at National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore. This was conducted

by Dr. William Hal Martin, Director of the Audiology M.Sc. Programme, NUS. Dr. Martin was the 1st Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Travel Fellow Instituted by the Indian Speech and Hearing Association in 2014. Hope our collaboration continues!!

Mobile Bus and Outreach Unit

In order to increase the reach our services to the public, free speech and hearing camps were held at various sites in and around Bengaluru. More than 400 individuals were tested and those who were found to be suffering from speech/ hearing disorders were referred back to the Institute for further detailed evaluations and intervention.

Educational Expo The staff and students of the Institute participated in the Educational Expo conducted by Vijayavani at Freedom Park on the 7th and 8th of May 2016. A banner carrying information regarding the courses offered and the facilities available were put up. Pamphlets and brochures carrying information about the free education to children with hearing impairment offered in Sunaad School were distributed. The visitors to the stall were also given details regarding the camps being organized and the mobile speech and hearing unit which made service provision to rural areas easier. A total of 36 target audience visited the stall and learned about the institute.

Educational Expo

The institute also participated in the “Edu-verse” (Education-expo) organized by Deccan Herald and Prajavani at Jayamahal Palace grounds on the 28th and 29th May 2016. A total of 72 target audience visited the stall and gathered details about the course and the services offered at the Institute.

Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired Annual examinations from classes 1 to 9 were conducted from 21st March to 1st April, 2016. Eighteen students appeared for the SSLC examinations held at Jyothi School from 30th March to 11th April, 2016. This year the school secured 100% pass results. Akshay Kumar came first with a percentage of 77.65%, Abu Sufiyan, who secured 76% secured the 2nd rank and Likhith Kumar G., came third with 74.12%.

Sunaad School June Report School reopened on 1st of June-Academic year 2016-17 after summer vacation. The total strength as on 30th June 2016 is 179 from Pre School to SSLC. Visitors to Sunaad School On 10th June, Lion V. Krishna Reddy along with the members of Lions Club Visited the Sunaad school and went around the school and interacted with the students.

On 27th June, Parents of Hearing Impaired Children (Mrs. Singdha Sarkar, Mrs. Susmita Dass, and others) from Anwesha Kolkata, West Bengal visited the school. They interacted with students and appreciated the efforts taken

by School to help students to communicate effectively, in addition to academics.

• Students were grouped in to 4 categories, topics were given before hand and prizes were distributed accordingly, and all students participated enthusiastically.

On the 1st of April, Mr. Mallikarjun, father of a child with hearing impairment was invited from Mysore to interact with about 20 fathers in the Mothers’ Training Programme. He spoke about the importance of a father’s role in development of the child’s language and in mainstreaming their wards. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat (Vice Principal and HOD, Hearing Studies) graced the occasion with her presence and knowledgeable contributions to any doubts that arose among the audience.

The Mothers’ training centre reopened after summer holidays on June 1st, 2016. Seven new children were enrolled for the academic year 2016-17. Dr. Rashmi spoke to the mothers about the importance of regular audiological evaluations. The parents appreciated the comprehensible manner in which she put forth the information.

On the World Environment Day, which fell on the 5th of June 2016, the children visited a nursery as part of their education about the various types of plants. They learnt about the importance of plants and their contribution in protecting the environment. It was an educative trip. The children also planted few saplings in the campus.

During the last week of March, the writing and verbal skills of the children were evaluated, and 3 children were considered eligible for integration into mainstream schooling.

Students Association of Speech & Hearing (SASH) Report Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) plays an integral part in the life of students at ISH and everyone looks forward to the programs through the academic year.

The new SASH committee was elected this April 2016 and Ms. Megha Ravindran handed over the responsibilities to Ms. Charlotte D’Souza, President for the academic year 2016-17. The other elected committee members are Mr. Sarath D. Das (General Secretary), Ms. Kavana Bopanna

It was a day filled with fun and frolic with much entertainment, music, magic, games and a dance floor. The programme

included some melodious singing, energy-filled dancing, games and exchange of gifts between the outgoing batch and their juniors. There was an enchanting magic show

by Mr. Charles (1st year Diploma Student). The day ended with the much awaited dance floor.

Emotional Intelligence

The author, Mrs. Alphonsa Joseph is Associate Professor & H.O.D. Psychology Unit. Her areas of interest are Learning Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Behavioural Training and Parent Training.

Our behaviours are inseparable from our emotions, there is no thinking without feeling, no feeling without thinking, action, feeling and thought all affect one and another. We literally make choices about how we feel. Recognizing, understanding and choosing how we think, feel and act is broadly called. Emotional intelligence, a term coined

by Daniel Goleman. It shapes our interactions with others and understanding of ourselves, it allows us to set priorities, and also defines how we learn. Emotional intelligence is closely related to ourselves and our reactions to others, research suggest that emotional intelligence is responsible for as much as 80% of the ‘success’ in our lives. To understand our emotional intelligence, we have to understand these areas: • Know yourself or increasing self-awareness by building emotional literacy - by identifying and recognizing one’s emotion and how it effects our thoughts and behaviour.

• Self-management is the capacity to control our behaviors resulting from our emotions in appropriate and productive ways.

• Identity and understand emotional needs of others, based on verbal and non-verbal cues, to improve interpersonal sides and social awareness • Social responsibility and management of relationship which is the ability to communicate effectively and to interact in well behaved manner Fostering and nurturing emotional intelligence in children is important as emotions are what connects us; teaching a child the healthy skill for social and emotional behaviour will help children to learn better, solve problems and develop positive social relationships, and lead to academic success and self confidence Ways to teach emotional intelligence • Help your child identify the emotion, teach them to name their feelings – like happy, sad, angry, and later move on to more complex emotions as frustrated etc.

• Role play, take their part and require them to respond to others, role playing often encourage empathy and is one of the earliest ways to understand our emotions, and other perspective • Teach them to solve their problems, creative exploration allows the child to develop, and they experience the sense of “process” • Teach and foster empathy, having a pet usually is one of the best ways to foster empathy • Take change of your own emotions and your own emotional barometer Emotional intelligence is a skill that we continue to chance all our lives, it is a skill that allows us to manage our stress, interactions and complex relationship in a complex would we live in.

Farewell With a heavy heart, we bid farewell to Ms. Thulasi Prasad, Ms. Prakruthi C. Shetty and Mrs. Margret Joseph. Ms. Thulasi was with us since November 2014 and has contributed greatly to the progress of the Institute and the Department of Speech Language Studies. Ms. Prakruthi was a devoted teacher and has been with us since June 2015. Mrs. Margret served for 4 years as Principal of Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired and 5 years as head of sign language unit. We wish them immense success in their future endeavours.

We had the pleasure of hosting a veteran ENT Surgeon Dr. H.C. Ramesh, former Director of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Karnataka and Director of UNIDO on 6th May 2016.

A person with a vast, unique experience and vision, Dr. Ramesh fondly recalled how he had been mentored by the founder of our Institute Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar.

He recorded his appreciation and compliments to the founder and the Institute.

A rural client, aged 70 years, walked into the chambers of our Director and Chairman Rtn. Dr. M.S. Venkatesh pleading for a free Behind-The-Ear digital hearing aid as he lost the one already given free of cost by the Institute. Looking at his need and plight, the Chairman promptly approved of giving him the same make and model of hearing aid free of cost from the kitty donated by Lions club (Lion Dr. Krishna Reddy, Manchester, UK). The client walked out cheerfully.

Dr. H.C. Ramesh was a silent spectator of the scene and later recommended that we may probe to seek assistance binder the elderly care schemes of the Government.

During the discussion he also highlighted the need for creating photo voltaic facility in the campus to which the Chairman replied that we only have solar heaters and for want sturdy roof top space to locate and maintain solar cells.

The meeting ended with a note that we may expand our outreach activities to neighbouring districts as well.

Sign Language

Ms. Prema Lohia, Mr. Sriram and Mr. Prakash trained the managers at the Bangalore Air Bus Engineering Training Office in communication skills. They were coached and their natural skills were honed

by Mr. Morgan, a special trainer from France.

Ms. Prema and Mr. Prakash then went on to train 12 Managers at Hotel Marriott, Whitefield. The staff of the sign language unit were involved in counselling persons with hearing impairment, parents of children with disabilities and providing sign language interpretation services in courts in police cases.

A total of 12 persons including a hearing impaired mother and her 9 year old daughter have enrolled for Level ‘A’ functional Sign Language and Functional English. A new Between the 11th and 23rd of April 2016, staff from the sign language approach by way of using special activities, unit were invited by the Catholic Missionaries of Bangalore to train 9 of sign language was introduced also to the 2nd their Sisters in sign language. and 4th semester Diploma students.

International Yoga Day

Radio Jockey Faizaan and team from popular Radio Channel “Radio Mirchi” hosted the ‘Radio Mirchi Campus Connect’ on the 27th April, 2016. Girls from 2nd year Bachelors’ bagged the first place for their dance performance. Zumongi, a 1st year Bachelors’ student was placed second for her melodious vocal performance.

Kavana and Krithika (1st year Masters’ Students) were placed third for their duet dance. The prizes were given away by Dr. M.S. Venkatesh (Chairman), Prof. R. Rangasayee (Director Technical) and Dr. Madhuri Gore (Principal).

International Yoga day was observed on the 21st of June 2016. It was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Institute. Mrs. Mageetha, a certified Yoga teacher guided the students of NIOS to perform a few Yogasanas. The students performed highly complex Asanas with apparent ease. Mrs. Mageetha also spoke about Pranayama and Mudras that help with different ailments and demonstrated them. The audience included staff, parents and children, who performed the postures with fervour.
