A world without activity limitation for persons with communication disorders.

The final quarter of 2020 was an eventful one at Dr.S.R.C.ISH. Dr. Sarika Khurana has been appointed as the Deputy Director - Clinical and Dr. Rashmi Bhat as the Deputy Director Academics. We look forward to reaching greater heights under their able guidance.

Online learning opportunities for parents, students, and professionals were organized. The Department of Speech Language Studies conducted a 3-day webinar for parents titled Synergy: Parent & SLP; Dr.S.R.C.ISH College, in collaboration with Dept. of Psychology, conducted a panel discussion on the topic “Literate Environments for Early Childhood Care and Education”; and the Department of Hearing Studies in association with Internal Quality Assurance Cell organized a 6-Day National CRE webinar ‘AUDISHCON 2020 – Nuts and Bolts for Audiology in Clinics: Beyond your Textbooks’ for students and professionals.

A webinar “From Experienced Parents to Novices” was conducted in Kannada by Mrs. Ratna Shetty and M. Kalplana Hegde.

An event titled ‘Say Yes to Quiet’ was conducted by the Dept. of Hearing Studies during the Diwali season to spread awareness about noise.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated with numerous public awareness activities including videos, flyers, talks, and competitions; and a free speech and hearing screening camp.

Webinars Conducted Synergy: Parent & SLP

The Department of Speech Language Studies, Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech & Hearing, organized a free webinar titled “Synergy: Parents & SLP”. This online platform gave an opportunity to parents and their families to interact with Speech Language Pathologists. This webinar was held from 2nd- 4th Dec., 2020. 59 individuals registered for the webinar. A total of 6 speakers spoke for half an hour each on different topics. Panel Discussion: Literate environments for early childhood care and education On 15th December, 2020, Dr.S.R.C.ISH College, in collaboration with Dept. of Psychology, conducted a panel discussion on the topic “Literate Environments for Early Childhood Care and Education”. The focus areas of this discussion were: 1. How are spoken language, reading, and writing related to each other?

2. How can parents and caregivers create a literacy rich environment at home?

3. How can educators create literacy rich and language stimulating environments in school? How can language, literacy connections be enhanced to build strong foundations for meaningful learning inside preschool classrooms?

4. Does an excessive reliance on visual medium (including screens) impact Auditory Processing in young children and can it affect literacy development?

How can classroom learning environments and teacher skills be enhanced to facilitate meaningful and purposeful learning in ways that honour learner diversity?

5. How do educators of children from rural areas, semi urban areas, and urban slums look at this perspective of literacy development?

6. Early language and literacy training in the context of NEP and children with special needs Parents of children with special needs, therapists, preschool teachers, faculty, and students of Dr.S.R.C.ISH attended the discussion. The discussion was well received and the attendees suggested having more training programmes on the lines of this discussion.

Nuts and Bolts for Audiology in Clinics: ‘Beyond your textbooks’

The Department of Hearing Studies in association with IQAC organized a 6-Day National CRE webinar “AUDISHCON 2020 – Nuts and Bolts for Audiology in Clinics: Beyond your Textbooks” from 14th December 2020 to 19th December 2020. (RCI-CRE status was given for the first three days of the webinar).

345 delegates attended this webinar; these included graduate and postgraduate students from our institute and from other colleges; 190 professionals from various parts of India and from across the globe including United Arab Emirates, Brunei, Indonesia, Kuwait, Bahrain and the United Kingdom. Dr. Jayashree S. Bhat delivered the Keynote address followed by a host of eminent speakers.

The webinar consisted of two talks every day and focused on topics from diagnosis to intervention. The order of talks was chosen based on the test battery used very commonly. The feedback from participants reflected that this webinar was a brush-up of skills for all the professionals while students were able to get a lot of tips and tricks to use in the clinics to perform their best patient care.

“Awareness Session by Dysphagia India” (Served as panellist)

Dr. Premalatha (Professor) has been elected as Chairman of IAPEN (Advancing Nutrition care in India, Bangalore Chapter) Dysphagia Core Group.

Talks On 17th Nov., 2020, Mr. Sonykutty George, a Child Protection Specialist in the Hyderabad Field Office of UNICEF addressed the staff and students of Dr.S.R.C.ISH on “Child Rights - An Overview”. He spoke about the dignity and equality of all human beings and gave relevant examples to make everyone understand the importance of child rights.

He described, in detail, the guiding principles for child rights and specific rights related to children. The session was interactive and many students were curious to understand child rights with specific reference to children with special needs. It was a very informative session.

On 10th December, 2020, as a part of Expert Series Lectures, a session was arranged for the students and staff of the institute on “Financial Management”. Mr. D.S. Vivek and Ms. Roopa Sudharshan were the invited speakers. Their presentation on financial planning was very enlightening and was received very well.

Events Blood Donation Camp

A voluntary Blood donation camp was organized by Lions Blood Bank , Unit of Bangalore Lions Service Trust (BLST) under the Chairmanship of Ln. V.V. Krishna Reddy on 9-10-2020 at the Institute Auditorium. Staff and students of Dr.S.R.C.ISH donated blood.

‘Say Yes to Quiet’ The Department of Hearing Studies at Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore conducted a Public Awareness program “Say Yes to Quiet”, on the 13th of November, 2020. The program was conducted for a period of 1.5 hours (from 11.00 am to 12.30 pm) on a virtual platform.

The event was aimed at creating awareness among the public about the hazardous effects of noise and celebrating a noise free Diwali. There were presentations by four members of the faculty from DHS. Ms. Cynthia Sathees spoke about noise and its sources, Ms. Tessy Henry Gomez spoke about the auditory and non-auditory effects of noise and crackers, Mr. Nitin Damam spoke about normal auditory functioning and Noise Induced Hearing Loss, and Ms. Subhashini Dhandayutham presented on Rehabilitative measures for NIHL, and Protection against noise and its effects.

Events The program had 70 attendees. The event also featured videos and 2 of the best posters from 15 entries received from the public.

International Day of Persons with Disabilities

causes, signs, symptoms and treatment options available for hearing disorders was released on the “International Day of Person’s with Disability” observed on the 3rd of December. It was planned and executed by Ms. Megha Sasidharan (HOD, Dept. of Hearing Studies) and Ms. Surakshya Riddhi Sigdel (final year Master’s in Audiology student- 2019-2021).

• Children sponsored by World Vision India, Bangalore were screened during this period. A total of 25 children were screened on the 3rd and 4th of the December, 2020.

“Central Auditory Processing Disorder”

• On the occasion of ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ on 3rd December 2020, free speech and hearing screening was conducted from 30th November to 5th December 2020.

• Dr. Anita Reddy (HOD SLS, Vice principal Dr.S.R.C.ISH, Ms. Prajna Kodgi (Asst. Professor) & Mr. Nitin (Clinical Supervisor) gave a talk on general speech, language, swallowing, and hearing impairments to parents and members of World Vision who were also oriented to the services available at Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing.

Public awareness activities: Speech and Hearing awareness fortnight:

The Indian Speech and Hearing Association conducted a speech and hearing awareness fortnight from 1st December to 15th December 2020. Faculty members of Dr.S.R.C.ISH actively participated in the panel discussions, activities and coordination of the events. Various activities with the aim of creating awareness about various speech and hearing aspects among the public were conducted.

The activities were videos, webinars, and social media contests.

Videos “Did you know” A video on “Did you know” certain facts on hearing, like 10

A short video on “Central Auditory Processing Disorder” created using a pictorial representation of Screening Checklist for Auditory Processing (SCAP) developed by Yathiraj A. and Mascarenhas K. (2003) aimed at helping the public to reach out for help if their loved ones or children showed signs of having auditory processing deficits. This video was also released on the 3rd of December, 2020. The video was created by Ms. Tessy Henry Gomez (Assistant Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies) and Mr. Akhil Dinesh (Bachelor’s final year student 2017-2021)

‘Speech and Language Disorders’ A video aimed at creating awareness about speech and language disorders among the general public was developed. Information on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Stuttering, Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Hearing Impairment, and Dyslexia was included in the video.

‘Success Stories’ A video on the success stories of children with hearing devices (Cochlear Implant and Hearing aids) and their journey from birth, identification of the hearing impairment, and their path to success was beautifully portrayed by the children themselves and their parents.

This video moved the hearts of many and was successful in capturing the emotion as well as the essence of what

Events other parents of children with hearing impairment would want to hear. The video was a creative effort by Ms. Sushma Padmanabha (Clinical Supervisor, Dept. of Hearing Studies) and Mr. Akhil Dinesh (Bachelor’s final year student 2017-2021).

Webinar: “From Experienced Parents to Novices“

On the 19th of December, 2020, a live webinar about Hearing loss was conducted in Kannada for a duration of 2.5 hours. The webinar “From Experienced Parents to Novices“ focused on the diagnostic process, the training period, role of the family, government funds and schemes, and sharing experiences.

Competitions

A quiz on how aware the public (non-speech and hearing professionals) are on speech and hearing facts and impairments was posted on Facebook, Whatsapp, and also sent via email. Approximately 50 responses were received and the 3 participants who answered all questions correctly were declared the winners. Mrs. Neethu Sujoy (Homemaker), Bijal Morzaria (Pilot), and Nathan Athaide (non- speech and hearing student) will be known as “The faces of Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing” and “The most aware citizens”.

The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH), participated in several of the online events including Poster making, DP designing, Tongue Twister challenge, and Slogan competition organized by the ISHA; they also made videos to raise awareness on Speech and Hearing Disabilities which were posted on social media platforms. Toy Drive

A toy drive was conducted during the Christmas Season.

Generosity was overwhelming as many toys and books were received. These will be used for children with special needs who visit Dr.S.R.C.ISH.

The speakers of this webinar were Mrs. Ratna B. Shetty (Coordinator of Mothers Training Programme) and Mrs. Kalpana Hegde (Auditory Habilitationist). Mrs Ratna Shetty spoke about the ‘Role of family in bringing up young hearing impaired children and government schemes available for hearing impaired’. A total of 60 parents of children with hearing impairment attended the webinar. A rigorous discussion took place in response to the many queries posted by the attendees. The organizers received appreciation and positive feedback from attendees.

Flyer

A flyer themed “Not all Disabilities are Visible” was released on the World Disability Day. It displayed several hearing related disorders and difficulties which are invisible and require professional assistance to identify.

Updates from BNG Research Centre Webinars

Dr.SRC-BNGRC organized a webinar on ‘The Art of Scientific Writing’ by Dr. Asha Yathiraj, Professor, JSS Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore on 27th October, 2020. The 65 attendees included staff and students of various institutes and speech and hearing professionals.

A webinar on ‘Forensic sciences and Speech Sciences -at cross roads?’ by Dr. Yeshoda, Associate Professor, AIISH, Mysore was held on 7th November 2020.

Eighty-five participants comprising of staff, students, and professionals from across the country attended the webinar.

Paper Presentation

BNGRC faculty, Mr. Suresh T., Ms. A. Srividya, Ms. Nimisha and Ms. Vaishali Prabhu were the authors for a scientific paper presented in ISHA BC conference held online on 30th October, 2020. The paper was titled ‘Application of Jadad scale in assessment of quality of research’.

Workshops Attended

The faculty of BNGRC attended an e-workshop on ‘Tool development and survey data analysis using Jamovi’ conducted by MAHE, data sciences.

The faculty also attended the AUDISHCON 2020 online from 14th to 19th December, 2020.

Dr.SRC.BNGRC extended logistical and thematic support to the studies undertaken by Dr. B.S. Premalatha, Professor of Dr.S.R.C.ISH and expert in Dysphagia and by Dr. Madhuri Gore, Professor of Dr.SRCISH and expert in CI assessment and management. Mr. Suresh T., research

Collaborative Research

As part of collaborative research with MAHE, 4 aspirants have registered for Ph.D. and are due to begin their course work.

BNGRC has started development of the patient management software with the collaboration of NITTE Meenakshi Institute of management, Mangalore. The modules of software have been prepared and first module is through the approval process. This will enable the institute for anywhere access to digital data of the patient and speed up patient reports and also take up research on patient data.

Public Awareness Activities

Indian Speech and Hearing Association -Speech and Hearing Awareness fortnight Faculty members of the research centre actively participated in the panel discussions, activities and coordination of the events. Ms. Srividya acted as ISHA link officer and Mr. Suresh T. was a panellist on the Vertigo and Tinnitus Awareness panel discussion held on 8/12/2020.

Mr. Suresh T. and Mrs. Srividya along with ISHA BC chapter members also participated in an interview to media (TV news channel - First TV-Kannada) in connection with the speech and hearing awareness week.

This was telecast on 16th Dec. 2020.

Updates from Sunaad School Teaching Activities

Rajyotsava Day

The students who failed in SSLC Board Exam (2019-20) appeared for the supplementary exam which was held from 22-09-2020 to 29-09-2020.

Visitors

Teachers continued teaching children through Google meet, by recording the online sessions, and also through Whatsapp. A convenient weekly timetable has set for teachers. Teachers are constantly helping students by sending content, worksheets, videos, PPT, assignments, and activities. Students are asked to post their assignments in google classroom or whatsapp groups. Recorded videos of lessons are being sent to the children with poor or no internet connectivity. The work done by students is also being assessed by teachers. Teachers are constantly in touch with both students and parents. Teachers started conducting formative assessment tests through online classes as per the CCE method. During the vacation, teachers continued sending assignments, worksheets and activities through Whatsapp. The work done by students is being assessed by teachers.

Special Days Observed Valmiki Jayanthi

On 31-102020, Valmiki Jayanthi was celebrated in the school library. The contributions of the famous poet and great saint Maharshi Valmiki was explained by the Mrs. Gowaramma, Assistant teacher of Sunaad school.

On 1st November 2020, Kannada Rajyotsava day was celebrated on our school premises. It was celebrated with great joy by respecting our Karnataka flag followed by the Kannada anthem (Rastra Geeta).

Teachers’ meeting was conducted on 9-11-2020, Lion V.S. Shanthavadhan Treasurer introduced Lion P. Pramod Kumar, Trustee to the teachers of Sunaad school as the school-in-charge. He interacted with the teachers. It was a good session.

On 10-11-2020 Mr. K. Shyamasundaram, Sr. AO and Biswamohan Matha, AAO visited Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing for a performance audit on Child Centric Grant; he also visited Sunaad School.

On 2nd October 2020, Gandhi Jayanthi was celebrated in the school library. The importance of Gandhiji’s life and principles was explained by Mrs. Gowramma, Assistant teacher.

Updates from Psychology Unit Dusherra

Dusherra was celebrated on 23rd October; parents joined in the festivities both virtually and in-person.

On 28th November, the staff of the psychology unit conducted a life skills training programme for 27 children from the Prajyothi Welfare Centre, a home for girl children who are in need of care and protection.

Ms. Alphonsa Joseph, Associate Prof. & Head, Psychology Unit Head, was awarded third prize for poster presentation.

Christmas was celebrated on 21st December with children attending behaviour therapy. Gifts were distributed to all the children after the celebration.

SASH Corner The pandemic may have affected our physical presence but the events conducted for and by students went on as usual via an online platform. Election for the new members of the Students Association of Speech and Hearing was conducted via Google forms, in the month of June 2020.

As usual online classes were held and parents were guided to train their children at home. Offine classes began in November; parents were advised to attend MTC on alternate days.

On Nov 14th, Children’s Day was celebrated. Jawaharlal Nehru’s photo was garlanded and parents and children offered flora tributes to Jawaharlal Nehru’s photo.

Principal, Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat distributed gifts to the children and spoke about the role of parents during the pandemic period.

The festival of lights, Deepavali was celebrated at the center. Goddess Lakshmi was worshiped and sweets were distributed to the children. The mythological story of Narakasura and Bali was narrated to children.

On Nov 19th, the birth anniversary of Indira Gandhi was observed at the center by garlanding her photo and offering flora tribute. Mrs. Mamatha B.V. spoke about Mrs. Indira Gandhi’s contribution to the nation.

On Dec. 24th, a crib was made and Christmas was celebrated at the centre. Senior parents also attended the celebration, Master Harsha dressed as Santa and distributed gifts to the children. Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat attended and wished the children.

Regular testing for COVID-19 is one of the measures taken to ensure safety of staff and students of the institute. She has worked as a Speech-Language Pathologist abroad and in India for over 25 years; her experience involves working with children in mainstream schools with inclusive education, schools with partial inclusion, special schools, rehabilitation centers, and private clinics.

We bid farewell to Ms. Saranya who served as a Clinical Supervisor in the Dept. of Speech Language Studies for the past 2 years.

Next, my aim was to find the Gender and Age statistics. The results of my findings were that males were more prone to disorders when compared to females.

My Research in the Organisation as an Intern I started my work by collecting patient details from January 2020 to December 2020 (preCOVID and postCOVID). My finding was that the patient load decreased at the time of COVID i.e. from April to July, later it increased from August to November. The patient load increased again in December.

Similarly, the age group of 1 to 10 years and above 60 years were more affected than other age groups.

My Experience

I had a wonderful experience and great learning in this organisation, it increased my thought process and knowledge. About Cochlear Implants 1. What is a hearing aid and cochlear implant?

A Hearing Aid is an electronic device that amplifies sounds for individuals with hearing loss/ difficulty in hearing.

It is a three-part system containing a microphone, an amplifier, and a speaker.

6. Why are cochlear systems so expensive?

The cochlear implant is a costly device because it involves fine parts that are meant to be robust in structure and its functioning. Both the external and the internal parts should be manufactured with care so as to last longer. In addition, it involves a brain surgery to get it implanted to the skull, skills of several professionals, cost of theatre time, support staff, and the disposables. The costs may be quite significant and may seem overwhelming; however some private and group medical insurance policies may cover the cost of the device and surgery.

A Cochlear Implant is an electronic device that has an external and an internal (surgically implanted beneath the skin into the skull) part. The external part involves a sound processor (digitally codes the signal) and a coil (transmits digitized signal to the internal receiver). Unlike in the case of Hearing aids, Cochlear Implantation is a surgical procedure. Cochlear implants can be considered for individuals who have a severe to profound degree of hearing loss and who prove to have no or limited benefit with hearing aids.

Both these devices help in improving hearing abilities, speech understanding, and hence improve the quality of life for individuals with hearing impairment.

2. Is cochlear implant better than a hearing aid?

PLEASE NOTE: One is not better than the other.

For a rough understanding, hearing aids are best suited for people with severe hearing loss and fair speech understanding. On the other hand, cochlear implants are best suited for people with more severe hearing losses, poor speech understanding, and those who show no/ limited benefits with hearing aids.

3. What type of hearing loss does cochlear implant help?

In cases of sensorineural hearing loss of a severe to profound degree, cochlear implantation can be considered.

However, candidates to be implanted should undergo a battery of pre-implant tests to make sure they are selected with utmost care.

4. How young a candidate can be considered for Cochlear Implantation?

Surgical safety is of primary importance. Cochlear implantation can be done as early as 12 months of age as approved by the FDA. However, in cases of medical conditions like meningitis, the implantation can be done earlier on the surgeons’ discretion.

5. Is there any age limit for cochlear implants?

There is no age limit for cochlear implant. Cochlear

Due to the surgery one may experience mild to moderate pain in and around the ear or have headache for a few days.

8. Do cochlear implants last a lifetime?

Present day Cochlear implants offer a warranty of 10 years.

No. However, when hearing levels of the non-implanted ear are in the profound range it is possible to improve speech understanding through the use of hearing aid in that ear with a cochlear implant in the other ear.

10. What is the success rate of cochlear implants?

Cochlear implants are the world’s most successful medical prosthesis in that less than 0.2% of recipients reject it or do not use it.

The failure rate needing re-implantation is around 0.5%. (hearinglink.org).

11. Does a cochlear implant cure tinnitus?

Cochlear implant need not be considered if the patient has tinnitus as there are other effective and cheaper ways of dealing with it. However, if a candidate for a cochlear implant also has tinnitus as an existing concern, then a cochlear implant might help suppress tinnitus to some extent, if not completely.

Yes, you can use headphones/earphones with cochlear Implants. Noise cancellation headphones work better with the device. There are brand specific accessories that are compatible with each implant. Using them with the guidelines will be the best option to look for.

13. Can you hear music through a cochlear implant?

Cochlear Implant helps in better perception/ appreciation of music and it’s components like rhythm, pitch, loudness etc… There are individuals with cochlear implants who are musicians as well. The advanced cochlear systems have bluetooth compatibility and other high tech functions which allow the implantees to pair the device to any gadgets of interest.

14. Can someone fly with a cochlear implant?

You can have your cochlear implant worn for the entire duration of the flight. You don’t need to turn off the speech processor during takeoff and landing. Cochlear implants do not interfere with navigational systems.

15. Can individuals with cochlear implants participate in all sorts of sports?

Individuals with cochlear implantation can participate in any sport, however there are mandatory care and precautions to be taken while involving in these activities.

The user should know the kind of sports they are engaging

in and the possible harm it can do to the implant in case it does.

General guidelines to be followed while indulging in these sports would be: • Protect your implant system • Protect your head from impact • Prevent moisture damage by protecting the sound processor from sweat during use and by using a drying system every day • Follow all instructions and warnings (Oticon medical) The cochlear implant user should also strictly abide by the sports specific guidelines. For example contact sports (boxing, rugby, judo, karate, etc.), sports recommending the use of helmet (cycling, horse riding, sailing, skiing, etc.) and water sports will have company and implant specific guidelines.

Red flags: With regards to sports such as sky diving and scuba diving, they are not recommended for implant users as the large air pressure changes caused during these activities can cause severe damage to the device leading to failure of the implant in some cases.

16. Why do cochlear implants fail?

The cochlear implants can suffer a failure if there is a head trauma after surgery or some issue with the electrode array, if the electrodes migrate out of place or due to infections of site of surgery or brain.

health effects. In workplace environments, noise-induced hearing loss remains highly prevalent and is progressively triggered by exposure to social noise (e.g. through private music players).

The World Health Organization (WHO) published a study in 2011 entitled ‘Environmental Noise Burden of Disease.’

Facts, Thoughts & Musings The study focused on ambient noise from aircraft, trains, and cars, as well as other sources in the surroundings, and then explored connections to health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, sleep disorder, tinnitus, childhood cognitive impairment, and annoyance. The WHO team used the data to measure the life-years or DALYs adjusted for disability, essentially the healthy life-years lost to ‘unwanted’ human-induced dissonance.

The authors concluded that ‘there is clear evidence that ambient noise exposure has detrimental effects on the health of the population’ and that traffic noise was ranked second among public health environmental risks (first air pollution). The authors also noted that while other forms of pollution are decreasing, noise pollution is increasing.

Sound is an important and valuable part of everyday life.

But when sound becomes noise, it can negatively affect our mental and physical health.

In terms of the loudness (amplitude) and the pitch (frequency) of the wave, sound is usually defined. In logarithmic units called decibels (dB), loudness (also called sound pressure level, or SPL) is measured. Sounds ranging from 0 dB (hearing threshold) and around 140 dB can be heard by the average human ear, with sounds from 120dB and 140 dB causing pain (pain threshold). The ambient SPL in a library is about 35 dB, while that inside a moving bus or subway train is roughly 85 dB; building construction activities can generate SPLs as high as 105 dB at the source. SPLs decrease with distance from the source.

The rate at which sound energy is transmitted, called sound intensity, is proportional to the square of the SPL. Because of the logarithmic nature of the decibel scale, an increase of 10 dB in SPL represents a 10-fold increase in sound intensity, an increase of 20 dB represents in SPL represents a 100-fold increase in intensity, a 30-dB increase represents a 1,000-fold increase in intensity, and so on. When sound intensity is doubled, on the other hand, the SPL increases by only 3dB. At certain levels and durations of exposure, it can cause physical damage to the eardrum and the sensitive hair

cells of the inner ear and result in temporary or permanent hearing loss. Hearing loss does not usually occur at SPLs below 80 dBA (eight-hour exposure levels are best kept below 85 dBA), but most people repeatedly exposed to more than 105 dBA will have permanent hearing loss to some extent. In addition to causing hearing loss, excessive noise exposure can also raise blood pressure and pulse rates, cause irritability, anxiety, and mental fatigue, and interfere with sleep, recreation, and personal communication.

Day by day, noise pollution affects millions of people.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common health condition it induces. High blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbances, and stress can also be triggered by exposure to excessive noise. Observational and experimental studies have shown that exposure to noise contributes to irritation, disturbs sleep and induces daytime sleepiness, affects patient outcomes and hospital staff performance, increases hypertension and cardiovascular disease incidence. These health problems can affect all age groups, especially children. Many children who live near noisy airports or streets have been found to suffer from stress and other problems, such as impairments in memory, attention level, and reading skills.

Noise pollution control is therefore of importance in the workplace and in the community. Noise-control ordinances and laws enacted at the local, regional, and national levels can be effective in mitigating the adverse effects of noise pollution.

Outdated motor vehicles, machinery, rising traffic, congested residential areas, crowded educational institutions and workplaces, unregulated commercial and industrial noise have all become the sources for long term noise pollution. It is important to recognise areas of noise pollution and take corrective steps. The secure sound intensity should be inside toys, family, domestic, commercial, industrial equipment. Except in emergencies, loudspeakers and vehicular horns should be forbidden.

As sleep disruptions have significant long-term health effects, nocturnal noise emissions must be avoided near residential areas. The most vulnerable to noise-induced health hazards are pregnant women, foetuses, newborns, babies, and children and they all should be given the utmost protection. Noise levels should be routinely regulated by educational establishments, workplaces, commercial and industrial areas, and use of safe ear muffs and plugs must be consistently implemented. Traffic noise should be regulated to keep within safe limits. Bus-stands, railway stations, and airports should be established away from residential areas. Houses should be soundproofed suitably. Studies must be conducted on the long-term hazards of noise pollution in pregnant women, new-born children, and adults to obtain more data.

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking.

Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs.

Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas.
