Chairman Speaks

I take immense pleasure in presenting to our readers a report on the activities of the Institute during the second quarter through this issue of ISHLink. This quarter has seen the Institute take an active role in creating awareness while celebrating the World Autism day and the World Voice Day. This year also marks a decade since our specialised Voice Clinic was started and I wish to congratulate Ms. Anita Reddy for spearheading this niche venture which benefits professional voice users as well as those with problems in using their voice.

Inauguration of the Seminar Hall was done by Sri Yadalam N. Gangadhara Setty and I express my gratitude for the generous donation and support given by the family. The hall has been constructed in fond and respectful memory of Sri Yadalam S. Nanjaiah Setty and Smt. Annapurnamma.

During this quarter the Institute had the pleasure of hosting an ‘International Course on Managing Students with Communication Disorders in Inclusive Schools in Maldives’ jointly with COM-DEALL. I have the pleasure and honour to share that the Sunaad School for Children with Hearing Impairment have obtained 100% pass results with distinction in consecutive years.

I hope you will enjoy reading this issue. As always, we look forward and welcome your valuable feedback and suggestions to help us reach ever greater goals in fulfilling our duties towards the society. The meeting of Bangalore Speech and Hearing Trust was held on 27th May, 2015. Development activities, allocation of funds and grants for various activities and academic achievements of the Institute were discussed.

Celebrations at the Institute World Autism Awareness Day The Psychology Dept. and the COM-DEALL unit celebrated the World Autism Awareness Day 2015 on the 1st of April 2015. The UN theme for this year was Employment: The Autism Advantage. It is documented that the employers are missing out on abilities of people with autism in greater abundance than ‘Neurotypical’ persons, such as, heightened abilities in pattern recognition, logical reasoning, as well as a greater attention to detail. We were honoured to have Dr. Prathiba Karanth as the chief guest. Ms. Sumana Dutta, founder trustee, Akshadha Foundation and Mrs. Ruby Singh, founder of Assisted Living For Autistic Adults (ALFAA) shared their expertise and experience in providing vocational training for adolescents and adults with autism. Parents whose children were attending therapy for Autism at the Institute, staff and children with autism participated in the celebration. Autism Speaks has declared blue as the color that represents autism and the whole institute turned up wearing blue dress and blue ribbons to express solidarity then to the cause of Autism. In addition, in line with the slogan “Light It Up Blue” the Institute was lit up blue in lights on 1st to 2nd April which had scintillating effect.

World Voice Day On April 16th the Institute held poster, slogan and quiz competitions on themes such as ‘vocal hygiene’ and ‘public education on voice conservation’. The participants at the event were Master’s students. The program was conducted for increasing awareness on the voice and its importance in our daily life. World Voice Day is an event that focuses on voice care. This event was initiated in Brazil by a group of otolaryngologists which spread worldwide thereafter.

In this special clinic which runs every Wednesday morning, we have seen around 617 patients till 17th June 2015. The clientele comprises of professional voice users such as school teachers, lecturers, contractors, politicians, street hawkers, call center personnel, singers, actors, dubbing artists, homemakers and the general public. Voice disorders specific to vocal abuse, misuse, neurological, endocrinal, psychological, other structural abnormalities and laryngeal diseases such as cancer, granulomas, human papilloma virus were seen over the years. Both children and adult clients have benefitted from this facility.

We are hoping to continue growing in this area and take it to the next level by way of spreading awareness among the general public. The contributions and referrals from medical professionals in and around Bangalore and South India are highly appreciated and we hope to continue working in collaboration with them.

Decade of Voice Clinic The year 2015 commemorates ten good years of running the Voice clinic, a special facility in our Institute. The idea of beginning a voice clinic emerged, when two of our staff decided to visit Dr. Rudrappa’s clinic in Richmond road to visualize a surgical procedure on the larynx (Voice box) in the year 2004. The surgery was performed by Dr. Sankarshana, an E.N.T. Surgeon who specialized in Phono-surgery (voice surgery) under Dr. Ishiki from Japan. The staff related this experience to the then Director (Technical), Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, who took up the proposal and initiated the voice clinic. At that time, the Institute had just purchased the endo-stroboscope from a German company, in December 2004. Everything seemed to fall in place, and the Voice Clinic started functioning in August, 2005.

The aim of the Voice Clinic is to preserve, conserve and rehabilitate the voice of Professional voice users and its objectives are to assess and treat individuals with voice disorders such as vocal nodules, vocal polyps, vocal fold paralysis and the like. The Voice clinic comprises of a team of professionals (a Speech language Pathologist & and ENT surgeon) dedicated to voice rehabilitation. Ms. Anita Reddy (M.Sc., HLS), a senior Speech Language Pathologist working in our Institute, (specialized in the assessment and treatment of voice disorders) and Dr. Sankarshana (Phonosurgeon) were the first team.

Later, Dr. Tara, trained in endostroboscopy in Deenanath Mangeshkar Voice clinic, Pune was with us for a short while. Both the doctors left us in 2011 & 2014 respectively.

We acknowledge their dedication and energetic collaboration with us. Dr. Sanjay Subbaiah, an ENT surgeon (joined us in 2013) is currently working with us and is actively involved in the team. Good discussions take place on surgical intervention and voice therapy.

On 21st June The First International Yoga Day was celebrated to commemorate the day, many yoga awareness sessions were conducted all over the country. At our Institute, yoga is a regular part of the activities of students at the NIOS section of the Psychology Unit. These students who face various challenges in their everyday life, cope better and look forward to their yoga sessions with much eagerness. With the guidance of their teacher Ms. Magitha, the students performed various asanas very well.

Ms. Magitha also got the staff of the Institute to do yoga for increasing their health and well being in coping with daily stresses of life.

Education Fair at Gnana Degula A premier education fair, Gnana Degula is organized by Deccan Herald annually. This year the fair was held at Tripura Vasini, Palace Grounds on May 26 and 27. The education fair provided an opportunity to showcase the field of audiology and speech language pathology as rewarding careers. Our stall had very good foot falls and enquiries.

Research Publication Award Research is one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of being in the profession of audiology and speech language pathology. Research Publication awards have been instituted to further encourage faculty and students to continue with pioneering research activities. Ms. Anita Reddy received a cash prize of rupees 10,000 for publishing two research papers in peer reviewed indexed journals of International standing during the award ceremony on 30th April, 2015.

Graduation Day Graduation is an exciting time for students; it has both an ending and beginning- warm memories from the past and big dreams for the future. It is a special day when students have mixed feelings of joy, fulfilment, anxiety and achievement. This day is a landmark in the life of every student! The Graduation ceremony was graced by the chief guest Sri R. Jagadeesh Kumar (Honb’le Member of Legislative Assembly, Hebbal Constituency, Govt. of Karnataka) and the guest of honour Rtn V.V. Sanyasi Rao (Past Dist. Governor, Rotary International District 3020). Rtn V.V. Sanyasi Rao is an internationally acclaimed trainer who infused energy and confidence through his speech to the graduating students.

The students in turn reflected on good and unforgettable lessons learnt from the past. Now, the future stands awaiting new opportunities and experiences to be explored. On this cheerful occasion several of our students received awards for their excellence in academic performance. Placement cell facilitates employment of the Alumni on regular basis.

Induction Ceremony On 25th June the Institute welcomed its students for the first year of the Bachelors in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology course by having an Induction ceremony. The chief guest for the event was Dr. N. Shivshankar (Prof. & Head, Dept of Speech and Language Pathology and Audiology, NIMHANS) and the Guest of Honour was Dr. C. Manohar (Executive Director and Dean, Institute of Business Management and Reasearch & International Business School, Bengaluru). The Chief guest, Dr. N. Shivshankar sent out a valuable message to the students on the significance and value of their studies in audiology and speech language pathology. This message was put across to the students in a practical route using examples and humour to drive the message home. The Guest of Honour, Dr. C. Manohar appreciated the parents on guiding their children to take up this unique course. He reiterated to the parents that the profession is a noble one which adds value and meaning to the lives of those with communication impairments.

On 19th of April 2015, SASH had organized a farewell for the outgoing batches of our college (3rd Bsc and 2nd Msc.). The theme of the event was “AQUA”; it was successful and the very first event of the new SASH. It was organized in the auditorium and the event started at 11:00 am went up to 6:00 pm. This was the event when the old SASH members handed over the badges and scrolls to the new SASH members. ‘We as SASH would thank the management for giving us the permission for conducting the event’ said Ms. Megha Ravindran, President of SASH.

Dr. Rashmi Bhat, H.O.D. of Department of Hearing Science was invited to the centre to give a talk on various tests involved in the diagnosis of hearing impairment. The session was followed by questions and answers. The mothers appreciated and thanked Dr. Rashmi Bhat for her input. Mrs. Ashwini from Cochlear India Pvt. Ltd., visited the centre on 11th June and gave a demonstration on new accessories of Nucleus 6 processor.

Representative of A.P.D. from various districts visited the centre to know more about the ‘Early Intervention Programme’ and sought guidance in starting similar programmes at district levels by A.P.D. The center was reopened on 11th May after one month summer holidays. Three children after completing 2 years of training in the Mothers Training Centre we are proud to say, have joined the regular schools in their respective hometowns.

Sign Language

The Institute has created a lot of awareness on sign language and aims to popularize it among the general public. During the second quarter of 2015 quite a few new admissions were taken in for the sign language course and English language for persons with hearing impairment.

Currently Ms. Roselin, Ms. Nimmi, Mr. Ashwin J., and Mr. Ramaswamy who have perfectly good hearing have taken a keen interest in learning this unique language. The texts suitable to each batch of students were prepared during this quarter. The Cell also engaged in documenting the

The services of our sign language interpreters was used in a police case where the statement of an accused with hearing impairment was recorded and interpreted for justice to be rightly delivered.

Sunaad School At the Sunaad School for students with Hearing Impairment, exams were held between 16th of March to 1st of April. Exams are a time of hectic activity as well as stress for students, teachers as well as parents. Being hearing impaired and competing with all other students at the state level was an enormous challenge faced by our students By overcoming barriers and giving hope and being a source of inspiration our students have achieved 100% pass results in the X standard board exams. It is an immense source of pride for us to highlight that four students secured distinction and seven students secured first class results in the state board exams. On behalf of the Institute we take pride in acknowledging and congratulating the following students, their parents and equally important their teachers on achieving these results.

Outreach and Extension Program Outreach Centre at Sheshadripuram

Our Outreach Centre is functioning actively at Primary Health Centre, Lions Club-North Bangalore, Siroor Park Road, Shesadripuram. Clients are availing regular speech therapy sessions at the centre. The Mobile Speech and Hearing bus which is a unique facility offered by the Institute was actively used for providing audiology and speech language pathology diagnostic facilities. The bus is equipped with the following advanced instruments: two AUDX OAE (Oto-Acoustic Emission) instruments, one Algo ABR (Auditory Brainstem Response) screening, GSI 61 Audiometer for a complete diagnostic evaluation. Voice & Voice Care The voice of a person is the sound generated by the vibration of vocal folds in the presence of air from the lungs. The production of sound from the throat with simultaneous movement of the tongue, lips and jaws results in comprehensible speech. Often times we take our vocal cords for granted by engaging in vocal abusive behaviours such as screaming, shouting, speaking over the phone for hours. This is commonly known as ‘vocal abuse’

by ENT doctors and Speech Language Pathologists.

Vocal Abuse: The symptoms of vocal abuse are, change in voice because of vocal fatigue, hoarseness of voice and voice breaks (fading of voice) at the end of the sentence during a conversation. These symptoms are common in those persons who use their voice for their profession such as teachers, lecturers, singers, actors, politicians, call centre personnel and the like.

Speech Therapy: When symptoms persist, individuals often visit the Ear, Nose & Throat doctors or General

Physicians, where they may diagnose as early vocal nodules and advice voice rest and/or speech therapy.

Speech therapy is important as it focuses on retraining the individual on good vocal habits. It has often proved the only remedy for vocal nodules and simultaneously retains the individuals on good vocal habits.

Tips to keep your voice healthy: • Speak in a tone that is comfortable and not inappropriately loud • Do not clear your throat often • Drinking adequate amounts of water often helps reduce the phlegm secretion on your vocal cords. Sipping water which is of room temperature or lukewarm during speaking engagements helps keep the throat moist, lubricated and healthy. No other drink (coffee, tea, soft drink, milk, etc) will help.

• Avoid shouting or screaming during sports events or while watching an entertainment show.

• If you are a singer or actor, practice singing or speaking dialogues everyday for an hour and do not overdo the vocal exercises. Vocal warm ups on a daily basis, as retrains, recommended by your trainer are necessary Imitating another person’s voice during the act of singing or speaking is hazardous to the vocal cords. This is strongly not recommended.

• If symptoms of voice change or hoarseness persist, it is advisable to see an ENT doctor and a Speech Therapist.

Clinical Facilities Department of Hearing Studies Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies.

Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level.

Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively.

Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service.

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking.

Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-ofhearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Noise Measurement: Identifying ‘noise’ as a cause for hearing loss, our Institute provides services to measure the noise levels in factories, work places and public areas. Autism - a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication and by restricted and repetitive behavior which manifests within the very first two years of life.

Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.

Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth.

Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent.

Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing.

Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.

Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ).

IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities.

Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability.

Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings.

Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement.
