Vision

Dear Friends,

A world without activity limitation for persons with communication disorders.

But for your patronage year 2015 would not have ended so beautifully well.

We have done good in all aspects of our functioning without compromising on quality of services, training or innovative need felt initiatives.

The activities of this semester including the academic initiatives as scheduled are reflected in this issue.

SIGN BEE is an innovative initiative of the Institute partnering with IEEE and GLASS, Bangalore in an effort to create an accessible world for persons with hearing impairment. The hearing children participated with great enthusiasm in learning sign language!! We hope this initiative would reach the momentum of SPELL BEE event being held in large scale in the country annually. The SIGN BEE is a socially more relevant program and is given due coverage in UN News on Disability.

The members of the Governing Council have assisted in guiding us in development activities with implementable suggestions.

Profuse thanks to all the members.

Inspite of busy schedules, the Trustees and members of management committee have devoted their time for Grievances Meeting and the Founders day meetings.

The year ahead has to be more development oriented.

We can achieve this only with the continued involvement of the staff, Trustees, donors and well wishers.

International day of Persons with Disabilities - Sign Bee Competition On the occasion of International day of Persons with Disabilities, challenging as well as innovative competition titled ‘Sign Bee’ was organised on December 3rd 2015 at the Institute in collaboration with IEEE and Glass. Sign language was taught to school children by Mrs. Margaret Joseph, Mrs. Prema Lohia and Mr. Ritwik of the Sign Language Unit at the Institute along with Ms. Rohini Gore. Four rounds were conducted as a part of the interesting competition to test the skills of the school children. It was an eye opener to the children as well as their parents to learn the way people with deafness communicate using sign language.

Children’s Day Celebration On 14th of November Children’s day was celebrated with teachers of Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired organising a special programme along with the students from Diploma (Special Education). The programme put together involved an entertaining dance, fashion show and skit. The life of our first Prime minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his diverse qualities were explained to the students by the teachers.

Upcoming Workshops / Seminars & Conferences The Department of Speech Language Studies is conducting a one day National Seminar on Living with Laryngectomy on 19th February, 2016. (Interested individuals can contact the organizing secretary Dr. B.S. Premalatha) Leading Experts in the field Dr. Shenoy, Kidwai and Dr. Rajashekhar, Dean Manipal School of Allied Health Sciences, will share their expertise during the seminar.

The Department of Hearing Studies is proposing a 3 Day National Level Workshop to be held from 10th to 12th March, 2016. This workshop is titled AUDISHCON-2016 “Implantable Hearing Devices: Now and Beyond.” There will be lectures/video presentations as well as hands on practical sessions by eminent personalities such as Dr. Mohan Kameswaran and Dr. Shankar Medikeri from the field of Implantable Devices.

Mobile Bus and Outreach Unit Mobile Speech and Hearing Outreach Bus

With the aim of reaching out to the underprivileged and those who are unaware/unable to reach the facilities of the Institute, the Mobile Speech and Hearing Bus has been launched with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore East.

The mobile outreach bus is offering comprehensive audiological evaluation, treatment and consultation services for people with speech and hearing impairments. The bus comes with many features including a sound treated room, GSI -61 audiometer and middle ear analyser. Of the 1.2 million children born in Karnataka every year, less than 10 percent are born in corporate hospitals with facilities for hearing screening and intervention.

Over 1,200 children are born with significant hearing impairment in the state annually. Therefore this project has been launched with the objective of providing preventive healthcare through hearing screening and early intervention services for the rural and urban children. The services of the mobile speech and hearing clinic can be availed by elders as well. The mobile bus has reached out to senior citizens at many old age homes across Bangalore.

Disability Certification for Persons with Hearing Impairment as under PWD Act 1995: Lessons Learnt & Way Forward

1. Eligibility for Certification:

• Persons with hearing impairment in India are those with a Pure Tone Average Hearing Loss of 60 dB (average of Hearing Loss at 500Hz, 1K, 2K, and 4K) in the better ear in pure tone audiometry and Word Recognition Score (WRS) of 60 percent or less in Speech audiometry.

2. Requirements to Test Hearing:

• Pre requisite for ascertaining the above criteria are as follows:-

i. Calibrated clinical audiometer with facility for speech audiometry and a talk back system.

ii. Sound treated double room as per ANSI S3.1-1991 standard.

iii. A qualified Audiologist as per RCI Act 1992.

iv. Standardised word list, both spondee (Bi Syllabic word) and Phonetically Balanced (PB) word list for assessing the word recognition ability of the client. The PB list in short is prepared in a way that the list represents the frequency of occurrence of phonemes in a given language. The list is language specific.

• Ones the hearing evaluation is done, fulfilling the requisites as above, and if the word recognition score is 60% or less and PTA in better ear is 60dBHL or less, then the percentage of Hearing loss is calculated as given below.

3. Calculating percentage of Hearing loss:

Monaural and Binaural percentage of Hearing Disability is calculated by using following formula:

• STEP 1: Monaural percentage of Hearing Disability = PTA – 25 x 1.5

• STEP 2: Binaural percentage of Hearing Disability = [(Better ear percentage x 5) + poorer ear percentage] / 6

• 25dBHL is considered as lower fence while 95dBHL is considered as higher fence.

Beware of Impersonation

A major came to verify of we can confirm that we had tested a given employee. In reality, that employee had deceived by bringing his hearing impaired brother for testing but gave his own name, age etc while registering the case. Since we are only a testing center and not a certifying center, the report was taken to a certifying center and a disability certificate was taken in the name of the fraudster.

4. Way forward:

In view of sizeable number of malingerers, the certifying agencies are advised to do the following as a matter of precaution

1. Do ABR Test for all clients coming for Certification.

2. Take Left thumb impression of the testee for records.

3. Take Photograph of the testee for records.

While number 1 above identifies malingerers, number 2 and 3 are done to safe guard from attempts of impersonation.

In order to streamline the process, one may consider

i. Surveying the capacity of certifying agencies to begin with and

ii. Nominating competent centers to monitor the requirements of certifying agencies, such as calibration of audiometer, sound treatment level in the test booths etc.

SASH Report (Students Association of Speech & Hearing) DIWALI CELEBRATION: A time for celebration, a time for victory of good over evil, light over darkness, a time when the world sees the example of the power of light. Like every year this year also the festival of lights was celebrated in a very grand way. What would be the best way to celebrate Diwali? Yes its LIGHTS and SWEETS. On November 14th we had the celebrations in our college campus at around 6.30 pm till 8.30pm. The college was fully decorated with “diyas�. All the students were served with hot badam milk and fruit burfi after the celebrations.

We the members of SASH would like to thank the management for providing us with the funds needed and also gave us the time to celebrate.

Play Area in the Campus for the Children The students of the Institute with the guidance of Mrs. Lovely George worked hard at creating a fun and colourful play area in the campus for the children. Our main student artists who created this lovely space with their creative skills were Ms. Tessy, Ms. Bini, Mr. Disan, Ms. Zumongi, Mr. Bibin and Mr. Vinesh along with the support of Ms. Namita, Ms. Sharon John, Mr. Abhay, Mr. Alok Biswas, Mr. Alok Suman, Mr. Abin, Mr. Aravind, Mr. Naveen, Ms. Anmol, Ms. Saloni and Ms. Maria.
