We have completed yet another eventful quarter.

We were proud to co-host the 51st ISHACON that was held at NIMHANS, Bangalore. Our staff was extensively involved in organizing the event that took place from the 7th to 10th of February 2019. This year’s Dr.SRC Travel Fellow, Dr. John Grose, Professor, Dept. of Allied Health Sciences University of North Carolina, visited our institute and shared his expertise.

The Local Inspection Committee, Bangalore North University, conducted its inspection on 2nd March 2019.

We are extremely happy to have conducted many activities for World Hearing Day. The World Health Organization (WHO) funded “Antaraala – Discover the New You” a flash mob that was conducted as an awareness programme at Orion East Mall, Bangalore. The event was enthralling and we hope that awareness of hearing problems was spread to the general public.

The Mothers Training Centre celebrated its 12th Anniversary this year. Congratulations to Mrs. Ratna Shetty and her team!!

Sunaad School for the Hearing Impaired celebrated “Graduation Day” in March 2019. Hearty congratulations to all successful students.

We are also pleased to have initiated the first fellowship program in India on Speech and Swallowing Management in Head and Neck Cancer with Dr. M.N. Nagaraja as Course Director and Dr. B.S. Premalatha as Course Co-ordinator.

We extend a warm welcome to our new Clinical Director, Dr. Shivashankar, retired Associate Dean, NIMHANS, Bangalore.

Under his able guidance we hope that our clinical services will reach greater heights.

Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Travel Fellow Dr. John Grose, Professor, Dept. of Allied Health Sciences University of North Carolina and the SRC fellow for the year 2019-20 was welcomed to the institute on 11th February 2019, by Dr. M.N. Nagarja, CEO, Dr. Madhuri Gore, Professor and Dr. Rashmi J. Bhat, Professor. He was felicitated in the presence of Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Chairman, and CADL Suresh Babu in the auditorium.

He is the 5th recipient of this honour through the Indian Speech and Hearing Association, as instituted by our Trust in the memory of the founder Dr. S.R. Chandrasekhar, an eminent ENT surgeon and visionary.

Prof. John Grose made a presentation on his latest

study conducted using psychophysical and electrophysiological measures to evaluate cochlear synaptopathy, published in Trends of Hearing, and funded by NIH, USA. The department of Hearing Studies along with the staff of B.N. Gupta Research Centre, Dr.SRCISH met Professor Grose on 12th Feb. 2019, at BNGRC department to discuss the collaboration opportunities with him/his University for teaching and research activities. He also provided some research ideas in the field of psychophysics and emphasized on use of MATLAB and other softwares for psychophysical experiments.

Talks held at the Institute

Dr. Ing. Hans Oswald, CEO, Path Medical, Germany, visited the institute on 11th February and addressed the students and staff of the Department of Hearing Studies. His talk was on “Latest developments in objective audiometry”. He focused on the instrumentation and diagnostic importance of some of the latest and important, yet clinically ignored diagnostic tests like, FMOAE and ASSR. Clinical relevance in terms of advantages and disadvantages of these physiological and electrophysiological tests were discussed.His research work and experiences on the afore mentioned topics were shared. It was an interactive session where participants could understand and ask questions about the topic.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to students titled “Pariksha Pe Charcha” was screened on 29th January 2019 at Dr. SRCISH. Bachelors and Masters students of Speech Language Pathology and/or Audiology attended the same.

Dr. Jagadish Swamy, President/Audiologist at Clear Sound Audiology, Gainesville, Florida, visited the institute on 4th February 2019 .His talk focused on “Current Scope of Audiology”. Students from I BASLP and III BASLP, and staff from various departments of the institute attended the session. It was a lively conversational session where the participants were given an opportunity to take part in the discussion.

Ms. Neha Tiwari visited the Institute on 11/02/2019 and addressed 2nd BSLPA students and staff of Department of Speech language studies. Her interaction with students focused on inspiring them to build ‘social connect’ while delivering services as professionals. She also shared her skills on counselling. The students were made to enact as clinician and caregiver and were shown how they could do it better. She shared her views and gave us her “Route Map For School Screening” which included writing letters/e-mails to convince the authorities, orienting teachers, meeting parents of students, using gold standard screening procedures, follow-up, providing home training programs, and counseling those in need.

Professional Development Ms. Jennifer Brown, Market Development manager, Cochlear Global team, United States, visited the institute on 8th and 11th March 2019. All the staff of the Department of Hearing studies participated in the session. She discussed about BAHA (Bone Anchored Hearing Aid), a surgically implanted amplification device. Orientation on Candidacy for BAHA, latest technology in bone conduction hearing, overview of the BAHA System, and candidate evaluation process was discussed. There was a practical demonstration and also hands-on training on the device programing, which gave an opportunity to the staff to experience the practical issues in candidate selection, device usage and programing. With written consent, children evaluated at the Department of Hearing Studies, who were candidates for BAHA were counselled and were provided a trial experience of the device as well.

Ms. Lalitha Nagarajan addressing students Ms. Lalitha Nagarajan, Head of Customer Success and Community Relations for AVAZ, conducted a session on Alternative Augmentative Communication on 2103-2019 for half a day. She guided us with step by step demonstration on the use of “AVAZ”, a high tech AAC application. She explained to us the recent updated features/revision made on patient requests, its use and importance etc. She also shared successful stories of those patients who are using this app effectively to communicate on an everyday basis.

Events and Celebrations World Hearing Day On the occasion of World Hearing Day on 3rd March 2019, Department of Hearing Studies conducted several activities on the theme proposed by World Heath Organization, “Check Your Hearing”. The aims were to “Raise awareness on hearing loss and care” and “Regular hearing check”. This programme was supported by the WHO by awarding a fund of 750 US Dollars under the World Hearing Day, 2019 Small Grants Scheme. The institute was one among the 16 selected applicants from a total of 101 applications across the globe. The activities began with a free hearing screening camp for a week until 8th March 2019 at the institute. In addition, awareness programs in rural and urban areas on the hazardous effects of recreational activities like listening to loud music were carried out. The target audience in the urban area were college students and in the rural area were the people who attended the free hearing screening at Pavagada. Awareness programme to college students titled “Dangerous Decibels” was conducted by Mr. Suman N. (Asst Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies) at St. Anne’s College and Jyothinivas College, Bangalore. Focussing on the hazardous effect of recreational hearing loss, it included the use of a mannequin developed by the institute, called the ‘Karna’, with a microphone in its ear canal (connected to a sound level meter) that measures the output of an earphone plugged to the personal music system. The program was well received by the students with many queries on music induced hearing loss. A questionnaire was also given to raise awareness and to see the effectiveness of the programme conducted.

In addition, Mr. Nitin K. Damam (Clinical Supervisor, Dept. of Hearing Studies) coordinated with a similar activity focussing on the rural population at a hearing screening camp at

Pawagada. Antaraala, Discover the New You, another awareness program was carried out at Orion East shopping mall, Bangalore which was presented as a flash mob that attracted more than 1000 people. At the end of the performance, Ms. Deena Priya (Asst Professor, Dept. of Hearing Studies) addressed the gathering about the signs and symptoms of hearing loss and the importance of a hearing testing. This was well received by the public and the mall authorities requested for a second round of performance.

New Beginnings Dr. SRCISH opens the door into Oncology rehabilitation A pioneer Institute in the field of Speech and Hearing, Dr. S. R. Chandrasekhar Institute of Speech and Hearing (Dr. SRCISH), Bangalore has initiated the first Fellowship program in India on Speech and Swallowing Management in Head and Neck Cancer. The Fellowship program is in collaboration with Kidwai Cancer Institute, Bangalore, one of the best cancer hospitals in India. The programme mainly focuses on refining the knowledge and clinical skills of speech pathologists so that they are well-equipped to improve speech and swallowing function following head and neck cancer treatment. The dearth of experienced SLPs in this field of cancer rehabilitation gave birth to the idea of conducting this fellowship program.

The program duration is of 3 months, which includes theory classes, case demonstrations, discussions, clinical presentations by the fellows, and preparing project reports.

These activities will be monitored by experienced speech and swallowing therapists and head and neck surgeons.

The intake is limited in order to ensure the best possible training experience.

The course director is Dr. M.N. Nagaraja and course coordinator is Dr. B.S. Premalatha. The program started on March 11th 2019 with the 9 fellows who enrolled for the program. Interested candidates may contact college office/Dr. B.S. Premalatha.

This too shall Pass… Glimpses of the Women’s day Programme at Dr. SRCISH

The Women Empowerment Committee was able to successfully conduct an hour long stress-breaking session titled ‘This too shall pass’ for the teaching and clinical faculty which included 30 individuals on March 12th 2019. Mrs. Priya Veeraraghavan conducted this session. This was conducted on account of Women’s Day on March 8th 2019. Her session was initiated with an effort done to help us understand why only humans

experience stress with a beautiful comparison with a zebra and its stress initiating factors. There was also an interactive session which helped listeners identify the type of stress they are going through. The idea of finding the moments of laughter in every stressful situation made everyone feel light. Living in the present and allowing things to happen as they may was highlighted as a key factor in de-stressing.

ISH serves the Community Pulse Polio Campaign

Students of the college participated in the Pulse Polio Camp at New Baglur, PHC from 10th to 13th March, 2019.

We are pleased to report that Mount Carmel College students are using ‘Karna’, a Sound Measuring Instrument (Designed by Dr.SRCISH and Funded by Indian Oil Company) that is displayed on their campus on a regular basis. We hope that this will contribute to the prevention of noise induced hearing loss in the general public.

Updates from B N Gupta Research Centre Updates on Special Clinics:

The Neuro Communication Rehabilitation Clinic (NCRC) is operational with patients availing all the facilities. The team of professionals consists of a Speech Language Pathologist, a Physiotherapist and a Psychologist.

Intern students from Physiotherapy college have also been posted at the Neuro Communication Rehabilitation Clinic. Referral letters have been sent to institutes like NIMHANS, Vani Vilas Hospital and Marthas Hospital.

Ms. Manu, Medico Social Worker has been coordinating the activities of the clinic and giving input to BNGRC department for documentation and research purposes.

The Balance and Vestibular Clinic has a regular inflow of cases. A new dental chair was procured for patient evaluation purposes with the efforts of Dr. Venkatesh, our Chairman and Mr Suresh Babu, which has eased the work of the vertigo clinic. The clinic follows standard protocols of assessment and is gaining recognition from both the inhouse ENT doctor and outside hospitals. The assessment procedure is carried out by a team of professionals from the Department of Hearing Studies, ENT Department, 12

and BNGRC department. BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) and vestibular neuritis are the most frequent vestibular conditions seen at the clinic.

Updates on Research:

A. Intramural: The faculty of Hearing Science Department, Mr. Suman N., Mr. Shobin James have developed a prototype modification for the recording insert phones of OAE . This will help in accurate recording of OAE during infant screening. Projects that can be taken up for intramural research are also being discussed and compiled at the department.

B. Projects: Two projects have been submitted to ICSSR and two others for obtaining CSR funds. Two projects are also being worked upon to be sent to different agencies under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

C. Extramural: Discussions are underway between Institute of Speech and Hearing, MAHE, and Dr.S.R.C.Institute of Speech and Hearing, to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in order to conduct collaborative research.

On 13th March, 2019, Graduation Day function of the class 10 was celebrated. Mrs. Prabha Alexander, BEO, Bangalore-North 3 was the chief guest. Dr. M.S. made ‘Ellu-Bella’ and distributed it to all their teachers and friends. The teachers of Sunaad School explained the significance of the festival and how it is celebrated in various parts of India.

The parents and relatives of the students were invited and they were proud to see their children completing their schooling despite the challenges they face due to their hearing impairment. Updates from Sunaad School Competitions On 4th Jan., 2019, the students of Sunaad School participated in the inter-house “Creative Card Making” competition.

Students from preschool to Std. 10 participated actively.

Students were grouped based on their age, and prizes were distributed.

Mr. Gokul Student from 10th Std. participated in “Classical Dance Competition” organised by Zee Kannada an entertainment channel. His participation was highly appreciated by the audience and organizers.

On 31st Jan., 2019, the students of Sunaad School participated in the inter-house “Sports” competition.

Excursions

On 24th & 25th January 2019, Students from Pre-School to 3rd Std. and 5th to 7th std. from Sunaad school were taken to “Lal-Bhag” for the Flower Show.

On 7th Feb. 2019, High School students from 8th Std. to 10th Std. from Sunaad school were taken to “Wonderla Amusement Park” on 9th Feb. 2019. Pre-School students were taken to Cubbon Park for a picnic. Pre-School teachers accompanied the students.

On 6th March, 2019, an inter-house competition on Vegetable Carving was conducted and prizes were awarded for the best carvings.

On 3rd Jan. and 27th Feb. 2019, students from AWH Speech and Hearing College, Calicut and St. Ann’s Degree College for women, Bangalore visited Sunaad School as part of their orientation program.

Volunteer

A team of volunteers from Cognizant Foundation visited Sunaad School in the month of January-March 2019. They interacted with the school children and trained the school teachers in Basic Computer skills.

Stefan Enrique Joseph Kallikaden completed his II PUC in East Point Group of Institutions, Bangalore, with a first class. He wanted to pursue his undergraduate studies in medicine in Canada.

As the process would take some time, he enrolled himself for ISL Course in Dr.SRCISH. He found himself free after the classes, he wanted to help the special children of Sunaad School. He was given an opportunity to assist Mathematics and Science teachers to teach Std. X students. He accepted the challenge and played a major role in preparing X students to face SSLC Board Examinations.

Exhibition

On 27th Feb. 2019, Sunaad School organized an exhibition, students from Pre-school to 9th Std. participated enthusiastically. This included a skit to exhibit the intonation and voice Modulation in their speech, models

of emotions/adjectives, prepositions, different kinds of houses, metamorphosis of butterfly, time and Money concept, energy, space, and global warming. Management and institute staff expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the students’ efforts.

Examination

In Sunaad School, March is synonymous with examinations. Annual examinations for the academic year 2018-19 commenced from 21.03.19. We wish all students the best of luck!

Updates from Sign Language Unit The department was engaged in different activities during the quarter. 25 B. Ed students from Vivekananda College and Sanjay Gandhi College visited the department as part of their course requirement. A three-hour sensitization program on “Introduction to Inclusive Education for the Deaf and Indian Sign Language Alphabet” was conducted for the same.

A ten-day intensive course on Indian Sign Language (ISL) was conducted by the department for 20 BSc (Rehabilitation Science) students from St. Anne’s College on 7th January.

Staff of Sign Language Unit were invited for a job fair conducted by the NGO “Your Own Voice” at the police grounds Madivala, where more than 5000 specially-abled people including individuals with hearing loss participated from all over the country. It was a great opportunity to interpret the thoughts of eminent people including that of the Minister for Women and Child Development and Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens, Government of Karnataka, Mrs. Jayamala. Sign Language interpretation was done for many candidates in the stalls put by various MNCs. The relief on the faces of the individuals with hearing impairment availing the facilities was rewarding.

Staff from the Unit were invited as Sign Language Interpreter, at a conference on “Inclusion now- Decoding complexities” conducted by ‘Interweave Solutions’.

Staff were invited by Ms. Madhumitha, diversity in-charge, at Coca Cola Company, who is a former student of the department, to serve as Sign Language Interpreters in her company.

On 19th of March, staff were invited by “Trio World International School” to teach class 1 students about signs and symbols. Children were taught Indian Sign Language numbers, the one-hand alphabet and signed songs.

The children participated and enjoyed the program thoroughly. In addition, 2 candidates joined the Grade 1 Sign Language Course and 3 candidates joined the functional sign language courses conducted by the unit.

Mother’s Training Center On March 1st, the Mothers Training Center celebrated their 12th anniversary. The program began with an invocation seeking God’s blessing, Mrs. Mamatha welcomed and introduced the Chief guest Dr. M.N. Nagaraja, C.E.O, DR. SRCISH. Who then addressed the gathering. Mrs. Shobha and Mrs. Mouna, parents of children with hearing impairment attending MTC, spoke about their experiences at MTC and their children’s progress and thanked Dr. SRCISH for providing such a facility at affordable rates.

Celebrations:

On January 1st, the New Year was celebrated by the students and parents of Mothers Training Center. The Center Coordinator and staff were all present encouraging the students on this occasion that was celebrated by cutting a cake amidst lots of cheering.

On January 12th Swami Vivekananda’s Birthday was celebrated, Staff, parents and children of MTC offered floral tributes to Swami Vivekananda.

Students were briefed about the inspiring life of Swami Vivekananda by Mrs. Rathna Shetty.

On January 14th Makara Sankranthi, the harvest festival, was celebrated as token of gratitude to nature, especially for the Sun God and cattle. The MTC children were taken to nearby market to have a live and natural experience of learning things related to the festival. The MTC was decorated with Rangoli, sugarcane stalks, and Pongal pots. With the help of the children, mothers made ‘Ellu-Bella’ and distributed it.

On Janary 23rd , Netaji Subhaschandra Bose’s Birthday was celebrated.

Children and their mothers were briefed about the leaders’ life history and his contribution to our country.

On March 8th, International Women’s Day was celebrated, The program began with an invocation seeking God’s blessing, Mrs. Rathna Shetty welcomed and Introduced the Chief guest Mrs. Megha Sasidharan HOD, Dept. Hearing Studies who then addressed the gathering and spoke on the importance of mothers in their children’s life and that they are no less than any famous eminent personality. Mothers of hearing impaired children participated in sports and winners were given prizes by the chief guest.

On January 30th, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed as ‘Martyrs’ Day’. The Father of the Nation was honored by children with flowers.

Field Trip:

In the month of January 2019, children from MTC were taken to Lalbhag for the flower show.

Talks and Training:

On 12th February, Ms. Anjali and Mrs. Jaspal Chowdhary from Cochlear India delivered a talk on Audio Verbal Therapy and its importance and school readiness in hearing impaired children. All mothers from Mothers Training Center participated.

A week long training programme was organized at MTC on “Training Methods” followed at MTC. Counselors Mrs. Manjula and Mrs. Mamatha demonstrated teaching methods and activities to teach children with hearing loss. On this occasion Mrs. Prajna Kodgi, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Speech Language Studies was invited to talk on language development in typically developing children. This training received positive feedback from mothers.

A camp was organized to conduct assessments for specially-abled children at on 22 Jan 2019 at GRT Special School, Kacharakanahalli, Hennur main road.

Sash Corner The Students Association of Speech and Hearing (SASH) conducted a number of fun-filled events to kick start the beginning of the year. Beginning with Ethnic day and ending with Sports day, students have had an actionpacked quarter.

On the 18th of February, 2019 we all gathered to pay tribute to the dear soldiers who were brutally killed in the Pulwama attack by taking a few minutes to pray for them and their families who will have to live with the loss.

We took this moment, not only to thank the martyred souls but also to give our solemn gratitude to all the brave soldiers who work day and night to keep us and our fellow Indian citizens safe.

Ethnic day was conducted on the 7th of March, 2019 and it definitely added the pop of colour that was needed in everybody’s day to day lives. All the students and staff rocked their ethnicity in bright and beautiful attire, taking pictures of every moment to remember the day. Different fun filled events were conducted by the students which included dance performances and a fashion Show Mr. Pavan Kumar from I MASLP and Ms. Mary Chhakchhuak from I BASLP were crowned Mr. Ethnic and Ms. Ethnic

respectively. The program ended with a stunning ramp walk by the teachers.

An Intra-college football tournament was conducted on the 9th of March, 2019 at the Bangalore Football Turf.

Excitement, great cheering and a perfectly manicured turf are the things that come to mind when we think of the tournament. The Invictums (3rd BASLP) bagged the 1st prize, Xanthrones (1st BASLP) won 2nd place and Direwolves (2nd BASLP) won 3rd place in the football competition.

Sports day was held on15th March, 2019. Despite the scorching heat and the dusty winds, students of the institute gave their best for all the competitions that took place that day. The Best Sportsman Award was given to Ishak and Raees of 2ndBASLP, Best Sportswoman award was given to Jemi of 2nd M.SLP, and the Best Sportsmanship Award was given to Bibin George of 2nd BASLP. The overall Sports trophy was bagged by 3rd BASLP and 1st MScs, with the 2nd BASLPs in the 2nd position and 2nd MScs in the 3rd position.

These last few months have been great and students are eagerly looking forward to one of the main events of the academic year, Talents Day!
