Dear Friends, I am pleased to say that the Institute is constantly engaging itself towards academic and professional development.

This trend has continued in the first quarter of 2016 with the Institute conducting a National level seminar and a workshop, both of which received RCI-CRE certification status. Both the events had stalwarts in the field of implantable hearing devices and laryngectomy share their knowledge and experience with students as well as working professionals. I congratulate the organising secretaries of both events on conducting programmes that were aimed at achieving professional growth and development. Parents and teachers of our 10th standard students from Sunaad school for hearing impaired shared their pride in seeing their wards, despite all the odds, graduating and moving forward in their lives. The Institute also had the opportunity to host the visit of the RCI inspection committee and Vice-President, Lions Club International Foundation, Robert E. Corlew and Lion Joe Preston (Intl. Past President & Chairman, LCIF). We look forward to further the development and growth of the Institute with your patronage, guidance and good wishes.

ISHACON 2016 held at Mumbai

Professional Development On 27th and 28th of January, 2016, as part of the 2nd Dr. S R Chandrasekhar Travel fellowship instituted by ISHA along with Dr. S R C I S H, Professor Vishaka Rawool spoke about “Industrial Toxins and Deafness” and “Auditory Processing Disorders”. Professor Vishaka Rawool holds the position of Director of the Audiology Research Laboratory and Director of Graduate Study in Audiology, Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, at West Virginia University, USA. Her sessions were chaired by Dr. Sridevi (Director, ESI Hospital) and Dr. M. Jayaram (Dean, NIMHANS).

RCI Recognized CRE (Continued Rehabilitation Education) A National Seminar & A Workshop were Conducted at the Institute An RCI recognized CRE-National Seminar on “Living with Laryngectomy” was organized by the Department of Speech and Language Studies on the 19th of February, 2016. Prof. Dr. Ashok Mohan Shenoy, Professor and Head of Head and Neck Surgery, KIDWAI Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore was the chief guest for the day.

AUDISHCON 2016

From 10th to 12th of March, 2016, the Department of Hearing Studies organized an RCI recognized CRE National workshop, nicknamed AUDISHCON 2016 entitled “Implantable Hearing Devices: Now and Beyond”. Padmasri Prof. Mohan Kameswaran (MD of MERF, Chennai) was the Chief Guest and also the keynote Speaker. Renowned speakers from the field such as Dr. Sunil Narayan Dutt (Apollo hospital), Dr. Shankar B. Medikeri and Dr. Gaurav Medikeri (Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre), Mr. Apurva Kumar (Bangalore Ear Hearing and Speech Therapy Foundation), Prof. R Rangasayee and Dr. Madhuri Gore (Dr. SRCISH), Dr. Asha Yathiraj (AIISH), Mr. R. Ranjith (MERF, Chennai), Dr. Krishna Y. (Manipal College of Allied Health Sciences) contributed to the learning process. Two panel discussions – one led by Mrs. Rashmi Deshpande (Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre) and Dr. Sheelu Srinivas (Dr. Sheelu’s ENT centre) on Intraoperative Monitoring and the other led by Dr. VasanthiAnand (Manasa Hospital) and Mr. Suresh T. (Samvaad Institute of Speech and Hearing) on Government schemes were well received by the delegates. The 2nd panel discussion included the perspectives of four cochlear implant recipients and parents who were beneficiaries of the schemes sponsoring their implantation.

Mobile Bus and Outreach Unit With the aim of reaching out to the underprivileged and those who are unaware/unable to reach the facilities of the Institute, the Mobile Speech and Hearing Bus has been launched with the support of Lions Club of Bangalore East.

The mobile outreach bus is offering comprehensive audiological evaluation, treatment and consultation services for people with speech and hearing impairments. The bus comes with many features including a sound treated room, GSI -61 audiometer and middle ear analyser. Of the 1.2 million children born in Karnataka every year, less than 10 percent are born in corporate hospitals with facilities for hearing screening and intervention.

We have conducted 5 Mobile Camps at various places of Bengaluru organised by various clubs, schools viz Rotary Club, Divya Shanthi School, SVES English School and Jal Vayu Vihar tested about 265 persons.

To spread the reach of our therapy services, the interns of the institute give speech therapy at the outreach centre, located at Seshadripuram. Clients are consistently availing the benefits of this service.

Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired An orientation programme was conducted for teachers of Government schools from the 6th to 11th January, 2016 at Gurubhavana building, Devanahalli regarding education and teaching strategies for children with hearing impairment. Mrs. Mahalakshmi and Mr. Shivaraj Kumar spoke and shared their experience and knowledge during the occasion. The topics covered Physical Education and Craft as well.

Ellu Bella distributed among students and teachers

Makar Sankranthi, the festival of Spring was celebrated by the children of the Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired. As an Institution which always encourages good values of gratitude, the children prepared and distributed Ellu Bella, and they were explained the significance of the festival. Makar Sankranthi marks the shift of the Sun from southern hemisphere to the northern hemisphere (towards the tropic of Cancer) – period of Uttarayana. It signifies that we should turn away from the darkness of delusion, and begin to enjoy a new life with bright light within us to shine brighter and brighter.

The pre-school children and students of standard I to VI were taken on an educational trip to Bannerghatta National Park on 23rd January, 2016 and 30th January, 2016.

A quiz competition was conducted by Seva-in-action, which was sponsored by L & T Infotech at Sneha Reddy College auditorium, Koramangala. Students from standards VII to IX participated in the competition.

In addition to academics

and various sports and games there were many co-curricular activities conducted for students from the pre-primary section to X standard. Various competitions were conducted where students got an opportunity to show their talent and bag prizes.

Rangoli competition was conducted on 27th January 2016. Mrs. Rathna Shetty and Mrs. Prema Kumari were the judges at the competition.

Graduation Ceremony Graduation ceremony for the outgoing students of class 10 was held on the 23rd of March, 2016. The Chief Guest, Mr. G. Mohan, District Disabled Welfare Officer, Bangalore (urban) presided over the ceremony, along with the Chairman, Dr. M.S. Venkatesh, Prof. R. Rangasayee, Mr. (Lion) Shanthavadhan (Treasurer) and the Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Padma Prabha. The parents were proud to see their children achieve this

milestone. The students of classes VIII and IX entertained their seniors, parents and teachers with a cultural programme. The graduating students, teachers and parents shared their experiences and fond memories. The Chief Guest, Mr. G. Mohan, presented the graduating students with mementoes, certificates and scrolls. The vote of thanks was followed by refreshments for the parents and students.

Talents Day

The talents day “SRISHTI 2K16”, held on 18th of March, 2016 was one of the most awaited events of the year. It is a day to exhibit the talents of the students. The talents day was marked as one of the extraordinary events of the year.

There were inter class events competitions held and it was conducted by the SASH. Each team was represented by a unique motto and a theme that symbolized their spirit.

The events that were part of the talents day were theme dance, comedy acts, fashion show, group dance, group

song, movie making, pencil sketching, face painting, junk art, hair styling, dubsmash, music without instruments and fireless cooking. The theme given for photography was “Namma ooru Bengaluru”. The photograph that won was taken by 2nd year student Alex Mathew. The winners of SRISHTI 2K16 were WARRIORS (final year masters students), followed by the first runners up THE NIGHT HAWKS (2nd year bachelors students) and the second runners up were the FIRECE IMMORTALS (1st year bachelors students). It was indeed a day to cherish.

Sports Day

The sports day was conducted at Kacharakanahalli ground on the 27th of February, 2016. The effort and energy put in by each class to win the champion trophy was amazing and laudable. The games held were cricket for both girls and boys, shot-put, athletics and tug of war. After a whole month’s hard work and preparation, the youngest batch of the institute, 1st year bachelors’ students won the overall sports day trophy. The day was fun filled and ended with dusty shoes.

Screen Time & Language Development

In the past few years there has been a dramatic increase in the time children spend on use of mobile phones, tablet devices and television watching. Does this trend in increased screen time have an effect on the development of language in our children?

What is Screen Time?

First let us define the term ‘screen time’. Screen time includes any time that is spent in front of a device such as smartphone, tablet devices like the iPad, television, gaming consoles, movie theatre screen and computers.

What about educational apps and videos of rhymes?

Ensure these videos and educational apps do not replace person-to-person interactions for teaching language.

They are important but play a much smaller role than the role you have in teaching language to your child.

How much screen time is ‘OK’ for a normally developing child?

What if the child already has a language The American Academy of Paediatrics recommends NO delay? screen time for children below the age of two years and a maximum of two hours for children above the age of two years.

Why the recommendation of a limit on screen time?

Children learn to talk and communicate by observing their parents, siblings and other family members. When a child engages in people-to-people communication there is a high level of two way interaction. The child learns to listen as well as talk in turns with people. In contrast, when playing a game on the mobile phone or watching TV this interaction is mainly one way. This means that the child is not required to talk to the mobile phone or television!

Think about a car ride, if your child has a device with her she is more likely to quietly sit and watch her favourite show or play a game than talk to you. On the other hand without a device you are more likely to start a conversation or the child gets bored and starts a conversation with you.

There is no way to tell if too much screen time caused the child’s delay in language development. Most likely the delay is caused by a combination of factors, so it is better to not feel guilty or blame oneself. However, continued overuse of screen time could be making your child’s language delay worse or at least reducing chances of getting better.

Some children do completely fine with lots of screen time. Some children learn to count, name things, or even read from screens! However, a child having trouble with communication needs every opportunity possible to hear words spoken to him (by a real person, not a screen) and to practice using sounds and words himself. It is not to say that screen time caused your child’s language delay.

But it could certainly be making it worse. Is it really worth risking it?

If the child is ‘addicted’ to screens.. How to • Sing songs/rhymes • Read a book remove them?

If your child is addicted to screen time, then it is unreasonable for us to expect that a sudden reduction in screen time will be accepted by the child. We have to start by setting rules about screen time. With an older child, the negative effects of screen time can be explained and a reasonable limit can be reached. Try limiting the maximum number of minutes that the child has access to screens. For example you can try setting screen time limits such as from 4pm to 6 pm. Additionally set parameters on what types of screens the child is allowed to watch or use during this time period. Start off by limiting the child’s screen time slightly. Then, gradually increase the limits until you have reached the desired amount of screen time.

It is very important to make sure that the child’s previous screen time is now replaced by other engaging activities.

What activities can be done with the child instead of screen time?

Try some of these alternatives to screen time that are better for the child’s development and will help build a better relationship with the child as well. Keep in mind it’s important for to put away your screens as well when interacting with the child as well. Put away your smart phone! Work or Candy Crush can wait.

• Talk with the child. If your child is only giving you oneword responses, try asking more specific questions (like “who did you eat lunch with”) instead of open-ended questions (like “how was your day?”). Encourage the child to talk.

• Play with your child’s favourite toy • Colour a picture • Make a craft project • Try an origami project • Play in the garden • Go for a walk • Take your child to a park • Go for a car ride and talk about what you see • Go to the library and look for books on a topic that interests your child • Play a board game such as scrabble or more simple games such as snakes-n-ladders • Teach your child a new skill • Teach or practice a sport • Go somewhere with an indoor play-place • Call up some friends and have a play session • Cook something in the kitchen together • Plant seeds or plants in a garden • Do a family service project together, like helping an elderly neighbour with house work Keep in mind, the key here is that you are replacing the screen time with quality time with you or another caring adult. That will help ease the transition to reduce screen time. Initially children are most likely to resist the change and insist and even have tantrums for more screen time.

Hence it is important to make the transition slowly but surely.

“All the workshops that we attend provide us with a lot of information in a short span of time and we end up thinking of only a part of it, as human tendency goes, we tend to ignore most of the information and concentrate only on a bit that got our attention. But the visit we did today to this institute was more than worthwhile, as it threw light on sensitive issues, and how an institute as theirs, plan and carry out various methodologies to diagnose and treat subjects who come to them with impairment in either speech or hearing.

Short-coming in abilities of any form, it may be in vision, speech or hearing can be due to a multitude of reasons.

But much of the pain and anguish that the subject is going through will subside if he/she is being received in by a doctor who has a smile on his/her face. We entered the auditorium in the first floor and were welcomed by a barely audible, soft spoken Dr. Tulasi, the smile on doctors face throughout the introductory talk, held a mirror on a deeper sense of satisfaction that the doctor had in presenting with pride in her eyes, a video that contained the growth of this institute from its earlier days till today. This sense of pride and satisfaction was probably justified when we got to look around the facilities they had, the place was full of small children, happiness and warmth emanated from them. The strain that goes in to handling such a diverse age group of subjects has a toll on the doctors, their only fallback means are the smiles on subject’s relatives when cure is taking effect.

Students pursuing their Master’s degree in the institute facilitated our visit to the different departments, all working with a unified goal of helping out affected individuals reach the

normalcy levels as far as possible, in terms of their abilities, trying their best to bridge the gap between the slower grasping power in impaired children, and their counter parts who have no idea on how difficult it is to push oneself on towards a better prospectus and thereby giving each of them a positive outlook towards life.

As doctors they abide by an oath that binds them within certain confines of societal responsibilities but at the same time, they are not to be too emotionally attached to their subjects during any stage of the treatment. This is the only way to let the nature take its own course in curing the mental scars of the subject. As rightly said by an elder “Time has a cure for everything”. When we clear out the stage for nature to take over, we as mere beings should take a step back and admire in amazement as miracles! Happen to those who believe in them and are eagerly waiting for it to take them into its embrace and guide them forward towards joy. It is important they (subjects) acknowledge their limitations and yet try their best to be as normal as they possibly could and lead a life with no frustrations.

There were many technical aspects taught as well, but this system they had got my attention. The holistic approach to cover the basis of treatment with help of multiple departments like psychology, speech diagnosis, speech lab, speech therapy, school for impaired kids in the same campus told us to clearly note that the “whole is at all times greater than the sum of the parts”.

They said that much of the recovery happens when the child spends time with its family; it then becomes a game of who reaches the finish line first. Whether it is the theoretical procedures, protocols followed, medication methods used or love, which ultimately cures the child to reach its optimal functioning, with the hindrance as no longer a factor affecting its growth but instead aiding it to grow more towards a stronger position in the society.”

Clinical Facilities

Audiometry: Institute’s Audiometry facility is adequately equipped to measure hearing acuity of patients for variations in sound intensity and pitch, tonal purity, thresholds and frequencies.

Hearing Aid (HA) Prescription and Fitting: Our team of experienced Audiologists and Technicians select the right hearing aid based on individual’s need, degree of hearing loss and comfort level.

Custom Ear Mould Making: Hearing Aids are ideally fitted to a patient’s ear through a carefully custom-crafted Silicone ear mould. Our in house facility meets this requirement effectively.

Hearing Aid Repair and Service: Hearing Aids are a miniature marvel of modern technology and require regular servicing, maintenance and expert repairs. The team at the Institute has all the expertise for this service.

Auditory Verbal Therapy & Post Cochlear Implant rehabilitation: Children with speech disabilities are trained by our expert therapists to understand speech and learn to talk after they have been fitted with a hearing aid or treated with a cochlear implant. For those children who have undergone cochlear implant, a thorough rehabilitation process is undertaken that helps the child utilize the auditory signals and to naturally integrate the various components of communication such as listening, speech, language, reading and thinking.

Mapping for Cochlear Implant: A Cochlear implant is a small, complex electronic device that helps provide a sense of sound to a child who is profoundly deaf or severely hard-of-hearing. It consists of an external part that sits behind the ear and an internal part that is surgically placed under the skin. Together they are a combine of a tiny microphone, speech processor, transmitter and receiver, an electrode array that collects the impulses from receiver and sends them to different regions of the auditory nerve. Complex as they are, they need regular ‘mapping’ using advanced computer technology, to meet the response of the child and gradual tuning to meet the child’s comfort needs.

Our experts with appropriate noise measuring equipment do extensive stury and report on the permissible or hazardous limits, by which measures can be taken to prevent hearing damages of the people in those environments.

Department of Speech Language Sciences Voice Clinic: Our Institute is adequately equipped with talent and technology to diagnose and treat voice disorders such as hoarseness, scratchy voice, breathy voice, difficulty with loudness, pain or discomfort while speaking or singing, etc.

Misarticulation - a speech defect in which an individual substitutes, omits, adds or distorts the speech sounds which results in the speech being unintelligible.

Aphasia - the impairment of language function which results from strokes and other injuries to the language areas of the brain.

Dysarthria - an acquired speech problem caused by paralysis, weakness, or inability to coordinate the muscles of the mouth.

Learning Disability - a neurological condition that prevents a person from learning or severely impairs the learning process in one or more academic areas, despite being intelligent.

Dysphagia - is a condition that causes difficulties in swallowing.

Laryngectomy - is a procedure that involves removing part or all of the voice box usually as a result of a cancerous tumour in the larynx resulting in loss of voice and requiring to learn new methods of speaking.

Psychology Unit The Institute has eminent expertise to conduct developmental assessments on children to identify developmental delays (DQ/SQ).

IQ Assessment: Intelligent quotient (IQ) or IQ tests are conducted to measure aptitude and intellectual capacities and provide an estimate of an individual’s mental abilities.

Intelligence Tests: Studies the general intellectual abilities of an individual to measure not only a single trait but also a range of abilities including memory, verbal ability, reasoning skills and numerical ability.

Personality test: Aims to describe aspects of a person’s character that remain stable throughout that person’s lifetime, the individual’s character pattern of behavior, thoughts, and feelings.

Behavior modification: Is a treatment approach, based on the principles of operant conditioning, that replaces undesirable behaviors with more desirable ones through positive or negative reinforcement.

Psycho-educational Assessment or Learning Disibility Assessment: Evaluates an individuals psychological and academic issues and spells out the needs for special education placement and services required for effective remediation of the child.

Sunaad School for Hearing Impaired that provides primary and middle school main-stream education in Kannada and English medium for hearing impaired children.

Sign Language Training trains individuals with basic sign language skills necessary to communicate with individuals with hearing impairment and become professional interpreters for them through short term and diploma level courses in Indian Sign language.

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) through which the institute provides coaching and training for individuals appearing for examinations conducted by NIOS, for out-of-school children with special needs.

Mothers’ Training Centre that provides early and intensive intervention for young children with hearing impairment by providing adequate training for their mother.

The services offered by the Institute are expanding meeting every emerging need in the society.

Placement Cell - A separate cell that is well connected with the corporate world has been set up for finding rewarding and suitable jobs / careers for speech and hearing impaired adults.

Mobile Camps and Outreach Screening Services are regularly conducted at neonatal wards of hospitals and nursing homes, schools, villages, community health centres, institutions and organisations which identify speech, hearing and learning problems.
