PERSONAL STATEMENT I believe that every place has a past. As a landscape architect, it is integral to respect and understand the existing conditions of a site; and propose interventions that are minimally invasive yet render maximum impact.

My approach is to always look at how people engage with a place and how can that experience be enhanced through sensitive design. My particular interest lies in creating socially restorative environments. With a background in architecture, I have a strong inclination towards designing built edges and stimulating life between buildings.

Developing spaces which retain their natural and cultural value, while integrating social and ecologically relevant strategies; to create diverse experiences and habitats is my focus.

Llanberis is a tiny village in North West Wales.

It is known as the gateway to Mount Snowdon due to its easy access to the peak via the Llanberis Path and the Snowdon Mountain Rail.

The high-impact seasonal tourism does not benefit the local economy. The village acts as a service settlement to Snowdonia National Park.

The aim is to reimagine the image of Llanberis as a landmark destination.

The visualizations depict the planning strategies being applied to individual areas within the site. Providing interventions which enhance the existing features of the site, while also encouraging social interaction, habitat creation and economic regeneration of the landscape is key.

The visualizations offer an insight into the detailed design of the living terraces of Dinorwig. The quarry landscape is inherently unique because of the incredible views looking out and the character of the oakland and ruins. The proposed trees, weathered steel elements and new slate walls act as accents, framing the existing site features.

The visualization has been superimposed over an actual model made by the group. The aim is to regenerate the crossroads so that the characters experience a strong sense of belonging, safety and community. Each building edge serves different functions and offers opportunities of interaction, refuge and repose.

The arched corridor provides a porous relationship between the community centre and the street. It creates a middle ground for shelter that can be territorialized by each character. It can provide a wide programme of events for the community as a whole.

Used for the fuelling of mills and industry, the Sheaf river has been the guide tool to lay key road and rail networks of Sheffield. Today, these historic mills have been replaced by big box retailers and the corridor itself is a barrier separating the affluent West from the deprived East.

The aim is to reinvigorate the Sheaf corridor and treat it as a mitigating element. Change in land use, introduction of green spaces, establishment of linkages will activate the central spine. The revitalization of the railway stations only strengthens this vision. The well-being of the river and its surroundings is crucial, in order for the spine to function as a vibrant, principle axis.

The area is relatively flat, allows for views of the river and is easily accessible. It lacks any cultural or landscape character due to the many big box retailers that constitute this area. The aim of creating this model is to develop new land use and character so that people can reassociate with the area. The woodland edge will be retained, but extended into the residential spaces.

Crookes Valley Park connects the north and south parts of the Green Corridor. The entry to the Park is a junction which is common for the two parks in the vicinity i.e Ponderosa & Weston Park. The Park is also in close proximity to the University and Sport fields, thus increasing the potential of student utilization.

It is open to the public, free, popular with all age groups and active throughout the year.

The Park has potential to host festivals, exhibitions and food markets. There is high interest from the local body & University.

DESIGN

Immersive Reservoir

The Entrance to the Park is defined by a large plaza, which leads to the reservoir through the central ramp.

Tranquil zone

Cool, reflective, fresh, blue

Shaded, Quiet, contemplative, dense, wild

Creating hard surface areas which can deal with frequent wear & tear by different equipment and large gatherings

The shape of the reservoir has been modified to soften the sharp edges. Bridges and decks are proposed to enjoy the views and vistas.

The walkway along the reservoir weaves in and out so that one has different experiences while jogging, swimming or simply walking.

The Clay Model was used a guiding tool to sculpt the landform of the park. The proposed grading creates enclosures and spaces of play and rest close to the reservoir edge. It also creates vantage points along the higher edge of the park.

These photos were taken during the construction phase of the Project during my time at the firm. The issues faced during grading and laying of services were dealt with extreme sensitivity; to retain existing trees and soil levels.

The aerial roots were protected by creating individual mounds around them as they provide stabilility to the Banyan Tree (Ficus benghalensis).

PALAVA CITY

DESIGN OF PHASE II

Palava is a 4,500 acre new city in North Bombay. The various parks of Palava not only providing spaces for recreation, but also spaces that have begun to lend a sense of identity to the city. They have been a response to the existent plant material, and to the relationship with the water bodies that surround it.”

The entrance of the second phase has been envisioned with a cafe that looks out to the Lake. Overflow from the lake gets culverted into the park. An aquatic garden has been proposed at the Entrance to the Park.

The lake overflows into the area through a culvert during the monsoons. It is a relatively flat site with a gradual gradient moving upwards, away from the lae. There are over 50 native trees on this 3.5 acre plot of land. Most of these trees are deciduous and drought resilient. All the trees are to be retained on site.

THE AQUATIC RAMP

DETAIL DESIGN

During the monsoons, the overflow of the lake enters into the site which has caused a depression in the land. The design intent for this area is to preserve this temporary natural water body and have the key elements like the cafe and deck in its close proximity so that one can enjoy the views and vistas provided by the lake as well as this aquatic garden.

The design of the ramp is one of the only formal elements in the otherwise naturalistic park.

The model shows the grading of the site and its response to the proposed elements on the site. The linear cafe is suspended over the existing culvert which connects to Khoni Lake. The elevated tree walk provides users with views and vistas of the lake through the trees. The grading and profile of the lawns are derived from the presence of the existing trees and tree walk alignment.
